Preston. Hello, my name is Preston and I am a male Hound and Rottweiler mix. My estimated date of birth is 03/17/2014. I am an energetic and friendly guy. I am sweet and very playful. Some folks say I have a great personality, I’m not sure what that means, but I did check my doggie dictionary and looked up “home,” so I do know what that means! I’d love to find one.

If you are interested in adopting me, fill out an adoption application at www.davienchumane.org. n Red is a 3 year old boy with lots of puppy energy! He loves to play with all sorts of toys, larger dogs, and his humans. Because he has a lot of energy, he would do best in a home with plenty of structure and guidance. He has not yet been cat-tested, but is housebroken and crate-trained. Red enjoys Merit Pit Bull hiking, doggie play groups, and learning new things. Red captured our hearts and he is sure to capture yours.

imagine protecting all your pets this summer

What a Wonderful Time of Year, But be Aware of the Hazards…

W

ell, May is finally here and it’s time to start going on vacation. It’s going to get warmer and all of us will have to be wary of UV rays. Yes, that goes for pets also. The sun can cause skin cancer in animals just like it does for humans. Light colored dogs, cats, horses…well, you get the picture, are as susceptible to the burn and skin trauma of UV as we are. Dogs that love to lay in the sun can get some pretty bad issues with skin cancer, the belly area is often thin skinned without much fur. White faced animals can get major issues, particularly around the nose area where there is very little fur. What can you do? Do not cut their hair, this is a protection for their skin. It actually helps to keep them cooler. You can put up a nice plastic pool for them. Many dogs love to swim and wallow, just try to keep it in the shade. You can use SPF 50, waterproof, on their noses and areas with no hair, particularly if you are at the lake, the beach or hiking. Also make sure you take umbrellas and lots of water for them. Remember their body temperature is higher than ours. They can suffer from heat stroke much faster than we will, and often owners can’t tell that their pet is too hot until it is too late. If you like to do a lot of hiking and outdoors activity, either do it early 7-10am or later 4-9pm, that way the UV rays are not at their most potent. You should not lay out in the sun either, but if that is your plan, do not take your pet with you. They do not need that much and that strong a dose of sunlight. If you are starting to move your birds, reptiles or rabbits outdoors, make sure that there is plenty of shade at all times of the

day. Check the area out in the morning, middle part of the day and in the afternoon. Sometimes we do not notice heavy sunlight if you are not watching during a 24 hour period. Always make sure they have plenty of water, and particularly for rabbits that do not like it hot, maybe a fan to ensure that there is always a breeze. Don’t forget, they count on us to take care of them and ensure their safety. I know I do not need to remind everyone of this, but DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS IN THE CAR…the temperature rises between 10-20 degrees, IT WILL KILL YOUR PET…also it is against the law. Anyhow, have a great spring and summer and as always keep track of your pets. If you need a place to leave them for the day, the weekend or the week, we provide both day care and boarding. Call us and enroll your baby in Summer Camp now…

Cover Story

Guilford County Animal Services‌

A new beginning. By Logan Rustan

A

ugust 17, 2015, the shelter animals of Guilford County were brought to the attention of the county commissioners by way of hardship and neglect. On this day the Guilford County government took back management of the county shelter for the first time in over 20 years. Although sad and unfortunate for the animals that suffered at all, the shelter has now been placed in the hands of the County with the hopes of the animals being put first as they should be. On August 17, 2015, Deputy County manager Grier, Lt. Martin with the sheriff’s department, and Logan Rustan, the Guilford County Animal Control Manager were all three placed as interim leaders. Deputy Grier as the Interim Director, Lt. Martin as the Operations Manager, and Logan Rustan as the Animal Welfare Manager utilized these positions to oversee the shelter and keep it open and running while changes started to take place. When the county took over, the decision was made to close the shelter for one week to assess the situation at hand and determine what steps we would initiate to move forward. The remaining shelter staff were individually evaluated. Not all staff members were

Lacy 12

Scout retained, and those that were continue to contribute to the positive changes and progression of the new shelter. During the week the shelter was closed, assistance was volunteered for medical evaluation and care for the animals. Rescue organizations were contacted and asked to come in and pull animals for the first time. The shelter cleaning staff was properly educated on how to provide a cleaner, safer, better smelling atmosphere for the animals, staff and visitors. In addition to the shelter, Guilford County also made the decision to merge the animal control department with the shelter making the new Guilford County Animal Services department. In December, Logan Rustan was named the new Director of Guilford County Animal Services and has continued to make changes every day. Director Rustan hired a full time veterinarian shortly after becoming the director and has recently filled the Animal Operations Manager position. The shelter now has an emergency contract with Happy Tails Emergency Clinic to provide care for injured and sick animal emergencies that animal control responds to after hours. This is a service that was never available before. There are also plans to build a new animal shelter for Guilford County and discussions for location and size have been underway for months now. The new animal services department has a Facebook page now and a website under the county where pictures of adoptable animals are placed for the community: www.facebook.com/GCAS2015 (Facebook) and www.myguilford.com/animal-shelter (website). Since the county took over and opened the door to rescues, 1766

animals have been adopted, 2946 animals have been transferred to rescue, and 540 animals have been returned to their owners. All animals at the shelter receive full time veterinary care by Dr. Ashley Spruill and the veterinary technician team; a service that was not previously available. Recently the county commissioners approved new policies and procedures for the shelter, which includes the removal of a ban on

certain breeds from being placed up for adoption. Now every animal will have the opportunity to find a new home and have a happy life. We are still making changes every day that will take time, and all we ask is that our community be patient with us and help us make our shelter one of the best in North Carolina. We appreciate the support of our community members, volunteers, fosters, and staff and look forward to continuing on this journey together.

PHYSICAL REHABILITATION Let’s keep your pet moving!

Our pets are members of the family! Veterinary medical care often mirrors our own healthcare. We expect the same level of treatment for our fur-babies that we would receive. Physical rehabilitation or physical therapy is commonplace in human medicine - and it is becoming more common for our animal companions too! Most of us have had physical therapy (or know someone that has!). It is prescribed after an injury or surgery, for treatment of a chronic condition like arthritis, to manage our weight or to condition our bodies for athletics. It can be helpful for our pets for many of the same reasons! Benefits, for any of us, include speeding recovery, decreasing pain, improving strength, flexibility and mobility, or preventing new injury - ultimately improving quality of life! I have experienced physical rehabilitation from both personal and professional perspectives! My very first rehabilitation case in 2005 was my own dog. Bosco was an 85 lb. Doberman that ruptured a disc in his back and was unable to walk. I understand first-hand what is required in the care of a “downed” pet. But I also got to see the positive effects of physical rehabilitation - he had a full recovery of hindlimb function after his surgery. This spurred my desire to help other pets even more! In physical rehabilitation, we use many of the same techniques that are utilized in human physical therapy. The more common modalities include: thermotherapy (heat/cold), massage, hydrotherapy, therapeutic exercise, acupuncture, therapeutic laser, electrical stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound and manual therapy. An individualized assessment and treatment plan is developed for each pet. The type of therapy used is determined by that animal’s needs and issues. It is sometimes difficult to see our fur-babies getting older. Most will show some signs of osteoarthritis, from the wear and tear of life. They may be moving slower and acting uncomfortable. Physical rehabilitation can be a nice addition to the regimen of appropriate weight, supplements and medication. Proper exercise can assist in building and maintaining muscle strength. Muscles keep the joints from hurting as much. So, if we get your pet stronger, it will be easier to

“keep them moving”! The underwater treadmill is one type of exercise that can give your pet a more comfortable and effective workout session. The water provides support for weakened pets, keeps them from experiencing excessively “pounding” joints, helps build strength and, if needed, helps them to lose weight. Acupuncture and laser are other modalities that can be helpful for pain management. Getting your pet stronger and feeling less pain will get them back to the normal activities of life - taking walks, playing with toys, etc. Obesity is an epidemic in our modern world! It is estimated that between 30-60% of pets are overweight. We have research showing that pets that are overweight have an earlier onset of arthritis symptoms and shortened life spans. Also, we have learned that fat is a metabolically active tissue - releasing detrimental hormones into our bodies. We need to keep in mind that our pets are not built like us and additional weight impacts them more dramatically. With their horizontal body structure, their joints and back are more easily affected by extra weight - making it harder to get around. Weight loss is usually more effective with a combination of calorie reduction and exercise. With some pets it can be challenging to exercise, especially if they have other health issues. Rehab can help to “jump start” a weight loss program and get your furry companion to move around more. Happier dogs usually wag their tails more - and who doesn’t love to see that! Some of the most dramatic cases of recovery are with neurologic patients. These are commonly long-backed dogs that have intervertebral disc disease (IVDD or herniated disc) - that may or may not have had surgery, depending on symptoms. Or those pets suffering a fibrocartilagenous embolism (FCE or spinal cord stroke). Many of these fur-babies have difficulty or are unable to walk. Their therapy involves multiple modalities and medication to help regain function and strength. Owners play a very important role in helping their pet recover. It is so gratifying for me to help get a beloved companion that can’t move back to walking again! Pets that have had some type of orthopedic injury, surgery or deformity (e.g., hip dysplasia) can benefit too! If our pets are unable to use their bodies correctly, they are not bearing weight properly. This sets them up to lose muscle mass and strength. Also, this puts an abnormal strain on other parts of the body. Exercises are targeted to promote use and strength of the affected areas. We, as veterinary professionals, recognize that often crate rest alone does not get our furry friends back to full function. Physical rehab can provide a nice, controlled energy outlet - especially useful for young and active dogs! A special subset of dogs that can take advantage of physical rehabilitation are working and athletic dogs. These pets are already very active but many can benefit from additional strength training to maximize their ability to perform at an optimal level and to prevent injury. If injury does occur, rehab may be necessary to return them back to peak performance. They are generally really fun patients to deal with because of their high desire to work! Our pets are such an important and vital part of our lives! They deserve the best care available. Almost all pets can benefit from physical rehabilitation at some point during their lives. The “use it or lose it” principle applies to both humans and our animal companions. Keeping our pets moving helps them to be stronger and healthier and hopefully, live longer lives. As rehabilitation specialists, we are here to help you to restore and maintain your pet’s mobility, fitness and comfort - resulting in your fur-baby having the longest, best life possible!

Misty (animal number 31230123) is an adult female domestic short hair mix. She is approximately 3 years old. She came to us as an abandoned stray at the beginning of Yadkin County Animal Shelter April. Her adoption fee is $85 and includes her spay, her initial rabies vaccine (one year) and an initial feline combo vaccine.

Meet Maverick. Say hello to our Maverick! He came to us at about 12 weeks old from one of the local shelters. He was always a good looking puppy, but at just over 2 years old now we had no idea how good looking this guy would grow up to be! Maverick has a wonderful personality and is good with kids and other dogs.

For more information about Misty or other animals available at the Yadkin County Animal Shelter, please call (336) 677-2500 or come and visit us at 1027 Speaks Street, Yadkinville, NC 27055. n

Ribbons. Meet Ribbons! This special girl is 10 months old and weighs 38 lbs. She loves people and other dogs! Ribbons is likely a mix of Boxer or Pointer, but we don’t really know. She has a few special needs because she is deaf, but she is currently learning sign language and doing well. Ribbons would do best with a very active owner who is willing to continue training with her.

Melvin loves swing, jazz and big band music; and he loves to do the Bunny Hop, of course! On week ends, Melvin enjoys performing classical ballet for his buddies at the shelter. He’s hoping to get accepted into the Bolshoi Ballet. But if that doesn’t work out, he’d be happy performing in a local forever home. Looking for a hopping good time with a new friend? Dudley. Meet Mr.

Dryden.

It looks like Dryden was picked up by a giant with inky fingers. This little boy has a line of black spots running down one side of his body. He’s always up for petting, climbing over furniture, and playing with toys. Dryden was born 2/10/2016 and is current on his shots for his age.

affectionate Dudley! If ever anyone wanted a people dog this is it! Super people-oriented! Dudley gets along well with other dogs. He is well-mannered, however, not 100% house-trained...yet. His foster mom is working diligently on this. He is very good in his crate and loves to play. Dudley is a bouncy, happy, guy and is agreeable to most anything. He is two years old and has been neutered, is on heartworm preventative, and up-to-date on shots. This is a special boy!

Zachary.

Yeti.

Not sure what he is yet. He came to the Animal Rescue and Foster Program from a Chihuahua hoarding situation below Charlotte. He was 2-3 weeks old and we were told that his mom was a Terrier mix. Fast forward 3-4 weeks and this is what we have. White and fuzzy. So very cute and full of mischief and personality.

Born February 2013, this handsome man has lived a rough life. He was born into a hoarding situation where he was banned to backyard living. Thanks to animal control and area rescue groups, Zachary was given a second chance at the good life. Zachary, weighing 7.3 pounds, has now been neutered, is up-to-date on his shots, and only steps outside for potty and play time. Zachary gets along with all animals, and prefers to be in the lap of any human that he encounters. Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n

Oden

is a one year-old Boxer/ Hound mix who is ready to get a chance at the life he’s been dreaming about. Such a happy and energetic boy, Oden’s enthusiasm has a way spreading to everyone around him. He does well with other dogs and loves people. He is smart and playful and would be a great first dog for someone just starting out. Oden enjoys the best of both worlds, walks and play time, along with snuggle time. He is neutered, upto-date on vaccines and microchipped. If you are looking for a young, energetic companion, then Oden is your match! Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 to meet Oden today. n

Buttercup.

This beautiful black and tan dog has quickly become a staff favorite due to her gentle and affectionate nature and she is loving all the attention! From taking naps in the field with volunteers to getting belly rubs and treats, Buttercup is enjoying life and looking forward to her new adventure and new home! She is spayed, up-todate on vaccines and microchipped. Buttercup also has a great personality and gets along with other dogs. She would fit well with a family, couple or single person. Buttercup wants a home with a good level of activity and one that would give her lots of attention because she can’t live without her belly rubs! If Buttercup sounds like the dog for you, please call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222. n

Butters.

Fay.

Full of curiosity, hugs and kisses, Fay knows how to sneak up on you and steal your heart. At about six years old, Fay was surrendered by her family simply because they were moving. One would think this adorable Boxer mix would be sad, but not sweet Fay. Just the opposite! Fay is affectionate and full of life. She loves people and likes other dogs. She is smart, playful and would take to training well. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. Beautiful inside and out, Fay will have you wrapped around her paw before you can blink! If you are looking for a charmer and a best friend, then look no further because Fay is the match for you! Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Marmalade has a very expression-filled face with orange all around his little pink nose, and big green eyes that seem curious about the world around him. Calm and quiet, he likes to watch all the activity going on but don’t let his calm personality fool you. Marmalade has lots of curiosity and playfulness hiding behind that cute little face. He likes to romp and play with other cats but he also enjoys a hearty meal and a good soft spot for napping! Being a little older he would probably be more comfortable in a home without small children and one that had a calm and relaxed environment. He is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. If you think you have a space in your heart big enough for Marmalade, then call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222. n

28

Such a tiny little cat, it is hard to believe that Butters is the mother of seven baby kittens! With her petite size she seems to be a baby herself, but now that she is fixed, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped, this little one can relax and look forward to the easy life. Now she has the time to spend napping in the sun and learning what the word play means. This sweet, little, soft gray tabby is sure to find her way into even the coldest of hearts. Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 to find out how to meet this sweetie so she can conquer your heart too! n

Patches.

When Patches first arrived we soon realized he didn’t feel well. Turns out he suffered from reoccurring urinary tract infections. Now, after surgery and a new diet, Patches is a brand new cat! He is starting to feel better and is beginning to explore his new environment. He is now talkative and open to loving head rubs from admirers. Patches is around four years old and has white fur with patches of black. Most notable is the black patch to the right side of his nose. He is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped. Patches is still a young kitty with lots of life and love that he’s willing to share. He just needs a special purr-son who is kind and loving and who understands just how special he is! Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Tiko is a darling 3 year old 11 pound Pomeranian. He is a beautiful lavender color. Tiko is a true lap dog and will be your little shadow. He is a very laid back Pomeranian and he rarely barks. Milo. This dignified sir is a BoxerBulldog cross who is a total couch potato! Milo is looking for a quiet, low-energy, stable household to where he can “retire” during his golden years. Being 8 years old and part Bulldog, he is a little more set in his ways than some and would do best with a dog savvy family where he could be an only pet. Milo has been described as a really cool guy whose favorite hobbies include snuggling on the couch and watching Netflix!

Mina would make a fantastic addition to a quiet household. This super sweet but shy 2 year old female is great with other dogs and with cats, but takes some time with people she doesn’t know. But the time would be well worth it! You would get a very loving and loyal Juliet’s House Rescue companion. Mina is about 38 pounds and is probably a Lab/Hound/Boxer mix. Wow! The race track sure gave me the wrong name. I am the friendliest, happiest, lovingest pup you could imagine. My friends call me Judi. I am mischievous with the other girls in my group, and keep them all running and playing. I would rather not live with a cat, but will love you eternally if you are my forever family.

Betsy.

My name is Betsy. My owner passed away leaving me homeless. I get along with everyone, even dogs. I am extremely loving and will be a wonderful companion. I was born in April of 2015. I have been spayed, am current on my shots, and tested negative for FeLV and FIV. You can meet and visit with me and many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Preston.

I was rescued from a farm where all my littermates were killed by coyotes. I get along with other cats and dogs. I have never been around children. I was born in October of 2009, have been neutered and am upto-date on shots. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Sammy

is a sweet loving classic tabby. His owner had gone to a nursing home and could no longer care for Sammy. Sammy has had a hard time adjusting to life in a rescue and really needs to find a kind and loving forever home. He is terrified of life at the AARF house and our fosters are full. He is in a temporary home for a few days and as you can see he adapts pretty quickly to a quiet home. He gets along with other cats and has a sweet disposition and loves to play and snuggle. He really likes women but seems fearful of men and a fellow would need to be kind and patient. Sammy is quite trusting and loving and would eventually come around. If you can foster Sammy or give Sammy a forever home, please email daubertla@aol.com. He is a wonderful cat who deserves a chance at a happy life. n

Whitman

is a 6 to 7 year old neutered black DSH... My brothers and I were confiscated due to our past owner’s cruelty. We were skinny and flea ridden but over the past few months nursed back to health. I’m the lovingly chubby one who has definitely made up for lost time while finally having consistent access to food. I love to cuddle and watch TV and frustratingly chase around the mysterious red light that shows up on the walls and floors when my foster parents are around. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Rachel

Sydney

is a very sweet ragdoll mix who loves people and enjoys being the center of attention. She enjoys being held and loves to lay in a lap. Sydney is a wonderful companion and will sometimes chat with you if you talk to her. She does fine with older children and adults. She has lived with other cats but would like to go to a home where she will be treated as the princess she is sure she is. She was born in 2007 and is declawed. She is spayed and current on shots. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

June is a beautiful 5-6 year old lady who was surrendered to the Iredell Animal Control along with 2 companion dogs because her owner was to ill to care for them anymore. Jackson. My name is Jackson. I was born outside to a feral mom about 10 months ago. My mom and litter mates disappeared. Since then I’ve lived in the woods behind the house of the lady who had me neutered, vaccinated, and tested. I was eartipped as a kitten because they weren’t sure how friendly I’d be. Well, I’ve shown them how friendly a cat can be! I love everybody, including the dog of the house. When I see her in the yard, I run up and head-bop her. But now a neighbor of the person who feeds me doesn’t like paw prints on her car or a brown trail through her grass where I travel from the woods to the porch to eat and wants me gone. So I need a new home. I’m now in a foster home and adjusted to living indoors in the blink of an eye!” Jackson is a long and lean handsome black cat with a triangular-shaped face and huge yellow-green eyes like marbles.

Sadie.

Betty White.

Hi! I’m Sadie. I’m an Australian Shepherd mix and a little over a year old. I love attention and tummy rubs. I won’t hesitate to crawl up into your lap for some cuddle time. I am house and crate-trained and currently learning other commands to help me be a better companion for my furever home! I am full of energy and would do well with a home that has a fenced in yard. I do well with other dogs and currently have two foster brothers that I play with. My mom says I’m very sweet and doing great for the big puppy that I am! I’d love to meet you and be a part of your family!

Our little Betty White hasn’t had an easy life but she is still a sweet and loving older gal who is also very smart. She can hear fairly well (a lot better than she can see) and is doing well walking on a leash, allowing her foster mom to lead her around hazards. We think she would be better suited in a house with no other dogs or possibly one other canine companion who would be content to just let her be. She is, however, quite friendly with felines and enjoys their company! We’d love for this senior to find a forever home to dote on her as she deserves!

Midnight

is a medium sized Australian Shepherd mix who parties best with grown ups! This handsome five year old is neutered and up-to-date on vaccines. He does have quite a bit of energy and is most content working outside, herding his humans into the yard and feeling the cool breeze ruffling through his shiny, black fur. He may suffer from a bit of separation anxiety but that’s only because he’d prefer to spend as much time as possible hanging out with his family- hiking, running and just burning off that extra energy! Marty insists on a cat-free home, please...they’re too much of a curious distraction for this boy! If you love sharing the outdoors with a four-legged partner, Marty may just be the dog for you!

is a shorthaired, black cat with beautiful yellow-green eyes. He can be a little unsure of humans at first, but once he gets used to you, he craves your attention. He’s very sweet, playful and just loves to purr! Midnight generally follows another cat’s cues and it would be best for him to be adopted into a home with another feline companion. This handsome boy has been waiting for his forever family for quite some time...could yours be the one?!

Ike is 9 years old and a very happy dog who loves to romp and play with toys. At the shelter, he was an owner surrender. Emaciated and subdued when he came into rescue, he has since put on weight and is now galloping around with a toy in his mouth. Ike likes the other dogs in his foster home but does not play Chihuahua Rescue with them. He loves to snuggle under a blanket in a dog bed or on his foster Mom’s lap. When strangers visit he is stand-offish at first, but he does warm up to them. Ike stays in an Ex-Pen during the day and holds his business while his foster mom works. He sleeps in his dog bed at night but would probably love to sleep in the bed with his “forever” human when he finds him or her. Ike is a delightful dog that has a lot to give. He is a joy to have around and is neutered, crate-trained and up-to-date on shots.

Sandy is a 3 year old Jack Russell Terrier mix. She is a sweet girl who likes being held and loved on, but needs to be in a home without children. Sandy weighs about 25 lbs., is spayed, current on her vaccinations and available for $90.

Harrison is just a wee little pup of 10-12 weeks who is way too young to be hitchhiking on Hwy 220. Lucky for him a nice THGF volunteer picked him up and brought him to safety. We searched for his owners but no one claimed this little bundle of cuteness! Harrison weighs about 5-6 pounds now and we estimate him to be on the medium size. He is possibly a Corgi mix as our best guess. Harrison is house and crate-trained. He does well with other dogs, loves children but is best suited in a cat free zone!

Sadie is a 6 year old, 10 lb wire-haired Terrier. She is a sweet, mature dog that is already house-trained. Sadie loves to walk and hopes her new owner will walk her 2 to 3 times a day. Sadie will happily approach you with a wagging tail when she wants love. If you sit on the floor with her, she will crawl onto your lap to nuzzle. She also loves to sit in the sun. Sadie is spayed and has a microchip. She has had all of her shots updated as well as a recent dental. Sadie is a wonderful healthy little Yorkie girl!

Training Your Pet

Get to Know Your Dog as Well as He Knows You: The Benefits of Bonding

C

By Mary Vanderlinden

an your dog sit, stay, give a high-five, shake, rollover or any other action based on your command? If you answered “Yes” to these questions then congratulations, you have developed rapport with your four-legged friend! As a trainer, I often hear, “I wish my dog could do all of those things!” My answer is your dog can! Regardless of the breed, dogs can do all of the things listed above and so much more. How? The key is to build a strong bond with your dog by fostering his / her trust, respect and understanding. It’s important to realize that your dog naturally wants to be with you. This is a construct that has lasted for more than 30,000 years when human first met canine and the symbiotic connection began. As the relationship fostered and man evolved, so did the dog! To become the faithful friend we know and love, he observed us, learned our routines and our moods. Dogs continue to watch us closely today, and in fact you can bet your dog knows more about you than you know about him! So, developing a relationship must begin with you!

trust Dogs are smarter than we often give them credit and they do know when they are treated kindly and taken care of. This means offering a balanced diet, clean drinking water and regular veterinarian checkups is a must. Along with these physical needs, you must attend to your dog’s mental state. Giving him / her quality time walking and exercising should become a daily routine, and such activities create a deeper friendship. Here’s a great tip: try sitting on the floor with your dog in or near his / her space and gently playing with a ball or toy. Your dog will love this intimate interaction and special attention.

respect Dogs want a leader and that should be you. Set boundaries for your dog such as where they can sit or lay. As a leader, you must also instill what behaviors are or are not acceptable and most importantly be consistent: this will result in your dog’s respect for you as master. For example, if you don’t want Scout to jump on your bed then do not ever allow him in that space. As you set boundaries your dog will begin to understand your expectations.

understanding Become observant of your dog and try to understand what he / she is communicating to you. For example, does your dog react differently to other canines in the neighborhood? Is he happy to see the Basset Hound but ready to attack the Husky? Investigate and see if you can

44

Mary with her best friend, Duma. figure out what is happening - is there a height or size issue? Is the Husky taking a threatening posture? Is this a matter of territory and dominance? Investigate, analyze and take a pro-active approach so that your dog will become a well-rounded and respected citizen. know your breed If you have a mixed breed, or what is now termed an All-American, then know the makeup of your canine friend. Dogs are interesting because they retain their historical nature and by instinct do what they were bred to do! One of my favorite stories is when working with a young couple with a Welsh Corgi. During a training session they exclaimed, “Bentley barks a lot and he has started to nip the back of my legs.” Indeed - Bentley is a herder and he is simply engaging in what comes natural to him. You can and should use your dog’s traits and instincts in training.

So, back to the question about training your dog to sit, stay, rollover, etc. When embarking on the journey to train our dog, most often we think about items needed such as a leash, collar and treats. Unfortunately, many people leave out the most important element which is creating a bond through trust, respect and understanding. Here are a few last thoughts to close this article — (1) You must work on creating a bond with your dog each and every day. (2) Building a bond takes time. Once established you will find that training sessions will greatly improve, your dog will learn more quickly, and you will reap the rewards! Mary Vanderlinden is an American Kennel Club (AKC) certified trainer and evaluator, and a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, the Carolina Dog Training Club, and Pet Partners. Mary works with all dog breeds (purebred and mixed). Her teaching philosophy is to use only positive reinforcement in building a rapport between dog and owner / handler. Are All Natural Pet Foods Really

—All Natural??? by Michael Rosenstock - Finest Fetch

I

n the last 25 years pets have evolved and become true members of our families. With this trend we, the parents, have become much more conscious of what we feed our “children.” So the question becomes; “Do you really know what you are feeding your pets?” Most consumers are drawn in by promises of a “Complete Meal” with “All Natural” or “Organic” ingredients. These terms give the consumer reassurance that the “complete meal” they are serving will help to nourish and sustain their pet in a healthy manner. Most Pet Foods Carry the Label “Complete Meal” This means that it meets or exceeds all of the nutritional requirements as defined by AAFCO (Association of Animal Feed Control). Virtually every “complete meal” pet food contains dietary supplements in order to meet those requirements. It’s the makeup of these supplements that have inspired me to take on the challenge of re-defining the “all natural” nature of our pet foods. So How is “All Natural” Legally Defined? There are plenty of regulations that relate to these terms but according to the FDA there’s NO legal definition of the term “All Natural.” The FDA and AAFCO requirements dictate that as long as the product doesn’t include added colors, artificial flavors or synthetic substances it can, and typically is, marketed as “All Natural.” Taking this a step further, there is no legal definition of the term “synthetic substance”. It may be surprising to know that whole foods processed with certain synthetic substances like petroleum products or hydrogenated sugars are often times classified as organic as well as meeting the requirements for all natural. The National Organic Program of the USDA Assists in Creating a Guideline for Products Labeled “Organic”. This program is authorized to establish the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances. This National List contains both synthetic substances that are permitted and certain natural substances that are prohibited for organic production. It may seem odd that Organic, a term most of us associate as occurring naturally, would encompass synthetic products. It is also assumed that any product that can be labeled as organic must automatically be “All Natural”. It is that point exactly that has prompted class action law suits against certain products labeled “All Natural” and or “Organic”. These suits have been successful in adding two

46

“Pets Are Family, Feed Them Like Family!” additional components to the definition of “All Natural” Two Components Added to Define “All Natural” 1. A natural ingredient is one that comes from or is made from a renewable resource found in nature. 2. Minimal processing involves only kitchen chemistry; processes that can be done in a family kitchen and do not negatively impact the purity of the natural ingredient. Although, these definitions have not yet been legally adopted by the FDA, therefore having no impact on pet food labels, they are important to our evaluation of pet products labeled “All Natural.” Whole foods are foods in their original as grown or raised state, contain nutritional values that include vitamins, minerals and the enzymes needed for the absorption of those nutrients. Added supplements are chemically and structurally different from those commonly found in foods. The problem is USP vitamins, also known or labeled “Natural” or “pharmaceutical grade,” account for the majority of vitamins in use today. The USP or U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention is a non-profit scientific organization, whose goal is to standardize and verify vitamins. This is what they say: A Supplement Successfully Meeting our Rigorous Testing and Auditing Criteria Receives the USP Verified Mark. When You See the Mark, it Means the Supplement: A. Contains the ingredients listed on the label, in the declared strength and amounts. B. Does not contain harmful levels of specified contaminants. C. Is made according to FDA and USP Good Manufacturing Practices, using sanitary and well-controlled processes. It’s the second point above that I hold issue with, “Does not contain harmful levels of specified contaminants.” This statement exists because “natural” or USP supplements are created by extracting and concentrating the vitamins from a food source in a laboratory. Unfortunately, this extraction requires a chemical process that in most cases utilizes petroleum derivatives or hydrogenated sugars, the same potentially harmful “synthetic substances” that could be considered harmful contaminants.

May 2016 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails or text TRITAILS to 64842

continued on next page

USP vitamins end up taking the form of an isolated crystalline structure, which can be a major issue for body absorption. The crystalline structure tends to be much larger in size as compared to its whole food counterpart, and it lacks other critical elements like enzymes that are needed for efficient utilization by the body. A prime example is vitamin C. Vitamin C naturally occurs in fruits such as oranges. Its so-called “natural” form is Ascorbic Acid which is made by fermenting corn sugars until they turn into sorbose, then acetone (yes, nail polish remover) is added to break the molecular bonds and create the isolated crystalline ascorbic acid. U.S. Government studies show that it takes 1250mg of ascorbic acid to produce the same antioxidant levels in blood that 80mg would produce from natural fruit. During My Endeavor to Develop a Balanced Raw Diet that Could be Sold as a “Complete Meal,” I Found Some Perplexing Results. Here are the ingredients I was feeding and utilized as my starting point that included - USDA prime meats and organic fruits and vegetables; 90/10 Ground Beef, Beef Heart, Beef Liver, Carrots, Peas, Spinach, Blue Berries, Cranberries, Coconut Oil, Garlic, Ginger, Parsley, Rosemary and Turmeric. Healthy items that I considered a balanced diet for my dog. When I pulled out the AFFCO specification I quickly learned that the diet I’ve been feeding my dog is actually deficient in 10 specific sub-components of protein, six vitamins and seven minerals. Through rigorous testing, I was unable to find a combination of meat and offal (organs) that would conform to the protein requirements. Although the inclusion of “Superfoods,” such as dietary yeast, kelp, spirulina, chia, would help to meet the AAFCO definition of a “Complete Meal,” the closest mix still leaves me deficient in two protein components, two vitamins and three minerals. Based on the current regulations, it begs the question: does the only solution to offering a “complete meal” require adding supplements that include tar, alcohol and nail polish remover? We must consider that wolves and other wild animals live without these added supplements. My personal project to create a whole foods based “complete meal” brought me face to face with disturbing realities. “All Natural” doesn’t always mean all natural, at least not when you consider the added supplements. Products labeled as organic can include inorganic synthesized compounds. By their definition organic includes no measures for quality as it only concerns itself with how it was grown or raised. In fact, organic ingredients sold for pet foods regularly include food items that cannot be sold for human consumption. They can include dying, disabled, diseased and dead animals as well as fruits and vegetables that are showing signs of rot.

I recommend you look carefully as you select your next bag or can of pet food. If the ingredient list is more than half supplements, is it really the food you want to purchase? If this food is truly organic how can it sell for the same price as other pet foods since the organic products for humans are almost always more expensive.

Honoring a Hero

Homeless to Hero The Tale of How Sgt. Stubby Earned His Stripes by Thomas Sullivan

The following account sounds like a tall tale someone would tell at a pub...about themselves. In reality, it’s a tale about a dog of inauspicious origins that went to Yale, joined the Army and fought in World War I. He saved the lives of many of his comrades, was wounded in Battle, patched up and sent back to the front, saved more lives, was wounded again and single-handedly captured and detained a German spy lurking in Allied trenches – an act for which he was advanced to the rank of Sergeant, thus outranking his best friend, a human. He was celebrated by the French and English whom he helped liberate, met three U.S. Presidents, led post-war parades all over the country and was asked to sit for a portrait painted by a famous American artist. He went to Georgetown Law and earned himself a place of honor at the Smithsonian Institution. This is a concise chronicle of the life of Sergeant Stubby, and you can’t make this stuff up.

The Early Years and Joining the Ranks Stubby’s odyssey began in 1917 in New Haven, Connecticut, somewhere on the periphery of Yale University. Likely born in 1916, his pedigree was as fortuneless as the doughboy’s he would serve with in the trenches on the Western Front. He was homeless, probably looking for something to eat, or to better himself through education, when he wandered onto Yale Field and happened upon the U.S. Army’s 102nd Infantry, 26th Yankee Division. The division was training for their looming deployment to the European theater. Private J. Robert Conroy and Stubby met on the field and became fast friends. Initially, through his association with Conroy, Stubby became the mascot for the division, but it was clear to all that due to his intelligence he would soon be regarded as more than just a furry figurehead. Stubby didn’t just learn to sit, stay and fetch. With training from Conroy and the 26th, he soon understood bugle calls, flawlessly took part in complex marching drills, and he even learned to salute officers along with the rest of his division. Stubby led marching drills in parades and knew to face right during pass in review. When it came time for the 102nd to go, Private Conroy smuggled Stubby onto a southbound train in his trench coat. When they arrived in Newport News they were to board the U.S.S. Minnesota

Sergeant Stubby bound for the battlefields of Europe. Since the ship wasn’t to get underway for a few days, Conroy had time to make the right connections with the crew to get Stubby on board and stow him away in a coal bin until they were underway. After the U.S. coastline disappeared off the stern, Stubby was out in the open and quickly won over the crew. When the CO eventually came across Stubby, the dog sat on his hind haunches and gave the Skipper a proper salute. After that no one questioned Stubby’s presence on board a Navy ship.

Becoming a Hero Stubby saw action in 17 battles on France’s Western Front. He was wounded by exposure in a mustard gas attack after which he

developed the ability to detect incoming gas and was able to alert his comrades in time to don their gas masks and help Stubby don his own. He would stand watch with his mates, and those who have stood a post know having a companion is much easier than doing it alone. Stubby also learned to alert the division of incoming artillery since he could hear the “whine” of approaching shells long before his human counterparts. He would venture into no man’s land to lead wounded soldiers back to the trenches, and he stayed by dying friends until they passed. One day Stubby came upon a German soldier in Allied trenches. The soldier was a spy marking the location of Allied troops for future attacks. Stubby, recognizing the soldier was speaking German and not English, started barking to alert his fellow soldiers of the intruder’s presence. When the soldier tried to get away, he lunged at him and grabbed him by the leg. During the struggle, Stubby got a better grip on the spy by biting down firmly on his caboose as securely as the coupling between two train cars, and he detained the enemy until backup arrived. It was for this action that the commander of the 102nd recommended Stubby for promotion to Sergeant. The promotion was approved, and he now outranked his friend Cpl. Conroy. Not long after, while on duty outside the trenches, Stubby was wounded a second time during an artillery strike, taking shrapnel in the chest and front legs. Cpl. Conroy, risking his own life, crawled out into no man’s land to save his friend. After getting him to safety, Stubby was transferred to a field hospital and then a Red Cross Recovery Hospital. Stubby arrived at the front lines with the sole duty of keeping up morale, but during his 18 months in the trenches he continued to learn new skills, and Stubby became an integral part of 26th Yankee Division.

A Hero’s Welcome and the Post-War Years Sgt. Stubby’s first stop on the way home was Paris where he received a hero’s welcome by the people of France. On Christmas Day in 1918, he met President Woodrow Wilson, who had already signed the armistice in November. Stubby would not have to stow away on the transport back Stateside. Instead, he marched proudly up the gangway of the U.S.S. Agamemnon, his jacket decorated with the rank and awards of a soldier. One of the medals he wore was a German Iron Cross that was taken from the spy Stubby captured, and it was pinned on his jacket so it hung directly over his buttocks. The 102nd Infantry 26th Yankee Division made port in Boston and were demobilized on April 29, 1919 at Camp Devens, Massachusetts. It was then Stubby began his next assignment: being loved by the entire country. City by city, one post-war parade at a time, he led his division in the marching drills he learned long ago on Yale Field. Stubby appeared in Vaudeville shows, attended the 1920 Republican Convention, and was invited to the White House twice by two different Presidents. His first White House visit was in 1921 with President Harding, and his second was for dinner with President Coolidge. That made a total of three times that Stubby held audience with U.S. Presidents.

Stubby and Conroy Conroy and Stubby ended up at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. where Conroy studied law and Stubby pursued a passion for athletics as the mascot for the Hoyas where it is purported that he invented the half time show. During halftime, Stubby would entertain the crowd by pushing a football around the field with his nose. If all that wasn’t enough, Stubby and Conroy had the honor of being photographed with General Pershing, Commander of U.S. forces in Europe. Pershing pinned a one-of-a-kind award on Stubby that was created specifically for him: the Humane Society Gold Medal. He was also asked to sit for a portrait painted by noted American and U.S. Capitol artist Charles Ayer Whipple.

Farewell to a Hero Stubby died in Conroy’s arms, passing away peacefully in his sleep on April 3, 1926. The day after, he was honored with an obituary that took up an entire half page in the New York Times. The whole country mourned the loss of a genuine American hero, icon, and good boy. His lifelong friend Cpl. J. Robert Conroy had Stubby preserved and kept him at home. In 1956, Conroy transferred Stubby to his final duty station, Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. There, he took a place of distinction in the Price of Freedom hall where he stands eternal watch over the heritage of our country. Sgt. Stubby was the very embodiment of the core values that every true member of the U.S. Armed Forces, past and present, strives to embrace. HOOAH SGT. STUBBY! GOOD BOY!
