Letter from the Editors
Welcome to Jennifer Frazier
Deb Printup
O
ur new publication Triad Happy Tails Magazine is dedicated to saving the lives of animals through adoptions. Each month, we will provide up-to-date photos and bios of animals available from the Guilford County Animal Shelter, and numerous rescue organizations in the Triad area. A full list of all these organizations may be found inside. We also publish a calendar of events for the Guilford County Animal Shelter, these rescue
organizations, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, plus the Humane Society of the Piedmont. Educating the public on responsible pet guardianship as well as local animal welfare issues are a part of our mission. In addition to our “stars” we will also feature articles, contests and information to educate, inform and entertain. It is our wish to become a publication you will look forward to each month and use as a resource to help us all become better pet guardians. We will always be open to suggestions and ways to make ourselves better. Triad Happy Tails Magazine works to bridge the gap between shelters, rescue groups and individuals by bringing the adoptees to them. People can read the bios and look at the photos, before driving over to pick up their new best friend. Please join us in our quest to save the lives of animals, and in turn, your lives will be enriched as well. In conclusion, we would not be able to print and distribute our magazine if it were not for our advertisers. We went to them with untested ideas and they had the faith and courage to open their hearts and their wallets. Please take note of who these special people and businesses are and please patronize them whenever possible. They certainly deserve thanks for their commitment to helping those who cannot speak for themselves.

Triad Stage – 10 Seasons of Professional Theater in Greensboro
T
riad Stage began as the dream of creating a professional not-for-profit regional theater to serve the communities of the Triad. Co-founders Preston Lane and Richard Whittington forged their artistic partnership as graduate students at the Yale School of Drama. After managing a theater in Connecticut, they undertook the three-year task of opening their own theater in the heart of historic Greensboro. As it now enters its tenth season, Triad Stage has become a major voice in the development of the new American theater and earned accolades on the national, state and local levels. With its 300-seat MainStage and 80-seat UpStage Cabaret performance spaces, Triad Stage presents a number of works each season to over 35,000 patrons from across the region. The theater creates each modern classic and world premiere especially for its audiences. You can find out more about Triad Stage and its productions on their website: www.triadstage.org or by calling the box office at (336) 272-0160 or toll-free (866) 579-TIXX. The theater is located at 232 South Elm Street in downtown Greensboro. Triad Happy Tails Magazine July 2010

S
usie, the amazing pit bullshepherd mix, captured our attention and nearly broke our hearts when she was found abandoned last year in a Greensboro park with second and third degree burns on more than 60 percent of her body. She had a broken jaw and her ears were nearly burned off. Animal Control was called and proceeded to take Susie to the Guilford County Animal Shelter to determine what should be done. Upon taking one look at Susie, Marsha Williams, director of the shelter, knew she had to help. She quickly decided that this puppy, who was looking her in the eyes and wagging her tail, should have the chance to live. The vet technician at the shelter then quickly began working on Susie. In the beginning, Bob and Roberta Wall took Susie in and provided her with a foster home as she began to heal. Her condition
required daily trips to the shelter for treatment by the vet technicians. After a couple of months, Susie was adopted by Donna Lawrence who owns Kutting Edge Salon in Greensboro. Donna and friends have gone to great lengths to get stricter laws passed regarding animal cruelty. Existing North Carolina laws do not allow a judge to give jail time to first-time offenders charged with Felony Cruelty to Animals. They can only receive probation. Senator Don Vaughan and House Representatives Pricey Harrison and Maggie Jeffus introduced Susie’s Law into the General Assembly, which would reclassify Felony

In addition, it would elevate the misdemeanor conviction of intentionally starving an animal to a Class H felony, which would also allow jail time, if convicted. Their hard work and diligence has finally paid off. Susie’s Law was unanimously passed by the House of Representatives and most recently, by the NC State Senate. The bill will now go to Governor Bev Perdue to be signed into law. At the time this magazine went to press, the bill had not yet been signed. If signed by Governor Perdue, Susie’s Law should go into effect December 1, 2010. Cases of animal cruelty are typically perceived as isolated incidents with no relationship to human behavior. However, according to a 3-year study by the Massachusetts SPCA and Northeastern University, animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against others and four times more likely to commit property damage crimes than those with no history of animal abuse. This domino effect can only be halted when we address the issue at its root, which is to properly punish and rehabilitate the animal abuser in the first place.

Millie’s mom had to go into assisted living and could not take Millie, or her brother Micah, with her. They would love to be adopted together but realize that seldom happens. Millie is feline friendly but has never lived with a dog. She is housetrained and quite the affectionate girl, almost always asking for rubs. She is spayed and up to date on her shots.

Did you know that this is the Year of the Tabby? Well, it is, or so it seems, because there are a lot of us out there for adoption. But, all of us Tabbies with the Animal Rescue & Foster Program are special Tabbies! For instance, I am a ball of energy! I love to play and run around and love to get new toys! I like to take naps beside you or near you. I like to sit in the sun and look out the window. I was born on 8/1/09 and I’m ready to find my forever home. Are you in need of a special Tabby in your life? If so, I’m your girl! Contact ARFP at 574-9600 to find out how to adopt me. My adoption fee is only $100!

is my name! I was born March 2nd. Fortunately, my brothers and I were born underneath the home of a couple who love kitties. They brought my mom and us kids into the loving arms of ARFP. I’m sweet as can be. I love to play with my siblings, and I also love my foster mom’s grown up kitties. My fur is so soft that it is a joy to pet me. Cat toys just rock, and I will play with them for long periods of time. When I start to get sleepy, you might just hear me purring loudly if you pet me. I am up to date with routine shots, neutered, and house-trained and looking forward to finding the home of my dreams! My adoption fee is $100. Call 574-9600 to find out more.

1/25/10 and is a happy and playful little puppy. He might be part Terrier, part Chihuahua, and maybe even part of something else. Charlie enjoys playing with toys and other dogs. One of his favorite things to do is climb in his toy basket and play or even take a quick nap! He is quite an active little guy. Charlie is crate-trained and well on his way to being house-trained. He is trying to learn good manners and has already learned sit and down. Charlie will do best in a home with adults or one with older children because of his tiny size. He is up-to-date with routine shots and will be neutered prior to adoption. A fenced in yard is required.
mother, homeless and sick, in a shelter on death row. When ARFP received pictures of Amber, she was emaciated and nursing 9 very young puppies. Four days later she broke with the deadly Parvo virus. She was scheduled to die in the Lee County Shelter and then almost died several times while trying to fight off Parvo. Amber is healthy now and needs a very special home. Her perfect home would be a quiet one with at least one other dog. She says no loud, energetic, children please. She was born approximately 1/1/08, is spayed, negative for heartworms, and is up to date on her shots. She is crate-trained and house-trained.

Dr. Cecilia Ho is a graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. She decided to specialize in feline medicine two years into private practice as she found feline medicine to be more challenging and rewarding. She currently shares her home with five cats- all of which have her trained to their beck and call. And yes, she scoops constantly and tirelessly daily from all of her litterboxes!
CAT CARE HOSPITAL
What can I do to correct my cat’s litterbox habits?
Cats have changed little since the first domesticated feline crept out of the woods and into our homes. However, as our life styles have changed so have those of our cats. The majority of cats nowadays live their entire lives safely indoors, greatly increasing their lifespan. However, their loss of freedom translates into a greater dependence on us, as their caretakers. Paramount among those needs is the litterbox. Behavioral issues relating to the use or, lack thereof, of the litterbox, remain the top reason why cats are surrendered at shelters. The concept of a litterbox would appear to be very simple. All you need is some sort of container, some substrate to absorb the waste material and some way of removing said material. However, a visit to any pet store will reveal a mind-boggling, dazzling array of litterbox pans, litter and all the associated paraphernalia. Unfortunately, the large majority of these products were developed and marketed with people in mind instead of cats. Here are a few tips for providing the ideal litterbox environment The rule of thumb for the number of litterboxes is to provide one litterbox per cat plus one extra. This ensures there are sufficient litterboxes for all the cats in the household. Some cats adamantly refuse to use a box if it has already been soiled by another cat. Also place litterboxes at each level of a home. In multi cat households, some of the more dominant cats will guard access to the litterboxes causing the more timid cats to soil inappropriately elsewhere rather than risk antagonizing the aggressive cat. Older cats with arthritis or medical issues that lead them to urinate more often and in larger volumes and need to have quick, easy access to their litterboxes. It is good idea to use the largest litterbox possible that will fit into the space allotted for it. An open, unhooded litterbox is best. Hooded litterboxes reduce the interior space for the cat to maneuver and also trap odors within that small space, hides clumps of urine and feces from view, making it easier to ignore scooping and cleaning out the box. It is critically important to scoop and clean at least once daily, preferably twice. Cats are fastidious creatures and if given a choice will soil in a clean area. Scooping daily encourages the cat to continue using the litterbox. Placement of the litterbox is also key, It is recommended that a litterbox be placed in an area that is quiet and receives little foot traffic. The different types of litter available nowadays is truly astounding Unfortunately a large number of these litters cater to human sensibilities rather than the cat. A study funded by the Cornell Feline Health Center emphatically proved that the type of litter most preferred by cats is unscented, clumps readily and is very fine and soft to the touch. Clumping litter was vastly preferred over regular, clay litter, is easier to clean and allows all of the waste material to be removed when scooped, leaving the remainder clean. Hopefully these tips will help you establish a litterbox routine that keeps you and your cat coexisting happily. When in doubt about a certain product, discuss it first with your veterinarian before subjecting your cat to changes that may be detrimental to its continued use of its litterbox.

camera does not do justice to this girl. She is small with a very lovely medium length grey coat that is very soft to pet. Sacajawea was calm until we offered her a toy to play with. is a happy boy and aims to please. He is a playful black and white border collie and is about 1 year old now. Snowshoe loves to get some hugs and return the affection to you. He has become a little hyper waiting for his new home, but after he has been out for awhile, he does settle down for some kind attention. He will be a medium sized dog when grown at 30-35 lbs. We believe he had a prior owner as he was sporting a collar on his arrival. With some gentle but firm instruction, Snowshoe may be the best k-9 companion you have ever had. He has been neutered since his arrival.
Please ask for Angel by ID 9268062. She has been sponsored for $40 off her adoption fee by a K-9 lover!

very pretty lab mix that some of the volunteers just love! They say she is very sweet, gentle and walks well on a leash. So even though she was found by Animal Control, she had a loving owner at some point that taught her some acceptable behavior. Crickett is just 1 year old and weighs about 35 lbs. She has been spayed since she joined us here at the shelter too. All she needs now is the family that is a perfect match that will give her a permanent home in life.

(pictured) and his brother Sherbert are 7 weeks old and were found abondoned by a good samaritan. They are very social kittens who love belly rubs and playing. Sherbert prefers to be doted on and will eventually start to play after getting loved on first. Sorbet is the more playful of the two although he doesn’t mind getting petted. If he were a human, Sorbet would be the athlete while Sherbert would be the bookworm or fashionista. They don’t mind other cats or dogs. They love people and would do well going together or separate to a new forever home. They will both need someone willing to brush them as they already have beautiful long coats.

a small lab? Then Pete is your man! Pete was found as a stray wandering the streets of High Point. He is one year old, about 55 pounds and always happy and ready to have fun. He is a typical lab and will forever be young at heart. He enjoys other dogs and people. Pete also doesn’t seem to mind Kiwi, the Red Dog Farm office kitty. Pete is ready to go to his new furever home and has been vaccinated,
Ba Ba
Pgymy goats and were surrendered to us by Forsyth County animal control after being found as strays. “Franklin” (black male) and “Eleanor” (white and tan female) are very social and enjoy human interaction. Our veterinarian guessed Franklin to be about a year old and Eleanor to be two or three years old. Franklin has now been castrated, but because he came to us intact, Eleanor could be pregnant. Both have been vaccinated and dewormed. These two are very bonded and we’d like to keep them together.
the black Sheep is 1-2 years old. “Ba Ba” was found as a stray in Forsyth County and surrendered to animal control, who called us. She is extremely friendly and not a bit fearful of people. She especially likes to have her head scratched. Ba Ba has a deformed hoof that our veterinarian checked out, trimmed, and determined is not painful to her. She does not limp at all. She has been vaccinated and is ready to go to a new home. Because we don’t know her history, we don’t know whether she is pregnant. What a sweet girl!
The joint adoption fee is $250. Please visit www.reddogfarm.com.

Marley
Ruby
is a young quarterhorse who was seized in a neglect case by the Danville Virginia Humane Society. He spent the fall of 2009 and early 2010 in a foster home where he gained weight, was vaccinated, dewormed and gelded, learned to trust humans and learned to stand to be brushed, have his feet trimmed, etc. Marley then moved to a second foster home and now follows his foster mom around the field and asks to be petted. He stands nicely (even off halter) to be groomed and has learned to love the feel of a curry comb and shedding blade, even on his belly. He is also up for a full-fledged “bear hug” around his neck and isn’t the least bit shy anymore. He has been ponied in a training demo and learned to walk over a tarp.
is a 7 year old Australian shepherd and came to Red Dog Farm after being found trying to herd horses in someone’s pasture. Ruby is a sweet girl with plenty of energy and life still left in her. Her foster mom says she acts more like a three year old dog rather than a seven year old girl. Ruby has a herding instinct but does fine with other animals as long as they don’t run. She does well with other dogs and loves people. She would do best in a home that could incorporate her in to some of their daily activities, like picking the kids up from school or getting the mail. She enjoys walks and playing in the backyard. Ruby is a typical Australian Shepherd and is looking for a family to love and care for.
Marley’s adoption fee is currently $750. Visit www.reddogfarm.com.

Our Mission Statement: “With respect for all life, The HSP will lead the community in efforts to eliminate animal cruelty and the tragedies of pet overpopulation through an aggressive spay and neuter program.”
The Humane Society of the Piedmont, Inc. is not associated with any national group, but exists as a local association dedicated to the improvement of life for our local animal citizens. Our facility on Wendover Avenue is used to house a privately owned spay and neuter clinic which pays a modest fee to use our state-of-the-art operating arena and equipment. We believe that the low-cost spaying and neutering of animals is the quickest and most humane way to reduce the animal population to manageable proportions which will result in the betterment of life for animals and humans alike. Nigel
is 3.5 years old, 23 lbs. and a very smart and trainable dog with a lot of energy. He knows basic obedience commands and does well on a leash and is also crate-trained and house-trained. His foster family says he enjoys daily walks and playing in the yard. He loves to cuddle up with them or one of the other dogs, especially if Boston Terrier Rescue of NC there is a blanket to share. Dunlap
After 8 to 10 years of loyalty, I was packed up in the car for a ride that ended in a place they called “the shelter.” Full of barking dogs and cages with cold cement floors, this place scared and confused me. A lady came and told me that I deserved a better retirement home German Shepherd Rescue & Adoptions than this and I was taken to a lovely temporary home. I like children, other dogs and I even know to leave cats alone. My joints are a little stiff, and I don’t see as well as I used to but I love to go for walks and just hang out. I am easy to pick out of a crowd, I will be the one missing a tail!

He was scheduled to be put to sleep so a volunteer at the shelter asked if we had room in our rescue for Dunlap and we said yes. Winston enjoys being outside and loves playing Frisbee. He gets along great with Triad Golden Retriever Rescue his foster family’s Golden and shares toys and beds. He is gentle around children and loves being near his foster family. He is also fine with people who aren’t too active.
I’m Edward, a real gentleman with kids, chickens, cats and other dogs. I’m not loose with my affections and it may take me a while to get to know you, but when I do, I’m all yours. Mostly I’m perfectly content to sit by your side and be with you. As to looks, well, I don’t have the longest ears Carolina Basset Hound Rescue in bassetdom, but they do the job (and I might add, they don’t get all funky like the other bassets’ ears.) The body is definitely by Basset. Dreamy brown eyes. I’ve got an awesome nose, and if you want to point me towards a scent I’ll be very happy to track it down for you. Training Your Dog
Thunderstorm Phobias
B
Melanie has over three decades of experience training dogs, and over two decades of experience as a canine behavioral consultant. She has been published in numerous national dog magazines , holds the CDT designation and is an evaluator of trainers for the International Association of Canine Professionals. She is a handler of numerous AKC champion dogs as well as an experienced animal rescue volunteer who continues to rescue and foster dogs of all breeds and mixes.
oom - Flash - yikes, where is Fido? Have you ever experienced the sight of a dog frantically pacing, whining, or diving for cover the instant thunder rumbles in the distance? Or perhaps your dog simply plasters himself to your body, and trembles until a storm is over? Here are a few tips to help get your canine friend safely through storm season.
Don’t accidentally reinforce your dog’s fearful behavior. 1. Try desensitization with a CD of storm noises. Initially play it very softly, pairing it with your dog’s favorite treats. Increasing the volume gradually during each training session as your dog becomes more comfortable. Unfortunately noise is only part of the issue, and it is almost impossible to duplicate things such as changes in barometer pressure so desensitization has its limits. 2. Reduce the possibility that static electricity is part of the issue by rubbing the
dog all over with a dryer sheet, such as the unscented version of “Bounce®”. You can also rub this on yourself as well, so you do not accidentally shock your dog when you touch him on a stormy day. 3. Exercise helps lower anxiety levels, because it increases the production of calming endorphins. During storm season, try getting up earlier and taking your dog for a long walk before you leave for work or errands. 4. Medications, such as a daily antianxiety medication, with tranquilizers added on stormy days, are often needed. Keep in mind that tranquilizers must be given at least an hour before he is able to sense the storm’s approach. This can be difficult in climates where storms arise suddenly, Look for a dog-loving stayat-home neighbor who can sit with your dog if a storm arises, or at least come over long enough to give your dog his med if a storm is approaching. 5. Be sure your dog is in a safe place if he must be left alone during a day when a storm is likely. Doggie day care can be a good option during storm-prone months, particularly for dogs who cannot handle being in a comfy crate while you are
away. Some dogs do feel secure in the crate and will not harm themselves trying to get out during a storm, but unfortunately, some panic and do get hurt. Safety is of the highest importance, because storm phobic dogs often will tear through fencing, even break through windows and doors, if left alone during a storm. 6. When you are home during the stormy event, be careful not to accidentally reinforce your dog’s fearful behavior by coddling him during storms. If you remain calm and act as if everything is normal, then your dog will be less fearful. Using a Comfort Zone DAP® plug-in where the dog will be staying can also be very helpful. Mac.
Jo-Jo.
You will not find a more loyal companion than my good buddy Mac! He is simply one happy guy who loves his people! Mac is around 10 years old, but he is an energetic “senior citizen”! Mac loves nothing better than to go for a walk or hang out beside you on the couch while watching some TV. He also loves to go on car rides. Mac is a small size lab (about 50 lbs). He takes daily Lab Rescue of NC medication, but that doesn’t slow him down! If you think you have a place in your home and heart for the Macman, you must see him “in person”. I just can’t do justice to his “happy, loving Lab personality” with words alone.
“Hi!! I am Jo-Jo and it is so nice to meet you (lick, lick, kiss, kiss)!! As you can see from my big grin, I am a happy little guy! I will be your best friend and snuggle boy! I like to go for walks, crash out in your lap after, Friends of Penny Min Pin Rescue and give lots of affection. I am however, an alpha kind of dude, so I need to be the only dog in your house. But if you have me, you won’t need another dog!! I’m good with kids over about 8 as well (as long as they know how to treat a little dog!). I’m about 6 years old, crate trained, and housebroken.

Safeguards for Summer Some hot weather advice for keeping pets safe OUTDOOR BASICS Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so always keep fresh, clean water available. Make sure pets have a shady hangout and a place to retreat out of the sun. WARNING SIGNS Know the warning signs of overheating: excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, weakness, stupor or even collapse. Symptoms may also include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomit along with elevated body temperature. Animals with flat faces like Pugs and Persian cats are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. Elderly and overweight pets should also be kept as cool as possible. CAR CARE Never leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, even with the window left open, a car can quickly become a furnace. Also, leaving pets unattended in cars in extreme weather is illegal in several states. WATER WORKS Do not leave pets unsupervised around a body of water. Despite our notion that all dogs can “doggie paddle,” not all breeds are good swimmers. Make sure pets wear flotation devices

on boats, and rinse pets off after swimming in chlorinated water. Never let animals drink from chlorinated pool water as the chemicals can cause stomach upset. HAIR CARE Give dogs a new summer ‘do’ by shaving hair down to a oneinch length. Never shave down to the skin so that your dog still has some protection from the sun. Brushing your pet’s coat often can prevent problems caused by excessive heat. EXERCISE EXPOSURE Never over-exercise your pet on hot days. When the temperature is very high, limit your dog’s exposure to the hot asphalt. Your pet is much closer to the ground and their body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Save walks for the cooler part of the day.
FOURTH FUN Keep nosey pets far away from fireworks. Even used fireworks that have already been lit and exploded must be avoided as they contain toxic substances such as potassium nitrate, copper, chlorates, arsenic, and other heavy metals. Many dogs are sensitive to the loud popping of fireworks, so plan for a safe environment for your pet during the Fourth Photo courtesy of “I Can Has Cheezburger?” of July holiday.

Rudy
Zack
was born around 4-13-2009, Rudy is a striking solid black stumpy Manx. He’s a big boy, and solid, with the cutest little stumpy crooked bobtail. He loves to play with other cats and is very much a snuggler with people. He likes to crawl into my lap and lean into me to be petted. TV time in the Tailless Cat Rescue evenings is one of his favorite times to be a lap cat. He’s good with dogs as well. And who can resist those big back legs and little bobtail? He’d do best in a home with another pet for a playmate. Rudy is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, neutered, microchipped, and FeLV/FIV negative. His adoption fee is $90. Tailless Cat Rescue, specializing in Manx, but we also handle Japanese and American Bobtail and Pixie-bobs. Contact us at www.taillesscatrescue.com or email taillesscatrescue@hotmail.com.
is a male peke that is in need of a good home. Zack is approximately a year and a half old and he is best suited for a couple with older children and no other lap dogs inside. An older couple with no other inside dogs would be perfect also. Zack is very loving and enjoys being held in your lap. But, he does not tolerate other little dogs inside or small children. Miracles at Work Rescue Contact Gail Gentry at 336-294-2833 or 336-708-0343 for more information about Zack.

any pet owners have a misconception when it comes to their pet’s fur. Your pet’s hair is a natural insulator, it insulates your dog and cat from the cold as well as the heat. The coat also protects pets from the sun’s rays, so your shaved dog or cat can easily get sun burnt if out in the sun for long periods of time. If you still want to shave your pet there are some precautions you should take. Try to keep your pet out of the sun for more than an hour or two at a time for the first few days. There are some sun screen products on the market today that are made specifically for pets that work remarkably well. Have fun shopping around for the right one for your dog before you take him or her to the groomers for the cut.

If you choose not to shave your pet, a good bath and furmination can give amazing results. When your pet is freshly washed their skin has less oils and this can actually help to keep them cooler. If your
pet is a double coated breed then removing all that dead undercoat will thin out the hair which will also help to keep him or her feeling cooler in the summer time. A clean and thoroughly brushed pet will be a happy, healthy, cooler pet in the summer time heat. Whether you shave your pet or not please be sure they have some shade in the yard so they can get away from the blazing rays of the sun, and don’t forget that your pet will drink up to twice as much water on a hot day in order to stay hydrated, so always have a cool supply. One thing that works well is to dump a tray full of ice cubes into their outside water bowl in the morning and this will keep it cool for quite some time. Last but not least, have a wonderful summer and don’t forget to keep it cool.

Village Realty Exceptional Homes, Extraordinary Service on the Outer Banks North Carolina’s Outer Banks maintains a unique, small town charm because it preserves and ultimately blends its past with the present. Known for its flawless landscape that boasts worldfamous lighthouses, quiet beaches perfect for sport or relaxation, and prominent cultural and historical attractions like The Lost Colony, The Wright Brothers National Memorial and the North Carolina Aquarium, the Outer Banks has long been a fabulous vacation hotspot serving multiple generations of families. Once remote and difficult to reach, the area has experienced growth over the past three decades. A new, divided highway has improved access from the west. At the heart of this tourism boom is Village Realty, a family-owned, premier real estate company specializing in vacation rental homes, real estate sales, and association management throughout the Outer Banks. Ocracoke Island Realty, its partner company, manages more than 300 houses on Ocracoke Island. For more than 20 years, Village Realty has managed vacation homes, the property owners association, and offered homes for sale in The Village at Nags Head, the first planned golf and beach community on the Outer Banks. Village Realty has steadily expanded its presence throughout the Outer Banks, from the prestigious Currituck Club and surrounding communities of Corolla, to Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head, to the island of
Ocracoke, and west to the Inner Banks community of Columbia. Village Realty currently manages more than 500 vacation rental properties—second homes or investment properties that our guests enjoy as vacation homes year-round. “Since the area has continued to grow, businesses are responding by staying open all year. It’s a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of every day life,” explains Jackie Myers, vice president of Village Realty’s vacation rental division. Both vacation-goers and homeowners love the many property options afforded to them by Village Realty. “We manage a wide variety of properties—many pet-friendly, which enables us to cater to any size group and budget,” says Myers, explaining further that Village Realty can cater to large family reunions, destination weddings and the typical four-person family. “We manage palatial oceanfronts, two- to three-bedroom oceanfront condos, beach boxes on stilts, lovely homes blocks from the beach, and soundside estates on the golf course.” Vacation-goers who rent houses through Village Realty also enjoy the convenience of in-house linens and a 24/7 maintenance service. “We stress customer service,” continues Myers. “It’s the number one goal in everything we do.” Visit www.VillageVacationsOBX.com or call 800-548-9688 to plan your Outer Banks vacation. A.B. Seed & Co. Beware of the Killer Cats
M
- by Amber Coble
ost people that shop at A.B. Seed & Co. are aware of the “Beware of the Killer Cats” signs that are located at different entrances throughout the store. It is very amusing to read, but even more amusing when you walk into our store and see one of the so called Killers named Spooky, snoozing away at the counter, or walk out back and be greeted by Sundance, the oldest of four. It is nearly impossible to have a customer walk in through the front door and not be greeted by our giant white fur ball. You might even try walking out the back door without petting Sundance, but we assure you he will follow you around, meowing until you do!
The store itself has an original feel to it that will leave you wanting to come back again and again, and the cats add to the originality. A.B. Seed has seen and taken in its fair share of feline friends, thanks to the owner, Mark Abee, who has never turned one down. We all find it extremely important to give stray cats around the market a place that they can call home. We can not express how wonderful it is to have our feline friends at the store. Our customers would agree. At least once a day we hear, “Where are the cats?” Come visit A.B. Seed for a unique shopping experience. And don’t forget. . . beware of the Killer Cats.

Fishers Grille and The Corner Slice Offer Great Food, Beverages and Atmosphere Doug Jones, owner of Fishers Grille, 608 North Elm Street, has recently opened a new restaurant which is right next door. The Corner Slice located at 600 North Elm Street in Greensboro offers a wide variety of pizzas, subs and salads. The pizzas are cleverly named after nearby streets such as Isabel with Ranch dressing, bacon and roasted chicken; Magnolia served with white sauce, spinach, chicken and feta; South Park which includes ham, pineapple and cheese; and the offering vegetables of your choice. Besides 14 different beers on tap, the Corner Slice serves crab dip, potato skins and garlic knots, just to name a few. There are four wide-screened televisions for sports entertainment and outdoor seating is available. Hours at the Corner Slice are 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Sunday. Jones has been in the restaurant business since 1971 and bought Fishers Grille in 1993. Fishers is a relaxing neighborhood restaurant and bar located in downtown Greensboro. Fishers serves a tasty selection of Cajun, Dixie, and California burgers and chicken; sandwiches and subs featuring French dips, tuna, Reuben, and Sicilian; and freshly made house, taco, and Greek salads. Fishers boasts a sports theme, and blues bands are featured every Tuesday starting at 9:00 p.m. Hours of operation are 11:00 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday. Their Sunday hours are from noon until 10:00 p.m. Fishers held a doggie birthday party for a regular customer’s dog in May on the patio. Huge bowls of ice water scattered about the patio plus plates of multicolored doggie treats made it a big hit. Balloons, banners and all types of decorations added to the festivities. Some of the Mikky, Freckles and Misty party-going canines were recently celebrated Freckle’s dressed in little sweaters birthday party at Fishers. and some sported bandanas, and some just wore pretty clips in their hair to keep it out of their eyes. Great fun, good food, and wet doggie kisses were shared by all at. Aside from owning two restaurants, Doug Jones finds the time to put together a fund raiser every year for man’s best friend. His two labs accompany him to work most mornings. He enjoys their company so much, he decided having two pet friendly patios would just enhance both his businesses. And guess what? It really does!
