FROM THE EDITORS

M

aybe you’ve noticed this issue of Triad Happy Tails seems a little heavier? Thanks to our advertisers, we were able to add on eight pages for our October issue, allowing us to add a full page of animals for both the Randolph and Rockingham County Animal Shelters. A big SHOUT OUT to each and every advertiser for helping us to get these extra animals out in front of the public, giving them a better chance at finding their own permanent homes. We began publishing THT Magazine around two and a half years ago and we still get a burst of joy when we hear stories of animals adopted as a result of being featured in the magazine (or for that matter, animals getting adopted, period). We love the saying, “Saving one animal may not save the world, but it will save the world for that one animal.” This saying is so true. Sadly, adoptions only make a tiny dent in the pet overpopulation explosion. The ASPCA estimates around 5 million to 7 million companion animals enter our animal shelters nationwide every year, and the number of animals who never even make it to the shelters is estimated to be much higher. We can not say enough, please spay and neuter your pets, it is the answer to the pet overpopulation crisis. Both Forsyth and Guilford Counties have low cost spay/neuter facilities and programs available. Forsyth Humane Society is our featured rescue organization this

month. Rex and Zoey, our precious October cover models, are just two of the many animals available for adoption from Forsyth Humane Deb Printup Jennifer Frazier Society (FHS). FHS is all about adoptions, but they’re also about educating the public on animal welfare issues such as spay/neuter, proper pet care, animal safety and much more. They’re about reaching out to the public, implementing special programs for the betterment of our community, and creating a more humane community. Read about this wonderful organization on pages 10 and 11. Another big, “Thanks” goes out to Dr. April Marklin of Burlington Animal Hospital, author of “Ask the Vet” (page 15). Dr. Marklin describes common products toxic to cats and dogs and what to do in case of exposure. Thanks also to Angela Craven, Dog Trainer at Moms 4 Paws, who talks about training your dog with treats on page 46. Have a wonderful October and watch out for those scary visitors who might just frighten your “fur child”. Halloween is prime time for pets getting scared and running away. Keep pets secured in another location when entertaining or handing out treats. Keep them all safe!

Pepper has grown up in

the shelter, arriving as a onemonth old kitten. This past July he turned one. He’s an extremely handsome fellow with a white nose and mustache. During the photo session he was very laid back and sat in the lap of strangers very nicely. This fine boy needs a home, it’s a shame to be an orphan all your life. is as sweet as her name. Anise is an herb, often used to enhance the flavor of licorice candy. This socialable 11 month old cat is just as sweet as candy. What a nice way to spend a fall evening, cuddling with someone soft and warm. She has already been spayed, and is ready to meet her new family.

Miaou – Bonjour, je suis Philippa! I am truly a sophisticated, smart cat – well aware of my noble descent. This does not mean I do not like playing with you – I adore belly rubs and chasing pens. And, I do get along with other cats – they just need to know I will always be no. 1 in the house… I am a tough little cookie and lived on the streets for about a year until I had an encounter with a motor vehicle. Since then I only have one eye – but hey, I still have another one and another 8.5 lives – so what?? I am about 4 years old, spayed, FIV- and I am current on my vaccinations & deworming.

Special Section

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

by Brittany Murray, Victim’s Advocate,WSPD

W

hat do you think of when you hear the words domestic violence? Do you immediately envision a lady with dark sunglasses and a scarf around her neck? Or maybe a petite woman huddled in a dark corner with her face in her hands? For many people, these are the images that first come to mind. To be sure, these are very truthful images of some victims, but certainly not all. Do you ever think of a child who lies in bed while hearing mom and dad argue over the grocery bill, only to hear the argument silenced by “bad words” and crying? How about the woman who is dragged into a car by an intoxicated boyfriend, and threatened with injury or even murder, if she tries to escape or call for help? Or, have you ever imagined the wealthy businessman whose domestic partner repeatedly kicks his dog in front of him, as punishment for talking to someone too long on the phone? These images of domestic violence can be most difficult to comprehend. Domestic violence does not only include physical abuse, but mental, sexual, verbal, emotional, and financial abuse as well. Domestic violence does not discriminate; it affects people of all ages, origin, gender, and class. In 2011, the Winston-Salem Police Department responded to 6,103 domestic violence related calls. These numbers are not just specific to Winston-Salem, but are consistent across the country. It is a problem and it’s time to talk about it. Domestic Violence Awareness Month began in October 1987 and is still observed today. This time is set aside to further educate others about domestic violence, remind us of the impact and effect it has on so many, and to encourage advocacy and understanding about a subject many choose

to ignore. As a domestic violence advocate, I find myself looking for “red flags” when I read a police report. These red flags signal to me that the victim is in a very dangerous situation that could escalate and even become deadly. One of these red flags is animal abuse. Some people may not realize the very serious correlation between animal abuse and domestic violence in intimate partner relationships. Domestic violence batterers may abuse a family pet as punishment, to demonstrate power and control, as a form of intimidation, or simply to keep the victim from leaving their abusive partner. Batterers use this method of abuse because it works. Many victims absolutely refuse to leave their residence and seek shelter if they have a pet. Their cat, dog, bird, lizard, etc. may be the only source of companionship and happiness that victim has. The thought of leaving that part of their family behind is not a choice. I once had a victim tell me that her husband threw their four-month-old puppy across the room in its crate and then kicked the crate. He then looked at her and said, “See what I did to that dog? I can do that to you.” This type of intimidation is never forgotten. Fortunately, more and more people are being educated about the link between pet abuse and domestic violence. In fact, our local animal shelter, Forsyth County Animal Shelter, and its Safe Haven Program Partners have developed a program to provide temporary foster care for animals affected by domestic violence. The Safe Haven program was founded in 2002 as a collaborative effort between Forsyth County Animal Control and Family Services, Inc. This program offers an option to domestic violence victims. Clients seeking refuge with Family Services, Inc. are provided with the relief knowing their pet will be cared for. For more information regarding the Safe Haven program, visit their

website at http://animalcontrol.forsyth.cc. Any threat of animal abuse or actual incident of animal cruelty should be taken very seriously. Even if the abuser has never physically harmed the victim, animal cruelty is a warning sign that clearly demonstrates the abuser’s lack of respect for a living, breathing creature. These incidents can and should be reported to law enforcement.

If you, or someone you know

is experiencing domestic violence,

please know that you can ask for help. We celebrate survivors, learn from and grieve for those who have died, and seek to find new ways to reach those living with domestic violence.

Victims of domestic violence never deserve the abuse, it is NOT their fault. To speak with a Winston-Salem Police Department domestic violence advocate, call 336-773-7860. The 24-hour domestic violence crisis line is 336-723-8125 and the sexual assault crisis line is 336-722-4457.

Forsyth Humane Society

Winona

A

Everyone there truly embraces our mission and is intent on creating a more humane Forsyth County. Most people think of the Humane Society as one of a few great places to find that perfect pet for their family, which we certainly strive to be. However, we are working very hard to be so much more to our community. One of the central focuses of our mission has always been outreach and education, but with the business of caring for and adopting animals it was often hard to find time to reach out to our community. Last year we were fortunate enough to receive a grant from the WinstonSalem Foundation that allowed us to hire a part time employee that was responsible for taking our mission into our community and educating people about issues such as the importance of spay/neuter, proper pet care, animal safety and to simply talk about how to be a more humane community. The results have been overwhelmingly successful for FHS; through our revamped outreach and education program we’ve reached out to groups and individuals in every corner of Forsyth County. One goal this year for outreach has been to intentionally reach out to groups we historically didn’t work with. We did a very good job educating people that happened to come into our adoption center on October 2012 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

dopt, Educate, Love. The Forsyth Humane Society (FHS) has lived these words for the last 71 years. Operating out of a tiny 1800 square foot facility, the very small staff is able to accomplish so much because of the unbelievable support from our community. Each year thousands volunteer their time to help FHS accomplish their mission. Volunteers work hand in hand with staff to walk dogs, play with cats, clean kennels and reach out to and educate our community.

Miller Street, but we knew in order to really reach a different audience we needed to go to their neighborhoods. One example of this has been our relationship with El Buen Pastor, a local Hispanic organization that hosts an after school program for children in the Old Town area of Forsyth County. Susan Doran, the outreach and education coordinator at FHS and a host of her volunteers, slowly started this relationship. Initially, many of the children were afraid of dogs and really had no concept of how to simply play with and enjoy a puppy. After a few visits, the children became more comfortable with our volunteers and with the dogs. What was once an awkward experience has become something the kids, our volunteers and FHS puppies look forward to. We also use this opportunity to give the kids take-home information about pet care and provide them with resources for their families. Another great partnership that has developed has been a puppy trekking program with local YMCA after-school programs. In this program kids are rewarded for good behavior or reaching a set goal by walking

To adopt Winona, Bentley, Patches, Trixie, or the cover models, Rex and Zoey, please call The Forsyth Humane Society (FHS) at (336) 721-1303. a dog or puppy brought over by FHS. The kids enjoy being outside and walking dogs, and we have the opportunity to teach them about proper pet care, answer questions and hopefully instill in them a lifelong love and respect for animals. As our outreach programs continue to grow, I’m constantly amazed by the feedback we receive and the requests we receive to come out to new groups. We currently have conducted regular outreach or educational events at several retirement homes, afterschool programs, preschools, and recreation centers. In addition, we started a Junior Advisory Board made up of local high school students and we are in the organizing phase of a Humane Society Club at Wake Forest University and Salem College. We are very serious and focused on the outreach and education part of our mission. Our hope is that more people will understand the unconditional love pets provide and have a better perspective as to what it means to be a good, responsible pet owner. Although outreach and education has been a renewed focus for the Forsyth Humane Society, we continue to serve our community in a number of ways. Whether we are responding to a family in need with pet food assistance, providing low income spay &

neuter vouchers or helping someone find their perfect pet, we are working very hard to make a difference in our community. One way we are making a difference in our community is through a targeted spay/neuter program. PetSmart Charities awarded FHS an $80,000 grant to be used exclusively to spay and neuter dogs only in Kernersville. The idea is this money can make a quantifiable difference in the number of unwanted dogs in Kernersville. This grant has opened the door for us to work with many veterinarians, business owners and Kernersville residents that care and understand the need for spay and neuter and how it can positively affect their community. If you know anyone in Kernersville that needs more information about this program, they can email us at spaykernersville@forsythhumane.org or they can call our spay neuter information line at (336) 546-1360. Volunteers are also working in Kernersville to ensure residents are aware of the spay and neuter program and our outreach programs. FHS volunteers are critical to fulfilling our mission. We are always in need of volunteers, and we have many opportunities for those who want to help. If you are interested in becoming an FHS volunteer, online applications are available on our website at

Patches

www.forsythhumane.org or at our adoption center. If you are sending an application through the mail, please send all applications to: Vanessa Doran, Forsyth Humane Society, 61 Miller Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27104. For more information, please send an email to vdoran@forsythhumane.org or you can call (336) 721-1303, ext. 104. In order to continue providing and expanding FHS outreach and education programs and adoption center, we need to create awareness and funding. Our annual fundraiser, Gala at Graylyn; A Fetchin’ Good Time will be Saturday, November 3, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at The Graylyn Estate in Winston-Salem. We hope you will join us for a wonderful evening of dinner, open bar, dancing and a live and silent auction to benefit the Forsyth Humane Society. Bonnie. Looking for a fam-

and would love to find her loving forever home. She is around 6 years old. She has a lovely gait, is very sweet, loves to play, and amuses herself very well!! She will play endlessly in a large, fenced yard. She would like to be an only pet, as she has a tendency to want to chase kitties. She is a bit on the small side for her breed, but that makes her a perfect size for an indoor companion! She’s up-to-date on vaccines, spayed, and ready to play with you!!!

ily seeking a fun and friendly challenge. I am house-broken and do my business outdoors, never inside. I adore being outside in a large fenced-in yard. Currently, I share the dog lot with other dogs but it took me a little while to adjust to the company. It’s ok for now...but at first it was a little overwhelming if you want to be top dog, or maybe share the glory with one other dog. Some of my passions are hiking, eating and lounging in the yard. I’m 8 years old and I love kids, although smaller ones sometimes get knocked over by my affection.

What are Some Common Products That can Poison Your Dog or Cat?

Y

our dog and cat are not small humans. Many products that we commonly use can be dangerous to our pets. Listed below is a small sample of the more commonly seen poisonings in dogs and cats. If you suspect your pet may have been exposed to a poison or medication, please contact your veterinarian immediately for the safest treatment recommendations. If your veterinarian is closed, please call one of the emergency clinics in your area for treatment recommendations. Time is of the essence, so don’t delay calling once you are suspicious of a possible exposure. Your vet will need to know the name of the product, the strength and number of pills suspected to have been ingested. Veterinarians can contact a veterinary poison control hotline to determine the best treatment for your pet. 1. Human Medications A. Aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen: These pain medications are commonly used in human medicine but can be very deadly to your cat. They don’t metabolize these medications like we do and one dose can be fatal. Use of these products in dogs can lead to stomach ulceration, liver and kidney complications and will delay your vet’s ability to treat your pet’s pain until these medications are out of their system. Do not use any of these medications without consulting with your vet first!! B. Vitamins and minerals: Some vitamin and minerals can lead to liver, kidney issues and GI upset depending on type used and dosing. Check with your vet before beginning any supplementation. C. Accidental ingestion of human prescription medications: Dogs love to chew up bottles and ingest the products inside. Please keep all medications safely away from your pets and call immediately if any ingestion is suspected. 2. X ylitol: This is a new artificial sweetener found in human gum, candy and baked goods. It can lead to low blood sugar, seizure and liver failure. You may not realize your pet has been exposed,

so watch for weakness, seizure activity and non-responsive pets. 3. P eople food: Grapes, avocado, xylitol sweetener, raisins, onion, macadamia nuts and yeast dough are just a few items that may harm your pet. Any ingestion of chocolate can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, seizures and even death. The severity of illness will depend on the size of your pet, the amount ingested and the type of chocolate. 4. Topical flea/tick products: Talk to your veterinarian about the safest products to use for flea and tick control. Many new products have hit the market and it is very difficult to know which one is the best fit for your pet. Several products can not be used on cats and young pets and can cause seizure and death. 5. P lants: Lilies can cause vomiting, kidney failure and death to cats; spring bulbs can be fatal when ingested; fertilizers can be dangerous to our pets; sago potted palms can cause liver failure and death; elephant ear, philodendron, devil’s ivy and dumbcane can cause drooling, vomiting and difficulty breathing; mushrooms in our yard, mistletoe and holly can also be toxic when ingested. 6. Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) leads to drunkenness, vomiting, seizures, kidney failure and death. Treatment can be very expensive and success depends on the amount ingested and how quickly the pet starts treatment. 7. G lo-sticks, sunscreen ingested, ice melts, ribbons, tinsel, small parts of toys, batteries, etc., are all hazardous to your pets. For more information, please go to ASPCA Animal Control Center or contact your vet!

Trick or Treat CAT!! Don’t get TRICKED into thinking fleas are gone for the winter. TREAT your pets with flea control all year round! Ask your vet for the best products to safely use on your pets.

Another child rescued these guys and brought them to an animal friendly neighbor. The kittens have been bottle-fed and are very social. DOB is about 7/10/2012. Alex. I am a 2 year old terrier

My brother and sister and I were orphaned at 2 weeks old, but a nice AARF volunteer bottle-raised us. I was the runt of the litter until I hit my growth spurt a few weeks ago, and now I’m the biggest! And the cuddliest. I love to climb into a warm lap, give kisses, and purr like a diesel engine! I love to sleep in people beds too. I follow my foster mom all around the house so she knows how much I love her. I also love to eat! I go crazy for treats, canned food, and catnip. If I’m not cuddling or eating, then I love to wrestle with all my friends. DOB is 3/17/2012.

mix who was rescued in Yadkinville when a nice man saw someone dump me out at a stop sign and then take off. I am a very high-spirited little man with loads of energy. I weigh about 15 pounds and would be a great little dog for a runner or a family with kids. I am housebroken and crate trained, neutered, and am up-to-date on my vaccinations. I can be seen on Saturdays at AARF at 311 Harvey Street in Winston Salem from noon until 4. Due to a home visit being a part of the adoption process, I cannot be adopted outside of a one hour radius of Winston Salem.

ANIMAL RESCUE & FOSTER PROGRAM 336.574.9600 / www.arfpnc.com

Dora.

Bowie.

Quite the little explorer our Dora is. She loves to be nosey and flits around just like a little investigator. She was born the 1st of April, 2012 and came to ARFP when someone found her, and brother Deigo, in their carport in August. Dora endeared herself to everyone immediately, even to the other cats living at our adoption center. Dora has now been spayed, vaccinated, and tested for feline diseases. She is as healthy as can be! Dora is a beautiful classic brown tabby with gorgeous markings. Seeing is believing so come meet her today!

If one word were used to describe Bowie, it would be adorable. This sweet boy, born 5/1/12, is the smallest of his litter but was the first to begin fearlessly exploring his new foster home. Bowie loves to play with his brothers, Jagger and Frehley, and has a great time with kitty toys; however, he always finds time to come up to snuggle in a lap or get a quick belly rub before going on to his next adventure. This fun-loving little guy would make a great addition to any family. Bowie would love for you to come by and see him next time he is at the adoption center. He knows it will be love at first sight when you meet him.

Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Dora. n

Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Bowie. n

Diego and sister Dora, were found in a dog lovers carport underneath her car. Not having ever had cats the woman panicked a little until a friend calmed her down. Three days went by and no homes could be found. Their fear was that both kittens would end up at the local shelter. Lucky for Dora and Diego we had room for both kittens at our adoption center. Sweet does not begin to describe Diego. He is your typical loving male kitty, plays well with others, and purrs on touch:) Diego is now neutered and fully vaccinated as well as negative for feline diseases. This healthy lover is now waiting for his forever home. Could you be right for him? Born around April 1st, 2012, Diego is no fool! Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Diego. n

Watson.

Emory.

Our little Emory is as sweet as they come! Emory and her siblings were rescued from High Point and are enjoying their new foster homes. She loves to play with toys and other dogs. Emory definitely has a lab look to her but has a very petite frame. She was born on 5-15-12. Interested in meeting her? Contact ARFP today! Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in adopting Emory. n

Kirby.

“Watson is a goodnatured, young, athletic boy. He is energetic and needs exercise to keep both his body and mind healthy. He enjoys playing with other dogs, but his style of play may be a bit too rough for some. Watson is very social and enjoys meeting all types of people; however, he seems to really crave the company of other dogs....especially of the female persuasion. He is quite affectionate, and likes to cuddle with his human companions if he is allowed. Watson is one and half years old and is perfectly crate trained and almost perfectly house-trained. He is neutered and up to date on vaccines and heartworm preventative. If you have room in your home and heart for Watson please contact us.

This good looking little guy is one of ARFP’s young fosters! He was removed from a home where no one was taking care of him. Now, Kirby has started interviewing for his forever family. He’s asking that his new home have lots of toys and wants his new owners to have plenty of time to spend with him. You won’t find a more loveable pup! He loves to play and loves humans of all ages! Kirby was born on 12/1/11. We think he and his siblings are part Boxer and Beagle and maybe part something else too. He is house/crate trained, up-to-date on routine vaccinations and neutered.

Call ARFP at 574-9600 if you are interested in Watson. n

Eva

Isabelle,

is an adorable kitten that was found in a tree at a local veterinarian’s office. Although she jumped down and ran off, amazingly, she turned up again and the employees took her into the clinic. Poor Eva had seemingly been dumped by her previous owner near a busy road. Eva is an outgoing little girl. She purrs up a storm and loves being held. Being adventurous and daring, Eva makes sure that she never has a dull moment and neither does her foster family. Craving love and attention, she will make someone a great companion. She gets along well with other cats and cat friendly dogs.

aka Izzy, has recently turned six years old. She is rather shy in new situations, but underneath the shyness is a very lovable girl. Izzy loves to be brushed and fussed over and she especially loves having her belly rubbed. She will let you know how much she enjoys grooming by talking to you the entire time. Izzy would make a wonderful pet for someone who wants a laid back, very loving kitty who is happy just to hang out with her special person.

Kiwi.

Pearl is

Like her “cousin” Salem, Kiwi was rescued from a storage unit by an FCAP volunteer. She is a gorgeous little girl, soft as velvet, with pretty tabby markings shining through her black/smoke color. From the time she was rescued, she purred and rubbed all over her foster mom’s face and being held and cuddled is all she is interested in at the moment. She is inquisitive and curious about her new surroundings. Little Kiwi and her “cousin” Salem make a beautiful pair of smoke kittens.

an absolutely beautiful silver tabby with striking green eyes and the softest fur. She might be described as a bit fussy when put in a new situation with people she doesn’t know, but once she becomes comfortable, she is a real love-bug! Pearl will run up to you with her tail straight up, to be scratched on the head and neck. Pearl is somewhat timid with other kitties, and will do best in a home that is moderately quiet, without small children, and perhaps another docile cat or a calm dog.

is a stunningly handsome black/ smoke tabby, as his foster mom describes him, and is very unusual looking. He was rescued from a storage unit along with another adorable kitten, Kiwi, by an FCAP volunteer. Salem was very frightened at first but quickly learned the joys of being petted, and he soon blossomed into a purr machine. He gives great head butts and stands on his tip toes for lots of love. Salem is ready for his forever home and would make a wonderful addition to a household.

four months old now and is an adorable kitten. Still a little quiet and reserved in new situations, he has become a playful and curious little guy who can definitely hold his own. Thor loves playing with his brothers and enjoys cuddling and being held, which makes him purr very loud. He would be happiest in a quieter adoptive home. His brothers, Liam, Troy and Cashew are also available for adoption.

RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com

Holmes and Watson were found

Tinkerbell

as strays when they were just 3 weeks old. A nice lady rescued them and found a nursing mother cat that took them in as part of her litter. Once they were big enough and eating kitten food well they came into our program. Both boys are developing great and love to play and snuggle with their foster parents. They are eating dry food now and have really started coming out of their shells. They spend their days enjoying playing and being carefree kittens.

and her siblings were found abandoned on the side of the road. Thanks to a Good Samaritan they made it to a local vet’s office and eventually to Red Dog Farm. When they originally came to us, they were just three weeks old and still needed to be bottle fed. Today, they are enjoying life and playing as any kitten should. Tinkerbell is litter box trained, spayed and current on her vaccinations. She will make an excellent cat for any home.

Hershey is super sweet and

Venus

rich with love. He is looking for a new forever family since his former owners had to move and can no longer keep him. Hershey loves all people, kids, dogs, cats and even rabbits. This big sweetheart just wants a family of his own. He loves to play fetch and will return the toy time and again for you to toss! He does not need to be crated, but is beautifully trained to go to his crate and will sometimes just go in for a nap. Hershey is a calm and gentle dog and will make any family happy.

came to us as a referral from animal control from a situation of horrible neglect. Venus is approximately 18-22 months old, so we will estimate her birthday as June 1, 2010. Venus is a small-framed mare who may have a growth spurt now that she will begin gaining weight, but she looks like she will be a small horse. She has very nice ground manners for a filly of her age and will be a great horse for someone willing to train her once she gains weight and is old enough for training. Venus is very social, not afraid to beg for attention! If you lean on the fence of her paddock, she will rub her face on you until you agree to scratch her. Venus is now gaining weight and is doing well.

Rooster was surrendered to

Snowball

us when his owners sold their farm. Rooster is now being ridden at a walk, trot and canter by one of our volunteer trainers and is now trotting over crossrails and maiden-level cross country fences. He loads confidently into a trailer and has been on “field trips” to other farms to build his riding confidence. This little guy will make a great hunter, eventer or trail horse! Rooster is still continuing to do great in his foster home and just can’t wait to meet his forever family! Rooster needs an experienced rider but he is an absolute wonderful horse.

came to us from a hoarding situation earlier this year when her owner could no longer care for her. Snowball is doing great in her foster home. She was a little shy at first but is quickly warming up to her foster family. Snowball does not mind loud noises or a lot of commotion, in fact, we think she may even prefer it. She recently had her toenails clipped and did quite well since they hadn’t been done in some time. Snowball would make a great addition to any family. She is now ready to find her forever home.

Bruno came to the

Scotty

SPCA with his feline companion, Scotty, after his human caretaker passed away. Neither he or Scotty ever quite adapted to the shelter life, they were both frightened and hid all the time. They were in foster care for a while and warmed right up, but one of their foster parents were severely allergic to cats so they are back at the shelter now, still waiting for their forever home. Bruno would love to sit on your lap all day and would prefer to be adopted with Scotty if at all possible.

and his feline companion Bruno came to the SPCA together, they were fostered together and now they are both back at the shelter together. He came from another shelter as a stray where he was about to be euthanized! We are so glad he is with us, but we want him to find a furever home. Adopt Porkchop today!

months old, he was seized by the Sheriff’s Department because he had two embedded collars. He has recovered from his surgery and is anxious to find his forever family. Because he spent the first 18 months of his life on a tether, he is a big goofy boy who is always SO excited to see people. Otis has been going through a six-week obedience class, and his manners have improved a lot! This smart boy would love to have a big yard to run in and lots of people to keep him company. He’s a little picky with other dogs, but when he finds a friend, they’re friends for life! Otis has mastered crate training, loves to play ball, and can’t wait to be your new forever friend!

He’s got tons of energy and stamina and would love to be your running and hiking buddy and then snuggle up next to you when he is all burnt out. He has a lot of potential to be a really good dog and is looking for someone to give him a second chance to thrive in the world.

He is clearly incredibly handsome, and has the temperament to match!! Such a doll, and he is really smart too! He would love to be your “up for anything” friend. The Sergei Foundation —Sophie’s Story

I

t’s a beautiful morning, and you’re on a walk with your best friend in the entire world—Sophie, the shelter dog you rescued three years ago. Suddenly, she slips her collar and goes running after a furry squirrel crossing your path. As the squirrel hops over a fence in its attempt to get away, Sophie tries to follow. Not quite making the leap, the point of a decorative, aluminum fence penetrates her underarm on the way over. Sophie falls to the ground, badly injured. Running over, you scoop her in to your arms and quickly head home to grab your keys. In a frenzy, you try to get Sophie quickly but gently into the back seat of your car, and then drive like the wind to your veterinary hospital. Once you get there, they look her over and tell you that Sophie needs surgery as she tore through her muscle and ligaments to the bone; infection will set in soon if she doesn’t undergo treatment quickly. They estimated this cost to be $500 in addition to the costs of the initial exam and needed medications. Knowing you don’t have that much available money, your mind races with alternatives. You apply for Care Credit but are denied because you are currently on unemployment. You call a family member for help, but they can only give $100 right now as they are in hard times as well. Looking at Sophie as she lies

by Caitlin Daly and Karen Fullerton

in your arms whining in pain, you ask the vet if they could please create a payment plan for you; they cannot do that. Your best friend Sophie, the one who has always been there for you no matter what and has never asked anything of you until now, is looking up at you to please help her. The sad reality sets in that the only thing you may be able to do for her is humanely let her go and be free of pain. The Sergei Foundation is the kind of organization that helps in times like this when a pet owner has to face unnecessary euthanization because of finances. We are pet owners too, and we all know the feeling of panic when your pet is injured or ill and you have to come up with large amounts of money at one time. We don’t want anyone to lose their family member over finances. Our mission is to keep families together, and we do so by helping to bridge the gap between what you can contribute financially and the cost for your pet to receive life-saving treatment. In order for an animal to get help, the owner must submit an online application at www.sergeifoundation.org. Applications are reviewed as quickly as possible because in some emergency situations, time is critical. Criteria for receiving financial aid are listed online but include having a history of the pet being well taken care of (such as yearly wellness

exams and veterinarian administered vaccinations). Also, the owner must apply for care credit in person at the veterinarian’s office and have proof of financial need (such as a state aid case number or proof of unemployment, etc.). The Sergei Foundation is a 501(c)(3) North Carolina non-profit organization and animals can only be helped when funds are available. Since one hundred percent of funding comes from individual donations and proceeds from fundraising events, we need donations now more than ever in these tough economic times. With the holiday season fast approaching, won’t you consider a year-end, tax-deductible donation to help save an animal’s life? Donations can be made in honor of, or in memory of, a family pet. There is nothing more heart-breaking than needing to turn a family away due to lack of funding. Please consider donating to help keep fur-families together! Donations can be made online at www.sergeifoundation.org or sent to PO Box 17256, Winston-Salem, NC 27116.

SPECIFIC BREED & VARIOUS LOCAL RESCUE GROUPS Contact information is listed with each featured animal. Fireball.

Greetings all! My name is Fireball because I have a lovely reddishbrown coat. I’m a young lass -- just 1-1/2 years old -- but I’m past all that annoying puppy stuff. I’m a good girl in the house, and every dog and person I meet is a friend. I’m crate trained, and I walk nicely on leash too. My favorite thing is playing though, so Carolina Basset if you have little ones that need help burning Hound Rescue off some energy, I’m your girl! I’m so lucky that I didn’t get any of those nasty heartworms in me. I’m going to the vet to get a few things taken care of, but once that’s done, I’ll be ready for my forever family. Is that you? If you’re interested in adopting Fireball or one of our other basset hounds, please contact Becky Gering at bger16@gmail.com, or visit our website at www.cbhr.com. n

Rummy.

Rumster, Rumeister, Rum-a-nator - this guy is an energetic boy who is super sweet and loves your company. Rummy is around 3 years old and is ready for his new family. He is house/crate trained and gets along with other dogs. Four Seasons Boxer Rescue Please visit our website at www.FourSeasonsBoxerRescue.com if you are interested in offering Rummy a loving forever home. n

Safira comes to us from a home of a young couple who loved her dearly but unwittingly gave her a chew toy that was too small for a Doberman her size. She promptly swallowed it and it lodged in her intestine, requiring very expensive emergency surgery (far beyond their means) to remove it. They brought her to Elijah’s House, where she was rushed Doberman Rescue of the Triad to the vet and surgery was successfully performed. At seven months, Safira is just a pup, but what a beautiful and loving girl she is. She lives to be made of, loves to kiss and be petted, and even sings a bit when called upon to do so. Safira’s not likely to be staying with us for long, given her “curb appeal”, so if you’re interested, please submit an application at www.doberman-rescue.com and make an appointment to meet her. n

She plays with her canine Rescue of NC siblings some but mostly ignores them and would prefer a home where she is the only “Button” again! We have not observed Button around cats or children. Button’s allergies require that she takes a weekly shot and bath. She loves to sit beside you and give kisses and snuggle and also loves to burrow with her old blanket, ride in the car and play “fetch”. Button attended obedience school as a puppy and is a really good dog who comes when called and obeys her foster mom very well. Her adoption fee is $350. Call BTRNC at 339-4368 to adopt Button. n

Minnie. If you’re looking for a lot of free kisses and a dog with major smarts, Minnie’s your girl! She loves to learn and already knows how to sit, lie down, shake, stay, go to her crate, and “leave it”. She would thrive with an owner that will continue her training. The only thing Minnie enjoys more than training time is snuggle time, and she wants nothing more than to be by your Carolina Care Bullies side. Rough physical play can scare her, a home without young children would be best. She had a difficult start to life, and is hoping for a home that will provide gentle, positive reinforcement and that will let her explore new things at her own pace. In return she will be the most loyal and loving companion you could ask for. For more information contact Amanda at info@carebullies.org.

Pepa

is a very polite “lowmaintenance” 10 year old Springer mix who enjoys being groomed, is very good with visiting company, gets along well with other dogs and is good with kids. She has a fairly strong prey drive so she might not respect a family cat. She is trustworthy when left alone while English Springer Spaniel you’re at work. Her favorite activity is a nice long walk. She sleeps in her own dog bed at night. She’s upto-date on her shots, in good health - although she takes a low-cost pill daily to control her thyroid. She will be a really good addition to almost any family. Visit SpringerRescue.org/adopt/adoptionfaq.html for adoption application info or send an email to ESRACarolinas@gmail.com. n

How a Life of Rescue‌ Began with a Moose

by Susan Lynn Person

S

ince I was a small child, animals have been an important part of my life. As a result, the thought of any animal suffering brings me great sorrow. I am naturally drawn to rescue because these animals are victims of circumstance and human indolence. They want nothing more than a loving home. My earliest memory of rescue was when I was four years old and went to a shelter to claim Pepper, our shaggy black mutt that escaped and was picked up by animal control. As we walked into the

shelter, we were met with a wall of caged felines. I was immediately drawn to the scruffiest, most emaciated of the bunch. I knew she needed me. After much pleading and convincing, we left with both Pepper and Moose, a black and gray tabby whose lack of manners was easily overlooked by her charming personality. Moose was a born survivor and protector. She and I had a close bond from early on. To put it mildly, my parents had a rocky marriage. When yelling matches erupted, Moose always put herself between my father and I ready to strike if the situation got out of

control. After the divorce, Moose and I lived with Mom. A few years later, we had a gas leak in our home that would have surely killed us if it wasn’t for Moose. Mom and I came home one evening to find Moose horribly sick. Although she was disoriented and in pain, she did her best to herd us out of the room. Mom, immediately concerned, dialed 911. I passed out while the medics were on their way. Mom and I were rushed to the hospital and treated for carbon monoxide poisoning. My uncle was on the scene too as he was a firefighter. He and his wife took care of Moose and the other animals in the house. Moose was my constant companion through multiple moves and two states. She passed away my senior year of college. It was one of the most tragic moments of my life; I felt like I had lost my guardian angel. My love of animals has never waned. Adoption became my only option. In 2002, my best friend married and moved into a house previously occupied by a family member. Two dogs, a Dalmatian mix and a Beagle mix, came with the house as the previous occupant could no longer care for them. While my friend honeymooned, I cared for the house and animals. She had not decided

These dogs weren’t just neglected They had been abandoned. By week’s end, I had decided to take the dogs home with me. The Dalmatian was named Tillie. The Beagle became Shorty.

Shorty what she was going to do with the dogs, as she had a cat of her own and felt that was all the responsibility she could handle. The dogs were so starved for attention they would leave their full food bowls to be near me. Seeing such sweet creatures riddled with parasites, I was heartbroken. These dogs weren’t just neglected -They had been abandoned. By week’s end, I had decided to take the dogs home with me. The Dalmatian was named Tillie. The Beagle became Shorty. They were the most appreciative dogs I have ever adopted. They were grateful for every hug, every morsel of food. Unfortunately, over the next few months they became too competitive over attention. So, later that year when I married, we decided it was best for all to split the pair. My mom eagerly took Tillie. My husband and I took Shorty. Shorty was an excitable, loving dog that always seemed to be smiling. Sadly, only four months later Shorty became immobilized by a degenerative spine. Our

veterinarian hoped that Shorty would walk again as she had witnessed it before. Shorty stayed at the hospital for treatment. Every day we visited. As the time went by it was apparent that Shorty was not improving. Visits became harder. One day while comforting Shorty, I broke down. The cat in the kennel above Shorty threw her dry food at me. It startled me enough to help me compose myself. The cat then reached her paw out and tapped me on the head. This scenario played out repeatedly. I would arrive to visit Shorty and as soon as I became hysterical, this cat would do what she could to grab my attention. I finally asked the doctor about her. The cat and her sister were brought in by another doctor’s daughter. The sister was already adopted. The hospital staff named the remaining kitten Mittens since she appears to be wearing gloves due to her coloring. Mittens had suffered a burn to her chest and was deaf. So far, no one was interested in caring for a deaf cat. The heart-wrenching time had come where my husband and I had to make a decision. We felt that our only humane option was to euthanize Shorty. Even when you know it’s the right decision, it is never an easy one. We had Shorty

cremated and her ashes remain with us to this day. I will never forget the kindness and support I felt from our veterinarian and the hospital staff. When we went to pick up Shorty’s ashes we asked about Mittens. She was doing great, but still waiting for a forever home. After a brief discussion, my husband and I decided to adopt Mittens. Her little paws and playful nature brought me great comfort in one of the hardest moments of my life. The least I could do was give her a loving home. We named her Isis. Susan Person, Susan@bebekatt.com, has lived in Greensboro, NC since 1993. She and her husband, Griff, are currently living with five cats and four dogs; all of which are rescues. She says the chaos in their lives is unreal, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. When Susan has the time, she enjoys reading, photography, cycling and entertaining.

Josie was picked up as a stray. We don’t know much about her, but we think she had either been kept in an outside pen or had been wandering around for a while. She does not crate well and requires a companion canine to help with her separation anxiety. Josie is very smart, eager to please and has quickly become accustomed to being an inside girl. She is doing well with her German Shepherd house training and even though she acted Rescue & Adoptions like she had never seen a leash, she quickly overcame her fear of it and does well on leash now. She LOVES to play, is good with other dogs, great with kids and likes cats but is a little rough with them. Josie is very sweet and with a little extra care will make a wonderful addition to the right family. Visit www.gsdrescue.org for more information. n

Harlie is a sweet, 5 year old female. She loves lots of attention, playing outside with kids and chasing after tennis balls. She is a very high energy girl and would be a great companion for a runner, a family with kids and/or another dog. Triad Golden Retriever Rescue She came in underweight, but is beginning to fill out. She absolutely adores children and gets along well with other dogs. She is making progress on learning how to be housebroken, but will need patience. She knows how to sit and shake, and her leash manners are improving daily. Please visit www.tgrr.org for more information. n

Skippy.

Meet Skippy! She is a 2 year old chocolate lab girl that is a ball of energy. She is house-trained, has her basic manners (sometimes food is too much temptation and she counter surfs), and loves to play! Skippy loves going to the beach and playing ball, anything that has to do Lab Rescue of NC with toys. She gets along well with other dogs but should not go to a home with cats. Skippy loves to run with her foster family! She also loves to cuddle and give kisses and is excited to find her perfect match family! Contact www.labrescuenc.org to give Skippy a loving home. n

Bumble Bee (racing name: RWC Bumble Bee) has a wonderful sense of humor. She is the sweetest thing and loves being petted. In fact, she demands attention by splashing her friends with water from her bucket! Her racing career was nothing to brag about, but it was her ticket to early retirement. She would love to be in a home without cats, but with Greyhound Friends lots of love and hands to pet her. Won’t of NC you consider adopting this silly, dark brindle, five-year-old girl? How can you resist her wonderful ears? She’ll be your best friend! For more information, call Blanche Fedor at 336-601-7810, or email greytvolunteer@earthlink.net or visit the Greyhound Friends of North Carolina website at www.greyhoundfriends.com. n

Tahoe is a 2 year old Fox Terrier who was found as a stray living in a neighborhood for months on end, fending for himself. A local family who was feeding him, tried without success to find his owner, then asked us to take him into rescue. Tahoe has now been neutered, microchiped and brought up-to-date on all of his shots, plus he’s heartworm negative. Tahoe is a friendly, spirited dog who loves to play with other dogs in the Finding Great Homes for Jack Russell Terriers rescue. He is leash/crate trained, however, it’s too early to tell if he is house trained. Tahoe weighs about 14 lbs. and is full grown. He’s a smart dog who is friendly to anyone. Tahoe’s adoption fee is $250. To give Tahoe a great home, contact Robin at 336-414-1373 or Robin@insightrecruiters.com. n

Prissy. Hi! Pug Rescue of NC rescued me from a shelter where I came in as a stray. My age remains a mystery, but they think I’m really old. One of my eyes is missing due to glaucoma. Three eye drops a day keeps my other eye working. I’m house broken, up-to-date on all shots, spayed, and heart worm negative. My foster mom says I’m perfect and I follow her all over! She spoils me with lots of treats. I prefer to be an Pug Rescue of NC only child and be with my human all day. I love to sit on the couch with someone while they read or watch tv. Visit www.pugrescuenc.org, email admin@pugrescuenc.org or call 336-312-2983 for details. While the adoption fee is waived for the perfect family, a tax deductible donation would be appreciated! n

Training Your Pet

How to Use Treats in Training by Angela Craven, Moms 4 Paws

T

here are many methods of training out there now, and trying to choose one that works best for you may seem impossible. One of the most popular methods of reward-based training is done using treats as the reward. Most basic obedience training classes use this method to help you teach your dog to associate a word with a behavior. This is also the method many people prefer because it uses a reward to teach your dog versus using negative reinforcement as a teaching tool. The reason this works so well is that most dogs are very food driven. It is part of their nature to be very alert when they smell something that would taste good; therefore, using treats allows you to get their attention. Once you have their attention you are able to teach them to associate a word with a behavior. When your dog does the behavior, you reward them by giving them the food. When you get ready to start this type of training you need to be sure you choose the right treats and reward them at the right moment to avoid accidently teaching bad behaviors. To start, let’s look at which type of treats are the best for this method of training. When thinking in terms of a dog’s senses you want to look for something that will appeal to them, but also be practical for the purpose of training. You appeal to a dog in one sure way,

46

their nose, so choose a treat that would smell great to a dog. Liver treats work well for this. They may smell horrible to you, but your dog will drool when they smell it coming. Be sure that all treats you choose are also soft so they can be broken down to about a dime-sized piece. This helps to insure your pet does not fill up on treats and lose interest in what you are working on. You may also find that your dog may lose interest in one flavor of soft treat, so don’t be afraid to mix it up or even have a mixture of types handy when working with them. Try and avoid using hard treats while trying to teach a new behavior. You want something they can swallow quickly, and then get back to being focused. As always, with any training, take cues from your dog. If they begin to lose interest, go ahead and end with an easy behavior so you finish with a positive experience, then pick back up at another time. Now that you have found a good treat to use while training your dog you can begin the work of teaching them to understand what it is you want them to do. Many people will start with the sit command. This command is one that most dogs can learn rather quickly. When using treats to reward your dog, you want to show them you have something wonderful for them. Then make them get into a sitting position. The most common way to accomplish this is to take the treat, and while placing it in front of your dogs nose, bring it slowly back toward the top of their heads. This will cause many dogs to naturally sit; when they do, say “sit” and reward by giving them the treat. Be sure their bottoms do not leave the floor until after you give them the treat or they will learn to break the command before you have asked them to. As your dog gets better at this you should be able to hold the treat up and say “sit” and they should follow along. When this becomes consistent begin to wean them off the treats by not giving them one every time you ask them to perform the behavior. Instead,

October 2012 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

replace the treats with another form of reward such as a toy, a pat on the head, or even a simple “good dog”. Your dog will eventually start waiting to hear your words “good dog” or “OK” to know when they have done right and when to break from the command given. This does not mean you can never give your dog a treat, but that you want them to behave even if you don’t have the yummy reward at hand. If after trying to get your dog started with basic behavior training on your own you are still struggling to get the results you want, please contact a professional for assistance.
