FROM THE EDITORS
W
e are excited to participate in Bark for Life this month in Greensboro on Saturday, November 10th. This will be our third year attending this wonderful event which helps to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. In addition to the Bark Walk around Country Park, there are lots of fun games, contests and activities that the entire family will enjoy, including your four-legged best friend! Have you ever been told your dog resembles you? If you answered yes, then come on out and enter the Owner Look Alike contest. Check out all the details on their website at www.relayforlife.org/barkgsoNC, then click on Event Details to see the time frame for the various activities. Registration begins at 9am and opening ceremonies begin at 10am. We hope to see you on November 10th! Our cover story this month discusses adopting middle-aged to older dogs, a topic that is dear to our hearts. Upon visiting our local shelters you will find many older animals that have been surrendered due to no fault of their own. Middle-aged and older dogs and cats can make wonderful companions and are likely to be much calmer and have developed their personalities, so you know what you are getting. Before you adopt, consider how much time you will have to spend with your pet and also consider your lifestyle. Puppies are great for some lifestyles, while
older dogs will work better for others. Read more on this topic in our cover story on pages 10 and 11. Do you know how Deb Printup Jennifer Frazier smart your dog or cat really is? Kim Vaughn, owner of Ruff Housing Doggie Daycare & Lodging in Winston-Salem, has written an interesting article on this topic. Our pets are probably much smarter than we give them credit for and many even have a large vocabulary! Read more on page 46 and go online to take a fun quiz for your pet! Our Ask the Vet this month, by Doctor Cecilia Ho, refers to feline stress. As usual we appreciate our local veterinarians taking the time and effort to provide valuable information to our readers.
Happy Thanksgiving to all our friends! Remember those less fortunate.

Stem Cell Therapy Changed My Life Hello. I’m Riot, an eight year-old Corgi. I can’t believe it’s been a whole year since Dr. Christine E. Hunt, along with my mom, Dr. Catherine M. Markijohn, started
their Adult Stem Cell Therapy with me! I used to hurt all the time and I was always on medications to treat my pain, but they made me sleepy. One week after my stem cell treatment,
I was kicking my feet up. A month later, I was able to play with my brother at home, which I’d never felt well enough to do before. Three months later, I was off almost all of my pain meds for the first time in over five years. Now I only have two or three days a month when I need a pill or two, as opposed to six to ten every day. And I love going to the park to play! In the past year, the staff at University Animal Hospital has helped many other pets with this cutting edge technology. Daffy, a yellow Labrador, was only 14 months old and suffering from severe elbow dysplasia and degenerative joint disease, but a month after her stem cell therapy, she was running around in her back yard.
Jake, a beagle mix, felt so much better after his stem cell therapy for his torn knee ligament. Baby Betsy, a Papillon with immune mediated polyarthritis, was painfree! A long-haired Chihuahua named Lola, who was suffering from severe back pain, had stem cell therapy a week ago and she’s already feeling much better! Call to see if we can help your pet feel better and live a happier life.

One-Pound Force of Life by Jennifer McCollum
I
vy is a normal kitten. Watch her play, this black and white streak zigging and zagging with reckless joy, then suddenly, as if a switch were flipped, fall into an intense slumber atop her toys, and you’ll see what I’m saying. Watch Ivy crabwalk with her tail fur spiked out twice its normal size and hear her spit at imaginary playmates, and you’ll see how normal she is. When you feel her stretch and purr, warm after snoozing snug on your shoulder, you’ll understand that she’s a normal kitten with some serious quality of life. But Ivy is also special. She has very limited vision in one eye. The other eye isn’t viable and must be removed. Her near-blindness could be the handiwork of worms, which can destroy optic nerves, or the result of a vicious untreated upperrespiratory infection – conditions so easily and inexpensively preventable. Both of Ivy’s eyelids are malformed, either from birth or an encounter with maggots a few weeks after birth. The delicate lashes from her “limited vision” eye will need to be removed, since they rest on the pupil. Over time these lashes, if not removed, can become like a sandy contact lens forever fixed on the pupil, causing great discomfort, more ulceration, and eventual loss of sight. Finally, according to her vet, Ivy has a mild case of cerebellar hypoplasia (CH). Many CH kittens are deemed unadoptable and euthanized with a lethal injection of pentobarbital. Or, if they have the bad luck of being born stray in counties that still use the archaic “gas chamber,” they are killed by asphyxiation via carbon monoxide. This is as unnecessary as it is unacceptable, because these cats are emphatically not unwanted. Folks who have found themselves in irrevocable love with CH kittens have been
8
speaking out recently, educating us, telling us that cats with cerebellar hypoplasia live pain-free lives and effortlessly adapt to their environments. They wobble and can seem goofy, yes, but they can be just as clever and beautiful as non-CH cats. Their CH symptoms never worsen, they do not transmit distemper to other cats, and they live normal life spans. Blind cats in a loving indoor environment live normal life spans, too. They compensate expertly with their whiskers, sense of smell, and by feeling with their paw pads vibrations barely detectable to us. Ivy is curious and spunky. Now that she’s past a critical point when her life hung in the balance, she presents no great challenges for her caretaker. She eats on her own, climbs into her litterbox on her own, grooms herself, and, like all respectable kittens, tells her caretaker when to wake up, when to play, when to snuggle, and so on. Near-blindness and mild CH doesn’t keep this kitten down. She leaps from toy to toy with sheer abandon. She sleeps with a blind trust that she will wake up to play again. You can see Ivy on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =qNTAca8DXis&feature=channel&list=UL
November 2012 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
Feral Cat Assistance Program (FCAP), an established 501(c) nonprofit in Greensboro, has agreed to raise funds through its Miracle Fund for Ivy’s eye surgeries. FCAP counts on the generosity of the community to make these surgeries happen – they’re not optional and have to happen soon. Every day that Ivy must endure steroidal eye drops to maintain a normalish pressure in her eye, which right now looks like a full moon rising in a night sky that can barely contain it, is one day too many. Every day her eyelashes rub into her pupils like gritty contacts is one day too many – and another day toward perhaps total blindness. If given the chance, Ivy, once well, will provide some lucky person a lifetime of affection, loyalty, and laughter. Please give her the chance. Donate today to FCAP’s Miracle Fund at www.feralcatassistance.org. When I agreed to foster a sick kitten for two weeks, two weeks that became more, I had no idea what I would learn, even after two decades of rescue. A one-pound force of life gave me a fresh respect for spirit, a renewed humility for the struggle to survive, and an understanding that with a little adaptability, “problems” will be overcome.

Loving Pet Inn Adoptions The Best Dog Ever
A
re You Searching Penny for The Best Dog Ever? Some time in their lives, most dog lovers have gazed into the eyes of one of their pets and suddenly become overwhelmed with feelings of adoration and awe. You probably knew that your dog was pretty special but then, at a certain point in its life, you realize it has become your perfect dog, the best dog ever! Maybe it is the total understanding you share, the way he seems to know exactly what you are thinking and what you want, how he can anticipate what you will do next. Maybe it is the way he behaves in public one day, being so polite and wellmannered that you are bursting with pride and feel like you are reaping all the rewards of years of training. Maybe it is just the way he comes over to snuggle with you on the sofa, resting his gentle head on your lap with total confidence in your mutual love and gazing up at you like you are the sun and the moon and the stars all rolled into one. Whenever that moment comes, we are amazed that I can almost guarantee that when people the wonderful creature that is talk about their best dog ever, they are our dog, the animal that started out life so thinking of that dog in its middle and needy, uncertain, hyperactive, unmannerly, older years, after it has matured beyond its and with annoying behaviors that may have youth and early adulthood and learned so taken years to train away, has become a quiet much about life and people. While puppies source of gentle and faithful companionship. are adorable and young dogs are fun and This same animal is now a well-behaved energetic, they can be exhausting and test and undemanding citizen with simple your patience and training skills over and needs who only seeks to please and to share over again. If you want to get that incredibly unconditional love with you.

satisfying best dog ever! feeling without spending years of hard work waiting for a pup to grow up and settle down, all you need to do is adopt one of the fabulous mature dogs that linger in shelters all over the country. These wonderful middle-aged and senior dogs with flecks of grey in their muzzles wait patiently for new homes while adopters snap up fluffy, bouncy young pups who are delightful but still need lots of training and time. Are you searching for a great companion who is playful but loves naps just as much as play? Do you want a dog who will rest with you when you are tired, be satisfied with simple neighborhood walks, get along well with people and dogs since they are confident and calm, a dog who is easily satisfied with just a soft bed, a loving hand and good food? Do you want a dog that is good on the leash and well-behaved enough to take just about anywhere? Do you want a dog who will adapt to its new home with you so easily you will think it was always part of the family? Think about adopting a dog who has experienced life and gained wisdom, a dog that has its priorities in order. Adopting a middle-aged or senior dog is also a great idea if you long for companionship but aren’t ready for the possible 15 year or so commitment that you would need to make when adopting a young puppy. Sometimes we yearn for the companionship of a pet, but are uncertain what our own lives or health will be like a

decade or more down the road. If your own health is failing yet you are feeling lonely, adopting an older senior dog is a great idea. Elderly dogs are often only looking for comfort and companionship, just like us, and it doesn’t make sense for a person in their late 70s or 80s to adopt a puppy who may end up homeless if the owner passes away. A delightfully middle-aged dog will give you many years of companionship and enrich your life so much, and if you are a middleaged person, it is usually a match made in heaven. We middle-aged folks may not have the energy, time or desire to keep up with puppy antics. A middle-aged dog is still a fabulous walking companion and definitely a social comfort. They are generally still healthy and fit and just as much fun as a younger dog, but are so much easier to live with and take care of. Plus, by the time a dog has reached its middle years, its personality is fairly well established so you can carefully select one with the characteristics you desire. When you adopt a tiny puppy, you really have no idea what type of quirky personality traits it may develop as it grows up. The next time you are ready to adopt a dog, please consider your lifestyle and what you want in a companion. If you decide you’d prefer an easier, more ready-made dog, go meet some of the many charming and wellmannered mature ones. Don’t let hearing that a dog is seven or older scare you away. Many dogs that age, especially smaller ones, have half their lives left to live and are still quite playful and fun. Would you reject a human friend who had just turned 40, fearing that they might die too soon? Would you refuse to love your mother or grandmother because she had a little arthritis and grey hair? Of course not! Mature dogs are so precious and deserve to be cherished in a happy home. They tend to be so very appreciative of a new loving home and their devotion to you, their rescuer, can be immeasurable. Won’t you open your heart and home to one? It may turn out to be your Best Dog Ever! All the dogs featured in this article are for available for adoption and be sure to check out our entire selection at www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org. Also, when you are surfing www.petfinder.com, be sure to check out the wonderful “adult” and “senior” category dogs so you won’t miss one that could be your best dog ever!
Penny, Chance, Bogie, Mindy & Nikki are all available for adoption through Loving Pet Inn Adoptions. Call 336-393-0000 if you are interested in offering a loving home to any of these precious pets. Gwendolyn.
Cecily. Hi my name
Hi my name is Gwendolyn. I am 4-1/2 months old. My siblings and I were found living under a shed with our mom. The kind people of HSAC took us in. I am living with my sister Cecily in a foster home. I love playing with my sister, and also love toys and food, especially the food. Hey - I’m a growing girl. I’m looking for a forever home without other young kittens (except maybe my sibling Cecily!) or older cats but I just know that my new home is out there waiting for me!
is Cecily. I am 4-1/2 months old. My siblings and I were found living under a shed with our Mom. The kind people of HSAC took us in. I am in a foster home with my sister Gwendolyn. I love playing with my sister. I love toys and tearing around the room - just what us kittens love to do. Then we sleep. I also love water - I have been known to join my foster folks in the shower - I love to watch the water go down the drain. I am hoping to find a home of my own soon, and am looking for a family without other kittens or older cats - although I’d love to have my sister Gwendolyn come along with me!

were born in the spring of 2012 under a shed and were in need of medical attention when HSAC volunteers rescued us. We are now healthy, loving and energetic. Because of a factor from our “under the shed lives”, we need homes that do not include a young kitten or senior cat. The HSAC is committed to finding us the perfect homes and we know they are out there waiting for us. Please contact the HSAC to find out more about our story.
Looking for a family seeking a fun and friendly challenge. I am house-broken and do my business outdoors, never inside. I adore being outside in a large fenced-in yard. Currently, I share the dog lot with other dogs but it took me a little while to adjust to the company. It’s ok for now...but at first it was a little overwhelming if you want to be top dog, or maybe share the glory with one other dog. Some of my passions are hiking, eating and lounging in the yard. I’m 8 years old and I love kids, although smaller ones sometimes get knocked over by my affection.

Cecilia Ho, DVM
Dr. Ho is a graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. She decided to specialize in feline medicine two years into private practice as she found feline medicine to be more challenging and rewarding. Q A
Relieving Feline Stress
Two of my four cats are constantly fighting and one of the remaining two cats is urinating inappropriately. Could stress cause these behaviors and if so, how can I fix it?
Stress can play a large role in the cause for these behaviors. Firstly, make sure your cats are examined by a veterinarian to ensure that there are no medical reasons for these behaviors. If there are none and stress seems to be a contributing factor, there are several things that can be done to achieve a happier household. Keep in mind that modern living has led many owners to keep their cats indoors, thereby forcing some cats to live in close proximity to each other. Tension arises when there is competition for personal space, access to food, shelter/protected area to sleep and rest, the toilet/litter box and affection from owners. One of the simplest things that you can do is to use a Feliway plug-in diffuser. This is a product that releases a pheromone which helps calm cats. It is also available in a spray bottle and as wipes. One diffuser will cover 650 sq. ft and it is usually placed in an area where the stressed cats spend most of their time. Humans are usually unable to catch the scent though some sensitive individuals may detect a slight scent. The pheromone that is released will help calm most cats without sedating them. There are several different brands available at pet stores but Feliway is the only brand that is available through veterinarians. You may also try several naturally-derived anti-anxiety products. These are products that are formulated with natural ingredients and do not contain any anti-anxiety medications. Two of the most commonly used products are Anxitane and Feline Composure. Anxitane comes as a chewable tablet that is readily accepted by cats and Feline Composure comes in the form of a treat. These products do not act as sedatives but instead help to calm cats naturally. Each cat may respond in varying degrees and it is very important that you discuss any dosing changes with your veterinarian before doing so.
If you have a large number of cats or are having difficulty getting your cat to take either the Anxitane or the Feline Composure treat, you may consider feeding the Calm diet from the Royal Canin food company. This diet is formulated with a protein derived from milk, the amino acid L-tryptophan (the famous sleep-inducing protein after a Thanksgiving meal) and Vitamin B3. All of these ingredients have been shown to have relaxing and anti-anxiety effects. The diet appears to be readily accepted and is designed for cats and small dogs. Naturally, you should discuss any dietary changes with your veterinarian before doing so especially if your cat has strict dietary requirements for certain medical conditions. Finally you may want to consider environmental enrichment techniques. These include simple things that you can do for your cats that will help make their days more stimulating and interesting. A good source for a list of these things can be found from the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) website. You may also consider building an outdoor enclosure so your cats can safely be outside. There are several companies that provide different styles of outdoor enclosures. One of these is the Purrfect Fence company and another is Catio Showcase (their website is CatioShowcase.com). Hopefully, by formulating a plan with your veterinarian that may include some or all of the recommendations listed above, you will once again achieve peace and harmony among the cats in your household.

Clarice
White Sox
is a young mom -- she’s probably less than a year old but is a devoted mother to her 5 kittens. She was rescued from the Forsyth Co. Animal Shelter with her kittens and has been in foster care in a household with cats and dogs. The kittens are almost ready to be placed in forever homes, but we don’t want to forget about Clarice. She will be spayed as soon as the kittens are fully weaned and ready for a new home.
was born to a feral mother around July 4, 2012. She and her sister, Itsy, were snatched from their mother when they were 7 weeks old. Mom was very unhappy about this. White Sox loves to be carried around. She is a beautiful gray and black tabby kitten with white paws and a white chest. Both babies get along well with older cats and they love each other. It would be wonderful if they get to stay together.

Salem
Twinkle's person
is a handsome silver and white boy. Check out his “soul patch”. He and his siblings and foster siblings are in a “group home” -- the result of four pregnant cats being abandoned in a neighborhood. They are being cared for (and well socialized) by their foster family, but now it’s time for them to have forever homes. Contact us for more information.
is pregnant and because she is so loyal to her person, she may be jealous of the baby. As you can see from Twinkle’s picture she is quite beautiful. This is what her person has to say about her: “Twinkle is a very sweet cat. She can be lazy but at times loves to play. She likes to play with hair ties and steals them from me :) She is an indoor cat only and is declawed in the front but not back. Twinkle needs to be the only animal in the house, she doesn’t do good with other animals. Twinkle loves people and children and wants a loving home.”

Sophie.
Gabby. I was
Petite, delicate, and “oh-so-loving” would best describe this Manx beauty. Sophie was rescued from the shelter, having given birth prematurely to her kittens, only one of which survived. She showed gracious affection from the beginning, which has only continued to grow. Her breed is called Cymric, which is a longhaired Manx. Sophie loves to watch TV and will sit gazing at the screen with intent curiosity, mesmerized by the antics of other cats and kittens on Animal Planet! A bit shy to newcomers, she will soon steal your heart with her intense nuzzling purr and her sweet eyes.
brought to my foster mom at her office after taking a ride in a fan belt--that was not as fun as it sounds! I was really scared & everyone thought I might always be that way but I have come out of my shell in a big way. I love to play with the big cats & I’m so sweet that they lick all over me. I love to sit on my foster mom’s shoulder & press my face against her cheek. I dare you to find a sweeter baby girl than me!

Meet Pearl!
Born March 2004, Pearl is a pretty stumpy Manx who wound up in a hoarding situation and didn’t have much close interaction with people. She’s sweet and loves to be petted, but is easily startled and would do best in a quiet household. She adores snuggling on the couch and is starting to allow strangers to pet her. She’s not fond of being picked up and restrained, though. While excellent with some friendly cats, she can be a bit strong-willed for timid ones. Pearl is vaccinated, vetted, wormed, spayed, microchipped and FeLV/FIV negative.

Gromit
The only owner Sugar has known passed away and now Sugar has to be re-homed. Sugar was born in June of 2006 and has always lived in a very quiet, low key, home. This is what we are committed to finding for her. Sugar is an indoor lap dog. She weighs in at about 15 lbs, has been spayed and is fully vaccinated. She gets along fine with other small quiet dogs. Sugar is a little shy when you first meet her, however, she warms up quickly. Sugar is a Pomeranian mix. No children please as Sugar is not used to their energy level and would not thrive in an active home.
is Wallace’s pet dog and also is generally more intelligent than Wallace. His birthday is in February. He likes knitting, playing chess, reading the newspaper and cooking. His prized possessions include his alarm clock, bone, brush, and a framed photo of himself with Wallace. Our Gromit was also born in February of this year and he is one smart boy too! Gromit is a Boxer mix with a very endearing personality. He loves to play and is a seasoned expert on using his doggie door. Gromit loves people, dogs and cats. Gromit is neutered and fully vaccinated. Come meet Gromit today!

Diego
Petey.
and sister Dora, were found in a dog lover’s carport underneath her car. Not having ever had cats, the woman panicked a little until a friend calmed her down. Three days went by and no homes could be found. Their fear was that both kittens would end up at the local shelter. Lucky for Dora and Diego we had room for both kittens at our adoption center. Sweet does not begin to describe Diego. He is your typical loving male kitty, plays well with others, and purrs on touch:) Diego is now neutered and fully vaccinated as well as negative for feline diseases. This healthy lover is now waiting for his forever home. Could you be right for him? Born around April 1st, 2012, Diego is no fool!
Born in mid June 2012 on a hot summer day, this little boy joined the world ready to play! Petey is a little rascal that is the life of every party. He likes to play with his fleece toys and really loves to climb on the bigger dogs in the house as though they are his personal jungle gym. Petey is an explorer and investigator, however when he is tired he finds his foster mom to snuggle with. Petey is looking for a fun loving home that will make him a forever family member. Petey is ready for you to inquire about him today.

“I try to capture the personality of the pet. I love to use color and movement in my paintings. I paint on wood, doing a box-style. This makes a folksy frame so there’s no need to frame your painting. I use several layers of U.V. protective clear-coat. All of my paintings are sturdy and individualized to my client’s desire. I work from photos and/or digital images. From time-to-time I meet the pet. I like for my clients to think of things like color, size, background ideas and pet-personality. Dory
and her 4 siblings were born in July 2012 to a social mom cat that lived in a colony of feral cats. She is an outgoing kitty, described by her foster mom as “flirty and very curious.” Exploring is in her blood and even though you might find this little girl someplace she shouldn’t be, you can’t be mad at her because she is just too cute. In addition to exploring, being held and just hanging out with her foster family are her favorite things. Call 378-0878 if you are interested in giving Dory a loving home. n
Grayson
is one of Dory’s siblings currently available for adoption, along with their mom, Peggy Sue. As you can see, he is as cute as can be! Grayson is a resourceful kitty and he spends lots of time finding things to play with all on his own. He is a sweet little boy and about as curious as any kitten can be. Running around like crazy after a laser light is just the best thing in Grayson’s book! Please call 378-0878 if you are interested in giving Grayson a loving home. n
Peggy Sue.
Cashew
This beautiful girl was rescued from a feral colony in Thomasville after having lived outside her entire life. She is the mom of kittens Dory and Grayson, as well as three other little kittens who are also available for adoption. Peggy Sue was born in March of 2011 without a right foot, but amazingly is able to get around much like any 4 footed cat. Things are still very new to Peggy Sue, so she can be somewhat shy at first. She has learned the joys of being rubbed and scratched under her chin. Chasing a laser light and playing with strings are some things she really enjoys doing with her foster family. Peggy Sue will make someone a very loving and affectionate cat.
has come a long way since being rescued with his four siblings after living in an old shed in a park. This adorable boy has gone from a very quiet kitten to a playful one who loves to run around like crazy with his brother, chasing balls and toy mice. He tries to sneak in a climb now and then. Born in May of 2012, he is a loving and affectionate little guy who loves to cuddle and get back rubs. Being held like a baby makes him a happy little boy. He and his brother Liam are ready to find their fur-ever homes.

Liam,
born in May of 2012, has been described as the calm and mature one of the five kittens rescued from a feral colony in a park where they had been living in a shed. While this incredibly cute boy still loves a good belly rub and a cuddle, his absolute favorite pastime at the moment is playing rough and tumble with his brother Cashew, also available for adoption. The two of them will run around tirelessly, batting at toys and pouncing on each other in the process. When they’ve had enough, they will snuggle up together for a nice catnap. Rose Petal.
Rose Petal’s life has been one of change. As a tiny kitten, she climbed under the hood of a car, which resulted in the loss of one of her back legs. Sadly, this precious girl lost two previous families, through no fault of her own; one due to financial hard times and another due to a relocation. She loves playing with her cat toys and has an incredible zest for life. She can be affectionate and cuddly at times, and at others just wants to play with her other kitty friends. She likes other cats and dogs that are cat-friendly. She is used to children since she lived with them in her previous family. This sweet girl is more than ready to find her real “fur-ever” home. Call 378-0878 if you are interested in giving Rose Petal a loving “fur-ever” home. n

Misty. If you are looking
Baxter
for that companion cat who comes when called, loves a lap, can be carried around and has the biggest purr, then Misty is your girl! She wandered up to a local manufacturing plant, sadly thin yet full of love and conversation. The employees knew she was a keeper, but no one could take her in, so they called Red Dog Farm. Misty has had her vaccines, is spayed and microchipped. You can visit her at All Pets Considered on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro.
came to Red Dog Farm when his owners found out they were unable to keep him. He is a happy-golucky puppy who aims to please but still needs to learn a few of his manners. However, Baxter is becoming a quick learner and already knows, “sit”, “bed”, “down” and his favorite word “supper”. He is your typical rambunctious, goofy puppy and has a great personality. He loves to play ball and go for car rides. He gets along well with other dogs and loves to play. Baxter is up-to-date on his vaccines, microchipped, and neutered so he is ready to go to his forever home.

Ms. Parker came
Sheena
to Red Dog Farm after being found as a stray. Domesticated rabbits do not make the transition to the wild so Ms. Parker was very fortunate to find a rescuer who realized she was not meant to be outside. She was used to being handled at some point, but needs a little bit of a refresher. She hasn’t been held very much and is a little jumpy when you first pick her up, but her confidence is growing each and every day with us. She enjoys snacking on her fresh veggies and hay and loves to play with sticks and chew toys. If you are an experienced bunny owner, then Parker is the girl for you.
has taken over the Red Dog Farm office. In fact, she is pretty sure she can figure out how to work the funny phone contraption on our staff’s desks. In the meantime however, she greets the general public when they come by the office, inspects the foster birds to make sure they can still see and fly, and keeps us all on a strict feeding schedule so as not to miss a meal herself. She would love to go to her new home and promises to warm your desk as you work. She does well with other cats and doesn’t mind the doggie employees either.

Buddy & Addison.
Marigold
Buddy is a 4 year old miniature horse and is very tame and friendly. “Addison” is 11 years old and came to us from a hoarding situation in Thomasville. Now that Addison and Buddy have both been vaccinated and gelded, we combined them in the same pasture. They were instant friends and ran a huge “victory lap” as if to celebrate. Then they settled right in and grazed side by side. We would love to see them be adopted together. Both came from terrible situations and they are happy now! Addison is still shy, but Buddy is very tame. We hope that he will convince Addison that humans are okay.
was originally found abandoned outside an Animal Hospital. She was then adopted but her new owners quickly learned they were allergic to her and could no longer care for her. She is a very sweet rabbit and loves to hop around and be petted. She enjoys snacking on her fresh veggies and hay and loves to play with sticks and chew toys. She would make a good pet for any home.

Fluff came to us
Mama. We have had Mama
in March as a stray. He was just too gentle and sweet to release as a feral so we held on to him. He is a younger adult cat, probaby around 2 years old, and HUGE. He weighs at least 15 pounds and he is a beautiful buff color. Fluff is very friendly, picky about his animal friends but does get along with some other animals. He loves to tell you about his day, and whats on his mind, will follow you around like a small dog, will take every ounce of affection you are willing to give him. Often times, he just wants to lay next to you, or in the same vicinity. Fluff is waiting patiently for a family to call his own. Come by and meet him.
since October of last year. She was found in an abandoned house and was very feral at first, but she certainly has come around. Mama follows everyone now, and wants all the love you can give her. Its hard to believe that she was ever skittish. Mama has been at our adoption center longer than any other animal that is currently here. Though we do our best to keep her happy and will be sad to see her go, the center has been stressful for her. Due to that stress, she has struggled with hair loss on her sides and back legs. Mama is waiting to have her own place, and we think it would be hard not to fall for her if you met her.

Ham
Delilah
came from the Gaston County Animal Shelter where he was on death row and scheduled for euthanasia. We rescued him in the nick of time. Ham likes to be boss with other animals but gets along with everyone that respects this. Ham is very beautiful and has long hair on the tips of his ears and a very inquisitive expression. He is very, very smart, curious, and fearless. Ham is pretty active and would love to be in a home with lots of toys and things to get into.
can’t seem to catch a break. She came to us from another shelter. They were going to gas her despite her disposition because of her severe case of heartworm disease. After meeting her, we decided she was worth every penny it would cost. Since her arrival she has broken her leg, and incurred various other injuries... and she is still worth every penny. Delilah has had it rough, and for whatever reason, it keeps coming. She looks forward to her calm, consistent forever home where she can rest her heart and body. Delilah is a very sweet bull dog mix and can be a little timid at first but we can’t blame her. She warms right up with a little loving, some treats, and encouragement.

Crusoe
came to us almost a year ago. He had been left in a yard, abandoned and chained. When we rescued him he had open lacerations all over his body, he was emaciated, and covered in burns and scars. Crusoe loves people, can be a little scared of men at first, but warms up after a little while if you are kind and consistent. He plays well with most other dogs and children but pulls a lot on the leash. Crusoe is patiently waiting for his second chance at life, not on a chain or in a kennel. Please contact us or drop by the center to meet this happy boy. Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 to adopt Crusoe. n

Tigger.
This silly boy will keep you laughing! He loves to run and play with toys bigger than he is. He is fully grown at 23 lbs. and is the perfect size for an apartment or home. Tigger is a goofy boy who loves to be with people. And as any Winnie the Pooh fan could tell you, the wonderful thing about Tigger is he’s the only one! Tigger is dog aggressive, and though we have had success in working with him, we think for now he should be the only dog in the home. Call SPCA of the Triad at 375-3222 to adopt Tigger. n

Roscoe is a playful terrier mix looking for a special home. What makes a “special home”? Roscoe thinks it’s one he can grow very old in since he is only 2 years old right now. Wild Beginnings, Happy Endings
A
nimal lovers throughout the country have fallen headover-paws for the wild crew at the Conservators’ Center in Mebane, North Carolina. The Center has been a home of relocation and a safe haven for abused and neglected exotic animals since 1999. The organization was founded by Douglas Evans and Mindy Stinner, two passionate animal lovers whose efforts bring to life the Center’s three-part mission: education, conservation and rescue. In a few short years, their facility grew from two people caring for a small, midsized cat population to a massive community of staff, volunteers, donors, adopters, and visitors who support more than 100 animals representing 19 species. How did such growth happen so quickly? One rescue changed everything. In 2004, a breeding facility in Ohio was shut down for more than 900 violations of the Animal Welfare Act, including rotten food, small enclosures, and lack of veterinary care. The cats would have been euthanized if no one took them. Aware of the Center’s success in rehabilitating three tigers from previous rescues, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.)

by Kasey Thornton asked the Conservators’ Center to house 14 cats. As a nonprofit with no government funding, Stinner felt the Center could only afford to take four tigers. Another facility promised to take the remaining lions and tigers if given time to relocate their facility and build additional enclosures. With a promise of repayment from the other facility, the Conservators’ Center purchased fencing on credit and rallied an army of volunteers to build temporary enclosures for all 14 lions and tigers. Days before the big cats were going to be transported, the owner of the other sanctuary fell deathly ill. His heirs did not want the cats, nor did they honor the agreement to pay for the fencing. Evans and Stinner decided to keep their promise to take the animals instead of leaving them in poor conditions. The next surprise came soon after the cats’ arrival: four of the females were pregnant. They gave birth to 15 cubs, further skyrocketing the Center’s animal population. The organization was in a real crisis, but Evans and Stinner were determined to do whatever it took to ensure the health and happiness of every living creature in their care. They tried to find good homes for the cubs, but most places
that expressed interest wanted them for commercial purposes that made Evans and Stinner uncomfortable. A few years later, however, when the Natural Science Center of Greensboro was seeking tigers for a new exhibit, the Conservators’ Center agreed to permanently loan them a brother and sister, now named Axl and Kisa. The Center’s staff, volunteers, and interns now enjoy visiting the siblings in their current home, where they are thriving. The rest of the babies from the Ohio rescue still live at the Conservators’ Center. “Some of the animals we rescued might not be alive if they hadn’t come here,” says Stinner. “But what we’re really about is celebrating how healthy and happy they are now, not harping on the horrible conditions they came from. Equally important, their cubs have all grown into wonderful adults.” In 2007, the Conservators’ Center opened to the public to raise more money for their residents’ care. Since then, citizens of North Carolina and beyond have met the animals alongside experienced and enthusiastic tour guides. Tours are now the number one source of income for the Conservators’ Center. Another way people get involved at the Center is through Lifetime Adoption. By paying a set amount of “child support” every month, adopters can visit their animal and provide it with treats, enrichment, and positive attention. It is often the beginning of an extraordinary relationship. Kim and Frank Pyne have been volunteers and Lifetime Adopters for a lion and a wolf for five years. “Sure, sending a check helps, but developing a relationship with the animal helps more,” Kim comments. “They thrive on friendship and safe interaction with their person.” The Conservators’ Center is not a zoo—it is a special haven for animals where they can feel safe and respected. This important differentiation means that visitors have the opportunity to get closer to these creatures, physically and emotionally, than they thought possible. This does not mean they will touch them, but observing them from five feet away is a breathtaking experience. For a memorable and unique visit, you can choose from several tour types. To learn more, go to conservatorscenter.org.

You see, I was born with only half an ear canal, and thanks to being out on my own for awhile with no one to care for me, what was left got infected. So CBHR got the doc to remove all the parts that didn’t work, and sew Carolina Basset up what was left. What I lack in ears I make Hound Rescue up for with a cuddly, loving, happy personality. I’m about 10 years old so I appreciate a nice spot of sun and a comfy bed. Ten is “the new 7,” you know, so if you like to walk I’ll be happy to join you (I might need a refresher on my leash manners, though). I know how to use the doggie door, I get along really well with other dogs, and I am respectful of cats. If you’re in the mood for something really sweet, ask for me, Honey! Abby came to us recently when her former family, who had her since a pup, retired and went on the road with a trailer. The shock of the abrupt change from her life of 9 years shows on her face and in her posture and demeanor at the moment. Change such as this is Doberman Rescue of the Triad hard on most animals, but thankfully, after the initial shock, most make the transition very well. No doubt this will be the case for Abby, as well. She’s lived in the house all her life and even knows to “wipe your feet” when she comes in. She is gentle and loving and at this moment confused by the abrupt change, but she remains cooperative, agreeable, and obedient. Abby needs a stable, loving home as she moves into her later years. Training Your Pet
Just How Smart are Our Pets?
W
e value our dogs because they celebrate our arrival home each day, making us feel like the most important person in the world, or they gaze sweetly into our eyes making us feel like sometimes they are the only ones that understand us. We love our cats because of their contented purr that lets us know that everything will be okay. But, when our dogs surprise us by reacting to a certain phrase or when our cats have an uncanny ability to remember which kitchen cabinet contains their treats, we often wonder just how smart our pets are. According to psychologist and leading canine researcher Stanley Coren, PhD, of the University of British Columbia, “There are three types of dog intelligence: instinctive (what the dog is bred to do), adaptive (how well the dog learns from its environment to solve problems) and working and obedience (the equivalent of ‘school learning’).” Coren’s research showed that the “smartest” or most trainable dogs could learn commands in less than five repetitions and would obey them at least 95% of the time. His research showed that the most intelligent breeds based on this criteria were: Border Collie, Poodle, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Doberman, Pinscher, Shetland Sheepdog, Labrador Retriever, Papillion, Rottweiler, and Australian Cattle Dog. Interestingly, he also found that the average dog can learn 165 words, including signals, and dogs in the top 20% of dog intelligence can learn 250 words. His research has also shown that dogs will notice errors in simple computations such as 1+1= 3. In one series of tests, scientists lower one treat then another treat down behind a screen. When the screen is lifted, the dogs will expect to see two treats. If the scientists place an extra treat (creating a 1+1 = 3 equation) or remove a treat (creating a 1+1 = 1 equation) the dog will act surprised and stare at the treats for a longer period of time, just like a human child would.
46
by Kim Vaughn Dogs have been trained to anticipate seizures, panic attacks, and large drops in blood sugar levels in their owners and then to alert their owners to these things so that they can take preventative action. Trained psychiatric service dogs have assisted many soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Studying dog intelligence and the many ways that dogs benefit humans continues to gain popularity. In fact, we have one of the few labs in the country that focuses on how dogs think, right here in North Carolina at the Duke University Canine Cognition Center. Director, Brian Hare, completed one of the most widely publicized experiments from the lab. In the experiment, Hare placed a treat under one of two inverted cups across the room without the test dog’s knowledge. Then he would simply point to the cup that had the treat under it and the dog would walk towards the cup that Hare was pointing to and retrieve the treat. This may sound simple, but understanding a pointed finger is something that is unique to only humans and dogs. No other species in the animal kingdom is known to be able to understand this concept. While dogs are smarter than you may have thought, don’t count the cats out just yet. It’s true that cats do not typically perform “tricks”, but that does not mean that they are not as smart as dogs. It simply means that they are motivated differently. Dogs, being pack animals, are typically motivated by a need to follow and please their pack leader (or human master). Cats, on the other hand are more solitary and therefore are motivated by the need to survive. This survival motivation makes them resourceful, clever and good problem solvers. Also, cats have excellent memories. Once they have learned information, it is usually retained for life. There are many ways to define and to measure intelligence in pets. A quick search on the internet will show you several easy ways to test your dog’s or cat’s intelligence

level. But, when you do, just remember the “smartest” dogs and cats don’t always make the best pets, just as the “smartest” people don’t necessarily make the best friends. There are many factors involved when training your dog. As mentioned earlier, intelligence, breed, temperament, environment and background are all important in how easy or difficult the training process is. The intelligence test is fun, but not the only deciding factor in the training process and, more importantly, the relationship between you and your dog. Yes, intelligence does play an important role, but sometimes the smartest dogs can be harder to train - they already “know” what they want to do. Training should be a bonding, enjoyable experience for both you and your dog. Use it as a tool to keep your dog safe and happy, and both of you will reap the rewards.

Jamestown Pottery
t started as a “what if ” conversation, which was later followed by an offer from a property owner, and then to a dream come true. On February 15, 2012, Jamestown Pottery Shop opened its doors to the public for the very first time. Owner Kris Scheppmann said she’d been thinking about opening a larger studio to get her equipment out of the family’s garage for awhile. Then one day Kris, along with friends and fellow artist, Dana Hester and Virya Cranfield started “dreaming” out loud about how perfect it would be to have a studio and shop in which to sell their pottery. Shortly after that conversation, the owner of commercial property in downtown Jamestown approached Kris about a space he had available. Kris knew then it was meant to be, so with the help of her friends she created Jamestown Pottery Shop.
This down to earth pottery studio acts as the home base for the potters to work, as well as offering a store front in which to sell their creations. Word spread about this unique shop, and people started coming by to inquire about classes, so the three amigos created selected workshops offered the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. They also offer private workshops to groups ranging from four to fifteen people. The workshops have been popular for birthdays, church groups and girls’ night out. At the end of each workshop, Kris prepares a delicious meal, culminating the delightful creative and bonding experience. Jamestown Pottery Shop also welcomes special orders for all occasions. Now is the perfect time to put in those Christmas orders. Why not buy local and help our economy right here in the Triad? The ladies of the pottery shop welcome friends and visitors, and if you are lucky, you might just get to meet “Oliver” the four legged store mascot. Currently there are five artists represented, selling a variety of very reasonably priced pottery, paintings and jewelry. Many items are suitable for teacher gifts and that hard to buy for someone in your life. We offer utilitarian and decorative pieces along with a wide selection of handmade silver, leather, and ceramic jewelry. Workshops are popular for birthdays, church groups or “nights out” gatherings.
