Letter from the Editors
Welcome to Jennifer Frazier
T
he year is coming to an end, the days are getting shorter and colder. Let’s all remember our animal friends that may need a warm shelter and plenty of food to see them through the winter months. Organizations such as Project B.A.R.K. provide shelter for outside pets. Please see our website for contact information if you or anyone you know needs their help. Our “Ask the Vet” column gives some valuable tips for pet owners during the holiday season. It’s easy to get caught up in the rush and forget to safeguard and plan for our animal companions. If you have travel plans, do not forget to book early with your sitter or boarding facility, they fill up quickly! As usual, we have some good gift ideas for pet owners and pets included in Triad Happy Tails Magazine. We urge you to try and use their products and services whenever possible, they are local

business people. If not for their support, we couldn’t continue to publish our magazine. We would like to take this opportunity to remind our readers to please think very carefully when giving an animal as a gift. This is not a toy or a novelty that can be easily put aside when one tires of it. Our shelters and rescue organizations are overflowing with unwanted pets if you are looking for one to give the right person. But never surprise anyone with a new pet because the new “gift” could end up in a shelter as an unwanted pet. Our Animal Welfare and Rescue List has moved to our website, www.TriadHappyTails.com, just click on the Shelters & Rescue link. This gets you in touch with more than 50 area animal rescue organizations, a more convenient way to contact them.
Have a safe and happy holiday.

Brandtley is a very sweet guy who has a lovely, somewhat submissive personality. He seems like he’d be a good family dog, especially with older kids who could toss him balls and run around a fenced yard with him. He’s crate trained and never has an accident in his room. he definition of rescue is to free or save from danger or evil. As animal rescuers, we take it one step further, not only do we want to free pets from danger, we strive to place them in the best homes possible. We interview, perform background checks and visit homes before we decide if a family is the right match for a pet. Nothing feels better than bringing together the perfect combination of a pet and people! This is especially rewarding when it is a “special” dog or cat. They really are all special to us, but there are some that have required more intensive rehab before being deemed adoptable. Onyx is a dog that happens to fall
into this category. One day we received a call about a dog who had been hit by a car. Luckily, we had the space and funds available to help. The black chow mix was taken to the vet for a thorough exam where x-rays showed two shattered hips. Although she had to be in terrible pain, this sweet dog showed no aggression at all towards the staff. She was given the name Onyx and was taken to our kennel for some R & R. The doctor prescribed at least four weeks of cage rest. This meant Onyx had to be carried out for all of her potty breaks. Someone had to support her body as she used the bathroom. Onyx was so tolerant of all of this. She almost seemed to enjoy the pampering and attention. On pretty days we would place her in the grass so she could enjoy the fresh air. She watched the other dogs play and seemed so content. At her one-month check up appointment, the vet gave her the ok to start to walk on her own. Onyx started out with a little limp, but as time went on she was as good as new! It was time to find the right family for Onyx. Below is Onyx soon after being rescued. Left, a recent photo of Onyx having fun at the beach.

She loved people, dogs and was cratetrained, so we quickly found someone interested in Onyx. A single young lady in Winston-Salem wanted a dog just like her to be her companion and jogging buddy. All of our adoption procedures went smoothly and Onyx was soon delivered to her new home. As I left her there she seemed extra anxious. I explained to her new mom that this is common with rescues that have been with us a while and it might take a few days for her to feel relaxed. I headed back to High Point hoping that Onyx would fall in love with her new owner. Only two short hours later I received the panicked phone call saying that Onyx had run away. I immediately drove to Winston with a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. This was a first for me and it did not feel good at all. I searched the neighborhood until dark with no luck. I put her crate and some clothing with my scent on it on the porch with the hope that she would stay nearby. Day after day I made the trip to Winston to search. I posted flyers everywhere and did all I could to spread the word. On day six, I received a call from the neighbor who saw Onyx on the porch with the clothing I had left there. They tried to catch her, but she would not come to them. My husband and I went to get her and as we placed her in the truck we could not decide whether to kiss or to spank her. We decided to kiss her! She sat in the back seat like nothing had happened and I swear if she could talk, I think she would have said, “what took you so long?” I slept like a baby that night and I bet Onyx did too. Onyx was deemed a flight risk and the decision was made that she could only go to a family with a fenced yard. A few months later a very nice family in Raleigh inquired about Onyx. They had a fenced yard and had experience with chow mixes with similar
Cover Story
personalities. They seemed like the perfect fit. So we took a trip to Raleigh and settled Onyx into her new home. The yard was very secure and this family seemed like they were made just for her. I left Raleigh that day with a bittersweet feeling, so glad that this family had come along, but also worried. That evening I called to check on her and things were going great. An eternal worrier, I called or emailed daily to check on her progress. The family was very understanding and I promised them that after a while I would leave them alone. After the first week passed, I started to relax. She seemed to have bonded with them. On day ten, I received the dreaded phone call. Onyx had slipped out the door and taken off! NO!! Not again!! Luck and prayers had been on my side the first time, but now she was three times as far away in a much larger, busier city! My schedule was too busy to allow a trip to Raleigh, so I asked the owner to post flyers and do all he could to find her. Day after day, I spoke with the frantic owner who said people were spotting her, but no one could catch her. Every day that went by caused my heart to sink as the reality of finding her seemed more distant. On day four, I was finally able to go to Raleigh. The plan was to call her new owner as I got nearby so he could help me look in the places she had been seen. I knew the odds
of finding her were slim, but there was no way I could not give it my best shot. Rescue – save from danger – I had to do it! We were only about three blocks away when my cell phone rang. “You are not going to believe this” was the first thing I heard, “Onyx just walked back into our yard!” Unbelievable! We all were so overjoyed! This poor family had shared my worry all week. We were all exhausted from three sleepless nights and they felt responsible for her escape. Although this family loved her, we all felt it would be best if Onyx returned to High Point with us. Apparently, my idea of what Onyx needs and wants is not the same as hers! I thought finding a family would be the best thing for her, but Onyx already has the family she wants right here with us. For some people home is a huge, fancy mansion. Others are at home in a cozy, quaint cottage. There are even some who enjoy the freedom of life on the road in an RV or on the water in a boat. But one thing is the same for all creatures, two or four legged, home is where your heart is. Meet Brownie, top right and Shadow, bottom right. Both are looking for their forever homes. Please call Loving Pet Inn Adoptions at 336-393-0000 if you are interested in adopting either of these precious dogs.
Loving Pet Inn Adoptions is dedicated to finding loving homes for animals in need. Dara Lamberson, President of Loving Pet Inn Adoptions, rescued her first dog over 25 years ago. Holiday Hazards and Travel Tips
Guilford-Jamestown Veterinary Hospital Offers Some Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe During the Holidays The holidays can be a stressful time for us, but let’s not forget that our furry companions may by stressed out too! Think about it, we are decorating, entertaining, packing, wrapping, cooking, cleaning, traveling and so on while out pets sit and watch in dismay. They have no idea what’s going on, but they do know they like the way that turkey and ham smell. They also think all those shiny, sparkling things you’ve hung up everywhere look like great fun to play with… and maybe eat… just a little. So, 5 tips to get you and your pets, through this most joyful, but stressful time of the year. 1. Car travel – if you plan on taking your furry friend with you be sure to have the following: Vaccination history, secure / safe crate, extra food and bottled water. What you may also need from your veterinarian: anti nausea medication, sedative, health certificate. 2. Air travel –check with the airline to see what are their requirements for companion animals. Usually a health certificate is required and if you are traveling outside of the US you must meet the requirements of the country you plan to enter. Some countries require testing that must be planned months in advance. Check to make sure that your pet’s crate is secure and the proper size. Some smaller pets may be allowed to ride in the cabin with you, so make sure their carrier can fit. Your veterinarian may also recommend a sedative to help your pet relax during the plane ride. 3. You’re traveling / your pet is boarding – always find out what are the vaccination requirements at the boarding facility. If the facility has no vaccination requirement, this should be a red flag, do not go there! Ask what they feed the pets during their stay. If your pet has a sensitive stomach or special dietary requirements, make sure they can accommodate those requirements. Consider taking time to visit the facility prior to your trip. The staff should be friendly and the facility should be clean. Most importantly, if your pet has health issues that require special attention and / or medication, talk to your veterinarian prior to boarding and ask if boarding them at the animal hospital is possible. Many animal hospitals offer boarding for their clients. This offers a safe place for your pets, staff members familiar with their health problems and the equipment to handle medical emergencies.
4. Avoid holiday toxin exposure - chocolate, poinsettias, mistletoe, to name a few. Every year there is a poor little dog at the hospital because they ate chocolate. Unsweetened baking chocolate carries a much higher dose of the toxin theobromine than does milk chocolate. Regardless of the type of chocolate, always contact your veterinarian immediately. Chocolate toxicity can be very serious and can result in death. Poinsettias, although very pretty, are also very irritating to the mouth and GI system of animals that eat them. The good news is that they actually are not as toxic as once thought and rarely cause serious illness in an otherwise healthy animal. Mistletoe should be keep away from pets. There are several different type of Mistletoe, some cause mild GI upset, while other can cause severe liver, heart and / or neurological problems. If your pets consume any type of plant and you are not sure if it is toxic, contact your veterinarian immediately for advice. 5. Dietary indiscretion – turkey, ham, steak, pies, cakes and cookies. Most pets will gladly eat our holiday meal with us, if we let them and sometimes even if we didn’t mean to let them! Dietary indiscretion is the most common cause of diarrhea in dogs and if left untreated can lead to life threatening conditions such as pancreatitis. Early treatment is very important. Don’t wait until your poor pup is vomiting and not eating before you call your veterinarian. Most importantly, though this is a time of sharing, don’t share your food with your pet… they will still love you!

Playing with his toys, demanding attention and lots of lap-time from his foster mom, and hanging out in his sunny window watching the world go by, are what Zach is all about.

what looks like a wedge of cheese on his nose giving him a comical look. Living up to his court-jester appearance, Cheddar is always clowning around with his brother and entertains everyone. Mild mannered Colby loves people so much that when he meets you, his tail wags like dog. Affectionate and playful with his foster family and brother Cheddar, Colby is the perfect balance of fun and love. Cheddar and Colby are one cheese combination you won’t want to live without!
petite and pretty black Persian with enormous gold eyes. She is small and compact weighing only 7 pounds, one pound of which is fur! She gets along with other cats but would be fine on her own as long as she has a lap to curl up on. And the good news is you can wear your black pants without looking like you just stepped out of a fur vault!

Julius, our little orange

tabby boy, lives up to the reputation that orange kitties are just plain nice! Friendly to all the other cats and kittens, he loves his human family equally, and rewards all with his loud purr. Aside from playtime with his kitten brothers and sisters, Julius’ favorite thing is mealtime. Because of his hearty appetite, Julius has become healthy and strong. So, if you are you looking for special friend, then you can’t go wrong with Julius!
Bon-Bon & Tootsie are sweet little confections that won’t affect your waistline! Bon-Bon is a very beautiful Siamese, with her soft creamy fur and baby blue eyes. She loves to be the center of attention, and like all Siamese, she will let you know it if she feels you are not lavishing enough attention upon her! Tootsie, a little tortoiseshell kitty, was placed in the litter with her adoptive sister, Bon-Bon. Though mama-cat Dulce took her in, tiny Tootsie forgot how to nurse, so she needed to be bottle fed. Consequently, Tootsie is very attached to people as well as to Bon-Bon. If you are looking for the dream pair of kittens, her they are!

Kevin Bacon.
This adorable little guy was found by a Good Samaritan as a piglet (he must have fallen off the truck!) and nursed back to health. He is very social and will make a great pet in a farm environment. He will be a BIG guy when full grown (like up to 500 pounds big) so he will need a large enclosure and lots of food. Pigs are very smart and can be taught to do all sorts of tricks. If you are interested in adopting Kevin, please visit our website, www.reddogfarm.com. n
Sheena was originally a Hurricane Katrina survivor as an 8 week old kitten. Unfortunately for Sheena, her original owner was unable to keep her so Sheena has moved in to RDF and is now looking for a new home. Sheena’s quite the lap cat and loves to be petted. She is used to being an indoor only kitty and has great house manners; she was even trained to not go into certain rooms of her previous house. She has an absolutely gorgeous coat and the sweetest personality you will ever meet. If you are looking for a lap kitty to lounge around with, then Sheena is your dream girl! If you are interested in information about adopting Sheena, please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n
Ringo was originally found hog
Edgar came to Red Dog Farm after being found in a tree by a gentleman who didn’t know how to handle him, so he lost part of his tail. The next day, the gentleman drove around for hours with Edgar in the back of a truck in the pouring down rain trying to sell him. A very kind woman rescued him from his cold situation and got him in to the vet to warm him up and get treatment for his tail. He has now received a clean bill of health and will eventually grow part of his tail back. Edgar needs a specially designed environment to help him stay warm enough and healthy to live a full life. Edgar doesn’t mind being handled and is a friendly young Iguana. If you are interested in adopting Edgar, your may visit our website www.reddogfarm.com. n
Ruby arrived at Red Dog
Farm after being found as a stray roaming the streets of Greensboro. She is a very smart loving girl who just wants companionship and a job to keep her entertained. Ruby is still learning basic doggie manners and leash training. She will need someone willing to spend a little extra time with her but she is very eager to learn. We think she is one lucky dog and will make someone a very happy and loyal friend.
If you are interested in more information about adopting Ruby, please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n
The Cars2 Kittens.
tied with a slit throat and tossed in a ditch to die. Fortunately for him, he made it to the Guilford County Animal Shelter where the staff and volunteers worked diligently to save him and to make sure he stayed healthy. Today, Ringo has a very small scar on his neck from where it was cut and his wounds from being tied up have healed. He is a typical curious, active puppy that appears to have no emotional or mental scars from his abuse. Ringo has been very fortunate in so many ways and is just happy about life and to be alive. Now all he needs is to find his forever family.
Meet Flo, Sally, Sherriff, Ramone and Mater. These five make one adorable pile of kittens! They were found abandoned on the edge of a road at two weeks old along with their Mom. All kittens are very inquisitive, love the other animals in their foster home and adore their two little human siblings, too! We know they will make an excellent pet for any family. They use the litter box well and enjoy playing with their toys. With those cute faces and sweet personalities, they won’t be around long! Our website has additional pictures of each kitten.

Sophia. My name’s Sophia,
and I’m a black and white cat with a lot of love to give. Since I have lived at the Guilford County Animal Shelter since January 2011, I’m a bit depressed. I may seem aloof, but quite the opposite is true…I want someone to love me and take me home. Please give me a chance to show you what kind of cat I really am. I’m eleven years young, healthy and have a lot of good years left in me. My wish is not to spend an entire year in a kennel, if you have it in your heart to take in a lovable mature lady, I’m your girl.
Thanks, Sophia. Call Guilford County Animal Shelter and ask for more details, Sophia’s ID # is A12213420. Sophia is sponsored by Hairworks by Dianne

Tortie-Girl.
Hi, I am a petite, sweet, female tortie kitty. I was found as a stray on a cold and rainy winter day. I was very thin and very hungry and I didn’t feel well at all. Since being rescued, I have been fed and cared for, and now I am all better, and ready to find my forever home. I’m looking for a home where I can be an indoor kitty and if I could find a family that is looking for a sweet girl to love on, well. . .life would be purr-fect! I have been fully vetted and spayed. If I sound like your kind of girl, let’s meet! Tortie’s adoption fee is $85. Call 336-438-2023 and leave a message or email hsac@netpath.net to find out more about Tortie-Girl. n
Bonnie.
Looking for a family seeking a fun and friendly challenge. I am house-broken and do my business outdoors, never inside. I adore being outside in a large fenced-in yard. Currently, I share the dog lot with other dogs but it took me a little while to adjust to the company. It’s ok for now... but at first it was a little overwhelming if you want to be top dog, or maybe share the glory with one other dog. Some of my passions are hiking, eating and lounging in the yard. I’m 8 years old and I love kids, although smaller ones sometimes get knocked over by my affection. Call 336-438-2023 and leave a message or email hsac@netpath.net to find out more about me. n

T-Bone.
Meet T-Bone is a 1-2 year old Mastiff/Boxer mix. He’s a very sweet boy that gets along just fine with cats and other dogs. T-Bone is negative for heartworms and will be neutered before adoption.
If you are interested in adopting this handsome boy, please e-mail the Humane Society of Alamance County at hsac@netpath.net or call our office at 336-4382023. T-Bone is looking for his forever home and he’s hoping it won’t be long! n
Faline.
I was found in a parking lot where a nice guy took me to an HSAC volunteer and they learned I’d already been spayed. See, I was someone’s special baby at one time. They must have moved on because I ended up scrounging for food and a warm place to stay. They also tested me and I was positive for FIV. It is not contagious to humans, nor to other cats unless an infected cat is a biter. I am very gentle and sweet. I need to be an indoor kitty, just to make sure another mean or sick cat does not pick on me and compromise my health, but I am happy as a clam indoors. If you have a kitty who is FIV+, I’d make a great companion to him or her! Call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net to adopt me.

Inky is a special girl looking
a forever-home with her sister Inky. She’s quite social so it won’t take her long to acclimate and coax Inky to play. Minky will politely follow you around, hoping to get noticed for being such a good girl. She loves being rewarded with a good rub down or brushing. Minky and Inky are a very nice, quiet pair and they get along well with other cats. Because they are practically joined at the hip, the girls must be adopted together.
for her forever-home. Inky and her sister Minky are a little on the shy side, Inky more so than Minky. They have come a long way, socially, since first being rescued together as kittens over 2 years ago. They have been strictly indoor pets, both are healthy, spayed, and up to date. Once feeling comfy, Inky will come around and talk to you--usually in the evening (she knows the vet’s office is closed for the day). She likes to be petted, but not picked up and hurled over your shoulder like Minky does. Because they are practically joined at the hip, the girls must be adopted together.
Call 336-438-2023 and leave a message or email hsac@netpath.net to find out how you can adopt Inky & Minky. n

Boo & Janet.
Hi, my name is Boo. I’m a beautiful black tabby, that’s me wrapped up warm and cozy in the pink blanket. I’m only three months old and already had a rough start in life. I was lost. . . they found me in a monsoon rain in the middle of a major road. SCARY! But I’m safe now! They brought me to this nice, warm place where there are other playmates which is a good thing because I love to play! See Janet, below? She’s one of my playmates. She’s a sleek, gray tabby, one month older than me. She’s pretty cool, she loves to play with me and the other kitties and she likes the human variety also. We’re both fully vetted, healthy as can be. Well, gotta go, the smell of fish treats in the air. . . If you’re looking for some sweet kitties, email Beth Blevins at just_waggin@yahoo.com. Our adoption fees are $50/each or $75 for two!

My name is Chipper, and boy am I glad to be at CBHR! I was turned in to a shelter out in the mountains by my owner who could no longer care for me. I am two years old, so there’s still a lot of mileage left on this happy hound! I’m young and ready for adventure, but I know what good Carolina Basset Hound Rescue manners are too. I like to ride in the car, and I don’t mind being in a crate. I’m housetrained, and just love being around people. If you’re looking for a sweet, young (and very handsome) basset hound, I’m looking for a loving family for my very own, so let’s make a deal! She is very smart so she could easily be taught new tricks, etc., but already knows the basics of house and crate-training and your essential home manners. Luke. One-year old Luke lost his fa-tha, Darth Vader- but he would be happy with any fatha that loves him! Luke is adjusting well to a life in BTRNC Foster Care- far, far away from the galaxy he came from. Luke Boston Terrier Rescue of NC is working on his house manners and is almost 100% trained. He loves to sit in your lap and sleep or just be petted. Luke walks well on a leash but is happiest when playing ball. He gets along with dogs and children and ignores cats! Luke has never met a stranger. This sweet boy loves to give kisses and snuggle. He recognizes the words “hungry/eat”, “treat/cookie” and “go outside”. He is one low maintenance dog, happy to just be beside his people! He is calm and has a great disposition. Call 339-4368 if you can offer Luke a loving home. n
Sylvia is a 4 year old, bat-eared girl whom is very good with dogs, even small ones, like the Chihuahua she lives with. Sylvia loves kids, and is relatively low energy for a terrier, Carolina Care Bullies preferring to lounge “froggy-style”, rather than enjoy a long walk. Sylvia would make a great dog for a family, and is definite Canine Good Citizen material. In fact, if she doesn’t get adopted first, her foster mama is taking her through obedience training and is hoping to achieve just that! She is a recent graduate of Family Dog 2 at Paws4Ever. For more information, email Amanda at amanda@carebullies.org.

Dixie is a 3 year
5 year old siblings who come from a home where their beloved human had to move Doberman Rescue of the Triad into assisted living. They’re well-behaved and well-mannered and are closely bonded with one another, so it’s our goal for them to be adopted together. They are good with other dogs and older children. Bowe is a laid-back couch potato with an easy-going personality. Spiffy, the leader of the two, takes charge of her brother but has no question that humans are the top authority and as a result she is very obedient. Both are fully vetted.
old female who is very friendly and loving and active. She is very submissive at first, but warms up quickly when she realizes she is going to get attention. She arrived quite a bit Triad Golden Retriever Rescue underweight and we’re working on putting some pounds on her. She is friendly with other dogs and good with children. She will need training, especially on how to walk on a leash, but loves treats so should be readily trainable. She would probably do best in a home with another dog to help burn off her high energy.

Six, Tyson & Charisma are the last three pups of November’s girl, Jada. Jada’s litter of nine pups was born in an NC Shelter. Pneumonia took five of the pups in the shelter and the surviving four were placed in foster homes. One has since been adopted, and these three are waiting patiently for their furever homes. All three are house and crate trained, good with dogs, German Shepherd Rescue & Adoptions cats and older kids. With great temperaments and a never-ending desire to play and be loved, these three would make wonderful companions for the right families. Visit www.gsdrescue.org for more information. n

Pebbles.
Hi there! I’m Pebbles! My first family couldn’t continue to take care of me, so I am looking for a new family to call my own. I am super sweet – not snippy at all. I love to love!! I only have 3 legs. I just had my 4th one amputated – it broke in 2 places and couldn’t be saved. But it’s really not a big deal. I get around very well. (However, I would prefer a home Friends of Penny without a lot of stairs! A one-story Min Pin Rescue home with only a step or two down to the yard would be my dream.) I am cute as a button and would love to be the newest member of your family!! For more information on me, please contact my foster mom at: sandydogcharmer@yahoo.com. I hope to see you soon! n December 2011 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails 36

Bernie. Meet Bernie!
Bernie has had a hard life and lived on his own for most of it. LRNC found Bernie standing in the middle of an intersection in front of a school bus. Bernie had no fur on his body and was severely emaciated. Lucky for Bernie, the President of LRNC took a late lunch that day! Bernie has settled into living NC Lab Rescue in a house, but still has some work to do. He’s working on being on a leash and learning how to meet other dogs. (NCSR # 349) is an 8-½ yr old, 17 lb. salt and pepper female. She was an owner turn-in. Gracie is a beautiful solid gray female, spayed domestic short hair. Only 3-4 years old, Gracie was rescued from a grocery store parking lot. Gracie was a bit timid at first, but has “come out” and is very sweet and likes to be rubbed. She was previously someone’s cat as she was already spayed when picked up. She’ll definitely be a lap cat once she gets to know you and your home. Gracie gets along well with other cats and is up-to-date on her shots.

year and a half old, fully vetted, house trained and the most loving little man around. Rocky has had heart worm treatment as he was a slight positive and needs to remain on HeartMiracles at Work Rescue gard. He was left outside tied to a chain his entire life and we think he has been abused as he occasionally will flinch if you reach for him to fast. Poor baby! He is a wonderful dog who gets along with all dogs and cats and sleeps curled up under the blankets with You and when you move he moves closer as he needs to feel you touching him to sleep!
Amodeus. His beard is cream colored rather than white, and his belly doesn’t jiggle, but this jolly young fellow is ready for a warm and cozy home for Christmas. Amodeus is a gorgeous long haired buff colored stumpy Manx born about March 2008. He’s a big teddy bear, very Tailless Cat Rescue easy going, affectionate, and sweet. He’s great with children, they can pick him up and carry him around and he will just hang from their arms. He also likes to be brushed. He’s well mannered in the house, using his litterbox perfectly, gets along great with other cats and does fine with dogs as well. He is is vaccinated, wormed, neutered, microchipped, FeLV/FIV and heartworm negative.

Training Your Pet
A Sport for Every Dog By Jan Wilson
I
t is a fact that dogs with physical and mental stimulation are happier and more well behaved than dogs with little activity and obedience training. Obedience is one activity that can fulfill some of those needs. Dog sports, on the other hand, take obedience training to the next level. Sports can take the skills learned in basic obedience and apply them to learning an activity or job. Some common sports are Ralley, Flyball, Trieball, Free style
dancing, and Dock Diving. At Dog-Gone Fun we offer courses in Agility and K9 Nosework®. Each of these sports challenge the owner both mentally and physically in different ways. Not to mention, dog sports are a great way for dog oriented people to meet new friends with similar interests. Canine Agility has become a popular sport in recent years. The handler directs the dog over a variety of equipment and jumps that make up the course. The dog must learn to run through tunnels, and climb and jump over obstacles . The sequence of the course changes with every practice session and every competition. The challenge of the sport is that dogs can read even the most subtle cues from their owners. Therefore, clear communication between dog and handler is essential to maneuver the course in the correct order. It also builds stamina, coordination and confidence. The dog must be in good physical condition to excel. Dogs of all sizes and breeds can perform on the agility course. Competitors range from 4 pound Chihuahuas to Great Danes, and it is not necessary for your dog to be a purebred to participate in competition. Organization such as USDAA and CPE accept dogs of all breeds and mix breeds in their competitions. Trials are readily available in every state. If competition is not your style, there are still many benefits in learning Agility. Many students who come to Dog-Gone Fun never plan to compete. They enjoy spending quality time with their dogs, practicing communication and perfecting off-leash skills. K9 Nose Work® is another sport that is gaining popularity. This activity utilizes the dog’s natural scenting ability and hunting skills. Modeled after scent detection training
in working dogs, Nose Work teaches your dog to locate a specific scent in an environment through fun and games. Different levels of competition include building searches, outdoor searches as well as vehicle searches. K9 Nose Work® is a lower impact sport that burns off mental and physical energy where each dog is taught individually without the pressure of other dogs present. This makes the sport ideal for dogs that are shy, have issues with other dogs or other environmental pressures. Dogs must learn to be crated or otherwise secured away from the training area when they are not actively involved. Since Nose Work is low impact, it is ideal for older dogs or dogs with disabilities. Once again, if competing is not your style, K9 Nose Work® still has incredible benefits for both dog and owner. Owners learn how their dog perceives the environment. They learn to trust their dog’s judgment and work together as a team. At competition level, the handler does not know where the odor is located. Only his canine partner can tell him! When deciding what sport to try with your dog, it is important to keep in mind that it is a sport. It should be fun for both you and your dog. Pressure should be kept at a minimum. Spending time with friends and your dog should be the ultimate goal. Have Fun!

The Artistry of Richard Hedgecock
My name is Richard. I live on a small farm with my wife, Penny, sixty dogs, thirteen cats and five horses. That equates to ten tons of dog food, five hundred pounds of cat food and five hundred bales of hay per year. My wife rescues animals you see. I would never have chosen this way of life for myself, but I appreciate the love and devotion my wife shows to these creatures. And even more, I appreciate the serendipity they have brought to my life, in that seventy-six animals provide countless opportunities for artistic inspiration. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that, for the sake of honesty in my art, I should paint from what I have lived. Animals are what I know, and so they have become the focal point in most of my paintings. There are plenty of wildlife artists out there; but my
experience with animals has been of those tamed by humans, and once tamed, dependant on them. I call it “Midlife.” There is a beauty that radiates from a painting when it strikes an element of truth, that beauty is what I am after. I believe I’m a storyteller at heart, and the story behind a painting is more important to me than any technical quality like texture, temperature or balance. To me, those things are simply the vocabulary from which I build my narratives. I have recently published a book expressing my observations and illustrated by my paintings.
You can learn more about Richard’s book by going online at www. RichardHedgecock.com, email - richardh@bellsouth.net or by phone 336.996.5211 office, 336.682.3269 cell.
Success Stories - Please send us your stories of successful adoptions
Princess Pepper’s Happy Ending
by Nicholas Lamphier
“The dog picks you”, would be our main basis for adopting the perfect dog that we were seeking. We also had some other specific requirements. Since my mom is allergic to most dogs, it would have to be a low shedding, mostly hypoallergenic dog. My mother also wanted it to be small, probably a lap dog. When we arrived at the Loving Pet Inn Adoption center that day, the first dog we saw definitely didn’t pick us. She started trembling with fear and growling as soon as she was put in the room with us. My family knew she was not meant to be our dog, so she went out. We saw two other cute puppies that were just not right either. So with sunken hearts, we left the adoption center. About a week later, Pepper came into the story. Dara Lamberson, the co-owner of Loving Pet Inn, called my mom about three West Highland White Terriers that had just come to the adoption center. They had previously belonged to an elderly couple. One of them passed away and the other went into a nursing home, so the executor of the couple’s estate turned the dogs over to the shelter. When the Westies first arrived at Loving Pet Inn, they were not in good shape. They had fleas, they had previously had a lot of mats in their hair, which were cut away, probably by the executor of the estate, and had left them looking, well… not very pretty. When we went to the adoption center, we were led to an outdoor pen and the three Westies were brought in. Two of the dogs were going around, exploring their surroundings, not very interested in us. But the third one was different. She went right over and laid her head down on my mother’s lap, then slowly went around and got to know each one of us. She was actually the first dog ever to actually lick my face! Everyone, including our dog, agreed that she would be a perfect addition to our family, so it became official. Mrs. Lamberson put it in our sweetie’s file that we had claimed her, and eight days later, she was delivered to her forever home with us. We’re happy to learn that one of her sisters had been adopted by someone in Raleigh, and her other sister had actually been delivered just before her. After careful consideration, we decided the name Pepper would fit our new dog perfectly. Among other name choices were Reesie, Maggie, Macy, and Violet. At least one person in our family didn’t like each

“Remember guys, you don’t pick the dog, the dog picks you,” our mom reminded my two brothers and I as we drove to the Loving Pet Inn Adoptions in High Point.
of those names. So we chose Pepper, the name everyone liked. From the start, we knew she was the right dog for us, but she has already done things since we got her to further convince us. For example, when I went to the basement to turn off the radio my brother had left on, she tried to follow me. When I said, “No Pepper,” she walked away and whimpered loudly. When I came back up, she was right there waiting for me! Pepper is also truly the sweetest creature I have ever met. You can not sit down on the floor without her snuggling up in your lap and giving you a loving kiss on the cheek. And when you sit down on furniture, she jumps up with you and does the same thing. Her life with us is truly that of a fairy tale, and we know that she has met her happy ending with us. So as you can see, when you’re adopting a pet, it’s very important for the pet to like you, too. If you adopt an animal that doesn’t truly pick you, neither of you will be happy at all. You want it to like you, but it just isn’t very interested in you because you’re not the perfect person to love and take care of it. If you’re searching for a pet, I strongly encourage you to look around at all the available pets that meet your criteria, and if none of them are right for you, then ask all the shelters and adoption centers you look at to call you if they get any other animals that could be your future best friend. Triad Happy Tails Magazine is a great resource to look for potential pets, as is Petfinder.com. If any of you who are reading this are currently searching for a pet to call your own, I wish you good luck and I hope that when the time comes, you will know without any doubt that you choose each other, and that you and your new pet will both live happily ever after. Nicholas is 11 years old and attends Vienna Elementary, in Pfafftown. He’s involved in the school play, and also writes and publishes a weekly newspaper for his class. He’s very interested in dogs and animal rescue, and he loves to read Triad Happy Tails Magazine every month. He likes animals so much that he’s considering becoming a veterinarian. Other career choices are a teacher, an author, or a journalist. Nicholas has three brothers, and loving, supportive parents and teachers.
Beautifully illustrated by local artist,
Richard Hedgecock, the perfect gift for the pet lover on your list. Read about the heartwarming rescue experiences, brought to life with amazing paintings. A gift that will be cherished and enjoyed over and over again. Richard’s paintings capture the essence of the love humans feel for their animal friends. Richard’s book, After Five,What’s Another Dog has been featured on “Roy’s Folks”.

The Riot Act...Back in Action Recently, Drs. Christine Hunt and Catherine Markijohn completed their first on-site adult adipose derived stem cell treatment. Riot, Dr. Markijohn’s eight-year old Corgi,
has had chronic pain and progressive arthritis since he was six months old. After diligently managing his pain with chiropractic adjustments, several anti-inflammatory medications, acupuncture,
shock wave therapy and analgesics, we chose Riot as our first patient to receive stem cell therapy. Riot’s list of ailments includes hip dysplasia, partial tear of his right knee ligament, severe tendinitis of both shoulders and biceps, and inter-vertebral disc disease of his lower back. Stem cells are our bodies’ natural healing cells and are concentrated in fat or adipose tissue awaiting activation. They migrate to injured tissues, where they transform and replace the damaged cells. Using cutting edge technology, we can now harvest fat tissue, concentrate the stem cells from the fat, activate the stem cells and inject them directly into the affected joints, muscles and tendons. Within two to four weeks,
most animals are able to walk, run and jump again—and many have either discontinued or dramatically reduced pain medication. Please visit our web site as we track Riot’s remarkable journey as he returns to his old riotous self. Just six days after his treatment, Riot performed his famous “frisky dog dance,” racing around our hospital and showing off his newfound pain-free health.
