2016 Vol. 7, No. 6

Seven has had a hard life so far and is ready to make 2017 his lucky year! His foster mom named him Seven because he was rescued from the shelter on the seventh. Not much is known about Seven other than he was rescued from the streets with an injured eye. The vet estimates him to be around a year old. He has already had two surgeries to try and save this eye. We require a secure fenced in yard for him to use for his potty time and play time. He needs someone who is committed and has the time to spend with him. We Pug Rescue of NC want this to be his forever home and a safe place for him to grow up, not to be bounced around anymore. His foster mom says his eye seems to be healing up nicely. It does not appear to bother him in the least. He is a very happy boy, but still very busy and acts like a puppy. Praying for continued progress and healing. We will not know until his follow up if he has any vision. He should be ready for his forever home by December.

Training Your Pet

Therapy Dog Teams

A

therapy dog is a pet that visits different venues with his owner as a team and interacts with people who need comfort and animal companionship. I get many phone calls from dog owners asking for information about how to become involved in the community as a therapy dog/owner team. Karen Gibson, a therapy team evaluator for Pet Partners and an active member of North Carolina Pet Partners of the Triad, and I have put together some basic information and guidelines to help you and your dog become a therapy team. The first question to ask is “Will my dog enjoy this work and does he have the qualities that it takes to be successful?” Therapy dogs must be friendly, confident and genuinely love to interact with people, not only family members but strangers as well. They should be able to stay engaged, friendly and calm even if the person does not have normal movements. The same question can be asked of yourself. Do you enjoy interacting with and helping new people? Will you enjoy the visits as well? Successful therapy teams have an amazing bond built on trust and communication. You must be your dog’s advocate. For your dog to comfortably go into situations that are sometimes emotionally charged, he must trust that you will clearly communicate with him and protect him. It is important to recognize the signs of stress in your dog and know when to end the visit. Obedience training is a must for a successful therapy team. The therapy dog must be reliable and in control at all times while he is on a therapy visit. A solid sit, down, stay, leave it, and walking politely on leash is essential. The dog must not pull, jump up, lick or be overly vocal. A basic guideline for the exercises required is the Canine Good Citizen Test. A therapy dog must be proficient, not only in a test environment but all environments. He also must remain neutral with other dogs and have a comfort level around medical equipment (crutches, wheelchairs, etc.). Each organization will have their own evaluation standards and tests. Handling skills for the human end of the team is also important. You must communicate with your dog in a calm and clear manner in multiple scenarios. Appropriate human-human interactions are important. The largest organizations in our area supporting dog therapy teams are Pet Partners and TDI (Therapy Dog International). Both national organizations offer evaluations for dog therapy teams. Pet Partners requires a handler course prior to being evaluated as a therapy team. Evaluators are experienced members of the organization that visit with their personal dogs. They know what will be expected of the team and can point out potential problems. If the team passes the Team Evaluation and appropriate health screenings, they can register with the organization. This will give them different opportunities to join already existing programs that can benefit from a therapy team. Both organizations offer liability insurance for their registered therapy teams. It is important to note that these organizations do not offer obedience training to prepare for the evaluations. Formal training

8

By Jan Wilson

should come from a reputable trainer and diligent practice and socialization from the handler. A popular and well known activity for therapy dog teams is to visit hospitals, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. This is great, but there are many more opportunities for teams to help out in the community. Teams are needed in schools for reading programs, in colleges for stress relief during exam times and welcome back events. Teams also visit hospice, funeral homes, cancer centers, mental health facilities, detention centers and participate in community outreach programs. Many people get confused between the definition of a therapy dog and a service or assistance dog. Therapy dogs are pets who provide comfort and affection to those who need it. They do not have special access to public places. They can only access facilities that have given them special permission. Service dogs are defined by the American Disabilities Act as dogs that are trained to provide assistance, such as guide dogs and hearing dogs. They are not considered pets, but are working dogs. I have only mentioned two national organizations that provide opportunities and unity for therapy dogs teams. There are other groups that offer therapy dogs opportunities. There are many smaller groups in the area that provide services locally. Pet Partners can be found at petpartners.org and TDI can be found at TDI.org.

PET INSURANCE MYTHS DEBUNKED! The following are actual statements made by local pet owners regarding pet insurance.

Myth #1: All pet insurance carriers are the same. There are currently 16 pet insurance carriers in the United States and all of them differ based upon their quality of service, monthly premiums, reimbursement percentages, deductibles, and payout limits. The best advice would be to take time to research each of the pet insurance carriers and compare them to one another. The most helpful and user friendly web resource that we have found is www.petinsurancereview.com. This website will help you find the right pet insurance for you and your pet through quick and easy comparative sheets and tools.

Myth #2: I do not need pet insurance because I have no problem paying for general pet care. Pet insurance is not designed to cover general and wellness care, which can be budgeted for. It is intended to be used for unexpected pet health issues, such as illnesses or accidents. For example, a pet that was seriously injured after being hit by a car may require extensive medical care, surgery, and days of hospitalization. The total cost of care can be significant (thousands of dollars). Wouldn’t it be easier to make the decision to treat your pet if you knew you would be getting up to 90% of your money back?

Myth #3: My pet is indoors only, so I would never have the need for emergency services or pet insurance.

(i.e. kidney disease, heart disease, cancer), and so on. The medical care required to treat all of these problems and many others would be covered by pet insurance.

Myth #4: My pet is 10 years old. He is too old to qualify for pet insurance. Most pet insurance carriers have plans for senior pets, as long as they are enrolled before 14 years of age. While pet insurance often excludes pre-existing conditions, there are many senior pet health issues that would still be covered by pet insurance.

Myth #5: I have a Great Dane. Because of his breed, he is predisposed to bloat and would not be approved for coverage by pet insurance carriers. Pet insurance companies do not exclude specific breeds from being covered. However, they often exclude coverage for specific conditions that are high risk in certain breeds (i.e. bloat in Great Danes). These specific medical exclusions vary between pet insurance companies. This should not stop you from getting pet insurance for your Great Dane. Since there are so many other health issues that can occur with any pet, their breed or certain excluded conditions should not keep you from getting pet insurance.

Myth #6: I have a Dachshund that had back surgery or a Labrador who had knee surgery, so he would not be eligible for pet insurance. In both of these cases, the problems arose and the surgeries were performed prior to the owner applying for pet insurance. Therefore, these specific problems would be considered pre-existing conditions and would not be covered under any pet insurance policy. However, there are numerous other health issues that would be covered by the pet insurance including: vomiting, diarrhea, allergic reactions, traumatic injuries, heart disease, and kidney disease, just to name a few. Preexisting conditions should not stop you from getting pet insurance.

Myth #7: My cat has had urinary issues before, so he would not be eligible for pet insurance. Like the Dachshund and the Labrador in the previous example, this cat would not be covered for any medical issues relating to his urinary tract problems because they would be considered a pre-existing condition. However, other health issues that he might develop would be covered. Examples of such potential problems include: a corneal scratch; bite wounds; abscesses; vomiting caused by eating a toxic indoor plant; or foreign body surgery. There are many more medical problems that would also be covered by pet insurance. With all veterinarians accepting pet insurance and the realization that up to 90% of your unexpected veterinary bills for your sick or injured pet could be covered, what are you waiting for? By having your pet covered by pet insurance, you will be able to give them the necessary medical care without worrying about the cost. Remember to visit the website www.petinsurancereview.com to compare all the pet insurance carriers. If you are looking for a suggestion, we frequently recommend Trupanion Pet Insurance. Visit www.Trupanion.com for more details or call (855) 591-3103 to take advantage of their free 30-day trial.

The majority of patients seen for illnesses or accidents spend most of their time indoors with their owners. Indoor pets still chew up toys and ingest inappropriate items, get into the trash, receive table scraps, ingest human medications, suffer traumatic injuries, develop systemic disease

Amelia

is one of AARF’s many mother cats. She was brought into AARF with her tiny babies and has been an extraordinary mom. Her kittens are almost weaning age, so it’s time for her to start looking for a permanent home. You won’t regret giving this little girl the love she deserves. Date of birth: 5/1/2015 You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Grayson

is a handsome boy dressed in a gray tuxedo with short socks in front and long socks in back and a cute little white patch above his nose. He is a bit shy but loves to cuddle up next to your face or body. He likes to hide on the chair under the tablecloth, sneaking out to chase a dog or cat. Grayson climbs the cat tree to make the mouse on top squeak and eats pate with gusto. His favorite toy is the circle tray with the moving ball. Date of birth: 8/26/16

If you’re searching for a cuddlier he’s the kitten for you! Meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Visit us online at www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Shelby.

My name is Shelby. You can’t tell from my portraits, but I am a van brown tabby. I have brown tabby markings on my head and tail. The rest of my coat is white! My sister, Willow, and I were found in a woodpile as tiny kittens. Some hunting dogs were trying to get us so a nice man rescued us and brought us in to AARF. I went to what I thought would be a permanent home with a little girl and three small dogs. My little girl became more and more allergic and my family couldn’t keep me so now I’m looking for a new home. Date of birth: 7/23/2012 Meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Visit us online at www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Glo

is a long haired tabby. She was born in December of 2015 so she’s just barely an “adult”. She started out on her own, but knows now how wonderful it is to be in a foster home. She loves regular meals and playing and napping and watching TV. Now she needs a permanent home and people of her very own. Meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Visit us online at www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

OG

Biscuit

is a bouncing baby boy who enjoys running and jumping and climbing almost as much as he loves eating and napping! He was born to a feral mom and is the only surviving kitten from her last litter. Biscuit is in a foster home with other cats, but needs a permanent home. He was born in late August 2016 and is only one of the many kittens that AARF has available for adoption. Meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Visit us online at www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

(aka Orange George) was born in the early summer of 2016. He was found in one of Winston Salem’s parks chatting up a neighborhood cat. He is super sweet, loving, and talkative and looking for a permanent home. Meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Siberian Husky. She was found wandering as a stray emaciated and very sick. We took her in and nursed her back to health. She was heartworm positive and very ill, but has received treatment. Due to her past life she has some resource guarding issues. She is fantastic with her people but is best suited in a home with older children and no other dogs, as she doesn’t like to share her toys. She loves to snuggle, go for long hikes and is house and crate-trained.

Sammy’s Story

W

inter is here and the days grow shorter in so many ways. December 10, 2013 marked the passing of our beloved Sammy. It’s cold in Syracuse, New York, and the snow comes early covering the ground and trees with a chilly white blanket. Not a good place to live outside. Sammy found himself at the SPCA again for the second time. The tender age of one found him back at a shelter with no time left. His previous adoptions had failed and he was literally at the end of the line. My Judy had been volunteering at the rescue, but had not planned on going by that day. On a whim, she stopped in to see if she could help. She walked in and was immediately smitten. Barely three pounds, but with soulful eyes and floppy ears, he was there. She swept him up and brought him home. Fate had intervened and we had a new family member, small in statue but blessed with an extraordinary personality! His emotions were always on display. We all have our ways of expression, but his were in those incredible ears! Those were oversized, always channeling, letting anyone know how he felt. The first few years were trying, as he brought memories of the scars he bore from his previous abuse. It was hard for him to trust again. Being rejected leaves its mark and he struggled so hard to open his huge heart and let someone come in and give him the love he so richly deserved. The seasons passed and with the turning of the world, he began to believe again. His confidence grew and he became quite proud of himself. We saw it every day in his prancing, which became known as his “Happy Walk”. His emotions were freely given, our boy was learning what love really means and we were learning too! One of the most endearing habits Sammy had was to get our attention while we were watching TV. The tiny little feet would tip toe up our chest and gently position himself two inches from our faces, staring directly into our eyes. If this ploy failed to rouse us, he became more creative. Next he would give us “nose kisses” pressing his moist little button nose into our noses as to His ears always betrayed his feelings. Try as he might, he never could will them to stand up straight. Emotions were transmitted through those oversized antennae. The tops of his ears flopped over, giving him a comical appearance. Before long he picked up the nickname “Sugarface” that somehow conveyed that adorable, bedeviling personality.

by Jim Stratton

All he knew of people was hurt and rejection. Judy’s unwavering love allowed Sammy to believe again, and thrive in our home.

say, “Hey, I’m here you know!” Finally if all failed to get some reaction, he pulled out all the stops. Then came the irresistible, “nose nibbles”, where those tiny teeth gentle nibbled on our noses, reducing us to willing victims to his whims. He got his desired result, Pupperonis! Judy and I had become his personal valets, a position we humbly accepted. Sammy had figured out the art of living with the human race. His intelligence with dealing with life had us constantly asking, “Did he just do that?” We have had many dogs, but this one was one in a million. Brilliant was ordinary to Sugarface. Lying on the sand at the beach on a lazy summer day, he would get lost in the moment. His black, shiny nose would be up in the air sniffing and taking in the salty air, floppy ears tuning into the cries of the seagulls. I swear he was loving it as much as we were. That wonderful face expressed a calm joy and contentment, which was his signature way of thanking us for everything. We were constantly thanking him in return for the joy of his essence. The truth is, he made our lives better and we will carry his special spirit in our memories forever. It is our sincere hope that our “Sammy Story” will in some way shed a light on the life changing experience waiting for you at your local animal shelter or rescue group.

Long may you run! www.triadhappytails.com December 2016

Jack,

Callie, ID 2323, is a 4-1/2

ID 2439, a 10 month old Beagle mix, has the best personality and the biggest heart! Though a cat free home is a must, this guy adores other dogs and is amazing with children of all ages! He loves to run and play so he needs an active family. Still a puppy, Jack has a lot to learn but he is very smart and knows how to sit and give you his paw. Jack would do best with a family that will be patient with him. Although he is young, he had a rough start and fears that he will be abandoned again. He is currently in training and learning each day that he will not be left behind. Help Jack become the great dog that he can be by giving him a loving forever home!

year old Pug/Shar Pei mix. She is good with all people and listens to redirection, learning new things quickly. She walks beautifully on leash and is also off leash-trained. She is completely house-trained but does not do well in crates and if left alone, she gets a little anxious. Callie would most certainly benefit from having another canine companion in the house to keep her company or a parent who works from home that will help keep her anxiety at bay. Molly,

Carmela,

ID 1478, is a large beautiful, orange Maine Coon. She really enjoys getting brushed and being petted. She rewards you with the loudest purrs ever. She doesn’t like being picked up. This is common with large breed cats. She enjoys being around people and will follow you around the house. She enjoys the occasional treat of canned food, but prefers her hard food (Purina Indoor Cat Chow). She does well with other cats if introductions are slow. She is a true people pleaser and just wants your time and love.

ID 2429, is a beautiful kitten who loves hearing you speak of her beauty. She is very much a people cat who loves to be petted and receive attention. Her medium length fur is so soft. She is very shy at first and will take a bit to warm up to her people or other cats in the house. She is in a foster home with 3 large dogs but she is not a fan of the canine variety. She may eventually warm up to a small low energy dog, but she would prefer not to share her forever home with one. Her ideal home would be with adults or a family with older teenagers.

He is house-trained and will hold it until you are able to take him for a walk, which is definitely one of his favorite things to do. As of right now, he’s relearning commands like sit, lay down, stay, and heel and he’s coming along quite nicely but sometimes it’s hard to dust off those cobwebs. Christmas Story

two dogs... a special little girl... a Christmas dream come true. THAT DOGGY NOT IN THE WINDOW

S

by James Colasanti Jr.

anta Claus in full regalia shivered in his black boots in the frigid December air. He walked alone along the sidewalk serving Pembroke Road. There was no snow on the ground, but it was still very cold. Santa smiled and waved, “Merry Christmas,” to everyone passing by. He was making his way to a gig at Macy’s Department Store in Friendly Shopping Center. A widower, seventy-eight year old Victor James Willoughby, V.J. to his friends, loved filling in for the real Santa. Each of the last six years, from Black Friday until Christmas Eve, he strove to spread kindness to all, especially the children whose lives he touched each day. He knew the brevity of one’s life could be extended by spreading the feelings of love. And he always did his best to reach this goal. His joie de vivre was contagious, and the twinkle in his eyes always produced a smile from every onlooker. Sometimes Victor just couldn’t get enough of his fans. Walking toward him was eighty-five year old Virginia Alice Smith with her two year old white Labrador retriever mix, Randy. Victor went past Virginia’s house every single day on his way to work. Usually, Randy was in the front living room window guarding the house and watching the traffic. Next to him sat Little Freddie, Virginia’s seven year old brown Rat Terrier mix. They never barked at Victor when he walked by, for they knew that he was a friend. As Victor approached Virginia, Randy sat waiting for the familiar Santa to pet him. He was a glutton for attention. “So how’s it going today, Santa?” “Good morning, Miss Virginia. Always a pleasure to see you. You too, Randy. “I always said to my late wife, Celia, ‘There is just something about a dog that makes the world a better place to be!’ And I know in my heart that it’s true. Celia and I always had at least two dogs, sometimes more. During our forty-three years together, the pitter-patter of paws was always with us. I’ll tell you, I dearly miss her, and I miss having dogs around the house for company.” “They are that, my good friend. So sorry for the rush, but I need to get back home and get Little Freddie on a leash. They like to be walked separately, and it’s about all I can handle. They are two together dogs, but also very separate, but equal, when they are apart. See you soon, Victor.” When Santa arrived at Macy’s, his elfin helper had already checked in. She was straightening the North Pole area of the department store

‘There is just something about a dog that makes the world a better place to be! ’ And I know in my heart that it’s true. getting it ready to open. Tina MacIntyre gave new meaning to the term, elf-in-training. The attractive teacher’s assistant used the part-time job at Macy’s to enable her to buy items for her classroom. She enjoyed working with Victor as Santa’s helper, and she always relished the happy children coming to see him with their Christmas wishes. Her green pointed hat featured a red pom-pom on the end making her stand out in the crowd. And her long elfin ears reached well above the white fur trim bordering her hat. Completing the outfit was a green buttoned-up blazer with an attached skirt and tall, shiny black boots. As the day progressed, each child spoke to the elf first, then went up the fanciful North Pole steps to sit in Santa’s lap. In advance, the elf would whisper in Santa’s ear the details of the next child’s wants. “Hey Santa,” Tina began, “Mary Ellen Martin is coming up next. Her mother, Shelia Martin and I teach together. Mary Ellen is twelve, a bit old, and quite intelligent, but autistic. Her mother told me that her daughter would like a dog for Christmas. They are determined to get her one as a therapy companion. They feel sure a dog would help bring her out of her shell. So please give her some special attention.” Santa nodded in agreement preparing to do his very best. And for Victor, he hoped this would be an easy job. Each day as he walked to work, Victor kept his mind on the task at hand. Later that week, Victor was walking past Virginia’s house when he saw Randy in the front window barking furiously. He peered carefully, but he could not spot Little Freddie anywhere. The curtains obscured his view of the room’s interior. He stood by the glass pane,

but Randy continued barking as if trying to capture his attention. Victor decided to knock. He figured it couldn’t hurt. And that way he would have the reassurance that everything was okay. There was no response. He knocked again. Still no answer. He found a door bell button off to one side and rang. Both dogs barked up a storm, but no one came to the door. Now he was worried, really worried. From his voluminous, but almost empty, Santa’s bag, Victor pulled out his cell phone. He dialed. “9-1-1, what’s your emergency?” “This is V.J. Willoughby, and my location is 3472 Pembroke Road. Can you please send an officer to do a welfare check? My eighty-five year old friend is not answering the door, and her dogs appear to be in distress. Let the officer know I’m wearing my Santa outfit so he or she can locate the house more easily. I’ll be waiting out front.” Officer Joseph P. Davis arrived within minutes. Both the front and back doors were locked. He could clearly hear the dogs--seemingly upset--inside the house. “Sir, I have a lock pick kit in my cruiser. Let me try that first---before we go breaking down any doors. But I will if we have to. Those dogs don’t sound right.” With the skill of a veteran locksmith, the officer had the front door open in a matter of seconds. “There—that wasn’t too difficult,” he said as he made his way into the house. They found Virginia on the floor in her bedroom. Little Freddie was standing guard, never leaving her side, not even when the men entered. He was, after all, her watchdog. Officer Davis contacted the EMTs, and the ambulance arrived shortly. Victor waited outside on the porch. He called Tina at Macy’s and apprised her of the situation. He told her he would be in, but he was definitely going to be late. He had to stay in case his friend needed his assistance or advice. One of the EMTs exited and spoke to Victor. “The lady would like to talk to you before we leave. You’ll need to hurry. We really need to get her to the hospital ASAP.” Virginia was lying in the gurney with Little Freddie sitting on her lap. Her tears flowed as she looked up at Victor and began speaking. “Victor,” she began, “I need you to take care of Randy and Little

Freddie.” She had her hands wrapped tightly around the dog. She sobbed and hugged Little Freddie even harder. “Not just take care of them,” she continued, “I need you to find them a good home.” She did not want to part with Randy and Little Freddie. They were her greatest assets—a bounty of love and devotion transcending monetary value. She knew that the three of them were meant to be together. But she also surmised that she didn’t have that much time left. “They are taking me to an extended care facility and I won’t be able to care for them any longer. I’m so sorry to have to ask you this, but I don’t have anyone else. Will you please do that for me?” “Don’t you worry one bit,” Victor replied, “That’s what friends do. I’ll see to it that they are both taken care of.” Victor knew he would need to call upon his alter ego, Santa, for a solution. The next day Shelia Martin brought her daughter to Macy’s. She had received a call the night before from Santa’s elf, who told her to be at the store with her daughter at exactly 3:00 p.m. When they arrived, Santa directed Mary Ellen to open the big white box. He said that it had been delivered to the store with her name on it. Muffled barking sounds emanated from within the confines of the package. Mary Ellen ripped off the big red bow and pulled off the top. Out jumped Randy with a new red collar and a long red leash. “I guess Christmas came early for you, young lady,” Santa said. “His name is Randy and I hope you’ll both be good friends.” Randy licked the little girl’s face and then laid his head in her lap. Mary Ellen was overjoyed. That Christmas Eve night, Victor sat in front of the fireplace in his well-worn brown leather recliner. Weariness from all of the holiday occurrences, both happy and sad, had taken its toll. He was munching on some brown sugar cinnamon cookies that one of the store employees had brought for him. He looked down at the figure sitting in his lap and spoke. “You know, Little Freddie, today is the best day of my life—that is, until tomorrow gets here!” And with that his new found friend sat up, turned his snout to him, and started licking the cookie crumbs from Santa’s long white beard. “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.”

sweet kitten and is now about 14 weeks old and ready to go to his new and forever home. He likes to chill, hence his name, Mellow! He would do well as a family pet and is good with other cats. There are no dogs in their foster homes but he would adjust to a home

Clyde.

Meet Riker.

This guy came to RDF from the Guilford County Animal Shelter. Riker is a Shepherd mix and is about a year old. This boy is very sweet. He tends to be a bit slower to warm up to men. We’re not sure why because we do not know much about his previous life. Riker is doing much better with that now since his “foster dad” has really worked with him to get him comfortable with him and some of his friends. He really is a great, great dog and will want a home with lots of love.

This sweet boy is a 4 year old chinchilla. Clyde just entered the Red Dog Farm program and has been getting lots of TLC in his foster home. He is blind in his right eye but it doesn’t stop him from being a sweet, outgoing playful boy. He needs a furever home that will spend lots of time including him as one of the family by letting him have lots of outside cage play and cuddle time.

Visit www.reddogfarm.com to adopt this handsome pup! n

If you are interested in adopting Clyde fill out an application online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Izzy.

This beautiful horse came to us from Guilford County Animal Control when she and Layla (not shown) were abandoned by their owners. Izzy is a very sweet girl and is doing great in her foster home. Our volunteers groom her on a regular basis and she is happy to stand quietly. We have saddled and bridled her but Izzy seems rusty in the riding department. We will continue to work with her under saddle. Learn more or apply online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Will

came to RDF when his owners were no longer able to care for him. He is a five year old Lab/Shepherd/hound mix. This guy is cool as a cucumber having a chill nature about him. Will would do best in a home with no cats or farm animals but does do well with other dogs. He is up for a walk, playing outside, or just hanging out on the couch. Will is looking for a new home with lots of love! If you are looking to add a four-legged friend to your family, please fill out an application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Onyx.

Addison

This beautiful kitten is Onyx! He is about 3 months old. He has thick black fluffy hair with touches of white making his hair look like salt and pepper. Onyx was found in his rescuer’s driveway. Unfortunately they could not keep him, so they brought him to the SPCA so that he could get help finding his fur-ever home. Onyx is neutered, microchipped, and is up-to-date on all his age appropriate vaccines. Onyx is a very sweet kitten; very gentle and loves to be petted. Could you give Onyx a second chance and provide him with a home of his very own?

knew that wandering up in the backyard of one of our board members was the ticket to being rescued and finding a new home. He is a domestic long hair about 10 to 12 weeks old. When he was brought in he was a little timid but soon warmed up to all the other kitties in the room. Addison has beautiful markings and very fluffy fur. He likes to purr and rub against anything he can. Addison is still a little scared of being picked up, but we will hopefully change that quickly with all the love and attention he gets from the staff and volunteers. Do you think maybe Addison could be the new companion you have been looking for?

Mustachio

is a handsome long haired kitty with black and white fur. Muchastio is about 8 months old. His momma was a feral in the back yard of his current foster mom’s home for about a year. They had tried to catch her and even trap her, but with no success. However, she did take care of her 4 offspring when they were born. The foster mom sat outside with these babies all summer. Muchastio is the only one that is laid back and easygoing. He is neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccines. Muchastio is now an indoor kitty and will let anyone pet him. He loves to play with all cats too and has no aggression whatsoever. Could Muchastio be the purr-fect addition to your family? Muchastio is currently living in his foster home, so call the SPCA center at 336-375-3222 to arrange to meet this beautiful feline. n

Champ

is a 12-year old male Bassett Hound mix. The SPCA first learned of Champ around 2pm one recent afternoon. A concerned SPCA volunteer called and informed us that Champ was scheduled to be euthanized that same day at 4pm at a local shelter where he had been surrendered by his owner. The SPCA agreed to take Champ in and try to find him a home. Champ is a senior dog, but he still has so much love to give. He loves attention and he is good with other dogs as well. Champ deserves a chance to live out his days in a loving home. Do you have room in your heart and home to give Champ another chance? Call SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 for more information. n

Becca

is a 3-4 month old female Lab mix. When Brenda saw this little one on a recent visit to a local shelter, she knew that she could not leave her behind. Becca was curled up in a small ball on the cold, wet concrete floor, shaking and so pitiful. She was so starved and thin that you could see all her ribs and bones. Upon arrival at the SPCA, a concerned foster mom took Becca home for some much needed TLC. Becca has since made a huge improvement. Becca has all the food she wants and the companionship of her foster mom’s dogs. She has put on weight and is playing and being the puppy that she was meant to be. Becca will be spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccines. Call SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 for more information.

Dino

is a little Terrier mix that will steal your heart. Rescued from a local shelter, he did not come with much information as he was found as a stray. Though already microchipped and spayed, an owner could not be found. Dino is a small energetic dog that needs someone to give him a new home with lots of love. Can you find it in your heart to bring Dino home with you? He will make someone a great little companion! Please call SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 if you would like more information on Dino. n

Meet Abby! This senior gal is estimated to be 8 - 10 years old and would love to live out her golden years in a low key environment. Abby really loves being around other dogs and does get spurts of playfulness in which she will run around. She also has the Stepping Stones Canine Rescue art of “couch potato” down pat. She is a shy girl and would love for a gentle soul to take her in and allow her to learn to trust. Read more about Abby at www.lovethemutt.org. n

Smokey, (AMF Dark Beauty), lives up to her racing name. Smokey is a beautiful, black girl, about two and a half years old. She is young enough to train, especially as she completed doggy boot camp before becoming a racer. Smokey is playful, loving, and gets along well with her kennel mates. Please consider making Smokey your best couch potato friend.

Tuesday & Trumbull are a mother and son who have been together since his birth and lived with the same family as indoor dogs and regular members of the family. Apparently the family built a new house and didn’t want the dogs inside anymore, so they Doberman Rescue of the Triad surrendered them to the shelter. These dear Dobers were traumatized by their sudden circumstances. The shelter folks placed her in a foster home because of the trauma she was experiencing, and they placed him with the vet due to his underweight condition and to have him neutered. She was so distraught at being separated from her son that she howled for days until they were brought together again here with us. Because they are so closely bonded, they must be adopted together. Read more online at www.doberman-rescue.com. Make an appointment to meet them after your application has been approved. n

Isaac. Hi, I’m Isaac and I am a male domestic short hair. My estimated date of birth is 4.23.16. I am a playful dude and enjoy playing with my kitty toys at the adoption center. It’s Time To Hide The Litter Box For The Holidays!

You will soon be having guests show up at your door and there will be that ugly, messy cat litter box sitting on the floor for all to see!

The Out of Sight Litter Box cabinet system hides the litter box, and a lot more. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to not have to clean up all that tracked litter from all around your home too? This product is designed to hide and contain cat litter mess all within the cabinet, plus with the litter box raised on a second shelf, cleaning is easy on you. Just walk up, open the top lid, scoop and walk away. With this patented design your cat hops down and its paws open naturally so all the litter falls out and is trapped by the Trax-Turf. No more litter tracking. If you have a dog this cabinet keeps dogs (and small children) out of the litter pan too. Included with your choice of White, Maple, Oak, Mahogany,Walnut or Black cabinet, are two (2) High-Sided litter boxes, the Trax-Turf pads, a scoop & an odor absorber. Visit the Out of Sight Litter Box website, & see how this Made-In-America product will change your litter box problems. www.outofsightlitterbox.com

Meet Lindsay!

Lindsay knows she can look a little stern at times, she’s heard there’s even a name for it... something about a resting witch face she thinks. But she’d like for you to know she’s really a big softy who loves everyone she meets. Stop by FCAC and give Lindsay a chance to show you her sweet side.
