GRAND RE-OPENING

Back in the saddle from heartworm disease It has been two years since Cowboy Pip was diagnosed with feline heartworm disease during a cardiac ultrasound. He contracted the heartworms from an infected mosquito which injected heartworm larvae into his bloodstream. Because he only had one adult male heartworm, the feline heartworm test and chest X-rays could not detect his heartworm infection. Pip is all grown up now and continues with his monthly heartworm prevention even though he still lives indoors.

It only takes one mosquito bite to spread the disease. Just like dogs, cats should also stay on either topical or oral monthly heartworm prevention. For more information about feline heartworm disease, please contact us or visit our website. Our current promotions include Revolution® (buy 6, get 2 free or buy 9, get 3 free) and Heartgard® oral chewtabs. Also, the ticks and fleas are now emerging from winter dormancy. Please call us about our special flea and tick product promotions, too.

Becca,

an adorable brown tabby, born about February 2009. A petite charmer, weighing 7.5 lbs, with an amazing purr. Her cute little bobtail appears to be by way of an accident, rather than birth. A very affectionate lap cat, who loves people and is not shy of strangers. Becca has a playful side, however, if given the choice, she is just as happy curled up in your lap or next to you. She’s litter box trained and is not destructive. Becca dislikes other animals and needs Tailless Cat Rescue to be an only pet. She is not demanding and will do quite well in a quiet home with anyone wanting a gentle, relaxing lap kitty. She is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped, and is FeLV/FIV negative. For information about Becca visit www.taillesscatrescue.com or email taillesscatrescue@hotmail.com n

Bonnie. Hello! I’m Bonnie Basset and I’m in the market for a forever family of my very own! I’m between four and five years old, and my foster mama says I’m the sweetest little girl ever. I just love being around people, especially when they’re sitting on the sofa and I can cuddle right up next to them. I love playing with my Basset sister, but not too Carolina Basset wildly. I am house-trained, and can have Hound Rescue my bones and bag packed in no time flat. Call CBHR and ask for me, Bonnie! If you’d like to inquire about adopting Bonnie, please see our contact information below. For more information about Bonnie or another adoptable hound, visit our website at www.cbhr.com, or email rebecca.gering@cbhr.com. n

Charlie and Bailey are both being fostered at Dog Days. Charlie is a GREAT dog and is estimated to be around 8 or 9 years old. He is neutered, microchipped & fully house-trained. His favorite activity is playing Fetch & he is lovingly described as a “big goofball”. Charlie does great with kids, dogs & farm animals. Bailey was found as a stray and saved from an uncertain fate due to that sweet face. She came to the SPCA of the Triad scared and shy but she is really starting to flourish into the sweet, play- Charlie ful dog she was meant to be. Bailey is good with kids and dogs and is estimated to be about 1 year old. She is spayed and fully vaccinated. Both Charlie and Bailey come with a 20-day day care pass to Dog Days. Call

ON THE COVER: Sonny came to the SPCA over a year ago with his mother, “Cher”. As you can see by his ear tip, Sonny was from a feral community and was neutered. He began to get sick and the colony caregiver managed to remove him and his mother, and keep them at her home. Sonny is still pretty much a wild guy and petting is about all you can get from him. Of course, some cats like that turn into real “luv bugs” once in a home. He could settle down quite nicely in a permanent home, his mom turned into a great pet. He would probably be best as an indoor/outdoor cat or barn cat. For more information about Sonny, please call 336-375-3222 or go online at: www.triadspca.org.

Summertime,

…let’s help make the living easy

It’s almost summer and time to do fun stuff, let’s remember that bringing wild animals into a home environment should not be one of those things. Leave turtles, birds, snakes, wild rabbits, frogs, salamanders, newts in their own environment. They are not meant to be pets. They need the wild outdoors to help them thrive and grow. Observe them in their natural environment and learn from them. —Rabbits: Pet rabbits do not like the heat, and do not fare well outdoors. They have been bred to be domesticated and do much better in cooler temperatures. As the temperature gets past 75º their comfort zone is very diminished. If you must keep them outdoors, try to ensure that they have fans, plenty of fresh water and extreme shade. Indoors is even better. Rabbits make great pets since they can be litter box trained. They also do well in their kennels when you have something else to do, and do enjoy peace and quiet. —Pigs: If you have a pot belly pig that has been staying indoors, summer is not when you put them out. They can and do get sunburned. They enjoy warmth, but they really do need lots of shade and Pot belly pigs can and do get fresh water. One of the sunburned. They enjoy warmth, but they reasons that they wallow really do need lots of shade and water. in mud holes is to keep flies off themselves. You can use Avon Skin So Soft® original bath oils on their skin to help keep flies and other insects off them. They do need shelter and secure surroundings to prevent dogs and coyotes getting to them, they cannot defend themselves.

—Birds: You can put their cages on screened porches. It is best NOT to hang them out in trees etc. Other wild birds carry both diseases and parasites that can fatally affect your pet. Make sure that they cannot get out and that no neighbors’ kitties can get to them either. —Fish: Fish deserve veterinary care. If you have taken on the responsibility of a “pet” fish, then you should be willing to help them if they are sick, if they are having medical problems. Husbandry: the quality of the water, the aeration of the water, the type of water, the ph, the temperature, the type and amount of food that you feed, how many fish and the lighting necessary, are some of the issues that normally tend to cause illness and disease in fish. They are very easy to prevent. —Pocket Pets: Hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, guinea pigs, English hedgehogs and sugar gliders, should all have a yearly check up to ensure that teeth are not overgrowing, their hearts are not having issues, they are not developing cancer and their nutrition is up to date. They deserve the same care as dogs and cats. They are living creatures that should be cared for with the same consideration given to all pets. —Reptiles: Snakes, lizards, turtles, etc. also tend to have more problems due to husbandry. Once again, things that we do or do not do correctly, can cause environmental and health problems. By taking these pets to the veterinarian once per year, you can greatly improve their health and also the quality of their lives, as your veterinarian gives you information that will help you provide the best husbandry possible. Many people spend large amounts of monies on these animals, yet lose them due to improper care. Please contact us and we will gladly send you information. Most of these pets do not require vaccinations, therefore owners do not realize that there are diseases that they can and do get that are caused by us the humans. By taking them to your veterinarian once per year and having them checked out, you can help them live long, healthy happy lives and you can enjoy the company of your pet.

Animal Hospital of Walnut Cove has been seeing and helping exotic pets for over 20 years. Story

Celebrates!

Kayla

Their 20 th Anniversar y With great pleasure and many thanks to our loyal supporters, we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the SPCA of the Triad.

I

n 1994, a handful of animal lovers sat around my dining room table and drew up plans for “The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of the Triad, Inc.” (SPCA of the Triad). Since we all had many years of volunteer experience in animal rescue and had worked closely with two Guilford County Appointed Animal Cruelty Investigators, we were clear on our goals for our organization. v To be hands on with the animals v A safe place to house stray, abandoned and injured wild and domestic animals v The opportunity to re-home domestic animals into responsible, forever homes, and release wild animals back to their natural habitats v The opportunity to provide education on animal welfare and open a low cost spay/neuter clinic Mission and determination in place, we each put in $100 and hired an attorney to get the paperwork in place to establish the SPCA of the Triad as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Shortly thereafter we held our first public meeting in the basement of Temple Emanuel on Greene Street with a room full of people who shared our passion and goals. During the first year of operation, with the help of foster homes and volunteers, the SPCA rescued and adopted out over 100 animals and spayed/neutered over 300 animals.

12

By: Brenda Overman

For seven years, the SPCA of the Triad operated out of my home. Since both Marquerite Yates, and I were Certified Wildlife Rehabilitators by the State, and Marguerite by the Federal Government, most all species of baby and injured wildlife native to our area (except bears) were rehabilitated at my home. Emergency calls involved injured animals on the road, crawling under houses, in the woods, inside ditches, inside dog houses, anyplace you could imagine. We left carrying puppies, kittens, bunnies and opossums in our coat pockets back to safety and warmth. These were experiences of a lifetime! It was an honor and a privilege to nurse these animals back to health and see them adopted to forever homes or returned to the habitats where they were meant to live. Throughout the years, the SPCA has worked with many wonderful community leaders, citizens and companies on countless projects, including: v Dog houses for animals needing shelter. B. J. Barnes and the County Prison Farm built dog houses for animals. Home Depot gave us a discount on materials. Two Men and a Truck picked up the dog houses and delivered them. Chuck Tucker, a local builder, provided storage for the houses.

June 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

v First county low cost spay/neuter clinic With help from Kidd Lockard, Chuck Tucker and dedicated volunteers and supporters, we were able to spay/ neuter over 6,000 animals in the first year. Margueriate Yates, Tamra Dick and volunteers worked endless days and nights to get all the equipment set up, labeled and in working order. The Triad Spay/Neuter opened on October 1, 2001. Dr. Sarah Schug, who has since moved back to NY to open her own spay/neuter clinic, was our veterinarian, along with relief veterinarians coming in five days a week to do surgery. The SPCA spayed/neutered over 24,000 animals in the six years the clinic was open. Plus, we maintained our foster and adoption work. v A New Leash on Life. Frankie Heath, Amy Clear and I met with officials from Camp Burton Prison Camp with the idea to pair inmates with rescue dogs, allowing them to develop skills at handling dogs. Inmates were responsible for training the dogs and were able to show off their skills at a Graduation Ceremony every six weeks. This helped relieve some of the stress of day to day life in the prison system and, in turn, helped rescue dogs get adopted. I remember where I was standing when we received the call from the N. C.

Department of Corrections advising we could move forward with our plans. Frankie Health was Program Manager and Amy Clear, with Bark Busters, was the dog trainer. Currently I am on the Guilford County Animal Welfare Committee and am part of the Revisions of Guilford County Animal Ordinances, Chapter 5, which were revised October 21, 2010, (last revision was in January of 1995.) The new ordinances will enable Animal Control to have a “tool” to deal with proper housing for our animals, breeder issues, and unattended tethering, which has most recently been in the news and on social media. Today the SPCA is a limited admission shelter as regulated by the N. C. Department of Agriculture. Our facility is located at 3163 Hines Chapel Road in NE Greensboro. We thank David and Ellen Dick, for their generosity in leasing this land to us. We have adopted out over 7,000 spayed/ neutered animals into our community, have taken in animals regardless of breed, age or health conditions, and have raised funds to help with sometimes extraordinary and

ongoing medical bills. We sent one of our special trauma dogs, Phil, on a six-day, 4400 mile car journey, with a staff member and volunteer to Best Friends Sanctuary in Utah. Recently, Mickey, “everybody’s favorite dog” was adopted and now helps with therapy at Twin Lakes Retirement Center. He also rides around with his guardians in a golf cart. In 1992 the Animal Shelter Advisory Board attempted to put the brakes on pet overpopulation by introducing differential licensing in Guilford County. I was on the Animal Shelter Advisory Board at the time. This committee worked very long and hard hours, each person bringing information to the table to present differential licensing to the Commissioners. Differential licensing passed and what a victory; however, in one short week, this victory was sadly rescinded. Can you imagine how many animals would not have been born to suffer without homes in the past 22 years? Together, we still have work to do and must present a united front to make the needed differences. This one lesson taught me to not remain silent about what I believe in. To speak out, and take action for what is right for our human and animal friends.

While it is impossible to thank everyone who has ever helped the SPCA, each effort makes a difference. It is very hard to highlight all the events and accomplishments during the last 20 years. But, one of the proudest moments still has to be, when someone tells us that the animal they adopted has forever changed their life, or we have a child say they never knew anything could love them so much as an animal has done. Please help us continue to be that voice for the voiceless, the animals need all of us.

For the Animals,

Brenda, President Please note, The SPCA of the Triad receives no funds from the government or the ASPCA.

Zena is a 4 month old hound mix and she’s just the sweetest! She loves to play and is a great cuddle buddy! Zena does well with other pets and is working on house training. Zena will be about 60 pounds as an adult, and will be a moderate energy girl. She thinks you could be her best friend- what do you think? For information call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net. n

Finnis.

Outgoing and social, Finnis would make the perfect companion for someone who loves Pina Coladas and walks in the rain. Just kidding, cats hate rain! But he would be willing to do most anything else with you! Finnis is about a year old and has the adorable playful energy of a kitten, without the tendency to hang from your drapes or have litter box accidents! He’s the best of both worlds! For more information please call 336-438-2023 or send an email to hsac@netpath.net. n

Kittens, Kittens, Kittens.

Lady Bird.

We’re not sure what we really need to say about her? Did you see that face? Seriously, she is the CUTEST! Lady Bird is 2 months old, playful, and she has the cutest puppy antics. She gets along great with other animals and she is learning about crate-training. Since she is a German Shepherd mix, she will probably be a 70 pound adult dog. Adopt this cute fluff ball today! Call 336-438-2023 or email hsac@netpath.net for info. n

Aria.

Aside from her obvious beauty, this girl has some serious spunk. She’s independent and says “no thanks” to being picked up, but she does allow for lap time snuggles and bed time cuddles. Aria loves the company of other animals and expecially loves her doggy foster siblings. Aria is simply purrfect. For more information please call 336-438-2023 or send an email to hsac@netpath.net. n

Oh, yeah. It’s that time of year, again. Here at the HSAC, we have at least 20 babies who are all shouting “Pick me! Pick me!” Adorable and sweet, kittens are best adopted in pairs so they can let out their energy and then plop down for some cuddle snoozes. If you love to laugh, you’ll love to watch two kittens grow. Check out our website to see kitties of every temperament, age, and color! They’re all keepers!

ers needed a moment in the spotlight. Though we just mentioned how many kittens we have, this pose is far too sweet not to share. These guys are playful, litter-trained, great with other animals, and they love all people. Their current favorite hangout is on the back of the couch to bop you on the head or take a nap. No matter what they’re doing, you can’t help but say “Awwww!” Adopt these two boys!

Investigating Wet Floors

oming home from a long day and looking forward to spending time with our family and pets is one of the good things in life. Opening the door and stepping on a wet sloshy carpet full of urine is not one of those good things. Your first thought is that someone forgot to let the dog out. After a few minutes of the blame game, it is determined that yes the dog did recently go outside. So now we know that something is really wrong and it’s time to see our veterinarian. Inappropriate urination is a general term that veterinarians use to mean that dogs aren’t urinating where they should. There are many causes for this behavior. Infections, bladder stones, kidney disease and behavioral disorders are just a few. A urinalysis is the most helpful first test when trying to determine the cause. The urine concentration, pH, protein level, presence of white blood cells, and bacteria can be determined by this test. The results of the urinalysis will help point us to the diagnosis or at least the next best test to perform. In dogs, a bacterial bladder infection is the most common cause of inappropriate urination. This diagnosis can sometimes be based on the symptoms and a urinalysis. Most dogs respond well to antibiotics. A re-check urinalysis is always needed after the antibiotics are finished. This will help determine if the antibiotics solved the problem. If the urinalysis remains abnormal, a deeper investigation is required. There is usually an underlying problem with recurring or difficult to treat infections. Dogs can develop mineral and organic collections, called stones, in their bladder due to long standing infections, metabolic disorders and some breed related causes. X-rays to look for bladder stones are always a good idea. These stones can resemble sand or be as large as golf balls. Recurring infections are common when stones are present. Depending on the type and cause, stones are surgically removed, flushed out, dissolved with medications or treated with lithotripsy which uses shock waves to break up the stones. All of these procedures have their own limitations and complications. Surgical removal remains the most popular treatment. A culture and sensitivity is also a very helpful test. This procedure will test for the type of bacteria that is present and help determine what is the most appropriate antibiotic to use to get rid of the

infection. This test takes a few days to get complete results. Just as in people, we see bacterial resistance in pets too. This means that one type of antibiotic will not be able to eliminate infection, while a different class of antibiotics may work very well. Another commonly used test is an abdominal ultrasound. While x-rays will reveal most bladder stones, the inside lining of the bladder cannot be well observed. Bladder polyps and tumors may also cause dogs to urinate in the house. These pets will have frequent, sometimes painful urination that will also look red from blood. If a bladder polyp or tumor is suspected, a biopsy is needed. This can be obtained with surgery or a cytoscope, which is a tiny tube connected to a camera that is inserted up into the bladder. Once the biopsy results are known, decisions about further therapy such as surgery or chemotherapy can be determined. As in most medicine cases, blood work is always important in getting the correct diagnosis. There are many diseases that will cause dogs to drink too much water. This will usually lead to inappropriate urination. Some common disorders are diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease and endocrine problems such as Cushing’s disease. By pairing blood work with a urinalysis, these problems can be detected or at least suspected, leading to additional tests. Inappropriate urination is one of the more common cases that are presented to veterinarians. A urinalysis is the one most helpful test in determining the cause of the problem or at least what is the next logical step in figuring it out. Too many times, people may feel that their pet is just old or has a behavioral problem when actually there is a medical condition that can be easily cured. We are fortunate to have many tools to help us get your pet back to being healthy as soon as possible.

Okay - you want some prissy lap kitty - go look at another kitty profile ‘cuz that’s not me! I’m a brown tabby cat with some white. I was born in March of 2006 and my family had me declawed in front. You may have gotten a hint from my name that I might occasionally take a “swipe” at folks if they mess with me. Not to worry! Remember - no front claws! Anyway, I’m looking for a new home. Gimme a try. You’ll like me!! Call 768-7387 for more information about Swiper or you can visit www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption process. n

Sebastian and his brother Will are both long haired neutered male cats. Sebastian is solid white; Will is solid black. They were surrendered when their owner moved and could not take them with her. Sundance

and his buddy Butch were found at the Washington Dog Park, having been there for several days before AARF took them in. Both are very friendly, with no signs of aggression at all. They are pretty quick to warm up to strangers and love to run and play together. Sundance appears to be a Golden Retriever/Lab mix. If you think you may want to provide Sundance with a great inside foster or permanent home, contact AARF at info@aarfanimals.org and we will get back in touch with you. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within a one hour radius of Winston-Salem. n

Rocky.

is a beautiful 4 year old yellow Lab mix who is being re-homed due to family changes. She has a very sweet nature, loves small dogs, loves children and enjoys playing. She loves to ride in cars and enjoys being outside only when someone is out with her. Marley is housebroken and loves to cuddle on the couch, she’s a wonderful family dog.

Hi, my name is Rocky! I am a high energy, very sweet natured dog with lots of love to give. I love to play with other dogs and with toys. I am crate-trained, but it takes me a while to settle in since I don’t really like it. I am quite funny and have a great personality. I really like to run and a nice fenced in yard would allow me some run and play time, however, I really like snuggling up and watching TV with my person. I am not very fond of men and probably will not do well in a home with just men.

Meet Marley at an AARF adoption fair, held every Saturday from noon to 4pm at 311 Harvey St. in Winston-Salem. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within a one hour radius of Winston-Salem. n

Pebbles.

Hope

It will truly be a lucky family that wins this little girl. At 8 years of age the only family she has ever known is giving her up because they are moving. This must be truly heartbreaking for this little one, but we’re trying to make up for her lost love. Pebbles is a one of a kind sweetie. She is a great little lap dog and will be your shadow wherever you go. Pebbles has now been spayed and has a healthy outlook on life! This Pomeranian mix is a joy to have around.

is still hoping that her forever home is right around the corner. Meanwhile, she is happy being ARFP’s welcome committee at all of our adoption events. Hope is approaching a year and a half old. will soon be 2 and a half years old. This Boxer mix is such a great dog. With lots of training under his belt Gromit will make a great dog for a family that likes to exercise. He would make a great running or walking buddy for the runner in your family. Gromit loves to give kisses so be careful or you’ll get a sloppy lick in the face. Gromit is crate-trained and actually likes his crate. Because he still has lots of puppy in him he will need to be crated when you are at work. A special bonus is that Gromit’s crate does come with him!

is now 5 months old and still looking for her forever home. She has been spayed and is on go for her new home. Maintenance free and fancy free! Cammi is Miss Congeniality! She never meets a stranger and is happy to see all 4-legged and 2-legged animals! Cammie is a Boxer mix and is truly a team player.

Pearl is on the hunt for

Chai.

a special person to love. This gorgeous silver tabby warms up slowly, but your patience will pay off. Although Pearl does not seek constant attention, she loves to lie in the sun near her human companion and appreciates petting and an occasional belly rub. You can see the love in her brilliant green eyes. Pearl is a calm girl but also enjoys play time. She prefers to be your only kitty but would adapt to life with a dog. Pearl would do best with adults and teenagers. If you seek a beautiful cat who does not require lots of attention, Pearl may be the one. This kitty is up-to-date on vaccinations, has been spayed, and has a microchip.

If you are among those who like to talk to their pets, you might want to speak with Chai. He is happy to strike up a conversation. His main topic of conversation is himself! He will tell you what he wants and will tell you again if you don’t respond. Although Chai doesn’t like to be picked up, he enjoys snuggle time with his humans. He would prefer a home with older children and adults. An intelligent cat at 2 years old, Chai likes to outsmart toys designed to challenge feline minds. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, has a microchip, and has been neutered.

Jangles

Sage.

is one of several tuxedo cats currently available through FCAP. Like most tuxedos, Jangles is a friendly boy who seeks human contact. Tuxedo cats have a following among cat lovers. Some of the popular names for this type of cat include: Oreo, Panda, Zebra, Yinyang, Ritz, Boots, C.C. (Coffee & Cream), Eight Ball, Half & Half, Gala, and Moomoo. Jangles and his feline friends don’t mind if you change their names. Next time you are at PetSmart on Bridford Parkway in Greensboro, come say hello to Jangles. He is current on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered.

This handsome, long-haired tuxedo is about 3 years old, so he has experienced a bit of life. He is not easily startled and has a calm demeanor. Sage knows what he’s looking for in a new home. Though he is not a lap cat, Sage likes to follow his people around, much like a dog would. And if you’ve seen him at PetSmart, you know that he is the size of a small dog! Sage really loves his scratching post and is fond of his plush leopard-spotted bed. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered.

Cashew

Stash. An intro-

is a lap kitty whose purr can be activated by a single touch. He loves gentle belly rubs and will stand on his tiptoes to get the maximum rub when you stroke his back. At nearly 2 years old, this sweet boy loves to play and gets along with most other cats and feline-friendly dogs. Cashew has been adopted once, but one of the cats in that home just couldn’t accept him. So this beautiful boy is back at FCAP, seeking a loving home. Cashew is current on vaccinations, has been neutered, and has a microchip.

vert at heart, Stash is a bit on the shy side. He wants to get to know you before he makes a commitment. You can trust him with your secrets – he won’t tell a soul. And if you are patient and love him for long enough, you may earn this fine feline’s trust. This kitty is called a tuxedo, and Stash’s costume includes white boots. Tradition tells us that William Shakespeare owned a tuxedo cat, as did Beethoven and Sir Isaac Newton. Stash is current on vaccinations, neutered and microchipped.

Lacie

Carmel

is a sweet thirteen year old girl who was originally found as a stray wandering the streets of Greensboro. She had a horrible ear, eye, and bladder infection. Fortunately, our veterinarians said she is in excellent health for her age despite the infections. Her ear and eye infection are clearing up nicely. This girl has plenty of time and spunk left in her to make someone a wonderful companion. Thanks to the generous support of ma Cares to the Red Dog Farm Relief Fund, Lacie’s expenses have been covered and her adoption fee will be waived for the right home.

is a young, eight month old male guinea pig. He is extremely sweet and social. Carmel came to us because he was too much for his former owner. He would do great in just about any home. He loves to snuggle up in a soft fleece blanket. Carmel is still young and will need someone willing to spend some time with him to make sure that he continues to be a social butterfly, and who wouldn’t with that adorable face! We encourage everyone to do their research before adopting any pet to make sure that you are ready to love them forever.

Perry & Blossom came to Red Dog Farm after their owner could no longer keep them due to a move across country. They are very sweet birds and have been handled extensively. They enjoy each other’s company as most birds do. With some time and daily attention, they will still bond with their new owner. Both birds will let their foster mom pick them up, hold them, and are even starting to cuddle. They have had a fabulous diet and are in great shape. Due to their bond, we would love to see them go together. However, we will not adopt them out for breeding purposes.

originally came to us in mid 2009 as a skittish colt that was found when he and his mother were abandoned. He was in our foster network for two years and was originally trained by James Cooler. Marley came along beautifully and moved over to Stillwater Farm in late 2011 where he was used for lessons, drill team and trail riding. Marley has come back to us and is now in a foster home with two pony club riders, so he will get great continuing education. More updates to come once we get re-acquainted with one of our favorite horses!

was found wandering around a neighborhood in Greensboro. When neighbors investigated his appearance, they were told that his owners moved away and left him behind. Our veterinarian estimates him to be 1-2 years old so he is still a very young guy. Oscar will be updated on his vaccines, neutered, and microchipped if no owner is found. In the meantime, he is having fun exploring his current housing accommodations and he listens when told no. We are still getting to know him and will update you on his personality as we get to know him better.

Juliet’s House Rescue

Alvin was rescued from a high-kill shelter where his time was almost up. Everyone comments on how handsome and friendly he is. Alvin is about 2-1/2 years old and around 45 lbs. He’s a fence climber, so can not be left loose in a backyard. But he is so wonderful! He walks very well on a leash and is very friendly. Alvin seems to be housetrained, is fine with female dogs, but does not like cats. He is neutered and up-to-date on all shots. He’s such a good boy - he’ll even entertain himself when he plays with a toy. And he loves tummy rubs!

Birdie will be well suited for an active family who can give her lots of room to run. To adopt Birdie, please call Randolph County Animal Shelter at 336-683-8235 or visit us at www.rcaspets.org. n

Baxter

is more fun than bowling, more fun than bike riding, more fun than ice cream. Ok we took that too far but Alvin said if you wanted to compare him to ice cream he would help you eat it. He is a 1 year old brownish red Shepherd/Collie (?) mix male. He has a gentle personality and loves to take long, lazy walks. This sweet little guy will make a great family pet and would be good with children.

I know. I’m pleasingly plump, hefty, rotund, you get the picture, but you won’t have to worry about me jumping up on the furniture! Okay now that we have that out of the way, look at what a beautiful boy I am. I’m a 9 year old neutered white and gray male who is not very active except at the food bowl. I am sweet and loving, just need a lap to curl up in. I need someone who will help me exercise and maybe some yoga?

Jean

We named her in honor of our beautiful Rosie, the dog who helps us at adoption fairs. Rosie the cat understands that this is a great honor and has plans for living up to her name. First she needs a home and then she will coordinate her charity work with you.

is a 2 year old spayed brown tabby, just a spunky little girl who loves attention. Jean hears you. Just because she is missing some of her ear does not mean she’s not listening. She says the story about how she lost part of her ear is riveting but she will only tell her new family. Want to know Jean’s secret? Take her home and maybe you’ll find out.

Training Your Pet

Take Me Out to the Dog Park? by Jan Wilson, CPDT-KA Dog-Gone Fun

D

og Parks have become very popular in recent years and have popped up in several locations throughout the Triad. They are a great place for dog owners to congregate, create friendships and share dog tips. However, dog parks are not appropriate for all dogs. A dog that has not been exposed to a social situation can become very stressed and traumatized. Following some basic guidelines and closely observing your dog’s behavior can make this experience a positive one. 1) Go to the dog park during off-peak hours when fewer dog are present. This is especially beneficial if you have not visited a dog park previously and are not sure of your dog’s reaction. Let your dog get accustomed to the surroundings. Call him to you often for some great treats. Practice some basic commands, such as sit. 2) Bring some great treats with you. Treats that will get your dog’s attention when you need it! The treats should be small enough so your dog does not have to chew them or spit them on the ground. Always pop them in your dog’s mouth and never put them on the ground. A treat on the ground can cause a fight with other dogs. 3) When visiting at a busy time, don’t immediately enter the fenced area. Hang back and wait for your dog to settle a bit. When entering the fenced area, move away from the door as soon as you can and drop or remove your dog’s lead. Dog greetings can be stressful when you are the new kid. A tight lead can leave your dog feeling trapped and unable to greet other dogs properly. If possible, take a walk around the perimeter of the park, allowing your dog to relax. Remember this is his time, and it is important to make his transition with new friends stress-free. 4) Observe your dog’s behavior and act accordingly. If you feel the experience will not be a positive one for your dog, it may be best to find another activity for the day. If he hesitates and won’t enter the park, trust him. He may not be ready for a high energy situation. It

40

June 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

could be traumatizing for a shy dog. If it looks like your dog would have a blast, you will have a happy tired dog soon. 5) Notice the other dog’s behavior within the park. Are dog owners interacting with their dogs, or are they ignoring them to chat amongst themselves? When your dog finds some playmates, it is important to ensure the play is mutual. Dogs tumble and mouth each other frequently. They should be taking turns being on the top and neither dog should be the constant aggressor. A dog that is practicing bully behavior and frequently pinning others to the ground is not a popular playmate. It is important to call your dog out of a play situation often to insure it is a controlled situation. Dog’s play can become over excited easily if their play is not interrupted for a rest period. 6) Use toys with care. Not all dogs like to share toys and they can become very possessive. If there are toys in the park, pay extra close attention or if your dog does not like to share, it may not be a great play group. When your dog becomes tired… it is time to go. Like children, a tired dog can become cranky and their temper becomes much shorter. If possible, do not call your dog to you, but walk over to him and attach his lead. If you have been giving him breaks during his playtime, this will not alert him to anything but an additional treat and he will happily follow you from the park.

Spotlight on All Pets Considered

Follow Your Heart Then Fast Forward 22 Years How it all began. . . When All Pets Considered first opened its doors in August 1992, Owner, Kristine Godfrey had a vision. Driven by her love for people and their pets, she wanted to make a difference in the local community by offering high-quality pet products with up-close and personal customer service. Kristine poured her heart and soul into promoting adoptions from the local shelters and rescue organizations instead of the norm for 1992, which was to sell animals for profit. She was warned that this business plan would not work, but she proceeded on, following her heart, full-speed ahead. This was her dream and Kristine was bound and determined to make it work. Not only for herself and employees, but for the community, both two- and four-legged. She and the All Pets Considered staff have a huge, ginormous heart for the animals in our community and every All Pets Considered employee has been involved in animal rescue in one way or another.

worked there for five-plus years, some for 15 years. One trip to All Pets Considered, and you will notice the difference. You are greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere, and a knowledgeable staff that is eager to help their clientele. Employees continually participate in in-store training seminars hosted by pet food representatives and many have completed online nutrition training. Their desire to gain knowledge about the products they sell is quite impressive.

Through the years. . .

Today 2014. . .

With the help of All Pets Considered, cats and dogs alike have found their way into loving, permanent homes. You will find adoptable cats in the store on any given day. This was part of the goal. . .help people, help animals. Evidence of Kristine’s love for people is witnessed by the camaraderie and long-term service of her employees. She provides a place of employment for 30 employees, however, the employees are much more than “employees”. They are family, most having

The corner of Battleground Avenue and Cone Boulevard has a different look. . .the new “face” of All Pets Considered. The bright, cheerful mural on the front beckons you to come inside where you will find a larger retail area. The passion for people and their pets is still evident, maybe even more so, if possible. The staff is so excited to be a part of this growth spurt, which allows the store to carry more products and offer more services to their loyal clientele and to the community.

Celebrating Fathers

THAT WAS MY FATHER by James Colasanti, Jr.

I

miss the dandelion wine. Recollections of this -- the golden-colored liqueur served only on special occasions -- are centered around my father, one of the sources of my Italian heritage. Both of my parents came to America from Italy by boat in the 1920s. My father had been born in Rome, and my mother was from Graniti, Sicily, which was at the foot of Mount Etna. My fondest memories are of my childhood as an only child growing up in an Italian family in upstate New York. Tradition became and was a way of life for us. Every year in early summer, earthenware crocks with a wide dark brown band at the top and a lighter beige band at the bottom lined the perimeter of the back porch. When the days began to warm and the dandelions began to bloom, my mother, Mary, and her sister, my Aunt Tina, would go into the back fields and pick the dandelion flowers. The speckled blanket of golden-yellow flowers covered the untrodden landscape. My mother’s and my aunt’s hands would take on a bronze cast from the stains, a gift from the bushel upon bushel of flower pickings. But the handiwork of crafting this potent liqueur was all in the chemistry hands of my father, James Sr. The right amounts of sugars, both brown and white, the raisins, oranges, lemons, and everything secret or otherwise made this fermented liquid such a hit with friends and family, were all part of his mental recipe. Every trip passing through the porch to go out the back door became a citrus-filled extravaganza that stimulated the senses. Although great quantities of flowers, fruits and fructose went into the liqueur, only a few bottles were produced each year, making each one that much more special. Anticipation for this godly nectar was an endless vigil of waiting. That golden sweet taste has lingered long in the minds of all those lucky enough to have sampled its fragrant essence.

In addition to his wines, my father tended to his vegetable gardens with his lush large tomatoes and his hot peppers that would bring tears to your eyes. His flower gardens had a sea of tulips in every color of the rainbow, and his old world roses possessed a scent so strong they attracted every honeybee in the neighborhood. My father also had a special way with animals that would later be passed on to me. Perhaps only because there are so many of them, the dearest memory of my father remains that special day in the woods. It is the time that I can vividly remember being 12 years old and my father saying to me, “James (only my parents were allowed to call me James) come with me. I want to show you something.”

Moments such as these remind me that trust, loyalty, and love are the best things in life and the most lasting.

44

June 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

We started across the five-acre pasture of corn toward the edge of the woods that bordered it. We walked across the field with a purpose -- my father was on a mission to teach me something that would benefit me in later years, and I with the curiosity of an adolescent growing up in a world of mystery. The noonday sun, a sweltering blur through the haze of clouds, bathed the cornfield with its celestial rays. The silken tufts sprouting from each ear of corn and the dark green leaf blades of the stalks wafted at my hair as we traversed the densely planted rows to the edge of the woods. In his hands, my dad carried a small bundle of dried ears of corn. Watching him as we walked, I noticed that the beads of sweat on the back of his neck were gradually soaking into the back of his

shirt collar imparting a darkened hue to the rough-woven fabric. When we arrived at the forest’s edge, he said, “I want you to wait here for 20 minutes. At the end of that time, come into the clearing where all the big tree stumps are. I’ll be there waiting for you.” I sat under a tall old pine tree sucking on a long hay straw and waited patiently, very curious as to what my father had in mind. Even at midday the forest was dark with only scattered intermittent rays edging in through the tree leaves. My old Benrus ticked away the minutes and when the very last one was gone, I got up and made my way to the clearing. There, sitting on an old tree stump, was my father, surrounded by three wild deer, all of whom were eating the dried ears of corn out of his hands. The peace and serenity of the scene enveloped even the treetops, and to this day, remains an indelible imprint on my mind. The lessons I learned from that eventful day have inspired me in my daily life and my passion for rescuing stray dogs. Moments such as these remind me that trust, loyalty, and love are the best things in life and the most lasting. And to me, nothing is more important in life than those with whom we share it. All of us can remember a certain someone who could arouse a feeling or inspire an action -- a very special someone -- be it coach, mentor, friend or teacher. For me, that was my father.

Majesty.

This precious little 5 year old girl is as nice as they come. She is a beauty to see, has a lovely disposition, and is super happy and exuberant. She’s so glad to be inside that she can hardly contain herself in her desire to be made over. In fact, right now she has a tendency to jump up on a person, trying to get attention and affection. A little loving guidance and training will settle that down, I’m sure. Doberman Rescue Majesty loves the comforts of air conditionof the Triad ing and her dog bed, but also takes special delight in running on the thick grass. So if a sweet Dobergirl who is joyfully hungry for love, affection and creature comforts appeals to you, make an appointment to meet her once your application is approved. Whitney is a seven-month-old kitten with unusual tabby markings. You have to see her in person to appreciate them. She’s marbled, striped and dappled all at the same time. Whitney is a quiet, undemanding, loving cat who will be an excellent addition to your family. She’s bonded with her sisters Tina and Aretha and would take great comfort in being adopted with one of them. All are spayed, tested, current on vaccinations, microchipped, and come with a free sample of Advantage Multi on adoption. $75 or two kittens $125. For more photos see Sheets Pet Clinic on Petfinder.com. To meet Whitney (and her sisters!), please contact Sheets Pet Clinic at 336-852-8488 or petadoptions@sheetspetclinic.com. n

I’m not a believer in “fixing” your dog’s behavior, then bringing the end result back to you. Showing owners how to install the behavior cues, and how the training is done right from the start gives them the power to deal with future problems and turns my clients into dog trainers in their own right!
