J

unior was recently surrendered to the

SPCA when his owner of ten years moved into Assisted Living and could not take “Junie” with her. We’ve all fallen in love with this little guy and are determined to help in this heartbreaking situation. Our hope is to find a good home for Junior and have him come back to Dog Days daily so his former owner can watch him playing on the web cams and share in his joy. To this end, we are extending to Junior a LIFETIME DAYCARE PASS to DOG DAYS. And Junie has plenty of life left. He runs and plays like a four-year old and has adjusted well to his foster home at Dog Days. Junie is great with dogs and kids and I know from our walks through downtown, he is very good with cats. He just needs a loving home. Please help if you can. Call 272-1620 for more information or visit us at 705 Battleground Avenue in Greensboro.

FROM THE EDITORS

I

t’s been a busy month, time seems to fly by so quickly. Summer still has us in it’s grip, but today a bit of fall was in the air. All the outside critters will appreciate a break in the heat, hope everyone is filling the bird baths and making sure any outside animals have plenty of clean water. Please check out our calendar on page 48, some local events are starting up in August - adoption fairs, seminars and specials on spay/ neuter. The SPOT Mobile Spay/Neuter Wellness unit is offering a $20.00 special through August 8, call 336-279-0563 for details. Remember spay/neuter is the answer, we cannot adopt ourselves out of this situation. Our shelters and rescues are overflowing with unwanted animals. Do your part to stop this vicious cycle and encourage family members and friends to do the same. We have a new team member, Steph Skardal, our photographer. Steph has worked with Project Pearl in Winston-Salem taking photos of the Forsyth County Animal Shelter’s animals. Not only is she very talented, but her love for animals is evident. We welcome her and are looking forward to working with such a dedicated professional.

This month’s cover story focus is special needs animals. Take a minute to read their stories and perhaps open your heart to someDeb Printup Jennifer Frazier one who is slightly different, but never lacking in love and devotion. And once again we’d like to thank the veterinarians and trainers who contribute valuable information to our publication. Also, we want to thank the writers and artists who add some editorial and visual interest to our magazine. Lastly, our advertisers are the life blood of our magazine. Without them, we would not be here, so please patronize them whenever you have the opportunity.

Thanks!

Please look over the list of businesses below and support them whenever possible. These companies are the reason we are able to offer the shelters and rescue organizations free space every month. He is relaxed around dogs, cats, and people, like many Maine Coon types. The Colonel developed an oral infection necessitating the removal of all but 4 of his teeth, but can still eat dry food, and enjoys canned food now as well. Cover Story

Animal Adoption & Rescue Foundation The Least of These By Janice Freeman

H

e looked out from behind the stainless steel bars, eyes infected, almost to the point of being completely shut. Somehow he seemed to know that if no one noticed him in this high-kill animal shelter, his fate was sealed. “He spoke to me,” his AARF rescuer shared. Buddy, as he was later named, was one of the lucky kitties. Weeks of eye

medications and lots of special care were provided, and now he awaits adoption to a new family. Throughout its years of operation, AARF has been committed to rescuing animals with all types of special needs, some more serious than others. It may mean extra expenses and plenty of additional time spent, but to the volunteers at AARF it is all worthwhile. Nearly blind from a genetic eye disease, Little Man, a tiny gray poodle, was found trying to cross a busy street with a shoestring attached to a dirty collar. After being examined and tested by veterinary specialists, it was determined that there is nothing that can be done to correct the problem, but Little Man struts his stuff and walks proudly across the room and plays with other dogs as if nothing

Little Man 12

August 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

Bubba is wrong. Being blind doesn’t seem to deter his appetite or his ability to follow his foster mom outside, and he especially loves taking a nap with his head securely on her shoulder. Don’t tell Little Man that he can’t see. He sees clearly that he is fortunate enough to have found people who care. Both Bubba and Downy, tiny kittens, were found after being hit by cars and left to die in the road. Luckily, both were saved by individuals who stopped and picked them up. In both cases the rescuers did not know what to do, could not afford their care, and turned to AARF. Bubba’s front leg had to be amputated almost immediately. Throughout his recovery, one of AARF’s faithful cat fosters cared for Bubba, provided special love and attention, and helped him through his healing process. At last report, Bubba is running, jumping, and playing as if he doesn’t even miss the lost appendage. Downy’s story is almost identical. Given lots of love, Downy will,

Above is Bubba, whose front leg had to be amputated. He is in a loving home now, running, jumping and playing as any other cat would. Left is Little Man, who is nearly blind from a genetic eye disease. He is still looking for his forever family.

no doubt, achieve the same great quality of life, thanks to special funding provided through AARF. Dogs and cats with special needs are often cast aside by their owners. Sometimes it’s because the expenses are too great to absorb or maybe just because the owners are tired of dealing with the problems. It is often these animals who come into our program because an AARF volunteer is willing to take on the challenge and wants to make a difference in the lives of these dogs and cats. Chia, an English Toy Spaniel, is one such little dog. Chia came to AARF with a severe heart murmur and bad knees. She won the heart of a special AARF foster mom after her owner decided that he was moving and no longer wanted Chia. It did not take Chia long to find out that her favorite things are lying in the sunshine, having her back and

belly rubbed, and enjoying special treats. Dusty, a large dark orange tabby, was another “disposable” pet. His owner decided that she no longer wanted him when she planned to marry and move away. There simply was no room for Dusty in the new home. What compounded the problem was that Dusty has vision problems, a situation that many would consider even more undesirable. AARF was willing, once again, to take on the challenge of a special needs animal, and as of this writing, Dusty is enjoying life in a new home with a loving couple who has seen beyond his vision problems. Then there is King Tux, abandoned in a cat carrier on someone’s door steps. He was in sad shape, and looked like he knew he had been left like trash on someone’s porch. He is FIV positive, but after loving care and medical attention, he is doing well.

Special situations, additional medical expenses, challenging circumstances are all a routine part of the volunteers and programs at AARF. The stories that you have just read are only the proverbial “tip of the iceberg”. Just because an animal is too old, too young, handicapped, or has other special needs does not mean that they are not worthy of a second chance at finding a wonderful new home. Below left is King Tux. He is FIV positive but is doing well and hopes to find his forever family soon. Below right is Chia, who has a severe heart murmur and bad knees. Chia is also looking for a loving family to call her own.

He does not like being cooped up in his kennel here, but once he comes out on a leash, he is a sweet, happy guy. Rusty would love to be part of a family that will play with him or take him for walks every day. He is neutered and current on his shots. Half of Rusty’s adoption fee is being sponsored so he is available for $40. Come meet him at the Burlington Pet Adoption Center, 221 Stone Quarry Rd., Haw River or call 578-0343 for more information. n

FORTY CIRCLES… THEN DOWN. Your Aging Pet and the Importance of Geriatric Screening

Q A

My dog, a 13 year old Lab, pants a lot now. He has a hard time lying down and seems to be losing his hearing. What do you think is going on? Is this just old age? What should we do? Yes, some of these symptoms can be attributed to old age. Your 13 year old Lab is not unlike your 91 year old grandparent who has to wear a sleep apnea monitor, has 2 replaced hips, is on a slew of medications that require a pill calendar to know what to take when, and watches television with the volume control on 99. But it may not be just old age… I just lived through this with my late 15 year old Labrador, Sampson. The panting. The 40 circles to lie down. Then right back up and another 40 circles to lie down, again. He lost all his hearing. He lost lots of weight and muscle. He became progressively weaker to the point where his rear legs would begin to give out while he was standing and eating. We had to slide his food bowl around the kitchen every few seconds just to keep him “chasing” his food, in order to keep his legs from sliding. This became kind of a game to help Sampson eat. Maybe this isn’t your story. Maybe your dog has become increasingly lazy and is gaining lots of weight; or maybe your cat is losing weight and will not stay out of the water or food bowl. Perhaps you keep discovering new bumps on your dog or that the wet spot on the dog bed every morning isn’t from licking, it’s actually urine. These are just a few of the common clinical signs that owners relay to their veterinarian in the exam room, and they are very important concerns. They underlie the importance of annual physical exams and laboratory testing recommended by your veterinarian. As your pet becomes older, your veterinarian may recommend doing a geriatric physical exam and geriatric laboratory screenings. An annual geriatric screening may consist of an in-depth physical exam, blood work and urinalysis, radiographs (x-rays) of your pet’s chest and abdomen, evaluation of their blood pressure and additional diagnostic tests to further assess your pet’s health, based on exam findings. One of the important reasons for geriatric screening is early detection of a disease. Many diseases in the body are chronic or have a slow and insidious onset. Often times, the early stages of the disease may have no appreciable clinical sign. During the physical exam your

veterinarian may detect lumps and bumps, weight loss, weight gain, heart murmur or painful joints that you may or may not have noticed. A CBC or complete blood count should be performed to assess your pet’s red and white blood cell count numbers to look for signs of anemia, infection, bleeding disorders and certain cancers. Other blood work, called a blood chemistry profile, can be used to monitor the health of specific organs like your pet’s kidneys, liver and thyroid. Radiographs (x-rays) should be performed to look for visible changes in your pet’s bones and joints, as well as their organ size and shape (heart, lungs, liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder, etc). Occasionally, we find evidence of early arthritis or an abnormally enlarged/shaped organ that may have otherwise gone undetected. Additional testing such as blood pressure assessment in cats, eye pressure measurement in dogs (important in breeds prone to glaucoma) and an ECG to monitor your pet’s heart health may also be performed. Why do we need to do this exam and testing every year? The reason for an annual geriatric exam is simple: Your pet ages much quicker than you do. A lot can change in their health in just a year. As a professional, I believe proactive medicine instead of reactive medicine equals better patient care. My hope is to help give pets the best quality of life they can have. Early detection through these diagnostic tests can lead to better outcomes for the management of certain chronic diseases. Old age can be tough on pets and caring for them can be stressful and concerning. But we don’t have to just arrive there one day and wonder what happened. Through annual geriatric screenings, you can be educated on your pet’s health. Recommendations can be made for diet changes, exercise, physical rehabilitation, additional diagnostics, medications, or surgery that can help maintain or improve your aging pet’s quality of life. Preventative care is the best way to keep your pet happy and healthy for as long as possible. Yes, your pet is aging and with age things start wearing out. It is amazing how advances in veterinary medicine and the strengthening of the human/animal bond have led to much longer life spans in our pets. With all the joy that they bring us, we owe it to them to provide the best health care to maintain a great quality of life. She is three years old and is updated on all of her shots. She is totally blind in one eye and partially blind in another for reasons unknown. She is on prescription canned food for cystitis and will need to continue to prevent any episodes. She is a sweet, loving calico/Siamese mix who loves to be brushed and petted. You could call Amy “Special Needs” but we prefer not to other than to say she is beautiful, inside and out!

found wondering at a car dealership in Kernersville. She has never met a stranger. Her foster mom picked her up and she quickly acclimated to her new home. Autumn gets along with other cats. She loves to be with people, likes to be petted and is no trouble at all. In addition to her good looks, she will warm your heart with her sweet and loving ways. was born in September 2012 to a Pit Bull mix that had 6 happygo-lucky puppies. Mama had a wonderful personality and the apple did not fall far from the tree. Scottie and his siblings were soon adopted. We received a call from Scottie’s owners that they could no longer keep him due to the family dynamics changing. Howie is almost crate-trained and is close to becoming house-trained also. He lives with cats and dogs in his foster home and loves to play with both. Howie was born around 2/15/13 and is ready to find his forever home.

FERAL CAT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM 336.378.0878 / www.feralcatassistance.org

Boo was rescued from outside a fast food restaurant along with his siblings and another litter of kittens. He is an absolutely adorable solid black little boy. He is a typical young kitten with lots of energy and curiosity. He is going to grow into an irresistible little guy as time goes on. Of course, we think he is already irresistible. Boo is FeLV negative, he has age appropriate shots, is neutered and microchipped. His adoption fee is $60. Call 378-0878 for more information. n

Brooke, a long haired beauty, was born in a colony of feral cats. Her mom was feral, but you can tell by her picture that Brooke is already a snuggler and definitely not feral. Brooke does what typical young kittens do - eats, sleeps and plays. She is too cute for her own good and is on her way to becoming an even more endearing little furball. Brooke is FeLV negative, and has age appropriate vaccinations. She will be spayed/microchipped in the very near future. Her adoption fee is $60. Call 378-0878 for more information. n

Janie

Whitney

is an absolutely gorgeous solid blue domestic short hair. She is declawed. Janie is a very special girl and is in need of a special human companion with lots of understanding and love to give this kitty. Though very difficult to comprehend, she was dumped at the shelter after 12 years of living with a family that she believed loved her. Fortunately, FCAP was able to rescue Janie from the Shelter and she is more than ready for her forever home. This beautiful and sweet girl deserves a wonderful home with people who will love her for life and never let her down again.

was rescued, along with her siblings, one being little Boo, from a fast food restaurant. She is an adorable Tuxedo but with some distinctive markings on her face. Gracie.

Carolina Basset Hound Rescue

Oooo ooo ooo, Miss Grace – but you can call me Gracie! And I’m just what you need to make your summer complete! I’m crazy about treats and belly rubs (but really, who isn’t?) and I’m looking for my forever home. I’m about 7 years young with plenty of pep in my step and as sweet a gal as you’ll ever find. I’ll be rid of these pesky heartworms in no time flat, and we can start our life together.

For information about Gracie or our other adoptable Basset Hounds, please visit our website at www.cbhr.com, or email Rebecca Gering at rebecca.gering@cbhr.com. n

Oliver. Hi! I’m Oliver. I am a sweet

Chihuahua Rescue

tiny little guy whose foster mom says I’m the greatest. I love to run around, chase and play with the other Chihuahuas in my foster home and I don’t mind the larger Greyhounds either. I love shaking the dickens out of socks and stuffed animals, but what I really like is to snuggle and sleep under the covers. I am house-trained and will let you know when I have to go outside. I’m up-todate on shots, neutered and on HW preventative. Won’t you please adopt me and give me a forever home?

Stop by and see all the wonderful cats we have for adoption!

Colonel Mau Mau

If you’d think you’d like to give me a forever home, please contact my foster mom for an application at wildlifeed2@aol.com. n

Buzz is a four year old soft wire hair and weighs about 18 lbs. His color is red on his undercoat with creamcolored soft hair on his top coat. His eyes are ice blue and he will just stare at you with all the love he has to Almost Home Dachshund Rescue give. Buzz is house-trained, crate-trained, and good on a leash. He actually will go into a crate when commanded to “crate” or “let’s go to bed.” He is a very smart Dachshund who does fine with the foster home’s grandchildren. Respectful children ages 7 and above are OK. We think Buzz would do best in a home as an only dog, or in a home with a larger alpha female. He is fully vetted and has no known health issues. Visit www.almosthomerescue.org to read more about Buzz. n

Surrendered to GCAS back in 2007, as a young adult cat (he’s probably 8 or 9 yrs. old now), Colonel Mau, a Maine Coon mix, lived as the GCAS mascot, spending most of his time supervising outdoor activities near the intake building. He is relaxed around dogs, cats, and people, like many Maine Coon types. The Colonel developed an oral infection necessitating the removal of all but 4 of his teeth, but can still eat dry food, and enjoys canned food now as well. He has adjusted very well to indoor life and watching over the tiny foster kittens in employees’ offices. Up-to-date on all his shots, negative for FeLV, neutered, and microchipped. Call 336-297-5020, Guilford County

Animal Shelter, to give this great fellow a loving indoor home.

AFRICAN PENGUINS Steal the Show at the Carolina SciQuarium By Steffany Reeve, Marketing Manager Greensboro Science Center

T

riad residents no longer have to travel out of state to see some of the world’s cutest birds. Eleven African Penguins moved into Greensboro this summer with two more coming in the fall and now call the Carolina SciQuarium at the Greensboro Science Center home. Also known as jackass penguins because of their donkey-like bray, the African penguins at the SciQuarium are the first permanent exhibit of penguins in North Carolina. This species of penguin is native to the south-western coast of Africa and is the only penguin species to breed on the continent. African penguins are generally 24-27 inches tall and 4-11 pounds, with males being slightly larger than the females. The average lifespan for both sexes is 15 - 20 years, though there are records of them living closer to 30 under human care. Similar to other penguins, African penguins appear to be dressed for a formal occasion sporting black feathers on their backside and white feathers on their bellies. The black and white patterns found on each penguin are as unique as human’s fingerprints and are actually a form of camouflage called counter-shading. In the ocean, the white underside makes it difficult for predators swimming below to see them and the dark side makes it difficult for predators swimming above to see them. About 80% of penguins’ diet is fish, so they are often found swimming and hunting in the ocean making this camouflage an important factor in their survival. Every year, both sexes molt, or lose all their feathers. When it

happens, depends on light cycle. Molting can be a very stressful and energy-intensive process that usually lasts four to six weeks. Because penguins do not eat during this time, they gorge on fish during the weeks leading up to a molt and can actually double their body weight during the time leading up the event. Also during this time, penguins do not swim since they have no insulation. African penguins breed in monogamous pairs and return to the same site year after year. They generally start breeding at the age of four and females generally remain fertile for 10 years. In nature, they will lay two eggs in burrows dug in guano or sand, usually protected by bushes or other low-lying foliage. Incubation duties are shared equally between the mates – a period that lasts roughly 40 days. After hatching, the parents alternate guarding the chick(s) for about 30 days, after which the chick will join other chicks looked over collectively while individual parents take turns foraging. The staff at the Greensboro Science Center hopes that several of its new penguins will become breeding pairs and produce lots of babies in the future! The worldwide population for African penguins has fallen precipitously since the 1900’s, declining by about 90%. Threats include commercial fishing, oil spills, and global-warming-related shifts in the climate. In 1910, there were approximately 1.4 million adult birds in a single population on Dassen Island and now the world population is estimated to be less than 179,000. African penguins are one of the many endangered animals managed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Program.

PENGUIN FUN FACTS: • Penguins have more feathers than any other bird. • There is no external way to tell males and females apart. • While swimming, they can reach speeds of 15mph and hold their breath for 2.5 minutes. • In the SciQuarium, male penguins have an armband on their left arm and females have one on their right arm (because females are always right!). To see these amazing birds in person, visit the Center at 4301 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro. www.triadhappytails.com August 2013

RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com

Cooper came to Red Dog Farm after being found as a stray. He is very sweet and pretty laid back for a younger fella. Cooper loves to play ball and doesn’t seem to mind other dogs or cats. This young dog just aims to please. If you are interested in learning more about Cooper, please visit www.reddogfarm.com for information! n

Willow was originally adopted from Red Dog Farm as a puppy. Unfortunately, her owners were unable to keep her due to life changes. She is now doing great in her foster home. She gets along well with dogs, cats, and kids. Willow is quite the sweetheart and has a very soft side. Her only downfall is that she needs some medication to help with a leaky bladder. She is currently on an inexpensive drug called Proin to help keep her bladder muscles tightened. She hopes that her medication won’t prevent her from coming home with you. To adopt Willow, please visit our website, www.reddogfarm.com! n

Lulu is a three year old Pot Bellied pig who is very tame and used to being petted. She can be a bit bossy if she doesn’t get her way, so she would be best suited for an experienced pig owner who knows how to be a strong alpha. She came to us overweight and is currently on a diet, so she needs to continue that diet in her new home. She is very cute and will make a great pet for the right person. Lulu is quite a dominant pig, so we would love to find her a home with another dominant pig that could teach her some pig manners. Pot Bellied pigs need shelter from the elements and a sturdy fence and room to run and root with their noses. To adopt Lulu, please visit www.reddogfarm.com! n August 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

Charlie came to Red Dog Farm when his owner got called for duty. Unfortunately, Charlie had nowhere to go and came to RDF. He is a fantastic dog who does well with other dogs and cats. He has responded well to our volunteers and is just a social guy. Charlie is very respectful in the house and of our office cat’s space. This boy has been vaccinated, microchipped, and is already neutered. If you are interested in adopting Charlie, please visit our website, www.reddogfarm.com! n

Louie

came to Red Dog Farm when his owners could no longer care for him. He is a very friendly rabbit who loves to be held. He loves to eat his veggies, especially parsley. We are working on litter box training him and we think he is catching on quickly. Please stay tuned for more updates on Louie. If you are interested in adopting Louie, please visit www.reddogfarm.com! n

Lucky

(pictured) is a 14 year old mare who came to us with Irish, a 6 year old paint gelding. They were abandoned on a nearby farm over a year ago. They have now been evaluated and vaccinated by our veterinarian and will have their teeth floated once they are healthy enough for sedation. Lucky is shy at first, but once haltered she has beautiful ground manners and may have been a show horse at one time. Both horses are small (approximately 14.2 hands) and we are unsure of their breed. Lucky is a beautiful mover. They are both gaining weight and have started training under saddle. If you are interested, please visit www.reddogfarm.com! n

The Honest Day by J. Bradfield McConnell

he man returned home from his work. He opened the door to his home and was greeted, most generously, by the dog. Black and white, the dog took on the appearance of someone who knew something no one else understood. He rose from the ground just taller than the man’s knees. When he was not sleeping or on guard, the dog smiled, always. “Get in the truck, boy.” Christmas and New Years Day, all at once. Giddy, the dog jumped in the cab, bristling. The man turned the key. The pond was quiet. Serene. The dog jumped in the boat. The man untied it from the dock. Then he connected the wires to the battery. Rotating the tiller, the motor propelled them toward the long shadows on the west side of the pond. “Top water.” “Woof.” The man tied on a Devil’s Horse that had belonged to his grandfather. It was a charm.

T

Cast. Splash. The dog stood on the seat and watched the lure at the center of the riffles. He knew. When the riffles dissipated, the man reeled in the slack. Then he jiggled the rod. Motion. Bubbles. Over and again. Fourth cast. Third jiggle. The water exploded. “Woof, woof, woof.” “Yeah!” The bass was a leviathan. It took time. Patience. Skill. Eagerly, the dog looked on as the man played her. She had great will. Jumping, he pulled her back in the water before she could throw the hook. In time, the man drew the fish in. He reached over the gunnel. Then he captured the fish by the center of its lower jaw. Raising the fish, she was certainly the bass of a lifetime. He thought of the bass that adorned his wall. It never struggled. It was dying. “Tell me.”

Homer by Fowler Ruffin, www.PinchMeAcres.com

“Woof, woof, woof.” After releasing the fish, the man navigated the small boat to the dock. More casts would spoil it. Time to go home. The woman was in the kitchen. He kissed her. The dog looked on. The hunters were back in the den. The pack was reunited. “How was fishing?” “Just winding down with the boy.” “Any luck?” The man looked at the dog. He winked. The dog tilted his head leftward. “The fish left us alone, today.” The woman smiled and kissed him. Dinner would be ready soon. www.triadhappytails.com August 2013

A Lifesaving Donation

Longtime residents, Buddy and Susan Weiss, presented the KPD K-9 unit with six canine oxygen masks.

Couple donates K-9 rescue apparatus to the Kernersville Police Department By Wendy Freeman Davis, Features and News Editor Kernersville News

T

This isn’t the first time the Weisses have donated pet oxygen rescue masks. They previously donated three such masks to the Kernersville Fire Department to have on hand in case a pet at a fire call needs assistance. “This came about after seeing an article in the news about how fire departments resuscitate pets, and I got to thinking, how does the Kernersville Police Department and other departments protect their K-9s,” explained Buddy Weiss. Weiss said the six masks donated to the KPD on Monday were specifically designed to fit the dogs that serve on the department’s K-9 team. Each handler will have one available should the need arise. “We’re just trying to give back. This is something every one of these dogs can benefit from, although I hope they never have to,” said Buddy Weiss. KPD Capt. Steve Bowman was on hand for Monday’s presentation, as was Kernersville Mayor Dawn Morgan and K-9 handlers Officer J.F. Stokes with Neko and Officer C.M. Queen with Nitro. “If one of our K-9s is in trauma and not breathing, the K-9 handlers will be able to give CPR to the dog using these masks,” said Bowman. “We hope we never have to use one, Pictured left to right: Susan and Buddy Weiss, Mayor Dawn Morgan, Capt. On Monday morning, longtime residents Buddy and Susan Weiss presented the KPD K-9 unit with six canine oxygen masks designed to provide lifesaving treatment should any one of the animals need resuscitating. “These K-9s are hardworking and are police officers, too,” said Buddy Weiss. “When they are tracking in 100-degree temperatures, they can go in distress just like humans can. Unfortunately, there are no methods to revive them unless EMS is there.”

like the Weisses think about something like this and donate. This is something they are very passionate about.” Bowman said the dogs that serve with the KPD are just as important as their human counterparts. “They are just like one of our officers and are a valuable part of the department. They have a job to do and they enjoy doing it,” said Bowman. “These dogs are a part of our police family.” Morgan was appreciative of the Weisses and their generosity regarding an issue not normally reported on or thought about in the public arena. “What a wonderful contribution by the Weisses to our police department. This will be a benefit and could well be needed for one of our K-9s who are working with officers to keep our community safe,” said Morgan. Morgan said the K-9 unit has been an asset to the community since the department received its first crime dog in the mid-1990’s. Not surprisingly, it was the Weisses who contributed that original K-9 officer to the KPD. “It’s really wonderful to have this capability in Kernersville and these K-9s are now available every shift,” said Morgan. “Having the K-9’s in the police department allows citizens and especially children to learn more about law enforcement.” Morgan said the K-9s and their handlers often conduct demonstrations and participate in events throughout the community, in addition to aiding the department in criminal investigations, searches for suspects and evidence and help in locating missing persons. The Weisses hope to continue supporting K-9 units throughout the area with similar donations. “We want to continue to try to outfit the different police departments and fire departments in the Triad and want to see all of the K-9s in service here have these masks,” said Buddy Weiss.

Training Your Pet

LIVING WITH A SHY DOG by Jan Wilson, Certified Professional Dog Trainer Dog-Gone Fun Dog Daycare

A

people-shy dog is easy to spot. Their tail is tucked. Their body can be low to the ground and they don’t like to give eye contact. This type of dog has chosen a passive response to their fears. They don’t want confrontation and want to desperately remove themselves from the presence of strangers. This is not the only fear response a dog can show. Depending on past experiences and breed predisposition, aggression can also be linked to fear. For the purposes of this article, I will be focusing on the dog who displays the more passive response. Why are some dogs naturally more cautious? There are breeds that are more cautious by nature and it can be observed in their behaviors. Other dogs come into our lives with an unknown history. It is hard to tell why they are fearful of humans. It is common to assume they were abused by previous owners which may be a possibility. However, they could have fallen victim to social isolation. They could have spent the critical socialization period from eight weeks old to sixteen weeks old with limited human contact. It does not matter how the fear came about. It is an emotional response that is very real to them. Emotions cannot be changed overnight and this takes time and patience.

MANAGEMENT Before you can help your dog become more comfortable around strangers, it is important to manage the environment you live in by not making the situation worse. If your dog is afraid of strangers coming into the home, allow him the ability to move away from the person. Do not force him to greet the stranger and instruct the visitor to ignore your dog. They should give him no eye contact or outstretched hands and make no movement towards him. It is important that your dog feels protected and safe in his home by having strangers respect his personal space. You can help your dog by putting him behind a baby gate or in a crate away from the front door, this may help his anxiety. It will also allow him to observe people and get used to seeing them while feeling safe in his own area. When your dog is on a leash or in your arms, greeting strangers may make him anxious, since your dog has no escape route. His fear could cause him to bite in self-defense. If you are on a walk and someone would like to pet your dog, you need to protect your dog by saying “no”, because strangers make your dog nervous. If the dog is pulling to get away from someone, respect your dog’s wishes and retreat.

42

August 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

When your dog exhibits these behaviors it means the situation is too overwhelming for him. Avoid crowded public areas while walking your dog.

BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION After managing the fearful situation, it is time to help your dog turn a scary experience into a more relaxed one. This involves desensitizing your dog to strangers. This is done by exposing him to strangers FROM A DISTANCE. A distance close enough that your dog will notice they are there, but far enough away that your dog can take treats and respond to you. This is called your dog’s threshold. You can then begin counter conditioning. Shower your dog with a reward that he truly loves, while the stranger is still in sight. The treats should be extra special, for example, chicken, cheese or roast beef. Find out what he truly likes. When the stranger moves from sight, the treats go away. Repeat the exercise at this distance until your dog sees the stranger and gets excited for the special treat. It is then time to decrease the distance by a small amount and repeat the exercise. There are many obedience exercises and behaviors that you can teach your dog to do below their threshold. Your dog will be more successful if he has something else to do rather than focus on his fears. In this article, I have only hit the highlights of a successful behavior modification program. I would suggest discussing your dog’s behaviors with a qualified animal behaviorist or experienced trainer to help you train your dog correctly and safely.

Chilly Willy

M

y name is Chilly Willy. I’m a rescued part Norwegian Forest Cat and I’m not telling what else. I arrived at my owner’s porch in February, 13 years ago. Van Denton was calling for freezing temperatures overnight. Bob didn’t want to bring me inside with his other cats, since I had a runny nose and eyes and I had not been to the vet to get checked out. So he put me inside of his pickup with a litter box and food and water and plenty of towels to snuggle in to keep warm. He had to go to work, so I hung out on the porch all day. Bob came home and Van Denton was saying that it was going to be even colder tonight. Bob was worried that it would be too cold to stay in the truck again. So he decided to put me in the bathroom and close the door, that way I couldn’t come in contact with the other cats. During the night he got up to use the bathroom, but he couldn’t find the door, he turned on the light and the bathroom door was open. I was laying on the waterbed with the other cats. We never told who opened the bathroom door. He took me to the vet, I got some medication

by Bob Ketay - Runner up in our Cover Model Contest

for my cold and a clean bill of health. Bob made an appointment to get me fixed. Since I was now part of this family, I needed a name. Bob gave this a lot of thought and since I showed up on the coldest night of the year, he named me Chilly. This was fine for about a month; I was worried that someone could call me Chilly Dog. So Bob decided to call me Chilly Willy. He decided to take me for walks with him, which led to hiking with him; but there was a problem. A hike that took Bob two hours, took us four hours to complete. So even though I liked going hiking, walking on a leash and harness was too slow for Bob. He did what any responsible pet owner would do. He bought me a carrier at the pet store. This worked for a while, but I outgrew it and it kept moving around on his chest as we hiked. One day he was shopping and spied these Rubbermaid pet carriers. He got one and it works great. He puts his arms through the straps and it hangs over his head and I lay in it. He keeps it unzipped so I can stick my head out and look around. I love my Rubbermaid.

Bob & Chilly Willy on the trail. Bob not only takes me hiking with him, he also takes me to the pet store so I can see the birds and the other critters. I am living proof that if you rescue a stray/ shelter animal and give it plenty of TLC you might be pleasantly surprised with what you get. Please excuse any mistakes, it’s hard to type with all the fur between my paws!

A LOVING COMPANION FOREVER by James Colasanti Jr.,

It was the autumn of 1955. We had left the comforts of the city to visit our cabin in the mountains in upstate New York seeking to harvest fresh mushrooms from the nearby woods. The cooling Adirondack air lay sedately over the pastureland and cornfield that surrounded the perimeter of our property. White fluffy cumulus clouds passed silently overhead giving a momentary shade and a special clarity to the earth below. As we walked, streaming sunlight dappled the pathway with both light and dark patches. My dog and my first best friend, Butchy, led the way. At the time she was 6 years old as was I. Both of us had been born in 1949. My father, James Sr., followed directly behind the dog. Butchy was a spayed female Terrier-Hound mix who was given to my parents as a baby shower gift. My father had named her Butchy because he felt she was just too feisty to have a girl dog’s name. I followed close behind my father with my mother, Mary, and my Aunt Tina bringing up the rear. On the outskirts of the woods that bordered the two acre cornfield, we came upon an outcropping of fallen logs. We all sat to rest our weary limbs. Mushrooming in our family was an inherited art. My folks were very skilled at finding the terrestrial fungi and knowing which were edible and which were not. We paired off with each other to search in different parts of the thickly wooded forest. My mother and my aunt who were also adept at locating the elusive mushrooms were filling up their handmade wicker baskets at a steady pace.

Mushrooms were always a culinary delicacy at our house. My mother would fry them in extra virgin olive oil with garlic and assorted fresh herbs until they were crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. They were then served as a side dish or sometimes mixed with spaghetti and meatballs and sprinkled with parmesan cheese. My father, Butchy, and I headed toward the denser part of the forest where there were an abundance of decaying tree stumps. He knew the mushrooms grew prolifically there and they could be easily harvested. Butchy would watch us from nearby, and she too, would start to dig mimicking our actions. Although our baskets were not as full, we knew they soon would be. Butchy, whose hearing was as sharp and as keen as her sense of smell, stopped dead in her tracks. She had heard an animal, most likely a deer, in the thick brush below us. She darted -- her back legs pedaling through the fallen leaves kicking them up into the air as she ran. I screamed after her, “But-ttt-chh-yyyy!” But her speed knew no stop. She had seen her target and she was after it. We both knew that she would not hurt whatever it was she was chasing, but we didn’t want her going too far into the densely wooded center of the forest. My father whistled to her and although Butchy normally responded to this and to him, she did not come back.

Tears welled and started rolling down from the corners of my eyes. I was afraid I had lost my best friend. “She’s gone, daddy, she’s gone! What are we gonna do?” I yelled to my father. I was really afraid she was never coming back to me. The sun was beginning its descent behind the tallest pines terminating the daylight in our part of the forest. My father knelt down next to me, put his hands on my shoulders, and said, “Let me tell you this son, a dog is a companion and a friend like none other that you will ever have. When God made Earth and put people and animals upon it, he gave everyone a soul -- people and animals alike. Now there are some people who will try to tell you that animals don’t have souls, but you have to realize son that these are the same people who thought the earth was flat.” My father continued by telling me, “Dogs bond to you through your spirit and your soul. A dog is never ever lost to you if he or she can retrieve the scent of your soul. That is what will bring them back to you every time.” “Remember too, that each day you share with a dog is a gift. Rich or poor, healthy or sick, home or homeless, food or none, a dog will stand by you to the end—always happy to be at your side -- a partner and a loving companion forever.”

Whether or not I was fully able to comprehend everything my father was telling me, since I was only 6 at the time, I do not recall. But I do know in later years his words would replay themselves in my mind, over and over again, about all the things that dogs are to us. “And son,” he added, “never be afraid to give your heart to a dog. Now dry your eyes, it’s time for us to go, and take off your jacket and give it to me.” As we left the forest, my father lay my jacket on the ground near the path in front of the logs where we had been sitting earlier. At the time I didn’t know what my father was doing. But I did know better than to question it. The sun had now dipped behind the trees casting long shadows over the open pastureland matching my long face as we trekked back to the cabin for supper. Much later that evening we returned to the edge of the woods to the exact spot where we had first entered. Our flashlight beams scoured the path to the woods and came to rest on a familiar sight --two gleaming eyes reflecting back the glow from the beams looked up at us from the nest she had made in my jacket. Just as my father had known, my dog was there waiting for our return. I left the forest happy that night with my companion, Butchy. Our relationship would continue for another ten years with each of us learning from one another about trust, the joys of friendship, and the true meaning of unconditional love.
