Sweet loves his laser treatments
Sweet is an indoor kitty who was suddenly paralyzed and could not use his back legs. X-rays revealed a fractured vertebra. Surgery was not an option but Erchonia laser therapy was. After 6 treatments, Sweet can now walk without assistance. Erchonia cold laser therapy combines different light frequencies that stimulate cellular energy production. Increased cellular energy accelerates wound healing, decreases inflammation and decreases the pain associated with these medical conditions. l11e FDA approved Erchonia laser used in human medicine is now available for your pet. The Erchonia laser now has over 15 FDA approved applications.

Training Your Pet
Human to Dog Behavior By June Guido, Just Dogs Academy
“He’s my baby.” “My dogs are my children.” How many times have we heard (or said) these words or something similar? In behavior training, assigning human qualities to your dog can actually make it more difficult to create a well-behaved dog. Many times, people new to having dogs don’t even realize they’re doing this. But not knowing the difference between human and dog behaviors, or saying that your dog is “just playing” when perhaps she’s really posturing, can be dangerous for both you and your dog, not to mention other dogs and people in the community. One example is what we call “kissing.” This is really just a pack behavior left from the wild. Pack leaders would return from the hunt having eaten most of the kill. Subordinate dogs would lick the leaders’ flews (the floppy part of the lips) to get them to regurgitate much of what had been eaten so that the rest of the pack could eat as well. Essentially, that is what your dog is doing to you, even though you feed them kibble rather than regurgitated food. Jumping also falls into this category – the subordinate is trying to get to your flews. What we call “jealousy” – a dog inserting itself between you and a friend or another dog – is really just behavior to establish pack order. You’re the Big Honcho, but who’s second in command? Your dog doesn’t really want a belly rub, per se (even though we know they love it). He’s showing you his soft, vulnerable side as a sign of submission to your leadership. Another bad habit we as owners fall into is baby talk. Our dogs are so adorable – we just can’t help ourselves! But using that baby talk tone of voice only serves to confuse our dogs as to who is really in charge. Since dogs are pack animals, your job is to make sure your dog understands that you are the leader of the pack. Establishing dominance can be tricky. Notice your dog’s behavior; is he putting his front paws in your lap so that his head is higher than yours? Is she humping your leg? These are behaviors dogs use to try to assert dominance, and must be discouraged in order for you to maintain your place at the head of the pack. So what can we do to establish our place at the top of the food chain? Emulate a real pack leader’s behavior. In wild dog packs,
the leader doesn’t whine or use mincing behavior. She stands tall and uses a big voice to keep the subordinate dogs in line. You need to use a voice that commands attention and respect (think Army sergeant). Use your grown up voice to give commands – tell, don’t ask. Another activity that isn’t necessarily thought of as dominant – but really is – is the act of grooming your dog. In that role, you’re standing above or kneeling over your dog (remember the bit about who’s head was higher?). You’re controlling the dog’s movements (especially if you have her on a grooming table) and establishing your place as the pack leader. Out of all the things to remember when you’re training your dog, the most important is to be consistent. If the dog is exhibiting bad behavior, you cannot make an excuse, you have to correct it. For example, if you want your dog to leave the cat alone, you can’t correct him for chasing the cat then allow him to “play with” the cat. You have to correct him every time he pesters the cat, whether you think it’s harmless or not. A well-behaved, well-trained dog makes a better family member, and a better member of the community. But don’t forget that when you sign up for a training class, you’re there to be trained as well. While you are learning manners for your dog, you should also be learning what are appropriate dog behaviors and and how not to project human behaviors onto your dog. Good manners and a well-informed owner will ensure that you and your dog have a great relationship that will, hopefully, last for a long, long time. Best Wishes!

Birds as Pets -
Need Special Consideration!
H
appy Holidays to everyone. I pondered long over what topic would be beneficial at this time of the year and then it came to me; a partridge in a pear tree. Often people think of birds as decorative items. “Oh he is so pretty” is the number one describer of birds. Has anyone ever said; “Oh they live so long!”? Unfortunately people do not realize how long lived a pet bird is. When they are given as gifts, particularly to older people or even younger people, no one thinks about the consequences to the birds. A Macaw or African Grey can live to be in their 70’s, that’s a long time to be taking care of an animal. You have to clean poop constantly, provide nourishment, vet care, companionship. If you go on a trip, you have to find proper care while you are gone. This is a major commitment! If the pet is given to someone over 50, they better be planning their wills and making provisions for their pet. Birds are one of the species that has an extremely hard time adapting to new environments. They are very much attached to a person, a food and an environment. Trying to rehome them can be an unrewarding experience for the person and a disaster for the bird. They are not particularly quiet, unlike barking dogs and meowing cats, the screech of an angry Macaw or an African Grey can cause every nerve in your brain to go on overload. Birds can be good companions, but they have to be worked with from the time they are hatched. They will bite if startled, 10
January 2018 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
that bite can be quite severe and quite painful. You cannot housebreak them, therefore you must be willing to constantly clean up after them. Finding a veterinarian that will see birds can also be a challenge, many veterinarians know nothing about birds, and the birds themselves can be quite a handful. So…Before you think of purchasing or giving a bird as a “Gift” make sure that you have thought it out fully and that you are going to commit to this animal for THEIR life. It will put a crimp on yours. If you have recently adopted an exotic pet and you aren’t sure how to properly take care of it, Dr. Cowan will give you some helpful tips and information.

A Healing New Year! by Melissa Ball
A
s we welcome 2018 with excitement and new opportunities, it’s also a great time to reflect on 2017 and our medical foster program. We had an extremely busy year, helping over 100 medical cases. With a 40% increase in our medical foster program over the past year, it has been non-stop! We buckled down and shifted our focus from photography to our foster program during the last quarter of 2017. This allowed us to fully concentrate on our growing medical foster program. This year our medical foster program saw a substantial increase in heartworm disease cases. In 2017, over one-third of the medical cases we brought into our program were heartworm positive dogs. In 2016, 16 dogs were treated for heartworm disease compared to 33 to date for 2017. Not only was this 50% increase in heartworm cases financially challenging, but it also put limitations on our program due to the long-term foster commitment of heartworm treatment. Assuming the beginning body condition of the dog is healthy, on average, heartworm treatment takes two-three months of fostering, which includes a month of strict crate rest and minimal

activity. However, this year we did see a few cases of emaciated, heartworm positive dogs, which requires additional care and getting the dog to a stable body weight prior to treatment. In order to minimize stress and the possibility of an unaltered female going into heat, all our dogs are altered prior to heartworm treatment. Typically, the most common side effect we see from heartworm treatment is soreness. Luckily this year we were fortunate to only have one dog require emergency medical care at the specialty clinic due to a pulmonary complication. Our remarkable foster families keep a watchful eye for changes, so we can immediately address medical concerns. Since our medical foster program began in March 2012, we have limited our foster homes to a handful of loving and dedicated households. Although expanding foster homes is a logical step for any organization, we feel quality over quantity is a necessity for our organization. Overseeing a medical-only program and fostering delicate cases takes commitment, attention to detail, and the ability to get fosters to multiple vet appointments throughout treatment. This year, many of our foster families doubled or tripled up on medical cases in order to help awaiting medical cases. The genuine love and commitment that these families have for their foster animals is evident in how they care for them. Phoenix came to the shelter as a 5-month old stray with an embedded collar. Due to her extensive injuries, she was immediately brought to the emergency vet for treatment. After she was stabilized with fluids and medication, she was returned to the shelter, and once her mandatory stray hold time was up, we welcomed her into our foster program. Daily medications and semiweekly baths for mange was essential for her recovery, as well as delicate care of her embedded collar injuries. Now 8 months old, Phoenix’s best traits are her silly personality and loving, affectionate demeanor. She craves attention and loves giving kisses and gentle hugs. As a puppy, she is ready for the world of obedience and manners training, which is essential with any dog. After months of care, Phoenix has completed her medical treatment and is ready to spend the New Year with a new family! Like Phoenix, Luna had one of the most extensive cases of

mange our program had ever seen. Luna was surrendered to the shelter when her former owner was unable to properly care for her medical needs. Four-year old Luna, who was underweight, spent most of her life on a tether and never got to experience playing with other dogs. The first few weeks of Luna’s care included baths two-three times a week, daily medications, and a few emergency trips to the vet. Luna is one of our long-term fosters who still requires daily medication and weekly baths. Although she looks like a different dog and her coat has come in nicely, she still needs daily medication. After living a life chained and producing litter after litter, Zara ended up at the shelter with her four puppies. Emaciated, sick and heartworm positive, she had no options, but we were determined to find space in our program and give her a second chance. Multiple meals a day enabled Zara to gain weight, and daily medication healed her skin infection and mastitis. Although some dogs have a difficult time remaining quiet during heartworm treatment, Zara found the comforts of couch life and easily adapted to life as a cherished house pet. Zara has completed her heartworm treatment and is patiently waiting for the perfect home that will pamper her princess lifestyle. Those who run animal welfare nonprofits recognize every day that it is both challenging and rewarding, but overseeing a medical-only foster
program takes an additional amount of strength. Our program is constantly being rewritten and often pushed to the limit. Schedules and timelines predictably run off track with unforeseen medical issues, emergency surgeries and additional medical care. Easily, a few-weeks-long foster commitment can turn into a few months. For Project Pearl, our goal has always been quality of life and making animals comfortable. We work closely with our veterinarians making sure our medical fosters get all the care they need prior to being adopted. Originally, our medical foster program was created to work exclusively with Forsyth County Animal Control. As a county run shelter, funding was not available for animals that entered the shelter critically sick or injured. Although Project Pearl paid for their medical care and provided foster homes, the animals were owned and adopted by the county. In late 2017, Project Pearl began taking ownership of medical cases. Sick and injured animals are now transferred from the shelter to Project Pearl. This allows us to screen applicants, collect nominal adoption fees, and handle our own adoptions after animals have cleared their medical. In the coming year, with so many animals requiring medical care, we are looking to expand our medical foster program into the community by working with other county shelters and veterinarians who find themselves caring for injured animals, without a home.

Thomas.
I was found at a work place, and my mom never came back. I was bottled-fed by a wonderful foster mom and am now big enough to be adopted by a loving person. I’m very personable and have a brother named Jack. I’m up-to-date on my vaccinations and tested negative for FIV/FeLV. DOB 9/13/2017. Meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n
Panther.
I’m Panther, born 8-9-2017, brother to Foxy. I love my tiny fur ball of a sis. She and I make a great team. I play quarterback and she plays my perfect center by making sure I’m where I’m supposed to be and doing what I’m supposed to be doing. In other words, she keeps me out of trouble! I’m curious, but smart enough to follow her lead. We love playing with all our house mates and sharing all of our toys, but we’d like to find a place of our own, with our very own folks and toys and maybe even our own dog. Meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Marie.
I am a Calico/Torbie with black freckles across my face. I lost my mom early, so was bottle-fed and cared for by my foster mom for 4 months. I like to play on the cat tree and run around with the 5 cats/ kittens and 3 small dogs I live with. I run fast and I like to cuddle and sleep next to my new foster mom. I would like to have another kitten to play with, and a forever home with lots of love. DOB 7/18/17. Hutch
was a bottle baby which makes him super people-friendly! He is the “runt” of his litter but he is full of fight and personality. His foster Mom gets a lot of laughs as he lets his opinions be known. He loves to play and he loves affection. DOB 7/1/2017.

Mario.
I’m Brookelyn, a DSH Dilute Calico female, born around May 12, 2017. I look very unique because I have an orange stripe right down the middle of my face! My sister, Catalina, and I were born to Vienna who was rescued from a barn and then brought to AARF because our rescuer had severe allergies to us. I’m very outgoing and like being the center of attention. I love toys! My favorite toy is ball with the jingle bell inside.
I’m Mario, a beautiful orange tabby. I love to play with my siblings, especially my brother Rocky Balboa. We love to wrestle and we would make great play mates for children! We would love to be adopted together! I will look up to you and talk to you if you talk to me. I love to be petted and when it’s time to nap I sleep in my pink cat bed. I get along great with the big cats in the house. I was a little timid at first, but now I love my foster family! I was born in early June 2017.

Riley. Looking for a calm, loving, 80-pound lap dog with a heart of gold? Look no further and meet Riley, he’s is one of our superstars in our medical foster program! The minute we saw Riley’s soulful eyes, we knew he would be an amazing dog for a lucky family! Riley was surrendered to our county shelter and did not qualify for adoption due to testing positive for heartworm Project Pearl disease. At the perfect age of five years old, this amazing mix breed lives with other dogs, enjoys playing and fetching his ball. However, Riley’s FAVORITE thing in life is to be with his people! Riley was treated for heartworm disease and is now ready for his new home! Photo courtesy of DesiLu Photography. Buffy is a lovely, sweet kitty. She was a great mother to four babies, all were adopted. Buffy has been in a room with another great cat, but they are not the best of friends. Given some patience and a little time to adjust, she’ll make a nice addition to a home. She has a little bit of mischief to her nature, but that makes her interesting! Snort is the MOST amazing boy! He’s an 11 year old male Pug surrendered to the rescue due to no fault of his own. He LOVES people and wants to be near you at all times, although is fine when he can’t be. He is very tolerant of other dogs and cats but hasn’t been tested around big Pug Rescue of NC dogs. Snort is more of a people Pug and is unlikely to be a playmate to other animals. He is also very good with children but according to this previous owner, prefers slightly older children (ages 3 and up). He is a snuggler and has the cutest little personality. If you are looking for a laid back, easygoing, precious Pug, he’s the companion for you! Neutered, up-to-date on routine shots, microchipped, heartworm negative. His right eye is chronically dry so he will need to be on eye drops the rest of his life. He is fostered in Apex, NC adoption fee is $100.00. Please put in your application at www.pugrescuenc.org. If you can’t adopt please consider sending in a donation to help with the medical bills of the Pugs in rescue. n

Toby is a long hair Chihuahua. He is estimated to be 2 years old and he weighs 6.4 lbs. Toby traveled a long way to get to his current foster home in Virginia. He is one of the many Chihuahuas saved from Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Toby loves to play and run outside. He does Chihuahua Rescue well on a leash and understands the word, “No.” He is currently working on potty training and pad training at his foster home. Toby loves to snuggle with you and sleeps in the bed with his foster mom. He does very well with other small dogs (hasn’t been around big dogs). He seems to be afraid of men but his foster mom is working with him and her boyfriend to build up his trust. He is such a sweet and loving Chihuahua. Toby loves helping you find missing socks. He doesn’t chew them just brings them onto the bed. He is such a little helper. Toby has been neutered, is UTD on shots, HW neg and on HW prevention and has had a dental.

Sissy.
Helen Of Troy
I am Sissy the Sweet, a laid-back girl with a gentle meow and beautiful glossy fur. I love to be petted and have my head and whit chin scratched. My fur is velvety and I have the most striking coloring on my face. While I don’t really like to be picked up, I do enjoy sitting next to you to keep you company. I am the most active in the morning and early evening and little stuffed mice are my absolute favorite toys to play with. I love to lounge upon my foster mom’s piano while I listen to her play and accompany her with my purrs...What do you say? Shall we make beautiful music together?
is a sweet ball of energy. She is a highly energetic, very curious kitten. Helen is outgoing with other cats, and although a little shy at first with new humans, she comes around quickly hoping you will play with her. Her favorite activity is a wand toy if you are at the other end of it. At this stage of her life she is too busy for much lap time, but that will likely change as she ages. After a difficult rescue from being stuck in a car, Helen was very lonely for feline company and found great comfort in her foster sister, Penelope, a gentle senior cat who has been patiently awaiting her forever home. Penelope enjoys Helen’s company as well!

Tucker
I am Penelope, hear me purrrrr! I love being around my people and will be so happy to see you when you come home from work that I will reward you with purring, hoping to entice you to pet and snuggle me. I like being in the same room with my humans, basking in the warmth of the sun shining through a window or in my cat bed with my favorite mouse toy. I love being brushed and playing with toys, but I especially love my foster kitten, Helen of Troy! Helen was recently rescued and as soon as we were introduced, I knew she was mine. We love to cuddle together and would love to find a forever home together!
is a very energetic and playful kitten who loves being around his person and other animal friends! He’s not one for being held, but will give you kisses as he holds your face. He enjoys playing with his canine and feline foster siblings while running around the house and would love to have a four-legged companion in his forever home. Tucker is very smart and very active and will need an adopter willing to play with him to help him expel that energy!

Sheldon
Hi, I’m 12 years young and I’m looking for my forever family! Don’t let my age fool you—I still have lots of energy and lots of love to give! I enjoy jogging around the neighborhood with my foster mom so I would do great with an active family and a fenced yard would be FABULOUS as I love to run and play! I do great with my foster siblings, Chihuahua mixes. I haven’t had much interaction with cats but I’m easygoing and smart so could probably learn to love them. My FAVORITE thing is evening cuddle time and belly rubs with my foster parents. I’m crate-trained, leash-trained and house-trained. I’m a Boston Terrier mix and I’m true to that breed so a person experienced with my personality would be great.
is an amazing boy with such soulful eyes and the most wonderful “mask”! This sweetheart is one smart cookie! He listens well and learns things quickly, especially when treats are in the picture. He loves to play with his siblings when the mood suits him but he much prefers to laze around on the couch or in your lap and snooze. He is house-trained, crate-trained and so ready to find his forever home! Sheldon is truly a great dog who has been patiently waiting for his family to come along!

Misu
Izzy
is a solid, handsome fellow who doesn’t seem to be bothered by much of anything at all. He enjoyed being picked up and scratched behind his ears, but he REALLY likes a good firm pat on his sides. It makes him PURRRRR. Come out and meet Misu at the Guilford County Animal Shelter today! n
is a BEAUTIFUL girl. She was initially very shy and tried to hide from me, but as soon as I brought out the dangle cat toy she was pouncing to get at it. She allowed me to scratch behind her ears and eventually flopped over and let me rub her belly. Meet Izzy at the Guilford County Animal Shelter today! n
Fantasia
Shoal
is a shy guy. He was very interested in the camera and the fact that I was lying down on my stomach in the cat room trying to get his picture. Though he did not want to come out from under the bench to see me, he did scoot by me quickly when I stood up before scurrying off to a cat tower (he seems to really enjoy taking everything in from a distance). Meet Shoal at the Guilford County Animal Shelter today! n
Bebe
is a 1 year old, female and what we believe to be a Labrador/Rottweiler mix. She is a social butterfly and loves meeting new people! Come down to meet her, we bet she will be your new best friend! Meet Fantasia at the Guilford County Animal Shelter today! n
Bonita
is a 7 year old spayed female Bull Mastiff mix who is patiently waiting at the Guilford County Animal Shelter for her forever home. Bebe is a wonderful, gentle giant of a gal who loves spending quiet time with people. She has gone to community outreach events with the shelter’s staff and she was an absolute lady, sitting quietly while children pet her and lying at our feet enjoying a pig ear (or two!) Bebe will shine her brightest in a home where she doesn’t have to share any of the attention, she wants to be your one and only.
is a 4 year old spayed female who was found as a stray and brought into the shelter. This sweet, sweet girl loves for nothing more than to try her best to wiggle into your lap and settle down for a long nap. Bonita did test positive for heartworms when she arrived at the shelter and received heartworm treatment. Now this little lady is on the mend and searching for a forever family to call her very own.

Ronny is a loving little Peke who enjoys sitting next to you or on your lap. He likes other dogs, but prefers sitting with his person. He loves to eat and sticks his nose up in the air when he smells food. Due to scarring on his eyes, Ronny can’t see well, but once he learns his way around – you’d never know it. His eye medication may be able to restore some of his eyesight over time. Ronny would do best in a Peke experienced home with no young children. He is around 8 years Hart-2-Heart Rescue old, weighs 12 lbs. and is housebroken. Ronny is neutered, current on shots, heartworm tested, on heartworm prevention and had his teeth cleaned and some extractions.

Scout
is a cute 5 year old, 7-8 pound Chihuahua who can be a little shy and scared initially but warms up quickly and bonds like glue! She loves laps and is used to lots of lap time and attention. As soon as she knows you, she is very affectionate. She does get lonely quickly and wants an owner who has plenty of time for her. She loves going on leash walks and has plenty of energy for adventures. She has a language all her own and is a talkative munchkin. Adoption donation $175.
is a cute 5 pound, 11 year old Yorkie/ Chihuahua mix who was the beloved pet of a girl his whole life until she went off to college. This tiny senior is unsettled by finding himself in rescue in his golden years. All he wants is one reliable person to love, a predictable lifestyle, lots of lap time and cuddles, and not much else! He does not care for chaos, new folks, other dogs, leash walks, etc. He just wants to be your Velcro baby and not have to deal with anything else!! Adoption donation has been sponsored by a kind person.

Thumper.
Sweet, cheerful 5-6 month old, 4 pound Thumper was found as a stray with his mama. He is a little shy at first, but blossoms right away when around sweet and playful little dogs. He is everything puppy! He LOVES to play with toys, people, and dogs and is fine with well mannered kids. Thumper really needs a doggie friend in his new home, one that does not mind puppy crazies. He is working on his house-training and needs to be taken out on a leash to be sure he does his business outside. Adoption donation $175. Visit www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org for more info. n

She is still young, probably around 2, and 35 pounds. She is looking for a calm new owner who has the patience to bring out this sweet girl’s personality in her new home. Fresco & Pesto. These two Doberkids came to us recently from a loving home where each had previously been rescued by a Dober lover. Fresco, the girl, was rescued a year ago from an abusive situation and weighed only 48 lbs. at the time. While she Doberman Rescue of the Triad got along well with the young woman who rescued her and with other dogs, she was pretty much of a loner until Pesto was also rescued and came to live with her. They bonded quickly and deeply. Pesto has become the center of Fresco’s life. She loves him dearly and is frantic when she is apart from him, even for a bit. They play beautifully together and never tire of one another. In a sense, it’s as though Pesto, rather than humans, rescued her, and all her confidence is in him. Thankfully he takes his responsibility seriously and is the perfect match for her. Read about Fresco and Pesto online at www.doberman-rescue.com. Make an appointment to meet them after your application has been approved. n

Clyde.
This handsome sweetheart loves everyone he meets. He can be playful and energetic, then be completely chill and relax or snuggle with you on the couch. He is the best of both worlds! We aren’t sure of his complete history or how many homes this fella has had, but we know of at least three homes he lived in previously though nobody wanted to claim him. We don’t know why, he is truly a fantastic dog. We discovered the only thing negative about Clyde is that he can be a “Houdini” in a fenced in yard and can dig his way out or climb over low fencing. He does really well on leash walks and would love to find a forever family that will walk him around the neighborhood to make friends (he really loves all other dogs). If you would like to adopt Clyde please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n
Phoenix.
This sweet boy came to Red Dog Farm Memorial Day weekend. Phoenix came to us skinny, ill, and had issues with his eyes. While he is doing so much better he is still having slight issues with his eyesight. He does require a special needs home because of his vision issues. This boy will need a home willing to nurture and understand him. Phoenix does get along very well with dogs, cats and children. He is too sweet! If interested in giving this baby a forever home, please visit us online at www.reddogfarm.com. n
Smoky
Cole.
Are you looking for a seasoned dog to add to your home? If so, then Cole is the perfect fit for you. He is an active 10 year old that enjoys a good adventure or walk in the park. In fact, his adventurous ways will cause him to mill about the neighborhood if his fenced in yard isn’t secure. So long as there are no obvious holes, he won’t bother with socializing without you. It’s much more fun to catch up with neighbors when the whole family comes along. Speaking of family, Cole would be happy with any type of family arrangement - single person, young kids, teenage kids - you name it they all sound great to him. If you are interested in adopting a pure gentleman looking for a second chance at love, then apply today at www.reddogfarm.com. n
Hamlet.
is an adorable 10 month old Lion head bunny needing to find his forever home. He is a sweet boy that loves to cuddle in his foster home and enjoys his fresh veggies and treats. If you are interested in him fill out an application and the adoption fee is $30. Visit www.reddogfarm.com. n
Paco
One look at Hamlet the Piglet’s face and you will be wondering, “To kiss or not to kiss, that is the question.” Apologies to William Shakespeare but it is a baby pig! Hamlet is a five month old Potbelly pig who was surrendered by his former family upon the realization he would exceed their 30 lb. weight limit (potbelly pigs average 100 to 150 lbs). He has recently been neutered and is up-to-date on his vaccinations. He is a personable guy that gets along with others and has just been introduced to Babe the piggy at their foster home. We would love to adopt these cute guys together since piggies enjoy the company of a fellow pig. With a face that seems to have a permanent pucker , little pink floppy ears, an ever wagging tail and the series of bucks he gives during a back scratch, you’ll find him as irresistible as we do.
is a 13 year old standard donkey that came to us as a stray picked up by animal control. He is very sweet and really enjoys having his ears scratched. Currently he is out with a small herd of horses and gets along with everyone. Paco initially had to be kept strictly on a dry lot. However, now that he has been managed properly and has lost weight he is able to go out and graze in the pasture with the herd. We still do not think he needs to be on lush pasture 24/7, but has stayed healthy while maintained on some dry lot time with longer time in the pasture with the herd of his horse friends. Paco will make a perfect farm companion!

Maribelle. This lovely lady has a little bit of age on her but it doesn’t make her any less deserving of a wonderful family! Maribelle is 7 years old, good with other dogs and children, and all she wants in Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue life is to be loved and play with her toys. She loves to have her belly rubbed and will not get on the furniture unless you invite her. RUFF LOVE RESCUE (Dogs) www.ruffloverescue.com or (Cats) felinefriendsnc@gmail.com
Meet Starlight.
She was born in 2014. Star is very loving and just wants to be with her people. She also likes to give kisses. When around one of my cats she is okay but the one that runs from her is the one she watches. Not really sure if she would be OK with cats. Adoption donation $200. All vetting is up-to-date, she’s microchipped, spayed, on flea/tick and heartworm preventative. Visit ruffloverescue.com/adopt to make this pup a member of your family. n

is a happy-golucky energetic Lab mix. He is about 55 lbs. and loves everything! Hiking, snuggling, playing fetch and taking car rides. This 2 year old boy is the whole package with a curly tail too!! Adoption donation $200. All vetting is up to date. All vetting is up-todate, he’s microchipped, neutered, on flea/tick and heartworm preventative. Visit www.ruffloverescue.com/adopt to make this pup a member of your family. n
Polly
Bre.
This little beauty is approximately five years old and has come a long way…from a semiferal where she was found in the woods near a volunteer’s home, to a sweet little cat who asks for pets and plays with her housemates! As you can see she is an adorable tuxie with tiny white feet and a cute blaze on her nose. Bre lives with six other cats and gets along well with them. We are not sure if Bre likes dogs. We offer trial periods for all of our kitties to make sure they fit well into your family. Bre most likely will need a little patience in a new place but will make a wonderful family friend! Adoption fee is $75 or $125 for two as kittens do much better in pairs. Please email felinefriendsnc@gmail.com for an adoption application or check out our website at felinefriendsnc.com. n
Jasper.
Single, buff (in color, haha) male seeks companion that appreciates his desire to romp and play. Jasper is around 3 years old but has the playful energy of a kitten. Unfortunately, Jasper’s older foster siblings aren’t amused with his antics and would rather nap. Jasper loves to sleep under the covers with his foster mom, cuddle on laps, and play whenever he can. Jasper does well with dogs, cats, and toddlers. Will you be Jasper’s partner in crime? Adoption fee is 75$ or 125$ for two as kittens do much better in pairs. Please email felinefriendsnc@gmail.com for an adoption application or check out our website at felinefriendsnc.com. n
Parris
is a sweet energetic girl who is about 2 years old. She is deaf and was adopted as a puppy. She is crate-trained and housebroken. She needs a home with a safe fence and children who can understand that she can’t hear them. Polly is very loveable and a very smart girl. Adoption donation $200. All vetting is up-to-date, she’s microchipped, spayed, on flea/tick and heartworm preventative.
is a beautiful 8 month old black kitten with a sleek shiny coat. Because Parris was feral, she will need a family that realizes that she needs extra patience in gaining confidence in her new home. No doubt that Parris will adjust to her forever home and family because she is thriving in her foster home. Parris is a brave, very loving kitten and has big purrs for all that care about her. Like most kittens, Parris loves to play! She will shy away from kitties that hiss at her, but she really wants to be friends. Parris really enjoys her foster family’s small dog! They hang out, have a good game of chase daily and are best buddies. Will you be the lucky person to call Parris your own? Adoption fee is 75$ or 125$ for two as kittens do much better in pairs.

Portia
is a playful, yet submissive 1-1/2 year old girl who loves attention and cuddles. Portia is a shelter favorite and gets along great with most dogs. And now that her friend got adopted she is all lonely and hoping for the right family to take a chance on her. Portia was surrendered because she was “too big”. Can you believe that?! That just means there’s more to love! She was left to live outside and because of this she is heartworm positive at such a young age! Portia is spayed, up-to-date on her vaccinations, and microchipped She has already started treatment and her adoption fee is only $70 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Please call 336-357-0805 for more information. n
Juliet

Juliet as been at our shelter for over half her life and deserves to live the spoiled life she was always meant to live. Her adoption fee is $60 and includes her spay, vaccinations, and microchip. Come by the Davidson County Animal Shelter today and meet this sweet girl. n
Bluebell
is an absolute sweetheart and the perfect lap cat. She is also playful and can coexist well with other cats, though she does not like them in her personal space. Bluebell has been waiting for a family to call her own for over 7 months. Bluebell’s adoption fee is $30 and includes her vaccines, spay, and microchip. Please contact the Davidson County Animal Shelter to learn more about Blue. n www.triadhappytails.com January 2018

Meet Prancer. She flew in from the cat walk in Paris on November 21st and has been calling RCAS home ever since. And her name fits her purrfectly. Special Feature
Tiny Tim’s Journey Crossed the Rainbow Bridge - 12/4/17
by Jim and Judy Stratton
A
precious life came to an end today unexpectedly, and our family must find a way to reweave all the emotions back together again. Our beloved “Timmy” came into our lives wandering down the middle of a road - matted, tattered and forlorn. All of six pounds, with the most beautiful big bright eyes and the tiniest curls covering that fragile body. Poor little guy quivered with fright at what might lie around the next turn. That look of being overwhelmed will never be forgotten, nor will his courage to believe in the power of love and family. At first sight, you became immersed in his face that just shone with the biggest set of eyes that always twinkled. From his humble beginning, he always was seeking approval and yearned for acceptance. Shy and fearful of the world he knew, the uncertainty of a new home was daunting. He literally had to find out who he was, and more importantly, could he love or be loved? As one of life’s mysteries, Judy and I were about to learn, that this bundle of personality was to become a “wonderful gift” to us for the next 12 years. Little did we know that we were about to be allowed into his heart and in return he was willing to unlock the door to an amazing soul. We are no strangers to sharing our lives with our adopted “Fur-ever Family Members” to which Timmy became number three at the time. Love was shared between us and them unconditionally, as they returned love to us tenfold. But, there are Special Ones, Life Markers and Timmy embodied all of that! I never cease to be amazed at what is unlocked in the soul of a rescue that is just waiting to blossom, with a sprinkling from human love and kindness. Timmy was a natural born entertainer, worthy of the center ring in a three ring circus. His trademark came quickly, with an uncanny ability to sit as if he was a human, head held high and without reservation stand straight up and walk as effortlessly as his humans, maybe even a little better. Of course this brought much deserved loving attention and adulation from everyone. Tiny Tim was blossoming into his full personality. As his courage grew, so did his sense of position within the family. Though small in stature, he possessed an immense presence and
before we knew it, Timmy had his “throne” and loyal family valets. Like all the Special Ones he taught us his own way of “communicating”. His words were expressed in a wide variety of “nose snuffles”, sneezes and snorts. “Time for his favorite treats (Pup-Peronis), time for a short walk or ride in the car and most importantly - time for bed!” The daily ritual was scripted by Mr. Tim’s schedule and we gladly accommodated him. So many heartfelt memories, but maybe the most endearing one was the nightly call to bed. This was his moment, and he cherished it. Once he thought it was time, he would walk over to the hallway leading to our bedroom, turn and with all the bravado he could muster, issue an ear shattering BARK! Meaning, “OK time for bed family.” Once ensconced in bed, he would carefully select the highest pillows and claim them as his mountain - Tim’s Mountain. This feat was the proudest moment of the day, in his mind. Now for a small part of his day, Tim’s soul was at peace and he basked in the comfort and love of family. These memories we will cherish forever and eternally be thankful to him for sharing his heart with us. This experience is what awaits those, of the wonder of adopting one of life’s greatest gifts....
“Timmy, may you run forever free over the rainbow, We’ll be together again!!”
