Training Your Pet

CANINE FITNESS TRAINING

W

e all know it is important for us to exercise. Well, the same applies for your dog. The following exercises will help strengthen your dog and improve his balance and coordination. Each can be performed at home in only a few minutes. Make it fun for your dog by using food treats to teach him these exercises and to keep him interested. Treats should be small (pea-sized) and something your dog finds very tasty.

1. SIT-TO-STAND: This exercise strengthens the muscles in your dog’s rear legs. Your dog should be able to sit with both rear legs bent and tucked under his body. If your dog sits on one side or with one leg straighter than the other, please consult your veterinarian before attempting this exercise. To perform this exercise: • Have your dog stand in front of you. • Ask your dog to sit. If your dog does not know “sit”, use a treat to lure him into a sit. When your dog sits, say “yes” in a cheerful voice and take a step back so he has to stand to get his treat. • Ask him to sit again. Say “yes” and step back to give him the treat. • Start with two or three repetitions and work up to 10. It is better to do fewer repetitions with good form than to do more repetitions with poor form. • Once your dog can do 10 sit-to-stands with good form, make the exercise more challenging by asking him to sit and stand on a sofa cushion or mattress. Again, start with two or three repetitions and build up to 10 repetitions. • To further increase the challenge, ask him to sit and stand with his front feet on a platform. See #3 for how to teach your dog to put his front feet on a platform. 2. FIGURE EIGHTS: This exercise helps with your dog’s balance and shifts his weight from side to side. Set up two objects (cones or chairs) about eight feet apart. Walk your dog around the objects in a figure eight. Start with walking two or three figure eights and work up to 10 figure eights. Remember to use treats to keep your dog interested. If you want some creative ways to do figure eights, use treats to lure your dog to spin to his right and left; to go around you from right to left and from left to right; and to weave between your legs (if you have a dog small enough). Then, combine these to form a figure eight. For example, with your dog standing in front of you: • Ask him to spin to his left and then weave under your left leg.

10

August 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

By: Shari Bryant Stoney Creek Pet Lodge and Rehab Center

• Ask him to spin to his right and then go around you from your left to right. • Ask him to spin to his right and then spin to his left.

3. PLATFORM WORK: This exercise helps your dog with rear-end awareness. Platforms can be made from an upside down bowl, or old phone books, catalogs, or mats taped together. The width of the platform should be slightly more than the distance between your dog’s shoulders. The height would depend on the size of your dog, but generally two to six inches. Cover the platform with non-slip material. To perform this exercise: • Place the platform on the floor between you and your dog. • Hold a treat in front of you near the side of the platform closest to you. When your dog steps on the platform, say “yes”, and give him the treat. • Next, hold a treat in front of you near your dog’s nose, take a small step to the right around the platform. When your dog moves one of his rear feet say “yes”, and give him the treat. • Continue taking steps to the right until you make a complete circle around the platform. Remember to say “yes” and give your dog treats for moving his rear feet. • Now, repeat to the left of the platform. • Be patient. It may take a while for your dog to realize he can move only his rear feet. Also, you may find it is easier for your dog to go one way or the other. If your dog cannot keep his front feet on the platform when moving his rear feet, try a slightly higher platform. Remember to go slow, give your dog lots of encouragement and treats, and have fun! These exercises are the foundation of rehabilitation work that can help your dog later in life. Help keep your dog fit now for a longer, healthier life later—all while enjoying quality time your furry friend will love!! Shari Bryant enjoys helping people teach their dogs to be great family companions using reward-based training methods. She is the owner of Bryant Family Dog Training, LLC and teaches Basic and Intermediate Manners classes at Stoney Creek Pet Lodge and Rehab Center in Whitsett. She shares her home with her husband, Duane, and Jace, her Silken Windhound.

Cover Story

Guilford County Animal Shelter: Connecting Hands, Hearts & Paws by Drew Brinkley, Animal Services Director

Tori

T

here’s a sad reality that Guilford County Animal Shelter (GCAS) staff and volunteers are faced with every day – the Triad has a pet overpopulation crisis on our hands. Especially during the spring, it often seems like it is quite literally raining cats and dogs. Just ask intake staff at GCAS, who took in a whopping 586 animals during a recent two-week period. GCAS is committed to providing the best possible care to every pet while it is waiting for its forever home, and with the community’s help, we aim to reduce the number of animals being brought to the shelter. Our shelter is fortunate to have the expertise of Dr. McAndrew, who is one of a small group of veterinarians in the country that are specially trained in shelter medicine. Shelter medicine is a rapidly developing specialty field that is aimed at ensuring shelter animal wellbeing while protecting public health. Unlike in private practice where the focus is solely on the health of each individual animal, shelter medicine demands focused expertise on managing the health of the overall population as well. In shelters, multiple animals share common air, living space and caretaker attention, which increases stress and potential for disease transmission. The health and welfare of the population influences the health and welfare of each animal and, in turn, the health of those individuals influences the wellbeing of the population. Currently, only three veterinary schools in the nation offer residency programs in the shelter medicine specialty. Dr. McAndrew is a graduate of the College of Veterinarian Medicine at N.C. State University and completed the University of Wisconsin/University of Davis ASPCA Shelter Medicine Fellowship Program. Since arriving at GCAS, Dr. McAndrew has worked diligently to improve the overall health of our shelter while providing individualized care to the many animals that come through our doors. She has launched several initiatives that have saved the lives of numerous animals, such as creating a dedicated parvo ward to treat affected puppies without infecting the larger population. Parvo

12

August 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

is a highly contagious disease that many vets are hesitant to treat – or may even refuse to treat – because of the high risk of contagion, which is what makes Dr. McAndrew’s commitment to this initiative so special, as she’s helping ensure that these impacted puppies are given a chance to survive and eventually find a loving home. The story of one dog, China Beans, exemplifies the compassion held by Dr. McAndrew and the rest of the GCAS staff. When China Beans came to the shelter, she was suffering from a very serious infection in her face. While many animal specialists would have recommended euthanasia, Dr. McAndrew recognized a fighting spirit in China Beans and instead, spent her afternoons treating and reconstructing China Beans’ face. After months of treatment and rehabilitation, China Beans is almost completely healed and ready to find her forever family.

Unlike a no-kill shelter that is able to select which animals it accepts into its facility, GCAS is an open-admission shelter. This means we must accept and care for every animal that is brought to us. Regardless of the animal’s medical or behavioral needs, we do everything we can to care for that animal and make sure it has the best quality of life possible. Despite our size as the third largest open-admission facility in North Carolina (by intake numbers for dogs and cats), we pride ourselves on positively impacting animals’ lives – last year, we took in nearly 10,000 cats and dogs, but of the top 10 largest shelters in the state, we have the highest adoption and owner return rates, and lowest euthanasia rate. Still, we know there’s much more work to be done.

GCAS has launched several initiatives to improve the care we are able to provide to our community’s animals. From fiscal year 2016

to fiscal year 2017, our adoption rate is up 13% and our euthanasia rate has dropped more than 30%. We are implementing new ways to help continue to improve these rates and lower our intake numbers, such as managing the number of surrendered pets by asking individuals to set appointments. When an individual brings a pet in for surrender, we also try to determine why they are surrendering their pet and what resources we can provide to them; this way, they can potentially retain ownership of their pet or find other rehoming options, rather than relinquishing it to the shelter. We are also researching several potential sites for a new shelter that will allow us to better serve our human and animal community. We are also relaunching our SPOT mobile truck, which should be up and running during the third quarter of this year. This will help increase the number of spay/neuters in our community and reduce the number of animals brought to us. In addition, GCAS has an established network of volunteers and transfer partners that lend support and assistance in caring for our large population of animals, and we continue to plan community events that increase awareness of the significant number of pets in need of homes.

In 2016, GCAS received approximately $233,000 raised by the Guilford County community in honor of Susie, the puppy whose story sparked tougher animal abuse laws statewide. Susie’s Fund is to be used for the medical treatment of abused, injured or neglected animals. A dog named Thor will be our first candidate. He came to us with severe injuries to his leg, and Susie’s Fund will allow us to treat him so he can soon go to a forever home. We have other dogs lined up to benefit from Susie’s Fund in the coming months and will continue to seek out candidates.

Want to Help? As any member of the animal-loving community will tell you, we are faced with major problems that require a series of major solutions. We are committed to providing the best possible care for the animals and families in our area, but we can only succeed with the help of our community. You Triad Independent Cat Rescue can see her stripes and unique coloring. Evie’s fur is very, very short...not sure what her lineage is, but it definitely made for one beautiful girl. Cannoli.

I’m a real sweet girl and I love to play with my siblings, Mario, Rocky Balboa and Luigi. We all love to jump in and out of boxes and play with our ball toy. I’m very friendly and when it’s time to nap I love to sleep beside my brother Rocky Balboa, who looks just like me. I get along great with the big cats in the house but I don’t bother them because I play with my siblings! It would be great if I got adopted with one of them! I was born in early June 2017. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Harper Lee.

Donut.

My name is Donut and like a jelly donut I am full of sweetness. I am very playful and love chasing my foster brothers and sisters. I’m a real cuddle bug when you pick me up -- my purr is like a jet engine! I was found alone under a bush, so I don’t know what happened to the rest of my family. I’m glad the nice lady who found me called AARF because now I have a chance to get my very own home. DOB: April 1, 2017. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Mia.

I am Harper Lee and I am the mother of 5 kittens, Emily D, Lord Byron, Beckett, Hemingway and Thoreau. I have been an amazing mother to my kittens, but this is my last litter. I am 2 years old and was recently spayed. I am a beautiful torbie and I get along with everyone. My fosters have a small dog and 2 adult cats and we get along very well. I like to explore and check out the scenery. Now that my kittens are eating on their own, I am looking for prospective humans to take care of.

I’m a big-eyed, full of life, medium haired tabby, who is sweet, snuggly and full of playful love. I was bottle-fed and really liked the special attention I got from the foster family holding me close and feeding me warm milk. I’ll do tricks to get attention and treats. I like to chase pipe cleaners and balls with bells, and yes, I do share my toys with my sister, Riley. I’m a good girl and I get along with older cats, younger cats and children. I play nice, I like to snuggle and I love attention. DOB: 4/13/17.

Oscar

Hey guys! I’m Sam, a.k.a., Sam-I-Am. Honestly, I’m really not a Dr. Seuss character! I guess I AM a character though. See, I have never known a Cat Mama, only my two human moms...my bottle feeding mom and my foster parents that took me as a kitten teenager. I really have no idea I’m not human! I’m in love with the two German Shepherds and all the cats and kittens that share this home, but I really would like to have my very own family and a home for all my toys! I love to cuddle and give kitten kisses, I don’t snore and I don’t take up a lot of space.

is a unique short-medium hair kitten with beautiful green eyes. He loves to play and cuddle! Oscar also loves laying on his back while you scratch his tummy. He loves to climb his cat tree, wrestle with his siblings, chase the laser pointer, cuddle and he also likes being held. Oscar is a very welladjusted and loving kitten who is great around people, children and other animals! Oscar is up-to-date on his shots and tested negative for FIV and FeLV. DOB: May 2017.

Opie. I’m a mellow, muscular, orange boy, about four years of age. When I arrived at FCAP I had “pillow feet’’ and was underweight. Now I enjoy romping with other cats then relaxing to observe my kingdom. I like to gently pat you as you prepare my food or pet my head, simply to let you know . . . I’m calm, yet in charge. Neutered, vaccinated, and FeLV/ FIV negative, I’m ready to settle

into your home. Adoption fee is $50. Please contact feralcatassistance.org or 336-378-0878. n

FORSYTH HUMANE SOCIETY 336.721.1303 / www.forsythhumane.org

Dolly

Holly

is a two year old female cat who has been with us since early March. Her ideal home would be in a quiet, indoor environment where she can relax and spend time looking out the window. She enjoys her solitude, and would do well as an only cat, but could also live with another well-socialized cat or two. Dolly is a sweet gal, who just wants a home to call her own.

is an 11 month old Manchester Terrier Mix, who originally came to us in November of 2016. She is a giant bundle of energy in a pint size package. At 11 months, she weighs in at just over 30 lbs. She is a dominant, highly intelligent, tennis ball motivated, and eager-to-learn working dog who needs a job to do. Her ideal home would be with an experienced, patient owner (or couple) without kids, who is willing to give her the training she needs to succeed. Holly would do best in a home where she could run to expend her energy before working on training, whether that be in a large fenced-in yard, or out with an active owner.

Call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303 for more information. n

Bandit

Anchovy

is such a funny cat. He could probably be happy in a home with other pets or by himself. He is both playful and cuddly, depending on his mood. He likes dog toys better than most cat toys. He is very affectionate and has been friendly to guests. Anchovy alternates between lying in laps and running around. He climbs on top of everything and loves to scratch, however, he took to the cardboard scratch box right away, and hasn’t scratched up the furniture. He will steal any food he can get to, including the dog’s food. He’s good about using his litter box and is perfect for someone who wants an active but affectionate cat with a big personality!

is looking for a special home that will love her and assist her in taking control of her diabetes. In return she will gladly give you lots of love. Bandit is self aware and knows that a lady does her business outside. She is an Australian Shepherd Miniature mix.

Call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303 for information. n

Call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303 for information. n

Rose & Joe

are currently in the same foster family together. They love each other, though realize that sometimes in life you have to grow up and make your own loving family. Each morning is filled with a morning warm-up run, a kiss, another warm-up game and then a cuddle to warm up to the day. Rose and Joe both appreciate a good chew toy and now realize that their foster dad’s shoes are not their toys. They are quite content and proud owners of their very own chew toys. Rose and Joe like walks around the neighborhood. They then enjoy a day of learning why dad’s chair is so comfortable, they like to keep it warm and just right for dad’s return. Once mom is home, they’ll curl up for some love and a little evening news. Please call Forsyth Humane Society at 336-721-1303 for more information. n

R2.

Nitro.

Are you looking for a handsome boy to greet you at the door when you come home? If so, look no further! My name is R2 and I’m a Boxer/Labrador mix who loves to take long strolls around the block. I enjoy the outdoors and have worked diligently on my leash manners. I already know to “sit” and “shake paws” and love to show my tricks off, especially when treats are involved! I enjoy spending time with my people and I’ll keep myself entertained while you’re out. I’m housebroken and up-to-date on vaccines, but because of my strength, I’d probably do best in a home without young children. I’d prefer to be the only pet but wouldn’t mind meeting another four-legged friend for play dates if properly introduced.

I’m Nitro, a German Shepherd/ Husky mix who loves life! I’ve had a rough first three years...my previous owners didn’t treat me very well. I came into HSAC with a neck injury due to an embedded collar, but I received amazing medical care and I’ve since healed beautifully! You’d never know I had ever led a less than happy life because I’m always happy! I love to socialize with people, especially kids, and I love other dogs as well! I walk beautifully on leash, listen to commands and am highly motivated by yummy treats! I am incredibly loving and will dole out kisses to anyone willing to take them. I would love to find an active family to take me on long walks, but I would also love a family content to snuggle with me on the couch.

Marshall

Loni

is a 12 pound, 1 year old who looks like a Miniature Pinscher/Chihauhua mix and has the spunky, loving personality of both breeds. She is a confident, friendly little dynamo who will always take the time to settle in for a good snuggle. Since she is so sociable, she will do best in a family that is active and keeps her involved in their daily life. She is learning how to walk on a leash and loves it! She likes doggie friends but is a dominant girl so she needs to be an only dog in her new home. Loni wants ALL the attention! Adoption donation $175. Visit www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org for more info. n

Jenna

is a fun-loving, goofy 10 month old puppy with sparkling white teeth. We are not sure of his age but he is definitely a puppy and still potties like a girl. His adult size should be up to the 30 pound range but we are not sure, of course. He was kept outside chained to a tree before his rescue. He loves to make new people friends and is super friendly and snuggly. He is confident enough to trust quickly. He loves to play with toys and is a delightful puppy. He is smart and likes to please. He will excel with a Terrier-savvy new family. Adoption donation $175.

Jenna has a serene, good-natured, well-rounded manner about her and it seems like she will be a lovely family dog. Jake

Jack.

was found in a garbage can at Walmart in 2008 when he was a baby. He is now 80 pounds and 9 but still acts like a big puppy. He is leash-trained but has been an outside dog. Our children played with him but they are now grown and Jake is lonely. He loves to be petted and played with. He has always been sweet, never aggressive. We need to rehome him since we have to move and cannot take him with us. Adoption fee $50.

Hi I’m Jack. I am two years old and am a sweet boy. My favorite thing is playing fetch in the yard with my toy rings. I also do great on the treadmill. I walk well on leash, however, I get overly excited when I see other critters. I love car rides and know TONS of commands. I am house-trained and crate-trained. I like people and children and just want to snuggle once I calm down. I would be best as an only pet. I am microchipped, neutered and up-to-date on everything. We work long hours and Jack needs a family who has time for this energetic pup!

Moose is a 2 year old male who is current on vaccines, housebroken and on heartworm preventative. His family sadly had to surrender him as they were both deployed overseas. Moose had been with a previous owner prior to them and while his history there is unknown, it is obvious that he was not able to trust humans, as he is slow to trust them now. Moose would benefit from living in a home with Weimaraner experience and a lot of land, Tarheel Weimrescue as he loves to run. Butler

is a sweet Puggle mix, about 2 years old. He loves everyone he meets. Butler is great with other dogs and loves kids too. He is content to go on a nice long walk or curl up beside you on the couch and watch your favorite T.V. show. Overall, this sweet pup is happy-go-lucky and any family will be sure to fall in love with him. Apply today at www.reddogfarm.com to adopt this special guy. n

Bean

Kiesel

needs a friend. Not only is he looking for his forever home but he needs a doggie companion to look up to and pal around with. This boy does great with a routine and a friend to chill with during the day. Kiesel doesn’t particularly care for children so a home without kids is a must. The occasional child passing by is fine but please don’t pet him. Kiesel knows his basic commands and would be a great dog for just about any person or couple. Finally, Kiesel has quite the nose that may or may not get him in trouble in your backyard. He might just train all the squirrels to stay on the other side of the fence. If interested, please complete an adoption application online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Casey

Birch comes from a litter

is a very sweet 6 year old pot belly pig. She came from a loving home that took excellent care of her for her first 6 years. Unfortunately, Casey was surrendered to us after her family had to move. Casey is healthy and at an ideal weight for a pot belly pig. She had been an only pig until she arrived at her foster home and was introduced to two other pigs. Casey now happily shares a giant nest of straw with her new piggy friends. Casey loves a good scratching on her piggy ears and of course on her belly. She is very polite with kids, adults and other farm animals. Her foster mom noticed her snuggling with her new piggy brother which demonstrates Casey’s easygoing personality.

of 5, the “tree litter”! He and his kitten siblings are about 9 weeks old and were found living in a field in the cold and pouring rain. They are new to Red Dog Farm and are learning the ropes of being indoor kitties. He and his siblings are very friendly and socialized, they do well with other cats, dogs, and kids! All the kittens in this litter will be spayed and neutered in the next couple of weeks, then will be available for adoption.

Rodney came back to us after being in a loving home for 4 years, enjoying life with his human and the family cat in Florida. Sadly, his beloved owner died in her sleep, and Rodney was found by her side, protecting her. Loving friends and rescue angels drove him back to DRT from Florida. He will be 9 years old in June and Doberman Rescue of the Triad has dilated cardiomyopathy, but he’s doing fine on his meds. He has some arthritis and the usual lumps and bumps from aging. He’s a terrific boy who still loves to play with the Jolly ball, is dog friendly (he’s so gentle that he plays with our special needs Dober), and longs for a loving home after living in one these past 4 years. Read more about Rodney online at www.doberman-rescue.com. Make an appointment to meet him after your application has been approved. n

Miley is a six year old spayed fawn female. She has a sweet, calm personality and loves to be with her humans. She needs to lose a few pounds, but is energetic for her walks. She will need to be on prescription food (Royal Canin S0) and distilled water for the rest of her life to avoid kidney stones and have follow up care for them. She is otherwise healthy and loving. She is good Pug Rescue of NC with other dogs, cats and children. She needs a bit of work with house-training but is crate-trained.

DAVIDSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER 336.357.0805 / www.co.davidson.nc.us/animalshelter/

Magnolia.

I was saying to myself just this morning, “Magnolia, you know what you need? You need a person all of your own.” So I sat down to write this post for the nice shelter folks because apparently that’s the kind of thing they do - find nice people for extremely intelligent and lovable kitties who are...I shudder to type this... LAPLESS. That’s right: I have no lap to call my own. Could you be persuaded to volunteer yours for me to nap in? If so, I am currently taking interviews for my very own human at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Please apply in person. Please call the Davidson County Animal Shelter at 336-357-0805 for more information. n

Silas

Ferb.

Please allow us to introduce you to Ferb. He is a handsome 2 year old who is dressed up in his best tuxedo. Although he is dressed his best, he is not much of a social butterfly when it comes to other felines. Ferb prefers to be the only cat in the home and is looking for a place where he can just lay back and relax. He loves his people and can be quite the chatterbox when he wants attention. Ferb is already neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped, and negative for FIV/FELV. His adoption fee is only $55 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Please call 336-357-0805 for more information. n

Harley.

would like to submit his application for your personal assistant. Working on the computer? He will step on the keyboard. Reading the paper? He will hold the pages down for you. Watching TV? He’ll just make himself comfortable in your lap so you can massage his majestic black fur. He loves an orderly household. Silas will help you get all of your chores done and then relax with you when you’re all done. You’ll wonder how you ever got along without him. His adoption fee is $50 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter.

Hello! I’m Harley! I love people; especially ones that give me massages, peanut butter, play with me, take me for long walks, and let me snooze in the sun on lazy Sunday afternoons. I love watching action/adventure movies and meeting new people. I would prefer to be the only fur-child in the home. Although I’m positive for heartworms, I have already started treatment. I am neutered, up-to-date on all of my vaccinations, and microchipped. All I need now is a home to call my own!

Please call 336-357-0805 for more information. n

Mary, Mary quite contrary. This 3 year old lady is keen on finding her forever person or family preferably sooner rather than later. She has been waiting ever since early January for that special someone to take her home. Mary enjoys getting outside for long walks or playing and loves going for rides in the car. Her adoption fee is $55 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Mary is a very loyal dog and needs a home without any other pets. Please call 336-357-0805 for more information. n

He will keep you laughing with his silly antics. Little Man is already neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped. His adoption fee is $45 from the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Ronny is a loving little Peke who really enjoys sitting right next to you – or even better – on your lap. He likes other dogs, but prefers sitting with his person. He loves to eat and sticks his nose up in the air whenever he smells food. Due to scarring on his eyes, Ronny can’t see well, but once he learns his way around – Hart-2-Heart Rescue you’d never know it. His eye medication may be able to restore some of his eyesight, over time. He doesn’t mind getting his eye meds at all, but because he does have some Pekingese traits, he would do best in a Peke experienced home with no young children. Ronny is around 8 years of age, weighs 12 pounds and is housebroken. He is neutered, current on shots, heartworm tested, on heartworm prevention and had his teeth cleaned and some extractions. For more information about Ronny and other Hart-2-Heart Rescue adoptable small dogs go to www.hart2heartrescue.petfinder.com or email h2hadoptions@gmail.com. n

Vet’s Corner

Christine E. Hunt, DVM

T

Dr. Christine E. Hunt received her B.S. in Zoology from N.C. State University, cum laude, followed by her veterinary doctorate from Oklahoma State University. She has practiced small animal medicine, dentistry and surgery in Greensboro since 1983. In 2003, she opened University Animal Hospital. Her interests lie in advanced and novel pain management techniques, internal medicine, dermatology and comprehensive dentistry.

Anxiety in Pets

he Fourth of July has come and gone, but summer thunderstorms followed by the onset of hurricane season can still strike fear in the hearts of your pets. Early intervention of fearful behaviors is the key to helping your pet have a welladjusted, happy life.

What are some of the early signs of anxiety in pets? Some pets display very subtle signs like dilated pupils, changes in facial expressions, increased panting, pacing, shivering, or clingy behaviors. Excessive anxiety frequently manifests itself by more dangerous destructive behaviors, escape behaviors, or fear based aggression.

Why does my dog hide in the shower whenever there’s a thunderstorm? This is an example of escape or hiding behavior. Hiding in the bathroom, closet or under the bed helps dampen the sound, barometric pressure changes and visual effects of the thunder and lightning by recreating a cave-like environment. Take this instinctive behavior and redirect it with positive reinforcement during good weather. Use calming beneficial pheromones and lavender to scent your pet’s bed. Give all treats there, and reinforce this safe zone with a lot of petting and social interaction. Start calming supplements such as Composure-pro or Silloquin well before the storms are predicted to start. Make this your pet’s Zen Pen. Find calming music that blocks out the sound of heavy rain and thunder. Use a

44

August 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

swaddling Thunder shirt or tight, heavy tee shirt that can duplicate hugging. Once your pet is consistently relaxed in its Zen Pen, follow through with all of the learned relaxation techniques during storm events. If you have a puppy, start him/her off on the right paw by making storm time synonymous with play and treat time.

my dog is so afraid of thunderstorms that she will break through a window and run away. What can I do? This behavior is extremely dangerous and your pet needs medical intervention with anti-anxiety medications such as benzo diazepam derivatives or Gabapentin. Many patients are responding to a new anti-anxiety medication called Sileo that is applied to the gum line and is quickly absorbed directly into the bloodstream. It is designed specifically for the treatment of noise phobias, but is contraindicated in dogs with heart, lung, liver or kidney disease. The dosing syringe can be a little tricky to use and can cause a drug overdose if it is not used correctly. Careful use and application of Sileo can help your pet ride out the storm fear free.

can my dog stay on medication all the time? he is afraid of every loud noise, even the TV. Some dogs do need medication all of the time, but it works better in combination with a pheromone collar, a Thunder shirt and basic training. Diets containing calming supplements can also reduce the need for constant anti-anxiety medication. Obedience training helps dogs learn self-confidence because they then know what is expected of them. The training can be used to help them desensitize to fearful triggers. Positive reinforcement with treats or toys should always be part of your pet’s therapy. In some cases of extreme global or pan phobias, a board certified veterinary behavior consultant may be required to help these extremely fearful pets.
