Congratulations!

Guilford County Animal Shelter’s first Clear the Shelters Day was a huge success. At present, over 140 animals were adopted this past Saturday, July 23. The organizers of this event deserve a heartfelt, “Thanks” from our community. Let’s hope this, along with the other changes at the Guilford County Animal Shelter, will mark a new and better day for our shelter.

Vet’s Corner After receiving her doctorate of veterinary medicine from NC State University, Dr. Amy Randall practiced general veterinary medicine for a year in Fredericksburg, VA. She then completed a two-year internship in veterinary medicine and Amy J. Randall, DVM, MS, surgery at Mississippi Diplomate, ACVD State University. Dr. Randall performed her residency at The Ohio State University and earned a masters degree. She is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. Dr. Randall has a practice in Portland, Oregon called Animal Allergy and Ear Clinic and currently travels to North Carolina to see patients one week out of the month. She is currently seeing patients out of Happy Tails Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Greensboro.

Benefits of Surgical CO2 Laser in Veterinary Dermatology The lasers in use for medical purposes are referred to as light lasers. These lasers emit a beam of radiation that is visible to the human eye. The CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser has proven to be an excellent choice for laser surgery and is the primary laser used in veterinary dermatology. The CO2 laser beam is absorbed by water. Because water is the main component of all living cells, the CO2 laser beam is absorbed efficiently with minimal thermal scattering and damage to surrounding tissues. Cells in tissue exposed to the high intensity beam of the CO2 laser are disintegrated by vaporization.

Advantages to Using CO2 Lasers There are several advantages to using this type of laser over conventional scalpel surgery. Lasers reduce the amount of bleeding. They effectively seal very small blood vessels, reducing the pain associated with the procedures by sealing nerve endings. Therefore, many of the procedures do not require general anesthesia. I have been able to remove many skin tags, masses and skin cancer with local anesthesia and mild - moderate sedation. This allows us to provide treatment options for clients with very old animals who are anesthetic risks. Many of the laser procedures do not need to be sutured. The pet does not need suture removal and sometimes this also decreases the need for ecollars which some animals do not tolerate.

CO2 Laser Can Be Used for the Following Dermatologic Conditions CO2 laser surgery has enabled me to treat the following conditions effectively and successfully. In many cases, laser surgery is easier, more effective, and less harmful to the animal. In some cases, laser treatment is the only method to achieve adequate results. Viral Papillomas Papillomas, which are more common in dogs, are due to a virus that causes wart type growths in the mouth, on the footpads or in between the toes. They are very painful and can be very challenging to resolve if they do not resolve spontaneously. The warts can grow in size very

rapidly and spread very quickly in the mouth. Here are a few pictures of papillomas in dogs. Laser surgery is very successful on the feet. In the oral cavity laser surgery, in conjunction with interferon, is very successful in resolving this condition.

Canine Pigmented Viral Plaques

Papilloma Virus

In dogs, these plaques start out as very small, darkly pigmented spots (most appear black) which are usually seen on the belly, chest, back or ears. They will usually enlarge over time and become more numerous. When noticed and evaluated closely, they are slightly raised and rough to the touch. They vary in size from 2mm to 1 to 2cm. They are more common in Miniature Schnauzers and Pugs, but can be seen in any breed. They are associated with a papilloma virus and there is concern they could transform into a type of cancer called carcinoma. Removal is recommended. Squamous Cell Carcinoma Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) most commonly occur in sun-exposed areas. In cats, they present on the nose, ears, or face, whereas they are most commonly located on the ventrum in dogs. Other locations include the mouth and nail beds. In the early stage of SCC it appears like a small Squamous Cell brown pigmented spot on the skin or nose. Carcinoma This will usually become a scab which never heals. It then progresses to an ulcerated bleeding lesion which spreads and becomes larger. CO2 laser can be very successful in removing SCC when it has been identified early and the cancer has not gone deep into the tissue and is not involving the entire nose. Pinnal (Ear Flap) Tumors These types of tumors/growths on the ear can be difficult to remove with conventional surgical excision without causing disfiguration of the pinnae. There is usually excessive bleeding which requires sutures for control. When the tumor is removed via scalpel blade, surrounding normal skin and structures are often removed also causing excessive deformities in the ear. The CO2 laser allows tumor removal without the need for sutures and usually avoids damage to surrounding normal Pinnal Growth ear tissue. Therefore, there is less scar formation and minimal deformity to the ear, as well as less discomfort to the patient post surgery. Other easily removable masses from the skin include skin tags, sebaceous adenomas, cysts between the toes (due Sebaceous Adenoma Cyst-like Mass to hair follicle rupture). The Animal Allergy and Ear Clinic offers this treatment option as an alternative to conventional surgery for selected cases.

Cover Story

Forsyth Humane Society:

Adopt. Educate. Love. By Sarah Williamson, Executive Director.

F

orsyth Humane Society has been working hard over the last 75 years to make a difference in the lives of the homeless cats and dogs in Forsyth County. We remain committed to that goal, we want to grow our impact and our new home will enhance our ability to do just that. In 2003, our Forsyth Humane Society’s tag line became “Adopt. Educate. Love.” and we are excited to see how all these areas will grow with our August move.

Adopt.

The layout of the new facility places cats and dogs on opposite sides of the building, rather than on top of each other, which has been the case at Miller Street. This alone will decrease the stress level of our cats. Furthermore, the cat porch, additional cat colony room, use of glass rather than grates to separate cats from the public, and increased sunlight should result in some very content cats. Our dogs will have larger runs, bigger play

areas, and grass to frolic in to create a comfortable dog rather than a stressed dog. Creating this more relaxing environment for our dogs and cats will improve their health and help them present better when people come out to adopt them. Overall, we expect our number of adoptions to increase due to the improved facility layout, as well as our continuous adoption process improvements, implementation of new technology, and investment in Adoption Counselors who will work to match the right pet with each family. While we will be able to house additional animals, our focus is to decrease the length of stay for any one animal.

Balto

Educate.

The addition of a Community Room to our new home will allow us to expand our educational programming. We will be opening our doors to schools, scouts, and birthday parties, all of which will include educational programming focused on how to be safe

Photos from inside and outside our new facility at 4881 Country Club Road.

Sailor around dogs that are not part of our families and pet care. In the winter we plan to offer informational programming that will be of interest to adults. We will cover topics not only related to cats and dogs, but material covering compassion towards all animals. It is only through sharing knowledge with our community that impactful changes can happen. We will continue to look for ways to expand our spay/neuter programming to assist in relieving the cat and dog overpopulation concerns in Forsyth County. We will continue going to schools and community events to answer questions and share what we know about pet care. We will grow our partnerships with groups like UNchain Winston, who promotes the importance of unchaining of dogs. We will become a true resource on which our community can rely.

Pepe Balto and Pepe were adopted in July, but we have many more wonderful cats and dogs available, including Sailor. Please call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303 if you would like to meet Sailor or any of our other adoptable pets.

Love.

We do all of this out of love, not only for the cats and dogs, but for our community as well. We are thrilled that we will be able to open our doors to anybody. Miller Street was not accessible for everyone, but our new facility will be. Senior Centers, Assisted Living or similar organizations will be able to bring visitors to sit on the cat porch and pet a cat or sit outside and watch a dog in the dog park. This is a very healing experience for the elderly. We will be able to expand our Outreach Programming into the community. We have already taken steps by expanding our Pet Food Pantry through partners throughout Forsyth County. This simple helping hand helps keep dogs and cats out of the shelter system and in their homes by providing pet food, which is a financial relief for their families. You are welcome to stop in to visit us in our new home starting August 23. As we continue to grow our programs we will continue to look at impact. We are determined more than ever to become intertwined with our community and truly make a lasting difference.

Come visit us

at our new home starting August 23 at 4881 Country Club Road in Winston-Salem. Call 336-721-1303 for directions and hours. Photos of Balto, Sailor and Pepe are courtesy of Steph Skardal Photography. www.triadhappytails.com August 2016

Hope is a four year old 13 lb. female Jack Russell Terrier who was found abandoned with very large mammary glands, and had surgery to remove two hernias. She is heartworm negative, up-to-date on vaccinations, de-wormed and on heartworm/flea/tick preventative. She is a very sweet little girl who loves people, kids and dogs, but has not been tested with cats yet. Hope is very active, so a home that understands the nature of a Jack Russell is a must! She’ll need patience with house-training as we believe she was probably an outside dog. Call Spay Stokes at 336-971-2963 or email arsc2004@gmail.com for more information on adopting Hope. n

Natural Pet Store Now Open in Oak Ridge You may have noticed the “Healthy Pet Food Arriving Soon” signs at Oak Ridge Commons Shopping Center, next to Lowes Foods. The signs are gone and healthy pet food is now available in Oak Ridge! Owner Phil Ray says Best 4K9 is a “natural pet store dedicated to providing pets with the highest quality food, treats, toys and grooming items available.” This is the second location for Best 4K9, both owned by Ray, a Greensboro resident. The first store is located in Gunter’s Crossing Shopping Center at the corner of N. Church St. and Hwy. 150 in northern Greensboro, Best 4K9, home of just outside of Summerfield. Sidecar Cash Phil is passionate about pets and nutrition, focusing on the health and well-being of our four-legged family members, including cats and dogs. He gets behind his products and only sells items that he believes in using for his own pets, Cash and Cami. Phil once said, “If dogs could drive and read, they would definitely come shop at Best 4K9 because they would like what they see.” The folks at Best 4K9 would love the opportunity to discuss your pet’s individual needs and get them started on the right path to a healthier life. Come check out the new store and the best of everything dog...and cat too!

He received his certification as a rehabilitation therapist from the Canine Rehab Glenn Huth, DVM, CCRT Institute in Denver, Colorado. OBESITY IN DOGS It’s the Dog Days of Summer, and a lot of us are sweating about being in a swimsuit after indulging in a few too many Summer BBQs. But what about our pets? Have we thought about how they are feeling as they try to cool themselves with those extra pounds on? A few quick facts: Obesity is the number one cause of nutritional and endocrine health problems in our pets. Veterinarians estimate that a staggering 40% of pets in the United States are either overweight or obese. Obesity can contribute to a variety of serious medical conditions such as: Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture, Intervertebral Disc Disease, Osteoarthritis, Endocrine Diseases (diabetes, pancreatitis, thyroid diseases), Heart Disease, Respiratory Problems and DECREASED LIFE SPAN. A recent Purina Life Study estimated a decrease in life span by two years in pets with obesity.

Signs of Obesity The signs of obesity can be subtle, especially to owners who see their dogs all of the time and do not notice gradual changes in their pets’ weight. It is even more difficult to identify in long-haired breeds. The most common way of assessing weight in an animal is by “look and feel.” Veterinarians will refer to it as a body condition score or “BCS.” For basic learning purposes, dogs are considered a good weight if their ribs are easy to feel as individual, solid structures without using very much finger pressure, and if their chest, abdomen and hips form a well-defined waist-like hour glass shape when viewed from above. A guideline for signs of obesity include: a “waddling” gait (rolling from side to side when moving), lethargy, exercise intolerance, difficulty breathing-effort with walking, or noisy breathing (stridor, wheezing, huffing). Because these signs can be associated with conditions other than just obesity, it is important to have a veterinarian examine your pet before beginning a weight loss program. This way, any underlying

causes for a weight problem can be explored (for example, if the dog has a thyroid problem, you may be unsuccessful in weight loss efforts). Even a moderate amount of excess body fat can reduce a dog’s life span. This is why it is so important to maintain a pet’s optimal body weight as best as you can. We all want our pets to lead long, happy lives. The earlier age we start this process, the easier it is to maintain, but it is NEVER too late to start a weight loss program.

Causes of Obesity Basically, obesity is caused by eating too many calories (excess energy intake), by not getting enough exercise (deficient energy output) or some combination of the two. Extra energy from a a dog’s diet is stored as fat. Factors that can contribute to a dog eating too many calories include being fed table scraps, snacks and other treats between meals, being fed energy-dense, high fat highly palatable commercial diets, or simply being fed too much of a well-balanced diet. Other factors include age, breed, sex, heredity, hormonal abnormalities and lifestyle. Dogs that are not given regular exercise can become overweight even when they are given an appropriate amount of food. IS YOUR PET A COUCH POTATO? Does he sit around while you are at work all day long? Older pets, and those that are spayed or neutered, frequently become less active and become predisposed to putting on weight. Aging dogs usually live an increasingly confined and sedentary lifestyle. And it’s the use it or lose it principal. An animal moves less, starts to weigh more and may become stiff. This makes them less inclined to move and the vicious cycle ensues. Statistically, dogs that live with overweight owners are also more likely to become overweight. Finally, certain breeds are more commonly affected with obesity—Beagles, Labrador Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels and Dachshunds, just to name a few.

Managing Obesity So what do we do with all of this and how can we keep our babies from fighting the battle of the bulge? Certainly, the best way to manage obesity is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Overfeeding puppies may lead to excess production of fat cells and a tendency to become overweight later in life and also accelerating growth rates that risk skeletal diseases. Get a good feeding program from your veterinarian and follow it, being sure to understand when to transition from puppy food to adult food. Mature companion dogs should be given at least one to two brisk walks a day. Another great form of exercise is swimming. Any exercise should be progressed gradually, paying close attention to fatigue level and tolerance. Build a little more into your pet’s exercise routine each week. In addition, a diet that is formulated for your pet’s activity level is important and should include a very minimal number of commercial treats. Instead, substitute green beans, cooked sweet potato, baby carrots or even broccoli. Experiment The Only Facility Of Its Kind In NC! with your pet’s veggie tastes, you will be surprised, especially if you start young! Honestly, animals are less aware of the quantity of food they are given and more in tune to routine. Don’t change the feeding schedule, change the total calories consumed daily. Your family friend will be on (336) 446-8071 their way to a slimmer, happier See ad on page 16. lifestyle and will feel great! www.triadhappytails.com August 2016

Training Your Pet

How to Handle a Shy, Scared Dog By Megan MacKenzie, Moms 4 Paws

M

ost of us have been there. You notice your dog is hesitant about a certain object, event, person or location. She gives you those big puppy dog eyes as she (or he) pauses. How do you handle the situation? Think about it, as the best approach might be completely different from what you would guess. The majority of us automatically go into comforting mode; sweet talking, petting, and in some cases even picking up the dog to help get past the issue. If this description sounds similar to what you do, please read on, as that is NOT the answer! I’ve seen it hundreds of times, and it leads to a more timid dog that has the potential to lead to bigger issues such as fear aggression in the long run. What is the answer, you ask? When you look at the scenario from the dog’s perspective, you’ll understand. For example, let’s say you’re taking Resette to the vet (Resette is the name of my dog who I had this very issue with when she was rescued) and the veterinarian needs to get her current weight. For her, the scale is an unidentified foreign object. A UFO, if you will. It is intimidating, and you’re pulling her towards it. Not only that, but you’re trying to get her on the platform. When she hesitates, you pet her and tell her in a soothing voice that it’s okay and it won’t hurt her. In a dog’s mind, this is rewarding her hesitant behavior. She gets the impression that she has every right to be scared because of how you’re reacting to her behavior. If this happens over and over again, the issue can lead to a bigger ordeal. The scale at the vet’s office is just one situation, but how you respond will be similar, regardless of the trigger. The best way to approach this, along with other similar situations with a timid, scared or shy dog would be to, quite literally, act casual. Dogs have a heightened sense of our blood pressure, so when you remain calm (even if you’re in a crowded animal clinic and others are watching you) and act like the trigger isn’t an issue at all, the dog will respond as such. You want to encourage her, but not force her. As you lead her to the scale and she hesitates, keep

18

a firm grip on the leash, but don’t pull or loosen it. Have her come one step forward, and when she does, give her a verbal reward. A simple “Good job!” works, as she’s taking baby steps forward. When the dog faces her fear, reward her. If you have a fearful dog, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the dog has been abused in the past. It could mean that he or she just hasn’t been exposed to that particular trigger before, or maybe was exposed but it wasn’t a positive experience, or perhaps the dog’s hesitant behavior was previously rewarded, etc. Our dogs are very intelligent, so you want them to use their minds, face their fears and become a confident canine.

An animal lover all her life, Megan MacKenzie started working with animals professionally in 2007. She’s worked at local animal hospitals, a grooming salon, and started her dog training career at a pet store in Kernersville in 2011. She joined the Moms4Paws family in the fall of 2015 and currently lives in High Point with “Resette” her Carolina Dog, “Mitzie” her chinchilla, and “Little Man” her miniature horse. Baxter.

Wolverine.

Every once in a while a dog enters your life and changes everything...Baxter believes he has the power to do this for you and he is wanting a chance to prove it! Baxter is a five year old German Short Hair and Jack Russell Terrier mix. He is housebroken, cratetrained and up-to-date on all vaccines. He loves to go on long walks and meet up with friends. Baxter does prefer females over other male dogs so proper, slow introductions with any other canines are a must. He is eager to please and takes redirection beautifully. Please consider giving this established boy a loving home to call his own!

Don’t let the name fool you. He may have the furry characteristics of his comic hero namesake but Wolverine is a sweet little Feist mix who simply loves to cuddle! He is a little fearful of strangers and takes a while to warm up to new people but once he does, he is playful, active and follows basic commands. He gets along very well with other dogs, seems to be a little afraid of cats and is just fantastic with children! Wolfie does not like being crated and will whine when left alone so he needs a family with plenty of together time to spare. He’s not completely housebroken but his fosters are patiently working on getting him there. Wolverine would make a great addition to any family!

Sadie

Roxanne is a female American

is a bold and beautiful brown and white tabby who likes to butt heads with you as a sign of affection. She is young and full of energy that needs to be burned off with lots of exciting play, especially with toys or a stick! She loves to leap and jump to “catch” paper balls. Sadie has quite the sweet disposition, however, she doesn’t seem to particularly like other cats and is afraid of dogs, so a home that can honor her as the only pet may be best!

Rottweiler who weighs 70 pounds and is thought to be born around 6-16-09. She is very loving and craves affection! She is housebroken, good with children, cats and dogs of all size (even small yapping ones). She likes to play outside and loves to swim! Roxy is still getting used to walking on a leash and can tend to pull a bit but is learning. Roxy is heartworm positive but will begin treatments soon. This is a great dog who wants nothing more than to be close to her person. Roxy is goofy, sweet and just plain adorable! She is not a barker, is actually quite meek in nature and would be most happy in a home with a fenced yard and a companion! Olivia is a pretty, two year old Tortie who can best be described as “gentle”. She is shy but warms up fast to anyone giving her wet cat food. Although she is usually a quiet kitty, she has a lot to say when it’s time for her dinner! Olivia purrs when she is petted and scratched around her ears. She is content to be by herself as a single pet but she also seems to like having the company of other gentle cats. Diamond

is an absolute gem of a cat! She is a spayed, approximately 5 year old female who adores curling up in a lap and purring to her heart’s content as you scratch her chin or behind the ears. She is very social, highly intelligent and loves to play. Diamond is by no means a shy feline--she will let you know when she is need of your attention. She also takes great pleasure in spontaneously jumping onto a keyboard and interrupting your work for a thorough head butt. Diamond is kid-friendly, dog-friendly and cat-friendly—she truly is a wonderful girl who deserves her happily ever after!! Heidi has a golden tan coat speckled with black and a very sweet personality. Her big, dark, chestnut eyes are so full of expression and warmth. Mitzi & Cheyenne are bonded 12 year old sisters who have a lot of life left in their tiny bodies. Mitzi, the tan girl, weighs in at 4 lbs. She loves to sit on your lap and cuddle. She is also playful with some of the other dogs in her foster home. Cheyenne, the beautiful black and white girl, weighs in at only 3.2 Chihuahua Rescue lbs. Don’t let her size fool you, because she is the boss! She also loves to sit with you or snuggle under blankets, but she runs the house and doesn’t let her foster mom’s deaf Boxer get away with anything. Slater

Snoops.

is a very handsome 2 year old Lab mix. He came to us heartworm positive, has finished his medical treatment and is ready to enjoy anyone and anything he encounters. A perfect size at 35 pounds, he likes to cuddle, and be near his people, but is equally happy frolicking alone or with canine companions. Crate-trained and beginning to work on obedience, Slater is quick to learn and is motivated by treats and ear scratches. He loves car rides, meeting new people and is very good around dogs. He will need a slow introduction to cats as he thinks they are very interesting.

How does a 16 year old 14 pound Shih Tzu end up homeless? We sure don’t know! Snoops is a real cutie but needs some TLC. He is eager for affection but not sure how to ask for it. Snoops needs love and attention and to have some regular grooming appointments. This poor fellow was just left to be matted and have dry skin. We have several groomers who help out with our rescue dogs and would love to continue to help you make Snoops the handsome fellow he deserves to be.

He does well on a leash, especially with a harness and is pretty well housetrained - even better now that he is fixed. He is also crate-trained and very smart. He is not destructive, loves to snuggle, and gets excited about new people. Barley would be a great addition to any family! Come out and meet Barley at an AARF adoption fair at 311 Harvey St, Saturdays from noon to 3pm. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within one hour of Winston-Salem. n

Lucas

is a friendly Beagle boy who was found as a stray. His rescuers brought him to AARF to find a good home. Unfortunately, Lucas was positive for heartworms. He is a young dog though, and has pulled through the heartworm treatment well and is now ready to find his forever home. He is housetrained and crate-trained and an all-around good dog. Come out and meet Lucas at an AARF adoption fair at 311 Harvey St, Saturdays from noon to 3pm. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within one hour of Winston-Salem. n

Lady Sansa Stark has made quite a name for herself, along with being born and rescued from a drain with her four siblings. She is the most inquisitive of her brother and sisters, most fascinated by the cleaning of the litter box. The only thing she loves more than watching her foster mom clean is playing in her cat tunnel. You can’t help but fall in love with those big, precious eyes! Sansa was born in late May. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Lolly

Frankie

is a powerhouse in a little body! She is a cutie pie, very energetic and fearless. She’s also very cuddly and sweet with a darling personality and big purr. She would love to stay with her brother Bartholomew, but it’s OK to split them up if needed. Her approximate date of birth is mid May. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

36

is a young tuxedo cat ready to go to a new home. She was in an awful place before coming to AARF. Now she’s looking for a longtime love. She will reward your care with purring and fun times. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Meet an absolute sweetheart: Penny. She may be deaf but she doesn’t know it (and don’t tell her). Rascally Penny is 3 years old, 17 pounds and healthy! She’s housebroken and even knows some hand signals! She loves dogs (who are submissive to her) people and cats. Penny is leash aggressive and would do best in a fenced yard where she can get her exercise and playtime.

Charlotte

Cranberry

is an exuberant youngster who is just over 1 year old. This girl loves attention and enjoys splashing around in the water. When it comes to people, Charlotte has never met a stranger. She has a high energy level and an awesome sense of fun. She needs an active owner who will continue to work with her on training and obedience. Charlotte is spayed, up-to-date on all of her vaccinations, is microchipped, negative for heartworms and on monthly preventative. You can make this happy girl a part of your family for only $45.

was once a roamer of the streets but now she is part of the cat gang at the shelter. She loves to be petted, brushed, and pampered. While getting her beauty rest, Cranberry dreams of living in a loving home where she can watch the birds from a sunny windowsill. Cranberry is a polite lady that gets along well with her cats and is the PURRfect balance between play and cuddle. She is spayed, up-to-date on all of her vaccinations, microchipped, and negative for FELV and FIV. Her adoption fee is $75.

Duke

Gabrielle

is 3 years old and has a heart as big as his head!. He is kid tested, kid approved, walks great on a leash, and will greet everyone he meets with a big sloppy kiss. Duke is an affectionate, friendly boy who loves being close to his people. He would love to take a long walk in the evening and then come back to cuddle on the couch. Duke is heartworm positive but is already being treated and should make a full recovery as long as his family ensures that he completes his treatment. He is already neutered, up-to-date on all of his vaccinations, and microchipped. His adoption fee is $45.

is a beautiful diluted tortoiseshell kitty that was found wandering as a stray. For some reason, she has been at the shelter since March and continues to get overlooked; maybe because she is the quiet, laid back type. Gabrielle is PURRfect for a busy family who needs an independent companion to come home to. Her adoption fee is only $50; she is already spayed, up-to-date on all of her vaccinations, microchipped, and negative for FELV and FIV.

Starlight.

Harvey

When her owners decided to move and not take her with them, Starlight found herself as a resident of the shelter. She is used to a quiet home with all the amenities that spoiled cats are accustomed to, not a noisy shelter where she has to share her space with other cats. Starlight is 1-2 years old and a low-maintenance girl that would fit nicely in a low-energy home as the only pet. Her adoption fee is $50; she is spayed, up-to-date on all of her vaccinations, negative for FELV and FIV, and microchipped.

is a 2 year old Beagle mix that was found wandering as a stray. Handsome, howling’ Harvey is a dog that doesn’t have a care in the world and just takes everything in stride. Sweet, playful, and smart make Harvey a good fit for almost any home, but being part Beagle, he often lets his nose lead the way so a fenced in yard would be great. Harvey gets along with most dogs so a meet and greet with any other household dogs is recommended. He is negative for heartworms and on monthly prevention. Harvey is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and his adoption fee is $95.

Mac's Longmire is an affectionate, black boy who loves to be brushed. He will stand still forever as long as we keep brushing him. A strange name? Not at all. Longmire is named for a modern-day, western mystery, television series set in Wyoming. All of his litter mates have names from the series, inspired by novels written by Craig Johnson, a real cowboy. As with most Greyhound Friends of NC adults, human or non human, this guy has a bit of baggage. When he is lying in his space, we leave him alone. He needs to be in a home with no other dogs or children. Perhaps cat-trainable, this three-year-old is beautiful and one of my favorites.

Frank. I’m Frank and hoping to meet my forever family soon. I am an eight year old Weimaraner and have a lot of energy, so I would like a home that can keep me active by walking, hiking and maybe even teaching me how to hunt. I am housebroken and really smart, so please take me to training so I can learn all of my manners. I really like food, so I will train quickly. I will also sneak food off your counters if you’re not looking, but am ready to learn good manners. Please research my breed and go online to apply and adopt me. Amore came to us from a home where he got along well with the older children but apparently found the younger one just a little too rambunctious. He is a gentle soul and his former family did a wonderful job raising and training him. He came to us with mastery of a variety of commands, including knowing to sit, down, stay, come, leave it, quit, drop it, and heel. One of our volunteers has this Doberman Rescue of the Triad to say about him: “What a sweet boy! Not only is he strikingly handsome, but he is equally as loving and well-behaved! He walked very well on the leash and listened to commands. Yet again we have another cuddle bug, and a big cuddle bug, might I add! He’s an all-around awesome Dobie!” Amore needs to go to a home with older children or no children, and no cats. Read more about Amore online at www.doberman-rescue.com. O

smund (center) has been such a joy to our family, he has grown to be very happy since shelter life. He lives with my husband and I, along with our other pets. We have had a lot of fun over the years camping, boating and hiking. He has had a few quirks having spent the first three years of his life in the shelter system, but that is what makes him who he is!

By Ashley K. Price

Five years ago this past June I wrote a story to celebrate the adoption of my new dog Osmund from the Guilford County Animal Shelter. Fate placed he and I at the same place at the right time, and he chose me to be his mom! Osmund is a red tick Coonhound, he was three years old when we met at an adoption fair in Greensboro, NC. I fell for him right away and knew that I could give him a good home. Thanks to the help of some generous sponsors Osmund went home with me that very day. Due to his regal appearance I chose to give him a formal and full name, so he was then dubbed Sir Osmund Oswald the First! Life has been good for the both of us since. The animal shelter had received Osmund as a transfer from another shelter located in South Carolina. Apparently some shelters will choose to transfer dogs when they encounter over crowding, if there is availability close enough that the cost of travel is lower than that of euthanasia. Lucky for us Osmund was brought up north! I could tell that our new dog did not know much of, if anything, about life outside a shelter. There are some traits you can expect from a rescue, and it is good to be aware of as much of their history as possible to help you understand the behavior of your pet. My husband and I have three rescue dogs and a rescue cat currently, and I can tell you that they are all different! Osmund’s main thing is food. Although we have worked on a couple of issues with success, his appetite still seems close to insatiable. One could deduce that this food obsession stems from a time when he was often unsure of where or when his 48

next meal would be coming if at all. There are some ways which we have been successful in working with Osmund’s hunger and being territorial about his food. Prior to adopting Os my only other dog, Maggie, was free fed - meaning we kept a bowl of food out for her to eat at her leisure. Once Osmund came home free feeding came to an end. We trained both dogs to only eat out of their exclusive bowls and to eat two separate meals a day. This has stayed consistent and been helpful to this day especially with the inclusion of our third dog Coal. The cat’s food is kept on a counter up high and far back enough that the dogs cannot get to it. Osmund has done very well with isolated feeding, but if he does see an opportunity to sneak a snack he will take it! Os is a counter climber, he stands on his back legs and WILL reach what he can get to on the counter and eat it! He is incredibly stealthy, usually you will not know about the situation until after the fact. He is especially partial to pork products, earning him the nickname “Tenderloin.” There are a lot of stories about snatched sandwiches, cupcakes, beef jerky, but most infamously a pork tenderloin that a friend had been marinating for 24 hours. ate chicken that night while Osmund napped soundly outside on the porch! Thankfully our friend was a dog person as well and so he was very forgiving. Another issue we had when Osmund first came home was separation anxiety. We are past it now, but initially Os was so exuberant that he had a new family he really got upset when we would not be home or separate him from the other dog. Routine really helps when training a dog to get past separation issues. If your pet can get used to your work and social schedule they will become less stressed out in the times that you are away. Also having other pets helped Osmund not feel so lonely when we were not at home. In one of the early days, when he first came into our home, Os had to be kept away from the other dog and cat due to a medical issue. I put Os in our bedroom with fresh water, food, his bed and toys with the radio playing. I arranged to only work four hours the first day so he would not be left alone for too long. When I arrived home from work Osmund greeted me at the door. Turning the corner I found my bedroom door chewed clear through all the way from the floor to the door handle! It looked as though a shark had swam up from the carpet and took a giant bite out of the door like it was a boogie board! But there in front of me sat my sweet boy wagging his tail so happy to see my return. There was no way I could scold him for what he had done hours prior to me coming home. If I had gotten upset at that moment he may have only associated it with my coming home or his greeting at the door. From then on I have done everything possible to ensure Os does not feel trapped when left alone, this too comes from shelter life. Being stuck in a kennel is no fun, this includes no crates and definitely no closed doors for Os! Other than that Os has had such great success adapting to our family and 2011 article in Here is the photo from the ide lifestyle. We zine alongs Triad Happy Tails Maga s. ma rist Ch t las m fro one enjoy camping, hiking, boating and lots of belly rubs! Socializing our rescues with each other and other dogs has been a great help in getting them out of that shelter mentality. Being sure to always reward good behavior is a must, but most of all raising a rescue takes patience and understanding and lots and lots of love.
