ON THE COVER: Austin was adopted from Davidson County Animal Shelter. He suddenly became extremely sick and the owner’s vet did not know what was wrong. His owner exhausted his funds trying to help him, and finally surrendered him back to the shelter as a last resort, hoping they could save him. The shelter reached out to Ruff Love. He had a high fever, could barely walk, would not eat, and was hunched over in severe pain. Our vet said it was an infection or possibly meningitis. After several weeks of care he got better and returned to his owners, but after two months became sick again. He went back on the same meds and has done well for three months. His owner felt it would be better if we found him a home. Contact Ruff Love Rescue: www.ruffloverescue.com/adopt, if interested.

Vet’s Corner Dr. Cecilia Ho, DVM Dr. Cecilia Ho is a graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. She decided to specialize in feline medicine two years into private practice as she found feline medicine to be more challenging and rewarding. She currently shares her home with five cats- all of which have her trained to their beck and call.

THE LITTERBOX -

Best Friend or Ticking Time-Bomb?

W

e’ve all been there before. The litterbox is spotless (to our eyes and nose), you’ve scooped diligently this morning before leaving for work and yet kitty has left a nice little “gift” on the carpet, in the middle of the dining-room for the second day in a row. What could have gone wrong? Why don’t you like your litterbox anymore you ask your cat imploringly? You had bought the litter on sale. So it was a little dusty with a strong perfume scent, but it had been on sale! Even though we may chuckle to ourselves and nod our heads in commiseration, litterbox avoidance has serious consequences. It is still the most common reason why cats are surrendered to animal shelters. Because of their history of litterbox avoidance, most of them are deemed unadoptable and are euthanized. Hopefully the following information will help clear up some of the misunderstanding between cats and litterboxes.

Oh, it’s “THINK” outside the box!

Firstly, cats like consistency. If you have a litter type and brand that your cat is using faithfully - DO NOT CHANGE IT! Resist the temptation of buying a litter that is on sale if it’s different from the one that you’re using. Don’t be tempted when you see a bag of litter at the store that says your cat will love it. Chances are your cat will hate it and show its displeasure by leaving another “present” on the diningroom carpet. Most cats prefer unscented, clumping litter. These types of litter are usually very fine textured and are highly absorbent. This translates into a material that won’t hurt your cat’s paws while it’s digging and standing in the litterbox. It also means that urine wicks away quickly so it won’t clump the cat’s fur and make it unpleasant to urinate in the litterbox. The substrate type doesn’t matter. It can be clay, pine, corn etc. as long as it’s a litter that your cat uses consistently (see preceeding paragraph). Cats also prefer litterboxes without covers. The litterbox should also be long and wide enough for the cat to fully stand in and be able to turn around without flipping on its head. The sides of the box should just be high enough to allow your cat easy access. This is especially important for older cats that suffer from arthritis. The litterbox should be placed in a quiet area of the house with little foot traffic. It is also important that your cat can get to the box without having to run through an obstacle course. Multi-level homes should ideally have a litterbox on each level of the house. This is especially true as your cat ages and has a harder time getting around. There should be sufficient litterboxes for every cat in the house. The rule of thumb is one litterbox for each cat plus one extra. In multi-cat households it’s important to place the boxes in different locations within the house. Separating the boxes rather than grouping them in one area allows the more submissive and shy cats to use the litterbox without being bullied by the more dominant cats. Finally litterbox maintenance is critical for a happy household with a cat. All boxes should be scooped at least once daily, preferably twice. All the boxes should also be cleaned and the litter changed at least once weekly. Litterboxes should be washed and cleaned with a mild detergent (non-scented Ivory dish soap works well), rinsed and dried before fresh litter is added. This point cannot be stressed enough. Consider scooping the litterbox the equivalent of flushing the toilet. Would you want to use a toilet that hasn’t been flushed in two, three or four days? If the answer is no and hopefully it is, then neither does your cat. These are just a few pointers that may help you keep your cat happy with its litterbox. If the litterbox avoidance persists despite your best efforts please call your veterinarian for help immediately. Your cat may have a serious medical problem. Do not wait. The longer the problem continues, the more difficult it will be to resolve.

Saves the Ones, No One Else Will

by Carol Moeser

Ruff Love Rescue is doing all they can to help make Apollo’s every day the best day ever. Sue says“We cannot save his life, but we can make sure his last days and weeks are the best he’s ever known.” (Photo by Heather Mays)

A

pollo was a stray at a local shelter. His face was extremely swollen and painful. The shelter workers thought he’d been bitten by a snake. They were going to euthanize him to end his suffering, but they called Ruff Love first. We immediately brought him to our vet. Apollo had a severe infection, internal parasites, and was heartworm positive. We hoped that he would recover, but sadly, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and has tumors in his nasal cavity that will spread. Medicine helps to manage his condition and he goes to work every day with our founder, Sue Rogers. In spite of all he’s been through, his tail wags constantly. Apollo does not know a stranger, he attends Ruff Love events where he loves and is loved by Jaelyn everyone. Ruff Love is doing all they can to make every day he has the best day ever. We cannot save his life, but we can make sure his last days and weeks are the best times he has ever known. Jaelyn was shot multiple times, probably by a shotgun. She suffered for several days before she was surrendered to Ruff Love. Her shoulder and front leg were shattered

12

and the vet had to amputate her leg. She survived the surgery but was anemic and filled with parasites which made recovery more difficult. Today, she is doing great! She has adjusted well to life on three legs and she is a happy, sweet girl that loves everyone! She is looking for her forever home. Apollo and Jaelyn are two of the many dogs that Ruff Love has saved from lives of pain and misery, starvation or death. We take the dogs that other rescues can’t or won’t – severely injured dogs, dogs with painful infected mange, heartworm positive dogs, dogs that were neglected and starved nearly to death, dogs with huge tumors and hernias left untreated for years, and far too many dogs with cancer. We take the dogs that have no other chance but us, the ones that are left behind. Founded by Sue Rogers in 1999, Ruff Love Rescue is a nokill, 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization that is completely funded by donations, and run entirely by volunteers. Ruff Love is also a licensed Dept. of NC Agriculture private animal shelter. We have grown tremendously over the last 17 years. In 2015, we adopted out over 400 dogs! Our dogs stay in foster homes where they learn to live in a home environment, possibly for the first time. They are socialized with other dogs and pets in the household, making it easier Freckles to match the right dog to the

They are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped and on heartworm preventative. Routine vetting for a healthy dog adds up; the care that some of our dogs require can run into the thousands of dollars. We get calls, emails and messages daily asking for help, and it never stops because there is always another life to save. There is a lot of heartbreak in rescue but when we see a happy, healthy dog living in a loving, forever home, it is more than worth it. Our cat division, Feline Friends of Ruff Love Rescue, focuses on finding forever homes for current fosters and helping control overpopulation by spaying/neutering. They have saved many cats that no one else would. “Mama Kitty” was abandoned at the shelter with 3 newborn kittens and one kitten stuck in the birth canal. She lost two of her kittens in the ordeal but she and the surviving two are now available for adoption. “Rocco” is paralyzed from being shot by a pellet gun; he is incontinent and needs daily care. He is a forever cat. Sharkie and Boo were rescued from a local shelter. They both were infected with panleukopenia; Sharkie barely survived after 6 days at the emergency vet; sadly, Boo did not make it. Sharkie is ready for his forever family. Lyra was dumped in a neighborhood at 8-9 months old; she is still shy but quickly warming up and is also looking for her family. We are so grateful for all of our volunteers and foster homes, we could not save all the animals we do without your dedication and passion. We especially want to thank our supporters; without the financial support we cannot continue our mission to “save the ones no one else will.” If you’re interested in adopting, fostering or volunteering, please let us know! We always need more fosters! Fostering helps a dog become more adoptable by learning skills needed to be a part of the family – housetraining, socialization and leash walking enhance a dog’s desirability. When you foster for Ruff Love, you provide the food, love and guidance. All vet costs are paid by us. We have

lots of opportunities for volunteers – we hold adoption fairs at least once a month and many fundraising events throughout the year; we rely on donations to continue to keep helping dogs in our community and surrounding areas.

We are so grateful for all of our volunteers and foster homes; we could not save all the animals we do without your dedication and passion.

Pepper is a female Rat Terrier/Jack Russell mix found running around neighborhoods. She is estimated to be around three years old. She came to us heartworm positive but has been treated and is now healthy and ready for her new forever home! She was definitely someone’s house dog as she is makes herself at home and also loves to ride in the car! She is very attached to her humans so a home where she would be the only dog would be best for her (although she does get along with most other dogs). Pepper also Spay Stokes gets along with cats. She has been spayed, up-to-date on all vaccinations, heartworm negative and on monthly prevention, and will be microchipped before adoption. She walks well on a leash, knows how to sit and loves to give lots of kisses! Please email us at: arsc2004@gmail.com. Her adoption fee is $150.00

Vet’s Corner

Dr. Kelli Paschal was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in biology at Middle Tennessee State University and has been a member of the United Sates Army National Guard since 2006. In 2014 she graduated with her Doctoral degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She moved east Kelli Paschal, DVM to North Carolina where she Southwoods Animal Hospital currently works at Southwoods Animal Hospital. She has a strong interest in internal medicine and surgery. In her spare time, she loves to play guitar and mandolin, participate in outdoor activities, and spend time with friends and family, including her furry family members, Moose and Oliver.

The Coughing Dog Most dogs, at some point in their lives, develop a cough; but some are more significant than others. The list of causes for coughing is a very long one. Many factors contribute including age, breed, clinical signs, and other problems that your vet finds during the physical exam.

THE RESPIRATORY TRACT KENNEL COUGH One of the more common causes for coughing in an otherwise healthy pet is infectious tracheobronchitis, or “kennel cough.” This is caused by an opportunistic bacterium, Bordetella bronchiseptica, which often times will invade when a viral infection makes the airway susceptible. These respiratory pathogens are easily transmitted between dogs and are also commonly transmitted in areas where many dogs are housed close together (i.e., vet hospitals, boarding facilities, and dog parks). The vaccine, while very protective, does not prevent infection so if your dog has been boarded or has come into contact with unvaccinated dogs, consult your vet right away. COLLAPSING TRACHEA Some dogs with more of a ‘honking’ cough may have a collapsing trachea. The trachea is made up of c-shaped cartilage rings that are usually rigid and hold the airway open. These rings can weaken, and, over time, the airway narrows (collapses) making it difficult for air to pass through. While the exact cause of tracheal collapse is unknown, certain breeds are more likely to have this problem (primarily Yorkies and other toy breeds) indicating a possible genetic link. The cough, as well as blue-tinged gums, labored breathing, and exercise intolerance may be observed or worsened by excitement, eating, drinking, tracheal irritants (smoke or dust), obesity, exercise, and hot and humid weather. In many cases, radiographs (x-rays) of the chest can confirm a collapsing trachea as well as rule out other issues. Most cases of tracheal collapse are treated with cough suppressants, bronchodilators, and most importantly WEIGHT LOSS to help decrease respiratory effort. PNEUMONIA Sometimes a cough can be more significant. A deep, productive cough in combination with lethargy, anorexia, and fever can mean your dog has pneumonia. Along with these initial signs, your vet may hear abnormal or absent lung sounds in certain areas which

16

may mean that portions of the lung are filled with fluid, inflammatory cells, or organisms. Pneumonia can be caused by many different things including viruses, bacteria, fungus, parasites, or from aspirating fluid after vomiting. Bloodwork and radiographs can help determine how severely your pet is affected. Depending on the severity, your vet may recommend hospitalization and supportive care, or antibiotics and bronchodilators with monitoring at home.

THE HEART In addition to your dog’s respiratory tract, your dog’s heart can also be the cause of a cough. For many reasons the heart can lose effective pumping ability, or it can grow larger, creating physical pressure on the airway. Two common causes of heart disease and failure are heartworm infection and degenerative heart disease.

HEARTWORMS One cause of heart disease is infection with heartworms. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes that inject immature larval stages of heartworms in the body. Over time these larval stages will migrate into the bloodstream where they eventually grow into adult worms in the vessels of the heart. There they can reproduce until many adult worms are present and obstruct the flow of blood, making the heart work much harder to circulate blood. Eventually the heart will not be able to keep up. Initially you may notice a decrease in exercise, increase in respiratory effort or rate, or the cough. Because early stages of heartworms are susceptible to preventatives, giving your pet heartworm prevention year-round is a very easy way to ensure he or she does not succumb to this terrible disease. DEGENERATIVE HEART DISEASE Has your veterinarian heard a murmur in your dog? A murmur occurs when blood flows in an abnormal direction. Younger dogs may have innocent murmurs that resolve as they age. If the murmur is heard after 16 weeks of age, this could mean a congenital problem is present. In older dogs, murmurs are more commonly caused by degenerative valvular disease, in which the valves wear out, become “leaky” and allow some blood to flow backward. This does not always mean that your dog will develop heart failure. However, the heart will have to work harder to push blood forward causing it to get larger. Also, over time, the heart may not be able to pump effectively, causing fluid to build up in the body or lungs. You may notice coughing, exercise intolerance, increased respiratory rate, or pale gums. Sometimes these can be emergency situations requiring oxygen and hospitalization. Ideally, radiographs of the chest should be performed to see if the heart, vessels, and lungs appear normal. When heart disease or failure is diagnosed in your dog, medications can help reduce fluid accumulation, reduce blood pressure, and reduce work-load of the heart muscle. Unfortunately, there is no cure for heart disease in pets but with proper management and monitoring, your dog can enjoy good quality time doing all the normal things he or she enjoys. Though coughing is a normal defense mechanism, it can be the first symptom of a more important disease process in your dog. In addition to some of the diseases mentioned above, there are many other causes. It’s important to check with your veterinarian when you notice coughing to prevent something simple from becoming more serious.

It’s Time To Hide The Litter Box For The Holidays!

You will soon be having guests show up at your door and there will be that ugly, messy cat litter box sitting on the floor for all to see!

The Out of Sight Litter Box cabinet system hides the litter box, and a lot more. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to not have to clean up all that tracked litter from all around your home too? This product is designed to hide and contain cat litter mess all within the cabinet, plus with the litter box raised on a second shelf, cleaning is easy on you. Just walk up, open the top lid, scoop and walk away. With this patented design your cat hops down and its paws open naturally so all the litter falls out and is trapped by the Trax-Turf. No more litter tracking. If you have a dog this cabinet keeps dogs (and small children) out of the litter pan too. Included with your choice of White, Maple, Oak, Mahogany,Walnut or Black cabinet, are two (2) High-Sided litter boxes, the Trax-Turf pads, a scoop & an odor absorber. Visit the Out of Sight Litter Box website, & see how this Made-In-America product will change your litter box problems. www.outofsightlitterbox.com

Grooming Your Pet

Paws for a Moment

A

By: Hayley Keyes, NCMG, ICMG, CMCG

fter a long day of standing on my feet- they are killing me. I’m lucky I wear shoes. As Pet Owners, we need to think of the feet and pads of our pets, as we do our own. Although your pet has thick pads to protect him from the surface that he walks on, issues can still occur with his feet and nails. Fungal problems from grass can cause pads to become itchy and dry. Asphalt, dirt and gravel can cause pads to split and crack. Think about asphalt and cement in the summer, ask yourself if you would like to walk barefoot on hot pavement. Or in the winter time, salt. Unattended nails can curl up into the pads causing holes in the pads and long toenails can cause the foot to slowly deform, causing structural problems and arthritis. As cats age they too have foot issues, nails thicken making them unable to pull their claws back into the foot. Think of your nails growing so long that they scrub and rub on your shoes. I know when I go to get a pedicure I cringe. Many dogs have sensitive feet so they dislike having their feet touched, never mind just clipping nails. A buildup of mats between the pads causes discomfort and creates a home to insects. You can help your groomer and your pet by gently touching and massaging the feet daily. Take the time to work with your pet by lifting his foot up and massaging each toe and between the pads. Wiping feet daily with a waterless shampoo helps clean the Quick feet and takes away some bacteria and fungus. Start Cut Here with placing your pet on a bathmat on a table or floor – giving a paw massage. When doing this, touch each toe, then toe nail—don’t 45° forget the dewclaws. Also, look at the cuticle of each nail, is it red, swollen or dry? Several places have products that are good to use on the pads to help protect and heal them. We use ‘Paw Rub’ and it contains aloe, vitamin E and Shea Butter. After your pet has gotten used to this you can introduce a nail clipper or grinder. First let him listen to the sounds and smell. Then start touching the foot with the nail trimmer or grinder, don’t use it, just let him get used to the equipment. You need to learn how to use these tools properly! To start, find a small twig about ¼˝ to ½˝ wide and a foot long. Use your nail trimmers to clip the twig, you can paint the twig with some lines so you know where you are clipping. Remember every dog and cat has a

18

vein (quick) in his nail, cut too much and it will bleed. The longer the nail -the longer the vein (quick). There is no easy way to tell where the vein is, unless the dog has white nails and you can see it. It is best to start slow and just tip the nails. As you learn to cut, add a person! Have someone come from behind you as you are clipping and move the twig, this movement will be a lot like your pet moving or pulling his leg. Now the Grinder— start learning to grind the twig so that you can hold the grinder to the twig without tapping it. Round off the ends. Repeat the above with the paint and the person from behind. Pets know when you are nervous, so it is best to stay calm and collected. Remember practice makes perfect! When starting to use these tools on your pet—a few things to remember—only tip the nails until you can clip more. With the grinder always pull back hair from the feet, ears and tail. You do not want the grinder getting caught in the hair or in an ear. I recommend that you use a hoodie or towel around the face and use a stocking on the feet so only the nails stick out. Lastly you should ask your groomer or vet about your pet’s feet and nails. Just as with humans—your feet and their feet are important, so take care of them! About the author...

Princess enjoys playing with stuffed animals, playing fetch and tugging on ropes. She is very loyal, friendly and not at all aggressive. mix with abounding energy and love. He’s a happy pup who enjoys spending time with his people and lounging on the couch after a nice walk. R2 is comfortable on a leash with a harness but is still a big, strong boy who needs further leash training. He enjoys a good hike and strolls around the block. R2 does well by himself too. He’s housebroken and will stay entertained while you’re at work but jumps with joy to see you when you get back… literally. He’s not a huge fan of water and especially dislikes the dishwasher, the scariest monster of the house. R2 is a good boy who would be a wonderful addition to your loving family.

Wolverine.

I am a sweetie that loves to be around you! I will be so happy to see you when you come home from work that I will purr like crazy and rub up against you hoping you will want to pet and snuggle with me. I definitely will want to be in the same room with you laying in the warm sun or in my cat bed with my favorite mouse toy. I love to be brushed and play with toys on strings! Won’t you adopt me?

Don’t let the name fool you—he may have the furry characteristics of his comic hero namesake but Wolverine (ID #2452) is a sweet little Feist mix who loves to cuddle! He is a little fearful of strangers and does take a while to warm up to new people but once he does, he is very playful, active and will follow basic commands. He gets along very well with other dogs, seems to be a little afraid of cats and is fantastic with children! Wolfie does not like to be crated and will whine when left alone so he does need a family with plenty of together time to spare. He is not completely housebroken but his fosters are patiently working on getting him there. Wolverine would make a great addition to any family! Carra is litter box trained and ready for her own quiet home to call her own, preferably along with her brother Curtis!

ID#2428, is a handsome orange and white tabby who simply loves to lay around and quietly observe the goings on in the house. He may feel shy at first in a new environment but given the time, he’ll show you his true, beautiful inner colors. He’s certainly playful when he’s in the mood and he won’t hesitate to let you know it’s breakfast or dinner time with a handful of meows aimed at his best human. Hello! My name is Baby and I am 7 years old and currently weigh 16 lbs. I came in a couple of weeks ago weighing 18 lbs. and I am still very overweight. My foster mom is starving me (just kidding...although I think she is starving me) so that I will lose weight and feel so much better. I am spayed, up-to-date on shots and on heartworm preventative. I also had a dental. I came in with Killer who is now known as Keanu. We are very bonded so whoever adopts me will also have to adopt him. Our foster Chihuahua Rescue mom put us outside and we thought the world was coming to an end. We are both very friendly and love attention. She is excellent on the leash and loves walks. Adrienne is great with other dogs and would enjoy a companion dog. Adoption donation $100.

is a pretty Schnauzer or Poodle mix, who values time with her beloved family above all else. She is now a youthful, energetic 9 who needs plenty of good walks. She had a happy life until her family started having children and all that kiddie energy and unpredictability made her too nervous. She seeks an adults-only home. Jillian is reliably house-trained and knows her commands. She has separation anxiety and will follow you like a devoted shadow so needs a home in which someone is home a lot. She is friendly to all adults and wants to be an only dog in her new home. Jillian is 29 pounds. Adoption donation $125.

Charlotte. This little piggy wants to go Wee! Wee! Wee! all the way to a new home. Charlotte is a 6-year old Pot Bellied Pig picked up from Guilford County Animal Services. Rumor is, she would escape from her former living arrangement and wander down to the local school where the children would graciously share their lunches. This sweet girl is looking for a home that will help her strap on her walking shoes and get her to a healthier lifestyle. Visit www.reddogfarm.com to adopt this terrific pig!

n

Knox.

Christian & Grey These two sweet guys came to Red Dog Farm after they were found abandoned at a nearby private farm. Both Christian and Grey are very sweet but seem to be pretty timid since their world has been turned upside-down. These two gentlemen got their names affectionately because Grey was nicknamed 50 Pounds of Grey since they are large kitties! They are adjusting to their foster home at All Pets Considered well and enjoy being petted. Christian has beautiful eyes and striped coloring, while Grey looks like he is wearing a grey tuxedo with white mittens and socks! They were previously declawed before they came to us so each of them will need to go to homes as indoor kitties. Visit www.reddogfarm.com to adopt these handsome fellows! n

Clyde.

This debonair gentleman was originally surrendered to the animal shelter when his owners determined that they were actually allergic to him. He is a perfect gentleman with outstanding house manners. He is doing great in his foster home and is enjoying the life of luxury or at least the couch! Knox is getting along well with his new doggie sibling. He would love to find his forever owner to go on grand adventures with. In return, you will get the perfect companion ready to snuggle on the couch or meet up with some friends at the local dog friendly restaurant.

This sweet boy is a 4 year old chinchilla. Clyde just entered the Red Dog Farm program and has been getting lots of TLC in his foster home. He is blind in his right eye but it doesn’t stop him from being a sweet, outgoing playful boy. He needs a furever home that will spend lots of time including him as one of the family by letting him have lots of outside cage play and cuddle time.

If you have room in your heart and home for Knox, please visit us online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

If you are interested in adopting Clyde, fill out an application online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Izzy.

This beautiful horse came to us from Guilford County Animal Control when she and Layla (not shown) were abandoned by their owners. Izzy is a very sweet girl and is doing great in her foster home. Our volunteers groom her on a regular basis and she is happy to stand quietly. We have saddled and bridled her but Izzy seems rusty in the riding department. We will continue to work with her under saddle. Learn more or apply online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Frank. We are beginning to think that we should have named Frank “Beast” instead. This handsome fellow seems to have been forgotten by the general public. He has a good heart and soul but much like the Beast he is a little rough around the edges. He can be a little head strong and needs someone who won’t let him get away with much. He is eager to learn and please and has done well with his basic training. Frank is ready to find his true love. He would do best as an only dog with someone who is active as well as someone who just likes to relax. Could you be this “Beast’s” soul mate or rather his “Belle” or “Beau”? If interested, fill out an application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

She says he is very affectionate and delivers a kiss on demand Doberman Rescue of the Triad - sings/barks if he feels he’s not being petted enough. Bagheera

Ashton

is a 7 year old DSH cat with black fur. He is named after the panther in the movie Jungle Book. Bagheera was brought in because his owner could not medically care for him. He has been having a tough time with a skin condition that we are trying to clear up with proper medical treatment. There has been a huge improvement since he came to us! Aside from his medical problems, Bagheera is a sweetheart . He would probably want to be the king of his home and not have to share it with any other cat. Hopefully, someone would be willing to put Bagheera’s medical problems aside and give him the new home he so deserves.

was brought to us in a basket having been found in someone’s yard, The people brought him to us hoping we could find room to take him in. Though shy and still a little frightened of us, Ashton is coming around to letting us hold and cuddle him. He is approximately 6 weeks old and considered to be a Siamese breed. After proper vetting, Ashton will be ready to find a loving home.

Meet Bam.

Spunky.

If those beautiful eyes don’t draw you in, then his stellar personality will. Bam is a large, 11 year old cat with striking markings in shades of black, gold, and white. He is really a gorgeous cat with bold striped legs and unusual patterns on his body that remind you of the pattern on some reptiles. He is so full of love and affection; really just a big baby. He gets along beautifully with other kitties too. Bam was surrendered when a new member of his household was allergic to cats. He is now here awaiting his second chance at a fur-ever home. If you have room in your home and heart for a loving, talkative feline, then Bam is the kitty for you!

This adorable little guy is Spunky! He is a 9 year old, black and white, Shih Tzu. Spunky came to the SPCA of the Triad from Rockingham County Animal Shelter. He was rescued from a hoarding situation and did not have much contact with humans. Spunky has now come out of his shell and loves all the human attention he can get. He is looking for a warm lap to snuggle into in his second forever home. Come meet Spunky to see if he is a good fit for your heart and home.

Starlight,

bright... I wish I may, I wish I might... Find a home that loves me right! When her owners decided to move and not take her with them, Starlight found herself as a resident of the shelter. She is used to a quiet home with all the amenities that spoiled cats are accustomed to; not a noisy shelter where she has to share her space with other cats. Starlight is a low-maintenance girl that would fit nicely in a low-energy home as the only pet. Her adoption fee is $25; she is spayed, up-to-date on her vaccinations and, microchipped.

Spotlight on Break The Chain Kennel Kru Andrew meets Bumpy tethered at his home. Break the Chain Kennel Kru’s mission is working with underserved neighborhoods in Guilford County to become compliant with the new anti-tethering ordinance effective in September 2015

“A chained dog is a choked soul.” by Andrew Mayon

I

n 2014, Guilford County passed an important and needed anti-tethering ordinance that went into effect on September 1, 2015. The new law stated that unattended dogs may not be placed on a tether or be chained. The penalty for violating the statute was up to $500.00 per dog. When Guilford County began enforcing its anti-tethering law in September 2015, it had a profound impact on many families in the community, especially those in lower income areas. Facing fines up to $500 per dog, difficult decisions would have to be made; either construct a proper enclosure which could be costly or prohibited by a landlord, or surrender the family pet to the local animal shelter. In order to help improve dogs’ living conditions, a new volunteer group arose to meet the challenge to assist families in underserved parts of Greensboro and High Point become compliant with the new law. Enter Sylvia Mayon, founder of “Break the Chain Kennel Kru,” and her husband, Andrew. Both were already deeply involved in animal welfare causes: Sylvia serving on the Board of Directors of the Humane Society of the Piedmont and Andrew on the Board of Directors of the SPCA of the Triad. They both volunteered for Project B.A.R.K., a local organization

that assists families with low-cost spay and neutering, as well as providing free dog houses made from plastic barrels. On one outreach in November of 2015, the couple came across a Project B.A.R.K. family that was faced with surrendering their dog “Cash.” He was jumping over their four foot fence and could only be contained by being chained (he had already been neutered). His owners could not afford to build a six foot fence around their yard. Sylvia and Andrew looked at each other, and after a moment, Sylvia turned and asked, “If we can raise money to build Cash a kennel, will you accept our help?” With tears in her eyes, Cash’s mom said “Absolutely!” Upon arriving home from their meeting with Cash’s family, Sylvia immediately went to work privately contacting family and friends to help raise money for his kennel. In only four days, she raised enough funds to buy what they needed to help Cash. The following weekend, with the help of some friends and members of Cash’s family, they built his kennel. With excitement and plenty of tears of joy, everyone watched him happily frolic around his new enclosure after he was unchained. It was at that moment, the Mayons knew they had found their calling.

Another success, Cole (left) on his tether, before Break the Chain Kennel Kru arrived (middle), he’s loving his new kennel (far right)! 46

Bumpy (top left) relaxes in his new kennel, finally free of the chain. Some of the photos are our wonderful volunteers, without them nothing would be possible. Bottom right is our board of directors.

On March 31, 2016, Break the Chain Kennel Kru officially became recognized as a non-profit organization by the State of North Carolina. On June 3 2016, they received their IRS 501(c) (3) acceptance letter. The mission of the organization is “To work in under-served neighborhoods in Guilford County, NC; assisting families to become compliant with local anti-tethering ordinances by providing no-cost, chain link kennels with a tarp covering, enabling them to unchain their pet in a safe and secure enclosure. Furthermore, we provide education on spay/neutering as well as proper pet care. We have partnered with a local veterinarian, Dr Janine Oliver of Benessere Animal Hospital, offering affordable health care to the families we assist.” The organization, while still in its infancy, is already making an impact on the lives and families in Guilford County. While their specific mission is to help unchain dogs, they also help with some of the personal needs of the families they work with, like school supplies and toys for the children. With the help of its dedicated group of core volunteers, all of who work full-time, and its numerous donors known as “Krusaders”, Break the Chain Kennel Kru raised funds to build 21 kennels in only 11 months. This fall, the organization was selected as one of the recipients of “VF Serves Day,” in which employees of Greensboro based, VF Corporation go out into the community and volunteer doing various service projects. To qualify to be a Kennel Kru family - owners must be on some sort of government assistance, agree to have their pets spayed/ neutered, assist with the construction of their pet’s kennel, agree

to assist with the construction of another family’s kennel to “pay it forward”, agree to have regular health checkups with Dr. Oliver, agree to allow the organization to stop by every 4-6 weeks to help refresh the kennel and check on the dog’s well being.

“Andrew & Sylvia are thankful for their amazing team, shown here with some of their friends, who have, “Broken the Chain”! Break the Chain Kennel Kru operates solely on corporate and private donations. If you would like to become a “Krusader,” visit their website www.BTCKennelKru.org or “like” Facebook at www.facebook.com/BTCKennelKru. The organization would specifically benefit from automatic, monthly contributions. YOU can help “Break the Chain”! www.triadhappytails.com November 2016

Special Feature

My Three Sizes of Fluff Balls By Carol Reed

A

fter a very hard year, in which I lost all four of my rescued, aging pets, two cats and two Greyhounds, my granddaughter and I visited “Animal Rescue and Foster Program” or ARFP, in Greensboro. I had seen this adorable blue-gray long-haired kitten, Vivian, in Happy Tails. The kitten seemed to have no bones and just melted into what ever position I put her. I chose her. My granddaughter chose a pure white, short-hair named Molly who had a very loud purr. The two kittens grew up together until Luke arrived. He showed up at my granddaughter’s house and snuggled his way into her mother’s heart. He is the third sibling in my trio. A very loving, long-haired, white and gray cat, he needs my lap any time I sit. Vivian, at only 7 pounds, is very gentle and a wonderful jumper. Molly is somewhere in the middle and very shy with strangers. All the young cats play, chase, and clean each other daily. They love each other. When I go away, I hire a house sitter for them. I have discovered that they don’t like it when I leave them. I tell the house sitter to just make a list of everything they break. So far, the tally is two bureau lamps, a cloth angel from my sister, a glass picture frame, and a mug made for me by a high school boyfriend. When I call my granddaughter, I usually begin the conversation with “Guess what your cats did this time.” At our church yard sale, I bought a second-hand cat tree. Vivian was the first to get to the top. Luke just looked up. He

didn’t think he could climb that high. Molly was scared of the new smells. Now they race each other to the top and paw at each other from above, or jump from the upper levels on top of each other. They wrestle, squeal and hiss. But since nobody ever bleeds, I guess they are just playing. Sometimes Luke decides he wants Vivian’s sleeping spot, so he sits on her. I’m not sure how such a tiny thing can breathe with this giant on top of her, but she puts up with it. Then she either attacks him or moves to another place. Recently, all three cats joined me in the Poconos at our lake house, where they caught bugs, watched chipmunks and birds through large screens, and stared in awe at bears and deer. One evening when I pulled down the stairs to the attic to let them practice chasing up and down, something “fell” out. That bat swooped low and high, trying to find a way out into the night where it could catch mosquitoes and those nasty biting flies. Vivian can leap half way between the floor and ceiling. At sixteen pounds, Luke tried hard, but couldn’t get much air. Molly in the middle finally brought down the bat on my bed, where I plopped a fishing net over it to get it out of the house. All three cats just sat on my bed, watching the bat chatter and screech under the net. Some weekends when my granddaughter comes over, she wants to visit the kittens at ARFP. The first time this happened, I felt the need to tell her very firmly that three cats were enough. We would just play with the other kittens. Now, we go often to hold kittens and play with them. The last time we visited she found some very cuddly puppies that fell asleep in her lap. We even left for lunch and then came back for the afternoon. There were tears in her eyes when we had to go home. She hasn’t asked to go since. Her parents have an old cat and no place to keep a dog. I think she was in love with those puppies, but knew there was nothing to be done about it. She is brave. During the lonely months after my four older pets died, but before I adopted my three sizes of fluff balls, I had less cleaning to do. There was no fur on the sofa. I could sleep late frequently. Now I have to scoop litter boxes, brush three cats each morning, and vacuum much more often. Cats think mornings come early and want to play when I would rather sleep. They keep me laughing and happy. And I am not the least bit bored. Adopting cats or Greyhounds is the way to go. www.triadhappytails.com November 2016

Rainbow Bridge Designs Being a pet parent is one of the biggest joys one can experience. They are our faithful companions in times of good or bad. When we have to say, “Goodbye”, it can be one of the most painful and sad moments to endure. We often save their pictures and toys to remember them by, but what if we could truly honor our beloved pet by carrying their memory with us? Meet Rainbow Bridge Designs. Born from an intense love of animals combined with deep sympathy and empathy for those suffering such a profound loss, Kim Steinbruck decided to turn her talent for creating glass jewelry and accessories into a company that creates a lasting memorial for our pets. It all started when Kim began to think more and more about the possibility of a different and more personal way to remember and honor her own pets after they had passed on to the Rainbow Bridge. She started creating fused glass jewelry that contained a small portion of ash from her beloved pets as a way to keep them close in a beautiful way. Kim notes, “Our pets deserve more than a hat box as their final resting place. I gave it much thought and came up with endless possibilities Unique, custom, hand-crafted gifts different colors of glass to match their colors, varied shapes or styles for the pet lover on your Christmas List from pendants to cuff links, the addition of special charms, etc. I began If you or someone you know has lost a pet they dearly love, our imagining how special each piece could be. As these ideas continued to mementoes will keep the beloved companion close to the heart until flow, Rainbow Bridge Designs was born.” you are reunited. Please go online and see our selections. Rainbow Bridge Designs creates each custom piece one at a time and the same artist works on it through the entire process. Your pet’s ash is carefully measured and mixed with the colored glass for your special design and it allows the beauty of your pet to live on through something very special made just for you. Rainbow Bridge Designs also believes in giving back and they 803.448.4414 currently have relationships with several animal rescues to donate www.KeepPetsClose.com 10% back to them for all orders originating from their members/contacts. Kim welcomes these partnerships and will gladly speak with other interested rescues and shelters. Kim says, “Losing a pet is a difficult ordeal for everyone. Our goal is to help you through your grief by giving you a special way to honor and remember them.”
