She came to the SPCA of the Triad scared and shy but she is really starting to flourish into the sweet, playful dog she was meant to be. Bailey has been participating in the People & Paws 4 Hope training program and does wonderful with the kids and dogs. She is estimated to be about 1 year old and has been spayed and fully vaccinated.

Bailey Rudy was returned to the SPCA when his family adopted a relative’s child. Unfortunately there are breed restrictions when dealing with Social Services & Rudy had to leave his home, family & Corgi friend. He’s 3 years old & SUCH a good boy. Very mellow & just goes with the flow, he considers himself a lap dog & loves giving kisses. He is trained on key commands such as sit, stay & place. Rudy is neutered & fully vaccinated.

Pet Insurance Myths Debunked! The following are actual statements made by local pet owners regarding pet insurance.
MYTH #1: All pet insurance carriers are the same. There are 14 pet insurance carriers in the United States and all of them differ based upon their quality of service, monthly premiums, policies available and reimbursement percentages. The best advice would be to take time to research and compare each of the pet insurance carriers. The most helpful web resource that we have found is www.petinsurancereview.com. This website will help you find the right pet insurance for you and your pet.
MYTH #2: I do not need pet insurance because I have no problem paying for routine pet care. Pet insurance is not designed to cover preventative care. It is intended to be used for unexpected pet health issues, such as illnesses or accidents. For example, a pet that was seriously injured after being hit by a car may require extensive medical care, surgery and days of hospitalization. The total cost of care can be significant (thousands of dollars). Providing the best possible care for your pet in this situation would be so much easier knowing that you would be getting up to 90% of your money reimbursed by your pet insurance carrier.
MYTH #3: My pet is mostly indoors, so I would never have the need for emergency services or pet insurance. The majority of patients seen for illnesses or accidents live mostly indoors with their owners. Indoor pets still chew up toys and ingest inappropriate items, get into the trash, receive table scraps, ingest human medications, suffer traumatic injuries, develop systemic disease (i.e. kidney disease, heart disease, cancer), and so on. The medical care required to treat all of these problems, and many others, would be covered by pet insurance.
MYTH #4: My pet is 10 years old. He is too old to qualify for pet insurance. Most pet insurance carriers have plans for senior pets, as long as they are enrolled before 14 years of age. While pet insurance often excludes pre-existing conditions, there are many senior pet health issues that would still be covered by pet insurance.
MYTH #5: I have a Great Dane. Because of his breed, he is predisposed to bloat and would not be approved for coverage by a pet insurance carrier. Pet insurance companies do not exclude specific breeds from being covered. However, they often exclude coverage for specific conditions that are high risk in certain breeds (i.e. bloat in Great Danes). These specific medical exclusions vary between pet insurance companies. This should not stop you from getting pet insurance for your Great Dane. Since there are so many other health issues that can occur with any pet, their breed or certain excluded conditions should not keep you from getting pet insurance.
MYTH #6: I have a Dachshund who had back surgery or a Labrador who had knee surgery, so they would not be eligible for pet insurance. In both of these cases, the problems arose and the surgeries were performed prior to the owner applying for pet insurance. Therefore, these specific problems would be considered pre-existing conditions and would not be covered under any pet insurance policy. However, there are numerous other health issues that would be covered by the pet insurance including: vomiting, diarrhea, allergic reactions, traumatic injuries, heart disease, and kidney disease, just to name a few. Pre-existing conditions should not stop you from getting pet insurance.
MYTH #7: My cat has had urinary issues before, so he would not be eligible for pet insurance. Like the Dachshund and the Labrador in the previous example, this cat would not be covered for any medical issues relating to his previous urinary tract problems because they would be considered a preexisting condition. However, any other health issue that he develops would be covered. Examples of such potential problems include: a corneal scratch or abscessed bite wound caused by fighting with another cat; vomiting caused by eating a toxic indoor plant; or foreign body surgery after eating dental floss. There are many more examples that would be covered by pet insurance. With all veterinarians accepting pet insurance and the realization that up to 90% of your unexpected veterinary bills could be covered, what are you waiting for? By having your pet covered by pet insurance, you will be able to give them the best medical care possible without worrying about the cost. Remember to visit the website www.petinsurancereview.com to compare all the pet insurance carriers. If you are looking for a suggestion, we frequently recommend Trupanion Pet Insurance. Visit the website www.Trupanion.com for more details or stop by our business anytime for more information.

OFF THE
CHAIN
I
By Marsha Williams, Director Guilford County Animal Shelter
t is finally warming up outside. I can see the trees and flowers are starting to bloom now that my eyes are opening. The ground is soft and the grass feels so good under my feet. My brothers and sisters are hungry so my mom comes over to feed us. I love the touch of my mom, and although she seems very tired, she always takes good care of us. She bathes us daily and makes sure we are protected. Oh, ha, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Tommy, I am a three week old puppy and I have six brothers and four sisters. We live in a beautiful yard with lots of trees and flowers. My family keeps my mother tied at one of those trees in the yard all day and all night. I do not know my father. He came over one day to visit my mom and left, never to be seen again. I heard my family say he came into the yard and they ran him off. They thought he was a black Lab. Today the sun is shining and my siblings and I are chasing bees and butterflies around the yard. We are having so much fun, Mom is resting under the tree. It rained yesterday so she is still a little wet and itchy. I think the bugs are biting us because I am itchy too. Ouch this is uncomfortable, ouch, ouch, itching is no fun. I am 8 weeks old today and my family came to the yard and brought some friends. They were so much fun! They played with us and took one of my brothers home to live with them.
It’s a few weeks later now and all the puppies are gone. They were all picked to join a new family and, now, it is just me and
12
mom. My mom is coughing a lot and getting very skinny, I hope she feels better soon. It was a very stormy week and I was afraid because the thunder was loud and the rain felt like balls of ice hitting me and my mom all over. We looked up at the house and saw our family looking out of the window, taking pictures of the ice balls and talking. My mom and I wished we were in the house with them. I ran toward the door when I saw the children hoping they would let me in. But when I got so far, I jerked back! What is going on, why can I not get to the door? I looked behind me and I saw a large chain. I looked at my mom and she was curled up under the tree trying to stay warm and dry. I walked over and laid beside her, sad and cold, wishing our family would bring us in. The night was long and scary. It stormed most of the night. The wind blew down tree limbs all around us, our water was dirty and our food was wet. Thank goodness the sun came out that afternoon. It sure felt good to be dry and not wet and sticky. My mom and I laid around and spent the majority of the day waiting for fresh food and water and watching for my family to come home. My family decided to move my mom further away from my tree but it was still nice to be able to see her and know that I was not alone.
A few months have passed now and winter has come and gone. Boy am I glad
July 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
that is over. Some days the snow was so high it was hard to walk. Our water was frozen and some days my mom and I were thirsty. One day a lady came by when it was icy outside and brought my mom and me a dog house with some soft stuff in it to lay on. It was so comfortable and my feet did not freeze. We both slept so good after that. I love my new house! Today is a sad day, I think my father came to visit again and my mom was not feeling well. He brought a few of his friends with him as well. I started barking and asked them to leave my mom alone. I barked louder, hoping my family would come out and help, I guess they were not at home. I could tell my mom wanted to run away but she couldn’t, she was chained to the tree. As my mom yelled and cried I tried to get to her, but couldn’t. One of the dogs was running toward me. I was so afraid, I thought I was next. But someone ran into the yard and scared the dogs off. My mom laid there, it was so quiet. The person who ran into the yard took my mom somewhere
and I never saw her again. When my family came home, they came out and removed the chain from the tree that my mom was on and gave me some food and water.
Wow time is moving so slow! I believe it has been years because the snow keeps coming and going. It is lonely because my family does not come out to play with me much, they are very busy. I have been on this chain now for a long time. I am not as friendly as I used to be. For some reason I am angry all the time. I wish I could go for a walk or run. My neck is hurting, this chain is so tight and heavy. I used to wag my tail when people walked by, and now I am very aggressive, barking and biting as they pass by. I wish they would take me off this tree and let me chase a ball. I think I am forgetting who I am. Yesterday, a raccoon stopped by to eat what little food I had. I could have stopped him but I could not reach the bowl. This morning I was barking at someone and my chain pushed the bowl out of reach. My leg is hurting today, a dog came in the yard and wanted to mark MY territory as HIS. Boy was I mad, this is my house and I am the boss here. I think I will take a nap there is nothing else to do right now, besides it is hot. Oh my, what is going on? Someone is throwing rocks at me and hitting me with a stick. Wait a minute, I know these kids, they live next door. Why are they doing this? I wish I could run away but I can’t, I am tied to this tree. I guess I will bark and see if I can get some help. If not, I will just give them a little bite and maybe they will leave.
One day I heard my family talking about a new ordinance where families could not chain their dogs outside. I was so afraid because I heard them say they were going to have to get rid of me because they did not know how they were going to keep me in the yard. That night I could not sleep, I was so afraid. I love my family and do not want to leave them. I believe they love me too. The children were crying and begging to let me stay. Then, the nice lady who gave me the dog house came over one day and talked to my family about what they could do to keep me. She talked to them about a fence and about getting me neutered. I do not know what neutered means but they said it would help me to not be so aggressive. Boy, would I be happy

Lady Madonna.
These three puppies have a lot going for them. They are a mix of two favorite breedsPointer/Lab. They are as smart as they are CUTE! They are very loving and obedient and to top it all off, they’re almost 100% crate-trained at 4 months. These three girls came in with their mamma, Mable. Sweet Mable has been adopted, and now these girls say “Our turn!” Give us a call to schedule a meeting with one of these precious girls and meet your new best friend!
Am I the most adorable kitten you’ve ever seen? The answer is probably yes. Madonna is a playful little bundle of energy and sweetness. She loves to play with her sisters, all named after Beatle songs. They wrestle and run and tumble all through the house. Lady Madonna is particularly driven to be best friends with all people. She loves to follow you around and sit on your shoulder. If you’re looking for a personalityfilled feline, Madonna is your girl!

Cutie
is a 3 year old doll baby with the most inquisitive face. She is always looking at you with a sideways, mischievous grin. Cutie has spunk and personality. She is quite intelligent, as well. Cutie is not a “lap cat” as some would say, but she is affectionate and loves to spend time upside down by your laptop or right beside you on the couch. Since she’s fully grown, she isn’t inclined to go tearing through your home or climb your curtains. She’s the perfect mix of kitten cute and adult well-mannered! For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n
Matilda is petite and playful at a mere 10 weeks of age. She loves to make biscuits and cuddle with other kitty friends. Shiloh is a 6 years young Chihuahua with a heart of gold. He would do just about anything for a belly rub and some chicken jerky. His ideal home would have a bed to sleep in curled up next to his favorite person and a backyard to explore, with no rambunctious children or animals. He is great with other low key pets. Shiloh loves to play with fluffy squeak toys and he does a dance for his dinner! What’s holding you back? This could be the canine companion you’ve been waiting for! Nutrition Basics: What Does a Pet Food Label Mean?
C
hoosing a food for your dog or cat can be challenging due to the many choices available today. Many pet owners wonder which is the best food to feed their beloved family member. Unfortunately, there is no perfect answer, because it depends on many factors. What is your pet’s age? What is your pet’s activity level? Do they have any medical conditions? In addition to the hundreds of traditional commercial pet foods available, an increasing number of pet owners choose to feed non-traditional diets, including raw food and home made diets. With all of the options, how should you choose? First, lets discuss how commercial pet food is labeled. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) and National Research Council (NRC) have created guidelines for the minimum and maximum amounts of protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals for pets. These numbers have been determined through years of research. Every bag of pet food requires a nutritional adequacy statement, the most important part of a label. This statement includes if the diet is complete and balanced, what life stage the diet is suitable is for, and if animal feeding trials were performed. Animal feeding tests mean pets were fed the diet exclusively for an extended period of time, and their health status was evaluated extensively during and after the trial. Many commercial diets today are not fed to any animals before they are sold and fed to your pet. Keep in mind that diets are sold as complete and balanced, which means that when food is added it can alter the balance of your pets diet. If more than 10% of your pets calories come from treats or even home cooked food, the diet is no longer balanced. Non-traditional diets have been gaining in popularity for various reasons, including safety concerns from pet food recalls. Pet food recalls are occurring more frequently than a decade ago; however, the FDA and pet food companies have increased monitoring for the safety of our pets, and the recalls are frequently proactive, rather than a consequence of pets becoming sick after eating a food. Some owners have felt feeding a home cooked diet is a safer choice. A recent study evaluated over 200 home cooked diet recipes that were found in books and online, and found that only 3% were nutritionally adequate. A majority of home cooked diets contain excessively high levels of protein and fat. If you feel that you should feed your pet a home cooked diet, your veterinarian or a board certified veterinary nutritionist could help formulate a recipe for a complete and balanced diet. The most important time to feed a pet a balanced diet is during the growth phase. Keep in mind that for large and giant breed dogs, this could last up to two years! Mineral and vitamin deficiencies during the demanding growth phase can lead to life long health consequences. Speak to your vet before feeding a non-
traditional raw food diet, as there are both nutritional and public health concerns that should be discussed. Veterinary therapeutic diets can be a powerful tool used to treat conditions such as arthritis, urinary issues and kidney disease. Prescription diets undergo testing for efficacy, but must be sold by your vet because they have nutrient profiles that do not meet the AAFCO guidelines. For example, feeding a low protein diet to pets with chronic kidney failure has proven to slow the progression of the disease. However, the protein level falls below the AAFCO minimum standard for a healthy adult pet, and cannot be sold over the counter. Two of the most common health conditions which diet can play an important role are obesity and allergies. The incidence of pet obesity has been sharply increasing in recent years, and the most common reason is over feeding. Your vet can determine the number of calories your pet should eat based on their body condition, and then recommend the amount of food to feed based on the diet you select. Allergies in pets are secondary to either environmental allergens such as grasses and pollen, or to food. The most common allergens are beef, dairy, chicken, lamb and egg, which comprise 95% of food allergens. Food allergies are diagnosed by a response to a food trial, which means a diet should be fed exclusively for six weeks. The diet used should contain only one protein source and one carbohydrate source. The label should be read closely, as diets labeled for allergies and as limited ingredients can contain numerous protein and carbohydrate sources. Veterinary diets are the most effective way to rule out food allergies, as they are the least likely to be cross contaminated with other protein sources. The protein and carbohydrate should be new to your pet, or not have been fed for a significant period of time. It’s best to feed your pet foods that contain only single, common meat as the protein source such as beef or chicken. That way you will have more options for a food trial if your dog develops allergies. Discuss your pet’s diet during your next wellness visit. We want our pets to live long and healthy lives, and nutrition is an aspect that should
be considered as important as vaccines and parasite preventatives.

Audreycame to ARFP
Oliver
when she was shot in the leg with a BB gun and her owners decided they would rather have her put down than have the leg fixed. True story. She’s been in ARFP for about 3 months and is so ready to have a new home to call her own. Audrey is one very affectionate kitty that is about a year old. She is a “team player” and gets along so well with all of the other cats. Audrey is spayed, up-to-date on shots and negative for Feline Leukemia. She is now a house cat 100% and loves it. Looking for an affectionate roomy?
is part Maine Coon and part lover! He is extremely personable and will make someone a great indoor kitty. Oliver was part of a family that took in too many cats. Attention was limited and the family finally realized that. ARFP volunteered to take in Oliver and he has been so happy. Oliver is two years old and loves everyone. He has blended in nicely while living at the Next Step Adoption Center. Oliver is up-to-date on his shots and neutered. He will be a great addition to most any home.
Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n

Mr. Smudge. He’s a 10-12 month old black and white kitten that is a Casanova. Smudge has a purrbox that never shuts down. He was rescued by some nice people in another local rescue who needed a place for him to stay, so ARFP welcomed him into our group. Smudge is neutered, up-to-date on shots and Leukemia negative. He plays well with the other cats at the adoption center and according to him dogs are ok too. Would you like a Smudge in your life? Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n
Zena
Maya,
previously named Sydney, to which she didn’t answer, appears to have been born about 3/15/14. She was found on the side of the road by a kind trucker. Much like her namesake, Maya Angelou, she has a lot to say, but in a quiet manner. She’s energetic, friendly, inquisitive, engaging, good with cat (we only have one) and other dogs. She gives a great hug too.
Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n
Tucker. Now
will soon be three years old and in her short Pit Bull life she has already been through so much! She was rescued by ARFP, ready to give birth any day. Once her puppies were weaned, Zena went to live in a home for 11 months until that home decided they couldn’t keep her due to their demanding job. Now she is back at ARFP and looking for a forever home. Zena is the perfect dog. She is loving, quiet, gentle, and a HUGE lap dog. Zena weighs 34 lbs. and is absolutely delightful to be with. She is fine with cats but would prefer to be the only dog in her forever home. She is definitely the last one up every morning and can be quite the couch potato!
almost 5 weeks of age Little Tucker is learning all about eating puppy porridge instead of nursing on a bottle. Tucker is a Boxer mix, one of five that we have. His mom, who was a Boxer, died right after birthing puppies so Tucker and his siblings have been bottle-raised, handled and well socialized since day one. Tucker is starting to communicate with his siblings with little growls and barks. Tucker is not ready to go to a new home just yet, but why not get your name in the pot!

Pearl is on the hunt for
Chai.
a special person to love. This gorgeous silver tabby warms up slowly, but your patience will pay off. Although Pearl does not seek constant attention, she loves to lie in the sun near her human companion and appreciates petting and an occasional belly rub. You can see the love in her brilliant green eyes. Pearl is a calm girl but also enjoys play time. She prefers to be your only kitty but would adapt to life with a dog. Pearl would do best with adults and teenagers. If you seek a beautiful cat who does not require lots of attention, Pearl may be the one. This kitty is up-to-date on vaccinations, has been spayed, and has a microchip.
If you are among those who like to talk to their pets, you might want to speak with Chai. He is happy to strike up a conversation. His main topic of conversation is himself! He will tell you what he wants and will tell you again if you don’t respond. Although Chai doesn’t like to be picked up, he enjoys snuggle time with his humans. He would prefer a home with older children and adults. An intelligent cat at 2 years old, Chai likes to outsmart toys designed to challenge feline minds. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, has a microchip, and has been neutered.

Jangles is one of
Sage.
several tuxedo cats currently available through FCAP. Like most tuxedos, Jangles is a friendly boy who seeks human contact. Tuxedo cats have a following among cat lovers. Some of the popular names for this type of cat include: Oreo, Panda, Zebra, Yinyang, Ritz, Boots, C.C. (Coffee & Cream), Eight Ball, Half & Half, Gala, and Moomoo. Jangles and his feline friends don’t mind if you change their names. Next time you are at PetSmart on Bridford Parkway in Greensboro, come say hello to Jangles. He is current on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered.
This handsome, long-haired tuxedo is about 3 years old, so he has experienced a bit of life. He is not easily startled and has a calm demeanor. Sage knows what he’s looking for in a new home. Though he is not a lap cat, Sage likes to follow his people around, much like a dog would. And if you’ve seen him at PetSmart, you know that he is the size of a small dog! Sage really loves his scratching post and is fond of his plush leopard-spotted bed. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered.

Cashew
Stash. An intro-
is a lap kitty whose purr can be activated by a single touch. He loves gentle belly rubs and will stand on his tiptoes to get the maximum rub when you stroke his back. At nearly 2 years old, this sweet boy loves to play and gets along with most other cats and feline-friendly dogs. Cashew has been adopted once, but one of the cats in that home just couldn’t accept him. So this beautiful boy is back at FCAP, seeking a loving home. Cashew is current on vaccinations, has been neutered, and has a microchip.
vert at heart, Stash is a bit on the shy side. He wants to get to know you before he makes a commitment. You can trust him with your secrets – he won’t tell a soul. And if you are patient and love him for long enough, you may earn this fine feline’s trust. This kitty is called a tuxedo, and Stash’s costume includes white boots. Tradition tells us that William Shakespeare owned a tuxedo cat, as did Beethoven and Sir Isaac Newton. Stash is current on vaccinations, neutered and microchipped.

Hello world, my name is Olivia. My favorite things include: humans, rubs from humans, playing ball with humans, and sitting on the humans’ laps! I am very focused on my people because I love them so much. I bet I could learn a bunch of tricks if you took me home! My dream is to have a family that spends time with me every day, it doesn’t matter to me what we are doing. I am a little bit “bow legged” thanks to an injury to my growth plate that I probably got when I was just a few days old, but it doesn’t bother me one bit! You couldn’t find a happier puppy than me!
Please Adopt!

Ginger
Scott.
is a six year old Pekinese that came to Red Dog Farm when her owner realized that she could no longer keep her. She has been raised with children and does great with them. She LOVES her people and would love to have a stay at home mom or go to work with you if at all possible. She can be left at home if you need a night out but her dream home would include her most of the time. Ginger does fine with other dogs and cats. However, she would be perfectly fine as the only dog of the household. Basically, Ginger’s requirements are a lap and attention as often as you can give it
I may be smaller than my sisters but I make up for my size with my huge personality! I am a crazy, silly boy when I play but if you catch me when I am snoozing, I will snuggle with you and purr louder than both my sisters put together. Like most superheroes, I have a secret – I am not all black! I have a tiny white spot on my chest and longer white hairs on my back. I am still getting used to my foster canine brother and sister and try to intimidate them with my little bitty hiss but that hasn’t stopped my foster canine brother from incessantly licking me whenever he sees me.
If you are interested in adopting Ginger, please fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

was surrendered to us by a family who bought him on Craigslist and did not know anything further about his history, so unfortunately we don’t know much about his past. He is a very tame and friendly four year-old and literally jumped in our trailer when we opened the back door. He is a great little pony with a huge personality, and we are so glad that he will now be able to live with either mares or geldings. Bullseye is now in training with Cheryl Bell.

Bullseye
was originally found as a stray and knocking on death’s door. She was very slim and throwing up mud, dirt, and road kill. Needless to say, thanks to a very nice family she is in much better health. Once she started feeling better, the current dogs in the house no longer cared for her and Beatrice needed to find new digs. She needs some additional time to recover from her “road trip” on the streets. We are still getting to know her so please stay tuned for further updates (unless someone snatches her up in the meantime).

Jasmine & Aladdin are a bonded pair in their early to mid twenties who came to us from a situation in which their owners could not afford to care for them. They are thin but should gain weight quickly. Jasmine seems to be somewhat of a “seeing eye horse” for Aladdin, who definitely has some vision issues. They are timid of being caught but once haltered they are very friendly. This pair needs a retirement home as they are past their years of being ridden. A few toys would be nice and a nice scratch behind the ears, she’s low maintenance these days. Hollywood is not the kind of “rat race” this girl wants to be a part of anymore.

Mabel is adorable! This beautiful little Beagle really loves to play with other dogs, and is fine with cats too. She is about 18 lbs, 3 years old, and will melt your heart with those big brown eyes of hers! Mabel is very shy with people, and we are working on that. She has started to come to me for a treat, and we are helping her feel more comfortable with people. Progress has been made, and we think she would be a wonderful companion for another dog, in a home where there are no very young children, and where the adults would be patient with her.

WALK the
DOG
by Christopher Martin, Dogs Anonymous
T
he Walk, it’s one of the most important and yet misunderstood aspects of a well-balanced pooch! More often than not, I discover that walking the dog is either being done improperly, sporadically or not at all. This is sad because it’s one of the most enjoyable (or at least it should be) parts of having a dog in your life. One of the most easily recognizable pieces of the American landscape is the image of the man or woman strolling happily along with their dog on leash alongside them. So where do things go wrong? What happens to disturb this placid picture of almost Zen-like tranquility? Lots, but it really is an easy thing to fix, so hang in there! One of the first things I look for is the type of equipment the person is using to walk their dog. This one small, yet easily corrected thing can have a tremendous outcome on how the walk unfolds. There are so many awesome new apparatuses for dog walking now on the market that it’s absolutely silly not to take advantage of them and make your life and your dogs life so much more enjoyable. First up, my current favorite for correcting some of the easier cases, is the front-end harness. This neat invention has taken the center-pull harness (one of my least favorites) and put the leash clip in the front on the chest strap, so when a dog pulls forward he actually finds that he is being turned to either the left or right side, depending on where the handler is. What I love so much about this particular harness is that the handler only uses a tenth of the effort that was previously used to walk the dog. For more stubborn pullers there’s the head lead or “gentle leader”, “halti” or whatever name this particular apparatus may be currently called. This is the restraint which goes over the snout and fastens behind the top of the neck, with the leash fastening under the chin. I normally only recommend this for the most powerful, stubborn pullers as it can cause some dogs to react and has to be introduced slowly. Once you have the proper equipment selected for your dog,
40
July 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
getting out the door is the next step and can be the most important one, as it will set the pace for the walk. Make sure your dog is in a relaxed state of mind and isn’t staring intensely past you at the door. I like to have my dogs give me just a little eye contact at first, just to let me know they’re engaging me in this process. Once I have that, we can begin. Invite them out with a verbal prompt or hand signal but keep the energy calm. Once you are out the door and actually on the walk, make sure you’re not allowing your dog to criss-cross back and forth in front of or behind you. The general rule of thumb is: whatever side you start the dog on, finish with him on the same side. This ensures that the dog isn’t turning the walk into a chaotic exercise. If your dog is zigzagging, try to pull up instead of back to make corrections and try to make them fast, as excessive strain on the leash can actually amplify an existing problem. Another thing I like for my dogs to do on the walk is to give me an occasional glance to let me know they’re aware of my presence and we’re doing this exercise together. When heading back to the house remember re-entry works the same way as the departure, slow and calm. Remember, it’s YOUR house. Help convey that to your dog by not dropping the leash and allowing him to go run off somewhere in the house. Keep it calm, keep it relaxed and keep it FUN!

Rachel and Ray, a sweet pair born May 2012, have been too often overlooked. Ray is a friendly & outgoing yet still calm declawed “buddy-cat.” His sister Rachel is also declawed & is an adorable, somewhat reserved (but not for long), nofuss, unassuming LOVE of a cat. Rachel’s a big-time lap-cat once you’ve gained her trust. They take great comfort in one another, but also politely tag-team and share lap-time with people. Ray will usually step down to give Rachel the longest lap-time, as a good big brother would. No sibling rivalry here -- only a tremendously compatible and sweet relationship that could be extended easily to the right person. They’re fully and lovingly vetted.

Continued from page 13 about that! They also said if I was not chained my neck would feel better, and maybe they could let me come in sometime, especially when it is cold outside. She offered them a free fence for the yard, if they would have me neutered. After a few days they agreed. Of course, I was not happy when they first came over to build the fence. I did not like people in my yard. They gave me a few treats, put me in a car and took me for a ride. It was scary, I have never been in a car before. The next day I was home, it was so good to see everyone in my family. A week later, the people came back with a truck and some wires. I was not as mad this time because I thought they were going to give me some more treats and take me for another ride. But to my surprise, they did something even better. They put up that wire and cut my chain into little pieces. I was free, finally “Off The Chain”. I ran and ran and ran! The kids from my family came out and chased me. They threw balls and I ran and picked them up. I took the balls back to them, wagging my tail begging for them to throw the ball again. I licked all the people in the yard and I thought about the times I used to run with my brothers and sisters. I hope they are free from the chain as well.
If you have a dog like Tommy or know someone who does in Guilford County, please contact Unchain Guilford. Our mission is to encourage, educate and help build a safer community where dogs are a part of the home and family. Unchain Guilford is a fence build initiative to provide proper housing and containment for animals in Guilford County who are currently being tethered. In November 2013, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners approved an ordinance that prohibits unattended tethering of dogs, effective March 1, 2014. Residents have 12 months from the effective date to become compliant. Unattended tethering is PROHIBITED in all municipalities and areas within Guilford County except within the city limits of Gibsonville and High Point where local ordinances apply. The United Animal Coalition, the non-profit organization that operates the Guilford County Animal Shelter, has partnered with the community leaders to organize Unchain Guilford. Building free fences is a very effective and gratifying way to help large numbers of chained dogs. We regularly witness dogs who are depressed and stressed on their chains, then they become relaxed and playful when released into their newly fenced yards. Relationships between the dogs and their owners are enhanced once they have a space in which to enjoy each other’s company. We operate solely from donations given by kind and compassionate people and companies like you. There are a variety of ways to support Unchain Guilford, including volunteering your time and giving a monetary gift. You may also sponsor the fence build for a specific dog and donate supplies and fence materials. Please visit www.UnchainGuilford.com for more information.

He could fall victim to a cat that is a bully. I enjoy naps, eating, and all the other things we Basset Hounds are famous for.

Unattended Tethering/ Chaining of Dogs Prohibited in Guilford County Important Facts Concerning the New Law
Q&A
The Guilford County Board of Commissioners approved an animal ordinance that prohibits the unattended tethering/chaining of dogs in Guilford County effective March 1, 2014.* Residents have 12 months from the effective date to come into compliance with the ordinance. Unattended tethering is PROHIBITED in all municipalities and areas within Guilford County except within the city limits of Gibsonville and High Point where local ordinances apply.
What is unattended tethering/chaining? Unattended tethering/chaining is restraining a dog with a chain, cable, wire or other device to a tree, post or similar object without its owner present while the dog is tethered/chained. —Is walking your dog on a leash considered tethering? No, walking a dog with a hand held leash is allowable and encouraged. —Is it OK to be outside with my dog while it is tethered? Yes, attended tethering/chaining is legal in Guilford County. —What are the reasons for the new ordinance? This ordinance will improve public safety issues, reduce unwanted litters of puppies, provide increased safety and humane treatment of dogs, and reduce accidental choking and injuring of dogs as a result of unattended tethering.
What are the alternatives to tethering/chaining? Train your dog to be an inside dog, install a dog pen outside your home, build a fence around your yard or remain outside with your dog when it is being tethered/chained. How does the adoption of this ordinance affect county resources? Other jurisdictions have shown that tethering/chaining restrictions: —Decrease the number of reported dog bites —Reduce unwanted litters of puppies —Reduce cruelty cases
About Guilford County Animal Control The mission of Guilford County Animal Control is to protect humans against rabies and ensure the well being of the animal population within Guilford County. It is the responsibility of this division to enforce all state and county ordinances pertaining to animals. This includes the new Unattended Tethering/ Chaining ordinance. How much time do people have to comply? March 1, 2014 – March 1, 2015: one year education and outreach program.

Come Ride with Us! High Caliber Stables (HCS) was established in 2008 by Mary and Evan Orr. It is the fulfillment of their lifelong dreams to provide an environment where the love and respect for the American Saddlebred horse is teamed with excellent instruction and training. High Caliber is a welcome spot for young and old, beginners and advanced riders. Both Mary and Evan, owners of HCS, are graduates of William Woods University in Fulton, MO. They each hold degrees in Equine Science, and each bring work and show experience gained at premier Saddlebred barns throughout the country to the creation of HCS. Mary holds a master’s degree in education, is a certified riding instructor by the American Riding Instructors Association, and has earned her credentials to serve as a judge at American Saddlebred shows. Evan’s focus is the training and care of young horses, and development of the breeding operations at HCS. The Orrs have received many recognitions and awards for their work, most recently the prestigious 2012 Young Trainers of the Year by the United Professional Horseman’s Association. The facility provides a warm, family friendly environment amidst a beautiful setting, with well trained, safe American Saddlebred horses. A positive learning experience for riders and horses is the goal. Sportsmanship, communication, leadership, dedication, self-confidence, team work and goal setting are the attributes and life lessons demonstrated by the Orrs and the HCS team. The Orrs are guided by the principal, that riding not only develops equestrian skills but, more importantly, cultivates responsibility, relationships and the understanding of working toward and realizing achievements. Madeline on Strati
Every student that rides at High Caliber Stables is treated as an individual and lessons are developed with this idea in mind. All riders begin with 30 minute private lessons. After your level of expertise has been evaluated by our certified instructors, students then move to group lessons which are 45 minutes in length. HCS is a family atmosphere where the goal is for riders to have fun and reach their utmost potential. Riders learn at their own pace and all levels of riding have a place at High Caliber Stables. Lessons are offered Monday-Friday afternoons and early evenings with Sunday afternoon options as well. All lessons are $35 and unlike gym memberships, they can be scheduled on an individual basis. Our competitive and recreational riders together create a fun, safe and supportive group that is focused on friendship and sportsmanship through their mutual love of horses!

Watson is a 2 year old Golden-Great Pyrenees mix who is trim at 93 pounds. He is very tall and very gentle - a gentle giant. Watson is a sweet boy who likes to ride in the car and he walks well on a leash. He plays well with other dogs (he does not try to dominate them despite his size), is surprisingly gentle with cats and reportedly likes children. Though he likes to romp Triad Golden Retriever Rescue and play in the yard, he settles nicely in the house and will cuddle with you. He loves attention, is housebroken and is very handsome and loving. Please visit www.tgrr.org for more information. n

Palm Beach Patty is a beautiful and lively little girl. She’s a bit shy at first but warms up quickly. Her coat is so soft that it’s hard to stop stroking her white front and black tuxedo. Those little white toes are just perfect, too. In her other life, she ran over a hundred races. Even her brother beat her a time or two, but she has bounced back from her disappointments. Patty is young and could easily learn to love your cat, too. Won’t you go visit her? Greyhound Friends of NC She may be your future best friend. For more information, call Blanche Fedor at 336-601-7810, or email greytvolunteer@earthlink.net or visit the Greyhound Friends of North Carolina website, www.greyhoundfriends.com. n
Chopper. Hi I’m an 8 year old male Pug who loves his humans very much. So much in fact, I become anxious when they are not around. A good fit for me would be living with someone who works at home, retired, or posssibly a stay-at-home parent. I love kids and other dogs, so what more could you ask for? I am neutered, up-to-date on vaccinaPug Rescue of NC tions, heartworm negative and on flea medication (must stay on this due to allergies). I do have some food allergies, my foster Mom can fill you in on the details. So if you need a love bug, look no further. I am fostered near Greensboro. Contact Pug Rescue of NC, 336-312-2983 or put in your application at www.pugrescuenc.org, adoption fee is $125. n
