Chance & Troy Need a Place to Call Home

Chance was found tied to an interstate guard rail. If ever a dog deserved a

second chance, it is our buddy Chance. This handsome hound dog is approximately 5 to 6 years old and still has a lot of pep. Chance is neutered, up-to-date with vaccines & heartworm negative. He’s a good listener, food motivated and easy to train. He is available through the SPCA of the Triad & is being fostered at Dog Days. Chance comes with a 20-day daycare pass to Dog Days where you can meet him today!

Chance Adopt

Troy

Troy is Pit-Lab mix that is estimated to be around a year old. He was just a puppy when he first came to the SPCA of the Triad and found a home pretty quickly. After some time (and some growing) Troy became a little too much for the family and the other dogs in the household. Troy is friendly and loves to play. He has been neutered, is up-to-date with all vaccines and will come with a 20-day daycare pass to Dog Days. Stop by Dog Days today and spend some time with Chance and Troy. You might just find your next four-legged family member!

Training Your Pet

What are the

Canine Good Citizen and S.T.A.R. Puppy Programs? By Ashley Ferris, Pampered Paws Village

CANINE GOOD CITIZEN The American Kennel Club created the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program to demonstrate that all dogs are capable of learning basic manners. CGC is a ten step program designed to reward dogs who have good manners, both at home and in the community. The program also helps with other activities such as agility, tracking, performance events, and working as a therapy dog. Participants in this program will learn how much fun training a dog can be! You will also see the bond between you and your dog grow. Both purebreds and mixed breed dogs of all ages are welcome to do the CGC program. After completion of the program, there is a final test, which must be passed in order to receive a CGC certificate for you and your companion. This certification can also be helpful when renting an apartment or condo. AKC S.T.A.R. PUPPY Ashley Ferris at Pampered Paws Village and Robin Oglesby at Coldwater Canine Academy Training are teaming up to bring you the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program. This is a jump start program designed to get to know your puppy and get started on the right track to become a well-behaved and socialized adult dog. Organized training classes also provide an opportunity for your puppy to socialize with other dogs and humans in a safe environment that helps you learn to better read and communicate with your pup. In AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy classes, major training hurdles are addressed. Some of these include house-training, chewing, jumping, etc. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy training is the first step for your puppy to be able to get its Canine Good Citizen. It is designed for all breeds of puppies under a year old.

THE CANINE GOOD CITIZEN TEST What to look for on the test? S tep 1. Accepting a friendly stranger. Your dog will allow a friendly stranger to approach and speak to you like an everyday situation.

Step 2. Sitting politely for petting. The dog will allow strangers to pet him/her while being out in public. Step 3. Appearance and grooming. The dog will welcome being groomed and examined by a veterinarian, groomer or a friend of the owner. Step 4. Walking on a loose leash. Step 5. Walking through a crowd. Step 6. Commands such as sit, down, and stay. Step 7. Comes when called. Step 8. Reaction to another dog. The dog can behave politely around other dogs. Step 9. Distractions. The dog must demonstrate he/she is confident when faced with common distracting situations. These can include distractions such as joggers, traffic, and loud noise. Step 10. Supervised separation. The dog can be left with a trusted person, if necessary, and will maintain training and good manners. If you are interested in learning more about the Canine Good Citizen and S.T.A.R. Puppy programs, pleae call Ashley Ferris at Pampered Paws Village at 336-560-7701.

Rescue

I’m Popeye, a 10 year old fawn male Pug, but my foster home thinks I look much younger in the face. I guess I am aging well. I was rescued from an NC shelter when my owner decided they could no longer afford a dog. I am good with the other Pugs in rescue, unsure about cats. I must have a fenced yard and be around children over 8 years old. I do have limited vision from PK and need eye drops. I was covered in fleas, so glad they are all gone now. I am neutered, up-to-date on routine shots, microchipped, and heartworm negative. He is fostered in Monroe, NC, adoption fee is 100.00. If this great looking Pug is the one for you please put in your application online at: www.pugrescuenc.org. We’ll review them and pick the best for him. n

Miss Molly is our foster dog. She is a 2-3 year old Black Lab, spayed, UTD on all vaccines including rabies. She’s still learning house manners but knows sit and come. Molly was found at our local Fire Station covered in fleas and VERY skinny. She has had a hard life and according to our vet, never received proper nutrition as a puppy! Molly has had some Love, Groceries, and Vet care. She is on a “No Grain” hard dog food, easily purchased at Humane Society of Randolph County your local Tractor Supply. She is house-trained, leash-trained (a harness or “Gentle Leader” are used) and crate-trained! Molly is loved in her foster home as an indoor pet. Now it’s time for Miss Molly to step out, into her own home. Molly will need gentle, but consistent training from an experienced owner to make the best lifetime match. Molly’s adoption fee is $120. If you are interested in loving this sweetheart, contact us. n

Vet’s Corner Dr. Janet is a native of Puerto Rico and received her B.S. (1982), D.V.M. (1984) and M.S. in Pathology (1984) from Kansas State University (KSU). Upon graduation she worked as a small animal intern at KSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital until she and her family relocated to Raleigh, NC. She worked as a dermatology intern at NCSU-CVM, was a full time associate at Six Forks Animal Hospital in Raleigh until relocating to Greensboro. She worked as a full time associate veterinarian at Cobb Animal Clinic until opening Adams Farm Animal Hospital, P.A. on November 6, 1989. During her 34 years of clinical practice, Dr. Janet has continuously dedicated herself to serving the local veterinary community, serving as a board member of the NCVMA (2001-2010) and as an officer for the Guilford County VMA (2001-2016), and as a clinical investigator for pharmaceutical trials. While she enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine, her main interests are dermatology, internal medicine, preventative medicine, and surgery for both canine and feline patients.

Chocolate Toxicity in Dogs by Janet J. Raczkowski, D.V.M., M.S.

C

hocolate toxicity in dogs is one of the most common toxicities (top 20) treated in Veterinary Medicine. Not surprisingly, incidence rates are higher around certain holidays, such as St. Valentine’s Day, Easter and Halloween, when we tend to buy and give chocolate. Chocolate is a mixture of cocoa beans and butter. It contains theobromines and caffeine, which are chemicals classified as methylxanthines. Unfortunately, dogs are very sensitive to methylxanthines - even a small dose can be potentially fatal. As a species, dogs are more sensitive due to metabolic differences. The formation of unique active metabolites in the system upon ingestion and decreased detoxification enzymes result in a longer half-life (the time it takes for a drug or a compound’s blood level to drop by 50%) in dogs compared to other species. Most of the toxic effects are due to the theobromine compound and not due to the caffeine.

Clinical signs usually occur within 6 to 12 hours of ingestion. Initially, symptoms can include polydipsia (excessive thirst), vomiting, diarrhea, bloating and restlessness. Signs can progress to hyperactivity, hyperthermia (elevated body temperature), coma and death (due to cardiac and/or respiratory failure). The mechanism of action of methylxanthines is to competitively inhibit cellular receptors of adenosine (a chemical that is present in cells) which results in CNS (central nervous system) stimulation and tachycardia (elevated cardiac rate). Although theobromine and caffeine have an LD50 (dose of metabolite at which first deaths would be expected) of 100- 200 mg per kilogram of body weight, clinical signs can be seen at doses well below this dose.

Table 1. Symptoms and Toxicity Mild symptoms (like vomiting and diarrhea) can be seen at 20 mg/kg. Mild to moderate toxicity can result in tachycardia at 20 to 40 mg/kg. Moderate to severe toxicity symptoms are seen at 40 to 60 mg/kg. Severe signs (like coma and death) can be seen at doses over 60 mg/kg. Early treatment includes decontamination procedures such as emesis (induce vomiting) and possibly administration of activated charcoal (to prevent further absorption). Cardiovascular function monitoring (blood pressure, EKG) and beta-blockers (medication to treat tachycardia) may be warranted. Supportive care (intravenous fluids) is also instituted to help improve clearance of the toxic metabolites in the event of moderate to severe toxicity. An interesting fact is that methylxanthines (in particular caffeine) can be resorbed through the urinary bladder wall (once excreted by the kidneys) which can contribute to prolongation of the clinical signs. For this reason, veterinary staff will take extra steps to keep the patient’s urinary bladder empty by frequent walks and/or urinary catheterization. One ounce of baking chocolate can be toxic in a 50 lb dog! If you suspect or know your beloved dog ate your chocolate please seek medical help and contact your veterinarian immediately! It’s very helpful to us to know the type of chocolate and the amount the dog has ingested if possible. The earlier the intervention the better chance your dog will have of a full recovery. Of course the best way to “treat” this toxicity is prevention: if you have a “counter surfer” in your home, make sure to leave your freshly baked chocolate brownies inside the cabinet and ensure to leave the semisweet chocolate chips or the big box of Valentine chocolates out of their reach and in a secure location.

Table 2.

Other factors can also predispose them to this common toxicity: 1. Most dogs do not have an “off ” switch when it comes to eating. The average person (unless you are a “chocoholic” like me) will eat two-three pieces of chocolate or brownies and stop when satisfied. Dogs will likely eat the entire bag or the whole pan of freshly baked brownies we left on the counter to cool down. 2. Dogs are generally smaller than people so they ingest a higher dose on a milligram per pound of body weight basis. This means “small amounts” can actually be a toxic dose. 3. Most dogs will even eat very concentrated forms of chocolate (like baking chocolate or unsweetened cocoa) which people find bitter to the taste. The amount of methylxanthines in chocolate depends and varies by type and manufacturing process. Susceptibility to chocolate toxicoses varies according to a dog’s individual sensitivity and pre-existing health issues. As a general rule, the darker and more bitter the chocolate, the higher the concentration of methylxanthines and the more toxic it could be. In fact, unsweetened baking chocolate contains seven times the concentration of theobromine than milk chocolate. White chocolate is a combination of cocoa butter, sugar, butterfat, milk solids and flavorings without cocoa beans so it contains negligible amounts of methylxanthines.

The SPCA of the Triad is Literally

Adopt Sparta

12

February 2018 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

Success is not what we have achieved, but in whether we have made a difference. I truly believe the SPCA has made a huge difference in the lives of people and animals in Guilford County and surrounding communities.

W

e would like to say a place for everything and everything in its place. However, that is an impossible task at present. We have had to pick and choose which items to stock in the Center. With limited space, we have to be mindful of the varying temperatures in our two outside trailers for storing necessary supplies and food. Storing food and some essential supplies can be quite a challenge. Not only are we out of room for food and supplies, we are mandated by the Department of Agriculture to house only 60 animals: 30 cats and 30 dogs. The SPCA accepts animals from the public, rescues within the Piedmont area from other shelters, takes in abandoned animals left at the SPCA Center, plus works within our rescue community with other 501(c)(3) rescues to transfer animals into specific breed rescues when doing what’s best for that animal is a necessity. Without foster homes and dedicated volunteers to help with our mission, the SPCA would not have been able to place 426 animals into loving homes in 2017. Placing 426 animals into loving, forever homes is not an easy task. First the animal is rescued or surrendered, then comes the necessary testing, vaccines, deworming, flea meds, heartworm prevention or treatment. Then comes the altering of each animal, and sometimes other necessary medical issues have to be addressed. Some animals come in healthy, some come in needing extensive surgery because of years of neglect and abuse. No animal leaves the SPCA without being altered and microchipped. This would not be possible without dedicated staff with knowledge to recognize when an animal is sick, becoming aggressive and needing to be moved to another kennel, and to take care of each animal in a nurturing, consistent manner. This also would not be possible if it were not for dedicated staff going through each application, doing vet checks, making telephone calls, seeing how the people interact with the animal while at the center, and one-on-one with the other animals in the household. It takes knowledge, common sense and dedication to make a great match. Success is not what we have achieved, but in whether we have made a difference. I truly believe the SPCA has made a huge difference in the lives of people and animals in Guilford County and surrounding communities. It is a one-on-one, day-

to day operation where you make the best decisions you know how to make. The quality of success lies in sharing our vision encouraging others and setting an example, giving praise, advice, and credit where it is due. Our vision for 2018 is to have our own land and be able to expand our services to the people and animals in our community. Again, thanks to each of you for your hearts of compassion, your gentle hands and thoughtful, loving words and support for our animal friends. Our work would not be possible without a dedicated staff, a great (working) Board of Directors, our awesome volunteers and giving supporters. We are grateful to each and every one of you who help us help our furry friends. We hope you will continue to be an Angel for the animals in the coming year.

Brookelyn.

At AARF I am known as the Reynolda Road cat. A nice lady found me and brought me to AARF. I am a very laid-back guy who loves to be petted. I love to play with my foster siblings and am fine with dogs. I am up-to-date on shots and tested negative for FIV/FeLV. I would love to be YOUR furbaby. Approximate DOB 5/13/2017.

Hello, my name is Brookelyn. I’m a DSH dilute calico female, born around May 12, 2017. I look very unique because I have an orange stripe right down the middle of my face! My sister, Catalina, and I were born to Vienna who was rescued from a barn and then brought to AARF because our rescuer was severely allergic to us. I’m very outgoing and like being the center of attention. I love toys! My favorite toy is a ball with the jingle bell inside. If you’re interested in me contact my foster mom. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Pepper is a female Rat Terrier/Jack Russell mix found running around neighborhoods. She is estimated to be around 3 years old. She came to us heartworm positive but has been treated and is now healthy and ready for her new forever home! She was definitely someone’s house dog as she makes herself at home and also loves to ride in the car! She is very attached to her humans, so a home where she would be the only pet would be best for her. She has been spayed, up-todate on all vaccinations, heartworm negative and on monthly prevention, and has been Spay Stokes microchipped. HUMANE SOCIETY OF ALAMANCE COUNTY 336.438.2023 / www.hsaconline.org

Helen,

Penelope.

#2538, is an amazing kitten who may be a bit shy and slow to come out of her shell, but once she does, she is an absolute joy! She is not much into cuddling but loves interactive play, especially with laser lights! She does appreciate some petting (especially when a human is attempting to work at their computer) but purrrrfers to play and would love to have another feline companion in the home to run, jump and pounce with.

I am Penelope (#2459), hear me purrrrr! I love being around my people and will be so happy to see you when you come home from work that I will reward you with purring, hoping to entice you to pet and snuggle me. I definitely will want to be in the same room with you, basking in the warmth of the sun shining through a window or in my cat bed with my favorite mouse toy. I love to be brushed and play with toys on strings and would love to have a calm and friendly feline companion to spend the day with.

Jupiter.

Jacques

I am Jupiter (#2553), hear me ROAR!! Actually, it is more of a rumble because I’m always happy! I’m told I am VERY smart and learn things very quickly. Hey! You probably would too if treats were involved! I love to play fetch and tug-ofwar, then take a nice, long nap. I know how to sit and patiently wait for a command and do so with all of my focus on you. Because of my energy, I’d do best with older children and adults but with ongoing training, I’m sure I’d do well with the little ones as well. Hugs and kisses are my favorite things to give! I’d love a forever home with lots of room to run, people to love on and other dogs to play with! Photo courtesy of Angie V Photos.

(#2545) is a sweet and thoughtful boy who is very, very smart and catches on to tricks pretty quickly with his ability to focus. He is housebroken, crate-trained and gets along well with other dogs. Jacques loves to run himself ragged playing in a fenced in yard and follow that up with a nice, long snooze on the couch. He lets you know when visitors are at the door and greets them with playful energy when they come in. He’s done beautifully around children and loves people in general. Jacques has been waiting for his forever home for quite some time and would love to find a family to call his own!

Arabella.

Marissa.

(#2534) Confident, sweet, petite, energetic and independent are a few words that describe Arabella. She’s not fond of being held for long, she has things to do. Whether it’s playing with toys, other pets or exploring her surroundings, she’s busy. She is pretty chatty while you are getting her food ready. When the end of the evening comes, she’s content to curl up on your lap or next to you on the couch, at least for a bit. At bedtime, she’ll cuddle up on the bed but not before a little playtime with your toes. She is dog and cat friendly and will do well in any home, especially if it includes another four-legged companion!

(#2539). Hi, I’m 12 years young and I’m looking for my forever family! Don’t let my age fool you—I still have lots of energy and lots of love to give! I enjoy jogging around the neighborhood with my foster mom so I would do great with an active family and a fenced yard would be FABULOUS as I love to run and play! I do great with my foster siblings, Chihuahua mixes. I haven’t had much interaction with cats but I’m easygoing and smart so could probably learn to love them. My FAVORITE thing is evening cuddle time and belly rubs with my foster parents. I’m crate-trained, leash-trained and house-trained. I’m a Boston Terrier mix and I’m true to that breed so a person experienced with my personality would be great.

Jack, a Jack Russell Terrier mix, was a Christmas present for a one year old child. It wasn’t a good match and he was owner surrendered to ARFP. Bless the owners for realizing this because he is a great puppy. Jack has lots of personality and is very quick to learn. He’s looking for his perfect home. Might be you!

is a gem of a girl! Oh how we love her. Gemma is spayed, loves other dogs, and is not going to be very large. We were told that her mother was a Terrier mix. Dad sure must have been a Shepherd mix, however, Gemma only weighs 13-14 lbs. Who knows? We just know she’s a sweet girl.

If you would like to meet Jack, please call Animal Rescue and Foster Program at 336-574-9600 for more information. n

GUILFORD COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER 336.641.3400 / www.myguilford.com/animal-shelter

Bowie.

Lady. Meet our very own Miss

The Guilford County Animal Shelter has the best pets, hands down and Bowie is no exception. This handsome neutered 2 year old cat is the perfect addition to any family! He loves to play, happily swatting at all of his cat toys, especially ones with feathers. When he’s all tuckered out you will find him resting comfortably in his favorite box. Bowie has been described as more dog than cat, flopping over on his back for belly rubs, holding hands and giving lots of kisses! This handsome fellow really is spectacular and has quickly become a staff and volunteer favorite due to his playful personality and loving demeanor.

Manners, Lady! Lady is a 1 year old spayed female who was adopted from the shelter and then returned because the animal that was already in the home didn’t appreciate sharing its home with another dog. Lady is very excitable while in her kennel, she just can’t wait to get outside and spend time with you!!! Once she is on her leash and outside she walks nicely and is quite calm. Lady is a gentle gal who would love to curl up in your lap, she takes treats gently and gives the best little kisses. Lady has been patiently waiting at the shelter for the perfect forever family since October of 2017.

Bowie is available for adoption and waiting to meet you at The Guilford County Animal Shelter. n

Lady is available for adoption at The Guilford County Animal Shelter and cannot wait to meet you. n

Dove

is a 4-1/2 year old spayed female who was found as a stray. Dove was heartworm positive when she arrived, but has been fully treated by the shelter. Dove is a unique gem, she loves all people she meets and most other dogs and would love to spend her days zooming through your backyard and snuggling up on the couch. While at the shelter, Dove has gone on many adventures. Recently, she went to Ashton Place Health and Rehabilitation where she met all kinds of new people and she did GREAT! She loved seeing the residents and being fawned over with love and affection. She was very gentle with each new person she encountered. Dove is a wonderful dog who deserves a loving forever family. Meet Dove at The Guilford County Animal Shelter. n

Nattie

is a 4 year old spayed female with special needs, but don’t let that deter you. This beautiful baby girl doesn’t let anything slow her down! Nattie came to the shelter unable to bear weight on her back legs and has been diagnosed with a fibrocartilagenous embolism, a spinal abnormality. She has regained much of the strength in her rear end and her ability to walk on her own, however, when she gets excited she tends to swing out her leg and not bear weight on it. Nattie is an excitable young lady who does great when she is out of her kennel and she loves every person she meets. She enjoys treats, toys and spending time with people. Nattie is available for adoption at The Guilford County Animal Shelter. Come meet Nattie today! n

Steven.

If you are looking for the one great love of your life, look no further than Steven, a 2 year old neutered male cat with beautiful long, fluffy grey and white fur. Steven is a go-with-theflow, relaxed and laid-back gentleman who would love nothing more than to find a family with big windows he can gaze out of while day dreaming of all the critters and dust bunnies he is just too lazy to chase. Steven is available for adoption at The Guilford County Animal Shelter. n

Dolly Parton

is a celebrity in our midst! She’s a 3 year old spayed female Pit Bull. Dolly Parton was adopted from the shelter and returned because the other animal in the home did not appreciate sharing its love and attention. Dolly is a playful and sweet girl who enjoys taking walks outside and hopping into any available lap for lots of kisses and snuggles. Dolly Parton is available for adoption at The Guilford County Animal Shelter. Come meet Dolly today! n

Greer was another emaciated cruelty case that came into our medical foster program for weight gain. At 6-years old, Greer is a low key, loving German Shepherd. She lives in a household with other dogs and enjoys playing with her friends. Greer is not a high energy dog, but enjoys human company, walks and love. Greer is Project Pearl currently on a special diet that allows her to maintain her weight and is ready to find her perfect family. Photo courtesy of DesiLu Photography. Please email us at: project pearl@triad.rr.com for more information about Greer. n

Buffy is a lovely, sweet kitty. She was a great mother to four babies, all were adopted. Buffy has been in a room with another great cat, but they are not the best of friends. Given some patience and a little time to adjust, she’ll make a nice addition to a home. She has a little bit of mischief to her nature, but that makes her interesting! She’s been vetted, microchipped and is ready for her new home. Adoption donation is $25 and we will need references from a vet. Purrfect Friends Cat Rescue

Ace

Tiny Ben

is a 9 pound, 5 year old Chihuahua who is just so sweet and friendly! He loves to be held and is definitely a lap baby. Ace is a little shy at first but warms up very quickly into his normal self, a lovely, affectionate little bundle of sugar. He bonds quickly with new people friends. He gets along well with other little dogs and has never been an only dog. He lived with his two 4 year old sons in his old home. Ace is new to toys and leashes but will learn fast. Adoption donation $175.

is a 5 pound, 4 year old Chihuahua who is just so sweet! He loves laps and lots of attention, making friends easily even though he is a tiny bit shy at first. He has never been an only dog and needs a companion pup in his new home. (His adorable brother Bobo is also available for adoption.) He was in a foster home for about a week and they said he was such a doll and loved all the attention from their teenaged children. Toys and leashes are new to Ben but he will learn quickly. Adoption donation $175.

Bobo

Gus

is a 5 pound, 4 year old, brindle colored Chihuahua who is a total baby doll! He is Ben’s brother and would love to be adopted into the same home, if possible. He has never been an only dog and does need a sweet companion in his new home since he gets lonely very easily. Bobo is a professional lap baby and snuggler and definitely likes to stay close. He will thrive in a home in which someone is home much of the time. Toys and leashes are new to Bobo. Adoption donation $175.

is a 9 pound 5 year old Chihuahua who is shy and submissive at first, a little wary of men, but very quickly warms up since he really loves people. He adores women and children. He is a wonderful lap warmer and cuddler. He will bark to announce a new person but then is friendly and welcoming, with none of the snippiness sometimes seen in Chihuahuas. He is mostly house-trained and already crate-trained. He is good with other little dogs and also with cats! Gus loves taking walks and is used to the leash. Gus has a happy, sweet, relatively quiet personality. Adoption donation $175.

Nick

JR

was found wandering down Business-85 on Christmas Day. He looks like an Akita/Husky/Shepherd mix, and came to his rescuer when called, happy to be rescued. He seems to be about 7 years old and is 76 pounds. He is house-trained already, sits on command and also offers a paw on command in trade for a nice treat. Nick is good-natured, easygoing, friendly and confident. He is happy to see a leash and seems to be used to all things related to living a good life in a home. He got along fine with the resident dog in the home of the person who found him roaming on the highway. Adoption donation $150.

is an adorable little guy, 20 pounds of joy, who lost his home when his owner fell on hard times. He is somewhere between 5-8 years old and a perky boy. He has that smart, fun Jack Russell personality but not the hyperness. He is a super loving little dude who makes friends easily. He adores being scrubbed all over and wriggles in goofy delight. He is playful and enjoys toys, but can get protective over his toys so needs an alpha owner who will teach him good toy manners. He is already house-trained. JR is good on the leash and loves going for walks. He will be best as an only dog. Adoption donation $175.

Milton.

This handsome boy came to RDF after his owner sadly passed away in November. Milton is an all round great guy! He is good with other dogs, unfazed by cats, and has also done well around children. Milton enjoys just hanging around the house with his humans and going for walks. He is very well-behaved and a pretty chill dog. After having a fenced back yard to roam in over the past couple of years, Milton’s leash walking skills are not the best but he is working on it! He is also a little overweight, but we are working on trimming him down a bit. This boy will melt your heart with his goofy nature and he just wants to be loved. Milton is ready for his forever home! If interested in adopting him, please apply at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Molly

is a loving (but not needy) Lab mix - at 40 pounds, she’s the perfect size. House-trained and easy to walk, she’s content to snooze but loves to be outside. She should be in a home without cats or small animals because she’s a little too interested in them. Molly is heartworm positive and going through slow kill treatment as she is allergic to the injectable treatment. Molly had a mastectomy and spay surgery and is recovering well! While the surgery was more invasive than planned, we are happy to report her oncology report came back not cancerous! Thank you to the amazing staff at Sedgefield Animal Hospital for taking such great care of her and for the MA cares relief fund for helping with her medical expenses! If interested in giving this baby a forever home, please visit online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Fiona.

This girl has been given a sweet Irish name as she came to RDF while our small animals program coordinator was traveling in Ireland! Fiona is so loving! She loves to cuddle and has a real “motor”. She is also very curious! She gets along with other cats well, especially her sister, Nola! She is already spayed and is ready for her forever home!

is a sweetheart! He is a 4 year old male chinchilla looking for his forever home. He is the sweetest boy ever! He enjoys just lounging on the couch with his foster family at night.

Matilda.

Walter

Sadie

This cute girl came to us through animal control as a stray and after being held at the shelter we were called to bring her into our adoption program. Matilda is a shy girl with humans but loves her 2 pig friends at her foster home. She had no problem settling into her temporary home and making friends but this girl really wants a family of her own. She may be a little depressed after being lost and then never claimed at the overcrowded, noisy shelter. Matilda is approximately 3 years old, healthy and up-to-date on her vaccines. She came to us overweight but with a strict pig-friendly diet she is slimming down with no problem.

is a very sweet mare that is a senior citizen but has tons of love and plenty of spunk to share with a new family. She is approximately 25 years old and has dropped pasterns so she will need to be adopted out as a companion or pasture pet. If you are looking for a sweet lady to hug and squeeze, Sadie enjoys the attention! She was owned by the same gentleman for the past 10 years and had a lovely wooded area to live in but she was tucked way back in the woods. Her last companion left her several years ago so she lived a solitary life but has thrived (after a short adjustment period) to living in a small herd again. Sadie is only around 14.3 hh, is up-todate on her shots and coggins and is ready to have her forever home!

If you would like to give Matilda her forever home please fill out an application to start the process. www.reddogfarm.com. n

O

h to have the life of a pampered pet! We admit we spoil our pets rotten, often more so than ourselves. If you are adopting a new dog or have four legged family members already at home, show them what the lavish life is all about with Paws For Effect Mobile Grooming Spa. This day spa for pets delivers all the luxuries of a full service grooming salon to your front door and it’s all done inside their vans so there is no clean up after! Owner Ashley K. Price has been grooming for twelve years, she opened the mobile salon in 2011. Ashley says “Going Mobile is the best thing I’ve done for my clients. The pets are happier and the service is more convenient for everyone.” The animals groomed in the van enjoy one-on-one services without the sounds of other dogs and cats being kennelled near by. They associate grooming with being at home instead of getting in the car and going away for the day. The grooming appointment takes less time and feels more personal. The team at Paws For Effect is caring and professional. Allison, the bather, specializes in tender loving care and de-shedding. She has been a loyal member of the Paws crew since 2013. Caroline Barker is the full time groomer running the second van Paws For Effect Two. Caroline has 25 years experience. She specializes in breed standard cuts. Caroline began showing and grooming AKC/UKC standard Poodles five years ago, after being mentored by some of the top Standard Poodle breeders in the country. Services offered at Paws For Effect include aromatherapy, massage therapy, hair color, nail pawlish, breed standard and creative clips. Every package comes with shampoo, conditioner, nails clipped and filed, ears cleaned and plucked, and glands checked. Patches loves her and the convenience of having our groomer pull up to the front door is priceless. Always dependable, Ashley and her team go to great lengths to accommodate my schedule.” “This was the first vacation in eight years that I didn’t worry about the constant care of my dog. DAVIDSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER 336.357.0805 / www.co.davidson.nc.us/animalshelter

Fang

is a handsome 3 year old boy looking for a nice home with a sunny window to lounge by and watch the birds. He enjoys a nice head rub and chin scratches but prefers not to be picked up or carried. Fang is already neutered, up-to-date on all of his vaccines, and is microchipped. He gets along great with other cats and his adoption fee is only $50 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. n

Rosalie is a two year old girl who adores attention and loves a good petting. Rosalie is OK with other cats but likes to be the center of attention and prefers to be the queen of the castle. She is spayed, up-to-date on all of her vaccinations, and microchipped. You can make her a part of your family for only $75 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. n

Bocephus.

Sheldon

is an adventure seeker! He is friendly and full of wonder and mischief. He’s an independent cat who prefers to be petted than to be picked up. He is 4 years old but a curious kitten at heart. Sheldon is neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped. His adoption fee is $55 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. n

Fran

would love to be your new best friend. She is sweet, calm, laid-back, and gets along great with most other dogs. An older lady at 7 years old, Fran would be quite content spending the day as a couch potato or warming her belly in the sunshine. Fran is already spayed and up-to-date on all of her vaccines. She is also microchipped and negative for heartworms. Fran’s adoption fee is $50 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. n

Montana.

If you ain’t nothin’ but a hound dog then that’s quite all right with Bocephus! This senior fella is looking for his retirement home. Bocephus is 8-9 years old and although he still enjoys a good romp sniffing for rabbits, he really is a laid-back guy that would enjoy watching TV (especially the hunting shows) while curled up on a soft bed. He is already neutered, up-to-date on all of his vaccines, and he is microchipped. Bocephus is positive for heartworms so his family would need to be sure to complete his treatment with their veterinarian.

Hey you! My bags are packed and I’m ready to go! Montana is my name and anything play is my game! I like all sorts of toys—balls, stuffies, and squeaky ones are the best! No wait... the ones that have treats inside! Yes... those are my favorite! When I’m not playing with toys, I love playing with my doggie friends at the shelter. The nice shelter people got me spayed, fully vaccinated, and microchipped so I’m ready to find a home. They said I’m also positive for those nasty heartworms but have already started helping me kick those to the curb.

His adoption fee is $40 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. n

For only $50, I can make you an awesome companion. n www.triadhappytails.com February 2018

BIRD SEED SALE through 02/28/18 see individual stores for details

Freshest Bird Seed in Town! Bird Food • Bird Feeders • Bird Houses • Bird Baths • Nature Gifts

Hello! I’m Malachi! I’m a 12 year old male in search of a companion. I enjoy spending my time basking in the sunshine dreaming of faraway lands just waiting to be explored. I am quite the connoisseur of fine delicacies, and haven’t the time to waste on anything but fine dining- seafood to be exact. I have developed quite the taste for tuna. My doctor has diagnosed me with FIV, but I have been given a top notch prognosis and do hope that this will not prohibit my perfect partner in finding me. (Check with your veterinarian about FIV-positive cats.) It is my greatest desire to find a comrade who will allow me to move in immediately, and whose home has many windows as I find great pleasure in looking out into the world. If you think we could be the perfect match, please contact my associates at The Guilford County Animal Shelter. They can be reached at (336) 641-3400.

Malachi is sponsored by: Greensboro - Winstead Commons Shopping Ctr - 2920-A Martinsville Rd - 336-282-4458 Winston-Salem - Pavilions Shopping Ctr - 568 Hanes Mall Blvd - 336-774-1906 High Point - Oak Hollow Square Shopping Ctr - 1589 Skeet Club Rd - 336-841-2572
