THERAPEUTIC LASER FOR YOUR PET The benefits of the K-Laser in decreasing pain and inflammation and promoting healing are tremendous. Personally, I have experienced the benefits of K-Laser through my chiropractor and truly believe in the same potential benefits for our veterinary patients. For years, I have suffered from severe back pain and joint issues. On days when I can barely walk into the chiropractor’s office, I am 80% to 90% improved and less painful after a single K-Laser treatment. It is an amazing therapeutic tool.

What is laser therapy? Laser (light) therapy is a technique used in both human and veterinary medicine to promote healing through a process called “photobiomodulation”. Therapeutic laser is different from a surgical laser. When injured tissues are treated with the infrared and near infrared light of a therapeutic laser, the body produces a natural healing response. The laser does not cut or damage tissues. Treatment with therapeutic laser significantly decreases pain and inflammation, reduces muscle spasms, increases circulation, improves flexibility and function, promotes healing, and reduces symptoms associated with arthritis. The K-Laser is unique in that it is more powerful than other therapeutic lasers and uses three different wavelengths of infrared light, which allows for deeper penetration into the body to more effectively treat areas such as your pet’s spine, hip, and deeper muscles. It also uses visible red

light, which is excellent for treatment of superficial wounds. Another great advantage of laser therapy is that it is a soothing, pain free, non-invasive, and drug-free treatment option. There are also no negative side effects. Each treatment can be completed in less than 10-15 minutes and can be done while your pet is fully awake. It is an excellent therapeutic tool to use alone or as part of an integrative approach in conjunction with medication or surgery to address your pet’s needs.

What problems can improve with laser therapy? The clinical applications for K-laser therapy are nearly limitless in both acute and chronic conditions. The following is a brief list of conditions that can benefit from laser therapy. However, the potential applications for laser therapy are limitless! • Arthritis

• Bladder inflammation

• Acute/chronic pain and inflammation

• Ear infections

• Soft tissue injury (sprain, strain)

• Anal gland infections

• Cruciate ligament injury

• Snake bites

• Herniated disks (IVDD)

• Bite wounds

• Fractures

• Abscesses

• Wounds

• Post-surgical pain

• Skin infection

• Feline acne

• Lick granulomas • Dental pain

How many laser treatments will my pet need? The number of treatments each pet will need depends on the underlying problem and the individual pet’s response to treatment. Some pets will feel an immediate benefit and may only need one or two treatments. For more severe, chronic problems, some pets may require multiple treatments to experience the maximum benefit. To establish a treatment plan specific to your pet’s needs, your pet must be examined by one of our doctors. After a treatment plan is established, the laser treatments are performed as a brief outpatient procedure. As an emergency clinic, we work in conjunction with your regular veterinarian to provide your pet with the best care possible. We frequently use laser therapy for acute problems that present on emergency and recommend continued laser therapy through your regular veterinarian. If your regular veterinarian does not yet have laser therapy for ongoing treatment, we have cost effective laser packages for your pet to continue laser treatment through Happy Tails. All primary care would be continued through your regular veterinarian. Please ask your regular veterinarian if your pet could benefit from this non-invasive, drug free, pain relief treatment option!

Help Us Raise the Woof By Brenda Overman

T

he time has come for a new “green” no-kill animal rescue facility for Greensboro and the surrounding area, and the SPCA of the Triad needs you to help us RAISE THE “WOOF” to make that a reality! For 21 years, the SPCA has served the Triad, matching many animals with happy families. However, what goes on before the animal is ready for adoption is why we need and ask for your continued and ongoing support to build a state-of-the-art no-kill rescue for our deserving animals. Over the last year alone, we have had close to 300 animals in need come into our program, however, we receive just as many heartbreaking calls and emails about so many animals that we simply cannot accommodate. Our board of directors recently had plans drawn up for a facility that would enable us to protect and help many more companion animals in a safe and friendly environment conducive to the best health practices available, but we need funding to give life to

We cannot save them all, it takes everyone working together to make a difference. We can strive to do the best for needy animals going forward, and we can all make a difference one animal at a time. Please be a part of this exciting project, which cannot happen without you. We receive no funding from the ASPCA, as well as no government funding. We depend on generous public donations instead. Sid’s Story

Sid is one lucky puppy. He was found behind a dumpster—very bloated, lethargic, and near death. After close evaluation, we came to the conclusion that Sid had been born without an anus. We rushed him into emergency surgery with Dr. Fidele Byungara at Sheets Pet Clinic. Sid had somehow managed to survive his first six weeks of life so we knew that if anybody could overcome this, Sid could. Sid has since undergone two surgeries. $3,000 later, Sid now has a brand new anus of his own. He is living under the care of his fantastic foster mother, Laura Lanier. Unfortunately, Sid recently encountered some intestinal routing issues and his urine sometimes comes out though his anus. Dr. Fidele will be performing the third, and hopefully final, surgery in the upcoming weeks. This will be an additional $1,000 that we simply do not have. Our supporters’ donations have saved his life thus far! We cannot do this without you. Please help us continue giving Sid the second chance at life that he deserves. Visit www.gofundme.com/savingsweetsid to donate to Sid’s cause and learn more about his journey.

Bea’s Story

Bea was a lonely, pitiful little stray Lhasa Apso that was found on the train tracks in Kernersville. When she came into our program, her hair was severely overgrown with feces matted into her skin and she was covered in sores. Her white blood count was low and she was full of worms. She was covered in demodectic mange from head to toe. Bea is such a lucky girl to have found the Walsh family. They fostered her for a couple months, nursing her back to health with the help of their fantastic veterinarian, Dr. Scott Mortenson. Four year old Shila came to our shelter severely underweight and she immediately became a staff and volunteer favorite. Shila would love a home that allows her confidence to blossom and be someone’s best friend. Shila enjoys reading the Sunday paper, is self-taught playing the piano and wants to learn to paint watercolors. Looking to add a very creative dog to your family?

Would You Like an All Natural Way to Manage Your Pet’s Allergies? Atopic dermatitis (allergies to environmental allergens) is the second most common allergy of dogs and cats. It means animals have developed an allergy to environmental pollens, molds, house dust mites and other common airborne substances. The most common symptoms of canine and feline atopic dermatitis include itching, scratching, licking and chewing the feet, legs and any other part of their body excessively, rubbing on the furniture, carpet or walls, hair loss, foul odor from the skin, scaling and flaking. Atopic dermatitis is genetic and occurs when a pet’s immune system reacts abnormally to allergens which are inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Symptoms can occur during the spring to fall seasons or all year round. Unfortunately, once pets develop allergies they usually worsen with each year. Pets do not grow out of atopic dermatitis, but instead, get worse with age.

Management of Atopic Dermatitis There are numerous treatment options for atopic dermatitis. Most of them include medications such as prednisone (steroid), antihistamines, Atopica (cyclosporine), and Apoquel which help provide temporary relief of allergy symptoms. These symptomatic treatments only address the animal’s symptoms and require long-term use with possible long-term side effects. None address the underlying disease or stop the progression of the allergy. Thus your pet’s allergies can gradually worsen over time despite being on these medications.

Now, The All Natural Way to Manage Atopic Dermatitis Allergen Specific Immunotherapy is the only treatment known to actually alter the course of the disease, rather than mask the symptoms. It builds up your pet’s immunity to allergens through a

series of injections or oral drops with increasingly larger doses of an allergy serum specifically formulated to your pet’s sensitivities. This treatment is effective for allergies associated with pollen, molds and house dust mites. This is NOT a medication, this is a natural solution that does not “cover up” or suppress your pet’s immune system. Allergen specific immunotherapy works to regulate (or normalize) the immune system naturally using small amounts of the naturally-occurring allergen(s). Immunotherapy is believed to change the pet’s actual allergic response, it is the only treatment that can prevent a worsening of your pet’s allergies. Over time, immunotherapy can lead to a long-term solution for an animal’s allergies. The best part of immunotherapy is it has been shown to have no long-term side effects.

How is Allergen Specific Immunotherapy Formulated? Allergen Specific Immunotherapy (allergy serum) is formulated from the results of an allergy test. Allergy testing can be done by either intradermal testing (skin testing) or by blood testing. It identifies which trees, weeds, grasses, molds and house dust mites are causing the skin problems or allergy symptoms. The gold standard is the intradermal testing. Numerous studies have repeatedly shown this test to be more accurate than blood testing. This form of testing is usually only available through board certified dermatologists. These specialists have been trained through residency programs and years of practice to perform and read the test results in order to formulate the serum accurately.

Two Forms of Allergen Specific Immunotherapy Administration Allergy Specific Immunotherapy (allergy serum) used to be administered through injections only. These were small needles with small amounts of the allergy serum which was administered into the subcutaneous tissue (fatty tissue) on the back of the neck of the pet. Now there is oral immunotherapy (Sublingual Drops). Oral immunotherapy has been proven to be just as efficacious as injections. It is much easier to administer and readily accepted by the pet. Oral immunotherapy is dispensed out of a pump, right into the pet’s mouth, then absorbed through the mucous membranes. Typically it is given every day or sometimes twice daily. At our clinic we have had extremely good results with our oral formulations. Many patients are getting relief from their symptoms within a few months of treatment. We are even seeing some patients who have previously failed injectable immunotherapy have success with oral immunotherapy. If you would like more information or have questions about allergies, please call us at Animal Allergy and Ear Clinic at 503-574-4150. We can provide help and answer any questions you may have. I work out of Happy Tails Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Greensboro one week of each month, however, you can call my office at any time.

Harry

Garin.

was born on January 14, 2015 with Cerebella Hypoplasia. His cerebellum didn’t fully develop before birth. It causes him to be off balance and to have head tremors. Harry was the runt of the litter born to mama Ava of Animal Rescue and Foster Program with his five other litter mates. Harry was taken to the vet at five weeks and received his diagnosis. He was pulled from his mama Ava to be bottle fed to give him a better chance to catch up. Little Harry is now a happy and healthy puppy, just a little bouncy.

Hi, I’m Garin, named after the first man in space! I’m an intrepid explorer and will explore any new bookshelf, desk, or chair that I come across. Then, I’ll sit on your lap and tell you all about it while you pet me and I purr. They say I’m a bit of a talker, but it’s just because I have so much to say. The world must know what I’ve seen! I was born March 20, 2015 and am current on my vaccinations.

Kyle.

Meet Kova.

Sit and fetch... Belly rubs and naps... Playtime and meal time...This is the life of Kylie. Born last November, Kylie is loving every minute of life in her ARFP foster home. Kylie once roamed the streets, and now is enjoying a plush life complete with her choice of dog beds to curl up in. With a sweet personality that will steal your heart, Kylie is the perfect companion and addition to your home. She loves everyone, including the four-legged friends that she has made in her foster home. Thinking of adding a family member? We are pretty sure that Kylie is the perfect match.

I’m named after the first woman to travel into space! That’s pretty cool, huh? Well, I’m not really looking to go to space. Unless by space you mean your lap. Then, yeah, I’ll go there. And purr. I love being petted and your lap is the best place to make that happen. I was born March 20, 2015 and am current on my vaccinations.

RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com

Max

Truman,

is a 25-30 year old Amazon that came to Red Dog Farm when his owner realized she could no longer properly care for him. Please excuse his bad feather day! He decided to molt right before coming to us and is starting to get new feathers in. We promised him that we would post better pictures once all of his new feathers come in. The typical Amazon, he likes to talk, sing songs, be included in your day and randomly be left alone. He enjoys musicals and Disney movies. Don’t forget to share your popcorn! This gentleman is sort of set in his ways. He enjoys a good scratch but is learning to step up again.

known to his friends as B.T., is a fluffy and kind-hearted dog that will easily wiggle his way into the heart of any family. He is well-trained, lovable and playful. BT loves interacting with new people and dogs (not sure on cats or other small animals yet), and he adores children. This dog has a very goofy side and will make you laugh throughout the day with his hilarious quirks and snorts. He’s looking for somebody to give his love to and he has a lot to give! This sweet boy is updated on vaccines, neutered, microchipped and ready to warm his way into your heart today.

If you are interested in giving this guy a new home, please fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Lulu

This past winter, during a major storm, a family witnessed Hobo fall into a frozen lake. When they finally found him he walked right up to them and crawled into a cat carrier. Since then Hobo wants nothing to do with being outside and is actually quite the affectionate guy. He is very friendly and must have been someone’s companion at one point. He has adjusted very well to a home environment and has been neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia. Hobo is now about 11 months old but still acts like a playful kitten. He is very talkative and just wants attention and companionship. Now all this sweet boy needs is to find his forever family to keep him warm and safe.

Hobo.

is looking for her forever home because her family had to move and could not take her with them. She loves people, doesn’t mind dogs and is spayed! What more could you ask for in a bunny? Nothing! Lulu would be a good rabbit for a first time bunny owner. We encourage anyone looking to adopt an animal to do their research and talk with experts on the care of the animal. Our rabbit volunteers would be happy to answer any questions that you might have.

If you are interested in adopting Hobo, please fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

If this girl has torn at your heartstrings, you can apply to adopt her by filling out the adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Peaches

Sulli

came to us when her owner could no longer care for her. She is a potbellied pig who is extremely overweight. In fact, when our veterinarian examined her and trimmed her hooves this week, he determined that she is actually completely unable to see right now due to the fat around her eyes. She needs an owner who is committed to the strict diet that she is now on. She is a sweet girl and will feel so much better after she loses a significant amount of weight.

is a 14 year old quarter horse who came to us when his owners could no longer afford his care. He had to have an eye removed due to a mass that had grown on it but he has now healed and looks great. Horses generally do just fine after losing one eye. We are told that he has been ridden and shown but that it has been a while, so we will have our trainer work with him to see what he remembers. What a handsome guy! Sulli is doing well in his training under saddle.

If you are interested in adopting Peaches, please fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Tilley

is a lucky girl to have been found by one of our dedicated board members. She was found in very bad condition with a broken, bloody jaw. At first we thought she had been hit by a car but the veterinarian said the trauma was quite centralized on her mouth. She is more than likely a victim of a physical animal abuse attack. Tilly is very sweet and loves to be petted and sit in your lap. You would never know she lived through such a horrific event. She needs a fur-ever hero! Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Jenny

is a very lucky little girl. With the help of a sponsorship from American Pack Supply, we rescued Jenny on what was scheduled to be her last day of life at a local county animal shelter. She is a 6 month-old mixed breed pup. Jenny is very sweet and great with other dogs. She is a smaller medium sized girl and will probably not get too much bigger than she is now. Are you Jenny’s fur-ever hero? Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Allegra

Goldilocks.

She’s as innocent and curious as the storybook character! This spunky pup is very people-oriented and friendly. “Goldi” is a 6 month old solid blonde Hound mix. She’s got a long body and adorable big Hound ears. She is very gentle with children and humans of all ages. She also gets along great with other dogs and puppies. Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

Regis

is as black as the night and sweet as your Grandma’s cherry pie! He is such a people cat. He craves interaction, attention, and affection. Regis was found as a lonely stray here in Greensboro. If you’re looking for a cuddly kitty then you must meet Mr. Regis! Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n

James.

is cute as a button! She is very petite so she looks almost like a kitten with her small frame and little legs. She is independent, intelligent, and so loving. Allegra loves to talk and be around other kitty cats. She is shy around large crowds of people so a more quiet home would be ideal for little Allegra. Are you Allegra’s hero?

We rescued James from a family that just had a baby and wasn’t able to give James the attention and love that he deserves. He is solid gray with the tiniest splash of white on his chest. James is great with other cats and even kids. He is a total lap cat with lots of gentle love to give to a lucky family.

Ally was found as a stray kitty in a volunteer’s neighborhood. She had a visible injury to her tail, and it had to be amputated when we got her to the vet. Once the volunteer got her inside, Ally was stuck to humans like velcro! She LOVES to “make biscuits” while sitting in your lap and is very content laying with her human. Ally is playful and loves toys, uses the litter box very well, and is loving life indoors!

ANIMAL ADOPTION & RESCUE FOUNDATION 336.768.7387 / www.aarfanimals.org

Alfalfa.

Hi my name is Alfalfa. I’m a little boy, the fuzziest and fattest of all the Our Gang kittens! I am very adventurous and love hiding in boxes and exploring in general. I am very unique— when I was born I had a bend in my tail but it doesn’t affect me negatively—just makes me even more special. I like to talk to you when you pick me up to play! I am a long haired kitty and love to cuddle once I wind down from play time! I was born about April 4, 2015. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston-Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Sage

is a sweetheart! She is the mom of 3 beautiful babies and is ready for her forever home. Sage is very loving, a laid back cat with a gentle spirit. She’s up-to-date on her vaccinations and will be spayed in a few weeks. Date of birth: 6/1/2014.

You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Ronnie

is a loving little snuggler. He is a little shy at first but after a few minutes he warms up and shows more of his true personality. He loves to be held and petted. He’ll purr like a little lawnmower. He was left at AARF when his owner died in June 2013. Ronnie is a fairly small medium haired cat with a lovely black plume of a tail and a few black and gray markings on his head. He is neutered and gets along with other cats. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Charlie

is a great kitty. He has a fantastic personality and is very loving. He was bottle fed as a baby and loves to be around his human. He will lift his little arms up for you to pick him up! He is up-to-date on his shots and is looking for a forever home. Date of birth: 3/15/15. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Aurora.

Hello, my name is Aurora. I’m a DSH Siamese female with no tail. I was born on April 26, 2015. My mom, Calypso, had me and my siblings on an elderly lady’s porch who was nice enough to call AARF so we had a chance at finding forever homes. I’m a beautiful little girl who likes to be petted and I’ll climb up my foster mom to let her know that I want attention. I also enjoy crawling into her lap to take a nap. You can meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Valentine is a cute silver tabby with white bib and paws. She was found near a dumpster and rescued by an AARF volunteer. She loves other cats and would like a home with other pets. She’s very active and has “no fears”! She was born in mid June 2014 and is spayed and current on shots. Visit www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption process. n

Photos courtesy of Terri Burke, Catch a Spark Photography. 7-month old sisters Evie & Nina adore being outdoors, taking walks and playing. Evie likes to knit and read, while sister Nina enjoys a more active lifestyle playing soccer. Women’s World Cup fans take note; Nina is ready to be your goalkeeper!

Beauty and intelligence come with age, so it’s hard to understand that 4-year Scarlet is still waiting for a loving home. Another volunteer favorite, Scarlet has been on many local outings, enjoys car rides, always greets people with a smile and is housetrained. She’s ready to hang out with the kids after camp, help with homework during the school year and return all movies to Dropbox!

Grizzly Humane Society of Davie County

Hello there! My name is Grizzly. My estimated date of birth is 02/26/2015. I may look a little like a bear, but I have a heart of gold. A good grooming, and hey, I could get my own TV show. People say I have “soulful” eyes, I don’t know what that means, but I think it’s good! I am a lively puppy who likes to play outside. I would love a new family with a big yard to play in. I can be a little chatty, but I am willing to work on it. I am ready to find my forever home!

If you are interested in stopping by the adoption center to meet our Grizzly or any of the other wonderful animals, fill out an application on our website: www.davienchumane.org or call 336.751.5214.

All of her puppies have been adopted and now Bea is ready for her forever home! She is smart, sweet and very loving. She loves to play The Fort Rescue fetch with her stuffed rabbit, but also enjoys snuggling on the couch or in bed. She would make the perfect companion for someone looking for a best friend! Bea would do best as the only pet in the household. She is house-trained, spayed, and current on all vaccinations.

Won’t Somebody Help Us Please. . . Find a Cure for this Disease?

Finding the Cure for DM Foundation, Inc. www.cure4dm.org • A 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization Canine Degenerative Myelopathy (DM), also known as Chronic Degenerative Radiculomyelopathy (CDRM), is an incurable, progressive disease of the canine spinal cord that mimics the symptoms of ALS and/or MS. Canine Degenerative Myelopathy

S

o you’re a dog lover! Like millions of us across the world. There are many heartfelt reasons to open your home to a new dog—a member of your family. Perhaps to be your child’s best friend and protector. Or maybe just for your own companion and soul mate. Perhaps a Service dog, a K9 Officer, Search and Rescue or a Therapy dog. You teach them commands. You play with them. And you train them. You jog with them. Maybe hike, camp or travel with them. Maybe they sleep on your bed—warm and comforting. They listen without judgment. They’ve become your best friend and a member of your family. Loyal, brave, intelligent, and protective. They do not judge you. They want to please you. For years, they remain at your side, making you smile with their antics, protecting and comforting you. You love them. And they love you…unconditionally. Imagine six or seven young years later their feet begin to drag, they become wobbly on their legs. They have trouble getting up. You wonder what could be wrong at such a tender age. You take them to a vet. Maybe get an x-ray. It’s not an injury, not hip dysplasia. You go to a specialist, a neurologist for more tests, maybe an MRI. And you learn it’s likely DM. (Degenerative Myelopathy). Something you never heard of, and you want to learn more. You learn that it is FATAL, and there is NO CURE! A deadly disease that progresses and paralyzes your beloved companion! They become incontinent, weak, and unable to walk. You learn it isn’t a painful disease, and there are ways to help them stay mobile and remain happily in your life. After all, their mind

is still sharp, they still want to cuddle and play with you, but they can no longer walk, or greet you at the door. How can you stop this awful disease? We need a CURE! And for that, we need research! You can donate, volunteer, and bring awareness! We will help educate and support you. We will find those that are researching for a cure to DM. We will help fund that research. But sadly, we cannot do that without YOU! Degenerative Myelopathy is an incurable, progressive disease of the canine spinal cord that mimics the symptoms of ALS and/or MS. Onset is typically after the age of 6 years and older. Probable diagnosis of DM is made through the process of elimination of other diseases that may mimic DM. The only way to be 100% sure is by means of an autopsy, though there is a genetic test for the mutated gene. There have been over 70 breeds that have been tested that had at least one of two gene mutations. However, this does not necessarily mean they will ever show symptoms. Progressive weakness and lack of coordination of the rear limbs are often the first signs seen in affected dogs, with progression over time to complete flaccid paralysis of the rear, and later, front legs. This results in a loss of communication between nerves in the lower body of the animal and the brain. There is no cure for this disease, and it ultimately becomes fatal. We need to support research to find a cure! Please visit us online at www.cure4dm.org for more information about this disease and how you can help. www.triadhappytails.com July 2015

Mariah is a pretty tortoiseshell/ calico, stubby Manx girl. The vet estimates she was born sometime in 2013, maybe around October. This poor little lady was abandoned outside with 2 kittens, but a good Samaritan came to their aid. The kittens quickly found homes and Mariah came to TCR. Mariah isn’t fond of being picked up and held, but will climb into your lap for a snuggle Tailless Cat Rescue as soon as you sit down. She loves to be petted and rubbed and adores cat beds, considering them one of the great perks of being in a rescue. She also likes to sleep against you in bed, or on you, if you happen to lay on your back. Mariah can still be a little skittish about hands, so we try not to overstimulate her with too much petting at one time. Mariah is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped and is FeLV/FIV negative.

Coolio

is about 2 years old. He is up-to-date on shots, heartworm negative, on heartworm preventative and neutered. He was found by a veterinary hospital practice manager as an injured stray. Coolio loves treats and weighs around 18 pounds. He can be a little spunky. When he first came into the hospital, he was a bit feisty but the kennel techs have been working with Chihuahua Rescue him. He has gotten much better, to the point that one of the vet’s 6 year old daughters was able to pet him and walk him. But like many Chihuahuas, he doesn’t like it if someone that he doesn’t know grabs him without warning. partner? Meet Brady! A young and intelligent Plott Hound mix, Brady loves the outdoors and would make a fantastic running or hiking partner! He is food motivated and already loves to show off his “sit” and “shake paws” techniques to earn treats. Brady has a good deal of energy to share but listens well to gentle but firm direction. He is affectionate and wonderful with people and with proper introductions, great with other dogs as well! Brady has been in boarding for quite some time and while they’ve taken great care of him there, this sweet boy really needs a home to relax in and a loving family to finally call his own. He is fully vetted, neutered and house-trained.

If you’re looking for a spunky gal to call your own, Minnie is the dog for you! She is about 2 years old and is a pocket Pit Bull Terrier. Minnie is very sweet, very smart and loves long walks, balls, romping with her doggie foster brother, and snuggles. She takes direction well and wants nothing more than to please her people. She crates beautifully, not even a whimper. She is very gentle taking treats, loves to chew on bones, and gives kisses. Minnie prefers calmer, larger dogs. Minnie is currently in foster care where she receives lots of love and attention. She is house-trained, spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and microchipped.

For Your Information

PSA from the ASPCA As summer heats up, it’s tempting to bring your pet with you on car rides around town. Sadly, many people believe that cracking a window is enough to keep their dogs cool in the car while they make a quick pit stop—but they couldn’t be more wrong. When it’s 80 degrees outside, your car will be a staggering 114 degrees in less than 30 minutes. Worse still, dogs can’t cool themselves down as easily as people, and once they overheat, they can suffer extensive organ damage or die. That’s why leaving an animal alone in a car is more than just a bad idea, it’s a form of animal cruelty. And since the ASPCA can’t be everywhere at all times, we need YOU to be our eyes and ears on the ground. Share with friends and family on your social media networks, alerting others to the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars.

Here are other ways to help: 1. Immediately call animal control or 911 if you see an animal trapped in a hot car. Local law officials have the ability to enter the vehicle and rescue the pet. Do not leave until help has arrived. 2. Notify the managers of nearby businesses so they can make an urgent announcement. 3. Sign our Hot Car Pledge to help save lives this summer and all year long at: www.aspca.org We are working hard to spread awareness about the dangers of hot cars, but all too often, the difference between life and death comes down to the actions of individuals like you.

Thank you for advocating for animals in your area!

Training Your Pet

A Gift of Love…

Massage Techniques for Your Dog

By Linda Hofmann

I

f you have had a relaxing and stress relieving massage, then you already know how great it makes you feel. Massaging your dog can be one of the greatest gifts of love you can give. Massage is a highly focused way of touching. Regular massage can add to the length and quality of your pet’s life. For minutes a day, massage can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, calm nervousness, soothe aches and pains and increase the human pet bond. And, it’s great for your health too! Massaging your dog will reduce your stress and can even lower your own blood pressure. Make your dog’s first massage experience a calm and reassuring time. Select a quiet and comfortable place. Have a special blanket or mat to indicate to your pet “It’s Massage Time.” Soft lighting and relaxing music will enhance the massage experience. There are many techniques for giving a good dog massage. I will explain four conditions and techniques that will guide you in developing good techniques to massage your dog. The Daily Ten Minute Massage will allow you to notice lumps, sensitivities and loss of muscle tone that may indicate a veterinary check up. Start with a massage of the head and neck muscles and progress to the tail. Include shoulders, back, sides, chest belly, legs, paws and toes. Use a flat palm to slowly touch all parts of your dog’s body. Apply enough pressure so you feel through all layers - fur, skin, muscles and bone. It should be light pressure, but penetrating. End this massage with a special treat of a gentle ear massage. Touch the tips of each ear with your hands, massaging the ear between your thumbs and fingers. The Calming Massage is recommended for the nervous dog, the type who suffers from anxieties such as separation, thunder storms or new environments. Start the calming massage at the head or base of the neck. Lightly rest the flat palm of your hand and slowly move it along the spine from neck to tail in a sweeping motion. Repeat the process several times slowly. Do not apply pressure directly on the spine. Finish by resting one hand on the base of the neck and the other hand over the hip/pelvis area, pressing lightly. These two areas on the spinal cord control rest

and relaxation responses of the body. The Warm Up Massage is for the Active Dog, the one who chases balls, frisbees or competes in dog sports such as agility, dock diving, rally or fly ball. A warm up massage is important to prevent injuries when moving. Start with several minutes of petting, stroking your dog’s entire body. The goal is to warm the muscles and tendons with gentle movement. Use the heel of your hand to briskly rub in circular motions on the large muscles in the neck, shoulders, hips, thighs and chest. Gently lift and squeeze the muscles, much like kneading dough. Wrap your fingers around each lower leg and gently squeeze. Start low on each leg and move up toward the heart to promote good circulation of fluid. Relax your grip and move up the limb. Finish with more petting strokes over the entire body to stimulate nerves. The Joint Stiffness and Soreness Relieving Massage is for the overactive, arthritic or senior dog. These types will greatly benefit from this technique. Start with gentle strokes around the joint to warm the muscles. Think of elbows, knees, wrists, hocks, hips, shoulders. Establish a rhythm as you press and release into the muscles. Use your breathing or count slowly to do this. Then place your hands over the area and apply gentle compression. This pumping motion moves the fluid through the muscles and releases tendon tension in the surrounding joint. Never use sudden or direct force over a bone. Finish with more petting over the area to soothe nerves. The benefits of massage are the same for dogs as people. It’s a great way to give your dog love and affection that will improve her overall health and well-being. Training your dog to enjoy regular dog massage sessions will reduce stress for you and your pet. It will enhance the loving, caring bond between the two of you and improve the quality of your pet’s life.

TRAPPER This Dog’s Tale By Laurie Merritt

L

ate last October, Dr. Christine Hunt, DVM, contacted me regarding fostering a special dog. Trapper is a black Lab mix whose right forepaw got crushed in a coyote trap in January 2014. According to records, some hunters released him from the trap, wanted nothing to do with him, brought him to a nearby store, and a lady who was in the store at the time took him to the SPCA of the Triad. Initially, two toes were amputated, so the SPCA staff and volunteers cared for him throughout the following nine months, soaking and rewrapping his paw several times a day, along with his daily meals and walks. No easy task! While recuperating from that, Trapper was also neutered and then had to go through heartworm treatments. Unfortunately, the other bones in the forepaw became infected, so, in September Trapper was brought to Dr. Hunt’s office where she amputated the entire forepaw. Throughout 2014, Trap befriended everyone at the SPCA and the University Animal Hospital. He needed daily dressing changes, other required treatments and/or trips to the vet, daily outdoor walks, etc., which amounted to months of being contained, constrained, and crated. Fox8 News got a hold of Trapper’s story and published two reports in September and October. Prosthetist Steve Grove, of the Hanger Clinic, also jumped on the bandwagon and teamed up with Dr. Hunt to make a temporary prosthesis for Trapper. Enter the foster parents. Trap’s forepaw got amputated one month before I visited him. Two days later, my husband met him and we

John Wehe, DVM DOWNTOWN GREENSBORO ANIMAL HOSPITAL 120 W Smith Street in Greensboro P: 336-338-1840 | F: 336-617-5351

discussed fostering him. The discussion didn’t take long; one week later, we brought him home. On January 30, 2015, we signed the adoption papers. To date, as he has gained strength and size, we have tested a second prosthesis, Steve Grove continues to refit and reshape according to his movements, and hopefully Trapper will fit into his permanent one any day now If ever there was a right time to do the right thing, it was that week! Fate? Probably. Those who know us well would agree. He needed us and it was time for us to be with a dog again. Trapper has easily adapted to both of the temporary prostheses, LOVES his daily walks where he can be a four-legged mutt again, and has even reached a point where he can break into a slow run now! Quite amazing really. He’s also quite adept and has just as much fun on all threes. While he’s wonderful and warms up to people immediately, he’s learning to socialize with other dogs (fear aggression). We’re addressing that, but again, no easy task – he’s a bull in a China shop, but he’s our bull!

Barney is an engaging small Golden mix (Duck Tolling Retriever?) that loves to have fun with his humans and has the athletic ability of a Toller. He needs a home with a high fence and humans to play with. He would make a great agility, nosework, or obedience companion and walks well on leash (at your side), but would prefer to jog. At 50 lbs, he loves to cuddle with his humans, but is cautious of new Triad Golden Retriever Rescue men. He has warmed up to his foster dad and gets along well with their two Goldens. They say he is 6, but his foster home thinks he’s much younger especially in spirit. Visit www.tgrr.org for more information. n

Sheba lived most of her 8 year life in a 20’ x 20’ outdoor pen. When her owner died, a friend tried to find rescue for this wonderful dog, and Juliet’s House Rescue Juliet’s House Rescue took her in. We are not sure what breed she is - maybe Shepherd and Beagle? Sheba is super sweet and gentle. She can be quite shy, but so grateful for any attention. Until she gets to know you, she will probably want to stay outside a lot. But then she will be your best buddy inside! Sheba loves to cuddle when she knows you. She weighs about 55 pounds, but is very calm and easy to walk on a leash. Sheba would probably be best as the only pet because she is so hungry for love that she can get jealous of other animals. But for you – lots and lots of love! Sheba’s adoption fee is $95. Please contact Juliet’s House at rfjg2903@bellsouth.net. n

Spotlight on Pet Supplies & More

Pet Supplies & More

New Location, Same Great Experience The first thing you see from the outside and upon entering the new store are colorful, oversized plush animals enjoying the pet beds, dog houses and a variety of pet products. Owner, Ronald Meadows, hit upon the idea when he noticed the excitement the kids and adults alike express when spotting “Ricky Raccoon” lounging in a cozy dog bed. Ronald and his staff now “rescue” cuddly models from second hand stores around town. The following is an interview with Ronald about his new store location, his innovative ideas and his philosophy on catering to the retail pet market. THT: What prompted you to leave your long time location on High Point Road and move over to the Cardinal Crossing Shopping Center? RM: We had some issues with the old store’s layout and division of space. There was an extremely large area in the back of the store for storage, that was not needed. Our retail display area needed more room and the back was just unused space. Plus, all the isles were laid out in a straight line, the “supermarket style” which did not allow our customers to see our products easily. Our new location was completely open with no support beams in the middle to work around. We were able to build some of the isles at an angle, allowing customers to see everything on an isle. Plus we were able to place most products in groups that made sense. For instance, all our natural treats are grouped together. Walking down an isle, our customers are able to see like products, such as pet food, on the left and the right. We have an aquatic area featuring fish, food, aquariums, filters and any supplies you might need for your finny friends all in one area.

Our new store has a large cold storage area for raw frozen pet food, that didn’t exist in our previous location. The new store is more visually pleasing since we were able to add additional lighting and design features that appeal to our customers. Frankly moving a retail operation is a very difficult process not to be taken lightly. Not only do you have the logistics of packing, transporting and setting up a new store, you have the prospect of leaving an area where you have built up your customer base. These folks are not just customers, they are friends and you hope to stay in contact with as many as possible. Our location on High Point Road had been in operation for over eighteen years. Yes, this was a decision that was not an easy one to make. We do offer free delivery in the Greensboro area for orders over $50.00 to continue to service our good friends across town. THT: So, what is your background, retail? Have you always been in the “pet store business”? RM: My family owned a small grocery store I worked in growing up in Florida. In high school, I worked for a supermarket, so yes I did have a background in retail. But, after college, I worked in the corporate world for thirty years. After retiring, I looked around and decided I was not ready to stop working completely, so I got into a pet store franchise business. For being retired (laughs) I am working more hours than ever before! THT: What’s your business model? What sets your business apart from the other stores?

Visit the new location at 2215 Fleming Road,Greensboro, located in the Cardinal Crossing Shopping Center.

July 2015 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

RM: When I made the move, I got out of the franchise and opened a single store, privately owned operation. My business partner retired and I now am the sole owner of Pet Supplies & More. I felt I wanted the flexibility and creative freedom to run the business as I thought best. I love the benefit of no restrictions from corporate, and being a locally owned business operating as I see fit. We are known as a “pet specialty” store, and we can focus on healthier more natural foods. Here you will find healthier choices for your pets. We like to get to know our customer and their pets so we can discuss their needs and help them make informed decisions. Every product that comes in is researched so we can better inform out customers. We do carry some grocery lines that are a bit more affordable for those on a stricter budget. Trying to balance the affordability with the nutritious aspects of the food and treats is a major goal with us.

We were able to place most products in groups that made sense. For instance, all our natural treats are grouped to together, fish and aquatic accessories are side by side for easy access. THT: As a local businessman you are involved with our local shelter and rescues. Your store donates food and pet care items to our local organizations, and in addition, you are past President of the Humane Society of the Piedmont, and work closely with the SPCA of the Triad and several local rescue and adoption groups. Would you say this has had a big impact on your personal life and your business? RM: The tremendous tragedy of pet overpopulation is a huge issue facing all of us. Our store has never sold, nor will it ever sell puppies and kittens, too many are being euthanized due to lack of loving homes. As a human being, I feel it is our responsibility to do whatever we can to alleviate this terrible problem. Yes, we do donate money, food and supplies to the local shelter and rescue groups and also do our best to educate the public as to the benefits of adopting a homeless animal. Our store holds a rabies clinic manned by the SPCA of the Triad the first Saturday of each month. We hold fund raisers over the course of the year for our local groups and try to support events such as Bark in the Boro, Bark and Wine plus other local events during the year. There are many different ways we can all do what it takes to help. THT: People have always loved their pets, but recently it seems more and more they are considered a valuable family member. Have you seen many changes over the years in the pet/human relationship? RM: Oh yes, over the ten years I have worked in the retail pet operation, I have seen a more informed customer evolve. This makes our job easier, they read labels, ask questions and in general have an idea of what they want. We are able to have conversations about what is best for their pet. If we don’t have something, we can special order and get their product within five-seven days, with no up charge for the order! THT: How do you see your business evolving in the future? Does

social media come more into play as consumers change the way they shop? RM: Definitely! The move is away from some traditional forms of shopping and headed towards e-commerce. Some shoppers will increasingly want to order on-line and have goods delivered to their homes or businesses. Of course, many people will still want the personal contact and interaction with their local retail outlets. On the other hand, the pet services industry is steadily growing. Consumers will still need to visit local establishments for We can all do our part in helping grooming, veterinary care, doggie overcome the tragedy of the pet day care and other services. I am overpopulation issue. thinking of adding grooming and possibly a mobile veterinary service to our operation in the future. Pets play an increasingly important role in our lives, and I see the providers of these goods and services to be a part of a growing economy. My philosophy is, “Do what you love, love what you do! German Shepherd Rescue & Adoptions

Rocky was picked up roaming the streets of Durham when he was just a tiny pup. He’s about 1-1/2 years old and is still a bit cautious around new things. Rocky will need an active family, willing to put in training time and able to let him adjust at his own pace. He is cratetrained, house-trained, good on leash, knows sit and shake, and is good with dogs, cats, and older children. Rocky LOVES to cuddle, play ball, chew on appropriate chew things, and play with his foster siblings. Visit www.gsdrescue.org for more information. n

is so funny! When he goes outside, he wants to take his rubber Kong with him. Volunteers have to coax him to leave it in his kennel so he’ll have it when he comes back in. He tosses it and loves it. The Truth About Cats And Dogs By Erin McGovern

I

had long considered myself a cat person. I had a wonderful dog for a while as an adult, but I was always the one comfortably settled on the sofa with a purring blanket of cats. Things changed, as they often do, and I found myself needing more company than the world’s happiest parakeet could bring. I needed a dog. I went to the Guilford County Animal Shelter a few times, picturing in my mind what type of dog I would like. A medium-sized dog, maybe 30-40 lbs., older, established. Basically, a distant cousin of the dog I had known. And then I met Boo. His shelter name was Boomer, which officially became Boo Radley at the vet, but he only really knows Boo. Every time I walked down the row, Boo would sit, and wag, and stare up at me with his beautiful golden eyes. Boo was big and young. He was all head and feet. But those eyes caught me. We went out to the

meet-and-greet pens, and he immediately put his big head in my lap. Oh, dear. Boo quickly grew into that head and those feet. And I grew “into having a puppy”. There was a learning curve for both of us, and it wasn’t always easy. Boo still has a penchant for pulling the blanket off of me, or running away with my knitting. Much fun! Human chase dog! But then there are the hikes, the runs, the play dates with other dogs, the pull-toy rumpuses, and the daily alarm clock belly rubs. There’s offering me his dirty, slobbery Kong when I’m upset, and surprising him with a present from the grocery store. Dog joy is a wonderful thing to behold. There’s snuggling on the sofa in front of a fire, and struggling for space on the bed. Accidentally teaching the phrase “rumblies in tumblies”, and enjoying the mad dance (and sit!) that ensues. And there are those same golden eyes to greet me when I get home. Your move, cats. www.triadhappytails.com July 2015
