ON THE COVER: Pearl is on the hunt for a special person to love. This gorgeous six years young silver tabby warms up slowly, but your patience will pay off. Although Pearl does not seek constant attention, she loves to lie in the sun near her human companion and appreciates petting and an occasional belly rub. You can see the love in her brilliant green eyes (check them out on the cover!). Pearl is a calm girl but also enjoys play time. She prefers to be your only kitty, but would adapt to life with a dog or another laid back cat. Pearl prefers the company of adults and teenagers. If you seek a beautiful cat who does not require lots of attention, Pearl may be the one. Contact Feral Cat Assistance Program at 336.378.0878 or go online at: www.feralcatassistance.org about Pearl.

Tinker. My name is Tinker, and I am a delicate little girl, just like my name implies. I am up-to-date on my vaccinations and I do well with other kitties. I will be spayed before you take me home. Everybody tells me I’m cute, and I would have to agree with them. Sometimes, when I catch my reflection, I just have to stop and stare! I will be happy to bring some pixie dust and sprinkle around your home as an added bonus. I am just waiting for the right person to make my life complete. Could that be you?

Vet’s Corner Dr. Jessica Taylor completed her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from North Carolina State University in 2000, and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. As a member of Guilford Jamestown Veterinary Hospital, she is looking forward to helping owners strengthen the bonds with their pets through preventative care and education. Her special interests include cardiology, pain and arthritis management, and endocrine diseases such as diabetes. Dr. Taylor is a member of the American and North Carolina Veterinary Medical Associations. Dr. Taylor lives with her husband, two beautiful daughters, a lazy hound dog, Indiana, and a very bossy, but adorable cat, Theo. She enjoys volunteering in her church and the community, including with Feral Cat Adoption and Placement. In her rare free time, she loves spending time with her family, especially outdoors, running and reading.
The weather is warm, the sun shining and the ticks are biting! This may not be what you’re thinking as you step out for a nice walk with your four legged friend, but you should. Our pets are constantly at risk for many diseases from pests and parasites. Here is what you need to know about ticks.
What are ticks? Ticks are not insects, but arachnids, and have eight legs. However, nymphs, or baby ticks can have six legs. Ticks do not fly or jump, but wait on grass, leaves and twigs, and sense when an animal or person is nearby through breath, vibrations and odor. They crawl onto the host as it brushes up against the object. We have ticks all year in North Carolina, not just during warm months! Ticks need to feed to survive. Unfortunately, ticks feed on blood. They attach themselves by burrowing under the first layers of skin and help themselves. Gross, right? It gets worse! While feeding, the tick can release certain bacteria, viruses, and organisms from it’s insides into the host’s skin and blood stream, potentially causing an infection.
Infection?! What kinds of infections? Ticks are known to transmit several serious and potentially life threatening diseases. Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Ehrlichia, Babesia and Anaplasma are just a few of the diseases that can be transmitted by ticks. These affect pets and people, and are serious health concerns in many areas. In North Carolina, we are seeing an increase in Lyme disease, as well as being a hot-bed for Ehrlichia and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Finally, ticks can also cause localized skin infections at the site of attachment. Just because you find a tick, it doesn’t mean that your dog has one of these diseases. But, the sooner we find out, the easier we can treat a problem. Be sure to let your veterinarian know if you have
removed ticks from your pet, especially if they are not feeling well. We now have fantastic tests that are often part of yearly heartworm screenings and can detect many of these conditions. Early detection is key! But prevention is even better…
How do we keep them away? Ticks are like little armored tanks - sneaky, dangerous, and difficult to kill. Thankfully, there are good tick prevention products out there to help. Your family veterinarian can discuss which option would be best for you and your family. Oral preventatives: Within the past year, new products that kill ticks with an oral pill have come on the market. These are very exciting because they will work if your dog goes swimming often or has sensitivities to the topical products. Topical products: There are numerous effective topicals that provide monthly tick control. Newer, veterinary strength options often kill ticks faster than some of the over the counter products. It is important to follow the directions carefully, as well as the weight range and species guidelines. Many topicals for dogs can be very toxic to cats. Tick Collars: Tick collars can be effective in helping to repel ticks, and can often be used with other products for extra tick control in high risk areas. However, tick collars need to be fitted properly, and usually do not work when wet. Many collars are toxic to cats, so check with the veterinarian if you have both cats and dogs. I found a tick!! What do I do? No prevention is 100%, and many products require that the tick bite before it can die. Our hope is that we can kill the tick quickly, before it has time to transmit any diseases. If the tick is dead, it means the product is working! We still need to remove the tick as soon as possible. There are many old-wives tales and remedies, but please don’t try them. Stick to the simple act of pulling it out for the best chance of removal and least chance of infection. 1. Part the hair around the tick to get a good view. 2. Use a pair of fine tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. 3. Use steady, upward force to pull the tick out. Do not twist or yank. 4. Clean the area with mild soap and warm water and monitor for any swelling or redness. 5. Do not try to burn, suffocate or crush the tick! If you are not up to it, or ticks just really gross you out, just call your veterinarian. Most are happy to remove the offending tick for you and discuss what you need to monitor for your pet. If you remove a tick, you can dispose of it by placing it in a jar with some alcohol. We all love sharing the outdoors with our pets, and our state provides ample options for exploring. Armed with knowledge about ticks and other parasites, we can better protect our pets and enjoy the time together!

You know those bottomless eyes that are time commitments turn out to be too much, waiting patiently, watching kitten after all big pools of love? Well, you guessed it. priorities change. And sometimes, a cute puppy get a new home. Before this turns They grow into them. Now as we all know, kitten grows to a teenager or adult without into a sob story, which is not my intention, I these creatures stay cute forever, but that getting a home. Stuff happens.

pull of the tiny little awkward thing being so little and cute and preciously clumsy? Well that really only lasts six months of this relationship. After that, what you see is what you get for the next 15 plus years. When you pick that older cat or dogwhat you see is what you get! For those of you out there that are control freaks, (takes one to know one so I am with you) what better control than to know EXACTLY what your pet will look like....forever!
3. Lastly, if you want to know who is truly going to appreciate what you did for them, well, you guessed it. That adult cat or dog knows what they went through, knows when they have it good and I am a believer that they appreciate what you did for them. Sure, some come with baggage, but nothing a little love and training can’t overcome. I mean a lot of you (me included) are not in your first marriage or relationship. We all come with “stuff ” but some of it
is good! So bring a little spice to this new relationship with someone who has “been around the block” a bit. While we want all creatures to have a home, regardless of age, I hope this article has provided a little food for thought on a choice that may be right for you. As the article is titled: kitten/puppy equals “What’s Behind Door #1” and adult equals “40 is the new 30”. Happy Adopting!
Feral Cat Assistance Program would like to introduce our adult cats to you in hopes you may see the one that is the perfect match for you! Take a moment to see what these gems have to offer. Your new best friend who loves watching Mad Men while eating extra butter popcorn as much as you do may be waiting! Don’t forget to check out Pearl on the opposite page. All cats featured here are up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed/neutered and microchipped. Please call 336-378-0878 if you are interested in meeting Pearl, Sage, Jangles, Stash or Munchkin.
Sage
is a husky and handsome boy who has matured beyond the frisky kitten stage. This longhaired tuxedo is about 3 years old, so he has experienced a bit of life. He is not easily startled and has a calm demeanor. Sage knows what he’s looking for in a new home. He would prefer a home where people respect his boundaries. Sage likes to follow his people around, much like a dog would. And he is actually the size of a small dog! Sage really loves his scratching post and is fond of his plush leopard-spotted bed. n
Stash.
An introvert at heart, Stash is a bit on the shy side. He wants to get to know you before he makes a commitment. You can trust him with your secrets – he won’t tell a soul. And if you are patient and love him for his required time period, you may earn this fine feline’s trust. This kitty is called a tuxedo, and Stash’s costume includes white boots. Tradition tells us that William Shakespeare owned a tuxedo cat, as did Beethoven and Sir Isaac Newton. n
Jangles
is one of several tuxedo cats currently available through FCAP. Like most tuxedos, Jangles is a friendly boy who seeks human contact. Tuxedo cats have a following among cat lovers. Some of the popular names for this type of cat include: Oreo, Panda, Zebra, Yinyang, Ritz, Boots, C.C. (Coffee & Cream), Eight Ball, Half & Half, Gala, and Moomoo. Jangles and his feline friends don’t mind if you change their names. (Although Jangles says he does NOT want to be called Moomoo.) n
Munchkin
is 5-6 years old, and although a little shy at first, likes nothing better than to curl up in a lap and purr himself to sleep. He has two favorite possessions. Show him his brush and he will follow you anywhere. He also loves his scratching post and will pull himself around the bottom in circles to attract your attention. This little furball loves to talk, and will carry on a conversation with you for as long as you will answer him. He loves being spoiled and would make a wonderful indoor lap kitty for someone who is looking for a soft affectionate friend. n

We believe the last weeks, days, and moments that an owner has with a pet are the most cherished times, and should be handled with dignity and love. By providing veterinary hospice and pet euthanasia services in the home, the human-animal bond is less disturbed, making a much more peaceful closing to a shared bond.

Lucy is a very
Kiki.
When KiKi first came to us, she was a mom of three. Then, she took on another orphaned kitten because she is just so sweet. Now she says, “It’s MY turn to be taken care of!” KiKi loves other animals and will make biscuits on your lap all day. She’s the perfect buddy!
playful and inquisitive little kitty. She loves playing with her sisters and cuddling with her foster sister who happens to be a Doberman. Lucy is outgoing and smart, and her cute antics will keep you entertained. She loves shoulder rides and lap naps. This little girl will make an excellent companion! is as sweet as she is beautiful. Lilly came into the program as a tiny baby, and KiKi offered to be her mamma. Now that Lilly is eating on her own, she is thriving and very playful! She loves other animals and all people. Sweet Lilly is hoping you will pick her!

Cary & Raleigh
Sweet Minnie was found as a stray. An HSAC volunteer got on his knees and reached to her, and she ran right into his arms! We don’t know much about Minnie’s previous life, but we do know a lot about her, now! She is a young adult, does great with other well-mannered dogs, and is quiet as a “mouse” in her crate. She’s so polite and loving- we hope you will give her a second chance! For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n
Ollie.
These two siblings could not be any cuter together! They love each other, but also love other animals, so it’s not required that they go home together. Cary loves to follow her people around and doesn’t mind telling you when she’s hungry. Raleigh is playful with other animals but he knows a good lap when he sees one and will settle down for a nap! Adopt Cary or Raleigh today!
The best word to describe this boy would be “lover”. He is a ball of cuddles and wrinkles. He came to the shelter in rough shape with a home-done ear cropping, but some TLC and antibiotics had him back to new in no time! He has always been nothing but sweet and he loves to give kisses. He is very energetic and loves to play with other dogs and kitties. He’s excellent with children of all ages! Adopt Ollie- you’ll be so glad you did!

RABBIT NUTRITION As veterinarians, we are tasked with understanding the biology and health requirements for many different types of animals. Unfortunately, not all animals were created equally and their nutritional requirements are unique to their design. In this article, I will review the rabbit gastrointestinal tract (GIT) biology and the unique nutritional requirements of rabbits. This is important, as rabbits are very popular small mammal pets. We receive inquiries from pet owners all over the Triad looking for a veterinarian who can care for their pet rabbit. We also receive weekly phone calls from distressed pet owners concerned because their rabbit is not eating and not producing feces. Unfortunately, this is too common and I believe results from being misinformed about the nutritional needs of a rabbit. Proper nutrition is critical to the health of your rabbit. Rabbits are herbivores and frequent feeders. They do not require high protein or sugary carbohydrates in their diet, and they do not need scheduled meals. Their diet should consist of grazing on grasses and herbs. Rabbits have a unique GIT that is completely reliant on fibrous plant material, in order to maintain the health, function and production of nutrients. Plant material is made up of digestible and indigestible fibers. The digestive tract of a rabbit is divided into three different sections: the stomach, the small intestines and the hindgut (cecum and colon). Unlike ruminant herbivores (cows), in which fermentation of digestible fibers occurs in their rumen or stomachs, rabbits are hindgut fermenters. Digestible fibers are broken down by good bacteria (normal microflora) in the rabbit’s hindgut (cecum). The symbiotic relationship results in a food source for the bacteria and energy source for the rabbit. The most important part of this symbiotic relationship is the production of a soft, mucous-y stool called a cecotroph. Cecotrophs
are a unique food source for the rabbit. They are directly ingested by the rabbit after passage from the anus. After reingestion of the cecotrophs by the rabbit, they are broken down in the small intestines as an important protein source for the rabbit. Many people mistake cecotrophs as diarrhea in their pet rabbit. This is not the case. It is not diarrhea, it is a normal part of the healthy rabbit nutrition plan. However, if you do see these left in the rabbit’s environment and the rabbit is not regularly consuming the cecotroph, then this is indicative of improper nutrition for the pet rabbit. Indigestible fibers are important to the rabbit GIT, as well. The indigestible fibers act to promote continuous proper motility of the GIT. They transport water through the GIT to the hindgut. They also help to remove hair from the stomach that your rabbit consumes through normal grooming. The end result of these indigestible fibers are the numerous firm, round fecal pellets your rabbit produces throughout the day. Without the indigestible fiber source, the specially designed GIT of the rabbit does not work, and your rabbit’s health will suffer. Grass hay is important in the dental health of your rabbit. Healthy rabbits chew grasses over long periods of time. This provides necessary filing of the rabbit’s molars and premolars in the back of their mouth. Without this grinding action, that only results from chewing grass hay, those teeth will grow abnormal sharp points that can damage the gum tissue in the mouth and result in pain and oral infections. Leading veterinarians in rabbit nutrition highlight the following diet recommendations for mature, adult rabbits weighing between 4-6 lbs. These are the guidelines we follow and recommend, as well. Most importantly, rabbits should receive unlimited access to good quality grass hay. These include Timothy, Orchard, Oat hay or Botanical grass. We recommend having two types of hay available for your rabbit at all times and rotate them throughout the year. Local pet stores should have these available. Oxbow is a top recommended brand. Many people ask… “Do the Timothy base pellets we feed suffice for hay?” No, they do not. Pellets are a concentrated feed source. Feeding pellets alone will over supplement your rabbit with too many nutrients that can alter and damage your rabbit’s sensitive GIT and lead to a serious illness. Pellets should be limited to ¼ to ½ cup of timothy based pellet per day. Also, feed 1-2 cups of fresh vegetables such as a mix of chopped up beet greens, broccoli, carrot and carrot tops, collard greens, mustard greens, parsley, and romaine lettuce. Fruit is not necessary, but can be offered only as a treat to your rabbit. This is great as a bonding time for you and your rabbit, as they really enjoy these treats. However, it is not meant to take the place of grass hay. Fruits such as 1-2 Tbsp of apple, melon, peach, plum, strawberry, blueberry, papaya, pineapple, and raspberry are good fibrous fruits to choose from. Fruits with a high sugar content such as banana and raisins should be avoided. For more information on rabbit nutrition please check out these owner resources: (1) House Rabbit Society, www.rabbit.org and (2) Oxbow Animal Health, www.oxbowanimalhealth.com.

Nola
is a 7 month Old Australian Shepherd, Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) mix. She’s an extremely smart and loving dog who knows basic commands, sit, down, stay. She’s very sweet natured and loves everyone she meets. She was an owner surrender because the owner did not have the time to give her what she needs. Nola would love a home with a fenced in yard, or plenty of walks and dog park visits. She is a very active dog, so she needs the space to get her energy worked out. Meet Nola at 311 Harvey Street in Winston Salem on Saturdays between noon and 3 or call 336-768-7387 and leave a message. Due to a home visit being a part of the adoption process she cannot be adopted outside a one hour radius of Winston Salem. n
Harvey
is a sweet, two year old, small Yorkie, weighing in at a whopping 5 pounds. His owner had to surrender him as she was unable to care for all of her dogs. He is friendly and adorable. Harvey is working on crate-training and is doing well with potty training in his foster home. He’s been neutered and is current with his shots. Meet Harvey at AARF’s Saturday adoption fairs from noon to 3pm at 311 Harvey (name is purely coincidental) Street or you can call 336-768-7387 and leave a message. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within a one hour radius of Winston-Salem. n
Duncan
is an intelligent orange and white tabby. He was born sometime in 2011 (just because he doesn’t know his birthdate does not mean he’s not smart!). His owner got married and there was no room for him in the relationship! He’s a love bug and would love to be your lap kitty. Visit www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption process or call 336-768-7387 and leave a message. n

Rocky's
my name. I’m a 2 year old, high energy, very sweet natured Feist & Terrier mix. I love playing with other dogs and toys. I really like to run and a nice fenced in yard would allow me some run and play time, however, I really like snuggling up and watching TV with my person. I am not very fond of men and probably will not do well in a home with men only. I’m house-trained and neutered and my shots are current. Meet me on Saturdays from noon until 4 at 311 Harvey Street in Winston Salem or call 336-768-7387 and leave a message. Due to a home visit being a part of the adoption process I cannot be adopted outside a one hour radius of Winston Salem. n
Buggle
is a 5 year old dilute calico kitty. She can make a game out of anything: hair ties, shoe inserts or her own tail. She bats her dry food around on the floor and pounces on it before eating it. She likes to sleep on the foot of the bed and will not keep you up at night. She likes to find cubby holes to sleep in during the day, like in the laundry hamper or your sock drawer. And, of course, she likes to watch for chipmunks and birds out the window. Buggle is shy at first, then becomes your best friend. She would do best in a household with another cat or two, but is afraid of dogs and not fond of squealing babies. Please visit www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption process or call 336-768-7387 and leave a message. n
Jed,
a short-haired, black male, would be a welcome addition to a loving home! Three year old Jed has been reared in a home with four other cats, and a dog. Inquisitive and playful, he is very affectionate and bright. Jed has been neutered and is up-to-date on all his inoculations. Perhaps, he might be the “perfect pet” for the right person! I get along great with other dogs and love people, and don’t you think I’m cute? I roamed the streets for a while as a stray until I found the people who brought me to Humane Society of Davie County. Bobbi is a one year old Pit Bull mix. She is small - only about 45 pounds. She was found in the woods under a log with her siblings at only 4 weeks old. She has come a long way from a sickly puppy dying of parvo to a spunky energetic dog. She loves to give kisses and play fetch. Bobbi does have anxiety in social situations outside of the home. She is afraid of cars and loud noises, probably trauma The Fort Rescue from her unfortunate beginnings. Due to her high energy she would do best in a home with older children. She does well with other dogs.

Logan is an American Pit Bull
Ruff Love Rescue
Terrier mix about 4 years old. He was found as a stray, emaciated and covered in fleas, but has completely recovered from his rough start. Personality doesn’t even begin to describe Logan! He is calm, goofy, fun, sweet, understanding, and just an awesome dog all around. He loves to go for car rides and is so happy to go meet new people, but he is perfectly content to just chill and hang out at home. If you want to meet this sweet boy, get in touch.
Logan would do best as an only dog or with a female playmate. If you’re interested in Logan, please visit ruffloverescue.com or you can email us at dogs315@northstate.net.

Samantha.
This tuxedo girl is the namesake of someone in the popular 70’s show Bewitched. Samantha is just as sweet and just as magical as the TV show Samantha. She loves to play and frolic but when it’s nap time, well, it’s nap time! Samantha was born on 3/25/14 and is being spayed this month. She is up-to-date on her shots and healthy. Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n
Parker.
Buff and white Parker is the curious younger brother type always following his siblings during playtime. He loves a good lap and loves belly rubs. Parker is a domestic short hair born on 4/22/14. He is due to be neutered on 8/7/14 and is current on all his shots. Parker is a real sweetheart and will be a great addition to any home. Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n
Oliver
is part Maine Coon and part lover! He is extremely personable and will make someone a great indoor kitty. Oliver was part of a family that took in too many cats. Attention was limited and the family finally realized that. ARFP volunteered to take in Oliver and he has been so happy. Oliver is two years old and loves everyone. He has blended in nicely while living at the Next Step Adoption Center. Oliver is neutered, up-to-date on his shots and will be a great addition to most any home. Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n
Frannie.
Who wouldn’t love a Frannie in their life? Frannie and her sister Charlie were abandoned with a college student when their owner left town. Unfortunately for Frannie she had a broken leg that no one had sought medical help for. Seven weeks in a cast and Frannie never even knew she had a broken leg! Go Frannie! Frannie has been spayed and is a delight to have around. She is a hearty girl that can, and will, play with the best of them. Frannie was born around January 1st, 2014. She is great in her crate and loves everyone! Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n
Joy
girl came to ARFP when a UNCG student was doing a favor for a friend and she was gifted two puppies that she did not ask for. Charlie is a great girl, almost 12 weeks old, and already working on potty training. She will soon be spayed and ready for her brand new home. Charlie is a Pit Bull mix and loves to play with anyone or any thing. She is good with cats and other dogs. Charlie is da bomb!
is a little Aussie/ Lab mix that was born mid March. She is an extra sweet puppy and has been a quick learner so far. Joy loves other dogs and plays well with almost any thing and everyone. Joy came to ARFP when her mother was abandoned and left to have her puppies underneath a barn. The nice owners of the barn found homes for as many of Joy’s siblings as possible. Joy is a delight to be around and never meets a stranger. Do you need a little joy in your life?

The Greensboro Science Center
RED, RUFFED & RARE By Erica Brown
S
eeing a red ruffed lemur up close and in person is a truly memorable experience… especially when one considers that these majestic animals are close to extinction in their native habitat of Madagascar. They are listed as Critically Endangered, one step below Extinct in the Wild on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The Greensboro Science Center’s Animal Discovery Zoo is home to a mixed species lemur exhibit consisting of ring-tailed, mongoose, and red ruffed lemurs. Currently, two red ruffed lemurs, Ara and Rusty, are featured. Ara has called the Center home since 1992, spending most of her 29 years here. Rusty just recently joined Ara on exhibit on July 30. For the last few years, Ara has been the only red ruffed lemur in the habitat. These lemurs typically live in groups and while she has thrived with the companionship of her ring-tailed and mongoose lemur friends, the exhibit had a vacancy for an additional red ruffed lemur. So, when a recent Species Survival Plan survey was released, the Center noted that there was an opening for a red ruffed lemur. As fate would have it, the Denver Zoo needed to find a home for Rusty. He had been living with his family, but as male lemurs reach maturity, they often separate from the family group. As Rusty is not recommended for breeding, the ideal situation was to move him into a non-breeding environment - like the Greensboro Science Center! Rusty is three years old and he’s quite a curious little lemur. Some of his favorite treats include Jell-O and Craisins. He likes his keepers a lot and seems to take to training like a champ. So far, this smart fellow has learned to stand on a scale and go into a crate. To distinguish between Rusty and Ara in the exhibit, look for Rusty’s birthmark: a black spot on his left shoulder. With thick, rust-colored fur and haunting yellow eyes, red ruffed lemurs are a beautiful animal to behold. With wild populations in such steep decline, there are a few simple steps we can take to help these magnificent animals’ chances for survival in the wild. First, rethink purchasing items made of rosewood from Madagascar. Illegal logging in the country has drastically decreased

the extent and quality of habitats for red ruffed lemurs. Reducing one’s carbon footprint by saving energy, recycling, buying local, planting native flora, etc. will also help preserve the remaining primary forests in the red ruffed lemurs’ range. Additionally, consider supporting facilities dedicated to lemur conservation, such as Duke Lemur Center, Lemur Conservation Foundation, and, of course, Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited zoos such as the Greensboro Science Center. Finally, knowledge is power. Share what you know about the threats red ruffed lemurs face and encourage your family and friends to take action, too!

Chilly. What a wonderful little chinchilla! Chilly is extremely friendly and loves chin scratches (under his chin). He enjoys exploring his room and frequently stops to check out the cat during his journey. Chilly would be a great family pet or a great companion for someone living in a smaller space. If you are interested in getting to know more about this little guy please visit our website at www.reddogfarm.com. n
Sugar
Taz.
Don’t let this little gentleman fool you with his name. Despite being named Taz he isn’t quite as much of a Tasmanian Devil as you might think. In fact, for a three year old Yorkie, his foster mom reports he is fairly low key. We think the name speaks more towards his cuteness, spunk, and walk than it does towards any sort of romping. Taz does well with other dogs, cats, and OK with kids. If you are interested in adopting little Taz please visit our website at www.reddogfarm.com for more information! n
Jack came to us with his sister,
is certainly very sweet without a mean bone in her body. She is a 1 year old, spayed Pug/Dachshund mix. She loves playing with the other dogs in her foster home and doesn’t mind the cat either. In fact, she seems to be quite the socialite at times. Sugar was raised with kids and appears to do well with them. She is still young so would need to be watched with any child until everyone knows each other well. Sugar is always up for a good time whether it’s watching a movie, taking a walk or “assisting” you with other chores around the house.
Jill, after being rescued from the middle of a busy street. They had to have all of their fur shaved just to get rid of the large number of fleas that they were covered in. Now that he is feeling better, Jack is ready to start the search for his new home. In the meantime he is busy learning to eat solid food, use the litter box and being a complete love bug! Jack is a sweetheart who loves to be held and give kisses on the nose. He is still young and won’t be available to go to his new home until early August, but we are accepting applications for this cute guy now.
Sugar would love to go home with you today. Looking to adopt a sweetheart? Apply at www.reddogfarm.com to fall in love today! n
If you are interested in adopting Jack please fill out an application at www.reddogfarm.com. n
Twinkle.
“When you wish upon a star…Anything your heart desires will come true...”. Twinkle is hoping for just that - her dreams to come true. She is looking for a loving home to give her some time to adjust to her new surroundings. Twinkle was scooped up from the streets because she was just too sweet to wander. We believe she was someone’s cat at one point and is now a little overwhelmed by all of the attention. She is warming up to her foster family and visitors but still gets stunned by all of the attention. She doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. Twinkle doesn’t mind other cats or dogs. She would make a fantastic cat for someone willing to be the family of her dreams. If you are interested in adopting Twinkle, please fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Randolph County SPCA Looking to a better future…
A mission of supporting a pet-friendly and compassionate community, committed to ending euthanasia of adoptable dogs and cats!
by Jan Williamson
The mission of Randolph County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RCSPCA) is to support a pet-friendly, compassionate community committed to ending euthanasia of adoptable dogs and cats by providing:
1. Community-based solutions to pet overpopulation, including a low or no-cost spay and neuter program. 2. An innovative program in schools, educating students about bite prevention and responsible pet ownership. 3. An easily accessible, uplifting adoption/community center. Randolph County has a serious problem with pet overpopulation, illustrated by the fact that over 6,000 dogs and cats are euthanized each year in the county shelter. Most of these animals are healthy when they enter the shelter and are euthanized because the shelter cannot care for them all. Most are adoptable, if only there were a system ready to prepare them and guide them to forever homes where they could be loved and responsibly cared for. Thus, spaying/neutering is the essential component for reducing pet overpopulation, and RCSPCA has obtained a bus which is used to transport over 25 dogs and cats each week to a clinic in Greensboro for spay and neuter surgeries. This program, which is staffed by 26 trained volunteers, has spayed and neutered over 500 animals to date, thus preventing thousands of unwanted animals from being born. In addition, the organization has placed in homes, or transported to nearby no-kill shelters, over 300 dogs, cats, and puppies. The RCSPCA also has a pilot “pet responsibility/bite prevention” weekly program in Farmer Elementary School, which is staffed by retired educators and several assistants, including three
canines. This program is expanding and eventually will be available to all elementary schools. Finally, RCSPCA plans to build a family-friendly, uplifting, state of the art adoption center and promote/support the adoption of animals from this center, with education and guidance from well-trained volunteers. The adoption kennels will be designed to be bright and attractive, durable, easy to sanitize, and supportive of the animals’ wellbeing and health. Each kennel will be roomy enough not to feel cramped but small enough to feel cozy. The placement and construction of kennels will allow animals, especially reactive ones, to be out of the sight line of other animals. Skylights will provide natural light, enhancing the physical well-being of animals and humans as well as being environmentally friendly. An appropriate HVAC system will supply proper ventilation, fresh air introduced on a continuous basis, and removal of any pet odors; plants will also enhance air quality and attractiveness. This well-designed kennel center, as well as the volunteers who socialize, groom, and train the adoptable pets, will insure that families can see the full potential of each animal. By being flexible, family-centered, and educational, the kennel center will reduce the number of animals euthanized each year. The adoption kennel will be open on evenings and weekends to accommodate families who work, and its volunteers can provide assistance in determining what pet is best suited for the family. Potential pets in the adoption kennel will not just be medically evaluated and treated; they will also be behaviorally assessed and taught basic house manners. Classes and training will educate

families about how to care for and train animals. Support and guidance will be available on an on-going basis so families need not surrender an adopted pet. The available pets in the adoption kennel also can help our community become more pet-friendly and compassionate. Animals awaiting adoption will be available for senior citizens in Randolph County Senior Adult Association, who can be transported to the center for socialization with dogs, cats, and our volunteers. Randolph County Hospice patients will also be offered opportunity for comfort and companionship from selected animals. Training Your Pet
Neighborhood Socialization
the quickest & most enjoyable way to achieve the walks you and your companion want and should have
by Angela Craven, Moms 4 Paws
D
ogs are becoming a more integral part of many families, often going everywhere with their human counterparts, making proper socialization more important than ever. Many people encounter unsocialized dogs every day in their own neighborhoods, and the thought of a pleasant walk may be unthinkable. What is a good way to handle this situation? How can you help educate yourself and those in your neighborhood on the correct behavior for a well adjusted dog? Simple, begin a neighborhood socialization program. Before discussing what a neighborhood socialization program would look like, let’s take a look at why you would want to socialize your dog. Dogs that are not socialized enough when they are puppies, and even as they get older, develop negative behaviors that may affect your ability to take them out in public. Dogs that are not socialized begin to fear things, such as people, cars, bikes and other animals. As you can guess, this makes it difficult to include your pet in your life as much as you may want. Fearful dogs may lash out with aggressive behavior, such as growling, barking or even biting. Picture yourself taking a dog like this for a walk when you suddenly encounter your neighbor and his dog. Your unsocialized dog begins to growl, bark, and pull on the leash. What will your reaction be? Will you turn and go home? Or will you force your dog into a fearful
40
situation? Without the proper knowledge you may exacerbate the situation, making the problem worse. Or maybe your dog is in training and reasonably socialized but your neighbor may have an aggressive dog that sets your dog off and makes your walk a living nightmare. So we look towards neighborhood socialization. Neighborhood socialization programs are designed to help all residents learn the best ways to handle walks, greetings, and the timid or aggressive dog. A well run class will help educate the participants, while giving them a safe place to practice meeting their neighbors and their dogs. Classes will also focus on the basics you need to know to ensure sure your dog is in control, while also evaluating those dogs that may need more training to meet their social goals. The best part about a neighborhood socialization program is that all residents will be learning the same information and will know how to handle the different situations that may arise. Thus, when you are out walking and pass your neighbors on the street, you both know how to handle a greeting and what to do if your dog shows negative signs toward the meeting. When everyone has the same knowledge, your walks become enjoyable again. It will allow you to meet or walk with your neighbors and get to know them and their dogs. It is always important to be sure that your dog is well socialized to both people and other animals. When they are not, you run the risk of your dog exhibiting some

form of aggressive behavior. Neighborhood socialization training is the quickest and the most enjoyable way to achieve the walks you and your companion want and should have. If you would like to start a neighborhood socialization program in your neighborhood, please call Moms 4 Paws at 336-210-2318.

She initially stayed with the wife, but the wife is relocating and that, in combination with a new small dog in the home that plagues the big dog, resulted in the decision to surrender Cherish to DRT. At 5 years old, she is a wellDoberman Rescue adjusted and loving family dog who is of the Triad good on leash, riding in the car, comes when called, and not surprisingly loves to sit on the couch and watch TV while eating popcorn (if allowed)! Basically, Cherish is just waiting for someone to take her home and let her be part of a family again. She is up-to-date on shots, microchipped and heartworm negative. Stella weighs 13 lbs. and is crate-trained, leash-trained and house-trained. She is quiet and mild mannered though enjoys the company of other dogs. She would make a great dog for a retired couple. Stella is healthy and God-willing, should have many great Finding Great Homes for Jack Russell Terriers years in front of her. Stella’s adoption fee of $350 covers her spay and dental cleaning costs. An additional charge of $10.99 will register her microchip for life. Contact Robin at 336-414-1373 or Robin@insightrecruiters.com. n

In fact, his favorite place to be is in your lap. He’s quite the velcro cat, and doesn’t mind chatting with you while being held. He’s good with other cats, and with dogs, but would be happy as an only cat if Tailless Cat Rescue he got lots of attention. Quinn has the most stunning blue eyes. Julius is a well-behaved, delightful young guy looking for a place to call home. He is crate-trained, house-trained, polite on leash, and good with considerate kids and dogs his own size. His fascination for really small dogs leads us to believe he may not be a good fit for small dogs or cats. He loves to play with his foster siblings though, so another larger dog would be great. This lovable, smart boy is looking for someone to share lots of walks, car rides and snuggles with. JuGerman Shepherd lius needs a routine to feel safe and secure Rescue & Adoptions and taking some obedience classes with him to help him with his esteem issues is definitely recommended. Cooper is a great dog. He is a healthy, active 8 year old Golden with a reddish coat. A typical Golden, he loves people, especially the teenager in his foster family, and attention. He learns quickly and walks well on a leash. Cooper Triad Golden Retriever Rescue plays well with other dogs, but doesn’t appear to like cats. He is energetic so would do well with a daily walk/run and/or a nice yard to run around in. He loves to chase tennis balls, but hasn’t learned to give them back yet. He is housebroken and well behaved. Please visit www.tgrr.org for more information. n

Miracles happen every day and in every way to all kinds of people, yet most go unobserved. Those people who do not believe in miracles have actually experienced many such occurrences: they simply lack the presence of mind to realize what is transpiring. The miracles are simply viewed as an eddy in the ebb and flow of time. Living in a multiple dog family does not eliminate the sense of wonder nor the sense of reason that each dog was delivered to our doorstep for a particular purpose. Dogs have an instinct for choosing the right people. But only Heaven knows, and only Heaven has a way of gradually unfolding the drama in which we mortals participate. The fisherwoman heard the car doors slam above her on the bridge that traversed the river in which she was fishing. Intent on making her daily catch, she paid little attention to the noise above her until her dog wading in the waters next to her looked up and growled ominously. The noonday sun silhouetted the bridge railing; the fisherwoman could see the outline of a man with two burlap sacks heaving them over the railing toward the stream below. The sacks plummeted at an alarming speed, each bag twisiting and contorting as something alive fought for escape. The screams gurgled and frothed as their burlap prisons tumbled in the waters of the cold river current. Realizing that whatever these creatures were--they were in trouble--the fisherwoman headed for the bag within her reach and commanded her dog to “fetch” the other bag. After reaching the shore, she slashed with her pocket knife the ropes binding the bags, freeing the unwilling occupants. Out jumped a tan Boxer- Pit Bull mix from the first bag--her nursing nipples almost dragging the ground; her three tan puppies came out of the second bag. The mother dog gathered her pups together; licking them and making sure they were all okay. Her eyes met those of the fisherwoman. The dog jumped up on her--one paw on each of the woman’s shoulders--and licked her profusely about the face. It was the dog’s way of expressing her gratitude for her life and the lives of her puppies. “Why, aren’t you the sweetest thing alive?” the woman exclaimed

artist - Laurie Russell amidst the bath she was getting from the dog’s raspy tongue. “I think I’ll call you Sweetie.” The woman toweled the mother dog and the pups; then everyone piled into the truck for the long ride home. Because of an already overflowing household, the fisherwoman could not keep Sweetie and her pups. She contacted the Animal Rescue and Foster Program to see if anyone could foster the dogs until they could get a permanent home. Sweetie came to live with us because no one wanted an adult dog with “pit bull” in the mix. Her puppies were all adopted out to good homes. At her new home, Sweetie joined the pack--approximately 30 dogs and no cat (at that time) and she fit right in. Many months later Sweetie would repay the kindness shown to her by the fisherwoman, and she would pay it forward to us. The rain that fell that night would not stop. The drops hit the tin roof echoing throughout the house’s interior like the sound of popcorn popping in the microwave. Yet even with the sound of nature’s turmoil outside, I remained sound asleep inside. Unbeknown to us, raccoons had entered our basement wrecking havoc on the downstairs facility and turning the sump pump over on its side, rendering it inoperable. Ever so slowly the basement began to fill with water, inching its way up as each drop seeped in through the aged walls. Our gas water-heater, on a platform in the corner, was surrounded on all sides by the incoming flood. As the rain continued throughout the night, the water level continued to rise--finally extinguishing the pilot light on the heater. Surreptitiously, the fumes bubbled through the water; filled the
entire basement; and rose through the vents to enter the main level of the house. Sweetie, alert to the storm--disliking both the thunder and the lightning-- now smelled a new nemesis. As the gas permeated the bedroom, grogginess and delirium engulfed the bed like a noxious cloud. Sensing the imminent danger, Sweetie started jumping up and down on the bed and barking loudly at the unseen killer. Still I was slow to respond. As the odor of rotten eggs became stronger, I abruptly awakened and realized what was happening. The house had filled with gas from the unlit pilot. We got all of the dogs and ourselves out of the house and onto the covered porch; I called the gas company for assistance. Sweetie had repaid the fisherwoman’s kindness by, in turn, saving us. I believe in miracles in the world, and I believe everyone needs that conviction in their lives. And as proof, at the foot of the bed, Sweetie lies in the bundled woolen blanket, her head cocked listening to the sounds of the night--her fur stiffening at any intrusive sound. Her soft brown eyes twinkling in the glow of the greenish night lights hold a secret that only she and Heaven know, and as you may have guessed, Sweetie isn’t telling!

Mo is an 8-year-old neutered male fawn Pug. He is a BIG Pug, weighing 34 pounds. He’s up-to-date on all shots, and is on heartworm and flea/ tick prevention. He gets along well with kids and with other dogs, has never been around cats. He does consider himself to be somewhat of a “top dog” Pug Rescue of NC – partly because he is so big that he can shove many dogs out of his way! Mo has lived all of his life with the blind Pug, Dean (also on our website). Like Dean, Mo has been cared for lovingly by one family for all his life. Ideally, we’d like someone to provide a Forever Home for BOTH Pugs. Both Mo and Dean are reported to be house-trained, nevertheless, it’s always a good idea to take a new dog out frequently as accidents can happen in a new setting. Dean and Mo are fostered in Roanoke, VA. Adoption fee is waived just asking for a tax deductible donation so Pug Rescue can continue to help more Pugs like them. Please put in your application at www.pugrescuenc.org. n

“Play It Forward” Golf Tournament Fundraiser for
G
uess what time it is??? It’s that wonderful time of year when the animal lovers of the Triad get together and play golf. But the best part of it is, while they are playing on one of the best courses locally, Starmount Forest Country Club, the money they have contributed is going to help hundreds of animals. Unfortunately, these animals are either starving, lost or in need of surgical or medical treatment. The Humane Society of the Piedmont is hosting its 2nd Annual “Play It Forward” Golf Tournament on Thursday, September 18, 2014.
The Tournament will be a Captain’s choice round with a shotgun start at 12:30. Registration begins at 11:00am. The tournament has incredible hole-in-one prizes, putting contest, a longest drive opportunity with the 8th ranked distance driver in the US and great raffle prizes at the wrap up reception! Not to mention trophies and gift card prizes for our top three finishing teams. Got something scheduled that day, but still want to make a difference? You can also become a sponsor for the tournament or donate silent auction items. These are all tax deductible and will make a HUGE difference in the lives of countless animals.
Last year’s tournament, while being in its inaugural year, managed to raise over $5000 and contribute to the medical costs for over 200 animals. That money was also able to fund our Fill the Food Bowl program, our Mobile Meals program and helped subsidize the cost of 250 spay/neuters.
The cost to play in the tournament is minimal and includes lunch, beverages throughout the course, a reception afterward and various raffle and silent auction items. Last year, the items included Walt Disney World Park Hopper Passes, autographed items from our local ACC schools, a foursome to play at Pinehurst Country Club, various Nascar items and professional sports autographs. This is an event that you do not want to miss. The animals need your help and we would love to have you come enjoy a wonderful day with us! 46
