Even a cowboy’s not safe from heartworms Meet Pip, a young indoor cat who has a single heartworm living in his heart. He contracted heartworms from an infected mosquito. After multiple negative heartworm tests, normal chest x-rays and blood work, Pip was diagnosed with feline heartworm disease during a cardiac ultrasound. Like dogs, cats should also be on a monthly heartworm prevention, either orally or

topically, to protect them from heartworm disease. For more information about feline heartworm diseases, contact University Animal Hospital or visit our website. FROM THE EDITORS

W

e are celebrating our third year with the July issue! Time has gone by so quickly, we have made a lot of good friends of every size, shape and species. Fosters, rescues and shelters face a tough time and the huge influx of homeless, neglected and abused animals can be overwhelming. But, we have never met a more dedicated, hard working group of individuals in any other walk of life. Their attitude is unbelievable, they never cease to amaze us with their grace under fire. That is why we have dedicated our third anniversary edition to the winners of our cover model contest. Their stories tell how good triumphs over adversity, which is usually the case in the world of animal rescue. These are just three of the winners, for they were all winners in our minds. We chose these three with great difficulty, based on their story and how it was told. We hope our readers will enjoy them as much as we did and look for some of the other stories in following issues. We are so excited about our interview with Cesar Millan, who is coming to the LJVM Coliseum in July. From one pack leader to

another, you will not want to miss his advice on pages 44 and 45. Also, please check out Tallulah, the fishing cat at the Deb Printup Jennifer Frazier Greensboro Science Center’s new SciQuarium on page 37. The SciQuarium recently opened and will be an entertaining summer destination. Pack up the kids and head over for some fun. Lastly thanks to our generous advertisers, who have made these three years possible. They have opened their hearts and their pockets, allowing us to feature adoptable animals from 35-plus area shelters and rescue groups, all free-of-charge to these organizations. Please try and support them whenever possible.

Thanks!

Please look over the list of businesses below and support them whenever possible. These companies are the reason we are able to offer the shelters and rescue organizations free space every month. Popsicle. This is “Popsicle”, a super sweet Quaker Parrot that is ready for his forever home! Popsicle’s previous owner was an elderly woman that suffered from dementia. A relative was at the home of the woman when she saw her put the bird into the refrigerator. Since this was not the first experience with an unusual activity involving the bird, the relatives brought the Quaker Parrot in to Parrot Guardian. The Quaker Parrot is Parrot Guardian doing great! Cover Model Contest

From Homeless to Beloved Pet Cover Model Contest Stories

by Jane Dennis

I

n April of 2008, near Wilson, NC, I stopped for gas and saw a dog standing in the road next to a small shopping center. As people came and went, he approached each one, hoping for a handout. Having two dogs at home already, I didn’t get involved … until I saw an elderly woman from the dollar store open a bag and dump it. I couldn’t think of anything healthy for a dog coming from that package. I had to see what it was. I parked in front of the stores and got out. He growled, defending his precious pork rinds—the last thing this skinny dehydrated dog needed on a hot spring day. Remembering the Alpo can rolling in the foot of my truck, I stood on the walkway and popped the top. In a split second, this dog (who had grabbed it out of my hand) slung his head to throw the can and make the food come out. HE HAD STREET SMARTS! I sat on the curb and watched, thinking, he’s either going to come over and let me have it when he sees there’s no more, or he’ll come over and be nice. One thing I had yet to see was a wag

tried, he couldn’t jump in the truck but he did let me help. He curled up on a blanket on the front seat. I told him, “I’ve always wanted a beagle, ever since I was little and played with Mr. Mann’s hunting dogs, but I always thought it would be a tri-color beagle—I wish you had some black fur, but it’s OK.” He slept until we reached home. When shut in my bedroom with me that night, he was crazed, trying to climb on the dresser to reach the window. The magic trick was the sunroom, where he slept quietly alone, able to see the outdoors he knew so well. The next morning he disappeared out of my fenced back yard while I got ready for work. He was so determined to be near the outdoors, I resigned myself to thinking Buddy the Beagle he was gone--I didn’t expect to find him. But there he Left, Buddy, when he was first found at 23 lbs. was, only three houses down my street, staring at me Above, Buddy, 43 lbs. through the fence. Kenny, the Dude by Patti Frascone

O

n a particularly sweltering midsummer day, I received a call from my husband at the veterinary clinic where I was working. He had been attending a funeral nearby for a fellow Mason. He told me there was an orphaned kitten found at the church, and some kind

could almost get a hand on him and he would slip though my fingers, finding higher and more impossible to access ground. This went on for close to an hour, with me running back into the clinic occasionally to fetch supplies, like leather gloves, food, or tools, and to check on the colleagues that I had abandoned. (They understood, of course.) At this point, the kitten was clearly overheating, open-mouth breathing and drooling. His hisses were becoming less menacing and more pitiful. He Kenny the Dude eventually found his way behind Left, Kenny is the radio. It was impossible for a human arm to follow. My husband is the chivalrous type and temperature had reached a dangerous 105.1. offered to transport the kitten to the hospital Instead of a quick once-over by a vet, he now needed serious medical care. adult heartworms; a contagious virus making him sneeze; was not neutered; and had a tail that was broken long ago. WOW. His treatment plan began with medicine for the easy worms and virus so he could eat and gain strength, followed by an extensive heartworm regimen. Finally he was neutered and had that nuisance of a tail amputated. He could poop without the tail in the way! Honestly he acted relieved it was gone! The almost dead Buddy I found (23 pounds) and the Buddy I have (43 pounds) are two different dogs. At first, he was an escapist and a biter of the electrician, contractor, neighbor, gardener … he didn’t trust anyone. Time passed and now he tugs at the leash to approach people to love on them! I introduce him as Mr. Suck-up! He’s a gentle playmate to my Maltese and Pomeranian, is all muscle running with the Lab, and makes sure that everyone keeps the peace--he stands between anyone, canine or human, when he thinks things are getting too loud or out of hand. That bravery disappears during thunder, and so does Buddy, behind the shower curtain! I get a mix between a kiss and a snarl when I touch his toenails and tell him they need cutting--his expressions are priceless and he makes me laugh so often. The icing on the cake? I never expected that if he ate Science Diet, he would become the handsome tri-color beagle that I always wanted!

t e V e h t Ask

Kelley Gebhardt, DVM

Dr. Kelley Gebhardt graduated from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. While in veterinary school, Dr. Gebhardt worked with cardiologists in researching feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, one of the most common heart conditions of young, male cats. Because of her interest in emergency medicine and alleviating pain in pets, she devoted extra time during veterinary school to studying with emergency/critical care specialists and pain management specialists at the NC State Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Since graduation, Dr. Gebhardt

has worked in both general practice and in emergency medicine. Her passion for emergency medicine inspired her and her family to open the Happy Tails Veterinary Emergency Clinic in February 2008. Dr. Gebhardt is happily married to her husband, Lee Allen (Clinic Director of HTVEC). They share their home with their four furry children – one dog (Nugget) and three cats (TJ Meow Meow, Uno, and Nimbus). In their limited spare time, Dr. Gebhardt and Lee enjoy hiking with their dog, mountain biking, kayaking, and spending time outdoors.

Hot Topics Discussed By Pet Owners in the Veterinary ER

Q A

Why can’t someone tell me over the phone what’s wrong with my pet? First, giving medical advice over the phone (or via the internet) is illegal and prohibited by the NC Veterinary Medical Board. Second, it is very difficult to accurately determine what is wrong with a pet without a full medical history, physical exam, and possible diagnostic tests. Symptoms communicated over the phone are often misleading. For instance, we often have owners call stating that their pet is straining to defecate because they are constipated. When in reality, the pet is straining because they have diarrhea or may actually be straining to urinate. Without obtaining a full medical history and performing an exam, it would not be possible to accurately diagnose the problem.

Q A

Why can’t a veterinary emergency clinic refill medications that were prescribed by my regular veterinarian? It is illegal for a veterinarian to prescribe medication without examining the pet and establishing a veterinary-client-patient relationship. This is required by the DEA and the NC Veterinary Medical Board.

Q A

My sick pet just had blood work sent off by my regular veterinarian, but they won’t have the results back until tomorrow. Why do you need to repeat the blood work? Having the blood work results in the moment allows us to assess your pet’s systemic health, better advise you on what may be causing your pet’s symptoms, and determine the best treatment recommendations.

Q A

Why can’t you access my pet’s medical record from my regular veterinarian? Our veterinary clinic is a completely separate hospital and business from all of the daytime veterinary clinics in the area. While we

work together with your regular veterinarian to provide the best care for your pet, we do not have access to their medical records, x-rays, or computer system; and they do not have access to ours. For this reason, we give you a copy of your pet’s x-rays and fax a complete medical record to your regular veterinarian.

Q A

Why are veterinary emergency clinics so expensive? The pricing for our products and services is very close to what most regular veterinarians charge. Unfortunately, the patients that we see on emergency are often sick or have serious problems (i.e. heart failure, traumatic injuries, toxicities, etc.), which require extensive diagnostics, treatments, and hospitalization. Therefore, a trip to an emergency clinic will almost always be more expensive than a trip to your regular veterinarian for a healthy pet annual exam. Pet insurance is designed to help defray the costs of pet emergencies and is worth considering if you own a pet.

Q A

Why does a pet emergency visit take so long? Veterinary emergency clinics function with a flow similar to human emergency rooms. The sickest and most critically injured patients are seen first. However, we try to see everyone in a timely way. The length of your visit will depend on how many sick or critically injured patients are being seen by the veterinarian. If there are no other patients in the hospital and your pet’s medical needs are minor, your pet may be treated and discharged in less than an hour. However, if there are multiple critically ill or injured patients being seen at the same time, then your visit may be much longer (2-4 hours). We know that emergencies are unexpected and stressful. After all, no one plans an emergency! We always appreciate your patience and understanding while we attend to your pet and to our other patients.

Odin. Hi, I’m Odin.

Boots

My foster mom says I’m full of energy and purrs. I love to wrestle with my friends, chase the laser light, play with my duckie (it even quacks when I hit it!), and play in my tunnel. When I’m tired, I climb into my foster mom’s lap to purr and snuggle. I love to have my ears rubbed! I also try to share my foster mom’s pillow so I can snuggle all night. I also like to watch TV when I’m sleepy. I get along really well with other cats, and I get along with kids and dogs too, as long as they don’t play too rough.

was born around April 6, 2013. He’s a black and white tuxedo short hair kitten with white socks and handsome green eyes. He is one of seven kittens rescued from death row at the Forsyth County Animal Shelter. Boots is one of our tuxedo triplets and the only way you can tell him apart from Jacob is by the black spot on the back of his foot. He is very playful and energetic but loves to pile on Jacob and Faith to sleep.

I want and need structure in my life! I am a love bug and will give you kisses and much love. You can meet me at the AARF adoption fairs on Saturdays from noon until 4 at 311 Harvey Street in Winston Salem. Howie,

Riley

leader of the pack, and a mush at heart. That sums up our little guy Howie. Howie was dumped out in a rural area and no one would claim him until a nice family saved him and called ARFP. We have no clue what Howie is. He has the head of a Basenji and the body of a miniature Husky. He may be 25 lbs. when he is full grown or he may be 50 lbs. Howie is almost crate-trained and is close to becoming house-trained also. He lives with cats and dogs in his foster home and loves to play with both. Born around 2/15/13, Howie is ready to find his forever home.

was born March 1. He loves to play, which he does non-stop until he wears himself out. At that time, he is extremely cuddly. He will lie against your chest and purr endlessly. His foster mom says he is one of the cuddliest foster kittens she has ever had. He enjoys playing with other cats and kittens, as well as small dogs.

Scottie

Winter.

was born in September 2012 to a Pit Bull mix that had 6 happy-go-lucky puppies. Mama had a wonderful personality and the apple did not fall far from the tree. Scottie and his siblings were soon adopted. We received a call from Scottie’s owners that they could no longer keep him due to the family dynamics changing. Scottie is back with ARFP and is still the happy-go-lucky pup we knew. He weighs 55 lbs. and is one big lump of love. Might you be looking for love?

Meet Winter, a snow white New Zealand bunny. He’s a big boy, but what a lover. Born in November 2011, he has always lived in the same home until now. Winter loves people and has always been around people and handled. He is litter-trained and has a great temperament. Come by the Next Step Adoption Center to meet Winter!

Autumn was found

Copper.

wandering at a car dealership in Kernersville. She has never met a stranger. Her foster mom picked her up and she quickly acclimated to her new home. Autumn gets along with other cats. She loves to be with people, likes to be petted and is no trouble at all. In addition to her good looks, she will warm your heart with her sweet and loving ways. Autumn is a 2 year old beautiful brown, white and black Calico. She is current on all her vaccines, spayed and ready for adoption.

This handsome Beagle is Copper! Copper is about 1.5 years old and was found wandering the streets of High Point. Copper is an active dog looking for an active family that can keep up with him. Copper would love for his new family to take him on long walks, hikes, or runs. He would be a great dog for a runner and his foster mom has even taught him to walk on a treadmill. Copper definitely has the “smart” gene in him and seems to learn commands easily. Copper would absolutely love a home with another dog, however, he might be too much for a cat. Copper weighs about 25 lbs. He has been neutered, is up-to-date on shots, and is crate- and house-trained. Want to meet him? Contact ARFP today!

Piper is one of our sweet senior Springers looking for a new Forever Home. She has lovely house manners, walks nicely on a leash, and doesn’t get into mischief if left alone in the house during the day. She’s a little hard of hearing so unleashed activities need to be in a secured area for her safety.

Sam Sam walks on a leash and loves to shop, especially for cat food!

Sam-I-Am is ready to go when you are! He will greet you in the morning with sweet kisses and hugs. Then he’s ready to go to work with you, ride in the cart at the pet store or visit your friends. When you’re ready to play, the wild and crazy kitten takes off! Sam loves other cats and is getting used to dogs. Born in High Point in October, he was trapped as a sickly stray kitten. But Dr. Sheets has fully vetted and “chipped” him, and he’s bursting with vitality and purrsonality. His fosterer can assist with further leash training.

Now that he’s been born (and neutered), Sam reminds you to support spay/neuter by donating to Project BARK and by

Dudley. It’s me, Dudley, stopping in to give you some information about me now that I’ve settled in a bit. Like many Bostons, I’m a class A snuggler. I’m 3 years old and love sleeping between your legs and under the covers (and let me in or I’ll ...paw my way in)! I know my commands and walk very well on a leash. So much so that when I’m on my walks, I don’t even care about what’s going on around me -- I just stop and smell the roses. I get along with my foster sister and Boston Terrier Rescue of NC we love a good rousing game of tug or chase. I’m a laid back fella just looking to share my heart with you. Are you that person?? RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com

Curious George was found all by himself on the side of the road. Today, Curious George is doing great in his foster home. He has adjusted well and is running up and down the stairs just fine now. He is a typical kitten...very curious and ready to inspect everything. He is also very playful, and loves wrestling with his stuffed tiger. When he gets tired he climbs on your lap for a snooze and he loves to snuggle. Visit www.reddogfarm.com for more information! n

Sassy

Lucy Lou is an adventurous young kitten who loves to run, jump, play with the dogs and cat and then curl up in your lap for a nap. She is litter box trained and comes when called with treats. She would love to have a home with a dog or cat sibling to play with. Visit our website at www.reddogfarm.com for more details! n

Oakley.

and her sister, Burrito (not shown), came to Red Dog Farm this past December and both were very timid and scared of people. Today this pair has become two of the most entertaining teenager kittens we have ever seen. Sassy (full name Sasquatch) got her name because of her big personality and big paws. She is a funny cat that loves to play with her toys. Sassy and Burrito are a very bonded pair and need to be adopted together. They don’t seem to mind children, other cats or dogs.

Don’t let her age fool you; Oakley is still a young girl at heart. This 11 year old girl came to us when her owner had to move and could no longer care for her. Oakley is a sweet girl and would love a family to dote on her in her senior years. She is up-to-date on vaccines, spayed, and microchipped. Oakley is in great health and has lots of kisses to give her family.

If you are interested in adopting Sassy and Burrito, please visit our website at www.reddogfarm.com for more information! n

Angel

PJ

was surrendered to us two years ago by an owner who would otherwise have been charged by animal control with neglect. She came to us very skinny and suffered a broken pelvis at some point in life and therefore may not ever be ridden or bred. She is comfortable in her daily life but her pelvis is not strong enough to support a rider or a pregnancy. She’ll make a gorgeous pasture pet or companion horse. Angel has figured out that she absolutely LOVES humans, especially anyone who will scratch her or brush her mane. She will stand perfectly still for as long as you will pet her. She will make such a wonderful pet for someone willing to give her lots of attention.

(shown here with her friend ) came to Red Dog Farm after being found in a garage in Kernersville. The couple that found her checked with all of their neighbors and could not find her owners. PJ is very young and tame; we think someone let her go because they no longer wanted her. Domesticated rabbits cannot survive in the wild on their own. PJ and Ms. Parker have become good friends but can be adopted together or separately!

Haichi is a petite little lass who was surrendered, along with her companion Onyx, to the Tri-County Animal Shelter. We think she might have been surrendered because she was heartworm positive. She is good with dogs, cats, kids and someone definitely spent a lot of time training and socializing her. Haichi is very smart and affectionate. She is housetrained, crate-trained, OK on leash, Photo courtesy of Sue Baker Photography knows “come” “sit” “stay” and “leave German Shepherd Rescue & Adoptions it”. Hector is an 8 year old Golden with a reddish coat. He weighs 68 lbs. and is very active for his age. His foster reports he was probably an outside dog because he will often lie by the door as if waiting to go out and he clearly likes to Triad Golden Retriever Rescue be outside. However, when inside, he is calm. He waits patiently on his quilt for the foster to return home and can be trusted in the house alone. Brody would do well with older children who like Almost Home to run and play outside in a fenced Dachshund Rescue yard, or another dog he can play with, as long as the dog is not big. NEW SCIQUARIUM FEATURES

Rare Fishing Cat that Swims By: Glenn Dobrogosz, Executive Director Greensboro Science Center

isitors taking their first steps past the mysteriously lit entrance corridor inside the all-new Carolina SciQuarium at the Greensboro Science Center (GSC) will not see schools of fish, eels or a shark in the first animal exhibit as they would expect. Instead, they will see a shadowy, plant and rock-filled habitat containing an adorable kitty cat. Yes a cat! This is no ordinary kitty cat. In fact, it is not a kitty cat at all. We’d like to introduce you to the first-ever cat exhibit in an aquarium — the Asian Fishing Cat. Fishing cats (Prionailurus viverrinus) are an internationally-endangered species managed by a Species Survival Plan through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Historic fishing cat populations ranged from the rocky, high elevations of Pakistan into and throughout Southeast Asia. The fishing cat is a medium-size wild cat with brownish gray fur intermixed with darker lines and spots. Its color and patterns camouflage perfectly in both rocky and forest habitats. Males weigh around 25 pounds and females weigh about 15 pounds. Head and body length averages 25 to 34 inches. These cats have a long, stocky body, relatively short legs, a broad head, round ears, and a short, flattened tail that they may use like a rudder to help control its direction in the water when swimming. Unlike most cats, fishing cats love the water and are skilled swimmers. About three-fourths of their diet consists of aquatic spe-

In the wild, they adapted to their surroundings and learned to catch their aquatic prey in two ways. Most commonly, they creep along the edge of a swamp or stream swatting at and seizing fish or frogs in the shallows. However, the cats are strong swimmers and will submerge into deeper waters to physically hunt for fish using their extremely sharp and recurved claws. When building the Carolina SciQuarium, the Greensboro Science Center had to be highly selective and cost-conscious with regard to the species it chose to exhibit and breed as part of this expansion since the budget was only $10 million (the average Aquarium costs $65 million to build). The GSC also had to find ways to be unique and different from other aquariums by exhibiting animals that are both “tried and tested” (penguins, otters and sharks) and some visitors would never expect to see, like the fishing cat. Fishing cats tell a unique story about life and survival. For a cat to learn to love the water is a pretty amazing transformation. The story of the fishing cat reminds us all that being different is what makes life rich and magnificent. Tallulah, the fishing cat on exhibit at the Carolina SciQuarium and pictured here, can be seen daily from 9am to 5pm. If you’re lucky when you visit, you may see this rare cat catching fish in the water or even taking a swim in the pool. Special Feature

Best in Show! By Kim Thore

F

inding unique ways to support great causes is not always easy. Tightening budgets and the need for community support seem to compete. Local animal rescues and supporters sometimes have to think outside of the proverbial box to find ways to engage the community and drum up much needed funds. For any of the millions of viewers of shows like “America’s Got Talent”, “The Voice”, and “The X Factor”…it’s easy to see that we, as a society, are fascinated by the talent among us. So when it came time to conceive of the next fundraiser for the Forsyth Humane Society it made sense to tap into the diverse and immense talent found right here in the Triad. Board member Candide Jones thought that merging the talented performers of our area with a great cause seemed to be a wonderful way to try something new that would have mass appeal. “We have had over the years our traditional fundraisers, but this year we wanted to do something a little different. Something that many people could take part in and support the mission of the Forsyth Humane Society. We came up with Best in Show! and we’re excited about the opportunity to showcase the talent here” This regional event draws on talent of every genre, from singing and dancing to dog acts and stand up. Best in Show! will give animal and entertainment lovers of all ages an evening of fun for a great cause; on-line videos of contestants and on-line voting will ensure wide community appeal, and the bonus? The first place winner will win a $1,000.00 cash prize!

The Humane Society’s work includes a “no kill” adoption center, educational outreach programs, spay and neuter assistance to help reduce overpopulation, and their Leash on Life dog training program at the minimum security prison in Winston Salem. The work of the Humane Society needs community support and this year’s fundraiser is designed to not only support the ongoing programs, but address future opportunities of the FHS. “We have many ideas of how we can help our community’s animals and we want to expand our outreach. It’s events like Best in Show! that help us reach those goals”, noted Jones. Have a special talent and want to support the Humane Society? It’s easy, and just think, you may just be the star of the show!

Kendall is a male

years old. I was turned into Animal Control after I was found wandering around a public park. I love to be petted and sitting in your lap. Chasing a ball and bringing it back to you over and over is my game. I know how to sit, and my foster mom says that I walk very well on a leash. I love to run around my foster mom’s big fenced in back yard and play with the other Chihuahua Rescue foster dogs. My foster mom cannot believe that someone would just abandon me, because I am so good. I prefer women and am scared of men. I am UTD on shots, neutered and HW negative. I need to be adopted by someone with an alpha personality because I can be a bit bossy if you let me. If you would like to adopt me, please fill out an application and submit it and someone will get back to you.

Honey is a 4-year-old yellow Lab. She is small (about 45 lbs., probably due to being starved) but has a big personality and great sense of humor. She has recovered remarkably well from a tough past, including neglect and undernourishment, and now is happy, healthy, and Lab Rescue of NC super sweet. Honey is almost always smiling, wagging her tail, and ready to give gentle kisses. She is definitely a people dog but does well with other dogs, including her foster sister, a 4-year-old chocolate Lab. She has not been around cats. She loves toys, balls, dog beds, treats, going for walks, running around in the yard, and chasing rabbits and squirrels.

Lael & Manx. These two Dobers came to Elijah’s House recently from a home where an older woman and her brother had lived together. The brother died a while back and now the Doberman Rescue of the Triad sister has become bedridden. Obviously the dogs had to go. These dogs are mid-life and better (6 and 8 years old), and our hearts compel us to place them together due to their age and the bond between them. They are very, very gentle, loving Doberkids. They both love to sleep on the bed or couch, if allowed. They are a joy when out riding in the car, and both jump in and out of the SUV without difficulty. They are also good on lead. I

by Helen Williams

t was the Saturday before Thanksgiving 2007 as our family headed to Target on Lawndale. Outside PetSmart was Happy Hills Animal Foundation with a group of dogs all bouncing around and getting lots of attention from shoppers. One little guy was lying with his head on his paws, with only his handler nearby. I stopped to pet him and asked the lady what his story was. She told me that Max was 10 years old and had been adopted from Happy Hills Animal Foundation as a puppy. He had spent the next 10 years with his family, only to be surrendered after a divorce and a subsequent remarriage where the new spouse would not have him as part of the family. We talked and petted him and then went on our way. All day Saturday and Sunday I worried about Max and the uncertain future he had. I was so angry at the family for just tossing Max to the side when their situation had changed. I only had cats before and had no idea what dog ownership entailed, especially

Hills and told them we wanted to adopt Max. They did the background checks and called me the next day to say he was ours. I drove with my children to the shelter in Staley on Thanksgiving Eve. The children rushed to Max and flung their arms around him, hugging and patting him. The workers at Happy Hills had tears in their eyes and said they knew Max was going to a good home. Max is 15 years now and will turn 16 in November. He walks everyday with me and his canine companion Marley, 10 years Max his junior. Interview with

CESAR MILLAN Advice for the Pack Leaders By Lauren Riehle

C

esar Millan has been inspiring dog owners for years to be a pack leader for their dogs. Below, we asked him a few of our favorite questions in order to remind ourselves what it means to be a pack leader and to get his best advice for doing so. Some answers you think you might know, while others might just surprise you. WHAT IS YOUR #1 PIECE OF ADVICE FOR DOG OWNERS? Dogs reflect the energy of their pack, and if your dog

is misbehaving the first place to look for an answer is in your own behavior. If you’re not balanced and in control, your dog won’t be, and if every human in the household isn’t a Pack Leader to the dog, then the dog will try to take over and dominate the humans who aren’t leading. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE THAT DOG OWNERS MAKE? Treating their dogs like they’re human children, and

expecting them to act like little people instead of what they are — dogs. This doesn’t mean not to love our dogs, of course. We just have to show it in a dog’s way, not a human’s way. Dogs need to work for food and affection, and need to know what’s expected of them and their place in the pack. Trouble happens when people give their dogs nothing but affection, affection, affection. This is why my fulfillment formula for dogs is, “Exercise, Discipline, and then Affection, in that order.” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT WITH A DOG? There have been many, and every time I see a

person “get it” and suddenly have that better relationship with

44

July 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

their dog, I consider it a big accomplishment. One of my favorite successes with a dog, though, was in Singapore. This little dog named Mango had been left at a shelter seven years earlier, and in all that time was too frightened to leave his kennel. I was finally able to coax him out, and we discovered that he loved swimming. He and I also discovered the streets of Singapore together when I took him rollerblading. Since then, he loves to go on walks and explore the world outside his kennel. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST FRUSTRATING CASE FOR YOU? I would say most frustrating cases, because they always have

the same cause and the same result. If the human will not listen to me and change their approach and behavior, then I will not be able to rehabilitate their dog. It does happen sometimes, when people are unwilling to admit that they are partly to blame for their dog’s bad behavior. They expect me to wave my hand and magically fix their dog, but it doesn’t work that way. If you want your dog’s behavior to change, you have to look at yourself first, then change yourself. HAS THERE EVER BEEN A TIME THAT YOU COULDN’T HELP WITH A DOG’S BEHAVIORAL ISSUES? Besides the

times that the humans wouldn’t change, I did meet one dog that I knew I couldn’t work with because he was into what I call redzone aggression. Meaning, I could tell by looking that the dog had already decided it would kill me if it had a chance, and it was just trying to figure out where to hit me to take me down. But that kind of problem is extremely rare. This was one of maybe two or three dogs out of hundreds and hundreds in my entire career that I knew I couldn’t rehabilitate.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE DOG “RESCUERS”/ FOSTERS TO KNOW? / WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM? I would like them to know that they are doing fantastic,

valuable work in saving unwanted dogs and giving them a second chance. I’ve met a lot of people who do rescue work or who foster dogs, and their dedication and commitment is inspiring. My advice to them is to keep on doing what they’re doing, and help to spread the word — about the plight of shelter dogs, the canine overpopulation problem, and the importance of spaying and neutering. But, most importantly, spread the word that shelters everywhere are full of wonderful dogs looking for loving, permanent homes, and that 99.999% of shelter dog “issues” can be easily fixed. I cannot thank the rescuers and the people who foster dogs enough for what they do. WHAT WOULD YOU TELL AN OVERWHELMED DOG OWNER? Stay calm and forget for now what you want your dog to

do. Instead, listen to what your dog is telling you. Be in the moment and observe and let go of frustration. Remember, your dog is not intentionally misbehaving just to make you angry. Your dog is acting in a certain way because certain needs are not being met. Is he racing around anxiously, bouncing off the walls? Then you need to exercise that dog to reduce the excess energy. Is she demanding and pushy, perhaps jumping on people at the dinner table or constantly bothering you when you’re trying to do something? Then you haven’t set the proper rules, boundaries, and limitations. When you have an idea of what your dog is trying to tell you, then you can begin the process of fulfilling that need and achieving control as Leader of the Pack. WHAT IS THE ONE THING WE AS A COMMUNITY CAN DO TO SUPPORT OUR LOCAL SHELTER DOGS? The most

important is “adopt, don’t shop.” When you’re looking for a dog, go to a shelter, and don’t insist on a particular breed or on having a puppy. Look at all of the dogs, find the one that matches your

lifestyle and energy — and don’t forget that older dogs make wonderful additions to the household and may be calmer. And don’t overlook dogs that may be handicapped in some way — missing a leg, blind, deaf, etc. Dogs do not sit around feeling sorry for themselves over such things. They just adapt and get on with life. They aren’t less of a dog because of this — but dogs like this will teach you to be more of a person. The other important part is “spay or neuter your dogs.” Okay, I know that’s two things. But both of them together will help shelter dogs because they will reduce the number of shelter dogs overall and help make no-kill a reality everywhere. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DOG ACTIVITY BESIDES ROLLERBLADING? Anything that gets us all working together

as a pack. I love going on hikes in the hills around the Dog Psychology Center with all of the dogs, off-leash and, when it’s not so hot out, we turn the hike into a pack run. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR DOWNTIME? When I have some downtime, I’ll let you know. Ask me again in about twenty years!

We hope you have been re-inspired to be a pack leader for yourself, your dog, and your community. It takes everyone to help make a difference and we hope you will join us! For more ways to get involved, check out your local shelter or rescue group.

Training Your Pet

Dogs + Insanity = Anarchy By Adam Witherspoon

T

o begin this article let’s examine a couple of definitions. INSANITY - To do the same action over and over and expect a different result. ANARCHY - A state of lawlessness and disorder usually the result of poor leadership or government. So many times we see a dog owner’s problems are a direct result of that person practicing insanity almost religiously. Example: Mary Jane walks in to the Vet’s office with Fido and the dog is jumping constantly on her, pulling on the leash, and simply refuses to quit barking. All the while Mary Jane tells the dog, “No No! You sit down and stop it!” The dog continues it’s barrage of unorganized behavior and once again, “No No! You sit down and stop it!” Nothing changes. Neither the address of the behavior from the owner, or the dog’s behavior itself. Yet the owner will continue to do the same thing over and over, and then blame the dog, and try to hold the dog accountable for its actions. This leads to Anarchy in its truest sense. A TOTAL state of lawlessness and disorder. When I take the leash, usually it all stops, because I usually do something different. Get the dog walking, use a light leash correction, and whatever I do, I simply will not talk to the dog, and the owner looks at me like I am some kind of miracle worker. Bottom line - change what you are doing if you want to change your dog’s behavior. If the old way isn’t working, what do you have to lose by trying something new? Remember, your dog can’t rationalize through human 46

communication what you want the dog to do. You have to take the responsibility to communicate with the dog in its native language… Doginese, and then reinforce that behavior by letting the dog know that is a good thing he or she did! Where do we start? THE LEASH! As a trainer, I have entered so many homes where the dog is just running around wildly, out of control, and the owner tolerates this behavior, until they are ready to pull every hair out individually, and SCREAM! Often times you don’t need a dog trainer, you don’t need a behavior specialist, WHAT YOU NEED IS A LEASH! Simply putting a leash on your dog, can often times eliminate the largest of problem behaviors, yet VERY few dog owners will do this. Also, so many people talk to their dogs incessantly. This is something I will never understand. Does anyone think their dog will truly understand you better if you tell a dog to do something 15 times? Seriously, put a leash on the dog, stand there, do nothing and you will succeed. It may take 20 times of doing it, but it will work better than doing what folks have been doing for years and years, only serving to employ dog trainers all over the world (which is good for me!!), but really not necessary. You are better off to do no training than bad training, and if you don’t get the results you are looking for, then it is bad training. So as my father used to tell me K.I.S.S.

July 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

…the dog is jumping constantly on her, pulling on the leash, and simply refuses to quit barking… it! Keep it simple silly!! If your dog is giving you a problem, keep things simple, stop talking to the dog and give light tugs on the leash to achieve effective communication. This isn’t the solution for every problem, but train yourself to do something different, and walk away from the world of Anarchy.
