Eva came to the shelter a few weeks ago and was feeling really bad. She had lost some hair due to fleas and ticks and was suffering with mastitis. She is feeling a lot better and is going to the groomers to get shined up like a new penny and will be waiting on a visit from her new owners. Eva likes to run, and we believe she is a Samoyed mix. She weighs around 45 lbs. and is 2-3 yrs. old. Eva is friendly and enjoys meeting people, is quiet and alert and does well with other dogs. This girl really needs a break, she has seen hard times, but that hasn’t dampened her spirits. Call or come by the Randolph County Animal Shelter and meet your new best friend!

Animal Adoption & Rescue Foundation All I Want is to Love Someone By Janice Freeman
T
heir eyes tell it all. You can almost see what they are thinking, “How much longer do I have to wait until I find my ‘forever’ home?” Dogs like Juliet, Scout, Xevon, Destiny, and Onyx are often over-looked by potential adopters who come to meet the dogs at AARF. “All I want is to love someone,” they all seem to be saying. Juliet is an endearing and well-behaved little female Beagle who loves to snuggle and is extremely gentle with kids and adults. “My barking at adoption fairs doesn’t showcase me well, but I’m nervous and overwhelmed by all the excitement on Saturdays,” Juliet says. “If I had a home where I could play with my toys and family members, I would be so happy. I would never make a mess in your home because when I need to go outside, I’ll paw at the door. I love to chase squirrels in my backyard, but I’ve never caught one, just scared them away.” Scout, a female Boxer-mix, has not had an easy life, in spite of her great foster home. She was adopted as a puppy by a family who had to return her, but she is still hoping the right home will come along soon. “I love to run in a fenced-in back yard, and I enjoy long
8
walks with anyone who will take me,” says Scout. “It probably would not be a good idea to put me in a home with cats, but I enjoy playing with other dogs. An active person would be an ideal fit for me.” Poor Xevon has been adopted and returned to AARF through no fault of her own. Xevon’s leg was severely broken, and because her owner could not afford the veterinary expenses, she was brought to AARF where she was given all the medical attention she needed. This bright-eyed Husky is a stunning beauty who is begging for a second chance. “I’d love to curl up beside you and give you all the love I have to share,” pleads Xevon. An energetic lab, Onyx is working on his social skills. He sometimes gets so excited to meet people, Onyx forgets that he is supposed to sit and wait for a treat. What a comical sight it is to watch him with those adorable lab eyes as he makes funny noises when he wants something! “Hey, I’m only trying to get people to understand that I want another treat, and I have learned to speak. I guess humans have a hard time understanding dog talk”, barks Onyx. Have you ever seen a dog dance? Well, Destiny is trying out for “So You Think You Can Dance”, with her “Rottie Wiggle”. What an adorable, loving dog Destiny is! If anyone has ever had any doubts about adopting a Rottie/Doberman mix, have no fears, and look no further. This gorgeous, wellbehaved girl is willing to teach anyone that Rotties get a bad rap. “I love to roughhouse while chasing squirrels in my fencedin yard, can’t wait to go on a walk, and most of all, I enjoy sleeping with my humans in

Cover Story their bed,” says Destiny. “But deep down, all I really want is to have someone to love me!” The often forgotten pets in the AARF program, include, not only dogs, but cats as well. Egypt, a seal-point Siamese; Minka, a torti-point Siamese with beautiful blue eyes; Titus, a gray and white boy; and Prissy, a beautiful calico, have all been waiting for several months for their “forever” homes. Sad stories and passionate rescues make these cats very special. Egypt was found as a kitten inside a car engine at a local shopping center. Those deep blue eyes seem to say “Why have I not been chosen to be a part of someone’s family? I’m beautiful, quiet, and loving, but no one has adopted me.” Minka, so sweet and humble, was rescued from the Stokes County Animal Shelter. “I’m a low-maintenance kind of girl, demanding very little, and giving so much. All I want is for someone to see beyond my toothless grin and accept me as I am.” Titus and Prissy are both “personalityplus” cats, always ready to entertain anyone who will pay attention to their antics. Titus makes everyone laugh and will get into trouble without even trying. But all is forgiven, even when he gets into the closet and hides in the linens. Prissy is a bit shy, but will curl up on a good lap after playing with her toys. “You won’t even have to buy us anything expensive. Just give us your love and a warm, cuddly space to sleep!” Won’t you come by the AARF House at 311 Harvey Street, in Winston-Salem, during our next adoption fair to see if you could make a difference in the life of one of these special dogs or cats? It’s time for their “forever” home!
More available animals from AARF include Egypt (right), Titus (below left), Xevon (below right), Scout (bottom left) and Onyx (bottom right). Drop by the AARF House at 311 Harvey Street in Winston-Salem during the next Adoption Fair (hours are below) to see if you can make a difference in the life of one of these adorable animals.

is a great dog, and would love to find her loving forever home. She is around 6 years old. She has a lovely gait, is very sweet, loves to play, and amuses herself very well!! She will play endlessly in a large, fenced yard. She would like to be an only pet, as she has a tendency to want to chase kitties. She is a bit on the small side for her breed, but that makes her a perfect size for an indoor companion! She’s up-to-date on vaccines, spayed, and ready to play with you!!!

Bonnie.
Looking for a family seeking a fun and friendly challenge. I am house-broken and do my business outdoors, never inside. I adore being outside in a large fenced-in yard. Currently, I share the dog lot with other dogs but it took me a little while to adjust to the company. It’s ok for now...but at first it was a little overwhelming if you want to be top dog, or maybe share the glory with one other dog. Some of my passions are hiking, eating and lounging in the yard. I’m 8 years old and I love kids, although smaller ones sometimes get knocked over by my affection. Call 336-438-2023 and leave a message or email hsac@netpath.net to find out more about me. n

Tim Banker DVM, FAVD, has been in general practice for 38 years and has always seen the need for proper dental care for his patients. In fact, in the 1970’s many people laughed at his dedication to his patients’ dental health. Today he is considered a pioneer in the field of Veterinary Dentistry. Dr. Banker lives in Greensboro and is the owner of Sedgefield Animal Hospital & Dental Center. For the past 30 years he has been a referral dentist and has seen patients from all over the Southeastern United States and Canada.
Heavy dental calculas with severe infection
How Important is Good Dental Health?
Q A
When performing a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment the two most common conditions we find in dogs and cats are Periodontal Disease and Broken Teeth! Here are some of the most frequently asked questions.
What is Periodontal Disease, how does it occur? Periodontal Disease is considered the most common infection in both man and animals. Periodontal Disease is a combination of infection and inflammation of the tissues that surround the tooth (the Periodontium). After eating, a thin film quickly collects on the teeth; the film is invaded by bacteria within 12 hours (Plaque). If this plaque is not brushed off completely within 3 days it will mineralize into Calculus (Tartar).
patients that have significant destruction of tissue under the gum line with no visible sign of problems above the gum line. This can only be detected with a thorough evaluation under anesthesia.
Q A
What can happen if this is left untreated? A: Tissue and bone destruction can lead to pain, discomfort and tooth loss. The infection and inflammation is believed to affect the kidneys, liver, heart and lungs. Chronic infection stresses the immune system. Bad breath can be offensive and unhealthy. Infections and abscesses can occur in the nasal and sinus passages. In extreme cases the jawbone can become chronically infected and jaw fractures can occur.
Q A Q A
What causes the inflammation in my pet’s mouth to occur? The pet’s immune system reacts to the bacteria, causing inflammation. In addition, some of the bacteria release toxins that create additional inflammation. Tissues surrounding the teeth get caught in a ‘war zone’. The result is destruction of these tissues (bone, gum tissue and periodontal ligament). The only way to stop the destructive process is to professionally clean the area (scaling, polishing, root planning & subgingival curettage).
Q A
Q A
ow can I tell if my pet has Periodontal Disease? H Sometimes you can find signs, sometimes you can’t – Periodontal Disease can be silent and go undetected (without a Periodontal Examination). Common Indications of Periodontal Disease can include: bad breath (halitosis), accumulations of plaque and calculus on teeth, Inflamed, red or bleeding gums. Yet, sometimes we have found
Q A
Can Calculus be removed by regular brushing? Calculus has to be professionally removed by scaling the teeth, brushing will not remove it.
What can I do? The first step is to do a complete Periodontal Examination including Dental Radiographs. Based on the findings we can then prescribe the proper treatment which could include scaling, polishing, root planing, GTR (Guided Tissue Regeneration), Periodontal Surgery or Extractions. Once the infection and inflammation is under control your pet will look and feel much better. Once the mouth is clean again we can determine a custom home care and a follow-up program. What about a broken tooth? The facts are broken teeth are just as painful for our pets as they are for us. Broken teeth can lead to internal infection, abscesses, bone and sinus infections. A broken tooth needs to be treated not ignored! Pet will hide and mask the pain it experiences from having broken teeth.
Q A
What are the options for broken teeth? Root canal therapy is often recommended for the canine and chewing (carnassial) teeth. Sometimes vital pulp therapy can be performed in young pets. If the fracture is mild sometimes restorative therapy (fillings) & resin sealants are possible treatment options. Unfortunately, extractions may be the only treatment possible in some teeth. This is always a valid option to eliminate pain and infection.
Q A Q A
Why do you need to take dental x-rays? They are necessary to properly evaluate and monitor broken teeth. It is impossible to properly evaluate an affected tooth without them.
What can I do to avoid broken teeth in my pet? It is important not to give your pet hard objects to chew on (bones, cow hooves, Nylabones®, hard compressed raw hide, ice, etc.). It is a myth that they need them to ‘keep their teeth clean.’ Brushing is the best way to reduce plaque and calculus accumulation to avoid Periodontal Disease. Most people don’t know tennis balls are also bad for your pet’s teeth. The texture of the ball can actually wear down the enamel of the teeth! Soft & flexible rubber toys & balls are much safer. Sedgefield Animal Hospital & Dental Center, located at 4740 High Point Rd. in Greensboro, has been serving the Triad for over 30 years. We will happily assist you with any of your pet’s needs, our motto is “Where Quality and Caring are more than just words.” Give us a call at 336.294.1944, “Like” us on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/SedgefieldVet.

Tank
Tango is a super cute and fun little terrier
and his siblings came to AARF when they were just two days old after being found by emergency personnel in a plastic bag in a storm drain! With the help of a great foster mom, these puppies are healthy, happy and ready for a forever home! We estimate their date of birth to be 4/8/2012. Tank currently weighs around 8 lbs. (the largest of the group!) and we expect him to be a large size when full grown (65-75lbs). Tank’s markings resemble a Boxer/Lab, however, we are not sure what mom or dad really was. Tank is a great dog and ready for a forever home!
mix. We dont know what Tango’s breed is, but we believe him to be a border collie and terrier mix of some sort. Tango weighs around 35 lbs. and is 4 years old. He came to us when his owner was, very sadly, admitted to Hospice Care. Poor Tango was a bit confused at first, but he has learned to trust our volunteers. We have watched him come out of his shell, and now get to see his silly side and how comical he can be. Tango loves to run and play chase with people. He also gets along well with other dogs when properly introduced. We believe that he would do best in a home with a fenced yard and an experienced dog owner. Tango will also need regular grooming and would do well in a home that understands the cost associated with this. Come meet Tango today!
Call AARF at 768-7387 if you are interested in adopting Tank. n

Millie and Steve. Millie and
Meet Wally! He is a spunky, terrier mix currently weighing 3 lbs. We estimate his date of birth to be 04/01/2012, and expect him to be a small dog when fully grown (1520 lbs). Wally is a typical, puppy with a fun and loving personality. He loves to play with toys, and cuddle with his foster mom. Because of his small size, we are recommending a home with children over 12 years of age only. He enjoys the company of other dogs and will make a great pet!
her brother Steve have been in foster care since they were tiny bottle-fed kittens. Born on Feb. 16, 2012, they are very social. When not sleeping they are exploring and playing. Millie and Steve are FeLV positive and will need to go to a home where they are the only cats or all cats in the household are also FeLV positive. Millie is a long haired black kitten; brother Steve is a short haired black kitten.

Princess Peach is a female “tortie tabby” -- aka “torbie” -- about a year old. She was living with some outdoor cats but was getting beat up by the other cats on a pretty regular basis. Now she’s indoors and safe, but really wants a forever home. Come visit Princess Peach at the AARF House during adoption fairs. Thor.
Hi, I’m Thor, and I rule the roost around here! I love to wrestle with my brothers and climb my cat tree. I love food too! I eat everything that’s in my bowl. And some from my brothers’ bowls....ahem...I love to play with toys, with my foster parents, and especially with my brothers. I’ll be very happy in a two cat home. I’m learning good house manners, including using my litter box, only scratching on my post, and not to bite people. I’m learning very well. For all my mischief, I’ve got good manners. Come see me at 311 Harvey St. Call AARF at 768-7387 if you are interested in adopting Thor. n

Bubba.
Watson
Bubba Watson won the Masters and our Bubba won a safe place to live until he is adopted, all on the same day! Bubba was abandoned in front of a Feed & Seed store Easter weekend. Luckily a friend of ARFP rescued him and his life has been on easy street since! Bubba is a Pit Bull mix that LOVES other dogs. He would like nothing better than to have a canine companion in his new home. Bubba was born approximately 1/19/12.
is a brindle Lab mix with a mellow personality. He is one year of age and weighs in at 39 lbs. Watson was abandoned at a Feed & Seed store on Easter Sunday. Named after Bubba Watson, he is a “team player” and gets along with other dogs. Watson loves people and is looking for one to call his own. Looking for a mellow fellow? Here’s your guy!

Jackie.
Kirby.
Yep, we are still looking for someone that wants a small dog and likes this Terrier’s personality. What is Jackie’s personality? In the house, couch potato, likes to look out the window, obedient, lap dog. In the yard, run here, run there, chase a squirrel, acts like a puppy. Jackie is not too fond of cats so a home with an alpha cat or no cat would be best. Jackie is 2.5 years old. Her home could be with a runner or an older couple that stays at home all day. He would actually fit well into many homes. Call us! Jackie would love to come for a weekend visit!
Meet Kirby! This good looking little guy is one of ARFPs young fosters! He and his siblings were removed from their home because their owner wasn’t taking care of them. Now, Kirby has started interviewing for his forever family. He’s asking that his new home have lots of toys and for his new owners to have plenty of time to spend with him. Kirby was born on 12/1/11. We think he and his siblings are part Shepherd and Beagle and maybe part something else too. He is working on house and crate training in his foster home. He is up-to-date on routine vaccinations and has been neutered.

Fresno.
Dooley.
Born on 2/28/12, believe it or not, this guy is the big brother. Daddy was an apple head Chihuahua and mommy was almost a Chihuahua. Fresno is the ring leader with his siblings. He runs and they chase. Currently leaves are his favorite toy and he has a ball running the yard with one in his mouth. Crate training and house training have begun but not yet mastered.
We’re baffled as to why this handsome guy has not found his forever home. If you think you’ve seen him before, you have! He was in last month’s issue and not a single person came to meet him! He says BOO to that! Dooley is approaching 6 months of age, has always been a house pup, is crate trained and house trained, and is loving to everyone and everything he meets! Yes, Dooley knows he has long hound legs but he also knows he is just about as sweet as any puppy with short legs. Do you have a home suitable for a long legged puppy? YES!!!

Bubba is a beautiful kitten that came to FCAC as a newborn with his 5 siblings and mother, Lacey. Lacey’s sweet personality won the batch a spot in foster care yet she was so skinny, she was not producing enough milk for six kittens. Bubba and Photo courtesy of David Reavis his brother were given to another foster mom cat at the same location that readily accepted them! Bubba is the runt and due to poor prenatal care, may never be a large sized cat. Handsome and very affectionate, Bubba has a meow much larger than his little size! All available foster animals can be viewed on Project Pearl’s Facebook page under “foster animals.”

She’s very friendly to strangers and loves to snuggle. She’s young and energetic and would like a family who’s the same! Angel Face.
Tino
is a handsome grey tabby Maine Coon mix with a gentleman’s manner. He seems reserved at first, but soon he will cozy up to you for a little petting and chin scratching. After that, he will follow you everywhere! His tail is so bushy you could use it as a “feather” duster. Hmm…with a little training, perhaps Tino will come clean your house!
Our little Angel Face walks like an angel, talks like an angel, looks like an angel, but don’t let her fool you--she is a Calico, through and through! Just when you think she is being all sweet and loving, she will hide around a corner and pounce on you when you walk by. She looks like an angel, but she is a prankster in disguise!

Mimosa is a special kitty having both calico and tabby markings. Orange and black striped patches are sugar coated with a frosted top coat. Frosty
has a unique fur coat, it looks like the frost on a cold early morning lawn. He’s a cute little guy with big grey eyes that say “I didn’t do it, she did!” That’s what he does when he and his sister Mimosa get into things. The “m” marking over his forehead spells mischief, but how can you resist such a face? For a fuzzy, Frosty fellow, take this kitty boy home. Please contact us by email at cats@nccat.net or visit our website, www.nccat.net. n
Jenkins was the Butler on Scooby Doo and our butler kitty fits his name. He is one cool cat with a black coat with darker black swirls making him a Black Classic Tabby Butler. Dickson is a champagne tabby, very quiet and subtle, but very affectionate if you spend a few minutes getting to know him. He’s the wallflower at the party who turns out to be the most interesting one of all. Like Houdini, he has figured out how to open his cage, so now his cage is locked at night! (Mornings, he could be found sitting in his open cage, looking innocently around—he’d let himself out during the night and go exploring, but then return to his cage before morning, but unfortunately for him he didn’t remember to close his cage once he got back in!). Dickson #13980010, is only $20.00, already neutered so he can go home with you today. Call the Guilford County Animal Shelter at 336-297-5020.

TC was found as a stray in the Asheboro area several weeks ago. His owners were never found so he made his way into our program. He has been castrated and examined by our veterinarian and believed to be around one year old. He is very sweet but still a little nervous. His foster Mom will have him spoiled in no time as he has already discovered that he likes to take food from your hand. For more information please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n
Snow White
Paul
was found with his siblings Peter and Mary when they wondered up to a local cookout. After eating lots of tuna, steak and then finally some healthy kitten food they were taken to a local veterinarian’s office and then came to us. Their purr is so loud our volunteers say it’s almost like they are singing their own song! Peter, Paul & Mary are too funny. They love to play with each other and use each other as pillows when they are tired. They think the world is pretty nice and are ready to explore and see new things. They get along well with dogs and other cats and will make perfect additions to any loving family. If you are interested in adopting little Paul please visit our website www.reddogfarm.com. n
Xena came to Red Dog Farm when
was recently found this spring at a local park in Greensboro. During her routine veterinarian exam, we discovered that she was extremely pregnant! Just a few days later Snow White gave birth to four happy, healthy kittens. Her kittens have since been weaned and are now adopted. Snow White is happy that the kids have left the nest and she is getting all of the attention. She has been spayed, vaccinated and now all this sweet girl needs is to find her forever home. Can you help her out?
her owner passed away from cancer. Xena is a fantastic girl who is very sweet and EXTREMELY well-behaved. She loves to go for walks and is very polite on the leash. When she isn’t walking or enjoying the great outdoors with you, she is happy to crawl into your lap for a snuggle fest, if invited of course. If you aren’t a lap dog kind of person, that’s ok by her as long as she gets plenty of pets while lounging on the floor. She would make the perfect addition to any family. Xena would LOVE to find a family to call her own and to live out the rest of her life with because she thinks life can’t get any better than being with someone you love. Due to her age, Xena’s adoption fee is being waived for the perfect family.

Dutchess
Mack
is an 8 year old Tennessee Walking Horse mare who came to us as a referral from animal control. She is a sweet, social girl who loves human affection. Our veterinarian examined Dutchess, gave her all of her vaccines, floated her teeth and gave her a clean bill of health. She has also had her feet trimmed. She was a tad thin at first but now she looks so good that we’ve actually had to cut her feed back as she is now at a body score of 6. For someone with the experience to work with her, she will make an absolutely fabulous horse.
was surrendered to Red Dog Farm when his owners could no longer care for him. He is very sweet and just adorable with one ear up and one ear down. His hair is so soft and he loves to be petted. Mack is a little timid when he first meets new people but will quickly warm up to you after a few treats and ear rubs. He hasn’t been held very much and is a little jumpy when you first pick him up but his confidence is growing each and every day with us. We think he is an absolute great rabbit.

SPECIFIC BREED & VARIOUS LOCAL RESCUE GROUPS Contact information is listed with each featured animal. Momma Brenna.
Hello there — my name is Momma Brenna. Why “Momma” you ask? Because my job all of my life was to make puppies for my owner. But that changed when CBHR rescued me. I’ve gone from making Carolina Basset puppies to playing with them — my two Hound Rescue young four-legged sisters, that is. Even though I’m 9 years old and they’re only about 1, I give them a run for their money! I’m an all-around happy girl who knows how to use the doggy door and how to be a polite houseguest. I love to sleep on doggie beds, play in the yard, or have a good cuddle with my foster parents. I’m a healthy gal, so if you want a hound who’s mature but ready for adventure, call CBHR and ask for me! For information about Momma Brenna or CBHR’s other available basset hounds, email rgering@triad.rr.com n
Rummy. “The
Four Seasons Boxer Rescue
Rum-a-nator” is an energetic boy who is super sweet and loves your company. Rummy is around three years old and is ready for his new family. He is house/crate trained and gets along well with other dogs. As you can tell by his photo, he’s quite handsome with a happy-go-lucky smile!
If you are interested in Rummy, or if you’d like more information, visit our website www.FourSeasonsBoxerRescue.com. n
Dolce is a lovely Dobergirl who came to us from a shelter. She had apparently been removed from a home where she was allowed to run loose in the neighborhood. Dolce is 15 months old and is full of youthful enthusiasm and energy, though she is very responsive and eager to Doberman Rescue of the Triad engage with her human. She loves to run and play and is great in the car. Dolce is house trained and good with older children and other dogs. She is current on all vaccinations, plus microchipped and spayed. Dora Dora was rescued from a puppymill and is busy learning all about “just being a dog”... part of her exploring included digging holes! When Dora first arrived at BTRNC, she would not come out of her crate to eat or go to the bathroom. Mellow Dora has blossomed since first arriving and is a very adjusted girl for what she has endured. Her only lasting flashback is the way men once treated her, so Boston Terrier Rescue of NC she does not care for them. Dora is crate and leash trained but is still having trouble with house training! She has a slight heart murmur and a hernia. Dora does need a family that will be devoted to helping her learn about “just being a dog”. She needs a fenced in yard and would love a canine or feline companion and children who are patient with her as she continues to trust. Call 339-4368 if you are interested in adopting Dora. n
Snoopy is a charming five year-old brindle dachshund. He was surrendered to rescue when his former owner could no longer care for him, much to his foster mom’s delight! At 14 lbs., this sweet little boy is a couch potato – if you’re sitting back and relaxing, chances are you’ll have Snoopy in your lap every Almost Home Dachshund single time! He is a perfect fit for an adult or a family with older children, Rescue Society and would do great in a multi-dog family. Snoopy loves walks in the park and rides in the car. He will need continued help with his house training, so he’ll need a home with people who will provide him with structure as well as compassion and love. Snoopy is almost there; he just needs the right people to finish up his house training. Go online at www.almosthomerescue.org for more information. n
Maggie is a wellbehaved, lovely six-year-old tri-colored AKC-registered Springer Spaniel. She is good with children, good with other dogs, and has lived all her life with a gentleman who loves her English Springer Spaniel dearly but can no longer care for her. She is up-to-date on all her shots but does need routine care for allergies. She is crate-trained, house trained and loves to chase tennis balls and those exciting birds and squirrels outside so we’ll want her to have a safe fenced-in yard at her new home. If you would like to know more about Maggie, please send an email to ESRACarolinas@gmail.com or call 336-223-6056 and we’ll tell you about the ESRA application process. n
Success Story
Brandtley
A
by Denise & Rickey Coe
fter my sweet companion of 11 years, Sparkle passed away from congestive heart failure in October, it wasn’t long until my heart longed for the pitter patter of little furry feet in the house again. Since I had great luck previously through the website Petfinder, I decided that is where I would start looking for our next furry family member. I started my search and eyed several different dogs I was interested in. I emailed a couple of various adoption groups but to my disappointment, the dogs I asked about were no longer available. I was getting a little discouraged when I decided to look one last time. As I looked, I came across a photo of a fairly chubby, long earred doggie named Brandtley. His description indicated that he was a mix of Corgi & Boston Terrier. As soon as I saw those ears, I was hooked! I didn’t even call my husband to talk it over, I immediately emailed the adoption group and asked if he was still available for adoption. Within an hour or so, I received an email telling me that he was still up for adoption and asked if/when I wanted to meet him. I was overjoyed but yet a little nervous. I think I was still in a little shock, things were moving so quickly. I made an appointment to drive out the next day to meet him. When I arrived I was escorted into the room where I would spend some time with Brandtley. When they brought him in, he was a little shy at first, but I could tell our connection was immediate. We played ball for a while and a gave him belly “scritches” until it was time to go. I talked to the owner of the adoption group and told her that I was in LOVE and that I thought Brandtley would be a great addition to our family. The following day one of the adoption volunteers brought him out to our house. He met all the family members (including the cats) and walked through every room making sure to check everything Brandtley was Triad Happy Tails’ December out. He quickly 2011 cover model, he has since retired. found his “spot”
Brandtley and Rickey (owner of Rickey Joe’s in Germanton) enjoying a quiet moment together. on the couch and nestled in for a nap. It wasn’t long before he settled in and began acting as if he had always been here. He still likes to follow you all over the house and typically won’t stay in a room where he is by himself. He likes to destroy stuffed animals with squeakers, chew on rawhides and LOVES to play tug-of-war. Beware though if you drop a sock! If you do, it’s a goner. He loves to chew those as well, but mommy doesn’t mind. Brandtley has brought joy and laughter back in to our home. After my precious Sparkle passed, I thought that my heart would take forever to mend but every time Brandtley crawls into my lap, looks in to my eyes …my heart melts! When I come home from work or when I’ve been away from the house and I see him, he just makes me smile. I find myself thinking about him during the day and can’t wait to get home to play with him or just snuggle with him on the couch.
Brandtley forgets ALL about me as soon as he hears my husband’s key hit the door, but that’s okay, I know he has enough love to go around for the both of us! I look forward to the many, many years that we all have together and the happiness that we will share having Brandtley in our home! www.triadhappytails.com June 2012 35

Summer was found as a stray.
We think she is around four years old and we are pretty sure she was used for breeding before she was dumped. She is very friendly and gets along well with other dogs. Cats, we don’t know about. Summer is a little bit socially awkward and would greatly benefit from having a more experienced canine sibling in the home. She loves to play with German Shepherd her foster sister and is very vocal, a little bit Rescue & Adoptions of a Drama Queen. old Golden mix who weighs about 35 lbs. She is very sweet and loves attention. She is a perfect example of a “velcro” dog - she will be where you are. She gets along with other dogs, cats and children and rides well in a car. She has learned some manners in her foster home, but will benefit from more training including when walking on a leash. If you want a dog to be your “baby,” she’s the one.
Meet Polly, a 1-1/2 year old female Jack Russell Terrier, who weighs 9 lbs. Polly was rescued from a rural NC animal shelter where her owner surrendered her. She is a well-behaved, sweet and loving shorty JRT. Polly loves to be held and cuddled and gets along nicely with other dogs. She is on the quiet side and not a barker. Polly’s docked tail is always wagging. She rides Finding Great Homes well in the car and enjoys a walk on for Jack Russell Terriers the leash. She can never get enough of fetching her tennis ball (her specialty is leaping to catch balls in midair!) but she’s just as happy to relax on the couch for a good cuddle. She walks well on a leash, and she’ll sit and come on Lab Rescue of NC command. Mindy is housetrained and hasn’t had any accidents while her foster mom is at work during the day. She loves meeting new people, and will eagerly shower them with kisses! She’s great with kids and gets along with the other dog in the home just fine. Flynn has the playfulness of a puppy and enjoys engaging in games of chase and tug-of-war with his closest doggie friends. He’s inCarolins Care Bullies terested in cats (as potential playmates), but hasn’t had much exposure to them. Lotte. I am about 16 lbs. and 1-1/2 years old. I had to leave my first home because my folks were older and they felt I would be happier with a younger family. I am an energetic, people-lovin, athletic NC Schnauzer Rescue and playful, happy dog. I have a voracious appetite and am not picky at all. I am pretty much housetrained as long as my English (Doglish) is understood and someone walks me or lets me out. I am not even afraid to be noisy at night if I need to be let out. I have a slight case of separation anxiety so I might cry a bit at first if I am left alone. My ideal home would be one where I could hang out all day with my human and another young dog around who would like to chase and play, as I do. You must be a North Carolina resident in order to adopt from NC Schnauzer Rescue.

n Training Your Pet
Can You Teach an Old Dog New Tricks? By Michelle Rahenkamp
C
an you teach an old dog new tricks? We have heard this saying through numerous channels throughout our lives, but I’ve been asked this question in a literal sense quite a few times in my 10 years of dog training. The answer is very simple: ABSOLUTELY! Dogs develop their personalities when they are puppies, but as they get older they develop their way of certain behaviors. Although personalities cannot usually be altered in dogs, behavior can be redirected and trained. Dominant dogs will not become super-submissive and fearful dogs will not become daredevils. Training older dogs must be approached with a mindset of patience. Like people, all dogs have their own personality and no two are identical; so what is the best way to approach dog training with an older dog? Since none of us want to work for free, don’t expect your dog to either. It is best to get your dog enrolled into a program that uses positive reinforcement and one that has classes centered on older dogs, such as the classes held at Camp Bow Wow in Greensboro. Positive reinforcement rewards the dogs for doing the correct behavior, but ignores the rest. Punishment techniques are UNACCEPTABLE and should never be used, especially on older dogs. The very first dog I trained was a nine-year old Dachshund mix (Pooh) who happened to be my mother’s dog. She was a rescue and overall well-behaved, but as with most older dogs, she was set in her ways. She knew how to sit, but that’s about all. She usually laid around the house all day and her one excitement of the day was when my mother would come home from work. When I began training Pooh, my mother was very skeptical
38
saying “she’s too old to learn anything new”. Within in two days, Pooh was laying down on command, shaking and “sitting pretty”. My mother couldn’t believe her eyes. From then on, we taught her numerous things to keep her mind “fresh” and the bond between Pooh and my mother grew stronger. When Pooh was 15 she was diagnosed with cancer, but that didn’t stop her spirits. She would still train like a pup! Pooh passed away in December 2010, but to this day my mother is still thankful for the experience of training Pooh and continues to train her new pup. Your older dog can learn something as simple as sit, stay or down in a matter of a few days in class. Whether you want to shape a certain behavior such as barking or just want to go on a stroll with your dog without him walking you, there is a class for you. Older dogs can even be taught more complicated behaviors such as “bang” your dead, roll over, or shake. The more complicated “tricks” are trained in stages as to shape the dog to understand the command. Keep this in mind the next time you are looking for a new addition to your family. There are many wonderful older dogs at the local shelters that are overlooked due to fear that they cannot be trained. I know you may be thinking, my dog is too old for training or my dog just lays around all day; why do I need to train my dog? There are many benefits other than the behavioral aspect of training your dog. The simple act of spending time training your dog will bring you both a sense of accomplishment and a stronger bond than was ever imagined. Not only will it improve the quality of your dog’s life, but it will improve yours as well. Have you ever seen your mother or grandmother doing
June 2012 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
a crossword puzzle or reading? The same applies for your dog, “if you don’t use it, you lose it!”. Keeping your aging dog occupied and learning new things keeps the dog’s mind active and alert, even into old age. The simple stimulation and interaction of training may even increase your dog’s life span and overall health. Next time you look at your dog, don’t let the grey fur and creaking joints fool you, old dogs are more than capable of learning new tricks. The classes held at Camp Bow Wow are for dogs of ALL ages, from puppyhood to older adulthood. Call (336) 323-3133 to enroll your dog today!

When she first got Kobe after the death of her husband, Winnie was not planning on training Kobe as a therapy dog. In fact, a Yorkshire Terrier was a bit of a new experience for Winnie, who had always been more of a poodle person—back in the day, she showed standard poodles, winning many awards and trophies. She dreamed of returning to the show ring and planned to train Kobe for obedience. “I even went to one class,” she says with a laugh.
