Vet’s Corner

Robert N. Oglesby, DVM Stokesdale Veterinary Hospital Dr. Oglesby is a 1984 graduate of the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine and the owner of Stokesdale Veterinary Hospital. He has been practicing in the Northwest corner of Guilford County for 30 years. Dr. Oglesby is shown here with his wife, Janette.

OBESITY IN DOGS

T

he second most common canine health problem, behind dental disease, has to be obesity. Obesity leads to a number of other health problems: • Decreased life span, as much as two years • Loss of energy •L ameness, particularly tendinitis, cruciate ligament disease, hip arthritis • Back problems like disc ruptures and spinal arthritis • Skin diseases, skin fold infections with yeast and staph • Cancer, increase in number and severity of fatty tumors. Though simple obesity is easy to prevent in the young dog, it can be difficult to address in the older dog who can be quite persistent about the amount of food he or she thinks they ought to have. It is not the weight of your dog in pounds that should be your first concern but the dog’s physical condition. Is Fido thin, obese, or just right? This is the question that needs answering. Obesity is easy to recognize by using the ribs as a “fat scale”. In the healthy dog the ribs should not be visible, but easily felt. Long haired dogs are difficult to visualize, but just by feeling you should be able to get a feel of the amount of fat on your pet. There should be just enough fat cover so that if the pet loses just a little weight the edges of the ribs become visible. Note that healthy working and hunting dogs often have so little fat that the ribs are easily seen in the last few ribs. In these cases the dog’s alert behavior, glossy coat, and well defined musculature indicate a healthy animal. Along with the proper amount of rib covering, healthy pet dogs will have a “waist” behind the ribs when viewed from both above the dog and from the side. There are some diseases that can lead to obesity and in these cases proper dietary management alone will not result in proper condition. Fairly common (a little less than 1% of all dogs) in middle age to older dogs is a problem where the thyroid does not release enough

hormones to stimulate the cells’ proper metabolism. Often, a clue to this problem is recurring skin infections. Another problem that is occasionally encountered in dogs is where the adrenal glands are hyperactive, promoting obesity. The clue to this problem is excessive drinking and urinating and/or a thin hair coat. Lastly, when used over time, some medications promote obesity. This includes steroids, like prednisone, and barbituates used to prevent seizures in epileptics. If you find your pet’s ribs and waist are only a memory and the above health problems are ruled out, you should make concrete steps to correct the problem so that your pet can have a long and healthy life with you. Start by carefully considering all sources of calories in your pet’s diet. Besides the amount of dog food eaten, consider the treats you give, any food your pet may steal from other pet’s food bowls, and the trips to neighbors’ houses. All need to be critically evaluated for their caloric impact and adjusted with a goal of losing about 1.5% of body weight a week. If your pet is currently fed ad-lib, that is his food bowl has food in it most of the time, you should adjust his feedings down to two meals a day. The meals should be small enough for him to clean up in a short period of time, say 30 minutes to an hour, and then the bowl should be put up. Once you calculate the amount of food being fed, a rule of thumb for weight loss is to reduce the amount by about 10% and then reweigh in three or four weeks to see if you are reaching your goal. If not, you can further reduce the amount 10% at a time and repeat. If you find your dog seems to remain hungry but is not losing weight, there are weight control foods available at the store that may help with controlling appetite. You can continue to give treats to your pet at the same frequency, but high calorie treats should be replaced with low calorie treats and offered only in small amounts. Your pet is more aware of the treat than he is the size of the gift, so keep it small. If you replace ham with low calorie dog treats you may find refusal at first, but with persistence they learn. If you have trouble saying no at the dinner table you should crate your pup away from the table while you eat. There, he can have his dinner the same time you do. Extraneous sources of food need to be removed. Speak with your neighbors. Put the cat food up where the dogs can’t reach. Be creative but watchful. Don’t forget exercise can help too. Daily walks, games of fetch, or just increased time out in the yard can all help with weight loss. Most of us could use a little bit more of this too, so there is a double benefit. If, after taking all the common sense precautions you find you are not making progress, it is time to get your veterinarian involved. Most offices have accurate scales, computer programs and weight control foods that when used together can help with the most difficult obesity problem.

I am a beautiful boy with luxuriously soft hair and I am a Humane Society of Davie County real lover! Cover Story

Early one chilly winter’s morning, Lucky and I heard plaintive cries coming from a tiny ball of fluff high in a tree!

Sir RichardS

ir Richard is my first cat rescue. He was perched in a tree years ago at the Fourth of July Park in Kernersville. Lucky, my dog, and I would go there and run EVERYDAY at 6:00 AM. We heard meowing, I shined my flashlight up the tree to be greeted with a precious terrified kit cat. He would not come down, I left him food everyday morning and evening. He gobbled the food after we left. Finally, the third day I brought my carrier to the park and told “her” I was going for my run and I would come back and, “TAKE YOU HOME”. He apparently understood, when we returned from our run I called ‘Her” and right down the tree “she” came. I picked “her” up and said “Today you are going home”. “she” relaxed in my arms and sighed. It began to snow, how wonderful to rescue. Now let me explain why I said “She and Her”. The whole time up the tree I kept saying “what a pretty little Girl”. When I dropped “her” off at the vet that same morning on my way to work, the Vet’s office called me and said “Congratulations Peggy, you are the

14

owner of a beautiful little BOY”. I knew right then I would have to give HIM a Regal name.

Sir Richard thinks he is a dog. He barks at the birds outside and the squirrel taunts him.

Regal Looks, Gentle Soul by Peggy McLeod

Therefore, Sir Richard. He thinks he is a dog. He barks at the birds outside when the squirrel taunts him and is a loyal companion. He is a Momma’s boy. In fact when he can’t see me he goes through the house and calls “MOMMA MOMMA”. He gets upset when I’m in the shower, the paw comes in and then I hear him saying “Momma”. He is so afraid of me being in the shower by myself and getting wet. He comes in too. He is my nurse, when I’m sick he comes in the bathroom and pats my leg and says so sweetly “Momma”. Letting me know I’m not alone, he’s there with me. He is always there for me. I’m so very Blessed. You know, I may not have much money, and go from month to month in a panic. But I AM the richest woman in the world because of my fur kids. Photo at left by Peggy McLeod Top photo is courtesy of Laurie Merritt Photography http://llmerritt.wordpress.com

ANIMAL RESCUE & FOSTER PROGRAM 336.574.9600 / www.arfpnc.com Born in mid August 2014, Karina has been anxiously awaiting her FOREVER home. Karina loves long romps around the house with her favorite toy, followed by a snuggly cat nap. Karina is FeLuk-negative, up-to-date on shots and purrdy purrfect. Do you have room in your home for a bundle of cuteness? Karina is a great kitten to consider for your familly.

hoping for love and snuggles. Along came a mouse toy and off Miss Emily scampered to chase the toy for days. Born on August 15, 2014, Emily has dreams of a forever home where she can play and cuddle til her heart is content. Emily is up-to-date on her shots, feluk-negative, and ready for her adoption dreams to come true. Are you interested in adopting this love? Emily sure hopes so.

Keeta

The term “big brother” really fits Carrick’s description, since he towers a bit over some of the younger kittens. Carrick’s big boy paws match his lion like voice. He has a resume in at a popular, local radio station, for the position of substitute DJ. They are in need of a vociferous, talkative “up and comer”, and Carrick just fits the bill! Carrick loves to play with balled up newspaper. Can you believe that this gentle little giant is also a cuddler, and loves to rest on his foster mom’s shoulder? He will be your BFF forever! Won’t you please come to see him at the Next Step Adoption Center?

was born on July 18, 2014 and is from a large litter of Border Collie mix puppies. Adventurous from the very beginning she is always willing to be the first in trying new things. Keeta is spayed and has the cutest freckles on her nose. She is a sweet girl that deserves a great family. Keeta would love an active family and a fenced backyard would be an added bonus. Keeta has personality plus and is extremely loving.

Aaron.

Who wouldn’t love a Frannie in their life? Frannie and her sister Charlie were abandoned with a college student when their owner left town. Unfortunately for Frannie she had a broken leg that no one had sought medical help for. Seven weeks in a cast and Frannie never even knew she had a broken leg! Go Frannie! Frannie has been spayed and is a delight to have around. She is a hearty girl that can, and will, play with the best of them. Frannie was born around January 1st, 2014. She is great in her crate and loves everyone!

Born midAugust, Aaron is the son of a 35 lb. Shepherd mix so he should be a nice medium size dog when he is full grown. Aaron is almost potty-trained and is completely cratetrained. He has learned how to go out the doggie door in his foster home. Aaron is a snuggler and overall is a low key pup. He is not vocal, however, he does have some Shepherd-like tendencies. Aaron is very social and never meets a stranger. Think he might fit into your family?

Dental Do’s & Don’ts for the Holidays –

Q A

What should and should NOT be in your pet’s stocking this year!

When picking out a toy or treat to give my pets, what is safe for them to chew on? As a veterinarian dentist, I get asked this question a lot. We all want to include our furry family in everything we do. So it’s probably no surprise to you that according to the APPA (American Pet Products Association), at least half of all dog and cat owners will purchase gifts for their pets this holiday season! But are we really giving them a gift, or are we unintentionally causing them possible harm? As a pet owner, we often don’t think about our pet’s teeth when purchasing them a new toy. We are looking more at entertainment value, if it’s cute, and quite possibly asking ourselves how long it will actually last before the dog tears it up. The reality is that there are a lot of pet toys out there that really are harmful to your pet’s teeth. One of the most overlooked damaging items is a tennis ball. The texture of the tennis ball (or toys covered in comparable rough fabric) can actually wear down the enamel of the teeth, especially when the ball is wet or dirty. For this reason we don’t recommend any toys covered in this felt-like fabric; instead, give your pet a soft and flexible rubber ball. Another toy often purchased for dogs are rope toys. Rope toys and similar items are often used to play tug-of-war. This ‘game’ is not only bad for multiple behavior problems but the action can cause mouth trauma and broken teeth! Instead play with your dog by using educational toys to make your dog work for treats. There are tons of great educational toys on the market, but you can also get creative with items around the house, such as paper cups and hiding a treat under one cup. When playing with traditional dog toys, teach your dog a command such as “give” or “drop” to release the toy instead of pulling the toy from his mouth. “Give a dog a bone?” Well, in fact, don’t! Certain bones claim to help remove plaque and calculus from teeth, but they can also break

teeth! In reality dog’s teeth were not designed to chew on animal bones, antlers, cow hooves, hard plastic bones, or anything else that is hard and rigid. A dog’s enamel is thinner than a person’s and yet they have 4-10 times the bite force as a human. So, if they bite down on a hard substance with no ‘give’ (or flexibility) to it, the tooth will break. So what can you give a dog to chew on? The answer is tricky. Some dogs are more prone to fracturing teeth than others and even chewing on softer toys might not be recommended. If your dog is a chewer, never leave toys with him unsupervised. If he gets easily destructive or bored, try increasing his exercise first. If you must give him a toy to occupy him, then consider purchasing a thicker rubber toy (we like the Kong® Senior Dog Toy) that has an opening to insert treats. You can even fill the toy with your dog’s kibble or non-fat plain yogurt and stick it in the freezer for 20 - 30 minutes to make it more solid. Hard frozen items are not recommended. Instead of buying bones and hard treats for your pet, try purchasing a can of food (preferably the same brand and type of food they are already used to eating), then roll the canned food out on a cookie sheet and bake at a low temperature (around 300 degrees for ~ 30 minutes). Once the canned food is slightly crispy, remove from the oven and use a pizza cutter to cut it into small strips. Store in refrigerator until ready to give your dog a treat. So have fun spoiling your pet this holiday season, all the while protecting their teeth! Think of other things you may be able to give them or other pet lovers in your life, such as the gift of pet insurance, donating to a rescue, or sponsoring a homeless pet on their behalf. Or simply spending extra time with your beloved furry family, because in reality that is all they want this year anyway!

However, she wouldn’t mind being your one true love either.

Bobbi is distrustful of new people at first since people were not always nice to her in her former living situation. Once she trusts you, she is devoted, loving and playful. Bobbi only has two top teeth so requires a diet containing a high percentage of canned food. She is about 6 years old, spayed, litter-trained and current on shots. Visit www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process or leave a message at 336-768-7387. n

Rose

is a beautiful girl who absolutely loves to purr! She is bold and adventurous, and is not afraid of anything. She loves to follow her foster mom around the house. Rose and her litter mates were rescued from animal control when they were three weeks old. For any questions about this cat, please contact AARF or visit www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption process. n

Sweet Josie

and her litter mates were found in a box in Miller Park. Josie is the biggest of the bunch and a self-confessed food hog. She climbs in the middle of a plate of food to make sure she gets all she wants!! Full of personality (as well as food), she is a beautiful black and white tuxedo and has unusual white ear tufts. The kittens were born around August 1, 2014.

Sally.

Eric Clapton’s hit “Lay Down Sally” was actually written about a dog! Who knew! And our friend Sally would make the perfect nighttime companion that will listen to all stories and never leave your side. Except for an occasional water and potty break of course. Looking to own part of history and a Billboard Top 100? Then hurry up and visit our friend Sally, but please ask for Animal ID: A301053. Photo courtesy of Maria West, Zozo Photography. n

Photo courtesy of Maria West, Zozo Photography. n

Princess & Bandit. 11 year-old Princess loves sitting on a warm lap watching the glowing moon light up the beach, and her brother Bandit (4 years old) enjoys capturing radiant sunsets in pastels. Posie & Tiger. Although Posey did not come to the shelter with a pocket full of anything, she and her brother Tiger did pass the “Do you mind getting accessorized” test with flying colors! Oscar.

You can typically find Oscar dealing a winning hand of poker and making his award winning guacamole for game night! Adorable and perfect in size, Oscar is fast to get out of the kennel but slows down at the turns. He perfectly sits and waits for a treat after he effortlessly sniffs out which hand it’s in. Peanut butter, freezedried liver, chicken… his palate doesn’t mind. Don’t wait, act fast and ask for Animal ID: A299142. Photo courtesy of Steph Skardal Photography. n

ogs have long been recognized as Man’s best friend. And cats are actually found in more households in the United States than dogs. But, numbers are unimportant, our pets are treasured companions. Dogs and cats along with a wide variety of pocket pets, birds and reptiles all can enrich our lives. Pets give us so much and we want to give them the best we can during and after their time spent with us. When our pets have departed from our lives, many pet owners opt for cremation, which offers the opportunity to take the remains of their pet when they relocate. Also, many of the pet family members live in apartments, condos,

town homes or neighborhoods where there are ordinances forbidding burials. Don McGee at Family Pet Cremation Center knows about serving families during a time of loss. Don, along with his wife, Drew Wilkerson McGee and Brother-in-Law, Ted Hopkins are a part of Wilkerson Funeral Home, a fourth generation business serving Reidsville, North Carolina and surrounding areas for 106 years. After serving as a funeral director for over 16 years, Don believed it was time to open Family Pet Cremation Center in Greensboro. His desire was to provide families with trusted end-of-life care for their pets. Knowing that your pet will be cared for by people who understand

Family Pet Cremation will pick up your pet from the veterinarian’s office or your home. Their newly remodeled office offers comfortable surroundings in which to discuss any plans you wish to make. They also offer a large variety of urns and keepsakes. The office is conveniently located on Lindsay Street off East Wendover Avenue and Bessemer Avenue. 38

just how much you love them can make all the difference in the hours and days of heartache after the loss of a pet. “We saw there was a need in our area for a pet cremation service that offered dignified care that’s both compassionate and affordable.” explained Don. The most important thing for most people is knowing that their pet will be treated with respect by people who care. We have four dogs and two cats ourselves. Most of our animals have been rescues and we love them like they’re our kids. Family Pet Cremation Center was established in late 2010 and works with over 20 veterinary practices all around the Triad. Also, if your pet dies at home, they can be contacted directly.

Happy Holidays

Don, along with his wife, Drew Wilkerson McGee, Sister-In-Law, April Hopkins and Brother-in-Law, Ted Hopkins are a part of Wilkerson Funeral Home, a fourth generation business serving Reidsville, North Carolina and surrounding areas for 106 years. Rocky, the chihuahua, is the unofficial office manager and is available to greet visitors. He is always ready to give a “high five” and bring a smile to your face. The office has a comfortable sitting area should you decide to stop by and discuss any plans. Some people find a pre-planning meeting can be very useful and relieve some of the stress when you are facing the loss of your beloved pet. Family Pet Cremation Center offers a wide variety of urns and keepsakes for your pet and their standard “Signature” urn is a beautiful hardwood box. Matthew Jones, a crematory technician, has extensive experience working with animals at a local veterinary practice. He gets an ink paw print for every pet before the cremation. This print is given to the family with the cremation certificate. Upon request, Don can take this unique paw print and using a process that he created, laser engrave it directly on the urn as a lasting tribute to your faithful companion. Losing a pet can be a traumatic experience and not everyone understands your depth of feelings. Trust your beloved pet to the people who understand your loss and will help you through this difficult time.

Training Your Pet

Your New

PUPPY by Brad Howell, Red Beard Dog Training

C

hristmas is just around the corner. Unfortunately, this can also mean unexpected puppy present season. Hopefully, if you find yourself with a puppy for a Christmas gift, it won’t be a surprise, but rather a previously discussed, wellplanned addition to the family. Regardless of how you acquire your new pup, training is of paramount importance. Anyone who has raised a puppy knows it can be maddening — the housebreaking, the destruction, the teething, the whining, etc. Despite all the headaches a young dog causes, the issues are easy to resolve with the right tools and consistent approach. No matter how annoying a puppy’s behavior is, the time it takes to change it is minimal, simply because it has not been long enough for the bad habits to be ingrained in the dog. On the flip side, good habits are also new and can disappear if not reinforced. Here are a few tips to successfully training your puppy.

Something is better than nothing In my experience, there seems to be two groups of puppy owners— those that do no training at all and those that do the most basic class they can find and then call it quits. Often times, adult dogs display issues they may have never had with simple puppy training and socialization. Owners will say they hoped they would “grow out” of problems or an older dog would show them the ropes. This is not a feasible route to take if you want a wellbehaved, calm dog. Many puppy owners enroll their dog into a group class to learn basic obedience skills and get a chance to socialize with other dogs. Socialization is arguably the most important aspect of raising a puppy. For that reason alone, training in a classroom or group setting is easily worth the $100-200 investment. In addition to the socialization, your dog will start to learn some basic obedience commands with the help of many tasty treats!

Work smarter, not harder Teaching puppies (or any dog) in a one-on-one setting where the environment is controlled gives the dog a much better chance at succeeding. When you are at school, you take your exams in a nice quiet classroom, not in the gym during PE. Group classes for pups can be like taking the SAT in the middle of a hectic gym class. As the puppy learns, distractions are added as needed. But even in a one-on-one setting we must do our work wisely. For example, if you are trying to teach your pup to walk politely on a loose leash, limit your work so you will stay focused as well. Instead of a mile walk where the rules are only enforced for the first 10 minutes, go for a trip around the block and focus on walking correctly the entire time. Another underused resource is the Internet and YouTube. There are thousands of dog training videos online. Some are great, some are garbage and plenty more fall somewhere in-between. Browse around long enough though and you will find something that helps you with your pup for absolutely free. Puppies are a challenging endeavor, but if we maximize our effort in this chapter of the dog’s life, the rest of the book is a much more enjoyable read.

Give the pup a chance So your dog has graduated from it’s 6-class package and is a perfect angel now, right? Perhaps, but it’s not likely. You and your pup are on the right track, but you have to continue working to instill these new desirable habits. All-positive treat training is an excellent way to get started, but there are challenges to applying what they have learned in a real-life setting. Puppies are easily distracted. They may learn to momentarily sit or shake for a treat, but playing, with the dog working 10 feet away at class, may be more interesting than the treat after a couple of reps. In the real world, you aren’t likely to have treats all the time and the distractions do not go away. We must be prepared to work through Photos courtesy of Anthony D.Thomas Photography these situations—here’s how…

Stories to Inspire

Miracles DO HAPPEN By Roxann Davis

D

ivine intervention brought Lady into my life. I arrived to work early one morning at the Rockingham County Animal Shelter and was concerned to see Animal Control before their shift usually began. I looked in the cage and saw the most beautiful angel, I knew for sure she would be reclaimed soon. The officers informed me that a woman called earlier after seeing a truck run over the dog near Landfill Road and he never stopped. They called her “Landfill Lassie”. It was a miracle she was alive! I told her everything would be just fine and I would help her. Shelties are known in the animal profession to have an attitude but she was sweet and co-operative and even gave a kiss! From that demeanor, the name “Lady” suited her perfectly. We have a 72 hour holding period for animals to be reclaimed before we can contact rescues, but this dog needed urgent care. I contacted several Sheltie rescues that were ready to take her immediately, until they found out about her injuries. So I decided this angel needed to come home with me until I could take her to my personal veterinarian. X-rays revealed my worst fears, a shattered pelvis and broken left leg. The vet offered to euthanize…option two? But Lady never gave up fighting so I prepared myself for a big financial decision that would, hopefully, help her win the battle. Surgery was then scheduled with a specialist in Kernersville. Knowing this would guarantee her a great home, I was in denial she was mine! The surgery was successful in repairing her hip and pelvis but she still was not able to walk. For months she would “scoot” to be wherever my other five dogs were or to be in the same room as my mother and me. Even though her legs didn’t work, Lady didn’t stop herding the others and quickly became alpha dog! Although she appeared very happy, I started questioning my decision because that was not the quality of life she deserved, but neither was the alternative. Lady had to perform exercises several times a day to stimulate her muscles and nerves. We used blankets to wrap around her stomach and she would take a few steps, then sit.

December 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

I figured it was time to get her the aid of a wheelchair. While researching online I found an article about dogs that had suffered similar traumas and were helped by therapy centers. The closest one was more than an hour away, in Winston-Salem. Lady and I would wake up at 5 a.m., twice a week, to make the journey together. Lady really enjoyed the trips, often watching all the cars and receiving a few beeps from big rigs and waves from children. I would drop her off and hurry back to the shelter to work until 5 p.m., then rush back to Winston to pick her up. They tried hydrotherapy, acupuncture and electrolysis over the two months span and she didn’t seem to respond to anything. One day the technician confided in me that Lady only seemed to want to walk for me. She was most likely a breeder dog and that was why it was hard for her to connect with people, but somehow the two of us had connected. I talked to my mother and we decided it may be emotional therapy that Lady truly needed. So my mom made sure to give her a little special attention while I was at work. It seemed to help! One night, January of 2012, I forgot my house keys. Lady heard me call out from outside. Mom said Lady barked and jumped to her feet and walked to the door. In amazement, we praised her and were so proud of her. She was pretty excited. All the dogs came up, tails wagging, as if to congratulate Lady. Lady can now walk, go up and down stairs, run and she loves to pounce in snow. She has had such an impact on so many people. The woman that made the call to animal control later visited Lady after her surgery. Animal control even fell for her. My bosses normally would have told me there was no hope, but they saw us interact. She even made friends with doctors and technicians who were in awe of not just her outer beauty, but her spirit as well. Lady’s purpose is to inspire people to never give up and always have hope! The spirit of a dog like Lady is rare, she teaches us that against all odds and physical handicaps, LOVE makes all the difference. She is a reminder to all – miracles do happen! She has been a happy, loving, part of our family ever since that summer morning she entered our lives in 2011.

Christmas Comes Early in Stokes County! Local Dentist and Wife Commit to Ensuring the Shelter Animals of Stokes County Have a Brighter Future

Local businessman, Dr. Mark Johnson and wife Heather, of Mark A. Johnson Family Dentistry in King, N.C. visited the Stokes County Animal Shelter in search of a pet companion. The visit left the Johnsons dismayed at what they saw. Seeking a solution, Dr. Johnson reached out via social media to local animal groups for ways to change the situation at the shelter. He discovered that there are efforts underway to raise the funds to build a new publicly run animal shelter. In 2010, The Friends of the Stokes Shelter, Inc., a non profit organization, started the process of fundraising. In 2012, a new group, the Supporters of the New Stokes shelter, began holding fundraisers almost on a weekly basis. In 2013, the two groups joined together to work on fundraising efforts. To date, total money raised is $75,000. The goal is to reach $400,000. On November 18, 2014, Mark and Heather Johnson made a decision to help make a difference in the lives of these shelter animals. They presented The Friends of Stokes Shelter, Inc. with a check for $15,000 and have pledged to continue to donate the same amount each year for the next five consecutive years! This certainly helps bring the group closer to their goal. There is still a lot of work to reach the goal of $400,000. Please consider helping this small but dedicated group reach their goal. With your tax deductible donation, the shelter animals of Stokes County can have a much brighter future!

Tax deductible donations can be mailed to the Friends of the Stokes Shelter, Inc. at 530 North Main Street, Walnut Cove, N.C. 27052 For more information on this project and how you can help, Contact Candis Loy at 336-414-6013.

Leslie Staples, Treasurer of The Friends of Stokes Shelter, Inc. receives a check for $15,000 from Doctor Mark Johnson and his wife Heather Johnson. The Stokes Shelter is trying to reach their goal of $400,000 to build a new facility and this generous donation is a tremendous help. www.triadhappytails.com December 2014

“Your heart is the center of your life. It is the source from which all of your love flows. Whenever someone is speaking to you, you will never go wrong if you listen with heart. And Son, if you follow your heart, you can make every day Christmas Day for the rest of your life.” our own family tradition. My father had already initiated the ritual by securing the majestic fir in the tree stand. Everyone took turns adorning the tree with ornaments and strings of lights until its needles were barely visible. My mother’s favorite decoration was my first pair of bronzed baby shoes which hung from a branch by their laces. “James,” she said, “those were your very first pair of shoes, and I can remember the day your Aunt Frances (my Godmother) gave them to you.” She continued, “Each and every ornament is a moment of rememberance. Life is measured in moments. And these are a gift from the past hanging here from a branch.” My mother was right, and our tree was loaded with more than most. Our tree symbolized not only the holiday but also, the importance of family and tradition. The lights’ plug sparked as it entered the wall socket completing its connection to the power source and our connection to the heritage embodied in these decorations. The multicolored hues danced merrily across the living room with some boldly venturing into other parts of the house. Butchy sat up and barked in appreciation. She loved Christmas as much as I did. Later, everyone said our ‘goodnights’ and headed to bed. Since the day had been tiring and mass was at 8 a.m., we needed to be up early to dress for church. Every night one of my parents checked on me. They were protective since I was their only child. And they had been older when I arrived: my mother, 39 and my father, 50. Tonight, this display of parental concern fell to my father. After lights out, he crept up the stairs to my bedroom. The hall light softened the blackness of my bedroom and caused Butchy to look up as he entered. He sat down on the edge of my bed. Butchy raised her head from my chest, and my father patted her as he spoke. “James,” he began, “the best gifts I can give you this Christmas are the little lessons I have learned over the years. Many of these came through trial and error, but I know which ones are worthwhile and what will work for you.” “Next year, you’ll turn 16; you’ll be a young man; you’ll learn to drive. But you must never ever forget where you came from.” Here was the wisdom of the ages from a man who barely got past the eighth grade. He was a born philosopher, and he was an animal whisperer in the truest sense. “Living life,” he continued, “is what we all have to do. But some of us do it a heck of a lot better than others.” “The love of a dog is the magic that binds the two of you together. And it only takes one dog to change your life forever.” “You know, James, Butchy is one of the smartest dogs I have ever known. And I know that she loves you very much. When I come into your room at night, she always has her head on your chest. She rests it there because she is listening to your heart. It’s her way of making sure you’re okay. And because she loves you, she also listens to you with her heart when you talk to her.” “Your heart is the center of your life. It is the source from which all

of your love flows. Whenever someone is speaking to you, you will never go wrong if you listen with heart. And Son, if you follow your heart, you can make every day Christmas Day for the rest of your life.” When he had said all he had come to say, he got up and went to the door. In the distance I could hear Saint Patrick’s Church bell chiming for midnight mass. The sliver of light grew smaller as the door closed on that Christmas Eve. It had almost latched, but then, re-opened. My father loved a captive audience. “And one more thing,” he began again, “you never knew your grandfather-- my father--Ignacio.” “I need to share something with you he once told me.” He said to me, “Remember Son, that you were loved by an old man--an old man who loved dogs--who loved dogs more than he loved people. And do you know why he told me this?” I stared at him blankly. “Because he knew that—unlike people—the only time a dog will break your heart—is when it dies.” As the hall light got smaller from the other side I heard my father say, “Merry, Christmas, James.” That was to be Butchy’s last Christmas but even now, fifty years later, I still taste snowflakes. And each and every time, I experience the love and joy that special dog still brings. “Merry Christmas, Butchy.”

NOW after some time, love, medication and the right food, I am doing much better. I am starting to LOVE life! My foster mom says I have blossomed into a sweet and lovable Pug. Please let me come live with you. Please put in your application online at www.pugrescuenc.org, or you can email: pugrescueofnc@gmail.com. n

Lee. Hi, I’m Lee and I’m five years old! My foster parents say I’m a favorite around here. They tell me that I’m a catch. Speaking of catch, would you throw my tennis balls to me? I could fetch for hours. I am house-trained and I like taking several short walks during the day. If you have the time for me, then I have plenty of kisses for you. My parents have really NC Yorkie Rescue enjoyed my stay, but I’m ready to meet my forever family. I may be a bit shy initially, but once I settle in, I am with you forever! I am neutered, up-to-date on shots, microchipped and my adoption fee is a bargain at $325. To adopt one of our rescues, you must first fill out an Adoption Application located on our Home Page at www.NCYorkieRescue.net under the “Online Forms” tab. n

TJ.

Meet TJ, a four year old, 14 lb., male Jack Russell / Chihuahua mix. TJ was found as a stray at a rural animal shelter and his owner never came forward to claim him. TJ is a very friendly, happy dog who has never met a stranger. He loves to Finding Great Homes ride in the car and he adores for Jack Russell Terriers children as well as other dogs. TJ has been neutered, is up-to-date on all shots and microchipped. He is crate/leash-trained and house-trained. TJ is a great dog who deserves a loving home of his own where he will be given a clean dog bed to sleep in and food on a regular basis. TJ’s adoption fee is $250. To give TJ a great home, contact Robin at 336-414-1373 or Robin@insightrecruiters.com. n

Zena

will soon be four years old and in her short Pit Bull life she has already been through so much! She was rescued by the Animal Rescue & Foster Program (ARFP) ready to give birth any day. Once her puppies were weaned Zena went to live in a home for 11 months until that home decided they couldn’t keep her due to their demanding job. Now she is back in ARFP and looking for a forever home. Zena is the perfect dog. She is loving, quiet, gentle, and a HUGE lap dog. Zena weighs 34 lbs and is absolutely a delight to be with. She is definitely the last one up every morning and can be quite the couch potato! Call the Animal Rescue & Foster Program at 336-574-9600 to meet Zena. n

Greensboro Science Center

Creatures’ Christmas Celebrations By Jessica Hoffman-Balder and Erica Brown

‘Tis the season

for celebrating and the Greensboro Science Center animals are no exception. This year, many of our animals are participating in time-honored traditions from their native regions. We’d like to share with you a few of those stories as well as a few wishes they have for the holidays. For Digi, the Wallaby, native to Australia, Christmas means sunshine and surf. This year, he wrote (with a little help) a letter to Santa asking for a new surfboard and a plane ticket to celebrate Christmas down under with a picnic on the beach. Digi plans to stay up late watching for Santa’s sleigh pulled by “six white boomers.” You see, in Australia, the heat is too much for Santa’s reindeer, so he takes to the sky on kangaroos instead! In South Africa, a favored tradition is caroling by candlelight. The SciQuarium’s penguins rehearse all year to perfect their calls for a Christmas Day performance. This time of year, visitors can sometimes hear these rehearsals, which, to an untrained ear, may sound something like grating donkey brays. The maned wolves in Animal Discovery Zoo miss the beautiful fresh flower displays common around Christmas in their homeland of Brazil. Their holiday wish is for anything but a white Christmas! They wish for warmer weather to return soon and bring back our beautiful blooms. Please be quiet around our chinchilla, Link, if you visit just after Christmas. Native to Peru, Link will celebrate the season with lavish parties that last ‘til morning. If he’s lucky enough to get a new pair of dancing shoes, he can salsa all night long! Visitors may notice the ring-tailed lemurs behaving themselves

this time of year. If they make the nice list, they may find some delicious lychee fruit, a favorite Christmas treat in Madagascar, in their stocking. Dunkle and Yodle, our Oberhasli Goats, celebrate the season Swedish style! They anticipate a traditional Swedish Christmas meal of beetroot salad, lefse, and lutfisk, a dried white-fish traditionally soaked for a week in lye water, then steamed. Mmmm-mmmm! For dessert these dairy goats are asking Santa for some good Swedish chocolates! Tai, our red panda, has a very simple Christmas wish, a nice juicy apple. This is a common gift in his home country of China. Tai definitely loves apples and eats them regularly, but with his sweet tooth, he never thinks he has enough… Whether you’re celebrating the season with carols, extravagant parties or a Swedish buffet, we hope you include time for a visit to the Greensboro Science Center. Our staff - and animals - would love to be part of the magical memories you create with your loved ones this holiday season!
