FROM THE EDITORS
O
ne sure way to tell spring is finally here is our Calendar of Events, it’s packed so full we had to add a third page in order to include all of them. Please go to pages 47, 48 and 49 to see the many adoption fairs and special events held by our local businesses, shelters and rescues. While you are there, ask about volunteering as a foster parent, dog walker or cat socializer, all the groups and shelters could use a helping hand. Fostering is a great way to introduce an animal to a home situation, making the transition from a shelter or rescue much easier. The SPCA of the Triad, our April cover story, illustrates the adjustments new adoptees and their new owners may have during the first few weeks and months. Patience is the key, the animal is coming from a different situation and certain behaviors may need to be addressed. But, don’t let that stop you from adopting, every animal has the potential to become a treasured part of your family. Rockingham County is offering a FREE Spay/Neuter Day on April 15th. and April 29th. for those who qualify. Please go on their website www.rockinghamcountyanimalshelter.org/home.cfm for a full list of events such as these. This opportunity is too good to miss, contact the Rockingham County Animal Shelter at 336-394-0075 for details.
Ask the Vet this month discusses the importance of being proactive with our pet’s health care. Regular check ups, Deb Printup Jennifer Frazier vaccinations, good grooming and taking advantage of specials your veterinarian offer are all good ways to save money in the long run. This month’s Training Column addresses one of the most annoying habits dogs can exhibit jumping! This is one of the biggest complaints people have, and can be potentially harmful if the person on the receiving end is elderly or very young. Find some good advice on how to curb this behavior. With our third year anniversary coming up in July, we want to remind everyone about our Cover Model Search! The winner will receive the July cover and an article about their transition from being homeless to a member of their loving family. You may find more details on page 46 about the requirements and wonderful prizes we want to offer. We have already received many submissions, so don’t forget to send us your story and your rescue’s photo!

Are your dogs ready for their spring flings and summer travel? For high-risk exposure of pets who travel out of state or romp in parks, make sure they are protected against Canine Influenza and the four common strains of Leptospirosis. Canine Influenza is a highly contagious viral infection which can cause fatal pneumonia in 8% of infected dogs. Leptospirosis is a serious bacteria which often causes fatal liver and kidney failure. First-time vaccinates should receive two injections two to four weeks apart, followed by annual boosters. Protect your jet set pets if they are at risk for these preventable diseases.

Their Rigorous Training and Incredible Contributions to Humans Imagine being completely blind in one eye and having only 10% vision in the other. If a friend asked you to go to a baseball game with them, telling you to meet them at Seat 25, Row B, Section 5 of the stadium, how confident would you feel about finding that location? It would likely be a very stressful situation. You might feel lost or intimidated by the huge, looming stadium. How confident would you feel if you had a guide dog to help you find your seat? For most, having a guide dog can give them significantly more confidence in demanding situations such as these. Blind and visually impaired persons have a very special bond with their guide dogs. These dogs are often bred for their specific jobs and rigorously trained to provide the perfect balance of assistance and companionship to their partners. Southeastern Guide Dogs is well known for providing guide dogs to the visually impaired. At Southeastern Guide Dogs, candidate dogs are selected at birth from among Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, and the mixed breed of both called Goldadors. These dogs have the inborn strength and intelligence to become guide dogs, but only the best of the best are selected for this important canine profession. The candidate dogs are sent to skilled “puppy raisers” to learn the obedience and socialization skills they will need to begin harness training. Puppy raisers keep the candidate dogs until they are 14-20 months old. During the puppy raising period, guide dog candidates learn the critical difference between being “in uniform” for work and being a dog-at-play. The final stage of training for the guide dog is harness training. This is the time when all the critical commands are learned and situations are rehearsed. During this training, the dogs learn the 40 commands they must know while in harness such as: sit, forward, find the curb, find the elevator, and find the chair. Dogs in harness training also learn when to disobey. The guide dogs must have the training to know when it is acceptable to disobey a command that would put their partner in harm’s way. Finally comes the best part where the harness trained dog meets their new visually impaired partner at last! The dog and new partner then train together to become a working team and begin building the bond of lifelong friendship. To learn more about guide dogs working with the blind and visually impaired, visit John McKenzie, President of Pet Praise Products, at his blog about Guide Dogs: blog.petpraiseproducts.com. may tempt your dog, including your favorite sandals, it is best to remove them from the room. All pets warm our hearts; especially the animals that are rescued and brought into loving homes. Shelter dogs showcase such gratitude and admiration for their new owners. Many dogs have been rescued from unfit environments and may have been abused. In saying this, if a dog has been in a neglected situation, left on a chain and rarely shown any attention or training, there is a possibility for the dog to have behavioral challenges. You are not alone! Abused and neglected dogs are often left with tendencies that need work. Along with the helpful tips mentioned here, there are several other ways to approach correcting your dog’s bad habits. the determining factor, so again, you may want to check with your veterinarian or an experienced dog trainer to see which product would work best for your dog. When animals have been neglected, rescued, and then brought into a warm loving home, sometimes they have anxiety of being abandoned again. If you leave for several hours, whether you’re at work or running errands, and come home to find torn furniture or your favorite sandals are now your dog’s favorite toy, there are several things to consider. Know that your dog loves you, worships the ground you walk on, and can hardly imagine a life without you. The
mess your dog might have made is due to the anxiety he feels without you. Separation anxiety and the idiosyncratic nature dogs have to chew—and let’s face it—ruin items in the house, is NOT to spite you for leaving them; instead this is your dog’s anticipation for your return. If this behavior becomes problematic, you might want to consider the following solutions: 1.) Crate your dog—if leaving for several hours, put your dog in their kennel to avoid these accidents 2.) “Doggy-Proof ” your house!—make sure electronic cords are hidden and doors to certain rooms shut. with other animals.
Sweet Alice was found wandering around, hungry and wanting attention. She “adopted” a couple who were, unfortunately, allergic. Alice was not discouraged, she knows the Humane Society will help her find her fur-ever family! She is only about a year and loves to play about as much as she loves treat time! Alice is a Hemingway cat, meaning she has thumbs!

Susie
and Lucky came from the same horrible conditions. Unfortunately for Phoenix, she came to us pregnant, but could not carry to term because she was in bad shape. Now, as you can see, she is feeling much better! Phoenix loves to cuddle and wants nothing more than a warm lap or sunny spot where she can take naps. Phoenix is about 1 year old and loves other animals.
is a beautiful 5 month old kitten looking for her next shot at true love. She was found outside, yet acclimated quickly to spoiled indoor life. She has decided that’s the way she’d rather spend her life! Susie is very independent. She likes to play, but when it is time for her to be alone, she will let you know. Susie is such a wonderful and sweet girl!

Toulouse, Berlioz, Figaro.
Here is an updated glamour shot of Jasmine. She was adopted and then returned, and now she is really hoping someone wants her! She may be a little older, not really a kitten anymore, but she thinks that makes her even more special! She is very low maintenance and hopes to be adopted soon. You can visit Jasmine at Mebane Veterinary Hospital.
There babies came to us after being abandoned by their young mother. They needed a lot of extra TLC early on, but now they are nearly ready for adoption! t e V e h t Ask Q A
Brooke Townsend, DVM Dr. Brooke is a Greensboro native and works at Sedgefield Animal Hospital and Dental Center. A graduate of NC State, she has been practicing veterinary medicine for eleven years. Dr. Brooke enjoys working closely with pet owners to provide all of her patients with the best quality of life and medical care.
How can I keep my pet healthy and save money at the same time?
At Sedgefield Animal Hospital, we see each pet as a member of your family. It is our responsibility to treat your pet and offer you the best care possible. We also see it as our responsibility to communicate with you and design the best plan for treatment based on your pet’s needs and your financial needs. So what can you do to save money on your pet’s health care? PREVENTATIVE CARE IS KEY! We see many pet owners struggling financially to provide care for their pets. Early preventative care can save on your family’s budget and will greatly improve the health of your furry family, adding years to their lives. We can ward off many diseases and injuries with a few simple steps: • Brush your pet’s teeth! Imagine what your teeth would look like if you didn’t brush daily. It’s a well-known fact dental disease can cause problems and can affect the kidneys, liver, heart and other vital organs. Regular professional dental cleanings will still be needed but daily brushing will improve your pet’s overall oral health. • Prevent those pesky parasites! Generic flea preventatives may have the same active ingredients but they do NOT contain the carrier agents that allow the medication to get into the oil glands so they can be effective for a full month. Generics and some brands found at big retail stores only kill 40-60% of the fleas! Ask us what product would be best for your pet. Many companies offer promotions only through your veterinarian’s office. • Feed your pet a quality diet! A leather shoe has the same nutritional makeup as some of the pet foods available on the market. Don’t skimp on your pet’s nutrition. Labels can be very confusing, so ask us if you have questions about different brands. When looking at the cost of feeding your pet be sure to compare not only the price per pound of food but also the amount per daily feeding. You will be surprised to find that you currently need to feed your pet 5 cups daily of a lower quality food vs. just 3 cups daily of a much higher quality of food. You can actually spend less money monthly, while providing your pet with better nutrition! • Don’t skip that monthly heartworm pill! The cost of preventing this deadly disease can be as little as $6 per month. The treatment to kill adult heartworms once your dog is infected can cost up to $1,000 to $1,800 and can cause great damage to your pet’s overall health, and if left untreated can be fatal. • Spay and Neuter your pet! Not only are you preventing unwanted births and decreasing pet overpopulation, but spaying and neutering your pet has several health benefits as well. In fact, spaying your female dog/cat before their first heat-cycle can significantly reduce their risk of developing breast cancer. • Follow vaccine recommendations! These do change over time as we
see more or less disease in our area. We tailor the vaccine protocol to each individual pet - always weighing the risks vs. the benefits! • Routine grooming is not just for “looks”! Having your pet groomed often can prevent many problems from occurring. Matted hair, dirty ears and long nails can cause many skin and other health concerns. • Don’t waste money on supplements and vitamins not recommended by your veterinarian! If your pet needs skin or joint supplements, ask your family Veterinarian which brands they prefer. Did you know that 80% of supplements sold in some pet stores do not contain what they claim to contain? • Take advantage of discounted promotions and wellness lab packages! At Sedgefield Animal Hospital, with our annual visit, we offer a discounted panel of lab work that includes your pet’s heartworm and intestinal parasite screen with additional lab tests to screen for diabetes, kidney disease, and much more. Prevention and early detection are safer and less expensive than the treatment of more advanced diseases. Pets age more rapidly in comparison to people. Working together to identify these changes early, will result in greater success in keeping your companions as healthy as possible for as long as possible. • Be “Street Smart”! Many accidents and injuries we see can be easily avoided. Be sure to keep your dog on a leash when walking. When playing in a fenced in yard make sure the area is clear of sticks and other sharp objects. Don’t let your pet eat things they find in the yard or on walks. Avoid letting them drink from standing water. For our feline friends, keep cats 100% indoors if at all possible! Cats that stay inside live years longer and have fewer illnesses. • Consider getting your dog or cat Pet Insurance! Payment methods and savings can vary, but part of being able to provide needed veterinary care, is establishing a pet health insurance plan. Our clients tell us their pet insurance pays for itself over and over. We understand the need to save money while caring for your pet and the difficulties caused by getting caught unprepared. We want to partner together with you to provide the best quality veterinary care possible. If you have any questions or concerns don’t hesitate to talk to one of our staff to find out more ways to protect your furry friend. Our goal is to give your pet the best care possible without breaking your bank!

Amy.
Wyatt was found trying to play
I took Amy in from a neighbor who was going through chemo and could not take care of her anymore. Unfortunately, my teenage boy cats are terrorizing her. She needs to be either the only cat or with another quiet cat. She is fine with my Border Collie so dogs are not a problem. She is three years old and is updated on all of her shots. She is totally blind in one eye and partially blind in another for reasons unknown. She is on prescription canned food for cystitis and will need to continue to prevent any episodes. She is a sweet, loving calico/Siamese mix who loves to be brushed and petted. Please help her find a home where she is not attacked around every corner.
with someone’s dog through a fenced yard. Once the owner of the other dog realized that Wyatt was not going anywhere except to play with her dog through the fence, she let him inside. Wyatt felt like he had found heaven except that this new home was not financially able to care for two dogs. Luckily, Wyatt made it to the Animal Rescue & Foster Program and is now happy in his new foster home until a forever home can be found. Wyatt weighs less than 20 lbs. and is a short little guy with long black hair. His estimated birthdate is 4/1/12. What breed is Wyatt? He has the build of a Corgi, the coat of a Golden Retriever, and the color of a black Lab, however we’re definitely calling him a 20 lb. mutt! Come meet Wyatt today!

Rico
Copper
(short for Richochet) hitched a ride to the firing range under the hood of a deputy’s patrol car. He was born sometime in May 2012. He is a little shy at first, but once he’s got you figured out, his inner Tiger will reveal itself! He will stalk his dinner dish and pounce (especially for canned food).
is about 1.5 years old and was found wandering the streets of High Point. A nice family took him in until they could find a rescue group for him. He is very loving and has never met a stranger. Copper is an active dog looking for an active family that can keep up with him. He loves to run and play with other dogs and toys. Copper would love for his new family to take him on long walks, hikes, or runs. He would be a great dog for a runner and his foster mom has even taught him to walk on a treadmill. Copper definitely has the “smart” gene in him and seems to learn commands easily. Copper weighs about 25 lbs. Want to meet him?

Dolly. Hi! I am a tiny 4 year old little girl that loves to be spoiled rotten. I am deaf, but that doesn’t stop me. I’d prefer to be an only dog. I’m trying real hard to learn to go on newspapers or pee pads. I will go outside if you take me. I am spayed, UTD on shots, have had a dental and on HW preventative. My left front wrist was broken twice and the 2nd time it didnt heal correctly. My orthoChihuahua Rescue pedic vet recommended leaving my wrist as is because it doesn’t cause me any pain and I get along just fine with it the way it is. I would love to sleep in the bed with my foster mom but she’s afraid I’ll fall off the bed and break something else. I sleep just fine on a little bed beside my fosters mom’s bed. My foster mom says that I am a little spit fire and that I think that I am a Rottweiler. If you want to continue to spoil me, fill out and submit an application and my foster mom will be right back in touch with you. Thanks! Contact CarolinasCoordinator@chihuahua-rescue.com or go online at www.chihuahua-rescue.com. n

Artemis
Cashew,
is a beautiful feline goddess with fur of shimmering solid blue. Her sweet face is hard to resist. Born in July of 2011 and rescued along with her mom and four siblings, she was adopted, but sadly lost her home when her owner later decided he didn’t have enough time to spend with her. Artemis is playful and affectionate. Artemis will do best in a home that is a bit on the quiet side. She’d love to have all of your attention showered on her. This beauty can’t wait to find her true forever home and she will make a wonderful companion to someone who is able to spend some quality time with her!
almost a year old, is now the last of his siblings still waiting to find his forever home and family. He’s an adorable boy who still has a lot of kitten in him. He is vigorously playful and loves chasing balls and killing toy mice. He remains very loving and affectionate and loves hugs and back rubs, which make him purr quite loudly. He still sneaks in a climb to the tops of the cages at Petsmart when he thinks no one is looking. With that irresistible face, and endearing purrsonality, we can’t figure we out why he hasn’t gone home yet, but we know there is a special home out there for this very special kitty.

Marmalade is a young cat
Pearl,
who was surrendered to FCAP because his family moved to housing that didn’t allow cats. Even though they loved him very much, sadly they weren’t able to keep him. Marmalade is the sweetest, most adorable orange boy that you could ever find. He is playful, outgoing and affectionate. Playing with his toys keeps him busy for hours; that is until you come into the room and he taps you on the leg to let you know it is time to eat. Bird watching is one of his favorite pastimes, so if you have a big window in your house and a big heart for lovable orange kitties, Marmalade may be your guy!
our beautiful silver girl with the beautiful green eyes, is still patiently waiting for her furr-ever home. Pearl can be a “bit fussy” when put in a new situation with people she doesn’t know, but once she becomes comfortable, she promises to make a wonderful, loving feline companion. Pearl will run up to you with her tail straight up to be scratched on the head and neck. Pearl would love to be the center of attention in her new home and be an only kitty; but she might be ok with another docile cat or a calm dog. A relatively quiet home without small children would suit her best. If you want to shower all of your love and affection on one wonderful kitty, Pearl is your girl!

Tinkerbelle
Kumal is a wonderful,
has been waiting a very long time for her permanent home and family! This beautiful torbie and white kitty has expressive green eyes that are enhanced by her gorgeous color pattern. She has an interesting face that sets her apart from other cats and makes her unique and endearing. Tink, as we call her, loves to play with her circle ball for hours. She also loves to be brushed and petted. She can be a bit reserved at first, but will make a loving and affectionate feline companion. Do you have room in your heart and home for this beautiful kitty?
sweet and calm kitty boy that is timid, until he gets used to a new situation. Though he was adopted as a tiny kitten to a single man, he later found himself in a home with small children, which was not a happy situation for this sensitive kitty. His stress level was increased when they declawed him. He loves to lie on his foster mom’s lap and purr and talk. Kicking his catnip toy, bird watching, and chattering are among his favorite daily activities. Kumal would be happiest in a quiet household, with no other pets or children.

is a 9 lb. 1 year old baby doll who looks like a Chiweenie (Chihuahua/Dachshund designer dog) with silky soft fur. He is great on the leash and fetches like a pro. Kwinkle is also good with other dogs.

Zoe
Sonji
is a small Shepherd mix who came to Red Dog Farm after being found as a stray. You couldn’t ask for a cuter girl! She is still a puppy at heart but aims to please whoever she is near. Zoe would love an active companion who enjoys a daily adventure or maybe a big weekly adventure. She would be an excellent companion for someone who enjoys obedience work, can take her to work with them, or who enjoys hiking, running, or biking.
was found abandoned at the end of a dead-end road all alone and scared. Now this young girl is enjoying her new life playing with her foster family and being spoiled rotten. Sonji is a very smart girl and is eager to learn. She would do well in any home willing to take the time to work with her and enroll her in puppy classes. Sonji absolutely loves children and would like to have a few human siblings of her very own.
If you are interested in giving this young love a home, please visit www.reddogfarm.com! n

Sprocket
was found as a stray. We searched for his owners for over three weeks with no luck. Today, Sprocket is enjoying his new life with his foster family. He has been neutered, microchipped and is current on all of his vaccinations. Now all this happy go lucky pup needs is to find his new forever family. If you are interested in adopting Sprocket, please visit our website at www.reddogfarm.com! n
Lulu
is a three year old pot bellied pig who is very tame and used to being petted. She can be a bit bossy if she doesn’t get her way, so she would be best suited for an experienced pig owner who knows how to be a strong alpha. She came to us overweight and is currently on a diet, so she needs to continue that diet in her new home. Lulu will be spayed towards the end of April by NCSU Veterinary students under the supervision of Dr. Kristie Mozzachio, a pot-bellied pig specialist. It is a great idea to spay female pigs because it decreases hormonal behavior and prevents uterine tumors. Dr. Mozzachio also recommended that Lulu be introduced to other pigs because “a pig with a friend is a happier pig”. If you are interested in learning more about Lulu and our other adoptable pigs, please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n

Burrito (pictured) and her sister Sassy came to Red Dog Farm this past December and both were very timid and scared of people. Now four months later this pair has become some of the most entertaining teenager cats we have ever seen. Burrito loves to snuggle with her sister and loves to bury herself in her blanket (yes, she looks just like she’s wrapped up in a Burrito). Sassy and Burrito are a very bonded pair and need to be adopted together. They would still do best in a quiet home but given time will probably adjust to any living situation. If you are interested in adopting Burrito and her sister Sassy, please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n
Daphne (pictured) and her sisters Skippy and Romena came to Red Dog Farm when their owners could no longer provide care for them. Millie.
Hello! Lizzie here, peeking out from my cubby hole in the cat tree. I’m about 3 years old and declawed in my front paws. Although I am a glorious grey and white, I wish people would stop trying to clean that spot off my nose - that’s part of my nose! They’re only human, you know. I can be a little shy at first but why don’t you come by the SPCA and we’ll get acquainted!
Shhhhh.... Millie is sleeping. Taking a break from her job as office cat, Millie is picture perfect even when napping! A 6 month old sweet playful tabby, Millie has these wonderful spots all over - and she is soooo soft! She would really enjoy a playmate. After playtime, Millie could curl up in your lap and purr the day away while you try to count her spots.

Hey -- you up there! Bella here, letting you know that if you’re looking for a cute, settled Basset girl, look no further! I’m about 7.5 years old, house-trained, and love being around people. I was turned into the shelter because I wasn’t getting along with the Carolina Basset Hound Rescue new dog my owners suddenly brought home. Anywho, I got along just fine with my kennel-mates at the shelter, and I love being with my foster family’s pack. I’m upto-date on all my vetting (and thankfully am heartworm negative), so if you’re looking for the perfect Basset package, ask for me -- Bella! Dora was rescued from a puppymill and is busy learning all about “just being a dog”. Mellow Dora has blossomed since first arriving and although she is a unique girl, more “cat-like” than “dog-like”, she is a very adjusted girl for what she has endured. Her only lasting flashback is the way men once treated her, so she does Boston Terrier Rescue not care for them at all. Dora is about 6.5 of NC years old, crate and leash trained but is still having a bit of trouble with the house training issue. She is submissive and gets along great with dogs and children and loves cats. She walks and sleeps on the top of the sofa and sleeps on the shelves! Dora likes to give kisses and snuggle and needs a family that will be devoted and understanding to helping her learn about “just being a dog”. Call 339-4368 to adopt Dora. n

Brody is a 3 year-old smooth red
Janna is a happy girl who just loves to be with her humans. She’s 5 years old, very obedient, wags her tail almost constantly, and often greets with a little Dober grin. She groans with delight when her belly is rubbed, and when she wakes up from a nap or overnight, she tends to wake slowly, groaning and stretching (much like some humans do) before she stands up. Janna loves to play and run and is good Doberman Rescue of the Triad with older children and some large dogs. Like most Dobermans though, her favorite thing is to be with her human, doing whatever may be the order of the day.
Dachshund mix. He’s about 14 lbs., making him a tweenie-sized Dachshund. Brody loves to run and play outside with his foster brothers and sisters. Almost Home He would do well with older children Dachshund Rescue who like to run and play outside in a fenced yard, or another dog he can play with. Special Feature
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) estimates that six to eight million homeless animals
One By One By Susan Lynn Person
T
he unbearable ASCPA commercials starring Sarah McLachlan unfortunately speak the truth about homeless animals. Walking into a crowded animal shelter takes both courage and strength. Seeing kennels and cages lining concrete walls holding animals vying for attention is not for the weak. Hearts are broken instantly – both the potential adopter and the poor soul that is left longing for a warm home suffer. Affection. Security. Such simple requests, yet shelters all over the world are overflowing with a variety of homeless pets. Each with their own personalities, but with only one agenda: to please and to comfort. As difficult as this charge may be, it is important to remember that the one you adopt is one less that will be euthanized. One less that will have to sit alone and wonder what they did wrong to deserve solitude and neglect. There is nothing more gratifying than rescuing a discarded animal from an appalling fate and giving him or her the care they deserve. The ability to witness the transformation as they add pounds and shed pain can be life changing. These animals that we open our arms and homes to are so grateful for this new found love and affection that the experience can’t help but change us as well. In Spring of 2007, a dear friend, Salem Owens, decided it was (finally!) time to adopt a dog and asked me to join in her search.
Cisco, with his short and stocky frame and goofy smile, seemed inevitable to quickly find a home.
enter animal shelters every year. About half will be adopted while the other half will be euthanized.*
Our venture took us to animal organizations in Forsyth and Guilford Counties. As we entered a shelter, we were immediately hit with the desire to take each and every one home. But logic prevailed. The reality is that we cannot save them all on our own, but we can try, one by one. It is key to know which animal(s) can fit into your particular lifestyle when deciding to add to the family. Too often the animal is left to suffer when unrealistic expectations cannot be met. Salem knew what traits would best fit her family and their everyday routine. Actively seeking those individualities, she found one dog that would be a great match. However, that dog had already found a forever home. Yay! for the dog. Phooey! for my friend. The search continued. As we entered the kennel area of the Guilford County Animal Shelter, several enthusiastic pups promptly greeted us. Just down the way a small white and tan Chihuahua, obviously shaken, trembled all alone. The sign on her kennel read: Only Serious Inquires. Timid. May Bite. Absolutely No Kids. I passed by, but could not get the image of that sad creature out of my head. A few kennels away was Cisco, a relatively young dog that looked to be mixed with Rhodesian Ridgeback and Dachshund. With his short and stocky frame and goofy smile, it was inevitable that he would quickly find a home. He had a cautious, but friendly disposition, which quickly warmed the longer we doted on him. Salem did not make an immediate commitment, but returned shortly with her family in tow. Salem and Cisco are now inseparable. They continue to have an adventurous and happy life together. I could not have been happier for Salem and Cisco. However, I went home with a heavy heart that day. After discussing the day’s events with my husband, we decided to visit the little Chihuahua again. This time I
asked to see her outside the kennel. Once we met her in the visitor area, it was very obvious that she was simply terrified. According to her appearance and information sheet, “Jazz” had recently given birth and was abandoned by her family when they moved. No wonder she was shaking and on edge. After some gentle coaxing and treats, her anxiety began to subside. Eventually, she climbed in my lap on her own accord and instantly knew she would fit right in. At the time, my husband and I had two dogs and four cats at home. All were rescues from questionable backgrounds. As a result, we felt comfortable adopting Jazz and her baggage. On the ride home, we decided that Penelope was a more suitable name. Outdoor introductions with our dogs, Zoey and Lilah, went very well. The cats even tolerated Penelope. Soon she became Princess Penny as she was the first dog to ever show interest in getting on the couch or sleeping with us. Of course we allowed this. We are suckers for sad eyes and Penny exploits this at any given opportunity. Our experience with Penny is not uncommon. Many times the animal in the shelter is not the animal you bring home. Providing proper care and love can go a long way with these amazing creatures. Don’t turn away from them. They can show you love and devotion like nothing you’ve experienced. Please stop the heartbreak. Make adoption your only option. Susan has lived in Greensboro, NC since 1993. She and her husband, Griff, are currently living with five cats and four dogs, all of which are rescues. The chaos in their lives is unreal, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. When she has the time, she enjoys reading, photography and cycling.

Jake Gardner’s Rescue: The Fort by Kim Thore
Karen Davison once said “Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.” If you were to ask the quiet but passionate and unassuming man behind The Fort, you would feel certain that Jake Gardner is no stranger to changing lives. The name may sound familiar and the face may remind you of someone famous, but the work that Jake is doing in North Carolina is surely what he will be most recognized for in years to come. As one of the stars of the Animal Planet’s “Pit Bulls and Parolees” the show that follows the lives of ex convicts and the much misaligned pit bull breed, Jake Gardner has now relocated to the East Coast and he has launched his own non-profit rescue here in Asheboro, North Carolina. Jake conceptualized “The Fort”- Fortitudine Vincimus Rescue Center, as a no kill, non-discriminatory rescue dedicated to alleviating the suffering of all dogs. However, Jake has worked with and “parented” many American Pit Bull Terriers and he recognizes that upon entering a shelter, a Pit Bull’s fate is often all but sealed. Some shelters refuse to allow them to be adopted and they are almost immediately euthanized. Jake and his team work Jake has relocated near Asheboro, NC and runs a non-profit rescue. with local shelters as well as many of the other foster based rescue groups in the area and The Fort is fast becoming a loving home for many dogs that would face a very uncertain and often times grim future. When asked why he embarked on building his own rescue, Jake noted: “We believe that every dog deserves a loving, caring home that will give them the best life possible, the life they deserve. We are avidly working towards improving the lives of all animals through education, promoting spaying and neutering to reduce overpopulation, thereby lowering shelters’ extremely high kill rates.” The Fort’s focus remains steadfast: rescuing and adopting animals to loving homes that are looking to welcome a new member to the family. Believing in the humane treatment of all breeds and animals, no matter how large or small, The Fort is making a difference in our state.

Training Your Pet
Training Your Dog Not to Jump by Angela Craven, Moms 4 Paws
J
umping is probably one of the most common and most annoying problems a dog can have; leading not only to owners who get frustrated when trying to bring their dog around others, but also may drive away family and friends that are scared of being hurt because the dog jumps. Many people who have dogs that jump have a hard time convincing people that they will not get hurt when they visit or if they want to pet the dog, especially when that dog is a larger breed. So what can be done to help curb this unwanted behavior? First, take a look at your dog. What breed is your dog? How old is your dog? Is your dog an outside dog? Does your dog get plenty of exercise? These questions are important and may help you come up with a good plan to deal with your jumping dog. Most dogs that jump do so out of excitement and many have extra energy that helps bring that level of excitement up higher than you may want. When your dog is overly excited he will jump more and listen less. The breed of your dog may factor into his excitement level based on the natural energy of that breed. If you have a high energy breed, you will want to help bring that energy level down by being sure the dog gets plenty of exercise during the day. This will also help with the jumping since a tired dog is less likely to have the energy to jump. The same goes with young dogs that naturally have more energy than older dogs. After insuring your dog has plenty of exercise, your next step is to look at your behavior. Do you add to your dog’s excitement causing him to jump more? You may without even realizing that is what you have been doing. If you enter your house and the first
44
thing you do is call your dog over in an excited manner, maybe with a high pitched voice, or perhaps patting your legs repeatedly while calling him excitedly, you have just helped to fuel your dog’s excitement making him more likely to run at you and jump. To help stop this when you or anyone enters the home, you should walk calmly past your dog, ignoring him until he has calmed down, then you may greet him. This may include going into another room and not allowing him to follow or even turning and walking away from him each time he attempts to jump. Once he has calmed to the point that he is no longer trying to jump, you may pet him. However, if he begins to get excited and tries to jump, you will want to walk away again until he is calm. This should be repeated over and over until the dog has learned that only when he is calm, and has all his paws on the floor, will he receive any attention. You will also want to instruct any guest that may visit to follow the same procedure when coming into your home. That way the corrections you are using with your dog will be reinforced, even with a new person. Consistency with this training will help your dog learn faster that jumping is unacceptable. If after trying this your dog still seems to jump then you may try having someone leash him as you practice ignoring his jumps so that he is unable to follow you. Once he either stops jumping or ideally, sits, you may walk back over and reward him with attention. If he jumps as you come over, walk away again, repeating until he understands what you want. This method can also be used when guests
April 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
come over. In this situation you would be the one holding the leash and stopping the dog from being able to follow the guest and jump. Instruct your guests that they must wait until your dog is seated to pet him. Don’t get discouraged if this takes some time or if he has days where he seems to forget what you have worked on. Just be consistent and your dog will eventually get the point and jumping should no longer be a major issue. Angela Craven moved to NC six years ago. She is a graduate of Guilford College, where she majored in Biology but focused her studies on Animal Behavior. She began her career training dogs at PetSmart and went on to work at a local veterinary hospital. She followed her passion and continued to train dogs and learn new techniques. She has had a rough two years at a trailer park with mean-spirited people, dogs, and other cats. She would enjoy rolling over on her back for you to rub her tummy and loves lying close on your feet to keep you warm. She is inside all the time now, and finally feels safe. She’s up-to-date on all vaccines. Purrfect Friends Cat Rescue & Adoption Can you find a place in your heart and home for this love muffin? Suzy is housebroken, crate-trained, reasonably gentle with the other dogs, fine with the cats, and fine with my 11 year old. This 6 year old Beagle/Pom mix is sweet, adaptable, loves car rides, has fun at the dog park, looooves soft squishy beds, drops Stokes County Humane Society kids off at school like a pro, and walks okay on a leash. The downside is she hits the deck if she hears yelling, flinches if we move too quickly near her, and runs from loud noises as she was from an abused home. With a little TLC and a quiet environment she will make someone very happy! Email info@stokescountyhumanesociety.com or call 336-994-6117 or visit www. stokescountyhumanesociety.com for more details. n
