Alice Photo courtesy of Alison Shermeta.

Sweet-natured, friendly Alice has come a long way since entering our shelter as a stray. Shy at first, she was seeking attention and smiling for the camera within 10 minutes! Due to her quiet and loving manner, Alice is another favorite at the shelter. Alice loves talking with her friends, clipping coupons and is currently saving her money for a trip to visit the Grand Canyon! Interested in a travel buddy? Angelique Fuller, DVM Dr. Angelique Fuller is the owner/veterinarian at King’s Crossing Animal Hospital in Oak Ridge, North Carolina. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and Production for Theater from The North Carolina School of the Arts in 1997, a Master of Science in Animal Health Science from The North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University in 2003 and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from North Carolina State University in 2007. After graduation, Dr. Fuller worked full time at Guilford Jamestown Veterinary Hospital in Greensboro and as a relief emergency veterinarian at Carolina Veterinary Specialist and Emergency Services of Forsyth County. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Fuller has had a wide variety of life experiences and finds that her art and medicine backgrounds blend together seamlessly. Growing up, she has always had a love for animals and realized early that a pet’s health and well-being played an important role in the humananimal bond. Dr. Fuller, husband Brian and their son enjoy sharing their home with a cat named Burman and two dogs (Duncan and Goosie). They also have five beautiful chickens that they adore!

Canine GI Upset – When to Seek Medical Attention

Q A

What is GI upset? GI upset could be as obvious as diarrhea and vomiting, or less noticeable things like decreased appetite, burping, or increased gas. Some dogs will seek out grass to eat, others will drool more. Some are tense when you feel their bellies and other can even become aggressive due to pain. The most common of these symptoms we see is diarrhea. Diarrhea is increased frequency of bowel movements, loose stools, or an increased amount of stool. It’s important as a pet owner to note what your dog’s stool looks like normally, so you can recognize any changes.

Q A

What causes diarrhea in a dog? There are many, many reasons for a dog to have diarrhea. Typically, we try to look at the age and other overall health of the dog and then determine our top differential causes. One of the most common causes of acute diarrhea is dietary indiscretion – ie – dogs eating things they should not eat or a sudden change in diet. Other more serious causes include toxins, Parvovirus, Salmonella, Clostridium, Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, pancreatitis, liver disease, foreign body, Addision’s Disease, parasites and food allergy.

Q A

Q A

How do we treat diarrhea in dogs? We treat this by addressing the underlying problem. If it is due to dietary indiscretion, then often we will have the owners feed a bland diet and slowly reintroduce their normal food after two to three days. Sometimes, additional medications to slow things down a bit and help to decrease volume or frequency of diarrhea are prescribed. Parasites require a dewormer and follow up. More severe causes may require hospitalization and fluid therapy.

Q A

So, when do you seek medical advice?

As a general rule, I think diarrhea lasting longer than 24 hours should be addressed. Early treatment is essential to prevent more serious illness such as pancreatitis, vomiting, anorexia, etc. If other clinical signs are present, such as vomiting or lack of appetite, then you should seek immediate help. If your dog is a puppy or unvaccinated for Parvovirus get help as well. Most cases will resolve within several days with treatment. It is important to monitor your dog closely during this time to ensure they are responding to the treatment your veterinarian has prescribed. Always follow up with your veterinarian as directed, which will often include the rechecking of a fecal sample.

How do we determine the cause of diarrhea in dogs? Gathering a complete history is very important. Next, we collect a fecal sample. We note the consistency, color and if there is mucus or blood present. We then make a fecal smear to assess bacteria population and to screen for certain parasites, such as Giardia. A fecal float is used to check for parasite ova and oocysts. In most cases we can formulate a plan based on the information we get from these simple diagnostics, physical exam and history. However, additional tests may be needed to solve the problem or if the diarrhea is chronic and not acute.

Stevie

Laurie Merritt Photography

Canine Cover Model Winner by Cheryl Cumbo

S

tevie reminds me every day why I became a veterinary technician. He was scheduled to be euthanized after living on the streets for two years seeking shelter and food wherever he could find it. His skin had become so infected from a flea infestation that it caused him to lose all of his fur and develop a horrible smell and he was very emaciated. The person who transported him to us felt like he was suffering and wanted to alleviate his misery. I was the chosen one to bring him into an exam room to start the euthanasia process. I opened his carrier, he came running out, wagging his tail, jumped up on me and gave me the biggest kiss you can imagine. I knew then why I was the chosen person and he has been with me ever since! 12

Vet’s Corner Janine M. Oliver, DVM Dr. Oliver earned her B.S. in Physical Therapy (1987) from East Carolina University and her D.V.M. from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine (2008). She was a human physical therapist for 12 years before returning to school to study veterinary medicine. She had additional training in veterinary nutrition, dentistry, exotics and emergency critical care. She is a general practitioner veterinarian with special interests in geriatric feline and canine internal medicine, nutrition, physical rehabilitation, soft tissue surgery, dentistry, and exotics. She moved to Greensboro in 2009 and loves what she does every day.

The Shocking Truth...Normal, Healthy Cats Do Not Vomit! I’m not sure exactly when in my life, before or during veterinary training, I was led to believe that it is normal for cats to routinely vomit maybe once or twice a week. Sadly I was one of those vets who just chalked up “occasional cat vomiting” as normal. My own cats, Ellen and Barney, would vomit hair balls about once a week. It was gross, especially when stepped on in a sleepy trip to the bathroom, but I thought it was normal and that my cats were healthy. They are short haired cats but still would shed a lot. In addition to hair balls, my wife was terribly allergic to our cats and so they had to stay in only certain parts of our house to enable her to breathe normally. I fed them a high quality premium dry cat food with canned food as a treat every so often for most of their 12 and 11 year old lives. Then I changed their food. About six months ago I decided to put a few of my canine patients, who just weren’t improving on their prescription diets like I thought they should, on a fresh whole food diet. I created a complete and balanced fresh whole food version of their prescription diets and the five cases I tried it with, all improved. I decided to feed all of my personal pets this way, my dogs and my cats. I changed the recipe to meet feline requirements and after two weeks I was shocked to notice that there were no longer any cat fur tumble weeds in our house between vacuuming. In addition to this, my wife was starting to interact with Ellen and Barney more and she wasn’t immediately starting to wheeze or sniffle…and added bonus, I have not had to clean up a vomited hair ball in 6 months. I attended the American Association of Feline Practitioners annual conference in Indianapolis at the end of September. The first lecture was given by Dr. Gary Northsworthy, a veterinarian specifically ABVP board certified in feline medicine. There were hundreds of veterinarians in attendance. He asked us how many of us had cats and every single person in the room raised their hands. Then he asked us how many of our personal cats vomited once a week and the vast majority of us feline practicing veterinarians kept our hands raised. He chuckled and then began to school us on why we were wrong and how we could help our poor vomiting cats. There were many good speakers over those three days, but his talk stood out to me as the most important one. It made me realize the reason Ellen and Barney weren’t vomiting anymore was their change of diet. Dr. Northsworthy’s talk combined with Ellen and Barney’s improvement made me immediately revise my feline recommendations when I returned to work. Dr. Northsworthy presented evidence based medical facts and recommendations on how to manage this vast and increasing number of vomiting cats in our midst. I immediately received some of the same feedback from clients that he had predicted in his talk. Because chronic vomiting is very common in cats we have all made excuses for it.

Here are a few of the excuses that we as veterinarians hear every day and many of us incorrectly believed to be true: • My cat eats too fast. • My cat has a nervous stomach. • It is just hairballs and they are normal. • “He’s just a puker,” i.e., it is normal for this cat. The majority of chronic vomiting and chronic diarrhea in cats is from inflammation in the small bowel, not in the stomach or large bowel with very few occasional exceptions. Small bowel disease is segmental in 75%+ of cats. That means it can be hard to find if you try to look for it with an endoscope or only take a single site sample during biopsy. Diagnostics Your Veterinarian May NEED to do to diagnose your chronically vomiting cat: Blood work, radiographs, abdominal ultrasound, eight to twelve week food trial and surgical biopsies of the small intestine, liver and pancreas. The BAD NEWS? Vomiting in cats is not normal and in 19% of vomiting cats there will be a sad diagnosis and limited treatments available. The GOOD NEWS? We can effectively treat 81% of vomiting cats with diet plus or minus one or more medications! That is fantastic news! That means that 81% of vomiting cats do not have to vomit any more. They don’t have to hide their GI pain and feel grumpy and miserable. They don’t have to waste away and their quality of life can dramatically improve! You don’t have to step in and/ or clean up vomited hair balls! How do we manage these vomiting cats? That will depend on the cause of their vomiting. Discuss any vomiting that happens more than twice a month with your veterinarian. Based on a thorough physical exam they will make diagnostic, diet and treatment recommendations. Most cat diets should consist of a complete and balanced moist canned or homemade diet high in quality protein, moderate in good fats and low in carbohydrates. They should never contain food coloring or chemical preservatives. Some cats don’t even tolerate “natural preservatives” like rosemary or mixed tocopherols, “aka” vitamin E. Unfortunately not all cats immediately like wet food, and most cats don’t enjoy rapid change. There are feline carbohydrate addicts out there who can be difficult to switch to any canned food, let alone a healthy one. Talk to your veterinarian about tips to transition cats from dry to canned and what foods they recommend.

Amos

Daphne the

is a 5 month old kitten. He has a gorgeous cream colored coat and his eyes will melt your heart. This little guy loves to cuddle after a long day of playing. Amos enjoys the company of other animals, especially other kitties. He gets very bored Photo Courtesy of Furry Paws Photography when he is alone, so please only inquire about Amos if you have another kitty or if you plan on adopting two (can you REALLY only have just one?!).

Dachshund is 2 years old and BOY does she love to play. She gets along very well with other dogs and kitties who don’t mind friendly games of chase. We are definitely working with her on her kitty manners! Daphne is learning house and crate-training and is doing well. She enjoys walks and cuddling on the couch. Daphne wants to be wherever you areAdopt her today!

Bella

is a 6 year old Corgi mix. She has a bit of a skin condition, which we are treating. However, she may need to be on medication for her environmental allergies for life. Look at that face, though, she’s SO worth it! Bella likes to dance when she is excited, and especially when she’s about to get a treat! She has a great set of ears and she uses then to listen VERY well. She walks beautifully on a leash and she loves other animals! Adopt this sweet girl! For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n

Lizzy is such a small

Katie

the tabbico is 7 years old and still available. She has been with HSAC for almost 2 years. Now don’t get us wrong- we LOVE having Katie in the office, but we know that what she wants most is a home to call her own. Katie does well with the other kitties who hang out at the office and the office dogs. Her only request is that other animals in the home be calm, and leave her alone when she’s trying to nap! If you think Katie is the girl for you- let us know! For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n

Lexi

tortie girl, weighing only 3.5 pounds at 5 months old! We think she will always be a petite little kitty- even as an adult. Lizzy was shy when she first came to the office, but by the second day, she was hamming it up for love and treats. Lizzy gets along well with other animals and enjoys napping in a patch of sunshine. She loves to play with her toy mice, especially when they’re covered in catnip. She also enjoys her scratching posts and climbing the kitty towers!

the terrier mix is 6 years old and she weighs 14 pounds. Lexi is very sweet with other animals and she loves playing! Her favorite thing is to be out in the grass, tossing a toy in the air! Lexi dances for attention and she dances when she sees her leash because she knows it’s time for a walk! Lexi has a knee problem, which we control very well with glucosamine supplements and pain meds on her bad days. The vet expects her to live a long and happy life!

Keebler

Turkey.

is an awesome light orange tabby with the coat of a chinchilla. He is super soft and super sweet. Keebler was born on 8/13/14 so he is still very much a baby. He is neutered and up-to-date on his shots. This little guy is easy to fall in love with because of his outgoing personality and his easygoing ways. Keebler has been with other cats and loves them. He has also been with dogs and is fine with them. Anyone looking for a diamond in the rough? Here he is.

This sweet kitty is named Turkey because she was rescued on Thanksgiving Day by a family out walking their dog. They wanted to be her forever home but a child in the family is extremely allergic to cats. When Turkey is not playing at full speed she is a snuggly lap kitty with a loud purr box. She does fine with dogs that are sweet to her. Turkey was born around 6/1/14 and is spayed and up-to-date on her shots. She would love to have a forever home to call her own. How about your home?

H-E-L-L-O, I’m still here! My name is Breeze and I was in this wonderful magazine last month but did you come and get me? Nope! I’m so sad. So, now my goal is to be in a forever home by Valentine’s Day! Can we (you) make that happen? I’m a girl and probably a Beagle mix of some type. There’s not much history on me. Birthdate of 10/4/14 sounded good to me. My foster mom says I’m a sweet girl but I still need to work on the house-training but hey, don’t we all?

Carrick.

Born 4/21/14, this handsome guy is Midas. He’s a brilliant orange tabby with wonderful markings. Midas is a people lover and loves to be held. He is always in sight following his favorite volunteers around. Midas is neutered, up-to-date on shots and negative for feline diseases. He is a wonderful cat that will fit into most any home. Are you looking for a new lover?

The term “big brother” really fits Carrick’s description, since he towers a bit over his sister Corinne. Carrick’s big boy paws match his lion-like voice. He LOVES to talk and will hasten you to start your day...and his...by giving him his breakfast, and dinner and playtime in between! He was the first out of the door to the kitten room, loudly announcing his presence, and would lead Corinne cautiously yet courageously through a small maze of rooms, until they came to the NEWSPAPERS on the floor. Carrick would slide into a perfect landing, and even today loves to play with balled up newspaper. Can you believe that this gentle little giant is also a cuddler, and loves to rest on his foster mom’s shoulder? He will be your BFF forever!

Saying Good-Bye To A Pet by R.V. Wakefield III

“Lord God, maker of all living creatures, you called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. We humbly beseech you to accept (the name of the pet) into your heavenly kingdom and by the power of your love enable us to accept your plan.” I always try to say this prayer with friends who have recently lost a pet, hoping to help them lessen their grief. Having to say good-by to a pet who has been a part of one’s life, whether for a few weeks or years is heartbreaking. There are no words, sentiments, or actions which will completely ease one’s grief or sadness. If one does not feel grief, heartache, or sadness when it comes time to say good-bye to a pet, there was no love there. In nature, there is a balance. When it involves pets, happiness is balanced by sadness, love is balanced by grief. Before one experiences grief there has to have been love. If one truly loves a pet, eventually grief will follow. Love and grief are bonded, you will not have one without the other. When the final time comes, consider going to a quiet place, either alone, or with friends, and recall the good times, the silly things, maybe even the bad times with your pet. Hopefully this will help you to accept God’s plan.

SHOULD I GET ANOTHER PET AFTER LOSING ONE? “I don’t think I could handle the grief again if I lost another pet” is something I hear often from someone who has recently lost a pet and talks about getting another. I know it hurts to lose a loving pet and another will never completely replace the one lost. But to deny yourself to experience that kind of love is a tragedy. I feel sorry for someone who has never experienced the unconditional love given by a pet. This kind of love is given freely and with no strings attached. It cannot be explained, but it is there just as surely as the sun rises in East and sets in West. I am not suggesting anyone who loses a pet should immediately go and get another. Each of us handles grief differently. Just don’t shut yourself off because you are afraid of being hurt. Be honest and you will know when it is time to find a new friend.

Remy & Emile

Jonas.

You couldn’t ask for a friendlier fella than Jonas. He doesn’t mind being held and has an excellent disposition. We would encourage anyone interested in adopting a Chinchilla to do their research first. Chinchillas require special living quarters, including dust, and a special diet to make sure that they stay happy and healthy. They also enjoy a good romp through the house but can not use small critter balls as they can overheat in them. Jonas would make a great pet for the right home either an experienced Chinchilla owner or someone willing to work with our staff to set up his habitat and home to meet his needs. Please stay tuned for additional updates on Jonas as we get to know him. In them meantime, please feel free to fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Oakley

were surrendered to us when their owners could no longer care for them. According to the surrendering owner, they have been handled previously. However, they haven’t been handled for a while. Their foster mom is spending lots of time socializing but they are still a little shy. Rats can make fantastic pets for experienced and new small animal owners. For now, we recommend that Remy and Emile go to an experienced home or with someone willing to get assistance in working with them. They are very cute and sweet rats. They just need to get used to getting handled again.

is an eleven year old mixed breed that has been with us for quite some time waiting on her forever family. Don’t let her age fool you Oakley is still a young girl at heart. She came to us when her owner had to move and could no longer care for her. Oakley is a sweet girl and would love a family to dote on her in her senior years. She is up-to-date on vaccines, spayed, and microchipped. Oakley is in great health and has lots of kisses to give her family. Oakley is particular about her four-legged friends and would do best as the only pet in her new home.

If you are interested in adopting Remy and/or Emile, please apply at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Minnie.

“Skinny Minnie” was a stray in the Chapel Hill area who was finally lured into a horse trailer and delivered to us by the family who found her. She was very, very skinny, but otherwise healthy. She has now been vaccinated and on her way back to a healthy weight. Minnie is now in a herd of goats and miniature horses in her foster home and is doing great. She will come right up and eat out of her foster mom’s hand. She just needed a herd to make her comfortable. She would make a great addition to any goat herd. If you are interested in adopting Minnie please fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Hannahis a 15 year old quarter horse that came to us from a neglect situation. When she came to us she was 150-200 pounds underweight and very skittish. We’ve worked hard on socializing and carefully re-feeding her over the last several months. She is now at a perfect weight and working with a trainer twice a week to work on her trust of people. She is still on the skittish side but a very sweet girl. If you are interested in adopting Hannah, please fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Lady.

Meet Rinoa.

She’s a lady! Lady is a 7 month-old Boxer mix awaiting her fur-ever home at the SPCA. In typical Boxer fashion, she’s got plenty of energy and a heart of gold! If you are in need of a smile, you have got to meet Miss Lady. She loves other dogs so the more canine brothers and sisters the better! Lady wants to be your next best fur-iend!

in a fur-ever canine? Are you Rinoa’s hero?

Molly

She is a beautiful, friendly girl. Rinoa is a 4 year-old Husky/Sheperd mix. We rescued her through a partnership with a local animal shelter. She loves dogs, cats, and even kids so she will make a great family dog for a lucky family! She’s also housebroken and crate-trained. What more could you ask for

Lucy

is ready to be your furever canine! She is a 1 year-old German Shepherd. Molly’s owner couldn’t keep her because she had to move to a residence that was not dogfriendly. Luckily, the SPCA is very dogfriendly! We took her in and are now searching for a paw-some fur-ever home for this sweet, smart, beautiful girl!

is simply stunning! This pretty kitty loves attention and affection. She is a beautiful, fluffy, diluted calico. Lucy was found as a stray this summer at a church in Greensboro. When she first came to us, she showed a little bit of cat aggression but is learning to love her fellow feline. With the right introduction and patience she could get along just fine in a house of other cats. She loves to snooze in a sunny window or a warm lap. This fluffy bombshell needs a fur-ever home!

Sting

Jack

will get you right through the heart! But in the best way possible of course. Sting is 6 months old. He loves to talk to you and let you know how his day is going and how you can make it even better. Usually, the answer is a nice head and back rub. He was found as a stray near a feral colony but the vet said he was just too sweet to be released back as a feral. Sting loves affection, playing with other cats and following you around!

If you are looking for a lap cat, you have got to meet Jack! He is 5 months old, adores being held and loves to cuddle. His purr motor is always on when you are near. Jack was found as a tiny kitten with a gash down the side of his face. His eye has recently been removed and is healing up very nicely. Despite the horrible start that Jack had to life, he is one of the sweetest cats you will ever meet. He’s got a great, playful attitude and charming personality!

Ben

is a short hair neutered male cat. He’s mostly black with a white pendant. He was found wandering in an Ardmore neighborhood by an AARF volunteer. Asked to describe himself, he says: “I am a love bug. I like to talk, too. I was beaten up by a neighborhood cat, but am mending fast. I am scared of

other cats.” DOB 12/10/12.

is a dark orange and white DSH tabby with brilliant copper eyes. He was born in April 2014. He’s the big boy of his litter -- and also the quietest. Pascal doesn’t need a lot of “loving” except at bed time. He’s ready for a new home.

I came from a backyard breeder and ended up at a flea market when the breeder realized that I had something wrong with my eyes. I’m now 4 months old, will probably end up weighing 18 lbs. when fully grown. I have had 2 out of 3 DHPP shots and have been dewormed. My eye slits don’t open all the way but have opened more than my foster mom thought they were going to. I can see enough to get around but can’t see very far in front Chihuahua Rescue of me. I am a very happy-go-lucky puppy who is all puppy. I’m working on paper training. I will need to be neutered and brought up-to-date on my shots before being adopted so if you are interested, please submit an application right away. My adoption fee will be $300 and a home visit will be required so I can only be adopted in NC/SC/VA and possibly adjoining states. Contact: carolinascoordinator@chihuahua-rescue.com. n

THE HEART OF A WARRIOR A brave feral cat had appeared in my ordinary life and showed me strength and love. by Sarah Covington Fulcher

F

ifteen years ago, I was driving home when a small cat ran out in front of my truck and darted under a dumpster at a daycare center. I decided to stop and take a closer look. I had been rescuing cats and dogs for a number of years and I wanted to help this cat also. I pulled out a flashlight and slid a can of cat food under the dumpster. Wild neon eyes shone brightly back at me. Her fur looked blue and silvery gray, so I named her “Blue.” I realized that if I didn’t rescue Blue, she would lead a short, hard, and hungry life; so I began feeding her twice a day under the dumpster. Blue quickly became a mission for me. I decided to trap her and have her spayed. There are already thousands of feral and stray cats roaming the streets of our communities having unwanted kittens. Most end up being taken to animal shelters and euthanized. On a rainy summer evening, I trapped Blue. I put a can of sardines in the trap and caught her overnight. I then took her to the vet for spaying and getting shots. I wanted to make Blue my friend, but I didn’t know how to keep her from running away. I put a collar on her, not realizing this would turn out to be a sad mistake. As I released her from the carrier, Blue bolted into the thick woods. It would be a year until she came back. I kept putting out food for feral cats and I spotted Blue eating the food during the hot summer of 2001. To my awful surprise, I saw her leg was caught in the collar. I trapped her once more and brought her inside to become my cat. I took her to the vet many times to treat the wound. At one point in her recovery, she had to have surgery. It took many weeks for the deep cut made by the tight collar to heal completely. During the early years of Blue’s life with me, I didn’t expect the special bond that grew between us. A brave feral cat had appeared in my ordinary life and showed me strength and love. Blue taught me mindfulness during the course of her life. She lived in the present and found joy in each day. Her discipline, vigilance,

38

February 2015 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

valor and perseverance impressed me. Blue showed me that life was a day to day challenge and that the journey is the hardest fight. As well as sleeping inside, Blue would run down along the creek, into the meadow and around the lake to hunt. Blue was a solitary cat. As the years continued to pass, she didn’t care for the company of other cats. During Blue’s fifteenth year, she lost most of her sight and began to lose weight. Although Blue was blind, she would follow me around the house. She would wander and bump into furniture, doors, and other cats; but she let me help her up the steps and into the litter box. Then Blue got very sick, and had trouble eating and drinking. Blue’s struggle began to teach me that suffering is the mark of our fragile lives. At one point during her illness, I thought Blue could leave me at any time. A friend dug a grave for her; but she clung to life and overcame fate once again. I waited and watched and hoped. One morning, while Blue was sick, snow fell. The terror of a dream I was having ended at dawn’s light. I looked over at Blue. She wasn’t moving. I picked up Blue and held her silently in my lap. Her ears moved slightly. “Good bye, my Love,” I whispered softly into her ear. Tears fell from my face onto her fur, and her breathing stopped. At that moment, Blue became a warrior. She found her tenth life. She would hunt the warm, flowering Elysian Fields without me now. Yet somewhere in my heart, I knew that we would meet again.

Kisses was found roaming the neighborhood by one of our former adopters. Unfortunately, the reason she had been found as a stray was because her previous owner decided he didn’t want her anymore and just turned her loose. She is about 2-3 years old and now fully vaccinated, spayed, microchipped and current on heartworm/flea/ tick preventative. She is sweet as can be! She gives kisses and The Fort Rescue even makes a kissing sound when she gets really excited, hence her name! Kisses gets along well with other dogs and is ready for her forever family! Training Your Pet

COME WHEN CALLED: A difficult command to master

by Angela Craven, Moms 4 Paws

D

ogs failing to “Come when Called” is probably one of the biggest problem behaviors that I hear. Most people who call with a young dog want to know how they can get their dog to reliably come when called. The fact is, if you really look at what you are doing with your dog, you can see why he or she may not be coming like you would expect. Let’s start with how most people call their dog to come. Usually a situation like the following arises: You have a younger dog that is still learning, and chews on something or pees on the floor. Your initial reaction is to call the dog over to you while mad, then rub their nose in it, or tell them no, fiercely, which seems like it would work. Your dog should be able to tell that you are mad about the inappropriate thing he has done. This is not necessarily true. When you call your dog in anger, all he remembers from the interaction is that you called him to you, then got yelled at. If you got yelled at every time someone called you over, would you want to go over to that person? That is what your dog feels, the bad outweighs the good and he is unsure now if he is being called for praise or punishment. This will make his “Come when Called” unreliable. Next, let’s look at how you have trained your dog to come when called. In a perfect world, every dog would always come to you right on call because you, as his owner, should be the one he wants to please the most. In reality, there are things that look so much better than you, a squirrel for instance, the neighbor’s dog, or just the fact that your dog suddenly gets to run free and play when away from you. So how can we stop this, how do we get through to our dogs and ensure they turn their attention to us and not, let’s say, Peter Rabbit? First, your basics. You want to be sure your dog really knows his basics and can do them everywhere, that your dog can do them while distracted in a controlled environment, allowing both of you to practice until he listens well. If you skip your basics and just try to teach your dog to come, you have less in your arsenal that your dog may respond to. If you have not taught your dog to “Leave It” then you have no command that may break his focus from a squirrel. Come means to come to you, yes, but “Leave it” should teach him to redirect his focus to you, to ensure he is focused on you and any other

40

February 2015 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

commands you may ask of him. Without the basics, like sit, when he comes to you and doesn’t know how to follow the “sit” command, you have nothing to use to stop him from reaching you, then continuing on past you. Many dogs come when called, only to run off again when they reach their owner, making it a game. If you teach your dog to sit after the “Come when Called” command, you then have the opportunity to grab him before he runs off. Second, rewards! Yes I know again, in a perfect world, your dog should come with no incentive, but why risk it? The best way to be certain your dog will show up when you call him is to train him to come to the best tastiest treat you can find. Now, when you work on “Come when Called” in your house or outside use only this treat, and be careful not to use it for any other basic training. You want your dog to associate that great reward with coming straight to you. The better the treat, the better his motivation to show up. Please remember that even if you do all of this you must practice with your dog. A dog that does not get his commands reinforced regularly cannot be expected to do what you ask in an emergency. You start here and then adjust methods and rewards based on your dog. All dogs, like people, are different and some may not like what others love. Your job as their owner is to find what motivates them and use it to help teach them to follow your direction, which includes coming when called. Angela Craven moved to NC six years ago. Spotlight on Camp Bow Wow

Welcome to Camp Bow Wow

A

camp for dogs?? That and so much more! We visited Camp Bow Wow® last month and quickly observed that this is a camp that dogs love to visit. . .and visit. . . and visit! We met with Paola Sá, owner of Camp Bow Wow® Greensboro.

THT: Do you Have Pets? PB: Yes, I have had dogs for the last 13 years that have filled my heart with so much love and joy. Our current dog is a Pitbull/Dalmatian mix called Diego who recently joined our family after our baby boy Simon passed away last October; he was 12 years old and my first “True Furry Love.” Simon is the reason I decided to switch careers and enter the Pet Care Business; he taught me that dogs make our lives whole by giving us true unconditional love. THT: How did you get started in the doggy day care business? PB: When Simon came into our lives, he was full of energy and mischief. He was our first dog and we knew very little about dog behavior and training. Needless to say, the first couple of years turned out to be very challenging and expensive (from all the damages). However, the biggest challenge of all was finding reliable care while we traveled and every day our hearts broke when we had to leave Simon in a crate while we went to work. My husband and I would talk constantly about opening a doggy day care, so when we saw an ad for Camp Bow Wow® offering franchises, our business and a new life for us, was born. We found Camp Bow Wow® in the summer of 2006 and by that fall we had already signed our very own franchise agreement. Camp Bow Wow® Greensboro opened its doors on October 10th, 2008. THT: Is there a customer experience you are most proud of?

Owner, Paola Sá welcoming long time Camper Jackson “Jack” Frye! 44

PB: We are very proud of all the relationships we have with our customers and of course, their dogs. The

Campers Klaus and Macie standing on their favorite spot! bond that exists between our campers and their parents makes our customer relationships more special because we are their furry babies’ “home away from home.” However, there are six specific families that have been part of our Camp Bow Wow® adventure since we opened our doors. We have cared for their dogs almost every day since they were puppies, giving us the honor to watch them grow and turn into amazing dogs. We have a special place in our hearts for these pups and we can’t thank their parents enough for their continued support and loyalty throughout all of these years. THANK YOU Rollo and Scoop Bergeron, Pepper Lamb, Winnie McGovern, Mimi and Gonzo Gonzales, Jenny Sasser and Barney Goodman! THT: What services does Camp Bow Wow® offer? PB: Our Greensboro location offers Day Care, Boarding and Grooming services. Our prices are all inclusive, so our customers never pay extra for day care, special diets, administering medications and treats when they board with us. We are open 365 days a year and there is never an additional charge for picking up/dropping off on Sundays and holidays or before and after noon on any day. We have three large indoor and outdoor play areas monitored by our Certified Camp Counselors® and equipped with high-speed webcams; puppy play equipment and pup pools in the summer. We also have a comfy lounge for our older pups that like to be lazy all day or just enjoy the constant one-on-one attention from our Certified Camp Counselors®. We are very excited to announce a new Tea Cup Play area designed exclusively for small dogs that are 12 lbs. or less. Size does matter at Camp Bow Wow® Greensboro and this new room is equipped with a special Tea Cup play structure, a high-speed webcam and of course the constant supervision of our Certified Camp Counselors®!

THT: Does Camp Bow Wow® do any charity work with the local shelter or rescues? PB: We are so honored to start working with the Guilford County Animal Shelter to foster some of their amazing dogs they have for adoption and help with fundraising! During 2015, Camp Bow Wow® Greensboro will dedicate all events to raise money and collect much needed donations for the pups in need. THT: There must be lots of funny stories in your line of work. Can you tell us of any? PB: We’ve had our share of funny episodes like one Camper trying to poop her owner’s t-shirt eaten the night before or the dog who took some time to spit out her owner’s underwear right in the middle of our play yard! But the one story that has amused us for days is from a Camper that threw a fit in the parking lot after every day care visit during his first month at Camp. He literally threw himself on the concrete refusing to get into his mom’s car to go home, forcing her to carry him into the car. Needless to say, our new camper finally understood that if he went home peacefully, he would come back to play the next day! THT: What are some of your greatest challenges in your business?

Years ago, dogs used to have jobs to help with chores around the house and/or farms (hunting, guarding, herding, etc) but the only job dogs have today is to love their parents and families unconditionally, leaving them bored and filled with excess energy which may get them into trouble and cause major behavioral issues. Just please don’t move the furniture and, no stairs please. He was rescued by Pug Rescue from the shelter and was truly broken BUT his foster Pug Rescue of NC mom has done everything in her power to heal both mind and body. NOW after some time, love, medication and the right food, he’s doing much better and starting to LOVE life! His foster mom says he has blossomed into a sweet and lovable Pug. Please give him a forever home for the new year! Please put in your application online at www.pugrescuenc.org, or you can email: pugrescueofnc@gmail.com. n
