Training Your Pet
Trixie
Leash Training by: Erin McIver
I
have clients coming to me about problems walking their dogs on a leash. The main problem is getting their dog controlled while being on the leash. Dog owners out there, I have some tips that can help with this type of problem. The command that works very well, that I always teach my clients, is the HEEL COMMAND. I find this so useful and my clients find it useful because it keeps the dog safe and under control. This is why I love teaching this to everyone. To practice this command, I suggest having lots of treats and a lot of extra time, because it can take a lot of repetition. When practicing, try to enjoy it and make it fun, not stressful. I tell my clients if you notice that your dog is getting tired or stressed, stop and take a break and return later. You want it to be an enjoyable training session. The heel command has steps that must be followed closely in order to make it work. Make sure at first you have a six foot lead leash, use a shorter amount of that leash so that the dog has no choice but to stay close. Start with the sit-stay command by your left side. Make sure you hold the leash in your left hand and that you are evenly lined up with your dog. Hold the treats in your left hand to encourage your dog to stay in the correct position, say your dog’s name and then say “HEEL” and begin just taking a few steps at first in a straight line. You can increase the number of steps when you feel that your dog is ready. When doing this step I give out treats during this time and give lots of praises to let the dog know that he or she is doing a good job, and doing it correctly. While walking, the dog is allowed to sniff and dawdle, however the dog must stay on the left side and must not cut in front of you. If the dog is tempted to pull and cut in front of you, re-correct the dog starting from the very first step starting from the sit and stay command. Then when ready, start the walk over. You may need to practice this more than once, a couple of times a day, and for about a week until the dog understands the concept. Another issue that a dog owner has about walking on a leash is that the dog doesn’t want to go with the owner. This can be easily fixed, especially with younger dogs. All you need to do is teach the “Let’s Go” command in a happy voice, or whatever phrase works for you. Make sure you have treats, because if
the dog starts to move, praise it and give it a treat. Keep praising it if it continues to walk Erin’s dog Trixie benefits from the “heel command”, to help her stay under control. with you. Now, if your dog decides to sit and refuses to walk, the first thing the owner should do is get the dog moving. One thing I tell my clients is to take their dog to another space. I then tell the client to start playing with them or giving them a treat to help take the mind off the collar and the leash. Then you can start to move around with the dog on the leash, and give it a tug. The dog should take the steps. I get really good feedback on the techniques that I have taught. These are steps I am hoping that the readers find very helpful and can use as a reference. Erin McIver works with all animals professionally. She first started out as a pet sitter in 1997 and then decided to start her own pet services in 2009, to work with animals as a profession. Since then her services have been growing. Erin has clients from all over the Triad including: Winston-Salem, Clemmons, Rural Hall, Kernersville, Greensboro and Raleigh. Working with animals means the world to her and she loves what she does. Erin explains, “I love to please the pets by making them feel happy by playing with them, feeding them, taking dogs out on a walk, providing fresh water every day, and of course giving them lots of love, care, and attention and provide them pet therapy when needed.”

LUMPS, MASSES AND BUMPS, OH MY! Lumps, masses, bumps, tumors, moles, cysts, warts, growths… No matter what you may call it, when you first find one on your furry family member often we fear the worst. Don’t panic but DO be proactive. WHAT SHOULD WE DO FIRST? Some masses are not a concern and some may even go away on their own. However, there are some that may get progressively worse very quickly so it is always best to have any mass looked at by your veterinarian ASAP. Don’t wait for it to start bothering your pet. Some tumors can be quite serious without ever causing pain and some pets mask pain very well. What might be a minor change in behavior such as licking at the mass or a change in the way your pet sits is often a sign of discomfort. Licking the mass often causes infection and inflammation and can make things worse very quickly. Before your appointment make notes so you have all the information on hand. When did you first notice the mass? Since you first noticed it has it changed in size or coloration? Are there any other similar or new masses anywhere else? Look at the area and skin around the mass – note if the area is red in color, ulcerated (open/bleeding), irritated, or inflamed. The night before your appointment look over and rub your pet thoroughly to see if you find any other areas of concern. If the mass is not easy to find or covered in hair it may also be a good idea to mark it with a circle or place a small dot with a permanent marker (or white out - if your pet has dark fur)! WHAT WILL MY VETERINARIAN DO? First your veterinarian will do a thorough examination. After assessing the lump and the rest of your pet’s health, your veterinarian will make recommendations for further diagnostics or recommend waiting and monitoring for changes. However, only your veterinarian should make this callcomparing pictures on the internet is NOT an adequate way to evaluate masses! The first step to diagnosis is collecting a sample for cytology (looking at it under the microscope). Depending on what your veterinarian finds, they may make recommendations for additional diagnostics such as bloodwork,
10
January 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
radiographs, or ultrasound. We all know how stressful and concerned you may be until you find out what the mass actually is, but don’t rush the diagnostic process, getting a full and complete picture of the problem first is needed to make sure nothing is missed and we can plan a full treatment schedule tailored to your pet’s specific concern or needs. Sometimes your veterinarian may want to reach out to a specialist for further diagnostics or opinions. What could this mass be? And what are some different types of masses? First of all we don’t like the “C” word either, and while not all masses are cancerous/malignant, the sooner you find them and begin treatment the better the outcome. But before we go to worst case scenario not every lump or bump on your pet will even actually be a tumor. Some superficial bumps can be anything from an insect bite, trauma/injury, hematoma, abscess or sebaceous cyst. Sometimes these are nothing to worry about and we often will just keep a very close eye on the area for any changes. Sometimes draining the cyst, antibiotics or surgical exploration of the area may be recommended. TYPES OF TUMORS: A tumor or neoplasm is an abnormal new growth of cells. These usually grow more rapidly than normal cells and will continue to grow if not treated. As they grow, neoplasms can intrude upon and damage surrounding cells or structures. The term can refer to benign or malignant (cancerous) growths. Benign tumors - Benign tumors are a non-malignant tumor meaning they are localized to one area and do not spread to other parts of the body. When indicated, most benign tumors respond well to treatment/surgery. Keep in mind that recovery, cost and full removal or surgical excision is easier when the mass is still small. Some benign tumors do not require surgery, but others can grow large and lead to serious disease or complications because of their size. Some common benign tumors are: lipomas, papillomas, hyperplasia, histiocytomas, and adenomas. Malignant tumors - Malignant tumors are cancerous growths meaning that they have the potential to spread to other areas or organs in the body. Catching them early before spread has occurred is critical! There are many types and different treatment options available with new discoveries happening every day. Some common malignant tumors are: mast cell tumors, melanomas, adenocarcinomas, carcinomas, hemangiosarcomas, and fibrosarcomas. WHAT ARE COMMON TREATMENT OPTIONS? Treatment options will vary greatly. The most common treatment option for benign tumors is surgical excision. At our hospital, we have a cryosurgical unit that allows us to remove by freezing certain skin masses. In many cases with this technique, patients don’t even have to be sedated or under anesthesia! For malignant tumors often multiple steps in treatment are needed. Common options vary from surgical excision to radiation, and chemotherapy. Advancements in cancer treatments are changing every day. We have seen patients thrive and live a long good quality life for many years after their first diagnosis. IMPORTANT TAKEAWAYS: The most important thing to remember from all of this is to be proactive. Preventative care and early detection is key! Our pets unfortunately age much faster than we do so waiting a few months to have your veterinarian check a “lump” may be similar to you or I going a few years with undiagnosed cancer. This often decreases our treatment options and ability to control or reduce metastasis to other parts of the body. Even in worse case situations when you opt not to do extensive treatment, talk to your veterinarian about minimal things you can do to keep your pets comfortable. Often pain medications, steroids, nutraceuticals, and diet can aid in your pet’s overall quality of life.

I
Andie
By Susan Voss
had to put my 15.5 year old companion to sleep about six months before I adopted Andie. My 10 year old Lab, Beggar, seemed to be “sad” too because he was an only dog now. I knew I would adopt a little girl but didn’t know when or how so I decided to leave it up to God. My husband and I went to the Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation one Saturday morning “just to look”. Well, there she was, so little, wearing a pink shirt, about seven weeks old. A sign on her kennel read “Andie”. Once I held her I knew I’d love her forever. But there was more to the story. Andie was trapped in a 12 foot storm drain for about three weeks, in February of all months. The neighbors were relentless, they called the city, the county, the police, the fire department, animal control, all to no avail. They could hear her cries and would drop food and water in the drain for her. My husband and I had no idea about this but it made her even more special to us. Andie is a miracle. She has the sweetest personality, she is full of love. When she wags her tail to greet you, her whole body wags. She has brought joy to my life and my husband’s life. She and Beggar are best buddies, she got him moving a lot more than he was before. I recently got in touch with one of her rescuers and sent her Andie’s pictures. She wanted to know if it was OK to share with the others involved in her rescue because they, too, were concerned for her. I said absolutely! Their care, concern and determination got her through this ordeal. We are so grateful to be her fur mommy and daddy, words can’t express.

Anxiety in Dogs You’ve probably heard the saying, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. I’d argue “anxiety is (also) in the eye of the beholder”. For example: If I scheduled you to speak to 500 people tomorrow you may feel uneasy. Meanwhile, I’d volunteer for it! There are things in life that you would do with ease that I may cringe at. Feelings of anxiety come from our personalities, partly due to genetics, and largely, our experiences in life. Anxieties range from a feeling to a true medical disorder. If you are a hero that adopts an adolescent or adult pet you may need to work through issues from past experiences that your pet cannot explain to you. Two common conditioning methods to help your companion overcome apprehension with facing certain situations are desensitization and flooding. Desensitization is initially a slower process that doesn’t push an animal over their “freaking out” level. Flooding hyper exposes the animal to what they are distressed about, pushing into their desire to fight or run without letting them do so. The theory is that they live through it and learn that it won’t kill them. Flooding is used because it feels like the fastest way to overcome said concern. Many of us have already tried flooding as a training method in a less extreme way because it didn’t feel toxic to us. However, we’re not the one experiencing the anxiety. I recently fostered a dog that was terrified of walking through doors. Silly, right? Not to her. She would lose her mind and run away when she was asked to go through one. If and when she got through she’d turn and run back through it the other way. Of course she couldn’t tell me why she was afraid of them. I had a choice on how to show her it was safe to do what I was asking of her. It doesn’t matter whether you’re trying to work with a dog or cat, train your horse, or move livestock. You have to think like they do and find the safest, easiest way to help them overcome whatever anxiety is present. An example of flooding would be to leash her and force her to

January 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
walk through the door repeatedly. Occasionally people will argue that since sometimes “flooding” can work for some humans with anxieties, it must work for all animals. The fault with the argument is that we have to be careful about the level of reasoning we understand in animals. Could this “work” on an outward level, as in, can I force her to get over it by dragging her through repeatedly? Likely. Would it build her confidence in an ability to do other things I ask of her? Unlikely. I would argue she may do what I asked in other situations, but her compliance would be based on fear rather than trust. Would it take longer to do it “right”. Initially, yes. However, I’d argue that the training that follows would take less time if you build the relationship on trust and understanding. When I go watch field trials and dog competitions, I’d argue that the BEST trainers are the ones handling dogs that are having the most fun. I’m very likely biased, but I also find those trainers to be the ones with some of the most consistent awards. The same goes for when we ask tasks of our dogs. Why are they listening? Because of force, fear or a happiness to please us as their guardians?
How does it go from a feeling to a severe anxiety? Fight or Flight. Almost as simple as that. We all have an innate fight or flight response. Think about a coworker, boss, or relative that you always have a bad experience with. Think of the times you couldn’t fight them despite wanting to (I’d not suggest it!) and you couldn’t avoid them. If you were forced to deal with them, you likely developed feelings of anxiousness if you knew of an upcoming interaction with them. The severity of the anxiousness correlates to the level of distaste of the interaction. The same goes for our dogs. We need to allow them to express their flight response, if appropriate. For example, for dogs with horrific storm anxieties, they must have a safe place in their home they can “flight” to. They need their own space that is “bomb proof ” for whatever they are dealing with. Medications may or may not be needed depending on the severity of the anxiety and their environment.
Helping to PREVENT Anxieties in Young Dogs Besides “normal” anxieties like storms, our canine companions can suffer from other more silent and unnoticed anxieties, like dealing with new people, motorized machines, other animals, cats, etc. Starting at eight weeks is THE most important time to socialize your pups. Of course there are important ways to keep your dog safe from infectious diseases during this time, too. Ashley Ferris, the dog trainer, at Pampered Paws Village in Stokesdale and I will be writing a follow up article on how best to prevent anxieties in puppies and how to develop confidence in older dogs.

Nellie came to Merit with a hurt leg and a belly full of babies. Initially, we thought she may lose her leg, but she is now happy and healthy and ready for a home of her own. She is good with kids and other dogs, but finds cats a little too interesting. Nellie especially enjoys catching Pokemon with her foster dad. She is ready for a forever home since her pups have found theirs.

Gemma's
life
story doesn’t start out with the fairy tale beginning that all dogs deserve. She was born into the home of a hoarder, raised with a pack of dogs, and not treated like the royal princess that she has come to be. Gemma was rescued (along with all her canine friends) and came to live with an ARFP foster home. Trust had to be formed, and now Gemma is enjoying life for the first time. She likes a quiet home where she can be herself. Gemma gets along with other dogs, and is ready to find her forever home. Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n

(short for Frankenstein) was abandoned at the Next Step Adoption Center on Halloween weekend. Frank was left in a dirty carrier, outside the front door in the hot sun. Luckily, volunteers found him and his life has been uphill ever since. Frank has acclimated well to life with his furry friends at the center. He daydreams of a happily ever after ending that is complete with a family of his own. Do you think you can be the next chapter in this story? Come visit Frank and make his dreams come true. Lilo
Harvey.
is a 1 to 2 year old young female Lab mix who is wonderfully friendly and sociable. She is a big girl, probably about 65 pounds. She is great with older children and was playful and good at sharing with her foster family’s other dogs. She uses a doggie door to take herself out to go potty and is house-trained already. Lilo already knows her basic commands such as sit and stay and she likes to be obedient. She is used to running around in a fenced yard instead of walking on a leash so needs a little training to reign in her enthusiasm on walks. Lilo should fit in well in most any household. Adoption donation $175.
Tiny 11 pound, 10 year old Rat Terrier/ Chihuahua Harvey spent his entire life outside all by himself. Now, he is safe and warm with us! He is a doll baby of a pup, so gentle, loving and quiet. He is a special needs boy who has neurological issues and trouble walking but he has an amazing spirit. Please visit us at www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org to see his full listing. Marco
Petey
is a wonderful 1 to 2 year old, sweetheart of a pup. He is 49 pounds full grown. He is delightfully sweet to everyone, well behaved in the car and so cooperative at the vet’s office. He sits on command, comes when he is called, is submissive and very eager to make people happy. He loves to cuddle. He has been great with the other dogs here and has good doggie manners. Marco has an easygoing, pleasant personality, though he also has plenty of energy to run and play. Adoption donation $175.
is an exuberant youngster who is just over 1 year old. He is well house-trained and knows his commands. He is affectionate and loves to be close to people. He is a friendly boy and likes everyone, even kids. Petey is sociable when out and about in the park, etc., but is overly territorial and protective of his home and family. He needs an owner who will take charge so Petey does not feel that he has to be the alpha male. He is better when he has had plenty of exercise and is relaxed and tired. Petey is seeking an active and kind but firm owner since he appreciates and benefits from structure and guidance. Adoption donation $125.

Tippy
Marilyn
is a super cute 6 and a half pound munchkin who may be part Toy Fox Terrier or Chihuahua. He lived in a loving home for 10 years until his owner was unable to care for him. He bonds quickly and very much enjoys being with loved ones. He enjoys a cozy lap. Tippy is great on the leash and enjoys going for walks. He is fine with other dogs though not a playmate, just a peaceful companion. If you appreciate how well behaved and sweet seniors are, you must come meet our adorable Tippy. Adoption donation $125.
enjoys attention and easily makes friends with strangers. She enjoys affection and likes to purr for you. Like most cats, she appreciates a good view outside so that she can enjoy watching birds and nature. She is about 2 years old and a petite 7 pound girl. Her pure white coat is beautiful. She loves to chase toys and play. Common to white cats, she had a little abnormal skin on her ears so we had that trimmed away by our vet and she is perfectly fine now. Her new ears are kind of cute! Meet Axle.
He is a German Shepherd Mix about 1 year of age. Axle was found running around the streets of downtown Greensboro. He had no microchip and his owner could not be found. The wonderful people who found Axle brought him to us to find him a good home. He is fitting in well with our other animals and is not aggressive toward them or our staff. Axle has a lot of puppy qualities but could easily be trained. Maybe Axle could come to live in your home. He is a great dog that just wants someone to love him and give him plenty playtime. Call SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 for more information. n

She is very playful and will play with someone for hours. Please give Layla the chance at a good home where she will get the love and attention she deserves! Slick is an American Bulldog estimated to be about a year old and he weighs around 48 lbs. Slick doesn’t do well on a leash so maybe a fenced in yard would be advised. He would make someone a great companion. If you need a new pet maybe you could find it in your heart to let Slick be the one you choose. Or maybe Slick will choose you.
is a sweet cuddly little guy. He came to us as a surrender with the owner telling us she was a girl, who we then named Mina. To our surprise, shortly after being here we discovered Mina was no little girl and immediately changed the name to Minnow, a little more of a masculine name. Minnow is a favorite here at the center and seems to get along with our other cats. Along with being cuddly, he likes his play and nap time too. Please come out and meet Minnow and see if he could be the new family member you are looking for.

Ruthie
is a domestic shorthair tabby, around 7 years old. Ruthie and her friend Ben were unfortunately put outside when their owner passed away. They lived outside for over a year before the house was sold and the buyers put a plea out on Facebook for a rescue to take them in. We gladly accepted them into our center. Ruthie has a sweet laid back disposition and always greets whomever walks in the room. She needs a family that will take her in and keep her out of the cold. She has spent enough time outside! Maybe Ruthie will steal your heart. Call SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 for more information.

Ben.
This gorgeous black and white kitty has fur like silk. Ben is a domestic long haired cat about 6 years old. Ben and his friend Ruthie were abandoned on their property when their owner passed away. After spending a year outside, the house was sold and the new owners put a plea on Facebook for a rescue to please take them in. We took them in. Ben, though 6 years old, is as playful as a kitten. When our staff cleans his condo, he believes it is playtime and will go after whatever they are cleaning with. He loves to be petted and will purr up a storm when you do so. Hopefully, Ben will find a new home soon. Call SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 for more information. n

She loves to have her belly rubbed and lay next to her foster family members. Bailey Triad Golden Retriever Rescue comes when called and does not need to be crated when left home alone. Tuesday & Trumbull are a mother and son who have been together since his birth and lived with the same family as indoor dogs and regular members of the family. Apparently the family built a new house and didn’t want the dogs inside anymore, so Doberman Rescue of the Triad they surrendered them to the shelter. These dear Dobers were traumatized by their sudden circumstances. The shelter folks placed her in a foster home because of the trauma she was experiencing, and they placed him with the vet due to his underweight condition and to have him neutered. She was so distraught at being separated from her son that she howled for days until they were brought together again here with us. Because they are so closely bonded, they must be adopted together. You can see more photos and read more about Tuesday and Trumbull online at www.doberman-rescue.com. Shae. Born about February 2016, Shae is an adorable orange and white stumpy Manx mix boy. He loves to be petted and cuddled, and likes to play with a fishing pole toy. We believe the last weeks, days, and moments that an owner has with a pet are the most cherished times, and should be handled with dignity and love. By providing veterinary hospice and pet euthanasia services in the home, the human-animal bond is less disturbed, making a much more peaceful closing to a shared bond.

Ricky was pulled from the Marlboro County shelter in SC. He was underweight, had a skin allergy, arthritis, and an ear infection. GSRA is getting all of his health issues under control and Ricky is proving to be a total gentleman about it all. Ricky is house-trained, good on leash, and with dogs and cats. He loves car rides, squeaky toys, naps, and being told what a good boy he is. Ricky will need some continued medical care to keep him happy and healthy, but this gentle, sensitive, loving boy will be worth it. German Shepherd Rescue & Adoptions

Palm City Milo. I may be the most handsome male at the Greyhound Friends kennels right now. I’m young, only two years old, playful, and friendly. My buddy Wheels has more freckles on his nose, but I’m more symmetrical and have a great personality. I love people. Since I had seven littermates, I get along great with other Greyhounds, but not so much cats. Jazzy.
Casper.
Hello, World! I am Jazzy, a petite Boxer mix who is looking for an adventurous mom to call my own! I was found as a stray a year ago, roaming the city streets. My rescuers could tell I had been mistreated and neglected but one look into my soulful, brown eyes and they knew all I needed was love to heal! I’m super smart and learn things quickly, especially if treats are involved. I do well with lazy, laid back dogs after proper introductions but, honestly, I would prefer to be the only girl in your world. I’m spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and the HSAC is treating my heartworms and expects me to make a full recovery. If you’re a young, single lady looking for a fun and happy four-legged gal, call and ask for ID# 2374.
Boo!!! I’m Casper (ID# 2486) and I’ve got a bit of unfinished business to discuss. You see, I once lived with a wonderful family who loved me and took great care of me but unfortunately, the littlest family member started sneezing and coughing every time I appeared. As difficult as it was, we all decided it was best for me to find a new home to haunt and that is where you come in! I’m five years old, neutered and love sneaking up on people and receiving attention from adults and children alike. I’m perfectly content to sit in a comfortable lap but would prefer not to be picked up or carried—I’m a free spirit, you see. I can be a bit shy and fearful of loud noises but I promise to come out of my shell and hiding places once I feel comfortable in my new home.

music together?
(ID# 2191). Taylor is an orange, male tabby who is litter box trained and gets along well with children and dogs. He likes attention but prefers to receive it when he asks for it first. He loves felines of the female variety but he can be a bit too forceful with male cats. Taylor is a very quiet cat and a master at finding hiding spaces when he wants to be left alone. He is also a night owl who loves playing with toys that have feathers and bells. He can be shy at first but once he is comfortable, he is very cuddly and would make a wonderful addition to anyone’s family.

(ID# 1646). Bonpurrr! I am Sissy the Sweet, a laid-back girl with a gentle meow and beautiful glossy fur. I love to be petted and have my head and chin scratched. While I don’t really like to be picked up, I do enjoy sitting next to you to keep you company. I am the most active in the morning and early evening and little stuffed mice are my absolute favorite toys to play with. I love to lounge upon my foster mom’s piano while I listen to her play and accompany her with my purrs... What do you say? Shall we make beautiful
Prince George.
Betty White.
(ID#2477). Hear ye! Hear ye! Behold our little Prince! His Royal Highness, Prince George, is a most handsome long haired lad with the finest of pedigrees! His meow is simply magnificent as is his purr, both winning accolades across the kingdom. He simply adores his subjects and while he may still be young, he has inherited the finest of feline qualities that will one day help him serve his people as a just and loyal king. Is he one to rule your world?
(ID# 2353). As my human namesake once said “You’re never too old for anything!” and that certainly holds true for me as well! I am Betty White and I am one feisty little senior! I may be up there in age but those years have only made me wiser and braver. My eyesight may not be what it once was but I certainly don’t let that stop me from going anywhere and everywhere with my foster in tow. A trip to the beauty salon now and then keeps my graying locks in check and these wrinkles of mine are a testament to a life well lived. Take me home and shower me with affection when I demand it but, please, keep all of those other pups at bay...I’m all the energy you’ll need in your home!!

My foster mom is starving me (just kidding….although I think she is starving me) so that I will lose weight and feel so much better. I am spayed, UTD on shots and on HW preventative. I also had a dental. My foster mom put me outside once and I thought the world was coming to an end. I am a very Chihuahua Rescue friendly gal and love laps and attention. In the meantime, if you are interested in me, please submit an application. www.chihuahua-rescue.org/chihuahuas-for-adoption/online-application/, to fill out an application for Baby. n

The Power of
BUDDIE
W
By Juan Santos
hen I married my wife, I also married her childhood dog “Buddie”. It has been almost a year since Buddie left us. Yet, I can spend endless hours talking about him. As a professional counselor, father and husband, I have a unique view into the gift a pet brings to a house. The first time I met Buddie, he was protective of my wife and cautious around me. He behaved in the perfect fashion. As a pet, friend, and companion to my wife, he protected her and supported her when she needed him. It took time, a lot of time for Buddie to welcome me into his life as he did my wife. Yet, I completely understand why. Even in our personal lives, we display caution around new people. We protect those we love and we require time to grow emotionally close to others. To strangers, Buddie appeared as a lazy overweight Beagle. To us, he wore many hats in life. Buddie was the trampoline to my overly energetic daughter. He allowed her to push, pull and jump all over him. Yet, if he felt a stranger approach her; he was protective and supportive. Buddie was a positive distraction. At times when life through curve balls, he would show up eager and ready to distract. Buddie was more than a dog to scratch. I think most people, like my wife and I, have difficult days. Work days filled with exhaustion and burnout. Days that would drive us from sadness to anxiety. Scratching Buddie was anything but a simple scratch. I truly believe that Buddie came to us because he knew we needed him. He would allow us, as exhausted parents, to hold or scratch him until our mood would shift for the better. It is with great pain that Buddie is not around for my son to push, pull and jump on. It is with great sadness that I did not tell Buddie how important he was to me as a father, husband, and counselor. Yet, I’m sure that he knew. Pets have the power to support us with sadness, anxiety, and so much more. It’s interesting how we can enter a simple rescue shelter with a frown and exit with a smile. As a healer, I want to encourage others to explore their pet’s ability in providing comfort and emotional support.
