s we celebrate our two year anniversary, and reflect back on the last two years, one thing is for certain, the world of animal rescue is an amazing place. You will find the most dedicated, compassionate people, all tirelessly working to save lives and improve the lives of animals throughout our area. You will find these people everywhere. In shelters, they are behind the desks, but you will also find them walking the dogs and caressing the cats, socializing the animals, giving the animals a much needed break from their cages. Many of these people are volunteers who work full-time jobs elsewhere, but spend much of their spare time helping the animals. You will find them at adoption fairs week after week, working hard to find permanent homes for the animals. You’re likely to find them in your own neighborhood, fostering animals for shelters and rescue organizations, giving the animals a chance at life. Some work behind the scenes and you will never see what they do, they volunteer their time cleaning
cages, grooming animals, working in spay/neuter clinics, feeding feral cats, driving animals to their new homes in distant places, and the list can go on and on. It’s a world many people do not even know exists. We are truly amazed at the dedication of these people and would like to thank all of you for all you do for the animals. Forsyth County Animal Control is our shelter in the spotlight this month. You can read about their special programs and services and how they benefit the animals in the community on pages 8 and 9. Dr. Julie Dudak of the Cat Clinic of Greensboro writes on Chronic Kidney Disease in our Ask the Vet column on page 13. She answers the most common concerns and questions people ask, or should be asking, about kidney disease and their pets. Dog owners will want to read this month’s training column on page 42 by Adam Witherspoon of Shiloh K-9 Dog Training Services. Adam discusses the importance of providing consistent leadership to our dogs. A long-time supporter of Triad Happy Tails, Eanes Heating and Air Conditioning, just opened an additional location in Greensboro, to better serve residents of the area with all of their heating and air conditioning needs. You’ll also find filters, thermostats, and a host of other items, plus a knowledgeable staff to assist you. Please support them at their new location, as they have supported Triad Happy Tails from day one. Last, but certainly not least, we would like to thank each and every advertiser. Their ads allow us to offer free space to approximately 30 different shelters and animal rescue organizations each month, helping the animals find their way into permanent homes. Please note who these businesses are below and support them whenever possible. Have a safe and wonderful August!

Baby Betsy Will Return to Work Soon Baby Betsy is a six year old Papillon who was diagnosed last year with a serious condition known as immune mediated poly arthritis.
Her body’s own immune system was slowly destroying her joints, especially her carpal (wrist) joints, causing them to swell and to be extremely painful. Baby Betsy had to take large quantities of corticosteroids to control her symptoms; however, the medicine that controlled her disease was also making her ill. In fact, she was too sick to continue her most important job as Ambassador and reading assistant with many children at Northwood Elementary School in High Point. Children earn play time with Baby Betsy as a reward. Upset children will often ask to hold her,
letting her lick their tears away and replace each frown with a smile. The loss of her “job” made Baby Betsy mentally depressed as well. Recently, Baby Betsy received her first adipose derived stem cell treatment. She is no longer on steroids and for the first time, her appetite is normal. She is walking around rather than being carried, her depression is gone and her pain is diminishing rapidly. The children have sent her hundreds of get well cards. By summer’s end, she will return to her teacher’s assistance job and joyful reunion with the children she so dearly loves.

Forsyth County Animal Control’s Special Programs Highlighting Special Services to the Local Community Roxy

orsyth County Animal Control (FCAC) is feeling the heat this summer. The volume of calls for aggressive animals, dog bites and inadequate shelter make the summer some of the busiest months of the year. The department will handle over 15,000 investigations this year. Ten Animal Control Officers respond to these reports seven days per week, 24 hours a day. Seven Shelter Attendants will care for the 8,500 animals that enter the shelter each year. The Administrative division will process over 50,000 pet license and rabies transactions.
F
Since the inception of the differential licensing program in 2004, the percentage of registered pets that are altered, has increased to 99% for cats and 89% for dogs.
The department’s Special Programs are programs not always associated with an animal control agency, but are fundamental to Animal Control’s service provision to the community. The AniMeals and Houses for Hounds program assist low-income households by providing food and shelter for pets at no cost to the owner. Safe Haven provides transportation and temporary shelter, for animals whose owners seek shelter at Family Services Women’s Shelter. Feline Assistance Initiatives Response (F.A.I.R) 8
is a partnership program with Forgotten Felines of Forsyth, a non-profit organization committed to humanely reducing the feral and stray cat population in Forsyth County. The two organizations work together to address stray and feral cat issues within the community. One of FCAC’s newest partnerships were formed last October when the non-profit, Project Pearl joined their Community Care Program. Looking for a way to help their county shelter, Melissa Ball and Fowler Ruffin started Project Pearl with the hope that better photos would lead to higher adoptions. And it’s worked. In less than a year, adoption rates at FCAC have increased over 30%. The recently completed fiscal year for 2012 had a record high for adoptions for Forsyth County. Although Project Pearl’s primary focus was photography, they also revitalized FCAC’s foster program. This important program allows animals that may be restricted from entering the adoption program due to medical conditions, to be treated, fostered and adopted out. From cats & kittens, dogs & puppies to pigs, Project Pearl has fostered over 30 animals and has had a 100% success rate. “Once in foster care, our organization pays for the animal to be altered, reducing the adoption fee. It’s a great incentive and for approved candidates,
August 2012 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
the animal can go home the same day.”, says Melissa Ball, Cofounder. Recently, Roxy, an adorable 6-monthold mix breed had to have a forelimb amputation in order to stay in the adoption program. Project Pearl successfully raised the funds to get this surgery done and is grateful to Animal Ark in Clemmons for their assistance. Currently recovering in her foster home, Roxy will be available for adoption in the near future. Time and space always proves to be a challenge for any open admission shelter, so fostering animals is another way to extend the shelter into the community. Two other programs that have greatly benefited the shelter animals and residents of Forsyth County are Hiking Hounds and the Stay Together Program (S.T.P). Ready to hit the trail? Founded by Karen Wilson, Hiking Hounds pairs volunteers with canine hiking companions. Groups meet at the shelter once a month, grab their pooch and hit the trails! This form of exercise is fun for both volunteers and dogs and provides the shelter with valuable information for potential adopters. Rides well in the car? Loves the water? Great on the leash? Enjoys the company of other dogs? Knows basic commands? All this and more is discovered through Hiking Hounds! The Stay Together Program (S.T.P) helps dog owners
and their new pet learn to adjust to each other, making for a successful, life-long partnership and it’s included in the adoption fee! Melissa Legere, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer- Knowledge Assessed (CPDTKA), helps recent dog adopters train their dog to become a well-behaved, active member of their family and community. According to Melissa, the Top Three Reasons to Train Your Dog: (1) The more acceptable behaviors a dog learns, the less room there is for “bad” behaviors. (2) Training increases the odds that your dog will stay with you for his lifetime rather than be given up due to behavior issues. (3) Training is fun!
Through its Community Care and Almost Home programs, FCAC unites animals with non-profit animal rescue organizations and animal care professionals. The transfer of shelter animals before their placement in permanent homes has been a great success. Since 2004, an average of 250 animals per year have benefited from these programs. The department works with the Forsyth County Animal Control Advisory Board to develop recommendations on animal control codes, policies and programs. Advisory Board members are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners pursuant to identified interest categories. The Advisory

Board conducts regular public meetings and prepares an annual report for the Board of County Commissioners. After receiving her Master’s degree, she worked as a guest lecturer at Eastern Michigan University while continuing to work as a veterinary assistant. She earned her veterinary degree from Colorado State University. Following graduation, she pursued advanced training by completing an internship at Carolina Veterinary Specialists in Greensboro. Since then, she has been in private practice as a small animal clinician. Dr. Dudak has a special interest in geriatric and preventative medicine, as well as a strong focus on the management of acute and chronic pain. She also enjoys soft tissue surgery. In her free time, Dr. Dudak enjoys running, cycling and being outdoors. She shares her home with her boyfriend (who is a veterinarian in Greensboro), her two goofy Great Danes (Frank and Cairo) and three wonderful cats (Myra Jean, Kylie and Koko).
Chronic Kidney Disease Chronic kidney disease (CKD) or chronic renal failure (CRF) is one of the most common diseases affecting middle to older age pets, particularly cats. The causes of CKD vary, but some of the more common causes include degeneration (i.e., aging changes), infection, inflammation, toxins and trauma. Below are some of the most common concerns and questions people ask, or should be asking, about kidney disease and their pets: What are some of the signs that I may notice in my pet? The most common signs people notice are increased thirst and urination (they seem to be “filling the water bowl more frequently, scooping the box more often, etc.”), lethargy, sleeping more, decreased appetite or increased pickiness (e.g., “he/ she will lick the gravy off their food” or “they’ll eat their treats but not their food”), vomiting, bad breath and weight loss. How is renal or kidney disease diagnosed? Renal and kidney disease may be diagnosed by evaluation of blood and urine. Unfortunately, by the time most people notice something is wrong with their pet, there has already been a great degree of damage done to the kidneys. The first thing that is detectable is an inability to concentrate urine. This does not occur until 2/3 of kidney function is gone. Blood values do not change until there is 3/4 loss of function. This is one of the many reasons your veterinarian likely recommends yearly, and even twice yearly, evaluation of your pet’s blood AND urine. What are some of the changes that occur with CKD? Loss of kidney function can lead to a variety of changes within the body. These include, but are not limited to, acid/base imbalance, potassium depletion (which leads to muscle weakness and lethargy), high phosphorous, anemia, increased gastric acid production (which helps contribute to nausea and vomiting) and high blood pressure. Is there anything that can be done to treat or cure my pet if they develop kidney disease? Unlike the liver, once damaged, the kidneys will never regain full function. However, there are a multitude of treatments and modifications that can be made to slow the progression of the disease. Many patients with CKD can live full and happy lives. Treatment will vary depending on the stage of disease. The first step for all patients with CKD is a change in diet. Renal, or kidney, specific diets have a modified amount of protein, thus putting less “strain” on the kidneys, higher amounts of potassium and
less phosphorous to counteract the effects that occur with impaired kidney function. When diet alone is not enough to control electrolyte abnormalities, patients will be placed on potassium supplements and medications to bind excess phosphorous (these are generally well accepted when mixed in wet food). Antacids, such as Pepcid, anti-nausea medications, appetite stimulants, essential fatty acids, blood pressure medications and fluids given under the skin at home are also useful tools in treating patients with progressing kidney disease. Patients in end-stage kidney disease, or kidney failure, are often anemic. This anemia is the result of the kidney’s inability to produce the hormone erythropoietin. This hormone stimulates the release of red blood cells from the bone marrow. There is a synthetic hormone available that may be used to help stimulate the bone marrow for some of the more advanced cases of kidney disease. How often should my CKD pet be seen by my veterinarian? This often depends on how well your pet is responding to the recommended therapies. For a stable CKD pet, it is recommended they be seen by their veterinarian every 3-6 months. It is not only important to monitor blood values, but also blood pressure and urine. Pets with CKD are more prone to developing urinary tract infections. Unfortunately, since their urine is often very dilute, periodic urine cultures may be necessary to fully rule out an infection. While it is disappointing and frightening to find out your beloved pet has kidney disease, it is important to remember that early detection is the first step at slowing the progression of this disease. Many seemingly healthy and happy pets may be suffering from kidney disease, but without routine blood and urine analysis, owners and veterinarians have no idea which pets are being affected. Remember, by the time a patient is exhibiting signs of kidney disease, they have already lost at least 2/3 of their kidney function. Kidney disease is often a very manageable disease, but only if you and your veterinarian know it exists in your pet. Be proactive, have your pet’s blood and urine tested regularly.

Andee.
Hi, I’m Andee. My siblings and I were orphaned at 2 weeks old, but a nice AARF volunteer bottle-raised us. I was the runt of the litter until I hit my growth spurt a few weeks ago, and now I’m the biggest and the cuddliest! My siblings, Elise and Wyatt, think they’re lap cats, but I show them what a lap cat really is! I love to climb into a warm lap, give kisses, and purr like a diesel engine! I get along very well with other cats and I think I’d get along with dogs and kids pretty well too. I’m up-to-date on all my shots and hope you will come to the AARF adoption fairs to meet me, and I’ll make you fall in love with me, I’m really that cute. Call AARF at 768-7387 if you are interested in adopting Andee. n
Booker
is quite the dapper gentleman in his tuxedo, goatee, tiny white moustache, and white boots. Hand-raised and bottle-fed since 3 weeks of age, he was found with his siblings but without mom inside a boat that was moved. Booker is a lap-cat lover who loves to give light kisses and purrs at a mere look! Inside-only. Booker will be your best laid-back loyal buddy for life. Call AARF at 768-7387 if you are interested in adopting Booker. n
Rascal
Milo
and his sister, Katie, were taken from an abusive situation by Animal Control. These sweet 1 year old lap cats are now in foster care with AARF. Milo and Katie are thriving in their foster home which they also share with dogs. Call AARF at 768-7387 if you are interested in adopting Milo. n
Bones is our sweet little 2 year old Australian Terrier mix. While a little shy at first, she will be your best friend once she warms up. She is spayed, crate trained, leash trained, house broken and loves to be near her people. She adores curling up on the sofa and watching TV with her people. If you can give Bones the loving home she deserves, please come to the AARF Adoption Fair at 311 Harvey St. in Winston Salem from noon to 4 on Saturday. Bones is fully vetted and can only be adopted within a one hour radius of Winston Salem. She can not be adopted to a home with small children. Call AARF at 768-7387 if you are interested in adopting Bones. n
Dexter. I was rescued
is a spunky 7 year old Chihuahua/Dachshund mix, brindle in color and weighs approximately 10 lbs. He does well with other dogs, and loves to cuddle with his foster mom and dad. He is crate trained, and housebroken. Rascal is shy at first but warms up quickly. He likes to talk to his people with cute grunts and growls. Because of Rascal’s small size and personality, we will not adopt him to a home with small children. Please come to our Saturday adoption fair from noon to 4 at 311 Harvey St. in Winston Salem to learn more. Rascal is fully vetted and can only be adopted within a one hour radius of Winston Salem.
from a park by a nice kid. I was so alone and scared until he and his mom brought me to AARF. I’m a little shy when you first pick me up, but then I melt into your arms and purr like a diesel engine! I’m very sweet and wellbehaved. I can’t wait for a furever home, especially with a family who will snuggle with me and give me lots of treats. You can meet me at the AARF adoption fairs on Saturdays from 12-4.

Are We Loving Our Dogs and Cats into an Early Grave?
By Shirley Main
I
n my profession as a dog and cat groomer, I see so many pets that are being loved to death by parents that can’t say no. Obesity in pets, as in people, shortens lives and creates many health problems, such as hip and knee issues requiring surgery or causing early onset arthritis in overworked joints. Just as in people, overweight pets are at risk for heart disease and diabetes. There are a few easy things we can do to protect our pets. Switch to a weight management food and feed per the recommendations on the package. Use a smaller food bowl. You won’t be tempted to add more food because the bowl looks too empty. Cut out all food from your dinner table. If you never feed from your plate, eventually the begging will stop. Animals that maintain a healthy weight Don’t free feed. Twice a day separate pets to feed. live a longer, more trouble free life.
This prevents one pet from eating another’s food, as well as his/her own. Set a time limit and remove the food at the end of that time. Twice a day my five dogs happily enter their crates to eat. After about 30 minutes, the food is picked up and they all go outside to eliminate, (killing two birds with one stone). If you feel the need to reward good behavior between meals, try a piece of a carrot or green bean. Dogs love raw vegetables and they have virtually no calories. If you must reward with prepackaged prepared treats, check the calories. A belly rub and a kind word are great rewards as well. Above all, exercise, exercise, and more exercise. That’s good for all of us. Try one or all of these techniques and love your dogs and cats for a long and healthy life. Shirley has owned Petstravaganza Inc., located at 210 North Cherry Street, Kernersville, NC, for seven years. She graduated from Rochester Institute of Dog Grooming and worked as an instructor before moving to North Carolina.

Bella. At 8 weeks old, Bella
Scout. It’s hard
hurt her leg very badly, but that did not stop her. She loves life: both people & other dogs. She quietly rides in the back seat of the car and sleeps in her crate at night. When Bella was 6 months old she had her front leg surgically removed and the vet reported that she was incredible! Within a few hours of her surgery she was wagging her tail and ready for quiet play. She returned to her foster parents and was immediately able to climb stairs, chase birds and play with her foster sister. Her tail never stopped wagging and her eyes say, “lets have fun.” She’s looking for an active family where she can have plenty of play time.
to believe that this little boy’s mom is a full blooded Beagle but she is! All four babies look just like this but mama is a Beagle. Wonder who dad is? So, we will call Scout a Beagle mix. He certainly does have that great demeanor that Beagles have. Scout was born on May 15, 2012. He’s a good little boy and has adapted well to being a house puppy and sleeping in a crate. His personality is forming and it’s been so much fun watching him turn into a playful bundle of fur. Would you like to meet our Scout? Just give us a call or shoot us an e-mail!

Ernest. This beau-
Andy. Meet Rag-
tiful dark tabby and white boy is Ernest, named after Ernest Hemingway. Ernest is one of those kittens whose purr box automatically turns on when you pick him up. He is sure to be a lap cat. Born on March 21, 2012, Ernest came from a littler of 4 kittens. He will fit into any home that has love to offer. Very much a kitten yet a people cat, Ernest loves to eat * play * sleep. That is his daily routine so if you are able to stick to that then you might be a good match for Ernest!
gedy Andy! Brother to Annie. Born in early April. Fluffy, cute, and playful, that’s our Andy! Andy (and his sister Annie) came to ARFP when he was rescued from a bad situation. Now he is one lucky kitty. Andy loves to play and lives in a home with dogs. He loves people and hopes to have a lap to call his own very soon. Please come and visit Andy soon!

Hemingway.
Bowie.
Named after Ernest Hemingway, our Hemingway is a Polydactyl cat. Upon Hemingway’s death in 1961, his former home in Key West, FL, became a museum and a home for his cats. Because of his love for these animals, “Hemingway Kitty Cat”, or simply “Hemingway Cat”, is a term which has come to describe polydactyls. His front paws look like little mittens. His personality is about as sweet and purrfect as it could be. Hemingway was born on March 21, 2012, and is fully vetted. We love our Hemingway and you will too!
If one word were used to describe Bowie, it would be adorable. This sweet boy, born 5/1/12, is the smallest of his litter but was the first to begin fearlessly exploring his new foster home. Bowie loves to play with his brothers, Jagger and Frehley, and has a great time with kitty toys; however, he always finds time to come up to snuggle in a lap or get a quick belly rub before going on to his next adventure. This fun-loving little guy would make a great addition to any family. Bowie would love for you to come by and see him next time he is at the adoption center. He knows it will be love at first sight when you meet him.

is a smart three month old tortoise, who came to the shelter as a stray. She’s a little shy at first, but warms up quickly. Pearl likes to play and chase small balls, she also likes to hide in dark spaces. She can be a snob, wanting to be held when it suits her, but aren’t most cats? She has amazing intense green eyes that make her especially precious, like her name. Pearl needs a great home.

and Cleopatra are one of the most famous pairs in history, made even more renowned by the Shakespearean play of that name. Our Tony and Cleo are every bit as dramatic. Cleo, a sweet and tiny calico, promises to be the queen of her domain, with her brother Tony, a baby Maine Coon mix, forever at her beck and call. If you are looking for an absolutely adorable duo, then look no further--you have found them!
sweet silver tabby kitty boy who is playful, loving, and gets along with everybody. He came from a litter with two Siamese sisters, Lola and Lolita. He has the slender Siamese body but not the meow. Leroy loves his sisters, but would be happy in a home without them as long as he had a playmate. Why not adopt Leroy and his sister(s), or take him home to be a buddy for your current kitty?

Lexus loves
Ember
attention, and will happily trot over if you call her for neck scratches. She has a dainty little voice making little chirps instead of a meow. Quite the charmer, she will return your kiss by giving you a little kitty kiss on the nose! Her dainty white feet, big bushy tail and striking lynx markings complete her package. Lexus is a gorgeous, petite little lady who deserves to live in the lap of luxury. Perhaps that lap could be yours?
is a young and playful Flame Point Siamese with large blue eyes that open wide when you wave a feather dancer at him. His body is round like a cherub; so different from his streamlined foster brother Flicker (also a Flame Point). He plays nicely with everyone and loves to cuddle with his foster mom. But, what Ember really wants is a forever family to call his own. Are you that family?

Little Bo Peep wishes she had found our little balls of fuzz! RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com
Tinkerbell and her siblings were found abandoned on the side of the road. Thanks to a Good Samaritan they made it to a local vet’s office and eventually to Red Dog Farm. When they originally came to us, they were just three weeks old and still needed to be bottle fed. They also came down with a horrible case of coccidia within two days of coming to us and were treated for it. Today, they have fully recovered from the bout of coccidia and are starting to eat canned kitten food. All three kittens are enjoying life and playing as any three siblings should. They are litter box trained and will make excellent pets for any home. They are just now developing their own individual personalities. If you are interested in adopting Tinkerbell please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n
Xena came to Red Dog Farm when her owner passed away from cancer. Xena is a fantastic girl who is very sweet and EXTREMELY well-behaved. She loves to go for walk s and is very polite on the leash. When she isn’t walking or enjoying the great outdoors with you, she is happy to crawl into your lap for a snuggle fest if invited of course. She is up to date on all of her vaccines, spayed, and microchipped. She is 100% house broken and would make the perfect addition to any family. Xena would LOVE to find a family to call her own and to live out the rest of her life with because she thinks life can’t get any better than being with someone you love. Due to her age, Xena’s adoption fee is being waived for the perfect family. If you are interested in Xena please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n
Angel
was surrendered to us by an owner who would otherwise have been charged by animal control with neglect. She came to us very skinny and received a full veterinary exam upon arrival. Angel suffered a broken pelvis at some point in life and therefore may not ever be ridden or bred. She is comfortable in her daily life but her pelvis is not strong enough to support a rider or a pregnancy. Angel is amazes us as she gallops around her new field and bucks in delight. We never thought that would be possible with her old pelvis injury. She absolutely LOVES humans, especially anyone who will scratch her or brush her mane. She will make such a wonderful pet for someone willing to give her lots of attention. She is a big fan of children petting her too! Please visit www.reddogfarm.com to adopt Angel. n

Project Pearl Or a Picture is Worth a Thousand Words (Lives)! By Melissa Ball
T
he story of how Project Pearl began is quite simple: Melissa Ball & Fowler Ruffin joined together after helping Pearl, an older dog that had been at Forsyth County Animal Shelter for two months, find a home. Standing in the county’s parking lot, they pitched ideas to each other on different ways to help Forsyth County Animal Control (FCAC). Then the sentence that changed everything was uttered, “What about helping the staff take photos?” Two days later, on October 1, 2011, Project Pearl was formed and the effort was called “Lend a Lens”. As an open admission shelter, FCAC is committed to the safety of Forsyth County residents (two and four legged) and is required to accept any animal that comes through their door. This includes giving shelter to every stray, owner surrender, as well as the abandoned and cruelty cases in our county. The entire staff at FCAC works incredibly hard in a never-ending and highly emotional environment. Project Pearl is honored to collaborate and assist them. Although many people view Project Pearl solely as an organization “that takes photos”; we also assist FCAC with transfers, volunteer efforts, organized functions, fostering animals and community outreach. Our first foster success story was of “Lil’ Debbie”. Originally thought to be a 4-month-old
“Lil”Debbie only weighed 11 lbs. at intake. Photo by Virginia Weiler

puppy, Debbie, was estimated to be around 1 1⁄2 years of age, weighed only 11 pounds at intake. Debbie was emaciated and had the worst case of parasites the vet had seen in 25 years. After 4 months of specialized medical care, she tripled her weight and looks like a completely different dog. Recently adopted and renamed “Cookie”, she is living the good life in the mountains of Western NC. Funds generated from our first online fundraiser, allowed us to purchase 22 Freedom No-Pull harnesses that are used for FCAC’s wonderful Hiking Hounds program and with S.P.O.T, in-house dog training run by volunteers. Adopters are able to see the animal’s amazing potential in the short amount of time they are handled by volunteers. The community support Project Pearl has received has been awe-inspiring! We’re adding professional photographers to our team every week. Currently we are honored to have the following professionals involved: Ginny Weiler, Ellen Henson, Nunthany Johnson, Ginger Nixon, Amanda Sullivan, Christine Rucker, Todd McLean, Lauren

Another division of Project Pearl could be called “Share the Shearers!”. Dozens of dogs and cats would not be made available for adoption if it weren’t for the generosity of our groomers! Linda Miller of Linda’s Pet Haven and Stephanie Ratcliff of Bubbles & Bows have been instrumental. Matted, filthy animals are coifed and groomed by professional groomers that donate their time. The transformations are amazing and the animals they have groomed have had a 100% adoption rate. Our volunteers are remarkable, too! From bathing to transporting, we have a group of unsurpassed individuals. We’re currently recruiting folks 16 and older. Time spent with Project Pearl is guaranteed to reaffirm the belief that many like-minded people CAN make a huge difference in the lives of many animals. “Sharing love for people, animals and our community” is our motto and mission. The adoption rate at FCAC has steadily increased over 30% and 2012 has been the highest adoption year in the history of FCAC. Project Pearl plans on continuing our non-profit for as long as our community will support us! If you are an enthusiastic, positive spirited person who loves making a difference for the animals in Forsyth County and would like to volunteer with Project Pearl, or are a professional photographer wanting to join our devoted team, please contact us at: projectpearl@triad.rr.com or visit us on Facebook! We are currently funded by monetary donations and they are graciously appreciated!
SPECIFIC BREED & VARIOUS LOCAL RESCUE GROUPS Contact information is listed with each featured animal. Maggie S. I’m here to tell you I hate allergies. I had a wonderful, loving home, but my dad developed allergies. They tried everything to keep me, but nothing worked. So here I am with my 8th birthday next month, in need of a new family to love me as much as my last one did. If you’re looking for a Carolina Basset Hound gentle, loving, and well behaved basRescue set lady, that’s me! I’m housetrained, crate-trained, walk nicely on leash, and every dog and person I meet is a friend. I’m even good with the littlest of two-leggers - you know, the ones they call babies. I have a very sensitive stomach, but as long as I get my standard dry dog food every day, I’m good to go. For information on any of our available Basset Hounds, please contact rgering@triad.rr.com, or log onto www.cbhr.com. n
Harper is a 2 year old female Boxer. She’s spayed, as well as crate and house trained, and ready for her new family. Harper is very athletic, so she would love being a member of an active Four Seasons Boxer Rescue family. She also prefers a home with a 6 ft. fence, as she excels in jumping “hurdles”. Harper’s adoption fee is $250. If you are interested in Harper and would like to submit your adoption application, or if you’d like more information, please visit our website, www.FourSeasonsBoxerRescue.com. n
Riley came to us recently from a home that had rescued him as a pup from a bad situation and ended up keeping him for a while before finding DRT. Riley was socialized, house trained, and well cared for. Thankfully he now has come to Elijah’s House on his way Doberman Rescue of the Triad to a permanent home that will be able to meet his needs and provide him with the love and care that he deserves. This 15 month old boy has a wonderfully thick coat, is smaller in size and is wonderfully loving. He loves to play, and you can see from his picture how healthy and happy he is. Riley came to us with a lovely Dobergirl with whom he had been raised since they were pups. She has been adopted and it is his turn now. Visit www.doberman-rescue.com for contact information. n
Sparkle is 11 years old and loves to give kisses and get treats. She is very smart- she knows how to “sit” and “come” and recognizes words such as “go outside”. Sparkle is leash trained but is an older gal and doesn’t do well in a crate because of her need to be let outside often. Sparkle will do best with someone who is home most of the day. She loves a lot of attention, so if you have room for a little more “SPARKLE” in Boston Terrier Rescue of NC your life, please consider this older gal! Her age hasn’t slowed her down a bit and she deserves a family willing to give her the amount of love that she craves! Call BTRNC at339-4368 if you are interested in adopting Sparkle. Her adoption fee is $150 and sheis eligible for our SENIOR to SENIOR program. n
Jada. I’m a wonderful, beautiful young lady who is learning to find love, comfort and trust in the kindness of new friends. I need someone who will be calm and kind while I am getting to know them. I am very well trained with my crate and house training manners. I sit and stay when I am asked and I enjoy shaking hand and paw and giving high fives. I love playing outside in the yard with my Carolina Care Bullies toys every day, and afterwards, I love to have some down time to relax with my friends. I am looking for a family who is calm, confident and kind, a family that will show me that I am loved and safe. For more information contact Amanda at info@carebullies.org.

Honey is one loved six year old Springer whose family has downsized to apartment living and she’s not happy being cooped up. Don’t misunderstand, she’s an inside family-oriented little girl, but she really misses her outside ball-playing time in a safe fenced-in yard! She’s up-to-date on her vet English Springer Spaniel needs, spayed, housetrained, crate trained, loves car rides, is good with dogs, cats and kids! German Shepherd Rescue & Adoptions
Candy-O. Meet Candy-O, she was pulled from a local shelter where she sat scared and very alone, waiting to be put down. Candy-O is around one year old and is on the small side. She is crate trained, house trained, rides well in the car, is good on leash and good with dogs, cats and considerate kids. Very loving, CandyO is always ready with kisses for everyone. This girl is smart, eager to please and even though she is a mix, she has the heart of a pure German Shepherd.

Piper is a 9 year old female, 75 lbs., with a medium gold coat. She had a summer shave and is growing her coat out in this picture. She loves people including children. Does OK with cats, but is an alpha who doesn’t like all dogs - good with some, but not with others. She does well on a leash and is a happy girl. She is housebroken and Triad Golden Retriever Rescue knows sit and stay. Piper would do best in a home where she can get a lot of love and attention. Please visit www.tgrr.org for more information. n
Jonah. My name is Jonah and I’m about 2.5 yrs old! I am so lucky to be in my foster home, I have lots of new friends here. I love to retrieve my tennis balls on land or in the water. We have “classes” everyday and I am now house, crate and leash trained. There is a large Lab Rescue of NC fenced yard here so all of us can run and play. We get treats for learning new things and the meals are great. Quiet time in the house is nice too with lots of comfy beds to choose from. I am really working hard to learn everything I need to help me find my new permanent home. I like meeting new people, kids and other dogs and look forward to loving my new family! Mac's Deliah. My name is Mac’s Deliah, but my friends call me Deliah. I am a 3 year-old girl who likes to play with toys. People tell me I’m gentle and well-behaved. Her owner never showed up to claim her and it is a shame, as she is a wonderful, happy-goFinding Great Homes lucky JRT. Shelly was adopted for Jack Russell Terriers by a loving family and they recently returned her to the rescue because they were no longer able to keep her. Shelly has been spayed, microchipped and is up-to-date on all shots. She is very friendly and enjoys children, other dogs and playing in the big back yard. Shelly is crate trained and leash trained. Teague.
(NCSR # 366) is a 4 year old salt and pepper Schnauzer boy, about 18 lbs., with natural ears and a cute natural tail which he wags wildly for attention! Teague was treated for heartworms, and but is now healthy and heartworm free! He’s a loving boy looking for a family he can trust. He probably won’t be a dog that will sit in your lap for hours, but he will always be happy to see you. Teague is NC Schnauzer Rescue crate trained, and feels comfortable sleeping in his crate throughout the day. He’s ideal for a house where he can grow to trust his owners and there are no young children. Abigail is a gorgeous Siamese/Manx mix born late July 2009. Homeless due to divorce, she joined us at TCR to find a new home. She has stunning blue eyes, seal points, and is a rumpy with just a cowlick of hair where a tail would normally be. Abigail is small, Tailless Cat Rescue about 6 lbs., and very quiet despite her Siamese heritage. She likes to play and LOVES to snuggle in laps. She seems to like all people, but she would like to be the only cat in her new home. She is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped, and is FeLV/FIV and heartworm negative. There’s no stopping this constantly happy 3-legged pup! Roxy LOVES playing with other Photography courtesy of Whiskertales Pet Portraits dogs, children, people and cats. ittens are supposed to be pudgy, fluffy and purring balls of fur. Jasper (Jazz) was not one of those. I have seldom seen a sorrier specimen of small cat than the scruffy morsel I found in my parking lot one morning five years ago. He had scant patches of coarse black and white fur and was covered with mites and fleas. The distended belly was from parasites and not from a tummy full of milk or food. He was barely strong enough to cry for my attention. There was no sign of his mother or any siblings. My vet was not sure that he would live even with the best of care. But Jazz was a fighter with the will to live.

Over the next weeks and months, I nursed him back to health. To everyone’s surprise, he grew a lush coat of super soft fur in an attractive tuxedo pattern. I rescued him with every intention of only fostering. But I don’t think anyone was surprised to hear that this kitty found his way into my heart and became part of the family. He spent his days with me at work and came home with me and my family in the evenings. He loves to be in things - boxes, bags, any unoccupied chair, couch or his snuggly, furry kitty bed trimmed with feathers. When he was little, he had his own special bag that I could carry him in. It was black and white (it was important to his high sense of fashion that the bag coordinate with his fur). Mostly, he liked to crouch down in the bag and look out the side window, but sometimes he would poke his head up to examine whoever I was talking to at the time. I suspect that he enjoyed surprising people. Perhaps the most unusual part of Jasper’s story is that his early life was spent largely at a medical office where I am the physician. Some cats are standoffish. Not so with Jazz. He is always happiest when he is in the middle of any action or being held and pet-

ted. However, he quickly learned to remain in the staff only areas and staff bathroom unless he was invited to interact with a patient. I discovered that he particularly likes to “assist” me with fearful patients (or cat lovers) and that he has a knack for telling who would (and who would not) appreciate his comforting presence. He will happily sit on a patient’s lap and purr while being petted as a procedure is being done and hop off to take (another!) nap when his job was done. I believe he is pretty smug (aren’t all cats smug?) about his job as a therapeutic aid! He is now a handsome, if slightly overweight, adult cat. He lost his hearing during an anesthetic procedure to clean his teeth, but this hasn’t slowed him down in the least. Many days he is too lazy to come to work (he loves to sleep late and sleep often). But to this day, he loves to ride in the car and will perch on the hood or roof when he feels the need to go on an outing or wants to come to the office with me!

Training Your Pet
You Know Better Than That! By Adam Witherspoon
S
ummertime is here. Hot North Carolina afternoons, fireflies, (I always called them lightning bugs), an occasional cool breeze at times, vacations, bliss… On a hot summer afternoon last week I was privileged to take a client’s dog to the vet for a dry run. This particular German Shepherd has had some, well let’s just say “less than friendly” experiences, on his vet trips. The dog was less than friendly that is, not the vet. The vet was great. The dog, on the other hand, was looking for every opportunity to permanently relieve the vet of his or her duties. On this trip, however, what a nice surprise, he did very well. While I was sitting in the waiting room with the dog, another owner brought a very unruly dog in, and then “it” happened. The dog jumped up into a chair in the waiting room, and the owner gave the proverbial, “Fido! You know better than that!” Nothing can wreck a nice summer day for me more than to hear someone say that to their dog. Now many people have often said to me, “What’s the harm?” After all they don’t know what it means anyway, right? Very true, but very harmful. I often give demonstrations while doing a consultation and I will look at the client’s dog and say, “Pizza”, and the dog sits. The dog has no clue as to what I am saying but the leadership is telling the dog to sit.
The harm in “You know better than that!” is in the leadership. It was the owner who allowed the dog to jump on the chair. Obviously, other dogs had been in that chair before, (I had let the GSD in the chair just minutes before) so the dog smelled the chair and thought, “Hey, this is interesting,” and jumped up for 42
a further investigation. The owner did NOTHING to stop it. From the time the owner walked in the door, she let the dog run around all over the place, talking to it incessantly. Then in a state of excitement she created, the dog jumped into the chair, and the owner’s leadership which was nonexistent to begin with turned to dreadful disappointment, frustration, even anger. The dog, I am sure, was completely baffled. He tucked his tail, ears pinned back, and you could read it in his face, “Uh oh, here it comes, what is it that I keep doing to get this?”
say whaat?
The points here are… People often times truly believe their dog knows better. Even my own personal dog Robbie, an outstanding young Belgian Malinois, who wows people at every turn, and is very highly trained, will make a mistake if I allow him via poor leadership. Now, it may seem I am coming down hard on this particular owner, and I probably am, but here it is in a nutshell. Don’t blame the dog for what we do as owners. Don’t expect the dog to know something on its own. They must be taught. We have the responsibility as owners to provide consistent leadership, through a loving and caring atmosphere of discipline. This is the ONLY way, plain and simple, cut and dry, that Fido will truly know better. Get involved in a good obedience class or program with your dog. I’m not talking about a food bribe class that works when there is a treat (although something is better than nothing), but a good and meaningful way to communicate with your dog. Don’t put it off, don’t think, “My dog doesn’t need it.” Any dog would certainly appreciate the improvement in their relationship with their owners. Remember, a dog will only do what it is

allowed to do, nothing more, and nothing less. Be an awesome leader for your dog, enjoy your dog, cherish them, and provide for their needs. They will thank you in so many ways, and for a long time to come.
