Vet’s Corner Dr. Jessica Taylor is a small animal veterinarian at Guilford Jamestown Veterinary Hospital with a passion for client communication, as well as interests in preventative care, pain management, and cardiology. She is a graduate of North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine and has practiced in the Triad since 2006. She shares her home with her husband and two daughters, the laziest hound dog on earth, and a tyrant of a cat. In any spare time, she enjoys running, reading, and writing. Dr. Taylor looks forward to meeting you and your pet!

elines are known for being fickle. One day they love you, the next day they are stand-offish and seem spiteful! Cats love to knock your priceless treasures off of tall shelves, then deny it ever happened or blame the dog. Unfortunately, many pet cats get surrendered or euthanized for house-soiling that pet owners cannot tolerate or remedy. The good news is that there are many steps we can take to help prevent this from happening and ensure a long, healthy relationship for you and your cat.

First step- find the underlying cause! Cats are not hateful, despite what many people think. If your kitty is having accidents, the first place to start is with an exam by your veterinarian. He or she will look for signs of bladder inflammation, crystals in the urine, pain, or other underlying diseases that can lead to changes in urination. Hormonal diseases such as diabetes and hyperthyroidism can cause urinary problems, as can bacterial infections and bladder stones. Appropriate treatment of these conditions can resolve the unwanted behavior and extend your pet’s life, but diagnosis is key! Some cats are diagnosed with Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC), a diagnosis reached when other medical causes have been ruled out. Some severe cases can cause a blockage, resulting in an emergency (seek treatment if your pet is not producing urine in the litter box). FIC is more common in male cats, and obesity, decreased activity, multiple cats, and indoor housing increase the risk. Cats also exhibit marking behavior, which usually shows up as urinating on a vertical surface, often in an attempt to establish territory or as a result of other cats encroaching on the pet’s personal space. Diagrams of the house and watching for outside visitors and stray cats are important to distinguish marking behaviors from other house-soiling. Finally, some cats have house-soiling accidents in response to the type of litter, litter box, litter box placement, or competition in the home. Discussing the number of litter boxes, type of litter, and interaction with other cats and pets is essential to dissect the triggers.

Second Step- treatment and sanity! If your feline friend has an underlying medical condition, be sure to follow the doctor’s instructions carefully, including medical progress exams. Stopping medication or food too soon can cause a relapse of symptoms and start the frustration all over again! There are many prescription foods that can aid in control of some of these conditions by decreasing urine crystal formation and reducing stress. Be sure to ask your vet about long term nutrition goals!

10

May 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

Other remedies include adding litter boxes, changing the type or size of the litter box, changing the litter to an unscented litter, or making litter boxes more easily accessible. Many older cats may have trouble getting in or out of the litter box, so even getting a box with a lower entry can make a huge difference. Ultimately, many unwanted behaviors in cats can be remedied with some detective work and persistence. Be sure to bring any concerns to your veterinarian as soon as they occur for the best chance at reaching an answer quickly. We want you and your felines to live in harmony and mutual respect. However, we can’t promise they won’t break stuff –

cats will be cats!

Five Pillars of a Healthy Feline Environment*

1. Provide a safe place: offer a secluded, individualized location such as a perch, quiet room, or enclosure where they can retreat during stressful events such as having visitors, construction in the home, or from other pets. 2. Make sure multi-cat households have adequate resources: avoid competition and friction between housemates by providing multiple stations for food, water, and litter box access. Be sure there are multiple hiding and resting places, too. 3. Provide time for play and predatory behavior: Boredom stresses cats. Provide opportunity for your feline to hunt using treat toys and puzzles, as well as plush toys they can attack and carry away. If you use a laser pointer, be sure it lands on an object they can attack to avoid frustration. 4. Positive and predictable human-cat interaction: regular, friendly interaction with people is good for your feline, but they may prefer shorter periods of petting than you would like. Follow their lead on the petting and don’t pester them. 5. Don’t overwhelm their sense of smell: cats use their nose to evaluate their surroundings, so avoid introducing heavily scented litter, detergents, and new foods that can trigger stress. Some pheromone products (such as Feli-way) can reduce stress and decrease house-soiling when used properly. *For more details on cat care, visit www.catvets.com. The Feline Pracitioners’ website.

LIFE’S RUFF. LET’S PLAY!

May 20 & 21, 2017

By Karen Fullerton

Proceeds of Triad Dog Games benefit The Sergei Foundation...Saving companion pets’ lives by providing veterinary financial assistance to families unable to afford emergency, life-saving care.

T

riad Dog Games is almost here! This much recognized and anticipated event for the dog-loving community will be May 20-21 at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds. Apart from the event’s simple “dog appeal,” its popularity stems in part from the fact that it has something for everybody—from the experienced competitor coming from Georgia hoping to win an invitation to a World Championship event, to the owner of a rescued Chihuahua who wants to enter our version of Dachshund races, “Doggie Daches.” You don’t have to enter a competition, or even own a dog, to have a good time. Come admire the awesome athleticism of competing canines, visit vendors, eat some food, and help save the lives of sick and injured pets at the same time. Proceeds from admission benefits The Sergei Foundation, a non-profit that helps companion dogs and cats get needed vet care both locally and throughout North Carolina. Tickets are $10, but only $5 for kids 10 and under (additional donations given at the ticket booth will be donor-matched, so please consider “rounding up” or giving an extra dollar or two). For complete event and registration information, visit TriadDogGames.com.

The only event of its kind in NC Triad Dog Games is a one-of-a-kind event in North Carolina. While there are many dog sport competitions, none bring them all together in one mega-event that draws approximately 5,000 people. Nowhere else can the same dog and handler compete in more than one dog sport, on the same weekend, in the same place. Event founder, Karen Fullerton, is also the founder and CEO of The Sergei Foundation. “Fundraising is especially difficult for a smaller organization such as ours,” states

12

May 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

Ms. Fullerton. “My goal was to create a unique experience for people and their pets that would stand out from other events in hopes people would give generously for our one-of-a-kind cause.”

Dock jumping A spectator favorite! At the dock jumping or dock diving event, dogs compete in distance or height jumping from a fenced trailer dock into an above-ground pool that holds approximately 20,000 gallons of water. Ultimate Air Dogs (UAD) runs this event and has competitors who come from as far away as Ohio and Florida to earn club points and move to higher divisions. Beginners are more than welcome to enter the competition; UAD’s event fees typically start at $25 if you pre-register. Many pet owners are curious if their water-loving dog will actually take the plunge. Not quite sure? You can decide while you are there to practice with your dog in between the competitive “splashes” as time allows for a $10 fee.

Disc sports Sometimes called “Frisbee-Dogs,” Triad Dog Games is pleased to welcome Southeast Disc Dogs to run its Skyhoundz disc sport events. Saturday will feature a World-Qualifying DiscDogathon. This event is for experienced, canine disc sport competitors. Winners in each event earn an invitation to Skyhoundz’ World Championship competition in the fall. Of the seven competitions in this event, a spectator favorite is definitely Freestyle; it’s both a sport and a performance art. Dogs and handlers perform in creative, acrobatic maneuvers with a flying disc — all choreographed to music. Beginners are welcome to try the novice, local competition on Sunday. This is a simple throw and catch event where you try to get your dog to make as many catches as

you can within a set amount of time. Event fees run from $10 and up depending on your event and how many dogs are entered.

Flyball This is the only event at Triad Dog Games where pre-registration was required through a North American Flyball Association sanctioned team in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. Come watch these lightning-fast dogs as teams race against each other—over hurdles—to a spring box that releases a tennis ball to be relayed to the next dog in line. Flyball is the only inside event, and it is air conditioned should it get too hot outside! First in Flight Flyball Club of Winston Salem is running this event. They will have plenty of information about the sport and how to become involved locally, including flyball training opportunities.

Other events Instead of having a formal agility competition, Triad Dog Games is opening up this popular sport as a training and practice event. Enter to try the agility obstacles and get training tips from professional trainers. More experienced? You may pay for timed runs. Brylin Obedience Specialty School of King, NC is hosting the agility events, as well as Rally and Fast CAT. Doggy “Daches” is our version of Dachshund races. It allows all small dogs under 20 pounds to race. In past years, Chihuahuas, small Poodles, Miniature Doberman Pinchers, and other small dogs have raced alongside Dachshunds in this very quick, 30-foot race. Don’t blink, or you’ll miss the finish!

ABOUT THE SERGEI FOUNDATION Founded in 2009, The Sergei Foundation has served thousands of people in lower-income families, helping them to receive critical veterinary care for their companion dog or cat. The Sergei Foundation is a North Carolina, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is 100% funded by charitable, tax-deductible donations from individuals and businesses — like yours. Visit SergeiFoundation.org for more information, to donate, and to read the wonderful stories about the pets we have helped.

Training Your Pet

Puppy Socialization: Preparing Your Puppy for Good Adult Behavior by Linda Hofmann

The most critical time in your dog’s life is right now...Puppyhood! During the first five months there are three developmental deadlines that could have lasting affects in adulthood. — Socialization by 12 weeks — Learning Bite inhibition by 18 weeks — Adolescent age reinforcements by 5 months

Proper socialization at critical developmental periods, will prepare a puppy for positive human and animal relationships as well as accepting new experiences as an adult dog. A puppy will go through eight Developmental Periods in their lifetime: —Prenatal - in utero —Neonatal - birth to 12 days —Transitional - 12 days to 3 weeks — Socialization - 3 weeks to 12, (but less than 16 weeks) —Juvenile - 12 weeks - sexual maturity — Adolescent - Sexual maturity to social maturity —Adult - Social maturity to 7+ years —Senior - 7+ years and older Of these eight periods, socialization is the most important period of development that will shape and define adult behaviors. Once puppies leave the nurturing environment of their mom and litter mates, they enter a critical developmental period. During this time, your puppy should meet and interact with many types of people, especially children, men, women, and strangers. Your puppy should meet 100 people before three months of age! Introduce your puppy to as many other animals, places, sounds and experiences as possible to give them confidence in living in the real world environments. Puppy socialization should take place when your puppy is 8-16 weeks old, the ideal

stage of development. Socializing your puppy helps them to become a happy, healthy and a well behaved family member. Enrolling in puppy socialization classes is a safe, controlled way to expose your puppy to novel environmental stimuli. Attending puppy socialization classes is the single most important thing you can do for your dog in its lifetime. Through social play, puppies learn how to communicate and interact with other puppies and dogs. Puppies need opportunities to play with puppies of various breeds in order to develop normal canine communication skills. Puppies deprived of play during this period may be incapable of play later in life. In addition to poor social skills, this can in fact, contribute to adult dog aggression.

Puppies who do not receive early socialization may react with fear and aggression to new things as an adult dog.

A good puppy socialization class will limit the puppy age to the social period and divide groups 8-11 weeks (younger) and

12-16 weeks (older). In order to provide a safe environment, proof of initial vaccinations and a veterinary exam within 10 days prior to class should be required. Class size should be limited to allow each puppy opportunities to explore, learn and receive individual attention. Treats and praise should be used liberally and given in a positive manner. Class content should include: — Social “play” to develop normal canine communications skills — Confidence building exercises to increase awareness and acceptance of new things — Exposure to new sights and sounds — People handling to teach acceptance of routine procedures at home, vet visits and grooming experiences — Parent education to enhance these skills at home — Develop Awareness of Own Chew Toys — Training in Bite Inhibition All new puppy parents want the best for their new family member, providing the proper socialization at the critical development period will give that puppy the positive skills and shaping that will stay with them a lifetime.

Jax,

Brisco,

#2389, is a super energetic, two year old Boxer mix who is eager to please, especially when treats are involved! He is a cuddle bug, through and through, opting to settle on the couch in a human’s lap and snooze instead of laying on his bed. Jax loves other dogs and would love to have a fur sibling in the home to play with. He is housebroken, crate-trained and is getting better and better on leash. Jax needs an active but calm and patient family willing to help him burn off his abundant energy and use positive reinforcement when training him. If you can provide this boy the home he so deserves, submit an Adoption Interest Form today!

#2511, is a handsome boy who is quiet and a bit timid when in a new environment. He enjoys perching on a cat tree and watching his brother, Logan, play with toys. It may take a while for this sweet boy to warm up to us humans but we’re sure that once he does, he’ll make a family very happy. He would certainly benefit from finding a forever home with his brother who helps him feel more comfortable.

Logan,

#2512, is a good looking, social boy who is super friendly and feels right at home in new environments. He loves to play with toys and entice his brother, Briscoe, to curl up and snooze alongside of him in freshly laundered clothing! Logan helps Briscoe feel more secure at home due to his more outgoing personality so we would love to see these boys adopted into a forever home together! Sissy,

#1646. Bonpurrr! I am Sissy the Sweet, a laid-back girl with a gentle meow and beautiful glossy fur. I love to be petted and have my head and chin scratched. While I don’t really like to be picked up, I do enjoy sitting next to you to keep you company. I am the most active in the morning and early evening and little stuffed mice are my absolute favorite toys to play with. I love to lounge upon my foster mom’s piano while I listen to her play and accompany her with my purrs...What do you say? Shall we make beautiful music together? Call 336-438-2023, visit www.hsaconline.org or send an email to hsacinfo@gmail.com for more information. n

R2,

name is Chauncey! I am a two year old Lab mix looking for my forever home. I am a cuddly boy with quite the playful side. I can be a bit shy at first, but once you gain my trust I am the most loyal friend. My favorite activities include wrestling with other pups, doing morning yoga, and getting belly/chin rubs. I have big hazel eyes and smiley lips that are sure to win you over. I just know that once I find the right home, I will be the most loving companion. Are you the family for me?

#2458. Looking for a handsome boy with abounding energy and joy to greet you at the door when you come home from work? If so…look no further! My name is R2 and I am a Boxer and Labrador mix who loves long strolls around the block or hikes at the park. I so enjoy the outdoors and could use a little more leash training…I’m eager to learn if you’re eager to teach me! I already know “sit” and “shake paws” and love to show my tricks off for kids, especially when treats are involved! I enjoy spending time with my people, lounging on the couch after some exercise and I’ll keep myself entertained while you’re away. I’m already housebroken, up-to-date on vaccines and ready to move in with you!

Chester. Hi! My name is Chester. I have had a pretty uninteresting life up until now. For most of my life I lived outside and chained up. I barely saw any humans, and the ones I did see didn’t treat me very well. I lived outdoors, through all kinds of weather. I was fed and given water but I didn’t really get to see any doctors. Right around the time I was 3 years old I ended up at a shelter. I was so stressed out and scared. Somehow my luck kept changing... I was adopted by a rescue group and brought to a dog Tarheel Weimrescue daycare and boarding facility. Here I finally saw a doctor who said I was pretty healthy - but had these things called heartworms. I had to go through heartworm treatment, which was really hard on me. Now, though I am told I am totally better and ready to be adopted! I love my life now, it is so different. I play all day with a bunch of new dog friends and I love my foster moms who work at the daycare. They all love me so much and say all the time how much I have changed. My tail is always wagging - I didn’t even know it could wiggle like that! My perfect home will be one without children. I do fine with most other dogs, but I don’t like dogs that are really dominant. I am housebroken and crate-trained and ready for my next step! I can’t wait to be a part of my own family! If you can offer me a home, apply at: www.tarheelweimrescue.org. n

LOVING PET INN ADOPTIONS 336.393.0000 / www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org

Jack

Luna

is a tiny 7.8 pound 7 month old purebred Min Pin puppy. He is very sweet, loves people and likes to stick close by. He enjoys laps, snuggles and giving you kisses. He bonds quickly. In his prior home he liked playing with the cat. He is a true attention hog and would prefer not to share laps or toys with another dog but is totally happy sharing his toys with people. He is an adorable puppy with the typical Min Pin bravado (thought actually a little shy initially) who will be amazing with an owner familiar with the breed. Adoption donation $175.

is a 17 pound, 9 year old Rat Terrier mix. She is affectionate and loves being with people, a cuddly girl who rolls over for tummy rubs. She is submissive and friendly to new people, sits on command and seems to be house-trained. She has an easygoing attitude and has been fine with the other little dogs in our rescue. Small children make her too nervous. She dreams of living with a family that will keep her close by and take her lots of places since she is not fond of being alone. She loves to take walks and is learning about toys. Adoption donation $100.

Jack Frost

Sassy.

is an 18 month old, 35 pound pup and we were told that he was a Wheaton/ Jack Russell mix by his prior owner. He knows the commands sit, shake and lay down and readily complies. Jack is a friendly, confident dog who grew up in a family with another dog and children. He is snuggly, affectionate and loves to be close. He is young, intelligent and energetic so he needs a family that will take him on long walks, play with him, and mentally challenge him. He is house-trained. Adoption donation $200.

Two year old Sassy Cat is, well, not much of a sassy cat. In fact, he was very much a terrified, feral, probably abused cat who, after many months in our shelter, has decided that he likes one person here very much and remains terrified of everyone else. He came to us with a senior Chihuahua (adopted already). The Chihuahua was in terrible shape and the cat just huddled with the dog in a decrepit dog house, two sad animals comforting each other. Sassy Cat remains interested in dogs and may do well in a home with a very calm senior dog or he may be happiest as a barn cat. We are open to all options. Adoption donation $25.

Spanky.

Forrest

My name is Spanky. I am an 8 month old, 40 pound terrier mix puppy. I am a sweet, snuggly, playful boy who was rescued and fostered by a really nice lady. I like other dogs but don’t always remember my manners since I’m a goofy puppy. I am doing very well with my house-training on a schedule. I am very athletic, but am calm when I am inside or crated. I love all people, even kids. I have had all my vet care and am ready to go to my new home. Email my foster mom at sandraktucker@gmail.com if you want to meet me. Adoption fee $100. (Courtesy Listing).

is an 8 month old, 24 pound puppy who lived his life tied to a porch banister, often with no food or water. He was so desperate for a real life, he nearly hung himself trying to jump from the porch. Forrest loves being in rescue! He gets to play with other dogs, run around the yard, and he makes instant people friends. He is full of energy and joy! This affectionate boy is super smart but needs to learn everything, of course. He is very trainable. Adoption donation $150.

RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com

Meet Ruby,

Pippin. This sweet girl came to us

or as her friends like to call her, Ruby Roo. This girl is a doll. She is too sweet and gets along with other dogs very well! She can be a bit nervous in front of new people, but warms up quickly! Ruby was found in Julian running the country side. She was living there for about 4 months before someone contacted us (Red Dog Farm) about trying to bring her in and find her a loving home! She has completed her stray hold, been spayed, microchipped and vaccinated.

pregnant and about to pop! On March 23rd she gave birth to 3 tabby kittens! She will need to be with her kittens for another 5 weeks before they can be weaned, so it will be a bit of time before she can go to her forever home, but we are going to start accepting applications! (The kittens will also be available for adoption soon but cannot go to their new homes until they are about 10 weeks old). Pippin is very sweet and after warming up to new people, she lets you love on her lots! She is a complete pur-pot. Since she has been pregnant, we have not had her around many other animals but we believe she would do well with other cats and chill dogs!

Do you have room for this sweet girl in your heart and home? If so, please fill out the application online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

If you are interested in adopting this little mama, please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n

Paco

Hogarth

is a 6 month old fancy gecko. He is still young and learning how to be handled but should be ready for adoption in about a month or so once he gets used to being handled by humans. His adoption fee will be $60. If interested in adopting Hogarth please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n

Charlotte

was picked up from Guilford County Animal Services last month. Rumor has it that she would escape from her former living arrangement and wander down to the local school where the children would graciously share their lunches. Now settled into her foster home, Charlotte is enjoying a much healthier lifestyle. This sweet piggy is dropping weight and becoming much more comfortable. Charlotte loves to lounge in the sun and wander around the yard with her foster piggy brother. If you are interested in having Charlotte join your farm please fill out an application online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

is a 13 year old standard donkey that came to us as a stray picked up by animal control. He is very sweet and really enjoys having his ears scratched. Currently he is out with a small herd of horses and gets along with everyone. Our vet recommends that Paco have his grass intake limited and would do best in a dry lot. If you are interested in having Paco join your herd please fill out an application online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Pepper is a very sweet rabbit that came to us from Guilford County Animal Services. He loves to play with his wooden toys, hop around and eat his veggies. Elvira

Trixie

is a one year old domestic shorthair. She came to us from a local shelter where she was dropped off as a stray. Getting this picture was a challenge! All Elvira wanted to do was rub against us and the camera. Cuddling and purring are her favorite pastime. Elvira is just looking for someone to adopt her and give her a new home to enjoy. Could she possibly be the kitty you have been wanting for your new pet? Photo courtesy of Defy the Eye Pet Photography.

is a 6 year old Domestic Short Hair. She was found as a stray and after much searching the rescuers could not locate the owner. Trixie was microchipped and the chip was still registered to us so we took her in. She is a little shy at first but will warm up to you with a little coaxing and will soon become your best friend. Trixie just wants a second chance and a good loving home.

Daffodil is a big ball of fur and love. She was surrendered to a local shelter and we decided to take Daffodil into our rescue. Her fur is long and fluffy and she loves to be petted and will rub up against anything put in front of her. Daffodil is just looking for someone to love and cuddle with. Hershey

is a 5 year old American Cocker Spaniel mix. He was surrendered to a local shelter because his owner could no longer care for him. We decided to take Hershey into our rescue and find him a new home. If you could see Hershey he has this ripple effect in his fur that is very unique. Hershey would make a great addition to any family. Photo courtesy of Defy the Eye Pet Photography. Tucker

is a 3 year old Dachshund mix. We rescued him from a local shelter where Tucker had been surrendered by his owner due to health reasons. He is a small bundle of energy who likes to walk and play. When given the opportunity he will give you puppy kisses all over your face. Could Tucker be the new companion you have been looking for? Photo courtesy of Defy the Eye Pet Photography. Mack

is a 7 month old Shepherd mix puppy. Mack was brought in as a stray to a local shelter so we decided to take him into our rescue. He is a long-legged bundle of energy. Being a puppy he could probably use a little training. He will play until he runs out of energy and then settle down for an afternoon nap. If you are looking for a puppy to add to your family Mack could be the one! Photo courtesy of Defy the Eye Pet Photography. Call SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 for more information. n

Niobe.

Those ears!!! Niobe is a 4 year old Shepherd mix. A single pregnant mom at the shelter, she had her puppies in our rescue and they have found homes. After everything she has been through, she is shy and slow to trust. Her family will need to be patient with her, and understand that she sometimes needs her space. Niobe has a very gentle soul, and despite her fear she has never even offered to growl or bite. She generally gets along well with other dogs and is fine with cats, but would do best in a quiet home with no young children. Niobe is nervous on leash and in public, so she needs a securely fenced yard. Adoption donation $200. Little Mama.

Isn’t

she cute?! Little Momma Kitty was pulled from Davidson County Animal Shelter after she was surrendered giving birth with a kitten stuck, (she had emergency surgery in which 2 fetuses were removed.) Still just a baby herself at about a year old she is completely recovered and ready for her very own furever home! She is incredibly sweet, loves attention, gets along with cats and dogs and will be someone’s amazing companion. Adoption fee is $75 or $125 for two as kittens do much better in pairs. Please email felinefriendsnc@gmail.com for an adoption application. n

Denny

was born into a small feral colony in the woods behind Sam’s Club. His mama kept him and siblings well-hidden until they were about 4 months old. Denny is a beautiful gray mackerel tabby. He is also very sweet and loves to play. He does really well around other kitties. He loves to be loved on and rubbed but is still a little uncertain about being picked up. Denny was diagnosed at 5 months with mild Cerebellar Hypoplasia, or “wobble kitty” syndrome. He leads a very normal life and isn’t really affected by it, just a little wobbly. Adoption fee is $75 or $125 for two as kittens do much better in pairs. Please email felinefriendsnc@gmail.com for an adoption application. n

Yonah.

Hi, I’m Yonah (pronounced Ya-na). I am eight years old, and in great health. I am extremely sweet and loving and enjoy chin rubs and being petted. I am very lively, playful and love toy mice. I will play with a laser pointer or just about any toy you give me. I am accustomed to being the queen of the household, and have spent a lot of time as the only cat. I have been around an older male cat, and have done OK with that. I have never been around dogs or small children. I love food! Food is the way to my heart. I am spayed, current on shots, FeLV/FIV negative, and microchipped. Meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Penelope.

When I was lost and alone on a cold, dark night, a kind lady heard me crying and took me in. She couldn’t keep me, so she called AARF to find me a loving home. AARF calls me “Penelope”, but I have a secret name. If you choose me, I will come when you call me “Ginger”. If you choose me, I will sit in your lap, snuggle your neck, purr in your ear; and, if you allow, I will sleep at your feet. I am very sweet, affectionate and love to play. I’m used to sharing with other cats, so it would be fun to have playmates. My favorite toys are tennis balls, jingle balls, and bottle caps. I am a very good kitty, born June 2016, spayed and up-to-date on shots. Meet many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. I’m reaching out to you for help because you need to fix this situation for me immediately. I am 3-4 years old, already spayed, up-to-date on all of my vaccinations, and microchipped. You can rescue me for only $25 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Please call 336-357-0805 for more information. n

Maude is just adorable! What a sweet senior girl. She was dumped at a very high kill shelter for being “too old” (maybe 13 or 14?). We think she is “an oldie, but a Goodie”! Her vet report was “very good”, and she would love to find her Retirement Home. Could you make room for this wonderful little 22 pound dog? Beauty is just

Meet Jade, a beautiful 4 year old bi-color girl, who was surrendered to the Duplin County Animal Shelter. She was very scared and GSRA just couldn’t let her sit in there any longer. Jade is house-trained, crate-trained, leash-trained, rides well in the car, gets along with other dogs, knows sit and is eager to learn more manners. She is initially shy, but warms up quickly as you earn her trust. Jade is looking for a family who will help her grow into the wonderful girl she knows she is meant to be.

that! This sweet little Jack Russell mix was surrendered because her owner went into Assisted Living. Beauty is only about 15 pounds and about 9 -10 years old. Her health is great and she is friendly with people and other dogs. Please send an email to Juliet’s House Rescue at rfjg2903@bellsouth.net Juliet’s House Rescue for more information about Beauty and how to make her your newest family member. n

Mare, also known as Atascocita Mare, and what a little trouble maker I am! I love to get all the other Greyhounds stirred up and running in big circles. I’m only 4-1/2 years old, so acting like an imp comes naturally. With large, intelligent ears and a beautiful, fawn colored coat, I am a gorgeous little girl. We could celebrate my July 14th birthday together if you adopt me. Greyhound Friends of NC
