40 For the Love of Animals

Lilly is a big, beautiful Maine Coon mix born March of 2011. We rescued her thinking she was a Manx mix, but it appears that her bobtail is not something with which she was born. We contacted a Maine Coon breeder who confirmed she really is significantly Maine Coon. Lily wound up in a high kill shelter after her owner died. She adores people and loves to be picked up and snuggled, she doesn’t even mind having her face smooched. She’s not fond of other cats though, and would be happiest as an only cat. Lily is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped and is FeLV/FIV negative.

Having always been fascinated by the human-animal bond,

The Value of Loving Your Pet Through Preventative Care

R

egular veterinary visits for your four-legged family member are not only essential for his or her longevity and quality of life, but will be economically more favorable for you, the pet owner, over your pet’s lifetime. During a routine visit your veterinarian can detect early disease processes, administer vaccines for incurable diseases, provide valuable nutrition counseling, detect and treat pain, and prescribe preventative products for parasites that are not only potentially fatal but could also cause serious illness to people in the house. Working together with your veterinary team, you will be able to ensure that your pet is healthy and comfortable from puppy and kittenhood through his or her golden years!

Preventative Pet Care Visits—What to Expect The first thing the veterinarian will do at a preventative health visit is take a history and perform a thorough examination of your pet. This allows for the detection of several diseases that can be nearly impossible to detect at home, such as heart, dental, joint, skin and ear disease to name just a few. Has your pet been exhibiting a change in behavior? This could be their way of telling you they are in pain or suffering. The doctor will also recommend a screening blood test to look for abnormalities undetectable on physical exam, such as kidney disease, thyroid disease and diabetes. Early detection of disease means more treatment options and improved longevity. Additionally, disease prevention is much more affordable than disease treatment! Your veterinarian will then review with you recommended vaccinations for potentially incurable diseases based on your pet’s lifestyle. The highly contagious and potentially fatal parvovirus (a very prevalent virus in North Carolina) can be prevented with a series of puppy vaccines and regular boosters that cost around $20 each. The disease itself can cost $1000-2000 to treat and, sadly, treatment is not always successful. Vaccine administration for any disease must be done by your veterinarian so that the appropriate vaccine is given correctly, at the right age and with the correct frequency. Regular veterinary visits are an ideal opportunity to discuss your pet’s nutrition. Pet food is a highly debated topic in recent years and there is tons of misinformation out there! For example, did you know that a high protein diet may actually be harmful for your pet? Your veterinarian’s education and clinical experience make them the ideal resource for you and your pet in deciding what diet is appropriate

based on their breed, lifestyle, age and systemic health. Additionally, your veterinarian can show you how to evaluate your pet’s body condition score (weight to body size ratio). Studies show that 45% of dogs and 58% of cats are overweight, and that a pet whose weight is ideal lives on average two years longer than an overweight animal. We all want our furry family members to be with us for as long as possible, but we may be loving them to death with incorrect nutritional choices. Parasite prevention is another important topic that will be covered by your veterinarian. Parasites are not only potentially fatal to your pet, but some can be transmitted to people and cause serious illness. Each of the common parasites can make your pet critically ill, resulting in lengthy and expensive hospital stays. Prevention is the key! There are several products for sale that are ineffective or even potentially harmful to your pet. Your veterinarian can review with you the appropriate preventative products for fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites and heartworms.

Cats and Preventative Health Care Studies show that cats are not being brought in for preventative visits as frequently as dogs. This is concerning because cats are much more likely to hide their illness than dogs. By the time a cat shows you they are not feeling well they could be critically ill. Symptoms such as decreased appetite and gradual weight loss can be imperceptible to owners, and pain is often hidden as a survival instinct. Early disease detection and treatment implementation can make a crucial difference in the patient’s outcome. We know that getting your cat to the veterinary hospital can be a challenging feat! To make your cat’s carrier more appealing, leave the carrier with bedding open in a room in your house. Sprinkle cat nip on the bottom and leave toys and treats in there. You can also try spraying the carrier with Feliway, a cat pheromone that reduces anxiety. If your cat is absolutely opposed to the carrier, you can try scooping them up in a pillow case. Always make sure that your cat is properly contained on their trip to the veterinarian! Remember, loving your pet through routine preventative care from your veterinarian is more affordable than sick visits and will ensure that you enjoy the best possible bond with your pet for as long as possible! Tiny reminders of something familiar in a strange environment can help settle the nerves on someone’s first night. A blanket or toy, in unfamiliar territory, is a simple, small act of kindness to reassure a frightened animal. Finding these “gifts” and making them their own, can provide some measure of comfort to a frightened new resident.

mess with canned food, like little kids. A good trick to get someone to take their medicine, is to simply hide it in their canned food. Another item that is always appreciated is kitty litter. With all the cats that come through the shelter each year cat litter is always eagerly accepted. The RCAS buys close to 10,000 pounds of litter each year! Our shelter was touched in many ways in 2013. We live in a wonderful, diverse community that works together to provide not only the simple comforts and enrichments needed at the shelter, but sponsorships to showcase animals and increase adoptions. We receive many checks monthly to sponsor a lucky animal’s adoption fee. The donation of a sponsorship covers: the cost of the spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchipping, heartworm testing for dogs and Felv/FIV testing for cats. In addition, the sponsored dogs get to show off their winning personalities and talents in our display case, front and center in the adoption hall. Lucky felines bask in their extra-large condo sunbathing under the window, waiting for that special person to walk through the door and see them first. The community also plays a vital role in transferring animals out of the shelter to other locations. The RCAS has good relationships with many breed specific organizations. In addition, there are other rescue groups who participate in

transferring puppies up North. Donations make it possible to transfer these puppies, fully vaccinated and healthy to the best of the shelter’s ability. Because of the many unwanted litters being born each year, this transfer connection has become a great asset and partnership for our shelter. Argueably the most important factor in helping reduce the rise of unwanted litters each year, is the free spay and neuter clinics. RCAS is fortunate to be a part of these clinics and for the opportunity to make this vital option available to the citizens of Rockingham County. The animals are brought to the RCAS and placed into carriers, then transported to the Planned Pethood Spay & Neuter Clinic where the surgeries are performed. After surgery the animals are transported back to the shelter for pick up by their owners. Contact the shelter for more information on how to qualify (see color block).

Whether you donate to an animal shelter, a rescue mission or a personal charity that is close to your heart, your donations have a huge effect. No donation is ever too small or unappreciated.

What Can You Do? There are varied ways to donate and many involve a selfless act of kindness.

work that they do. It takes a community working together to make our world a better place for all creatures. So, as we get ready for those tax returns, itemizing and deductions; and as you gather your receipts from last year’s donations, know that everything made an impact in some way towards someone’s life. Here’s to 2014 and may the generosity continue.

u Many children in our community have asked to receive no birthday gifts for themselves, but instead, provide gifts for the animals at the shelter.

u And it’s not just the children who are donating birthday gifts. Pet parents, celebrating their fur kid’s birthdays, are donating gifts to the shelter as well.

Who to Contact The Rockingham County Animal Shelter is located at 250 Cherokee Camp Road in Reidsville, North Carolina. We are open to the public six days a week. Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 1pm to 5pm. We invite you to come and visit our facility and all the animals we have to offer.

u Even during untimely circumstances, people honor a pet lover’s memory in a very special way. In lieu of flowers, they make a donation, in the person’s memory, to the shelter. u Another way to be of help is providing carriers to transport animals to the spay/ neuter clinic. The shelter furnishes carriers as a means of transport for every animal that is signed up for the free clinic. People have donated their used carriers that they no longer need, or their pets have outgrown. Even new carriers have been donated to help safely transport the animals to the free clinic. By supporting any of your local organizations and reaching out to them, you’re showing support for all the hard

If you are a citizen of Rockingham County and would like more information on how you can qualify for the FREE spay & neuter program, call the shelter at 336-394-0075. All of our adoptable animals can be found online either at — www.rockinghamcountyanimalshelter.org or www.petango.com.

The Rockingham County Shelter hopes people will take advantage of the $15.00 adoption fee for all their cats in 2014!

Willow.

This one-year old terrier mix weighs in at about 25 pounds and we believe that 20 of those pounds are made up of pure sugar. She is SO SWEET! Willow is smart, loves other animals, and she doesn’t mind sharing the bed with you. This dog is a true gem! For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n

Charlie. This dapper chap came to us after his owner had back surgery. He was a tad shy at first, but that went away as quickly as it came. He is a 7 year old hunk of handsome and he loves to warm a spot on the couch for you. He grew up with a dog and feels comfortable around calm animals. Charlie is a low-maintenance guy with a lot of love to give. For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n

Edison. Shh! Edison is taking a cat nap! He is a 4 month old kitten with a heart of gold and a play drive that goes on for days. Edison is still learning to walk on his big feet (we imagine he will be a big kitty), and it’s adorable to watch him slide around the floor after his kitty toys! This little man will keep you smiling! For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n

Jessie.

Hello world, my name is Jessie! I am adventurous, tons of fun, and I love other animals. Here is what I am looking for in a companion: Someone who will buy me wand toys and fake mice, someone who will let me cuddle up in their lap for some snuggles, and someone who will listen to me when I talk. I do love to talk! Adopt me! For information on Jessie, please call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n

Pippa. Oh,

There’s nothing unhealthy about this treat! Cookie is sweet as sugar, and her adorable black and white coat goes with any outfit! She does great with other laid-back animals, although she would prefer to spend all of her time with you. She loves to give hugs and head butts! This girl is very special! Adopt her!

hey! I’m Pippa! My sister Kate and I came in together. We are 5 month old Chihuahuas! Here are some things I love: toys, cuddles, nap times, my foster sister (a spaniel named Chelsea), food, and kisses! I am very bouncy and playful! Will you please be my best friend?

Allie, Arlo, and Andrew. Welcome to the “A Team!” These three little babies, Allie, Arlo and Andrew, and their six siblings had a rough start in life. Their very pregnant mother, reportedly a Golden Retriever mix, was brought to the Animal Shelter in December, just before giving birth to her pups. She delivered nine puppies on Christmas Day in a cold cement kennel. Mom was aggressive to the shelter workers and wouldn’t let anyone near her puppies. Sadly, she had to be euthanized. The shelter workers contacted AARF and we found a foster mom who could bottle-feed these week-old puppies until they were eating on their own. These nine pups have been cuddled and coddled and are very loving babies now looking for their forever homes. They are very playful, love toys and will steal your heart if you give them half a chance. If you are interested in adopting one of these sweet puppies, come to one of AARF’s Saturday adoption fairs from noon to 4pm at 311 Harvey Street in Winston-Salem or call 768-7387 for more information. Due to a home visit being part of our adoption process, applicants must live within a one hour radius of Winston-Salem. n

Andy was rescued from the animal shelter with his mom and three litter mates. He’s a very distinguished and handsome brown mackerel tabby. Andy is a playful and loving kitten. He is a bit shy, but will tumble and play with the best of them. Andy, like his litter mates, is very loving, sweet, and social. He’ll come when you clap your hands and call his name. Andy was born in June 2013, has been neutered and is current on shots. Contact AARF at 336-768-7387 or www.aarfanimals.org if you would like more information about Andy. n

She’s current on all shots, has been spayed and is very healthy. Contact AARF at 336-768-7387 or www.aarfanimals.org if you would like more information about Olive. n

Bonnie.

Ellie.

Meet Bonnie of Bonnie & Clyde! She’s a 10 lb. Dachshund Pomeranian mix born in August 2013. Bonnie and her brother were left homeless when their owner was evicted from her home. Bonnie can be a shy little girl but warms up quickly. Her heart is big and she truly loves everyone. Bonnie is spayed and up-to-date on her vaccinations. She loves other dogs but would also be fine as the only little lap dog in the house. Do you have the right home for Bonnie?

Meet Ellie! This little girl is about as popular as you can get. All the puppies love her. She is little Miss Congeniality and will play with anyone. Ellie was born in late November 2013 and is spayed and up-to-date on her shots. She is crate-trained and working on becoming house-trained. Ellie came to the Animal Rescue & Foster Program from a bad area of High Point and is now in a great foster home with brother Martin.

Martin,

Smudge.

named for the great Martin Luther King, is a great puppy and we feel like he will go on to greater things. Born in High Point, NC in a litter of 9 puppies, mom was a Pit Bull mix and dad was a traveling salesman. Martin has a great spirit and loves everyone. He is always happy and enjoys playing hard and sleeping hard. Martin was born 11/30/13 and is already neutered and is up-to-date on his shots. Are you ready to be Martin’s lucky owner?

Meet Mr. Smudge. He’s a 10-12 month old black and white kitten that is a Casanova. Smudge has a purrbox that never shuts down. He was rescued by the nice people in another local rescue who needed a place for him to stay so ARFP welcomed him into our group. Smudge is neutered, up-to-date on shots and heartworm negative. He plays well with the other cats at the adoption center and according to him dogs are OK too. Would you like a Smudge in your life?

Amy

is looking for a loving, quiet home. Amy’s owner had to give her up due to illness. She would do best in a one or two cat home. Amy has lived with dogs and is fine with them. She is three years old and is updated on all of her shots. She is totally blind in one eye and partially blind in another for reasons unknown. She is on prescription canned food for cystitis and will need to continue to prevent any episodes. She is a sweet, loving Calico/Siamese mix who loves to be brushed and petted. You could call Amy “Special Needs” but we prefer not to other than to say she is beautiful, inside and out! Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n

336-965-1059 • Monday – Friday from 9:00 – 5:00 THE ANSWER TO ANIMAL SHELTER OVERPOPULATION

O

ver 70,000 puppies and kittens are born in the U.S. each day. Some are born to breeders, some to people who want their cat or dog to have the ‘experience’ of having a litter or who want their children to witness the ‘miracle of life,’ and some result from allowing fertile animals to roam and mate. The last one is a beauty, to roam and mate in someone else’s backyard. The old adage is still in vogue; let someone else worry about it. How many times have we heard, it’s not my problem, you should have had that female fixed. Whatever the reason, the number of cats and dogs far exceeds the number of loving homes available. In 2012 the percentage of dogs and cats euthanized at the Guilford County Animal Shelter (GCAS) was over 50%. This is no fault of the shelter as they are trying their best to find homes for every animal surrendered, but that number far exceeds the number of prospective new owners as well as space to house those turned in. The overpopulation is not the fault of the GCAS, it is the fault of irresponsible pet owners. Many people drop animals off in rural areas, thinking that someone will take them in or that they will be able to fend for themselves. Sadly, the tragic fact remains that most of these animals suffer untimely, horrible deaths. Starvation, disease, freezing, being hit by cars and more unregulated breeding is the end result. Spaying and neutering helps stem the tide of homeless cats and dogs. It does not affect the animals’ energy levels or change their personali-

ties, as some people mistakenly believe. Spaying eliminates the stress and discomfort that females endure during heat periods, eliminates the risk of uterine cancer, and greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancer. Neutering makes males far less likely to roam or fight, prevents testicular cancer, and reduces the risk of prostate cancer. Altered animals are less likely to contract deadly, contagious diseases that are spread through bodily fluids, such as feline AIDS and leukemia. Even if someone can find homes for one litter of kittens or puppies, the overpopulation cycle continues if the animals are allowed to breed. Is there an answer? Of course there is, responsible pet ownership teamed with low cost spay/neuter clinics can significantly reduce the number of animals that are surrendered to the GCAS each year.

don’t qualify for above? There are three low cost spay/neuter clinics located in Greensboro alone. Sheets Pet Clinic 336.852.8488, The Planned Pethood Spay and Neuter Clinic 336.299.3060 and the SPOT mobile van 336.279.0563 associated with the Guilford County Animal Shelter. FERAL CAT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM 336.378.0878 / www.feralcatassistance.org

Cashew

Chai.

is a lap kitty whose purr can be activated by a single touch. He loves gentle belly rubs and will stand on his tiptoes to get the maximum rub when you stroke his back. At nearly 2 years old, this sweet boy loves to play and gets along with most other cats and feline-friendly dogs. Cashew has been adopted once, but one of the cats in that home just couldn’t accept him. So this beautiful boy is back at FCAP, seeking a loving home. Cashew is current on vaccinations, has been neutered, and has a microchip.

If you are among those who like to talk to their pets, you might want to speak with Chai. He is happy to strike up a conversation. His main topic of conversation is himself! He will tell you what he wants and will tell you again if you don’t respond. Although Chai doesn’t like to be picked up, he enjoys snuggle time with his humans. He would prefer a home with older children and adults. An intelligent cat at 2 years old, Chai likes to outsmart toys designed to challenge feline minds. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, has a microchip, and has been neutered.

Call 378-0878 or visit www.feralcatassistance.org for details. n

Pearl is on the hunt for a special person to love. This gorgeous silver tabby warms up slowly, but your patience will pay off. Although Pearl does not seek constant attention, she loves to lie in the sun near her human companion and appreciates petting and an occasional belly rub. You can see the love in her brilliant green eyes. Pearl is a calm girl but also enjoys play time. She prefers to be your only kitty but would adapt to life with a dog. Pearl would do best with adults and teenagers. If you seek a beautiful cat who does not require lots of attention, Pearl may be the one. This kitty is up-to-date on vaccinations, has been spayed, and has a microchip.

Sweet Kelsey was found behind a shopping center with some feral cats. But she is anything but feral. Kelsey loves to snuggle and spend time with humans. She is good with gentle children and enjoys being petted. Kelsey is 2 years old and is a sister of Chai. She is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped, and spayed.

Howie.

Despite his humble start in life, handsome Howie has never met a stranger. As a kitten, he was rescued from a feral cat colony where he had been abandoned. That was a good day for this Maine Coon mix, now 9 months old and quite the extrovert. At 10.5 lbs., Howie already is a big boy and likely will grow larger. He was born with a heart murmur, but you would never know it. He loves to play with other cats and friendly dogs. Howie likes to be held and will give you a kiss on the face. The next minute, he’s off your lap for some roughand-tumble playtime. Howie would like to have a loving, permanent home. He’s is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered. Kiwi came into FCAP’s care when the wife of her beloved owner put her outside after the husband died. A neighbor noticed poor Kiwi, and that’s when her luck took a turn. The neighbor took care of Kiwi, cleaned up her coat, got rid of the fleas, and updated her shots. In her foster home, Kiwi loves to sit in her caregiver’s lap. She is happy and affectionate, ready to be Princess at your home. Kiwi has been spayed, vetted and microchipped. Call 378-0878 or visit www.feralcatassistance.org for details. n

Meow Meow & Cici are twin sisters who are quiet and sweet. They’ve had a hard life in a trailer park where they had to race up to tree tops or hide under cars to escape dogs, cats and mean-spirited people. These petite, shiny little bookends are easy to get along with and enjoy a lap in which Purrfect Friends Cat Rescue & Adoption to purr and “make biscuits.” It would be great to see them adopted together. They’re spayed, vetted and ready for a new home. (There are two other sisters in the park waiting for space so they can be brought in, as well.) Lacey.

Tabatha

Hi! I’m Lacey - and I’m waiting for playtime with you! I’m just 18 pounds, the perfect size for ripping and running in a smaller yard. I love to play and would be great learning agility - something we could do together. Plus I’m 2-1/2 years old and over the “puppy stage”. So pick me up and we’ll find a dog park - I’m waiting!

here - and what a great name for me! I’m a tiny Tibetan spaniel. I look like a lap dog but if that includes running laps too, then I’m your dog! The kids at People & Paws 4 Hope have been training me in basic obedience and I’m having a lot of fun. I like small dogs, kids and lots of snuggles.

name is “Sport” and it is a perfect name for me! I LOVE sports. Anything like running, playing, fetching, and just goofing around is fine with me. I’m a year old and great with other dogs and (don’t tell) I even like cats!! So take me out to the ball game......

Have you ever seen a cat sit so straight? Neville puts all the other kitties to shame with his posture. Of course, underneath all that prim and proper, Neville is a real smush! Neville is a year and a half and has striped spots! Yes, he has stripes in his spots. You’ve got to come by the SPCA to get a look at that!

Little Miss Shelby puts a lot of spunk in a little tabby body! She is 6 months old and seems like a typical tabby - but she’s anything but typical! Shelby is fun and playful and loves other cats. Once she has exhausted herself at play, you better sit down, this little girl will need a nap - right on your lap!

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER 336.394.0075 / www.rockinghamcountyanimalshelter.org

All cats and kittens are $15 for the entire year of 2014. Dasher

Barry

is charming, debonair and well educated. At 2 years old, this Shepherd mix always has a glimmer of something bigger than these shelter walls can give. Dasher has been studying the art of attracting the right family since coming to the shelter on December 5, 2013. Although well read, Dasher has been through a few roommates because of his advice. Dasher is here waiting for you, the perfect family, to find him at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter and take him home today! Adoption Fee: $50.

is nothing more then a sweet, playful, and happygo-lucky guy. His best buddy is Dasher. On lazy Sunday afternoons they enjoy talking about their ideal future families and what they might be like. Barry made his début at the shelter on December 19, 2013. Barry’s dream when he was a young Lab/Pit Mix pup was to be an all-star track and field athlete. As Barry reached the ripe old age of 1 year, his athletetic moments became rough housing with Dasher, followed by a nap. Adoption Fee: $50.

Buckles. A shaggy terrier might be all you see from the outside, but Buckles is an extra-extraordinary pooch. He loves to put on his dancing shoes. Buckles has all the moves from the Foxtrot, to the two-step, to shagging on the beach with that shaggy exterior. This 1-year old can really make you think, Fred Astaire who? For your enjoyment, come visit Buckles at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter where he has been performing shows daily for potential owners since January 22, 2014. Adoption Fee: $110. Aladdin.

Cupcake is a 2-year old Southern calico kitty who enjoys watching Paula Deen, baking and anything that takes a stick of butter. Cupcake is a sweet modest cat who has never displayed her ribbons in her kennel since her arrival date in late January. She would hate to make anyone jealous of her accomplishments. Cupcake is longing for a new home and modern kitchen so she can get back to the three things she loves the most: family, food and baking. Adoption Fee: $15. We are located at 250 Cherokee Camp Rd in Reidsville, NC 27320. n

Peabody. Peabody’s mother

This Aladdin is waiting for more than a princess; he wants the family of his dreams that will last a lifetime. He has traveled to many countries on his magic carpet before settling here on January 10, 2014. Aladdin is a smooth Blue Russian that has talked himself out of many tight situations during his 4 years. He has traded in the magic carpet for a cozy bed as he waits with all the other cats looking to be that “diamond in the rough.” Adoption Fee: $15.

had great aspirations for her boy. Her first thoughts were to give him an intelligent name, then knowledge, inspiration, and achievement would follow. It was quite the opposite for this 2 year old curious, mischievous and adventurous cat. As a young kitten he used many of his nine lives. Peabody loves being the center of attention and playing around. He misses having a family; he loved that bond he shared with his mother and how she looked after his mischievous, playful antics. Peabody wants to find that love all over again with a wonderful new family to call all his own. Adoption Fee: $15.

Feature Interview

For the Love of Animals It takes a village to help 600 animals, one animal at a time

Y

ou’ve been thinking about a makeover for your family room for months. Off you go, in search of the perfect sofa, maybe an end table and a few knick knacks to brighten up the room. You’re shopping, checking out the couches, when suddenly, you feel as if you’re being watched. You turn around, only to be face to face with two gorgeous, huge green eyes peering at you through the glass. You step closer, there are actually six eyes watching your every move from behind the window. You see rescue kitties everywhere. Orange, gray, black, white, fluffy tails, stubby tails, big cats, little cats. . .Where AM I? Welcome to Dynasty Furniture. We were in the store on a recent January day interviewing Deidra Thompson, owner of Dynasty Furniture and NC Art and Antiques Mall. THT: Tell us a little about your business, how and when you got started. DT: I have been in the furniture business for 26 years. When I was 23 years old I wanted to sell furniture. I actually started at a flea market and around two years later I opened my first little store on Patterson Avenue in Winston-Salem and it just grew and grew and grew. We then moved on to several other locations before ending up at our permanent location on Peters Creek Parkway. Last year we opened up a second Dynasty Furniture store at 1589 Skeet Club Rd. in High Point. THT: How many stores do you have? DT: We have three stores, Dynasty Furniture in Winston-Salem, Dynasty Furniture in High Point and NC Arts and Antiques Mall in Winston-Salem. THT: What makes your store unique? DT: For starters, we have an antiques mall, a furniture store, and an animal rescue center

40

include the animals in our circulars that we mail out. Jojo is in our latest commercial. THT: Is animal rescue a joint effort between all the employees?

all under one roof at our Winston-Salem location. THT: The cats have a room of their own? DT: Yes, most of the cats reside in the main cat room, but we have a separate room for any who are disagreeable. THT: So most of the cats get along? DT: This is rescue (laugh). We do not tolerate fighting, you have to get along or be separated.

DT: Absolutely! Everyone pitches in. At the store, even the big, burly delivery guys help. Every last one of them has been spotted in the store holding a kitten with a bottle in its mouth at some time or another! It’s a team and it’s a village. In other words, it takes every last one of us. We’ve even been known to take the little ones home with us. There were times I had three incubators in the bed with me with three or four babies in each incubator—all needing to be bottlefed every two hours. I have bottle-fed over 125 babies! Years ago we had so many baby kittens, so I stood up at church one Sunday and asked, “If anyone is willing to help bottle-feed the kittens, meet me at Dynasty at 1:00.” We had six people show up! For years, caregivers have been bringing in their clients to visit with the animals. This is truly a win-win situation—the love between the clients and the animals is healing to both.

THT: Tell us a little about your rescue.

THT: What would you say is the hardest part of animal rescue?

DT: We’ve been involved in rescue for over 14 years. All of our fosters are through the local rescue organization, AARF, which stands for Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation. We have placed over 600 animals throughout the years, both cats and dogs.

DT: It has to be witnessing the neglect and abuse of so many animals, which is truly heartbreaking. In addition, letting go of the baby kittens once we have bonded is terribly difficult, with the bottle-feeders being the absolute hardest. I have no children, so the fur babies are like my true kids.

THT: You foster dogs too?

THT: Have you always been involved in animal rescue?

DT: Oh, yes. We have had 12 dogs since the summer and all of them found fabulous homes. The dogs get lots of exposure here. While the animals have no contact with the furniture or antiques, you just might find one behind the counter on any given day. We also

March 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

DT: In a sense, but not like we do it today. Growing up, my nickname was Ellie Mae. I lived out in the country and if any animal was ever in need of care, I was right there to do it.

THT: So tell us the different ways you support animal rescue? DT: If you buy anything from ANY of our three stores, you are supporting animal rescue in one way or another. In addition to the many animals we have placed, we have a “Benefit Room” in our Winston-Salem store. Everything in that room goes toward animal rescue. We started AALF (All Animal Lovers Foundation) which helps animals in numerous ways. It benefits our foster kitties. It benefits local people that may not have the money to buy their pet’s food or that need help with vet bills. There are five animal welfare organizations (AARF, Davie County Humane Society, Fallen Angel Rescue Fund, Forgotten Felines of Forsyth and Hero Equine Rescue) whose supporters bring donated items to the Benefit Room on an ongoing basis. We then give them a donation certificate and label the donated items. Once the merchandise is sold, the organizations receive a check. THT: How can an individual donate to the Benefit Room? DT: Just come in and tell us you have antiques or collectibles for one of the groups, it is that simple. Your chosen group gets the proceeds for that sale. THT: Does the High Point store have a cat room?

DT: No, but I am working on a line of furniture for that store called The Benefit Line. Part of the proceeds from the sales will go to animal rescue. This program is a work in progress. We currently have pieces in the High Point store that benefit specific animal rescue groups. Forgotten Felines of Forsyth had a manufacturer that wanted to support them so we cleaned out a place in the showroom and are now selling the furniture to benefit Forgotten Felines. Once the furniture is sold, a check goes out. I truly feel like the High Point store came into being so I could feature the Benefit Line. My goal is to help many animal rescue groups so they can continue helping the animals. I know in my heart that the High Point store came into existence to help the animals. THT: Do you have anything else you would like to say? DT: I would like to reiterate, we work as a team, as a village, it takes a lot of people to make things happen. At the end of the day, it is so worth it. Just this past Tuesday, one of our girls (cats) that had been with us for five years went to her new home! THT: You are going to miss her. DT: Oh, yes, we certainly will, but she has a bed and a window now! We could not be happier.

SPECIFIC BREED & VARIOUS LOCAL RESCUE GROUPS Jake. I am 12 years old and would be an awesome addition to any family. I am completely, 100 % housebroken. Puppies are great and cute, but housebreaking can be quite an undertaking. I love adults, kids, cats and other dogs. In fact, I love everything! I especially LOVE to go for a ride. I don’t care where I go, just as long as I get to tag along. Sometimes us senior Carolina Basset Hound Rescue dogs get overlooked, just because of our age. That is silly if you ask me. I still have a lot of life and love left in me. I am just looking for somebody to give me a chance. Do you see my cute face in the picture? Who would not want to look at all that cuteness every day? If you would like more information about Jake, please visit our website at www.cbhr.com, or email rebecca.gering@cbhr.com. n

Foster, approximately 14 months old, arrived here underweight to a point near death, with significant pressure sores on his hips. In addition, he is heartworm positive. Of course, all that is being treated and resolved. Profound thanks to the shelter personnel and rescue angels who made it possible Doberman Rescue for him to arrive at Elijah’s House. of the Triad Despite his condition, he is a sweet and gentle boy who is coming along very nicely. With good food, medicine, laser treatments for the pressure sores, love, and care, he is gaining strength and is now able to do a little trot when he’s outside. He appears to be a gentle, loving, sweet boy who will no doubt blossom into a devoted, loving, and loyal companion. Read more at www.doberman-rescue.com/dogs/foster.php. n

Sunni is playful and silly but also loves to snuggle and danamackayphotography.com shower you with kisses. She adores her Boston Terrier Rescue of NC foster fur siblings and likes children too. She’s well-behaved and knows her manners. All she needs now is a home of her very own.

Barley. Hi! I’m a 9-year-old guy that loves to play with toys and sit in your lap. To tell the truth, I’d let you pet me 24/7 if you wanted to. I am neutered and up-to-date on shots. My current foster mom says that I’m totally Chihuahua Rescue house-trained and that I haven’t had an accident since I was a puppy. I am great on a leash and love to go on walks. I also love my crate and at night I will put myself to bed in my crate or if you tell me night, night I will go and get in myself. I know basic commands like sit and let’s go. I am one very loyal Chihuahua. I do take a little time to warm up to people but once I get to know you, I am your best friend for life. I like women better than men and I do not do small children. Bear is a 4 year old female Golden mix who is a good weight at 47 pounds. She is polite and rode well on the way to the clinic. Her foster family says “This is a GEM of dog. She has settled down after being wiggly the first day. She is fine with (their male dog), although Triad Golden they don’t have much interaction. Bear Retriever Rescue wants to please, sleeps quietly in her crate all night, and goes into the crate easily. So far I haven’t found any negative habits. She eats with (their dog) and there are no issues with food. She loves squeaky toys, and stays busy with a chew bone. Bear is fine on a walk, showing no issues when meeting a strange dog. She seems smart as she doesn’t get on furniture after we told her no, and doesn’t bolt at the door. And she loves to be brushed.” Please visit www.tgrr.org for more information. n

Training Your Pet

MULTI-DOG HOUSEHOLDS Learning to Live in Harmony

by Christopher Martin Dogs Anonymous

“Is there any way you can help me get my babies back together???” I can’t remember how many times I’ve heard this question asked, voice cracking with emotion, and how many times I’ve had to say “I don’t know”. Pack rehabilitation is an issue I am called on quite often, and it can be one of the more difficult issues to address in the world of canine behavior modification. Why? From my experiences, the biggest issue in rehabilitating a problem with these dogs is the owner. Not every inner-pack problem is brought on by the owner, but it’s a good place to start looking. I routinely find that the owner is in some way humanizing their “babies” and causing confusion and tension within the pack for doing so. A lot of what I see is one or more dogs jumping around on the furniture, running through the house wherever they like, or “claiming” the owner by sitting right beside and against them with a look towards the other dogs that says “just try to come over here and take MY attention!” All these behaviors are bad enough, but the all-too-often mistake of treating your dogs like little furry people in combination with the lack of in-home structure is a recipe for pack problems with often horrific results. The first step in getting your “babies” back together? Stop thinking of them as “your babies”! THEY ARE NOT. They are dogs and the only way for you to have a chance

44

March 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

at getting them back together is by honoring that aspect of your relationship with them. Secondly, get them on a walk TOGETHER asap. Keeping them divided is not going to help bring them back together. If anything, it can often make things worse. From there, I normally suggest implementing in-house structure to assure that the dogs’ movements through the house are controlled strictly by the owner, AND putting measures in place that will prevent the owner from practicing any behavior that may cause friction within the pack. (Hint: you don’t allow any of the dogs to sleep with you!) Pack rehabilitation takes time, patience, consistency, and most of all determination by the owner. From there, IT’S UP TO YOU!

I’m not a believer in “fixing” your dog’s behavior, then bringing the end result back to you. Faith is a very sweet and loving little lady! She is four years old and weighs seven lbs. She loves to be with her owner, either on your lap or going for a walk and really enjoys going for a car ride. Faith is well-behaved and has a very happy personality. She arrived at the animal shelter with an eye injury, and, unfortunately, lost her sight in that eye. She is spayed, fully vaccinated, and microchipped. Adoption fee will apply.

Lola was recently adopted) came in together as strays. A fun bunch of cooperative kittens that heard shelter life is a temporary home until their family chooses them. They’re like a breath of spring on a dreary day. Please contact Forsyth County Animal Control 336-703-3647, and ask for animal IDs: A287625, A287624 and A287623. Ink Lab Tattoo & Body Piercing Located in the heart of the Triad, Kernersville, NC, is Ink Lab Tattoo & Body Piercing. Owner and tattooist, Lucas Infield, has assembled a talented group of artists with over 35 years of combined experience. Established in 2009, Ink Lab is dedicated to maintaining their outstanding reputation of patience from consultation to completion, meticulous sterilization, high quality inks and body jewelry, and affordable rates in a friendly environment. Whether you are looking for a first tattoo, a cover up, reworking of an older one, or a larger, more detailed piece, they can help. Lucas, Jason, Jennifer, and Codie are happy to answer all of your questions and help you make good decisions that will lead to a lifetime of enjoyment. Everyone is welcome to bring examples of artwork that they are interested in, but an idea is really all it takes! Each tattoo is custom drawn and each booth is a private room. Lucas specializes in hand drawn Polynesian and tribal, Jason likes to do horror imagery, Jennifer specializes in Asian designs and por-

traiture, and Codie has his own style of new school artwork. They all specialize in crisp line work, color blending, shading, and lettering. From a small puppy paw tattoo to full sleeves and body suits, they can do it all! Pet portraits and paintings are available as well! When it comes to body piercing, the man to ask is Wade. He has been piercing for over 11 years. Besides using only hand polished surgical stainless steel body jewelry, he is honest and realistic about placement, and precise and quick with his piercings. Artists at Ink Lab also spend a lot of time with clients explaining after care, which leads to quicker healing times and better, long lasting tattoos and body piercings! Their portfolios are online at www.InkLabTattoo.com, and they are on Facebook. But, nothing beats a visit to meet them and see the difference for yourself! Consider this an invitation to drop by 210 Century Boulevard (right off West Main Street) in Kernersville, NC. They are open12-9 Tues—-Sat. Call 336-497-4998 for more information.

Titan Strong Again After Stem Cell Therapy Titan is an 8-year-old Rottie who needed to have bilateral hip replacement. His owner opted instead for regenerative stem cell therapy. Three weeks after Titan’s procedure, he was completely off all pain medications and is strong again. Degenerative arthritis and other conditions of the muscles and bones in dogs and cats can be treated using their own adipose derived stem cells. Using high tech in-house equipment, we surgically harvest fat cells, isolate the stem cells and inject them into affected joints, tendons or muscles—all on the same day. These stem cells heal the damaged tissues. Over 90% of treated pets have shown relief from chronic pain. Call today to see if your pet qualifies for this cutting edge rejuvenating treatment.
