DOG FRIENDLY GREENSBORO… Let’s not ruin it
By Brad Howell, Red Beard Dog Training
W
e love our dogs and want to spend time with them. After a long day at work, the last thing you want to do is come home and then walk right back out the door without them. Fortunately, Greensboro has become a shining example for dog friendly venues. We’ve never had so many places to take our dogs to. Not only are there countless restaurant patios and breweries, but several retail stores allow dogs as well. Dog friendly public areas can be a blessing and a curse. The most important thing to remember is none of these places have to let us bring our dogs. The privilege can be removed at any time, so it’s on us to be responsible and respectful with our dogs. Here are a few simple tips to make sure you have enjoyable public outings. Use the right tools Keeping your dog close to you in public is the first step to maintaining some semblance of control. Retractable leashes are fine if they are in a locked position, but if they aren’t, a dog can potentially get 20 feet away from you in the blink of an eye. In tight spaces, this is a recipe for disaster. Make sure flat collars and even harnesses are fitted properly to keep dogs from slipping out of them. No matter what type of leash/collar you use, keeping it to a reasonable length is imperative, especially in tight areas.
There should be a completely different set of rules for when they are off-leash. While on-leash, the best-case scenario is the dogs really like each other and get in a tangled mess. Worst-case scenario, dogs bite each other when their personal space is violated and triggers some fear aggression.
Not everyone loves dogs I don’t trust these people and I definitely feel sorry for them, but there is actually a percentage of the population that does not care for dogs! Despite our differences, I respect this lifestyle choice and they should not have to deal with dogs invading their space when they go into public places. If you sit in the middle of a busy brewery, your dog can get into people’s personal space if you’re not paying close attention.
Leave if you have to Maybe your dog isn’t ready for the big stage. Maybe he is simply having an off night and won’t settle down. No matter how your dog “usually” behaves, if it’s behaving poorly enough that it’s affecting everyone else’s time out, be respectful and head outside for a few minutes. If that doesn’t work, please leave and give it a shot another day. I hope this column encourages people to explore the city with their dogs. As long as we hold up our end of the bargain, we can hopefully keep Greensboro dog friendly for years to come.
Stay mobile If your dog is new to going out, it’s best not to go to a patio for brunch on Sunday and sit in what is guaranteed to be a completely full section. You will be stuck in a stationary space for at least half an hour, probably longer. Maybe your dog is doing well enough at first, but if a dog shows up at the table beside you, will your pup be content sitting and watching or will they make a scene? Start with a beer at one of our breweries and give yourself the option to move around.
This isn’t the dog park Just because dogs are friendly doesn’t mean they should be allowed to interact like they are at the dog park. First of all, they are on leash.

ON THE COVER: Bella Bella has just come into our program. She was passed around a few homes over the past year. One person took her in after hearing of a man that wanted to get rid of his horses by whatever means necessary and feared for her safety. This person was unable to feed her properly so another neighbor stepped in. This person got better weight on her, her feet trimmed and some basic vet care, then realized she was not capable of taking care of Bella properly. She’s a petite mare around 5 yrs. old that loves treats and only knows how to lead. She is not fearful of humans at all and would make a great project for the right person. Bella’s adoption fee will be $200. Contact Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network at www.reddogfarm.com for more information about Bella and any of our other great animals.

There are several different professional associations that Dr. Oliver is a member of, including AAHA, AVMA, AAFP, NCVMA, AAVN, AAHA, and IVAPM. She also supports two local charities, Break the Chain Kennel Kru and Bingo Pet Hospice. Benessere Animal Hospital is a “Pets for Patriots” veterinary service provider.
INTEGRATIVE patient focused, VETERINARY MEDICINE- results based, fear free
I
ntegrative Veterinary Medicine (IVM) is a comprehensive approach to healing patients through a blend of the latest evidenced based Western medicine and less conventional treatment modalities like acupuncture, herbs and homeopathy. IVM is commonly mistaken for Alternative or Holistic practice. The terms are used interchangeably and it becomes confusing. The practice of IVM will utilize alternative and/or holistic approaches, but it is first rooted in evidenced based medicine and adapts and utilizes all available therapies to develop a safe, effective, results based outcome for the whole health of the patient. Using synthetic drugs and surgery to treat pet health conditions is commonly known as, simply, “veterinary medicine.” Today, this system is increasingly being termed “conventional veterinary medicine.” This is the kind of medicine most pet owners still encounter in veterinary hospitals and clinics. Often both expensive and invasive, it is also very good at some things; for example, handling emergency conditions such as imminently life threatening injury or advanced stages of illness that have been left too long to be able to treat less invasively. Some conventional veterinary medicine is scientifically validated, some is not. Any therapy that is typically excluded by conventional medicine, is known as “alternative medicine.” It’s a catch-all term that includes hundreds of old and new practices ranging from acupuncture and Chinese herbs to homeopathy. Generally alternative therapies are closer to nature, cheaper and less invasive than conventional therapies, although there are exceptions. Some alternative therapies are scientifically validated, some are not. An alternative medicine practice that is used in conjunction with a conventional one is known as a “complementary” medicine. Example: using fish oil and turmeric to help fight inflammation along with a prescription analgesic to result in maximum comfort for the patient. Integrative medicine in general, as defined by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, “combines mainstream medical therapies and complementary alternative therapies for which there is some high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness.” In other words, integrative medicine selects the very best, scientifically validated therapies from both conventional and complementary/alternative systems. The emphasis is on getting the patient better. So this is a basic definition of integrative medicine. IVM is healing-oriented veterinary medicine that takes account of the whole pet (body, mind, and spirit), including all aspects of lifestyle.
The principles of integrative veterinary medicine: partnership between the pet patient, their guardian and the veterinar•A ian in the healing process.

including mind, spirit and community as well as body. Nutrition, air and water quality, emotional environment/stress management and mitigating fear/anxiety, appropriate mental stimulation, exercise, thoughtful risk based vaccination protocols and parasite prevention are factors. • A philosophy that neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative therapies uncritically. • Recognition that good medicine should be based in good science, be inquiry driven, and be open to new paradigms. • Use of natural, effective, less-invasive interventions whenever possible. • Use of the broader concepts of promotion of health and the prevention of illness as well as the treatment of disease. • Training of veterinary practitioners to be models of health and healing, committed to the process of self-exploration and self-development. In our hospital, IVM starts when you walk in the door. We have selected paint colors for the hospital that have been proven to help calm animals and their human guardians. We use a combination of aromas, fear free approaches to pet handling and emphasis on creating a kind, calm and welcoming atmosphere. We listen to our clients. We pay close attention to our patients. We use the information we gather to help develop a comprehensive preventative medicine and treatment plan for each individual pet. We have also taken the extra step to insure quality care by becoming AAHA accredited. Only about 15% of veterinary hospitals nationwide are AAHA accredited. AAHA accreditation means we have passed an over 900 point inspection process that holds us to the highest standards of veterinary medicine and we continue to be held accountable by getting re-inspected on a regular basis. We are committed to promoting the best possible health and welfare for our patients and their guardians. We strongly believe that prevention of disease through careful selective vaccination protocols, parasite prevention, good nutrition, good hygiene, emotional health through training and environmental enrichment and communication with pet parents is the best approach to helping our patients stay well. Dr. Oliver and her associate Dr. Cobb, along with their fantastic veterinary health care team, look forward to meeting and working with anyone who wants to collaborate with us to formulate the best veterinary health care plan for their pet family members. 1052 Grecade St., Greensboro 336.897.1505 • Dr.O@dro.vet See ad for Benessere on page 11

The Real Cost of
RESCUE
H
ow much do you spend on your pet per month? Take a minute to add up the numbers or to take a wild guess. Now multiple that number by 75 and you have a rough idea how much money I spend on the animals in our organization every month. You see I am the Executive Director of Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network and we foster out and are financially responsible for somewhere between 50 and 100 animals at any given time. It is also worth mentioning that the animals in our program range in size and need from horses to hamsters and at any given time, any combination of animals will be in our care. So what does that matter to you or why should you care? Well, you know that adoption fee that you chose to pay rather than buy from a breeder (Thank you by the way!) only partially covers the cost of the care of that animal in our program. The average dog costs us $300 to feed, vet, spay/ neuter, and provide monthly heartworm preventative while a horse costs $500 for those same services and a rabbit costs $60 for the equivalent supplies. Horses we bring into our program are considerably more. That’s quite a bit, even with the generous discounts we get from our service providers. What you don’t see reflected in the numbers above is the real cost of rescue. How much a single vaccine costs or a bag of shavings for a horse. Let alone if the animal suffers from an alignment issue or an illness or disease outside the normal range of services we have accounted for. Quite frankly, I would estimate that 90% of the animals we see come through our program require special care beyond what we think of. It may be a special collar or food for the dogs and in the case of many cats, only one brand of litter will do!

By Lauren Riehle, Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network
We often get in a number of “extra special” cases, an animal whose needs go above and beyond even our margin of increased care. These animals often need emergency medical work, orthopedic surgery, or another type of advanced procedure to save their life. One such dog was just recently adopted from our program. Aspen came to us just as many of them do, a stray found by a Good Samaritan needing help to find her owners and a warm place to stay in the meantime. She was very thin with eyes that had been saddened over time, but she had a heart of gold and quickly brightened up with her foster mom. No one came for Aspen. However, this may just have been the luckiest day of her life. Her initial veterinary exam showed that she was heartworm positive, needed a major dental and more than likely a few teeth removed, and hip surgery (often called an FHO). It’s not uncommon for a rescue to take in a stray and find out they need one advanced procedure but three is a lot for one program and for the animal too. We took her case one step at a time and let her (in her own way) determine her case. Aspen’s medical work was covered by a special grant called the maC.A.R.E.S. Fund that helps rescued animals with the emergency medical services or special care that they need and deserve. We are thrilled to report that Aspen has made a full recovery from her dental surgery, is almost done with the rehabilitation of her hip, and is currently handling her heartworm treatment with flying colors. She adores the children, dogs, goats, and the humans in her new home and couldn’t be happier. So when we adopt out a dog for $200 and they cost us on average $300, how do we make up the difference and stay afloat? Well, we have a fabulous group of foster homes who may donate food for their foster, supporters that do supply drives for us, or
donors who choose to sponsor an animal’s needs to help ease the burden. We also do a number of large and small fundraisers to help offset our costs and we coordinate with local donors for specific grants, such as the maC.A.R.E.S. Fund for emergency medical care. It truly takes a village to rescue the needy and forgotten animals of our community. Speaking of villages, we cannot forget about the men and women who rescue and foster these animals. Their “thank you”s are puppy kisses, happy families, and the tail wags that come with a furry friend in your home and heart. It comes with removing animals from terrible situations or meeting their nutrition and medical needs and seeing them recover and thrive. There has been a tremendous amount of coverage lately about the side effects of rescuing and cases of Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder that we, as rescuers, deal with daily. How do we get through it all? By laughing, crying and the aforementioned puppy kisses plus wonderful folks willing to join the “herd” and donating their time or resources to help cover the real cost of rescuing an animal. We conquer these challenges and each person who helps in whatever way they can proves there is good in the world. With our volunteers and donors we make the world a better place for our furry and feathered companions. Would You Like an All-Natural Way to Manage Your Pet’s Allergies?
A
topic dermatitis (allergies to environmental allergens) is the second most common allergy of dogs and cats. It means animals have developed an allergy to environmental pollens, molds, house dust mites and other common airborne substances. The most common symptoms of canine and feline atopic dermatitis include itching, scratching, licking and chewing the feet, legs and any other part of their body excessively, rubbing on the furniture, carpet or walls, hair loss, foul odor from the skin, scaling and flaking. Atopic dermatitis is genetic and occurs when a pet’s immune system reacts abnormally to allergens which are inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Symptoms can occur only during the spring to fall seasons or all year round. Unfortunately, once pets develop allergies they usually worsen with each year. Pets do not grow out of atopic dermatitis, they worsen with age.
Management of Atopic Dermatitis There are numerous treatment options for atopic dermatitis. Most of them include medications such as prednisone (steroid), antihistamines, Atopica (cyclosporine), and Apoquel which help provide temporary relief of allergy symptoms. These symptomatic treatments only address the animal’s symptoms and require long-term use with possible long-term side effects. None address the underlying disease or stop the progression of the allergy. Thus your pet’s allergies can gradually worsen over time despite being on these medications.
Now the All-Natural Way to Manage Atopic Dermatitis Allergen Specific Immunotherapy is the only treatment known to actually alter the course of the disease, rather than mask the symptoms. It builds up your pet’s immunity to allergens through a

series of injections or oral drops with increasingly larger doses of an allergy serum specifically formulated to your pet’s sensitivities. This treatment is effective for allergies associated with pollen, molds and house dust mites. This is NOT a medication, this is a natural solution that does not “cover up” or suppress your pet’s immune system. Allergen specific immunotherapy works to regulate (or normalize) the immune system naturally using small amounts of the naturally-occurring allergen(s). Immunotherapy is believed to change the pet’s actual allergic response, it is the only treatment that can prevent a worsening of your pet’s allergies. Over time, immunotherapy can lead to a long-term solution for an animal’s allergies. The best part of immunotherapy, is it’s been shown to have no long-term side effects.
How is Allergen Specific Immunotherapy Formulated? Allergen specific immunotherapy (allergy serum) is formulated from the results of an allergy test. Allergy testing can be done by either intradermal testing (skin testing) or by blood testing. It identifies which trees, weeds, grasses, molds and house dust mites are causing the skin problems or allergy symptoms. The gold standard is the intradermal testing. Numerous studies have repeatedly shown this test to be more accurate than blood testing. This form of testing is usually only available through board certified dermatologists. These specialists have been trained through residency programs and years of practice to perform and read the test results in order to formulate the serum accurately.
Two Forms of Allergen Specific Immunotherapy Administration Allergy Specific Immunotherapy (Allergy serum) used to be administered through injections only. These were small needles with small amounts of the allergy serum which was administered into the subcutaneous tissue (fatty tissue) on the back of the neck of the pet. Now there is oral immunotherapy (Sublingual Drops). Oral immunotherapy has been proven to be just as efficacious as injections. It is much easier to administer and is readily accepted by the pet. Oral immunotherapy is dispensed out of a pump, right into the pet’s mouth, then absorbed through the mucous membranes. Typically, it is given every day or sometimes twice daily. At our clinic we have had extremely good results with our oral formulations. Many patients are getting relief from their symptoms within a few months of treatment. We are even seeing some patients who have previously failed injectable immunotherapy have success with oral immunotherapy. If you would like more information or have questions about allergies, please call us at Animal Allergy and Ear Clinic at 503- 574-4150. We can provide help and answer any questions you may have. I work out of Happy Tails Emergency Clinic in Greensboro one week of each month, however, you can call my office at any time. Milan.
Hello, my name is Milan. I’m a grey and white female with big, bright green eyes and was born in June 2016. I came to AARF when my four kittens and I were abandoned by our previous owners. I’m a beautiful cat and am very sweet. I love attention and love being petted. I also don’t mind being picked up and held. If you have any questions about me, contact my foster mom through PetFinder.com.
You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n
Kadee
was found in a parking lot on a cold, windy day. When her foster human opened a car door she jumped right in. She was severely underweight (3 pounds) and her paws were raw from walking so much. Kadee is a sweet, affectionate cat. She gets along with other cats once she gets to know them. Kadee was born around 2/1/2014 and is spayed and up-to-date on shots. Contact Kadee’s foster mom through PetFinder.com for more information. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Phoenix.
My name is Phoenix. I’m one of many kittens in the AARF program waiting for a forever home. I’m a DMH grey and white male and was born around April 27, 2017. I’m unique looking because of the grey markings on my face. I came to AARF when my mom, siblings and I were abandoned by our previous owners. I love to play and cuddle. I like to play with my siblings like all kittens do, but I also like to get pets and head scratches! If you have any questions about me contact my foster mom through PetFinder.com. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n
Sable
is a beautiful chocolate Burmese/DSH mix. The light undercoat is apparent in her picture. She was abandoned at the AARF house, but is a happy and friendly girl with lots of love. She is very outgoing and talkative. She’s looking for a home with people who will adore her. We’re not sure of her age, but the vet thinks she was probably born around 2007. She is full of energy and full of life. Sable is hyperthyroid and needs thyroid medication for the rest of her life in order to maintain her weight. Sable is spayed, current on shots and FIV/FELV negative. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

loves to play with people, toys and other cats. She is the one that will sneak around the corner and jump out to greet you. She likes to climb on the cat climber, then snuggle into a little ball for a catnap. She often gets in the corner of the chair and purrs herself to sleep. She enjoys playing with her sisters and gets along well with other cats and children. Since she was bottlefed, she loves to be around people and be held. Virginia is a great kitty and was born around Feb. 21, 2017. Please feel free to contact her foster mom through PetFinder.com.

Rosie
Rose
loves to be around other dogs and is semi-interested in what a cat really is.... She is currently in a foster home and Rosie and her foster parents are getting along swimmingly. She loves to take long walks around the neighborhood and to be challenged in a friendly game of tug-of-war. She has lived with a six year old little person and was delighted to have a two-legged friend. Rosie spends her days lounging around the house when her foster parents are not at home. She does fine in a crate and only lets you know, for the first few minutes, that she would be perfectly comfortable on the couch. Rosie does like to curl up in your lap when you watch a little TV in the evenings.
and Joe are currently in the same foster family together. They love each other, though realize that sometimes in life you have to grow up and make your own loving family. Each morning is filled with a warmup run, a kiss, another warm-up game and then a cuddle. Rose and Joe both appreciate a good chew toy and now realize that their foster dad’s shoes are not their toys. They are quite content and proud owners of their very own chew toys. Rose and Joe like walks around the neighborhood. They then enjoy a day of learning why dad’s chair is so comfortable, they like to keep it warm and just right for dad’s return. Once mom is home, they’ll curl up for some love and a little evening news.

schedule, she has easily found a routine for bathroom breaks. In fact, Sierra seems to think she needs a job to do, clearing the back yard of squirrels, birds, leaves that move, she is great at making sure all is clear so that you might teach her some tricks and not be distracted. Sierra knows the commands sit, go lay down, no (except when jumping), shake, let’s go, inside/outside. She gets excited when new people come around and likes to show off how she can jump, jump, jump. This is being worked on, as well as walking on a leash. Sierra is realizing that she has a lot to learn and do and she is pretty aware that you can teach her all kinds of new things!
loves his foster sister Rose, but knows that they might not get adopted together. Joe loves a delicious meal and is continually having his waistline monitored so that he gains just enough weight, but not too much. He loves his new chew toys that don’t include daddy’s shoes… Joe loves to be petted and to climb up in a lap while one partakes of a little TV. When there are no other cats around, she’s very loving and laid back. She loves to play with toys, especially ones with feathers. She loves to curl up next to the TV Tailless Cat Rescue or look out a window at the birds. Unlike most cats, Jewelz LOVES baths! is a domestic medium hair calico, a little over a year old. Mia is an avid bird watcher, catcher of stray moths, and connoisseur of sunny lounging spots. A perfect day for Mia includes playing with her stuffed mouse or laser pointer, basking in sunlight, and snoozing quietly while you do human things. She prefers two tummy rubs, but not three, and MUST be allowed to greet you at the door when you return home. She gets along well with other cats, but would do best in a home with no dogs or small children. She will come when called or when she decides it’s time for food. Rattler
is a German Shepherd and Husky mix who has had a rough first three years but he is the sweetest dog! Nitro is an energetic boy who loves to play and is very affectionate, giving kisses to all who accept them. He loves people and is great with other dogs. Nitro is definitely a man’s best friend and has been waiting a long time for the right family to call his own. Jax
is a sweet senior who recently had his life upended when his father had to move into a nursing facility. Luckily, Rattler was able to join our program and move into a loving foster home with a wonderful family who has been showering him with love and affection. He loves other dogs, is fantastic with children and is just a joy to be around. He is up-to-date on vaccines, neutered and housebroken. Don’t let his age fool you! This boy has plenty of pep still left in his step and he’s happy to trot alongside of you and explore the world on his walks. Rattler could really use a steady home where he will continue to be loved and cherished as he has been all of his life. Are you his forever family?
is a super energetic two year old Boxer mix who is eager to please, especially when treats are involved! He is a cuddle bug, through and through, opting to settle on the couch in a human’s lap and snooze, instead of on his bed. Jax loves other dogs and would love to have a fur sibling in the home to play with. He is housebroken, crate-trained and is getting better and better on leash. Jax needs an active but also calm and patient family willing to help him burn off his abundant energy and use positive reinforcement when training him. If you can provide this boy the home he deserves, submit an Adoption Interest Form today!

Girl
Andy
is a bit shy but is working on being more social every day. She likes to be scratched around her shoulders and neck and when you find just the right spot, she will drop to the ground and purr with happiness. She does well with kids, but loud sounds and fast movements tend to make her pull back to re-evaluate the situation. She likes to have a hiding place she can run to when she gets scared. While Girl is loving, she is not a lap cat. Girl is a talker, has a soft meow and enjoys greeting you when you enter the room. She likes to be near you and to have your attention. She has tested positive for FIV – Feline Immunodeficiency Virus- but currently exhibits no signs of the disease. Girl has a lot of love to offer her new family!
is around 2 years old and has lots of personality and love to give! If you’re looking for a new furry friend, Andy just might be your purr-fect roommate! While he can’t help with the utilities, he promises to never leave dishes in the sink and always keep your lap warm. He has a laid-back, friendly attitude, loves to play with toys and watch birds outside. Andy is litter-trained and uses a scratching post AND tolerates nail trims! He is good with young children and other cats and has great manners-doesn’t jump on tables/counters and never tries to steal food, waits patiently to be fed and won’t wake you before dawn meowing for food. He’s ready to move in with his forever family!

Cooper. What a cutie! We were told that Cooper is a Dingo/Lab mix born near 5/3/17. He is a darling pup with four siblings that also need homes. Mom was about 35 lbs. so Coop will probably be 35 lbs. plus. He lives with cats and other dogs so he is acclimated with both. This well-rounded pup is now taking applications for his forever home. Call 336-574-9600 for more information. n
Lilly.
Precious Lilly is Cooper’s sissy. She’s just the cutest little monkey! Her loving, sweet personality will get this girl far in life. Lilly, we were told, is a Dingo/Lab mix puppy. Mattie. Did you know that 80% of all orange tabby cats are males? Mattie is our rare little girl orange tabby. She’s sweet and cuddly and just what the doctor ordered. Born on or near 3/11/17 she is playful, inquisitive, and all that a healthy kitten should be. Mattie will soon be spayed but she is ready for someone to put their name on her now!

Pebbles
is a sweet 3 year old female Chihuahua that weighs 5.6 lbs. She is spayed, UTD on shots and on HW preventative. She loves to just sit with her foster mom or dad and watch TV. She can cuddle for long periods of time and she enjoys being loved on. She is house-trained but has occasional accidents. Pebbles can be jealous of other dogs so her foster parents think Chihuahua Rescue that she would do best in a home with no other pets. She has had no exposure to cats or small children but her foster mom would not recommend them because she can get a little testy, if she feels threatened.

Huey
is a 2 year old neutered male cat who was found as a stray with his brothers Stewie and Dewie and brought into the shelter. Huey is very sweet and affectionate and loves to be underfoot all the time rubbing up against your legs, demanding attention (in the most polite way possible). Huey does have neurological deficiencies that cause him to wobble when he walks but that doesn’t slow him down and shouldn’t stop him from finding a loving, forever home. Desi & Ricky.
Sunny.
Desi (gray and tan) and Ricky (white) are refined gentlemen whose elderly owner went to hospice. They are purebred Havanese. Desi is 13 and Ricky is 12. They have always been together and won’t be separated now. They like everyone they meet and are wonderful travelers. They are mostly house-trained and don’t mind using belly bands. These are loving boys who desire a quiet home in which someone is around most of the time. They are both healthy for their ages. Desi and Ricky are in the custody of Havanese Rescue International (HRI) and are being fostered in Greensboro. Contact their foster mom at 530-739-5851 or email bali-beach-villas@earthlink.net. The adoption fee for this pair is $150.
Ten year old Sunny was a tiny 4 pounds of terrified Chihuahua when found as a stray with missing fur, oozing wounds, rotten teeth and a mammary growth. Poor baby! Well, all those issues have been taken care of. She has a great appetite and is looking and feeling better each day. She loves all the new attention from her friends and can now zoom around the play yard. She is turning into a feisty little thing and is loving life! No little children in her new home, please. Adoption donation $100.

Daisy
Hattie
came to us when her owner died and left 4 dogs and 15 cats. She is 4 years old and was very overweight at 66 pounds (picture is when she arrived). She is now 51 trim pounds! She is a friendly girl who is happy to meet new people friends, has been good with all ages at adoption fairs, and has been good with new dogs here. Once established in a home, she can be protective of her family and friends so needs to unlearn that behavior. She loves going for strolls on the leash. She also loves just hanging out with family. Adoption donation $150.
is a cute Toy Fox Terrier/Chihuahua mix (maybe?) who is really just a puppy at 1 year old. She is a petite dynamo at 10 healthy and fit pounds. If you like the Toy Fox Terrier personality, you will adore Hattie! She is sweet, friendly, confident and VERY energetic! Hattie is a happy little girl, brimming with joy. She has been great with other dogs here. She knows commands, is super trainable, is snuggly and may be housetrained already. Adoption donation $200.

Forrest
Luna
is a cheerful 9-10 month old, approximately 28 pound puppy who spent his life tied to a porch banister, often without food or water. One time he tried to jump off the porch in desperation and nearly hung himself! Forrest is DELIGHTED to be in rescue! He loves to play with the other dogs here but is territorial in a home setting so is best as an only dog. Forrest is very smart and trainable, so eager to please. He has lots of puppy enthusiasm and joy and he has been great with people. He needs an active family that enjoys plenty of walks and play time. Adoption donation $150.
is a 17 pound, 9 year old Rat Terrier mix who was found as a stray. She seems to have healthy joints and can run and spring up easily onto a chair or lap. She acts like a much younger pup! Luna is sociable, confident and acts like she spent most of her life in a good home. She is affectionate and loves being around people. She enjoys car rides and adventures so would love an active family. Please see her full listing and video at www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org. Adoption donation $100.

Kevin Bacon
was found limping as a stray. He is now 2 years old and currently 80 lbs. and still growing. He loves belly rubs and is good around kids. He is living at Camp Weaver in their mini farm area with his friend, Smiley Bruce, and is enjoying the experience. The camp staff has been feeding Kevin out of puzzle feeders with great success. Puzzle feeders are great for dogs as well as pigs to help slow down their eating habits. Parker
is a sweet girl that was found running along Gate City Blvd. 5 months ago by two very kind gentlemen. They turned to RDF recently, to help find Parker a home of her own since they already had two dogs. Parker is such a love! She enjoys belly rubs and snuggling! She has been good with kids and great with other dogs, but we have not yet tested her with cats. Parker needs to go to a home with another dog as she bonds very well with others and prefers to have a doggie friend. Without another dog she tends to get nervous when left home alone. She is crate-trained and house-trained and would be a great addition to any family! Visit www.reddogfarm.com to adopt Parker today! n
Glenda,
the Good Pig, came to us through Animal Control after being brought into the shelter. She is overweight but has slimmed down considerably in her foster home. Glenda stays active moving around the pasture all day with the goats that she shares her foster home with. She gets along great other pigs, goats, chickens and even the family dog. Glenda is very friendly with kids and adults and comes running when she hears the family’s voices. Like most pigs Glenda loves a good ear scratching or belly rub and her favorite treats are bananas. If you can provide Glenda with an appropriate home for a pig please fill out an application to adopt her at www.reddogfarm.com. n
Layla.
We are very excited to have Layla in training for a few weeks with Charlie and Julie Stevens. Layla is making steady progress with basic ground work and just becoming more comfortable around humans. Layla first met Charlie in an hour long demonstration where he was able to catch, halter and place a saddle pad on her back with her becoming much more confident with every step. Seeing the potential in Layla and wanting to help us find her the perfect home, the Stevens volunteered to take Layla to their farm to continue the progress started at the demonstration. We all see tons of potential in this mare so if you are looking for a project horse please consider Layla. Visit www.reddogfarm.com to see all of our horses. n

Sammy is one good looking fella! At his young age, estimated at 4, Sammy has been through more than a young man should have. He has been through multiple homes, and reportedly even thrown out of a moving vehicle! Sammy is a professional counter surfer and trash sorter, and loves to be a full-time shadow. Sammy has been socialized at daycare without any problems, but will need an adopter who can work Tarheel Weimrescue with him on socializing properly with an owner as he becomes protective and may not be friendly if out on a walk. Sammy is a big guy so also needs an owner strong enough to manage him--and while large, he’s not overweight. Sammy has never been around cats, so it’s best to avoid that option. Sammy loves to play with his ball, his chew bone, snuggling, and sunbathing. Betsy is a gentle, sweet middle-aged Dobergirl. We named her Betsy as a nod to Betsy Ross and Flag Day. Betsy came to us from another rescue who told us that while she apparently had been kept inside as a young pup, she had lived outside Doberman Rescue of the Triad most of her life with other dogs until being surrendered. As a result, she has some callouses and skin tags on her thigh and rump. Thankfully, she has adapted very well to inside living, and her neatness proves she was house-trained when young. Betsy is very calm, loves playing with toys, sits on command and doesn’t jump up. She’s good with children and other dogs but will chase cats in an attempt to play with them. Read more about Betsy at www.doberman-rescue.com. Make an appointment to meet her after your application has been approved. n

Help us find Rugger a forever home with lots of love and care! Adoption donation $200. All vetting is up-to-date, he’s microchipped, neutered and on flea/tick and heartworm preventative. Misty.
She is a lover of good food and great laps. She was found on the streets foraging for food and shelter. Her former family didn’t want her anymore, so Feline Friends came in to help! Misty is estimated to be 3-5 years old. She has tested positive for FIV, but that doesn’t mean that she can’t have a long and loving life as your constant companion. She gets along with her kitty foster family, but she would prefer to be an only cat. She would love to be the center of your world!!! Misty has had a hard few years, but she is now ready to be your fuzzy feline friend furever. Adoption fee is $75 or $125 for two as kittens do much better in pairs. Please email felinefriendsnc@gmail.com for an adoption application. n
Amelia.
Eggs
was dropped in front of our facility around Easter so that is where his goofy name comes from. He is a little guy at about 20 lbs. with a big, big heart. He would do best in a fenced yard since he has a wandering eye. Eggs is not quite 2 years old and he is just a snuggle bug. Adoption donation $200. All vetting is up-to-date, he’s microchipped, neutered and on flea/ tick and heartworm preventative. Visit www.ruffloverescue.com/ adopt to make this pup a member of your family. n

This sweet girl is Amelia. She is about 3 years old. Ideally, Amelia would love a home without dogs but she is OK with low key and low energy dogs. Amelia is a super sweet and loving girl. Adoption fee is $75 or $125 for two as kittens do much better in pairs. Please email felinefriendsnc@gmail.com for an adoption application. n
Winnie.
We just can’t understand why no one has snapped up this beauty yet! Say hello to Winnie who had been living under a porch her whole life. Only a short while though. Thankfully, Winnie was found and later came to find love, care and affection, in her foster home through Feline Friends. She is a gorgeous girl! She really enjoys the company of other cats. Winnie can be shy at first, but after she gets to know you, she is all purrs. Winnie doesn’t like dogs, but she does like laps! Winnie is less than a year old. Adoption fee is $75 or $125 for two as kittens do much better in pairs. Please email felinefriendsnc@gmail.com for an adoption application. n
Meet Rosita! If you’re looking for your dream girl, look no further because Rosita is a true gem! This special lady is blind but that doesn’t stop her from loving life, car rides, walks, affection, and every other living creature from dogs of all sizes to cats, birds, and, of course, kids. Rosita adapts to her surroundings quickly and has no problem navigating a home once she learns the layout. Just because she can’t see Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue doesn’t mean she doesn’t have her Boxer wiggle down to a science when she hears someone’s voice! Rosita is a calm, gentle girl who is sure to steal your heart the moment you meet her. To apply for this beauty, visit www.blueridgeboxerrescue.com today! n

DAVIDSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER 336.357.0805 / www.co.davidson.nc.us/animalshelter/
Halo.
My bags are packed and I’m ready to go! I’m as cute as they come with my short little legs and my adorable underbite. After wandering the streets, I found myself at the shelter. I guess my owner didn’t think I was worth looking for because they didn’t come get me. Well, the nice shelter staff see something special in me and say that I’ll make someone a wonderful companion. I think so too! I like to go for walks, chase squirrels, and lounge around on the couch on rainy days. I’m 5 years old, already spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. They did say I was positive for those nasty heartworms but the shelter has started me on medicine to get rid of those little buggers. My adoption fee is only $70. Please call the Davidson County Animal Shelter at 336-357-0805 for more information. n
Harley
has a big “To-Do” list for this summer and he’s hoping that someone can help him get some things checked off. #1) Find a home! #2) Go on a road trip. #3) Eat some ice cream. #4) Go swimming. #5) Have a picnic in the park. #6) Chase some squirrels. #7) Take a nap under a shade tree. Harley is now taking applications for anyone that can help him complete his list this summer. He is 3-4 years old, neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped. Harley is positive for heartworms but has already started treatment. His adoption fee is $70 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Please call 336-357-0805 to learn more about Harley. n
Magnolia.
I was saying to myself just this morning, “Magnolia,” I said, “Magnolia, you know what you need? You need a person all your own.” So I sat down to write this post for the nice shelter folks because apparently that’s the kind of thing they do - find nice people for extremely intelligent and lovable, kitties who are...I shudder to type this...LAPLESS. That’s right: I have no lap to call my own. Could you be persuaded to volunteer yours for me to nap in? If so, I am currently taking interviews for my very own human at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Please apply in person. n

Mary
quite contrary. This 3 year old lady is keen on finding her forever person or family - preferably sooner rather than later. She has been waiting ever since early January, for that special someone to take her home. Mary enjoys getting outside for long walks, playing and going for rides in the car. Her adoption fee is $55 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Mary is a very loyal dog and needs a home without any other pets. Please call 336-357-0805 for more information. n
Weezer
is a 2 year old boy who is the best of both worlds. He wants nothing more than to cuddle, make biscuits, and rub his head against you. Weezer loves attention, enjoys playing with toys, and engaging in the occasional game of cat and mouse. Weezer is neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. If you are interested in meeting Weezer or making him a part of your home, call the Davidson County Animal Shelter at 336-357-0805. His adoption fee is $50. n
Leon
is a savvy cat that knows the score. He doesn’t mind entertaining himself but he would like to have a human companion on the other end of the couch and a nice scratch behind the ear after a long day of playing cat-and-mouse. If you’re looking for a resourceful member to add to your team, then add Leon to your roster. He will be your MVC (Most Valuable Cat). Leon’s adoption fee is $55 from the Davidson County Animal Shelter. He has already been neutered, completely vaccinated, tested negative for FIV/FELV, and microchipped. Please call 336-357-0805 for more information. n

Special Feature
Focus on: Guilford County Pet Responsibility Program
by: Dr. C. Noureddine, DVM, MS (Biology), MS Candidate (Veterinary Forensic Sciences)
Recipient of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association’s (NCVMA) High Five Grant!
W
hat does it mean to be a responsible pet owner? Is it possible to solve the pet overpopulation problem in Guilford County? What positive effects might we have on society when we help children understand the importance of displaying love and kindness to animals? The Guilford County Pet Responsibility Program (GCPRP) seeks to address these important topics through a unique and interactive program with 4th grade students in Guilford County. Recently, the program became the recipient of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association’s (NCVMA) High Five Grant. This generous grant is a very important step in the Pet Responsibility Program‘s goal of reaching all 4th grade students in Guilford County. Now in it’s fourth year, the GCPRP is modeled after the very successful Moore County Citizens’ Pet Responsibility Committee. Ruby Wescoat is the Coordinator for the GCPRP. After several years volunteering with animal shelters and animal welfare organizations, Ruby saw first hand the impact of pet overpopulation. Ruby decided that a program like the one in Moore County could be a meaningful way to spread the word that overpopulation is a fixable problem here in Guilford County. Additionally, by allowing children to see that they can be responsible pet owners who display kindness to all animals, the program could also benefit animals and society. The Pet Responsibility Program is entirely volunteer-taught, and it includes a total of six 40-minute lessons for 4th grade students. During the first 5 weeks, students are introduced to the concepts of responsible pet ownership, pet overpopulation, spaying and neutering, appropriate ways to interact with animals, kindness to animals, and safety around dogs and cats. Students learn about the basic needs of animals (e.g., regular veterinary exams, wellness care through vaccines and parasite control, nutritious food, fresh water, warm and dry shelter, exercise, and love). In the sixth and final week, all the 4th grade classrooms from the school gather for an entertaining and rewarding assembly. This concluding week of the program is geared towards empowering the students to believe they can be responsible pet owners and encouraging them to carry on the message of responsible pet ownership to others. The Pet Responsibility Program is presented as an integral part of participating schools’ Character Education Program, and it is linked to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Students learn about empathy, patience, and kindness. They see how the decisions they make as individuals can affect entire communities. The children are also taught about the importance of standing up for others. Classroom teachers appreciate that the program engages students while also integrating math and writing with Students greet a dog named Skyler after important concepts related to asking permission to approach. responsibility and character.

The GCPRP works in collaboration with a number of local organizations. Guilford County’s Department of Animal Control has requested the GCPRP’s help in sharing information about rabies prevention and local animal welfare laws. One of the most memorable experiences for students is getting to meet and interact with certified Pet Partners therapy dogs and handlers. GCPRP students also participate in a writing contest, the winners of which receive vouchers for a free spay or neuter from Loving Pet Inn Adoptions’ STOP Program (Spay Today Outreach Program). The program’s final assembly at each school features guest speakers from the community. Since 2013, the GCPRP has taught over 1900 4th grade students in 12 Guilford County elementary schools with only a handful of volunteers. A major long-term goal of the GCPRP is to see every 4th grade classroom in Guilford County (that’s more than 70 elementary schools!) receive GCPRP lessons. The GCPRP volunteers all concur that the level of student engagement, enthusiasm, and participation is impressive with each school attended. The volunteers also find great enjoyment in watching these children realize that they each can make a positive difference in the lives of animals. Prior to 2017, all GCPRP funding had come through private donations. The GCPRP was thrilled to receive the $5000 NCVMA High Five Grant in January 2017, which is awarded to “organizations who promote community service as well as compassion and health for the people and animals of North Carolina” (NCVMA website). The grant is helping the GCPRP expand their reach into additional Guilford County elementary schools. The GCPRP is also working to build bridges with local college-age students to enhance volunteer recruitment. Finally, the GCPRP is exploring ways to help raise community awareness about the link between animal abuse and interpersonal violence. The GCPRP’s messages of responsible pet ownership and kindness to animals are A dog named Piper entertains students important steps in preventing with her tricks. animal abuse. By exploring partnerships with community groups and agencies, the GCPRP hopes to benefit efforts against both animal abuse and interpersonal violence.
