Hope was found under a shed last November, where she appeared to have been dumped shortly before giving birth to 8 puppies. GSRA was told of her plight and came to the rescue. Since then, all of her puppies have been adopted, but Hope is still patiently waiting for her always family to come along. She is house-trained, crate-trained, good with dogs, loves kids and rides well in the car. Hope is shy in new situations, but very affectionate when she gets to know you. She is looking for a low key family who would like to take some time and bond with her over some basic obedience training, treats and quality cuddling time. Please visit www.gsdrescue.org for more information.

ON THE COVER: Adorable Lolly, a two year old Beagle, won us over with her friendly personality and loving manner. She was picked up as a stray and never redeemed. Testing positive for heartworms created a roadblock to adoptions. She is currently being treated and will be ready for adoption in early December. Typical of the breed, Lolly is a happygo-lucky Beagle that loves playing with other dogs, enjoys being with her humans and lives harmoniously with cats. My birthday is 5/5/14. Some of my favorite things include sniffing around with my brother Frankie and watching the birds outside of the window here at the adoption center. PARVO:
A Deadly Disease Everyone Needs to Know About Imagine if there was a local deadly disease outbreak. The disease causes severe vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Without aggressive treatment, requiring days of intensive care and hospitalization, the disease is almost always fatal, and the best treatment doesn’t always guarantee survival. Believe it or not, this disease is very prevalent in the Triad, state, nation and world. Fortunately, this disease does not affect humans; unfortunately, it affects man’s best friend, the dog. You may have even heard of this disease: the Canine Parvovirus, commonly known as “parvo.” Although there are highly effective vaccines available to prevent this disease, many dogs in the area are still affected by this disease, most of which are puppies that, without treatment, often pass away at only a few months old. Parvo first appeared in the US in 1978. The virus affects both domestic and wild canines (foxes, wolves). The virus is extremely hardy; it is preserved by freezing and is resistant to most household cleaners. An infected dog’s stool contains 35 MILLION of these resilient viral particles per ounce. It is not hard to believe that this virus exists in essentially every environment, especially outdoors. Considering this, attempting to protect your puppy from parvo by simply avoiding exposure is nearly impossible. Once infected with parvo, there is an incubation period of 3 to 7 days before the dog shows symptoms. The virus first enters the lymph nodes where it replicates to large numbers. The virus then travels through the blood to the bone marrow where it destroys cells of the immune system, the same cells which the dog requires to fight off the virus. The last place of attack is the GI tract. Here, the virus destroys the villi of the intestine. The villi are critical to absorbing nutrients; once destroyed, severe vomiting and diarrhea develop. In fact, the intestine becomes so damaged that bloody diarrhea occurs and toxic bacteria from the digestive system enter the bloodstream. Without prompt aggressive treatment, the dog usually passes away from severe dehydration or secondary to toxins from bacteria in the bloodstream. If your dog shows any signs of parvo, such as lethargy, not eating, vomiting, or diarrhea, it should be taken to a veterinarian right away, especially if it is a puppy. The sooner the disease is diagnosed, the sooner treatment can be started, thus increasing chances of survival.
If the veterinarian suspects parvo, they can perform a parvo test to diagnose the disease. If the dog tests positive, it must be started on aggressive treatment immediately. The goal of treatment is to provide supportive care, thus allowing the dog to survive until it can fight off the virus. Since dogs with parvo become severely dehydrated, fluid therapy is a crucial aspect of treatment. The most effective way to give fluids is intravenously, and this requires hospitalization and constant monitoring for as many as to 5 to 7 days. Treatment also includes antibiotic injections to eliminate the bacteria that enter the bloodstream and anti-nausea medications to prevent vomiting. This intensive treatment can cost hundreds up to thousands of dollars, and survival is still not guaranteed, as average survival rates are about 80% with intensive treatment. In order to treat a dog with parvo, a veterinary facility must have a specialized isolation unit to prevent spread of the virus throughout the hospital. If your primary veterinarian does not have an isolation unit at their hospital, they will likely have to refer you to a specialty or emergency clinic that has an isolation unit and offers 24 hour care. Many people cannot go that route due to the expense. In this case, fluids can be given under the skin and the dog can be cared for at home, but very few dogs survive with this conservative treatment. For a vet, the worst part of seeing a dog or puppy pass away from parvo is knowing that it could have been prevented with proper vaccination. Vaccination is imperative to preventing parvo, especially for puppies. The timing of the vaccination is very important. When a puppy is born, it acquires antibodies from its mother’s milk which protects the puppy from catching parvo. However, these antibodies can actually prevent a puppy’s immune system from responding to the parvo vaccine. As the puppy grows, the antibodies gradually wear off and the puppy is then able to respond to the vaccine. Attempting to protect your puppy There is a window of about a week in from parvo by simply avoiding exposure is nearly impossible. which the puppy does not have enough antibodies to be protected from parvo, but yet has enough antibodies to prevent response to the parvo vaccine. Therefore, puppies should have a parvo vaccine starting at 6 to 8 weeks of age, and will need a booster every 2 to 4 weeks until the puppy is at least 14 to 16 weeks of age. Since Parvovirus is essentially everywhere, puppies should avoid public places such as parks, pet shops, and kennels until at least 16 weeks of age. Adult dogs also require vaccination as recommended by your veterinarian. If you get a new puppy or dog, you need to take it to a veterinarian right away. The veterinarian can then develop a parvo vaccination schedule so your new family member can become fully protected from parvo and avoid needless heartbreak. If you would like to schedule a consultation to talk more about parvo or the vaccination process, please contact my office at 336-887-2606 and reference this article. (see our ad on page 10)

Cover Story
One Leg Up! By Melissa Ball, Project Pearl
I
t’s an extremely frustrating epidemic every community faces: unwanted animals and pet overpopulation. Shelters across the United States struggle daily with the volume of discarded animals, community support and relations. In Forsyth County, 9 deputies and 2 animal care officers respond to over 14,000 field services calls each year. At Forsyth County Animal Control, field services are the most critical component of the shelter and as pet owners in our community we have the following responsibilities: keeping our pets current on rabies vaccines, licensing our animals, proper containment, food and shelter. In 22 years of being involved with animal welfare, I have seen many great improvements, yet we still live in a throw away society. Daily intake of strays, owner surrenders, cruelty cases and police confiscations remind us of that. Unfortunately, many people tend to put more focus on pointing fault to the shelter staff instead of searching for ways to help. In 2011 Project Pearl was established to work in partnership with Forsyth County Animal Control, shedding new light on the glorious shelter residents through our groundbreaking Lend a Lens Program. This volunteer effort was designed to help minimize shelter staff’s work by using professional photographers to uniquely capture shelter animals. Our work took off and now hundreds of animal welfare organizations throughout the state and country are capturing the same style we created. By working with the community and introducing volunteers to our shelter, we are slowly changing our community’s perception of how animal shelters operate and what services they provide. County shelters use tax dollars to operate on a fixed budget. At Forsyth County Animal Control, animals that need simple medical care can be treated, but any type of major medical care excludes them from passing

the adoption evaluation. Soon after our organization was formed, we saw a need and rejuvenated the medical foster program. In April 2011, our first medical foster was a puppy named Penny, who needed cherry eye surgery. We scrambled for funds and even subsidized from our own pockets for her surgery. Penny’s surgery was a success, she was adopted soon afterward and our medical foster program was launched. Since Penny, we have helped over 300 dogs and cats and our medical foster program utilizes 63% of our operating budget. Animals that had no hope, now get an amazing gift at life. Routinely I am contacted by FCAC when an animal is in need of medical care that cannot be underwritten by the county. Since December 2012 twenty dogs have entered our foster program because they tested positive for heartworm disease. Emergency surgeries, leg amputations and broken legs, eye removal and Demodectic mange are also very common for our foster program. Although securing suitable foster homes during treatment is essential for recovery, funding is the most challenging and critical component to our program. While the county still has ownership of our foster animals, Project Pearl pays for 100% of the medical costs and in many cases that can easily amount to thousands of dollars. Tally came to Forsyth County Animal Control with a broken leg and although we
November 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
Tally
felt certain her owner would come forward to claim her, no one did. After her official hold time was up, we immediately brought her to our vet to get x-rays and additional medical care. After weighing our surgical options with our veterinarians, we felt Tally’s safest recovery would be to amputate her leg. The day after her forelimb amputation Tally was up and walking and within four days she was actively tracking and busily walking on a leash. Tally is a fabulous Bloodhound that adores head scratches and belly rubs! Apparent signs of a dog that had spent her life breeding, Tally has recently recovered from being spayed. Her ideal home would consist of a knowledgeable Bloodhound owner that understands the requirements of the breed. Holly came to our shelter as a stray, however, testing heartworm positive denied her access
to the adoption program. As the 18th dog in our program to be treated for heartworm, Holly will remain in our foster program for a minimum of three months. Since most fosters have no medical history, prior to extended heartworm treatment, we get our foster animals altered. Working with FCAC, once in adoption, adopters assume the responsibility of keeping dogs that were treated for heartworm on monthly prevention. Birdie was surrendered to FCAC with three other dogs when her owner could no longer properly care for her. She undoubtedly earned her name Birdie because she closely resembled a newborn bird: hairless and frail. A skin scrape confirmed Demodectic mange, a non-contagious skin mite that is treated with daily medication and baths. In order to return to adoptions, dogs must have two back-to-back negative skin scrapes indicating mites are no longer present. Treatment for mange can be very lengthy and dogs can be in foster care for three months to over a year. Generally, the skin is in such fragile condition that altering a dog prior to starting daily treatment is not an option. Murphy also came to our shelter as an unclaimed stray. He was not able to enter the adoption program when he tested positive for heartworm disease. Hundreds of animals each year do not qualify for adoptions because of heartworm disease, which is easily preventable
with monthly medication. Adorable Lolly, our cover, won us over with her friendly personality and loving manner. She was picked up as a stray and never redeemed. Testing positive for heartworms created a roadblock to adoptions. During the next two months she will recover from heartworm treatment in her foster home. Typical of the breed, Lolly is a happy-go-lucky Beagle that loves playing with other dogs, enjoys being with her humans and lives harmoniously with cats. Every day I am humbled by the amazing support the community has given Project Pearl. The generosity of the volunteers and kindness of followers allows our foster program to help dogs, puppies, cats and kittens receive a second chance. As an organization, we are grateful for our partnership with Forsyth County Animal Control which allows us to emphasize the amazing animals waiting for homes at our county shelter. Without our talented professional photographers and dedicated volunteers Project Pearl would not exist. We have an amazing family that functions cohesively. To learn more about Project Pearl, please visit our web page at: projectpearlnc.org or visit us on Facebook. All monetary donations are 100% tax deductible and we are extremely grateful to
Holly our financial supporters that allow us to help give animals one leg up! For more information about our foster dogs, please email us at: projectpearl@triad.rr.com.

CAT CARE HOSPITAL
Correcting Your Cat’s Litterbox Habits Cats have changed little since the first domesticated feline crept out of the woods and into our homes. However, as our life styles have changed so have those of our cats. The majority of cats nowadays live their entire lives safely indoors, greatly increasing their life span. However, their loss of freedom translates into a greater dependence on us, as their caretakers. Paramount among those needs is the litterbox. Behavioral issues relating to the use or, lack thereof, of the litterbox, remain the top reason why cats are surrendered at shelters. The concept of a litterbox would appear to be very simple. All you need is some sort of container, some substrate to absorb the waste material and some way of removing said material. However, a visit to any pet store will reveal a mind-boggling, dazzling array of litterbox pans, litter and all the associated paraphernalia. Unfortunately, the large majority of these products were developed and marketed with people in mind instead of cats.
a few tips for providing the ideal litterbox environment
The rule of thumb for the number of litterboxes is to provide one litterbox per cat plus one extra. This ensures there are sufficient litterboxes for all the cats in the household. Some cats adamantly refuse to use a box if it has already been soiled by another cat. Also place litterboxes at each level of a home. In multi-cat households, some of the more dominant cats will guard access to the litterboxes causing the more timid cats to soil inappropriately elsewhere rather than risk antagonizing the aggressive cat. Older cats with arthritis or medical issues that lead them to urinate more often and in larger volumes need to have quick, easy access to their litterboxes. It is good idea to use the largest litterbox possible that will fit into the space allotted for it. An open, unhooded litterbox is best. Hooded litterboxes reduce the interior space for the cat to maneuver and also trap odors within that small space, hides clumps of urine and feces from view, making it easier to ignore scooping and cleaning out the box. It is critically important to scoop and clean at least once daily, preferably twice. Cats are fastidious creatures and if given a choice will soil in a clean area. Scooping daily encourages the cat to continue using the litterbox. Placement of the litterbox is also key, It is recommended that a litterbox be placed in an area that is quiet and receives little foot traffic.

different types of litter available now is truly astounding
Unfortunately a large number of these litters cater to human sensibilities rather than the cat. A study funded by the Cornell Feline Health Center emphatically proved that the type of litter most preferred by cats is unscented clumps and is very fine and soft to the touch. Clumping litter was vastly preferred over regular, clay litter, is easier to clean and allows all of the waste material to be removed when scooped, leaving the remainder clean. Hopefully these tips will help you establish a litterbox routine that keeps you and your cat coexisting happily. When in doubt about a certain product, discuss it first with your veterinarian before subjecting your cat to changes that may be detrimental to its continued use of its litterbox.

Special Feature
Nala’s Story (as told to and interpreted by) Dianne, Nala’s Mommy
I
don’t remember much about my early life except that there was a warm belly and good food. Life was good back then and I hoped that it would last forever. But alas, that was not to be. Every time new people came to the house, one of my brothers or sisters would disappear. But none of those people wanted me. One day the people in the house took me for a ride in their car. I got all excited. But then they put me out of the car and left. What was I to do? What any sensible puppy would do, I put my nose to the ground and tried to find something good to eat. Problem was that I didn’t know about cars and roads. As I was headed toward a great smell, a car came around the corner and I went rolling into the gutter. All I knew was that my shoulder hurt and I couldn’t move. I don’t know how long I was there, but eventually someone stopped and took me to a shelter. It was warm and there was plenty to eat; so it wasn’t too bad, but my shoulder still hurt. After a few days a lady came and said she wanted to see me. She was nice and played with me; but she was very careful of my leg. I liked her and she said that she would pay for “the surgery.” Whatever that meant. Then she took me home with her. It was a nice house and I had her all to myself. But one day she took me back to the shelter. I was afraid at first that I had done something wrong.
Me and my sister,
But soon I was asleep. When I woke up there was a big plastic cone on my neck and something felt different. Later that day the nice lady came back. I was so glad to see her. I must not have done anything wrong because she took me back to her house. We cuddled a lot. We would play and take walks. People would stop and want to know about me. They thought that I was a sad dog because they always said “poor dog she only has 3 legs” but I was happy and I couldn’t count. But I could do anything any other dog could. After a little while, the nice lady, who I started calling “My Mommy” took me to puppy school. It was fun and I made a lot of new friends. Even learning to sit, stay and come was exciting. I graduated with full honors and from then on whenever we were out in public I loved to show off my good manners. Once again I had a great life and I was very happy. One day Mommy said we were going for a ride in the car. It was a long ride and I fell asleep. When I woke up, we were in the country at a farm where I had never been before. There were lots of little puppies and a little boy and his brother. All I wanted to do was play with the boy but Mommy kept bringing this one little puppy over by me. After awhile the three of us got in the car and left. Why was this puppy here? My life was good and I didn’t need anyone but My Mommy. On the way home the puppy peed on my bed. I knew after that, that things were going to be bad. People wanted to talk to the puppy and they ignored me. When I wanted to sit in Mommy’s lap that puppy would butt in and she even tried to eat my food! So in frustration, I started to dig in the backyard and the funniest thing happened. My Mommy yelled at the Zoe puppy for digging holes.
Nala (me), Dianne, George and Zoe This was fun and the more I dug, the more Mommy yelled at the puppy. But I guess all good things must come to an end because one day Mommy caught me digging. She laughed and said: “Nala, I didn’t think you could dig because you only have one front leg.” Well, I showed everyone that I could do anything that I wanted to do. I can run just as fast as any other dog. Four legs are no better than three. That little puppy grew up to become my best friend and sister, Zoe. I still try to get her in trouble sometimes but Mommy is on to us and we both get yelled at for making messes. I guess that’s why Zoe sometimes sleeps on top of me. But that’s okay xo, because my life is good.

Minnie.
“Skinny Minnie” was a stray in the Chapel Hill area that was finally lured into a horse trailer and delivered to us by the family who found her. She is very, very skinny, but otherwise seems healthy. We believe that she is a Toggenburg cross and approximately 4 years old. She has now been vaccinated and we will get her back to a healthy weight. She is very timid but we will start working on fixing that by offering her lots of treats by hand.
surrendered when their owner had to move and could not take them. They are three years old pot bellied pigs. He has been neutered and she has been spayed. This sweet girl was one of five dogs we rescued from a hoarding situation over Labor Day weekend. She may be a little older but it makes her all that much sweeter, gentler, and agreeable. This girl has aged like fine wine and will suit anyone’s palette. She is in great health (from what we can tell) despite the conditions that she came from. The vet said her check-up was great! Missy was extremely matted. As you can see a trip to the spa will do wonders for a girl. This sweetheart has a new swing in her step and would make an excellent dance partner. She does well with dogs, cats, and humans of all sizes.
her sister Reese. In fact, they could be two peas in a pod. Betty Lou can’t get close enough to you and loves to get attention. However, she is still working on some of her confidence when it comes to asking for affection. Don’t let her lack of confidence fool you because once she knows that you don’t mind her around, she doesn’t leave your side. She does NOT suffer from separation anxiety. She just loves being in a relationship. Betty Lou doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. This sweet girl does fine with dogs, cats, and older considerate children.

Winnie
Heidi
was originally found abandoned on the side of the road in Greensboro. She was a little shy at first but now is the sweetest kitten. She loves to nestle into your neck and just purr away the day. She seems to do well with dogs and other cats. Winnie also didn’t seem fazed by any of the kids that met her. We think she will warm up very quickly with a family willing to give her a little time, space, and peace. It certainly hasn’t taken long for her to win over her foster mom’s heart. Winnie has been vaccinated, spayed, and microchipped so she is ready for her new home.
came to us from a situation of severe neglect with another horse, Hannah. She is a sweet, friendly mare who was obviously treated well at some point in life, but fell on hard times. She enjoys attention and loves to be groomed. Heidi needs to gain 150 - 200 lbs. to be at a healthy weight. She and Hannah are sharing a run-in shed, paddock and pasture in their new foster home and we are re-feeding them slowly and carefully. Heidi is the dominant of the two and claims her feed bucket first. Updates to come as they progress. We’d love to see Heidi and Hannah stay together but will separate them if need be to find them great homes.

Kittens.
Kitten season is winding down but there’s still plenty to go around! This particular litter was found abandoned in a box on the side of the road. They’re now purrfectly happy and healthy awaiting a fur-ever owner. Their strengths are cuddling, playing, and using the litter box! Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n
Snuggles. This dilute calico certainly lives up to her name. Don’t believe us? Come snuggle with her for yourself! She is loaded with love and personality. This fluffy bombshell has a heart of gold that is waiting to melt yours! Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 for more information. n
Pete.
Portia. Snowy white with beautiful green eyes, that is Portia! She doesn’t much care for other cats but lives for human attention! She adores being petted, brushed, and spoiled like the queen that she is. Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 to find out more information. n
Payton
is super playful and interactive! This beautiful Lab/Boxer mix has got beauty and brains! She’s super smart, welltrained, and has a great temperament to be a family dog. She loves other dogs and kids! Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 to find out more information. n
Charlie
This special baby needs a lot of love and attention. Pete was abandoned at our shelter with nothing but a broken heart. Pete came in with a growth of some sort on his hip, possibly a tumor. We are working with local veterinarians and doctors to treat and remove it. This sweet boy just wants to find a little consistency in life again - perhaps with you?
was one of 5 Chihuahuas that the SPCA rescued from an animal hoarder who kept 32 Chihuahuas and 19 cats in a single-wide trailer. Despite the rough start Charlie had to life, he is one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. He and his other Chihuahua buddies are now in excellent care at the SPCA awaiting their fur-ever homes!

My hobbies are running and playing with toys. I can be a little on the dominant side, so if you have another dog at home it would be best if you brought them in to meet me first. ANIMAL ADOPTION & RESCUE FOUNDATION 336.768.7387 / www.aarfanimals.org
Liam
is now about 5-1/2 months old. When he was a 5 week old small black fur-ball, he was spotted falling out from a pickup truck in Walnut Cove. The vet discovered a fractured hip from the fall. Because he was so young he was able to make a full recovery from his traumatic experience! Liam is very, very playful and loves small stuffed animals and his stuffed mice that have a small bell at the end! He plays well with a small dog in the home where he’s being fostered. He is very sweet and loves cuddling up on the couch and napping with you, purring with content. Visit www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process or leave a message at 336-768-7387. n
Ernie.
My name is Ernie. I was bottle fed since I was 2 weeks old after being rescued because my mother was homeless. I am playful, fun and full of life. A TV can hold my interest for an hour. Ceiling fans are one of my favorite things to watch also. I get along well with other cats and was born around 7/5/2010. Come visit me at the AARF House during our adoption fair hours. Visit www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process or leave a message at 336-768-7387. n
Gidget
is lucky to be alive! She was found roaming alongside US52 and heavy traffic. She appears to be a young yellow Lab mix puppy. Gidget is doing well on housebreaking and crate-training. She gets along well with the other dogs in her foster home and is happy to please her foster mom. To meet Gidget, come to a Saturday adoption fair at AARF, 311 Harvey Street, between noon and 3pm or visit www.aarfanimals. org for more information. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within one hour of Winston-Salem. n

Rusty
was born into a hoarding situation but is now safe in a foster home with his “mom”. He loves to cuddle and play. His nickname is Chubs. He’s the largest of a litter of several kittens rescued together. Call 336-768-7387 for more information about Rusty or visit online at www.aarfanimals.org to check out the numerous other kittens available for adoption. n
Echo
is a beautiful six month old full-blooded Maremma Sheepdog who was turned into the Onslow County shelter by a young man being deployed. Echo is fully vaccinated, microchipped, spayed, housebroken and crate-trained. Echo was born deaf so she will not be able to hear danger coming. She is a dog who needs a large place to exercise, definitely not an apartment dog. She will require a fenced yard for exercise purposes. You can meet this beautiful girl at our Saturday adoption fairs between noon and 3pm at 311 Harvey Street in Winston-Salem. Visit www.aarfanimals.org for more information. Due to a home visit being a part of the adoption process she cannot be adopted outside a one hour radius of Winston Salem. n
Bogey
and the rest of his five-some were babies of a stray mama dog (about 30 pounds), and were so happy to be brought into foster care! They were fed well by mom and are now getting all the food they can eat, a warm home and lots of love. Bogey has a balanced temperament and loves to play with the other dogs and cuddle with his foster people. To meet Bogey, come to a Saturday adoption fair at AARF, 311 Harvey Street, between noon and 3pm or visit www.aarfanimals.org for more information. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within one hour of Winston-Salem. n

Sparky is WONDERFUL! This little boy was the apple of his owner’s eye, who sadly passed away leaving Sparky alone. Sparky is a beautiful crisp white with just a touch of tan in some spots. He will certainly melt anyone’s heart. Sparky weighs about 12lbs., is neutered, current on vaccines, microchipped and freshly groomed. Out of Harm’s Way He gets along just fine with another dog and seems to enjoy their company, but he would also be fine as the only dog and doesn’t mind cats at all. A vet reference, two personal references and a home visit will be required. Sparky is being fostered in the Winston Salem area and his new family will need to travel there in order to adopt, however, he may be adopted out of state. I’m not a believer in “fixing” your dog’s behavior, then bringing the end result back to you. Training Your Pet
Teaching Your Dog
IMPULSE CONTROL by Jan Wilson Dog-Gone Fun
I
mpulse control is important for social acceptance, not only for people, but for dogs as well. It is the ability to control emotions, actions and the need for immediate gratification. Imagine having no control over your emotions or actions in a public place! Taking what you want off shelves or pushing others around to be first in line. A dog with no impulse control (jumping, pulling, barking) is not fun to be around - for the handler or the public. A dog needs to learn impulse control by interacting with other dogs and through obedience training and learning the house rules.
FOUNDATION WORK. Impulse or self-control is easier to teach when your dog is just a puppy. The first step is to teach basic obedience commands such as sit, down, coming when called and walking on a leash. Obedience gives your dog a foundation of acceptable behaviors. Training should be done in a low distraction environment, like your living room or kitchen. Once your dog is able to follow commands reliably inside, you may slowly begin to add distractions by training outside. You may start working in the yard, on the sidewalk or a quiet park. When the dog is listening to you, start asking him to perform a command before you reward him. The following exercises reinforce self-control. Your dog must sit and stay while his leash is put on. If he does not sit, the leash may be put away and another attempt is made in a couple of minutes. He must sit and wait at the door before he is released to the backyard. If he does not, the door remains closed. He must sit and wait for the food bowl to be placed on the floor. If he does not, the food is picked back up. Wait patiently and do not give him what he wants until he complies. This will improve his self-control. By delaying the “gratification”, selfcontrol is born. YOUR ROLE. Your behavior as a handler is important to the learning process. Acting in an impatient manner with quick erratic movements and continually nagging the dog will not help. A dog with impulse control problems will easily become excited, and will benefit from calm slow movements. Patience and consistency is key. The dog does not receive what he wants until he “sits”. This may take a minute or two in the beginning. A great exercise to practice self-control can be done in your back yard. Play with your dog and get him excited with a tug toy or a game of fetch. Stop the game abruptly and ask your dog for a sit or a

down. Do not resume the game until the dog performs the command. When he does, begin playing with him again. The reward for quickly relaxing is more play! Practice until the dog is able to obey commands even while he is excited in the presence of something he wants. If your dog likes playing with other dogs, occasionally pull him from a play group and ask for a sit or down. When he is calm, reward him by allowing him to play again. If he cannot successfully stay calm, he is not allowed back with the play group. The situation may be too stimulating. As your dog’s skills improve, start challenging him with longer self-control exercises. Practice down stay positions for an increasing amount of time. Your dog must lie beside you on a mat for 5 minutes at first. Practice until he can lie on the mat for 20 minutes. Start with no other distractions around, so that he can be successful. This exercise can be done while you are reading, relaxing or watching TV. There is a saying, “Don’t just restrain…Train!” With time, patience and effort, your dog can learn to control his impulses and behavior. It is the most important skill to teach, because your dog will be well-mannered and fun to be around.

Animal Reiki
REIKI for Animals by Jenn Martin
F
rom the first moment I opened my eyes on this world I had a dog and a very special connection with animals. Most animals who would bite or be aggressive to everyone else were gentle to me and would even let me touch them. I have had many different careers but deep down there’s always been a huge pull to someday work with and help animals. Two years ago I found my path when I became part of the All Pets Considered staff. They’re a special group of people who have taught me so many amazing things about holistic care for our pets. Before all of this in 2010 I studied and became certified in Reiki healing. Because of my connection with animals, I felt pulled to use these two gifts for their benefit. Now for those of you who don’t already know…what the heck is Reiki? Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. Reiki is a simple, natural, and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. Energy work on your pet can significantly improve training techniques, speed the healing process, and help with anxiety issues of all types. Reiki can help your animal companion by: - Energizing and revitalizing an older animal. - Soothing and calming highly strung, hyperactive, or stressed animals. - Helping to alleviate lethargy and depression.

- Helping with transitions such as moving, introduction to or loss of another pet. - Helping rescued animals adjust to their new surroundings and preparing them for a future in a stable family life. - Providing comfort, relief from pain, fear or anxiety. - Comforting them, and their owner, during the transition from this world to the next (The Rainbow Bridge). A little about me and my “Farmily”. I’m originally from Memphis, TN. I moved to Greensboro, NC in 2006 with my husband, Jeff. Now on to the Farmily… my oldest, Jenkins the rat terrier, is a rescue dog. When we first adopted him, Jenkins had heartworms and extreme separation anxiety. With the help of the rescue and vet the heartworms cleared up, but the anxiety remained. I started Reiki work on him right away and continue to this day. He’s happy and healthy and is noticeably less anxious. I’ve had Cherry Baby since she was a puppy. She’s a Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix. She’s super friendly, never met a stranger, and has BIG dog attitude. Then there’s Walter…my ultimate Reiki baby. Walter is a micro-mini-pig. Pigs are extremely emotional creatures. I like to call them “walking anxiety attacks”. I started Reiki work on Walter the first day I met him. He was very open to it and it even helps with his adrenaline bursts (three year old hissy fit). Reiki is very important to all animal’s health, but remember it takes balance to truly take care of our animals and ourselves the best way possible. I encourage regular vet visits and a healthy nutritional plan (come see me at All Pets Considered)! To find out more please call or text 336-404-4073 or e-mail jmanimalreiki@gmail.com.

Marty is an 11 month old Golden mix, about 40 lbs. He’s a playful puppy who gets along great with other dogs and cats. Marty is a quick learner, has mastered basic commands and is in the process of learning good leash manners. He is very shy with new people, but becomes a great cuddle buddy once they earn his trust. Marty seems happiest when he’s playing with another dog, so if Marty you already have another lively dog, Marty could be a perfect addition to your family! Zoey is a small, 9-month old Golden mix. She’s energetic, full of life and loves to play with other dogs. Zoe’s foster family reports that she is smart and learning commands such as sit, down, stay (kinda) and will usually come when called. Spotlight on Dog Days
Dog Days, Every Day
A
s each one arrived, they looked as though they were showing up for a play date. Tails were wagging, kisses were plentiful. Some sprinted in while others moved a little slower, but one thing was obvious. They all were eager to be there. We spent one recent September morning at Dog Days, a doggie daycare, a concept virtually unheard of until ten or twenty years ago, depending on where you lived. We met with Lonnie Sterling, the owner of Dog Days. THT: After watching several dogs arrive, we could not help but wonder if these dogs form close bonds with their doggie friends. Do they look for their best friends when they enter the play room? LS: My wife and I have a new little puppy, Cookie. On Cookie’s first day here she bonded with a Golden puppy. The two of them were instantly crazy about each other. Cookie’s been here for ten days now and when they see each other, they just go bonkers. They love each other. Dogs are like that. Bailey, an SPCA dog formed a strong bond with Art, a big Bloodhound that came here often until he and his family moved away. Those two loved each other so much. We see it all the time. THT: How did you get started in the doggie daycare business?
Lonnie Sterling, owner of Dog Days. His love for dogs is obvious.
44
LS: My niece opened up a Dog Days in Atlanta around 1999. Most people did not know what Doggie Daycare was in 1999. Therefore, she struggled with the business the first few years. Three years later the business took off. She kept telling my wife and me that we should open up a Dog Days in Greensboro.
November 2014 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
I assured her that Greensboro was not ready for doggie daycare. Then, my wife, Cathy, found this building and they overruled me. We opened in October 2005. THT: What was it like in the early days? LS: When we first opened, most people in this area were not familiar with the concept of doggie daycare. People would come in, some were clients, some just walked in off the street. They would stand two-deep, peering through the inside window which separates our lobby from one of the dog play rooms. There was this little hub, the people just could not believe what they saw. It was constant amusement just watching the people watch the dogs. When we first opened every dog in here had never been in an off-the-leash doggie daycare setting and it was chaos. We had 44 dogs that first Thanksgiving. Now, out of 44 dogs, 42 are already socialized and used to being in a doggie daycare environment. The dogs, themselves, have changed in the last ten years. THT: I bet there are lots of stories. LS: The stories do not stop. One guy dropped off his Husky one morning, he had a hearing to go to and said he should be back by noon. He never came back that day. The next day we got a robo call from an inmate at the Guilford County Detention Center but phones had to be set up to accept the robo calls. Ours was not set up. The calls kept coming day after day. Finally, ten days later, the guy came back to get his dog. He had no money, but we gladly gave him his dog. THT: How about inspiring stories? LS: Several years ago we had a dog named Oscar that used to come to daycare. Oscar had ALS and could walk with the help of a doggie wheelchair. Though we never had a dog in that type of situation, when his owner approached us about bringing Oscar to daycare, we said sure. Oscar was such an important part of his owner’s lives and became such an inspiration to everyone here. He would come every day. Oscar would walk around here with his wheels, then we would take the wheels off and let him rest for a while. He came for about two years after being diagnosed with ALS. Everyone here was uplifted simply by watching Oscar. He had this noble way about him and it was
obvious he loved life. Then there was Chips, the Cocker Spaniel. Chips would come for a groom every six weeks from the time we opened. One day his owner totalled her car in an accident and was not able to drive. Over the next year, I would pick up Chips when he needed to come. Over time, Chips’s owner got to the point where she was not able to take care of Chips. She had him since he was a puppy and he was now about seven or eight years old. She did not know what to do. We put a flyer up to help find a new home and Chips began coming to daycare. People could see Chips in the lobby and on the web cam. Within the first month, someone from the Raleigh area said they had a Cocker and would like to come meet Chips. So they came, they looked at Chips and fell in love right away. Now, Chips has a yacht! We hear all these stories about Chips going out on the yacht and on vacation. We were so worried that Chips would not adjust psychologically. But he is happy and well-adjusted and his original owner is so relieved.
LS: We have a small breed area just for the toy breeds. Then we have the medium size area - we may have some larger dogs in there - maybe because they live with a smaller dog - or maybe they are elderly and have mellowed. Then there is the big dog area. They each have an outside area also. THT: What makes your business unique? LS: Easy. . .it’s the people that work here. We are a stand-alone operation and our employees are the most experienced we have ever had. Our clients also make us unique. We have been really blessed with an incredible group of loyal clients. Because of our location, we have a lot of people from five or six neighborhoods, in addition to those who work at Moses Cone and in Downtown GSO and the surrounding area.
THT: Dog Days frequently features an adoptable dog in their ad in Triad Happy Tails. I remember one named Junie who received a lifetime pass to Dog Days. LS: Junie’s owner moved in to Assisted Living so we took Junie in here at Dog Days while we searched to find her a permanent home. We offered Junie a lifetime pass so her original owner would be able to keep up with Junie via computer, made possible by webcams installed in our play rooms. THT: Dog Days has helped so many dogs find permanent homes. Where do these dogs come from? LS: We currently work with the SPCA and usually have one or two of their dogs here in an effort to help them find homes. They are all spayed/neutered and current on vaccinations, as is every dog that comes here. We give a 20-day daycare pass to all dogs we adopt out. We have worked with other rescues and individuals in the past. In the early days we adopted out 40-plus Jack Russell Terriers in four days, all who were rescued from a puppy mill by a local rescue. We are currently fostering Kringle from the SPCA. He is a magnificent, beautiful Hound dog. I’m sure he will find a home soon. THT: What are the benefits of doggie daycare: LS: We have a paint crew in our other business. They were on a job site and told us about a puppy they had been feeding next door to where they were working, that it did not look like it belonged to anybody. That was all my wife, Cathy, needed to hear! Since Cathy was six years old, she would come home with strays and this was no different. We took the puppy in and she was driving us crazy. But, finally, she got her last round of shots, so we could bring her here to Dog Days. It made a huge difference- she does not chew up as much, she was completely potty trained in just 10 days after coming here. She comes home and she sleeps. . .she sleeps in the bed with us without being frantic. She is much happier. Dogs are pack animals and come alive with the other dogs.
THT: What services does Dog Days offer: LS: We offer grooming, daycare, boarding, pick up/delivery and training, and also give dogs walks. We walk the dogs that are boarding for longer periods of time, and others who we feel would benefit from a walk. Daycare is offered every day, including Sundays! THT: How can people find out more about Dog Days? LS: You can visit us online at www.DogDaysGreensboro.com and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/dogdays.greensboro. Or you can contact us at 336-272-1620. We also have a newsletter you can subscribe to by emailing info@dogdaysgreensboro.com. Remember the first day is always free for first-time visitors. Come visit!

THT: What has working around dogs taught you? LS: The stereotypes are wrong. . .I’m referring to the “bad breeds”. The Pits are just as sweet as the Goldens. We have never had a bad Rottweiller. Some dogs are goofy, some dogs are intimidated, some are laid back. Most dogs like playing in the water, not just Labs. I realized all the preconceived notions I had were wrong. THT: Does Dog Days take all sizes?

Southwest Park Dog Park – THE BEST KEPT SECRET by Bob Slone
L
ocated south of Greensboro, east of High Point, midway between I-85 and US 220 is a terrific “jewel” for all to enjoy. Amazingly, practically no one knows about it. The park itself is a 513 acre property owned and operated by Guilford County in conjunction with Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority. But it’s the Dog Park that is its best kept secret. Southwest Park opened in 2009 and I have been taking my dogs there almost every other weekend since they opened (closed during January and February). I can say, without reservation, it is the best dog park around, not only because of the quality of the dogs but also responsibleness of the pet owners. This is not a place where adults come for socializing, disregarding their pets. It is a place where the dogs can run and

In the last four years I have seen them all, Golden Retrievers, Pit Bulls, Boxers, Chiweenees, Beagles, you name it. Even though there is a separate area for both small and large dogs, for the most part they intermingle with no problems whatsoever. Going south out of Greensboro on Groometown Road it is only one turn and you drive directly into the park. From High Point going east on Kivett Drive it is just one turn and you are in the park. Some dog parks seem to be located a mile away from parking, not here. The walk from the parking lot to the bark area is about 100 yards through one of the many trails within the park itself. That’s important for us older folks. Plenty of water, separate areas for small and large dogs and receptacles for dis-
The park is located at 6309 Southwest Park Drive, Greensboro, NC. (use 3403 Wall Road for GPS purposes). posal of dog waste are nearby. You don’t even have to bring any toys as there are always some tennis balls and Frisbees lying around. After your dog wears itself out you then take a leisurely walk along over two miles of trails that wind around the ball fields, past the Audubon Lookout and down to the boat ramp on Randleman Lake. Trails are expertly marked on the trees and if an emergency occurs, help is just a call away. It is suggested that you take a trail map with you which is available at the park office.

Putty is a beautiful, loving 3 year old Doberboy who came to us along with Shearer, possibly his mother. They came from some sort of wretched backyard breeder situation. Putty had intestinal worms, probably the primary reason for his emaciated condition. He is a lovely, sweet boy who loves to play and prance around; he play bows, he clacks his teeth and does that unusual toothy grin when greeting, and it’s all just love and goodwill. He’s super friendly, good on a leash, jumps Doberman Rescue into and out of the SUV without difficulty, rides well and is clean and house-trained. of the Triad Make an appointment to meet him after your application is accepted and come see for yourself what a precious gem he is.

Mac's Stratsbury, affectionately known as Barry, is a big handsome boy. At 2-½ years old, he is strong and enthusiastic in his greetings, but he is all love after he calms down. He has a smooth red and white coat and very expressive ears. He would do best in a home with older children and no small animals. He wasn’t much of a winner at the track, Greyhound Friends of NC having lost 45 races, but he will win your heart if you give him the chance. Barry will make a very nice and exuberant best friend For more information, call Blanche Fedor at 336-601-7810, or email greytvolunteer@earthlink.net or visit the Greyhound Friends of North Carolina website, www.greyhoundfriends.com. n
Titus is a six year old male Yorkie with a beautiful coat. He is very friendly and well-behaved, and loves to go for walks and car rides! Titus loves to play and gets along with everyone he meets.
