Meet our newest foster cat, Bryce, from the SPCA of the Triad! Bryce is so friendly! He was found as a lonely stray behind someone’s house in Gibsonville. He is a 2-year old, orange and white Tabby. Bryce is very sweet-natured, and gentle with humans and other kitties. When he’s not busy being stretched out in front of a sunny window, he loves to follow you around and see what you’re up to. I love my laser treatments
Herford has degenerative intervertebral disc disease (his back hurts). Whenever he sees our Erchonia cold laser unit, he jumps up on the treatment table so he is first in line. Erchonia cold laser therapy combines different light frequencies that stimulate cellular energy production. Increased cellular energy accelerates wound healing, decreases inflammation and decreases the pain associated with these medical conditions. The FDA approved Erchonia laser used in human medicine is now available for your pet. The Erchonia laser now has over 15 FDA approved applications.

It’s been a great five and a half years publishing our magazine. We see more attention given to the importance to spay/neuter, implementation of anti-tethering legislation, new programs created in our schools and communities to inform and educate children concerning responsible pet ownership and a common goal of making this a better place for our animal friends. Let’s all strive for more progress, more giving and more caring in the future.

ARTHRITIS IN VETERINARY MEDICINE:
Does your pet seem to be slowing down? What Is Arthritis? Osteoarthritis, more commonly referred to as “Arthritis”, is estimated to be present in one out of five adult dogs. Arthritis can occur in any joint but it most commonly affects the hip, elbow, shoulder, knee/ stifle, wrist/carpus, ankle/hock, or the intervertebral joints that make up the spine. This happens when the cartilage that makes up a joint deteriorates from either trauma/injury, congenital abnormality or more commonly through wear and tear during the aging process. In a healthy joint, the cartilage acts as a shock absorber as force is exerted between bones and the joint. With deterioration, there is a decrease in shock absorption causing our pets to suffer from inflammation and joint pain.
a change in lifestyle, joint supplements, and anti-inflammatory medications. A very important and often forgotten feature of this therapy is maintaining an ideal weight for your pet. A pet that has arthritis and is overweight experiences an excess amount of force through their damaged joint. This alone can generate a significant amount of pain and start an inflammatory process in the body. At an ideal weight, pain can be significantly decreased and life expectancy can be increased. A great diet for a pet with arthritis is one that consists of high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. This ingredient decreases inflammation and slows the breakdown of cartilage. Daily exercise that consists of low-impact movements such as swimming is extremely beneficial in alleviating pain due to arthritis. Additional therapies for arthritis include daily supplements such as glucosamine chondroitin, and fatty acids, as well as, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID). Often with a good diet, supplementation and maintaining an ideal weight, the use of antiinflammatories may not be indicated. However, in many cases these medications are needed to decrease the clinical signs of arthritis. When NSAIDS are indicated it is also very important to ensure the liver and the kidneys can properly metabolize this medication. This is accomplished by checking your pet’s blood work every six months. An important reminder is that human NSAIDS are not a substitute for treating your pet’s arthritis as this can cause renal failure.
Alternative Therapies That Aid in Alleviating Pain There are several alternative therapies that can be added to your pet’s arthritis treatment regimen. These include acupuncture and cold laser therapy. Acupuncture is a specific therapy that should be completed by a licensed veterinary acupuncturist that understands the pathophysiology of your pet’s disease as well as their anatomy. Cold laser therapy is a modern and effective approach in alleviating arthritis pain. Cold laser therapy decreases inflammation and promotes tissue healing. These alternative therapies are not sufficient by themselves and should always be used in conjunction with a standard treatment plan.
Let’s Not Forget About Our Feline Friends
There are a number of symptoms that are attributed to arthritis that may be misinterpreted as signs of simple aging in our pets. Changes in your adult pet’s behavior due to arthritis could be indicated by stiffness that is most commonly present in the morning, difficulty getting up from a restful position, difficulty going up or down stairs, acting more withdrawn from the family, obsessively licking at a single joint, or vocalizing when you touch a sore area.
Cats are very good about hiding their ailments, especially when they are suffering from arthritis. Your cat may have arthritis if he is no longer willing to jump up onto items, or when jumping down, he is not willing to jump directly onto the floor. If your cat suffers from arthritis, you may want to evaluate your cat’s litter box. A litter box that contains elevated sides may make it difficult for your cat to enter and exit the box thus causing them to urinate or defecate outside of their litter box. Unfortunately, there are no FDA approved medications for chronic pain in cats as there are for dogs, but there are other options that can be discussed with your veterinarian. Furthermore, the same principles of prevention and maintenance apply to cats with respect to maintaining an ideal body weight, and changing their diet to include essential fatty acids and glucosamine chondroitin to decrease pain associated with the presence of arthritis.
What Can You Do to Help Alleviate Your Pet’s Arthritis?
Slowing Down and Your Pet’s Quality of Life
Unfortunately, once the process of cartilage deterioration occurs in a joint there is very little that can be done to repair the damaged tissue. However, there are a number of things that can be done to alleviate the pain and inflammation that is associated with osteoarthritis. Ultimately, the most effective treatment includes a combination therapy involving
Ultimately, arthritis is a very common disease that occurs in a large percentage of our senior pets to some degree. It is important to be mindful of our pet’s aging process and their overall quality of life. If you find your pet slowing down, please consult a veterinarian to discuss if arthritis may be present.

We believe the last weeks, days, and moments that an owner has with a pet are the most cherished times, and should be handled with dignity and love. By providing veterinary hospice and pet euthanasia services in the home, the human-animal bond is less disturbed, making a much more peaceful closing to a shared bond.

Maya is 2 years old, declawed by previous owner (we do not endorse declawing), spayed, upto-date on vaccines and combo tested negative. She is a very sweet girl who would do best as the only kitty in her forever home. With proper introduction to dogs, she should do well. She loves to play and especially loves feather toys. The Fort Rescue
scheduled to be euthanized when one of our volunteers pulled him from a local shelter. He is about 2 years-old and a stocky 40lbs. Gage is a blast to play fetch with - he LOVES it. He is a very athletic dog that needs physical expenditure every day, but once he gets that, loves to snuggle on the couch. He gets along well with other dogs that enjoy to play as much as he does. He has been neutered, microchipped, fully vaccinated and is current on heartworm/flea/tick preventative.

Mariah is a pretty tortie stubby Manx girl. The vet estimates she was born sometime in 2013, maybe around October. Mariah isn’t fond of being picked up and held, but will climb into your lap for a snuggle on her own as soon as you sit down, she also likes to sleep snuggled against her foster mom at night. She loves to be petted and rubbed until she’s had enough, then she has had enough. :-) Mariah Tailless Cat Rescue is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped and is FeLV/FIV negative. Money really can buy love and I am here to prove it! I am Susie, a Boxer/German Shepherd Mix, approximately 2 years old. I love people and aim to please, but not so much small dogs or cats. I’m already house-trained and crate-trained. I have a very expressive face and I promise I will have you at my first Woof! Minnie.
If you’re looking for a spunky gal to call your own, Minnie is the dog for you! She is about 2 years old and is a pocket Pit Bull Terrier. Minnie is very sweet, very smart and loves long walks, balls, romping with her doggie foster brother, and snuggles. She takes direction well and wants nothing more than to please her people. She crates beautifully, not even a whimper. She is very gentle taking treats, loves to chew on bones, and gives kisses. Minnie prefers calmer, larger dogs. Minnie is currently in foster care where she receives lots of love and attention. She is house-trained, spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped!

Cassiopeia.
sweetest, most devoted family dog and wants to be with her people all the time. After her owner passed away, this sweet girl found herself at the shelter. We have completely worked past her resource guarding. Her foster mom can reach in her crate and grab her bowl, touch her all over while she’s eating, give and take away chewies all without the slightest grumble...she just wags her little nub. Cocoa is up-to-date on shots and spayed. She is ready for her furever home now!
Is this not one of the most unique and different kittens you have ever seen? Cassiopeia is beautiful both inside and out. This 5 month old domestic short hair cat is really sweet and loves to play with toys. Cassiopeia is littertrained and a total love bug. All of her siblings from her litter have been adopted. Now she’s ready for her furever home!

Joss is a short and stocky girl (60 pounds and strong!), estimated to be around 3-5 years of age. She enjoys cuddling, walks and belly rubs galore! When she’s really happy, she lets you know by making the cutest snorts you’ve ever heard! She does well with medium sized dogs or larger, but finds smaller animals (toy breeds, cats, birds, etc.) to be a little too much for her and would do best in a home without such distractions. She is crate and house-trained.

Socks was found as a stray, heartworm positive, emaciated and homeless. A kind veterinarian and her family took him in, helped him get well, and kept him until a foster or forever home could be found for him. Socks is about 5 years old and is now happily settled in with his foster family which includes fur siblings and a child. He is very smart, and loves to go places and meet people! He walks decently on Merit Pit Bull a leash, and we are working on making him an expert. Socks loves people, and wants to hang out with you all the time. He is now healthier than ever and can’t wait to get belly rubs from his furever family. Meet Maybelle.
Hey, there! Got a lap you can spare? I’m a lap cat in training. If it was possible, I’d spend all day in somebody’s lap. But, I do have other duties. I have to play with my foster siblings and run around the room to work out the kitten crazies. When it’s all said and done, though, I’m more than happy to just curl up and purr while being petted. I was born in early October 2015 and am current on my shots for my age.
As soon as you sit down with Maybelle she instantly starts purring extremely loud. Maybelle IS definitely one of the most photogenic kittens we have, she seems to pose perfectly for pictures. Maybelle loves to play with brother Dimitri. Born in April of this year, Maybelle is ready for her forever home!

Monet.
Hooch.
Are you ready to play? Monet is! You might not be able to tell it just from looking, but I’m a world class toy catcher. Top ranked in both catching toys thrown over my head and the game of fetch, I’m getting ready to go pro! And that doesn’t even begin to cover my skills in tail-chasing. That’s a tough one, I tell you. But, if you want to be great, you have to work at it. And I work so hard that when the training day’s over, I fall asleep in the nearest lap. Those post workout massages get me every time. I’ve been training since April 2015. I don’t use performance enhancing substances, but I am neutered and current on all my vaccines.
This baby boy is our Hooch! He is one of 7 precious babies that were rescued from a North Carolina shelter. Watching Hooch and his siblings run through the grass frolicking is about as special as it gets, especially knowing they were living in a concrete jail on death row. Come by and meet Hooch and the gang!

Emma.
I’m 6 years old and 13 pounds of pure love and devotion I’m smart, loyal and sweet to my people. My favorite things in life are the person I take care of, the yard I run, play and protect, and food, glorious food, treats and more treats. I am very food motivated. I need a quiet environment, not too much company, I prefer women to men and I am NOT good with children. I take my time getting to know people, and I really don’t like very many people. I can be too protective so must be kept on halter leash when company comes or in my crate. I am WELL house-trained and crate-trained, and sit and come when called. When not outside making sure the world is safe and squirrel free, I love to nap on the couch, snuggle and be petted. I play well with my 2 foster dog siblings and am OK with cats. This horse is not your typical 3 year old. He used to be lazy and it was challenging to get him to move to learn to walk/trot and canter under saddle but once he understood what his trainer was asking he responded perfectly. Geronimo does not have a mean bone in his body, just tons of fun and entertainment. We think with a bit of training he can do anything from jumping, to barrel racing, trail riding, anything. He loves attention and is willing to try anything I ask of him!
who came to us when his owners could no longer afford his care. He had to have an eye removed due to a mass but has now healed and looks great. Horses generally do just fine after losing one eye. Sulli is doing well under saddle at a walk. He is wearing only a halter and lead rope and would probably be happiest as a trail horse. He loves to be groomed. We think he’d be great for someone that wants a pet or a horse to give pony rides on. Our trainer thinks that Sulli would be happiest with an adopter who enjoys natural horsemanship, as he seems to respond well to that type of training.

around 1 year old. He is up-to-date on vaccines, neutered and microchipped. His coat is coarse and shiny black except for a few white hairs on his chest. His face is full of personality with perky, pointed ears that will make you chuckle. His look and his size make him seem a bit like a caricature and he often has such an intent look on his face, you find yourself wondering, “What is Ryder thinking?” Ryder is quiet and strong and would do best with someone who likes outdoor activities. neighborhood, hungry and desperate for food. He is a 1 year old Chihuahua/Min Pin mix who is upto-date on vaccines, neutered and microchipped. Kelly is a happy little guy who is eager to please and gets along well with other dogs and loves people. He would fit in about any home but especially one where someone is home a lot. Kelly is very smart and should pick up training quickly. He enjoys walks and likes to play. His favorite thing is to spend time with his human(s). He would like a calm, relaxing place to call his own, along with a human who will give him a chance to stretch his legs and then snuggle with him. Most importantly, Kelly is looking for someone to love who will love him back with the same intensity. He’s a a true gem and a good companion dog.

is a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix around 2 years old. He is up-to-date on vaccines, neutered and microchipped. Martin is one big personality in one little body. With one ear up and one ear down, along with his “who me?” look, Martin will melt any heart. He is shy and backs away if he doesn’t know you, or is unsure, but a little patience and love quickly turns this shy guy into a love muffin. He has a sweet face, a great personality and is the best at cuddles. When he is comfortable and confident he may come on strong with a warning growl or big bark to warn anyone that he is no pushover and tell you it’s his turf - but it’s all for show! A soft voice and some patience soon has Martin in your lap and a treat will make him your best friend. Martin is smart, loyal, protective and loves companionship.

Like all kittens, Jim is cute but he must have some sort of magical attraction potion because one look and you will be so smitten with this kitten you will have to take him home! This 9 year old tabby has a beautiful coat with striking markings and a beautiful personality to match. Baby also came to us declawed. She has been spayed, is up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. She is sweet and calm and all she wants is a human and a home to call her own. She would fit best in a calm and relaxed home where she can hang out and get adjusted to being your new best friend.

Ollie is an adorable, sweet 10 year young healthy male. He gets along well with other dogs, but he is used to eating solo and not used to sharing his food or treats. He is best with older children that know to leave him alone or no kids in the home. Ollie is a great Pug and would do best in a low key to moderate home where he can get lots of attention. He loves butt scratches and is a couch potato Pug. He is afraid to be picked up, we do not think he was ever picked up. Healthy, Ollie is up-to-date on routine shots, neutered, heartworm negative Pug Rescue of NC and microchipped. All Pugs must be indoor dogs, as they require air conditioning in the summer months. If you do not plan on keeping them as inside pets, then a Pug is not the dog for you. Please, before you consider adopting a Pug read about their needs. Adoption Fee $100. Fostered near Roanoke VA. Training Your Pet
Puppies, Puppies, Puppies! By: Carolina Air Canine LLC
Y
ou know ‘em you love ‘em! Puppy days can be fun or frustrating. It all starts with the basics and addressing your dog’s need for speed! OK, maybe not speed, but an outlet for energy is required for a well-balanced, good mannered puppy. When working with puppies, always end commands with praise. All corrections end with praise and redirection to an acceptable behavior. Tell your dog “good job”, build them up for completing a command or properly redirecting to another acceptable behavior. Harsh correcting is a common mistake among puppy owners and can be counter productive. Understanding how dogs learn and reaching them on their level is what turns an average pup into a super pup! This may sound good in theory, but a good trainer will help you put theory into practical application. When you are raising a puppy, it is important to never use your dog’s name negatively in a corrective tone. This is another common human mistake. For example, if your pup puts his nose in the toilet, and you yell “Fido”. He then goes for the trashcan and again you yell “Fido”. You are conditioning your dog to become introverted when he hears his name in a corrective tone. This is the opposite of what you want, which is to come happily when called. With puppies, you need to establish pack order, so no “Free Love” (that went out in the 60’s)! Make your pup earn affection. Remember pack order and try not to praise your dog excessively for no reason. A short sit-stay or down-stay followed by praise will keep you in control and in the alpha position. Know your tones: Command, Correction, and Praise. Dogs do not carry the cognitive function of humans, as they are non-verbal communicators. Therefore your tones must be consistent and distinct. Remember your puppy has a short attention span. Don’t try to work them for long periods. Make your dog’s training part of your normal interaction, with three minutes here, five minutes there through out the day. Make your dog sit and stay at thresholds, then 40

release once you’ve crossed and never let the pup walk ahead of you. A sit and wait at mealtime are great control exercises for a growing pup. Exercising puppies is critical. Retrieve, retrieve, retrieve is the best thing you can do with your puppy. The drop and fetch command are the key to releasing your puppy’s energy. Never play tug of war with a puppy! This conditions a dog to compete with you and not be obedient. Learn to play retrieve with your dog safely. Veterinarians see multiple injuries from retrieval games gone wrong! Learn to throw discs, balls and toys in a manner that is safe for your dog. If you think playing retrieve with your dog is work, wait until you have to rehab a puppy from a sprain or a break. There you have it—a few insights to the puppy experience. Have fun, be safe and enjoy your puppy days ‘cause in a blink of an eye they are grown and the puppy days are gone. Think of a puppy as a blank computer, what type of programing you put into your relationship will determine what type of adult dog you’ll have in the future. Roxie is a very smart, athletic Jack Russell mix. We don’t know much about her background and she takes a little bit to warm up to some people, but once she does, she loves to snuggle on the couch or under the covers at bedtime. She can jump a baby gate with no problem and loves to race around my fenced in back yard with my deaf Chihuahua Rescue Boxer. The two of them can play for hours on end. A fenced in yard is a definite must for Roxie. She is spayed, up-to-date on shots and on heartworm preventative.

Alaska was found hanging around a known “dog dumping” area in Lexington. We don’t know anything about her background, but we do know that she is super smart and LOVES to play. She is currently living with a trainer and is house-trained, crate-trained, and already knows a bunch of commands. Alaska does well with male dogs, kids, and even cats! This girl is looking for a family who could continue with her training and understand sometimes a girl just needs to be a girl. German Shepherd Rescue & Adoptions

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY. by Janine Allen Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them. As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one. I rescued a human today.

Meet Blue! At 11 years old, he can be considered a senior, but we consider him a gentleman! Blue was surrendered to us when his owners were placed in hospice. He had a softball sized tumor that we removed and he’s recovered beautifully. Blue’s foster mom says he is loving and playful, and still has energy for an old boy! Blue likes to be outdoors to sniff, play, and walk, but loves a cuddly bed or human to snuggle with indoors.

I can’t make Charlee be more interactive with new people. I can only continue to show him love and affection, and let him make his own choices. Building a bond between a dog and human takes time. Once Charlee drops his guard, he is the most loving dog. When he chooses to snuggle, or comes up to you and rests his head on your knee, it is absolutely heart warming.
Charlee’s Journey
From Shelter Dog to a Chance for True Happiness - Part 2
M
ost dogs that I train are already attached to people and living in (or actually running) a household. Charlee (probably) has never lived in a house. The whole idea of comfort, warmth, and companionship are foreign to him. The past couple of months, I have done the typical dog training things with Charlee like crate training, potty training, leash work, sit, stay, and place. However, the majority of our work has been showing Charlee how to trust and be confident. Charlee’s confidence was very low around other dogs. Whenever he was around other dogs, he was very anxious. He learned that being around other dogs is stressful and that being anti-social would keep him from having to interact. This behavior was amplified whenever toys, or a food/water bowl was in the mix. One-by-one, I introduced him to well socialized dogs in an open environment. This allowed him to be around other dogs, but gave him enough space to retreat when he felt overwhelmed. Over weeks of play sessions, Charlee learned to calm down and started to initiate contact with other dogs. He had a huge success one day, when he allowed another dog to approach a water bowl and share a drink of water with him. Eventually, I challenged him by taking him to the Dog Park. Typically, I avoid dog parks for a few reasons, but it was perfect to test Charlee’s progress. I slowly integrated him into the pack at the dog park, and he had a great time.
Please Adopt Me!
by James Voyatzis
Charlee still has some trust issues with new people. Whenever new people are around, he is aloof and not very interactive. When people interested in adopting a dog meet him, they don’t connect with him since he does not give them a lot of attention at first. It is funny, people pick the spunky, hyperactive dog over the laid back, mellow dogs. Then they seek out training help for their “overly-hyper and crazy” dog. People say “Charlee looks sad”, or “he isn’t very loving”. They couldn’t be more wrong. Charlee needs a loving home with a family that understands his history and personality. If someone is willing to give him a chance, they won’t find a more loving, loyal, and appreciative dog.

Short of losing your dog due to death, discovering or believing your dog is missing is the worst thing that can happen to a dog owner. This article gives dog owners some tips on what to do if they believe their dog is missing.
My Dog Is Missing What Should I Do? FIRST & MOST IMPORTANT DON’T PANIC! Most dogs, if they are able, will come
home within eight hours or at their usual feeding time. So remain calm, don’t immediately go around the neighborhood screaming your dog’s name. A dog is like a little kid who has wandered out of its yard. Deep down it knows it has done something wrong. So when it sees or hears Mom/Dad yelling its name, it thinks it is in trouble.
R.V. Wakefield and Dodger, one of his trackers.
46
After all would you come if you thought Mom/Dad was mad and if you came to them you were going to be spanked? I am not suggesting you shouldn’t start looking for your dog. But just before you go, check inside the house or immediately around it, especially if it is a small dog. Many times we have found a “Missing Dog” in a closed closet, under a bed, in a basement, in a crawl space or in an out building. After you have searched all of those possibilities, do it again. OK, you have searched both inside, outside and around the house, now its time to search the neighborhood or woods around your house. As I mentioned earlier, don’t start running around screaming your dog’s name. This will only scare your dog and make it reluctant to come. Simply walk slowly, constantly searching. If you see him, stop, sit or kneel down and gently call its name. If your dog doesn’t come immediately don’t get discouraged, keep calling gently. Don’t try to chase it. Even a small dog can outrun you. All you will accomplish is frightening your dog, making it more difficult to catch. This may seem contrary to what you believe, but if you start screaming and chasing your dog you will only make yourself hoarse and scare your dog. If your dog does run from you, just watch
January 2016 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
to see which way it went and follow it. When you see it again, simply stop, sit or kneel down and gently call its name. Hopefully, you won’t have to repeat this many times, but be patient, eventually your dog should come to you. Many times people who have searched all day return home only to find their “Missing Dog” sitting on the front porch waiting for them.
IF YOUR INITIAL SEARCH IS NOT SUCCESSFUL DON’T BE DISCOURAGED All right, approximately 24 hours have
passed since you last saw your dog, now phase two in your search begins: • Call the Vets in your area, describe your dog and whether it is microchipped or tattooed. Rabies tags are very helpful. • Call the local Humane Society and Animal Shelter and give your dog’s information. If possible visit both and check to see if your dog is there. • Prepare a flyer and large sign describing you dog, include a picture and your contact number. (Unfortunately, if your dog has been outside for over 24 hours, it is not going to look like its picture.) • The sign should be big enough so that someone driving by can read it easily and should be placed at locations where there is heavy traffic. continue on next page
• Distribute copies of your flyer to your Mail Carrier, UPS and FED EX drivers, garbage collectors, school bus drivers, and anyone who travels around your area. Don’t forget Law Enforcement and Highway maintenance Personnel. NOW COMES THE HARDEST PART OF YOUR SEARCH Waiting for someone to call is nerve wracking. You will be
getting phone calls stating that your dog was seen at a location. Maybe it is your dog, maybe not. Remember, a lot of people don’t know the difference between a Beagle and a Foxhound, but you have to check it out anyway. When you do go someplace where your dog has reportedly been seen, plan on spending at least 45 minutes checking the area out. Don’t just give it a quick drive by look. Missing your dog and not knowing what has happened is beyond heartbreaking. Unfortunately, bad things sometimes happen to good people. If it is any consolation, I know of several instances where a dog has turned up months after it first went missing.

Rescue Angels flew quickly to her rescue and brought her swiftly to Elijah’s House where, after two serious baths (one just didn’t get it done) she is clean, sweet smelling, and Doberman Rescue of the Triad her beautiful black coat glistens. How she loved her first night inside, snuggled on a big comfy dog bed amongst fluffy blankets! And she’s just overjoyed at the opportunity to stretch out and run through the fields - likely her first opportunity ever to do so. Already she is wagging her tail and giving kisses. She’s ripe for a loving home and will quickly give her heart to the family that will love and care for and nurture her.

SAFE ON ALL BASES
“Dogs rescued from the streets or the pound often repay this second-chance kindness with years of gratitude to their saviors. Our home was no exception...”
by James Colasanti Jr.
D
ogs rescued from the streets or the pound often repay this second-chance kindness with years of gratitude to their saviors. Our home was no exception as one memorable nighttime occurrence on Muirs Chapel Road proved. Kindness begat not only kindness, but fierce loyalty as well. The canine situation in our household was different from most. We had a very large pack of dogs (two of which were threelegged) who shared our home with us. All had been rescued from one place or another, and no dog in need of a home had ever been turned away. Each dog was very special in its own canine way. And yet, we were not hoarders. All of our dogs received excellent medical care and through our efforts, we had had several dogs live to be 20 years old. Most people driving on Muirs Chapel Road had no idea that a house even existed at our locale. Our home sat 1500 feet down a long, narrow gravel driveway, overgrown on both sides with thick dense brush, shrubs, and very tall pine trees. Only a battered orange mailbox revealed our homestead’s hidden existence.

January 2016 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
We lived deep in the woods surrounded by a 6-foot tall wooden plank fence with a gated-door at the patio entrance. It was the closest thing to country living while still residing in the heart of the city. On that fateful summer night, streaks of light crackled through the war sky like sparklers flashing throughout a major 4th of July celebration. Some of the dogs, always uneasy during electrical storms, paced restlessly inside the house while others ignored the storm and slept peacefully on. Outside, the raccoons and possums maintained their nightly ritual of food—foraging and nocturnal mischief. Being so far away from the actual street, our power, phone, and cable lines traversed the lot through the trees until they attached to the wooden utility pole adjacent to the house. At 2 am, the pack started barking to be let out to answer nature’s call, or so I thought. Being a light sleeper I arose to open the side door to the backyard. To my dismay, the patio gate was ajar—a fixture we always made sure was latched to prevent the dogs from escaping into the surrounding woods.
Then, to my absolute horror, I looked up and saw two men dressed in black standing in the backyard—both had large handguns drawn and aimed at the dogs. All of the dogs surrounded the strange men. Even the little ones joined the big dogs in the foray, keeping the intruders at bay. The dogs’ pack instinct kicked in to protect me, our property, and their own territory from these strangers. Shouting at the men, my voice pierced the night with its urgency, “Who are you? What do you want? Please don’t hurt the dogs!” I could hear nothing because of the incessant loud barking. The taller man came towards me with his gun lowered to the ground. As he approached me, I gave a sigh of relief. It was then I saw his hat, his nightstick, and his badge which glistened, reflecting in the moonlight. I knew he was one of Greensboro’s finest. The young police officer asked, “Are you all right?” I replied, “Yes, why shouldn’t I be?” The officer explained that they had received a 911 call from our phone with static on the line. When they tried to return the call, it rang busy. Since their patrol car was in our neighborhood, they were dispatched to investigate. First, they didn’t even realize that a house existed at the end of this long gravel drive. Second, when they arrived, they saw my old red Jeep with the banged-up back end and they thought the worst. Also, in the beams of their flashlights, the thing that probably set the dogs to barking, they could see that our screen door had been torn up. (With dogs versus screen doors, dogs always win.) At that point the two young officers agreed that this looked like trouble. After the dogs had gone in and relative calm was restored, I spoke to both officers and thanked them for remaining calm during the stampede. We later learned that a raccoon had probably bitten through our phone line causing a short which triggered the 911 call. At the time it was a very scary situation----the darkness, the men, the guns, and the potential for a disastrous outcome. But the next day, we all laughed about it and we knew that the policemen had a good story to tell too. For us, it was just further proof that dogs do protect what they love. They were my guardians as much as I was theirs, and with the policemen watching over us, we were that much more secure. We were truly safe on all bases.
