March Round Up, Roundup Help us raise funds for the SPCA of the Triad Capital Campaign. We’re making a chain of luck for our friends at the SPCA to help them grow their building and reach for the animals in our community.

Toby, Slick & Rocky

Just Need a Place to Call Home Toby belonged to an older couple who recently moved into an assisted living

facility. He’s 13 years old, but despite being a senior, this boy still has a lot of pep. Toby has been at the SPCA for about 2 weeks, and is now being fostered at Dog Days. He is sweet but extremely anxious, given his new living situation. He would probably do best in a quiet home with older parents. Although he doesn’t mind the other dogs here, he is used to being in a calmer environment.

Toby

Slick is anything but; this goofball has so much

personality and love packed into his little body. He is a playful, 1 year old Beagle/ English Bulldog mix. He quickly wins over the hearts of everyone he meets. He listens well and promises to bring a smile to your face. He is available for adoption through the SPCA of the Triad.

Slick Rocky

Rocky is a Boxer mix who is estimated to be between the ages of 3 and 4. Rocky is very smart and eager to learn; loves to go on walks and is a big sweetheart. Despite living at the SPCA of the Triad and looking for his forever family, this guy has such a great attitude and will make someone the perfect sidekick. Toby, Slick and Rocky are being fostered at Dog Days. Spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccines, each comes with a 20 day daycare pass to Dog Days. Drop by Dog Days and meet them today.

Teddi Says “Chow” to Arthritis Teddi, an 8-year-old Chow, was diagnosed in 2013 with a partial ACL tear, hip dysplasia and arthritis in her spine. Because of her pain, she could no longer finish her walks. After a diagnostic workup, Teddi qualified for Stem Cell Therapy. Using cutting edge on-site technology, Teddi’s abdominal fat was harvested, yielding over 3 trillion stem cells. Stem cells are the body’s own healing cells which transform and replace damaged or injured tissues. After receiving concentrated stem cell injections intravenously and in each affected joint, Teddi now enjoys her walks and playtime again. She is off all NSAIDS and pain medications. Over 900 million stem cells are cryo-banked for future use. Now Teddi feels so young that she tells everyone she is only 5.

Training Your Pet

Does Your Dog Have

CONFIDENCE? By Ashley Ferris, Pampered Paws Village

D

oes your dog or puppy have confidence? This is a big question for me. The more confidence your dog or puppy has, the easier it is to train. This is my opinion. Dogs with confidence love to please and want to learn. Dogs with low or no confidence take time to train. It is very important for the handler to be patient and to understand the dog. I do not like to push the dog into overcoming its nerves. I like to start small and work my way up. Dogs or puppies can be nervous about many different things. One dog could be afraid of strangers, while another is afraid of their kennel. Some of the behaviors you should look for are cowering, barking, submissive urination, tail held low or between rear legs, and fear biting. If your dog or puppy is showing any of these behaviors you may want to talk to a trainer and your veterinarian. When I’m working with a dog with low or no confidence I like to talk to Dr. Wesely at Stokesdale Veterinary Hospital. We will work together to figure out if anxiety medicine can help overcome some of the nerves or if training alone can help. This does not mean your dog will be on medicine forever. Our goal will be building confidence, then slowly working the dog off the medicine. In some cases the dog may still need it during thunderstorms, fireworks, or even when being boarded. Our main goal is to try a training regimen for everyday nervous problems. I believe there are ways to help your dog overcome nervous behaviors and build confidence. First: Basic Obedience training— every dog should be fluent in basic obedience in order to have a happy dog and a happy owner. Training can actually help increase the dog’s confidence. Using positive training to teach behaviors and rewarding with high value treats or toys will work the dog’s mind and help promote problem solving skills. Playing with your dog is another important bonding experience. Walking your dog as much as you can will not only burn some energy but will build the dog’s confidence. Try not to go to the same places all the time. Go to different parks and pet friendly locations. After some basic obedience training you may want to look into a sport for your dog, such as Agility, Flyball,

Nose Work, or Herding Groups. All of these really work their mind and help boost confidence. My favorite has to be Agility and Nose Work. Agility has them jumping over objects, going in and out of tunnels and walking over obstacles high off the ground. Agility is a great physical exercise to keep your dog focused. With Nose Work, dogs have been trained to find one specific scent. It is amazing to watch them work to find that one smell in the smallest, well hidden spot. Nose Work is a great mental exercise for dogs to help distract from their nervous behaviors. An example was a German Shepherd dog I was training who had very low confidence. He was a fear biter. So naturally, we started off with basic obedience training to build trust and confidence in the dog. I started very slowly so we didn’t exacerbate the problem. After some time and a lot of patience he was a brand new dog. Training requires patience and understanding with the dog. Having confidence in yourself is also important, as dogs will feed off our emotions as well. Training and behavior modification do not come easily or overnight. Your dog is a commitment and dogs with behavior problems require more time and energy in the beginning. However, once you start working to overcome these problems you will see a happier companion and have a much stronger connection with your dog. Work on keeping them engaged both physically and mentally and one will see great results. Don’t be afraid to talk to a trainer or your veterinarian about options. There is no such thing as a bad dog, some just take more time than others to become the perfect dog. About the author... Many animals are surrendered or picked up as strays and end up at our local shelters. Remember, public shelters must take in all animals, no matter what condition or age. Our shelters only have so much space and sadly this means too many healthy animals are euthanized. PLEASE do your part to prevent these needless deaths, spay/neuter all your pets and encourage friends and family members to do the same! Vet’s Corner Dr. Janet received her B.S. (1982), D.V.M. (1984) and M.S. in Pathology (1984) from Kansas State University. Upon graduating, she worked as a small animal intern at KSU College of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital until she and her family relocated to Raleigh, NC in 1984. From 1984 to 1988, she worked as a dermatology intern at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine and as a full-time associate veterinarian at Six Forks Animal Hospital in Raleigh. She later worked as a full-time associate veterinarian at Cobb Animal Clinic until she founded Adams Farm Animal Hospital P.A. in 1989. She has been a clinical investigator for multiple pharmaceutical trials and enjoys all aspects of clinical veterinary practice, although her primary interests are in dermatology, internal medicine and surgery. She is a member of AVMA, AAHA, AAFP, NCVMA, and GCVMA and volunteers with the Feral Cat Assistance Program. Her personal interests include traveling, spending time with her family (which includes two Jack Russell Terriers and a DSH cat) and Tar Heels Basketball. After 33 years in practice, she still looks forward to helping her patients and their families enjoy the human-animal bond and lead happy and healthy lives!

Janet J. Raczkowski D.V.M., M.S.

Food Allergy, Adverse Food Reactions and Dietary Trials An adverse, immunologic reaction to a normally harmless food protein is abnormal, and it is still unknown why some animals develop allergies or adverse reactions to food proteins while others do not. Cutaneous (chronic itching) and gastrointestinal symptoms (chronic and recurrent vomiting and/or diarrhea) are common symptoms associated with food adverse reactions (“FAR”). In some studies, 57% of documented feline cases and 20% to 40% of documented canine cases of chronic itching and/or GI symptoms have been attributed to “food allergies.” A reaction to a dietary allergen can be classified as a food allergy (an immune-mediated adverse reaction to a food antigen), adverse food reaction (an abnormal response to a dietary constituent), or food intolerance (food poisoning or an idiosyncratic or metabolic reaction to a food). In clinical practice, the term “food allergy” is commonly used to refer to food adverse reactions. In most cases, the classic symptoms that dogs and cats experience as a result of an immune-based reaction to dietary allergens start at a young age (less than six to nine months old) and tend to have a nonseasonal occurrence pattern. However, food allergies can develop at any time throughout an animal’s life, as the type of food allergy is directly connected to dietary habits and because an animal cannot become allergic to an item that he or she has never been exposed to before. Since most of our pets eat a variety of treats and food items and their diets are constantly changing, they can develop food adverse reactions at any age. Additionally, dietary allergies by their very definition are related to previous exposure to the allergen. As such, it is very important to remember that animals can develop an allergic reaction to a food that “they have always eaten before.” Cutaneous signs of food allergies can consist of itching around the face, ears, ventral abdomen, paws, axillary, inguinal and perianal regions. Sometimes the skin changes can be quite severe and can develop crusting, ulcerations and severe redness, mimicking immunemediated skin disease. Gastrointestinal symptoms can involve vomiting, diarrhea, increased frequency of bowel movements, straining to defecate, excessive “scooting” and/or intermittent blood or mucus in their stool. There is a genetic predisposition to food allergies, as some dog breeds (such as Retrievers and German Shepherds) are overrepresented. When diagnosing food allergies, a thorough examination of veterinary history and a diagnostic work up (if appropriate) is always warranted as with any other chronic conditions, as it is important to have ruled out other potential conditions before diagnosis. The symptoms of chronic itching can be related to environmental allergies (atopy) and there is also the possibility of cross-reactivity, meaning that many patients that have atopy can also suffer from

10

food adverse cutaneous reactions (prevalence is as high as 20%). Contact hypersensitivity, secondary bacterial (pyoderma) and yeast (Malasezzia) dermatitis or otitis (ear infections), parasitic hypersensitivities (like flea allergy), and parasites (mites) can also contribute to chronic skin disease. Intestinal parasites, infiltrative gastrointestinal disease, inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal cancer and many other GI conditions can cause chronic GI symptoms. Dietary trials are the gold standard for diagnosis: we feed them a diet that contains a single novel (never eaten before) protein and a single (preferably novel) carbohydrate for a minimum of 12 weeks. If improvement is noted, the food allergy or intolerance should be confirmed by challenging the pet with the original diet. Hydrolyzed protein diets that are commercially available by prescription only are also a great option. The basic idea behind hydrolyzed protein diets is that the protein allergen has been “hydrolyzed” or broken down to a molecular size that is so small that is considered non-allergenic (typically chicken or soy based). This is due to the fact that the majority (98%) of the food adverse reactions are due to protein allergens. Therefore, it is critical to note that a “grain-free” diet (if it contains the same protein your pet is currently eating or has been exposed to before) is not a true limited antigen diet! Additionally, there is a risk of cross contamination during the manufacturing and packaging of many of the over-the-counter commercially available diets, so please make sure that you read the fine print on the label. Dietary trials need to be discussed with your pet’s doctor. Your veterinarian should be familiar with your pet’s medical history and is trained in nutrition, which makes him or her a better source of information than “Dr. Google” or the retail sales representative at your local pet store. A thorough examination of veterinary history is extremely important for selection of your pet’s diet as well as proper feeding recommendations. Treats, chewable parasite preventatives, and supplements should also be discussed. In addition, it important to note that dietary trials cannot be conducted on a “free-roaming” pet since we need complete control of what they are eating. Everyone in the family must be committed to the trial since even if it is “just a little piece of chicken”, as this can invalidate their response to the dietary trial. A good analogy I relate to my clients is peanut allergies in people: you only need to eat one peanut to have a severe reaction! Finally, if you choose to cook for your pet, you must ensure that it is nutritionally balanced and provides adequate macro and micronutrients, which means this should only be done after an appropriate nutritional consultation. 5502 Adams Farm Lane, Greensboro

Cover Story

Animal Rescue & Foster Program:

Volunteerism By Sharon Gray, Executive Director

V

olunteerism: the act or practice of doing volunteer work in community service. Volunteering offers help to people in need, worthwhile causes, and the community, but the benefits can be even greater for you, the volunteer. Volunteering and helping others can help you reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. While it’s true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you’ll experience, volunteering doesn’t have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy day. Giving in even simple ways can help others and improve your health and happiness. Helping others kindles happiness. It fills a need, for both the receiver and the giver. According to studies, volunteering to help others doesn’t only feel good – it can also improve your mental health and help you live longer. There’s nothing more fulfilling than realizing how much of an impact you have made in your community by helping someone or something. When like-minded people get together, friendships are born. By giving just a few hours a week, lifetime friendships can be established. In the Animal Rescue & Foster Program (ARFP) we have shared births, deaths, marriages, divorces, and many emotional experiences that have bonded many of us for a lifetime. We have ARFP volunteers who started volunteering with the organization 25 years ago, took 10-15 years off to help raise grandchildren, and returned to volunteering with us. We have volunteers that have married, had children, and as soon as their children are old enough they return to volunteering with

ARFP again. I know every nonprofit feels that their volunteers are the best, however, ours really are pretty awesome. Every team that makes the Animal Rescue & Foster Program work is made up of volunteers with a passion for animals. They fill a large need for ARFP, however, the need they fill for our community of homeless animals is even larger. Seven days a week, volunteers are on call to care for the cats at our adoption center and return phone calls on our adoption and rescue lines. In 1999, ten ARFP volunteers went to Raleigh for Disaster Training with an organization called EARS or Emergency Animal Rescue Services based out of California. Little did we know what kind of bonding experience that we would receive by working side by side during natural disasters. Side by side, we have worked in rescue during two devastating disasters, Hurricane Floyd and Hurricane Katrina, in addition to assisting in other disasters by raising donations of money and food. These events were bonding experiences, like no other, for ARFP volunteers. ARFP volunteers are always willing to lend a hand to anyone in the community, including other rescue organizations. Our volunteers have many times worked side by side with volunteers from Loving Pet Inn Adoptions, Project Bark, Hart2Heart Rescue, Juliet’s House, and many others. Our volunteers see the big picture and understand why there is a need for each of these rescues. I have, on many occasions, witnessed our volunteers watching another rescue struggle to put up a tent at an event and the next thing I see is two rescues working together to get one tent up. ARFP volunteers inspire me and they inspire the community. When we post videos

Nicholas

or pictures of volunteers on social media it is always fun to see how many people recognize our volunteers and mention them by name. Many people have adopted from some of the volunteers pictured, or received help from one of them at our adoption center. The comradery that has been built between our volunteers and the community is monumental. We feel as if our community is our family. There is not a better feeling than when an adopting family drops in to let us know how much they appreciate one of our foster parents for all the time they spent with them when they delivered their new kitten or puppy. We love that so many people return to ARFP to adopt a second and even a third pet because their experience with our volunteers was so good. Our volunteers engage with the public and really try to find out how they can help. We have an amazing “kitty kleaning krew” that is our team of volunteers that scoop our kitty playroom at the adoption center twice a day. They leave each other notes if they notice a kitty sneezing or if one of the cats is a little lazier than normal. Without our volunteers, the Animal Rescue & Foster Program would not be. Suzanne makes sure our cans go down on recycling and trash day, Randy maintains our databases, and Nancy writes our thank you donor cards. Susan tags the donated purses, Judie and Debi screen our applications, and Joanne maintains our landscaping at the adoption center. Pam makes sure our pet yards are always locked up and ready for the next adoption day, Jenny sends out our volunteer packets, and Deb is always willing to foster a new kitten or a last minute rescued puppy. Stan is always willing to be our “honey do” man, Jessi will foster anything that we call her with no matter how full her house is, and Sharon is always willing to cuddle new puppies that are fearful. Happy leads our Pet Therapy team, Shari heads up Belk Days for ARFP, and Caitlin and Charles are always ready to help at Brewsfest. Sure, we disagree on things now and then, but on the whole our volunteers are family. Sometimes funny, sometimes weird, sometimes bizarre, but we are family. We would love for you to join our wonderfully funny, weird, and sometimes bizarre family of volunteers. To do so you can go to www.arfpnc.com and complete a volunteer form.

Michael Andress, DVM Gate City Animal Hospital

Dr. Andress is the co-owner of Gate City Animal Hospital in Greensboro, which was established in 1997. He received his B.S. in Microbiology from Clemson University, then went on to obtain his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia. His work has been published in several veterinary medicine journals and Dr. Andress has spoken at local and national veterinary conferences. His special interests are in surgery and internal medicine.

Encouraging New

ALLERGY RELIEF A newly approved treatment has promised to change how we treat canine allergies. Cytopoint is an injectable medication that is given to dogs every four to eight weeks for allergy control. One of the most common reasons that people seek veterinary care is to help alleviate their dog’s suffering from skin allergies. These dogs are incredibly itchy. They will lick their paws, scratch their ears and sides; leading to hair loss, red and inflamed skin, and painful sores. These patients can really be uncomfortable. Allergies are caused by the immune system’s overreaction to substances that would have limited effect on a normal dog. These substances include food, flea bites, pollens, and molds. To simplify things, allergies in dogs can be divided into food allergies, flea bite allergies and atopy or environmental allergies. It is important to partner with your veterinarian to help determine which of these conditions are affecting your dog. It is also critical to make sure that there is not an underlying bacterial, yeast, mange or even ringworm infection. If a food allergy is suspected, a food trial is begun by giving your dog food with ingredients that he or she has never had before. There can be drawbacks to just switching dog foods, so make sure to talk to your veterinarian. If fleas are contributing to allergies, a flea control program is started. Actually, all dogs should be on flea control. Up to forty percent of all dogs are sensitive to flea bites. There have been recent advances in flea medications that make flea control much easier. Atopic dermatitis is a condition in which the skin is itchy and inflamed due to exposure to small environmental particles, called

allergens. These allergens include plant pollens, molds and even house dust mites. Allergens trigger an inappropriate immune response in some dogs starting a cascade of events that result in compounds being released that cause intense itchiness at the skin level. Atopic dermatitis is a major cause of skin allergies in dogs. It can be seasonal or year round. We are generally unable to remove these allergens from our pet’s environment. The treatment of atopic dermatitis centers on controlling the body’s immune system. Prednisone (cortisone) has been the mainstay of treatment for decades. This can be acceptable for a short allergy flare up. Unfortunately, this medication does have side effects which can be life altering if it is used for long periods of time. Atopica and the more recently approved Apoquel are similar to prednisone in that they block part of the immune system’s inflammatory pathway. These medications are considered safer than long term prednisone use for treatment of allergies. There are some mild to moderate side effects that are possible. Both of these drugs have been very helpful in controlling symptoms in dogs that suffer from skin allergies. Skin allergy testing is also available for dogs. After the results are obtained, a vaccine is formulated which is usually administered by mouth. It may take months to see a response, but the vaccine makes the body less reactive to these allergens. This can be an effective tool in managing allergies. Cytopoint is an injectable antibody that targets one of the itch producing compounds in dogs. It is able to bind this itch compound, making it inactive so that the itch cycle is stopped. Recent data suggests that most dogs will respond favorably with limited side effects. Since this medication targets only a very specific part of the “itch” pathway, there is minimal impact on normal immune function. Cytopoint is unique in that there is no longer a need to give daily pills by mouth. This is an injection given in your veterinarian’s office. Veterinarians are impressed by the product’s low chance of side effects. Long term studies of Cytopoint are ongoing, but currently its future appears bright. Skin allergies are extremely common in dogs. Patients that have these symptoms are uncomfortable and need help. It is important to team up with your veterinarian to determine the best treatment for your dog. It is exciting that this new product may become a major player in controlling skin allergies in dogs.

Dolly. Hello, my name is Dolly and I am a female gray domestic short hair mix. My estimated date of birth is 07/15/2015. I am a special gal. When HSDC rescued me, the staff noticed I walked with a limp and took me to see a vet. Humane Society of Davie County The vet said I was limping from very old fractures that had already healed. I am still able to get around just fine and I am in no pain. I may have had a rocky past, but I am a sweet cat. I love it when people pet me. RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK www.reddogfarm.com

Jackson

Bella

came to Red Dog Farm when his owner could no longer care for him. He is a fabulous dog who would make a great pet for just about any household. He gets along fine with other dogs. However, he does tend to be a bit of a ladies’ man and prefers quieter kids. Jackson is housebroken, neutered and up-to-date on all of his vaccines.

has just come in to our program and we are just getting to know her. Bella has been passed around a few homes in the last year. One person took her in after hearing about a man that wanted to get rid of his horses by whatever means necessary and feared for Bella’s safety. This person was unable to feed her properly so another neighbor stepped in. This person helped Bella gain weight, got her feet trimmed and some basic vet care, then realized she was not capable of taking care of Bella properly. Bella is a petite mare around 5 years old that loves treats and only knows how to lead. She is not fearful of humans and will make a great project for the right person.

If you are interested in adopting him, please fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com! n

Karen

is a 6 month old kitten. This girl is just a doll. Her foster mom reports that she is an awesome kitty! Karen loves to play, like any typical kitten! She came to us from a college student that did not have time to care for her with her busy schedule. Now, she is with us to find her forever home! She is such a love. She will curl up right next to you or on you for snuggles and even lets you scratch her belly. She is getting spayed and will be ready for her new home very soon!

If you are interested in adopting this sweet girl please visit us online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Jake

is a kind and gentle 13 year old Saddlebred/Quarter Horse cross that stands approximately 15hh. He was surrendered by his owners that could no longer afford to care for him. They knew Jake had sight problems and believed he was moon blind but when Jake was examined by our vet it was determined he is totally blind. He is now happily living in a paddock with another horse as a companion. The adoption fee for Jake will be waived in hopes of helping him find the perfect home. It is very rewarding to know this horse and sense what a gentle creature he is. Don’t let his blindness keep you from opening your barn to him! If you would like to adopt Jake, please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n

Mist

is a 5 month old kitten. She and her sister, Sprinkle, came to us after their owner could not find them homes. Mist is a little more timid than her sister, Sprinkle, but loves to play. With a little time and a quiet home Mist will blossom with confidence. You can stop by and meet Mist and Sprinkle at All Pets Considered. n

She is heartworm negative and on monthly prevention, up-to-date on all vaccinations, de-wormed and on flea and tick preventative. She is a very sweet little girl weighing about 13 lbs. She loves people, kids and dogs, but has not been tested with cats yet. Hope is a very active little girl so a home Spay Stokes that understands the nature of a Jack Russell will be a must! She’ll need some patience with house-training as we believe she was probably an outside dog. If interested in adopting Hope, email us at: arsc2004@gmail.com or you may visit our website at: www.spaystokes.com. n

SPCA OF THE TRIAD 336.375.3222 / www.triadspca.org

Portia.

Meet Leigh.

Snowy white with beautiful green eyes, that is Portia! Portia is an 8.5 year old domestic short hair cat. She loves to be petted, brushed, and pampered like the beautiful snow princess that she is. Portia prefers to spend most of her daytime hours perched upon her throne (a chair in the front office with her cat bed on it). When she’s not getting her beauty rest in, she can be found at the top of her watch tower (a.k.a. the cat tree) looking out over all of her feline subjects. As she sleeps the days away, Portia dreams of living in her very own fur-ever castle with her very own human. Could you be Portia’s knight in shining armor and make all Portia’s dreams come true?

Someone found Leigh and 6 kittens a few days before Thanksgiving. At the time we did not have any space for a mom and kittens so we asked them to please keep them until after the holiday. We had not heard from them and thought we had lost out on the opportunity to take in Leigh and her babies. Right before Christmas, in comes the wonderful people who found them asking if we had room yet. We took them right in. Leigh was a young mother not much more than a year old herself. Most of the kittens have been adopted but Leigh is still waiting for someone to fall in love with her. She will sit on your lap for loving if you let her come to you.

Prince.

Sadie

A royal Prince! This black and white, year and a half year old majestic looking kitty had been an outdoor stray. The woman who found him was dedicated to finding this cat a home and began to call the SPCA on a regular basis until we finally said we had room for him. Prince is still a little shy but is starting to warm up and enjoy the inside life. Maybe you could be the person to help Prince adapt to a new way of life.

is a 3 year old Boxer Mix. She was found running along the side of the road with no collar or identification. It appeared like Sadie had puppies a couple of weeks prior to being found, so the rescuers hung fliers and canvassed the neighborhood to try to find the owner. With no luck, they brought her to us to find a new home for her. Sadie is a sweet, energetic dog who likes to play. She seems to have no problem with the other animals and all of the employees and volunteers that she comes in contact with. Sadie just wants to be given a chance at a new home with someone to love.

24

is a year and a half old Siberian Husky Mix. She was a stray found by our local shelter. Though microchipped, the owner could not be contacted so we were asked if we wanted to take Amora into our rescue. Amora is the sweetest dog ever! You can pick her up like a baby and she loves every minute of attention you can give her. Amora is heartworm positive but it can be treated and hopefully will not keep someone from falling in love and adopting her. Would you consider adopting Amora?

Amora

is an eleven month old Pit Mix. He was found tied on the side of the road near where our vice president works. Whoever left him there must have known that a kind SPCA worker would be going by to rescue him. Don’t let the tough look fool you! Juno is a love bug! Although he may look big and tough, Juno is a playful puppy inside and out. He would lick you like crazy if given the chance. Maybe Juno is the new puppy you have been looking for to come live in your home.

All vetting is up-to-date, they’re microchipped, spayed and neutered and on flea/tick and heartworm preventative.

Marble.

This little cutie is Marble! She is 11 weeks old. Sadly, poor Marble was found in a barn in Lexington after being abandoned by her mother. Then, Marble’s sibling was tragically killed by a dog, so she was left on her own. Thankfully she was rescued! Marble is very, very playful and loves other cats and kittens. She has not been exposed to dogs yet, but we do not think that will be a problem. Marble is fearless. Adoption fee is $75 or $125 for two, as kittens do much better in pairs. Please email felinefriendsnc@gmail.com for an adoption application. n

Winnie

had been living under a porch the first part of her life. She was found by good Samaritans who searched for several weeks for an owner but no one came forward. When Winnie started to get sick, they called Feline Friends for help. We are pleased to say that Winnie is healed and she is 100% beautiful! Check out her gorgeous gray boa around her neck. Winnie is about 6 months old and is so happy now to have a lap to lay on! She is very affectionate after she gets to know you. Winnie doesn’t like dogs, but she is great with other cats. She would love a home of her own spending the rest of her life as a pampered house kitty. Adoption fee is $75 or $125 for two as kittens do much better in pairs. Please email felinefriendsnc@gmail.com for an adoption application. n

Freckles is a hound mix around 2 years old and about 35 pounds. She can be very shy for the first day or so, then loves you so much and will bond very quickly. She has been good with other animals, Juliet’s House Rescue and seems to be house-trained. Get ready for some kisses from this sweet girl! Please contact Juliet’s House at rfjg2903@bellsouth.net for more information about Freckles. n

Meet Grady!

He is a 3 month old Schnauzer mix, weighing in at approximately 15 lbs. Grady is very sweet and loves people! He also loves playing with the other dogs in his home. Grady is very submissive by nature and would do well with someone who can be patient with him and who can work to build his confidence.

Please read more about Grady on our website at www.lovethemutt.org. n

Joey is a very spunky, happy and social little 13 lb. boy. He wound up in an animal shelter when his family moved and left him. We don’t know how long he was alone, but that is all behind him now. Joey has the Hart-2-Heart Rescue personality of a Pekingese and Pug…he LOVES food, barks at you if you are not preparing his meals fast enough and he is curious, affectionate, self-confident, determined and a wee bit stubborn. If you have ever lived with a Peke or a Pug, Joey will have a very familiar feel. We don’t know his age, but we do know he’s darling and will make you laugh and smile. Joey is neutered, current on shots, on heartworm prevention and had a teeth cleaning. Contact Hart-2-Heart Rescue if you can provide a loving and fun home for a sweet boy in need. Lola is a 7 year old, lovable and rambunctious Weimaraner. Lola is doing wonderfully in her foster home and has adjusted well to her new life. We don’t know much about Lola’s history but it is believed that she’s suffered an FCE (Fibrocartilaginous Embolic Myelopathy) at some point in life. This does not cause her pain but she does sometimes drag her foot, causing it to scrape. She does well despite this and loves to go on daily walks. Her foster mom puts a little bootie on her to protect her foot. Tarheel Weimrescue Lola would do best in a home with no children or small critters (cats, etc.), but gets along well with adults and other dogs. If interested in this girl, please check her out at www.tarheelweimrescue.org or check out a note from her foster mom on our Facebook page. n

DAVIDSON COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER 336.357.0805 / www.co.davidson.nc.us/animalshelter/

Martini is almost 2 years old and now she finds herself looking for a new home after her previous owner left her at the shelter. The shelter environment is very scary for her so she tends to find a hiding place in the cat room. Martini is a friendly girl that enjoys her back scratched and will give head bumps in return. Her adoption fee is $30 and includes her spay, vaccinations, and microchip. She is negative for FELV and FIV and she is waiting to meet you at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. 336-357-0805 for more information. n

Artemis will steal your heart with his big golden yellow eyes. He is 5-6 years old, neutered, up-todate on all of his vaccines, and microchipped. Artemis gets along with other cats and is quite content to sleep the day away perched high in the cat tower. This handsome kitty would love nothing more than to watch the flowers bloom this spring from a sunny window. Artemis is a low maintenance cat; keep his good bowl full, give him some head scratches and a warm place to cuddle and he is a happy fellow. His adoption fee is $50 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Please call 336-357-0805 for more information. n

Bailey's

Bobbie Cat

is a 6 year old bobtail that was surrendered to the shelter after the death of her owner. She was a little scared and confused at first but now is adapting to the shelter environment and learning how to get along with the other cats. Bobbie Cat is a quiet, loving kitty that misses the comforts of having a home and a person to love her. She is spayed, up-to-date on all of her vaccines, and microchipped. Her adoption fee is $55.00 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Please call 336-357-0805 for more information. n

Tyson

is a young Boxer mix that really wants to be a good dog; but no one has shown him how to yet. Tyson isn’t a year old yet so he can be energetic, full of mischief, and a little heard headed, but under all that is a loved, cheerful, playful, and intelligent dog that just wants a chance at a forever home. Tyson would prefer to be king of the castle when it comes to other pets so a home where he can be the only fur-child is ideal. It’s hard for us who care for Tyson to see him getting passed over continuously. You can meet Tyson at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. His adoption fee is $40.00 and includes his neuter, vaccinations, and microchip. Tyson is heartworm negative and on monthly prevention. Please call the Davidson County Animal Shelter at 336-357-0805 for more information. n

Jax,

life story doesn’t start out with the fairy tale beginning that all dogs deserve. She came to the shelter with a crooked front leg and a large scar on her back from a burn injury. Neither of these eccentricities seem to bother her but just add to her uniqueness. Bailey is a 2 year old hound mix who loves life and just about everyone she meets. She is an affectionate girl and certainly deserves a great home where she will be well cared for and loved.

On warm sunny days, you can find Jax lounging in the sun, dreaming of finding a family of his very own. Jax is a 3 year old shepherd mix. Training Your Pet

A Gift of the Heart: Pet CPR & First Aid

S

By: Hayley M. Keyes

ummer months are around the corner and April is Pet First Aid Awareness Month. Now is the time to go to a Pet CPR and First Aid Class. You and your pet will be spending more time outside and injuries from accidental falls, bites from unwanted critters and other medical situations are sure to happen. Pets are wonderful, they give us joy and laughter, and with so many pets being adopted, it’s imperative that people realize the importance of proper care and management of these bundles of joy. With rising veterinarian costs, it is economically prudent too. First you need a First Aid Kit. You should have one close at hand, wherever you spend the most time with your pet; home, car, camping or even if you hike. Listed are some items you should have: Digital Thermometer

Rubbing Alcohol

Baby Aspirin

Antiseptic wipes

Benadryl

Disposable Gloves

Gauze Pads & Rolls

Antibiotic Ointment

Syringe

Adhesive Tape & Bandage Scissors

Wound Seal (for Bleeding)

Petroleum Jelly or KY Jelly

Eye Wash

Glucose Paste or Nutra Cal (for low blood sugar)

Hydrogen Peroxide

In the First Aid Kit have emergency numbers for your vet, secondary vet, after hours vet, poison control (you’ll need a charge card), and a good friend that can help you. Program directions and phone numbers in your phone. ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) is a good source for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. (888) 426-4435. Now that you have a First Aid Kit, you need to learn about your pet’s vital signs. Pets rarely show signs of becoming ill, until its right upon us. Learning how to check his vital signs while he is healthy will come in handy when he is sick. The normal temperature in cats and dogs is 100.5° – 102.5°. When your pet’s temperature falls below 99° or is above 104°- you need to be heading to the vet. It’s a myth that you can tell your dog’s temperature by checking out his nose; a wet nose doesn’t mean all is fine and a dry nose doesn’t mean he’s got a fever. The only way to know for certain is to take his temperature. When taking his temperature have someone hold his head, use a digital thermometer, put some lubricant on and slide into the anus. Don’t use a mercury thermometer, which may break inside your dog’s body, causing serious harm, or a digital ear thermometer which could give an incorrect reading.

When we’re hot and flushed, our face color changes. Dogs show this change on their gums and eye mucous membranes. Take a mental picture of your dog’s gums, tongue, and eye tissue color, they should be bubble gum pink and moist. Capillary Refill Time is a simple look at your pet’s health, focusing on the color of his gums. When gum color changes, so does his health. Pull back your pet’s upper lip and find the gum line above their teeth. Gently press with your finger or thumb on the gum and release, the gum should turn white. The pink color of the gum should return within two seconds. If your pet has black gums, it is difficult to perform this test, but you can look at the color of the eye tissue. Long CRT times are often due to a decrease in your pet’s blood flow. The two most common causes for this are dehydration and shock. Don’t forget it’s insect time – so look for those yellow jacket nests in the yard! Spiders and bees can cause allergic reactions – so check for swollen faces or eyes and immediately give Benadryl. Always consult with your veterinarian for dosage. Benadryl can counteract the swelling in 30 minutes to one hour, but if swelling does not decrease go to the vet. Be prepared… Look around your house – what would a two or three year old child decide to get into? Is there a plant, medication, type of food, electric cord to chew, or a toy that could easily be swallowed or choked on? A First Aid and CPR Class teaches you how to handle and manage medical emergencies, but most importantly it teaches you the signs of an animal in distress. Understanding the signs of an injured or suffering pet and giving him the immediate care needed, can save hundreds of dollars in vet bills and could save a pet’s life. This is the greatest gift of love you could ever give yourself, a friend, and a pet. Come join one of our classes!!

female Labrador who was surrendered to a local shelter. She was very frightened in the shelter environment but quickly came out of her shell in foster care. Toyo requires a home that will give her a bit of time to warm up, but once she does she is loyal girl who only wants to be with her people. Toyo will be great with one other dog or as a single pup, but becomes over whelmed in multi-dog house holds. She does not do well with cats. Chance,

Foxy,

ID# 2342, is a loving, loyal boy who snuggles up close and folds his paws around you to give you a hug. He has the cutest doggy mannerisms that will make you laugh out loud. Chance is usually by your side or by his best friend Foxy’s side, waiting to see what’s next. He’s been working on commands and is eager to learn new tricks! Chance does not mind vet visits, car rides or baths! He’s an explorer and would love an outdoorsy forever home, but as long as you have enough love and arms to go around him, he will love you forever. Chance is heartworm positive but is currently receiving treatment and is expected to fully recover. He and Foxy are a bonded pair and would love a home together!

ID# 2343, is the sweetest little girl! Those ears perk up, that tail wags and you know she’s a happy camper. Not high maintenance at all and just mild-mannered enough, she loves snuggling and coming up to give kisses. She likes her rest and relaxation, but will head outdoors to explore for a bit also. She comes back in for playtime inside with her human and animal friends, especially with her buddy Chance, whom she is bonded to. Foxy is obedient and has begun working on tricks. This pair has been through quite a bit but has made great strides forward. They will make wonderful companions for any forever family!

Casper, ID# 2486. Boo! I’ve

Patsy,

got a bit of unfinished business to discuss. I once lived with a wonderful family who loved me and took great care of me, but the littlest family member started sneezing and coughing every time I appeared. Though difficult, we decided it was best for me to find a new home to haunt and that is where you come in! I’m five years old, neutered and I love sneaking up on people and receiving attention from adults and children alike. I’m perfectly content to sit in a comfortable lap but prefer not to be picked up, I’m a free spirit. I can be a bit shy and fearful of loud noises but promise to come out of my shell once comfortable in my new home. I’m a talker with a big, rolling purr...

ID# 2497. Hey there! I’m Patsy and I sure do love people! I’m a young adult with a heart of gold and a smile that will knock your socks off! I love lounging with my people on a comfortable couch after a long day of play but I also love exploring the great outdoors, hiking and schmoozing with the people I meet along the way. I do need to work a bit on my leash manners and I’m not particularly fond of other dogs without proper introductions, but I’m otherwise a sweet girl with a great disposition who’s ready to find her forever home! Are you the home for me?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND SUPPORT AS NORTHWOOD ANIMAL HOSPITAL UNDERGOES THIS EXCITING VENTURE! Dear Clients, Family, Staff and Community, Our goal at Northwood Animal Hospital is to provide our patients quality veterinary care that best enables our pets to live a happy, healthy, and pain free life. We strive to reach this goal while also providing excellent customer service for our animal and human clients. We will soon break ground on our newest expansion and improvement project. This project will include upgraded facilities and services, including expanded examination and treatment areas, that we feel will better support the knowledge and expertise of our staff in treating our pet patients. These improvements represent one part of our continuing mission to provide the veterinary excellence that the residents and pets of High Point and surrounding communities deserve! We anticipate very little inconvenience to our clients resulting from this renovation. We will continue our regular business hours and will continue to offer all services including appointments, surgery, emergency care, boarding and bathing. Our dog park will remain open as well. Updates, as well as notices of any inconvenience to our clients resulting from this project, will be announced on our Facebook page, the NAH website, our phone system and by direct email to those clients most affected. We advise all of our clients to check these resources frequently over the next several months while this expansion is taking place. We thank all of you for trusting us with the care and treatment of your pets over the past years and for allowing us to continue the legacy of excellence here at Northwood Animal Hospital. We appreciate your continued confidence in us as we make enhancements to the hospital. If you have any questions or concerns about this renovation, please feel free to call our business manager anytime. 336.887.2606
