Happy is a neutered male Lab/Bully mix around 2 years old. He has recently completed obedience and agility training, but needs a home where his skills can be reinforced daily. This handsome boy does struggle with socialization with other dogs, so it is important for him to find a home where he can be the only pet. Happy craves human affection and attention, and we think he deserves a home where he can be loved on all day! This sweetie will be best fit in a home with an experienced dog owner since he must maintain his regimen of activity and training.

ON THE COVER: Spotty and Spiffy, Nigerian Dwarf Goats, are super cute brothers who absolutely need to be adopted together. They had lived on a farm but their owner was no longer able to care for them. They are quite tame and will eat treats from your hand. They appear to be very healthy other than for the fact that their horns have curled around funny and are very close to growing back in to their heads. Our veterinarian will trim their horns and fix that issue ASAP. They have already been castrated and will be vaccinated prior to adoption. These two would be great “first goats” or a good addition to any pet herd. For more information about adopting Spotty and Spiffy, or any of the other great animals that are being fostered, please contact Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue at: www.reddogfarm.com.

Vet’s Corner Lynne Catania, DVM Forsyth Mobile and Relief Veterinary Services Dr. Lynne Catania received her degree from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2002. She is a fully mobile, progressive, experienced mixed animal veterinarian providing mobile veterinary care to horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, alpacas, dogs and cats in the Winston-Salem area since June of 2013. With 12+ years in veterinary practice, she was raised in Western NY on a Registered Jersey Cattle Farm that showed nationwide. She was in mixed animal practice for 7.5 years in NW PA prior to going on her own in relief and large animal practice, in PA/NY. She moved to Winston Salem in 2011 with her husband and three children, and repeated her model from NW PA, offering relief veterinary services to the community. Currently, she serves several veterinary hospitals in the Triad, and also offers her services at the Central Spay, Neuter and Wellness Clinic in Kernersville in an effort to help control the pet population. It was her passion and desire to cultivate meaningful client relationships and her need to work directly with her own clients and patients that brought about the start of Forsyth Mobile and Relief Veterinary Services in June of 2013.
Benefits of “At Home” Veterinary Care “At Home” Veterinary Care seems to be a phenomenon that is catching on across the country. When I started my mobile mixed animal veterinary service in June of 2013, it was on the hunch that pet / animal owners would be excited about the utility. So far, my hunch has been correct! In my travels recently to CA, I noticed a large number of “mobile vets” especially in the small animal realm, on the road. It seems that this is a growing business model nationwide. I am quickly learning why! Pet owners love the service for many reasons. I have tried to itemize some of them here. My personal background is in both small AND large animal medicine. While it is my calling to serve dogs and cats, it is due to my love for hooved animals (cattle, horses, llamas, alpacas, goats, sheep and the occasional pot-bellied pig), that I felt a mobile “mixed animal” practice would be a novel idea. So, for farm animal owners, YES - I will see your dogs on a farm call, too! But, for the nature of simplicity and this magazine, this article is written in regards to house pets. Pets tend to feel “safe” when within their own environment and they truly tend to be more at ease to handling. There are not as many “foreign smells” within the home of the pet that would get them alarmed. This often allows the veterinarian to do things, with the owner present, that may not be remotely possible in a veterinary office without sedation or even the need for general anesthesia. Pets that succumb to car sickness, have immense anxiety from a car ride or setting foot into a traditional veterinary hospital, are prime
candidates for “at home” veterinary care. Those extra-large patients or those that are less mobile from arthritis can also benefit tremendously! Many owners find that if they have several pets requiring preventive care (vaccinations, etc.), it is much more convenient to have them all examined / attended to at once, in the home. This would save them time and would avoid the need to make several trips to the veterinary hospital with a few pets at a time. Oftentimes, this can also be a more costeffective deal, as you pay for one house call. Also, having your veterinarian come to you lowers the risk your pet will be exposed to diseases that could be lurking in a clinic waiting room from sick pets. This is a tremendous advantage if your pet is very young, elderly or has a weakened immune system. For the pet owner alone, at home veterinary care may be a huge blessing for people with hectic or unpredictable schedules, for couples with a new baby or young children at home and for shut-ins, senior citizens, and people who don’t drive. Owners who are facing the death of a beloved companion may prefer to have their pet euthanized at home, surrounded by family members. This is a very hard time for all, and can be a very loving and comforting thing to offer a pet that has been so special in their family’s life. Many services that can be offered in a traditional veterinary hospital can be offered or obtained in the home. Preventive care, exams, lab samples, and medical services that tend to be the most common can be offered, without compromising the standard of care. This is especially true for most preventive care, such as vaccinations, flea / heartworm and monitoring of many common conditions such as controlled diabetes, thyroid disease and most skin conditions. Services may vary depending on the equipment that the particular mobile vet has access to. This may seem like a wonderful thing all the way around, however, there are some disadvantages to mobile veterinary services. Service limitation may be a concern sometimes with “at home” veterinary services. When there is severe injury, radiographs, ultrasound, other advanced diagnostics, or the need for advanced surgical care / alteration - referral or transfer to a traditional veterinary hospital or even a specialty referral hospital may be necessary. So, if your pet is very ill or requires a specialist, a mobile unit probably isn’t the way to go. Mobile clinics are also not typically equipped to handle emergencies. This will vary from one mobile service to another though. For this reason, it is recommended you call first to see what services are available from the mobile vet that you choose. Appointment scheduling may sometimes be an issue. Due to travel, set-up time and other peculiarities of operating a mobile vet clinic, these vets-on-wheels are able to see far fewer patients each day than their counterparts in regular practice. You could run into a situation where appointments are booked far in advance or on a time table that may or may not work with your needs or the needs of your pet. Mobile veterinary services can be more expensive than the same services at traditional veterinary clinics. Travel to and from appointments carries its own expense, and each mobile call takes considerably longer than regular clinic visits. Mobile vets generally have no choice but to charge higher fees for the convenience of bringing their clinic to their patients rather than the other way around. However, this may vary from one service to another, depending on what services they offer and it’s recommended that you do your homework and evaluate what type of care would work out best for you and your pet. Weigh the pros and cons, and if you decide that at home veterinary care is for you and your pets, call Forsyth Mobile and Relief Veterinary Services. The Pros and Cons of Keeping Goats as Pets By Garland Graham
…just like dogs and cats. They love attention and treats.
W
hen my husband and I moved from Greensboro to Summerfield almost eleven years ago, I was dying to have a few pet goats. It seemed like a simple proposition, and I had no idea how much I would fall in love with them. I didn’t know a thing about goats, but have been very fortunate to have developed relationships with some wonderful local veterinarians who have helped me care for our pet goats over the years. We started out with two pygmy goats named “Holly” and “Motley.” Holly and Motley have now been with us for over ten years. A few years later “Sally Biscuit,” another pygmy, joined our herd when her previous owner needed to find a home for her. Then, we ventured in to the much larger Boer breed with the addition of “Beaumont” and “Bullwinkle,” two Boer goats who came to us from separate rescue situations, and rounded out our “forever herd.” Since founding Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network in 2006, we have also fostered many of the almost 200 goats that we have taken into the Red Dog Farm program. These goats generally come to our farm for their quarantine period and are vaccinated and castrated, then moved to other foster homes until they are adopted.

So, suffice it to say, over the last ten years we have learned an awful lot about goats. We have had large breeds, small breeds, milk breeds, meat breeds, friendly goats, skittish goats, pregnant goats, sick goats – you name it and we have probably had it in our barn. This article is not intended to provide veterinary advice. We are fortunate in this area to have wonderful large animal veterinarians who are very skilled in goat care. This article is intended to be a practical guide to goat ownership – the good, the bad, and the downright funny.
Goat truths as I have come to know them: 1. Goats are great fun. Each goat has his or her own personality, just like dogs and cats. They love attention and treats. They are extremely social, and enjoy the company of other goats as well as humans. They are curious, playful, and into everything. Which leads me to number two… 2. If it ain’t waterproof, it ain’t goat proof. Maintaining adequate fencing is probably the hardest part of owning goats. Goats are very clever and can squeeze through spaces you’d never think they could fit through. Fences need to be well constructed and well maintained. The more there is for them to eat within their
May 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
fenced area, the less time they will spend trying to find a way out of it. We use fourboard horse fencing with woven wire. The larger breeds are easier to keep in a fence than the smaller breeds. Not only must you keep your goats in, but more importantly is you must keep predators out. Which leads me to number three… 3. Dogs and goats don’t mix. Yes, there are exceptions. My golden retriever was friends with our goats, but even he would chase them if I wasn’t watching. For some reason, goats elicit a predator response from most dogs, and should never be left with dogs while unattended. Baby goats in particular are defenseless and squeaky, and dogs can make short work of them. Coyotes are also a big problem in this area. 4. Goats and most other farm animals do mix. Goats typically get along just fine with other small animals such as pigs and sheep. Depending on the sizes and breeds, some goats even get along just fine with horses, although maintaining goat-proof fencing in an area large enough for horses is very expensive. Our goats are even friends with our emu, though we have to separate them at feeding time because emu food, like some chicken feed, is toxic to goats. Feeding various species in one pasture can also be a challenge, so if you plan to
“ If it ain’t waterproof, it ain’t goatproof! Maintaining adequate fencing is probably the hardest part of owning goats.” have them together, you’ll need a barn or separate paddocks for feeding time. 5. Goats do not eat tin cans. Or celery. Or hay, that they consider to be beneath them. Yes, goats do like to eat, but they are actually pickier than you might think. They are curious and will pick up just about anything in their mouths (hence the tin cans myth), but they spit most things right back out. They are browsers, not grazers, so they are happiest “eating up” (vines, weeds, shrubs, etc.) and not “down” (grass). 6. Goats do require vaccines and hoof care. Goats need vaccines every year, just like household pets. They are at risk for rabies and are especially sensitive to tetanus if not vaccinated against it. Furthermore, goats need routine hoof care just like horses. But, because goat hooves are smaller and much easier to work with, you can trim your own goats’ feet with a good pair of goat trimmers (I like the trimmers with the orange handle
at Hoeggerfarmyard.com) and a lesson from your veterinarian. It does require two people, one to hold the goat still and the other to trim its hooves, but my husband and I have found that this makes for a fun date night in the barn. Well, at least I think it’s fun… 7. Goats are a 12 – 15 year commitment. Goats, much like cats and dogs, can live to be just as old as domestic pets. They are not allowed in most urban areas, so when adopting goats, not only are you committing to be a responsible goat owner for that length of time, but you are also committing to live in a rural area where your goats will be allowed.

If you do have the space, adequate fencing and the time to devote to pet goats, you will absolutely love having them as pets. I hope that if you do make the commitment to own
goats, you will also decide to adopt instead of buying from a breeder. Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network has taken in almost 200 goats in the last few years from animal control agencies in various counties, and there are always goats in need of homes.
All photos are courtesy of Steph Skardal Photography, (except Henry). Spotty and Spiffy, Nigerian Dwarf Goats, are super cute brothers who absolutely need to be adopted together. They had lived on a farm but their owner was no longer able to care for them.
For more information please check our website at www.reddogfarm.com or go to www.petfinder.com to find rescue goats in your area that need homes. You will be glad that you did! Garland and her husband, Gary, have always opened up their home and hearts to rehabilitate and foster homeless animals. After fostering 50 animals, they began to see the huge need for a rescue group in our area to help all animals, specifically farm animals. Garland and Gary decided to start a nonprofit rescue network to allow others to foster and donate. They founded Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network in 2006. Garland is still very active within the rescue group. She currently serves as President of the organization and fosters a variety of critters at their private farm. Q A
Is It ‘Just’ Old Age?
What is Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS)? Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome is a physical breakdown of brain tissue seen in older dogs, that can be compared to Alzheimer’s disease in people. The signs associated with the disease are usually slowly progressive and similar to age-related changes, so it can be difficult to recognize when something is wrong. Unfortunately, the only way to truly diagnose this condition is a brain biopsy, which is something we would obviously not recommend. Otherwise, it is diagnosed based on clinical signs, ruling out other diseases, and seeing how a pet responds to treatment.
Q A
What are the symptoms of CDS? Because the signs can also be normal age-related changes, it is important to work closely with your veterinarian to determine what is ‘just’ old age and what warrants further investigation.
Symptoms may include: —Restlessness/wandering/pacing —Lack of interest in surroundings/events —Confusion/disorientation/staring blankly —Increased or decreased sleeping —Reduced responsiveness to commands/apparent deafness —Inability to recognize familiar people —Increased thirst —Excessive panting —Loss of house training or having accidents in the house —Excessive barking
Q A
What is the next step if my pet has any of the clinical signs listed above? Rule out other diseases! Your veterinarian will do a full physical examination, take a complete history including nutrition and behavior, and perform routine lab work to rule out other common diseases. Based on the lab work, additional diagnostics may be
recommended if there are any abnormalities. Recently, a blood test has become available for diagnosing humans with Alzheimer’s disease, so eventually this may be an option for our pets!
Q A
What other diseases can mimic CDS and have similar clinical signs?
There are LOTS of diseases that can look like CDS. Some of the most common ones are: —Hypothyroidism —Kidney disease —Liver disease —High blood pressure —Cancer
Q A
If my pet has CDS, what can be done to help him? As with Alzheimer’s, unfortunately there is no cure for CDS, but there are quite a few options to help these pets. Regardless of the type of CDS, the common clinical feature is oxidative stress and damage to the brain cells. Therefore, all treatments look at helping with oxidative damage.
Treatment options include: Anti-oxidants- we recommend a powerful anti-oxidant and will sometimes prescribe a combination of pet anti-oxidants and an omega fatty acid supplement. Supplements can vary dramatically and a recent study indicated that 80% of supplements sold overthe-counter do NOT contain what they claim to contain. For that reason there are certain brands that we trust. Diet- we strongly recommend a high quality diet! In addition, certain diets contain prescription strength anti-oxidants and can replace supplements. Several companies have come out with diets specifically formulated for pets with brain disease. Ask us if you are interested in learning more about them. Medication- There are a few medications that have been proven to help with CDS and Alzheimer’s. This is a constantly changing field of medicine so always feel free to ask questions. Behavior therapy or modification- anti-depressants and behavior modification can be helpful with some pets. Also, making changes around the house to decrease stress on your pet can be very helpful! Changes include blocking off stairs, elevating food and water bowls and changing the location of your pet’s bed. We can discuss more specific recommendations for your pet’s unique needs. This can be a very frustrating illness to deal with, but there are things we can do to make it better! It can be tempting to simply sedate a pet with medications such as Xanax, but this can actually cause additional damage and can cause clinical signs to worsen over time. There is help out there. If you think your pet has signs consistent with CDS, let’s work together to help both you and your pet deal with the difficulties of aging! See our ad on page 4. www.triadhappytails.com May 2014

Radium. Hi! I’m Radium, a sweet 5 year old boy who is searching for my next home, as my owners can no longer care for me. I am already housebroken, and I love people and dogs and get along with the cat in my house too. I love rides in the car and hanging out in crowds. One of my eyes is blue, and the other is brown, which makes me even more special. This is a great opportunity for someone looking for a young, handsome, adult dog instead of a pesky puppy!
Smokey Joe was left behind when his owner moved out of a rental house. He is extremely friendly and loves kids. He was born in March of 2009 and has been neutered. He is FIV+ so should probably not be introduced into a multicat household. Contact AARF at 336-768-7387 for more information. n

Tiki, I am Tiki, one of 2 sisters found by the Winston-Salem Police Department, tied in front of a store with a note attached that stated our owner is sick and cannot keep us anymore. He asked that someone find us a good home. The nice officers rescued us and brought us to AARF to help us find a new home. My sister has found her forever home already, and now I would love to find mine! Due to AARF making a home visit as part of my adoption, I cannot be adopted outside of a one hour radius of Winston-Salem. Come meet me on Saturdays at an AARF Adoption Fair, 311 Harvey Street in Winston-Salem between noon and 4pm. n

Star is a pretty grey American Bobtail born about July 2010. She landed in a high kill shelter with her kitten, fortunately we were able to rescue her. Star is very social, she likes people and gets along well with other cats. She’s very playful, we think the vet may have overestimated her age when she was spayed, she acts like she still has a lot of kitten in her. She’s Tailless Cat Rescue spunky with that waggly little bobtail! She’s vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped, and is FeLV/FIV and heartworm negative. Kirby would probably do best in a home with no other dogs as he likes to be the one that gets all the attention! If you think Kirby would be a good fit with your family, please email us at: arsc2004@gmail.com. Kirby’s adoption fee is $95 n

Mary. Meet
Cammie. Meet Cammie! Yes,
little Mary and you’ll be hooked! The vet’s office called her Lure because a nice police officer turned her in with four fish hooks attached. Frannie and her sis-

ter Charlie were abandoned with a college student when their owner left town. Unfortunately for Frannie, she had a broken leg that was left untreated. Seven weeks in a cast and Frannie never even knew she had a broken leg! Go Frannie! Frannie has been spayed and is a delight to have around. She is a hearty girl that can, and will, play with the best of them. Frannie was born around January 1st, 2014. She is great in her crate and loves everyone!
came to ARFP after his elderly owner passed away. He is a wonderful two year old with a great personality! As with many male kitties he is just so sweet and gentle. Kirk has been neutered and is up-to-date on vaccinations. He has always lived in a multi-cat home and “plays well with others”. Kirk loves to be brushed and made over. He is a definite lap kitty and is ready to become a part of someone’s pack (and lap)! You can meet this guy at our adoption center most any day that we are open.

Jangles
Cashew
is one of several tuxedo cats currently available through FCAP. Like most tuxedos, Jangles is a friendly boy who seeks human contact. Tuxedo cats have a following among cat lovers. Some of the popular names for this type of cat include: Oreo, Panda, Zebra, Yinyang, Ritz, Boots, C.C. (Coffee & Cream), Eight Ball, Half & Half, Gala, and Moomoo. Jangles and his feline friends don’t mind if you change their names. Next time you are at PetSmart on Bridford Parkway in Greensboro, come say hello to Jangles. He is current on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered.
is a lap kitty whose purr can be activated by a single touch. He loves gentle belly rubs and will stand on his tiptoes to get the maximum rub when you stroke his back. At nearly 2 years old, this sweet boy loves to play and gets along with most other cats and feline-friendly dogs. Cashew has been adopted once, but one of the cats in that home just couldn’t accept him. So this beautiful boy is back at FCAP, seeking a loving home. Cashew is current on vaccinations, has been neutered, and has a microchip.

Pearl is on the hunt for
Sage.
a special person to love. This gorgeous silver tabby warms up slowly, but your patience will pay off. Although Pearl does not seek constant attention, she loves to lie in the sun near her human companion and appreciates petting and an occasional belly rub. You can see the love in her brilliant green eyes. Pearl is a calm girl but also enjoys play time. She prefers to be your only kitty but would adapt to life with a dog. Pearl would do best with adults and teenagers. If you seek a beautiful cat who does not require lots of attention, Pearl may be the one. This kitty is up-to-date on vaccinations, has been spayed, and has a microchip.
This handsome, long-haired tuxedo is about 3 years old, so he has experienced a bit of life. He is not easily startled and has a calm demeanor. Sage knows what he’s looking for in a new home. Though he is not a lap cat, Sage likes to follow his people around, much like a dog would. And if you’ve seen him at PetSmart, you know that he is the size of a small dog! Sage really loves his scratching post and is fond of his plush leopard-spotted bed. He is up-to-date on vaccinations, microchipped and neutered.

came to us a little skinny and a little worn but super sweet! He was originally found as a stray and we are estimating him to be around 1 year old. We don’t think Dobby has ever met a stranger. He is very outgoing for a little dog and shows no signs of a Napoleon Complex. Dobby seems to get along with all types of dogs, cats and people. Dobby has been updated on his vaccines, microchipped and neutered.
Bubba

Camilla is a
was found as a stray in Durham and became quite a local celebrity there after showing up in different locations all over town. He has now been castrated and vaccinated and is available for adoption. Bubba is currently being kept in a barn simply because he is nervous and might try and jump a normal pasture fence. We would like to find a herd of pet sheep for Bubba to join as he has been alone for quite some time, and we assume that he would not try to jump a fence at all if he had a herd to join. Bubba’s adoption fee will be waived for the perfect home where he will be a pet.
1 year old lion head rabbit that came to us when her owners had to move and were unable to take her along. Camilla is a sweet girl who loves her fruits and veggies and enjoys being handled by people, although she may occasionally get a little startled. Camilla would be a great pet for a family with or without children.
If you are interested in this BAA-utiful sheep, please fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Jasmine and Aladdin are a
rendered to Red Dog Farm when they outgrew their family’s tank and time. Turtles need plenty of space to swim, grow, and lounge. The proper set up for them includes a tank big enough to have a body of water and a land lounge area large enough for their entire body to fit on. They don’t like to be half in and half out of the water all of the time. Crush and Squirt enjoy a pelleted diet and leafy foods. They don’t mind being handled from time to time but are happy just to spend their days swimming and lounging. They are the ultimate beach bums!
bonded pair in their early to mid twenties who came to us from a situation in which their owners could not afford to care for them. They are thin but should gain weight quickly. Jasmine seems to be somewhat of a “seeing eye horse” for Aladdin, who definitely has some vision issues. They are timid of being caught but once haltered are very friendly. This pair needs a retirement home as they are past their years of being ridden. Because of their age, we will waive the adoption fee for Jasmine and Aladdin for the right home.
If you are interested in adopting any of them, please fill out an application at www.reddogfarm.com. n
If you have room for these two sweethearts please fill out an adoption application at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Until you know her, she’s a little shy, but when you’ve gained her trust (not hard to do), she’s rolling in your lap and wanting to do head-bumps. PJ would be an excellent and playful companion to a kitten around her age. Green/gold eyes, she’s a tux with a cute lopsided mustache. Training Your Pet
Happiness or Heartbreak Making Wise Decisions When Adopting a Shelter Dog
By: Linda Hofmann, Mt. Tabor Boarding & Grooming
I
t’s a good feeling when you decide to adopt a shelter dog. You’re saving a dog from a possible tragic event, opening your heart to a life long companion and helping to reduce the unwanted pet population, even if only by one. Making wise decisions when adopting a shelter dog can mean the difference between bringing happiness or heartbreak into your home. Shelter pets are surrendered for various reasons. It could be a family crisis, developing unwanted behavior issues, or a stray picked up and taken to the shelter. Previous histories are generally unknown. The more you can learn from the potential pet at the adoption time, the better you’ll be able to make an informed choice. Before making a trip to the shelter, do your homework. Research different breeds, their sizes, grooming needs, exercise requirements, common breed specific behaviors and special needs. Consider shelter dogs that resemble those pure breeds you would want to adopt. The day of your visit to the shelter do not be in a hurry. Bring some treats (if allowed) and a toy to help test potential pets behaviors. Think of a shelter like a visit to Goodwill. There are really good deals but you have to have some patience and look thoroughly. Choose wisely.
Professional training can be the difference between, well you know… Food/Toy Aggression: Place bowl of food/treat (if allowed) next to the puppy and then act like you are taking it away from her. Does she: Accept willingly? Good! Paws/whines? Good! Shows interest. Growls/Snarls? Bad Behavior! Suggests food aggression. Takes food out of bowl and moves away behind door/under chair? Caution! May be guarding food and could become aggressive if taken away. Place a new toy next to the puppy, Does she: Move toward it and sniff? Good! Pick it up? Good! She accepts new things readily. Shy away from it? Caution! This shows reluctance to accept new things and fear of unknown. Pick the toy up, Does she: Readily accept you taking the toy? Good! Whine/lunge toward you? This could be play mode and or show strong will. Growl or snap? Bad Behavior! Bites? DO NOT ADOPT!
v Testing Adolescent to Adult Dogs (5 months & older)
Separation Anxiety - Fears being left alone. This is sometimes difficult to determine in a shelter environment
Friendliness: When approaching her, does she: Come forward to greet you? Good! Shy Away? Caution! This shows fear. Stand Stiffly? Caution! This shows fear and reluctance to accept further movement toward her. Hold dog by the collar and pet her, Does she: Accept petting/ Move toward you? Good! Pull away from you? Caution! This shows fear and reluctance to accept new people. Stiffens up/ bolts backwards? Bad Behavior! This shows extreme fear and reluctance to accept new people.
Over Arousal Issues - C an not calm down, Does not know how to control their own behavior
Food/Toy Aggression: Follow same steps listed for puppies, use caution with adult dog.
Destructiveness - Severity can depend on age (furniture, pillows, plants, doors)
By following these suggestions, you will be able to adopt a good dog. Be picky. Do your homework before arriving at the shelter. Take time to test for obvious behavior problems. Let your head and not only your heart decide on which dog is the right one to bring happiness to your home.
Some common behavior problems you may encounter in shelter dogs:
Anxiety/Fear - Noise, bright lights, fear of the unknown, men (if raised by women only), sometimes anxiety/fear can be lack of socialization or even a genetic issue.
Tests that can help you make a wise choice for your home:
These tests are to determine a dogs general friendliness, acceptance of new things (food/toy) aggressions and responses to human interaction.
v Testing Puppies (8 weeks - 4 months) Friendliness: Pick the puppy up, then put her down. Does she run toward you? Yes? Good! Run away? Caution! May show fear/anxiety. Stay at a distance? Caution! This may mean a lack of socialization and fear/anxiety Pick the puppy up again, she wants to be cuddled? Yes, Good! Squirms and struggles to get down? Caution! Shows strong will. Licks your hand? OK, but lets you know in a friendly manner she wants down. Bites your hand? Bad behavior! Not a good dog to adopt. Very intolerant. Should not be placed with children.
Taking your new pet home: Once you take your new pet home, issues may arise even though you have carefully chosen what you think is a good fit for your household. Sadly, some new pet owners do not have the skill and/or patience to work through problems that may arise. The goal is to get off to a good start and prevent problems that could result in the dog being returned to a shelter or rescue. Seeking a reputable, professional trainer can help both you and your dog develop a trusting and mutually satisfying relationship. Mt. Tabor Boarding and Grooming offers several different types of classes for puppies and adult dogs. Their aim is to guide you and your new pet through the adjustments that may be needed to get you on the right path to a long and happy life together! Contact Mt. Tabor Boarding and Grooming at: 336-765-7102, online at: www.mtbdgm.com, or stop by 4138-B Robinhood Rd. Winston-Salem. (See ad on page 41)

Winnie. Hi! Please don’t let my gray face and droopy eyes fool you! I am only 5 years old and a very sweet and happy girl. I love people, going for walks, snuggling, giving kisses and playing with toys. I do not like most dogs so would do best as an only pet. I can be curious and playful, but I’m also mellow and that’s when I just want to sit on your lap. I’m housebroken and crate-trained. All I need now is someone to love. Is that someone you? Love, Winnie
Crested mix, but we have doubts about the Chinese Crested part. She’s one year of age and is a little shy at first but once she gets to know you, she is very affectionate and is starved for attention. She loves to play with the other foster dogs. She is spayed, up-to-date on shots and on heartworm preventative. She is learning to use papers when she cannot go outside, Chihuahua Rescue we are currently working on this. She rides well in the car and does okay on a leash. With a little patience, Lily will make someone a wonderful new member of the family.

Hi, my name is Trudy. I’m a beautiful, 19 lb., 2-1/2 year old female Dachshund/Beagle mix, and I’m ready to spend the rest of my days as your buddy. My owner surrendered my puppies and me to the shelter when she could no longer Almost Home Dachshund Rescue afford to take care of us anymore. Now, I’m living with my foster family full of Dachshund brothers and sisters while I get started on basic obedience commands. My foster mom says I am doing a great job so far. I’m a super-sweet, mild-mannered and social dog and love to snuggle with my humans and canine pals and watch TV. I love going for walks, playing outside and would enjoy having a fenced yard for playtime. I am spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations and microchipped. Special Feature
KING OF THE WILD ROAD By Sarah C. Fulcher
I
n the woods behind my house there is a small path where animals walk. I call it the “wild road,” after a book written by Gabriel King. The wild road is a magical road where only animals can travel. For many years, I have adopted animals that came down the wild road to my house. During the last winter storm, an orange tabby cat showed up. I named him “Sunshine” and put a bed and food out for him in the garage. Sunshine had most likely been abandoned, an outcast, and forced to make a new life for himself. Sunshine learned to parade the wild road along with the cats in the feral colony that had gathered in the woods. The other cats kept their distance from Sunshine, and all stepped aside when he passed. Clearly, Sunshine ruled the trail. Eventually, the day came that almost always dawns for stray and unwanted pets—those that have been abandoned and struggle to survive. Sunshine showed up injured; there was a deep wound and battered face. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. It looked like Sunshine had lost an eye, possibly in a fight. One afternoon the sleet and ice returned. In the winter dusk, Sunshine sat beneath a large oak tree, his head bowed as if contemplating his next move. He sat awhile, then carefully stood up and strode towards the trail. Ascending the trail silently, the soft tufts of his paws plodded across the frozen ground, some unseen force beckoning him on. Sadly, he lifted his head and glanced back at me with his one eye. In that moment, the courage that he showed made me stronger. His ability to endure a solitary life opened a door for me—a moment that seemed mystical, even mythological. Like Sunshine, I thought, we must all face life’s adversities and walk the wild road with purpose. Sunshine climbed the trail and seemed to quicken his stride, as if moving to some new territory, then disappeared into the shimmering ice. This would be his last fight—the king of the wild road.
“The most miraculous of Beasts, it walks invisibly and silently the highways of the Earth, and many believe it invested with the Magick of the World.” “And the greatest of these shall be the Golden Cat. . .it shall have the Power to harness the Sunne and the Moon and the Wild Roads, and may render to any so lucky as to possess it the very Key to knowledge of the Natural World.” Quotes are from William Herringe originally published in The Diminutive Tyger in 1562 and later used in The Wild Road by Gabriel King in 1997.
About the author. . .Sarah C. Fulcher is a long-time resident of Guilford County and has volunteered at the Guilford County Animal Shelter for the past 18 years. Though her passion is now rescuing pets, she once ran the perimeter of the United States for a total of 11,134 miles. Sarah’s run is documented in “Sarah’s Long Run”, available at www.amazon.com. Clarice, 3 years old, came to us via rescue angels after someone saw her in a shelter. She was significantly underweight, heartworm positive, had a skin infection, a swollen wrist and Doberman Rescue of the Triad benign tumors. Clearly she had been badly neglected. At Elijah’s House, however, she is receiving treatment for all her ailments. In little more than a week, she looks like a different dog entirely. A healthy and ample diet has filled her out, antibiotics cleared her skin infection, laser treatments are having a positive effect on the tumors, and heartworm treatments are doing their job. She is house-trained, clean and neat inside, walks well on a leash, and very playful. She loves to meet people and will stand and wait to be petted, sometimes giving kisses in return. about Dillon’s former life, but we suspect he didn’t have much human interaction. He is absolutely starved for human affection. He loves cuddling, playing with other dogs, doing stuff outside and going for long walks. Dillon knows his basic commands, but he does not crate well and needs a companion canine to keep him calm when his people are out and about. Dillon would do well with experienced GSD owners who understand that some guys just need a little more guidance than others.

HAPPY ENDINGS ARE HERE AGAIN. Dogs and cats aren’t just pets; they’re part of the family. But what happens when a family member gets hurt and the medical bills are more than they can afford? That’s what happened to Chloe, Midnight and Titan. These are their stories. Chloe was about 10 months old when blood supply to her bones was interrupted. She received hip surgery so that not only could she walk again but also she could play with her older brother, Brewsir, another Chihuahua. Midnight is a two-year-old cat that slipped out an open door and returned hours later with his left eye out of the socket. This injury was so severe that the vet dropped everything to begin surgery. Thanks to the fast response and high level of care, Midnight is expected to make a full recovery. Titan should have been named “Tank” for how well he survived being hit head-on by a car. Unfortunately, he did sustain a hairline pelvis fracture that required immediate intervention. Titan is now back to full strength with his owner, a disabled U.S. veteran.
by Karen Susalla Fullerton
These are just some of the happy endings that were written thanks to The Sergei Foundation. Since 2009, The Sergei Foundation, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., has been helping families save their companion pets’ lives by providing financial aid to those not able to afford emergency veterinary care. This summer, The Sergei Foundation is presenting The Triad Dog Games at Reynolda Village as a fundraiser to help sick and injured pets. Admission is free, and on-site donations will be matched by a community donor. The Triad Dog Games will feature dogs running, jumping and leaping in a variety of competitions. Come, sit, stay at The Triad Dog Games. To learn more or to donate, visit TriadDogGames.com.
