Hi, my name is Lola, my birthday is Oct. 2010 and sadly I was turned into the shelter on my birthday last year. I would love to cuddle and sit quietly on someone’s lap once again. A whole year at the shelter is way too long for a lovable girl like me. I have a rich dark tabby coat and would complete anyone’s outfit. You know what they say, “No outfit is complete without cat hair!” I have already been spayed and could come home with you in time for Christmas.

Randolph County Animal Shelter Taking Responsibility for Your Actions By Leigh A. Casaus
R
andolph County Animal Shelter (RCAS) is a small county-run shelter located in Randleman, the heart of Randolph County. The staff has high hopes and big plans for the near future. In Randolph County, we have set out to change minds and bring awareness to the community. Randolph County has an overpopulation of cats and dogs and we can’t adopt our way out of this problem.
We need involvement from the whole community, particularly pet owners. The most important step pet owners can take is to spay and neuter their pets. Another important thing is choosing the type pet that works best for their lifestyle and family. Pets should not be chosen on impulse. Instead, prospective pet owners should do some research on the breed or species they are interested in and take the time to get to know the individual animal before they commit to the responsibility of pet ownership. One of the saddest parts of a shelter attendant’s job is seeing animals returned to the shelter. In Randolph County, steps have been taken to reduce impulse adoption. We now have an application process, as well as an adoption contract. Our Scruffy loves to go on walks, especially this time of year. 8

contract is a legal binding agreement that requires all animals be sterilized within 30 days of leaving the shelter or when your vet deems it is safe. Failure to comply could result in seizure of the animal, fines or criminal charges. At RCAS, we encourage folks to take the animals out of their kennels and really get to know them before they agree to adoption. The introduction of social media has brought renewed hope that we can place more animals in loving and secure homes. Social media has also been very useful in returning lost pets to their owners. Due to a dedicated volunteer that maintains our website and Facebook page, perspective adopters can screen pets from the comfort of their home. Owners of lost animals can email pictures and information about their lost pets that can then be posted on our Facebook page and potentially be seen by thousands of people. Our plans for the future include a new shelter with an area for livestock, as well as a treatment room, and more space

for young and special needs animals. We would also like to increase the size of our staff in hopes of spending more time in the community being proactive and bringing awareness to animal related issues. Our ultimate goal is that one day animals will not be treated like disposable property, but instead valued and treasured members of their families. Until that time comes, RCAS will continue to do what can be done, saving animals one adoption at a time.
What we ask of the community is that each person take responsibility for their actions with regards to domestic animals. Have your animals spayed or neutered, keep your animals on your property, report suspected abuse or neglect and speak out against puppy mills and back yard breeders. Together we can make a difference. Remember, adopt, volunteer, or donate. For more information on adoptions, becoming a volunteer or learning about

Jasmine
Gwendolyn. Hi my name is Gwendolyn and I am 5-1/2 months old. My siblings and I were found living under a shed with our mom. The kind people of HSAC took us in. I am living with my sister Cecily in a foster home. I love playing with my sister, toys and food. Especially food. Hey - I’m a growing girl. I’m looking for a forever home without other young kittens (except maybe my sibling Cecily!) or older cats but I just know that my new home is out there waiting for me! For more information call 336-438-2023 or e-mail hsac@netpath.net. n

Please go visit Jasmine at the PetSmart in Burlington! Have questions? Call us at 336-438-2023 or e-mail hsac@netpath.net. n
Hadley is a beautiful little Tux who was rescued as a starving little baby. She’s healthy now, happy, and looking for her forever family. For more information on adopting Hadley call 336-438-2023 or e-mail hsac@netpath.net. n
Mabel
is a great dog, and would love to find her loving forever home. She is around 6 years old. She has a lovely gait, is very sweet, loves to play, and amuses herself very well!! She will play endlessly in a large, fenced yard. She would like to be an only pet, as she has a tendency to want to chase kitties. She is a bit on the small side for her breed, but that makes her a perfect size for an indoor companion! She’s up-to-date on vaccines, spayed, and ready to play with you!!! Call 336-438-2023 and leave a message or email hsac@netpath.net to find out more about Mabel. n

Animal Hospice - Philosophies and End of Life Care
What Does Animal Hospice Mean? Philosophies of hospice and end-of-life care for animals are similar to that of human hospice care. Pet hospice is guided by the premise that our friends will inevitably enter life’s final phases, and once they do, they deserve a care plan focused on providing them with good quality of life for as long as possible. Hospice and palliative care are typically combined in end-of-life care for animals to provide a supportive, compassionate environment in which a family may achieve some mental or spiritual preparation for the death of their lovely little friend. Hospice care is about appropriate medical care, end-of-life support, and access to a caring community of professionals who are well equipped to respond to individual needs, human or animal, as they arise.
What Type of Services are Offered? More specifically, palliative care is a kind of medical treatment that does not focus on curing disease. It focuses on maintaining comfort with doctor prescribed medications and or treatments to help patients achieve the best quality of life possible while they are with us. For example, incurable conditions that cause symptoms like nausea or vomiting are untreatable. However, nausea and vomiting are very treatable symptoms and most pets respond well to anti-nausea/vomiting medications; nausea is a terrible feeling and palliative care, by definition, is the attempt to prevent the patient from experiencing this discomfort.
What Do Lap of Love Veterinarians Do? Generally speaking, we provide compassionate in-home end-oflife care for animals. We are dedicated to preserving the human animal bond and every single thing we do comes from respect for the love and joy shared between our clients and their animal companions. Our intention is to maintain dignity and quality of life. Even under the best of circumstances, losing a pet is a sad, difficult experience. End-of-life care veterinarians are trained to make a difficult time a little easier for everyone involved. In-home hospice consultations cover every aspect of end-of-life care, including assessment, discussion and finally creating palliative care plans and beginning palliative treatments. When necessary, we train family members to give treatments in our absence, like subcutaneous fluids and/or injections. We assist owners in Quality
of Life Evaluation based on environmental, clinical, medical and prognostic indications. Navigating a realistic plan for care together is almost always a component. We don’t make decisions for you; rather, we help you make decisions on your own. When we have done all that we know how to do, when pain or suffering cannot be controlled or there is no quality of life for an animal, we will perform euthanasia in your home. Transportation to the crematorium is handled by the attending Lap of Love veterinarian, and depending on your very personal choice for the remains, we will return your pet’s ashes to you or they will be scattered on a tree farm in Rockingham County. Our work doesn’t end there; grief support is available and we have so many helpful resources to share. Sometimes we listen; it’s hard to go through this alone and we empathize.
What Don’t We Do? Lap of Love doctors don’t do routine veterinary care like rabies shots and heartworm tests, nor do we carry any preventative health care products like flea medicine. In addition, we are unable to perform any diagnostic services like blood work or perform x-rays.
N C Veterinary Practice Act. A significant number of the people that reach out to me for help do so after learning their regular vet will not come to their home to euthanize their pet. Many of them feel angry about this; having been long time loyal clients, hearing that your trusted vet won’t grant you a personal request during these precious last moments feels like a betrayal. This is never the case. What people are surprised to learn is the legislation that governs all practicing veterinarians in our state, The North Carolina Veterinary Practice Act, requires vets to carry a special license to make house calls of any kind. The mobile license is separate from, and in addition to, all of our regular licenses. In order to become licensed as a mobile practitioner, a mobile service (vehicle and all) has to pass detailed inspection by the NCVMB, satisfactorily meet & maintain the specific requirements determined by the state, and must be obtained before a vet can make a single house call in compliance with the law. Vets that work in hospitals rarely carry this extra license when they simply don’t need it and it almost requires a dedicated vehicle. This might be the sole reason your request was declined; you have not been abandoned in your hour of need, so please know that you and your pet are cared about and your loyalty is appreciated by your trusted veterinarian.

Hi, I’m Oliver. I’m a very sweet, very handsome fella. I love other cats and I’m a love bug with my humans once I get to know them and feel comfortable. They say I’m a Siamese mix, and I look like a Siamese with my orange “points” and blue eyes. I’m ready for my forever home. Oliver was born in the spring of 2012. is a gorgeous long-haired orange and white spayed female kitty. She was surrendered to AARF by her family when they moved and could not take her with them. She gets along well with other cats and is very social. Please call AARF at 768-7387 if you’re interested in adopting Punkin. n
Jazzy.
My name is Ritz and I am an absolutely beautiful long hair orange kitty with some white. I am extremely laid back and very sweet. I was a stray in a neighborhood where people did not want me. They threw water on me and kicked me to get me to leave their yards. No one would feed me. A nice neighbor rescued me and brought me to AARF so I could find a good home. I am neutered and up-to-date on my shots. Of course, I don’t know when I was born, but they tell me I’m about 2 years old. I love being inside and never want to go outside again. I like to curl up in a comfy lap and sleep.
My name is Jazzy and I am Jake’s sister. I am three and a half months old, am crate trained and on my way to being housebroken. I love to play, play, play! I am very loving and much like my brother. You can meet me at the AARF adoption fair at 311 Harvey Street in Winston Salem from noon until 4 on Saturdays. Due to a home visit being a part of the adoption process we cannot adopt outside a one hour radius of Winston Salem.

kitty? That’s me. Just give me a sunny spot where I can look out the window and I’m set for the day. I am 8 years old so middle age has set in and I have gained weight. My foster mother makes me eat dry food for indoor cats. That means it’s not the good stuff. Fortunately for her, I am not picky about my food. She lets me have wet food at night. Delicious! Sometimes I can sneak a little more off my sisters’ plates. I’ll miss them when I get a forever family. I’m currently in a foster home, but call Marie at 314-3061, to meet me. I almost always go potty outside, I like to take walks, get along well with other doggie playmates and I LOVE treats! My foster parents told me that some family is going to be really lucky to get me. Protect your dog
Holiday Greetings from Jake and Company. Have a happy, prosperous New Year!
Protect your dog against heartworm, hookworm and roundworm infection. Dogs bitten by mosquitoes carrying heartworm larvae during the fall must stay on heartworm prevention during the winter months. This ensures that these larvae cannot develop into the adult stage that lives in the dog’s heart.

2012, was rescued from a storage unit by an FCAP volunteer along with her “cousin” or brother, Salem, also available for adoption. She is a gorgeous little girl, soft as velvet, with pretty tabby markings shining through her black/smoke color. Kiwi has a wonderful purrsonality and promises to keep you entertained with her antics. If she is in the mood, she may even play fetch with a soft ball or one of her toy mice. While she is a playful and curious kitten, she is also loving and affectionate and will snuggle right up and give kisses.

He has turned into a very loving and playful kitten who loves to run and play with his sister, Kiwi, also available for adoption. Babs.
Clancy.
Adorable Jack Russell, Babs, is super smart, happy and energetic. This girl loves to play with squeaky toys. She is affectionate, loves tummy rubs and enjoys snuggles after a day of fun. She is housetrained. Like most JRs, she needs an experienced owner who enjoys a smart dog. No little kids please. Babs needs to be an only dog.
Gorgeous Clancy’s fur is very soft and he sports one lovely blue eye and one brown one. Sweet Clancy is only 2 years old and a tiny 6 pounds. He is a very shy little boy (but also very treat motivated!) and will need a gentle family to show him how wonderful life can be. He is going to be a fabulous lap dog and will blossom into a true gem of a pup in the right loving home.
Babs’ adoption donation is $150. Please call 393-0000 to give her a loving home. n

Now he feels SO much better & has turned out to be such a very sweet and charming munchkin! He enjoys hanging out with the other little dogs and is a gentle guy. Gator’s adoption donation is $125. Call 393-0000 to give him a loving home. n
Sheila.
Melvin is an absolutely precious boy who loves, loves, loves people and gets along well with other dogs, too. He is a calm natured guy who is sweet, playful and a little silly and he loves tummy rubs, hugs and kisses. Such a snuggle bunny! He walks nicely on the leash. Beautiful Sheila with her incredible pale blue eyes is a very sweet, affectionate, mild mannered girl. We think she is a Husky/ Shepherd mix but she is fairly petite, around 35 lbs. She has a naturally kind and submissive personality and is gentle and friendly to everyone. Sheila is good on the leash and gets along with other dogs. She’s only 2-3 years old.
is a delightful, affectionate, energetic 9 month old Beagle mix puppy. She’s about 26 lbs. Evee is great with both people and dogs and she bonds very easily to new people. She LOVES children. Calla Lily, or Callie for short is a very sweet kitten. She does not seem to mind the other animals. Calla Lily is doing well but will need to gain some weight and get plenty of good food. She is adjusting quite nicely and quickly to her foster family. Callie will come for treats and loves to play and snuggle up with the other cats in her foster home. If you are interested in adopting Calla Lily, please visit our website, www.reddogfarm.com. n
Gus is a 6
Baylee is a very sweet loving little girl. The only time she barks is when someone is knocking at the door. She walks nicely on a leash and loves to go for car rides. She is timid around new people but she is getting better with that. However, Baylee loves to be with her people and tends to be more confident with them around. She is house and crate trained. She would be okay with older kids around 10 and above. If you are looking for someone to keep you warm this winter, Baylee is your girl. If you are interested in adopting Baylee, please visit our website, www.reddogfarm.com. n
Cori,
month old neutered male pot-bellied pig who was recently surrendered to us. He is the sweetest, most tame pig imaginable. He loves carrots and belly rubs. We recommend Mazuri Mini Pig feed for all pot-bellied pigs. We have seen a huge influx of pot-bellied pigs lately because so many people buy them thinking they are indoor pets and then give them up when they get “too big.” Pigs are farm animals and need secure fencing and room to run and play.
along with 4 other goats and a sheep, came to Red Dog Farm when his owners could no longer care for them. Cori is 6 years old and very social. He will make an excellent addition to your current herd or you can adopt him and a few of his friends!

Venus came to us as referrals
Rafiki
from animal control from a situation of horrible neglect. She has very nice ground manners for a filly of her age and will be a great horse for someone willing to train her once she gains weight and is old enough for training. Venus is doing great in her foster home and is growing up so fast! She was a lanky filly when she came to us and is now a beautiful young mare. Her foster home is beginning to do ground work with her and introduce her slowly to being saddled. She absolutely loves humans and will be a willing partner for someone willing to train her under saddle. What a doll!
was surrendered to us when his owner could no longer keep him. He is a very sweet rabbit who loves to hop around and be petted. He likes to sit on your shoulder and watch TV. He enjoys snacking on his fresh veggies like carrots and kale and loves to play with sticks and chew toys. He would make a good pet for any home.

Mama
Calisto is a
is a very sweet girl who was abandoned in an evicted house. She has been at the SPCA now for over a year. Mama is such a sweet and mellow cat. She is very affectionate and would love to cuddle up close to wherever you are. Mama is pretty disinterested in other animals. She would prefer to not have to compete for space or attention or live with other older animals who are also independent and calm. Mama is a wonderful animal, we all have grown incredibly attached to her but she has never adapted to life at the adoption center and has pulled much of her hair out, literally, due to stress and anxiety. We think its about time Mama finds her special spot in a new and permanent home.
beautiful and very sweet, young, calico kitten. She is about 4 months old, and loves being around other cats. She is frequenty caught being groomed while snuggling up to older residents at the Center. Calisto is super excited to meet people that come to visit and is ready for someone to take her home. She is especially stoked to go to a home with a buddy that she can hang with, which is really her favorite thing. You will just melt when you meet Calisto, come by the center to see what we mean.

Thomas
Violet
is a gentle soul. He is a young adult eager to be in a new forever place, preferably with another cat to keep him company. Thomas likes to play sometimes but is more interested in cuddling, and we wouldn’t be surprised if he followed his future special someone around like a puppy. Thomas is tall, sleek, and has eyes that will take your breathe away. He would prefer a home with another cat, could probably do well with dogs as well. He is easy going, very friendly, and very social. We fell in love with him the first day he came to us, and we think you will too. This total gem is ready to roam, come meet him!
came to the SPCA as a puppy, was adopted and returned, and then adopted and returned again. Both times had to do with circumstances relating to the adopters and are no way a reflection on her amiable disposition. Violet gets along well with other dogs, has gone through basic obedience, and is very playful, and friendly. She would make a great companion to another animal and would be the perfect family pet. Violet is almost full grown and medium in size. She really wants the next place to last her lifetime and we hope to help her find that.

Zazu
Levy
was picked up as a stray but it seemed evident that he had been taken care of in the past. He has always been fairly well mannered, and incredibly friendly. Zazu gets along well with other dogs, is medium in size, and is between one and two years in age. Zazu knows most of his basic commands and is looking for his forever buddy. Zazu is still young and needs moderate excercise. He is also incredibly smart and eager to learn, but more then anything, this special dude just wants to be around people.
is about a year old. We were able to save her from euthanasia, and are so happy we did. Levy is beautiful, young, and spunky and very responsive when you ask for her attention. She is a working breed so she is incredibly bright and eager to please. Levy gets along well with other dogs, seems fairly indifferent to cats, and loves kids. She needs some structure and guidance but we think she will thrive in just about any environment. Come visit Levy to see if she could be the perfect addition to your family.

Presh.
With her ice blue eyes this nine year old will certainly light your Christmas tree. Presh decided to get spayed because picking out presents for little ones would just take too much time out of Presh’s day of snuggling and cuddling. Mrs. Claus is envious of her or rather her “bowl full of jelly wobble” that has captured Santa’s attention. We hear that he has secretly started sending fan mail to the shelter! Presh decided to get declawed because of the rising costs of manicures during the holidays and all the social gatherings. Please meet Presh today at the shelter and you’ll be glad you did! n

Mr. T.
This “tom cat” definitely changed from a pauper to a prince after one night in the shelter. Mr. T still is not used to wearing a tie, but lucky for him it was just for this photographic opportunity. This handsome cat truly enjoys the company of others and a scratch behind the ear is worth more than any Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas ham. We would love for you to stop by the Rockingham County Animal Shelter and spend some time with our special friend, Mr. T. n
Scrappy
in those glowing eyes of Lydia’s. She has graced the animal shelter with her gaze since September, looking for her new home and hoping to find one before the holidays. She would love a family who would share the left over goodies after all the holiday parties. Lydia is a ravishing, medium-haired tortoiseshell, and at two years old, she doesn’t look a day over 10 months. She would love for you to come visit her today and get to know her a little better. Lydia is spayed and ready to go home and add a little more warmth to your home.
has watched one too many Rudolph films. Scrappy is determined to play all the reindeer games he can and one day when he is a big pup he is going to try out for Santa’s team! He has even asked some of the employees how he can be a giant balloon walker in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade to put on his resume. He wants anything to impress the big guy in red. This 8 month old Beagle pup has energy, spunk and dreams BIG. He would certainly keep your family entertained for years to come.

Carolina Basset Hound Rescue I love, love, love playing with my foster mom’s dogs, and I’ve learned how to be a good girl and do all my pottying outside. I would love a family with some young 2-leggers to help me burn off some of my young-girl energy! I might need a little work on my leash manners, but I catch on quickly. I think the best Christmas present would be a forever home. Is that you? Blossom,
4 years old, came to us from a shelter where she had been found as a stray. Apparantly, she’d been used for breeding stock, then dumped alongside a road as her breeding value had diminished. To compound the trauma of being abandoned, she was plagued by three aggressive mammary growths. Thanks to Doberman Rescue the miracle of veterinary medicine, shortly of the Triad after intake she underwent surgery for removal of the growths and is tumor free. (The tumors were non-cancerous.) Blossom is an intelligent, happy, eager girl, who is most grateful for the improvements in her circumstances. Training Your Pet
Intelligent Play Brain Games for Forrest Gumps to Albert Einsteins
by Linda Hofmann, Owner of Mt. Tabor Boarding and Grooming
A
ll dogs, as well as humans, need a certain amount of activity in their lives. It is important to provide a balance between physical and mental activities. Walking is a great physical activity, but mental stimulation is just as important. Providing toys that encourage mental stimulation allows your dog to use his head and figure things out himself. This “intelligent play” is good for confidence building, accepting new challenges, and creates new pathways for learning commands and tricks. Intelligent toys are fun, creative, and easy to play with indoors or out. They provide mental challenges in a positive and educational manner. These toys are designed for the dog to work with problem solving in different ways by finding hidden treats, lifting or pushing blocks and/or turning discs. Mental stimulation channels a dog’s energy into an acceptable outlet. Not giving your dog this outlet sets them up for developing bad behavior; such as, chewing, increased hyperactivity, and shorter attention spans. This time also strengthens your relationship with shared positive contact. There are several ways to provide mental stimulation for your dog. Such as, taking them on a walk in new surroundings, attending obedience classes, teaching new tricks and providing toys specifically designed for mental stimulation or intelligent play.
Intelligent play toys benefit a wide range of categories PUPPIES- Puppies are like sponges absorbing every new experience they have. Start them at ten weeks with simple easy puzzles. Keep play session limited and under ten minutes. This type of play allows pups to be easier to train because they are building confidence in learning new things. ADULT DOGS- These games stimulate their natural movements and instincts in hunting for food. They’re designed for problem solving in different ways.
SENIOR DOGS or POST SURGICAL DOGS- When physical activities decrease due to age or temporary conditions, these games can provide a much needed energy outlet in a positive way by keeping their minds active. BLIND OR SIGHT IMPAIRED- A dog’s sense of smell becomes heightened when sight fails. Smell is the driving force of these games and these dogs will eagerly respond to the challenge. RESCUE DOGS- Changing environments and conditions will increase stress in rescue pets. Using these toys can encourage confidence building and bonding with their new family members. Take baby steps in demonstrating how a game is played. Rescues may not show interest at first but keep offering the opportunity to play. As they become more accustomed to their new environment you will most likely see a more relaxed and interested pet. CATS- Some cats that possess high curiosity levels and have treat driven tendencies, can also benefit from these games.
Nina Ottoson Puzzle Toys Nina Ottoson from Sweden has designed and developed several activity games and toys since 1990. She designed several puzzle games with various degrees of difficulty! These games include Dog Brick, Dog Smart, Dog Twister, and Dog Turbo. These toys come in wooden and plastic versions. The wooden puzzles are the originals and hold up to vigorous and higher active breeds. The plastic puzzles are colorful and easily washed and good for droolers. Both are well researched and designed to maximize your dog’s mental stimulation and problem solving skills. There are different levels of difficulty. Some are good for “Forrest Gumps” some for “Albert Einsteins” and some for in betweens. People may wonder if the dog tires of playing the games, but it’s like monopoly. We know how to play the game, but it is still exciting and fun to play! Dogs are also like that. It is important to provide mental activities or intelligent play as well as physical activities for the well being of your four legged family member. It can be rewarding not only providing hours of “brain time”, but enhancing the human and animal bond by spending quality time together. When selecting your pet’s next toy, please consider an intelligent play toy to give them the balance they need.
Patch works at Twister and successfully solving the puzzle. Her pleasure is evident.

Annabelle. Wouldn’t you love to have Annabelle under your Christmas tree this year? Born June 7, Annabelle is a gorgeous tuxedo with a full length tail. Annabelle is one of the bolder kittens, she loves to play and when tired she loves to Tailless Cat Rescue snuggle with people. She is good with other cats and dogs. She is spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations, wormed, microchipped, and FIV/FeLV and heartworm negative. For more information visit www.taillesscatrescue.com or e-mail taillesscatrescue@hotmail.com. n

The Christmas Meatballs by James Colasanti Jr.
I
t was late Saturday afternoon, Christmas Eve, 1949. The melodius strains of the Italian Hour poured out of the old ivory-colored AM radio that sat on top of the antique Kelvinator refrigerator. The radio show’s words and music, featuring Perry Como singing “O Holy Night” in Italian, flowed loudly throughout the house. My mother, Mary, hummed along as she prepared her signature dish of Sicilian-style Country meatballs. Because she was hearing impaired, the radio was always loud enough to be heard anywhere in the house. For Christmas, holidays, or very special occasions, her mouthwatering baseball-size meatballs were stuffed with a circular-center of mozzarella and provolone cheeses and Italian herbs. When you bit into the gooey center, the cheese and spice mixture oozed out around your tongue engaging your mouth with its warm creamy essences. The smells from the kitchen permeated the atmosphere of the entire house from the basement to the attic giving it a warm holiday feeling. Butchy, my first dog, sat patiently at my mother’s feet hoping for a culinary faux pas. The black, tan, and white Terrier-mix waited diligently eyeing my mother’s hands for any bits of meat or cheese that might accidently fall to the floor for her to whisk away with her tongue. I was seven-months old as was Butchy -- both of us having been born in May of that year. Butchy, a spayed-female dog, had been given as a baby gift to my parents from a friend of the family. It was someone who knew that every boy needed a dog, a companion, to be at his side while growing up. “Okay, brutta fiutosa,” my mother said to the watchful dog. This was my mother’s Sicilian-slang for “big stinker” -- even though Butchy was actually small. “Maybe just one little cheese ball. We don’t want you getting too fat. You have to be able to keep up with James Jr., when he’s crawling around on the floor.” Butchy put her front feet up on the kitchen chair seat and gently snatched the white cheese ball from my mother’s hand. She darted to the corner of the dining room to savor her prize in relative seclusion. She looked up as my father passed by her carrying the six-foot stepladder he had used to put the star up on the top of the Christmas tree. “Well, that’s done,” my father, James Sr., said to my mother. In a corner in the living room the six-foot tall Douglas Fir reigned supreme with an overabundance of Christmas lights, aluminum tinsel, a multitude of glass balls and glass ornaments (some many years old), candy canes, and a big white glowing star on the top. The tree was always placed in the corner and never in front of a window. It was a long-honored family tradition. After they were baked to perfection, my mother placed the glass dish of meatballs on the sideboard in the dining room to cool. Here they would rest and remain out of reach to any and all kitchen traffic until time for the Christmas Eve supper. When she returned to the dining room 30-minutes later, three of the meatballs were missing from the dish. “I think your dog got into my dish of meatballs. Three of them seem to be missing.” Butchy was always my

father’s dog whenever she did anything wrong, just as I was my father’s son when I was in the cradle crying. She was now staring at my father inquisitively. “You didn’t taste one, did you? You know, just to see if they tasted good enough for company.” This was conveyed half in Italian and half in English. And this was their usual method of conversation with one another, regardless of where they were, at home or not. “Okay, so I’ll look around. I’ll see what I can find,” he said trying to lighten her mood. My father went down to the cellar to get the wine for supper. Near the cat’s food dish was a large dark round object. When he got closer, he could see that it was one of the meatballs and that the cat had been taking small bites out of it. But the cat did not go into the main part of the house so he knew that the cat was not the culprit. “Well, Blackie (one of our first all-black cats), looks like Santa Claus has come early and brought you a tasty treat.” From the basement my father could hear me crying in my cradle. Changing diapers was not my father’s favorite chore but he knew my mother was busy in the kitchen so up he went to my bedroom for his parental duty. In my crib, near my little baby feet, was a large dark round object. It was another meatball. Evidently the someone who had taken the meatballs was delivering them as Christmas gifts to all parts of the house. But where was the third one? After my diapering was completed, my father went downstairs to turn on the outside Christmas lights. The trimwork of the house was illuminated by multi-colored bulbs strung up above the windows encircling the front porch. My father came in shaking briskly from the cold night air. He went into the living room to turn on the Christmas tree lights. The over-loaded plug sparked in the socket as it made the connection and the tree glowed brightly lighting up the entire room. “Well I’ll be,” my father exclaimed as he looked down at the manger beneath the tree. There, next to the Baby Jesus, was a large dark round object -- the third meatball. For many years this was one of my father’s favorite Christmas stories... How Butchy had gotten up in a chair next to the sideboard and one-by-one had delivered her meatball Christmas gifts to all of her favorite people -- without taking one for herself. Butchy’s first Christmas began an enduring and an enriching friendship that would last for the next 16 years. And it began by teaching me the true meaning of Christmas while I was still in my cradle. She also made it a Christmas to remember for my whole family for years to come. About the Author. . . James has twice received the Maxwell Medallion given by the Dog Writers Association of America.
