Charlee’s Story

My name is Charlee. This month marks my 1-year anniversary as a Foster at Camp Bow Wow Greensboro. I don’t remember much about my life before I became a Foster Camper except that I had spent 6 months at the Guilford County Animal Shelter. My human friends don’t think I ever had a real home or if I did, I must not have experienced much love and care because I’ve had to work hard on my self-confidence during the last year. Not everyone has the same opportunity to give a great “First Impression” and I’m afraid I fall into that category. Because I’ve never had the opportunity to build a strong bond with a human, it’s hard for me to show affection or be playful with strangers. However, once I trust a human my real personality is revealed! The truth is I am such a gentle boy, so eager to please and have so much love to give! I’ve already stolen the hearts of everyone at Camp Bow Wow and for the last few months, I have been given the wonderful opportunity to live with new my best friend James Voyatzis, owner of Sitzen K9 Training. James has patiently worked with me and has taught me all the basic commands and the manners of a good dog! My self-confidence has improved and it’s a lot easier for me to make new friends, both human and dogs! I’m housebroken and my favorite things to do are rest by my loyal trainer’s feet and show him how grateful I am for giving me a chance to be a great dog!

Please Read My Story

I’m ready for a home to call my own and for a family to love and cherish for the rest of my doggy life! My friends at Camp Bow Wow will give my new family 20 Days of day care to help them adjust to a life with me in my FUR-Ever home! Feel free to contact my trainer James at Sitzen K9 Training (336-908-1467) or call Camp Bow Wow Greensboro at 336-323-3133.

CHRONIC INFLAMMATION - the story of when good immune systems go bad Living multicellular organisms (including cats, dogs and humans) have developed a set of specialized enzymes and proteins that have evolved over hundreds of millions of years to defend our bodies against microbial attacks from the outside world. Once the microbes are killed off by any number of interactions with these enzymes and proteins then the immune “soup” can start to heal damaged cells, or if the attacked cells are too badly damaged to function it eliminates them. This inflammatory immune response is relatively simplistic and is known as the innate immune system- think Pac-Man, pub bouncer or an attack dog. The adaptive immune system is more complicated and comes into play when something slips by the innate immune system, think Navy Seal Team or CIA. For decades most research and medical therapies were aimed at the adaptive immune system, but in the past 15 years, much more attention has been paid to innate immunity. Inflammation, its primary characteristic, and has now been identified as an underlying contributor to all of the known chronic diseases—a list that includes arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, depression, heart disease and vascular disease. Now researchers are finding very strong contributing links to cancer. The immune inflammatory state has been shown to be a key mediator in certain stages of tumor development. All cancer begins with genetic changes that tell a group of cells to over-replicate and then to branch out and invade surrounding tissue. In some cases tumor cells may break off and seed new growths (metastases) at other sites in the body. Cancer biologists and immunologists now know that the progression from abnormal tissue to confirmed invasive cancer happens with cells that normally aid in healing cuts and scrapes. These cells get diverted to the area of genetically premalignant tissue, where they are turned into agents of carcinogenesis. Some researchers have described cancer as genetic damage being the match that lights the fire, and inflammation as the fuel that feeds the fire. We all need inflammation when we have a wound, it’s necessary to start the healing process, but we don’t want too much inflammation because then it puts us at risk for fanning the flames and letting the fire get out of control. Brief, transient inflammation can be very helpful, but chronic inflammation or raging inflammation can be as damaging to mammals as an out of control forest fire to adjacent neighborhoods. Causes of chronic inflammation in our pets (and people too) include: obesity, untreated dental disease, asthma/chronic bronchitis, untreated or minimally treated wounds, diabetes, hypo or hyperthyroidism, Cushing’s disease, allergies to food or environment, chemicals and pollutants in our food, air and water, unintended side effects of some medications or adverse reactions to medications, untreated anxiety, preventable parasites like heart worms, intestinal parasites, fleas and ticks, ear mites and larvae of certain insects. What our pets eat and the irritants they are exposed to on a daily basis mat-

ter. Any chronic inflammatory process left untreated can result in increased intestinal permeability or what you may have heard referred to as “leaky gut syndrome”. As the walls of their GI tract becomes more permeable- think mosquito netting instead of brick wall- proteins can leak from the gut into the blood stream. Your pet’s immune system will begin to recognize these leaked proteins as similar to proteins that make up tissues in the body like brain tissue, thyroid tissue, kidney tissue, joint lining tissue. It will mount an immune response, an innate immune response against those tissues. This is when you may see your pet seem to lose energy or sleep more, or get up slower, or their skin may become more sensitive, or their thyroid or kidney function may deteriorate, or they may start to develop one or more tumors. They may itch and scratch all of the time or develop chronic diarrhea or vomiting or BOTH! Inflammation can be friend or foe. It can act as an early warning system and help in the short term, or left untreated and allowed to burn out of control it can trigger a whole host of disease states and even cancer. It is important to the long term health and quality of life for your pet that you work with your veterinarian to mitigate inflammation and prevent it when appropriate and possible. —The number one thing you can do for your pet’s health at home is manage what they eat and how much they eat. Preventing obesity and providing a high quality diet will save you money and prolong the healthy life of your pet. —The number two thing you can do at home is to make sure your pet does not smoke. If you or a family member smoke and cannot stop for your own health benefit, at least make every attempt to not smoke around your pet. They not only inhale your second hand smoke, they also lick the residue off of their fur. The same smoke residue that accumulates on ceilings and walls in the home of a smoker, accumulates on the fur and skin of their pets. —The third thing you can do is work closely with your veterinarian to prevent parasites and disease. Heart worm prevention, intestinal parasite prevention and flea and tick prevention year round are vital to preventing chronic inflammation. Appropriate vaccinations for your pet’s risk exposure are also important. It’s true that over vaccination can cause inflammation but so can UNDER vaccination. Remember microbes- bacteria and viruses- cause inflammation too. It’s best to prevent the invasion whenever possible. There is no extra cost involved in diet and exercise. There is tremendous hidden cost both monetary and in detriment to your pet’s health when inflammation is allowed to run amok. 1052 Grecade St., Greensboro 336.897.1505 • Dr.O@dro.vet See ad for Benessere on page 53 www.triadhappytails.com February 2016

Triad-area Guide to Animal Nonprofits

I

n 2015, we had plenty of headlines about animals in the Triad. For the first time in more than 15 years, the Guilford County Animal Shelter, one of the largest shelters in the state, is back under the auspices of county management. The publishers of Triad Happy Tails Magazine, along with many dedicated animal professionals and volunteers in the Triad, are hoping that 2016 will be a year of only good headlines for homeless animals in our area. With this goal in mind, Triad Happy Tails presents its first annual Triadarea Guide to Animal Nonprofits—our hope is that this special issue will become a yearly tradition! In addition to our county animal services (which are also listed here), we are fortunate in the Triad to have many nonprofits (incorporated as 501c3’s) with dedicated individuals who put in countless hours and resources to improve the lives of homeless cats and dogs. Some of them even rival the large shelters in terms of number of adoptions done annually (for instance, Juliet’s House adopted out over 800 homeless cats and kittens during 2015 alone). Many of these groups rescue animals from shelters and individual homes and find them new homes, thereby saving those animals from almost-certain death; others, like FCAP (Feral Cat Assistance Program) run a monthly surgery clinic for spay/neuter of feral cats, thereby reducing the numbers of outdoor homeless cats. And while on the very important topic of spay/neuter, please note that low-cost spay/neuter clinics in the area are also listed in this Guide, though they are private businesses and not nonprofits (in the state of NC, veterinary clinics that perform procedures on owned pets must be private businesses owned by an individual vet, and not 501c3s. However, 501c3s may be affiliated with low-cost vet clinics, as the Humane Society of the Piedmont is affiliated with Planned Pethood.) We are extremely fortunate in the Triad to have several low cost spay/neuter clinics within a small radius. In some parts of our state, pet owners, rescue volunteers, and feral cat trappers must drive for over an hour, sometimes two hours, simply to reach a

12

February 2016 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

By Beverly Levine low-cost spay/neuter clinic. Anyone, regardless of income, can make an appointment at one of the low-cost clinics. However, individuals with low incomes who need even lower prices than are charged at the low-cost clinics often can find extra financial help through a nonprofit in their area. For instance, residents of Guilford County who receive social services like food stamps or Medicaid can receive a voucher from Project BARK to have a pet spayed or neutered at a low-cost clinic for as little as $15, thereby saving upwards of $50 or $60 off the already low-cost surgeries. All of the rescue groups here need help from the community— financial donations, in-kind donations of food, litter, office supplies— as well as “donations” of time to help foster animals, bring them to adoption fairs, and the like. If you have time in your life to help homeless animals, please consider reaching out to a rescue group and giving what you can in terms of time or resources. Nearly all of these groups put 100% of all donations straight to work for the animals. And please don’t forget to promote low-cost spay/neuter at every opportunity you can. The animal shelters in the Triad, plus all the rescue groups, take in over 30,000 dogs and cats each year, and there simply aren’t enough homes for them all every year. No community has “adopted” their way out of animal overpopulation and the consequent tragic reality of euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals. The only way out of this situation is through increased spay/neuter. Finally—many volunteers with the rescue groups listed in this Guide are members of HOPE (Halting Overpopulation and Preventing Euthanasia), which is a loosely-organized coalition of animal volunteers and animals professionals in the Triad dedicated to intelligently and compassionately reducing the need for euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals here. For more information on how to join HOPE, contact Beverly Levine at bjrockhill@outlook.com. Thank you for caring about, and being the voice for, the homeless animals in the Triad.

Canine GI Upset – When to Seek Medical Attention Symptoms of GI upset in dogs

Treating diarrhea in dogs

GI upset could be as obvious as diarrhea and vomiting, or less noticeable things like decreased appetite, burping, or increased gas. Some dogs will seek out grass to eat, others will drool more. Some are tense when you feel their bellies and other can even become aggressive due to pain. The most common of these symptoms we see is diarrhea. Diarrhea is increased frequency of bowel movements, loose stools, or an increased amount of stool. It’s important as a pet owner to note what your dog’s stool looks like normally, so you can recognize any changes.

We treat this by addressing the underlying problem. If it is due to dietary indiscretion, then often we will have the owners feed a bland diet and slowly reintroduce their normal food after two to three days. Sometimes, additional medications to slow things down a bit and help to decrease volume or frequency of diarrhea are prescribed. Parasites require a dewormer and follow up. More severe causes may require hospitalization and fluid therapy.

Causes of diarrhea in a dog

As a general rule, I think diarrhea lasting longer than 24 hours should be addressed. Early treatment is essential to prevent more serious illness such as pancreatitis, vomiting, anorexia, etc. If other clinical signs are present, such as vomiting or lack of appetite, then you should seek immediate help. If your dog is a puppy or unvaccinated for Parvovirus get help as well. Most cases will resolve within several days with treatment. It is important to monitor your dog closely during this time to ensure they are responding to the treatment your veterinarian has prescribed. Always follow up with your veterinarian as directed, which will often include the rechecking of a fecal sample.

There are many, many reasons for a dog to have diarrhea. Typically, we try to look at the age and other overall health of the dog and then determine our top differential causes. One of the most common causes of acute diarrhea is dietary indiscretion – ie – dogs eating things they should not eat or a sudden change in diet. Other more serious causes include toxins, Parvovirus, Salmonella, Clostridium, Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, pancreatitis, liver disease, foreign body, Addision’s Disease, parasites and food allergy.

Determining the cause of diarrhea in dogs Gathering a complete history is very important. Next, we collect a fecal sample. We note the consistency, color and if there is mucus or blood present. We then make a fecal smear to assess bacteria population and to screen for certain parasites, such as Giardia. A fecal float is used to check for parasite ova and oocysts. In most cases we can formulate a plan based on the information we get from these simple diagnostics, physical exam and history. However, additional tests may be needed to solve the problem or if the diarrhea is chronic and not acute.

When should you seek medical advice for you dog?

Derek. Hi, my name is Derek. I am a DLH hunk of a guy. I am mostly white with some black areas. I love to eat. Let me tell you about myself… Sweetness, loving, cuddle bunny, snuggler. Oh, and on top of all that, I’m playful too! If you take me home, you’ll never be lonely. I don’t care if you’re having a bad hair day, if your boss gave you a hard time, or if you haven’t had a bath in a week. I’ll still love you and want to be your best friend. I was born April 16, 2015, so I’m still young, but just looking at myself in a mirror, I can tell that I’ll be a beautiful lady. Don’t let the chance to take me home pass you by…

is a super handsome boy who came to us as a stray in November. We think he is about 2 years old and is a mix of Lab, Hound, Collie? We don’t know why no one came to look for him, but we do know he is happy and very sweet. His eyes are so expressive, they speak to your heart. Oliver can be energetic, but once he gets the wiggles out, he is fine. He is smart, learns quickly and loves everyone that he meets. Please consider giving this wonderful boy a place in your heart and home. Meet him at Burlington Animal Services, 221 Stone Quarry Rd., Haw River, or call 578-0343 for more information. Mojo is a five year old Chi-weenie that was rescued from a local shelter. He is a tiny little thing that loves to find a warm being to snuggle with, whether it’s a human or his 80 pound Labrador foster brother. His foster mom says, “He’s a sweet boy that just loves to curl up in your lap. He enjoys a walk and playing with his toys. He’s a really easy dog and is crate-trained.” Mojo gets along with other dogs, and is approved for children 10 and up. Wouldn’t you love this little guy to sit in your lap and snuggle? Mojo is fully vetted, microchipped and his adoption fee is $100.00.

Treasure House, Burlington, NC - Please adopt! Niall. How about a loverboy for Valentines? Born around late March 2015, Niall is a gorgeous rumpy Manx mix boy who loves all people. He likes to play and will play and purr loudly at the same time. He also adores a cardboard scratcher. You can turn Tailless Cat Rescue him upside down in your arms like a baby and rub his face and chin and he adores it. And if you wear a fuzzy fleece robe or sweater, he might try to knead and nurse on it. He doesn’t like other cats, he wants to be your one and only cat love. But if you do want an only cat to snuggle and play with, he would be purrfect! He is up-to-date on vaccinations, wormed and treated for fleas. He is FeLV and FIV negative, neutered, and microchipped.

Charlie.

You can always find hope in a dog’s eyes -- and look at our sweet Charlie’s eyes -- they are hoping to find her furever home soon! Charlie is a female, 3-year old Pit mix. She is a smart and curious dog who loves walks and playtime. She loves, loves, loves people and wants nothing more than to cuddle and please them! Charlie is a dominant dog and would be best suited in an only dog home (absolutely no cats whatsoever - she goes after them). Call 336-438-2023, visit www.hsaconline.org or send an email to hsacinfo@gmail.com for more information. n

Snow.

“Meow” means “woof ” in cat!!! Snow (short for Snow White) is a sweet, independent cat who would love nothing more than to have her forever humans all to herself. She is almost 2 years old and litter box trained. Snow is currently in one of our PetSmart condos in Alamance Crossing if you would like to visit this beauty! Call 336-438-2023, visit www.hsaconline.org or send an email to hsacinfo@gmail.com for more information. n

Katie is a very playful and sweet 9 year old kitty. She loves to cuddle and romp after her feather toys. Katie would prefer to be the only cat in the house but that’s only because she’d love nothing more than to shower her humans with all of the love and affection she has for them! Callie. Second hand animals make first class pets!!! Callie is fairly new to our foster program and she is one loving dog. She is a 4 year old Pug/Shar-Pei mix. Callie is housebroken, gets along great with other dogs and absolutely loves people! If you ever wanted a potbellied pig as a pet, you would love Callie -- she grunts and snorts just like a little pig -- and it is absolutely adorable! Call 336-438-2023, visit www.hsaconline.org or send an email to hsacinfo@gmail.com for more information. n

Fluffy. Are you looking for something soft and cuddly? If so, we have the perfect girl for you—meet Fluffy! Booker.

A wagging tail, a friendly woof -- Booker has it all! He is a handsome Boxer-Lab mix, almost 4 years old, sweet and loyal. He is a big boy (around 85 lbs.) who MUST be an inside dog. He is house-trained and well-mannered in the home. Booker is very people-oriented, and needs to be part of the family. He does well with other dogs and older kids, but no cats please. Booker is moderately energetic, but has couch potato tendencies. He will do well with an owner that can be firm with him when needed. He is generally well-behaved, knows some commands, and is eager to please (especially when treats are involved!) A fenced yard would be ideal. Merritt. Aussie mix. All puppy. Loves her sister Mercy. Born mid November 2015. She is the life of the party... even when the party is over. Born in the mountains but likes being a city girl. She is not house-trained but she’s pretty sure that’s something you can work on. Loves everyone, and in fact, she loves everything that moves. Healthy as an ox and ready for a new life in 2016! Call ARFP at 336-574-9600 for more information. n

Joni's middle name is PLAY. She loves to chase balls and loves small fuzzy toys. She will get the small toys in her mouth and talk to them. One of Joni’s best traits is that she is a great cuddler. Speaking of talking, her purr is as smooth as her namesake, Joni Mitchell. Joni has been a delightful foster kitten in her foster home. She gets along well with the other cats and dogs and is, for the most part, a team player. Joni was born on 6/18/15 and has been spayed, vaccinated, and is negative for feline diseases. Joni was rescued from a local shelter where she was abandoned. She was very sick when she came to us but is now a thriving kitten. Call ARFP at 336-574-9600 for more information. n

Meet Tyson, Rocky & Ali. Three

Hall. ARFP received the following

little Boxer mixes that have had a very rough start to life. They came to ARFP malnourished, wormy, and anemic. Slowly, each one of these boys got sick from having so many parasites. It’s been a long, hard, scary, road for our little boxer boys but they are on the mend! Little fighters they are! All three would love to meet you!

“Hello, I am sending this in hopes that I can find someone to help. I work in the office at an apartment complex. A previous tenant found out she had cancer. She had to move out and unbeknownst to us, left her cat. It is an indoor cat and now it just sits out by the door of the apartment that she was renting. It is breaking our hearts. Several other residents have been feeding him. They also put a cardboard box with a blanket for him to sleep in. We have tried to get someone to take him with no luck. Could you please give me some suggestions on where I might find him some help? It’s starting to get really cold and I hate to think of him out in the elements.” How could we not help this sweet boy? Hall is approximately 2.5 years old and a neutered male. He is just a big lump of love.

born around 6/1/15. He is a great kitty that someone had to give up due to time restraints. Blayne is neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations. Many people think he has Maine Coon in his bloodlines, as does his vet. He is such a lover of all things. Because he is so large you think he is older than he is but his play proves you wrong. Blayne plays just like a kitten and is so much fun to watch. He loves to chase balls and is very good at finding things to play with on his own. This kitten is looking for a great home!

Mercy me this girl is beautiful! Mercy is an Australian Shepherd mix with more spunk than many! She is a happy girl that is set on go. Mercy was born in November and was bought by a kind woman who thought she could handle two puppies so she not only got Mercy but her sister too. What a handful they were for someone! Both puppies ended up needing a home and have found one in ARFP until they are adopted! Mercy would like to find an active home that has structure and can give her a routine to follow. She is practicing her crate-training and her house-training but she will need someone to keep up that job. Mercy is sweetly entertaining!

Piper

is a spayed female Rottweiler, 65 lbs and about 8 years old. She is very sweet and gets along well with her playmates. Piper received obedience training when she was younger. She gets along well with cats and other dogs and is crate-trained. However, since it has been a while since she has been indoors, a refresher to house manners may be needed. She is currently being fostered by Leatherwood Kennels, as professional trainers, they can assist in proper set up and introduction to her new home. Piper is up-to-date on vaccinations and current on her monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventives. Apply to adopt this sweet girl at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Snowball

was named after one of her foster mom’s favorite music artists, Stevie Nicks. We thought she needed a name fitting to her personality... a little sugar and a little spice. Stevie can certainly hold her own and being blind doesn’t stop her one bit from living a happy and healthy life. She is also very sweet and enjoys the special treats she gets from her foster mom. We think Stevie would enjoy another Gerbil companion to buddy around with but she doesn’t have to have one and it would certainly need to be another girl. Stevie enjoys playing in her cage and getting handled. We do try and keep her cage layout the same from day to day so as not to confuse her or disorientate her.

says Tweet, tweet, tweet... I want to sing for you! This little girl is looking for a forever home where she can sing out her days and learn that humans are great. She has never been mistreated but is young and doesn’t know yet how much fun interacting with humans can be. She has not yet learned how to step up but could probably learn with some time and attention. In the meantime, she loves to listen to you talk and likes to play with the toys in her cage.

If you are interested in giving her a home, please visit our website, www.reddogfarm.com. n

Tilly

Padma

is one special little girl. At about four months of age, she is well socialized with other kitties and you can often find her in a kitty cat cuddle-up with one or more of her friends. She is full of curiosity and loves people as well as other cats. Tilly has been spayed, is up-to-date on all vaccines and has a microchip. She would make a great addition to any family, especially one that might also have another cat or two so she can cuddle and nap with them. Although, we are sure that once she is in her forever home, her new family will get smothered with lots of love, nuzzles and cuddle time. There is just no way to stop a kitty like Tilly from spreading love! If you too have love to give and enjoy a good romp and play time, followed by a good nap, then Tilly is the one for you!

is a small, 6-month old, Tuxedo cat with the cutest little face. She also has the sweetest personality to go with that face. The perfect combination of love muffin and kitten, just try to keep Padma from stealing your heart. She has been spayed, is upto-date on all her vaccines, and has a microchip. All she needs now is to find her pur-fect forever home to complete her wish list. And that shouldn’t take too long with her being sooo cute and friendly. She loves to sit in your lap and soak up all the attention you are willing to give her. Come out and meet Padma. You have nothing to lose and lots and lots of love to gain!

gray Tabby with a white nose, paws and underside. He was found as a stray with a broken femur and now has a pin in his leg and has completed his rehab. This healthy, 9 lb. Tabby is busy making lots of new friends and loves the frequent head rubs offered by all the staff and volunteers at the SPCA center. So used to living on his own and being in pain, Mr. Sloan is optimistic that 2016 is going to be his year! Mr. Sloan is curious and loving and loves attention. If you think Mr. Sloan might be the best friend you’ve been looking for, don’t delay and come out to the SPCA today!

Dolly is a 9-year old, female, English Bulldog Terrier with an all white coat. She is spayed, up-to-date on all her vaccines and has a microchip. Dolly is a loving and friendly dog who adores people. However, she does not like cats at all, nor does she care much for other dogs. Dolly desires and needs to be in a home where she can be top dog. Such a character, everyone is attracted to Dolly. She is sweet, curious, smart and a great bed warmer. Dolly is looking for a best friend. She says she is a great listener and never tells secrets. All she wants in return is comfort, kindness and love. Dolly is in foster care, so if she is the kind of girl you are looking for, please contact the SPCA of the Triad so we can arrange a meet and greet with your new doggy!

Tessa is a beautiful German Shepherd/Appenzell Mountain Dog mix who is about 2 years of age. Her coat is black, tan and white with striking markings. Most interesting of all, she has one brown eye and one crystal blue eye. Tessa was found as a stray. She was so extremely shy and scared that she wouldn’t walk when you tried to walk her on a leash, and kept her tail between her legs and her head barely off the ground. Tessa has come around and is quickly adjusting. She now loves her walks, keeps her head up and her tail is usually wagging. She is very smart and would take to training quickly. If you think you might be the one that can give Tessa a second chance then call us to meet this beauty. Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Peanut

is a 1-year old, Chihuahua Dachshund mix. He has been neutered, is upto-date on all his vaccines and has a microchip. Peanut is not too big and not too little, but just the right size. He is big enough that he loves to go on walks, but small enough he can easily be scooped up into your arms and cuddled. He seems to like everyone but can be a little afraid in new situations. When this happens he puffs up his chest and gives a little growl, but it’s all for show. Once he realizes you are a friend, and he is comfortable, he wants all your attention. He is such a handsome little guy with a great personality and we’re sure you’ll go nuts over him just like we have! Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Jack was purchased, along with his sister, Rose, from a pet store in Orlando FL during a family vacation. Once the family got back home, they realized that they didn’t have time to properly care for the pups so they turned them over to us. Jack is fixed, UTD on shots and on HW preventative. He is very sweet and is learning to use newspapers and to Chihuahua Rescue go outside. He does not have to be adopted with his sister, but that is an option. He is 5 months old and weighs 5 lbs. Jack will need more training (including working on housetraining), once adopted.

Trane

was rescued from a shelter made out of an air conditioning unit. He is shy and reserved at first but once he is comfortable, “Nothing Can Stop A Trane”! We wouldn’t expect anything less from a Lab/Spaniel mix! Adoption fee is $200. All vetting is up-to-date, he’s microchipped, neutered and on flea/tick and heartworm preventative. Visit www.ruffloverescue.com/adopt to make this pup a member of your family. n

is a sweet 6 year old Golden Retriever. This is one big ole’ teddy bear!! Harleey needs to be an only dog. Vetting is up-to-date, he’s microchipped, neutered and on flea/tick and heartworm preventative. Glimmer, 1-1/2 years old,

“Happy,” the hit song by Pharrell Williams could be this pup’s theme song! Meet Cheyenne, or as one of his fosters called him, “Happy Go Lucky!” This spunky boy is an active 8-year-old Golden mix, who has never met a dog Triad Golden Retriever Rescue or human he doesn’t like. He has a special fondness for children and is always ready for a road trip, as he is a great traveling companion. Cheyenne’s activity level is more like a 4 year old than an 8 year old, but he is also always happy to have a good cuddle with his people. He thrives on attention but is happy to toss a tennis ball by himself if he is close to his people. Cheyenne has a sweet and loving personality and knows basic commands. He would be happiest as the only dog or with another balanced dog, and with family members who have time to play with, train and enjoy their new buddy!

was surrendered to a shelter because the owner “had too many dogs and could not take care of her,” and rescue angels delivered her to Elijah’s House. While she is significantly underweight, she’s in good health overall. Probably because of there being too many dogs Doberman Rescue of the Triad and not enough food, she does some food guarding. We’re working with her to make progress in that area. Also, she was known to climb fences, however, with all the room to run and play that she has here (and probably all the love and attention, too), she’s showing no interest in climbing the fence. Glimmer has had little training, yet she does sit very nicely, including when waiting for her food to be prepared. She has a very loving and playful personality and gives lots of kisses. All indications suggest that this is a very lovely little girl who hasn’t had much for advantages so far and who is ready to burst forth, developmentally, as she basks in the love of a proper home

Training Your Pet

Raising Children and Dogs by Jan Wilson, Dog-Gone Fun

W

e have all seen the commercial of a child sitting on the ground covered in puppies licking his face. It paints a heartwarming picture. The success of dogs and children living together peacefully and safely depends on adult supervision and understanding of dog behavior. The adult must teach the child compassion, responsibility and proper behavior around all dogs. The dog must learn canine manners and impulse control. Adult supervision is required for the child to learn appropriate interaction with a dog. Young children should never be left alone with a dog. Most parents recognize this fact. What is not always clear is how closely to supervise, and what are the signs that the dog is stressed and intervention is needed. Leaving a toddler on the floor to climb or fall on the dog while the adult sits in a chair could be dangerous for both the child and dog. Young children need clear guidelines on how to interact with a dog. This may involve manually taking their little fingers and gently rubbing the dog’s fur. It is important to recognize when a dog is stressed, over-stimulated, or in need of a break. Learning your dog’s signs of stress will help avoid mishaps. Dogs may bite when stressed and to protect themselves. Before they bite they will have given multiple signals and facial expressions, indicating their stress level. It is important to read these signals before a dog reacts and to provide the dog an escape. A crate or a room may be used as an escape for the dog, where the child is not allowed to follow. The crate should be off limits to children even when the door is open. There are many wonderful websites out there with videos and pictures clearly explaining when a dog feels uncomfortable. I like the website - livingwithdogsandkids.com. This website has videos and pictures illustrating warning behaviors in dogs. Older children need less hands-on, but still require supervision. Young girls tend to treat a dog as a toy, carrying them around and physically controlling their movements. They sometimes dress them up in clothes. Boys are more boisterous and want to play wrestling games. Wrestling games can be fun for the dog but teaches the dog bad manners and can get out of control quickly. I would like to add a quick note about other people supervising your child and dog. A baby sitter probably is not as familiar with your dog or your child as you are. They will not have the knowledge of dog behavior and may lack attentiveness to dog/child interaction. The dog also may be more apprehensive when you are not around. It is best to keep the dog separated while a sitter is in charge. Now that we have talked about what not to do with your child and dog, let’s talk about some games and interactions that will strengthen their relationship. I know from experience, the one thing that most children have trouble with is giving a dog a treat. Kids have a fear of

44

February 2016 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

being nipped when the dog takes a treat from their hand. This is true especially with puppies. It is common for them to pull their hand away just as the dog is about to take the treat, causing the dog to grab at their hand. By teaching the child to hold the treat in the flat of their hand or the back of their hand and manually practicing with them, they both will be successful. With supervision, games of hide and seek and fetch can be great organized interactions. Children can follow through on simple obedience commands such as sit and down or the touch command. Just don’t expect the dog to mind and respect your child like he does you. Children tend to say the commands over and over until the dog learns to tune them out. It is important that you are there to intervene to make the dog successful and to minimize the regression in training. There are dogs surrendered to shelters and rescues everyday because of mishaps that happen in homes with children. With education, boundaries and supervision these dogs could possibly stay in their homes. Children can benefit from the care and compassion that goes into owning a pet.

Daphne

Daphne is a Border Collie mix who came to us from the Rowan County Shelter. Her time was up, and because of her extremely sweet temperament, the shelter staff could not bring themselves to euthanize her. So she came to The Fort! Daphne is about three years old, smart, eager to please, learns quickly, and wants to play with everyone - both people and canine. She is up-to-date on all vaccines and has been spayed and microchipped.

Susie’s Hope

B

Spreading the message of love, hope, forgiveness and trust…

eaten, burned and left for dead. The headlines were horrific! A young pup was found barely alive in a local Guilford County Park. Miraculously, she had survived for ten days eating garbage and drinking out of puddles.

photography courtesy of Laurie Merritt Photography

Just a few months prior, a young woman was viciously attacked by a neighbor’s tethered, neglected dog she was trying to feed and water. Both woman and dog were scarred emotionally and physically. The outcome was something movies are made from, a message of forgiveness, trust and yes, hope, hope for a better world. In Donna’s own words, she lays out the job she and Susie set out to do, and against major odds they achieved a stunning success. “Our mission is to help end the epidemic of animal abuse that has spread throughout our nation by creating awareness of the problem and by providing education about prevention as a solution. Susie and I have embarked on a personal journey to inform people of all ages about animal abuse and the proper care for our family companions. We encourage people to respect all animals, whether personally owned or a stray, purebred or mixed breed, loved, neglected or abused. We believe that no individual should ever hurt one, or any, of God’s creatures; animals have feelings and experience pain just as we do. We also teach children about the large responsibility and undertaking of adopting or owning a pet as a commitment. Before adopting an animal, the family must be sure that they have enough time, devotion and love to give to their pet and ascertain the pet has the appropriate surroundings/environment that it needs to run and play. We also teach children about staying safe, to avoid injury or unexpected reactions or responses, when they are around animals they do not know. We could not have begun our journey alone and without the devoted help of others; we thank all of the Susie’s Hope supporters who have lent a loving and caring hand to enable us to continue our endeavor.” – Donna Smith Lawrence & Susie

Lucy Lu. Hi there! My name is Lucy Lu. My previous owners got rid of me after I gave them lots of puppies. I am a very sweet and quiet girl. I’m happiest curled up with my person and a nice soft blankie but I am also content to lay in my own bed and nap. I’m really not any trouble at all. I go outside to potty and never bark. I am spayed, so no more babies for me! And I am up-to-date on all vaccines and my teeth have NC Yorkie Rescue recently been cleaned!! Do you have room in your heart and home for a sweet girl like me? Please visit www.ncyorkierescue.net and fill out an Application to Adopt under the “Online Forms” tab. n

Rolley is a handsome adult male current on vaccinations, already neutered and microchipped. Rolley needs a single cat household where he can sleep by a window and soak up the sunshine. His adoption fee is $60.

TICKETS ON SALE AT WWW.REDDOGFARM.COM Susie’s Hope™ is a nonprofit organization working for— rescuing/fostering mistreated animals, educating for responsible pet ownership and fostering awareness of neglect and abuse 1) To lend aid and assistance a) In rescuing and fostering unwanted, neglected and abused animals that are abandoned, homeless and, in worst cases, left for dead; and b) In placing these animals in loving, caring and responsible homes.

*Susie’s Hope is a 501(c)3 Nonprofit founded in 2011

2) To raise awareness surrounding the need to adopt and to encourage pet adoption as the ultimate choice (to help and house the homeless), offer guidance surrounding the adoption processes and our responsibilities to our family companions when we adopt. *Susie’s Hope provides all necessary veterinary care including spay/neuter and microchip prior to pet adoption. 3) To educate the public surrounding the necessity to spay and neuter pets to end euthanasia due to overpopulation. 4) To foster awareness surrounding animal abuse in our nation and to work to end the tragic and growing epidemic throughout our country by a) Educating the public surrounding animal cruelty; and b) Putting an end to inhumane acts of animal abuse by enforcing “Susie’s Law” in all states —to save all animals Susie’s Hope initiative is to become a national charity with a BIG voice on behalf of the animals that cannot speak. In a team effort, Donna Lawrence (Susie’s caregiver) and Susie visit schools (from elementary to college), churches, libraries, retirement and medical facilities, as well as various community outings; they attend pet adoption fairs and fundraisers to motivate and educate people surrounding animal cruelty and the need to rescue unwanted animals through adoption. For more information please contact: Donna Lawrence at: dhaverly@triad.rr.com, or visit their website: susieshope.com. Susie stars in a movie about her journey from near death, to being instrumental in getting a new law passed and now an ambassador for all her fellow creatures. The DVD, Susie’s Hope, is currently available via susieshope.com, walmart.com and is now sold in Walmart stores. The film was awarded the Dove Foundation Family Seal of Approval; a portion of the proceeds go to Susie’s Hope Nonprofit and also go to support other pet companion rescues and charities.
