ON THE COVER: Tiger He came to us a month ago with both front legs completely broken. Despite the pain he must have felt, this easy going guy was sweet as could be from the first moment we met him. He couldn’t walk, but he would push himself around on his hind legs and try to get close. Tiger went through surgery to have his legs fixed, is still recovering, but he’s trotting around on his new fancy legs and happy as can be! He loves everyone he meets, he’s gentle and playful with other dogs, and even gets along with cats! He loves giving hugs and being carried around, like the baby he is, since he’s only about a year old. After all he’s been through, he deserves a really good home. Let us know if you may be the deserving family he’s been waiting for! Call Humane Society of Alamance County at 336-438-2023 to meet him.

Vet’s Corner Jennifer Evans, DVM Brassfield Animal Hospital Dr. Jennifer Evans recently joined Brassfield Animal Hospital in May. She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Mississippi State University in 2011. A Greensboro native and Guilford College graduate, she is excited about returning to her hometown after practicing for six years in western North Carolina. Her primary interests include canine/ feline dentistry and dermatology. In her spare time, she enjoys outdoor rock climbing, running marathons, and chasing after her rambunctious toddler.

What’s the Skinny on Your Skinny Older Cat? A Glance at Feline Hyperthyroidism Regular visits to your veterinarian are essential to the health of any cat, but this becomes especially true of our older feline friends. Many vets will recommend at least annual or biannual lab work to be performed in cats older than 7-10 years of age. Kitties in this age group are at a much greater risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, kidney failure, and inflammatory bowel disease, all of which are often associated with weight loss. A very common yet often lessor known chronic disease that plagues older cats is hyperthyroidism, and it frequently is the cause of a dramatic decrease in a cat’s weight.

What is Hyperthyroidism? Hyperthyroidism is caused by a growth in the thyroid gland. These growths are typically benign, with only approximately less than 3-5% being a cancerous tumor. Normal thyroid glands produce inactive thyroid hormones commonly known as T4, which is then converted by body tissues into the active form called T3. This T3 affects the metabolism of every aspect of the body. During hyperthyroidism, the growths in the thyroid glands cause an overproduction in thyroid hormones, which ultimately causes the entire body’s metabolism to increase.

Signs of Hyperthyroidism Since alterations in thyroid hormones can affect almost every body system, there are many clinical signs associated with hyperthyroidism. The hallmark sign is weight loss in a cat despite a normal to increased appetite. Other symptoms that are frequently noted include increased thirst, restlessness, hyperactivity, vocalization, vomiting, diarrhea, and occasionally aggression. Also, your veterinarian may be able to feel one or both lobes of the thyroid gland during a physical exam, which he/she would not be able to do with a normal thyroid. Hyperthyroidism also

10

June 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

causes hypertension (high blood pressure) in the majority of cats diagnosed, which can secondarily cause blindness. Furthermore, hyperthyroidism is linked to certain cardiac abnormalities, therefore your veterinarian may discover a murmur when listening to your cat’s heart.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Hyperthyroidism Diagnosis of hyperthyroidism is fairly straight forward most of the time, and is typically discovered on routine lab work that includes a T4 level. Fortunately for cats and their owners, hyperthyroidism can often be successfully managed, especially if diagnosed early. There are four methods in which we manage hyperthyroid patients: 1) radiotherapy, 2) surgery, 3) oral medications, and 4) diet. Although it can sound scary, the safest and most effective treatment is radiotherapy. Hyperthyroid cats are injected with radioactive iodine just under the skin like a vaccine. This radioactive iodine has the ability to destroy the thyroid tumor without affecting the rest of the body. This method is great in that it is a non-surgical way to cure a cat of hyperthyroidism, and it is typically successful with just one injection. The downside is that this can be expensive, require the kitty to board for several days, and facilities that perform this procedure are limited. Surgical removal of the abnormal thyroid tissue is also a permanent method to cure cats with hyperthyroidism. This procedure has fallen out of favor compared with radiotherapy as it can often be risky to anesthetize untreated hyperthyroid cats, and the surgery itself can lead to many complications. This type of treatment is usually only used if the owner wants a permanent cure and radiotherapy is not available nearby. The most commonly utilized treatment for hyperthyroidism are oral medications. In the United States the drug methimazole is used most often. The medication is inexpensive (in the short term), highly effective, and side effects are generally uncommon. The main disadvantage to using methimazole is that it has to be given daily, often every 12 hours for the rest of the cat’s life. Lastly, there is diet from Hill’s Pet Nutrition called y/d that can be effective at treating hyperthyroidism. This method is used when daily administration of oral medications is not possible or if radiotherapy is not feasible. The problem with using a diet as a treatment option is that the cat cannot have any other form of food, including treats or even a hunted bird/rodent, or it will be ineffective. Also some cats may not find the diet palatable. The diagnosis of hyperthyroidism in your older cat can initially be quite overwhelming. Your veterinarian will be able to discuss the various treatment options available and help guide you to which treatment will be best for both you and your kitty. With appropriate therapy, a hyperthyroid cat can manage their disease very well and live out a normal life.

n 2001, the Humane Society of Alamance County (HSAC), launched its Foster and Rescue Program in an effort to help rescue homeless animals in Alamance County. At that point, the HSAC had already been in existence for thirty years and its Low Cost Spay and Neuter Program (created in 1988) had helped sterilize thousands of companion animals and reduce the amount of unwanted or unexpected litters in the area. The desire of our volunteers to do more prompted them to recruit a handful of foster families willing to open their private homes to animals in need and provide them with safety and care. Over the years, that “handful of fosters” has grown into a larger and dedicated team that rescues at-risk pets, not only from the community but from several county shelters as well. The number of animals we’re able to bring to safety is strictly dependent on the number of families who are ready and willing to foster them. To date, we have saved 2,537 animals through our Foster and Rescue Program!

million. Six to eight million of those dogs and cats will enter our country’s shelters every year, but sadly, only one in ten will be lucky enough to find a permanent home. There are simply far more animals than there are homes available. That is why foster programs within rescues and animal shelters themselves are so important to establish and maintain. When shelters run out of space or have animals that simply don’t fare as well as others in that type of stressful environment, they’re forced to consider euthanizing them to create space for the next influx of animals that are sure to come in on a daily basis. Puppies, kittens and their adult counterparts are all at risk of illness, depression and euthanasia while at the shelter. Rescuing them out of that environment and into a foster home not only saves their lives but also the life of the next dog or cat coming into the shelter that can now occupy the newly freed up space and have its own chance at adoption.

Every day, approximately 70,000 puppies and kittens are born in the United States, bringing the yearly total of births close to 30 million. Why Is Fostering Essential? Just as every person has their own distinct personality and characteristics, so do animals. They all have unique temperaments and some require a little more care and training than others. Whether it’s a laid back, twelve year old feline named Mocha,

whose family chose to surrender her instead of treating her non-life-threatening medical condition or a one year old, highly energetic mutt named Tiger who was found by Animal Control suffering from severely fractured front legs, the HSAC takes in felines and canines of all ages, breeds and backgrounds. Some join our program severely emaciated, having never been fed consistently or adequately while others come to us severely overweight and unable to walk a few feet before collapsing. Some have never worn a collar or walked on leash while others have never been taught to use a litter box. Some are happy to greet every stranger they encounter with an exuberant tail wag while others are absolutely terrified of everyone around them and prefer to hide. Some are content to take naps in a human’s lap immediately after meeting while some have never known a loving hand and are absolutely terrified of touch. Fostering requires a tremendous commitment. Families provide unconditional love and one-on-one, in-depth socialization. They nurse their foster pets back to health if they are ill and all too often, that includes dispensing daily medications and multiple trips to the vet. They prepare them in every way for the new life they will lead once a loving, compatible family has been found and that may take a handful of weeks for some, but months or years for others. Fostering takes a lot of heart and while it can certainly be exhausting, we all agree that it is truly one of the most rewarding things to ever experience. Nothing compares to the pride a foster feels when watching a physically or socially rehabilitated animal meet and greet its new family and settle into their forever home. It can be incredibly difficult and bittersweet to give them up, but realizing the difference made in their lives as they ride off into the sunset, happy and healthy, is what makes the separation easier and readies fosters to start the process all over again with the next dog or cat in need. The HSAC is committed to saving one animal at a time for that very reason.

I Want to Foster! How Do I Start? There are thousands of foster based programs in North Carolina in need of help! We highly encourage you to search for ones that are local to your area and contact their volunteer or foster coordinator to get started. The HSAC’s Foster and Rescue Program is always in need of more foster families! The organization covers the cost of all essential veterinary care which includes wellness exams, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention and, of course, any other special medical needs that may arise. We also provide all food and supplies such as collars and leashes, toys, litter, bedding, crates and more. If you believe you have the heart and home to offer to an animal desperately in need of both, please visit our website at www.hsaconline.org to learn more about our opportunities!

Vet’s Corner Tim Banker DVM, FAVD (Fellow of the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry) Owner of – Sedgefield Animal Hospital and Dental Center Dr. Banker (a.k.a “Dental Dude”) has been in general practice for over 43 years and has always seen the need for proper dental care for his patients. Today he is considered a pioneer in the field of Veterinary Dentistry. Dr. Banker is the owner of Sedgefield Animal Hospital and Dental Center and for the past 35 years he has been a referral dentist and seen patients from all over the Southern United States and Canada.

Good oral health is an important part of your pet’s overall health.

What is the Difference Between a “Teeth Cleaning” and a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment?

C

omprehensive Oral Health Assessment (or COHA) is not simply a “teeth cleaning.” For years veterinarians have used the term “dental,” but what does it really mean? Think about the visits you make to your own dentist’s office. The hygienist will take regular dental radiographs of your teeth and periodically do a Panorex to monitor all of your teeth, the jaw bone and sinuses. Each time you visit she/he will do a periodontal and dental examination and screen for oral cancer before scaling and polishing your teeth. Then the dentist will review all of the findings. If any problems exist, she/he will create a treatment plan and review the different treatment options to you. This is the exact same way we approach Veterinary Dentistry. We start with a COHA because a proper treatment and diagnosis cannot be completed without a thorough assessment. What is Included in a Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment?

During the COHA the following are evaluated and completed: 1. B ite Evaluation – The teeth are checked for proper alignment. Many “bad bites” can cause pain and discomfort due to trauma from an abnormal tooth causing trauma to the tooth itself or to the soft tissue/palate. 2. O ral Examination – The entire head and neck area along with all of the structures of the mouth (beyond the teeth & gums) are examined for any abnormalities. This includes oral cancer screening which is a very important part of the COHA. 3. Periodontal Examination – Periodontal disease is the most common infection in both man and animals. A periodontal exam is performed by closely inspecting the gums and probing carefully around each individual tooth, 42 in dogs and 30 in cats. The periodontal probe detects hidden areas of bone and tissue loss, inflammation and infection. 4. Dental Examination – All of the surfaces of the teeth are examined for fractures, wearing, defects, abnormalities and discoloration. Broken teeth and abscessed teeth can be extremely painful! 5. Dental Radiography – Dental radiographs are essential for a complete oral diagnosis. Consider that 60-70% of the tooth is hidden

14

below the gum line and cannot be evaluated without radiographs. Many dental conditions can only be found with radiographs. They are used as a diagnostic and screening tool. 6. A dditional Oral Diagnostic Tests – Sometimes tissue samples are collected or bacterial cultures taken to be sent out to an outside laboratory for further testing. After all the findings are recorded and charted, a treatment plan is created for each of the oral problems that are found. Sometimes they can be treated at this initial diagnostic visit; often follow-up procedures are needed at a later date. 7. Professional Dental Cleaning (Initial Periodontal Therapy) – During the visit all of the surfaces of the teeth are scaled and polished both above and below the gum line. This is done to remove all of the plaque and calculus on the teeth, which is the cause of the inflammation and infection in the gums. The tissues are rinsed with an oral disinfecting solution and then a periodontal sealant is applied to all of the surfaces of the teeth to slow down the accumulation of plaque. When Should My Pet See A Veterinary Dentist?

Just as your own primary care physician may feel the need to refer you to the care of a specialist from time to time, your general practitioner veterinarian may feel your pet needs the additional expertise of a veterinarian who has advanced dental training for certain conditions, such as root canal therapy, oral surgery or advanced periodon- Broken teeth and abscessed teeth can be extremely painful! tal treatment and diagnostics.

Seymour

is a 3 year old boy who has been waiting a long time for his new person to find him. He is an energetic guy who loves to play with toys and get attention from you at the same time. Seymour has made great progress learning his obedience skills and knows sit, down, stay and shake--all for a yummy treat! Meet this nice young man at Burlington Animal Services, 221 Stone Quarry Rd., Haw River or call 336-578-0343 for more information. Photo courtesy of Lois Dixon. n

Fabio asks, “Do you like my handsome profile pose?” This fabulous hunk of a boy is only 2 years old and came to us as a stray. Fabio enjoys running and playing hard for a short while, and then he’s ready to settle down. He would likely do best as an only dog with an active family that will walk or play with him everyday. Fabio has tested positive for heartworm, but that is easily treated. Please consider giving this guy a family to call his own. Meet him at Burlington Animal Services, 221 Stone Quarry Rd., Haw River or call 336-578-0343 for more information. Photo courtesy of Lois Dixon. n

King

says, “Well, howdy everyone!” This happy, goodnatured boy is nearly 2 years old and fancies himself to be a lap dog more than anything else. His last owner told us he is house-trained, good with kids and was an indoor pet. He had a brother, who has been adopted, and he would likely enjoy another sibling. If you’re looking for a great new sidekick, look no further. Come see King at Burlington Animal Services, 221 Stone Quarry Rd., Haw River or call 336-578-0343 for more information. n

Wrex

is a very handsome 2 year old Lab mix. He is a friendly boy who would love to be your new best friend. Wrex is young and would probably love some kids to watch over and play fetch with in a nice fenced yard. Start your summer with this fun, loving boy. Meet him at Burlington Animal Services, 221 Stone Quarry Rd., Haw River or call 336-578-0343 for more information. Photo courtesy of Lois Dixon. n

Mocha

is bundle of energy with a smile for everyone! This sweet, choco-licious girl is about 2 years old and she’s been waiting since February for her new special someone. Mocha loves the attention of people, but can be very picky about her canine friends. She knows the sit command and is working on other obedience skills. Mocha is ready to meet you and start the next chapter in her life, so come see her today at Burlington Animal Services, 221 Stone Quarry Rd., Haw River or call 336-578-0343 for more information. n

Newton is a quiet young man who is close to 2 years old. He is a little shy at first, but that does not stop him from purring like an absolute motorboat. He’s not fond of sudden moves and the loud noises here, but he will come up to sniff you and loves to be petted. Take him home today and be the one he opens up to! Meet him at Burlington Animal Services, 221 Stone Quarry Rd., Haw River or call 336-578-0343 for more information. n

Ranked by Open Table as having one of the top 100 restaurant views in America, the Chateau Restaurant offers casual fine dining in a rustically elegant setting. Terrace dining is available when weather permits, and the culinary team changes the menu seasonally to take advantage of the fresh produce grown on the estate by a local network of farmers. The current menu consists of grass fed beef, Virginia and North Carolina seafood, poultry, pork and dairy from nearby farms, and each course comes with a suggested wine pairing.

When the summer humidity becomes oppressive, Chateau Morrisette on the Blue Ridge of Floyd County, Virginia is just the ticket to beat the heat. While in the area, don’t miss the world famous Friday Night Jamboree at the Floyd Country Store, or stop by and sample some moonshine at Five Mile Mountain Distillery, craft beer at Buffalo Mountain Brewing, Cider at Foggy Ridge, or even mead at Blacksnake Meadery, all located within minutes of Chateau Morrisette. Hiking, rafting, and other outdoor adventures are available nearby. Lodging packages are available on the website and include mountain cabins, quaint bed and breakfast inns, hotels, and cottages. LOVING PET INN ADOPTIONS 336.393.0000 / www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org

Cali.

Ernie

Four pound, 8 year old Yorkie Cali has lived in two not so great places in her life. The first seven years she was used as a breeder girl and then she lived with a hoarder. She is new to life in the real world as a beloved pet but she is READY!! Cali is quiet and sweet. She is alert and interested in everything around her. She loves laps and likes to make new people friends. She is good with other dogs. She does need to be house-trained, of course. Adoption donation $175.

is a 4 year old, 8.6 pound Chihuahua whose owner was dying of cancer. He has been good with polite dogs here and we were told he was good with cats. He is a fairly easygoing guy and very sweet and cooperative. He led a sheltered life and is a little timid but he is friendly and quickly becomes snuggly and affectionate. He would really enjoy a doggie friend in his new home. He has no experience at all with children but should be fine with older, respectful ones. Adoption donation $175.

Sophie

Tater

is a 6 year old, 29 pound (needs to lose weight!!) Schnoodle whose owner was dying of cancer. She has been playful with the other dogs here and did live with a Chihuahua male in her prior home. She was originally rescued from a situation in which children were abusing her so absolutely no children in her new home, please. She can be wary of new people, especially men, but she is a sweet and loving girl, just afraid of certain people due to her history. She is much more self assured if she has a brave and friendly doggie friend to give her confidence. Please read her full listing at www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org. Adoption donation $200.

is a very nice 29 pound, 2 (?) year old girl with wrinkly skin, short legs, and a longer body who looks like what might happen if you mixed a Shar Pei and a Basset Hound. She came to us from a home that had 4 dogs and 15 cats living indoors with an elderly owner who was truly unable to care for them. She is a confident and cheerful girl and likes to be obedient. Tater definitely deserves the chance to live as your only beloved dog and be spoiled and adored for the first time in her life! Please see her full listing at www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org. Adoption donation $125.

Tyler.

Minnie

Gentle and super adorable Tyler was found as a stray. He is 13 pounds, about a year old and might be a Poodle/Bichon mix. He was horribly matted and had to be shaved. He is a timid, inexperienced little guy. However, he is very quickly learning that he adores attention and making new people friends. He is a cuddly, affectionate doll baby of a pup who bonds in a flash and wants to be with his loved ones all the time. He is great with other dogs and just learning to play with toys. He needs an owner experienced with shy or breeder dogs and a doggie friend in his new home. Adoption donation $200.

came to us when her owner died and left 4 dogs and 15 cats. She is a 7 year old Chihuahua or maybe Rat Terrier mix who arrived a whopping 30 pounds!! She is now down to 14 pounds, much better. She is a sweet girl whose legs are a little deformed so she is fine with just ambling around and enjoying the sunshine. She enjoys walks but doesn’t need to go far. She will be happy just hanging out with family much of the time. She would be fine as an only dog or in a multi dog or cat household but won’t want to play. Adoption donation $125.

Buddy

is 3 yrs old and weighs 8 lbs. He was diagnosed with Hemophilia A and his owners could not afford to treat him anymore so they turned him into a shelter in SC. CRT was asked to take Buddy due to his diagnosis. He is a very playful guy and enjoys going outside. Hemophilia A is a genetic disorder caused by a missing or defective factor VIII (a clotting protein). They are young females and will need someone to spend time with them continuing to socialize them. They have a nice foundation of enjoying time with their human companions. These girls would love to go together if at all possible. Guinea pigs are social creatures and enjoy the company of their family, both Guinea Pig and human.

a-boo! They come from a litter of 5, the “tree litter”! He and his kitten siblings are about 9 weeks old and were found living in a field in the cold and pouring rain. They are new to Red Dog Farm and are learning the ropes of being indoor kitties. He and his sibling are very friendly and socialized, they do well with other cats, dogs, and kids! All the kittens in this litter will be spayed and neutered in the next couple of weeks and will be available for adoption.

Pirates of the Carribbean litter is just a little sweetheart! This little guy is son to momma cat, Mary Ormand. They are now available for adoption but cannot go to their new homes until they are about 10 weeks old, once they are spayed and neutered, so just a few more weeks to go! All of the kittens in this litter are too sweet and social! They will make great indoor house kitties for any family.

is a very sweet 6 year old pot belly pig. She came from a loving home that took excellent care of her for her first 6 years. Unfortunately, Casey had to be surrendered to us after her family had to move out of state. Casey is at an ideal weight for a pot belly pig and is healthy. She had been an only pig until she arrived at her foster home and was introduced to two other pigs. Casey now happily shares a giant nest of straw with her new piggy friends. Casey loves a good scratching on her piggy ears and of course on her belly. If you can provide the proper home for this sweet girl, please fill out an application online at www.reddogfarm.com.

If you are interested in adopting one of them please fill out the application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Piggy Minaj was surrendered to Red Dog Farm through no fault of her own. Her owner realized that she needed more space to roam than they had available. This means this eight month old piggy is now in need of a new home that will provide her with a soft bed she can burrow in, frequent hugs and kisses and lots of attention. She even has her own harness, will travel. Piggy Minaj’s namesake, rapper Nicki Minaj has a popular song, “Right By My Side” and that’s where Piggy wants her new owner. Contact Red Dog Farm for more information about this sweet, friendly pig. n

Bella

has just come in to our program and we are just getting to know her. Bella has been passed around a few homes in the last year. One person took her in after hearing of a man that wanted to get rid of his horses by whatever means necessary and feared for Bella’s safety. This person was unable to feed her properly so another neighbor stepped in. This person helped Bella with her weight, got her feet trimmed and some basic vet care, then realized she was not capable of taking care of Bella properly. Bella is a petite mare around 5 years old that loves treats and only knows how to lead. She is not fearful of humans at all and would make a great project for the right person. Chris is an 8 year old being fostered through Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue. He’s is current on shots, neutered, and heartworm negative. Chris had been living outdoors recently and his coat shows evidence of this, but now that he’s on good food and enjoying indoor living, we expect him to return to the beautiful gray coat this breed is known for. Chris also came to us without neutering and had developed a tennis-ball sized tumor on one testicle. Needless to say, he’s feeling much better without that and is exTarheel Weimrescue pected to fully recover. Chris is a loving boy who shows such gratitude and kindness for any affection he can get. His photo shows this perfectly! Chris does fine with other dogs and older children, but hasn’t been cat tested and is a little “mouthy” for young children. Meet Misty, a lover of good food and great laps. She was found on the streets foraging for food and shelter. Her former family didn’t want her anymore, so Feline Friends came in to help! Misty is estimated to be 3-5 years old. She has tested positive for FIV, but that doesn’t mean that she can’t have a long and loving life as your constant companion. She gets along with her kitty foster family, but she would prefer to be an only cat. She would love to be the center of your world!!! Misty has had a hard few years, but she is now ready to be your fuzzy feline friend furever. Adoption fee is $75 or $125 for two as kittens do much better in pairs. Please email felinefriendsnc@gmail.com for an adoption application. n

Once he gave in to human touch he was an adorable, lovable and extremely affectionate kitty! The sweetest! Rusty is most happy being beside a person to love on him. He loves to be around other cats and he is very playful. Rusty is estimated to be about 8-9 months old. Adoption fee is $75 or $125 for two as kittens do much better in pairs. Cerena. A friend calls Cerena a pair of eyes with a cat attached! The vet thinks Cerena is between 8 and 12 years old. She is a stunning girl who likes to be brushed, and will need to be brushed once a week or so because of her long fluffy coat. She also loves to be petted, tolerates having her nails trimmed, and likes to play with a fishing pole toy. She loves to bring Tailless Cat Rescue you her toys. She really doesn’t like to be with other cats although she can get along with them. I’m told she once lived with a dog. She is already spayed, is up-to-date on vaccinations, has been wormed and treated for fleas. She’s microchipped, tested for FeLV/FIV and heartworm negative. Cerana also had a blood panel run to make sure she is healthy, along with a dental and teeth cleaning. For more information visit www.taillesscatrescue.com, or you can email taillesscatrescue@hotmail.com. n

Munchkin. I’m a gentle, talkative, long-haired tuxedo boy, about six years of age. I came to the FCAP Neuter Clinic with a severe flea allergy. Volunteers healed me simply with monthly flea meds. Neutered, vaccinated, and healthy when I receive a Feral Cat Assistance Program monthly dose of flea preventive medicine, I’m ready to curl up at your home. FeLV/FIV negative. Adoption fee is $50. Please contact feralcatassistance.org or 336-378-0878. n

Gemma was found in Bladen County lying in a ditch with a gunshot wound to her front leg. GSRA has restored her mobility with surgery and rehabilitation and now Gemma is all about her future. She is a big, strong girl and will need an experienced owner to show her the ropes. Gemma’s favorite thing to do is follow her human everywhere. She is house-trained, crate-trained, good on leash, rides well in the car, good with dogs and older kids, loves toys, and German Shepherd is intelligent and eager to please. Rescue & Adoptions As Gemma continues to heal, she would benefit from gentle walks or water therapy. Visit www.gsdrescue.org for more information. n

DAVIDSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER 336.357.0805 / www.co.davidson.nc.us/animalshelter/

Darrin.

Hey ya’ll, my name is Darrin and I am looking for a special furever home! I was surrendered to the shelter because my owners couldn’t afford to take care of me and my other 15 cat friends (also surrendered). I used to hide under the newspaper so my caretaker put a nice cardboard box for me to hide in. I was never mean, just scared. Plus it turns out I was already neutered and declawed! So they finally moved me to adoption but no one has adopted me yet. You see, I’m bashful and I like to hide, so people walk past me and don’t even realize I’m there! I’m looking for a quiet home with nice people to cuddle with, I swear I’ll be a good boy! My adoption fee is only $55 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Will you take me home with you? Please call 336-357-0805 for more information. n

Weezer

is a 2 year old boy who is the best of both worlds. He wants nothing more than to cuddle, make biscuits, and rub his head against you. Weezer loves attention, enjoys playing with toys, and engaging in the occasional game of cat and mouse. Although he tolerates other cats, he would prefer to be the only cat in the house. Weezer is neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. If you are interested in meeting Weezer or making him a part of your home, call the Davidson County Animal Shelter at 336-357-0805. His adoption fee is $50. n

Halo.

My bags are packed and I’m ready to go! I’m as cute as they come with my short little legs and my adorable underbite. After wandering the streets, I found myself at the shelter. I guess my owner didn’t think I was worth looking for because they didn’t come get me. Well, the nice shelter staff see something special in me and say that I’ll make someone a wonderful companion. I think so too! I like to go for walks, chase squirrels, and lounge around on the couch on rainy days. I’m 5 years old, already spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped. They did say I was positive for those nasty heartworms but the shelter has started me on medicine to get rid of those little buggers. My adoption fee is only $70. Please call the Davidson County Animal Shelter at 336-357-0805 for more information. n

Fluffy.

I’m not fat; I’m Fluffy! I’m over 17 pounds of mellow handsomeness. After 4-1/2 years, my owner surrendered me to the shelter. As hard as they try, this place is just not suitable for a large, dignified cat like myself. I’m used to the finer things in life; sunny windows, soft pillows, and only the freshest catnip will do. I need a human that understands that I am King of the Castle. Neutered, up-to-date on all of my vaccines, and microchipped, I am now conducting interviews for my new home. If you would like to apply or find out more information about me, please call my minions at the Davidson County Animal Shelter at 336-357-0805. My adoption fee is $55. n

Harley

has a big “To-Do” list for this summer and he’s hoping that someone can help him get some things checked off. #1) Find a home! #2) Go on a road trip. #3) Eat some ice cream. #4) Go swimming. #5) Have a picnic in the park. #6) Chase some squirrels. #7) Take a nap under a shade tree. Harley is now taking applications for anyone that can help him complete his list this summer. He is 3-4 years old, neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped. Harley is positive for heartworms but has already started treatment. His adoption fee is $70 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Please call 336-357-0805 to learn more about Harley. n

Lucy.

Hi there! My name is Lucy and I’ve been here at this doggone shelter for too long. Maybe it’s because I’m not a small fluffy dog. Or maybe it’s because I’m not a purebred dog. Well, I’m neither of those things... but I’m something even better! I’m 52 pounds of unique, lovable, mutt that’s around 3 years old. If you adopt me, you’re guaranteed to have a one-of-a-kind friend because there’s not another dog like me! Spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped... I’m ready to go! My adoption fee is only $25 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Please call 336-357-0805 for more information. n

Opie. I’m a mellow, muscular, orange boy, about four years of age. When I arrived at FCAP I had “pillow feet’’ and was underweight. Now I enjoy romping with other cats then relaxing to observe my kingdom. I like to gently pat you as you prepare my food or pet my head, simply to let you know . . . I’m calm, Feral Cat Assistance Program yet in charge. Neutered, vaccinated, and FeLV/FIVnegative, I’m ready to settle into your home. Adoption fee is $50. Please contact feralcatassistance.org or 336-378-0878. n

Training Your Pet

Making Life Easy and Fun with Dogs By Pat Muhammad, Carolina Dog Training Club

M

any of us had a dog while growing up or if not, have acquired a dog as an adult. It can be a blessing to have a loyal friend that listens and makes life enjoyable or a nightmare if you have an untrained, disobedient dog that tears up shoes and makes messes all over the house. Dog obedience classes can be a fun way for you and your dog to spend time together. Whether you get a puppy or an older dog, you can both learn how to co-exist without driving each other crazy. The basic commands learned in a dog obedience class can be applied to home life. You do not have to show your dog in obedience trials in order to take advantage of the basic commands. Your basic commands of sit, down, stay, come, stand, leave it, and off can be used everyday in normal living situations. Just like most people, dogs do better with rules and consistency. If you do not want your dog on the sofa, then be consistent and never let the dog on the sofa. Letting him on the sofa sometimes but not others sends a mixed message to your dog. This would also apply to letting him on your bed some nights and not other nights. Pick a place in the room such as a mat or crate and designate it as his place. Many dogs feel safer in their crate or their space anyway. Most dogs are food oriented so meal time may be a good time to start. Have your dog sit and stay when you put its food down. He should not be allowed to eat until you say that he can. This does not have to be a long stay, but should be done the same way each time, even if you are in a hurry. When playing fetch with your dog, tell him to “stay” until you are ready for him to fetch the toy, then “come” for him to bring the toy back to you. Here again, be consistent with what you expect him to do. Please remember to call your dog ONLY for good things such as playing fetch, meal time or treats. Always make a come or recall a

good experience or he might not want to come when it is really important, such as a car coming down the street. NEVER call your dog for things you know he dislikes such as a bath, ear cleaning or medicine. When one of these is necessary calmly put a leash on your dog and lead him to where you need him to be. When you are walking your dog and you come across another dog or a car is coming, have your dog sit and stay until the dog or car has passed so that your dog does not get hurt. Unfortunately, not all dogs are friendly with other dogs so approach with caution. It is also good for your dog to know the command “leave it”. If you are cooking and drop something, you want your dog to leave it alone so he will not get cut or pick up some food that is dangerous for him. Some dogs seem to love goose or cat poop, so the “leave it” command also works for this scenario. These are just a few examples of how to use obedience training in your everyday life. Not only will your life be made simpler, but you and your dog can enjoy each other more with a simple understanding of what is expected from both of you.

Rodney came back to us after being in a loving home for 4 years, enjoying life with his human and the family cat in Florida. Sadly, his beloved owner died in her sleep, and Rodney was found by her side, protecting her. Loving friends and rescue angels drove him back to DRT from Florida. He will be 9 years old in June and Doberman Rescue of the Triad has dilated cardiomyopathy, but he’s doing fine on his meds. He has some arthritis and the usual lumps and bumps from aging. He’s a terrific boy who still loves to play with the Jolly ball, is dog friendly (he’s so gentle that he plays with our special needs Dober), and longs for a loving home after living in one these past 4 years. Read more about Rodney online at www.doberman-rescue.com. Make an appointment to meet him after your application has been approved. n
