WANTED: Fur-Ever Homes Please help Dog Days find loving homes Ranger for Oden, Trixie and Ranger.

Ranger is a little over 1 year old. He is a black Lab / Terrier mix who loves to play

with other dogs, as well as play in the water. He is very sweet and social, but despite all of his great qualities his owners could no longer care for him.

Trixie

Trixie is playful and gets along with everyone—Dog or Human. She

already knows some basic commands and is eager to learn more with a new loving family. She’s always ready for a car ride or to go on a walk and loves to curl up for cuddles whenever you are. Trixie loves to give big kisses and is so well-mannered that we know she is going to find a loving home soon.

Oden

Oden was surrendered to the SPCA of the Triad by his owner

in hopes of finding him a better life. His original owner was a young college student who worked 2 jobs and did not have any time for Oden…and that wasn’t fair. As hard as that decision was to make, he knew Oden deserved more! Oden needs an owner who will be involved with him—it doesn’t matter if it’s watching the game on the couch or out on the town for a walk. Oden is playful, well-mannered and is going to make someone one heck of a wingman.

Ranger, Trixie and Oden are available through the SPCA of the Triad and are being fostered at Dog Days. Spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccines, each dog comes with a 20 day daycare pass to Dog Days. Drop by Dog Days and meet them today.

•D oggie daycare and overnight boarding • Online webcam to watch your dog • Offering In-House Training on Wednesday nights • Three separate playrooms based on size of dog - small, medium and large • Full-service grooming

Vet’s Corner Dr. Colleen Crozier joined the staff of University Animal Hospital of Greensboro in June. She received a double major in Zoology and Poultry Science (summa cum laude), followed by her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from N. C. State. While she was attending school, Dr. Crozier participated in several veterinary mission trips to the Navajo Nation and the Yup’ik tribes of Alaska. Her interests include small animal physical therapy and rehabilitation, developing urban poultry medicine, training her poodle puppy Ollie and baking. She makes coop calls upon request.

BIOSECURITY Biosecurity is one of the most important ways to keep your flock healthy and free of disease. There are three categories of biosecurity we should remember: 1. People: We can unknowingly transmit diseases between poultry. Wearing different shoes when working with your chickens and having visitors disinfect their shoes can help prevent our bringing in diseases. 2. Poultry: When introducing new birds into your flock, it is important to quarantine the new birds for at least 30 days. Quarantine means that the new birds have absolutely no contact with your established flock. 3. Wildlife: Wildlife can transmit diseases to your chickens and can also be predators so it is important to protect your flock from them.

DISEASE

The Urban Chicken It may surprise you to hear “cluck-clucks” coming from your neighbor’s backyard but more and more people have backyard chicken flocks. With the rise in awareness of where our food comes from and eating locally grown food, it has become popular to keep chickens in order to have fresh eggs.

Top 5 Concerns for Backyard Poultry HOUSING Proper housing for your chickens is important for their health and laying status. Chicken coops should provide shelter from predators. Coops should have good quality litter that is changed regularly. Nest boxes should be low to the ground and in a dark area of the coop. Chicken coops should also have perches so that your chickens can perch off the ground.

FOOD AND WATER As with any animal, chickens need fresh food and water. Fresh water should be given every day. Chickens should be fed a well balanced diet that has been formulated by a poultry nutritionist.

• Zoonotic diseases are diseases that can be transferred from one species of animal (ex. chickens) to humans. Chickens can transmit Salmonella and Campylobacter so it is important to always wash your hands carefully after handling your chickens, eggs or manure. • There are many infectious diseases (viruses, bacteria, and fungi) that birds can transmit to each other. Make sure to look at your chickens daily in order to find birds that may be sick. If you think your chickens are sick, it is important to have your chicken seen by a veterinarian. • Chickens can get external and internal parasites. Chickens should be dewormed about twice a year to prevent infestations of parasites.

Belle, the chicken, enjoying a stroll around the yard. More and more people are keeping backyard chicken flocks today.

AIR Like humans, chickens need fresh air. It is important to have plenty of air circulating throughout your chicken coop in order to keep your chickens healthy. Decreased air can cause ammonia levels to build up in the coops, which causes birds to have difficulty breathing. It can also cause the humidity to rise in the coops, which may allow mold to grow. 10

Cover Story

Burlington Animal Services:

A Change for the Better By Laura Michel Program Coordinator, Burlington Animal Services

L

et’s face it; most of us don’t really like change. It comes with uncertainty, risk and perhaps some fear. If you’ve ever changed jobs or careers, moved to a new city or made any life-changing decisions, you know what that feels like. It’s much easier to settle and do things the same old way you’ve always done them, right? Yet change is the one constant in our lives and it becomes necessary if you desire a different and better outcome. This is where Burlington Animal Services found itself a couple of years ago; we needed to make some changes to achieve a better outcome. Prior to 2014, our yearly intake of animals was 6,300 and higher. Our live release of placeable animals (adoption, return to owner and rescue transfer) was 28% or less, and our euthanasia rate was consistently around 75%. These figures are not out of the ordinary for many shelters similar to ours, but that doesn’t make it acceptable. Clearly, our mode of operation was not working or leading to better results. In early 2014, Burlington Animal Services began a transformation of how we operate; we implemented changes in policies and procedures, added new programs, opened the doors to new community partnerships, and became more accessible and transparent to everyone. Strong leadership and stepping outside our comfort zone are to credit for the tremendous progress we’ve achieved.

Rex

New Programs

In addition to our new partnerships, we have developed some new programs. In 2015, we created a foster program and are fortunate to have several individuals who generously open their homes to nursing mothers, sick or injured animals that need extra care, litters of orphaned kittens and puppies, and dogs and cats that are not doing well in the stressful shelter environment. These volunteers are extremely important and make an immense difference in the outcome for these animals. A few years ago, these animals likely would not have had a So, what have we done? One immediate and significant change second chance. But now, they have every chance. A foster program is was developing positive relationships with community and placement essentially an extension of the shelter and it helps by freeing up space partners. Working together with the Humane Society of Alamance and resources for other animals. Fosters are always needed, so if you County and other local and regional animal rescue organizations has cannot adopt but want to help, please consider becoming a foster for been a game-changer. These groups play a critical role in assisting us your shelter or local rescue organization. by transferring animals from our facility, placing them into their foster We also offer a ‘foster-to-adopt’ program. This is when an individual programs and using their networks and resources to find adopters for wants to adopt a kitten or puppy that is too young or small for spay/ final placement. In 2013, 68 animals went to rescue groups. In 2015, 676 animals were pulled by our numerous rescue partners! It is amazing neuter surgery, or an animal that may need some continued medical care. The adopter takes the pet home and cares for it as their own, to see what happens when we all work together for the same cause. but agrees to return at scheduled intervals for weight checks, booster Working with and supporting organizations dedicated to helping pet shots and exams. When the animal reaches the necessary size, or is owners keep their pets has also proved beneficial. Friends of Mebane deemed healthy for surgery, we schedule an appointment and finalize Animals (FoMA) assists pet owners who demonstrate financial need the adoption when the spay/neuter procedure is complete. Puppies with pet food, building fences and shelter to untether their dogs, and and kittens are extremely vulnerable to disease and illness in a shelter some medical needs. Animal Kind’s $20 Fix program assists lowenvironment. The foster-to-adopt program enables them to leave the income households with getting their pets spayed or neutered. When shelter, live in their new home environment and begin bonding with individuals are able to keep their pets at home and not give them away or surrender them to the shelter, everyone benefits. their new family, and frees up much-needed space in our facility.

The animal welfare world has witnessed many changes in recent years regarding best practices for adoption programs. A few years ago, we would never have considered doing a fee-reduced adoption promotion, as we felt strongly that adopters should have a vested interest in their adopted pet. We were euthanizing a large number of animals, too. The ASPCA and the Humane Society of the United States have done considerable research on this topic and discovered that shelters and adoption agencies were discouraging many adopters due to their adoption fees or difficult requirements. People could obtain their pets from other sources that were less expensive and easier. These organizations recommend shelters re-evaluate their adoption programs and consider offering reduced-fee and fee-waived adoption promotions to encourage more adoptions and save more lives. Burlington Animal Services gave it a try. We not only increased our adoptions, we experienced an impressive increase in visitors to our facility. We now offer a fee-reduced adoption special each month and have enjoyed several record-breaking months. It’s important to note, we have not encountered a higher return rate with fee-reduced adoptions versus regular fee adoptions, busting yet another myth. In late March, we introduced our Mighty Mousers feral cat adoption program. Feral cats are not good candidates for adoption as house pets due to their unsocial behavior towards people. As a result, they are euthanized in high numbers. We wanted to change that outcome. Spok-Animal Humane Society in Spokane, WA, has a “Farm Living” feral cat adoption program which served as our model. Mighty Mousers is perfect for anyone with a barn or warehouse and in need of environmentally friendly rodent control. For $10, you can adopt one or two cats; we recommend two for their socialization needs. They are vaccinated, spayed or neutered and ear-tipped to indicate they are sterilized. Owners agree to provide shelter (barn, shed, etc.) and food to supplement what they catch. To date we have adopted nearly 50 Mighty Mousers. Look out, mice!

Community Engagement We have also worked diligently to engage our community as much as possible. Social media is an invaluable tool for accomplishing this. Facebook allows us to promote our animals, share ‘happy tail’ stories, provide information about upcoming events or promotions, or share educational information. We enjoy a strong following and would love for you to ‘Like’ us at www.facebook.com/ BurlingtonPetAdoptionCenter. We’re on Instagram, too, at www.instagram.com/burlingtonanimalservicesnc. More importantly, Burlington Animal Services strives to be open, accessible and transparent with our community. We have nothing to hide and will gladly answer questions, show you around or share information. Our website is an excellent source of information and resources. You can view the animals in our facility, get information about rabies and microchip clinics, sign up to volunteer or foster, check out our detailed monthly statistical reports and much more. Visit us at www.burlingtonNC.gov/pets. Creating new programs and embracing different strategies has allowed us to experience incredible progress. We have markedly increased adoptions and transfers to partnering groups, raising our live release of placeable animals from 28% in 2013, to 50% in 2014, and an astounding 86% in 2015. Our intake numbers have steadily decreased from nearly 6,300 in 2013, to 5,326 in 2014, and 4,643 in 2015, due partly to an increase in pet owners spaying and neutering their pets. But most notably, our euthanasia rate has decreased from 74% in 2013 to 39% in 2015 (nearly 50% was feral cats and more than 50% was due to serious medical or behavior problems). We have learned a lot and accomplished much in the past 2-1/2 years. There is still much work to be done, but we are headed in the right direction, and we will continue to look for fresh, innovative ways to improve how we do that work.

FIV in Cats What is Feline Immunodeficiency? FIV stands for feline immunodeficiency virus and will typically lead to a weakening of the cat’s immune system which may hinder a cat’s ability to fight off secondary infections. How is FIV Transmitted? FIV is primarily transmitted through a bite Meet Verne at Burlington Animal Services, 221 Stone Quarry Rd., wound from an infected cat, though Haw River or call 336-578-0343 it can be transmitted from an FIVfor more information. positive mother to her kitten. Burlington Animal Services recommends that FIV-positive cats be adopted to homes with no other cats or to homes with other FIV-positive cats. How To Manage a Cat with FIV. •C ats with FIV should be spayed/neutered and confined indoors in order to prevent spreading FIV to other cats and to reduce exposure to infectious agents. •C ats with FIV should be fed nutritionally complete and balanced diets. Because of their weakened immune system, these cats should not eat uncooked food or unpasteurized dairy products. •F IV-positive cats should be monitored closely by their owners for changes in health or behavior, including weight loss. • Wellness visits with your veterinarian should be scheduled at least every six months. Why Should I Adopt a Cat with FIV? FIV is manageable. Cats with FIV can live normal, happy lives for months and even years. Burlington Animal Services feels its FIV-positive cats deserve a chance at life and is looking for caring adopters that will open their homes to these special felines. Vet’s Corner Dr. Liz Bolton is an associate veterinarian at the Cat Clinic of Greensboro. While she loves all animals, she has always felt a special affinity for cats. Upon graduating from NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007, Dr. Bolton spent several years in small animal emergency/critical care medicine and general practice. Dr. Bolton has been dedicated to exclusively feline practice since 2010. Dr. Bolton’s interests within feline medicine include internal Liz Bolton, DVM medicine, geriatrics, and Cat Clinic of Greensboro dentistry. She has extra love for the self-defensive (aka “grumpy”) cats and endeavors to work with them to make their veterinary experience as pleasant and feline friendly as possible. Dr. Bolton’s commitment to highest quality care applies not only to her patients but also to their owners. She is steadfast in her belief that veterinarian and owner must work as a team to provide the happiest and healthiest life possible to the felines entrusted to her care. When not at work, Dr. Bolton can be found reading, watching movies and theater, playing board games, and traveling. She shares her home with rescue cats from geriatric (Mr. Bananas) to juvenile (Lee and Kara).

FELINE

Heartworm Disease Heartworms are transmitted to our feline (and canine) friends when bitten by an infected mosquito. The mosquito injects an immature larval stage of the heartworm when it bites. That heartworm larva then develops inside our cats, dogs, and ferrets until it is fully grown. At that point, the adult heartworm tends to lodge inside the blood vessel traveling between the heart and lungs. Signs of disease may include respiratory distress (open mouth breathing, blue gums), cough, or lethargy. However, cats often show no signs of disease until they are very sick. Unfortunately, collapse or sudden death is often the first sign of heartworm disease in cats. Therefore, it is critical that we keep our kitties protected with monthly medication. Heartworm medication works by targeting the larval stage of the heartworm during those first months after a mosquito bite causes infection in a pet. Once the heartworm is full grown, treatment is much more invasive. However, our monthly preventatives work to kill heartworms when they are still larvae, thus preventing their progression to adulthood. While mosquitoes may be seen as outdoor pests, we all know that they can sneak into homes and other inside places. Therefore, even fully indoor kitties should be on heartworm prevention. If your cat goes outside (even just on the screened porch), then she REALLY

16

should be on heartworm prevention. The American Heartworm Society reports that recent studies show the incidence of heartworm infection is now similar in dogs and cats. The reality in North Carolina is that we see a lot of heartworm disease. Cats, dogs, and ferrets are all susceptible. Luckily, cats have several options for prevention that are easy to give and include flavor chews such as Heartgard or topical liquids such as Revolution or Advantage Multi. These medications are given once monthly and also protect against some intestinal parasites, fleas, ticks, and ear mites. Your veterinarian can help you choose the product that’s best for your kitty. Let’s make sure our cats are just as protected against this disease as our dogs!!

TRUE

OR

FALSE:

1. One heartworm can kill a cat. TRUE Unfortunately, given the small size of feline hearts and blood vessels, one adult worm living in the pulmonary artery (which runs between the heart and lungs) can create enough inflammation and turbulent blood flow to cause sudden death in a cat. 2. Only outdoor cats are at risk for heartworm infection. FALSE Heartworm larvae are passed by mosquitos, which can live in both indoor and outdoor environments. Mosquitos can easily enter houses or enclosed patios. It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to pass heartworm larvae to your cat. 3. Feline heartworm disease is easy to treat. FALSE Cats are unable to tolerate the anaphylactic, or “shock”, reaction that occurs when worms are killed via the treatment (melarsomine injection) often used in dogs. Surgical removal of the heartworms can be attempted by a cardiac surgeon. However, this option is generally only considered in cats where the worm burden is so high that patient health is already significantly compromised. Therefore, while it may be successful, this procedure is considered risky at best. 4. Feline heartworm disease is expensive to treat. TRUE Diagnostics and treatment for clinical heartworm disease can easily cost several thousand dollars. 5. Feline heartworm disease is easy to prevent. TRUE Monthly heartworm treatment is affordable and easy to give. Options for treatment include flavored chewable tablets or topical medication. Some commonly recommended products include Heartgard chews, Revolution topical, and Advantage Multi topical. All of these products provide the added benefit of protection against some intestinal parasites. Furthermore, the topical medications also prevent external parasites such as fleas and ear mites. 6. Feline heartworm disease is expensive to prevent. FALSE A year’s supply of Heartgard monthly chews costs less than $100 (less than $10/month). Want more information? Check out the American Heartworm Society website: www.heartwormsociety.org/pet-owner-resources.

Training Your Pet The most important command in your dog’s life is “come”. It is the command that can literally save your dog’s life!

Recall Command; Come and I Mean It! By: Carolina Air Canine LLC

T

he “come” or recall command is the most important command in your dog’s life. It is the command that can literally save your dog’s life. It is vital that your dog come to his name in all types of situations and environments. When starting young pups on recall I always praise recall right away by using verbal praise, petting and treat rewards. This will start the conditioning process that sends your dog the message that coming when called, is required and the most rewarding thing a dog can do to please their owner. Never use your dog’s name negatively. This will be counter-productive when training for recall. Only use your dog’s name in a positive manner. This will make your dog understand to focus on you when you call his name. Here’s an example, your dog sticks his nose in the trash or toilet, and you yell, “Fido, no!” Your dog thinks, “rut roh” I’m a bad dog. Then here comes a car and your dog is about to go into the street, and you yell “Fido, no”! Does he stop in his tracks or continue on? See my point, so no shouting your dog’s name in negative tone. The formal come command is taught using a standard six foot leash. Stand facing your dog working the stay command; hold the leash loose in one hand as you command, “Fido Come”, while using a hand signal with your other hand (waving hand toward your chest like cop waving you through an intersection). Have your dog sit positioned facing you (front) or circle around and sit at your side (finish). Then give lots of positive praise, with a tasty morsel and petting. Be sure to go over the top with verbal praise when getting started.

18

Once you master the six foot recall, then the leash gets longer and longer. Repetition is the key to getting your dog to come from 10 feet, 20 feet and as far as 50 feet. One way I teach the long recall is giving the dog plenty of freedom, while on a 50 foot lead, to wander and smell the flowers. Wait until he’s distracted, and then give the recall command. Remember to always use a loose leash. If the command is ignored, then give a corrective tug to get dogs attention, giving super praise while he’s approaching you. Be creative when teaching come command, I often will back away as the dog is approaching during the recall (reverse chaining). This helps to tap into his pack instinct to follow a leader, letting the dog know you desire its company. What more could a dog owner want, a command that can save your dog’s life. What better reason to train your dog to come when called! Carolina Air Canine LLC, opened in the early 1990’s as a canine disc club, and has morphed into an all around dog wonderland with many services and features. Carolina Air Canine now features a full service dog sports park offering agility, flyball and disc dog training, grooming, boarding, and daycare in a state of the art off leash dog park facility. Nellie came to Merit with a hurt leg and a belly full of babies. Initially, we thought she might lose her leg, but she is now happy and healthy and ready for a home of her own. She is good with kids and other dogs, but finds cats a little too interesting. Nellie especially enjoys catching Pokemon with her foster dad. She is ready for a forever home since her pups have found theirs.

He loves, loves to run and play! Hobie does well with children, other dogs, and adores people. He is pottytrained, neutered, and up-todate on vaccines and knows basic commands. We believe the last weeks, days, and moments that an owner has with a pet are the most cherished times, and should be handled with dignity and love. By providing veterinary hospice and pet euthanasia services in the home, the human-animal bond is less disturbed, making a much more peaceful closing to a shared bond.

Little Ricky,

Jack

is an independent and playful little boy who enjoys toys and is very responsive to his name! He is very good with other cats and dogs and would love another fourlegged playmate in his forever home. Ricky is just a kitten so he is still learning about nail and teeth manners, however, he is litter-trained! Are you the lucky family for this little tuxedo?

is a 10 month old Beagle mix who has the best personality, is super goofy and has the biggest heart! Though a cat-free home is a must, Jack adores other dogs and is absolutely amazing with children of all ages! He loves to run and play, so he needs an active family. Jack is still a puppy so he has a lot to learn, but he is very smart and knows how to sit and give you his paw. He would do best with a family that will be patient with him because he had a rough start and fears that he will be abandoned as he was in the past. He is currently in training and learning each day that he will not be left behind ever again. You can see in his eyes that he wants nothing more than your love!

Betty White hasn’t had an easy life, but she is still a sweet and loving older gal who is also very smart! She can hear fairly well, a lot better than she can see, and is doing well walking on a leash, allowing her foster mom to lead her around hazards. We think she would be better suited in a house with no other dogs or possibly one other canine companion who would be content to just let her be. She is, however, quite friendly with felines and enjoys their company! We’d love for this senior to find a forever home to dote on her as she deserves! is a 4-1/2 year old Pug/ Shar Pei mix who has been waiting her forever family for quite some time! She is good with all people and listens to redirection, learning new things quickly. She walks beautifully on leash and is also off-leash trained. She is completely house-trained but does not do well in crates and if left alone, she gets a little anxious. In fact, Callie would most certainly benefit from having another canine companion in the house to keep her company or a parent who works from home that will help keep her anxiety at bay. She naps most of the day away but is always game for a round of fun and play! Are you the family Callie has been waiting for? She was born into the home of a hoarder, raised with a pack of dogs, and not treated like the royal princess that she has come to be. Gemma was rescued (along with all her canine friends) and came to live with an ARFP foster home. Trust had to be formed, and now Gemma is enjoying life for the first time. She likes a quiet home where she can be herself. Gemma gets along with other dogs, and is ready to find her forever home. Are you interested in meeting Gemma and seeing if you are the happy ending that she deserves? Come meet Gemma and fall in love.

Mike is a lap dog that is looking for his forever home. Do you have any extra room in your lap for a new family member? Mike wants to apply if so. Come meet Mike and fall in love. Mike is a wire haired Chihuahua mix. He was an owner surrender who was headed to the shelter. He’s a quirky little guy with lots of personality! Call ARFP at 336-574-9600 for more information. n

Fig Newton

Hooch

is in training with his foster mom and a professional trainer. He needs a home that will give him plenty of exercise, walks every day, and plenty of stimulation. He does not do well with change and would do best in a home with adults. Hooch is very loyal and loves his people. He is housetrained and crate-trained

(known to his friends as Fig) has been looking for love in all the wrong places. This fun-loving guy has just been told that his foster home is only temporary, so now he has his eyes set on the prize...a forever home!! Fig loves his foster family which is made up of cats, dogs and the humans! His adoption fee is $75.

and loves other dogs and is good with cats.

Blayne,

Piper

1.5 years old, was found by a kind college student who could not keep him but was willing to hold on to him until ARFP had a place for him. He is a large, long haired, dark blue gray cat with a beautiful coat. Blayne gets along with other cats and dogs and is an easy keep. He is playful but definitely has a calmer side for a cat his age.

was born on 2/24/16 and is a delight to have around. She enjoys playing and frolicking most of her day away. Piper loves other kittens and enjoys egging them on to play with her. Piper is spayed and upto-date on shots. She would be a good addition to any home.

LOVING PET INN ADOPTIONS 336.393.0000 / www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org

Charlotte

Hank

is an awesome 2 year old, 25 pound girl who just came to us from a pretty horrific hoarding situation. She has a gentle, submissive, friendly, loving personality despite her prior living situation. She loves snuggles and tummy rubs. She is alert, intuitive and smart. Charlotte is humble and kind, a dog you cannot resist once you meet her. She is new to things like leashes, toys and the big world outside but very ready to learn. Adoption donation $175.

is a friendly 6 pound, 2 year old Chihuahua. He is a very sweet little guy who has a submissive personality with people though he is spunky and playful with other dogs. Hank is so snuggly and affectionate, a true lap baby. He is great with kids and is perfectly fine with them picking him up and carrying him around. Hank loves to play with toys and is not possessive. He is good on the leash. Adoption donation $175.

Charlie

Jillian

is an adorable 14 pound cutie who just came to us from the same horrible hoarding situation as Charlotte. Charlie figured out he had it made the minute he was rescued and he appreciates lots of attention and has a wonderful, loving personality. He is cheerful and makes new friends right away. He is affectionate, snuggly and loves to give free kisses. He is new to the leash, toys and the outside world, but ready to learn. He is about 6 and has slightly wobbly back legs. Adoption donation $175.

is a pretty possibly Schnauzer mix who values time with her beloved family above all else. She has been in a loving home since she was about 3 years old and she is now 9. Their three small children caused her a lot of anxiety and she wants a new home without kids, please. She is house-trained and friendly, sits on command, comes when she is called and likes to be obedient. She has separation anxiety and wants to be with her loved ones as much as possible. She is low shed and 34 pounds (overweight!). Adoption donation $150.

Meadow

Carlene

is a special girl who was just rescued from a horrific hoarding situation. Meadow was hiding in a metal barrel, her only shelter. We had to pull her out but she never growled and she was calm in the car on the ride back to the shelter. She was fine for her first bath ever and her vaccinations. She is brand new to normal life as a beloved pet, so seeks an experienced, special owner who will be very patient with her and socialize her. She needs to have a male companion dog in her new home. She is young and 35 pounds. Adoption donation $125.

is a beautiful young girl (maybe Jack Russell or Fox Terrier mix?), also from the hoarding situation. She is about 2 years old and 23 pounds. She is shy but very friendly and so sweetly submissive. She has been a mommy before and has a kind and gentle spirit. Carlene is snuggly and wants to be a lap dog. She is good with other dogs, learning to play with toys, and almost housetrained already. Adoption donation $175.

Dottie

Nicholas

or Polk-aDottie, as her friends call her, was found wandering the streets of Greensboro. We looked for her home but unfortunately her owners were never found. Dottie appears to be an English Pointer Mix and is about 1-2 years old. This girl has yet to meet a stranger whether you are a dog, cat, human, or small child.

is a 5 month old Hound Mix puppy. This goofball was originally pulled from a less than desirable situation by a very nice family. He came to us when the family realized they needed help finding him a home. He loves attention and is a fairly laid back puppy. Nicholas is learning his basic manners and is a pretty good student.

Mama. “Mama” cat is a true Mama!! She nursed her two kittens and took good care of them. Then while in my foster care, other baby kittens needed a nursing mom and she took these additional kittens in, nursing, washing them and gave them love to help them flourish! Mama cat deserves a very good home - because she is very special!! All vaccinations are updated and she’s been spayed.

What a fun and simple way to give back. The Golf Tournament will be held September 24th at Monroeton Golf Course to raise money for the Rockingham County Animal Shelter.

She is a 5 year old Calico Tabby. Lulu is currently living in a foster home where she had 4 kittens earlier this spring. She is already up-to-date on her age appropriate vaccinations and will be spayed and microchipped. Then she will be all ready to go to her new fur-ever home. She would love to take along one of her sisters so she’ll have a familiar playmate and someone of her own kind to bond and spend a lifetime with. He had several abrasions from living outside, but has since healed and been neutered. He is now enjoying the comforts of a cat condo and not yet been allowed loose among the rest of the cat population, so it is uncertain how well he gets along with other cats. Tomalley is a very friendly guy and seems to love his new life indoors. If you think you might be the purr-son for Tomalley, come meet this handsome guy!

This 2 year old Hound mix was found as a stray in High Point. She is tan with black and white markings, and is affectionate and inquisitive. Toffee. Born about 4-13-2016, Toffee has the sad distinction of being the only tailed kitten in his litter of Manx mix kittens. He also has an eye that is smaller than the other one. Toffee will probably Tailless Cat Rescue always be shy with strangers, but he is getting better and better with people he knows. He will need a home with someone willing to look past his small defects of a tail and smaller eye. He’ll also need someone who will work with him on getting comfortable in a small space such as a single room, before he has to tackle an entire house. He does well with other cats and loves to play and climb. He needs a home with another young cat as a playmate. Toffee is vaccinated, wormed, FeLV/FIV negative, neutered and microchipped. is my name. I am beautiful, love to sit in a lap, and love to sleep on top of baskets. I’m smart, too. Unlike my sister, I know when to play with the dog’s tail and when not to! My favorite thing to play with is my mouse and little soft balls. My sister has nothing on me. Don’t tell her that. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Peyton

is a DSH male tabby, born in May 2016. Peyton is a handsome and distinguished young man with bold markings. He has a sweet and loving personality, is energetic but calm as well. Peyton gets along great with his siblings and his foster mates. He is current on vaccinations. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Amanda.

I’m a black and gold Tortie, the runt of my litter, but my size hasn’t affected my speed or swagger. I’m the most energetic, creative and playful of my brothers and sisters, and nothing intimidates me. My goal is always to be as high up as I can possibly be. Favorite stunt: Intercepting my litter mates mid-air and bringing them DOWN. Favorite toy: The. Whole. World. Born on May 11, 2016, I ended up at Animal Control until the foster folks at AARF rescued me from what could’ve been my untimely end. After a shaky start, I’m ready for my forever home. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Foster: AARF/Stacy Holley (stacyholley8@gmail.com). Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Athena

and her two kittens were rescued when the babies were just two days old. She is a wonderful mommy, always cooing to her kittens and checking up on them with soft meows. Athena is a lovely muted grey tabby with the barest of stripes. She is a bit shy but loves to rub against you and to have her face and head petted. She was a very young mother and took great care of her babies, but now she wants to be able to play too. She is looking for a home that appreciates her very sweet nature. She simply wants to be close and share her quiet purr. Meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Connor

Leafa.

Born in late May 2016, Leafa loves to play with her siblings. Although she is an adventurous little girl, her favorite place to be is near her person. She will move her play to the area immediately around you or just sit with you and snuggle. One of her eyes looks different because of a birth defect, but she is a healthy and happy little kitten. Her mom was surrendered to Forsyth County Animal Control the day before she was born. She’s been in foster care all of her life, and is looking for a kind and loving forever home.

and Sally are two lovable 10 week old kittens hoping to find their forever home. They were rescued after someone intentionally ran over their momma when they were only 5 weeks old. They had a rough start to life and will likely always be smaller than average. Sally and Connor are both sweet and loving and love to play!

For more information on Leafa, contact her foster mom at warriorbardofskyrim@gmail.com. Meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

If you would like to meet Connor and Sally, contact their foster Corrine at chaywood@elon.edu. Oscar. If you have ever been owned by a Pekingese, Oscar will have a very familiar feel. He provides all the benefits that living with a Peke affords: you don’t need a clock to know when it’s mealtime; you don’t need a doorbell, he will let you know there’s someone at the door; you don’t need a Hart-2-Heart Rescue blanket, he will keep your lap warm; he talks to you with those uniquely Peke grumbly sounds and he likes to have his back scratched. If you’ve never lived with a Pekingese, then you are missing out on one of life’s great joys. Pekes are unique, and Oscar is no exception. Abby is estimated to be about 7-9 years old. She loves to play fetch with her toys and her favorite thing in the world is going outside for walks. Between walks, she can always be found waiting for a cuddle with her human friends or napping in her bed. She is friendly with most people and other animals, but can be a little picky about who she warms up to right away. She currently shares her foster home with a cat. They often greet each other Chihuahua Rescue with curious sniffs, but mostly coexist without much interaction. She’s still learning how to get on a bathroom schedule, but knows how to use a pee pad if confined to her bathroom space and she usually makes it through the night without using it. Abby is spayed, up-to-date on shots, on heartworm preventative and she had a dental. When she was spayed it was discovered that she had bladder stones. These were removed but she will need to remain on a special food to prevent the formation of more bladder stones.

Simone. There’s no hiding the fact that this lovely young 1 year old Dobergirl has a genetic deformity. It’s called radial agenesis. The short of it is that it does no harm, and aside from the visual fact of it, it makes no difference in who this lovely girl is. She came to us, having been dumped at a shelter, and the malformation of her left front leg does nothing to inhibit her Doberman Rescue of the Triad motion or play in any way. It always amazes me to see how animals adapt to whatever handicaps they experience, and Simone is no exception. She runs and plays with great energy and enthusiasm, completely oblivious to the fact that she’s down a leg. She never had the use of it, so she has no sense of missing it. Read more about Simone online at www.doberman-rescue.com. Make an appointment to meet him after your application has been approved. n

is a happy-go-lucky dog that loves all people! He loves to play with his toys, but also enjoys cuddling on the couch with whoever his favorite human of the day is. He is house-trained, crate-trained, and knows sit, down, sit stay, down stay, wait, shake and roll over. Major is still working on his leash manners and attention skills. Those are HARD. He’ll Girl with 3 Dogs Photography do just about anything for a Merit Pit Bull treat though. He lives with a few other dogs, but so far has only been able to go on supervised walks with them, because he can sometimes be a little unsure about new dogs.

Layla is a gorgeous one year old girl with a lot of energy! Layla may not make a great first impression because she is nervous with new situations, but with a confident owner who will continue to work with her, should blossom in no time. She is trained to run on a treadmill, so would love an outdoor running buddy. Layla is too hyper for small children so needs a home with adults/grown children. Layla does well with doggy daycare and needs a home that will help her with her high energy, ensuring plenty of play/exercise everyday, regardless of weather or life circumstances. Only experienced Weim owners will be considered for this girl because of her exercise/anxiety needs. Tarheel Weimrescue

“Teach this triple truth to all:

T

by Allison Dunmore

each Humanity. Two simple words. We were trying to come up with an idea for a bumper sticker for the Pet Responsibility Program and after considerable deliberation, this is what we came up with. Trying to form a bumper sticker message that encapsulates exactly what we are trying to do, going into fourth grades in Guilford County Schools and teaching students about responsible pet ownership, was not an easy process. But we felt this summed it up better than anything else. So, what is The Pet Responsibility Program? Teachers in Moore County put together a curriculum that goes along with the fourth grade standard course of study to try to teach students about responsible pet ownership. It uses multiple means of presenting the information to engage as many of the students as possible. In 2012, the Moore County Pet Responsibility Program won the Governor’s Award for Volunteer Service. We began teaching it in 2013. We have taught in eleven schools in Guilford County so far and taught roughly 1500 students. And we hope to keep growing and reaching more schools and more young people. A question that is asked in almost all of the six lessons is, “What is the sad problem in Guilford County?” They quickly learn that the answer to that is pet overpopulation. Then when they are asked how to stop the sad problem in Guilford County, they learn that it is by spaying and neutering our pets. We play a game with them that shows how easy it is for pet overpopulation to happen and then it becomes the problem of the shelter. Then they learn how many animals come into the shelter each year, how many are returned to their owners, how many go to rescues, how many are adopted, and then how many are left after that. The reality that animals have to be euthanized because there is nowhere for them to go is sad. Even though this sounds like a tough lesson for 10-year-olds to learn, they get it and they understand that we can prevent it. It is amazing how smart these kids really are. This is not the only thing they learn. They learn about the needs of animals. And the cost of having a pet. We break down for them the cost of bringing a dog or cat home from the shelter. We explain that adopting an animal from a rescue group or the shelter means giving a homeless

pet the chance to be part of a loving family. They factor in the costs of a collar, leash, food, bowls, and everything else they will need. They are amazed Students learn about many aspects of Pet Responsibility at the actual including the importance of rabies, flea, tick and heartworm cost. Then we prevention. Pictured is a Guilford Elementary student with a talk about which heartworm prevention book given to each student. of those costs occur every month. And don’t forget the time commitment. Dogs need to be walked, groomed, played with, cleaned up after, trained, taken to the vet. They learn the five basic commands to teach their dog: heel, sit, come, stay, and down. Cats need to be fed, litter scooped, brushed, played with, and taken to the vet as well. They learn about the importance of having a tag and/or microchip for their dog or cat in case they get lost. And that their dog or cat should go to the vet every year for check-ups, the importance of vaccines, especially the rabies vaccine, and flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Even fish have to be fed and their environment maintained! We try to stress that pets are not toys. You can’t just put them on a shelf when you don’t feel like being with them. When you adopt a dog or cat, you are making a commitment for potentially the next 20 years. We talk about how their life is going to change in the next 20 years. When you are 10, thinking about everything that will happen between now and when they are 30 - finish school, possibly go to college, get your own home, get a job, have a family - and that dog or cat is still going to be in their life. They begin to see the commitment they are taking on. They are introduced to two animals who were taken to a shelter, Barney the cat and Snowball the dog. Barney is an older black cat that was brought to the shelter when her owner died and Snowball is a white pit bull who

escaped from being tied in the back yard. Each week they are given a little more of their story until they find loving homes. They really become invested in the story and are left in anticipation each week when it stops. They become invested in the lives of these two animals and are ecstatic as they learn that they end up with loving families. Halfway through the program, we bring in therapy dogs, primarily through Pet Partners. The handler introduces their dog and talks about the dog and the work they do. They also explain how and why they became a therapy dog. The students get to be reporters and ask questions, most questions are given, but some are ones they come up with themselves. The questions they are given are about leaving dogs in the car unattended, their favorite place to sleep, keeping the dog on a leash, knowing the common commands. They also ask about heartworms, rabies, and fleas. It provides them an opportunity to meet with a responsible pet owner to learn how they treat their animals. At the end of the class, the kids all get to pet the dog. This is definitely a highlight for them! None of them have to pet the dog if they are afraid of dogs. We tell them in advance to turn facing their desk, where they all have an activity book to work on, if they do not want to interact with the dog. We don’t want to force them. However, we have had several students who were afraid of dogs feel comfortable enough to reach out and let the dog sniff them and pet the dog. It is wonderful to see a break through like this! There is a writing contest that runs through the lessons. It is called The Speuter Bowl. In it, students write an essay about why spaying and neutering their pets is important. It is great to read their essays. They are so creative and they have seriously become invested in the lives of animals. They really do understand how they can take responsibility in stopping Guilford County’s sad problem. We have had students not only turn in an essay, but do a complete poster on spay and neuter. Or another student who did a Power Point presentation. When we receive these at the end of week five, it fills us with the joy of knowing that these kids are going to grow up with the knowledge and desire to make Guilford County’s sad problem end. That is teaching humanity. The winners of The Speuter Bowl receive a certificate for a free spay or neuter. They can use it or give it to someone who needs it. Some of our most memorable essays have been written about helping a neighbor or family member to get their pet spayed or neutered. We always give prize packages to the winners and one or two who we draw at random from those submitted. We have had donations from Ruff Love Rescue and The Humane Society of t-shirts for the kids. This is a huge hit with them. They love the t-shirts! And they love the other tchotchkes in their prize bags as well. There is so much more I could tell you about this program. But the best way to find out is to come and teach a class or two. You’ll be amazed how rewarding it is. all photos courtesy of Nancy Herring
