ON THE COVER: Duncan is a 5 month old English Bulldog from a suspected puppy mill. He has a very fun loving personality. As a mature male, he could weigh between 55-60 pounds. English Bulldogs do not need a lot of physical exercise, so they are well-suited for living in apartments and other urban environments. If you are interested in seeing any of the dogs rescued from this facility, please contact the Guilford County Animal Shelter at 336.297.5020 or go online at: www.adoptshelterpets.org.

Cute and Cuddly: An Inside Look at Puppy Mill Dogs By Marsha Williams
H
ow do I begin, so many stories to be told, so many animals suffering due to neglect, so many living a life of pain and sadness. So many dogs that cannot help themselves, who have no voice, who cannot change their situations. Prisoners in filthy housing with no escape, teeth rotting, skin itching, thirsty, hungry, and longing for attention. Noise and stench everywhere! Their eyes are burning, running, itching, causing them pain. Are they going blind, how do they cope, does anyone care? Close your eyes and imagine living in these conditions. Imagine your family living and suffering like this, only to produce babies so that someone can make money. At least the puppies will escape the horror of living in these conditions. But will they escape the problems associated from lack of medical treatment and genetic issues from parents who should not be producing litters? Daily, the Guilford County Animal Shelter receives dogs into the shelter with various illnesses because the owners cannot afford to take care of them. More than a few of these animals have been used to breed puppies for profit, bringing in hundreds of dollars, yet

Remember, those who have owners that have more animals the more patient and gentle you are, the faster than they could possibly care for even on a good day. These dogs never experience running, your puppy mill dog will come around. Give them a dog crate and cover it with a blanket playing, being groomed, going for a walk, or so they will feel safe. Cover Story drag it around the house. This will also make it easier to get them out from under furniture if they use that as an area to hide. Letting the dog drag a leash will also help them get used to the feel of the leash when it’s attached to their harness, which may make on-leash walks easier. This is also a useful method to get them used to noises. When you are watching television or taking a short nap on the couch, let the dog sleep in his crate next to you. This will help him get used to your presence and bond with you while you both relax. It also works well at night beside your bed, if you want the dog in your bedroom with you while you sleep. Puppy mill dogs are usually housed with other dogs all day and night. They often trust new dogs before they trust new people. So if you already have a friendly, outgoing dog, they will be a great comfort to your rescue dog, as well as a role model. After their first introduction, make sure that your dogs have opportunities to spend time together. If you have friends or family with an outgoing, welladjusted dog, create opportunities for them to spend time together. Before you know it, your new dog will bond strongly to you and your family. Older puppy mill dogs may take longer to become less fearful. Puppy mill dogs usually do not have an opportunity to interact with people and have not been exposed to sights, sounds or experiences which can develop into socialization issues. When you bring a dog into your home with no socialization skills they will be afraid of everything and everyone. This is a new experience for a dog from a puppy mill. They have no idea that a world outside of a
kennel even exists. Your home could be a very strange and scary place—eliminating outside, wearing a collar and leash, going on walks and meeting strangers will all be new and stressful experiences. Older dogs whose habits are wellformed may have a hard time getting used to people and changing some of their unpleasant behaviors. You and your family will need to calmly and patiently assure them that the world is not such a scary place and that you and others are worthy of their trust. You will need to take things slow and go at the dog’s pace. Soon you will reap the rewards of watching your shy dog overcome his fears. When you bring new people into your home, ask them not to give a greeting that includes a direct gaze, leaning over, or reaching with hands, as this is actually quite threatening to a dog. Instead, have guests sit or crouch, avoid eye contact and just let the dog approach on his own when he is feeling comfortable. If your guests do not feel comfortable crouching or sitting ask them to just walk and talk as normal and avoid contact with the dog in any way. Wait until the dog approaches them and then give affection. One great way to get to know a dog from a puppy mill situation is to sit on the floor while reading a book and scatter treats all around you. This way, the dog can approach as much as he likes and is repeatedly rewarded for his bravery. When the dog will readily take treats from your hand, you can try giving a gentle scratch on his chest and, if your dog still seems at ease, work up to scratching under his collar. If your dog shrinks away from something he encounters, try associating that thing with a favorite treat or toy, over and over, until he
is no longer scared. Consult a trainer for more specific methods of training for each individual issue. You can do the same thing if the dog is afraid of strangers, with treats coming from you at first. With consistent training your dog will begin to associate the treats with the encounter that he is afraid of, and eventually overcome his fears. Consider enrolling your dog in a group training class when you think your dog is ready. Agility training and obedience classes that use positive training techniques may help build your dog’s confidence. Before adopting a dog from the shelter that has come from a suspected puppy mill situation, please do lots of research and talk with your family and make sure this is the right dog for you. The Guilford County Animal Shelter provides adoption counseling and a puppy mill waiver to inform adopters about the issues involved in adopting dogs from these situations. Still some of the dogs are returned because they have ongoing medical issues, are not housebroken, will not look at their new family, hide from the family, scared of children and noises, or do not walk on a leash. Most of these issues can be resolved with a little patience and consistent training. The medical needs are unavoidable, so make sure you are prepared financially to handle the cost before you adopt and you will have a dog that will bring unconditional love and joy to your home for their lifetime.

Lucy is a 1-1/2 year old
336.574.9600 www.arfpnc.com
Tuck.
Dalmatian mix. She was rescued by ARFP after her owner moved away and left her chained outside. Lucy has put those days of neglect behind her and is ready for a loving family to come along and adopt her! She gets along really well with other dogs and loves to play. Lucy is an active dog and she will run laps in the backyard while tossing her toys in the air. She loves attention and will hang by your side as long as you are willing to pet her. She has the softest coat and such a sweet disposition. Lucy is full-grown weighing about 26 lbs., so she’s a great size. She has been spayed and is up-to-date on vaccinations.
This little guy needed a name so we turned to our Facebook friends who submitted over 75 names for us to choose from. The winning name was Tuck so..... meet our little TUCK! Tuck’s mother was a Pitty mix and dad was a one night stand. Tuck was born on 1/26/12 and is about the cutest little bully dog ever! He has already been started on his crate and house training. Tuck has done very well with his schedule since being weaned. He is very people oriented and is currently living with other dogs and a cat in his foster home. Tuck is a quiet little guy, and with continued structure, will be a wonderful addition to any home. Tuck will be knee high when he is full grown! Come meet our little Tuck today!

Kirby.
Loki.
Meet Kirby! This good looking little guy is one of ARFPs newest fosters! He and his siblings were removed from their home because their owner wasn’t taking care of them. Now, Kirby has started interviewing for his forever family. He’s asking that his new home have lots of toys and for his new owners to have plenty of time to spend with him. Kirby was born on 12/1/11. We think he and his siblings are part Boxer and Beagle and maybe part something else too. He is working on house and crate training in his foster home. He is up-to-date on routine vaccinations and has been neutered.
Born on 3/23/11, Loki is sometimes referred to as the goodwill ambassador of our adoption center. He LOVES other cats. Loki is happiest jumping and running after balls or chasing a laser light. He is capable of entertaining himself for hours. Loki really wants to be with people and would also gladly sit in your lap all day while you watch tv or surf the internet. Loki loves belly rubs and chins scratches. Loki is a gentleman, a flirt, and an all round good companion. His first birthday is right around the corner and you guessed it! A forever home is at the top of his list!

Ezra.
This handsome sleek, red coated boy is Ezra. Ezra is a happy clown of a puppy. He just exudes love and good feelings. He is a people person. He forms a fast attachment and wants a home of his own to take care of and be safe in. The name Ezra means to help or support and I think this boy will happily fulfill those duties. Ezra is believed to be a Plott Hound Beagle mix. He can’t help it that hunting is bred in his nature. The best home for Ez would be an active one with a fenced yard. Ignored hound mixes can get in trouble so remember to keep him active. Couch potatoes need not apply. He would make a great jogging partner. Ezra was born 11/29/11. Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Ezra. n

John Carr, DVM
Dr. John Carr, a University of Tennessee graduate, has practiced in Greensboro since 1988. Prior to merging with Brassfield Animal Hospital in 2010, he owned and operated Carr Veterinary Hospital.
Why All the Fuss About Bloodwork? “Get me a CBC, chem seven, TP and ‘crit stat’!” If you watch popular television programs like Gray’s Anatomy, Private Practice or Animal ER, this may sound familiar. But what does it mean and what does it matter to you as a pet owner? These words refer to important blood tests that are performed by doctors to determine the health of their patients. You may have recently been asked to have wellness or pre-surgical blood tests performed on your pet. You probably wonder why they matter and what information does it provide to your pet’s doctor. These tests provide valuable insight into the well being of your pet and help veterinarians make informed decisions that increase our understanding of your pet’s health. Whether for an annual check-up or prior to a surgical procedure, bloodwork is beneficial for interpreting animals’ health since they cannot tell us if something has changed in their lives. We rely on you, the pet owner, to be observant regarding your beloved four-legged friends water intake, elimination habits, food intake and energy level. For some people this information is readily available, but in many busy households or for outdoor pets, this information is not easily determined. Veterinarians can determine a lot about a patient’s general health from a thorough physical examination and history. But we can not see if the internal organs are performing properly. The blood tests that we tailor to your pet’s age, state of health and past history provide additional information we can use to create specific health plans to keep your loved one around as long as possible and keep them healthy. Just like with people, the earlier we can find a problem, the more likely we will be in treating or managing that problem. And since our patients age at a rate of five to seven times faster than we do, annual blood tests are even more important. If you had a family member in the hospital, and your doctor recommended blood tests, when would you not want to do everything possible for them? That is the same for veterinary patients and many of the same tests are just as important. Let’s look at some of the common blood tests to see what we can learn: CBC (Complete Blood Count) - This test examines the cells in the blood stream. Blood is made up of liquid (plasma) and cells. The various blood cells have different jobs. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body. White blood cells help the body fight infection. Platelets control bleeding by forming clots. Changes in the cell counts can indicate anemia, infections, bleeding disorders, dehydration and the ability of the body to fight infections. Blood chemistries evaluate various internal organs such as the liver, kidneys, pancreas, heart and lungs. Early changes in these blood values may occur before your pet shows symptoms of disease. Also evaluating liver and kidney values are important before surgery since most anesthetics are broken down by the liver and removed from the body by the kidneys. BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) - Used to check kidney function. High levels relate to decreased kidney function. Low levels can be related to some types of liver disease. Creatinine - also related to kidney function. Tends to be a more sensitive measure to kidney disease. PHOS (phosphorous) - Elevated levels relate to kidney disease, mobilization of bone stores, bleeding disorders or hyperthyroidism.
ALT (Alanine aminotransferase) - A liver enzyme found in the liver cells. Elevated values related to active liver damage, cell leakage. It does explain the cause. AST (aspartate aminotransferase) - increases relate to liver disease, heart or muscle damage. SAP (Serum alkaline phosphatase) - increases can be related to liver damage, active bone growth in young animals, adrenal gland disease or in response to anti-inflammatory or seizure control drugs. TBili (total bilirubin) - increases relate to liver or gallbladder disease or destruction of red blood cells. GLU (glucose) - is a blood sugar. Used to test for diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemia or septicemia. ALB (albumin) - small molecular weight blood protein. Used to test for hydration, kidney disease, digestive problems, and liver or kidney problems. GLOB (globulin) - a blood protein that can increase with chronic inflammation and other diseases. CHOL (cholesterol) - used to aid in diagnosis of hypothyroidism, liver disease, Cushing’s disease and diabetes mellitus. AMY (amylase) - a digestive enzyme when elevated can be a sign of pancreatitis or kidney disease LIP (lipase) - elevated levels are associated with pancreatitis. Electrolytes - levels can vary with vomiting, diarrhea, Addison’s disease, or other metabolic diseases. HCT (hematocrit) - measures the percentage of cells in a volume of blood. Mostly made up of red blood cells, so a quick test for anemia. TP (total proteins) - indicates hydration level and provides additional information about the liver, kidneys and infectious diseases. So the next time you are told that your pet needs blood work done, you will hopefully better understand the purpose. If you have additional questions, please visit your local veterinary hospital. Many hospitals are able to perform these tests on site, giving you information the same day.

Shakespeare - and his sister
Regan - came to Red
Juliet came to Red Dog Farm after his owner lost his home in a major fire. Shakespeare is quite the lover and makes friends with everyone. Shakespeare is a more adventurous cat and enjoys exploring the house and socializing with his foster family. Shakespeare would love to find his new muse so he can get started on his next play. He would be happier being an indoor/outdoor kitty. He loves to sunbathe and explore the world too much to be cooped up all day long. He would love a kitty door to allow him free access back and forth or at least a porch to lay about when he wants to go outside. If he lived in a safe environment he wouldn’t mind being outside all the time especially if there are any butterflies to chase!
Dog Farm after being found wandering the streets of Greensboro. She is a sweet girl who would rather be in your lap snuggling than anywhere else. Regan is a well-behaved girl her who needs some “finishing school” manners. Regan gets along with other dogs, cats and people. She is house-trained and crate-trained. She has been spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated.

Chestnut & Mischief - came
Biscuit & Gravy were found abandoned in a local neighborhood. Fortunately for them, a nice young lady took them in and contacted Red Dog Farm. Both girls are very intelligent and aim to please. They are simply great puppies. Both Biscuit and Gravy are already starting to learn their basic manners and would do well with any family, large or small, willing to continue working with them. You couldn’t ask for two bigger love bugs. Both dogs have been spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped.
to us together and are very bonded, so we’d like to keep them together. They have been vaccinated and are adoptable. Chestnut (brown) is very social and will let you pet her. She has grown a beautiful long winter coat and must be an angora mix and she is wooly almost like a sheep. Mischief is still a bit timid but will come up for treats. They now are sharing their pasture with Basil and Clover (two of our other adoptable goats) and they all get along very well. They would make a great herd of four or two herds of two.

Destiny
Dutchess
– is a 15 year old Appaloosa who came to us with Venus (another adoptable horse) as referrals from animal control from a situation of horrible neglect. The third mare who was with them was too weak to stand and had to be euthanized on the scene. It is truly unbelievable to us that horses are in such awful situations right here in Guilford County. These girls are very thin but should make a full recovery. Our veterinarian has now examined Destiny, floated her teeth and given her vaccines. He estimates her to be 15 years old. Destiny has very nice ground manners and stood beautifully for vaccines. Once she gains weight, we will test her under saddle. We expect her to do well based on her ground manners.
- is an 8 year old Tennessee Walking Horse mare who came to us as a referral from animal control. She is a sweet, social girl who loves human affection. For someone with the experience to work with her, she will make an absolutely fabulous horse. Our veterinarian examined Dutchess, gave her all of her vaccines, floated her teeth and gave her a clean bill of health. She has also had her feet trimmed. She was a tad thin but not terrible, so we’ll have her up to a perfect body score in no time. One of our volunteers test rode Dutchess and though she was a good girl, it was obvious that she was nervous. So, he will be working on ground work with her for now to develop more confidence before we restart her under saddle.
If you are interested in adopting Destiny, please visit our website at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Tony.
I am an adorable silver tabby male kitten. My birthday is around December 6th. I am affectionate, sweet, and very playful. One of my favorite “toys” is an empty box where I hide so I can jump out and scare my foster sibs. I have been around dogs and little children. I just love everybody. Call AARF at 768-7387 if you are interested in adopting Tony. n
Millie.
How can you resist to this little face?! Precious Millie was trapped from a local colony but there is nothing feral about this sweetheart. Millie loves being petted and is so excited when she’s getting attention that she can’t hold still! But give her a few minutes and some quiet time and she’ll be out like a light at your side. She doesn’t mind being held, is social, and has wonderfully soft fluffy fur. She was born approximately September 2011, has been spayed and is up-to-date on shots. Call AARF at 768-7387 if you are interested in adopting Millie. n
Bailey.
Say hello to Bailey! She is a two year old boxer/lab mix, weighing approximately 55 lbs. Bailey was found abandoned and pregnant and gave birth to eleven puppies just a few days after being rescued. If you can give Bailey the loving home that she deserves, please come visit her at an AARF Adoption Fair! Call AARF at 768-7387 if you are interested in adopting Bailey. n

Kernersville Pharmacy is a compounding pharmacy, some may wonder what this term implies. We are trained to personalize medications for patients, both human and animal. Compounded medications are individual ingredients mixed together in the exact dosage form and strength required by the physician/veterinarian for the person/animal. We can make a small capsule dosage form for easier animal administration. We can also make liquids in popular pet flavorings. Examples are - red angus beef, tuna, peanut butter and chicken pot pie. These options make it easier to administer the medications. Kernersville Pharmacy also offers sugar free alternatives for animals with diabetes. PLO gel formulations are also sometimes required, these formulations allow medications to be administered topically and absorbed through the skin. We work with your physician/veterinarian to make medication administration as easy as possible. Let us know how we can help you. www.triadhappytails.com April 2012

Meadow, 1-1/2 years old, was found as a stray, and clearly suffered some indignities in the past. Not that you could tell it from her disposition, but from the fact that she is very skinny and has marks on her neck from a too-tight collar. Despite her past, she is about as sweet and lovely a girl as you Doberman Rescue of the Triad could want to know. She’s bright, inquisitive, and playful, mixed with humbleness and dignity in such a way that it is inspiring to see. She’s quiet and gentle, she absolutely loves to be petted, and she will sit or stand next to a person endlessly while they make over her. She comes when called, knows how to use a doggy door, and loves to chase a thrown ball. Visit www.doberman-rescue.com for contact information. n

Buddy is a German Shepherd/Akita mix. In November of 2011 he decided to find himself a home. He picked a nice looking porch and moved in. The lady of the house liked him a lot but circumstances kept her from keeping him. GSRA stepped in to help him find a permanent place to live. Around 2 years old, Buddy German Shepherd is good with dogs and considerate with Rescue & Adoptions older kids. He has a high prey drive so cats and smaller dogs may not be a good idea for him. He loves playing fetch and wrestling with his foster sister. Buddy also enjoys cuddling, watching TV and talking. Buddy’s perfect furever home would include an active family willing to continue his training, a canine sibling or two, lots of toys and a nice soft place to lay his head. Visit www.gsdrescue.org for more information. n
Cato is a 6-1/2 year old male who will make a great companion for some lucky family. He is very sweet and affectionate, but not demanding. His calm, reserved demeanor makes him very easy to live with. He can be shy and cautious when encountering new people and places, but he warms up once he has sized up the situation. He does well on a leash and has been around Triad Golden Retriever Rescue young children with no problems. His ideal family will have another dog and a big fenced backyard in which they can romp and play. He does not do well with cats or other small, non-canine animals. Although he is somewhat shy, Cato is a very good dog and will make a loving and loyal companion for someone who can give him structure and affection. Visit www.tgrr.org for more information. n
Skipper is a very happy, outgoing and energetic 2 year old Lab. He is a big goofy boy who wants nothing more than to be with his “people”. He follows them around the house and lays down, hoping for a belly rub. Skipper is very treat motivated and has learned many new commands, such as “shake”, “touch”, “down”, and “wait”. He has had a private training lesson and we recommend continuing his training. Skipper is crate trained and will happily go into the crate with the promise of a NC Lab Rescue peanut butter filled Kong. He can be rambunctious when he is first let out of his crate and may forget his manners. Since he can be a bit jumpy, his new home should have older kids. Skipper will only be adopted to a home with a physical fence. For more details, visit www.labrescuenc.org. n

Algoa Cryaway. Hello, my name is Algoa Cryaway, but everybody calls me Crissy! I am a petite two-year old. I am a beautiful, dark brindle girl. I love to play with the other dogs here at the kennels and love the attention I get from the volunteers. However, I don’t get along with cats very well, so if you have a home without Greyhound Friends of NC them, that would be great! Come visit me sometime, and see if you could be my new forever home. For more information, call Blanche Fedor at 336-601-7810, or email greytvolunteer@earthlink.net or visit the Greyhound Friends of North Carolina website, www.greyhoundfriends.com. n
Relay is a 3 year old, male, shorty Jack Russell Terrier who is beyond adorable! Relay was found as a stray dog and at the time, he only had a flea collar on and no microchip. The family who found Relay put up posters, went to the shelter and put an ad on Craig’s list. After 3 months, no one stepped forward to claim him. The family could not keep him and asked us to take him into rescue. Since arriving, Relay has been neutered, microchipped and is now up-todate on shots, plus heartworm negative. He Finding Great Homes weighs 10 lbs and is a loving, friendly dog for Jack Russell Terriers who loves people and other animals. Relay’s adoption fee is $300. To give Relay a great home, contact Robin at 336-414-1373 or Robin@insightrecruiters.com. n
Gretta.
Meet Gretta! She is a two year old larger pug. She was an owner surrender because her owner was up in age and was no longer able to care for her. She is spayed, up-to-date on routine shots, heartworm negative, and microchipped. Gretta is very sweet and loving and gets along with other dogs that are around the same age and energy level. She is a larger pug so she would be best suited for a family without small children. She wants a forever family to love her forever and hopes she Pug Rescue of NC will find them soon! Can you offer Gretta the home she is looking for? If you interested in offering Gretta a loving forever home, please put in your application at our website: www.pugrescuenc.org. n

Training Your Pet
Treadmill Training for Dogs? By Angela Craven
I
t’s raining for the fifth day in a row and Spot is starting to run laps around the house trying to burn his pent-up energy. There you are, standing on the couch while trying to avoid being run over, and wishing to yourself that you had a good way to relieve all his extra energy. As you look around the room you notice your treadmill in the corner. You then remember an article you read about how putting your dog on the treadmill was a great way to get much needed exercise when you are unable to get out for a walk. Many people find themselves in a similar situation; they have a dog that seems to never calm down, or is overly anxious when they leave. For these people and anyone in general, I recommend training your dog to walk/run on a treadmill. The benefits of teaching your dog to do this go past calming your anxious pup, it allows you to ensure that every day you have a means by which to exercise your dog, no matter the weather or even how late you get home. For those of you that have dogs that may be in need of rehabilitation due to an injury or accident, you can also use this method to control the speed and duration of their walk and limit distractions that may over excite your dog, causing them to re-injure themselves. You can also use this as a means to get your dog ready for a walk or even a training session. If you put your dog on the treadmill before going on a longer walk outside,
38
or before training sessions with him, your dog will be in a more focused state. Dogs that have a lot of energy are sometimes hard to control when you first start off on a walk or when you are reviewing their basic commands. Using the treadmill to drain some of this energy may make your session with your dog a much more positive experience which you will both enjoy. This was the case with one of my clients, a Soft Wheaton Terrier named Reese (pictured here). Reese is from a breed that is known to have a lot of energy and he was no exception. As we worked with him it became harder to have sessions in which he had any focus. Trying to work on leash walking was beginning to be more of a chore then a joy; this is when I suggested teaching him to run on the treadmill. We used this as a way to begin his day, so that teaching him to follow commands at the end of our sessions became easier and more rewarding. The best way to start this process is to get the dog used to the treadmill. You do not want to just take Spot and toss him on the treadmill, start it up and hope for good results. This will not yield a positive experience, and may in fact scare your dog enough to resist going back on the treadmill. Try putting your dog on leash, with only a flat collar (please no slip leads or prong collars, for they could cause injury when the treadmill is turned on; do not turn the treadmill on initially without an experienced trainer present). Lead the dog to the treadmill and bait them to get on using some form of reward. Have your dog stand or sit on the treadmill, with the treadmill off, for a few seconds then have them get off. Repeat this activity often until the dog is getting on without any resistance. You can even put this behavior on command by using a specific word when you want them to get on the treadmill. It is not recommended to go any farther without the help of an experienced trainer, to insure that you do not do anything that may harm your dog. A trainer will also be able to watch your dog and determine the best methods possible to get them to use the treadmill. Once your dog begins to get used to being on the treadmill you can vary the workouts based on how much walking you get to do with them in a day.
April 2012 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
Please remember as great as it is to walk or run your dog on the treadmill, it cannot replace the benefits gained by taking them for a walk yourself. The bonding, as well as the stimulation created by a daily walk, is not something being on the treadmill can simulate. This is just another tool to use to help you with keeping your dog as well exercised as you can.

Over the next couple of hours we took turns holding him, and we tried to take him for a walk, although he was not very cooperative. Many people came up and asked us if we were adopting Han Solo (which was his name at the time) and when we replied that we were thinking about it, they replied, “If you don’t, then I am going to.” Finally, as the fair was winding down and Han Solo slept in my arms, I looked over and Kristi had tears streaming down her face and without saying a word we knew we were taking this little guy home with us. The first order of business was to rename our new best friend, now don’t get me wrong I’m as big a Star Wars fan as the next person, but the name Han Solo just didn’t fit our little guy. After a few suggestions, we decided to name him Raylan, which is ironic since we named him after the gun toting Federal Marshall main character on the FX TV show Justified, and that just isn’t his style, but he seemed to take to the name pretty well. At first he liked to be by himself and didn’t really interact
