44 Sometimes, Your World Can Change
They’re the cutest twin kittens ever, with tons of purrsonality. They are around 12 weeks old and full of energy. Abbey and Alex tumble and play so hard they will fall asleep in the middle of a wrestling match. Little Alex is very outgoing and will give you all kinds of loving. Abbey is a bit more reserved, you have to earn her trust. But, if you do, you will have all the kitten loving you Triad Independent Cat Rescue can stand. Make these twins yours and you’ll have hours of entertainment, plus kitten cuddles too. Both are Felv, FIV, and heartworm negative, vaccinated with FVRCP, spayed and neutered.

Ticks and Your Pet It seemed like winter lasted forever this year, but spring has now finally arrived. All of us are excited to spend more time walking in the woods, playing in the park and just spending time in our back yard. Unfortunately, all of these activities increase our risk of tick exposure. There is nothing worse than finding that one of these disgusting insects, more correctly arachnids, have attached and are feeding on us or our pets. Recent data has shown that ticks are increasing in numbers. This is thought to be due to changing weather patterns, people living closer to wildlife and the increasing white-tail deer population which is a major tick host. Ticks have a complicated life cycle. A tick egg hatches into a larva, then changes to a nymph and develops into an adult tick which lays eggs and starts the cycle again. Female ticks can lay up to 6,000 eggs. This process takes about two years to complete. Depending on the species, the tick usually eats - takes a blood meal - before progressing on to the next stage. It varies with the type, but some ticks are no bigger than a freckle. Not only is thinking about a tick feeding on you or your pet gross enough, ticks can transmit some very dangerous diseases. Bacteria located inside the tick are periodically vomited out while the tick feeds. The bacteria quickly get into the blood stream where they can make us or our pets sick. Most of us have heard of the tick transmitted diseases Lyme and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis, Cytauxzoonosis (infects cats), Tularemia and tick paralysis are some of the other diseases that ticks can harbor. Depending on which tick transmitted disease a pet has, the symptoms can vary widely. Some will cause fever, joint pain and swelling, lethargy, lymph node enlargement and rashes. Other diseases can lead to life threatening blood problems and paralysis. Lyme disease is the only tick related
disease that can be prevented in dogs by using an annual vaccine. Some of these diseases can be hard to diagnose and others may result in symptoms that do not resolve even after treatment. Like I said before, ticks are disgusting. The best way for our pets not to get sick is to avoid tick exposure. Yards should be kept mowed with leaves and other debris removed from under bushes and trees where ticks like to hide. Dogs and cats should be checked for tick exposure each time that they return from being outside. Fortunately, there are many products available for dogs and cats that reduce tick exposure. Sprays and dips are generally considered older means of controlling ticks. However, there are some products that are useful. Tick collars are available with a varying degree of effectiveness. There are topical insecticides that are put on the skin of the neck and back which control ticks for one month after each application. This method is currently the most popular preventative. There are several new oral tablets that control ticks for one to three months. Many people are finding these tablets very effective, convenient and they do not leave a residue on their pet. Be careful, some of the dog products are toxic to cats. You should talk with your veterinarian to develop an ideal tick prevention program for your pet. If a tick is found on your pet it should be immediately removed. The best way to safely dislodge a tick is to use tweezers and gently grasp the head and mouth parts and slowly pull the tick away from the skin without twisting. Using alcohol on an attached tick, heating a tick with a match, or painting a tick with finger nail polish are all ineffective ways to remove ticks. The tick should be disposed of by putting it in a designated container of alcohol. Ticks should not be squeezed as this may increase the chance of disease transmission. The skin where the tick was removed should be examined for any tick parts that were not completely removed and then apply a mild disinfectant. Wash your hands well after handling ticks. Ideally, the date of tick removal should be recorded in case your pet does get sick. This may be helpful in deciding if further testing for tick transmitted disease is warranted. It is also important to observe the skin around the tick bite for swelling or redness and carefully noting your pet’s appetite and behavior for any changes. It is time to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather. Ticks are more than just a nuisance, they can transmit deadly diseases. Be careful when entering tick territory by checking your pets and using preventatives. Talk to your veterinarian about what is the best tick preventative product for your pet so we all can have a fun but healthy summer.

WHAT
DOES A NAME MEAN ANYWAY? By: Brittany H. Flynn
N
ames are a part of our identity and help shape who we are. Names come in all forms. They can be our names given at birth, nicknames picked up over the years or names we have through relationships

with one another: like Momma or Daddy. But what exactly does a name mean for a shelter animal? When animals arrive at the shelter, they become a number as a way to identify them. Last year at Rockingham County Animal Shelter, over 5,000 animals were brought into the shelter, either by Animal Control or by the public. And, all of them received an Animal ID Number before being vaccinated and going to live in their new residence at the shelter. Everyday, staff members use these numbers to list vaccinations, record medications, note test results, change locations and, most importantly, change their status to available. When an animal’s status becomes available, they have an adoption photo taken and then receive their name. This name can be anything from commonly used monikers, to favorite television or movie characters, to something unusual and unique. Yet, what makes this name so special, has nothing to do with the Sprite, is a male Beagle/Hound mix a year and a name itself but that it signifies new half old. He’s a friendly chap, eager to please, full of energy and curious about life. A sweet personality beginnings for these animals. No matter what life or what name each makes him a great candidate for a good companion and loyal friend. of these animals had before arriving

at the shelter, when an animal becomes available and gets a new name, the past is forgotten and it’s time to work towards a new and happier future filled with love and hopefully a forever home. Adopting a shelter animal gives that animal a whole new life and a second chance to become part of a family that will love and nurture them in a way that some of these animals have never known. And the whole process starts when the animal receives its new name. All of the animals that become available now have the opportunity to be adopted, to have their adoption fee sponsored, to play with volunteers or to be transferred into a rescue group. When the shelter reaches out to rescue organizations, we include the animal’s name, breed, age and pictures; they are no longer identified by an Animal ID Number. This information is shared among members of the organization to find the perfect foster home. Once the right foster home is found, they are transferred out of the shelter and picked up by a rescue member. This is an exciting time for any animal in the shelter and another part of their journey of becoming someone’s life-long companion and knowing what their final name will be.
When animals arrive at the shelter, they become a number as a way to identify them. Last year at Rockingham County Animal Shelter, over 5,000 animals were brought into the shelter, either by Animal Control or by the public. Volunteers are wonderful assets to the shelter, as well. They come to the shelter to play, bond, walk and groom many of the adoptable animals. Most volunteers end up sponsoring an animal’s adoption fee, too. However, a volunteer’s work doesn’t end when they leave the shelter; they are now actively promoting their favorite animals with family and friends, helping the animals they’ve come to know and love find their perfect match.
No matter what role you have at the shelter, whether an employee, volunteer or rescue organization, we all have one common goal in the lives of the animals that come through the shelter. It’s about getting the animals to a point where they are no longer seen as a number, but instead, have an identity that will lead them to a new home and family and the opportunity to become someone’s best friend. Fenton
is a very sweet young fellow who is the last of a litter from a rescued mother who gave birth to seven puppies. He enjoys going on hikes and snuggling with his foster mom. He is welltrained and would be a wonderful new member of any family. Oh, he loves playing with cats too!
Meet Fenton at AARF from noon to 3pm on Saturdays at AARF’s adoption fairs. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within one hour of Winston-Salem. n
Sputnik
was surrendered to a local shelter by a lady who said he was too active! The gentleman explained that he is a puppy, but she surrendered him anyway. We went immediately to the shelter to get him and give him a chance at a happy home. Sputnik is a darling fellow, and he IS active, but he is a love and loves to snuggle as much as play. He is approximately 6 months old. If you would like to meet Sputnik and make him a part of your family come meet him at a Saturday adoption fair at 311 Harvey Street in Winston Salem from noon to 3pm. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within one hour of Winston-Salem. n
Pascal.
Hello, my name is Pascal. I’m a DSH orange tabby male with a white bib and white paws. I was born in April of 2014 and was rescued from Animal Control when I was very young. I’m a sweet boy who enjoys belly rubs around the clock and cuddling at night. Every time somebody walks into the room I look up to see who it is and then run up to them and rub against their legs. I’m a friendly boy who absolutely loves people! I also get along very well with other cats. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours from noon to 3pm on Saturdays. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption process. n

Aurora
delivered a litter of healthy puppies who have all been adopted. Unfortunately, Aurora is heartworm positive so has begun heartworm treatment. AARF will cover her heartworm care and she will require special care for the next few months. Aurora is housebroken and though shy at first, she warms up to her people fairly quickly. Meet Aurora at AARF from noon to 3pm on Saturdays at AARF’s adoption fairs. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within one hour of Winston-Salem. n
Ginger
has short hair and is an orange (ginger) tabby with white. She was born in January of 2012, has been spayed and is current on shots. She’s a cuddler who loves everybody. She gets along well with other cats and dogs. Contact us for more information about Ginger. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours from noon to 3pm on Saturdays. Emma.
My name is Emma. I’m black and white, short-haired, already spayed, and I do not enjoy attending Adoption Fairs—you might be able to tell that from my picture—I am not smiling! I came to AARF from Animal Control where I gave birth to my kittens. Now that they all have homes, it’s time for me to find a permanent place as well. My foster mom calls me a “lap kitty”—I don’t think that has anything to do with milk. I’m in a foster home with dogs and haven’t eaten one yet, so if you’ve got a dog(s) they’ll be safe if you fall in love with me and bring me home. Contact AARF at www.aarfanimals.org and ask about me, Emma! n

Deborah Cowan, DVM
The Importance of Blood Work! Here it is May again, thank goodness! So many issues that we can discuss, but even though wildlife and their care is a major concern, this article is going to discuss the issue of blood work. Whether your pet is a dog, cat, bird, rabbit or any other species, blood work can help the veterinarian to determine if there is organ failure. And if so, what organ or organs are failing? Could your pet have an infection, or is there a virus? Could your pet be having an allergic reaction to something, or is there a chance that your pet is dealing with parasites? Often when dealing with owners, veterinarians fail to communicate that the blood work can help by telling us what IS NOT wrong. This enables us to back into some of the diagnoses that we make. The reason that it is called the Art and Science of medical practice is because often doctors have to co-ordinate factual information: blood work, with how the pet actually looks and acts (art part) and then draw on experience and other cases to come to conclusions of possible rule-
outs (possible diseases or problems). In today’s society we want immediate results, we want to be assured that we absolutely know what the answers are. When it comes to medicine and determining diseases, it is not always cut and dried. With human medical issues, especially if you have insurance, there are often a multitude of tests run to either rule in or rule out issues. Humans are willing to do this because the costs are not always so high; mostly a co-pay.
answers for the owners. These are the reasons that we do recommend blood work, because it really truly does give us some much needed information in order to treat your pet. On that note, go have a great May, enjoy the flowers and don’t let your pets get overheated (whether they are small, large, furry or scaled).
Animal Hospital of Walnut Cove We treat you and your pets like family!
1020 Alamo Drive Walnut Cove, NC When we are trying to determine disease processes in animals, we often do not have that luxury. We are bound by finances and many times cannot run all the tests necessary to determine the answers. So veterinarians have to do a lot of translating, associating, guessing and assuming in order to try to get some

I have no problem hanging out in my crate if I need to. I follow simple commands like sit and stay. My favs are going for walks on my leash and riding. My one vice is counter surfing if left alone, but I’m a good girl and leave counters alone if my parents are home. If you leave, it’s best I go in my Triad Golden Retriever Rescue crate. Did I mention I’m also housebroken. I really love to be rubbed, so come rub me and fall in love.

is a beautiful long haired cat who just raised six sweet kittens. She and her kittens are all ready for adoption. Swiss Roll’s estimated DOB is 3/7/13. She is a very sweet cat and never misses an opportunity to roll over for a belly rub. She will make a wonderful companion and snuggly lap cat for a lucky owner. She is spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on all shots.
bonded pair. They are about 12-18 months old. Biscuits is a short-haired female. She kneads you like you are dough, hence her name. Gravy is a boy and has beautiful long hair. They both had some GI issues when they came in but are doing great now on better quality food. Biscuits is a little more outgoing, but both are total love bugs. Biscuits loves to be held on her back (like a newborn baby) and Gravy is happy to be a lap cat whenever the opportunity arises. They are really close so it would be ideal if they could get adopted together. Both are very child-friendly and litter-trained. They are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on all shots.

Minnie
Piper.
is between 1-2 years old and is a Pocket Pit Bull Terrier. If you’re looking for a spunky gal to call your own, Minnie is the dog for you! She is very food motivated and loves long walks, balls, romping with her doggie foster brother, and snuggles. She takes direction well and wants nothing more than to please her people. Minnie prefers calmer, larger dogs. She is very sweet, and very smart and enjoys calm, steady introductions with potential new best friends. Minnie is a very calm and relaxed girl herself when not overstimulated. She crates beautifully, not even a whimper. She is very gentle taking treats, loves to chew on bones, and gives kisses. Minnie is currently in foster care where she receives lots of love and attention. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped.
What kind of dog is that? We hear this all the time with Piper. She has a unique look, with one ear up, one ear down, and the appearance of a Shibu Inu/ Terrier mix. At 25 lbs., Piper is a small dog with a big personality. She is sweet and generally calm, but when excited, can jump up and down on her hind legs! Piper loves being a part of all family activities, indoors and out. She loves to snuggle on the couch and go for rides in the car. She is good with other dogs and kids but has too much interest in cats. She is 5-6 years old, micropchipped, spayed, house-trained and up-to-date on shots.

Brady.
Hi! I’m Brady and I am a handful!! Not everyone can handle an excellent 1-1/2 year old Plott Hound mix like me. I need a strong athletic person who likes to move. I LOVE to move! I like to run, hike, walk anything that isn’t sitting still. Well, I lied, if you wear me out I will be a big cuddle bug come nighttime. I love to pretend like I’m a lap dog. I will sit with my head in your lap while you watch all your favorite shows at night. I will sleep next to you and keep you warm. I am in great shape, very smart and know most basic commands. I don’t care too much for cats though, and I think they make great play toys, I can’t seem to keep my eyes off of them. I will be a great addition to the right family! Please come adopt me!!! Oh, and I’m neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on all shots! To find out more information call 336-438-2023 or email hsacinfo@gmail.com. n

is somewhere between two and three years of age and we wonder how much she has been through. Her eyes are sweet but sometimes sad. We know that she had puppies at least once and that they were born in a shelter environment. Shelby is a sweetheart of a pup that deserves the next phase of her life to be wonderful. She is spayed and up-to-date on her shots. She has fit well into her foster home and seems to like her foster siblings (4 legged kind) very much. There’s a very playful side to Shelby that especially comes out when she is around puppies. Would you like to welcome this sweet girl into your family? Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n

Jetta loves to play with her siblings and is always the first one on the playground. She plays hard and she sleeps hard. Jetta is up-to-date on her vaccinations and will soon be spayed. Her adoption fee is $150 to the perfect home. This fee does include her spay and age appropriate vaccines. Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n
Frannie
Anyone looking for a playful puppy by day and a sleepy girl by night? Trinity was born on 2/28/15 and is a Beagle/ Terrier mix. At least that is our expert opinion. Mom is a 20 pound little girl however we imagine dad was a larger kind of guy. Trinity was rescued from, guess where? Trinity, NC, along with her mom and three pups. Trinity has personality abound and will be a great addition to any home.
has been on the market for a year. She came to us broken, literally. She was abandoned with a broken leg at only 8 weeks of age. She is an awesome girl and is in a great foster home, however, she yearns for a home to call her own. Frannie is house-trained and loves her crate. She is a house dog and prefers to keep it that way. Frannie is a big girl so move over and get ready to share your seat if you adopt this girl. Come meet our big girl!

a7 week old Beagle mix, who is just developing his own personality. Mom is the Beagle mix while dad is an unknown, wanted for child abandonment. Amber was originally found as a stray by a Good Samaritan who contacted Red Dog Farm for help. She is a shy girl at first but warms up quickly to her friends. Miss Amber is a sweet girl that will need some patience and time to warm up to her family. She seems to do fine with other dogs and cats. She just came to us so we are still getting to know her better. We will continue to update you as we get to know her. If you are interested in adopting Amber, please start by filling out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n
Bert
Sulli is a 14 year old quarter horse who came to us when his owners could no longer afford his care. He had to have an eye removed due to a mass that had grown on it but he has now healed and looks great. Horses generally do just fine after losing one eye. We are told that he has been ridden and shown but that it has been a while, so we will have our trainer work with him to see what he remembers. What a handsome guy! Fill out an adoption application for Sulli at www.reddogfarm.com. n
Stagger Lee. Six miniature
came to Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network when his owners could no longer keep him. He is a very sweet boy and is quickly learning to “step up”. We think he knew it previously but had forgotten it. He did great for his wing trim and is generally a happy guy. He loves a lukewarm bath and gazing out the window in his foster home. Bert doesn’t seem to be bothered by the other birds or dogs in his foster home. He would make a great addition to any home.

Elvira
His foster mom reports that he is an absolute wonderful chin! Chilly is extremely friendly and loves scratches under his chin (LOL - no pun intended). What a sweetheart! His foster mom says he loves playtime, his dust baths and enjoys exploring. He is not shy around the cat in his foster home and is just a great all-around chinchilla. He enjoys playing with his foster brother chinchilla and would do well in a home where he would have a playmate.
is a two year old potbellied pig who lost her original home when her owners went through a divorce. She is now in a foster home and shares her field with another pig and several goats and chickens. Her foster dad reports that she is a friendly, happy girl and gets along well with all of her pasture mates. Elvira is an active pig that loves attention. She will rub on her foster parent’s leg and jump on their hind legs to get attention. She loves carrots and she’s good with goats, dogs, and chickens.

is a beautiful, friendly Rottweiler. She was found wandering down Cone Boulevard in Greensboro. She now resides with us at the SPCA awaiting her fur-ever home. were adopted together as puppies from us 3 years ago. Their owners made the heartbreaking decision of surrendering them back to us due to an unexpected family situation that has made it impossible for them to keep them. We are trying our hardest to find them a home together. They are both very attached to each other and would be heartbroken without the other. They cry and whimper any time that they are apart. They are super sweet, affectionate, well-mannered, and will make a fantastic pair of family dogs for a lucky fur-ever family. They are so gentle and friendly with kids and other dogs.

spunky character needs a home! Is it yours?
Can you imagine being adopted into what you thought was going to be your forever home, only to be abandoned 9 years later? Otto can. Because it happened to him. Unfortunately, many people no longer want their pets once they get older. All Otto asks for is a loving hand or a warm lap. He is very affectionate. He gets along great with other cats so the more feline brothers and sisters, the better! Can you show Otto that it’s never too late for a fur-ever home?

Stormy Max is a Japanese Bobtail purchased from a breeder when he was only 6 weeks old. Raised as an only cat by an elderly couple, he was declawed when just 4 months old. With no cat siblings, and owners that didn’t know about raising a high energy purebred, Stormy developed biting problems that cost him his home and almost his life. He’ll need a very special home with someone that knows a lot about cat behavior. Currently he’s on a daily dose of prozac, and has not bitten since he has been in a foster home. Raised as an “only”, Stormy Max has terrible cat Tailless Cat Rescue skills although he might do OK with a high energy, low fear cat. He is also supposed to do well with dogs. He’s neutered, up-todate on vaccinations, FeLV and FIV negative and microchipped. He will go home with the opportunity for his new family to consult with a cat behavior specialist by phone at our expense, and a month’s follow up with that specialist in case the biting behavior returns in a more home-like environment. Honey was rescued while running on the side of the highway. She clearly had a litter of puppies recently and was in horrible shape, emaciated and full of parasites. The litter of puppies was, sadly, never located and no owners claimed her. She has since been nursed back to health and is thriving in The Fort Rescue her foster home! Honey is great with dogs and loves to play. She is also wonderful with children and is ready for her forever home! She is crate-trained, housebroken and fully up-to-date on all medical care. A Healing Mission
Honoring heroes, part of the Patriot Rover mission, is to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. By David Cantara
C
arolina Patriot Rovers Inc. is a High Point based nonprofit organization founded in 2010. Patriot Rovers furnish a lifeline of support through supplying trained psychiatric service dogs to veterans who return home with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Founder, David Cantara, is a third generation honorably discharged veteran. As a member of the Patriot Guard Riders of NC, he has attended hundreds of funerals for veterans, including some who succumbed to post PTSD when they returned home. Cantara felt the need to make a difference in the lives of veterans dealing with PSTD. Using his skills as master trainer and canine behavioral expert, Cantara began a pilot program in 2010 teaching a Golden Retriever named Daisy Duke to work as a service dog for a veteran with PTSD. The program proved so successful, he expanded it to create Patriot Rovers, Inc., A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, which has trained, certified, and placed 100 dogs

during the past four years. Honoring heroes, part of the Patriot Rover mission, is to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. The names of the service dogs represent fallen heroes and are chosen by the gold star families left behind. Debbie Halstead of Greensboro became a gold star mother when her only son, Sgt. Nicholas Gibbs, was killed in action December 6, 2006, in a battle at Ar Ramadi, Iraq. Gibby, the service dog named for her son, was one of four dogs that graduated from the training course in December. Halstead had the opportunity to meet Stephen, a veteran from Mocksville, who received the dog. “We stay in touch,” Halstead said. “He sends me pictures of Gibby on my cell phone. “The whole Patriot Rover program is awesome. David (Cantara) puts a lot of time and effort into getting these dogs and training them. It does not go unappreciated. I have the upmost respect for him.” “I have always loved dogs,” Cantara said. “In 1989, I started training them in canine disc and had several champions. Now I spend my time training the service dogs for veterans.” As an AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluator, Cantara looks for a dog that has drive as well as a relaxed demeanor. He has found that Golden and Labrador Retrievers are the best breeds to meet all the needs of the veterans who receive them. To fully train a dog takes 16 months at a cost of about $20,585.00. Starting when they are 8-10 weeks old, the dogs, learn basic commands and socialization. Once spayed or neutered they go through training for Canine Good Citizen and Canine Good Citizen advanced titles. The training then includes public access work dogs, meaning they must be able to navigate elevators, escalators and every type of public transportation possible – including automobiles, trains, planes and buses.
To fully train a dog takes 16 months at a cost of about $20,585.00. Starting when they are 8-10 weeks old, the dogs, learn basic commands and socialization. Once spayed or neutered they go through training for Canine Good Citizen and Canine Good Citizen advanced titles.
Only when that is completed, do they begin learning the skills needed to be a service dog, including but not limited to, pulling wheelchairs, bracing someone as they get up and turning lights on or off, as well as the ability to interrupt panic attacks. Once assigned to a veteran, the dog and veteran participate in Rover Academy Training together, so the animal can meet the veteran’s specific needs. They are together for 10 days, 24 hours a day, with special blocks of instruction each morning, afternoon and evening. These blocks of instruction are designed to educate soldiers to everything they will encounter as a dog owner including, handling skills, feeding/nutrition, grooming, veterinary care and much more. During the Rover Academy, veterans are evaluated to make sure they can properly handle and care for their service dog, once they pass all evaluations, only then do they graduate. A board of directors oversees the Patriot Rovers program. Besides Cantara, the others included on the board are Army Major Robert Stillwell, a former Army Ranger and Purple Heart Veteran, who helped Cantara start the program, Army Colonel Tony Dingmann, Colonel Ruth Lee, Chaplain Major Wayne Lehto, Sargent Cory Collins, Doctor Margaret Bertrand and Doctor Douglas Nabel.
So far, Patriot Rovers have been placed with veterans in six states and named for fallen heroes from 20 states. “Unfortunately there is a waiting list of names for the dogs,” Cantara said, indicating the high number of fallen heroes and limited number of available Patriot Rovers graduates. The majority of veterans in our program are referred by the Veterans Administration. Patriot Rovers is on track to graduate 10 dogs in 2015. “The more money we have, the more dogs we could train,” Cantara said. “There is no mission without margin. I take this very seriously, I don’t put a low value on what we do. “Training the animals as service dogs for veterans is a lot of weight to carry,” Cantara admitted. “But I would gladly do it all again if needed.” To learn more about Patriot Rovers go to www.Patriotrovers.Org. www.facebook.com/PatriotRovers

Theo is a sweet tuxedo, approximately 13 years old, by vet’s best guess. He loves affection and a soft bed! Theo was a pet cat who was dumped into the woods to live with the ferals about 6 years ago, and he was trapped and neutered. For many years he lived happily in the woods with the other cats, but this past fall, when an aggressive kitty appeared in the woods, a colony caretaker trapped this sweet boy again, to bring him home. Unfortunately, at some point, Theo caught FIV (only Juliet’s House Rescue transmitted through biting/blood contact, often transmitted from one male cat to another.) Fortunately, Theo has been very healthy over the past 6 months and shows no sign of infection, and he is the most peaceful, calm cat himself, so is a low risk for transmitting the virus to another cat. He loves to rub up against legs, give head butts, and is a loud purrer,. There’s a good chance that with a comfortable indoor life and good vet care, Theo can live another 5-7 years happy and in good health.

Parker
Ruff Love Rescue
had a very rough life before coming to Ruff Love Rescue. He was tied to a truck, accidentally dragged down the road and almost died from extensive injuries. He is now completely healed and ready for his forever home! Parker’s foster mom has shown him what it’s like to live indoors, go for car rides and snuggle on the couch. He is house-trained and has basic training. He’s a Rottie mix, 1.5 years old, smart, playful - a big boy with a great, goofy personality! We believe it’s best if he is an only dog, because he has shown some jealousy towards other dogs. He is a special dog that is waiting for his special person!

Training Your Pet
Outdoor Adventures!
With Your Canine Companion
With some training and preparation, the outdoor adventure will be more enjoyable for you and your dog.
By James Voyatzis
W
ith spring weather arriving, many people head outside for their favorite outdoor activities. Instead of boarding your pups while you are enjoying your favorite pastime, bring them along! Find an experienced trainer to assist with building the basics of obedience. Sitzen K9 Training offers workshops and private lessons for training your dog to be your outdoor companion. With some training and preparation, the outdoor adventure will be more enjoyable for you and your dog.
Before The Adventure Preparing for your adventure will keep your dog comfortable and safe. Protect your pup from diseases carried by insects with a preventative medication. Be sure to administer the medication in advance, so it has time to take effect. Make sure your dog is up-todate on all of his vaccinations. If your dog is going to be in the water, your veterinarian may advise additional vaccinations. There is a wide selection of outdoor gear for dogs. Backpacks for dogs give them the opportunity to carry some of the load. He can tote his own water bowl, food, first aid kit, sun screen, treats, toys, or other essentials. Fit the backpack according to the manufacturer’s instructions. You should be able to fit two fingers under the pack. Load both sides of the pack equally so that one side isn’t heavier than the other. The total weight of the pack should not exceed 1/4 of the dog’s body weight.
Swimming Water activities offer enormous fun and exercise for dogs. When a dog is introduced to water properly, they will quickly learn to love it. Don’t just throw the dog into the water, and assume he can swim. The key
40
to introducing your dog to water, is to start slowly. Even if your dog is a strong swimmer, it is a good idea to have a life jacket for your dog. Weather conditions and strong currents could make swimming challenging. When you are purchasing a life jacket, make sure it fits properly. Giving the dog an opportunity to get used to the life jacket before they go swimming, is a good idea.
After the Adventure Once the adventure is over, conduct a thorough check of the dog for ticks, scratches, or wounds (especially on his paws). Give him a bath and good brushing to remove any debris or “other stuff ” he has collected along the way. Spending time outdoors with your pup is a great way to build a life-long bond with him.
Hiking/Camping There is nothing worse than hiking with your dog for several miles with him pulling you down the trail. Maintaining control of your dog will keep him safe, and make the outdoor adventure much more enjoyable for both of you. Before going out on the trail make sure that your dog walks nicely on a leash. It may be permitted to let your dog explore off leash. Make sure your dog’s recall “come” is reliable before allowing him off leash. When approaching busy roadways, put your dog on leash to maintain control of him. While on your adventure, keep a close eye on your dog. There are many hazards that your dog may come across. A strong understanding of “leave it” will help keep him out of trouble. A steady “stay” command is also a big part of maintaining control. Having your dog stay while you refill the water bottles, load the car, or take a picture is very useful. Camping can be a very relaxing pastime. However, if you have an unruly dog, camping can be a nightmare. Controlling your dog around the campsite is essential for his safety (and your sanity!). Train a “place” command. This keeps him in one spot, until you release him. You can use his dog bed or a blanket as his “place” around the campsite. Use his crate to confine him when you aren’t able to watch him.

Ranger, James and Trooper
James has always been a lover of animals. He started by training his own dogs in obedience. While working for a local Sheriff’s Office, he witnessed the amazing skill that the department K9s had, and became interested in training working dogs. James attended a school for dog trainers where he learned obedience and working dog training. James left the sheriff’s office to pursue his passion and started Sitzen K9 Training. James and his wife Lisa have 3 dogs (Ranger, Trooper, and Cane) and a special cat (Halo).

SitzenK9Training@yahoo.com www.facebook.com/SitzenK9 Iris & Booker are healthy, happy, social 6-month-old kittens, both born with an eye defect that doesn’t dampen their rambunctious spirits in the least! Though visually impaired, Iris and Booker get around just fine, climb their cat tree like monkeys, and never miss the litter box. When they’re 8 to 10 months old, they’ll have cryosurgery (surgery already paid for!) to preserve the vision they have. Curious Booker has a cute habit of cocking his eye to get a better angle to see what you’re doing. He loves to snuggle with his foster mom and dad. Iris follows her foster mom around, purrs loudly, and stands on her hind legs to be picked up. Raised with other cats and dogs, Booker and Iris are an especially bonded pair and must be adopted together. $125 adoption fee includes testing, spay/ neuter, microchip, upto-date vaccinations. ADOPTION INCENTIVE! Iris and Booker receive half-price vaccines and discounted wellness exams for life if brought in for annual check-ups to Sheets Pet Clinic.

came into Animal Control as a stray. This poor guy was old, blind and weighed an incredible 14.2 lbs. He was already neutered, heartworm negative and housebroken. In 4 months, he’s lost 4 lbs. He’s an easy guy, not a big barker and is crate-trained and housebroken if taken out often. He gets around quite well for being blind. He has no health issues and requires no eye meds. He is up-to-date on his shots Chihuahua Rescue and on heartworm and flea preventative. He is very sweet and just wants to sit in your lap and be loved on. He has had a dental. If you’d like to give this older dog a warm place to sleep and a chance to be loved for the rest of his life, please go to chihuahua-rescue.com and then click on the adoption tab across the top of the page. n

Special Feature
Sometimes,
Your World Can Change…
T
hree years ago, I was first introduced to your magazine at the Food Lion on Lewisville Clemmons Road. My 11 year old son was looking for a rabbit and I noticed the magazine and wondered if it was an adoption magazine. Inside, I found baby bunnies featured who were fostered by Red Dog Farm. We adopted one and she made a lovely pet. Unfortunately, she passed away this past October and left a very big hole in my family’s heart. Since then, I have continued to pick up the magazine looking for rescue animals and adoption fairs. The work that the agencies do that are featured in your magazine is wonderful. Two weekends ago, my 13 year old son, Evan and my 8 year old daughter, Karabeth were at Pet Supermarket in Thruway Shopping Center in Winston-Salem. We had stopped in to purchase a cat toy for our 6 month old kitten, Gia, who we adopted in October from the Humane Society. Stepping Stones Canine Rescue was holding an adoption fair. As we walked by and looked at all the animals, I passed by the dogs without paying much attention. And then I saw him…His foster mom, Lizz, was holding this golden colored dog in her arms like a baby. He looked heavy and I couldn’t believe she was able to hold him like that. I doubled back with my children and started to talk to her. He was the sweetest dog ever. As she put him down, the dog was sweet and calm with the children. She explained that Stepping Stones had rescued him from a hoarding situation in Nash County. He was one of 6 and they had been kept in a cardboard box for 9 weeks. He was the sickest of the litter and had rickets and was requiring Vitamin D treatments. Her last statement caused me to catch my breath. My daughter, who is 8, was diagnosed with x-linked hypophosphatemic rickets at 18 months of age. She is required to take Vitamin D and Phosphorus on a daily basis. She is extremely self conscious about herself because her legs are not “straight”. She has had to wear “Forrest Gump” type braces and has had double knee surgeries in an effort to straighten her legs. She has required counseling on a regular basis for things as simple as Karabeth, Nash and Evan wearing shorts during May 2015 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails 44
the summer months because she doesn’t want others to see her scars. She was amazed to learn that a dog could have rickets and so was I. I left the adoption fair very excited about the dog. I discussed the dog with my husband. He had been wanting a dog for quite some time but hadn’t grown serious in his search for one. The more that I thought about this one, the more sure I was that he was “our” dog. We contacted Erin at Stepping Stones to inquire about him. She and foster mom Lizz brought Nash to our house the following Thursday. During the home visit and interview, Erin showed Karabeth a picture of Nash the day after he was rescued. His legs were bowed from the lack of nourishment. My daughter immediately pulled up her pant leg to show Erin the curve in her leg and her scar. My husband and I were speechless. This truly was the first time that I felt my daughter was accepting of her condition…all because of a rescue dog. The weekend followed and Karabeth told grandparents and friends that we were going to adopt a dog and not just any dog, but a dog that had rickets! My mother commented that she had never heard Karabeth acknowledge that she had rickets. Nash came to his new home with us this past Saturday. Our family has been so excited to have him for many reasons, including the therapy he seems to be providing to our daughter. We are anxious to begin his formal puppy training. Erin had recommended to us that we contact Geralyn Kelly at Elite Canine in Winston Salem. In speaking with her, she asked if we had been referred to her and how we found our dog. I told her about Nash, Karabeth and Erin and Geralyn said that I could go home and tell Karabeth that she also had rickets when she was growing up and that she too had worn a leg brace. I guess I am writing to you because on the inside of the cover of your current magazine, a quote is there that says..”You can’t change the whole world by adopting a dog, but you can change the whole world for that dog.” I would argue that Nash and Erin from Stepping Stones have changed ours!
Love your magazine… JoBeth P. Souza
