Cover Story
Animal Rescue & Foster Program The Real Gain When Volunteering By Sharon Gray, Executive Director
Volunteering:
Offering oneself for a service, willingly and without pay. Little did the majority of our volunteers know they would receive so much when they started volunteering with the Animal Rescue & Foster Program (ARFP). They have gained friends for life with fellow animal lovers. Many of the people who become active volunteers with ARFP quickly gain a second family. Births, deaths, marriages, divorces, adoptions, surgeries, cancer diagnosis, and life experiences. . .all of these, and more, might be what you get, if you want it, when volunteering. ARFP volunteers, as a family, have experienced all of these things and more. Would we trade any of them? Most of them not. Our relationships have grown, and in turn, have helped ARFP to grow.
The amount of support you receive when you volunteer with ARFP is immeasurable. In 1999, many of our volunteers worked in Eastern North Carolina doing rescue work after Hurricane Floyd devastated that area. Some volunteers continued to help for over three months because the need was so big. In 2001, West Virginia saw the worst flooding in their history and ARFP volunteers came through once again, conducting food drives and driving pet food to the worst hit areas. In 2005, volunteers went to Louisiana not once, but twice, to help animals left homeless by Hurricane Katrina. Fifty-two animals were brought back to North Carolina in hopes of better lives. The bonds that were formed among these volunteers is unbreakable. Our volunteers have attended and been a part of other volunteers’ courtships and

weddings. We have cheered on volunteers adopting children from other countries as well as right here in the United States. We have also shared in the joy of our volunteers having their own children and grandchildren. We have thrown bridal showers and baby showers. Volunteers have supported each other through so many monumental moments in their lives. ARFP volunteers have been through colonoscopies, hysterectomies, cancer treatments, and many other surgeries with one another. They have experienced the joys of graduations, the passing of bar exams and acceptance into colleges. Together, they have mourned deaths and been there to support each other. Many a vacation has been spent at the beach with volunteers sharing books, stories, and good food. Our volunteers have traveled over 4000 miles round trip to volunteer with other animal organizations. This is dedication to helping animals, but it is also a group of friends doing what they feel is right. We’ve celebrated 21st birthdays and 50th birthdays. ARFP volunteers LOVE to eat so we have ice cream Sundays at our adoption center and pizza Saturdays. You can always count on fun times at the annual ARFP holiday party, where volunteers bring wrapped baked goods and appreciation gift bags are made for local veterinarians and businesses who help ARFP throughout the year. We’ve held pumpkin carvings and attended Easter Egg Hunts. Volunteers have attended baseball games, hockey games, and football games together. They eat dinner together and they go to wineries together.
ARFP volunteers participating in this year’s Human Race, sponsored by the Volunteer Center of Greensboro. Many of our volunteers started volunteering because their children had to do senior projects, boy scout projects or girl scout projects. Their children have long been out of high school and scouts and they are still volunteering. We love to see how our junior volunteers grow and become young
adults who come back and want to volunteer after college. In helping ARFP and homeless animals, ARFP volunteers have walked 18 Five K walks, slaved through 15 annual book sales, put together, and ran, 11 golf tournaments, attended hundreds of adoption events in
inclement weather, and have always stayed true to their beliefs and their belief in the mission of ARFP. We have many volunteers who have been with ARFP over 15 years and many just starting out and we hope they too will find a second family in ARFP. We have volunteers who work behind the scenes and others who work in the public eye. It takes volunteers who offer a variety of skills to make a team. ARFP values each and every one of them. This is life. This is the Animal Rescue & Foster Program. We are here for the animals. We rescue as many as our foster homes allow. We love the puppies and kittens and then shed tears when they are adopted. But we are here to support each other also. The Animal Rescue & Foster Program celebrates 20 years of rescuing puppies, kittens, dogs and cats this year. We also celebrate 20 years of volunteerism and the people who have made ARFP succeed. Would you like to know more about volunteer opportunities? Go to our website, www.arfpnc.com and complete a volunteer inquiry or call 336-323-0850.

Q A
Cats and Heartworms
Can cats get heartworms? Just like dogs, when a cat is bitten by a mosquito carrying infective heartworm larvae (the immature form), heartworm disease can develop. The larvae migrate through various body tissues and usually within 3-4 months end up staying in the blood vessels of the lungs. If male and female worms are present, they can produce offspring which circulate in the bloodstream and the cycle is started again when a mosquito bites and takes a blood meal. Unlike dogs, only a few heartworms usually develop in cats and offspring do not normally develop.
Q A
Is heartworm disease serious? Even though fewer heartworms may be found in cats, the disease can still be fatal. In comparison to dogs, cats tend to quickly develop life threatening respiratory disease such as asthma or allergic bronchitis symptoms. Common signs include lethargy, decreased appetite, rapid and difficult breathing, and even vomiting. These symptoms are the most severe when the heartworms first reach the lungs and also when the heartworms die which is usually 2-3 years later.
medications such as prednisolone. In severe cases oxygen, intravenous fluids, heart medications and antibiotics may be used as well. Once stabilized, cats can be given supportive treatment as needed until the heartworms die, which usually take 2-3 years.
Q A
Is feline heartworm disease preventable? Fortunately we have very effective preventative medications. There are several monthly heartworm preventatives available for oral or topical use from your veterinarian. Some of these products also control intestinal parasites and fleas which make them extremely convenient and popular. Make sure to talk to your veterinarian about placing all of your cats on a heartworm preventative so your cat will be spared this potentially fatal but preventable disease.

How common are heartworms in cats?
• Dentistry
Various studies have put the incidence of heartworm disease in cats at 2-14% in endemic areas which is similar or greater than the incidence of the feline leukemia virus. Heartworms are commonly found in our area. Cats as young as nine months and as old as seventeen years have been diagnosed with heartworms. Outside cats are certainly susceptible, but a large percentage of inside cats also have been found to have heartworms. Who hasn’t seen a mosquito in their house?
• Skin Disease/Allergies
Q A
How are heartworms diagnosed? There is a simple blood test for dogs which is very accurate for determining if they have heartworms. Since cats tend to have less heartworms, the blood test is not as accurate. For cats, several tests are used to diagnose heartworms. Blood tests such as antibody and antigen tests are frequently used along with chest x-rays. Echocardiography, an ultrasound of the heart, can be very helpful, particularly if the heartworms are visible in the blood vessels of the lungs.
Q A
How are heartworms treated? We have safe and effective treatments for heartworm disease in dogs but not for cats. The medications used to treat heartworms in dogs are not tolerated in cats and are not used. Cats with heartworm disease are treated symptomatically. This involves using anti-inflammatory type of

Juda loves to play with the other dogs in her foster home and would do well in a home with a fenced yard so that she can play safely. She also gets along with cats. Juda is housebroken, crate trained and weighs approximately 65 lbs. She has a lot of love to give and is just waiting for the right person to come along.

Rascal
is a spunky 6-8 year old Chihuahua/Dachshund mix. He is brindle in color and weighs approximately 10 lbs. Rascal does well with other dogs, and loves to cuddle with his foster mom and dad. He is crate trained and housebroken. Rascal can be shy when meeting new people, but quickly warms up. He likes to talk to his people with cute grunts and growls. Because of Rascal’s small size and personality, we will not adopt into a home with children. Rascal is Photo courtesy of Steph Skardal Photography neutered, up-to-date on shots, heartworm negative and on monthly heartworm and flea prevention. Call AARF at 768-7387 if you are interested in adopting Rascal. n
Cheyenne
Meet Xevon! She is a 5 year-old Husky mix and weighs about 60 lbs. She has stunning baby blue eyes and the softest white-gold fur! She is very loving and affectionate with her people. She is house, crate, and leash trained. She knows basic obedience commands and also loves to fetch. Xevon gets along with most other dogs after a proper introduction, but not all, so its best if she goes to a home where Photo courtesy of Steph Skardal Photography she is the only dog. Since she does not get along with cats, she cannot be placed in a home with any, no exceptions. We would prefer a fenced yard for her to run and play in safely, but this is not a requirement.
was found with her siblings (Muggsy, Duncan and Piccolo) on the WFU campus. She’s a classic tabby with white highlights. Her foster mom interviewed all the kittens, and here’s what Cheyenne had to say about herself: “I’m pretty adventurous & love meeting new people. I’m the first one to stick my nose into things. My favorite toys are balls (although I sometimes think they’re chasing me.) I love to cuddle & I’m the first to the door when I hear my foster mom come to play with us.” Her date of birth is approximately 3/26/2012.

This 1-year-old Border Terrier mix loves geocaching, the great outdoors, riding in cars and quiet nights at home. This versatile dog would love a family to share the summer and all seasons with!

a doubt, one really cute and cuddly kitten. I am a gorgeous, soft buff colored male tabby. I love to play and chase toys and I can keep up with the big boys. After running around, I like to curl up on a nice warm lap and get in a few zzzzzzz. I get along with both my foster brother dog and foster brother cats. I was born about March 25th and am looking for a home where my good looks and charming personality will be appreciated. Built Ford Tough.
is newest to our adoption center. She is a little girl that was dumped out at a nearby shopping center all by herself. Can you imagine doing anything mean to this sweetie? Susannah has all the good qualities every kitten should have. She is super sweet, social, healthy, and loves people. Susannah was born in March of this year and is a domestic short hair kitten. We love our little Susannah but she deserves her own family. Could you be that family?

Little Raggedy Ann is a sweet red head and is sister to Raggedy Andy. Our Annie is also sister to an Andy and is just as sweet and cute as the real Raggedy Ann. A very nice lady rescued Annie and found the Animal Rescue & Foster Program to foster her and brother Andy. Annie is a domestic short haired orange tabby. It is rare that you find a female orange tabby so we think our Annie is a diamond in the rough. Annie was born in early April and is really looking forward to having her very own family. She is the perfect, playful, entertaining kitten.
Gretel is a fairy tale because they are going to get their fair tale ending. Rescued from a kind man and his Pit Bulls (yes, they were kind also), Hansel and Gretel deserve to be given as much love as they give. toy poodle, about 7 lbs., with lovely silvery fur who is quiet, gentle and oh so sweet! She is friendly to strangers and is good with other small, nice dogs. She has a naturally submissive, easy-going personality and is a wonderful companion and lap warmer. She’s about 7-8 years young & loves playing with toys. She has one good eye and one cataract.
Gorgeous 2 year old Sasha spent years being a mama dog and now she’s ready to be loved by a family of her own. She is amazing - extremely good natured and calm, naturally submissive. She loves making new friends, greeting everyone with wags and a smile. She’s friendly to other dogs, too. Sasha sits on command and loves being a good girl. This delightful doll is wonderfully huggable and playful.

Harmony
Flute and Dulcimer.
is a sweet calico/ Tabico kitty that was turned over to NC CAT on the verge of giving birth. She proved to be a very good momma, and her five kittens, Banjo, Dulcimer, Flute, Melody and Treble have grown and are now ready for adoption too! Why not let Harmony bring a little music into your life?
Flute, the tiniest of Harmony’s kittens, is also the boldest. She is a Manx, meaning that she has absolutely no tail! She scampers throughout the house like a little bunny and looks so comical that you will find her irresistible. Her sister, Dulcimer, is just a bit quieter—her favorite thing to do is to purr! She is a dilute calico with just a small nub of a tail, which she holds up high just as proud as can be. Both of these little girls are so lovable—won’t you let them make some sweet music for you?

Little Checkers won’t be small for long—he promises to grow up to be a big boy. A classic orange tabby Maine Coon mix, he is as playful and affectionate as all Maine Coons are. only one in her litter that managed to survive a dog attack. She was close to death when she was found, but has an amazing will to live. Though she lost her hind foot, she is very well-adjusted, outgoing and friendly; she doesn’t know a stranger! She gets along just fine with her partial leg and plays right along with all her foster siblings. Peggy Sue is a special kitty--do you have a special place in your heart for her?

Hershey. Who doesn’t love those
Mickey came to Red Dog
little Hershey kisses that melt in your mouth? Well, Hershey, one of our newer dogs, will melt your heart instead! Hershey is super sweet and rich with love. He is looking for a new forever family since his former owners had to move and can no longer keep him. He too was raised with dogs, cats, and kids. He is a tad shier than his brother Patrick, but is extra sweet once you get to know him. Granted, getting to know him simply takes a sweet voice and a quiet pet. Once you do that, he just melts in to you for some good ol’ loving. You certainly don’t want someone else to snatch up his sweetness first.
Farm after being pulled from a neglectful situation. He is 10 years old but is in very good health for a dog his age. He loves to cuddle with you or under any blanket! His foster mom reports he is a dream dog and would make an excellent companion for someone. Mickey would love to find a home with or without other animals in it. His only request is for a nice blanket to curl up under when you are busy and someone to hang out with. He rides well in a car and is up for any adventure. Due to his age, Mickey’s adoption fee has been waived for the right home.

New Goats. On
Ollie originally
June 10th we took in 21 goats from a situation in which the owner could no longer care for them and did not have adequate space for the herd. We have settled all the goats into foster homes and our veterinarians have castrated all of the males and vaccinated and dewormed everyone. There are four large breed goats (1 female Boer, 1 female Nubian and two large mixes) who are quite tame and a plethora of younger Nigerians and crosses (including seven kids) who are quite skittish. We have separated them out into smaller herds and you can visit our website to read all about their personalities and descriptions.
came to us with a Body Score of a 1 and was nursed back to health by RDF. He received his ground training and under-saddle refresher with James Cooler of Cooler Horsemanship last summer. Ollie is a 10 year-old strapping, well-muscled and handsome liver chestnut Quarter Horse who stands at 16.3 hands. He had a history of abuse and should be adopted by someone who has horse experience as he can be pushy with a less experienced individual. Ollie has not been ridden since late 2011.

Poncho
Klondike Bar. Oh, what
came to Red Dog Farm along with Skittles (a Macaw) when their owner could no longer care for them. He is quite social once he bonds with you. He is very talkative and enjoys commanding the dogs in his foster home by stirring them up and asking if they have to go “pee pee” or go outside. He also loves to whistle and pretend to be talking on a phone. He has found the joys of a good movie, especially musicals and Disney films. Poncho is such a good talker that his foster mom doesn’t want him picking up any bad noises so PG only movies please. Poncho is turning out to be quite friendly and is remembering his birdie manners very well. He still will need an experienced owner but otherwise should do well adjusting in a new home.
would you do for a Klondike Bar? This adorable little guy is 100% sweet and irresistible! Poor little Klondike was found in a local neighborhood all by himself with no other siblings or mother cat. Therefore, he quickly thinks everyone is his mother and wants to follow you around the house. He is your typical kitten and wants to sleep, play and eat all day long. He loves to “talk” to you and would be happy if you could simply talk to him and pet him all day long. He is not shy around other animals or children and will make a great companion for any family.

Sonic
is a very special kitten. He was born in the shelter and was placed in a loving foster home with his mother when he was just 6 days old. Sonic has a condition which is similar to cerebral palsy in humans (cerebellar hypoplasia). He has a mild case with an unusual gait and an occasional loss of balance, yet is predicted to have a normal life expectancy. He loves food and does great with the litter box. He is a wonderful, sweet, amazing kitten and his foster parents adore him (as you will too)! He is up-to-date on his vaccines and will soon be spayed as part of his adoption fee. Meet Sonic by calling the Guilford County Animal Shelter at 297-5020 and ask for him by ID 15657855. Sonic is sponsored in honor of Karen Michael by Charlie

Should You Shave Your Dog????
By Hayley Keyes, ICMG Nanhall Pet Spa
I
n the spring and summer months, people often ask their groomers to shave their dogs because they are worried about the dog being too hot, or because the dogs shed more than in the colder months. These breeds include Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Chowsany breed that has a smooth or double coat. The best way to keep a dog’s shedding to a minimum and keep the dog cool, is to brush out the dead undercoat. This should be done at least six times a year. This will keep the hair from becoming too thick or matted during the warmer seasons and allow the skin to breathe. While on the surface, it makes sense that shorter hair would mean a cooler dog, it’s not necessarily true. Humans perspire all over to cool their bodies, however, dogs perspire only by panting, and through their pads and nose. While undercoat can certainly keep the heat in, shaving it damages the skin and the coat. However, there are times groomers have no
choice but to shave a dog because of matting, and shaving is a far better answer than to have the dog go through the pain of dematting. Clipper blades clip all hair indiscriminately, shaving both the softer undercoat that provides warmth, and the coarse guard hairs that protect the skin from underbrush and direct sunlight. When the new coat starts coming in, it weaves into the sheared undercoat and you get a much thicker undercoat that is unhealthy, dense and does not come out naturally. Even worse, double coated dogs sometimes experience post-clipping ALOPECIA when clipped short, which means the coat may not grow back, may grow back in patches or may take years to grow back. Clipping a dog can also change both the texture and the color of the coat. Brushing and combing dogs thoroughly, and having them bathed and groomed frequently is the best way to keep shedding to a minimum.
Above is a dog that was clipped three years ago. Below is what she looked like as a puppy!

Say hello to Bristol, a new addition to our basset family. She’s a fiveyear old basset with beautiful coloring on her long, soft ears! She came from the shelter extremely emaciated, Carolina Basset Hound Rescue so foster mom is working hard to get those stick-out ribs to disappear. She’s still a bit skittish, but once she sees what it’s like to be loved and cared for, she’ll be able to relax so everyone can see just how sweet she really is. Fortunately, Bristol is heartworm negative, so once she’s spent a little time getting acclimated to life with a loving family, she’ll be ready for her own forever home. For more information about Bristol or our other adoptable basset hounds, please visit our website at www.cbhr.com or contact Rebecca Gering at rgering@triad.rr.com. n

off the street. These dogs are very intuitive, very disciplined, highly trained and very gentle. The therapeutic visits are coordinated by the child life specialists or recreational therapists. Sometimes it takes a little work just to establish trust. One particular little girl wasn’t immediately smitten, that happened later. Even though she saw the animal’s gentle demeanor and wagging tail, she still wasn’t convinced. She asked, “Does this dog have ‘friendly teeth?’” But, once the bond is established, a common response from parents is, “That is the first smile we have seen today” or “Can the dog stay with us all day.” The bond between patient and animal is often so deep as to make it impossible to verbalize. There are stories of photos that are taken with dogs that are treasured and of former patients coming back simply to see “their” dog. A therapy dog’s instinct is uncanny. When meeting a patient for the first time, who had lost use of an arm, the dog seemed to sense that and 3,000 years ago it was written “A merry immediately tried to nuzzle the hand on that arm. heart doeth good like a medicine, but a Patients, nurses and therapists are convinced the broken spirit drieth the bones.” Touchingly, dog intuitively sensed the damaged arm and atthis relates what transpires regularly at tempted to impart her healing love. hospitals and health care facilities. Lina, a Golden Retriever, has put in countless hours helping children and adults forget about their troubles for a while. that’s the way it should be.” It needs to be recognized that the handlers are partners with their dogs. They are part of a team. Their dedication and selflessness allows the dogs to do their wondrous work. Without them nothing would happen. These animals give a special measure of care, happiness and, need it be said, unconditional love that all the doctors, nurses and staff put together can only hope to approach. Two handlers have volunteered their time for a combined 21 years. There is a special degree of oneness and unity between them and their animals. They and their dogs have ministered to thousands of patients during that time and have touched many lives. Their dogs love coming to the hospital. They joyously greet the staff, love visiting all the patients and their families. Smiles in difficult life circumstances are sometimes hard to find. These “angels with four paws”, while highly trained, work through instinct. They always know who the patient is and who needs a few minutes of distraction, escape and love. The dogs have not only visited in patients’ rooms but have been allowed in intensive care areas. Their impact is so positive that in special cases they are allowed to be with a patient during medical procedures. The list goes on and on...there is not room in this whole magazine to record the good these animals do. Some benefits can be measured in dollars, these can’t. They are priceless! trepid, is a lean, mean running machine. He ran hard in lots of races, but would rather live in your home. He is a very friendly 2 ½ year-old fawn male, who loves toys. Clover, 1 to 1.5 years old, was surrendered to our rescue by her caring owner. Clover was recently adopted from a local shelter but much to her new owner’s dismay, Clover HATES cats. Clover’s new owner doesn’t have a fenced in yard so when her children would open the door, out flew Clover and straight towards the neighbor’s cats. We were asked if we Finding Great Homes for Jack Russell Terriers had room in our rescue for Clover and we gladly said yes. Clover is smart, athletic and a loving dog. She does great with other animals and small children - just no cats please! Clover is leash trained and we’ve started her crate training. Clover’s adoption fee is $350. To give Clover a great home, contact Robin at 336-414-1373 or Robin@insightrecruiters.com. n

Let Me Go Barrier Frustration in Dogs
By Jan Wilson
R
esponsible dog ownership requires us to keep dogs safe within our property limits. The most common ways to keep dogs contained are known as barriers, which come in many forms. The most common forms are traditional fences, electronic/invisible fences and tethers. Even your front window or a leash is a barrier to your dog! Unfortunately, barriers can cause behavioral issues in dogs. Barrier or restraint frustration is a side effect and occurs when a dog can see but cannot reach something he wants. Over time, this causes anxiety and stress, and the build up of stress can result in behavior problems such as excessive barking, fence running, spinning and eventually, aggression. Even a normally friendly dog that becomes highly excited and stressed may become aggressive under these circumstances. Popular scenarios that can accelerate barrier frustration include: 1) The dog next door. They can see each other through the fence, but are not allowed to meet. They begin to run the fence line. The play will turn to aggression over time. 2) People walking down the sidewalk in populated neighborhoods. Your dog would love to meet these people, but never gets the opportunity. The people walk or jog by without a word. 3) Children who tease your dog, worse yet, throw things at him. 4) Dogs that are stimulated by movement get incredibly stressed when they can’t reach cars, bikes, etc. This is very common in herding breeds.
What to do? Preventing the problem is the best form of action. Keep your neighborhood activity in mind when installing your fence. A privacy fence installed to block visibility to the road
38
and sidewalk will help. Think twice before installing a fence in the front yard. Limit the amount of time your dog spends outside unsupervised. Leaving your dog outside all day while you are at work will give him plenty of time to develop these unwanted behaviors. The longer the dog practices the behavior, the harder it will be to modify.
Behavior Modification If your dog is already showing signs of barrier frustration, there are some steps that you can take to modify the behavior. The number one focus is to limit visibility and triggers. The triggers are what will upset your dog. If the children next door are most active in the early evening, don’t let your dog outside unsupervised at that time. If there are more pedestrians in the early evening, try to keep your dog inside. You must be present to interrupt your dog before his anxiety gets to a level where he cannot control himself. Teach him a rock solid recall (coming when called) and practice within your yard. The ability to call your dog and redirect his behavior to something more constructive will help tremendously. Practice some obedience commands or a trick for some high value treats. Make sure your dog gets some socialization time outside his contained area. Walking him regularly and, if possible, have regular play dates with compatible dogs. When he is able to interact in the environment outside his home, his frustration will decrease. Obedience classes are a great option. A good obedience class will help teach your dog self
July 2012 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
control and will also teach him to focus on you. Your dog will find it more rewarding to work for you, rather than get upset about what he cannot have. The key to managing barrier frustration is behavior modification and constant management of your dog’s environment. By controlling your dog’s environment and his known “triggers” you will prevent him from going back to his old ways. If you feel your dog is not making progress, please seek the help of a behavior professional.

Casey.
(NCSR #364) is 5-1/2 years old with natural ears and tail and beautiful white/ beige coat! Given to a rescue because he had bladder stones, and the owner was not able to get him the surgery he needed. Fully recovered from surgery, he’s ready to find his ‘furever’ home. Casey must remain on special food for the rest of his life to preclude recurrence of his stones but the food is not too expensive (comparable to a good, high-quality dog food). NC Schnauzer Rescue Casey is in great health and his foster home says he is the smartest dog they’ve ever known! He loves walks, playing ball, squeaker toys and will cuddle and lay in your lap if you like. Jackson’s Story A Call for Responsible Pet Ownership
By Kim Thore and Dr. Jon Epstein
I
t takes just a seed for a garden to grow. It takes just a smile to develop a friendship. And as we learned just over a year ago, it takes just one dog to change your life… I remember when we met and it was love at first sight. I don’t think I had ever seen something so tiny; he was so small he had to be in a ferret harness, instead of a collar. As luck would have it, he was up for adoption soon after we met and when I looked down and he looked up simultaneously, I realized I had found my dog, and he had found his person. I brought him home for Christmas and suddenly the house became a home and the people became a family. Jon, my partner, had told me that when a dog chooses you, it is like no other feeling…and I can say truer words were never spoken. He changed all of us. Jon had a buddy, who watched him practice guitar and danced every time he put on his shoes to go out for a romp in the grass, and I watched as Jon patiently trained him to sit, lay, and be a good dog which was never the hard part. I got to see Jon become another kind of Dad, one who took joy in the life of a four legged friend and how Jackson saw the world. I was forever changed, finally understanding the true meaning of unconditional love.
Life is cruel to little things. Just as quickly as Jackson entered our lives and filled our hearts, he was taken away from us. He was the victim of an attack Easter Morning 2011, by three dogs 42
— two small, untrained, poodles and a pit bull — and one family of very irresponsible dog owners. Three feet from our front door, in front of us, Jackson was savagely attacked and brutally killed in our hallway, in less than 30 seconds. We soon discovered, after filing a complaint with Animal Control, that here in Forsyth County there is some recourse for the victims in these matters. However, the ordinances regarding the requirements for dog ownership and control, are too vague and don’t address steps that we feel should be taken after a fatal and unprovoked dog attack. The best we could do, we were told, was to sue the owners of the pit bull in civil court for the cost of our “property,” Jackson. That might work for others, but it didn’t work for us. Jackson was not our “property,” he was our friend, and there is no amount of money that can replace that, and the belief that there is, was simply insulting. There are no bad dogs, just bad owners. We knew that Jackson’s death was the result of irresponsible pet ownership.
July 2012 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
Unfortunately, we soon found out we were not alone. A few weeks after Jackson’s death, hundreds of emails, posts on Facebook, cards and phone calls poured in and we knew we had a responsibility. Jackson’s death could not be in vain. Too many others had lost their friends to unprovoked attacks and simply didn’t know what to do. Recently, in March of this year, there were four similar attacks in the Triad. Andrea Johnson lost three dogs, one after another in nine months to the same aggressor dogs in her neighborhood; Andrea Ward and her three dogs were attacked while walking by a stray dog and unfortunately there are countless more cases that go unreported. So we started a petition, a website and a push for Jackson’s Law, and recently joined forces with the originators of Fabian’s Law in Arizona which was passed last year. The goal is not to target specific breeds, complicate the laws and ordinances or punish dogs unnecessarily. Instead, we hope to stop the cycle of dogs killing other dogs in unprovoked attacks due to reckless and irresponsible owners and give all dogs the opportunity for a safe and nonviolent life. We also hope the changes we propose erase any ambiguity in the current laws and ordinances. It’s the least we can do, since Jackson erased all of the ambiguity in our lives. He made life simple, proving that in the end, “ The love you take is equal to the love you make”. For more information please visit www.jacksons-law.org or Support Jackson’s Law on Facebook & Causes.org.
