Providing compassionate in-home end-of-life care for animals, while maintaining dignity and quality of life. Our services cover every aspect of end-of-life care. Knowing when it’s the ‘right time’ to say goodbye is very difficult for many pet owners. Our quality of life assessments will help you know when it’s the right time to make the kindest decision for your furry friend. Until then, we provide hospice care & medications to make sure they’re comfortable. The end of your pet’s life is a sad but precious time; Lap of Love can make it easier on your pet and your family.

Providing End-of-Life Care with Compassion, Dignity and Love.

A story about a dog named Charlie during his time at the pound. Charlie wonders why he is there and, like any good dog, what he did wrong. Through Charlie’s eyes, we can see how scared a dog feels when it doesn’t have a loving family to take care of it.

Got the Rhythm.

I’ve Got the Rhythm! That’s my racing name, but I didn’t race very long. I just turned two years old in June. I’m still a puppy and love to play. Don’t you just adore my bat ears? Being black, I think my ears give me character. Also, I’m British on my daddy’s side. I’m very friendly and Greyhound Friends of NC could live happily with a cat if you have one. Just call me Rhythm and take me home to live with you forever. I could be your best girl friend as we curl up on the couch to watch movies. For more information, call Blanche Fedor at 336-601-7810, or email greytvolunteer@earthlink.net or visit the Greyhound Friends of North Carolina website, www.greyhoundfriends.com. n

Lucy. Meet Lucy, an 18 month old, female Irish Shorty Jack Russell Terrier who was born on 4-23-12. Lucy is a smart, friendly and terrific, shorty JRT. She is completely housetrained, crate-trained and leashtrained. Lucy enjoys going for walks with our middle Finding Great Homes for Jack Russell Terriers school age volunteers and she is a well-behaved dog inside the house. Lucy is quiet and has a nice, calm demeanor. Since arriving to the rescue, Lucy has been spayed, is up-to-date on all of her shots and is heartworm negative. Lucy’s adoption fee is $300. To give Lucy a great home, contact Robin at 336-414-1373 or Robin@insightrecruiters.com. n

She is a very strong girl who will need a family that has no small children or small dogs. She is a Animal Rescue of Stokes County very loving and loyal dog and will follow you around wherever you go. She is laid back and is not very interested in retrieving balls even though she will chase them! She would love a good couch to climb up on and hang out with the family! Meow Meow & Cici are twin sisters who are quiet and sweet. They’ve had a hard life in a trailer park where they had to race up to tree tops or hide under cars to escape dogs, cats and mean-spirited people. These petite, shiny little bookends are easy to get along with and Purrfect Friends Cat Rescue & Adoption enjoy a lap in which to purr and “make biscuits.” It would be great to see them adopted together. Cover Story

Here’s to the

Underdogs (and Undercats!)

W

hen you come to adopt from the Humane Society of Alamance County, you may notice a greater number of black cats and dogs. We have decided to write an article on why we have so many of these specific animals. We feel that black cats and dogs are the most in need of our rescue and protection. This is due to society’s perception of these wonderful, and often misunderstood, animals. Many people do not want black cats because they believe they will bring bad luck. Historically, black cats were revered as LUCKY. Black cats being seen as good omens date back at least as far as Ancient Egypt; both rich and poor Egyptian families believed that owning a black cat would bring prosperity and good favor upon them by their goddess Bast. In the 17th century, Charles I of England loved his black cat so much that she had a 24 hour guardian! Today in Scotland, an unknown black cat on a porch is believed to bring prosperity. In Italy, a sneezing black cat is good luck. In parts of Europe, if a black cat crosses your path, you are considered to have good fortune, and if a black cat walks into your home, you are truly on the road to great success. 12

By Caitlin Daly

Unfortunately, in 1232, Pope Gregory IX believed that all cats were evil. Black cats were especially hard hit, being associates of the dark side in the minds of many. Later, in the New World, puritans believed that black cats were in cahoots with witches. Those caught with black cats faced severe punishment, even death. It’s hard to isolate exactly why black cats figure so prominently in supernatural folklore, but it’s safe to assume that after many centuries of being depicted as evil Above, Shadow is a playful three month old female. She loves other animals and all people! Below, Clyde is a 12 week old Pit Bull Terrier looking for his forever home. He is great with children and he loves to play!

December 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

incarnate, the black cat superstition is not going away anytime soon. Any black cat owner can tell you, it’s just not true! The same seems to be true for black dogs, however, for different reasons. Many shelter pets rely on websites such as Petfinder.com and magazines (similar to Triad Happy Tails) to find homes. Unfortunately for black dogs, their facial features are often lost in photos and, therefore, they are easily passed over. Another common reason why black dogs are passed over is because they appear generic. When walking through the shelter, people seem to be looking for that face that “pops”, that face they cannot live without. Black dogs, as mentioned before, have less prominent facial features. This makes them less noticed at shelters, resulting in longer stays. Now to anyone who owns a black cat or dog, this goes without saying- color has nothing to do with a pet’s personality! The next time you want to adopt, take the time to meet each dog and cat and try not to pass anyone over. After adoption, it is important to take ownership for your pet and treat and care for them properly. No matter which pet you call your best friend, take the time to socialize and train them through positive reinforcement. Expose them to a variety of

environments and treat them with respect. Of course, above all, foster a relationship of love and trust between you and your canine or feline companion. These are keys to success with any pet. Black cats and dogs make wonderful pets. Please do not think a breed or color constitutes what makes a good pet and what does not. All animals are unique and possess different personalities. The easiest way to know what animal is best for your family is to remain open and spend time with different available pets and see which animal your family connects best with. You never know who will steal your heart. Right, Cherry is a very friendly and loyal Pit Bull Terrier/Boston Terrier with bat ears! She is about two years old and LOVES other dogs! She prefers to snuggle in bed with her head on a pillow. Below left, Bonnie, is a four month old Heeler mix with a sweet personality. She is so smart, too! Below Middle, Coltrane, a five month old Pit Bull Terrier who happens to be deaf. He is very in tune to everything around him and he loves other animals and children. Below Right, Luna is a six month old tabby with a wild side! She loves to play and take naps in sunny spots!

All photos are courtesy of Steph Skardal Photography. Featured here are just a few of the wonderful animals at the Humane Society of Alamance County. For more information on any of these animals or to inquire about our other available pets, please call 336-438-2023 or you can visit us online at www.hsaconline.org.

He needs a home with a fenced-in yard because he is very active and loves to run and play. He would do best in a home with a larger Pug Rescue of NC dog and does not like to share his food. Diarrhea in Cats, Needs Early Treatment

Q A

I just adopted a new kitten. He was doing fine but now he has diarrhea. What could be wrong? There are several reasons for kittens to develop diarrhea. One of the most common is intestinal parasites. It is important to have a stool sample checked by a veterinarian so that the type of intestinal parasites present can be diagnosed. Based on the results, the kitten can be given appropriate deworming medication. It is important to have the deworming medication dispensed by your veterinarian as certain over-the-counter dewormers are ineffective and may end up harming your cat. Even if the stool sample check is negative for the eggs of intestinal parasites, it is highly recommended that kittens receive deworming medication for at least two or more doses. Stool sample checks can be negative if the intestinal parasites aren’t shedding their eggs. Another reason that kittens will develop diarrhea, is if they are being overfed. Because kittens grow rapidly, they tend to have very healthy appetites and will eat voraciously if allowed to do so. This large intake of food places a lot of stress on the intestinal tract, which then tries to compensate by contracting more frequently to move food through the intestines more quickly. This can then lead to diarrhea. This problem can be easily solved by decreasing the amount of food being fed and feeding appropriate amounts for the kitten’s age. Your veterinarian can help you decide what is best for your kitten. In some cases diarrhea can also be caused by an overgrowth of the abnormal bacteria in the intestinal tract. Again, based on a stool sample exam by your veterinarian, this problem can be resolved by prescribing some oral antibiotics and/or a probiotic supplement. Probiotics help return the intestinal bacterial population to its normal state.

Q A

My cat is five years old and has been indoors all his life. He now has diarrhea. What could cause this?

If your cat has been indoors all his life, the likelihood of intestinal parasites as the reason for the diarrhea is low. However, a stool sample should always be checked just to be safe. Depending on whether there are any other clinical signs besides the diarrhea, one of the most common reasons for the diarrhea would be a dietary change. Any dietary changes should be done gradually to give the cat a chance to adjust to the new diet. If the diarrhea persists, the cat should be placed back on its old diet. Certain diets, while high-quality diets, may have fat contents that are too high or other ingredients which do not agree with your cat, resulting in diarrhea. Another reason for the diarrhea is stress. It is common for certain cats to develop diarrhea after stressful events in their lives. Cats can develop diarrhea after being boarded, after a move or even if a certain family member has moved away. Again, it is important to have your cat examined by a veterinarian so that all medical reasons for the diarrhea can be ruled out and appropriate treatments started.

Q A

My 14 year-old cat has had diarrhea for the past two months. What can I do?

The causes of diarrhea in older cats are varied and numerous. Among the more common reasons are an elevated thyroid hormone level and/or inflammatory bowel disease. As it is impossible to distinguish between the causes for the diarrhea, it is necessary to have your cat examined by a veterinarian. Your veterinarian will run several tests to help identify and isolate the cause for your cat’s diarrhea. Once a diagnosis is made, the appropriate treatment can be started. Several points need to be stressed. Diarrhea in cats is not normal and the longer the diarrhea persists, the more difficult it is to treat. It is also highly dangerous to administer Pepto-Bismol® to cats to treat the diarrhea. Pepto-Bismol® contains salicylic acid, an ingredient in aspirin, and is toxic to cats. As with all things related to your cat’s health, please contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice anything abnormal so that your cat can be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

Tuxedos are popular among cat lovers. A website describes the tuxedo cat as sweet and affectionate and more likely to sit in your lap than a typical cat. More laid back than average, tuxedos are more likely to communicate with their voices. This type dates back to the ancient Egyptians, who depicted them on the walls of tombs. Are you up for fun with Fritzie? She is up-to-date on vaccinations, has been spayed and microchipped.

were a painting, she would be a watercolor. On her silky white canvas, silver brush strokes blend to gray and then charcoal. Faint pinstripes give texture and depth. At 5 months old, Bobbi already is quite expressive. She tells us that she likes to “knead the dough” with her paws. As for her politics, we’re not sure; she might be a DemoCAT. Or she might be a RePURRblican. You decide. Bobbi has had all of her vaccinations, and has been spayed and microchipped.

Contrary to the superstition that black cats bring bad luck, Boo prefers to think of himself as a good-luck kitty. And there is evidence for Boo’s belief. In Great Britain, tokens in the form of black cats often are given to brides for good luck. People in Scotland believe that a stray black cat will bring prosperity. ready to go. She is wearing the finest of suits, a tuxedo, acquired from Mother Nature Clothiers. While not a specific breed, tuxedos are a favorite among people who prefer a more formally dressed feline. At 5 months old, Brandi will chase a toy so fast she slides, like a dancer on a ballroom floor. Her goal in life is to be the next famous tuxedo cat in the White House, succeeding Chelsea Clinton’s famous kitty, Socks. She certainly is dressed for the part. Brandi is up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed and microchipped.

Stash. An introvert at heart, Stash is a bit on the shy side. He wants to get to know you before he makes a commitment. You can trust him with your secrets – he won’t tell a soul. And if you are patient and love him for long enough, you may earn this fine feline’s trust. This kitty is called a tuxedo, and Stash’s costume includes white boots. Tradition tells us that William Shakespeare owned a tuxedo cat, as did Beethoven and Sir Isaac Newton. Stash is current on vaccinations, has been neutered, and has a microchip. Sage.

If you come to visit Sage at PetSmart in Greensboro, you will find a husky and handsome boy who has matured beyond the frisky kitten stage. This long-haired tuxedo is about 3 years old, so he has experienced a bit of life. He knows what he’s looking for in a new home. Sage would prefer a home where people respect his boundaries. He would rather not be picked up and placed on your lap. Instead, Sage likes to follow his people around, much like a dog would. He really loves his scratching post and you can see that he’s fond of his plush leopard-spotted bed. Sage is up-to-date on vaccinations, has a microchip, and has been neutered. Training Your Pet

Chill Out! Teaching Your Dog to Relax by Jan Wilson, Dog-Gone Fun

D

oes your dog never seem to slow down? Does he have just as much energy at 9 PM as he did at 9 AM? Is he chewing on furniture, climbing on counters, pacing and barking at people or animals out the window? You thought he would calm down with age, but you are still waiting! Some dogs don’t know how to settle. They can’t relax mentally or physically. Your dog may need your help to LEARN how to be calm and settle. Without help, many high energy dogs end up in the backyard chewing lawn furniture and digging holes. Worse yet, they are surrendered to shelters. It takes time, patience and lots of structure, but your dog can learn to relax and exhibit calm behavior. There are 3 key components to assist a dog to settle- exercise, training and management tools. Exercise. There is no substitute for exercise. Physical and mental exercise are equally important. A bored dog will find activities to amuse himself and chances are it won’t be what you want him to learn. The amount of exercise needed will vary, depending on the age and breed of your dog. An adult toy breed might only need a brisk walk with some obedience mixed in for him to be content to settle, while a young working breed such as a Border Collie will need more exercise and stimulation. Some examples of physical exercise are off leash play, retrieving, tug of war, or playing with other dogs. Leash walking can relieve some physical energy depending on the size of your dog. The length and intensity of a walk will depend on the breed of your dog. Many active dogs originated from working dogs and were bred to be active all day. A walk around the block will not fill their needs. Leash walking is also a mentally stimulating activity because a dog can explore different smells and environments. Other examples

40

of mental exercise are scent games such as K 9 Nose Work, Hide and Seek or puzzles designed for dogs. Training and teaching your dog new tricks is an awesome mental activity. Training. Training is essential for active dogs who have trouble with impulse control. The goal is to channel the dogs’ energy into activities that reinforce self-control, especially indoors. Think indoor manners and outdoor play, our expectations are different for each. We want our dogs to be calmer indoors. Training exercises which reward waiting at doors, waiting for food and sitting to be petted will reinforce calm behavior. Settling exercises are also helpful and teaching your dog a down-stay is a great start. A wonderful exercise to learn is ‘Go to Mat’. Dogs are taught to go to a familiar mat and relax on it in many different locations. Contact a reputable trainer for help with these exercises. Management. When you can’t directly supervise your dog, you want to make sure he stays out of trouble and does not practice his impulsive destructive behaviors. Confining your dog when you are away will assure he will not be destructive and assure his safety. Give him a safe chew or a stuffed Kong to keep him occupied and relaxed. When you are at home and your house is quiet, a tether is a great option. Secure your dog to a solid object within the room or to yourself. Give him a small radius of space, keeping him within eyesight. In that space put a bed and a favorite chew toy. If your dog likes to jump or chew on you, tether him a small distance away from you to prevent the behavior. This allows you to relax and know your dog is not destructive in another room, continually pacing or bugging you! It is a forced calm time. At first your dog might protest, but remember persistence is important to the success of this technique. Wait until he

December 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

is calm and do not give in. A tired, exercised dog will increase your success. Both you and your dog will look forward to this quiet time. Some other important factors to keep in mind are: 1) You must have the cooperation of everyone in the household. If other housemates are inhibiting the hard work that you do, your efforts could be wasted. 2) Your dog’s diet may be a factor in his behavior. Make sure your dog is fed a good high quality dog food with the proper amount of protein and other ingredients. It should be free of dyes and fillers. Your dog may never be a couch potato, but he can certainly learn self-control and enjoy lying quietly on his bed in the evening. Visualize the holiday season, the tree is lit, the fire is crackling and the dog is lying quietly on his bed. Have a safe and happy holiday!

Holiday Story

THE SECRET SHARER

I

http://ruff-art.com ©

by James Colasanti Jr.

can remember that certain special dog who came into my life -- the dog I grew up with -the dog who was with me from morning to night -- the one dog I shared everything with -- that was my dog, Butchy, my secret sharer. She and I had both turned 15 that year, 1964. We had grown up together -- me as a baby and Butchy, a small female puppy given to my parents as a gift to keep me company. It was the weekend before Christmas and the winter season had settled in early in upstate New York. The Adirondack Mountains were heavily capped with snow and the crisp cold air titillated our senses. “Snowshoes, get the snowshoes,” my father yelled to me from the garage. Every other weekend my father, James Sr., and I (and sometimes my mother, Mary, and sometimes Butchy) would travel the 30 miles of back roads in the countryside to visit our cabin in the mountains. While there, we would also visit and bring groceries to the old hermit who lived nearby. He was respectfully known to us as Old Joe. Butchy hopped up on her back legs knowing that a road trip was forthcoming. Old Joe Carron lived in a big 2-story dilapidated old house about 2 miles down from our cabin on Carron Road -- a gravelly drive that had been named after his family. He was about 70 years old (having always looked “old” to me), a hermit, very spry for his age, resembling a thinned-down Santa Claus complete with long white hair and a long white beard. He had an ancient brimmed hat he kept on his head both indoors and out, asleep or not.

42

In the wintertime, we would trek from the main road as all side roads were blocked with snow and were impassable. Through the mountainous drifts we took turns pulling a small sled loaded with groceries. At our cabin we would rest, warming up before pushing on to Old Joe’s place. The easiest route from our cabin to Joe’s was to cut across the 2 acre cow pasture separating the parcels of land. It was an additional 30 minutes to an hour depending on the depth of the snow and the size of the drifts. We never hurried. It took as long as it took and we arrived whenever we got there. On this particular trip a fiercely blowing blizzard sweeping down from the Great Lakes enveloped us with cold icy winds everywhere we walked. Frigid flakes flew against our faces, stinging our eyes, making visibility that much more difficult. However, we knew we had to continue as we did not know when we would again be able to make the trip. Butchy loved the winter. Her agile gait kept her from breaking through the crusty snow. And she would always lead the way, walking ahead and guiding us to our final destination.

December 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

Upon our arrival at Old Joe’s we would go into his “living room” -- an all-purpose area with a larger than normal wooden rocking chair covered with a real black bear-skin fur throw and a potbelly stove that was kept stoked to the max. This was his only source of heat during the cold winter months. There was no insulation and the windows were boarded up over the cracked glass panes. Joe’s only other heat source and his only other “company” were the two dozen or so feral cats that shared his residence. They would wait until he was fast asleep and then curl up next to him on the big chair forming a mass of multicolored fur. Each would keep each other warm. The cats were wild to us but they listened to Old Joe and would come to him especially when they heard the clinking milk pail pouring out a big bowl of warm cow’s milk fresh from one of the dairy cows. In addition to his three Holsteins, Old Joe had goats, pigs, chickens, and four work horses. He also had an old cart on wagon wheels and a sleigh on iron runners to which he could hitch the horses. He would then drive us back to our car when we were done visiting, both summer and winter. While we were warming up, Butchy went to the door and barked. “What’s up, girl?” I asked. She turned and looked back at me and barked again. My father turned to me and said, “Maybe she needs to go out. Open the door, and if she needs to go, she will.” I wrestled the old door open and Butchy bolted. It was her way of getting her way. She knew she could out run any of us but we always knew she would come back.

In a second she was gone -- the blowing snow masking everything within inches of the door. Visibility was nonexistent. I waited knowing full well that she would return and within minutes she was back with a small gray ball of fur in her muzzle. She brought the ball to the stove and dropped it. “Me-yew, me-yew,” the ball began squealing. It was a tiny, allgray female kitten. Evidently, she had been trapped outside by the storm and Butchy had heard her cries. “Can I keep her, can I?” Even at 15, I knew my father was a softie when it came to animals needing a home. “James, she’s so little,” he said. “That’s okay,” I replied. “I’ll take care of her, and Butchy needs a sidekick. I’m going to call her Shadow.” When we left for the car that day, Old Joe placed the kitten in an old canvas sack. On the trip back, Butchy held the kitten-carrier bag strings in her mouth and held her head up high as the sleigh glided through the snow with ease. The sleigh bells jingled merrily as we made our way back to the car. It would be the last Christmas together for me and my best friend, Butchy. We had shared a lot over the years and the memories of that dog and that friendship would remain with me forever. But for now, all eyes sparkled in anticipation on that Christmas Eve night -- especially the two pairs of eyes that nestled quietly, Shadow and Butchy -- keeping each other warm curled up together beneath the glowing Christmas tree. www.cobbanimalclinic.com Angelica was chained as a very young pup. She seems to have been passed along from one home to another where each family, having wanted her, could not keep her for one reason or another (none of which had anything to do with her, just their circumstances.) Her last home was probably her best, and her owner taught her several commands. If she’s outside with no leash or fence but is told to “go to the house,” she goes and waits at the Doberman Rescue door. She sits on command and comes when of the Triad called. She also had her own chair in the last house, and she totally loves to cuddle into the big fluffy bed at Elijah’s House. She is a sweet, gentle and obedient girl who is hoping for someone to love her and never let her go.

ANIMAL

Enrichment

W

hat enriches your life? As humans, our lives are often enhanced by hobbies or passions such as music, art, sports, crafts or literature. These diversions help improve our physical and mental wellbeing on a daily basis. Just like us, our friends in the animal kingdom require some form of entertainment each day to maintain their quality of life. At the Greensboro Science Center, zookeepers strive to provide enrichment opportunities for each animal, from fish to tigers, to help ensure their health and happiness. Keepers have carefully crafted activities designed to enhance animals’ lives by providing objects that encourage them to increase their natural behavior, such as digging, foraging and problem solving. Enrichment devices are objects that can be manipulated by the animal. In the Center’s Animal Discovery Zoo, visitors often have the opportunity to watch the animals explore these objects. Often, natural materials such as browse, large and small branches, wood, wool, hay or flowers are used to stimulate animals’ senses. In addition, man-made enrichment, such as car wash strips, tires and KONG toys may also be used. In the same way humans might enjoy the December 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails 44

satisfaction of solving a Sudoku puzzle, many animals at the GSC stay sharp by manipulating puzzle boxes to extract a treat. Animal athletes such as tigers often revel in rolling, carrying or tossing around Boomer Balls and meerkats enjoy exploring PVC passageways. Some enrichment objects are reserved for special events. For example, just like at a human’s birthday celebration, some animal parties include piñatas that may be covered with an interesting scent or filled with treats. By providing materials for the animals to engage their senses the animals remain fit and active. These items give the animals opportunities to mimic natural behavior. Without these enrichment activities, an animal’s mental and physical health could be compromised. That is why the GSC’s goal is to exceed the highest possible standards for enrichment. As the Center’s animal collection continues to grow, the organization seeks to purchase additional enrichment objects that will continue to provide the highest quality of life possible for each animal. Ornaments are currently on sale in the Center’s TriceraShop that will help fund the future of the GSC’s animal enrichment program. For just $5, shoppers can bring home a photo ornament of one of the Center’s beloved animals or an ornament featuring an animal print. All proceeds from the sale of these ornaments will support animal enrichment.

Lilly has clearly overcome a lot. When we rescued her from the shelter, she was a broken down, severely depressed girl. She just didn’t understand why she was dumped off at the shelter. She is now her mom’s shadow and loves to be part of her foster family! She is about 7-8 years old, still spry, Lab Rescue of NC but settled indoors. She had likely never been an indoor dog before coming to LRNC- but once inside, she never wants to be an outdoor dog again! Lilly has also learned how to be a good sibling to her canine siblings and does exceptionally well with kids-- although our kids are very dog savvy and respectful. Lilly is extremely affectionate. She will need some time to adjust to a new home but will do very, very well with just a little patience. Visit www.labrescuenc.org for more information. n
