Gypsy is a stumpy Manx, born about November 2010. She’s a sweet girl who adores being petted. She is used to living in a multi cat household and does very well with other cats. She’s the first to give head butts, and rub her face against yours. Gypsy would like to sleep on my head as well, but I convince her to curl against my side instead. She is vaccinated, wormed, spayed, microchipped, and FeLV/FIV negative. For more information visit www.taillesscatrescue.com or email us at: taillesscatrescue@hotmail.com.

ON THE COVER: Oscar is about 11 months old, has merle coloring and is very sweet. He is crate-trained and housebroken. He knows basic commands and is very smart. He gets along with other dogs and likes people of all ages and sexes. Oscar does have some separation anxiety and will not be a good fit in an apartment setting, unless there are people around for much of the day. Oscar would be a great running dog. Come meet Oscar at the AARF adoption fair on Saturdays from noon to 3 pm at 311 Harvey Street, Winston-Salem. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within one hour of Winston-Salem.

Why Every Pet Needs a Veterinarian
A
new chapter is beginning in your life. You just moved out of your parent’s house, found a decent job and moved to a new city. You finally feel like you’re an adult and ready to take the next big step in life, adopting a pet! You decide to rescue a shelter cat and feel great for saving a life. You know you need to take the cat to the vet, but she came from the shelter already spayed and up to date on shots. Since she stays indoors and acts happy and healthy, the vet visit gets put on your to do list, but doesn’t get checked off. Now fast forward a couple months. It’s the weekend and you’re ready to relax. After sleeping in on Saturday, you go to feed your kitty but she doesn’t want to eat. Normally very playful, all she wants to do is sleep and is sneezing and congested. At this time you start to panic. You frantically try to research vets in your area, but the ones you call are either closed or are completely booked and unable to see a new patient. All you can find is the emergency clinic 30 minutes away. You know this could be tough financially having just incurred a lot of moving expenses, but you proceed having no other choice. This is a scary situation, but one that you can avoid by having an established relationship with a veterinarian. When you acquire a new pet, you should take it to a vet right away for a wellness exam. But because you are not panicking about a sick pet, you can take some time to research local vet clinics and look at their websites, staff bios and online reviews in order to find one that best suits you. A welcoming vet clinic will even offer a tour of their hospital prior to joining their practice. Once you find a vet and take your pet in for the first appointment, the vet will be able to perform a complete nose
to tail examination. The vet will be able to pick up changes on the physical exam that you may not have noticed, such as a heart murmur, fleas, dental disease or potentially cancerous skin growths. After the physical exam, the vet will be able to make recommendations for your pet including vaccines needed, diet, dental care, as well as heartworm, flea and tick prevention. But the best part of the physical exam is that you have the vet’s undivided attention! This is the time to get your money’s worth and ask anything and everything about your pet, from nutrition and exercise to behavior and house breaking! All of us veterinarians went to school for many years, and have lots of knowledge we’d love to share with our clients, especially those who like to ask questions! During the visit, vaccine records will be added to your pet’s file so you will receive reminders when your pet is due. Some vets such as Northwood Animal Hospital offer services like E-pet health®, a pet portal database which allows you to view your pet’s vaccines records and lab work results online anytime. E-pet health® also offers extensive educational videos and articles about pet health. No more fearing the worst after consulting Dr. Google. By the end of the visit, hopefully the receptionists, techs and Doctor will have gotten to know you and developed a fondness for your new pet. Going back to that Saturday morning when your pet is sick and you give your favorite vet a call, hopefully you will hear “It’s a busy Saturday but we don’t want your sweet kitty to wait until Monday. If you don’t mind a little wait and you are patient with us, we will be glad to see you.” Northwood Animal Hospital invites you to—

We Dream If the sky were the limit, we would dream of a time when there would be no need for Animal Adoption & Rescue Foundation. All cats and dogs would have loving homes where they would be well fed, loved, safe, and protected. By Rebecca Kennedy Animal Adoption & Rescue Foundation
Foxy AARF (Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation) aids homeless and helpless cats and dogs in the greater Winston Salem area. We provide rescue and adoption services, information and education, while encouraging the human/animal bond. That is our mission. Our vision is to be the best at what we do, which is rescue and adoption. But what are our dreams? The answer to that would be as diverse as the number of volunteers, adopters, fosters, and donors who make up the face, heart and soul of AARF. If the sky were the limit, we would dream of a time when there would be no need for AARF. All cats and dogs would have loving homes where they would be well fed, loved, safe and protected. They would live long happy lives. There would be play and laughter every day. Treats would abound. All would get consistent vet care and the very best in nutrition. We certainly dream of a facility designed especially for our needs, but for now we have a building and location that serves us well. We need funds to keep it clean, well maintained, safe and welcoming for the dogs and cats, and inviting for people coming to meet their new companions.
12
We also dream of increased funding to cover medical care for animals in need of assistance. The largest portion of our budget is used for direct animal care (both medicines and vet care). We have a team of volunteer vets who help us weekly provide the best care for our foster animals. Their service saves us much and enables us to do more with the funds we have. Our veterinary partners also contribute, with the help of their practices, to provide for the more complicated medical issues. And we dream of volunteers. We have wonderful people who are a part of AARF, but as one of our volunteers is inclined to say, “Many hands make light work.” The work is ongoing and often difficult. We dream of many volunteers to help with all that it takes to rescue and adopt homeless and abandoned animals. We need people to do the work of facility care, to foster, to raise funds, to educate and to answer inquiries for help. There is always something to be done, and lives depend on us. We dream of more feet, hands, hearts and minds to join the cause. The reality is that AARF took in 259 dogs and 340 cats in 2014. We adopted 243 dogs and 402 cats into loving homes in 2014, as well. In 2015, we have taken 165 dogs into
October 2015 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
our program and adopted 141 dogs and puppies into homes. We have taken in 242 cats and adopted 205 cats into their forever homes. Champ, a 1-½ year old Lab/Shepherd mix, was found with a broken leg. His injury was an old one, and his leg had healed at a right angle. He was walking on his bent, infected limb. The family who found him contacted AARF for help. They were willing to foster Champ, and our dreams provided the medical care and amputation required, giving Champ a better quality of life. A mail carrier found a tiny kitten on the side of the road in 90 degree weather. She bottle fed it for a few days and contacted AARF for help. Upon receiving the kitten, we realized that he has some health issues (cerebellar hypoplasia, probably from an in utero infection from his mother). He may improve, but will likely always be “challenged”. We have volunteers who will bottle feed and care for him until he is old enough to be adopted by someone who is willing to take him as he is. We already have an adopter interested in giving “Jagger” a forever home. Not all of our dogs and cats require special care, but we dream of helping those who come to us with or without special needs.
In recent months we helped Scarlet, a one year old Pit/Lab mix abandoned with four puppies. She was able to free herself, went to the door of an AARF volunteer and led him back to her puppies. AARF has rescued Scarlet and her puppies and they will be placed in forever, loving homes. A woman rescued 5 Pit puppies from a horrible situation and brought them to AARF for help. Covered in urine and feces, and infested with worms, they had skin infections and sores on their feet. They were eight weeks old, but looked about four weeks. AARF was able to help, and four of the five puppies are now in their new homes. The fifth puppy is currently in foster care, awaiting his forever home. Once again, our dreams came true for these puppies. Three kittens were found beside a snake that had eaten two of their litter mates. After the efforts of several volunteers to keep them alive, two of those beautiful kittens already have homes waiting for them. We receive cats, dogs, kittens and puppies from all kinds of situations. They are abandoned on the side of the road, found under cars, born behind storage buildings or in the monkey grass. Biscuit is a 2-1/2 year old, sweet Yellow Labrador mix who loves life. She enjoys snuggling (but won’t get up on the furniture), walks well on the leash and is very friendly to all people. Biscuit enjoys Triad Golden Retriever Rescue playing with toys, and gets along well with other dogs. She is currently being fostered in a home with three other dogs and two cats, and she fits in well. Biscuit is very smart and obedient, and learns rules quickly. At 45 pounds, she is not a large dog, but she has endless love for her humans.

Vet’s Corner Corinne McGregor, DVM Southwoods Animal Hospital Dr. Corinne McGregor grew up on a small horse farm in northeast Indiana. She completed her undergraduate degrees at the University of Findlay in Ohio, and graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. She has been with Southwoods Animal Hospital for 11 years, and recently became an owner of the practice. In her free time she enjoys cooking, reading, hiking, and spending time with her husband and two daughters. She currently is allowed to co-habitate with one very sassy cat named Mia, and a needy Maltese mix named Finley.
What’s Up With My Dog’s Bottom? It never fails… you have company over for a nice dinner and Fido decides to start scooting his rear end across the carpet. Or you’re almost asleep and Fluffy starts loudly slurping away at her bum. What does it mean when dogs (or cats) are doing these disgusting habits? Well, the most common cause is a problem with the anal glands. Anal glands are actually two sacs that lie under the skin, one on each side of the anus, at the 4:00 and 8:00 positions. Inside, the sacs are lined with gland cells that produce a stinky, oily substance which acts as a scent marker. The fluid exits through a tiny duct that opens at the anus, and is normally expressed when a dog passes a bowel movement. It’s also the reason dogs sniff each other’s rear end to get to know one another. Anal gland problems can occur for numerous reasons, all of which result in build-up of anal gland fluid. Chronic diarrhea or constipation, obstruction of the duct, and obesity can all cause reduced ability to empty the glands. Excessive gland secretion can be caused by allergies, hormone imbalance, or skin infections, and will cause the glands to fill up quickly. When glands become distended with anal gland material the glands become uncomfortable, and the pet licks or scoots to try to relieve the itching and pain. Anal Sacculitis means inflammation of the sac. The fluid can be expressed at this stage, but it may be painful when the gland is squeezed and sometimes the fluid is bloody or has pus in it. The glands need to be expressed, or emptied of the fluid. Since your pet is uncomfortable this is best done at the vet’s office. Your pet may need antibiotics and pain medications to relieve the discomfort and prevent worsening of the problem. The glands may refill quickly, so your vet may ask that you return in a week or so to empty the glands again and make sure the problem is clearing up.
Impaction occurs when the gland doesn’t express normally and the fluid becomes so thick and dry that it can’t squeeze through the duct. If the problem is diagnosed at this stage, your vet will attempt to express the glands. If they cannot be emptied your pet may need to be sedated to allow the glands to be flushed with antiseptic to relieve the impaction. The gland may be infused with antibiotics, and your dog will be placed on oral medications as well. If it continues to build up, the anal sac can become so infected and inflamed that it becomes an Anal Sac Abscess which is a hard, swollen, painful lump on the pet’s rear end. A surgical opening may then be required to allow drainage. If not treated, the abscessed gland will rupture and drain to the outside. This is a Ruptured Anal Sac and is quite painful. Most clients notice the pet is bleeding from its rear end, but closer inspection reveals the blood is actually coming from a hole in the skin next to the anus. These are typically treated by flushing the wound with antiseptic and infusing medication inside, then starting oral antibiotics and pain medications. Frequent monitoring may be needed if the abscess is large, and occasionally surgical excision of the infected tissue is required. Most dogs never have a problem with their anal glands, but those that do can have frequent, painful bouts of sacculitis or abscesses. Depending on the underlying cause, some dogs will respond to dietary changes. A high fiber diet or fiber supplement will “bulk up” the stools to help the glands express naturally. If allergies are an issue, then a hypoallergenic diet may be the best choice. Controlling an underlying allergy with medication or desensitization therapy may also be necessary. Having the glands expressed regularly to prevent build-up may work for some dogs. Owners can learn to do this at home, but it’s definitely a 2-person job, and most owners don’t want to deal with the stink! Besides, if the pet has developed an infection it may be painful and he may not appreciate your efforts. It’s often best to let the vet be the “bad guy.” Chronic anal gland disease that hasn’t responded to medical therapy can be treated by surgical removal of the glands. While this is a permanent solution, there are some very important side effects to be aware of. The gland tissue is very thin, and if not completely removed the remaining gland tissue will continue to produce fluid, which will build up and create a draining tract. Also, the glands lie within the muscles of the anus which keep it tightly closed. If damage occurs to the muscles or nerves during surgery the pet may experience permanent fecal incontinence. Scooting and licking can be signs of other diseases as well. Any type of skin irritation, such as allergies, fleas or other parasites can cause itchiness. Swelling or bumps around the anal area can be due to cancers of the anal glands or perianal tissues, or perineal hernias. Bleeding or discharge from the skin may be caused by skin infections or Perianal Fistulas – a disease most common in German Shepherds. So, if your dog is showing any of these symptoms, it’s best to see the vet to diagnose the problem and select the proper treatments. And, don’t think that anal gland problems are only for dogs – cats can have many of the same issues!

We believe the last weeks, days, and moments that an owner has with a pet are the most cherished times, and should be handled with dignity and love. By providing veterinary hospice and pet euthanasia services in the home, the human-animal bond is less disturbed, making a much more peaceful closing to a shared bond.

Isra.
Allow us to formally introduce the Queen of Freedom....Miss Isra. Isra was a shelter pup just a few weeks ago, now she is an ARFP foster pup. Although she feels giant in her mind, Isra is vertically challenged with short legs and a low rider body. Isra loves playtime with her favorite squeakers and enjoys cuddle time late at night. Are you interested in meeting this 11 month old little girl? Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n
Meet Moxie,

Moxie is now healthy and ready to be adopted! She is waiting on your call at 336-574-9600 or email savapup2@aol.com. Call ARFP at 574-9600 for more information. n
Tangle.
Tucker
is a 6 lb. Chihuahua that was pulled from the Guilford County Animal Shelter. The vet estimates his age to be 8 years old. Through ARFP, Tucker has now been neutered, had a complete dental cleaning, had a mass removed from his mouth, has been heartworm tested (negative), and is now up-to-date on all his shots and ready to find his forever home. Tucker is our little ‘Zen’ dog. He believes in taking life in the slow lane, stopping to smell the roses, and appreciates the art of a good nap (meditation). He’s very quiet and is working hard on his house-training. He will come up to you and bow his head, asking for a rub or scratch, almost like he doesn’t want to bother you but would really appreciate some attention. Tucker is a sweet little guy, just looking for a quiet place to finally call home.
Hide and go seek, then jump out and scare your brother. This is the game that Tangle likes to play over and over with his brother, Scrappy. Tangle, born May 12 2015, is full of playful kitten energy - you know the kind where you run, roll and then sleep hard. You can always count on Tangle to greet you when you enter the room. Tangle is up-to-date on his shots and is actively seeking his forever companion. Do you like the loving, cuddling, playful type? If so, Tangle is your man!

Are you interested in adding a family member to your home? Jordan is your girl!
Born in July 2010, Jolly was once a roamer of the streets. She is now living the good life as an ARFP foster kitty. Jolly is up-to-date on her shots, spayed and is ready for the next chapter of her life to begin. Jolly gets along great with her fourlegged friends and curls right up to every human friend that she meets. Bear. This little fella is a bit
Daisy is an active puppy who is
spunky and ready to have some fun! He has some basic manners but still needs to work on a few things. Bear LOVES to play ball. In fact, it has to be one of his favorite pastimes. His family gave him up because he needed more than their schedule would allow. Bear enjoys life and adventures. If you are looking for a little buddy to be your companion, then he is your man. Bear is upto-date on vaccines, neutered and microchipped.
looking for someone willing to give her an outlet for her energy, such as a fenced in backyard, long walks or a play buddy, and some guidance on continuing her manners. She is very sweet and LOVES people and kids. She is housebroken and crate-trained. Daisy is a little too much for most cats and small animals so we recommend a house with no cats or small animals, like rabbits or guinea pigs. She doesn’t hurt them but is overly interested in their presence. She is upto-date on vaccines and will be spayed and microchipped soon.
If interested in adopting Bear, visit www.reddogfarm.com. n

Charlie.
Are you looking for a roommate that will listen? A roommate that will give great advice? Or at least one that will enjoy spending time with you? Then Charlie is your dream roommate! He is very loving and social. He enjoys getting petted and hanging out with you and your friends. He also enjoys a good conversation and will talk back to you. But he knows how to just listen as well. Charlie loves to play with socks. He would be a wonderful addition to any family. Charlie is up-to-date on vaccines, neutered, and microchipped. If you are interested in adopting Charlie, please visit our website at www.reddogfarm.com. n
Lilly.
Clover
came to Red Dog Farm when the shelter contacted us and needed help placing her. Clover is a a little overweight and therefore is having a difficult time grooming herself. She is now on a strict diet in hopes of losing that weight in order to better maintain her bunny habits. In the meantime, her foster family is helping by brushing her often and keeping her clean. Personality-wise Clover is your typical domesticated rabbit. A little reserved but sweet. Visit www.reddogfarm.com to apply to adopt Clover. n
Madeline.
This sweet goat and her two goat friends, Princess, another Nubian goat and Dora, a Boer goat, came to us after the family that owned them sold their farm. Lilly is approximately 10 years old. She is very easy to handle and likes attention. Dora is 12 years old and prefers to keep to herself. Princess is approximately 3 years old and is timid but is warming up to people, especially if they have watermelon! We’d love to keep this herd together.
This fabulous miniature horse is about 5 years old. She came to us from the Guilford County Animal Shelter along with several other minis. Madeline is by far the sweetest and most socialized of the bunch. Madeline is always the first to greet her foster mom. She stood well while being groomed and did very well for our farrier too.

Tucker
Mattie.
is cute, spunky, and ready to be your family’s fur-ever canine! He is a 6-7 month old Terrier mix who was found wandering around in the cold with his brother Luigi. He is very playful and active... and supremely handsome! Mario is also very intelligent and a fast learner when it comes to obedience training. Mario needs a human who can keep his body and mind active, someone who will continue his training and keep him from becoming bored. If you need a buddy who likes to get out and enjoy life, but also likes to spend quality time getting petted and just hanging out, then Mario is the buddy for you!
Sweet, gentle and low key describes Mattie perfectly. She is an 8 year old Husky/Malamute mix who just wants to love and be loved. She came to the SPCA of the Triad from the Guilford County Animal Shelter and, while there, was given the ASPCA Temperament Test and passed with flying colors. Mattie needs a person as calm as she is and someone who understands the needs of a dog this size, as well as the need to keep her groomed. If she sounds like the love muffin for you, please contact us about meeting her. We are sure you will fall in love, just like we did!

Bryce
Star. Everybody needs a “Star” in
is a 2 year old orange and white DSH kitty. He was found as a lonely stray behind someone’s house in Gibsonville and wants nothing more than a home and a family of his very own. Bryce is very sweet-natured and gentle with humans and other kitties. When he’s not busy being stretched out in front of a sunny window, he loves to follow you around and see what you’re up to. Bryce needs a home full of sunlight, love and companionship.
their life and sweet Star couldn’t agree more. She is a 3 year old Basenji/Terrier mix who was surrendered to a high kill shelter by her owner because they couldn’t afford her. Star is smart, has good energy and is very enthusiastic. This combination does cause her to tug on her leash and jump up on people. For this reason she may not be the best choice for a home with small children. Star gets along with other dogs and loves people. She also loves petting, attention and snuggles. She is a super little girl who just wants a human or family of her own. Someone who will shower her with love and attention but can also train her on some basics so she won’t jump or pull.
Are you Bryce’s fur-ever hero?

Taylor
Malus
is a 12 year old, declawed calico with bright green eyes. Originally adopted from the SPCA as an 8-month old kitten, Taylor recently found herself back with us and now she is looking for that special someone who will take her home and make her part of their family. Taylor likes people and is happy just to have a little perch where she can watch what is going on and take long naps. After her experiences, Taylor would like to be an only cat so she can get the proper care, love and attention she deserves. She enjoys the simple pleasures: a good meal followed by a quiet, relaxing nap on the sofa. She loves to follow you around to see what you are doing and loves even more to curl up beside you for a good head rub.
is tall, long, lanky, and just plain handsome! He is a one year old orange and white DSH who gets along well with other cats. He is so gentle and curious and will often follow you around just to watch what you are up to. Nothing gets by this lovable little guy! Malus also likes his snuggle time and gentle petting. He would be a good fit for almost any home. If he sounds like he could walk right into your heart and home, then contact us to see about meeting Malus.

Louise
is a 6 month old Boxer mix. He gets along with everyone—dogs, cats, and kids. Sparky is very energetic and boisterous so we would not recommend him for a family with very young children as they would likely get knocked down. He likes to wrestle and play, so he may prefer a family with another dog.

Socks was found as a stray, heartworm positive, emaciated and homeless. A kind veterinarian and her family took him in, helped him get well, and kept him until a foster or forever home could be found for him. Training Your Pet
THE SLIP LEAD: An Underrated Tool By Brad Howell, Red Beard Dog Training
T
aking the family dog for a walk is something many owners struggle with, but it doesn’t have to be that way! Being a confident and consistent leader for your dog is the most important aspect of any training, but that is still just a portion of the formula for success. Knowing what you’re trying to teach your dog is important, but even if you are confident in what you are doing, you need the proper physical tools to help you communicate your message consistently. I am here to urge you to ditch that harness and retractable leash and try using a simple slip lead. My preference is the 4-foot nylon leash made by Midnight. It’s physically not much more than a shoestring, but don’t let that fool you in regards to its effectiveness. A true walk with the dog means no stopping to mark, sniff, do circles around the handler, etc. The dog should just be walking right beside you. For this, four feet of leash is all that is needed. It has a very simple, flat design that will cinch down if the dog or handler pulls the leash. However, if there is no pressure, the leash will loosen up comfortably around the neck. These leashes are also A simple 4-ft. slip lead from extremely secure and will not slide Midnight Pet Products. These are over the dog’s head. Also worth available at All Pets Considered mentioning is the fact that they or online for less than $10. only cost around $8. Rounded slip leads are more common, but you must make sure they have some sort of tab that will slide down to keep the dog from ducking out of the leash. Leads with metal rings are popular at shelters and vets offices, but they rely on constant pressure to keep them from sliding over the dog’s head. When a dog pulls against a slip lead, the pressure is evenly distributed around the entire neck, unlike a clipped leash on a flat collar which puts pressure directly on the trachea. Most dogs are responsive to this pressure. If they begin to pull, simply turn in the opposite direction, and they will follow as soon as they put tension on the leash. The same technique with a harness will result in you still having to physically pull the dog. Although I train dogs for a living, I find it unnecessary to make them walk in perfect Best-in-Show heel. We all want the same thing — a loose leash walk. Getting to the point of walking with a loose leash isn’t very hard, but it does take a consistent approach that can be nearly impossible without the right tools.

Ollie and Luna take a pause during a lesson. They are fans of the light and versatile slip lead and are modeling them here.
Typically owners will start with a standard 6-ft. leash and a flat collar. Once the dog nearly chokes itself or it slips a collar that is fitted too loosely over its head, a harness is the next line of defense for the pet owner. Harnesses are pretty secure if fitted properly, but the downsides far outweigh the benefits. Dogs tend to pull even more with a harness because there is no way to correct them. Furthermore, a dog’s strength is through its back and shoulders and a harness allows them to use those muscles to their utmost potential (like sled dogs). I have had several owners contact me after being literally pulled over and dragged. The one common denominator was that all of them were walking dogs on harnesses. From here, people either get the strongest leash they can find to hold on for dear life, or they get a retractable leash so the dog can go ahead as far as it wants in exchange for not dealing with the pulling. If the pulling is still an issue, they may try a no-pull harness or a Halti, which goes around the dog’s muzzle. The idea of a no-pull harness is to change the dog’s gait when it does pull, which can eventually lead to joint issues like arthritis. The Halti gives an owner much more control then a regular leash, but it’s very frustrating to the dog. It spends most of the walk pawing at its face. Worrying about the Halti doesn’t give it much time to pull, but these tools are rooted in distracting or frustrating the dog instead of teaching. There are a lot of shiny and fashionable collars/leashes/harnesses out there, but when it comes to walking the dog, consider choosing substance over style.

Armani loves to please his human, and it seems as though someone has spent time with him in the past on the basics of training. He walks very well on lead, and while he gets excited about receiving treats, he responds nicely to “easy.” Around 5-1/2 years old, Armani has that wonderful Dober, can-beintimidating look when he is at attention, and he does the Dober prance when excited. He seems a little shy when meeting, but that’s not uncommon when a dog has gone through some difficult times and typically decreases as he settles into his new surroundings. He Doberman Rescue of the Triad loves to run, play, roll in the grass and even swim in the pond, and is agile enough to sail over a four-foot fence. Peanut is a very smart, sweet dog. He loves to play with toys and learn new tricks. He is learning more acceptable ways to show his discomfort or displeasure such as moving away or giving a warning. He loves leisure walks and is not reactive on leash towards dogs or people. He is crate/ potty-trained and has picked up several Chihuahua Rescue basic commands quickly. He is still learning roll over and crawl! He is respectful of open doors and gates with very little encouragement. He loves to play with dogs, but would do best with a submissive playmate. He doesn’t mind commotion and loud activity, he is right up in everything all the time. Peanut enjoys the comforts of his crate and likes to snuggle in the morning. He’s UTD on shots, neutered, microchipped and on HW preventative. He’s estimated to be around 9-10 months and weighs 4-5 lbs.

Charlee’s Journey
From Shelter Dog to a Chance for True Happiness Editor’s note: This is the beginning of a series, that will follow the journey Charlee (formerly Debo) is making from shelter dog to learning to live in a real home. Camp Bow Wow in Greensboro was kind enough to foster him after his long stay at the Guilford County Animal Shelter, but having few social skills, they found no one was interested in adopting Charlee. Enter James Voyatzis, owner of Sitzen K9, who volunteered to take Charlee into his home and help him develop the skills needed in order to fit into someone’s home. We are pleased to follow his journey and give progress reports over the next few months. We are all hoping for a happy ending with Charlee finding his forever home he so richly deserves. Please share his journey with us. THT Magazine
A
s a dog trainer, my goal is to improve the quality of life for dogs and their humans. There are so many dogs out there that need a good home, but fall through the cracks and don’t get adopted. Recently, I was contacted by Paola, the owner of Camp Bow Wow of Greensboro about a dog named Charlee (formerly Debo) that they had been fostering for well over six months. The dog was at the Guilford County Shelter for about a year prior to that. Paola said Charlee is sweet with people, but is starting to have issues interacting with other dogs. She was concerned he would not get adopted. Paola invited me to meet Charlee one afternoon at Camp Bow Wow. They put Charlee and me into a small room. Starting off, Charlee was very cautious around me. For the first 20 minutes, Charlee stayed in the corner. His body language was telling me he was not that into me. His Charlee slowly approached tail was tucked under, and me and sniffed my foot. he was giving off a faint I wanted to reward growl. I sat on the floor and his bravery. turned away from him. I let him build up the nerve to come investigate me. I had a pocket full of smelly treats, which probably made
me a little more interesting to him! Charlee slowly approached me and sniffed my foot. I wanted to reward his bravery. Every time he showed interest in me, I rewarded him with a “good boy!” and a treat. After a while, he was wagging his tail. His body language was indicating that he was much more relaxed. I put a leash on Charlee and began walking him around the room. He understood some of the basics, but needed some work on other things like leash walking. My overall impression of Charlee was that he was a good dog, but had been in a kennel environment for too long. Dogs that are in shelters and kennels for extended periods can go “kennel crazy”, which is when they become overly stressed by that environment and behavior/ socialization problems develop. Charlee needed to be in a home environment or his social skills would get progressively worse. I decided the best thing for Charlee would be to come home with me, and start training and socializing with my dogs. I wanted to show him what it is like to live in a home. I don’t know if Charlee has ever lived in a home. When I brought Charlee to my house, it seemed like he had not spent much time inside. Charlee was not house-trained, jumped on our furniture, counter surfed and knocked over our trash can. I immediately started crate-training him. A crate helps establish a clear routine for dogs, and is the best way to house-train a dog. Within a couple of days, Charlee understood that the bathroom was outside, not on our kitchen floor! For the next few weeks, Charlee and I are going to work on his obedience. He is going to learn all of the basics. We are also going to slowly introduce him to other dogs, and teach him to stay calm and confident around the other pups. Check us out on Facebook - www.facebook.com/SitzenK9, to follow Charlee’s progress. And look for our next feature in future copies of Triad Happy Tails Magazine. (see ad on page 45)
Left to right: Day one shows the fear/mistrust in Charlee’s body language. After only a few days, things are beginning to change.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month by Brittany Murray, Winston-Salem Police Department
W
hat do you think of when you hear the words domestic violence? Do you immediately envision a lady with dark sunglasses and a scarf around her neck? Or maybe a petite woman huddled in a dark corner with her face in her hands? For many people, these are the images that first come to mind. To be sure, these are very truthful images of some victims, but certainly not all. Do you ever think of a child who lies in bed while hearing mom and dad argue over the grocery bill, only to hear the argument silenced by “bad words” and crying? How about the woman who is dragged into a car by an intoxicated boyfriend and threatened to be killed if she tries to escape or call for help? Or have you ever imagined the wealthy businessman whose domestic partner
We celebrate survivors, learn from and grieve for those who have died and seek to find new ways to reach those living with domestic violence.

repeatedly kicks his dog in front of him as punishment for talking to someone too long on the phone? These images of domestic violence can be most difficult to comprehend. Domestic violence does not only include physical abuse, but mental, sexual, verbal, emotional and financial abuse as well. Domestic violence does not discriminate; it affects people of all ages, origin, gender and class. In 2014, the Winston-Salem Police Department responded to 5,492 domestic violence related calls. These numbers are not just specific to Winston-Salem, but are consistent across the country. It is a problem and it’s time to talk about it. Domestic Violence Awareness Month began in October 1987 and is still observed today. This time is set aside to further educate others about domestic violence, remind us of the impact and effect it has on so many, and to encourage advocacy and understanding about a subject many choose to ignore. As a domestic violence advocate, I find myself looking for “red flags” when I read a police report. These red flags signal to me that the victim is in a very dangerous situation that could escalate and even become deadly. One of these red flags is animal abuse. Some people may not realize the very serious correlation between animal abuse and domestic violence in intimate partner relationships. Domestic violence batterers may abuse a family pet as punishment, to demonstrate power and control, as a form of intimidation or simply to keep the victim from leaving their abusive partner. Batterers use this method of abuse because it works. Many victims absolutely refuse to leave their residence and seek shelter if they have a pet. Sometimes the only source of companionship and happiness that the victim has is their cat, dog, bird, lizard, etc. The thought of leaving that part of their family behind is not a choice. I once had a victim tell me that her husband threw their four-monthold puppy across the room in its crate and then kicked the crate. He then looked at her and said, “See what I did to that dog? I can do that to you.” This type of intimidation is never forgotten. Fortunately, more and more people are being educated about the link between pet abuse and domestic violence. In fact, our local animal shelter, Forsyth County Animal Shelter, and its Safe Haven Program Partners have developed a program to provide temporary foster care for animals affected by domestic violence. The Safe Haven program was founded in 2002 as a collaborative effort between Forsyth County Animal Control and Family Services, Inc. This program offers an option to domestic violence victims. Clients seeking refuge with Family Services, Inc. are provided with the relief knowing their pet will be cared for. For more information regarding the Safe Haven program, visit their website at http://animalcontrol.forsyth.cc.
In addition to Shadow, Assistant Chief Southern has four other dogs, four cats, three horses and one bird. All of her pets are “rescue” animals. Assistant Chief Southern spends much of her time and money ensuring her pets live a happy and healthy lifestyle. Any threat of animal abuse or actual incident of animal cruelty should be taken very seriously. Even if the abuser has never physically harmed the victim, animal cruelty is a warning sign that clearly demonstrates the abuser’s lack of respect for a living, breathing creature. These incidents can and should be reported to law enforcement.
The National Link Coalition reports the following startling facts about
—52% of domestic violence victims residing in shelters left their pets with their abuser. —Studies found that 33.3% of women without children were not willing to seek shelter out of concern for their pets compared to 19.5% of women with children. —Only 12% of domestic violence programs are able to provide shelter for pets and only 24% can provide referral services to a local animal shelter. Where To Find Help:
Pets and Domestic Violence: —71% of victims entering shelters report that their abusers had threatened, injured, or killed a family pet. —Studies found that 87% of abusers perpetrated abuse in the presence of their partner for the purpose of revenge or controlling their partner. —76% of abusers are known to often abuse the family pet in the presence of the children. —13% of intentional animal abuse was reported to have involved domestic violence cases.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please know that you can ask for help. Victims of domestic violence never deserve the abuse, it is not their fault. To speak with a Winston-Salem Police Department domestic violence advocate, call 336-773-7860.

strong!), estimated to be around 3-5 years of age. She enjoys cuddling, walks, and belly rubs galore! When she’s happy, she makes the cutest snorts you’ve ever heard! She does well with medium sized dogs or larger, but finds smaller animals (toy breeds, cats, birds, etc.) to be a little too much for her and would do best in a home without such distractions. She is crate and house-trained.
