Bite Wounds - Dogs, Cats & Snakes…
Oh my!
M
any pets present to our animal hospital with bite wounds that may be from another pet or wildlife. Animal bite wounds can sometimes cause tissue necrosis (or die off) several days after the infliction of the wound and lead to sloughing of the skin. It is very important to seek help from your veterinarian as soon as possible. Most bite wounds can be very painful to your pets. They require immediate help in controlling their pain and assessing their risk for infection. Be careful handling your pet because they may be more likely to bite you since they are in pain. Snake bites can sometimes be identified by seeing the fang punctures but often the hallmark signs are rapid swelling, hemorrhage, and pain. They typically require more workup especially when it is an unknown type of snake. Venomous snakes can cause changes in blood pressure and it can affect clotting times in the blood. The doctor will decide what tests need to be run and if Antivenin (antivenom product) is necessary. Although Antivenin (AV) is really the only proven treatment for snake envenomation, many bites do not require AV and are considered dry bites. However, any patient with a venominduced coagulopathy (clotting disorder) or thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) needs AV. There are times where surgery may be indicated to debride (or cut away) dying tissue. Often times the deeper tissue in-
juries are worse than the visible injuries on the pet which can sometimes lead to multiple repairs or surgeries being necessary for total healing.
Important Points to Remember —Pets that are off leash or in a fenced-in area may come into contact with other animals, some of them not so friendly. If you see the perpetrator during or after the attack, especially if it’s a snake, please remember to give your veterinarian a detailed description if possible. —Try to keep your pet as calm as possible, protect yourself, they are scared and in pain, they may snap or bite you because of their discomfort. —Get to your veterinarian as soon as possible, early treatment lessens the suffering and possible long term negative effects. —Make sure your pet is up-to-date on all vaccinations, a bite from an unknown animal can prove tragic!

The Truth About Miniature Horses
An honest look at the pros and cons of keeping these undeniably cute creatures as pets
I
have a miniature horse named “Tater Tot,” and she is a fantastic pet. She is sweet and gentle, loves attention and treats, walks in the Summerfield Parade every year, and is always happy to serve as an equine ambassador at Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network events. When people meet Tater Tot, they usually first ask if she is a “baby horse,” and then want to know where they can get one. She is a great addition to our farm and family, but she did not start out that way. Tater Tot came to us timid and skittish. She had not been handled very much, and was not terribly trusting of people. She needed surgery for a locked stifle (sort of like knee surgery in people), and needed physical therapy at least thirty minutes per day after surgery. Her need for physical therapy was a great thing because it forced us to spend a lot of time with her, and we fed her about one thousand tiny carrots during that time period. She is now a great pet because we took the time she needed to build that relationship, and because we treat her like the horse that is she is (and not like a dog). This is very important because mini horses are horses, just in a smaller package. Miniature horses are not “baby horses” and they are not ponies. They were originally bred in Europe to pull carts in coal mines. They have all of the characteristics of a full sized horse, and
12

require almost all of the same care and training. The obvious difference is their size. In order to be registered with the American Miniature Horse Registry, miniature horses must be 34 inches tall or less at the withers (shoulders). They are a breed all their own, and the pros and cons of keeping them, in my opinion, are as follows:
PROS
1. They are CUTE. Really, really cute. And generally sweet, if they have been handled consistently and properly trained. 2. They are easy keepers as far as feeding goes. Because they are so much smaller than standard horses, they require far less feed, and can thrive on much less acreage. In fact, one of the challenges of keeping miniature horses can be keeping their weight down and preventing laminitis (founder), which they are especially prone to developing if they have access to too much grass in spring or fall. See more on founder in the “cons” below. 3. They can be trained to be quite useful. Some pull carts, some carry very small riders, and some are even being used as therapy horses and “seeing eye horses.” 4. They can be great companions to full sized horses, especially in situations where an owner does not have the space for two full sized horses.
August 2015 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
5. They live a lot longer than dogs – if well cared for, they can typically live from 25 to 35 years.
CONS
1. If not well trained and consistently handled, they can be wild, spunky and downright dangerous. Red Dog Farm has taken in over 40 miniature horses, most of which are surrendered because owners are fed up, can’t catch them, have been bitten or kicked, etc., generally because the mini horse has not been properly trained or handled. 2. They can kick and bite, just like a standard horse. It hurts a little bit less, but not much less. 3. Far too many colts are not gelded (neutered) because people either want to breed them or don’t want to spend the money to geld them. A miniature stallion who is not extremely well trained is dangerous and quickly becomes very hard to handle. I have an impressive scar from a bite I received from a foster mini who was surrendered as a stallion. Needless to say he was gelded the very next day. 4. They require the same veterinary and farrier care as a standard horse, and veterinarians and farriers don’t charge “mini” prices. Mini horse vaccines and hoof care is generally just as expensive as their standard sized counterparts.
5. They are not always great pets for children. Some are, if they have been well trained. But, too often we see skittish minis surrendered to us because they were fearful of (or aggressive toward) the young children they were intended for. 6. They founder very easily. The greatest challenge in keeping mini horses is providing them with enough space to get exercise without providing them with too much lush grass. Too much grass causes laminitis, which is excruciatingly painful to them (imagine your leg bone poking through your foot) and becomes a chronic condition. 7. They live a long time (25 – 35 years), so owners need to have a long-term plan for their care. So, would I recommend that you add a miniature horse to your family? Absolutely, so long as you have the time, the energy, a dry lot for spring and fall, ample space for exercise and play, at least one other equine to serve as a buddy, and the ability to pay the necessary veterinary and farrier bills for the next 25 – 35 years. If you do decide to add some miniature hoof prints to your farm, I hope that you will adopt rather than buy. There are already far more miniature horses in our area than there are suitable homes for them, and both Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network and the Guilford County Animal Shelter often have adoptable minis. Red Dog Farm actually has nine minis available for adoption as I write this. You can also search for miniature horses in other rescue organizations using Petfinder.com. If you are prepared and do your homework, adding a mini to your family farm can be one of the best decisions you make – and definitely one of the cutest!

Chance is a male Pit/ Lab mix dog, estimated to be about 5 years old. He is neutered, heartworm negative, up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped and on monthly flea preventative. Chance came to us from our local shelter. He was abused as a pup so he prefers females over males and would do better in a home with no Spay Stokes other dogs or cats. He is a very active boy so he needs daily exercise. He would do great as a dog with a job! He is super intelligent!

HEAT STROKE
S
ummer is a great time to get together with family and friends. As the weather warms, who can resist the temptation to be outdoors? We all want our pets to be a part of the fun! After all, they are your best friend and they always want to be with you. Exercise, playing at the park and cookouts are all great activities to enjoy this time of year. Even a nice car ride on the weekend sounds like fun. With a little fore-thought and precaution, these activities can all be enjoyed safely by you and your pet. As the heat and humidity increase during the summer months, so does the risk factors for heat related illnesses. Your dog or cat’s body temperature is regulated by a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. It maintains the normal body temperature. There are many highly sensitive receptors located throughout the body that act in coordination with the hypothalamus to conserve or release body heat as needed to maintain that normal temperature. In a healthy pet, when a rise in internal body temperature is detected by the brain, an elaborate cooling effort occurs to increase heat loss. This includes panting (evaporation), increased blood flow to skin to release heat externally by air movement over the skin (convection) and contact with cool surface (conduction), relaxed body position and decreased
production of body heat. This would be similar to the thermostat in your home detecting a rise in temperature above the set point and then signaling the AC unit to begin cooling. Without the thermostat, during hot weather, the temperature in your house could increase abnormally, resulting in the temperature being too high. This is exactly what happens to your pet in heat stroke. The ability to auto regulate the internal body temperature is lost and an elevated body temperature (hyperthermia) occurs. Heat stroke is a life threatening emergency, characterized by a non-fever induced, rapid elevation in body temperature. The disease has severe consequences including multi-organ failure, seizures and a high mortality rate. Two types of heat stroke are recognized in pets. They include exertional and classic heat stroke. Classic heat stroke occurs with exposure to high heat and humidity and lack of shade, ventilation, and access to water. Exertional heat stroke occurs during strenuous exercise in hot temperatures and/or high humidity without acclimating to the temperatures. Acclimating your pet to changes in the environmental temperature takes 60 days to fully occur. The classic example of heat stroke occurs to a pet trapped in a hot car. The car can quickly gain heat from the environment and cause an acute rise in the pet’s temperature. In a hot, parked car, the pet is unable to access two key abilities to cool, convection and conduction. Once their core body temperature rises above 104°F, the thermostat in the brain stops working, the body temperature continues to increase and cooling mechanisms fail. Your pet may experience excessive panting, anxiousness, disorientation, collapse, or convulsions. This disease can progress rapidly and, if unrecognized, can lead to death, even with appropriate treatment. Certain dog breeds such as small muzzle breeds (Boxers, bull dogs, Boston terriers, Shih Tzus), sporting breeds such as Labrador and Golden Retrievers (due to popularity and tendency to expose these dogs to strenuous exercise), overweight animals, puppies and senior dogs, and dogs with heart/lung disorders can be at higher risk for development of heat related illnesses. It is recommended to avoid the temptation to take your pet on errands in the car on hot days, acclimate your pets slowly to exercise, and exercise in early morning or late evening during cooler temperatures. If your pet shows symptoms of heat stroke, soak them with cool water or apply a cool, wet towel and get them to your local veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic immediately. Avoid ice and cold water as a method of cooling. So this summer, have fun with your pets, but please be safe. Realize the dangers that exist for your pet in the activities you do and take precautions to ensure you and your pet’s safety. Helpful links to refer to, during the summer months, before heading outdoors include: www.weather.gov heat index chart and the Hot Weather Tips by aspca.org.

RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com
Bauer is a 9 month old retriever
Carli
mix. He loves to play and has plenty of stamina to play a full set. He is a typical puppy with basic manners but needs someone willing to teach him even more tricks. Bauer is a smart and sweet boy so it should not be hard to show him the ropes around your house, the park, the trail, or where ever you prefer to go. He loves to be wherever you are, so the more adventures at home or out and about, the better for this guy. Bauer is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. He is ready to hit the road with you now for your next great adventure.
came to us the day after the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team won the World Cup so in celebration we decided to name her after one of the team members. Carli LOVES her lettuce and carrot sticks. She is a typical Guinea Pig in the sense that she likes attention but is a little shy at first. When things get too crazy around her foster home, she likes to take cover in her hide-away hole. But curiosity gets the better of her and out she comes again pretty quickly. You can also win her heart with the veggie treats. Carli would make a great pet for the right family who is willing to give her a little time, love, and care.

Gracie
Sun Drop
is a 20 year old paint mare with a great disposition! Gracie loads on a trailer with no problem. She loves to be groomed and stood nicely for her bath. Her foster family has groomed her all over without issue. We have not measured her height with a measuring stick yet but estimate her to be 15.1 or 15.2 hands. Her foster family named her Gracie because of her beautiful stride, she truly floats. Gracie’s adoption fee will be determined as we learn more about her.
is still looking for her forever home. Sun Drop’s mom wandered up to a local home right before having her litter of kittens; sadly, Sun Drop was the only survivor. The family realized that they could not care for another cat and reached out to us for help. Sun Drop is now weaned and ready to get out on her own. Sun Drop is up-to-date on vaccines, spayed and microchipped.

Scarlett & Company. These seven piglets were born on June 8th and are now ready for their forever homes! Potbellied pigs make great pets in the right environment, but quickly become unwanted when owners do not do their homework and have an appropriate home for pigs. We have taken in SO many unwanted pigs because the owners were promised a “teacup or “micro” pig and were told that pigs made good indoor pets. These little piggies will probably mature to between 80-130lbs. While they can be trained to come inside, use a kiddie pool as a litter box, etc., they are much happier and healthier if they have access to grass and a large, fenced area to root, play and graze. To give any of these sweet piglets a great home and for more information on pig care, visit our website at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Lulu
is a gorgeous 2 year-old mixed breed dog. We aren’t exactly sure what’s in the mix, but we are thinking Golden Retriever, possibly Chow, or maybe even a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. Your guess is as good as ours! Regardless, she is a phenomenal dog. She is just as sweet as she is beautiful! We rescued Maple from a local county shelter where everyone’s days are numbered. Her long fluffy coat is a must-feel and she is fantastic with other dogs!
and her sister were surrendered to the SPCA when their family had to relocate. She is super playful and energetic. Her sister Lacey was adopted this past summer. Lulu has been patiently waiting for a fur-ever home of her own for almost 2 years. Lulu is a 3 year-old Miniature Pinscher mix, full of fun and energy! She’s very well-mannered and knows when it’s time to settle down. She does not get along with other dogs and younger children but she does love cats! is an SPCA original, found as a stray in Myrtle Beach. He was adopted from the SPCA in the summer of 2014, hoping he had finally found his permanent family. Littermates Evelyn, Kingston and Teo have been waiting at the shelter since June for a home. From the outside they appear to be ordinary kittens, but they are actually classically trained ballerinas. They spin, twist, turn and leap with grace. The family does not need to be adopted together, but all kittens love company!
Meet Evelyn, Kingston and Teo at Forsyth County Animal Control or call 336-703-3647 for more information. Please ask for Animal IDs A313491, A313490 and A313489.

ANIMAL ADOPTION & RESCUE FOUNDATION 336.768.7387 / www.aarfanimals.org
Joe
is a friendly fellow who loves attention and lets you know with big purrs. He would probably do best in a household without young children but would love to have someone play with him. Although he has done well at the AARF house and gets along fine with other cats, the constant influx of cats and kittens from all sorts of situations is hard on Joe’s immune system as he’s an FIV+ kitty (not contagious to humans). He’s doing great now and with a warm and welcoming home of his own, we feel he can be the best he can be. Can you find it in your heart to give Joe a home of his own. You can meet Joe at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n
Wynne
is a one year old female with a convenient self packing feature. She’s also outgoing, affectionate and has the ability to go from zero to play on demand. Her quiet little motor can purr up a storm and she comes with standard tabby striping and stunning green eyes. If you are interested in meeting Wynne, come by one of our cat adoption fairs at 311 Harvey St, Winston Salem. Cat fairs are 12-6pm Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 12-4pm. Dogs are there Saturdays 12-3pm. n
Meet Pebbles,
Avery
a sweet 10 month old Pit Mix that was rescued by the Winston Salem Police Department and was brought to AARF. Kids were throwing rocks at her at the time the police drove up, so they immediately confiscated her. She is a wonderful, loving sweet little girl who loves attention and playing with other dogs.
is a cute tortoiseshell kitten. She and her littermates were abandoned at the AARF house with their mom. We estimate her date of birth as mid-April. Avery is one of the many kittens that are in foster care with AARF and waiting for that perfect permanent home. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n
Come meet Pebbles at an AARF adoption fair at 311 Harvey St. in Winston-Salem from noon to 3pm on Saturdays. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within one hour of Winston-Salem. Visit www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption process. n
Trixie
Felton
was rescued from a nearby high kill shelter. She has been spayed and is doing well with housebreaking and leash-training, though she’s already crate-trained. Trixie loves to be around people and would love a home with lots of attention. Older
is a very sweet young fellow who is the last of a litter from a rescued mother who gave birth to 7 puppies. He enjoys going on hikes and snuggling with his foster mom. He is well trained and would be a wonderful new member of any family. Oh, and he loves playing with cats! You can meet Felton on Saturdays between noon and 3 at 311 Harvey Street in Winston Salem. Due to a home visit we cannot adopt outside a one hour radius of Winston Salem. Visit www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption process. n

Carly
Meli
is a very affectionate 10 year old spayed Tabby Tortie. She is very shy around new people, but warms up fairly quickly. Carly would much rather be petted or brushed than play with toys, but will occasionally swat at a string of yarn. Carly is a bit of a night owl and spends most of her days lounging around and is up and moving more at night. Carly does not get along well with other cats, but she was not bothered by my small dog. I think she would be best suited and less shy if she was the only animal, but I think she would warm up to other animals slowly. She is litter box trained and upto-date on her vaccines. Carly has so much love to share and would make a great addition to your family.
is a beautiful sleek black adult cat, around 9 years old. She and her sister Dali were surrendered back to HSAC in the spring ‘2014. Beyonce
estimated to be between 1-2 years old. Mikey loves to have his head scratched and wants nothing more than to be near his people. He is a shy boy at first, but warms up very quickly once he realizes he is safe. We are sure there was some trouble in his past but he has not let that deter him from loving people. When taken out on a regular schedule, he does well. Seemingly totally house-trained. He plays well with the other dog in his foster home is good with older children, but we have not seen him around smaller ones yet. He is a little too curious about cats, and thinks they would be fun to chase so a home without cats would be better.
(aka Baby Girl) is Super Sweet! Her foster mom says she is a wonderful dog. She was born around 4/2010. She is well behaved in the house and house-trained. Beyoncé gets along with dogs and cats and loves the 3 year old child she is living with. She sleeps good at night and loves to play during the day!! Smart gal! She is a big fan of giving kisses. Beyoncé loves being outside in the evenings when it’s cooler and seems to be a Chow mix of sorts!

Burbank came to us from a loving home where he'd been since a pup. The thing is, one day the small child that he lived with grabbed him in his most tender place and, in the moment of shock and discomfort, he snapped at the child. It unnerved his family, who of course could not be sure that the small child would not do such Doberman Rescue of the Triad a thing again. He's excellent on leash, has a favorite stuffed "tuffy toy" that he loves to carry around and is a total lap dog - literally. If allowed, he loves to climb up and be held. Overall, he's a quiet, observant, intelligent boy with a playful disposition, who is waiting to settle once more into a loving family situation. Read more about Burbank online at www.doberman-rescue.com. Make an appointment to meet him after your application has been approved. n

Training Your Pet
HE KNOWS THAT! by Jan Wilson, Dog-Gone Fun
“He knows how to sit. He is just being stubborn!” That is a common
phrase when a dog is not following through with an obedience command. Because a dog is able to sit and perform other commands in his own home with no distractions, does not mean he is able to maintain the same performance in ALL situations. Sitting in front of the owner with no distractions is part of a kindergarten education. To successfully listen and obey its owner in a situation of high distraction is a high school exercise. There is a lot of practice and training between kindergarten and high school. Before blaming your dog’s flawed personality for his disobedience, let’s analyze whether he has the education and ability to do what you ask. Is your dog Physically Able to perform the obedience command? Is he hesitating when you ask him for eye contact, for a sit or a down, even when there is nothing to distract him? It could be a physical problem and certain movements may be painful. Looking up at you could be painful if your dog has a back or neck issue. The commands sit and down may be difficult for a dog with joint problems or hip dysplasia. Consider this especially if your dog suddenly refuses to follow through, when he has willingly done so in the past. Lack of Knowledge. Does your dog really know the command? Like any skill, obedience commands take many repetitions and many different environments to learn. Start in an environment with no distractions, just the two of you within your home. You can slowly add distractions, assuring to build on your dog’s previous success. For example, when your dog is successful sitting consistently in your home, begin practicing outside with few distractions. When this is successful, ask for a sit with other people present, near a car, on the sidewalk, in a park, in a park with other children, etc. Dogs do not generalize well. Your dog may have learned that the command “sit” means come and face my owner and sit. They have not generalized that sit can happen in many different places, beside the owner, behind, or from a distance. You can never assume the dog knows this. Emotional State. The situation when obedience is needed most is often the time when your dog is least likely to have the ability to follow through. This is when he is stressed, fearful or very excited and overly stimulated. His ability to think clearly and follow through on commands in the face of strong emotion is a skill that takes a lot of repetition. It must become almost automatic. If the dog is over threshold, so over stimulated that he literally can’t think, he cannot
42
August 2015 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
hear you or obey commands. The best action is to remove the dog from the situation. He certainly is not being stubborn! Consistency. Are you teaching your dog to ignore your commands? Scenario: You ask your dog to down while you talk briefly to a neighbor, a command he is comfortable with. He does not down and wanders away. You do not go get him and place him back on a down because you are in the middle of a conversation. You have just taught your dog that he does not have to listen. Dogs do what works for them and the next time you ask for a command he will know he has a choice. He is not stubborn, just smart! The next time you're about to say “He is just being stubborn” stop and think about the situation from your dog’s point of view. Are you being fair? There is an old saying in the dog training world: Train don’t complain!

Spotlight on Dirty Dogs
Dirty Dogs
The Birth of a Self Service Dog Wash
T
here I was again, on my knees, bent over my bathtub, trying to give my two uncooperative Cockapoos, Molly and Oscar, a bath. I had two towels under my knees to cushion them from the hard tile floor. The sudsy Molly and Oscar were jumping in and out of the bathtub, shaking dirt and suds all over the bathroom walls and this was just the beginning of their bi-weekly bathing process. I still had to take them to the basement and try to dry them with my blow dryer. Certainly another chase would ensue during this process as well. There had to be a better way….there had to be another bathing option in between their regular grooming appointments. After a lot of research, thought and planning, we opened Dirty Dogs Self Service Dog Wash on September 1, 2012. I remember how confident Steve and I were on opening day… we had thought of everything…we had left nothing to chance… it would be smooth sailing…and then we unlocked the door for business. Clearly we had not thought of everything, as midway through the first day we had two broken grooming arms, cumbersome gallon shampoo bottles that customers could not easily work with and hair, hair, hair everywhere. But what a good time we had, even in the face of these mishaps. Customers were happy and we were having a great time with them and their dogs. Full Service was also a great learning experience for us. One of my favorite stories is about Jet, one of our Great Pyrenees customers. He is so sweet and playful and became an instant favorite of mine. So imagine for a moment, I have Jet in the tub and we are all sudsed up, Jet is licking me and I’m telling him how great he is. I stood up for a second to get the ear wipes on the ledge
44
August 2015 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
above the tub and Jet decided he wanted to jump up on my shoulders. In a flash, I was on the floor on my back, and Jet who was on an extra long tether (clearly in hindsight not the best idea) was on top of me, suds and all, licking me. I can’t move. STEVE HELP, I yelled. Steve immediately came to my assistance while laughing hysterically. This is just one of many great stories we can tell about our daily lives at Dirty Dogs. Today, Three Years Later Almost three years later, we are still providing self service and full service dog washing. We have worked out most of the kinks and now the store operates like a well oiled machine most days. We strive everyday to live up to our motto….No Mess, No Stress, Lots of Fun. Superior customer service is our goal, day in and day out. We call it “Self Service”, but we use that term loosely. We are always available to help, instruct, and answer questions. We have families who make washing their dog an outing, kids in the tubs helping dad and mom wash their dog. We get to see breeds like Gordon Setters, New Foundlands, Great Pyrenees, Afghan Hounds, Bulldogs, Saint Bernards, Old English Sheep Dogs, Blue Heelers… as well as the breed favorites…Golden Retrievers, Labs, Shepherds, Doodles and Poos. We have show dogs, agility dogs, service dogs,
rescues….they come in all shapes, sizes and personalities. Every day is different and every day is extraordinary. Products We Offer In addition to our pup services, we also offer locally made all-natural treats, collars, leashes, and toys made in the USA. Just like our services, quality is of the utmost importance for our retail offerings. For example, we are the exclusive distributor of Planet Dog Toys in Greensboro. Not only are their toys guaranteed to be durable and made in the USA, they contribute two percent of all proceeds to the training and placement of service dogs. Molly loves her snoop and when I put kibble in it she is 100% focused on it until she figures out how to get all of the kibble out. I can’t tell you how many stuffed toys I have bought my dogs, only to have them end up in a pile of stuffing in the floor after ten minutes. Then we began carrying West Paw stuffed toys made in Bozeman, MT. Molly and Oscar have a West Paw teddy bear that they have had for over a year. It is without a doubt their favorite toy and gets played with daily…guess what? It is still intact. It’s a stuffed dog toy miracle. Our treats, made in Raleigh by Gourmutts Bakery and arcBARKS in Greensboro, NC are super popular. They look good, taste good and contain all natural ingredients such as peanut butter, yogurt and carob sprinkles. Our Collars are made right here in Greensboro by Yellow Dog Designs and are a big hit with all of our customers. They are unique, colorful, and quality made. New at Dirty Dogs So what’s new at Dirty Dogs? In June, we began offering our “Gentle” Grooming Services. Steve and I wanted to offer grooming where the dogs temperament and tolerance for the grooming process is taken into consideration first and foremost. This philosophy makes our pup customer’s experience much more enjoyable and we feel it is imperative to their well being over the long term. Just like our self service and full service offerings we wanted our “Gentle” Groom to be a great customer experience for our customers and their dogs. If you haven’t tried us, we hope to see you soon. If you are already a valued customer, we want you to know how much we appreciate your business. It is because of you that we are successful and continue to strive for excellence every day.

is a sweet and shy Golden Mix who weighs around 50 lbs. She is initially cautious in new situations, but once she gets comfortable, she warms up nicely. She gets along well with her foster Golden brothers and sisters and doesn't seem to mind cats. She loves attention and especially belly rubs. Jeni enjoys going on walks (she is excellent on a leash) and gently taking treats from her humans. Jeni rides well in cars, and is learning basic obedience commands. Triad Golden She quickly learns from observing her Retriever Rescue housemates, and would do well with other animals in her forever home. Jeni would also thrive in a home where she receives a lot of attention and affection to make her feel comfortable and safe. Visit www.tgrr.org for more information. n

The Pet Responsibility Program Visits Monarch’sCompanions on a Journey in High Point
Companions on a Journey learned some important facts, while having lots of fun! Discussed were some key points of Pet Responsibility such as - food and plenty of fresh water daily, vaccinations to prevent serious illness or disease, and the importance of spay/neuter to prevent pet overpopulation. Here Jan introduces Olive to Azalea.
Want to see some eyes light up and smiles on happy faces? Recently three volunteers visited Monarch of High Point and gave a spirited presentation. Jan Donahue, Karen Gibson and Olive (a Boston Terrier) entertained and educated participants in Monarch’s day program called, Companions on a Journey, about being responsible for their family pets. The Guilford County Pet Responsibility Program is a volunteer program taught to 4th grade students. The main “Jan and Karen did an awesome focus of the program is teaching job. These volunteers work with students about the importance of the Guilford County Pet Responsispaying and neutering to prevent bility Program, and shared imporpet overpopulation. The six tant information in an entertaining week program also focuses on fashion, which was a big hit!” how to care for family pets. It says Eileen Reilly with Monarch includes a total of six 45 minute of High Point. lessons. The 3rd week includes animal therapy visits provided by the North Carolina Pet Partners, a Community Partner of Pet Partners. Occasionally, a shortened version of the program is presented to other groups throughout Guilford County. Pet Responsibility provides basic information about the needs of animals (nutritious food, fresh water, warm and dry shelter, exercise, etc.). Also included in their message, is the importance of regular trips to a veterinarian to keep their pets safe, healthy, up-to-date on vaccinations plus, the importance of having pets spayed or neutered to prevent pet overpopulation. They are also cautioned on how to safely handle encounters with unknown animals. Olive, the therapy dog, demonstrated the proper way to walk your pet, give treats to a dog, groom your pet and in general some of the responsibilities of owning a pet. Olive also modeled her leash, her

collar which included a tag with ID and life vest. The group had a great time walking her around the room and interacting with her. Jan and Karen asked the group questions such as, “Why is it important to walk your dog on a leash? Or, why should your pet visit the veterinarian?” The question and answer process was a lot of fun and generated a few laughs! The group learned some valuable lessons while having a great time. I think we all learned something that day. It was such a happy experience to watch the power of the human pet relationship. Everyone in the room was smiling and laughing, a good time was had by all. Pets have such a positive effect on people and this wonderful program enforces this bond. Olive, the therapy dog, models her life vest, showing the importance of water safety. Below, Jonathon (bottom left) gets a lesson on grooming, an important part of responsible pet ownership. John (bottom right) demonstrates the correct way to offer a treat.
