Vet’s Corner Dr. Magnotta is originally from Connecticut, but has called North Carolina her home for the past few years. She completed her veterinary degree at Oklahoma State University in 2012 and has been in private practice since graduation. Her interests include senior care, dermatology, and pain management. She loves hiking, traveling, spending time with her family, Melissa Magnotta, DVM and volunteering in the Brassfield Animal Hospital community. Dr. Magnotta recently joined the team at Brassfield Animal Hospital and is excited to help you provide the best care for your pets!

SENIOR PETS We wish it were only the grey hairs when it comes to aging! Similar to the elderly, our pets experience issues that are seen more commonly with age: achy joints, senility, and major organ dysfunction to name a few. Veterinary medicine has come a long way in being able to provide care for senior pets and it is our responsibility as pet owners to provide them with the best care into their golden years. Many senior animals have arthritis in one or more joints. Hesitating to jump on furniture, struggling to stand, and moving slower are signs that your pet may have some joint discomfort. Make sure your home is senior pet friendly and safe, so that normal daily routines aren’t a challenge. Even pools and stairs can pose a danger to an older, unsteady animal. There are a number of products that can help you provide the best care, including ramps, orthopedic bedding, slings, raised food bowls, and carpet runners. Here at Brassfield Animal Hospital we are well-equipped to help ease those achy joints by utilizing cold laser therapy, acupuncture, and

medication. We can also use prescription diets that contain fatty acids, glucosamine, and antioxidants to promote joint health. Don’t forget that added weight makes getting around even harder! Cats with damaged and weakened muscles may not want to stretch back to groom themselves or use a scratching post to keep their nails trimmed. Sadly, we see too many older pets with matted coats and nails grown into their pads. Help them out! If they won’t let you, we can help! If your older pet has not seen their doctor in the last year, schedule an appointment! Do that blood work your veterinarian has recommended! Age is not a disease, but we tend to see certain ailments more often as animals age. Pay attention to changes in water consumption, appetite, urination, defecation, and activity level. Your observations at home help us with a diagnosis. We recommend semi-annual exams and at least annual blood work, so we can be proactive about your pet’s health! Kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, and hypothyroidism are just a few diseases that we can detect on blood work. Your veterinarian may suggest a diet change, medication, and/or further diagnostics. Knowing that our pets have similar health complications, we should not be surprised when we see signs of dementia or cognitive dysfunction in aging cats and dogs. Cognitive dysfunction is similar to Alzheimer’s disease in people. Barking, difficulty sleeping throughout the night, restlessness, aggression, pacing, confusion, and house-soiling are signs of senility. Be patient with your pet and let your veterinarian know you’ve picked up on these cues. We can start your pet on a diet with antioxidants and fatty acids, supplements, and sometimes we may consider a medication to help nerves communicate better. Introducing new toys, food puzzles, and exercise can help improve and delay cognitive dysfunction. Over a year ago, my dad called upset about his 12 year old Labrador Retriever, Leeber. Leeber stopped jumping on the couch, slipped easily when walking, and would fall over when going to the bathroom. My dad thought it was time. Not only did Leeber demonstrate signs of arthritis, but he would bark all night and repeatedly get up and down, unable to relax. After radiographs and blood work, we decided to be aggressive with pain management for arthritis and treatment for cognitive dysfunction. Fast forward a year later, Leeber has more good days than bad days. He takes two pain medications and multiple supplements a day. He is sometimes caught attacking snowmen in the yard, attempting to jump over the fence, and scavenging the floors for food, leaving both father and veterinarian grateful. Keep a close eye on your senior pet’s health and help him get the most out of his golden years.

ong before the 1955 classic “Lady & the Tramp” when Nutsy took his iconic “long walk” and Lady watched him go down the hall to never return, Animal Shelters were considered pounds and Animal Control Officers were considered dog catchers. The name fit these facilities well, as stray dogs and cats were a nuisance and rarely made it out of the pound without some type of license. Today animal sheltering has evolved past the “long walk” for dogs and cats and now provides hope for animals that are seized and surrendered to their local animal shelter. Animal Shelters provide warmth, shelter, quality food and compassionate employees that truly care for the animals. They offer adoptions, work with rescue partners, provide community outreach and educate on responsible pet ownership. A little over five years ago Rockingham County had a tiny “pound” behind a veterinarian office. With considerable effort and county and community support, Rockingham County Animal Shelter was built; a facility that is 10,000 square feet offering comfortable indoor kennels for dogs of all sizes and condos for the cats living here. The Rockingham County Animal Shelter has an adoption area located inside the shelter offering dog and cat adoptions for a minimal fee. Every adoption includes the pet’s spay or neuter surgery, microchip and updated age-appropriate vaccinations. Through donations we are able to offer cat adoptions for only $15. Dog adoptions start at $75 and puppies are available for $110, but through many generous sponsorships from supporters of the animal shelter, these prices can be even lower on the dogs donors choose to sponsor. The Rockingham County Animal Shelter provides many outlets where animals can be viewed including the Animal Shelter website, Facebook, a local pet store, Petfinder, Pet Tango and Triad Happy Tails Magazine each

month. Being able to adopt an animal from a shelter gives each animal adopted a new start at life in a loving home as a pet and a member of the family. For many adult animals that come through the shelter this is a second chance at life. Another way animals leave the shelter is through owner reclaims. Owners come through the shelter every day in hopes of finding their beloved family pet. Licensing with the pet’s name, owner’s name and phone number help reunite many animals with their family quickly, resulting in a short stay at the shelter. What happens, though, when their collar is lost during their adventures outside of their home? Microchips are an amazing way to get lost animals home. Once implanted underneath the fur the owner’s and pet’s information are registered. When your pet comes into the animal shelter and is scanned, his/her identification can be easily found even without a collar. We have had the opportunity to reunite many pets with their owners and this doesn’t just pertain to pets that have been lost for a couple days; some of the animals that have come through the shelter doors have been lost for several months to several years. These owners, some that had given up all hope of finding their lost family member, are shocked, surprised and overcome with many feelings of happiness and gratitude that they will soon be reunited with a long lost member of their family when they receive that phone call saying their pet is at the shelter. While we love seeing animals adopted or reunited with their owners, there is another way out of the shelter for these animals. Rescue partners have been a big resource that the shelter utilizes. Rescue groups come in all shapes and sizes; from breed specific groups, cat or dog only organizations, to all breed rescues. These partnerships not only help healthy, happy animals but animals that are in need of medical attention that our shelter cannot offer. We have had the

opportunity to work alongside the Humane Society of the United States for a large scale seizure with more animals than the shelter was able to hold, especially since we already had numerous animals that already resided here. The Humane Society of Charlotte stepped forward to help thirteen dogs that were living in deplorable conditions causing many of the animals to need around the clock supportive care and experienced fosters to care for them until they were well enough to be adopted. Many breed specific groups have been wonderful partners when the shelter has received less than desirable pure breeds that are being overlooked for adoption because of their age or current health status. Martinsville-Henry County SPCA has become a frequent visitor to the shelter, transferring many animals into their care from every age, size and breed. The shelter is not only the beginning of a new life; it is also the beginning of an amazing adventure for the animals and people alike. So far we have transferred animals as far south as Florida, as far west as Texas and even as far north as Canada. Sheltering has come a long way from the “long walk” and the Rockingham County Animal Shelter has come a long way from just a “pound.” We give hope and shelter for all those in need. We encourage you to come by our facility and visit with the animals, meet the staff members who tirelessly care for these animals every day and participate in our low cost spay/neuter clinics and our vaccine clinics.

Vet’s Corner Jessica Taylor, DVM - Guilford-Jamestown Veterinary Hospital Doctor Taylor grew up in Georgia, but has called North Carolina home since 1998. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from North Carolina State University in 2000, and she received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. As member of Guilford-Jamestown Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Taylor strives to help owners strengthen the bond with their pets through preventative care and education. She has special interests in cardiology, pain and arthritis management and endocrine diseases such as diabetes. Top 5 Things You Don’t Want to Tell Your Vet (but Should!) 1. You forgot to give the heartworm pill…again! Life gets busy- we understand! When you come in and tell us you still have pills at home, we already know that the math doesn’t add up. We can see when you last purchased it. But, please, don’t be afraid to tell us here is why we need to know! • We can tell you if you are still in the safe zone - a few days late may not be a big deal • If you have missed a few doses, your pet may be at risk - even a few months down the road after missing the pill. There is a small window where the heartworm pills will kill the immature heartworms. If we miss this, the larva can mature and turn in to adult heartworms. It can take up to six months for a positive result to show up! If we don’t detect them early, damage can occur to the heart and lungs and can make your dog very sick. Let us know when the last missed dose happened, and we can develop a plan to ensure your pet is safe. • Missing a dose or three during the winter shouldn’t be a big deal, right? Remember Christmas Day 2015? It was over 70 degrees and sunny. Mosquitoes can be present all year in our climate, so we need to be vigilant all year! Plus, many preventions protect against more than heartworms (fleas, intestinal parasites). • Your veterinarian may have other choices!!! There are injectable products for those of us who forget. There are topical options for pets who are geniuses at spitting out a pill. Ask us - we will help you come up with a plan! 2. Your pet ate something…but you can’t (won’t) tell us what. If your pet isn’t acting well, we need to know all the details. Unfortunately, they are really bad at filling us in, so we rely on you. Even though your vet has told you before not to give people food, we need to know that Fido got a ham hock. Or that Fluffy may have scarfed a pill off of the floor. We really want to help your pet feel better as quickly as possible, so we won’t and don’t have time to judge you about what is in your house. Having an idea of what they ate can direct what tests we need to perform and how to start treatment.

3. Your cat goes outside. Indoor kitties tend to live longer and have lower risk for infectious disease. But some felines just have the urge to get outside! If your cat started as an indoor only pet but has transitioned to spending time outside, we need to know. Vaccines for Feline Leukemia are very important in preventing this communicable and life threatening disease! However, most indoor only cats don’t need this vaccine due to low risk. Also, no one wants fleas in their house, but the outdoor world is a great place for your mouser to pick them up. We can talk about ways to ensure everyone is safe and sane! 4. You already gave your pet some OTC medicine at home. When you bring your pet in for a problem, it often has been going on for more than a day and isn’t getting better on its own. The veterinary nurse will ask if Fido is on any medication, and almost all owners say, “No”. Then the doctor comes in and asks again if you have given Fido anything for the problem. It sometimes takes asking three or four different ways before we discover that an owner gave a pill, supplement, aspirin or even some of their own medication. This is very important for us to know! Pets do not metabolize medication the same way as people, and many seemingly harmless doses can be toxic to pets. It can also significantly change what medications we can prescribe going forward. Tell the staff everything, no matter how small, that you have put in, or on your pet! 5. You have a budget. We understand that unexpected costs can upset our budget, and sometimes our pets pick the worst time to get sick! Veterinary medicine is amazing in that we have many wonderful tests to investigate and diagnose problems. Your veterinarian will recommend the best course of action to get to answers quickly. However, if you know you have a certain amount available, please let us know. There are special medical credit lines and alternative plans that we can discuss with you to make sure your pet receives the best care possible. Having an open dialogue will make sure everyone is on the same page! Your veterinarian is your pets’ family doctor, and we rely on you, the owner to be their advocate! Being open and honest about your pet and their environment will ensure that your life together will be as long and healthy as possible. Be an Advocate for Your Dog By Brad Howell, Red Beard Dog Training

og ownership is a great experience. Despite all we provide (food, shelter, veterinary care, etc.) the return we receive is much greater! Our dogs shower us with unconditional love and provide us with material for goofy videos to post on social media. They snuggle up to us when we’re sad and never pass judgment on all the horrible mistakes we make as humans. Despite all of the emotional support our dogs provide, we have to remember that their needs are much different than our own. There are a lot of opinions on what is the best way to train or raise our dogs. There is no right answer and every dog is different. But advocating for them — even sometimes at the expense of people’s feelings —is paramount to their success.

a dog’s needs. We all know that super sweet Golden Retriever down the street that is the perfect dog, but that’s just not reality. Television is also bad about portraying every dog as a teddy bear with no special boundaries. Children are easily influenced and they like watching TV. Which leads me to my next point…

Structure is a good thing

Dogs and kids are a great combination with the right supervision. However, when their interactions aren’t monitored, it can — at best— be extremely unfair to the dog, and — at worst — very dangerous. Just because the dog tolerates kids pulling on their ears, giving them bear hugs and riding them like horses doesn’t make it right to do. Kids are bitten more than any demographic of people and often times it is on the face. This is a clear violation of the dog’s space and is easily avoidable in most cases. If your dog is acting uncomfortable or showing even clearer warning signs (growling, snarling) do not punish the dog for giving a clear warning. Remove your children from the situation and be vigilant about their requirement to respect the dog’s space. Learning what your own dog is comfortable with around your own children is much easier to determine than your kids with other dogs. If in public, always ask the owner for permission to approach and pet. Even if they grant the permission, pay attention to the dog’s body language. If they do everything they can to avoid the interaction, it is best to leave them alone. A fearful dog will typically get all the space it can, but once they are at the end of their leash it can put them in a very tough spot. People have the best of intentions when it comes to interacting with our dogs, but the best intentions don’t always make for the best results. We already shower them with love and give them great homes, but we don’t have to stop there…be an advocate for your dog.

Even the most basic training is essential. Most dogs are begging for your leadership. They don’t want to shoulder the burden of being in charge. Learning to leash walk is arguably the most important task to learn. You must use a leash at all times in most cities and you will be more likely to walk your dog more the better it behaves on-leash. Asking your dog to complete simple commands before getting a nice scratch on the head or a treat is also a good habit. They don’t require world-class training to have solid structure. Crates are not cruel and are life-savers in many cases. Get your dog comfortable in a crate! Even dogs that do not stress out in the house and are not destructive should be comfortable in a crate in case they ever travel or are required to be confined to recover from an injury/surgery.

Don’t be afraid to say “no” Socialization is important for dogs and can mean a lot of things… it all depends on the dog. Sometimes that can mean playing off-leash at the dog park or politely taking treats from humans. Other times, it means just being able to walk in the presence of other people and/or dogs without having a meltdown. I was recently working in a store to help a client’s very nervous German Shepherd with some socialization. The dog was very fearful but was gaining some confidence after a few minutes of uninterrupted socialization. She watched the employees and customers go about their business and became more and more comfortable the longer people ignored her. This was huge progress. Just as we were about to leave a lady began making a beeline to us from the far end of the store. My dog immediately began to get nervous. Seeing that she was clearly coming to us without hesitation, I told the lady to please give us some room and that she could not pet the dog because it was very nervous. The lady looked at me like I was crazy and continued to approach. My dog began to bark loudly as she stared directly at it and spoke in a baby voice telling it everything was OK. I backed away and told her more firmly to stop or the dog would bite her. She left in a huff, but an angry person is better than a bit person. Just as importantly, I’m glad she ultimately didn’t further the shepherd’s distrust of people any more than she already did. The lady meant well, but it’s a classic example of misunderstanding

Nemo appears to have very little training and is very nervous when approached. He and his pasture mates were abandoned by their owner and were taken in by animal control so we do not know his history. He is very sweet and with patience and time we believe would be a great pony! sweet 8 year old female Boer goat. She has been well cared for and loved by her owner. Sadly, her owner’s circumstances changed and they could no longer keep her. - Hear me roar... This little fella was found by an employee of the North Carolina Zoo. We think he was looking for his family and thought the lions might make a nice pride. Tiger

Jethro

is a one-yearold Boxer mix that is one handsome boy. He is about 73 pounds and is appropriately named as he has beautiful, golden honey fur with black brindle stripes which makes his coat resemble that of a Tiger. He is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. Tiger is smart, curious and does well with most other dogs. As one of our kennel staff said, he is the perfect mix between relaxed and playful. Although Tiger is sweet and loving, Tiger is also big and strong and needs someone capable of handling his strength and size. He would do well with training and needs regular exercise.

We often hear him playing with one of his favorite toys, which is his food bowl. After he eats he likes to flip his bowl over and play with it like it’s a hockey puck. Marmalade

is a bit shy, but has really started to blossom. This gorgeous one year old Lab/Chow mix with beautiful long fur gets along with other dogs and is very loving. She walks well on a leash and knows basic commands. Velvet also likes to play and enjoys her chew toys. She is gentle, friendly and once she trusts you, she is quick to roll over and ask for belly rubs. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. All she needs now is someone that can continue to help her blossom and who will provide a stable, loving home. The best fit for her would be a calm and relaxed home with no small children. was pulled, within hours of being put down at a local shelter, by the good people of Feline Friends. His foster mom believes someone continuously played rough with him or possibly worse—abused. Sampson needed to see she would be constantly nice to him to help him realize his attitude needed an overhaul. He has infrequent lapses but they are closer to ‘love nibbles’ these days. He would probably do best in a one cat household as he likes to know he is ‘Alpha Cat’.

was found in an abandoned home with another dog who is also safe with Merit Pit Bull Foundation. She had no hair when she was brought into Merit’s care, but has really blossomed in her foster home. My name is Panda and I was born around January 2014. I was abandoned in a parking lot when my owners found out I was pregnant. A nice man saw me, picked me up, and took me to AARF. is a thoughtful, affectionate kitty, born around March 2016. His foster mom thinks he’s going to be a “look before he leaps” kind of cat, but once he’s in the game, he’s in it to win it and he loves to play with his litter mates! When Pickle was six weeks old, he showed up on his foster mother’s porch with his mother and three litter mates, and moved into the house three days later. He’s been in foster care ever since. Gypsy, her brother and her sister were rescued from a shelter when their owner lost her home and gave up all her cats. Gypsy is a stumpy Manx, born about November 2010. She’s a sweet girl who adores being petted. She is used to living in a multi cat household and does very well with other cats. She’s the first to give head butts, and rub her face Tailless Cat Rescue against yours. She loves to chase a fishing pole toy. Rita is a 10 lb., 3 year old house-trained, crate-trained, dog-friendly Chiweenie. She was found as a stray by the shelter and no one ever claimed her. Rita did suffer from an injured back and was unable to walk for a while, but through rest and medication, she now runs and plays with everyone in her foster family. his is our little foster Pug named Harley, but we fondly call her Lady Bear or Sugar Bear. She’s an 11-year-old Pug who, due to lack of care from her former owners, could not walk when she came to our rescue in November of 2015. However, she has made a great recovery ever since she has been with the rescue and she has begun to pick herself up and walk a bit, but not very well, due to a disc problem in her spine. Losing a lot weight has increased her mobility tremendously, even with her current disabilities, she is a ball of energy and she can run and play with the rest of our Pugs just fine. Harley has become somewhat attached to our young paunchy Pug, Copper, and she chases him around the house. She loves getting neck and back scratches from her foster family and will give anyone that walks through the door a big, “barooooo” with a bubbly, cute, playful bark. She is such a cute sweetheart and her life would have been different had her former owners not surrendered Harley to the rescue. She tends to drag her back legs around mostly, but for the most part, she can get around just fine. Harley may need a wheelchair in the future. Do to her back issue, she has no control over her pooping and peeing and will need to wear diapers for the rest of her life. However, if carried outside, she only needs a little bit of help and a boost then she can use the bathroom outdoors. Harley’s owners (had her since she was a puppy), wanted to give her up because their jobs were too demanding, had a 10-month-old and another baby on the way. All suggested that she was not being walked like she should have, so they decided that they couldn’t “take care of ” her anymore. We are unsure of what all of her damages are, due to lack of consistency in records. We think that she could have a degenerative disc disease, Hip Dysplasia, or a combination of both. She’s up-to-date on routine shots, spayed, heartworm negative.
