Letter from the Editors

Welcome to Jennifer Frazier

T

he year is off to a good start! We have added some new advertisers and new distribution points. We are in the process of growing and hope to be adding more pages to our publication soon. Lots of folks have contacted us and would like to have us include animals from their groups or shelters around and outside the Triad. The problem is how to add these pages? Bringing in more advertisers is the only solution. Printing, distribution and operating costs are increasing for us, just like any other business. We encourage anyone with a business or just wanting to help us add more animals, please contact us about advertising or sponsoring an animal. The sponsor ads are very reasonable and give us an opportunity to put in someone who would otherwise be left out. There are shelters in surrounding areas that do not have the funds to hold unwanted animals for long periods of time, we especially

would like to help them. Whether it’s a full page or just one animal, it could make a lifesaving difference. More exciting news is, as soon as we add more space, we are going to add a new feature. This new addition will feature articles about volunteering, fostering and a host of groups who work tirelessly to improve the lives of our animal friends. These groups do not stop with adoptions, many of them work to help with spay/ neuter, building shelters, fences, plus many more projects too numerous to list. We wish to thank our veterinarians, businesses and individual sponsors who have helped so much with our publication. They have made this venture possible. Also, we’d like to thank the people who email, Facebook or say in person, “We love your magazine!”, this means more than you’ll ever know.

Burlington Animal Services

I

n my position with Burlington Animal Services, I interact with the public daily whether by phone, in person or at an off-site event. I am frequently asked the same questions and have found there is a lot of misinformation about who we are and what we do. So, I welcome any opportunity to correct these misunderstandings and educate the community. Burlington Animal Services has been serving the citizens of Alamance County since the mid-1960s and while we have made considerable progress in the world of

animal welfare, much work remains to be accomplished. Our mission is simple---to do what is in the best interest of every animal that comes into our care and control, find new homes for as many as possible, and continue to educate the community about responsible pet ownership. Operated by the City of Burlington, Animal Services is responsible for the operation of the animal shelter, the Pet Adoption Center and the Spay and Neuter Clinic of Alamance County. The shelter, located at 215 Stone Quarry Road in Haw River, was built around 1965 and still serves as our intake and holding facility. Animal Control also operates from the shelter. The animal control officers (two cover the city limits of Burlington and four from the Alamance County Sheriff’s Department cover the rest of Alamance County) are responsible for investigating animal related issues and enforcing animal

related laws and ordinances. They handle everything from nuisance calls and picking up stray animals, to investigating bite cases, cruelty and abuse, and dog fighting. Animal control officers really do see the good, the bad, the sad and the ugly! All animals enter the system at the shelter, regardless of whether an animal control officer brings it in or whether you bring it in. It is here that we house stray and surrendered animals, and return as many lost animals to their owners as possible. Like most shelters, no two days are alike, but one thing never seems to change. The constant stream of animals coming through our doors never stops! Most have no identification to contact their owners and have not been spayed or neutered. Many people never think to check the shelter for their missing pets! I find there are many incorrect assumptions about our holding times and how decisions are made, so I will try to shed some light. By law, we are required to hold strays for 3 business days and this does not include the day it comes in, weekends or holidays. Many times animals are here for a week or longer! If no one reclaims the animal at the end of Ad op the holding period, then it te becomes the property of d! Animal Services. By law we are required to hold bite cases (animals that have bitten another animal or person) for 10 days for observation. Animals involved in court cases must be held until the case is resolved which can be months. So, as you may see, space is always an issue! Lastly, we are not required

Cover Story To adopt your next best friend, please contact:

Burlington Pet Adoption Center 336.578.0343 • www.BurlingtonNC.gov/pets to hold owner surrendered animals for any length of time. We encourage owners to exhaust every means of re-homing their pets (family, friend, ad in the paper, etc.) before surrendering. We are very clear that there is a possibility their pet could be euthanized based on available space. Once an animal becomes ours, we make the decision about putting it up for adoption, or not. Please understand this decision is not made lightly! We evaluate the animal’s health and behavior, but truthfully, many animals that come here are not healthy or they may have behavior issues that preclude them from being a candidate for adoption. If we decide a dog or cat will go up for adoption, we vaccinate and spay or neuter them first. After a brief recuperation, they go into the adoption center and stay there until they are adopted! The Pet Adoption Center opened in 2004 thanks to the generous efforts of several benefactors and supporters in Alamance County. This user-friendly facility can house as many as 40 dogs and 25-30 cats. We adopt dogs for $80 and cats for $60. The fee covers the spay/neuter surgery, basic vaccinations and a one-year rabies vaccine. The addition of this building certainly helped ease the overcrowding in the shelter and increase our adoption numbers. However, our intake of animals continues to be more than we can find homes for. In other words, we cannot adopt our way out of the pet overpopulation problem that exists in our community. Sadly, we still have to euthanize a large percentage of animals that come to the shelter. The root of this problem lies in irresponsible pet ownership. Too many unaltered pets are allowed to reproduce repeatedly, as well as roam free, leading to hundreds of unwanted litters. When asked if

we are a no-kill shelter, I want to reply, “No-kill begins with no birth!” Plain and simple, spaying and neutering is the most effective means to reducing unwanted litters. With the generous help of supporters, we opened the Spay & Neuter Clinic of Alamance County in March 2010 with the sole purpose of reducing the number of unwanted animals that come to the shelter each year. The clinic, located at 1919 South Church St. in Burlington, is open to the public and is a low-cost alternative to a full service veterinary hospital. We only spay and neuter dogs and cats at this facility and do not offer any other services. The good news? We are seeing a decrease in the number of animals coming into the shelter and a decrease in the number being euthanized. Is it due entirely to the addition of the Spay & Neuter Clinic? Of course not, but it is making a difference. If you have not spayed or neutered your pet, consider these facts. Altered pets exhibit fewer problems with Butch, 5 years old, playing a game of Fetch. Meet Bad Boy Kent...and we say that with lots of affection. Kent was rescued by a very nice lady who proceeded to name him after her ex-husband...not sure what that was all about. She could not keep him in her apartment so she sought out ARFP. Here are the things that make us love Kent so much, and you will too, he is inquisitive, nosey, smart, beautiful, cute, and very entertaining. Kent is always into something but admits to nothing! Ever had a kid like that? That’s our bad boy Kent. Kent loves other cats and would prefer a home with a feline companion to play with. Kent will soon be approaching a birthday on May 15th and is wishing for a forever home to celebrate being a two year old!

Born on 3/23/11, Loki is sometimes referred to as the goodwill ambassador of our adoption center. He LOVES other cats. Loki is happiest jumping and running after balls or chasing a laser light. He is capable of entertaining himself for hours. Loki really wants to be with people and would also gladly sit in your lap all day while you watch TV or surf the internet. Loki loves belly rubs and chin scratches. Loki is a gentleman, a flirt, and an all round good companion. His first birthday is right around the corner and you guessed it! A forever home is at the top of his list!

this little girl you think she has never ending energy. Then you get her home and she is a couch potato. Jackie is our precious small Terrier mix. She is very sweet and needs a lap to call her own. She loves to run and jump and romp around but afterwards is content to rest by your side for some nap time. Jackie was found by two very nice ladies running loose on a busy street. How anyone could let this little girl out of their site is unthinkable. She never meets a stranger and will give you endless love. Jackie comes house trained, crate trained, and is ready to give an abundance of love to her peeps. Her birthdate is 11/2/2009. F

Food Allergies in Dogs and Cats

ood allergy (hypersensitivity or food intolerance) is a common skin disorder in dogs and cats that is caused by an allergic reaction to food. The component of the food that the animal reacts to is the protein. Most common proteins include beef, chicken, fish, egg, dairy, soy, corn, wheat and rice. However, there is also concern with other components of diets including preservatives, additives and dyes. Because this is an acquired disease, the animal often has been fed the food for months and even years prior to the onset of the allergy. The most common signs of food allergy are non-seasonal itching, licking and chewing. In dogs, the itch tends to be generalized, but the ears, face, feet and rear may be more severely affected. Some dogs may exhibit signs of recurrent ear and skin infections as the only manifestation of food allergy. Food allergy in cats usually affects the face and neck, and the itch may be so severe that the animal scratches itself until it bleeds or there is significant hair loss. Up to 35% of animals with food allergies have accompanying gastrointestinal signs (vomiting, diarrhea, soft or mucousy bowel movements). In both species, the disease may be poorly responsive to steroids (prednisone). The majority of dogs and cats with food allergies manifest clinical signs at a very young (less than one year of age) and extremely old age. However, the problem may occur at any age. The diagnosis of food allergy involves a food elimination trial. There is currently no other accurate test to determine if your pet has a food allergy. The blood testing for food allergies offered by several independent laboratories across the country provide too many false positive and false negative results. It is believed that animals may react to allergens in their food for up to six weeks or more; therefore a restrictive diet must be given for up to 6 - 8 weeks. Because food allergy is an acquired disease (a food component becomes allergenic after being fed), only foods that the animal has never eaten before may be used. One protein source and one carbohydrate source are chosen, and all other foods are discontinued. It is important to be complete when relating your animal’s diet history so that an appropriate diet may be chosen for your pet. Most common limited ingredient diets available for food trials include venison and potato or sweet potato, duck and potato or sweet potato, kangaroo and oat, fish and potato or sweet potato, rabbit and potato. Many of these diets are prescription diets which can be purchased through your primary veterinarian or dermatologist. During a food trial, the prescribed diet is fed exclusively for the period of time recommended by a veterinary dermatologist or your primary veterinarian. Treats, rawhide chews, dog biscuits, pig’s ears, chew hooves, chewable vitamins, food supplements, or unapproved medications (including chewable heartworm and chewable flea preventions) may not be given. Your dermatologist or primary veterinarian may change your pet’s heartworm preventative to a non-flavored liquid for the duration of the trial period. Components of the trial diet may be used to administer medications. You may not use cheese, hot dogs, bread, peanut butter, etc., to disguise medication during the diet trial. Treats must consist of the same ingredients used in the diet trial. Example: Serenegy offers potato, duck and potato

and oats treats which are all natural and human grade ingredients. Outdoor cats must be kept away from other food sources to have a successful food trial. It may be necessary to confine them indoors for the duration of the trial. Please exercise caution if you have other pets and make certain that the pet on the trial diet never gets an opportunity to eat any of the other animal’s food (or even lick their bowl!). One morsel of another type of food has the potential to invalidate the entire elimination diet trial and could necessitate commencement of a different diet for 6 – 8 weeks. If necessary, other animals in the household could also be fed the elimination diet. Inform everyone in the household, the bank teller or gas station attendant, etc. that your pet is on a special diet. It is important to be diligent when your pet is on walks to ensure that ingestion of foodstuffs does not occur. Simply changing the brand of dog food (even to diets described as “hypoallergenic”) is not equivalent to an elimination diet. Most dog foods share similar protein, grain meal, preservatives, and/or dye sources. Your primary veterinarian or dermatologist will recommend a restricted or hydrolyzed protein diet. Switch gradually to the new diet over a period of four days by giving each diet 50/50. At the end of the 4-day transition period, feed only the new diet. Some animals may have loose stools while receiving the trial diet. Your pet may develop vomiting, diarrhea, constipation or may refuse to eat the new diet. Cats may begin to develop a serious liver disease if they do not eat for two days or more. Do not allow your cat to go without eating for more than two – three days. Consult with your primary veterinarian or dermatologist if any of the other problems occur before giving up or changing the diet. It is advisable to keep a daily diary during the trial so that progress may be monitored. SUMMARY: 1. Various foods, food preservatives and additives, when ingested may cause itchy skin disease and/or intestinal disease in certain animals. 2. This is an acquired disease and frequently the animal may have been ingesting the allergic food for months to years before any problems arise. 3. There is currently no accurate blood or skin test to tell if your pet has a food allergy. The only method is by avoidance and challenge.

Jackie is a 5 year old cat that is declawed. Sadly, her owner had to surrender Jackie and their other cat, Patty Puss. She is just as sweet and affectionate as she can be. The hair on the base of her tail goes all “spikey”, when you pet her. She’ll also beg for attention, if you dare ignore her. Call 378-0878 if you are interested in adopting Jackie. n

rescued along with his siblings, Kelsey and Mica. He is the most cautious kitten of the litter, a little on the shy side. He’s only 2 months old, so he has plenty of time to become the confident kitten that we know he will be. This handsome boy just needs some special love and cuddling. Call 378-0878 if you are interested in adopting Chai. n

Patty Puss and her “sister” lost their home due to financial issues. She was very traumatized by the loss of her family, but she is slowly relaxing. Her giant yellow eyes are amazing. She is all about being rubbed and held, which makes her feel safe and happy. She needs a quiet, patient adopter that will give her time to be herself again. Patty is declawed like her “sister” Jackie. Photos don’t do justice to this beautiful 5 year old black and white cat. Call 378-0878 if you are interested in adopting Patty Puss. n

Batman is a unique

Selene

little kitten—he is not a caped crusader at all, but just a sweet boy with vision issues. While he is certainly not “blind as a bat,” he is somewhat visually impaired because of scarring on his corneas from an untreated upper respiratory infection before he came to NC CAT. He sees well enough to play, snuggle and run around the house with his foster brothers and sisters, and he doesn’t realize he is different! If you can help this little guy navigate his way through life, you will be rewarded with love, purring and the knowledge that you truly saved a life.

is a Mau mix cat whose fur makes you think of silvery moon beams shining through the fog. Selene means “goddess of the moon” and that fits her well. Like her breed, she is reserved in meeting strangers, but will bond with one person and be very loyal. Calm and serene, Selene wants a person to adore her and give her the home she deserves.

Smitten

Stella came to Red Dog

came to Red Dog Farm after being found as a stray by a local humanitarian. She’s a sweet girl and a typical kitten. She loves to play and needs a family willing to let her be a kitten. She’s been vaccinated and will be spayed and microchipped shortly. In the meantime, she is enjoying socializing with the other cats and her kid brother. Smitten has an adorable meow and will talk to you occasionally. We are still getting to know her and will update her bio as we get to know her better.

Farm Animal Rescue Network when her owners discovered they could no longer keep her. Stella is great with kids, cats, dogs, and adults. Stella has yet to meet a stranger and would make a fantastic addition to any home. She is crate trained and appears to be house broken. Stella was very excited to see new people. She walks fairly well on a leash but needs a reminder every so often not to pull as she is still a puppy. Stella is about 45 pounds, vaccinated, spayed, and Microchipped and is ready to go to her new home.

In the meantime, please visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information and to fill out an adoption application! n

Patti is a BIG potbel-

BooBoo came to Red Dog Farm after his owners could no longer care for him. It had been awhile since his last grooming and his hair was severely matted so Boo Boo had to be shaved all over! However, he asks that you not judge a book by its cover and realize what a beautiful coat he will have once his hair grows back out. In the meantime, he loves to wear a coat to keep him warm and we think it just shows off his SMILE a little easier. Yes, Boo Boo smiles when he sees someone he likes! He’s house broken and crate trained and has been neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated, so he is ready to go to his new home.

lied pig who was surrendered when her owner could no longer afford her. She lived inside for the first year of her life and has been an outdoor pig for the last two years. Patti is very tame and social and enjoys treats and having her ears scratched. She weighs about 200 pounds and needs a safe, enclosed area where she can exercise as well as shelter in the form of a stall or run-in shed where she can stay out of the rain and wind. Pet pigs often live to be 12 to 15 years old, so Patti needs someone willing to make a long term commitment to her care.

Blizzard is a typical bunny in that if he gets startled he may nip out of fright. However, this handsome boy has been neutered and almost turns into putty in his foster mom's hands. Pete "Sweet Old Pete" came to us from the Guilford County prison farm, where he had been housed by the county because he had been abandoned. Pete was a stallion when abandoned but has now been gelded. Sweet Old Pete went to college last fall with Salem College Equestrian Team and now he would be perfect for someone who wanted a nice, safe, slow trail horse or a walk/trot show horse. He also stands nicely in cross ties, a wash stall, etc. We have continued his training and think this boy is ready to go to his forever home. Holly is a 3 month old Collie/

336.375.3222 www.triadspca.org

Juliet is a staff favorite,

Husky puppy who “adopted us”. We found her and 2 siblings under our building, huddling together for warmth. After team work and food bribing, we got them to crawl out from under the building and into our hearts. Holly is such a sweet and inquisitive girl. She is all puppy, climbing into places she should not be and (sometimes) eating things she should not eat. This girl will need your constant supervision. She is a total love at night, cuddling up for some end of the day kisses. Holly gets along well with all other animals.

and as much as we would like for her to stay, it is time for her to go home. She is a playful and sweet 5 month old Bulldog/Labrador. Juliet loves attention and will only run ahead about 5 steps before she turns around to look at you as if to say- “OK, just making sure you are still there!” She loves, loves all people and wants nothing more than a person to call her own. She is great with children, however, it needs to be known that she will one day be a very big girl so she will need training to learn not to jump up and knock little ones down. Juliet is very intelligent and learns quickly. She gives great kisses.

Love Bug is an 18 month old Chihuahua looking for her forever home. She and her parents were brought to us by a backyard breeder who knew they deserved a better life. The two parents have found a home, but because Love Bug came to us with a traumatic injury she has had a harder time. Her loss has not changed anything about her. She is playful, rambunctious and even a little mischievous at times. She will give you kisses until you can’t stand it anymore. She loves going on hikes, and can even out-run her foster siblings (a lab and a boxer). Love Bug has flourished in her foster home, and we would like for her to go somewhere with similar activity levels. She needs to go to an outdoorsy family, preferably with other dogs. Could you be her new jogging buddy?

a 12 week old puppy rescued from the woods along with her mom and siblings. She is the most outgoing of the bunch, never shying away from love and attention. Olivia loves to play and run, and absolutely loves being outside. She will need to go to a home with a big backyard and a family who loves to take walks. Olivia really enjoys the company of other animals, so we would prefer her go to a home where she will have doggy siblings. Olivia will need puppy training, so please be prepared for that expense up front. This little girl would make an amazing addition to any family!

Mamma is a 1 year old tabby girl. She is so loving with people, but absolutely cannot go to a home with other energetic animals. Mamma is very quiet and prefers a low-key living environment. She would make a wonderful apartment companion and has proven to be great at lap-warming. Mamma gives nuzzles and kisses and is hoping you will take her out of the shelter where she is stressed out, and into your home so she can relax.

kitten with boundless energy. He is very curious and playful, pouncing on other kitties and rolling around with them on the floor. He loves attention from people, but is not a cuddler yet. He is too busy exploring every sound and smell to sit for too long in any lap. This little guy was found in an abandoned pet store in Virginia, cold and alone. Luckily, he is now in a warm foster home, waiting for his forever family to come along, Sir Purr is very smart- he has already figured out that he only needs to scratch his kitty tree or his scratching post! My name is Meeka. I am a long-hair solid white kitty with gold eyes. I get along great with other cats, but I am a little shy of people. If someone very patient would give me a loving home, I think I could become a real lap kitty. I would love to be adopted with my brother, Snowball.

Frick and Frack. Who remembers the 1980’s rockabilly band, Stray Cats? Stray Cat Strut peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot Photo courtesy of Ellen Henson, Project Pearl 100 and now brothers’ Frick and Frack are remaking the classic with their newly formed band, Stray Cat Love! Frick (right) and Frack (left) are DLH brothers that were found together as strays. Although music is their true passion, these boys also love watching TV classics and have recently picked up mini golf. Although a BOGO isn’t available on these two, the excitement of adopting two will beat any great sale! Call 703-3647 to find out how you can take these awesome stray cats home! She’ll Photo courtesy of Ellen Henson, Project Pearl wow you with her pirouettes and side leaps. “She’s amazing how she can leap across the floor all with such grace”, says Smokie, a friend of hers that is also in cat adoption. Don’t worry Marie does not need any dancewear for her performances. The only thing she needs is an indoor home to practice. Twirl to FCAC and check this cat out! Call 703-3647 for more information. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it number 490 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs Photo courtesy of, Lauren Clark at Andrea Halsey Photography &, Project Pearl of All Time! Langley. This big loveable teddy bear is as friendly and gentle as they come. In fact, Langley is a favorite of the shelter’s cat caregivers. While mature at 9 years of age, he has the playfulness of a much younger cat and many more years of companionship to offer. Langley is also one of those rare cats that like their tummies rubbed. Our big fellow has already been neutered and is ready to lavish a new family with unconditional love and affection. If enjoying the company of this wonderful “gentle giant” intrigues you, please consider welcoming Langley into your heart and home. You may visit Langley at the Guilford County Animal Shelter, his ID is #00681442. Langley is sponsored by Richard Partridge in honor of his own big, mature and affectionate cat, Diego.

What ever happened to D.B. Cooper? If you are wondering, he’s been hanging out at the Guilford County Animal Shelter. Cooper has been living at the shelter for over a year and now it’s time to move on. He’s a shepherd mix a little over 1 year old. This is a great dog, sweet and plays well with other dogs. Cooper is altered and could go home today. Please someone get him out! A year is a very long time, he has paid his debt.

Merrybelle. Being a mom sure is a tiring business! I went into labor around 11:40 pm on New Year’s Eve. My seven healthy pups — one male and six females — were Carolina Basset Hound Rescue’s first Carolina Basset intakes of 2012! I was found wanderHound Rescue ing around Winston-Salem loose and pregnant, and the kind folks at Forsyth County Shelter got me started on my road to a warm bed, good food, and a healthy life for my babies. I really can’t remember who dad was — he was just a love ‘em and leave ‘em type of guy, I guess. But whether my New Year’s babies are bassets or mixes, they’re safe with CBHR, and in a little while they’ll be ready for their own forever homes. If you’d like to inquire about Merrybelle and her 7 pups, or CBHR’s other adoptable bassets, contact rgering@triad.rr.com. n

Spot. Meet Spot. He’s 5 years old and crate, leash and house trained and gets along with submissive dogs and seems to prefer male dogs over females. He does have a few “jumping beans” so younger children would not be the best fit for Spot. Spot must have a firm voice and strong leadership at all times so his place in the pack is understood always. Boston Terrier Rescue He loves to strut through the house with his blankie trailing behind him! He also of NC loves to give kisses and play with any kind of toy. Spot likes to snuggle with his people in the big bed before he gets into his crate for the night. been found as a stray. It is apparent that she had been used for breeding and was then perhaps discarded. The thing that amazes me so often with a Dober like this who has probably had very little loving attention, is that she has the most delightful, Doberman Rescue sweet, humble, appreciative dispoof the Triad sition. It’s almost as though, having had it so poorly previously, it has brought out the very best qualities with the result that she’s just about as nice a girl as a person could want to meet. One of her most endearing features is the high-speed tail wag that she offers with the slightest encouragement. This lovely young lady is just plain eager to please, obedient, cheerful, and so very sweet.

Rudy, 1-1/2 years old, is a happy, friendly, and energetic dog who loves people and other dogs. He would do well in a family with older children. He still has a lot of puppy exuberance, so he will need a family who can give him structure, affection, and lots of exercise. He’s Triad Golden already had some obedience training and Retriever Rescue knows a few basic commands but will need consistent reinforcement. He is housebroken and crate trained. More than anything else, Rudy needs another dog in the family with whom to romp and play. Without one, he has been known to climb the fence and go looking for a playmate. So, here is Rudy’s wish list: a doggie playmate, a very TALL fence or someone who likes LONG walks, children to snuggle with, lots of structure, exercise, and love.

Abby was an owner surrender to the Dare County Animal Shelter back in the beginning of 2011. A very sweet, soft-eared, 90 pound, 6 year old sable girl, she is good with dogs, cats and older kids. Abby knows her basic commands, is house and crate trained and with the help of a Gentle Leader, does well on leash. She loves to go for walks, car rides and getting German Shepherd Rescue & Adoptions brushed. Definitely not a “beginner dog”, Abby is a typical GSD who needs a calm assertive environment and people with good dog leadership skills. A little polishing and this very intelligent girl will be a sparkling treasure for some lucky family or person. Visit www.gsdrescue.org for more information. n

I am a good girl, housebroken, and crate trained and I love to sleep in bed with my human, usually under the covers. As you can see, I am wearing my princess costume cause I am a little princess. Will you be my knight in shining armor and give me my happily ever after? For more details on Millie, contact rochelle@rescueminpins.com. n

Miracles at Work Rescue

is a Wonderful girl who had a very unstable beginning, but now enjoys Lots of Love, Hugs and Kisses! Malcom’s Manor

Very handsome and sweet 3-4 year old neutered male. Rescued from a kill shelter after being picked up by Animal Control and then contracted a severe respiratory infection from which he almost didn’t recover from. He is extremely gentle and friendly and deserves a home he can be the center of attention. He is UTD on shots and FIV/Felv negative. His adoption fee is $50.

Please call Gail at Miracles at Work Rescue at 336-708-0343 or call 336-294-2833. n

Riley & Bailey. We’re two lovable brothers, 10 years old and up to date on shots, are neutered, and microchipped. We have lived together our whole lives, separate foster homes did not work, so we are back together and so very happy. Our foster mom promises us that we can stay together and she will find a loving family that wants a pair. IF you are that family that knows you can’t have just one then please consider adopting a wonderful bonded pair, we get real Pug Rescue of NC depressed without each other. Our adoption fee is waived for a small donation to help Pug Rescue.

Gipper. (NCSR #322) is a 6 year old male Schnauzer whose owner recently died and the family was not able to keep him. He’s a gorgeous 18 pound silver with perky natural ears. He is housebroken, neutered and is excellent on a leash! Gipper NC Schnauzer Rescue loves to go for walks, car rides and loves playing a game of tug-of-war but what he enjoys most is to lie at your feet and be petted. Overall he is good with other dogs, but bigger dogs that are playful or rambunctious can make him grumpy. He is okay with cats, but does like to chase them a little if they run or jump. Gipper has well managed seizures which are successfully controlled with medications (about $30/month). Just drop the pills in his food. His foster home has not seen any seizures for months.

O

The Miracle of Hope

ne hot sweltering August day, some sort of animal was spotted wandering down a busy highway in a rural South Carolina town. When the animal control officer approached the animal, he discovered the animal was indeed a dog. He couldn’t believe it. What kind of owner allows their dog to get in this sort of shape? The dog was loaded into a cage and was taken to Animal Control. Behind the scenes, several rescues were working to pull the 23 miniature schnauzers that were turned in by their breeder the same day. When no other rescue stepped up for the 23 schnauzers, we did. By then, Animal Control had dumped this stray dog in with the 23 schnauzers in hopes a rescue would also pull her. There was no turning back when one of my rescue friends went to assess the situation with all of the schnauzers. She brought all of them home with her, including the stray dog. Normally, we would be unable to take in so many dogs at one time, but we were blessed. We had folks begging to foster. We spent the better part of the night trying to organize who was who, and the medical needs of each dog. And then there was this dog… this little dog that I kept looking at, trying to make sense of her condition, and why she was the only one who looked this way. We started naming the other dogs… some were named after cars, actors, actresses, and people who had influenced us in our lifetime. And then there was this little dog still waiting on a name. We brought the little dog home and began removing mats from his coat (at this point, I had no idea the sex of this dog). The first night I spent three hours trying to make a “dent” in his coat. The second night I spent two hours. I was getting nowhere and needed help. My best friend offered to help and said, “How bad can this possibly be?” Well, she learned, when we started making just a little progress, that we needed professionals! The following day was a Monday and I called my vet. We took the little dog on to the vet, and no one could actually believe there was a dog under all of that hair. The hair was so long it wrapped around her legs like hard casts. It was nothing short of pitiful. She weighed in at 27 lbs., but after a total of 29 hours of grooming, we had ourselves a 14 pound little GIRL, and we would call her HOPE! After the shave down, 3 blades later and a bunch of tests – Hope was given a full check up. She was given all of her shots, sadly she tested positive for heartworms. Heartworms? She could overcome that… as long as she had the will to live, and she did! Hope, before she was groomed for Hope had full sponsorship the first time.

by Lora Younts. Anything Hope needed, Hope got. Most of all, she received more love and attention than most dogs do in a lifetime. Hope spent six months in foster care. Getting stronger and gaining weight with each passing day. Her goal weight was 21 lbs., which would enable her to start her treatment of the heartworms. By mid October, Hope started heartworm treatment and by December she had a clean bill of health, was up to 27 lbs. and ready for her forever home. We were on the fence about giving her up to a true forever home, or keeping her forever at ours. We got through Christmas and New Years and decided that after the first of the year we would list her at www.petfinder.com. We received an overwhelming response on her pictures and on her story, but nothing jived. Most people wanted to adopt her because of her story, but not because of Hope! Several weeks Top photo: Connie Davidson later, I received another inquiry. This and Hope; Bottom photo: one was different than all the others. This one was the ONE! A new family Lora Younts and Hope. for Hope! I spoke with the soon-to-be new family over the phone several times. We talked about every detail of Hope so they knew exactly what kind of dog they would be adopting. I thought maybe something I would say would scare them off, but it didn’t. They wanted Hope and Hope wanted a new family! This family was it! George and Connie Davidson of Bolivia NC (near Holden Beach, NC) arrived to pick up Hope on the Tuesday before Valentine’s Day. Lora, Hope’s supporting angel, could not make the big event, so I was the only one to go. We met at a local art gallery and it was love at first sight. I don’t know who was more thrilled, Hope or the Davidsons. We said our goodbyes, a few tears and several big hugs later, Hope climbed up in her new car to head back to the coast. This year it will be three years since Hope’s adoption. Hope has grown up and out so much since her adoption. She is the love of the Davidsons’ lives and everyone who meets her cannot believe that she is the same dog as in the pictures. Hope spends her days wherever her mom and dad are. We see Hope pretty regularly now as we visit the coast. She is a huge Mom’s girl and loves to take walks with her Dad! What more could Hope ask for?

Training Your Pet

No! Is That an Acceptable Answer? Just recently, I was in Walmart doing some shopping, and just happened to notice a lady and her son that were in every isle in the store, at the same time I was. You know how it is, it seems every place you go, they are as well. You speak cordially, they speak back, and they become inadvertently your “shopping partner”. Her son was bright eyed to say the least, and into everything. This kid reminded me of myself when I was his age. Also, I noticed every time he got into mischief, the mother would give him the proverbial, “I’m not going to tell you again to stop it!” This must have happened 15 or 20 times, and every time her son would call the bluff. How many times have you done this with your dog? Accepted “No” for an answer, and did nothing to correct it? This has to be, in my opinion, one of the single biggest problems that people have with their dogs. People who own dogs generally want to be the dog’s leader, really and truly, but don’t assert their authority as the rule of the house. Another example is someone at the vet in the waiting area telling their dog to sit or be quiet, well over 20 times in as many seconds and yet the dog does not sit, and still continues to bark.

So how do we stop this vicious crazy cycle? Here are some steps to put in place that will help. 1. Many people assume that from the first days of puppyhood all dogs understand us, the way we understand each other. We rationalize right from wrong, and just assume that they should be able to do the same. WELL, how many times have you over heard people talking about a person from another country, saying something to the affect of “This is America, they should learn to speak English!” While I agree with this sentiment somewhat (not going to get into a political discussion here), the person must FIRST

42

By Adam Witherspoon - Training Director and Adam Diederich - Assistant Trainer Shiloh K-9 Dog Training Services LLC

BE TAUGHT ENGLISH BEFORE THEY CAN SPEAK IT! Your dog must also be taught how to communicate with you, and to teach your dog, you must learn how they communicate. To sum it up, body language and voice tone are paramount, but ultimately their language is leadership. As a leader you must establish the rules and enforce them. “Enforce” seems like a harsh word to some. However, it only means to not stray from what has been established as rule of law. You cannot however, sit there and go over a list with the dog of his do’s and don’ts. This must be demonstrated in a manner the dog can understand. So step one has to be accepting that you can’t explain the rules to a dog the same as you would a kindergarten student. 2. Rule out “No” as an acceptable response. This will mean persistence and consistency. It may take you 10 minutes to get one point across. For example if a dog will not stop barking at the door, or a runner travelling briskly down the street, you must put a leash on the dog, (another presumed headache, which is not if you do it consistently for a short time period) and do anything reasonable to stop that dog from barking. Use a squirt bottle. Walk the dog away from the source of the excitement. DO NOT call the dogs name and tell them to be quiet. If they won’t stop, they don’t know the meaning of these words. Do not use their name, as the dog will associate positive things with their name, and only take it as affirmation. I challenge anyone who can and will do it, to use only a leash in correcting their dog and not talk to them. Watch the results. I do it during consultations all the time, and people sit on the sofa in my training center with their jaws dropped to the floor. I am not doing anything special, just not talking to the dog. 3. Refer to my article on dog behavioral fitness, and pick one thing, JUST ONE to work on and do this until it is fixed. Get simple, and get stubborn. Do not lose or take “No” for an answer. Do not however try to fix the barking and jumping, and nipping at the same time. Address these one

February 2012 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

at a time and it will be easier as you go. 4. Understand all dogs are different and what you did with your Golden Retriever 15 years ago, may not work with your Yorkie today. Also remember your life has changed since your last dog, ie., schedule, commitments, cell phones, lap tops, tablets, (all sources of time consumption) and things will never be the same as they were with the previous dog. I have a client who just got a new dog, and it is admirable that in working with this person, they have NEVER said “I wish this dog was more like my last!” They have made references to accepted differences, but only once maybe twice. Most people rant and rave about the previous dog and never accept their current dog for who they are, rather they reject their current dog for not being like the previous one. Owning a new dog is an opportunity for a fresh start and a better one at that! Do things with your current dog that you never did but wanted to with the previous one. Get creative, and make it an enjoyable experience. 5. Avoid using food to stop an unwanted behavior!!!! Now all the trainers that disagree with this are sure to write us with some hate mail, but I don’t care. Let me assure you that your dog knows how to eat already. There is absolutely no reason to try to reteach something they already know quite well. Food is never a reward to a dog while experiencing a problem behavior. If you start using food, the dog will see this as a cycle. So in the dog’s mind, they think “Hey, if I go nuts at the door bell, my owner will tell me to stop, and I will, and then I get an awesome treat!” Think about it, and it makes sense. Let the reward be your happiness in the success of the dog. So, make a decision to not accept “No”. This is a tough one. It require self discipline, and will power, but it can be done. Also we have a group class starting in February, and it will be helpful in learning this concept. For more info, go to: www.shilohk9.com/groupclass.htm. Hope everyone has a great New Year!!
