FROM THE EDITORS
W
e would like to dedicate this issue to ALL of our advertisers because Triad Happy Tails Magazine could not exist without them. Our advertisers allow us to feature the adoptable animals free of charge to our local shelters and rescues, including 37 different organizations in the June issue! A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to every advertiser for helping us bring much needed awareness to these groups. Please check out the list below and let these businesses know you appreciate their dedication to the homeless animals around the Triad by using their services and buying their products whenever possible. We not only have the support of animal related businesses we have auctioneers, restaurants, insurance companies, heating and cooling contractors, real estates firms, apartment rental agencies, garden centers, medical professionals, furniture stores,
florists and the list goes on with all types of businesses and services. Thanks again to Deb Printup Jennifer Frazier our veterinarians and our professional trainers who each month contribute valuable free advice to our readers. These dedicated individuals give of their time to help us all be better pet parents. Next month will be our third year anniversary issue featuring the winner of our cover model contest. We are amazed in how much we have learned and how many great people we’ve met since beginning our publication.
Thanks!
Our Advertisers
Please look over the list of businesses below and support them whenever possible. These companies are the reason we are able to offer the shelters and rescue organizations free space every month. Stem Cell Successes
We are celebrating 18 months of successful stem cell therapy for treatment of various forms of painful degenerative arthritis. Here are a few testimonials from owners about their pets’ rejuvenation after their procedures. Spicy (pictured) is a very arthritic lab who surprised her owner after her treatment by romping and swimming, which she had been unable to do.
Spicy no longer takes any medication. Her mom told us, “This therapy has been nothing short of a miracle.” Haley is a severely arthritic shepherd mix who could barely function. After her stem cell therapy, Haley became active again. Her mom said, “It gave her a whole new lease on life. Without it, I wouldn’t have her.” Molly is an 11 year old lab with arthritic hips, knees, elbows and shoulders. Her mom reports, “The stem cell treatment has eased her symptoms, making it easier for her to move and rely on less medication.” Baby Betsy was our first patient to receive stem cell treatment for immune mediated poly arthritis. She was an elementary school ambassador
who helped her mom teach every day. Betsy was too ill to work any more but now she is back at school fulltime. Her results were so remarkable that she was featured on local TV news. Visit our website and see our patients go from pain to play! If your pet could benefit from stem cell therapy, let us help!

Olive was abandoned by her
owners and fended for herself outside. It was a miracle that she was not killed by other stray animals, because she is quite deaf. She was brought to our hospital during the cold Winter of 2012. She’s about 11-12 years of age. Unfortunately, she contracted FIV (Feline Immunodefficiency Virus) living outside. It is not contagious to people but can be to other cats especially if the infected cat is cat aggressive. Sadly, Olive does not get along with other cats and will have to live in a household where there are no other cats. She is extremely affectionate with people and will spend hours sleeping on your lap, purring herself to sleep. If you have room in your heart and house for a single, older cat, please give Olive a second chance at a happy home. She will be sure to reward you with lots of purrs and love.

Layla is a full blooded female chocolate lab that has AKC papers. Her date of birth is 7/9/2006. She was turned into our local shelter where we rescued her. She is such a happy girl with her tagging wagging constantly! She is a strong dog so a home with older children would be the best fit for her. She LOVES Animal Rescue of Stokes County to ride in a golf cart so she would be a great dog for a farm. She gets along with other dogs and loves everyone she meets. She is up-to-date on all vaccinations, spayed, microchipped, heartworm prevention, and flea and tick prevention. If you think Layla would be a good fit with your family, please email us at: arsc2004@gmail.com.. n
Baby Girl. I am approximately 3 years old, spayed, UTD on my shots and on HW preventative. I am very active and love to race around my foster mom’s big fenced in back yard with the other foster dogs. I sleep under the covers with my foster mom and some of the other foster dogs. I usually wake my foster mom up before her alarm goes off because I don’t want her to be late for work and I need atChihuahua Rescue tention early in the morning. My foster mom says that I am a typical Chinese Crested (CC) in that I love attention and I either want to be in your lap or right next to you. I don’t have the typical long whispy hair that most hairless CCs have but my foster mom thinks that this trait makes me more beautiful and special. I am very obedient and am learning new things every day. If you think you’d like to give me a forever home, please contact my foster mom for an application at wildlifeed2@aol.com n

CAT’S CRADLE
“Not only will committing to help these cats and kittens leave you purring with happiness, but you will get to experience all the purrs of some very happy cats getting a new lease on life.”
Adoption Program 100 Ways to Purr More By Donna Gardner
H
ave you purred lately? Cats purr when they feel good and so do humans when they do good deeds. Can you hear it? No? Well Feral Cat Assistance Program (FCAP) has just what you need to get your purr back. Our foster care and adoption program (Cat’s Cradle Adoption Program or CCAP for short) is looking for some humans who have lost their purr. You may be familiar with how the FCAP program helps caregivers manage feral cat colonies in the
Triad by providing education, spay and neuter, vaccinations and support with the intention of reducing the populations of feral cats. Unfortunately, Mother Nature sometimes gets there first and kittens are born into these colonies. CCAP scoops up the kittens while they are young and social, and puts them up for adoption. CCAP also helps when a social stray is abandoned into a feral colony. As you can imagine, all this takes a group of dedicated and energetic volunteers to keep the process working. This is where Above, Artemis, a playful and affectionate cat who will do best in a home that is a bit on the quiet side so that she can have all of the attention. Left, Nutmeg, an extremely playful cat who loves nothing better than a wand toy or a laser pointer. Call the Cat’s Cradle Adoption Program at 336-378-0878, Line #3, to offer Artemis or Nutmeg a loving home. the purr comes in! Not only will committing to help these cats and kittens leave you purring with happiness, but you will get to experience all the purrs of some very happy cats getting a new lease on life. There are probably MORE than a hundred ways to help, but here are a few key ways you can “purr” it forward:
12
June 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
• Provide a temporary foster home for a cat or kitten until adopted.
• Provide respite care for a cat or kitten that is being showcased at PetSmart so they can be cage-free for a “vacation”.
• Take cats to the Fox 8 Pet of the Week segment one time per month.
• Transport foster cats or kittens to weekend adoption fairs.
• Greet the public at our adoption fairs and tell them how great our feline friends are.
• Data entry to keep our microchip log current.
• Maintain the CCAP adoption folders and keep the paperwork in order.
• Play, play, play with our foster cats and kittens and help keep their cage apartments clean and tidy. (and share purrs too)
• Take creative pictures of our foster cats and kittens to showcase them to potential adopters.
• Vet assistants and vet techs ... we can use your help too!
Make a difference and feel great about yourself by volunteering once a week, once a month or whenever suits your schedule. Easy training is provided. Check out our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/fcapnc, and website, www.feralcatassistance.org and see all our “purrfect” volunteer opportunities. We can’t wait to meet you!

Butch
is a 5-1/2 year old Lab/Pit Bull mix. He was adopted from us last year and had found his best friend and forever home. Sadly, Butch’s owner passed away recently and he is waiting for a new best friend to give him a loving home. Butch is house-trained, loves toys and balls to play with, but will need to be the only pet in the house. He would also be better suited in a home with children older than 7 or 8. Butch is a sweet boy who just needs another chance at love and happiness. He is neutered, current on shots and has a very special adoption fee!

Pongo is a 4 year old Harlequin Macaw! He loves his toys, lots of attention, and baths outside while soaking up the sun. Pongo would do best in a home without young children. He doesn’t seem to be bothered by dogs, but would need constant supervision while outside his large cage. Pongo came to Parrot Guardian in 2012. He is a wonderful bird once he warms up to you but would need patience and Parrot Guardian understanding while getting to know his new family. Pongo needs an experienced bird parent who is not intimidated by his feisty attitude! His current diet consists of RoudyBush pellets, fresh fruits, vegetables, pastas and grains. Becca is a little brown tabby girl born about Feb. 2009. She has a cute little bobtail, which appears to be the result of an injury sometime in her past rather than her breed. Becca loves people, likes to cuddle close and be petted, and doesn’t mind being kissed on the nose. But Becca doesn’t like other animals so she needs a
home where she will be the only furkid. She is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped and is FeLV/ FIV negative. For more information visit www.taillesscatrescue.com or e-mail taillesscatrescue@hotmail.com n

Q A
Leptospirosis
What is Leptospirosis and Its Treatment? Can Humans Contract This from Animals? Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can affect various species of animals including dogs, humans and various wildlife species. Cats are rarely infected, but on some occasions they can contract the infection. The bacteria is shed in the urine of infected animals and can survive in temperate fresh water for six months or more. Dogs are most often exposed due to environmental contamination of water or soil from wildlife. The wildlife that most commonly expose humans, include rodents, raccoons, opossums and buffaloes. Domestic animals such as dogs, swine, cattle, goats, sheep, and horses are other sources for human infection. This disease is present throughout the world, including the southeastern United States. The Centers for Disease Control finds dogs in both rural and urban areas are at risk for infection. Once an animal is infected, the bacteria can travel through the bloodstream and infect various organs. Infection ranges from sub clinical, meaning no symptoms, to life threatening. Most often in dogs, it causes liver or kidney failure. Symptoms can include fever, lethargy, cough, poor appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, increase in thirst and urination and yellowing of the skin and membranes. Infected animals, including dogs, also serve as a reservoir for infection in humans. Leptospirosis infection in humans cause similar symptoms and can also be fatal. Humans who are considered at highest risk for infection include farmers, mine workers, sewage plant workers, slaughter house workers, veterinary or animal caretakers, fishermen, military personal and those involved in outdoor freshwater activities. If Leptospirosis is suspected, there is a blood test that can confirm infection. Because the infection is bacterial, it is treated by use of the appropriate antibiotic and with supportive care. Dogs have a good chance of recovering as long as it’s diagnosed and treated early. There are effective vaccinations for dogs available in the
United States. It is recommended for dogs to receive an initial set of two vaccinations three weeks apart followed by annual boosters. If you have questions about whether your dog should be vaccinated against Leptospirosis, you should speak to your veterinarian.

Meia.
My name is Lucy and I am a very sweet little baby who loves to play and wrestle with toys. My mom wandered up onto her rescuer’s farm and was pregnant. When we turned 6 weeks old AARF stepped in to help find us forever homes. If you would like to meet me or one of my sisters or brothers, please come to the AARF adoption fairs on Saturdays from noon until 4 at 311 Harvey Street in Winston Salem. I cannot be adopted outside a one hour radius of Winston Salem due to a home visit being a part of the adoption process.
My name is Meia, (Mamma Meia). I was rescued living on the end of a chain in the mud with my 2 week old puppies that I had given birth to in a burrowed out mudhole. I am such a sweet and loving mamma who raised 5 beautiful babies. I am very smart and respond immediately when my name is called. You can meet me at the AARF adoption fairs on Saturdays from noon until 4 at 311 Harvey Street in Winston Street. Due to a home visit being a part of the adoption process I cannot be adopted outside a one hour radius of Winston Salem.

Bob Barker was found as a stray. We assume he was abused at some point because he’s very cautious and submissive when anyone comes near. He does not have an aggressive bone in his body. Speaking of bones, you can see all of his right now! He weighed a dainty 14.4 lbs. when first found. His foster mom is feeding him 3 times a day to help him gain weight. Bob would do great in any Boston Terrier Rescue home setting as long as he has a dog bed, blanket and lap to curl up in. Ghiselle.
Sweet Ghiselle is a happy little girl that came to ARFP when her homeless mommy decided to have her babies underneath a front porch. She is a happy little kitten that will enrich the lives of some lucky family. Call ARFP at 574-9600 to offer Ghiselle a loving home. n
Opie. Redheaded
Abbey and her sister Alley were rescued from a loving woman who had cared for their mom as a stray when she wandered into her yard. Sadly, due to health challenges from stage four breast cancer and liver cancer she could not provide care to the pups. Abbey is about 8 weeks old and her mom is a Black Lab. Abbey is the bigger of the two pups and is best described as playful, cuddly and anxious to learn. Born in mid-March, Abbey is still very young so frequent naps are always on the schedule which leaves plenty of time for snuggling. Abbey is doing great with sleeping in a crate at night and is learning quickly about potty-training. Call ARFP at 574-9600 to offer Abbey a loving home. n

Janie
Pearl,
is an absolutely gorgeous solid blue domestic short hair. Janie is loving, affectionate, calm and previously declawed. Though hard to believe, she was dumped at the shelter after 12 years of living with a family that she thought loved her. Fortunately, FCAP was able to rescue Janie from the shelter and she is now recovering nicely from some health issues, and will soon be available for adoption. This sweet 12 year old girl deserves a loving home with people who will love her for life and never let her down again.
our beautiful 5 year old silver girl with the lovely green eyes, is still waiting for her furr-ever home. Pearl can be a “bit fussy” when put in a new situation with people she doesn’t know, but once she becomes comfortable, she promises to make a wonderful, loving feline companion. Pearl will run up to you with her tail straight up to be scratched on the head and neck. Pearl would love to be the center of attention in her new home and be an only kitty; however, she might be ok with another docile cat or a calm dog. A relatively quiet home without small children would suit her best. If you want to shower all of your love and affection on one wonderful kitty, Pearl just might be your girl!

His adopter didn’t think he would adjust to a move to another house and the possibility of a baby joining the family. Sidney is now looking for a forever home with a family that is committed to him for life. Sidney is 4 years old and is used to smaller dogs and will even play with them if the dog is gentle. He loves the company of people and is a great little companion. He is real talker with a big voice, but we find that endearing. He is a real character with personality plus! You won’t have a dull moment with this wonderful boy!
soul that wants tons of love and affection, but she has a playful side and loves to chase anything dangled in front of her. She loves cuddles and chin rubs and she will turn into a purr machine. Her gorgeous soft coat will make you want to snuggle with her too. Allie wants to find a nice quiet home where there is lots of time to hang out with her human friends and relax. is an adorable boy who still has a lot of kitten in him. He is vigorously playful and loves chasing balls and killing toy mice. He loves to play with other cats and even dogs, so it would be great for him to find a home with some furry companions. He remains very loving and affectionate and loves hugs and back rubs, which make him purr quite loudly. He is an entertaining and affectionate feline companion. With that irresistible face and endearing purr-sonality, we can’t figure we out why he hasn’t gone home yet, but we know there is a special home out there for this very special kitty.
derful, sweet, calm boy that is timid, until he gets used to a new situation. Though he was adopted as a tiny kitten, he later found himself in a home with small children, which was not a happy situation for this sensitive kitty. His stress level was increased when they declawed him. He loves to lie on his foster mom’s lap and purr and talk. Kicking his catnip toy, bird watching, and chattering are among his favorite daily activities. Kumal would be happiest in a calm household, with no other pets or children.

Miracle Baby Gibbon Recently Born at the Greensboro Science Center by Steffany Reeve, Marketing Manager Greensboro Science Center
O
n April 29, 2013, Isabella, the Greensboro Science Center’s (GSC) rare and endangered female Javan gibbon gave birth to a baby boy. In both the wild and zoological parks, it is not uncommon for a gibbon mother to abandon its first child. Unfortunately, this is what happened to the Center’s fragile newborn, as he was discovered by a keeper early that morning lying without its mother inside the Center’s gibbon habitat enclosure. However, thanks to the welltrained GSC staff who were quick to respond to this dire situation and coordinate a team effort between zookeepers, curators, and veterinarians, baby Duke, as he is now named, is stable and thriving. To give Duke the best chance of survival, GSC keepers and staff decided to hand-rear him for the next four to six months until he is self-sustaining, then will re-introduce Duke to his parents, Isabella and Leon, in the exhibit within Animal Discovery. Zoo staff are working round-the-clock, seven days a week, to care for the baby by bottlefeeding Duke infant formula, changing his diapers every few hours, and doing enrichment activities and exercises with him to ensure his muscles and grip are strong enough to return to the exhibit with his parents. During the day, a talented core of volunteers from Cone Health’s neonatal unit have provided additional support to help care for Duke, provide supplies, and give keepers a well needed rest. At nearly one month old, baby Duke is healthy, growing (this little guy is still tiny weighing just over 1.1 lbs) and getting stronger each day. While it remains a long road ahead to determine what Duke’s fate will be, Greensboro Science Center staff are optimistic about this miracle baby’s future. During the next few months, GSC visitors may catch a glimpse of baby Duke and his caretakers through the windows of the Animal Hospital in the zoo if the timing is right. Duke’s parents, Isabella and Leon, can be seen out in their exhibit daily and both do get access to see their son each day. Duke is only one of three baby Javan gibbons born in zoos across the U.S. and only one of eight born in the world in the last 12 months.
Zoo staff at the Greensboro Science Center are working round-the-clock, seven days a week, to care for Baby Duke, born on April 29, 2013.
Javan gibbons are one of the rarest gibbon species on the planet and the Greensboro Science Center is the only zoological park on the east coast that exhibits this precious primate. You can follow Duke’s progress and see updated photos and video on the Center’s website (greensboroscience.org) and on our blog (greensborosciencecenter. wordpress.com).

Luna & Dawn are
Maxie, along with her sister, June (not pictured), are two cuties that belonged to an elderly couple who quickly became overwhelmed after two stray cats became several cats and kittens. The couple’s home health care aide assisted in rescuing them and brought them to Red Dog Farm. Maxie is timid, but will warm up with time, stability and patience. She is a beautiful tuxedo cat with white whiskers and loves to be petted. Both young cats are ready to go to their new home(s) today.

Angel & Buddy.
are young sisters who are very timid around people and really need to be in a herd of friendly goats to learn that people are OK. They are currently being fostered near Columbia, South Carolina. They have been vaccinated and dewormed. Because they are so skittish, we will waive their adoption fee for a home where they could be combined with some tame goats. They like horses but do not like dogs or pigs.
While living at her foster home Angel has become great friends with Buddy (an 18 year old Kentucky Mountain Horse). Buddy is a great trail horse. Angel’s foster mom has offered to adopt them out together as a pair since Angel is not rideable, but Buddy is! They make a perfect pair, a trail horse and a horse companion!

Molly Mutton
n
Ginger,
was spotted as a stray sheep in the Vineyards neighborhood area for over a year before anyone could get close to her. A nice family began to feed her in the evenings and eventually won her trust. The family called Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network for help. Red Dog Farm provided a trailer and the family was able to lure Molly into the trailer. She looked as though she had not been sheared in years. Molly is now safely in a Red Dog Farm volunteer’s foster home and has now been sheared. She seems to feel much better! Dr. Talbot of Carolina Equine Hospital examined Molly, gave her vaccines and determined that she is approximately seven years old.
along with her sister, Maryanne (not pictured), were surrendered after their owners could no longer care for them. They are very social and sweet little girls. They have obviously been handled frequently. They are both a year old and have been together their whole life. We would like to keep them together as they seem to enjoy each other’s company.

www.facebook.com/triadhappytails Buffy is a 6 month old female miniature Dachshund who ended up in rescue through no fault of her own nor the fault of her former owner. Sadly, shortly after Buffy’s former owner brought her home, she found out that she had cancer and it became increasingly harder to keep up with Buffy’s Almost Home puppy energy. Buffy is so sweet, loves Dachshund Rescue to go on walks and she will give plenty of kisses to reward you for any attention you give her. She is cratetrained, leash-trained and loves to play. She is not house-trained yet, but she is eager to please and with some continued work, she will be soon. Buffy also loves kids, other dogs and has a healthy respect for cats. Buffy is spayed, microchipped and current on all vaccinations. Visit www.almosthomerescue.org to offer Buffy a loving home. n

ADOPTION IS NOT THE ANSWER, SPAY/NEUTER IS By Bob Slone, President of Project B.A.R.K.
H
as anyone been to the Guilford County Animal Shelter lately and walked through the dog and cat rooms? I have, and a few years ago I volunteered to walk the dogs three times a week. After three months I could not take it any longer. Especially in the dog areas, for as soon as you enter, all the dogs are barking and jumping up in their cages wanting to get out and I have to make the decision ‘which one should I pick’.
photo courtsey of www.whiskertales.net - Div. of Ken Sykes Photography
“All of a sudden you feel good, and then as you walk the dog to the exit you pass all the others dogs who want to be taken out as well and you feel that you let all the others down.” Why are there so many animals and how many of them will be adopted? They are there because their owners did not have the female spayed which resulted in so many unwanted births. Maybe some owners wanted their children to witness birth, then get mama spayed. But when mama gives birth to twelve offspring, then what? Sell them, give them away? In the meantime, 40
who is paying the food bill? Where to keep them? Sell some and then give some away and then what happens? The same thing all over again and more puppies end up at the Animal Shelter. More animals are euthanized, plus more of your tax dollars go out the window. Who do you think pays for the operation of the shelter? All Guilford County residents do, of course. If you are an animal lover, then these numbers are going to make you sick. Nationwide over 3-4 million dogs and cats are euthanized every year. Right here in Guilford County 62% of all cats and dogs surrendered or brought into the shelter by Animal Control were euthanized. This is a disgrace, and there is no reason why these numbers cannot be reduced in half with just a little effort on a responsible owner’s part. Don’t blame the Animal Shelter, blame the irresponsible pet owners. Yes 38% of the animals are adopted or returned to their owners, but 62% are killed. Adoption is not the answer, spay/neuter is. It’s that simple. As President of Project B.A.R.K. I have seen and heard it all over the past few years while distributing free dog houses to low income families in Guilford County. By the way, we provide free spay/neuter services as well. I’ve heard all of the excuses: we just want to have one litter so the kids can see the miracle of birth, (the kids are probably playing videos games). I could never do that to him, (like he knew what you did, blame the vet). We can sell the puppies, (right, it’s not as if these backyard dogs are AKC registered, they are all mixed breeds and in most cases mutts). How much did you get for a mutt puppy, and how much did it cost to feed that puppy for eight weeks? The
June 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
cost to raise and feed a dog for one year is more than the cost of having that dog fixed at a full service vet, it’s a no brainer. If you don’t believe these figures then go to the local flea markets and see what mixed breed puppies are going for. By the end of any weekend they are giving them away to any takers. One comment we hear frequently is that, “I was told it is a good idea to let my pet have at least one litter.” There is absolutely no advantage to letting your pet have one litter. However, there are plenty of advantages to having your pet spayed or neutered at an early age. These advantages include - decreasing the chances of breast tumors later in life, decreasing the chance of cystic ovaries and uterine infections later in life, decreasing the desire to roam the neighborhood, deceasing the incidence of prostate cancer, helping prevent spraying and marking and most importantly it also decreases the surplus of unwanted puppies and kittens. Of course the cost for spay/neuter at a full service vet is going to run in the neighborhood of $ 250.00. Way too much for most families living in the low income bracket, but there are alternatives out there. There are three low cost assistance programs in Greensboro alone, The Humane Society - 299-3060, Sheets Pet Clinic 852-8488, and the S P O T mobile clinic located at the Animal Shelter - 297-5020. If these costs still too high, then check with Project B.A.R.K. and you may qualify for their free or low/cost spay/ neuter program. Their spay/neuter hotline number is 336-965-4059.

Attracting Wild Birds by Barbara Haralson, Greensboro Liz Schmid, High Point Diane Bell, Winston-Salem Owners of Wild Birds Unlimited
I
n the natural order, cats and birds are not compatible, but given the right circumstances, wild birds can be great entertainment for your house cats. Bird feeders that attach directly to the window or are placed on poles just outside the window will stimulate your cats’ attention without posing a threat to the wild birds at the feeder. The birds that come to the feeder will quickly learn that the cats can watch, but are not able to reach them. We heard one instance of a Carolina Wren that came regularly to a feeder on the window, and if the cat was not at the window, the Carolina Wren would peck at the window with its beak until the cat came to watch! It is easy to attract wild birds to your yard, because they find food by sight. Simply fill a feeder with a quality bird seed blend that is primarily black oil Photo courtesy of Aspects, Inc. sunflower or sunflower chips, and it is just a matter of time before you have bird activity. Birds could care less what type of feeder you use, but they do care
42
June 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
about the food that is in it. Inexpensive “Wild Bird Food” has tons of small filler seeds that absolutely no bird in your backyard will eat. That is why it is sold so cheaply. Another food source you can offer is a sugar water solution for hummingbirds. Simply boil 4 parts water for every 1 part sugar, and allow the solution to cool before putting it in your feeder. Store any excess in your refrigerator. There are a variety of feeders on the market, but our Wild Birds Unlimited saucer styles are the easiest to clean and fill, and are the best for both you and your cats to view the hummingbirds. Food is one of the reasons that wild birds come to your yard; the other reasons are for water, shelter, and a place to raise their young. Water is important to birds for drinking, but it is just as important for cleaning their feathers. Their feathers get oily just like your hair when it goes unwashed. In order to fly properly and keep their bodies insulated from the elements, birds must keep their feathers clean. Birds do not swim, so they only want about 1 ½ - 2 inches of water for bathing. These shallow bodies of water evaporate quickly in summer, leaving birds with little natural sources for water. By keeping a shallow water source filled with clean water, you will see birds that you would not otherwise see at your feeders. Not all birds eat seed, but they all drink water! Birds looking for shelter or a place to raise their young will look in your yard for either nest boxes or trees and shrubs. The birds that nest in nest boxes naturally choose the old cavities of woodpeckers, and include Eastern Bluebirds, chickadees, Tufted Titmice, and
nuthatches. Many other birds nest in open nests in the landscape of your yard, including cardinals, finches, robins and hummingbirds. Some birds will nest in anything they find available. Wrens are notorious for their unusual nesting spots, typically selecting some object that is directly on your house. We have heard many accounts of wrens using hanging baskets, door wreaths, umbrellas, garden shoes, grills, and shelves in garages. Wrens will even use a nest box that suction cups directly onto your window, bringing them up nice and close for both you and your pet cats to enjoy. By keeping your cats indoors, and the wild birds outdoors, they all get along very well. If you would like more information, stop by your local Wild Birds Unlimited store in Greensboro, High Point or Winston-Salem. Find out everything you ever wanted to know about attracting wild birds in your own backyard!

WHY I RESCUE by Mark Steed
I
started to name this “Why We Rescue”. But, it occurred to me that I can’t speak for anyone else. I tend to be far too philosophical to be useful. So, I speak for myself in the belief that animal rescue people share some common motivations. Not saying that I know what those are. My wife became involved with N.C. Pug Rescue a long time ago. She loves pug dogs. I got caught in the undertow. I can’t remember the year exactly. It was before our first rescue adoption, Hardy. Maybe 1990-ish. Back then, if I had my way I would never have become involved in rescue. I’m glad I didn’t have my way. Good old Hardy. . .maybe his story can explain why I rescue. In the early nineties my wife’s friend told her about this man who had a pug that needed to find a home. The story, as I understand it, was that Hardy lived with a single man a few miles west of us. Apparently, some neighborhood kids thought it was good sport to repeatedly take Hardy from his fenced yard, down the street to their house, where he was thrown over their fence to face off with their pit bull. Hardy was overweight which only aggravated the damage done to his legs from the flights over the fence. Just like for us, the emotional damage would outlast the physical. It was late in the day that spring evening when we met Hardy for the first time. He was friendly, chubby, smelly and nervous. His owner didn’t want to give him up, but just didn’t see that he had a choice. He loved Hardy. I will never forget the moment we backed out of the driveway. Hardy was sitting on my lap, losing fur like crazy, and feeling something this side of terror. I looked at the man who began to cry as he spun around, walked into his house and closed the door. Sometimes life doesn’t give us good options. When we got home it was dark. We walked
44
Hardy
Hardy in a harness that would barely fit his cube of a body. His little legs were functional, but between the bad joints and the extra weight, the walks were short those first few weeks. That first night we took him upstairs with us for bed time. We discovered that he didn’t like to be picked up. Go figure. We made him a bed in the floor, but he liked to move around during the night. He would sleep on my wife’s side of the bed for a couple of hours and then move to my side of the bed. During the many nights that he was part of our family we would come to find great comfort in hearing his slow walk. We nicknamed him “chunka chunka”. That’s what his walk sounded like. It was one of those simple pleasures. Throughout the night I would reach over the side of the bed and feel Hardy’s soft coat. He had what’s called a double coat. His fur was softer than Egyptian cotton. When I would reach over and pet him in the middle of the night he would purr and moan. It became the source of great comfort for me. He was such a peaceful spirit. I miss that. Over time Hardy trimmed down. His legs worked much better even if he never had full mobility. Hardy became a joyful, loving and mostly trusting dog over time. At feeding time he would smile, bark and bounce on his front legs. He, like every pug I’ve ever met, loved to eat. He was joyful and brought joy into his world. Watching this “learning to trust” is a wonderful thing. What happens during this process is that we become persons worthy of trust. As Hardy learned to lay down some of his baggage, I learned to soften my heart. I have discovered that as long as we’re alive, this is a continuing process. There is no perfection of a person, or a pug, or anything on this planet. The object is simply learning to let go, learning to trust. As the years went by Hardy’s body began to fail in a thousand small ways, just like it
June 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
happens to us, if we’re lucky enough to live that long. At the same time he became a deeply peaceful being. I started to say dog, which he was, but the connotations we attach to that word don’t seem to paint the true picture. We say dog, we think “dumb animal”, inanimate object, which Hardy was not. It’s these connotations, these concepts of reality, that go unchallenged, that create the need for rescue. We do the same thing to groups of people. But that’s an argument for another day. Physical life is tenuous. We look at the world around us and those we love and see impermanence. Impermanence can be scary. And yet it is where we live. The religion that was named after the Buddha exists because of the issue of suffering. In a nut shell, life is unsatisfactory, full of suffering. We must decide what we will do about that, on the inside and on the out. The decisions we make will create or soothe suffering. Failing to make a decision, is a decision. It’s interesting, I think what I have observed is that many of our efforts to find pleasure have actually created suffering and our efforts to alleviate the suffering of others has alleviated the suffering in ourselves. The dreaded day eventually came. Hardy had a neurological thing and he was going fast. We rushed him to the emergency vet, but there was nothing that could be done. We said goodby. Our lives were changing again. Impermanence. The act of rescuing implies also being rescued, for we are products of what we have fed our minds and spirits. The kindness we show others is very much a kindness unto ourselves. We become from intention rather than by accident (especially as an adult). The responsibility rests in each of us for who we will be tomorrow. No one (no sentient being) exists in a vacuum. I rescue to make my world a better place, inside and out. God calls each of us to a different path. Right now mine is with animals.

Puppy Socialization: More Important Than You Think
By Linda Hofmann
P
uppies that lack exposure to different environments and new experiences during their first two to four months of life, can develop behavioral problems and disorders including fear and aggression. Just as psychologists believe there are critical periods in the development of the human personality, dogs also have these critical periods that shape behavior and personality.
Development Stages2 Puppies go through important periods of physical and social development. They learn social interactions, play and inhibiting their bite and aggression from their mother and litter mates. 1-13 Days Neonatal: Puppies can not see or hear. They rely on mother for warmth and food. 14-21 Days Transitional: Puppies’ brains become more mature. Eyes and ears begin to work. This is a critical period for socialization. What pups learn from mom and litter mates will affect their adulthood. 21-28 Days Identification: Puppies’ brain, ears and eyes are capable of sensory input. Exposure to all manners of noise (music, dishwasher, vacuum) must be introduced during the third week before fear behavior has developed. 28-35 Days Second Identification: Puppies need lots of new experiences within a stable environment. They need short periods of separation from litter mates to prevent later separation anxiety problems and this encourages human bonding. A lack of challenges and new experiences at this period will likely develop fearful anxious adults. 5-16 Weeks Socialization Period: Puppies need to explore the world around them to
develop full adult potential without behavior problems. Puppies left alone for long periods or constantly with human companions are both prone to developing separation anxiety as adults.
Critical Periods and Positive Outcomes The socialization period between three to twelve weeks is especially important because what a puppy learns during this time has life long effect on its personality and reaction to people and other animals. The optimal time for socialization is up to about twelve weeks of age.3 Puppies that are exposed to new and novel experiences will develop appropriate social skills. On the other hand, a lack of positive exposure to various environments and to novelty can be as damaging as bad experience. Fear imprinting occurs between eight to eleven weeks. During this time pup’s fear response will be stronger and more pronounced.
Positive Proactive Socialization During the socialization period, provide your pup with positive exposure to new objects, environments and other pups in a fun and positive way. Around seven to twelve weeks old enroll your pup in a good socialization class. These classes focus on positive exploration of novelty, problem solving and exposure to different puppies and play styles. (Example: Puppy Start Right Training4) Even if adult dogs are in the household, puppies need the opportunity to play with other puppies to develop normal canine communication skills. The risk of acquiring disease in young puppies is minimized through early vaccination, deworming and routine veterinary examinations. Both the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the
Behavior problems are the number one cause of relinquishment to shelters. An estimated two million of the four million relinquished are euthanized!1
American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) have made recommendations encouraging early experiences for puppies. Providing socialization at the critical period of up to twelve weeks in a safe environment where you know the health and vaccination status of other puppies is a wise choice. Avoid high traffic public areas such as dog parks and or festivals until your pup is fourteen weeks or older. Taking your seven to twelve week old puppy to a good puppy class may be the most important action a new puppy owner can do for their dogs’ behavioral well being. Puppy Socialization classes can help to develop and enhance the human bonding with your new puppy as well as providing a positive proactive socialization exposure that will give your puppy good social skills for life. About the Author: Linda Hofmann has owned Mt. Tabor Boarding & Grooming for 12 years. She is a Veterinary Technician and is being certified as a Puppy Start Right Instructor. Puppy Start Right Socialization classes will begin in July 2013 at Mt. Tabor Boarding & Grooming in Winston-Salem. Mt. Tabor Boarding & Grooming offers free puppy socialization time called “Puppy Yappy Hour” on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month from 10AM until 2PM. Planned Pethood:
Providing Low-Cost Care in the Triad By Tami Payne and Caitlyn Schaap
Tami Payne, Clinic Director, and rescued baby Finley.
S
across the country is the public’s lack of knowledge about just how great of an effect spaying and neutering their pets will have on animal shelter overcrowding. In the Guilford County Animal Shelter, the euthanasia rate is a staggering 62 percent. In counties where spaying and neutering pets is mandatory by law for all pet owners without a breeder’s license, euthanasia rates are significantly lower. Though education is an incredibly important facet of Planned Pethood’s mission, another large area of focus is changing local laws about spaying and neutering pets. Representatives from Planned Pethood, as well as other members of the animal wellness community, attend community meetings and meet with legislators to discuss the importance of introducing spay and neuter regulations. Says Tami Payne, Clinic Director of Planned Pethood, “I think we’ll get there eventually. It’s just a matter of everyone working together to educate people about the necessity of spay and neuter and how it reduces the euthanasia rates of animals.” Planned Pethood Spay and Neuter Clinic has been in operation since 2004 and works with programs in Rockingham County, Davidson County, Davie County, Rowan County and Randolph County. Last year alone, the clinic performed 9,202 surgeries and is already seeing an increase in surgeries this year. George Davis, Transport Driver and his faithful Planned Pethood works hard to companion Gabby. ituated just steps away from the Guilford County Animal Shelter, Planned Pethood Spay and Neuter Clinic is providing inexpensive spay and neuter services to pet owners in the Triad. Though the Planned Pethood Clinic is not owned and operated by the Humane Society, it is endorsed as a Humane Society Program because both entities share a common mission: to reduce euthanasia in animal shelters by starting at the source. Through spay and neuter services, Planned Pethood hopes to prevent unwanted litters of puppies and kittens from overcrowding animal shelters by preventing unplanned pet pregnancies. One female cat can produce up to eleven million kittens in the course of just ten to eleven years by producing female kittens that produce more female kittens and so on. It is facts and figures like these that Planned Pethood is trying to educate the public about. One of the main causes of high euthanasia rates in animal shelters
make their services easily accessible and affordable to anyone in need of spay and neuter services regardless of income. Though their main mission is spay and neuter services, Planned Pethood also offers low-cost wellness care on Fridays and Saturdays for pets in need of basic veterinary care. Packages run between $50 and $100 and include an exam, necessary shots, deworming and in some cases a heart worm or feline leukemia test and a microchip or feline leukemia vaccine. For pets that just need vaccines or other wellness testing, Planned Pethood also provides a walk in clinic from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Fridays where pet owners pay just a price per vaccine for initial shots or booster shots.
Planned Pethood also offers promotional pricing from time to time. In June, the clinic will be offering a “Did You Know?” special where spay and neuter for cats and dogs under six months of age will be just $20, for the first 100 to schedule. In August they will be hosting another special called “Primp Your Pit” where they will be providing $20 spay and neuter services for the first 150 Pit Bulls in the area to schedule.
