Put a spring back in your aging pet’s step Did you know that a 10 year-old cat is comparable to a 56 year-old human and a 10 year-old German Shepherd is comparable to a 78 year-old human? Just like people, older pets suffer from diseases such as glaucoma, arthritis, heart disease and organ dysfunction. Has your aging pet lost the spring in its step? Our Silver and Gold Senior Care Packages screen

your pet for common geriatric diseases so we can treat them early and more effectively. Services include screening ECG, age-appropriate blood screening, eye pressure check for glaucoma, radiographs and blood pressure evaluation. FROM THE EDITORS

O

ne of our long-time supporters, The Treasure House, is moving to a new downtown Burlington location the first week in May. If you love shopping for antiques and collectibles, consignment furniture and home décor, plus much more, then you’ll want to visit them at their new location at 346 S. Worth Street. You’ll discover unique treasures that can’t be found anywhere else in the Triad. Our cover story this month, from the Guilford County Animal Shelter, strikes a raw nerve. Too many times our citizens drop off their cute kittens, puppies and adult animals with the misconception that they will live at the shelter until being adopted into a wonderful home. This, unfortunately, is not always the case. Our shelter takes in unwanted animals from the public, abandoned and/or abused animals, sick ones, vicious ones, in short, they are required as a public shelter to not refuse any animal. If you look at the numbers and the condition of some of those taken in, you realize the massive efforts required to reach the goal of finding homes for all those animals is impossible! But the shelter staff strive to prevent the heartbreaking process of euthanizing healthy animals. Keeping healthy animals out of our shelter should be everyone’s goal. No we can’t save them all, some are too sick or too injured, but as a community, we should take the necessary steps to prevent euthanization of healthy animals.

We the public and tax payers can do something to stop this vicious cycle. First, we can see that legislation gets passed requiring the spaying/ Deb Printup Jennifer Frazier neutering of pets and enforcing stronger punishment for neglect and cruelty cases. Second, we as responsible individuals, can help prevent much misery by spaying and neutering our own pets. Third, we can get involved with helping the shelters and local rescues. If you cannot face the environment at the shelter, contact them. There are many ways we all can be a part of making this a better community. Socializing homeless animals goes a long way in helping them to become good candidates for adoption. Once again we wish to thank our local Veterinarians for taking the time to educate our readers and improve the health and well-being of our animal friends. Also, our trainers try to make life a little easier for us and our pets. And last, but certainly not least, are our advertisers. Please take a minute to look at our advertising list below and please try to patronize them if at all possible. Without them, there would be no Triad Happy Tails Magazine!

ON THE COVER: Tank is an eight month old Boxer or Boxer mix. He is very sweet, and will be neutered before he goes to his new home. He came in as a stray about a month ago. As you can see by his cover pose, he’s curious and would really like to get out and explore the world. He would make a good running partner, so if you are looking to get into shape before summer, here’s the perfect “personal trainer”. Ask for Tank ID#19415132. Meow Meow & Cici are twin sisters who are quiet and sweet. They’ve had a hard life in a trailer park where they had to race up to tree tops or hide under cars to escape dogs, cats and mean-spirited people. These petite, shiny little bookends are easy to get along with and Purrfect Friends Cat enjoy a lap in which to purr Rescue & Adoption and “make biscuits.” It would be great to see them adopted together. Sheltering … Many Choose to Ignore the Reality, But the Facts Remain! by Marsha Williams, Director of the Guilford County Animal Shelter

M

any of us are afraid to go to the shelter - the smells, the sounds, those pleading eyes, it is heartbreaking! We cry just seeing those poor creatures in the cages, it’s just too depressing. We just cannot turn our backs! Did you know that approximately five to seven million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and approximately three to four million are euthanized (60 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats). The animals are also afraid of the noise, smells and overcrowding in the rows of cages. The honest truth is, confined to those cages, are cats and dogs we are afraid to face, so we choose to turn our backs and ignore. But these victims of circumstances cannot ignore it. They do not have a choice. They do not have a voice. When bewildered animals are surrendered to the shelter, they cannot say, “Please, I do not want to go there!” When they are running loose in the streets, or abandoned in a field, they cannot cry out, “Wait, wait you left me!” Those who become lost by accident, are thrilled to find caring, loving people who provide a safe warm or cool place, give them food, water, medicine

Our volunteers are some of the best in the nation. One of the many ways our community can help make a difference.

and vaccines. But after several days, they don’t understand why their owners have not come to rescue them and take them home. So much joy is felt when animals are reunited with their families who visit the shelter and have located them safe at the shelter. Others are brought in by animal control because they have been in a home where they have been abused or neglected by those who were supposed to love them. Those pets are ecstatic to have a place where their wounds are being cared for, hunger and thirst quenched and kindness replaces a kick or beating. The saddest are the pets whose owners love them dearly, but circumstances prevent them to continue caring for them. When animals are surrendered by their tearful owners, the shelter worker is sometimes reduced to tears as well. Believe it or not, we are compassionate people who love animals and want what is best for them. The last thing in the world these people want to do, is to turn their beloved companions over to a shelter. Because animals love unconditionally, and connect so strongly with their owners, they can sense the owner’s distress. The shelter workers try to assure the owners, they will take good care of their beloved pets and

will make every effort find a loving home.

Our goal is to elminate the euthanization of healthy animals. Decreasing the pet population through spay/neuter will positively impact our euthanasia rate. We cannot adopt ourselves out of this situation, spay/neuter is the key! The Guilford County Animal Shelter’s goal is to think outside the box and save as many animals as possible. Does that mean that the Guilford County Animal Shelter is a no kill shelter? Of course not, we are a open door public shelter and we do not have the option to turn animals away because we are out of space. Because some intakes have bad temperaments, or may be sick or injured, they are not highly adoptable. The Guilford County Animal Shelter also accepts animals that have been deemed vicious, exposed to rabies, have serious injuries and owner request euthanasia for humane reasons. So, no, we cannot be a no kill shelter. Many people challenge the Guilford County Animal Shelter to be a no kill shelter. Some say we should refuse animals that fit into the categories mentioned above, let it be some-

The honest truth is, confined to those cages, are cats, dogs and other animals we are afraid to face, so we choose to turn our backs and ignore. These animals are also afraid of the noise, smells and overcrowding in the rows of cages, sadly they have no choice.

Nationally, a whopping 60% of dogs and 70% of the cats brought into shelters are euthanized! one else’s problem. If we were to do that, who would take care of the animals that are putting the public in danger because they have rabies, killing other pets and attacking families? Who would feed the hungry dogs and cats roaming the community because all shelters and rescues are full and are turning these animals away? Who would take care of the sick and injured, walking the streets in pain because of lack of medical care? How would we drive down the street if animals are running into traffic with no place to go, maybe getting hit by cars. If these poor creatures are not the shelter’s problem, who would step forward and care for them?

Programs to assist the public in helping keep animals out of the shelter —The dedicated staff at the Guilford County Animal Shelter are trying their best to do it right. We employ a very aggressive adoption program and our adoption rate is high, but we

cannot adopt our way out of the pet overpopulation problem in Guilford County. Please visit www.spotmobilespay.com for more information about our mobile low cost spay/neuter and wellness program. —The economy has made it hard for some to afford to feed their animals, we want to help keep them out of the shelter. Therefore, we are partnering with the Haley Graves Foundation and are offering free food to families who qualify, and helping them feed their pets through our Pet Pantry program. —We partner with rescue organizations to transfer both cats and dogs, purebred or mixed breeds, to help with placement and reduce euthanasia. —Our volunteers are some of the best in the nation. They come in early in the morning and participate in our Running Start Program where they have the opportunity to take dogs for walks off campus to get much needed exercise. They

work tirelessly with our animal population to train and socialize them, help with photography and participate in adoption fairs and events reaching potential adopters. —We’ve created “Susie’s Fund” to assist animals who come to the shelter abused, sick and injured. They receive the medical treatment they need to heal so they may find a forever home. Visit Susiesfund.com for more information. We are constantly striving to improve the quality of care we give to the animals in our community.

What can you do? The Guilford County Animal Shelter implores you to be a part of our mission to help animals in your county. This is NOT someone else’s responsibility, it is our responsibility. For those who can not bring themselves to face the animals at the shelter, there is still a myriad of ways you can help. —ALWAYS spay/neuter your pets. —Talk to your legislators about animal issues. Support laws encouraging spay/neuter, stronger punishment for animal abuse and neglect. —Report animal cruelty immediately. —Choose to adopt from the shelter when looking for a new pet, encourage your friends and family to do the same. —Become a volunteer. Spend time with the animals at the shelter or foster animals in your own home. Work at outside adoption events and much more. —Donate food, supplies or money to the shelter, especially to Susie’s Fund. —Attend events that raise money and promote the shelter and the animals who live there.

Choose to adopt from the shelter when looking for a new pet, encourage your friends and family to do the same. Teach your children one of life’s most valuable lessons, compassion for others.

Otis.

Lexi. Have you ever seen some-

Here is a very sweet 10 pound terrier mix looking for his forever home. He is 18 months old, house-trained and very good with other animals. His dream home would have a kitty companion, he adores cats! In a perfect world, he would also have some children in his new family. His little tail just goes crazy whenever he is giving kisses to little ones! Otis is a laid back kind of guy, he enjoys walks around the neighborhood and then he retires to the couch to relax. He would make an excellent addition to any family!

thing so cute? Lexi is a 6 week old Himalayan mix and she will be ready for her fur-ever home after she is spayed! So far she has had a round of shots and her first de-worm. Lexi has a huge personality for such a little girl. She likes to run around her foster mom’s living room and take naps in the bay window. Lexi was abandoned by her real mom when she joined our family. She was only a few ounces, and we were worried she wouldn’t make it. Now, weeks later, she is a healthy weight and she is developing perfectly! Call us to learn more about how you can meet Lexi!

is a 2 year old kitty who came to us after sitting for a while at a shelter in Reidsville. She wasn’t having any luck finding a fur-ever family, so we decided to bring her into our program! We know she will find a family in no time because she is SO pretty and sweet! She loves to purr and make biscuits. Misty gets along great with other animals and she is very relaxed. You can meet Misty at the Burlington Petsmart!

This 6 month old darling is waiting to steal your heart! She is a little shy at first, but soon she will lay beside you on the couch. She is not a lap cat, but she is still very affectionate and loving. Aphrodite came to us with her brother, Cupid, who has already found his home! Now it is her turn! Aphrodite does well with other animals, and she is oh so stunning with her jet black coat! She is at the Burlington Petsmart waiting to meet her new best friends- go visit her today!

Max.

This kitty is very special to us. He came to us in January with his sister, and they were adopted together. Unfortunately, Max did not adjust well living with his sister, so he came back to us. We were happy he was back, because we had missed him, but we know he would be much happier with a fur-ever family! Max is doing much better with other kitties, now, especially kitties bigger than he is. He would love a rough and tumble play mate! Max is very affectionate and he loves to sit in laps and cuddle. He is currently at the Burlington Petsmart so go pay him a visit! For more information call 336-438-2023 or e-mail hsac@netpath.net. n May 2013 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails 16

Michael Andress, DVM Dr. Andress is the co-owner of Gate City Animal Hospital in Greensboro, which was established in 1997. He received his B.S. in Microbiology from Clemson University, then went on to obtain his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia. His work has been published in several veterinary medicine journals and he has spoken at local and national veterinary conferences. His special interests are in surgery and internal medicine.

Heat Stroke in Dogs Summertime is almost here. Soon it will be time to head to the pool, wear flip flops, and try to keep our kids entertained during their summer break. But as the temperature rises, don’t forget that our canine companions are susceptible to heat stroke. Heat stroke is a life threatening process in which the body is no longer able to control an elevated body temperature, potentially leading to severe organ damage. Dogs only sweat through their paw pads, which of course is not very effective. Their major mechanism for heat dissipation is through panting. Dogs with heavy hair coats, overweight dogs and short nosed dogs such as Pugs and Bulldogs have more trouble with heat stroke. But given the right conditions any dog can be affected. Environmental factors that contribute to heat stroke development are high heat and humidity, low ventilation and water deprivation. When the outside temperature is just 80 degrees, a closed car will reach 109 degrees in 20 minutes. Cracking a window does very little to help.

Q A

Q A

What can be done to prevent heat stroke? Prevention is the most important act that a pet owner can do. If your dog is outside, make sure that he is acclimated to higher temperatures. Have adequate shade protection for outside dogs. Always provide plenty of water. Avoid exercising your dog during the hottest part of the day. Take extra precautions with dogs that have heat stroke risk factors such as sicknesses, short noses, thick hair coats and being overweight. Never force water into your dog’s mouth. Do not confine your dog to small enclosed areas with poor ventilation. Unfortunately, too many dogs develop heat stroke when kept in cars even for a short period of time. Let’s all have a great summer and remember to keep our dogs safe and cool.

Gate City Animal Hospital • Internal Medicine

What are common signs of heat stroke?

• Senior Care • Dentistry

Once dogs become overheated, the common signs of heat stroke are panting, increased heart rate, excessive salivation, weakness, vomiting and diarrhea. As the disease progresses shock, seizures and organ failure may develop. Immediate veterinary attention is needed as this condition can be fatal.

Q A

What is the treatment for heat stroke? The first part of treatment is to get the patient out of the hot environment and quickly, but correctly, cool the body down. Using ice or even cold water can actually worsen the situation by causing blood vessels to constrict and prevent core cooling. The proper way to lower the body temperature is using fans and water soaked towels under the arm pits and groin areas. Depending on the severity of the case, the patient is given intravenous fluids, antibiotics, stomach protectants and oxygen among other treatments. Some require several days of hospitalization. Even with aggressive care, some dogs cannot overcome the heat damage and die from organ failure.

name is Ziggy, and I am one of Mamma Meia’s babies. I am a very sweet little boy who loves playing with toys and wrestling with my sis and brothers. I am just a sweet kid who loves to be held and would make any home very special just being a part of your family!

My name is Kelsey and I was rescued after 7 of the 11 puppies in my litter had died while my owner was in the hospital for liver failure for 10 days and no one fed our mom so she could not feed us. Me and my 3 brothers were taken in by AARF and were bottle-fed until we became strong and healthy. We all look like fat little bears and love to run and play. We are all very sweet and love to cuddle.

Pippy. This beautiful little girl

Gromit

is Pippy and she is up to pippy-business all the time, or puppy-business. She is going to make a family a great addition to their home. She’s snuggly when you need to snuggle and playful when you want to play. Her favorite time of the day is when she hears the school bus because she knows her playmates are home. Pippy is doing great with her potty training and house-training. She sleeps through the night so what more could you ask for? Pippy was born approximately 12/15/12 and appears to be a Spaniel/Spitz mix.

is Wallace’s pet dog and also is generally more intelligent than Wallace. His birthday was in February and he turned one year old. Gromit is a Boxer mix with a very endearing personality. He loves to play and is a seasoned expert on using a doggie door. Gromit loves people, dogs, and cats. Gromit is neutered and fully vaccinated. Casey

Buddy

was born 11/20/12, is a Lab/Boxer mix and at 4.5 months she weighs about 30 lbs. She is an energetic pup who loves people and likes to run & wrestle with other dogs. She needs a home with a fenced-in yard where she can be played with daily to burn off her high energy. After a full & energetic play time, she loves her crate and naps happily. She attends to her foster mom very well & learns quickly using praise & treat rewards. Casey is looking for a family who will play with her a lot and is committed to teaching her new things.

Meet Buddy, a trailer park native from outside Guilford County. Buddy was adopted from ARFP in April 2012 and recently returned to ARFP due to the owner’s health. Buddy is a loving boy that is declawed in the front. Buddy still has a lot of kitten in him but can also be a lap cat when he tires out. Buddy loves to play ball and is fine with other cats as he has always lived with other cats. Buddy is also fine with dogs. Buddy is neutered, declawed, andup-to-date on his shots. This loving boy is looking for a home to call his own forever. Might you be that home?

Max Too

What a great guy Markey is! He was abandoned, injured, and not in good shape. Fortunately he tested negative for feline leukemia and after foot surgery and neutering he is in great shape and a happy little boy like he should be! Markey was born in March of 2012 and is a real sweetheart. He’s a team player and loves all people, big and small. Markey really deserves a home where he will be loved and safe forever.

(because we have two Max’s) is an 8 month old boy who is truly all boy. He loves to play and run and chase and wrestle. He likes to chase all the other cats and is in play mode all the time. Every few days Max goes into cuddle mode and needs a lap to cuddle and nap in. Basically - he is like a little boy - all energy and play. He is going to be a big cat with a long, sleek body. He is one of those cats that loves to “make biscuits”. Max was found in the middle of I-40 on a busy Friday night last August 2012. A young guy pulled over and picked him up out of the road and saved him. Max was born in July 2012 and is a really dear boy!

FERAL CAT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM 336.378.0878 / www.feralcatassistance.org

Cashew,

Jack.

almost a year old, is now the last of his siblings still waiting to find his forever home and family. He’s an adorable boy who still has a lot of kitten in him. He is vigorously playful and loves chasing balls and killing toy mice. He remains very loving and affectionate and loves hugs and back rubs, which make him purr quite loudly. He is an entertaining and loving fur companion. With that irresistible face, and endearing purr-sonality, we can’t figure we out why he hasn’t gone home yet, but we know there is a special home out there for this very special kitty.

Little tiny, fuzzy Jack is still looking for his forever home. His eye is damaged from an upper respiratory infection he suffered as a kitten but that doesn’t detract at all from Jack’s extreme cuteness and endearing ways. Jack is a very happy cat in spite of his damaged eye and he does all of the normal things a cat can do! Jack is very playful and affectionate and loves to spend time with his foster family, just hanging out in their sunroom. Crinkle balls and string are his favorite action toys. Jack would fare best in a household as a single cat as he appears to be intimidated at times when other cats are around. Of course, this would enable him to get all of the attention. We think little Jack will absolutely steal your heart. Jack was born in August 2011.

Marble. Poor Marble, about a

Nutmeg,

year old, was left inside a house when his owner moved away. The new tenant didn’t want him, so he put him outside. Luckily an FCAP volunteer rescued the poor boy. We can’t imagine that anyone would abandon this wonderful cat. He is ready now and deserves a real home with someone that will love him forever! Marble is handsome, outgoing, affectionate and playful. He likes to ‘talk’ and tell you what he thinks, making sure you don’t forget about him. He is an affectionate boy who loves to sleep on the bed, make biscuits and wiggle around until you give him attention and cuddles. Marble’s foster Mom describes him as a very funny boy. If you have lots of love to give this big boy, Marble might be the kitty for you.

about 3 years old, is a beautiful long-haired orange boy who we think is just irresistible! He had a home, but his family returned him to FCAP when they were no longer able to care for him. It wasn’t Nutmeg’s fault. His family raved about what a wonderful cat he has been. He loves to play with his toys and have cuddle time with his family. Lying on their laps and lounging on their chests, getting as close as possible for some one-on-one love are among his favorite things to do. Nutmeg is one absolutely handsome kitty. He gets along well with other cats, but we aren’t sure about dogs. Being the laid back boy he is, he would probably adjust well to a cat friendly dog. Nutmeg deserves to find a new home where he will be loved and cherished forever for the amazing cat he is!

Tinkerbelle is

Janie

a beautiful torbie and white kitty with the most amazing green eyes you could imagine! Her eyes are the first thing you notice when you see her. She was adopted as a kitten, but when her family had to move to another state, they could not take her with them. Sadly, Tinkerbell has been waiting for a permanent home ever since that time. Tink is 7 years old and is sweet, gentle, and affectionate. She loves interactive play with a feather wand. She can be a bit shy at first, but when she gets to know you, she will be your fur-ever friend. If you have room in your heart for this amazing girl, she promises be a perfect, loving companion.

is an absolutely gorgeous solid blue domestic short hair and was previously declawed. Janie is loving, affectionate and calm. Though hard to believe, she was dumped at the shelter after 12 years of living with a family that she thought loved her. Fortunately, FCAP was able to rescue Janie from the Shelter. Janie is currently suffering some health issues, but she will soon be available for adoption and ready for her photo to be taken. A girl always wants to look her very best for having her photo taken. Is there room in your heart for this awesome girl? She deserves a loving home with people who will love her forever and never let her down again.

Lucky and Irish are very bonded and may be mother and son. They are very skinny and had no veterinary care for a year. They have now been evaluated and vaccinated by our veterinarian and will have their teeth floated once they are healthy enough for sedation. Irish is very social and loves attention, but does not seem to have any training. Lucky is shy at first, but once haltered she has beautiful ground manners and may have been a show horse at one time. Both horses are small (approximately 14.2 hands) and we are unsure of their breed. Lucky is a beautiful mover. Irish seems to be slightly gaited, so he may be some sort of gaited cross. Dear Family, I found 2 cool websites. . . www.DogFriendlyOBX.com and www.OcraDogs.com last summer when you all went on vacation to the Outer Banks and left me at Aunt Millie’s with her 9 cats. There are some great vacation homes from Corolla to Nags Head to Ocracoke Island that I would love to stay in. I can picture it now. . .running on the beach and chasing the birds, crabs, waves, surfers, beach balls and pretty much anything else that moves. Then, after a long fun day on the beach, we can all sit and relax on the decks or by the pool at one of these houses. I have it all planned out and I have been packed for a year. . .I just have to dig up my things in the backyard.

Duck is a male birddog and he has stolen our hearts. So hang on to yours. He needs a home and would love to have a pond. He is a calm adult dog with lots of good years left in him. In fact, he has been offered a position with a major insurance company to replace that other duck. Duck declined, he says he wants to stay away from all that Hollywood craziness. His adoption fee is only $20.00, a great deal for a great dog with star power! Check out Duck at www.rcaspets.org or call 336-683-8235. n

Dizzy. I’m about 4 years old and was surrendered to a shelter after I was born with an under developed eye, so I am blind in one eye. I love to play with the other foster dogs and I do get along with some children, it just depends on the child. When I’m not playing with the other dogs I love to snuggle, give kisses and sleep under the covers. I am house-trained if I am let out enough times during the day and I walk Chihuahua Rescue great on a leash. I am neutered, up-to-date on shots and heartworm negative. If you think that you might be interested in giving me a forever home, please fill out and submit an application and someone will be right back in touch with you. Nemo is 4 years old and weighs 18 lbs. He gets along with his foster brothers and sisters most of the time. Nemo wants to be alpha dog, but he clearly backs down when confronted by a true alpha Almost Home Dachshund Rescue dog, however, he will push his weight around with the lower members of the pack. Nemo loves to be with his family and will follow you everywhere. He is house-trained and crate-trained and is very loyal to his family. Nemo will only go to a family that is experienced with Dachshunds and their personalities, a home without other dogs, cats or children. He has all the characteristics of a great hunter, including the spirit it takes to pull a mean badger from its hole. Nemo is fully vetted. Visit www.almosthomerescue.org to find out more about Nemo. n

Trio was in a loving home when somehow he got loose and was struck by a vehicle, damaging his left rear leg so badly that the vet said it would need to be amputated. The family didn’t have the means to pay for surgery and not knowing what else Doberman Rescue of the Triad to do, with sadness, they left the dog with the vet to be euthanized. Thankfully, instead of euthanization, surgery was performed and a rescue angel helped him find his way to Elijah’s House. To see him in action, you’d never know anything was wrong. He has adapted wonderfully to the absence of a leg. Trio is such a good dog for being so young - he doesn’t chew things, he’s not a barker, he walks nicely on a leash and rides well in the car. Sadie was found at a hunting club waiting patiently underneath a tree stand. There was no one else around and the next day she was still waiting. A kind couple took her to a local vet but couldn’t keep her so GSRA is helping out. She’s around 2 years old and good with dogs, cats, kids and potbellied pigs. She is house-trained, crateGerman Shepherd trained, great on leash, and even rings Rescue & Adoptions the doorbell to ask to go out and back in. Sadie is a super fast learner! Her first love is cuddling, car riding is a close second. She has a little bit of an ACL issue (healed rupture) but the only time it’s acted up so far is in really cold weather. If you’re looking for a super sweet, great-natured dog, Sadie’s your dog.

Training Your Pet

Digging Dogs and What to Do

by Kim Vaughn

Y

ou know the scene. You spent more than you planned on carefully chosen flowers, then spent all morning on your hands and knees planting, only to come out and find your four-legged pal among a mess of shredded petals and our Carolina red clay all over his happy and proud face. What to do? First, realize that scolding him after the fact, even just a few minutes afterwards, will not be helpful. Your dog is not able to connect punishment with something that has already occurred. You will be most effective in stopping the digging if you can understand why your dog is digging. One of the most common reasons dogs dig is simply for the entertainment. Some breeds, like terriers, just love to dig. Sporting or herding breeds may need something to do to be happy. Other dogs, possibly younger dogs, need an outlet for their energy. If your dog adopts a playful stance when digging and alternates between digging and running around, he is likely just digging for the fun of it. If your dog is digging for entertainment, work on focusing their energy elsewhere. Not getting enough exercise is one of the leading causes of problem behaviors. Walk your dog at least twice a day, take him to the dog park or to a daycare. Play fetch with your dog or practice commands. Remember – a tired dog is a happy dog. Keep some entertaining toys in the yard for when you are not around. Also, a small gardening fence may be just enough to encourage your dog to find entertainment elsewhere. Your dog may be digging to bury her bones or treats. Some dogs will bury food by digging a hole, placing the item in the hole, then covering it. If your dog does this, she is simply following her ancestral urge to hide her food leftovers from scavengers so she can

40

return for them later. You can deter this type of digging by only giving your dog food and treats that they will consume immediately. If your dog is digging along the fence in an effort to escape, try burying chicken wire along the base of the fence. Just be sure that any sharp edges are pointed away from your dog’s area. You may also try burying large rocks along the base of the fence or burying the fence 1 to 2 feet below the surface. Dogs may dig because they are hunting ground-dwelling animals or insects. This is likely the case if your dog is digging in a specific area, at the roots of trees or shrubs or in a path. Your dog can not resist his natural instincts to hunt. But, you can take measures to keep rodents and insects out of your yard. Just be sure to use safe and humane methods and remember not to use poisons. Any poisons that can harm rodents could harm your dog as well. As an alternative, you can provide a sandbox or a dedicated digging zone in your yard that contains loose soil and buried toys for your dog to find. Whatever solutions you try,

remember that loving and positive solutions are always the most effective ones.

OME is where the dogs are. Love went with me when I left today and love waits for me on many paws...every moment until I return. First and foremost is our Beagle. We named her Bella (cane). In Italian it usually means good (dog). However, in “beagle” it is anything and everything but good and much, much, more. She was just a pup (who, now, at five-years-of-age still acts just like a pup). A pure-bred pocket Beagle, she was thrown away in the back of someone’s pick-up truck because she had a “crook” in her tail and could not be sold as perfect. She came to us because we are suckers for the homeless and to be honest, we are partial to Beagles--we won’t admit to that but we are--with Bella being our third. We consider her to be the leader of the pack. We just don’t let her know that. When Sam pulls up in the driveway, her wailing can be heard throughout the neighborhood. A huge voice for such a little dog. In addition to being extremely cute, we also thought Bella was smart. Devious beyond belief would have probably been a much more apt description. She fit right in with the others, not being aggressive or selfrighteous due to her pure-bred status. House-training, on the other hand, was a matter of personal preference--hers not always being outside where the call of nature was supposed to be answered.

While my pack has not won awards and they do not have “papers,” they are all AKC registered--forever--in my heart. Leaving your car or house keys on the kitchen table was not an option. It was an act of lunacy. They would soon disappear-never to be seen or heard from again. Her many hiding places were undetectable and she had different spots scattered about the house. Bella had an ultimate trick that surprised even us. A can of dog food had been left in the center of the kitchen table--well out of her reach.

She put her front paws on the edge of the table and rested the bottom of her snout on the top of the can. Very methodically she eased the can back to the edge of the table until it fell off. She carried it in her mouth to one of her favorite places--Sam’s bed--and then proceeded to open the can with her teeth. She managed to get the entire lid off without cutting her mouth and she enjoyed a delightful noon-day treat. Needless to say, that is not where we keep canned dog food anymore. But this clever canine has imparted a new found wisdom on me. If you put your mind to a project--anything--absolutely anything--can be accomplished with enough determination. Our next dog stank. No, I mean it--she really stank. She was a three-month old Golden Retreiver who was thrown into a dumpster by some totally uncaring individual with no respect for life in any form. A compassionate passer-by rescued her from the dumpster’s confines and asked us, “Do you have room for one more?” Although she was young, she, too, adapted to the pack and soon became the mother-figure to baby Bella and all of the other dogs. We named her Miss Pooh in honor of the terrific stench she brought into our lives. This fragrance went away after a time and numerous smellygood baths. It was replaced by a love shown only by goldens to all of their comrades. She constantly licked and bathed the other dogs who, in turn, would cuddle up against Miss Pooh at night to keep her warm. Again, a lesson to be learned that all random acts of kindness are always rewarded. Mister Neville is the “cat” of our dog family. A better mouser/ratter does not exist anywhere. Being only a fifteen-pound tan Terrier-mix, he has come back home with many a three-pound rat in his mouth. He lies in wait until the sly creatures try to cross our backwoods. Size never deters him. And he always makes sure they are dead before he tries to sneak them into the house to show us his rat-du-jour. His catch-of-the-day. His prize. He is a proud boy who wants his gift to be admired. He hangs with Bella and often the two can be seen chasing each other around the fenced back yard--both trying to outrun

each other. He has taught me that perseverance always wins out. Always. Miss Minnie survived death row at the pound. She beat the odds. I spotted her out of the corner of my eye and because she resembled one of our past dogs, Miss Val, I immediately took an interest in her. On her kennel at the shelter was a sign, “Three-years-old, surrendered by owners, does not get along with children.” This is a death sentence at an animal shelter where families are selecting dogs for adoption. But this proved to be a total misnomer. Barely six pounds soaking wet, Miss Minnie is the little loud lover of our group. Barking is her forte----loud, and plenty of it. But she is also a little bundle of love. She sleeps in the crook of my arm and never moves during the night, Never was a dog more grateful for a new home than Miss Minnie. And from her, this tiny Chihuahua, I learned that you sure can pack a lot of love into a very small package. Bambi is our miniature German Shepherd. She was found by my co-worker, Paula and recycled to us in need of a good home. Terrified of thunder and lightning, she crawls under a bed at the first sign of a storm--long before we even know that one is approaching. Bambalina is our Italian pet name for her. She was Miss Vickie’s longtime companion. Vickie recently passed away after spending the last twenty years with us. When she died, Bambi did not know what had happened to her best friend. We comforted her the best we could, but it took a good while for her to get over the loss of such a good dogmate. Bambi is the first to bark warnings. She is alert and the best watch dog you could ever want. And once she starts, they all start---sounding like forty. Learning from Bambi has been easy: hug that someone you love today and enjoy the company of others while you can as tomorrow may take them away. Last but most assurdedly not least, is our biggest dog, Miss Sadie. Miss Sadie came to us from another co-worker, Heather, who found her wandering the streets of our city. She had been abused by another family for six years prior coming to us. She sleeps by the side of my bed always cognizant of my comings and goings. She is a true guardian angel. My guardian angel. Looking like a 150-pound Border Collie----Sadie is probably mixed with a very, very big dog as Border Collies are much smaller. Greater loyalty in a friend does not exist. While my pack has not won awards and they do not have “papers,” they are all AKC registered----forever----in my heart.

Animal Hoarding and What You Can Do to Help

Sadly, according to the Animal Hoarding Project, animal hoarding is on the rise. So what can you do? The first thing, is to be aware of certain situations and look for signs.

By Kitty Elder

A

s defined by Wikipedia, animal hoarding is keeping higher than usual numbers of animals as domestic pets without having the ability to properly house or care for them, while at the same time denying this inability. According to Dr. Gary Patronek, founder of the Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium at Tufts, there are three basic types of animal hoarders: (1) the Exploiter, (2) the Overwhelmed Caregiver and (3) the Rescuer. —The Exploiter is someone who keeps many animals to serve their own needs and is indifferent to the suffering of the animals. Back yard breeders or puppy mill operators can be examples of this type. —The Overwhelmed Caregiver is someone who initially provides adequate care for their animals, but due to a crisis (a health issue, death of a family member, or similar situation) finds themselves unable to care for their animals. —The Rescuer is someone who accumulates animals in order to help or “save” them. They honestly think they are helping the animals and rarely adopt any out, since they think that no one else can care for the animals as well as they can. The Rescuer hoarder isn’t an evil person, but because their hoarding is a type of mental illness (believed to be related to obsessive compulsive disorder or dementia), they don’t “see” the living conditions of their animals.

There are always animals in need of saving and the rescuer hoarder thinks “I can squeeze one more in”. Problem is, one more is followed by one more, and so it never ends. Perhaps the decline in proper care of the animals starts slowly. Instead of washing all water bowls daily they decide...I can top them off and wash them every other day. Then it becomes every week and then becomes never. I visited my first hoarding situation in 2006. The five years prior to starting my Manx rescue, (www.taillesscatrescue.com), I had been volunteering for an all breed, open intake shelter. As a result, I’d seen a lot of cases of abuse and neglect, but nothing prepared me for this hoarding situation. This case involved 158 cats in a double wide trailer, no running water, no heat and intermittent electricity. They were supposed to have a Manx cat, so I went to pick her up. The first thing that struck me upon stepping out of the car was the smell. It was overpowering! I wasn’t even in the house yet, but could smell the ammonia from the urine and the stench of feces. Upon entering the trailer I was stunned by the sheer number of cats…and the floor smeared with feces. Everywhere you looked there were cats, many with eyes full of green goo from infections, or noses running. The woman couldn’t find the Manx, so we searched the home. She would open a kitchen cabinet and there would be cats living inside! Even opening a drawer in the kitchen produced a cat. In the end there wasn’t a Manx cat, I went home empty handed and with a heavy heart. Other rescue groups came and took 153 of the cats, leaving her with five and instructions not to accumulate more. She was recenty in the news again with 150 cats seized from her home. Of those taken, 100 have already been euthanized, too sick to be treated. Before you adopt or surrender that animal, check the “rescue” out. NC State law Instead of washing all water bowls daily they decide... fosters in a single home. More than that, and they have to register as a shelter, follow state animal welfare laws and be inspected each year. Does the rescuer let you meet the animals where they live? Look at photos in their adoption listings…what is in the background? Are dogs photographed on bare dirt where they live in bare chain link runs? What do you see behind the cat - is the floor filthy? Will the group tell you openly how many animals they have? Are all the animals spayed and neutered? Can they provide vaccination records showing all the animals are up to date? If it is an individual, will they let you into their home? Can you smell ammonia and feces from outside their homes? Do they know how many animals they own? Does the person look like they are taking care of themselves or are they in dirty clothes with unkempt hair? Do they insist the animals are happy and healthy, even though you can tell they are too thin or have fleas or appear neglected? If you know the person and think it might be an overwhelmed caregiver situation, talk to them. See if they’ll accept help and be willing to adopt out some of the animals. If you don’t know them well or they are belligerent or resistant to help, call your local humane society or police department to make a report. It’s a hard thing to do since you don’t know where the animals might wind up, but you have to do it both for the animals and for the hoarder’s sake. The person could be mentally ill and need help. The poor animals are living in a version of hell. And one other thing you must do…make sure your pets are all spayed and neutered, encourage your friends to do the same. As long as there are hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats being put to death in shelters in NC, there will be a glut of animals for hoarders to accumulate.

Sully. Sweet Sully

6 lb. Yorkshire Terrier. Sawyer’s two back legs are paralyzed from an injury long ago where he didn’t get the medical care that he needed. Sawyer loves people, children and Finding Great Homes other animals. He’s a smart, nonfor Jack Russell Terriers shedding dog who is house-trained, crate and leash-trained. Sawyer has been neutered and is up-to-date on his shots and has been fitted for a custom-made wheelchair.

has endured a lot of abuse and neglect. Now, he has nothing but kisses and tail wags for everyone he meets! Sully had an embedded collar that is now healing up very well and he doesn’t even mind his medicaLab Rescue of NC tion. He recently arrived at his foster home and is very happy to be with people who love him. Sully is a wonderful guy and has lots of love to give!

Seeking Shelter

Stokes County Animal Shelter Needs Your Help By Suzie Beasley

Do the math, 2,000 animals taken in for 2012, only 24 spots available! Stokes County desperately needs a larger space. They come in all shapes and sizes; Big and small, short and squat, fluffy and fat, thin, timid & frightened. But they’re all there for the same reason: seeking shelter and safety. The Stokes County Animal Shelter, a little shelter in the woods, is located in Germanton, N.C. With a staff of four Animal Control Officers and numerous volunteers, the animals are given food, love and never ending hope of finding their forever home. But there is one thing that is needed and needed badly: SPACE. The Shelter has only twelve dog stalls, with no outdoor access. The cat area is small as well, with only twelve cat cages. You do the math; with hundreds of animals taken in monthly (2,000 for 2012),

mostly strays and numerous owner surrenders, the stalls and cages are filled to the max. 24 spots, the difference between life and death! When adoptions don’t happen and more space is needed, unfortunately, euthanizing is what makes space for the many more animals that will come. There is no space to quarantine sick animals and sadly, illness spreads quickly, making euthanisia the only option to protect the others. Unfortunately, some illnesses, such as Parvo, will not show symptoms until it has infected the other stall mates. Two years ago, Animal Control Officer Sarah Johnson decided to turn to FACEBOOK to help the animals at the shelter. Thankfully, adoption rates have increased from 10% to 67%. Rescue groups & indi-

viduals wanting to foster have made a big difference as well. But as quickly as they are adopted or rescued, more come in just as fast. Stokes County has provided 1.5 acres to build a new & bigger shelter. The goal is to raise $25,000 to purchase a Morton Building (Google it!). This money is needed by June 30, 2013. The building will be 3,000 sq. feet and more can be added in the future. Contractors have voiced interests in providing contruction/labor needs. The projected completion time is 2015. But moving forward relies on the funding. It is estimated it will take $450,000 to complete this project. $25,000 is needed just to purchase the building and get started. Fund-raisers are being held, donations are given by kind individuals, all with the hope & dream to build what is needed for those with no voice of their own, the animals. If you would like to see the shelter animals go to Facebook and “LIKE” The Stokes County Animal Shelter. For information call 336-994-2788. If you would like to donate then please mail a check made out to:
