special features… 18 Ten Reasons NOT to Buy an Easter Bunny! 46 Interpreting Pet Food Labels
Easter is drawing near and spring is just around the corner. Puppy and kitten season will be upon us, unfortunately meaning more animals surrendered to the shelters and rescues. People still buy rabbits and other animals for gifts at this time of year. An animal is NOT disposable, think twice…no three times before giving or buying a new pet. Please adopt instead and make sure you know all the facts before adding/giving a new pet. Be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem.

Vet’s Corner Christine E. Hunt, DVM Dr. Christine E. Hunt received her B.S. in Zoology from North Carolina State University, cum laude, followed by her veterinary doctorate from Oklahoma State University. She has practiced small animal medicine, dentistry and surgery in Greensboro for 33 years. In 2003, she opened University Animal Hospital. Her interests lie in advanced and novel pain management techniques, internal medicine, dermatology and comprehensive dentistry.
What does the term ‘Regenerative Medicine’ mean? ‘Regenerative Medicine’ refers to Adult Stem Cell Therapy
Can any patient receive Stem Cell Therapy?
This is a highly effective technique which uses a patient’s own fat tissue as a concentrated source of stem cells. Whenever there is an injury, the body activates and mobilizes stem cells to migrate to the injured tissue. Once on site, these cells differentiate into healthy cells which replace the injured ones and the regenerative healing process begins. Tissues that have a poor or low stem cell response don’t heal properly. Instead of new healthy tissue, the body responds abnormally with the production of scar tissue, chronic inflammatory disease, osteoarthritis, immune mediated disease, neuromuscular disease or systemic organ dysfunction, depending on the location and cause of the injury. Stem Cell Therapy sends a highly concentrated amount of cells directly into the injured tissue which dramatically inhibits inflammation and accelerates healing. Currently, Stem Cell Therapy is an approved treatment for degenerative arthritis, immune mediated polyarthritis and soft tissue injuries to muscles, ligaments, tendons and cartilage. It has also been successfully used in the compassionate treatment of Lyme’s induced acute kidney failure, immune mediated feline stomatitis, inflammatory bowel disease and traumatic spinal disease.
Before Stem Cell Therapy can be approved, all patients must have prescreening for parasites, infectious diseases, tick borne diseases and pre-anesthetic organ function. Comprehensive diagnostic x-rays are needed to determine all areas of musculoskeletal injuries and to determine whether undiagnosed cancer is present. For maximum efficacy, any infectious or parasitic disease will be treated prior to Stem Cell Treatment. Animals on steroids must be weaned off prior to therapy. Cancer patients must be 12 months cancer-free (not remission) prior to Stem Cell Therapy and they cannot receive any intravenous stem cells.
Our client reports have included these comments: “Miraculous,” “My dog is playing again” and “I never thought she would be able to go upstairs again.”
Where and how are the stem cells recovered and processed? University Animal Hospital of Greensboro, LLC, has the Medivet America equipment which enables same day, in-house stem cell processing, activation and stem cell treatment. Independent studies at the University of Kentucky have shown that this process yields an extremely high concentration of viable stem cells. The process requires 20 to 40 grams of fat tissue which is surgically removed from the abdomen or behind the shoulder of the anesthetized patient. We get a higher yield of fat from the abdomen, especially for smaller patients, so that is our preferred site. The stem cells are concentrated and activated using our specialized equipment. Affected joints, muscles and other diseased musculoskeletal tissues are injected on the same day as the surgery. An intravenous dose is also administered for systemic rejuvenation of other organs or areas of inflammation. Most clients have a portion of their pet’s stem cells cryo-banked for future needs. Clinical response is typically seen within the first week of therapy. Most of our patients only need occasional pain management or are completely off medications after their treatment. To see before and after results, please go online and visit our website at www.DrChristineHunt.com. Please call us for more information about our unique, cutting edge technology that can rejuvenate and improve your pet’s quality of life.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Forsyth County Animal Control’s Special Programs by Chad Miller, Forsyth County Animal Control
S
We don’t have a yellow brick road, but we do have a great facility, new sidewalk, and enough caring professionals and volunteers to help over a thousand pets in our community this year through our Rabies & Spay/Neuter Clinics
uch a sweet sweet sound! The jingle of the tags on your pets’ collars are music to Forsyth County Animal Control’s (FCAC) ears. Of course to some, silence is golden. Thank goodness for tag covers! Did you know that Forsyth County law requires that all dogs and cats have two tags displayed on their collar at all times while outdoors? One for rabies and one for an annual animal license that only the County can provide. For those of you that do not have microchipped pets, the tags are instrumental in helping to return lost animals home quickly. If good fences make good neighbors, then good leashes and tags make even better neighborhoods! This time of year brings us closer to spring and that means it’s time for the start of our Forsyth County Rabies Clinic & Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Voucher events (see chart below). These annual events are provided through the Forsyth Spay/ Neuter Coalition and continue to increase our goal to have all pets in Forsyth County current on their rabies vaccination and fewer animals needing shelter and care at the Animal Shelter. Please mark your calendars for March 5th from 9:00-11:00 am and March 23rd from 5:30-7:30 pm. For only $5 per animal, residents of Forsyth County can get their dogs, cats, and ferrets vaccinated against rabies. All dogs must be leashed and cats and ferrets housed in a carrier. FCAC had FIVE 2-hour Rabies clinics in 2015 where we provided 811 rabies vaccines and 482 Spay/Neuter vouchers to low income households! We are looking forward to another great series of events this year and can’t wait to meet even more of your great pets! We don’t have a yellow brick road, but we do have a great facility, new sidewalk,
and enough caring professionals and volunteers to help over a thousand pets in our community this year! Rabies vaccination, tag, and certificate is provided. $10 Spay/Neuter Vouchers will also be available to low income residents of Forsyth County. Please see our website for more additional details on our upcoming clinics as well as pet licensing requirements in Forsyth County. (forsyth.cc/AnimalControl) Project Pearl continues to have a tremendous impact on FCAC. Five years ago they started to bring out the best of our facility when they created the Lend-a-Lens program. Thanks to Project Pearl our available adoptable animals are now given a makeover that starts with a bath and grooming by volunteers, and then getting all dressed up for a photo shoot with local professional photographers. Our animals enjoy their fame and get adopted faster than ever before! They have also helped hundreds of animals get a second chance through their Medical Foster Care Program. If you would like to help the FCAC shelter animals, please consider a tax deductible charitable donation to Project Pearl this year. All donations to the Project Pearl non-profit are dedicated to assisting the animals in need at the FCAS. (Projectpearlnc.org) FCAC does a lot more than just adopt out great animals and put on rabies clinics. We reach directly into our community with our Special Programs that include Animeals, Houses for Hounds, Stay Together, Community Care, Safe Haven, Almost Home, F.A.I.R., L.E.A.F., C.A.N.V.A.S, C.A.R.T., and Enhanced Patrol. Our website has detailed information on all of our programs. No pet should go hungry or not have adequate shelter that protects them from the elements. Our Animeals program provides free do-

nated pet food and Houses for Hounds provides free dog houses to qualifying low income residents in Forsyth County. To help ensure forever homes, the Stay Together team offers a Dog and Cat Help Team to assist with pet behavior issues. The Community Care Program involves over 40 animal care organizations that have partnered with our facility to secure animal transfers. Last year with C.A.R.T. (County Animal Response Team) we successfully participated in a county-wide mock disaster event to ensure that we are prepared to care for our community’s pets. Besides having a disaster kit for yourself, your pet should have one too. We are prepared for our community. Are you prepared for your pet? You can make a difference! Each month FCAC has Volunteer Orientations that include a tour and details on how to become a part of the FCAC Team as a host, animal care provider, or numerous other opportunities like helping a homeless animal find a new home or joining Hiking Hounds! You can be a part of a dedicated team of like-minded individuals who strive to make the world a better place for animals and people alike. Each year, hundreds of our neighbors donate their time to help the homeless animals at
our shelter. We encourage you to stop by and discuss how you can help make a difference! Orientations for volunteers age 16 and older are held the 1st Saturday and 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Animal Shelter. Orientation begins promptly at 3 pm Saturday or 6 pm Tuesday and lasts approximately one hour. It is the first step to volunteering with us and we can’t wait to meet you! Check the Calendar of Events on our website for additional information. We also accept donations such as blankets, towels and washable toys. Too young to volunteer? Many local school kids have been having fun creating donation drives to aid the animals, and some have even asked for donatable items instead of presents on their birthdays. You can make a difference too. See you soon!

DENTAL DISEASE
The good, the bad and the preventable... We have heard from a very young age to brush our teeth. People spend much time and incur considerable expense at the dentist. The recommendation is that people go to the dentist and have a full dental examination and teeth cleaning twice yearly. If you have ever had any dental problems, you know that mouth pain is horrible, to say the least. We have been educated that dental health is directly related to our overall health. So it shouldn’t be surprising that dental health care is important to our pets! Dental disease is a very commonly diagnosed problem in small animal veterinary medicine. Gum disease is an infection resulting from buildup of plaque on the surface of the teeth and around gums. Bacteria builds up in the plaque and causes infection in the bone holding the teeth. The infection causes deterioration of the bone which is called periodontal disease. The signs of dental disease are bad breath, bleeding, pain and loss of teeth. The bacteria in the mouth can enter the blood stream and cause damage to organs such as the kidneys, liver and heart. Dental care is best started early in puppies and kittens. A dental routine that begins when pets are young can help prevent plaque buildup and also allow pets to be trained. Preventive care Before (top photo) and After (bottom is much less costly in the photo) Dental Cleaning long term and is much
better for the health of your pet. Many times older patients present at examination with horrible dental disease at an old age and the damage is overwhelming. Patients with advanced periodontal disease will often need surgery to remove abscessed teeth. There can be an increased health risk due to age and severe infection of the mouth. Prevention is a very important part of dental health care. Tooth brushing is the gold standard for prevention of plaque and tartar buildup. The tooth brush will manually remove plaque along the gum line. Never use human toothpaste as it is not meant to be swallowed. Animal toothpaste comes in flavors such as chicken and vanilla and contains an enzyme to break down the plaque. Only the outside surface of teeth need to be brushed because the insides are kept cleaner due to saliva and the tongue. The more often the teeth are brushed, the better the results. Even brushing two to three times weekly will help prevent tartar, however, daily is better. Talk with your veterinarian about techniques to help with teeth brushing. Topical antiseptics such as rinses and wipes help decrease bacteria and help prevent gum disease. These products can be helpful, especially if used daily. Dental chews, treats and diets help reduce plaque by manual removal with chewing, and there are many products for both dogs and cats. A list of approved diets and treats is available by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (vohc. org), a group which gives a seal of approval based on scientific studies. Chew toys can also manually remove tartar with abrasion. However, be very careful with toys which can be chewed into chunks that can be a swallowing or choking hazard. Hard toys such as cow hooves, antlers and bones can break teeth which may expose roots and can lead to tooth abscesses. Your veterinarian will examine your pet’s teeth during yearly examinations and may recommend a routine teeth cleaning when needed. Teeth cleaning is done with general anesthesia to allow for proper cleaning and examination. Proper evaluation of the mouth is difficult without anesthesia. A dental scaler is used to remove tartar from the surface of teeth and below the gum line. The gingival pockets are probed and measured, and dental x-rays may be taken to evaluate tooth roots for disease. The enamel is polished to smooth the tooth surface and teeth are treated with fluoride sealer. Dental charting and notes are made of any abnormalities. Recommendations for further dental procedures such as extraction of diseased teeth and root canals will be discussed. Dental care is extremely important for our pets. Home care will help prevent problems in the future and give greater quality of life to older pets. Teeth brushing is the best way to remove plaque from the teeth and promote a healthier mouth and fresh breath!

Ten Reasons NOT To Buy An Easter Bunny! by Brittany May & Penny Ausley, Happy Days-Farm
~Here are a few things to consider prior to choosing a pet rabbit~ 1. Rabbits are not easy, starter pets. They need adult care, and it is best for them to live indoors in a climate controlled environment. Rabbits are extremely clean animals, and they can be trained to use a litter box within days. They can easily get too cold if outside in the winter, or die from heat strokes in the summer. 2. Baby rabbits grow up fast. By the time they are six months old, they are in their temperamental, hormonal teenage years. This is the point most rabbits end up in shelters. They start snapping and charging their owners. This is just hormonal behavior, and will pass after they are spayed/neutered, or when they reach the 12-18 month mark. Rabbits taken to a shelter will probably be euthanized. Please consider adopting an older rabbit if you do decide to get one. 3. Rabbits need specialized vet care that is only provided at an exotic pet clinic (check with your vet). Their health can deteriorate quickly if they get sick, and any sign of respiratory or stomach distress is an emergency. 4. Rabbits need to be spayed or neutered at a specialized clinic to protect their long-term health. This needs to be done by a specialist who has done it many times. Rabbits do not react well to anesthesia, and can easily die if the vet isn’t experienced at giving it to rabbits. 5. Most rabbits do not enjoy being cuddled and held. You must not force them, or they will never trust you. Also, if they struggle to escape, they can easily break their back. Instead, get on the floor with them, and allow them to sniff you, jump on you eventually, and get to know you on their terms. It can take several months for a rabbit to bond with a person. 18

Rabbits are should be around ten years? prey animals, and Those that do survive are generthey react that ally living in less than desirable way. If something conditions, or end up in the scares or startles shelters. Why you ask? Because them, they will run and hide. A people purchase rabbits expecting them to act one way, and rabbit does not understand that a they get upset when they do not. screaming child chasing them is only wanting a cuddle. The rabbit fears for his life, and can actually die of a heart attack. For these reasons, I do not recommend rabbits to families with small children. 7. Rabbits have specialized diets and delicate digestive tracts. Pellets are not enough. They need fresh food and timothy hay. (Fresh food meaning romaine lettuce, spring lettuce mix, vegetables, fruits, etc.) Only adopt/rescue a rabbit if you think approximately ten years is not enough time with such an amazing friend. If you aren’t sure, please just buy a stuffed animal, not a real one !
8. Hutches and cages are not enough. Rabbits need to be out of their cages as much as possible, with a bare minimum of two hours a day. They require lots of exercise and stimulation. A rabbit that is left alone will suffer greatly. They are very social animals, and can easily become depressed, and can develop arthritis from inactivity. 9. Rabbits can become destructive, i.e., chewing cords and doors, etc. They need chew toys, tunnels, boxes, etc, to help gnaw their teeth down. In the absence of this, the baseboards work just fine. Their teeth continually grow, just like their nails. 10. Rabbits are incredibly smart, loving, and entertaining pets. They don’t give their trust like a puppy, you have to earn it. Once you do, you will have the best pet ever, but don’t think this is easy. It takes time and effort on your part. You cannot force a rabbit to love you. But once a rabbit does love you, you should have a loyal friend for around ten years. Brittany May and Penny Ausley run Happy-Days-Farm in Burlington, NC. They currently have 10 hens, 6 guinea, and 3 rabbits on their backyard hobby farm. They also run a blog and several social media pages dedicated to their farm life experiences. www.happy-days-farm.com www.facebook.com/happydaysfarm www.instagram.com/happydaysfarm

handsome boy! This nearly 2 year old Lab mix loves to run and play in our yard. We love this cute boy and know he would make a wonderful family pet. Unfortunately, Buffalo Bill tested positive for heartworms, but he is receiving treatment. His fee has been waived, but his adopter must continue his treatment. Please don’t let it stand in the way of adopting him. He is a perfect size and oh so sweet!
Butterscotch is spayed, current on shots and available for $90 at Burlington Animal Services, 221 Stone Quarry Rd., Haw River or call 578-0343 for more information. Photo courtesy of Lois Dixon. n
Jada is a beautiful brindle girl with a wonderful disposition. She is about 2 years old and was surrendered due to an illness in the family. Jada is spayed, current on shots and available for $90. Come meet this awesome dog today at Burlington Animal Services, 221 Stone Quarry Rd., Haw River or call 578-0343 for more information. Judge is a 3 year old Pit Bull that came in as a stray. This guy has such a calm and kind demeanor, it’s hard to understand why no one has snatched him up! Betty White hasn’t had an easy life but she is still a sweet and loving older gal who is also very smart. She can hear fairly well, a lot better than she can see. Betty is doing well walking on a leash, allowing her foster mom to lead her around hazards. We think she would be better suited in a house with no other dogs or possibly one with another canine companion who would be content to just let her be. Does anyone have room in their heart and home for this petite senior?

Treasure House, Burlington, NC - Please adopt! Snowball
is a stunning, very unusual mix of Siamese and dilute torbie (tabby/tortoiseshell). Her big crystal blue eyes will mesmerize you. She was born in 2007 and is one of the sweetest cats we’ve ever had in the program. She’s a “greeter” cat – has to say “hello, how are you!” to anyone who walks in the door. She was surrendered to Sheets Cat Adoption Program when her owner passed away. Snowball’s blood work indicates she’s in good health, and her teeth are fine! At 14 pounds, Snowball is a cute round butterball of love. For applications, email petadoptions@sheetspetclinic.com. Adoption Fee: $75. Includes testing, spay/neuter, microchipping and registration, vaccinations. Fee refundable for 2 weeks to make sure you’ve found the right match. ADOPTION INCENTIVE: Cats adopted from Sheets Pet Clinic get half-price vaccines and discounted annual wellness for the rest of their lives! n
Joss is a short and stocky girl (60 pounds and strong!), estimated to be around 3-5 years of age. She enjoys cuddling, walks, and belly rubs galore! When she’s really happy, she lets you know by making the cutest snorts you’ve ever heard! She does well with medium sized dogs or larger, but finds smaller animals (toy breeds, cats, birds, etc.) to be a little too much for her and would do best in a home without such distractions. She is crate and housetrained. Merit Pit Bull
Email info@mpbf.org or visit mpbf.org to fill out an application for Joss. n
We believe the last weeks, days, and moments that an owner has with a pet are the most cherished times, and should be handled with dignity and love. If you think my head is big, you should see my heart! Everyone affectionately calls Felix ‘Big Head’ because he is an American Pit Bull/Mastiff mix. Felix is 3 years old and is currently recovering from knee surgery. Felix has a habit of going after cats in his foster homes so a cat free home is probably best. He is very playful and can become overexcited easily, so a home with older children would be ideal. Having a doggy brother or sister and a sturdy, fenced-in yard so he can run and play would be heaven to Felix! Adopt this sweetheart today! Frannie.
Monet.
There is nothing quite as cute as a puppy and Frannie is certainly no exception. Born on January 1st to a 25 lb. Heeler/Terrier mix, mom Frannie is as delightful as she is cute. She loves other dogs and especially loves playing with her siblings. If she is anything like her mom. Frannie will have a little bit of herding play in her. Frannie is up-to-date on her shots and will soon be spayed.
Are you ready to play? You might not be able to tell it just from looking, but I’m a world class toy catcher. Top ranked in both catching toys thrown over my head and the game of fetch, I’m getting ready to go pro! And that doesn’t even begin to cover my skills in tail-chasing. That’s a tough one, I tell you. But, if you want to be great, you have to work at it. And I work so hard that when the training day’s over, I fall asleep in the nearest lap. Those post workout massages get me every time. I’ve been training since April 2015. I don’t use performance enhancing substances, but I am current on all my vaccines and have been neutered (they say it reduces my drag coefficient).

Meet Susie.
Annie.
Mom is a 25 lb. Heeler/ Terrier mix. Dad was a traveling salesman. Baby Annie turned out CUTE! And so did her siblings. This little butterball was born underneath a house around January 1st, 2016. Renters moved out, left mom and babies, nice landlord rescued them, and called a wonderful Animal Rescue and Foster Program volunteer who took them in to foster. We are pretty sure dad was larger than mom because little Annie is a pudge ball. She’s cute! That’s all we know. You can find out how to meet Annie and her siblings by jumping over to www.facebook.com/arfpnc or call 336-574-9600. n
Hooch. This baby boy
Sister to Frannie and Annie. Born January 1st, 2016 we expect these girls to be 25-30 lbs. plus. They are hearty pups even though mom is between 20-25 lbs. Girls gotta eat! Susie is a bouncy, happy, girl who is current on her shots and will soon be spayed. She is precious, playful and personable. Drop by to meet her today!
is our Hooch! He is one of 7 precious babies that were rescued from a North Carolina shelter by the Animal Rescue and Foster Program. Watching Hooch and his siblings run through the grass frolicking is about as special as it gets, especially knowing they were living in a concrete jail on death row. Come by and meet Hooch! Hooch is a Lab/Shar Pei mix and we think there must have been a Pit Bull in the dog house too. He is 5 months old and his adoption fee is $150.

Jasper.
is a 1 year old, possibly Australian Shepherd mix, who was roaming as a stray and fed by kind neighbors for months. He is very shy but has great eye contact and is a smart and perceptive dog who is anxious to please and appreciates kindness. Andy is submissive-natured and seems to have a gentle soul, a kind dog who just never had the opportunity to be loved. He needs an experienced new owner and a fenced yard.
14 pound Jasper is a 9 month old bundle of puppy energy. He looks like a Rat Terrier mix. Jasper is super intelligent and knows all kinds of commands, which he performs in exchange for a nice treat. He is agile and quick and can learn anything! He is very playful and loves toys. Jasper is looking for an adults-only home in which the people are alpha and can offer him structure so he is not reactive when uncertain. He can be picky about his doggie friends.

Zuki. Beautiful
Marlene.
Zuki appears to be a purebred Lab. She is a smart, loving, loyal dog who wants to be with her people and is eager to please. She had a female elderly owner most of her life so she can be protective of the beloved females and children in her home and a bit fear aggressive with men, once she begins to highly value her family. This is due to inexperience so this can probably be corrected by a smart owner who will teach her that men are good and kind. Zuki is 6 years old.
Tender Marlene is a beautiful Tortoiseshell mix who is a gentle and wonderfully affectionate girl. She loves all the attention she can get. She was found as a starving stray and was still skinny when her pictures were taken. Marlene is 7 years old and was only 7 pounds when we rescued her. She will be gorgeous when she gains weight and grows back her multi-hued coat.

Pumpkin was born September of 2013. We don’t know how she wound up in a shelter pregnant and alone, but we rescued her 3 days before she gave birth to kittens. The kittens have all found homes and now it is Pumpkin’s turn! She is very sweet, loves to be petted and loves a catnip snake or mouse toy. We don’t think she’s a natural bobtail, but Tailless Cat Rescue she has the very round eyes and sweet purrsonality of one. She is very good with other cats, and seems to bond best with women. She’s been dewormed, treated for fleas, spayed, tested FeLV/FIV and heartworm negative, vaccinated, and microchipped. Daisy
This handsome happy fella came to us when his owner could no longer care for him. He is a great little fella who knows basic obedience and gets along with just about everybody. He thinks he is a little bit bigger than he really is but responds perfectly when corrected by another dog. He doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. He appears to get along with kids, cats and other dogs. Brantley is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, and microchipped. He will make a great dog for someone looking for a mature companion.
is an active puppy who is looking for someone willing to give her an outlet for her energy, such as a fenced in backyard or hiking/ long walks or a play buddy, and some guidance on continuing her manners. She is very sweet and LOVES people and kids. She is housebroken and crate-trained. Daisy is a little too much for most cats and small animals so we recommend a house with no cats or small animals, like rabbits or guinea pigs. Otherwise, she has been doing well with her obedience training. She is up-to-date on vaccines and will be spayed and microchipped soon.

Ziggy came to Red Dog Farm when his previous family was not able to keep him in their fenced yard. He is a great pig that enjoys attention. He loves to be scratched behind his ears, under his chin and especially on the belly. Ziggy is on a strict hay and pig pellet diet so he does not gain more weight. Our vet says he is at a good weight now but to be careful with his diet. His foster mom does give him the occasional peppermint for a treat and Ziggy loves them. Sulli is a 14 year old Gelding
a 10 year old Boer goat. She is a super sweet goat that has been well cared for her entire life. Carla settled right into her foster home and fit right into her new herd with no issues. Carla has been vaccinated and is a very healthy girl. Her adoption fee will be $75 due to her age.
that has been doing well with his training. He loves to be groomed. We think he’d be great for someone that wants a pet or a horse to give pony rides on. He may be good as a trail horse, but most likely only if he is traveling with a buddy. Walking is his specialty. He will bond and become dependent to any buddy he is in with. Our trainer thinks that Sulli would be happiest with an adopter who enjoys natural horsemanship, as he seems to respond well to that type of training!

Trixiee
Pappi
is a 2-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier that was dumped in the SPCA driveway. She was found in a cage with a bowl of dry food, two belts that were used as a leash and a note scrawled on a brown paper bag that only said, “little girl, little girl.” Well, this little girl is one lucky dog! Even though she was dumped, this sweetie knows she is on the road to her forever home. She is a beautiful grey-blue color and weighs about 45 lbs. She is a calm, but active girl with lots of love to give. She is very smart and would pick up training quickly. Trixiee would be best in a home where she is top dog and can get all the attention she deserves. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped.
a an adorable six-year-old Chihuahua who has had quite a road to travel. Picked up as a stray, Pappi was taken to a vet and then brought to the SPCA by his rescuers. He was found in the snow wearing a sweater and a harness and he had a microchip. His owners were located, but they were all the way in Texas and when contacted they said they didn’t want him back! Only Pappi knows how he wound up so far from his owners, and he’s not talking. We all, Pappi included, are sure it is for the best. Now Pappi can find a family who will love and care for him as the special little guy that he is. Pappi was timid and afraid but he is slowly opening up. All he needs now is that one special person who will put him first in their heart.

Rockett. At about 6 months
Sprinkle. Nicknamed
old, this little Lab/Pit mix is a typical puppy. He plays hard and he sleeps hard—good thing he has a brother to keep him busy! Rockett came to the SPCA with five siblings, including his brother, A Rod. Sadly, they all passed away except these two brothers. Rockett is a beautiful pup with a brownish tint to his black coat and white on his neck and front paws. He is looking for a home with active humans to match his spirit and keep him from getting too bored. He loves to run and is good with other dogs. His energy level is high and he is smart, playful and good-natured. If you like energy and fun, and think you can hold on for the ride of your life, then Rockett is the dog for you!
“Cowboy”, due to his cute little walk with his tail in the air, Sprinkle is sure to bring a chuckle and a smile to anyone. He is a sweet little kitty with lots of curiosity and playfulness. Sprinkle is a small, light gray and cream Tabby that appears to be around a year old. He has soft silky fur, the sweetest eyes and is such a gentle little fellow. He would be a good fit for any home and any family. Sprinkle is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. All Sprinkle wants is a home of his own, a kibble bowl just for himself and lots of soft, warm spots for naps. Come out for a visit and see if he doesn’t just try to ride off with your heart!

Cole was found as a stray and taken

in by a group of students and their teacher from East Forsyth High School. They all had such big hearts for little Cole that they brought him to the SPCA hoping he could find a better life than living on the street. True to form, Cole is adapting to his new life and working his way into the hearts of all who meet him. Not hard to do when you are a cute and sweet kitty. Loving Cole is just so easy! He seems to spread joy wherever he goes. He loves to play, gets along well with other cats and enjoys napping in the play tunnel at the center. He is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. Cole is a happy, healthy kitty who would be a great companion for anyone.
is a very special kitty who came to the SPCA with her brother, Patches, when her owners were transferred to Texas. Bella and Patches were brought to the SPCA so they could find loving families of their very own. Bella is a blind, 6-year old, orange and white kitty with a big personality. Nothing stops her from getting what she wants and what Bella wants is lots of attention. She loves to be groomed and petted and also seems to enjoy someone talking to her. She has a strong purr and is a real lap cat. This sweet girl needs a home with a relaxed environment where someone is home most of the time. She needs lots of attention and places to curl up and take warm naps. If your bed, couch and lap seem to be missing something we are pretty sure that something is Bella!

Charlee. My name is Charlee. February marked my 1-year anniversary as a Foster at Camp Bow Wow Greensboro. I don’t remember much about my life before I became a Foster Camper except that I had spent 6 months at the Guilford County Animal Shelter. My human friends don’t think I ever had a real home or if I did, I must not have experienced much love and care because I’ve had to work hard on my self-confidence during the last year. Not everyone has the same opportunity to give a great “First Impression” and I’m afraid I fall into that category. Because I’ve never had the opportunity to build a strong bond with a human, it’s hard for me to show affection or be playful with strangers. However, once I trust a human my real personality is revealed! The truth is I am such a gentle boy, so eager to please and have so much love to give! I’ve already stolen the hearts of everyone at Camp Bow Wow and for the last few months, I have been given the wonderful opportunity to live with new my best friend James Voyatzis, owner of Sitzen K9 Training. James has patiently worked with me and has taught me all the basic commands and the manners of a good dog! My selfconfidence has improved and it’s a lot easier for me to make new friends, both human and dogs! I’m housebroken and my favorite things to do are rest by my loyal trainer’s feet and show him how grateful I am for giving me a chance to be a great dog! I’m ready for a home to call my own. My friends at Camp Bow Wow will give my new family 20 Days of day care to help them adjust to a life with me in my FUR-Ever home! Feel free to contact my trainer James at Sitzen K9 Training (336-908-1467) or call Camp Bow Wow Greensboro at 336323-3133. n

Although I am shy at first, once I warm up to you, I just want to be with you and I love sleeping under Chihuahua Rescue the covers with you. Training Your Pet
CANINE GOOD CITIZEN A Dog's Test for Everyday Life
by Pat Muhammad, Carolina Dog Training Club
M
any of us who have dogs think of them as our children. Therefore, we want them to behave like obedient children and be good citizens. The American Kennel Club (AKC) must have been thinking along those lines too, since they created the title Canine Good Citizen. On January 1, 2013 this became an official title with AKC, though the program has been around since 1989. Dogs of all kinds can earn this title, as long as they have the appropriate vaccinations. In order to qualify for this title, you and your dog must complete a ten-part exam. The skills required to pass the test are things that your dog should normally do as a well-mannered dog, consisting of the following: 1) Accepting a friendly stranger - A desirable skill for everyday walks and living. 2) S itting politely for petting - Another appropriate skill for everyday living and walks around the block. 3) Appearance and grooming - Includes brushing over your dog’s back, picking up his paws and looking in his ears, such as a vet or groomer would do. 4) O ut for a walk (walking on a loose lead) - This step consists of walking your dog, adding a couple of stops and turns along the way. 5) Walking through a crowd - A helpful skill to know when walking your dog at the park or strolling through a pet store where there are several people grouped together. 6) S it and down on command, staying in place - Your dog must be able to sit and down on command, stay until you walk out 20 feet, then wait for you to return and release him from command.
44
7) Coming when called - Your dog must stay while you walk 10 feet out, then come when you call him over. 8) Reaction to another dog - Your dog must be able to stop beside another dog while you shake hands with the dog’s owner, then continue on with your dog. 9) Reaction to distraction - Someone will drop something, roll an item by your dog, and maybe jog past your dog. He should not be upset by these things, but should be confident with you there by his side. 10) Supervised separation - Your dog will be held by someone while you go out of sight for three minutes. This skill could be beneficial if you are out with a friend and need to run to your car for something you may have forgotten. As you can see, most of the test items are useful for situations you and your dog may face in everyday life. Earning the CGC is a fun way to work with your dog in many different situations. Along with completing the exam, the handler must agree to an AKC CGC responsible dog owner’s pledge which are also everyday things that we would do as a dog owner: 1) I will be responsible for my dog’s health needs. Health needs consists of food, veterinarian visits, and daily exercise. 2) I will be responsible for my dog’s safety. Your dog’s safety consists of using a leash in public, supervision of your dog, and having an ID tag for your dog. 3) I will not allow my dog to infringe on the rights of others. Infringing on the rights of others would be to not pick up your dog’s waste, allow your dog to roam the
March 2016 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
neighborhood, and allowing your dog to continuously bark. 4) I will be responsible for my dog’s quality of life. This pledge includes basic training, playtime, and attention for life. Once your dog has successfully completed the exam you will receive a form to send to the AKC, along with the appropriate fee, in order to obtain your certificate. For an additional fee, you may choose to have your CGC title recorded by the AKC. If your dog does not pass the test and needs additional help with a certain test item, it will be noted on the form, telling you which skills need more practice. Your dog can then retake the exam after practicing the indicated skill. For further information go to the AKC website at www.akc.org.
Carolina Dog Training Club offers Canine Good Citizen classes to help get you and your dog ready to take the CGC test. We suggest that you take our Beginner I class and possibly our Beginner II class before taking the CGC class. Special Feature
Interpreting Pet Food Labels Pet food labels are misleading when it comes to comparing types and brands of pet foods.
The Guaranteed Analysis reporting on pet food labels are based on what the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) calls “As Fed Basis” testing. This type of testing doesn’t take into account the water content of the product being tested. The amount of water in a food acts to dilute the results of all reported nutritional data: protein, fat and fiber.
The FDA stresses the importance of paying attention to this issue on its website, “To make meaningful comparisons of nutrient levels between a canned and dry product, they should be expressed on the same moisture basis”.[1] “Dry Matter Basis” uses a simple formula that allows us to see guaranteed analysis of multiple products on equal footing by removing all moisture. This is important to all pet owners, and is of critical importance if protein or fat needs to be controlled for medical reasons. The formula is simple and made simpler by the fact most of our cellular phones have a calculator.
Choose carefully. “Because Pets Are Family, Feed Them Like Family.” Here are the steps: 1. Determine the amount of dry matter in a product. Dry Matter is
equal to 100% minus the moisture indicated by the label. a. If the Label reads the moisture is 75% then dry matter is 100% minus 75% and equals 25%. One fourth of the product is dry matter. 2. To find the actual percentage of nutrients in the product, take the Dry Matter total (in this case 25%) and divide the percentage of the ingredient by that number and multiply by 100. So in this case, protein, fat and fiber percentages are really: a. Label reads Protein is 10% but our formula: 10 divided Zignature Zssential Fulmula (dry) Zignature Zssential Fulmula (canned) by 25 times 100 reveals the true number: 40%. abel reads Fat is 5% but truth be told: 5 divided by 25 Label Dry Matter Basis Label Dry Matter Basis b. L times 100 equals 20%. Moisture 10% -0- Moisture 78% -0 c. Label: reads Fiber is 3% so 3 divided by 25 times 100 Protein 32% 36% Protein 11% 50% equals 12%. Look at how some pet food products compare. Pedigree Fat 16% 18% Fat 5% 23% Adult Complete is the top selling dry dog food according to Fiber 5% 6% Fiber 1% 5% Supermarket News. I compared the dry and wet version of that TOTAL 60% 78% brand for nutrient content. Then I compared the wet and dry Percentages are rounded up to the nearest whole number products of a brand currently reviewed as one of the top in the industry and used by friends who prefer feeding kibble. Pedigree Adult Complete (dry) Pedigree Choice Cuts in Gravy (canned) The totals listed under Dry Matter Basis are the rounded result of utilizing the formula and thereby removing all mois Label Dry Matter Basis Label Dry Matter Basis ture from the Guaranteed Analysis reported on the product Moisture 12% -0- Moisture 82% -0labels. Now we can compare pet foods on an even playing field. As you can see from the results in our tables, Pedigree’s Protein 21% 24% Protein 8% 44% canned food has almost twice the protein of their kibble. Fat 10% 11% Fat 3% 17% Adding up our protein, fat and fiber leaves a lot of room, Fiber 4% 5% Fiber 1% 6% particularly with your dry foods. What’s left? The remaining percent left is the good, the TOTAL 40% 67% Percentages are rounded up to the nearest whole number bad and sometimes the ugly. Needed vitamins and minerals do

make up some of the volume and are critical to your pet’s health. The rest, after applying the “Dry Matter Basis” formula, is filler. The word filler shouldn’t put you in a panic, as everything we eat includes components that aren’t nutritionally important. It’s the amount of filler and its contents we care about. To determine if it’s good or bad, look at the ingredients. The FDA requires that ingredients be on the labels and that the order of ingredients be listed based on a volume, high to low. You probably don’t want a food where the label begins with ingredients that are nutritionally low in value such as grains. Grains are full of calories and little else useful to our pets (mostly filler). Be careful to look for the words you can’t pronounce as they are often man-made, or created through extensive processing. Look out for preservatives BHA and BHT. They are very common in commercial dog foods and have been linked to certain cancers and are potentially toxic. Citric Acid (also know as vitamin C and ascorbic acid) is often listed as a preservative, but is a natural ingredient that should be part of a pet’s diet, with the only potential concern being 85% of it comes from China. This method works for treats as well as for meals. Keep this in mind if you have a pet with special dietary needs. article by: Michael Rosenstock - Finest Fetch

Fancy. My foster mom calls me Miss Fancy Pants because I’m cute, funny and playful (I love to dance around when she comes home)! I’ve had a bit of a rough start but my foster mommy has taken very good care of me and I’m feeling SO MUCH better now! I had lost a lot of hair, but most of it has grown back now. I’m house-trained, crate-trained Hailey is a pretty female and good with other dogs. Not Beagle mix dog with her sure about cats, we haven’t been estimated date of birth to Humane Society of around them, but I’m small and Alamance County be in 2005. She is a sweet calm so I bet I’d be fine with them. I know basic commands, do girl and would probably very well on a leash and ride great in the car. I’m fine to lay on do best in a home with no small children. Hailey loves the couch by myself but I REALLY love to cuddle too. I like to run and chase birds, all people that I meet, especially the real little people. Maybe typical Beagle behavior! because they are closer to my level and I can love on them She is spayed, up-to-date better. I haven’t had many toys to play with until now, so I’m on vaccinations, heartworm learning how to enjoy life and have fun! I love it here with my tested, on monthly prevention foster mom and siblings but I really would like a home of my Spay Stokes and microchipped. Hailey’s a own. Chuck. We’re predicting a long and happy life together for the family fortunate enough to adopt Chuck. From what we see, 4 year old Chuck is a sweet dog with a gentle personality who apparently is very sociable. We suspect he will do well in a home Doberman Rescue of the Triad with a fenced area and sufficient play and attention from his owners. Here are a couple of comments from our volunteers: “He loves for you to just sit with him and he’s really affectionate. He gave me kisses after his bath last week. He walked well on leash going to and from the fields.” Another said, “Sweet Chuck just wanted to lean his head against me and have his ears rubbed. We sat on the floor of his kennel and he was very well behaved. He also responded well on the leash.” Chuck loves to play with other dogs and longs to be with his human and be made of. Read about Chuck at www.doberman-rescue.com. Make an appointment to meet him after your application has been approved. n
Smokey & Jackson. Meet Smokey and Jackson, 8 and 9 year old brothers who were both dropped off at a shelter to be euthanized because it was discovered that they were heartworm positive. This condition, though it can be fatal, is treatable and that’s exactly why Tarheel Weimaraner Tarheel Weimrescue Rescue has taken them in! They must first complete their treatment, but we would love to have applicants waiting for them. If you are interested in Smokey and Jackson, please apply online at www.tarheelweimrescue.org. n www.triadhappytails.com March 2016
