Raccoons & Skunks & Deer...Oh, My! Almost every wild animal can transmit a bacterial infection called Leptospirosis. Your dog can become infected if its eyes, nose or mouth contact any water source or wetland—including wet grass—which is contaminated by infected wildlife’s waste. Leptospirosis now infects over 37% of city dogs, causing severe, often fatal liver disease. It is the leading cause of acute kidney failure in dogs...and infected dogs can transmit this infection to YOU. Protect your dog by having your veterinarian administer an inexpensive 4-way vaccine for this preventable disease.

ON THE COVER: Basil is a neutered male, white and brown, Pit Bull Terrier mix who’s around 1 year, 7 months old. He’s a quiet, gentle, well behaved and affectionate dog. Once he settles down, Basil walks nicely on leash, taking direction well! Basil does great with the sit command, particularly if he sees a biscuit coming his way. This sweetheart is blessed with a handsome, short hair coat, which should lead to minimal shedding. In addition, this boy really enjoys a ear/head/neck/chest and/or belly scratch. He’s an awfully sweet dog, and he will show appreciation to you for any attention by giving you lots of doggy kisses. Basil is a super smart dog who learns quickly, and always aims to please!! For more information, call Burlington Animal Services, at 336-578-0343 or go online: www.burlingtonnc.gov/pets for information about all the fine animals for adoption.

Vet’s Corner A native of Virginia, Dr. Hodges came to Greensboro in 1985 and graduated from UNCG with a Biology degree. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1997 from Tuskegee University in Alabama and currently co-owns Brassfield Animal Hospital. His interest in alternative medicine led him to get certifications in Hunter Hodges, DVM acupuncture and chiropractic Brassfield Animal Hospital which he has integrated into his practice to treat dogs, horses and cats. He is a member of the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture, International Veterinary Chiropractic Association, NCVMA, AVMA, and AAEP.

Complementary & Alternative Therapy for Pets

T

he term complementary is used to indicate other modalities that are an adjunct to Western care and not only an alternative. Examples would be Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Herbal, Laser, etc. These modalities may provide alternative outcomes including reduction in medications needed, an option to surgery and fewer complications with treatments. Complementary modalities can enhance the quality of care that we can provide, and more importantly enhance the quality of life for our pets. Imagine for a moment that your dog has significant osteoarthritis or a soft tissue injury. To develop a treatment plan with conventional Western medicine, one would first get a complete history, examine the pet and note any observations. Radiographs would be the most common diagnostic, followed with a treatment plan of restricted activity and anti-inflammatory medications scientifically proven to relieve this type of pain. At this point, a complementary therapy could be easily integrated into the plan. In caring for animals, my thought process is and always will be rooted in the principles learned in veterinary school, but I have also come to understand that to do what’s best for my patients I have to keep an open mind and consider alternative therapies to complement the Western approach. ACUPUNCTURE Based on traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture aims to correct imbalances in the body’s Qi (energy flow) that are believed to cause health problems. In Western terms it is believed that pain impulses can be blocked before reaching the brain or that the brain

can be stimulated to release powerful endorphins to ease pain. Very fine needles are inserted under the skin and left for 15-20 minutes which is well tolerated by most animals. Other techniques may involve mild electric currents (electroacupuncture), liquid vitamin injections (aquapuncture) and even lasers to stimulate points. CHIROPRACTIC Involves careful and accurate manipulation of joints of the spine and extremities to help re-establish proper alignment, reset joint receptors and increase range of motion. Ninety percent of the input to the nervous system is from joint and stretch receptors located in tendons, ligaments and muscles. The nervous system runs the whole animal, therefore, managing the nervous system through these receptors can provide efficient and accurate care. When a more normal range of motion is re-established by the adjustment, the animal can move in a more comfortable and coordinated manner. Symptoms like abnormal gait, back pain and reluctance to jump or climb stairs will often improve. LASER Laser therapy is the painless use of laser energy to generate a photochemical response in damaged or dysfunctional tissue. Laser therapy can alleviate pain, reduce inflammation and accelerate recovery from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. As rehabilitation specialists know, the main goal of treatment for many painful, debilitating conditions is to facilitate improved function and mobility. Laser therapy is a drug-free, surgery-free technique to help make that goal a reality. TAKE-HOME MESSAGE The use of complementary medicine has been growing very rapidly for the past 10 years and as more people utilize it for their own health, they naturally seek it out for their pets. Owners frequently will not notice the effects of complementary treatments until several days after the procedure and in some cases it may take multiple treatments to see changes. The complexity of each case often determines the number of treatments needed and the frequency. So the next time your pet has an injury, ask your veterinarian if there are any complementary (alternative) therapies that may aid in the healing process, and then find a veterinarian that has received the appropriate training and certifications.

Cover Story

UNTETHERED By Laura Michel, Burlington Animal Services

Aphrodite

T

he great and wise Mahatma Gandhi said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. I hold that the more helpless a creature the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of humankind.” A simple, yet profound and thought-provoking statement, wouldn’t you agree? Those who work in the world of animal welfare might argue that if this statement is true, then we have a long way to go before achieving greatness and moral progress. In all fairness, progress has been made through the years with legislation ranging from the federal Animal Welfare Act to North Carolina’s Susie’s Law, being passed to protect animals from mistreatment and

Hugger 12

abuse. In recent years, anti-tethering laws have been passed in several North Carolina counties including Forsyth and Guilford. The City of Burlington began the 18 month implementation of its new anti-tethering ordinance in January 2015, with it taking full effect July 1, 2016. Anti-tethering laws make it illegal to chain or tether a dog outside for an extended period of time. Some communities prohibit tethering entirely while some allow short periods of time if the owner is with the dog. Anti-tethering laws help protect innocent animals, help create a safer and more humane community and they help reduce the number of calls animal control officers make, at taxpayer expense, to investigate these cases. Tethering or chaining is defined as fastening a dog to a stationary object or trolley system with a chain, rope or other tie-out as a means to restrain or confine them. Walking a dog on a leash is not considered tethering. One thing that I personally will never understand is why someone owns a dog, but keeps it chained up outside, never bringing it indoors to be part of the family or spending time with it outside. What is the point? Why own a dog at all? Many consider the tethering of a dog to be inhumane as dogs are naturally very social and need to be a part of their ‘pack’, whether it is two-legged or four-legged. They must have interaction with people and other animals to thrive. Tethering a dog to one place continuously deprives it

Princess

June 2015 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

of socialization and can cause great psychological damage brought on by isolation, boredom and frustration. This can often lead to a change in their personality. A once tame, friendly, content dog can become anxious, unhappy, fractious and aggressive. Tethering dogs can also be dangerous and unsafe. They can become entangled and choke to death. In extreme cases, collars can become embedded in the dog’s neck causing serious injury, requiring it to be removed surgically. Typically, tethered dogs are the victims of abuse or neglect, they may be fed and given fresh water only sporadically and may be forced to relieve themselves in the same confined area. Left outdoors for long periods or permanently, these dogs are exposed to disease, extreme weather conditions and the threat of attack from other animals with no way to defend themselves. Chained or tethered dogs become aggressive from this intense confinement and lack of socialization. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, a chained dog is 2.8 times more likely to bite than an unchained dog. Even if they do receive adequate care, their lives are frustrating, sad and lonely. In short, there are better, more humane alternatives to tethering. The most preferable solution is to bring them in the house to be part of the family. If your dog is kept outdoors due to behavior or house-training issues, there are many resources available to help solve these problems. Burlington Animal Services’ Pet Resource Guide, available on our website (www.burlingtonNC.gov/pets), has lots of valuable information and resources to help with many common problems. Common behavior issues may include: House-training - It takes time, patience and consistency, but it is simple enough to accomplish. If your dog has been living

outside, he/she is already conditioned to relieving him/herself there; much of the training is done. Now, it’s just a matter of establishing a routine and schedule for the dog. A simple internet search will yield numerous websites with helpful tips and information about house-training. Behavior – Most behavioral problems (barking, chewing, destruction, etc.) are due to boredom and/or frustration and can be resolved with simple exercise, attention, and consistency. Taking your dog for a walk each day is helpful, and it’s good for you, too! Obedience training can be very helpful in solving many problems. Consider enrolling your pet in a local dog training class or consult a pet behaviorist. It is well worth it. Also, providing appropriate toys for chewing and playing with will help alleviate stress and boredom. Destructive behavior – If your dog is destructive only when left alone, consider crate-training. Crating your pet can be very helpful in eliminating this problem. When properly trained, the crate becomes a “denlike” place for your pet and will provide a safe and comfortable place for him/her while you are away. If you have to be gone for long periods, consider having a friend, neighbor or pet sitter come by to let your dog out or take it for a walk. Spaying or neutering - Some behaviors such as spraying and marking, escaping and roaming in search of a mate can be resolved by spaying or neutering your dog. It will also give you a healthier companion and eliminate unwanted litters. There are numerous veterinarians and low-cost clinics in the Triad. The Spay & Neuter Clinic of

Alamance County’s fees range from $50 to $90 depending on the species and gender. Addressing and overcoming these problems can ultimately lead to a happy and rewarding relationship with your dog. However, if bringing your dog into your house is not possible and you don’t have a fenced yard, there are other options. You can find information about building your own fence, having a fence installed, switching to a kennel enclosure or dog lot, and alternative fencing on the ‘Tethering Restrictions’ page of Burlington Animal Services’ website. For individuals who qualify based on financial need, there are several organizations in the Triad that can help with installing a fence. For Alamance County residents, Friends of Mebane Animals (FoMA) is currently developing a new program, “Freedom Fences”, to begin mid-2015. Individuals requesting assistance can sign up to be placed on their wait list now. This program will provide assistance to needy owners of tethered dogs in Alamance County. Their website is www.mebanesfurrycitizens.org. In Guilford County, you can find information at Unchain Guilford (www.unchainguilford. com). Residents of Forsyth County can find information at Unchain Winston (www. forsythhumane.org/unchain-winston) and at Unchain Forsyth (www.fureverfriendsnc. org). Please visit these websites for more information or to learn how you can help by volunteering or donating. Untethering our dogs is the right and humane thing to do, and it will bring us one step closer to the greatness and moral progress Mr. Gandhi spoke about so simply.

Addison. Meet Addison! She is 1 1/2 years old, great with other dogs and cats....and obviously, cows don’t bother her a bit. She loves kids but may be better with older kids because she doesn’t understand how big she is or how strong her wagging tail can be! According to The Fort Rescue her foster mom, “she is a happy, fun-loving, big ol’ puppy looking for her forever home!”

The Skin-ny on Your Pet’s Skin

L

ong hair, short hair, curly or straight–our pets come with all sorts of styles. Some breeds are even hairless! Regardless the type, your pet’s skin and fur is the largest protective organ they have, and it is under constant assault. Keeping your pet’s skin in top shape will go a long way in ensuring their comfort and good health. Lumps and Bumps You are petting your dog (or cat) and feel something on the skin that wasn’t there yesterday. What to do now? Bumps can arise on or under the skin and can range from a mild problem to a symptom of a serious condition. First, try to part the hair to get a good look at the problem. Try to see if it is a tick or an object stuck to the skin. If so, gently remove it or seek help from your vet. If it is not something stuck, note the day that you first noticed it and call your veterinarian immediately if you are concerned or the area seems painful or uncomfortable to your pet. There are many types of masses, and some of them can be benign, or harmless. However, some types of skin masses can be cancerous and need to be removed. Your veterinarian may perform an aspirate (needle stick) or biopsy to determine if the mass needs to be addressed. It is always better to have something new checked out when the bump is small. Creepy Crawlies The skin protects muscles, nerves, and organs. It can also be prime real estate for parasites, too! Fleas and ticks are a constant threat in the southeast, and these pests can cause serious reactions and infections. The best way to prevent infection is to prevent the parasite, and there are many oral and topical options available that provide great flea and tick control. Mites such as Demodex and Sarcoptes are another problem and can first show up as hair loss or severe itching. Some of these insects and mites can also affect people, so it is important to report any changes in the hair coat or

skin as soon as you see it. Resist the urge to try any “home remedies” before an exam, as these can sometimes make the condition worse or trigger other problems that make finding the underlying cause difficult!

Itchy, Itchy Allergies It is spring, and in the South, that means pollen- and lots of it! While we sniffle and sneeze the days away, pollen and other allergens tend to make pets itchy. And when we say itchy, that can mean a lot of things. Pets can scratch with their feet, but chewing on the fur, licking the feet, or even shaking the ears or head are signs of itchiness. If you notice rust colored areas on your pet’s feet or fur, this can be a sign that your fur friend is licking, sometimes when you are not looking. Our feline and canine companions can be allergic to grass, pollen, trees, mold, storage mites, and more. They can be allergic to ingredients in their food, often a protein they have been exposed to for many years. The problem often lies in the secondary infections that occur due to the licking and irritation. If you see scabs, bumps that looks like pimples, or a moist area that has an odor, there is a good chance your pet has an infection. This bacteria or yeast can make your pet even itchier, and the itching will not go away until the infection is cleared. Often doctors use tests like skin scrapes, fungal tests, or cultures to determine what the problem may be. Thankfully, finding the right antibiotic and anti-itch medication can make a huge difference. Allergies can be difficult to dissect, but once managed, pets can live a much more comfortable life!

Getting Rid of the “Dog Smell”! Our pets get dirty and sometimes smelly. Bathing your pet can make them easier to live with, especially if they sleep in your bed! Bathing seems straightforward, but using the wrong products can make things worse. First, don’t use people products! Even gentle products like baby shampoo are designed for people skin, not pet skin, and can dry out the oils that help protect your dog’s and cat’s coat. Flea and tick products can also be dangerous and potentially toxic to many dogs and especially cats. Additionally, the flea shampoos don’t do anything for fleas once the bath is over, so don’t bother! In general, mild, non-drying pet shampoos are good for routine bathing, but if your pet has a special condition, a medicated shampoo may be best, so ask your vet! We share our lives with our pets- including our homes, our cars, and our beds. Snuggling up with your puppy or having your cat purring on your lap can make a bad day fade quickly. So, we want to be sure we can give those hugs as often as we want, and keeping your pet healthy includes the outside as well as inside.

Pet Therapy: Fostering Friendship

FOSTERING FRIENDSHIP By Geralyn Kelly

F

ostering Friendship, a therapy dog group based in Winston-Salem, began meeting a little over a year ago at the Elite Canine Dog Training Center, and currently boasts a membership roll of 19 teams, twenty humans and twenty-three dogs. Our group members are certified through Love on a Leash, an Oceanside, California-based pet therapy group. Trained evaluators, like myself, test the dogs in a variety of conditions to ensure they have the proper temperament, behavior and personality to act as part of a therapy team. We test the humans, too, ensuring they have proper control of the dogs at all times. We don’t evaluate them for compassion, caring, and good humor, but you’ll find all of these traits—and more—among the human halves of our therapy teams. Before the teams ever make it to evaluation, they must complete 22 hours of classroom training. That doesn’t include the countless hours of “off-time” practice at home. After evaluation, each team must complete ten supervised visits in a therapeutic setting (a school, a nursing home, or any other place where pet therapy might be a part of the program). There, they are observed and further evaluated by staff members as they interact with clients. It’s only after completing each of the above steps that a team becomes certified. The class hours, alone, take an average of four months. The supervised visits can take an additional ten weeks or more. It sounds like a lot of work, doesn’t it? Why on earth would anyone go through all that? Well… This past year, Fostering Friendship participated in reading

groups at South Fork, South Lexington, Midway, and Brunson Elementary schools, in addition to The Piedmont School and North Davie Middle School, helping young students gain confidence in their reading abilities. We have attended career day at both South Fork and Sherwood Forest Elementary. Our group has attended “Sib-Shops,” the special sibling support event at the Centers for Exceptional Children. There were 14 teams in attendance for the children to interact with. Fostering Friendship attended a workshop with Internal Medicine residents at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, where we discussed the effects of therapy dogs on patient care and stress relief for the staff. This summer, Fostering Friendship will be at the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and will also be a part of the YMCA summer program. And those are just the organized events, the things Fostering Friendship does as a group. Individual therapy teams have been frequent visitors to nursing homes, hospitals, and other places where a smile and an excited tail-wag are needed. So why would anyone go through all that work? Simple. Because it’s worth it.

Geralyn Kelly is the owner and operator of Elite Canine Dog Training Center in Winston-Salem. She has been working with dogs for 13 years and is certified as a Red Cross Pet First Aid & CPR Leader, an AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy, CGC, CCGC,UCGC Evaluator, a member of the Pet Professionals Guild and a Be a Tree Leader. HUMANE SOCIETY OF ALAMANCE COUNTY 336.438.2023 / www.hsaconline.org

Brady

Dixie is a sweet girl, about 3 years

is a young, intelligent Plott Hound mix. He loves the outdoors and would make a fantastic running or hiking partner! He is food motivated and already loves to show off his “sit” and “shake paws” techniques to earn treats. Brady has a good deal of energy to share but listens well to gentle but firm direction. He is affectionate and wonderful with people, and with proper introductions, great with other dogs as well! Brady has been in boarding for quite some time and while they’ve taken great care of him, this sweet boy really needs a home to relax in and a loving family to finally call his own. He is fully vetted, neutered and house-trained.

old. We believe she is an Aussie/Shepherd mix. Dixie is medium sized with a medium coat, and weighs about 45 lbs. She is calm, loving and smart and does GREAT with kids, dogs and cats. Dixie walks well on a leash and is eager to please! She has tested positive for heartworm and is receiving treatment, but she does not show any symptoms. She will be treated and is expected to make a full recovery. Dixie would be a wonderful companion for just about anyone that will give her the love she deserves!

Kylie.

Huck.

Sit and fetch... Belly rubs and naps... Playtime and meal time...This is the life of Kylie. Born 11.1.14, Kylie is loving every minute of life in her ARFP foster home. Kylie once roamed the streets, and now is enjoying a plush life complete with her choice of dog beds to curl up in. With a sweet personality that will steal your heart, Kylie is the perfect companion and addition to your home. She loves everyone, including the four-legged friends that she has made in her foster home. Thinking of adding a family member? We are pretty sure that Kylie is the perfect match.

A traveling soul... that’s our Huck. Rescued from the busy streets of Greensboro where he was dodging traffic, Huck is loving the posh life of foster living. Born approximately early July 2014, Huck is a lover boy that is friends to all (human friends and four-legged friends). Huck is a Shepherd-Lab mix that currently weighs 30 pounds. He is gaining much needed weight as he learns that meals are served to him twice a day in his foster home. Huck would love to meet you, show you his newly learned sit and will wiggle his way into your heart.

Sylvia.

Billy Jo

Born on 7/1/14, this teenager will win many hearts. Sylvia was born in a litter with three brothers so she’s a rough and tumble kind of girl. True to her color of orange, she is as sweet as they come. Sylvia has been spayed and is up-to-date on shots as well as Leukemia negative. She spends her days playing with her playmates at the adoption center or laying in the sun. She LOVES her daily kitty treats and finding lap to crawl into.

was found wandering a busy street in Greensboro both hungry and tired. She looked for her home for a few weeks and no one seemed to be looking for her. Lucky for Billie Jo, she was found by an Animal Rescue volunteer who is fostering this sweet little girl who absolutely loves life! Her goal is to please and being deaf, doesn’t slow her down. She’s approximately 1 year of age, spayed, up-to-date on shots and heartworm negative. Billie Jo is fully crate-trained, house-trained, and playtrained! She’s looking for a furever home. Are you looking for her?

Matilda.

PeekA-Boo says our little Gussie. Born in November 2014 Gussie is still ALL kitten. She is playful, smart, and oh too funny! Gussie was found on the side of the road by a kind hearted citizen, rescued, and brought to ARFP! Gussie is awaiting her forever family to find her at our adoption center where she resides. Spayed, vaccinated, and tested for feline diseases, our little Gussie is sure to make someone a perfect companion!

Born on 8/20/14 Matilda is our resident tabby. Not only is she a beauty, she has a wonderful personality to go with her attractive looks. Matilda loves other cats and is always up for a game of chase. She is very affectionate and loves to curl up next to you for the evening. Matilda is spayed and up-to-date on shots. She is also negative for feline diseases.

RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com

Maxx came to us when his owners found out they could no longer keep him. He is a “mama’s boy.” He loves to cuddle and snuggle in your lap. He will warn you when folks come to the door and in typical little dog fashion protect you from all the evils in the world. He likes other people but is a little shy with strangers. He does fine with dogs and cats as long as they understand he wants plenty of human attention. Maxx is up-to-date on vaccines, neutered and microchipped. If you are interested in adopting Maxx, please fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Maestro

came to us with two littermates. This musical trio is definitely not flat and incredibly sharp! They are learning their basic kitty manners so they can perform for company. They cause very little trouble and are not very fortissimo (loud). They will be ready to go to their new home about mid-June once they have been vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/ neutered. In the meantime, they are practicing their solos in order to show off their individual talents. Perhaps you can catch their next performance at one of our upcoming adoption events. This trio is sure to delight any family. If you are interested in giving one or more of these singers a permanent stage, please start by filling out the application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Rocky

Cajun. The word Cajun makes us think of spicy or sassy but this is NOT this girl’s personality at all. In fact, her nature is the complete opposite. So we like to think that Cajun is just a nice description for her coat pattern or attitude for finding the spice in life. Cajun loves to get petted and runs to greet anyone that comes to visit her. She is curious about toys but not overly playful. She likes to be where you are when you are home but doesn’t have to necessarily be touching you. For as social as she is, she is still pretty quiet. Cajun is up-to-date on vaccines, spayed, and microchipped. She is ready to spice up your life today! If you are interested in adopting Cajun, please start by filling out an application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Luna

and her guinea pig friend, Celeste, came to RDF when their owners realized they could no longer keep them. These two girls are very sweet and social. They don’t appear to be big talkers. They also don’t seem to mind the other animals, people, or dogs that they have seen at the office, in their foster home and at an adoption event. Luna and Celeste do seem to be a bonded pair so we would love to adopt them together. If you are interested in adopting them, please start by filling out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Geronimo

came to us when his owners no longer wanted him. They claimed that he was mean, but that was because he was an intact male goat and was kept alone with no herd mates. He has now been castrated and vaccinated and is sharing a pasture with other goats and potbellied pigs. His foster dad reports that he is very sweet with all of them and with children. Rocky needs a home with other goats to play with.

came to us when his previous owner could no longer care for him. He was a stallion until recently, when we had him gelded. He is only three and was alone in a small dirt lot, so we are slowly giving access to grass for short periods. You should have seen him kick up his heels when we first turned him out! He is currently in training with Cheryl Bell and is doing great! He is very confident and likes people very much, he just needs to learn about the concept of personal space. What a cutie!!

If you are interested in giving Rocky a home and some new friends, please fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Meet Bam. If those beautiful eyes don’t draw you in then his stellar personality will. He is full of love and affection! Bam was surrendered when a new member of his household was allergic to cats. Bam is now here awaiting his second chance at a fur-ever home. He gets along beautifully with other kitties. Chablis

is such a sweetheart! He always wants to be near you. He loves to be held and cuddled. Chablis is about 2 years old and gets along splendidly with other cats. He was surrendered to us as a stray. Chablis now waits at the SPCA for the purrfect fur-ever family that he deserves. If you’re in the market for a friendly, snuggly, social feline then you must meet this sweet boy! Libby

Snowy white with beautiful green eyes... that’s Portia! She loves to be petted, brushed, and pampered like the beautiful snow princess that she is. When she’s not getting her beauty rest in, she can be found at the top of her watch tower (a.k.a. the cat tree) looking out over all of her human pets. Portia needs a fur-ever purr-son to call her own. Are you her knight in shining armor?

is named after the fearless leader Libby Scandale of Project B.A.R.K. who rescued her . Her life had been close to wretched. She was chained all of her life and not fed or watered regularly. Her skin was manged and her teats dangling from litters of puppies. Her owner miraculously agreed for us to find this dog a better life. She is now chain-free and happy as can be! Libby is sweet, gentle, playful, and intelligent. She gets along perfectly with other dogs and is medium sized. Thank you Libby and the Project B.A.R.K. crew for entrusting this sweet baby to our care.

Mario

Eagle.

is cute, spunky, and ready to be your family’s fur-ever canine! He and his brother Luigi were found aimlessly wandering around in the cold just down the road from our adoption center. He appears to be a medium sized Rat Terrier mix and we estimate him to be around 6 months old. Mario is very playful and active... and supremely handsome! Mario is also very intelligent and a fast learner when it comes to obedience training!

What a handsome goober! Eagle is an American Bulldog in need of a fur-ever home. He is a big, bulky ball of love. He’s very playful and loves to run around. Eagle seems to have been pretty well trained as he is very obedient and well-mannered. He is a large dog (weighing in around 95 lbs!) that would require a fenced-in yard for playtime and exercise. He can be picky about dogs so we would like to adopt him out to a family without any other animals. Eagle walks splendidly on a leash and loves kids and humans of all shapes and sizes!

is a one-year old male Beagle who was surrendered to a rural NC animal shelter by his owner because she “had too many dogs”. Upon arriving to the rescue, Jesse was brought up-to-date on all of his shots and was also recently neutered. Jesse weighs 18 lbs. and loves playing with the other dogs in rescue. He is quiet, mild-mannered and friendly. Jesse is crate-trained but will need to be leash-trained. He is a smart dog and will quickly figure out being house-trained so long as his new owners utilize a crate and establish a routine. Prior to being rescued, Jesse lived outside all of his life.

Jesse’s adoption fee is $350 with an additional charge of $10.99 to register his microchip. To give Jesse a great home, contact Robin at 336-4141373 or Robin@insightrecruiters.com. n

Training Your Pet

Rapport, Routine, Retrieve: Family Dog Training Concepts

By: Carolina Air Canine LLC

Training the pet dog to live in harmony with the human family is as simple as remembering the three R’s - training Rapport, daily Routine, and teaching the Retrieve ensures Fido fits right in with his human pack.

Rapport Good training rapport means a harmonious mutual understanding between trainer and dog. This training rapport evolves after the trainer can read and understand his canine’s behavior and temperament. Our pet dogs are willing companions for us all, who will perform any command we ask of them once we figure out how to communicate our intentions. Fido understands who the alpha of the ‘family pack’ is by obedience training and leadership exercises. These exercises help avoid bad behavior before it starts by communicating leadership to your pet. One leadership exercise to try is attaching your canine to your belt buckle for an hour a day. The idea displayed to Fido during this exercise is, ‘Where the alpha leads I must follow!’ Make your pet dog work for praise and ‘sit’ before petting. Exercises like these will keep Fido in working order and create a good rapport with the family pack. Daily obedience is essential for good training rapport and ensures a working harmony between human and canine.

Routine Involving Fido in your daily life and work routine creates a happy lifestyle for your dog. Keep canine activities routine, such as daily walks and obedience. Adjust your canine’s food and water schedule around your work routine. This helps new puppies with housebreaking and keeps the trained dog’s digestive system on schedule. All pet dogs experience separation anxiety when we leave to go to work, shopping, etc. These feelings can be eased by routine separation. Leaving your pet dog and returning to him on schedule helps Fido understand the pack will return. Pet dogs on a good lifestyle routine will sleep when the alpha is away, saving energy for work and play when alpha returns home. A happy canine can release this stored energy through daily activities (walks, working obedience, and constructive playtime). Unacceptable canine behavior, such as destructive chewing, can be a direct result of a routine change or no daily routine at all. Reward your canine with a special chew bone or toy when you leave and exercise him when you come home to keep anxiety levels low. Following a daily routine will help make Rover’s life away from the family pack easier to handle.

Retrieve Training Fido to retrieve supports the canine’s working ability to bring any object after commanded to do so. When your dog is retrieving for you, a working order is developed. Some canines retrieve instinctively, while others take a little coaching. Use a long lead (30’) and a special retrieving toy to introduce the command. After you throw the object use the long lead to help Fido complete the retrieve. Reward Fido with an immediate toss after he drops the toy. Try to focus your canine’s mind on the pursuit of the object, make retrieving tantalizingly fun for all! Once your canine can retrieve fairly well challenge him even more. Make him ‘stay’ after the toy is tossed, retrieving it only on your command. In obedience competitions the canine must complete a retrieving exercise. This exercise requires the canine to jump a hurdle and retrieve a dumbbell. The dog must jump back over the hurdle and return the dumbbell to its master for points. Assistance dogs for the handicapped are required to retrieve anything asked of them and then place the object in the hands of its master. Training the retrieve has many applications, and it teaches your dog to work for you. Training your pet dog to live in harmony with the family pack starts with understanding your canine’s behavior and developing a true relationship through simple obedience and games. Create a training rapport using leadership exercises. Keep Fido on a daily routine to ease anxiety. Teach retrieving exercises to make your dog work for you. Be patient and remember the three R’s. This will help you develop the total canine and the perfect family companion. Lola came to us originally in 2003 after being chained out in a dirt yard on a logging chain, 20 lbs. underweight. Despite this, her enthusiasm and optimism were undimmed, and she eagerly adapted to her new home after being with us briefly. She has been in that loving home ever Doberman Rescue of the Triad since and has lived a happy, full, much-loved life. Her owner must now go into assisted living. She has kept Lola right up until the last minute but can do so no longer. Through no fault of her own Lola is homeless. Though Lola is 13 years old, she still loves to play and she obeys several commands including sit, stay, and “get in bed.” She is perfect on a leash but needs to go to a cat-free home. Make an appointment to meet Lola after your application has been approved. Visit www.doberman-rescue.com for information. n Mature beyond her entire one year, Simone exudes class, elegance and sensibility. From the red carpet to afternoon tea at home, this lovely lady knows how to carry herself and make everyone feel at ease. She’s a kind soul with a big heart and is looking for the same in her forever home.

Sarge has a tough name but he is hardly tough. In fact, Sarge gets rather upset when he’s not with you (which causes him to whine and bark). He and his former owner were joined at the hip, but his owner passed away and Sarge is missing him terribly. He would do best in a home where someone is home often. He’s 6 years old and in excellent health. Patience is required as he adjusts to his new situation. Interested? Boston Terrier Rescue of NC

Celebrating Fathers

The Best Teachers I Ever Had by James Colasanti Jr.

...A

difficult pregnancy...a unique baby shower gift...a memory lasting forever... Sometimes when a loving gift comes into your life, it changes everything—your education, your emotions, and your thoughts. And sometimes that gift arrives before you are even born. “She is the best baby shower gift ever,” said my father, James Sr., as the squirming terrier-hound puppy mix wriggled in his big, calloused Italian hands. He held the black, tan, and white ball of fur firmly but as gently as if he were holding a fine Waterford Crystal vase. Each felt each other’s warmth and within minutes the puppy was quieted, feeling secure in his strong hands. My father knew that their bond together had already begun. And although she was to be my dog, there was a very special allegiance between this dog and my father that had begun that very day. “I think I would like to call her ‘Butchy,’” he said, “she is just too feisty to have a girl dog’s name. And I do think she will make a great companion for our son, James Jr.” A close family friend who knew that every boy needed a dog to be at his side while growing up had provided the extraordinary gift. My mother, Mary, eight months pregnant nodded in agreement. She knew my father would be taking care of the puppy so naming her came with the responsibility. And besides the doctor had ordered her confined to bed for the last month of a very difficult pregnancy. She was 39 years old during the pregnancy and it had been a very rough eight months. The doctor knew that everything should turn out okay as long as she followed orders and got plenty of bed rest. And it did. Often, my parents would put Butchy in my cradle with me to keep me warm and to alert them if I needed food or changing. As my puppy protector and my babysitter, she instinctively did a good job. She held me up while I was learning to walk. She was there beside me when I soloed on my first two-wheeler. She lived to be at my side. When I was older my father would say to me, “James, just listen to your old man (he was actually 50 years old on the day I was born). It is always your first dog who teaches you the most. It is this dog who leaves an indelible imprint on your life and most importantly in your heart.” Life was a shared experience with this dog who had more to give than she ever expected in return. And she protected us with due diligence, never shirking from this responsibility. I can remember the sun beating down hard on us that July of 1957, dappling the pathway with light and dark patches as white cumulus clouds passed silently overhead. My father, Butchy, and I had retreated from the comforts of our city home, along with my mother, to visit our cabin in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. My father was going to weed the two-acre cornfield that surrounded the perimeter of our property with our small green tractor while Butchy and I fished in the nearby creek on the other side of

44

June 2015 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

the pasture. We were sitting on the large rock outcropping that hung over the deepest part of the creek skipping rocks. Suddenly Butchy sat up and barked. “What is it girl?” I asked looking at her. Butchy turned her head to the far cornfield and then looked back at me and barked again. And then she continued barking. I wrestled to stand upright on the large rock and Butchy grabbed my wrist in her mouth - a move she always did when she wanted me to follow her. Butchy bolted towards the pasture racing ahead of me but never losing me from her sight. Having dropped my fishing gear on the rock, I too ran as fast as I could. As we approached the other side of the cornfield where my father was weeding, we saw the bright green tractor on its side with the big black rear tire spinning spatially as if in slow motion. My father’s left leg was pinned beneath the other rear wheel tire and he could not move. “Butchy,” I shouted, “stay with Dad. Lie down next to him.” She did so and began licking his face to keep his attention on her. I ran the half-mile to our neighbor’s farm. He returned with me and together we lifted up the tractor while I tugged my father from underneath its confines. We spent the night in the mountains resting up for the trip home. We never told my mother the story. It was always our little secret -between us three guys and the little girl with four paws. It was one of the few secrets my father ever kept from my mother. One cold, bleak rainy morning in 1965 Butchy would teach me the hardest thing about love -- that it sometimes means saying goodbye. My father who always arose much earlier than the rest of the family to feed the animals was looking out the kitchen window as he drank his fourth cup of coffee. Butchy’s full food dish sat openly on the Formica counter. My father turned to me trying to hide his wet eyes. It was the only time in my life that I had ever seen him shed a tear. Today was different. He too had lost a friend. He quietly said to me, “If you want go out and say goodbye to Butchy before I bury her in the back garden underneath the pear trees (this was her favorite spot to bury her bones) she’s in her dog house.” Butchy had died during the night. The tears plummeted down my face, tearing small bits from my heart as they fell. Bits of love so

ingrained in me over the years fell with them. I had to say “goodbye” but I could only do so in my own special way. Knowing that the attic was the closest place to heaven I could get, I ran up the two flights of steps. Staring out the fog-covered attic window and looking upward to heaven, I whispered to my best friend, “Goodbye, Butchy.” And so that little ball of fur...that mutt...who was my first best friend...and my father...became two of the best teachers I would ever have. About the author. . .James Colasanti has been nominated five times by the Dog Writers Association of America and has received four Maxwell Medallions given for excellence in writing. A past president of the Animal Rescue & Foster Program of Greensboro, NC., James shares his home with his housemate, Sam, and seven rescue dogs. He is a lead clerk with Barnes & Noble Booksellers. His stories have appeared in Cesar”s Way; New York Dog; O’Henry Magazine; Triad Happy Tails; and many others.

Spotlight on Best 4K9

BEST FOR CANINE And Feline Too!

C

ash and Finley, the official store greeters at Best 4K9, have a special knack for making friends. Many times you will find them sitting at the front door, waiting to greet the next person who comes walking in. All they want is a pat on the head, no purchase necessary. So, where can you meet Cash and Finley? At Best 4K9, in Northwest Greensboro, at the corner of North Church Street and Highway 150, in the Gunter’s Crossing Shopping Center (beside Lowe’s Foods). We were there recently to interview Best 4K9 owner, Phil Ray, and of course, Cash and Finley. THT: Tell us a little about Best 4K9. B4K9: My wife, Mariela, and I opened Best 4K9 in September of 2014. Our store is a family-owned business with a huge passion for the health and well-being of our pets. Our store is small, which allows us to “get behind” the brands we carry. More is just more, not necessarily better. We focus on selection rather than quantity. If I go to a store that sells 80 brands, how does the store get behind those brands? How do you get passionate about 80 brands? I carry approximately seven or eight brands of pet food and can get passionately behind each one because the foods fit different needs and profiles. I know the purpose of the different brands and which ones to recommend. When people come in looking to buy pet food, I ask, “Is your pet’s food performing like it should?” Many have never really thought about the relationship between their dog’s food and their dog’s dry skin, obsessive licking or hot spots. We educate our clients about the ingredients and value of high end foods and encourage them to try changing their pet’s food to see if it helps to eliminate some of the problems. THT: How did you pick the name Best 4K9?

High performance pet food

46

B4K9: Before moving to Greensboro, we owned a store in Miami for 15 years called Pet’s Best. We focused on the

June 2015 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

Best 4K9 Store Greeters, Cash and Finley “Best of Everything Dog”, and wanted to use the same kind of concept here. We are very selective about the products we carry, selling only the “best 4K9”, and wanted to keep the name simple and to the point. THT: Do you sell cat food and products? B4K9: Yes, we cater to cats too! Best 4K9 carries high end cat food with high quality meats and grain-free ingredients. We also sell high quality cat litter, not the clay litter you commonly see. When cats scratch clay litter, it creates a dust which is inhaled in the cat’s respiratory system. It goes in the mucous membranes, then gets sticky and gluey, which is why clay is good for pottery, not cats. I carry pine and corn litter because they do not get gummy. THT: What products do you offer? B4K9: We carry dog and cat foods (including raw frozen), treats, toys, collars, leashes, beds, bowls, litter, litter boxes, pretty much anything you need for your pet, just a limited selection, because we pick the best. We stick true to form on ingredients and quality rather than “mass selection”. We do not bring items in just to sell. Everything we choose has to fit in the model, we are very picky. Even with toys and treats. THT: Why did you pick this area? B4K9: We live in this area and like the community. We saw there was a new elementary, middle and high school, representing growth and infrastructure. A high end pet store was lacking in this community, the closest one is nine miles away. THT: What makes your store unique? B4K9: We are able to engage with most every customer that comes in. Everyone on our staff is approachable and engageable, and has a good knowledge of the products we sell. If they did not have the knowledge before working here, they gained it through training. We spend time with our clients, yet we are not hard sellers. We are educators. We like to learn about our clients’ needs and give a lot of samples out, using the philosophy that we are going to put your pet on a food that works for your pet. We are focused on nutrition and want to be your pet’s “nutrition” store. Kind of like the “GNC” of the pet industry.

THT: Are pets welcome? B4K9: Yes, we even promote it. We like to see the dogs. That way we can see dull coats, dull eyes, dirty ears, etc., and make recommendations, without being a vet, of course. We take a very strong interest in the pet. Many people will bring their new pets here before ever taking them home. We can set them up with everything they will need. THT: Do they bring their dogs by just to see Cash and Finley? B4K9: Yes, they do. People come just to see Cash. One of our employees here, Kelly, is a trainer and brings her clients’ dogs in here to socialize with Cash and interact with customers. Kelly has six dogs, in addition to two foster dogs. She feeds her dogs a raw diet and is very knowledgeable about raw foods. THT: What are the benefits of raw food? B4K9 (Kelly): Overall, it is easier for your dog’s body to digest and is very supportive to the immune system. There is much less waste going out because there are no fillers, additives and binders going in. Your dog’s body uses practically every bit of nutrition that is in the raw. THT: Any future plans in the works? B4K9: Our plans include a future hiking club for our customers and their dogs, promoting exercise and socialization. We want to take your pet’s well-being a step further. THT: Tell us about your pets. B4K9: Cash and Finley are both rescues. Cash was found at a construction site when he was six or seven weeks old. We have had him for a couple of years and he has brought so much joy into our lives. Earlier this year, we lost our two beloved senior dogs, Rusty and Daisy, both rescues, so we now have a new four-legged family member, Finley, who is also a rescue. We just adopted him three weeks ago. THT: Do people come by just to see Cash and Finley? B4K9: People will open the door every day and ask if Cash is here, some come by exclusively to give Cash love (and now, Finley too). And the kids come by all the time with their moms and ask if Cash is here. People love Cash, he’s is a rock star! THT: Does he have a twitter account? B4K9: No, but he is thinking about starting his own Facebook page. We recently bought him a side car to ride alongside my motorcycle. Hence the nickname, Sidecar Cash. I bought the side car because I love to take Cash everywhere. And, I love riding my motorcycle, so now he can come along. He is strapped in, safe in the side car, and starts to bark and howl every time we take off because he is so excited!

Best 4K9 Owner, Phil Ray, with Cash and Finley THT: What would you like for people to know about your business? B4K9: We care about nutrition. We care about what we sell. We spend time with our customers and are passionate about what we do. We do not sell dog houses, tie outs, long chains and tethers because we do not believe in it. We are all about promoting safety. If you sell it, you promote it. Therefore, we do not sell products we do not believe in using. If dogs could drive and read, they would definitely come shop here because they would like what they see. THT: What about social media? B4K9: We are on Facebook and are currently redoing our website. THT: I saw this statement on your website: “Our pets are a big part of our lives, but for them we are their whole life.” We love this statement! B4K9: My wife, Mariela, came up with that. We are so passionate about pets. We love what we do.

Saving Sharks

By Erica Brown Greensboro Science Center Marketing Manager

T

he ocean is a magical realm filled with intoxicating beauty and awe-inspiring diversity. From simple yet beautiful glowing phytoplankton to visually stunning yet highly venomous fishes and anemones, life in the ocean is theatrical and thrilling… but also threatened. At the Greensboro Science Center, a 90,000-gallon Caribbean reef community featuring approximately 300 animals tells the story of a number of oceanic inhabitants. But the species that stand out most are the sharks. With muscular, streamlined bodies and powerful jaws, these apex predators are among the most feared aquatic animals in the world. It’s hard to imagine that these formidable predators could be at risk for extinction, but years of overfishing, finning and pollution have taken their toll, seriously threatening their survival. Last month, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) announced a brand new initiative designed to harness the collective expertise of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums like the Greensboro Science Center to save endangered species in the wild. The program, called SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction), is focusing on 10 species during its inaugural year. Listed among these 10 species are sharks and rays. Just how are institutions saving animals like sharks and rays from extinction? In addition to their daily tasks, many AZA professionals are also researchers, sharing data from animals within their collections, identifying problems the species might encounter, and developing solutions that can sometimes be utilized in the wild. AZA institutions are also devoted to conservation, making monetary donations to programs all around the world that are helping to save wildlife. For example, in support of sharks and other oceanic occupants, the Greensboro Science Center has made donations to Oceana, an organization devoted to protecting the world’s oceans. But perhaps the most influential way AZA-accredited institutions can save species is by spreading awareness about issues animals face and instilling a passion among visitors strong enough to encourage them to take action. When it comes to sharks and rays, this is where the Greensboro Science Center hopes to make its biggest impact. At the Center’s Shark Reef and Hands on Harbor exhibits, visitors can gain an understanding of and appreciation for several species of sharks

Brown banded bamboo sharks residing in Hands on Harbor. and rays. Shark Reef is home to three species of shark, blacktip sharks, blacknose sharks, and sandbar sharks, and three species of rays, cownose rays, southern stingrays, and a spotted eagle ray. Hands on Harbor is home to two species of bamboo sharks, two species of rays, and a skate. Watching the peaceful beauty of these majestic creatures in action and learning about the challenges they face in the wild often makes a huge impact on visitors, empowering them with the information and drive they need to take action individually. And there are many things individuals can do to help save threatened and endangered aquatic animals. For example, every aquatic species relies on a clean environment to thrive. Keeping coastal habitats clean is a simple way everyone can help save these animals from extinction. Sharks and rays can get tangled in debris or sickened by chemicals that make their way to the ocean from local runoff. Appropriately disposing of litter and waste is a huge help to these delicate environments. Supporting AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums through visitation, membership and donations is another way people can help save species. Money received from these actions enables AZA professionals to continue their work researching, studying, and educating. Additionally, the spark of curiosity instilled in visitors as they explore endangered animals from around the world can often ignite a further desire to help. This desire can often become infectious, spreading to friends and families. This continuous circle of compassion for creatures is what will truly make a difference in saving animals from extinction.

Jessie currently needs a stay at home Mom because she cries to be with her humans. But, she is perfectly content lying at their feet. You can search all over and never find another as sweet and loving as Jessie. She currently has an ear infection and gets drops in her ears twice a day with regular cleaning. Jessie is good with kids, other dogs, is house-trained and Pug Rescue of NC up-to-date on vaccines. All she needs to complete her life is a loving family!

Rin came to GSRA from the SPCA of Charleston, SC. She had been picked up as a stray and her time was up. We don’t know her history, but we do know she doesn’t like to be alone and loud voices scare her. This girl is house-trained, crate-trained, good in the car, and does well with dogs and older kids, but no cats. Rin loves swimming, playing ball and chew toys. A low key home with an animal companion or a human home most of the time would be ideal for this beautiful girl. German Shepherd Rescue & Adoptions

TB’s Swift River, or Swifty, is such a handsome boy. He gives kisses when he is excited and is very friendly. He is only 4-½ years old and can learn to live amicably with cats. The favorite of some of the human volunteers, he gets extra play time and plenty of attention. But after a long racing career, he really would love to have a forever home and a family of his own. Won’t you give this big, gorgeous guy a chance?

For more information, call Blanche Fedor at 336-601-7810, or email greytvolunteer@earthlink.net or visit the Greyhound Friends of North Carolina website, www.greyhoundfriends.com. n

Cheyenne is a 9 week old female kitten who is up-to-date on all of her appropriate vaccinations. She has a clean bill of health, as do her 5 siblings.
