Feral Cat Assistance Program Wild About Wild Cats!

H

ave you ever seen a cat or kitten sunning in a parking lot or behind a business and walked over thinking maybe this poor kitten was dumped or lost? Did the cat suddenly take one look at you and shoot off into the sunset? Congratulations, you have just met a feral cat. And that will be about as close as you generally will get to one! If by chance you got close enough to notice this cat has a notched or tipped ear, you have met a happy resident of a well managed feral cat colony. What exactly is a feral cat, a colony, and why do I care? Feral cats have a long history of coexisting with us humans. And by long, we

mean tens of thousands of years. As long as domesticated cats have been human companions, their counterparts in the wild have existed as well. A feral cat is not a stray, it is a cat generally born in the wild. While a feral can occasionally be tamed, most remain feral for life. Unfortunately, they are often misunderstood, mishandled and blamed for a lot of things they just don’t do. The facts are, these cats actually provide a service to the communities they live in by keeping rodent populations down. A feral cat or three is often a desirable addition to a barn, or, as recently featured in a news story in San Antonio, Texas, a country club golf course. A well managed colony will stabilize the feral cat population in that area by keeping new cats away. Colonies do not allow new residents in their territory. Since the cats in the program are spayed and neutered, there will be no new bundles of kitten joy to increase the population. Vaccinating, feeding and keeping the colony members healthy ensures that the cats stay put and happily do their job without disturbing Some ferals will allow caregivers to get very near and anyone. There is a pretty even pet them. (This photo and top photo are courtesy of good chance that you have Sally Atwood.)

passed by a colony in the Triad and had no idea it was there! Feral Cat Assistance Program was born in 1996 to improve the lives of these cats in the Triad area, and to educate people on the myths and facts surrounding these mysterious creatures. National and international animal groups such as the ASPCA and HSUS overwhelmingly support managing these colonies using a program called T-N-R (TrapNeuter-Return). This management method works by using dedicated volunteers who trap, neuter and return cats to the colony, vaccinated and healthy. Caregivers then visit the colony daily to feed and monitor the health and status of the colony. This is exactly what Feral Cat Assistance Program (FCAP) does in the Triad area for our local feral cats. The result? The Triad is home to many happy, healthy, well managed feral colonies. One Sunday a month, FCAP holds Spay Day where anywhere from 40-85 cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and treated for illness or injury. A team of volunteer veterinarians and general volunteers give generously of their time each month to make this happen for our local colonies. Cats are trapped by their caregivers, brought in early Sunday morning, and our team gets to work. Once the cats are sleeping peacefully under anesthesia, volunteers remove them

Cover Story from their traps and give them an overall examination to determine if any medical treatment is needed. The cats are then prepped for surgery. Once the spay or neuter surgery is completed, the vaccinations are given. Another team takes over and gives the cats a good grooming, flea control and any additional medical attention they require. Lastly, our recovery team keeps an eye on the cats as they wake up and wait for their caregivers to come pick them up. From the time the cats arrive until they leave, they are even given a little love, despite the fact that they are already asleep in preparation for their surgery. To see a Spay Day in action is to see a group of truly dedicated people who genuinely care for these animals. On almost every Saturday and Sunday at the PetSmart on Wendover Avenue, you will see our dedicated Cat’s Cradle Adoption Program volunteers showcasing our adoptable cats and explaining our program to anyone who stops by to listen. The adoption program places adoptable re-socialized feral cats and kittens into loving homes. Our foster parents take special care to evaluate their foster cats’ personalities in order to match a cat with a home that best fits. Our foster parents KNOW their cats! Consider adopting a social feral, and you will probably find a cat who appreciates their new home and family more than you can imagine. Our outreach program assists colony caregivers by offering any support they need to keep their colonies safe, healthy and well managed. Volunteers also attend local events

to spread the word about ferals, field phone calls and emails from the community regarding questions and needs, and work with local officials to keep colonies safe and managed. We have worked with animal control, sheriff’s departments and local governments to make sure that colonies are safe, secure and not considered a nuisance by anyone. FCAP does not have any paid staff; volunteers make all of this possible. Our volunteers range from veterinarians, Spay Day volunteer teams, Cats Cradle foster parents and babysitters, to PetSmart adoption center cage cleaners, cat trappers, colony caregivers and FCAP fundraising volunteers. FCAP is on the move and growing. We want to provide even more education and services. You can be a part of this dynamic group today! Join FCAP as a volunteer and help move us toward our goals of obtaining a larger building, increasing our array of services to the community and reaching out to further educate people. We want everyone to understand how these wild and wonderful

Above, a colony enjoying feeding time. Left, Lilly coming for her feeding. (These two photos are courtesy of Sally Atwood.) natural rodent control devices fit into the natural order of our communities. Are you ready to be wild about wild cats? If so, visit www.feralcatassistance.org, for more information on volunteering. Also, consider a donation to keep us moving forward. Our colony of volunteers is the only colony we are trying to grow, and we know we have a place to use your special skills. Join us and wild out!

Pet Urine in Carpets -

Revolutionary product eliminates odors!

Urine in carpeting is a severe problem that requires major restoration work, not just simple cleaning/treating. Now with the revolutionary P.U.R.T.® product your most severe urine damaged areas can be saved. http://www.chemdry.com/services/professional-carpet-cleaning/pet-urine-odor-removal

Urine in carpeting is a severe problem that requires major restoration work, not just simple cleaning and treating. But now with the revolutionary P.U.R.T.® product, your most severe urine damaged areas can be saved. Urine deposited on carpet penetrates the fibers and contaminates both the backing of the carpet and the flooring material below the carpet. Often, without your knowing, pets will urinate continually in the same general location. Urine odors can permeate from the floor, be it cement or wood, from the tack strip, and even from the framework of the house behind the walls. As the urine dries, the liquid evaporates but the urine crystals become even more concentrated and pungent. Simple cleaning will not remove this odor. Until recently, there was not a product available that was effective at removing urine odors. When P.U.R.T. contacts the source of the odor, it immediately begins a chemical reaction that destroys the urine odor.

How P.U.R.T. Works The source and severity of the odor are determined, carpet will be rinsed and extracted with a hot water rinse to remove the bulk of the urine crystals. In worst cases, the carpet is pulled back in suspected areas to reveal the extent of the damage.

25.00 OFF

$

P.U.R.T.® is specially formulated to eliminate urine odors. When P.U.R.T. contacts the source of the odor, it immediately begins a chemical reaction at the molecular level and destroys it…not by masking the odor –by breaking down the molecule and (up to 340 sq. ft.) destroying it forever!

Price is based on the basic cleaning process. Not valid with other offers.

Scarlett. My

Mocha is a beautiful girl, rescued from a feral colony several months ago. She is learning to trust people and was attached to her rescuer but will need time to feel safe and settle into a new home. She’s a very shy girl that would probably do best in a quiet household. She loves to have her head scritched and enjoys hiding under her blanket. For more information about Mocha e-mail Bev at hsac@netpath.net or call 336.438.2023. n

He’s a very easy cat but does require a low-ingredient diet, though his food can be purchased at area pet supply stores without a prescription. To inquire about Tinger, just e-mail Bev at hsac@netpath.net or call 336.438.2023 and leave a message that you would like more information. Mabel

Looking for a family seeking a fun and friendly challenge. I am house-broken and do my business outdoors, never inside. I adore being outside in a large fenced-in yard. Currently, I share the dog lot with other dogs but it took me a little while to adjust to the company. It’s ok for now...but at first it was a little overwhelming if you want to be top dog, or maybe share the glory with one other dog. Some of my passions are hiking, eating and lounging in the yard. I’m 8 years old and I love kids, although smaller ones sometimes get knocked over by my affection.

is a great dog, and would love to find her loving forever home. She is around 6 years old. She has a lovely gait, is very sweet, loves to play, and amuses herself very well!! She will play endlessly in a large, fenced yard. She would like to be an only pet, as she has a tendency to want to chase kitties. She is a bit on the small side for her breed, but that makes her a perfect size for an indoor companion! She’s up-to-date on vaccines, spayed, and ready to play with you!!!

Call 336-438-2023 and leave a message or email hsac@netpath.net to find out more about me. n

I found a turtle that has been run over but is not dead. What can I do?

ost veterinarians will help wildlife for free. At our hospital we M just ask that you bring them in and we will make every effort to help them. It is free, and we will try to help it. I mowed over a nest of baby bunnies. I can’t find the mother what should I do? Mother rabbits do not stay with the babies all day. They feed in the AM and PM. The best thing to do is to set the nest back as close to where you found it and leave it alone. Mom will come back for her babies.

We just cut a tree down and there was a nest of baby squirrels, what should we do? Most squirrels have a secondary nest. Try to arrange the nest so the mother can come back and move the babies. Leave them where you found them if possible. I found a snake that had been injured, but is not dead. What should I do? Unfortunately many people feel that the only good snake is a dead snake. Snakes help to keep down the population of rodents. Snakes would rather get away from you than to bite or challenge you. If you find an injured snake, wrap it in a sweater or a shirt, or a shopping bag and bring it to the clinic. It is free and we will try to help it.

Q A

I found a possum that has been injured. They carry rabies right?! Possums are not one of the carriers. Skunks, Raccoons and Foxes are the worst carriers. If you find an injured possum, put it in a carrier or a box or a pillow case and bring it to the clinic.

Q A

If possible, put the baby back in the nest, or place somewhere nearby. The mother will come to help and feed it.

I found a baby bird, I can see the nest and reach it. What should I do? Please put the baby back in the nest. The mother will come to help and feed it. If you cannot reach the nest, then place it somewhere safe near by. The mom will come and take care of it.

Xevon

Skipper. Meet

is a 5 year-old Husky mix and weighs about 60 lbs. She has stunning baby blue eyes and the softest white-gold fur! She is very loving and affectionate with her people. She is house, crate, and leash trained. She knows basic obedience commands and also loves to fetch. Xevon gets along with most other dogs after a proper introduction, but not all, so its best if she goes to a home where she is the only dog. Since she does not get along with cats, she cannot be placed in a home with any, no exceptions. We would prefer a fenced yard for her to run and play in safely, but this is not a requirement. If you feel you can give Xevon the loving, permanent home that she deserves, please come to our Saturday adoption fair to meet Xevon.

Skipper! He’s a Boxer/ Lab mix young male who loves to play. Skipper is a typical, curious puppy. He loves everyone he meets and can’t wait to find a home to call his own. We think Skipper will be approximately 35 - 40 lbs full grown. His date of birth is 9/3/11. If you are interested in giving Skipper the loving, permanent home that he deserves, please come to our Saturday adoption fair to meet Skipper.

Magnolia.

Peter

was named after Peter Cottontail since he was rescued on Good Friday! He has an abundance of love to give and tries to head butt everyone that reaches to pet him. Peter is still very much a kitten, around 7 months old. When rescued, he had lived his entire life outside. He is now loving the indoor life and never wants to be outside again. Peter has been neutered and declared healthy. He is fun and sweet all rolled up into a little black kitty. Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Peter. n

Easter Lily

If you love Siamese cats, female cats, and quiet cats, then Magnolia might be the cat for you! She is a sweet, quiet girl that was rescued on Good Friday 2012. She is around 2 years old with an estimated birthday of 1/19/10. Mags’ owner lost her job and was no longer able to care for 14 cats so ARFP was asked to take Mags. She has now been spayed and is up-to-date on her shots. Magnolia would do best in a quiet home. She has so much love to give and she is really hoping for someone to give that to. Call 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Magnolia. n

Quito

lived most of her life outdoors begging for human attention and food. She was born on approximately 4/8/10 and was pregnant when she was rescued on Good Friday. She is now loving her indoor life with all the food and love that she could ever want. Easter has been spayed and is up-to-date on her shots as well as negative for Feline Leukemia. This very sweet Easter Lily has enough affection to fill a home. Are you looking for a loving girl to call your own?

is a well mannered, eat him up by the spoonful, Chihuahua! He is 3 years old, weighs in at 7.6 lbs., has been neutered, and is very low maintenance. Just give him a loving lap to cuddle on, and he will be your friend forever. Quito gets along well with other dogs but really wants to be a person’s companion. He would love a quiet home with lots of soft places to sleep. Quito’s adoption fee is $150.

Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Quito. n

Monty. Mom

Dooley.

is a chocolate Spaniel mix weighing in at 23 lbs. Daddy was an unknown traveling salesman. This is Monty and that is about as much of his genealogy that we know. He was born on 2/4/12 and has 4 siblings, this we do know. Monty is like every puppy, he loves to play hard and sleep hard. Monty’s adoption fee is $150.

This precious flower child is our boy Dooley. Dooley gives a beautiful smile when he is glad to see you. His nose just wrinkles up and it is a hoot to see. Wish I could catch it with the camera. His sweet disposition will make him a great family dog. He plays well with children and other dogs too! One minute he will cuddle and sit by your side and the next he is outside sunbathing, chasing birds and happily entertaining himself. This smart boy is doing well with his house training and is fully crate trained. Dooley works hard for treats. He comes and sits nicely and will learn other tricks easily with consistent training. Call and ask for some play time or visit us at an adoption fair and spend some one-on-one time with the new love in your life...Mr. Dooley.

Jack

is so sweet! Approximately 1 to 2 years old, Jack has spent most of his life at the shelter. We’re not sure why this bundle of love has not found his forever home yet. Upon meeting Jack recently, he actually leaped from his cage and into my lap, then began purring non-stop. Jack has so much love to give some lucky person or family. He shares his cage nicely with his feline roomie and is just waiting for the day he can begin sharing his life with his new forever family! He’s already been neutered so he can go home with you today! Plus, he is temporarily only $20!!! A cheap price for a lot of

LOVING PET INN ADOPTIONS 336.393.0000 / www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org

Deelo

Markus

is a handsome, shy, 55 lb. 2 year old Shepherd mix who looks like he got caught in a high wind since one ear goes sideways across the top of his head! He is a very sweet, smart, naturally submissive and gentle fellow who was surrendered by an owner who was moving. He is used to being an only dog and enjoys playing with people and balls. Deelo tries to be a very good boy and consistently sits on command. He is housetrained and prefers a quiet, calm household. A six foot fenced yard is ideal.

is a very loving little five year old purebred Cocker Spaniel who was used to make handsome puppies by a backyard breeder. He is happy to be free from that life and adores being with his people and loves meeting new people. His tail is constantly wagging and he loves to follow you around wherever you go. Snuggles are great, too! This super sweet boy is very submissive to people and just wants to do the right thing. He enjoys hugs and is very good at the groomers. He prefers to be an only dog.

Deelo’s adoption donation is $100. Call Loving Pet Inn Adoptions at 393-0000 to give him a loving home. n

Rurun

Shirlee

is an 8 month old, 12 lb. joyful puppy who is very friendly, loves making new people friends and is wonderfully playful. This openhearted little boy loves to be kissed and hugged and tosses himself upside down for belly rubs when making new people friends. He’s very smart, can be delightfully silly, and is already housetrained. Rurun would prefer to be an only dog.

is one of those grateful dogs who appreciates every simple pleasure in life since she was so neglected in her prior home. She is a very calm, sweet, gentle and quiet lady who comes when she’s called and is such a good girl. She’s about 30 lbs. and 10 years old. Wouldn’t you like to adopt a deserving senior who spent too many years in a dreadful place and is so ready just to be loved and treated with kindness and tenderness?

Mindy.

Nutmeg

Sweet Mindy is a 10 year old who is so special that she’s been adopted twice - and then each time her precious elderly owners died! She is so nice, a gentle and good girl who is well house trained, nicely mannered in the house, comes when she called, is excellent on the leash, and bonds well with people. She adores people, is an easygoing & loving snuggler, and gets along well with other dogs, too.

looks like a blend of a Chessie and a Cocker Spaniel and is about 25 lbs. This tender young (about a year) girl with luxuriously soft fur was severely neglected in her prior life and is very shy and uncertain about everything. However, she is super sweet, calm and gentle and has tremendous potential. She needs a very patient, gentle and loving family who can teach her how wonderful life can be and build her confidence. A fenced yard is required.

Dice is

Smokie has a

a small little guy—he came to us from a feral momma cat, and has settled in quite nicely. He loves to play, and doesn’t quite realize how small he is! He also loves to snuggle all night long with his human mom and dad, who have to be careful not to roll over onto him. If you are looking to “change your luck” this year, why not try your hand with Dice?

long plush fur coat colored in a rich steel blue gray that makes his brilliant gold eyes shine. His wide open eyes give him an owlish appearance. He is very outgoing and playful and jumps for joy when the feather dancer is in action. Where there is smoke there’s fire, so take Smokie home and he’ll light up your life!

Kenya

has a beautiful and plush coat in warm, rich colors of chocolate and black with splashes of peach and white. Her peach colored face makes her look like a human in cat’s clothing. Slightly crossed eyes give her an endearing quality and she has a personality to match. If you like unique and exotic, take Kenya home! Contact us by email at cats@nccat.net or visit www.nccat.net. n

Blaze is so

Blondie. BIG, BLONDE, and BEAUTIFUL! Blondie has the longest, fluffiest champagne blonde fur we have ever seen and blonde eyes that match her coat. She looks bigger than she is because of her fur. She is as sweet as her fur is long and enjoys being combed, which is a good thing! For a true trophy cat that will grace your lap, take Blondie home! Contact us by email at cats@nccat.net or visit www.nccat.net. n

Curls

named because of the peach stripe down the side of her nose. She has an interesting story to tell. She was to be euthanized at the shelter because she was considered too scared and unadoptable, so NCCAT pulled her in the final hour. The very next day, her foster mom called and said she had just spent 10 minutes playing fetch with Blaze! She was only scared in the shelter, now she is happy and unafraid in her new loving foster home. She’ll play fetch at your home also.

. Unlike the little girl with the curl on her forehead, our Curls is always very good and never horrid. In fact she has the nicest personality of any cat we have ever met! Like her breed the American Curl, Curls ears really curl backwards making her looks quite angelic. We think it is good that she is white, since if she was black, she’d look devilish! For the sweetest cat with an unusual look, take Curls home!

RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com

Fiona originally

Ringo

came to Red Dog Farm after her owners could no longer care for her. She was adopted from us last year but had to come back when her adoptive Mom lost her job. Fiona is a love bug and comes when she is called. She loves to get brushed and doted on by her foster family. Fiona does occasionally get canned food as a treat but mostly eats dry food.

originally was rescued by the Guilford County Animal Shelter last summer after being found hog tied with a slit throat and tossed in a ditch to die. Fortunately he got the medical care he needed, a wonderful foster home that loves him dearly and became available for adoption with Red Dog Farm last fall. Why this sweet boy hasn’t met his forever family puzzles our volunteers each and every day. Ringo, about 11 months old now, is completely unfazed by his previous trauma, loves other dogs and is an all-around happy dog. All Ringo needs is to meet his forever family.

Oreo

Stewie

and his friend, Sten (not pictured) are young male pygmy goats who came to us from different situations but have become great friends in their foster home, so we would like to adopt them out together. Oreo came to us from a situation of neglect where he had lived on a chain and had been fed and cared for by the owner’s neighbors, who eventually bought him and brought him to us. Sten was originally found as a stray and his surrendering owners did a great job raising him but didn’t have room to get him a goat friend, which they knew he needed. Both have been vaccinated and castrated and are very friendly and outgoing with humans. They get along just fine with all of their foster farm animal siblings.

was surrendered to us when his owner could no longer care for him. He will be gelded as soon as he gains some weight and will then be adoptable. He is gaining weight nicely with all the good spring grass to eat. He is also shedding out and showing his appaloosa spots that run across the top of his back. Stewie has begun doing a little ground work and he is responding nicely. Overall Stewie is quite a character!

Caper is a large Jersey Wooly/Lop rabbit that came to us when her owners could no longer keep her. She is very sweet yet timid when she meets new people. She loves to be petted and given treats but is still very shy about being picked up. Caper has been an indoor single rabbit and would do best in a quiet home with no young children. Dakota came to us as an owner surrender when his owner fell upon hard times. He is an absolute gentleman of a horse and has some of the best ground manners we’ve ever seen. He loads, leads, stands for farrier, vet, fly spray, etc. Dakota’s owner told us he’d fox hunted and trail ridden extensively, and based upon his ground manners we believe it. He just spent the past month in training with the Salem College Equestrian Team and is doing very well under saddle. He will be adoptable soon. Dixie. Say hello to Miss Dixie Belle, a gorgeous, two-year old basset hound who will steal your heart! Dixie loves to run and play the day away with her foster sister, then spend the evening snuggling on the sofa with her favorite humans. Her impeccable house manners include using the backyard to do Carolina Basset Hound Rescue her business, going in a crate as necessary, and getting along well with her human and canine friends. She’s still getting the hang of walking on leash — she has a hard time containing her enthusiasm for all the sniffies and sights when she’s on a walk.

Austin or should we say Austin “Powers” because this 2 year old, 18 lb. youngster has some “powerful” looks! He is very tiny, has such a cute face and beautiful eyes. Austin has a puppy attitude and loves to play ball all the time. Austin is house, crate and leash trained. Boston Terrier Rescue He gets along great with other dogs and of NC avoids aggressive ones. Austin plays too rough to be around younger children and cats cause him to be anxious to the point that he throws-up! Austin loves car rides, belly rubs and his bed or the “people bed” when he is tired! He likes to snuggle and is looking for an active family that will have time to play with him and possibly offer him a canine sibling for companionship!

If you’re interested in adopting this sweet basset girl or CBHR’s other adoptable bassets, please contact rgering@triad.rr.com. n

Austin’s adoption fee is $350. Call 339-4368 if you are interested in adopting Austin. n

Winnie. After a long journey with many obstacles, sweet Winnie is finally ready for her forever family! After a lifetime of hardships, Four Seasons Boxer Rescue this girl is ready to see how much love is out there awaiting her! Lexi & Lady are a sweet pair of dachshunds in need of lots of love in their golden years. Surrendered to a local humane society by a breeder who was done using them for the sole purpose of producing puppies, they still have a lot of life left in them. Lady is a brindle around 13 years old and Lexi, a black & white, is about 10. Almost Home Dachshund Aside from the very minor health Rescue Society issues, these girls are very healthy (and very sweet) and all ready for the new home that we are sure awaits their love. Lady and Lexi have been together for a very long time and their bond is strong, so it is our hope to keep these girls together. Go online at www.almosthomerescue.org for more information. n

Mickey is a big spunky guy who came to ESRA as a Springer who had lived his whole life as an outdoor dog. He didn’t have many opportunities to practice the fine points of proper canine meeting rituals so he can be a little intimidating English Springer Spaniel around other dogs. It will probably be best that he find a home where he can be the only dog. He’s a big guy - not overweight for his frame, just solid and muscular - very handsome and has a rich, shiny black coat. He enjoys his daily walks and has pretty good leash-walking skills. He’s neutered, up-to-date on all his shots, microchipped, and heartworm negative. He is ready to find his Forever Home and a family to love. Contact ESRACarolinas@gmail.com or 336-223-6056 if you’d like to know more about Mickey. n

Success Story

BELLA

by Michelle Mitchell

M

y sweet Bella is a 3-year-old Australian Shepherd mix. And, yes, my husband and I rescued her. In all, Bella had four homes before she found her “forever home” with us, all in the first year of her life. When I consider the enormity of my Bella’s capacity to love, I can’t help but wonder if the sadness she felt after each rejection wasn’t equally as great, and my heart breaks at the very thought of it. I, for one, feel very sorry for all those who couldn’t see past her puppy antics and rambunctious teen years to now, because she truly is more precious than rubies, and nothing can be compared to her! On weekdays, my boss, Ken Sykes with Ken Sykes Photography, allows Bella to come to work with me. To justify her presence, he simply gave her the title of company mascot. The delivery guys know her by name and she knows which ones come bearing treats and which ones don’t. If you were to drop by the studio on any given day, you might find Bella hard at work. If only I had a picture of her the day she stood beside Ken, holding her toy duck in her mouth, all in an effort to distract the pretty little girl being photographed from her apprehension with the lights. And it worked. That same child’s mother told Ken that Bella was his best prop ever! Bella does love the children. It is as if she senses their energy when they walk through the door. Even still, she is ever so gentle, patient and kind. On weekends, Bella often goes to the Care Home with me to visit my grandfather, who is 94 years old and suffers from dementia. The moment our presence is made known there, the residents gather

around us, some pushing walkers, others in wheelchairs. It never ceases to amaze me how easily Bella elicits smiles, laughter and a twinkle in the eye of one who might not otherwise speak a word. I am convinced that she senses their frailty as she sits perfectly still while a multitude of aged hands and crooked fingers stroke and pet her. I have seen agitation and anxiety subside, all because of Bella’s presence. I am often asked how it is that Bella came about her manners or if she has been through some sort of obedience training. The answer to those questions are, I don’t know and no. To be perfectly honest, I believe that my Bella’s obedience is in direct correlation with her undying loyalty and her overwhelming expression of love and gratitude toward my husband and me for rescuing her. Having said that, I am reminded of this quote: “My goal in life is to be as good of a person as my dog already thinks I am.” ~ author unknown We should all strive for as much, don’t you think?

Zeva was only a couple of months old when she was pulled from the Wayne County Shelter. Since then, she has been in six different foster homes and been adopted out and returned twice for various reasons. Extremely affectionate and very easily trained, this girl enjoys meeting new people and tough chew toys. She is good with dogs and kids, is German Shepherd house trained, crate trained, knows sit, lay, Rescue & Adoptions shake and stay. She does have a little bit of an excited peeing issue but once she learns your voice, tone and intentions, the anxious peeing will dramatically decrease. A little planning goes a long way to help this girl with her little problem. A patient loving home that will work to build her confidence is just what this little lady needs and deserves. Zeva is hoping the third time’s the charm. Visit www.gsdrescue.org for more information. n

Wrangler is a 2 year old, very friendly male Golden mix with a light golden coat. He came in underweight, but is filling in nicely and is a handsome boy. He gets excited when first meeting you, but does settle down. He loves attention and is particularly fond of belly rubs. His foster family includes kids, other dogs and a cat. He does fine with them, although he would probably overwhelm a toddler or young cat if it runs. He walks well Triad Golden on a leash and is housebroken. Ernie. Hi, I’m Ernie! I am a super sweet boy, around 2 years old. Lab Rescue of NC (LRNC) took me and 8 other dogs when we were found living in bad conditions. I have a knee injury that requires surgery and LRNC is raising the funds to have it done as soon as possible. I don’t mind waiting, I have a clean kennel, a comfy bed, and lots of food and water. I love everyone I meet, especially the little folk (they are right at kissing level)! I’m looking for a home or a foster home that Lab Rescue of NC can help me recover from my knee surgery. If you have a place in your heart and home for a boy like me, please contact LRNC at www.labrescuenc.org or lrnc@labrescuenc.org. Make sure the message line has my name in it, I have an inside contact! n

Lacey. My racing name is Oshkosh Uplifted, but that’s too long. My friends call me Lacey. I have a beautiful, expressive face which shows that I am a champion! Well, at least I won some races in West Virginia, three years ago. I celebrated my fifth birthday in April, and am a sweet, friendly, and calm girl. Now I want to live with a loving family. Is your home right for me?

Pug Rescue of NC

Who's Walking Who?

Training Tips and Tools for Putting Fun and Control Back into The Walk By Linda Hofmann

I

f you were being videotaped on your next dog walk, would we see a calm smiling person beside a happy focused dog or would we see a lunge or drag scenario with lots of shouting and pulling? I will reveal training tips and tools appropriate for your dog to create a positive, fun walking experience for you both.

Age Appropriate Training Tools Select training tools that are appropriate for her age. Puppies eight weeks to four months can successfully use a simple training lead, head collars (Gentle Leaders®) or collar and 9” short leash and 4-6’ regular leash (not a retractable leash for training). Adolescents to adults, four to six months to over a year, can use harnesses (Freedom-No Pull Harness), in addition to simple training leads and head collars. Training Tool Tips Follow the directions with the head collar or harness for correct usage and adjustments for fit. Head Collars (Gentle Leaders®) are excellent in eliminating pulling and lunging motions. They can be used on puppies to adults. They work on a simple premise, where the nose goes, Here, Stormi demonstrates the Gentle Leader.

38

the body will follow. They demand minimal physical strength, so nearly everyone can use it, even kids. Harnesses (Freedom No Pull Harness) are recommended for dogs that are at least four to six months old. The idea behind this harness is, making not pulling more rewarding than pulling. It is available in two widths, 5/8” for smaller dogs and 1” for larger dogs. Leads - you can keep it simple with an inexpensive 50¢ slip lead looped over the head and high behind her ears. Light weight, slim show leads work well also. They are slim cut, leather leashes with a loop at the end, like the ones used in dog shows. Conditioning for Acceptance Now that you have selected the training tools, it is time to introduce them to your dog. Conditioning is the process of making the unnatural feel natural. After a short time, with deliberate steps, she will tolerate it. Do not give in to bad behavior. When she realizes she can’t get the collar or harness off (with proper adjustment), she will forget about it. Introduce the look of the collar, lead or harness 2 times a day for 2-3 days by placing them in the middle of the room with a treat in the middle of it. Allow her to move toward the harness, leash or lead on her own and explore it. You can also hold a treat and transfer the scent onto them by rubbing your hand on them. Introduce the feel of the lead, collar or harness several times a day for 2-3 days before you actually take a walk with her in it. Place the collar or harness on her and let her wear it for a while. How long you leave the collar or harness on (under supervision) depends on her nature. Calm, well behaved dogs, require less time. If she resists it, mouths it or rolls on it, keep it on her longer. She needs extra time to tolerate it. Always remove it at night or when you are away. When using a simple lead, take the lead and lightly touch it to her forehead and nose. Allow her to feel relaxed and comfortable. Make a large loop, 1 and ½ times the size of her head. Hold the loop in front of her head and have a treat on the other side, to encourage her to put her head through the loop. Gently tighten the lead, high behind the ears.

May 2012 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

Remember to reward her with touch, verbal praise and small treat rewards each time. Let’s Go for a Training Walk After the conditioning acceptance of your training tools, you and your pet are ready for the training walk. Choose a relatively quiet area to start your training walk. Begin the walk with her in a calm, submissive behavior on your left side. She should stay beside you. You should be the first out the door, to establish who the leader is. Hold the leash in an easy, relaxed manner down by your side. Stand erect with your head high. Pull the leash forward lightly then release the tension. Keep the tension loose at all times. If her focus starts to wander or she balks at moving forward, use a treat or scented toy to engage her nose and attention. When you have redirected her attention, continue to move forward. If she becomes distracted by other people or dogs, give her a corrective pull slightly on the leash to say “Keep walking”. If necessary, stop walking, and place her with her back toward the distraction and make eye contact with her in a calm, assertive manner. Wait until she returns to a calm, submissive behavior before you continue to walk again. On returning home, you should walk through the threshold first, then her. Remember you are the leader. Remain calm and assertive just like her mother did. Keep the training walks short at first, 10-15 minutes. Provide lots of touch and verbal praise. End each training walk session with an off leash play for fun time. Gradually lengthen the training sessions when you see her remain totally relaxed and calm, yet still engaged. By understanding your pet’s needs, selecting the appropriate training tools, allowing time for conditioning acceptance and becoming a calm but assertive leader, you will find the enjoyment of walking together. Linda Hofmann has been the owner of Mt. Tabor Boarding & Grooming for 11 years. Stormi Nance is the dog trainer there and handles the classes. They are members of Association of Pet and Dog Trainers (APDT).

Penny. I’m Penny and I am a very friendly stray that was living in a feral cat colony. We were fortunate to have a dedicated Malcom’s Manor caretaker who fed and watered us daily; however, someone wasn’t pleased we were there and called Animal Contol. Unfortunately, most of my friends were euthanized because they were feral and viewed as not “adoptable”. I was friendly and was given a few extra days which allowed my foster parent to come and get me out of there! I’m a beautiful, sweet girl approximately 4-5 yrs old. I’m spayed, FIV/Felv negative and up-to-date on shots. My adoption fee is $50. For more information please send an email to marianne@malcolmsmanor.com. n

Becca is a little brown tabby girl born about February 2009. She has a cute little bobtail, which appears to be the result of an injury sometime in her past rather than her breed. Becca loves people, likes to cuddle close and be petted, and doesn’t mind being kissed on the nose. But, Becca doesn’t like Tailless Cat Rescue other animals so she needs a home where she will be the only furkid. She is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped and is FeLV/FIV negative. For more information visit www.taillesscatrescue.com or send an e-mail to taillesscatrescue@hotmail.com. n

My name is Sassy! Yes I used to live up to my name, but now I just like to lay in your lap and give you kisses! I am fully vetted, house trained and though I am told I am 10 years old I sure don’t feel like it. But, I am ready for a relaxing life of a rocking chair front porch and good ole’ sweet tea afternoons! If you’re looking for some good company that will listen to all your ideas and opinions, and agree with you on most, I’m your girl! Take me home and I’ll show you what real friendship is all about.

Pin. She’s a little shy around men and strangers. Those of us at the shelter that have earned her trust are all in love with her. She is a sassy little thing that loves to play and eat treats. She has been known to steal a french fry or two when she thinks no one is looking. She walks well on a leash and weighs around 20 lbs. Lady D needs a home where she is the only dog and would do best in a home without young children.
