You know your dog loves Dog Days when... he arrives by himself and checks himself in

On any given day, you might run into Archie and Rusty at Dog Days. Their “parents” usually bring them. But, both dogs have been known to check themselves in! Archie was recently walking on the greenway with his owner. He broke loose from his leash, and darted off to Dog Days, a half mile away! When we opened the door to let him in, he ran straight to the daycare area, a true testament as to how much Archie loves Dog Days.

Rusty, looking out the Dog Days window

Rusty got loose when he was getting out of his owner’s car a few blocks away. Just like Archie, he had one thing on his mind...his friends at Dog Days. He bolted and quickly made his way to Dog Days. Rusty was sitting in the lobby looking out the window when his owner frantically caught up with him a few minutes later. Next time your dog is missing, he may have checked himself in at Dog Days. After all, dogs just wanna have fun!

ur ultra-premium dog food is based on everything we’ve learned from nature, enhanced by the latest advances in science. Zignature’s Physiologically Tuned™ formula means meat first, limited ingredient, hypo-allergenic recipes with a low glycemic index for total canine vitality.

WE NEVER PLAY CHICKEN™

Every recipe crafted in our kitchens is free of the most common potential canine allergens: Corn, Wheat, Soy, Dairy, and Chicken. And when we say free of Chicken, we mean completely free. We don’t use Chicken Eggs, Chicken Meal, or any Chicken ByProducts whatsoever. While very few pet food companies can make this claim, your pet will appreciate that we can.

MEAT WITHOUT THE POTATOES™ While we all consider our pets to be members of the family, their dietary needs are different than ours. As carnivores, they require a diet rich in animal protein. That’s why the first ingredient in any Zignature product will always be quality meat or fish, backed by meat or fish meal as the second ingredient. This isn’t just what your pet craves, it’s what they need to build a soft, silky coat, healthy muscles, and strong bones.

Training Your Pet

Is Your Dog Having a

Hard Time? By James Voyatzis

W

ith springtime weather approaching, parks and city streets become crowded with people walking their dogs. But what happens when your dog can’t walk by another dog without barking, growling, snarling, lunging, jumping, or even snapping? This behavior is stressful, and even embarrassing for the owner. The dog will sense the owner’s anxiety level rising, which will make the dog think there is a threat approaching. Your dog will be labeled “aggressive”, and people quickly learn to avoid you and your “vicious” dog.

They are displaying this behavior because they are extremely uncomfortable with the situation. The most common cause of this behavior is fear, not dominance or protection. As frustrating as this scenario is, you have to remember: your dog is not giving you a hard time, your dog is HAVING a hard time. When off leash and on their own, dogs do not naturally greet other dogs head-on, making direct eye contact. They typically approach from the side, and sniff the other dog’s “junk”. Also, they typically only stay there for a few seconds and then move on. When on leash, they are forced to meet head on. Well intentioned dog owners want their dogs to meet other dogs, and walk them over to the other dog. This forced interaction can cue the dog to fight. The leash also takes away the dog’s “flight” option, creating even more stress for the dog. When the dog can’t take it anymore, the dog attempts to make the other dog go away by the only way he knows how, acting big and bad! The dog learns very quickly that aggressive actions will keep the other dogs away. This conditioned response becomes a ritual, every time another dog enters his personal bubble. Owners fear taking their dog in public, which doesn’t make things better. The good news is, this problem can be fixed with a multi-step approach. First, you must learn to read your dog’s non-verbal calming signals. These signals let the other dog (and you!) know that he is not comfortable with this situation. A few examples see ad on page 6

of these signals are - panting, licking his lips, yawning, and looking away from the stressor. It is important to learn them, so you know when your dog is feeling uncomfortable, before he blows his lid. You must determine the threshold of the dog’s stress to work under that level. Confidence building is the other important part of the training program. The dog needs to learn to feel confident around other dogs. It is extremely important to work with the dog around well socialized and calm dogs. As a trainer, I have the luxury of having a small pack of dogs that I can use to help socialize dogs. Avoiding bad interactions is important, so that reactive behavior isn’t reinforced. The dog’s confidence in the owner is important as well. The dog needs to trust the owner to not force the dog into scary situations. Obedience training, agility, games, and tricks are excellent ways to build a strong and trusting relationship between the dog and owner. Training needs to focus on motivating the dog, and avoid excessive punishment for reactive behavior. On the surface, leash reactive dogs appear to be very dominant. However, the root of the problem relates to the dog’s insecurity, and poor communication. James has always been a lover of animals. He started by training his own dogs in obedience. While working for a local Sheriff’s Office, he witnessed the amazing skill that the department K9s had, and became interested in training working dogs. James attended a school for dog trainers James, Ranger and Trooper where he learned obedience and working dog training. James left the sheriff’s office to pursue his passion and started Sitzen K9 Training. James and his wife Lisa have four dogs (Ranger, Trooper, Cane and Rudder-who is blind) plus a special cat (Halo).

available Meet Lincoln! He is a little scruffy Terrier mix boy who currently weighs 12 lbs. He is three months old and will likely max out around 35 lbs. Lincoln is a fun pup who loves to play! He gets along great with the other dogs in his foster home and loves to be around his people. Lincoln can be a little timid when he first meets new people, but he warms up fairly quickly. He would do well in a home who can be a little patient and continue his training. You can read more about Lincoln online.

ON THE COVER: Lex Lex, a seven year old Beagle mix, was surrendered along with Luke to Forsyth County Animal Control after their owner passed away in February. They’d been living together their whole lives and were like brothers - bonded in every way. When they’re together they “talk” and “sing” to each other in the adorable way that only Beagles can. Unfortunately, their previous owner’s family was not able to continue caring for them after her passing. Lex and Luke’s sad story is a reminder to us all that, while it’s not a pleasant topic of conversation, we should talk to our friends and family about what would happen to our pets if we pass away. Call Forsyth County Animal Control at 336-703-3647 to meet Lex and Luke.

Spring is a Wonderful Season, But, Be Informed About Potential Pets Bunnies

W

ow, April is around the corner and Easter is coming up soon. One of the largest issues that face children and parents is the availability of the CUTE chicks and bunnies at some of the local feed and seed retailers. This is one of the largest headaches for the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and for the communicable disease department. Often we see parents allowing their little ones to kiss, hug, squeeze, and play with both bunnies and chicks. What parents are totally clueless about, is the fact that diseases are easily transmitted to their precious ones by allowing this type of handling. Coccidia runs rampant along with salmonella in most of those cute, stressed out, mostly sick chicks that have been dumped into boxes, shipped across states and thrown into those pens inside the stores with other stressed out chicks. They are shedding coccidian and salmonella like nobody’s business and these kids are picking it up. Why, you ask, are more children not falling ill and possibly dying? The reason: parents think it’s from the food they ate, the excess candy, the excitement and very often do not link the disease to the visit to the stores at all. I have always wondered why we can’t step up and just prevent the perversity of this type of animal abuse to occur, but we unfortunately, think it’s about as cute as puppies in the pet store or a local flea market.

Chicks

Chicks can make good pets, but they need to be kept outdoors in a well protected environment. They can be very social and can be taught to interact with humans. If you get a hen, you can have eggs, without having to have a rooster. Because it is very difficult to house-train a chicken, or most birds for that matter, having them indoors can lead to some severe issues. There are some great chicken houses that you can build and it will still allow you to have fun with your chickens without having a disease issue. Don’t forget, if your chickens, fowls or birds get sick, we do see them and treat them. Do not wait until they are in such poor health that there is nothing we can do. Remember that birds will pretend that they are eating, to keep the rest of the flock from attacking them. If you are not seeing poop, they are not eating.

10

April 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

The bunnies, they simply get stressed to the max, if they are semilucky they survive to live in a miserable hutch the rest of their lives, with very little human contact, stimulation or joy. Oh Boy! If I seem a little out of sorts, well, I think parents need to stop and consider that these animals will live at least 7-10 years if properly cared for. The parents (children do not pay the bills for food, vet care, nor do they truly understand husbandry) are the ones that need to understand that they must take care of the animals, they must interact with them, they must handle them. The long and short of it is that these poor bunnies, typically, do not have a very good life. Bunnies can and do make excellent pets when properly cared for, handled, and trained. They can be litter trained. They can and do play and interact with humans, they can be very relaxing and they can be kenneled when you are not home. The downside is that they shed, their urine can stain, and more people are allergic to bunnies than to dogs and cats. We do recommend that they be spayed or neutered, this makes a much better pet. Because females tend to develop ovarian cancer at about age 5-6, this also prevents that heartbreak, so we recommend spaying at about age 12 weeks. Male bunnies can become very aggressive when unneutered and we find that neutering at about the age of 12 weeks, works very well. Please remember that we see bunnies. Once per year, they should have a physical exam to ensure that all is well. As they get older, bloodwork is a very good idea.

Although bunnies and chickens (not roosters) can make good pets, it is best to be aware of the source from which you purchase your Easter pets. Get them from someone you trust—a local farmer, or order them from your mill or a trusted feed and seed store.

She came to us heartworm positive but has been treated and is now healthy and ready for her new forever home! She was definitely someone’s house dog as she makes herself at home and also loves to ride in the car! She is very attached to her humans so a home where she would be the only dog would be best for her (although she does get along with most other dogs), also gets along with cats. She has been spayed, up-to-date on all vaccinations, heartworm negative and on monthly prevention, and will be Spay Stokes microchipped before adoption. She walks well on a leash, knows how to sit and loves to give lots of kisses! Email us at: arsc2004@gmail.com. Her adoption fee is $150.00. n

Cover Story Forsyth County Animal Control:

Make a Difference

By Tonya Ward

L

ooking to make a difference? Here at Forsyth County Animal Control (FCAC) we have many opportunities available for you. Each month FCAC has Volunteer Orientations that include a tour and details on how to become a part of the FCAC Team as a shelter host, animal care provider, or numerous other opportunities like joining Hiking Hounds, a group which takes our adoptable dogs out twice per month to a local park for a few hours. We also have an Advisory Board made up of community members who volunteer their time to assist with setting policies and making recommendations to the Forsyth County Commissioners. Each year, hundreds of our neighbors donate their time to help the homeless animals at our shelter. In 2016 alone, our volunteers put in approximately eight thousand hours helping the animals in our adoption program! We encourage you to stop by and discuss how you can help make a difference by being part of a dedicated team of like-minded individuals who strive to make the world a better place for animals and people alike. Orientations for volunteers age 16 and older are held the first Saturday and third Tuesday of each month at the Animal Shelter. Orientation begins promptly at 3:00 pm Saturday or 6:00 pm Tuesday and lasts approximately one hour. It is the first step to volunteering with us and we look forward to meeting you. Check the calendar of events on our website for additional information. We also accept donations such as blankets, towels, and washable toys. Too young to volunteer? Many local school kids have fun creating donation drives to aid the animals, and some have even asked for donatable items instead of presents on their birthdays.

We also partner with many local organizations like Project Pearl, who sponsored 81 cats and 24 dogs for a total of $6,431 in sponsorships throughout 2016! These sponsorships pay a portion of the adoption fee in order to help animals who may be overlooked (like older dogs or cats) have a better chance at being adopted. Their medical foster program gave second chances to 68 animals who otherwise would not have qualified for our adoption program. If you are interested in making a donation to assist with sponsorships or medical fosters, you can contact Project Pearl at projectpearl@triad.rr.com. Project Pearl’s Lend a Lens program has local professional photographers taking amazing photos of our adoptable animals which go a long way in helping them find their forever homes. In 2016, 1,251 animals were adopted and 328 were transferred to our Community Care Partner (CCP) programs, who agree to follow adoption requirements such as spaying and neutering the animals in their care. The Community Care and Almost Home programs provide additional adoption, rescue and foster care resources for the Forsyth County Animal Shelter. Currently, over 40 animal rescue, welfare, veterinarian and professional organizations participate in the Community Care and Almost Home Programs. We’d like to recognize AARF, Forsyth Humane Society, Schnauzer Rescue of the Carolinas, and Siamese Cat Rescue as well as numerous other CCP organizations who take the time to transfer animals from our care into their facilities or foster homes. Spring is here and in addition to warmer weather, that means it’s time for the start of our Forsyth County Rabies Clinics. These annual events continue to increase our goal to have all pets in

Forsyth County current on their rabies vaccination. Please mark your calendars for April 22 from 9:00-11:00 am. For only $5 per animal, pet owners can get their dogs, cats, and ferrets vaccinated against rabies. All dogs must be leashed and cats and ferrets housed in a carrier. FCAC had FIVE two hour rabies clinics in 2016 where we provided over a thousand rabies vaccines We are looking forward to another great series of events this year and can’t wait to meet even more of your wonderful pets. Rabies vaccination, tag, and certificate is provided. Please see our website for more details on our upcoming clinics , as well as pet licensing requirements in Forsyth County. (forsyth.cc/AnimalControl) With all the new flowers and trees blooming, it’s a great time for a reminder that spring and summer also bring new puppies and kittens each year. Spaying and neutering your pets not only results in fewer unwanted animals, there are numerous health benefits for them as well. Since FCAC partnered with community animal interest organizations to initiate a targeted Spay Neuter program in 2011, we have seen a 27.5% reduction in our intake of animals. We hope to be offering vouchers again in 2017 in conjunction with our local partner organizations. Please watch our website for more information.

Lex

Luke and Lex are hoping today’s sunset will bring them the promise of a new home. Luke, an eight year old Beagle, and Lex, a seven year old Beagle mix, were surrendered to Forsyth County Animal Control after their owner passed away in February. They had been living together their whole lives and were like brothers - bonded in every way. When they’re together they “talk” and “sing” to each other in the adorable way that only Beagles can. Unfortunately, their previous owner’s family was not able to continue caring for them after her passing. Luke and Lex’s sad story is a reminder to us all that, while it’s not a pleasant topic of conversation, we should talk to our friends and family about what would happen to our pets if we pass away. Try to have a plan in place, both temporarily (in case of a long illness or hospitalization) as well as a permanent plan should that become necessary.

Vet’s Corner Dr. Meekins was born in Columbia, SC and was raised in Greensboro, NC. She earned a BS in Animal Science from North Carolina State University and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from North Carolina State University in 1995. Her senior year she received the Pfizer Scholarship Award for Research Excellence. Upon graduating from Veterinary School, Dr. Meekins worked for three years in a small animal practice in Kernersville, NC and then spent three years working at an emergency clinic before coming to Cobb Animal Clinic. Currently she shares her home with her husband Hayes, their two sons Hayes Gina E. Meekins, DVM and Ryan, and Riley their daughter. They also enjoy spending time with “Beason” their Golden Retriever and “Kuechly,” their kitten adopted from Cobb Animal Clinic!

Recognizing

Chronic Pain “Doc, I just don’t want my pet to be in pain.” As a veterinarian, I have heard this statement many times. Usually it is after an animal suffers an acute injury, illness, or in an end of life situation. I think we all feel this way. I mean, who wants to watch their beloved family member suffer? Acute pain is usually obvious, and when we see our pets in pain, we treat it. What if we did not recognize their pain, however? Chronic pain, also known as maladaptive pain, can be much harder to see in our pets. This pain, caused by such things as cancer, degenerative disease, or arthritis, can be slow in onset, continuous, or intermittent. Just as people who experience chronic pain can continue to function daily, animals continue with their routines. They may still greet you with a wagging tail, chase a ball, squirrel, or bird, and go on their nightly walks, all without obvious complaint. This is because it is common for animals to mask their pain. Instinctively, this can be protective, since showing weakness can make an animal more vulnerable to a predator. Because of the difficulty in recognizing the symptoms, chronic pain often goes unnoticed and it is assumed our pets are just “getting older” and “slowing down.” If not recognized and treated, our pets will continue to suffer in silence, robbing them of a good quality of life. So how do we know? What do we look for? Well, signs in dogs and cats can differ slightly. Dogs may show a reluctance to jump on the bed or couch, or into the car, and show a hesitation going up or down stairs. They may not play ball as long, or walk as far as they used to. Some may be stiff in the morning, reluctant or slow to get up, or even have a slight limp which they walk out of during the day. Panting excessively, or restlessness at night can also be a sign. Some dogs sit or lay in odd positions to take the pressure off of their joints, while some just seem to sleep more than normal. Behavioral changes such as irritability, aggressiveness, or snapping when touched or groomed in certain areas can also indicate pain. Interestingly, crying or whimpering is not the most common response.

April 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

If symptoms of pain are not recognized and treated, our pets will continue to suffer in silence, robbing them of a good quality of life.

It may be even more difficult to assess pain in a cat than a dog. Cats are masters at hiding pain. In some studies, it was shown that as many as 1 in 3 cats suffer from arthritis, but only around 7% are actually treated. Why is this? Cats like routine, and they are motivated to continue their routine. It is easy to miss the signs when a cat is doing their best to compensate. Subtle signs may include not jumping up to their favorite perches, hesitation before jumping, or not quite making their jumps and climbing up the rest of the way. They may also stop grooming themselves because it hurts, or miss the litterbox because painful hips make it difficult to climb over the edges. Chronic pain may also cause personality changes in a cat. A once personable and friendly cat may become moody or hide from physical interaction. Just the opposite, a once aloof cat may now overtly seek attention or cuddling. Like dogs, crying is not frequently seen.

“Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.”—Unknown So, what do you do if you suspect that your pet is in pain? The best approach is to take them to your veterinarian for a good physical exam. Even then it still may be difficult to determine the extent of pain an animal is in. In this case, it may be worth treating for pain and observing the response. There are many options available to treat pain such as medications, dietary supplements, rehabilitation and alternative therapies including laser and acupuncture. Your veterinarian can help you decide on the right treatment for your animal. It is important to be proactive in detecting pain in animals. The earlier we intervene, the better chance we have at providing our pets with a long active and happy life.

Chauncey.

Hi! My name is Chauncey! I am a two year old Labrador mix looking for my forever home. I am a cuddly boy with quite the playful side who can be a bit shy at first, but once you gain my trust, I am the most loyal friend. My favorite activities include wrestling with other pups, doing morning yoga, and getting belly/chin rubs. I have big hazel eyes and smiley lips that are sure to win you over. I just know that once I find the right home, I will be the most loving companion. Are you the family for me? Patsy. Hey there! I’m Patsy and I sure do love people! I’m a young adult with a heart of gold and a smile that will knock your socks off! I love lounging with my people on a comfortable couch after a long day of play but I also love exploring the great outdoors, hiking and schmoozing with the people I meet along the way. I do need to work a bit on my leash manners and I’m not particularly fond of other dogs without proper introductions but I’m otherwise a sweet girl with a great disposition who’s ready to find her forever home! Are you the home for me? Call 336-438-2023, visit www.hsaconline.org or send an email to hsacinfo@gmail.com for more information. n

He is a 3-year old grey and white tabby with beautiful markings and a big purr. Schmooze is a teddy bear who wants nothing more than to cuddle, “make biscuits”, and rub his giant head against you. He loves attention and has a very laid back attitude. Schmooze enjoys playing with toys but is also content to just have a lap to sit in. He is litter-trained and enjoys getting belly rubs and being brushed. Will you be the lucky fam-

My name is R2 but friends call me Raisin because I’m just so sweet! I am a Boxer and Labrador mix who loves to take long strolls around the block or hike any of North Carolina’s beautiful parks. I so enjoy the outdoors and could use a little more leash training…however, I’m eager to learn if you’re eager to teach me! I already know to “sit” and “shake paws” and love to show my tricks off for kids, especially when treats are involved! I enjoy spending time with my people, lounging on the couch after some exercise and I’ll keep myself entertained while you’re out and about. I’m already housebroken, up-to-date on vaccines, and ready to move in with you!

Meow Meow

to be one of the sweetest cats you’ll ever meet! I was found as a stray late last year and brought into the local shelter where I gave birth to kittens, all of whom have since been adopted. I took great care of them and now it’s my turn to leave my “foster” nest! I have been spayed and am completely up-to-date on my vaccines. I am very calm, love affectionate pats and caresses and I love a good chat as well, tipping my head to the side as I listen to your end of the conversation. I would love to find a safe and loving forever home...will you be my family?

is a domestic medium hair calico who is approximately a year old. She is an avid bird watcher, catcher of stray moths and connoisseur of sunny lounging spots. A perfect day for Meow Meow includes playing with her stuffed mouse or laser pointer, basking in sunlight and snoozing quietly while you do human things. She prefers two tummy rubs, but not three, and MUST be allowed to greet you at the door when you return home. She gets along well with other cats but would do best in a home with no dogs or small children. She will come when called or when she decides it’s time for food. If your family is in the market for a furry forever friend, then Ms. Meow Meow might be the ticket!

Binx

Tiger

is a happy, fun-loving 25 pound 1 to 2 year old with a charming puppy personality. He is a bouncy, confident boy with lots of youthful energy. He is affectionate and very sociable with people. Binx needs an active family that enjoys taking him on walks and playing with him. He adores toys and is pretty good at fetch. He sits on command for treats and quickly learns new things. He has a boisterous enthusiasm that matches well with submissive females but might offend another take-charge male so he would be a great only dog or dear friend to a sweet female. Adoption donation $175.

is a happy 7 year old 40 pound Aussie/Retriever mix. He acts like he had a good life before falling on hard times that left him alone and covered in itchy fleas. He has been bathed, treated, and is growing back his full handsome coat. Tiger is a very friendly, easygoing boy who loves to be touched and adored. He is attentive to people and was obviously well trained at some point. He seems to be used to being an only dog and can be dominant with other dogs. He is great with people and would make a lovely only dog in his new home. He is good on the leash. No kitties in his new home, please. Adoption donation $150.

Meadow

Hi, my name is Winslow and I am an 8 pound senior Yorkie, maybe 10? I’m a lovable guy who likes every person and every little dog I have met so far. I think life is grand and I am easygoing and confident so you can take me with you to all kinds of places. I have plenty of energy for walks. I don’t hear very well but I don’t care. I just went to the dentist and am missing most of my teeth. See my cute tongue hanging out? Anyway, I’m a pretty swell guy and am looking for someone who will take me on walks, snuggle a lot, and give me plenty of tummy rubs. I will happily share a home with any nice dog if you want. Adoption donation $150.

is a special girl who was rescued from a horrific situation. Her owner died, a hoarder who left 32 dogs living in squalor, many of them chained to various things in the yard or shed. She is really starting to enjoy her life now, probably for the first time ever, and gaining confidence. She is comfortable with and loving to her people friends at the shelter and has even learned to play with balls and such. She still has a lot to learn about the world and needs an experienced owner. She is 35 pounds and a young adult. Adoption donation $125.

She is a friendly, confident, easygoing and cheerful pup who likes to be obedient. She is good on the leash. He had no mother or siblings on premises, so we don’t know where he started out. The resident of the trailer told friends of one of our volunteers that, “If he lived ‘til his move out date, he was up for grabs.” Needless to say, he went home to one of our volunteers that very instant and in for vet care the next day. Spanky Smith is about 10 The Fort Rescue weeks old, weighs 10 lbs, and aside from being thin, is in great health! He is thriving in foster care but is ready for a forever home! Contact us for more information at thefortrescue@gmail.com. n

Ralph

Sprinkles

came to Red Dog Farm when his owner could no longer care for Ralph. This goofy hound dog is such a good boy. Ralph is a little over a year old and is a Coon/Bloodhound mix. He came to Red Dog Farm when his owner got a promotion at work and now works very long hours and did not have the time he deserved. He is great with kids, other dogs, and is fine with chill cats. As Ralph is still young, he will need a home that will have the time to exercise and train him to become an even better dog than he already is. Ralph likes to walk in the park, go for car rides, and snuggle up on the couch! This boy would be a great addition to almost any home!

came to us with her sister kitten, Mist. This kitten is too cute and so lovable! Sprinkles came to Red Dog Farm when a really nice family found her and her sister and took them in but was at their max pet capacity, so they asked us to help find them forever homes! Sprinkles is outgoing but still just as sweet and is a purr machine! This girl likes to interact with other animals in a home. She has been exposed to other cats, dogs, kids and is well socialized. Sprinkles would make a great addition to any home!

Do you have room for this sweet boy in your heart and home? If so please fill out the application online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

If you would like to adopt her, please fill out the application online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Smiley Bruce

JR

is the last of his siblings to find his forever home. He is a Syrian Hamster and is about 4 months old now. JR is super sweet. His favorite thing is to play on his wheel! JR’s adoption fee is $10. If you are interested in adopting JR visit www.reddogfarm.com. n

Jake

26

has been bounced around a lot in his six years. His original owner surrendered him to animal control and a good samaritan pulled him from the shelter and found Bruce his next home. Bruce went to his next home with a family for two years but was returned to the good samaritan after a death in the family. Now Smiley Bruce is in a new foster home and is reported to be a real sweetheart! We would love to see Bruce go to a place with another pig or have another pig adopted with him. We were told he has never lived with a pig friend. Bruce’s feet and tusks have recently been trimmed and he is ready for his forever home. Smiley Bruce’s adoption fee will be $150. If you are able to welcome this adorable face into your family please fill out an application online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Frank. We are beginning to

is a kind and gentle 13 year old Saddlebred/Quarter Horse cross that stands approximately 15hh. He was surrendered by his owners that could no longer afford to care for him. They knew Jake had sight problems and believed he was moon blind but when Jake was examined by our vet it was determined he is totally blind. He is now happily living in a paddock with a mini horse as a companion.

think that we should have named Frank “Beast” instead. This handsome fella seems to have been forgotten by the general public. He has a good heart and soul but much like the Beast he is a little rough around the edges. He can be a little head strong and needs someone who won’t let him get away with much. He is eager to learn and please and has done well with his basic training. Frank is ready to find his true love. He would do best as an only dog with someone who is active as well as someone who just likes to relax.

To learn more about Jake please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n

Could you be this “Beast’s” soul mate or rather his “Belle” or “Beau”? Visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information. n

Mariah is a pretty tortie stubby Manx girl. The vet estimates she was born sometime in 2013, maybe around October. She was abandoned outside with 2 kittens. The kittens quickly found homes and she came to TCR. Mariah isn’t fond of being picked up and held, but will climb into your lap for a snuggle on her own as soon as you sit down. She loves to be petted and rubbed, and adores cat beds. She also likes to Tailless Cat Rescue sleep on you at night, and would make a good lumberjack, she can stay on top even when you roll over to your side. Like many torties she doesn’t like to be manhandled and has been known to hiss and swat when you try to force her into something so she wouldn’t be suitable for a home with small children. She does fine with other cats, but would also do fine as an only cat. Mariah is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped and is FeLV/FIV negative.

Meet Honey.

She is an 8 year old Boxer Mix. Honey was begrudgingly surrendered by her original owner who could not take her where she was moving. We gladly took Honey into our rescue to find her a new home. Honey is 50 lbs. of love. We have not had her here long so we don’t know too much about Honey but we do know that she is a very sweet dog! Honey is great with our staff and our other dogs. If you are looking for a sweet fun loving playmate, Honey could be the companion for you! Call SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 for more information. n

Little Man

Stallone.

If you want a new friend to help you work out and build up your upper body strength, Stallone is the one for you! Stallone is a 2 year old Terrier, Pit Mix that is ready to get his second chance for a good home! He was taken to our local shelter and surrendered as a stray. Our wonderful director decided that Stallone needed to come to our rescue so we could find him a home. Chosen by our director, the name Stallone is a very appropriate choice. Though very strong, Stallone is a great dog. He will need some training to learn to walk on a leash better. Stallone might warm up to other animals given the chance to meet them. Call SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 for more information. n

Buster

was brought to our rescue by his owner who could no longer care for him. He is a 6 year old Chihuahua Mix. Though a little scared when first approached, with a little time he could become your new best friend. If you are willing to give Little Man time to get to know you, come on in and meet him and consider the possibility of adopting him. He needs a second chance at a new home.

is a male orange tabby. He and some friends were found as strays in a park and brought into our rescue. It took no time for our staff to fall in love with Buster. He is a very sweet and friendly cat. Buster is a dominant male and may want to live in a house as the only cat. We don’t know if he likes dogs but he does not like our other cats. If you would like to take Buster into your home, he would make a great addition to your family.

Mary

is one of the sweetest cats you will ever meet. Brought in as a stray, she caught the hearts of us all. She is very petite in size, approximately 2 years old. Mary loves to cuddle and purr to her heart’s content. She seems to get along with our other cats and kittens as well. Maybe Mary is the new addition to your family you have been looking for. Rhett

Ghost.

is a domestic short hair neutered male. He was born outdoors, we believe about 8/20/16. He is black and white. His tail has been broken at the tip. He likes to head butt you and be held close and petted. He really enjoys flying toys with feathers. He has great paw and eye control, catching it every time. He likes to roll balls too. He’s still a bit skittish around others but is learning to trust. He loves his sister Scarlett. He needs a forever person to continue making him more relaxed. Rhett is neutered, tested negative for FIV/FeLV and is up-to-date on shots.

I was dumped in a feral cat colony near a local apartment complex. The cats in the colony did not welcome me and were beating me up quite frequently as I am not a pushy fellow. A nice lady called AARF for help and they took me in. I’m a very sweet and laid back kitty now that I have a safe place. You might even call me a lap cat. I’m about 4 years old. I’m FIV+ but hope that won’t keep you from considering me. I’m a lover, not a fighter.

Aldo was adopted from us when he was an adolescent. Six years went by, and then came a call from a veterinarian’s office that had Aldo. The original adopter eventually was unable to keep him, and Aldo then went through several homes before coming back to us. Aldo returned to us with heartworms, intestinal worms and had lost most of his hair. Happily, his sweet spirit Doberman Rescue of the Triad remains intact. He is obedient, very lovable and loves to play and to be made of. The heartworms and intestinal worms will be treated and cured, and testing is continuing to determine the cause of the hair loss to see if corrective measures may help. In the meantime, he’s very happy to wear a coat when he is outside. If you can absolutely provide a loving, nurturing, forever home for Aldo, make an appointment to meet him once your application is approved. Read more about Aldo online at www.doberman-rescue.com. n

A Kiss Is Not Just a Kiss National Pet Dental Health Month is over and your pet's teeth are free of bacteria, plaque and calculi. The mouth odor is gone. Your pet is kissable again. Now is the time to begin some simple steps to maintain your pet's oral health. Daily brushing with an enzymatic tooth paste is still the gold standard for oral health, but some pets (especially felines) are unappreciative of our good intentions. Other great options include adding dental diets, dental chews, oral rinses and plaque preventing food additives. Without daily oral care, dental disease quickly returns as your pet's mouth repopulates with harmful bacteria.
