Training Your Pet
Introducing a Rescue/Foster Dog Into Your Home Be honest with yourself and know what you are prepared to deal with By: Tina Buck
Tina Buck and her husband, John.
S
ince starting my business, I have worked closely with several local rescues and have seen so many adopted dogs come back and so many foster dogs have to switch homes because of issues. Many times this has happened in a matter of only a week or two of being placed, sometimes within only an hour! Whether adopting from a shelter or a rescue, one important thing to keep in mind...PATIENCE! Rome wasn’t built in a day. Be sure that everyone in the household is ready and prepared for another dog. Communicate with ALL members of the family and be aware that bringing in another dog changes the dynamic of the pack. I have heard the excuse, “The husband said or the wife said.” If even one person is not happy, that will cause tension and ultimately issues.
If you do already have dog(s), try introducing on neutral ground and while all dogs are calm. I would suggest on leash at first and be sure that you are confident in doing introductions. If not, ask a friend that is, for help, or a trainer. If you are the least bit uncomfortable, the dogs will sense that and may feel the need to protect you or control the situation. Also, one dog may fit right in with your pack, while another dog may take several weeks to be comfortable with other dogs. Are you prepared to keep them separated, if needed? As the new dog gets comfortable with the new surroundings, new behaviors, good or bad, may start. This is normal behavior as the dog starts to “come out of its shell”. Talk to a trainer and get suggestions on how to deter the bad behaviors. Try to stop any bad habits before they start. Keep in mind that one method of training may work well for your dogs, but may not work as well for the new dog. Be honest with yourself and know what you are prepared to deal with. Research breeds, get as much info on the dog as possible and it’s temperament, ask friends that have fostered/ adopted, and work with trainer(s) if needed. Remember, each dog is different, stay calm, be patient, and seek help!

Vet’s Corner Elizabeth Eilers is a Greensboro native and a 1999 graduate of NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine. She has been at the Cat Clinic since 2003 and became the owner in 2010. Before moving back to Greensboro, Dr. Eilers practiced small animal and emergency medicine in Wilmington, NC and Southern California. She enjoys getting to know her patients and their owners, and loves Elizabeth Eilers, DVM the challenge and fun Cat Clinic of Greensboro of feline medicine. She and her husband Pat enjoy riding their bikes on the trails, and just about any sport on the water. They share their home with a minnow-hunting dog named Tsali and a lovable cat named Chuck Norris.
CHRONIC RHINITIS IN CATS Does your cat have chronic snuffles? If your cat suffers from recurrent or persistent congestion with sneezing and nasal discharge, your cat may likely have chronic rhinitis. These cats are also referred to as “Chronic Snorkelers” or “Chronic Snufflers”.
Other factors that can play a role in chronic congestion include polyps, neoplasia, foreign bodies such as grass or plant material, fungal infection, allergies, and dental disease.
What diagnostics are recommended for chronic rhinitis kitties? Viral rhinitis is a diagnosis of exclusion, which means that we must rule out other causes of congestion before assuming that viral disease is the sole reason for the congestion. Labwork (including feline leukemia and FIV testing), blood pressure, and imaging such as rhinoscopy and CT/MRI may be indicated. Biopsy and cultures may be obtained during rhinoscopy.
What are the treatment options? Antibiotics and I-Lysine are usually first-line treatment options. Antivirals (such as famciclovir or interferon), antihistamines, and anti-inflammatories may be used. Probiotics and other supplements that support the immune system can be helpful as well. Environmental control of allergens and irritants, use of humidifiers, and using cat litter that produces less dust can help to alleviate secondary inflammation. Use of intranasal vaccines of FVRC has shown promise in helping some of the more chronic cases. An initial dose is given directly in the nostrils and repeated in 3-4 weeks. The vaccine can be repeated 3 times a year if initial response is positive. If congestion is severe, pretreatment with antibiotics first to help reduce congestion is recommended. Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet to treat this condition and recurrent issues can be frustrating for pet owners. Most cats, however, seem to manage happy lives despite dealing with recurrent congestion.
Will my cat ever stop sneezing? This can depend on the cause of the rhinitis, the age of exposure and the amount of virus your cat was exposed to. It is estimated that over 85% of all cats have been exposed to the viruses that cause upper respiratory infections. Most of them respond to initial treatment and can clear the disease but many go on to develop chronic changes that can affect them throughout their lives.
What are the causes of chronic congestion? The disease itself stems from exposure to viruses such as Feline Herpes Virus (FHV} and Calicivirus (FCV), which damage the nasal turbinates, thus keeping the nose from being able to function as it should in clearing normal environmental contaminants. While much of the congestion is due to inflammation, secondary bacterial infections are common sequelae and many times, antibiotics are needed to help.

Cover Story
PET OVERPOPULATION! What is the answer, euthanization or spay/neuter? By Bob Slone, President Project BARK
P
et overpopulation encompasses two primary factors: 1. Allowing cats and dogs to reproduce with little chance to find homes for the offspring. 2. Pets being relinquished by owners who can no longer keep their animals, or who no longer want them. We all know where they end up— the local animal shelter. The question is, “Why are animals being euthanized at the shelters?” To put it in simple terms, perfectly healthy, lovable, adoptable pets with eager faces are being euthanized only to make room for the next round of healthy, lovable and adoptable pets with eager faces. Granted, all of the pets don’t fall into these categories but 95% do. If the answer was adoption there would be more no-kill shelters and there are not and likely will not be. The answer is that there is just, “No more room at the Inn”. I think I’ve heard that one before. But what alternative do the shelters have? The process is very simple. A certain number of animals are surrendered to the shelters each month, some of them are fostered by volunteers, some will be fostered by rescue organizations, some are immediately euthanized because of temperament, medical issues, etc. and the rest are put in cages waiting to be adopted. Now the shelter is filled to capacity.
No, I am NOT next, it’s the Animals live longer, white cat. happier and healthier lives if they are spayed/neutered. It is NOT true they miss being able to reproduce. One of the biggest reasons to spay/neuter your pet is to end the euthanization of healthy animals!
12
October 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
This is basically what is happening every month at our shelters and other shelters throughout the country. The next month it starts all over again, but now the shelter has to make room for the newcomers, so here come the euthanizations. For the past few months much has been written in regard to the number of animals at the local animal shelter being euthanized. Most if not all of the blame seems to be directed to the shelter itself. We need to look a little deeper in to this issue to see who’s really at fault.
Let’s look at the other side of the coin, where these animals are coming from, not where they are going. For the most part they are coming from irresponsible pet owners who have failed to have their pets altered. Why have they failed to have the pets fixed? There are a number of reasons and in my opinion none of them hold much water. One of the answers we have heard too often is that it is too expensive to get them fixed. This may very well be the case, but there are alternatives and there have been for many years. Your pet could have the surgery at either Sheets Pet Clinic or The Humane Society in Guilford County for around $80.00, including the rabies shot. No special requirements, anyone can walk in the door and get those rates. If you still can’t afford those fees, if you live in Guilford County and you are receiving some form of government assistance or are low income, you can get financial assistance from Project B.A.R.K.(Bringing Animals Relief and Kindness) and the most it would cost you would be $15.00. Now what’s the excuse for not getting that pet spayed or neutered? Most of you reading this article have never heard of us but in fact we have been operating in Guilford County for over seven years. We are a nonprofit organization staffed by volunteers whose mission is to provide financial help to low income Guilford County pet owners to get their dogs and cats spayed/neutered. Since 2011 we have funded over 5,300 spay/neuter surgeries. “Bringing Animals Relief and Kindness” is just what it means. It means no more cats dropped off who knows where, it means no more animals dropped off at the shelter because the owners don’t know what to do with the puppies and kittens. It means helping the pet owners properly care for the pets they own, instead of subjecting them to produce litters of young who do not survive because the owner is

not in the financial position to provide proper food and medical care during its lifetime. We have been there and seen it all in regard to proper food for the animals. A few years ago we were assisting with the set-up of an enclosure for a Pit Bull female and her six puppies. The owner excused himself to get some food for the puppies. When he returned he had a small bucket of water in which was saturated a loaf of white bread. You know that the mama was getting that same food prior to birth as well as after. If you can’t afford to properly feed your pets, please don’t have any, it’s as simple as that. We have heard these excuses, from we want to sell the puppies (not much with the cats) to we want the children to see the miracle of birth. Kids today spend 90% of their time on their smart phones so they can go on the Internet and watch the miracle of birth one hundred times if they wish. That may sound great but what do they do when mama gives birth to eight puppies and the owner has to feed them (water soaked bread) after they are weaned, pay for shots (most never even get them) can’t sell them or even give them away? Oh yes, they can take them to the local shelter! Here we go again, let the animal shelter take care of our indiscretion, it is their job. If it’s their job, then stop complaining when the animals are euthanized. It was easy for you to get them out of sight by placing the burden on someone else. If you need to have more than one dog or cat fine, just make sure they are all the same gender. Then if there are some off-spring, that will really be the miracle of birth for the kids to see. The overpopulation is not a rescue problem, it is not an adoption problem, it is a spay/neuter problem. It means going to the root of it, where it begins, not where it ends up. It means stopping the overpopulation before it happens, not just finding space for these animals once they overcrowd the shelters. This is where Project B.A.R.K. has stepped in, by offering low cost spay/neuter to those who truly need assistance, who reside in Guilford County’s underserved communities in which accessibility
and affordability of surgery are out of reach. Statistics show that 85% of the pet overpopulation comes from less fortunate communities in which 85% of pets are unaltered. Our 10 -15 Fix Program has been in existence since 2011. Whether you own a cat, small dog or a 70 pound German Shepherd your total cost to have that animal altered including a rabies shot will be no more than $15.00. Just about anyone can afford these prices, if they truly want to have the pet fixed. That is the other side of the coin. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. Triad Happy Tails Magazine has been a major supporter of Project B.A.R.K. since day one, so I ask you if the information in this article does not apply to you, please make this information available to as many friends, neighbors or church goers who could use the financial help in getting their pets fixed as soon as possible. It is a long shot, but if we all work hard in an effort at trying to make the local animal shelter a no-kill facility, somewhere down the road, it may happen.
Need Financial Help with Your Pet’s Spay/Neuter? It is not rocket science, ADOPTION IS NOT THE ANSWER, SPAY/NEUTER IS, so why are not more pet owners taking advantage of what is right in front of them? Project BARK answers over 70 telephone calls a month on our spay/neuter hotline (336-965-1059). We interview the pet owners, explain the program in detail (most of them already know this) mail them an application form, which hopefully will be returned. As they say over at Sheets Pet Clinic:

Vet’s Corner Casey J. Clark, DVM Southwoods Animal Hospital I grew up in Montana surrounded by cats and dogs and even had a horse and mule for a while. My journey to veterinary school was not a direct path. When starting my undergraduate studies at Montana State University, I intended to become a human physician, but soon realized that I needed to dedicate my life to animals. In undergraduate school, pets were not allowed. This was the first time in my life that I could not enjoy the friendly wag of a tail or the comfort of a feline’s presence. I simply missed my pets too much; they had such a strong presence in my life that I decided to focus all of my efforts on getting into veterinary medical school. My passion for animals would not only allow me to help pets but help their families too. At Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, I started my own family of pets that included a golden retriever, great dane and a cat from the local animal shelter. After graduating veterinary school in 2009, I headed east to North Carolina. I have shared my home with dogs, cats, a guinea pig and even a chinchilla. I get to help pets on a daily basis and I love my work place. I have been at Southwoods Animal Hospital for years and became a partner doctor in 2013.
Pets Prescribed for Healthier Living Pets are prescribed to keep us healthy, so what should we do for them? I am dedicating this article to Cairo, my great dane who passed earlier this year. She was big, clumsy, goofy, yet so gentle and had a sweet presence. She made me happy, she made me laugh, and ultimately she made me cry. Pets are members of the family, often our best friends, and are an integral part of our lives. “Pets are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole”. The American Veterinary Medical Association defines the humananimal bond as follows: It is a mutually beneficial and dynamic relationship between people and animals that is influenced by behaviors that are essential to the health and well-being of both. This includes, but is not limited to, emotional, psychological, and physical interactions of people, animals, and the environment. As time goes on, research and data continues to demonstrate how pets improve our lives and make us healthier. Not only does this bond improve us as individuals, newer research is showing how it improves communities as a whole. The following list from Zoetis shows a few of the health benefits we receive from having a cat or dog in our lives.

October 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails
• Lowered blood pressure • Decreased risk of heart disease • Allergy prevention in children • Reduced stress levels
• Decreased anxiety and depression • Strengthened immune system • Increased social interaction • Accelerated heart attack recovery
Not only are pets keeping us healthier, some doctors are actually prescribing animal contact for patients who already have an illness or are recovering from a condition. Here are the percentage of doctors who report a moderate to significant improvement when an animal is part of a patient’s therapy (courtesy of Zoetis): 76% report improved patient relationships with staff members; 88% report improved physical condition; 97% report improved mental health condition; 98% report improved mood or outlook. So pets are not only sweet, caring, loyal, cute and fun, they help us physically and emotionally. They rely on us to show them love, keep them safe, healthy and happy. This relationship, like other relationships, takes work. It is not easy caring for a pet and it is a great responsibility. It is our role as veterinarians to help foster this relationship. If you do not have a vet, please start scheduling annual visits for your pets. Here is a bare bones list of essentials that I recommend for all cats and dogs to keep your furry loved ones as healthy as possible. • Annual physical exams to identify health problems early so treatment can begin before it’s too late. • Routine blood panels to evaluate internal organs, immune function, screen for diabetes and check heartworm status. • Annual intestinal parasite screening. Intestinal parasites can be life-threatening and some parasites can be zoonotic (spread to people). • Appropriate vaccinations based on your pet’s unique lifestyle. Vaccinations, or “shots”, protect against a wide variety of disease. • Continued, year round heartworm prevention. This deadly disease is spread by mosquitoes. There is no cure for cats, and treatment in dogs is costly, challenging and not free of possible complications. • Continued, year round flea and tick control. Fleas and ticks can cause skin problems, spread disease (some of which affect people) and infest the home. In addition to these items, please keep your pet from becoming overweight as it has been shown to decrease life expectancy. Talk to your veterinary healthcare team regarding appropriate diets and routine dental care. By three years of age, most pets have evidence of periodontal disease and this progressive condition ultimately impacts not only the mouth but the internal organs as well. I strongly recommend being proactive in regard to your pet’s care, please don’t wait for problems and then be reactive. This is the importance of preventative medicine. After all, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you have a “Cairo” in your life, please honor this pet and give her the same level of love that she gives you. I challenge everyone who reads this article to the following: 1.) Educate at least three people regarding the health benefits pets give people. 2.) Do your best to cover all of the essentials listed above to keep your pet healthy. For more information, visit: https://thepeteffect.org

Hiccup
is an “eclectic” mix of something, maybe Greyhound? We’re not sure but we do know that he is a charmer! He is a gorgeous boy, brindle with beautiful white markings, and one floppy ear. Hiccup is a very active boy who LOVES to play, run and chase toys. He is high energy, for sure! Hiccup is approximately 5-½ years old, neutered, microchipped, heartworm negative and up-to-date on all shots. Hiccup would be great for a very active family or single person. Hiccup’s adoption fee is $50. Meet Hiccup at the Guilford County Animal Shelter today! n
Mitsy is a black and white DSH, approximately two years old, spayed, up-to-date on her shots and microchipped. She is a quiet but affectionate girl and seems to tolerate other cats well. Meet Mitsy today at the Guilford County Animal Shelter! n
Bandit
is Shadow’s litter mate and cat apartment roommate at the shelter. She is a lovely, playful black and white DSH, about 5 months old. Bandit and Shadow were brought to the shelter together. Thunder
is a male Flemish Giant, truly an impressive King of Rabbits! He is a lovely gray color, with very soft fur, and likes having his ears rubbed gently and being brushed. He also seems to enjoy pushing his food bowl around and eating carrots sticks. Thunder is approximately 5 years old. The Flemish Giant breed is an out-of-the ordinary breed of rabbit and it would be best to research the care, housing and feeding of this giant of all rabbits! Dolly. Hello, my name is Dolly and I am a female gray domestic short hair mix. My estimated date of birth is 07/15/2015. I am a special gal. When HSDC rescued me, the staff noticed I walked with a limp and took me to see a vet. The vet said I was Humane Society of Davie County limping from very old fractures that had already healed. I am still able to get around just fine and I am in no pain. I may have had a rocky past, but I am a sweet cat. I love it when people pet me. I am looking for a family to give me love and support. Adoption fee is only $25 for Adopt-a-Cat Month.

LOVING PET INN ADOPTIONS 336.393.0000 / www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org
Edgar
is a lovable pup we have been fostering. He is a 60 pound, 1 year old Terrier mix. He is neutered and current on his shots. He is high energy and loves to play. He may be a little too rambunctious for small children. He has spent the past year with a Dachshund, but does chase cats and squirrels. Anyone who meets Edgar loves him within minutes. He has a lot of personality and just wants to be best friends with people and dogs alike. He is an exceptional jumper, so anything lower than a privacy fence is too low to contain him. THIS IS A COURTESY LISTING. PLEASE CONTACT JON at jscarterphoto@gmail.com if interested, not LPIA. Edgar is being fostered in Greensboro. Small adoption fee. n
Meadow
Marilyn
is about 2 years old and a petite 7 pound girl. Her pure white coat is beautiful. She loves to chase toys and play. She enjoys affection and likes to purr for you. Like most cats, she cherishes a good view of the outside so that she can enjoy watching birds and nature. She had a little abnormal skin on her ears (common to white cats) and we had that trimmed. She is fine now and has a cute new look! Adoption donation $40. Visit www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org for more info. n
Marlene
is a special young girl who was rescued from a horrific hoarding situation (32 dogs). She was found hiding in a barrel, very scared, but she was calm on the car ride to safety and good for her first bath ever and her vaccinations. Please see her full listing at www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org. As you can see in her video, she is really enjoying life and being loved now and she is learning to be a normal pup. She still needs an experienced owner and maybe an easygoing male companion dog. She does not care for female dogs. Adoption donation $125.
is so happy that she has ended her life as a lonely stray. She is an affectionate girl who loves to be petted and quickly rolls over for tummy rubs. She can be a little shy at first but is very friendly as soon as she realizes you are a new friend and can be trusted. She enjoys playing with toys, especially ones she can chase. She looks like a Tortoiseshell combined with a little bit of Siamese since she is a bit cross-eyed. Adoption donation $40.

Tater
Sassy Cat
is a very nice 29 pound, 2 year old girl with wrinkly skin, short legs, and a longer body who looks like what might happen if you mixed a Shar Pei and a Basset Hound. Tater is a confident and cheerful girl. She likes to be obedient and will sit on command. She likes going for leash walks. She is friendly to everyone at the rescue and loves attention. She came from a home with way too many animals (the owner died) and would prefer to be an only dog in her new home. Please see her full listing at www.lovingpetinnadoptions.org. Adoption donation $125.
is, well, not much of a sassy cat. In fact, he is very much an unsocialized, probably abused cat who, after many months in our shelter, has decided that he likes one person here very much and remains scared of everyone else. He came to us from a very pitiful situation; he and a senior Chihuahua mix in very poor shape were living huddled together in an outdoor dog house (the dog is now doing great in a new home). Sassy Cat is only about 2 years old and seeking a very special owner who will take the time to teach him how to be a beloved family cat. Applicants seeking a barn cat are also welcome to apply. Adoption donation $25.

Gracie. Our seven year old Gracie is anxiously searching for a home. She would do best in a home as the only dog, she wants all the snuggles to herself. This incredibly smart velcro Weim becomes panicked when left alone and would prefer her alone time to be minimal. She is ready to retrieve, go for car rides and offer years of love and affection. Her Tarheel Weimrescue energy level would not be the best match for small children, as she can be rumbustious. She is housebroken, knows basic commands, current on vaccines and heartworm prevention. RED DOG FARM ANIMAL RESCUE NETWORK
Roxy
Tweedle Dum. This
is beyond sweet! Roxy came to RDF when a nice girl picked her up from the middle of the road, afraid she would be hit by a car. The rescuer tried to find her owners for weeks with no luck. She could not keep her but wanted to make sure she would go to a safe place to find the forever home she deserves! Roxy is crate-trained, housetrained and working on basic commands. She does very well with other dogs and tested fine with cats. She’s in a foster home with older kids so we do not know for sure how she would be with small children but with her sweet nature we believe she would do well. She’s still a pup so will need an adopter willing to give her the exercise she needs.
poor boy has been looking for a forever home for over a year now. His social littermate already found her home. “Tweeds” prefers cats. He likes cats of any age and size, particularly kittens. In fact, we think he secretly wants to be a big kitty brother. Do you have room in your heart and home for this cat-loving boy? He is already vaccinated and neutered plus feline leukemia and aids negative. He would be the perfect babysitter for a new kitten or a great friend for an older cat missing a friend.
If you are interested in giving Roxy a loving home and family please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n
If interested, please complete an adoption application online at www.reddogfarm.com. n
Chiclet.
Pepper
This sweet baby kitten came to RDF when she was found starving with her brother and sister, Pez and Tic Tac after their mom had abandoned them at only 4 days old! Luckily, we found a foster who was willing to bottle feed these sweet babies. Out of the three, Chiclet has the loudest purr! She is also very soft, snuggly and loves to play. Chiclet has been exposed to a dog, other cats and kids and has been great with all of them!
is a very sweet rabbit that came to us from Guilford County Animal Services. He loves to play with his wooden toys, hop around and eat his veggies. Pepper is becoming Mr. Social Bunny and loving his foster family. Pepper has already been neutered and is ready to be adopted today!
If you are interested in Chiclet, please fill out the application online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Sir Pig-A-Lot.
Piper
How can you not want to take this adorable face home with you??!! Sir Pig-A-Lot came to us through animal control after he was bounced around from a few different homes until it was decided nobody wanted him. We can not imagine why no wants this guy because he loves a good peppermint and ear scratch just as much as the next piggy. Sir Piggy has done excellent in his foster home living with donkeys, goats and two other pigs. He enjoys his mud hole and overall is a low key kinda guy. He’s neutered, up-to-date on shots and is ready for his forever home.
is a very sweet 8 year old pony (approx. 14hh) that came to us through animal control. She had been put out in a pasture with two other horses and abandoned by their owner. When animal control took them in Piper was severely under weight and skittish when touched. She is just about at an appropriate weight and warming up to humans. She did great for the vet and farrier and was a champ at loading on a trailer. One of our youngest volunteers (a 9 year old little girl) has been grooming her and has won Piper’s love and trust. Sadly, Piper is not sound and will need to go to a home for a companion animal or just a big pet.

Midnite.
This beautiful green eyed beauty is Midnite. She is a female, ten month old DSH Tortie. Midnite still has a lot of kitten in her but at the same time loves to be on your lap taking a break from her play. Midnite has been waiting too long for her new family to come adopt her! Please consider bringing her into your home as your new best friend. Photo courtesy of Defy the Eye Pet Photography. Call SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 for more information. n
Oyster
is a male eight week old DMH. We decided to name mom Ocean, so keeping with the theme, the five kittens he arrived with were all given a name having something to do with the ocean. Hence the name Oyster. Though still nursing, Oyster and his siblings will soon be ready to enter a new adventure in their lives and go on to a new home. Oyster has a sweet personality and loves to be held and cuddled. He also, of course, loves to run around and play as a kitten should. Would you consider adopting Oyster and maybe even a brother or sister with him? Call SPCA of the Triad at 336-375-3222 for more information. n

CJ is a 9 lb. Shih Tzu who will bring as much love to her adopter’s life as they will to hers. Around 10 years old, CJ was dumped at a shelter. She had not been cared for and was in desperate need of a groom and medical care. CJ has had comprehensive veterinary care includHart-2-Heart Rescue ing, a dental cleaning and teeth extractions, bloodwork and cardiac evaluation. CJ is affectionate, happy and a very engaged little Shih Tzu who craves attention but doesn’t really want to share it with other dogs, but she is fine with cats. CJ has a heart murmur, but NO heart enlargement so she does NOT need medication at this time but will need monitoring. CJ does have some mobility limitations due to patella luxation (not surgically repairable) but she can get around fine outside and inside. CJ is spayed, current on all shots, heartworm tested, on heartworm prevention. Her adoption fee is $300. For more information about CJ and other Hart-2-Heart Rescue adoptable small dogs go to www.hart2heartrescue.petfinder.com or email h2hadoptions@gmail.com n

Angie. Born around January 2013, Angie is a beautiful brown tabby stumpy Manx mix girl. She likes to sit in laps and purr, be petted and loves to knead with her front paws. Angie’s a bit camera shy, but not shy around new people. She would be fine as an only cat. Angie seems to like kittens, but isn’t sure she likes other adult cats. She does fine with children and loves to have her belly rubbed. For more information please visit www.taillesscatrescue.com, or email: taillesscatrescue@hotmail.com. n Tailless Cat Rescue

Ivanka may not be political, but this 14 month girl definitely has an agenda. She’s eager to be put into office (a home) for life – maybe be speaker of the house and where all decisions will benefit her constituents (family). This freshman Dobe was rejected, Doberman Rescue of the Triad not because of a filibuster but because she was a chicken buster and was turned in to a shelter as a result. She’s a bundle of energy as she works with her constituents, going to great lengths jumping in and out of vehicles and tirelessly running all over her district. She’s enthusiastic and caring, graceful and athletic, and beautiful in her particularly dark, almost red, fawn coat. She uses all her talents to her best ability. You know, if politicians were as eager to serve as dogs, we’d all be better off! Read about Ivanka online at www.doberman-rescue.com and make an appointment to meet her once your application is approved. n

Clyde is estimated to be around 7 years old, and weighs around 13 lbs. He was picked up by Animal Control traveling with another dog we named Bonnie. After CRT pulled them, they were taken to one of CRT’s vets and were fixed, brought UTD on shots and both had much needed dentals. His foster Mom says Clyde is a very Chihuahua Rescue sweet guy, who loves to go outside and explore and sit in the sun in the big fenced-in back yard. He seems to be house-trained as he hasn’t had an accident in the house for a while now. He gets along with the other small foster dogs. Clyde is shy and takes a while warming up to people, needing a patient person to take their time with him.

Hope,
Cue Ball
(Female DSH). I came all the way from Florida. The family I used to live with had to evacuate during Hurricane Irma, so we stayed at a hotel here in Winston Salem. When my family was preparing to go back to Florida, they decided to leave me all alone in the hotel room -- but a nice lady saw me and took me to AARF. I am sweet and friendly. I like a good snuggle and will purr for you! I look forward to a new family and a fur-ever home. DOB: Around 7-1-17.
is a miracle. He, his mom and 8 siblings were found is a drain. When they were found, he was left behind. Little Cue Ball was wandering around for days when someone spotted him. He was then reunited with the rest of his family. He also is the smallest of the bunch but he does not know that because he plays as hard as the rest. Cue Ball is on his way to being a lap kitty. He is solid white with one small dot on his head that distinguishes him from the rest. He’s current on vaccinations and wants his furever home. DOB: 6/28/17.

Louise.
Hi! I’m Louise! I’m a DSH Tabby. My sister, Thelma, and I were living all by ourselves outside until we found a nice man to love us and feed us. He contacted AARF so we could find our very own humans to take care of. We would love to grow up together! We are not only sisters but best friends. We love to chase balls, wrestle, and lay on our foster mommy’s lap and chest. She says we’re a hot mess but she’s always smiling and laughing when she says it so I think that’s a good thing (IT IS!). We are very social and love people! DOB: 4/1/2017. Meet many of our cats at our Saturday AARF Adoption Fairs, 311 Harvey St, Winston-Salem. Galaxy
has the most unusual coloring for a Siamese. He is absolutely gorgeous. When he looks at you, it looks as though he’s cross-eyed! Galaxy came from an overcrowded environment and was very timid when he was rescued by AARF. He has completely turned the corner and plays with his other foster mates like he’s a big kitty! He likes to lay right beside you. DOB Sept 2017. Meet many of our cats at our Saturday AARF Adoption Fairs, 311 Harvey St, Winston-Salem. Ginger.
I saw the truck pull away, but what I did not know was that would be the last time I would see my family. Weeks went by and they never returned. I ran around with the other cats in the neighborhood, then finally found a family who would feed and care for me. I have always been an outside cat, I did not want to be inside. One night a bad thunderstorm came up. After scratching the door and crying, my family let me in. Much to my surprise and my family’s, I had a litter of 3 kittens, all girls, within hours of being let in the house. I have been a great mom and now it is time for my babies to find their fur-ever homes. DOB: 3/1/2016. Visit www.aarfanimals.org for more information and for our adoption process. n

Butler, born around June 10, 2017, is a calm tiger-striped tabby who was found at a manufacturing site with a tail injury that required amputation. He has healed fast and doesn’t miss his tail at all. He’s friendly, laidback and great with other cats. Never heard a hiss outa this boy, even when he was hurting. Sometimes he’s a little startled by loud sounds, but considering what happened to him, that’s not surprising and he’ll probably outgrow it. Loretta.
Say hello to Loretta! She was left at the shelter when her “family” was moving and left her behind. She was there for about 3 months and when her time was up we took her into the rescue. Her foster mom says she is a very sweet and loving girl who The Fort Rescue enjoys nothing more than to be snuggled up on the couch watching a good movie with awesome belly rubs. She’s great on a leash and is good with kids and other dogs. She is a little shy but once she trusts you, she is your companion forever!

Harvey
is NOT a giant rabbit! For those of you who are not classic movie buffs, Harvey made an appearance in a 1950’s movie starring James Stewart. Doesn’t matter if you didn’t see the movie, our Harvey is a star. He’d like to move on out to Hollywood, but would settle for a nice warm lap to sit on while watching classic films. We cannot imagine why she’s at the shelter, but we do know she’ll make a great addition to a good family. She a regal beauty who needs to be treated like a princess. Actually Princess Kate is her idol and she’s hoping to travel to Great Britain some day and meet her.

She’s strong, agile and has heart, all requirements for the Olympics. Won’t you help Marie realize her potential? She has told some of her shelter friends she really wants to get to Rio, but if she doesn’t, she’d settle for a good home with a loving family. She’d love to be your star!

April went to South Carolina a few months ago to view the total eclipse and now she wants to be an astronomer, or possibly an astrophysicist. While working on her PHD she has made a temporary pit stop at our shelter. Can you help a budding scientist find a new home and pursue her career?
oh Lindsay, what can we say? OK, she has ears, really big ears but that’s a part of her charm. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has been in contact with her about joining up with them and listening in on some of our potential adversaries. We don’t think she’s going to accept, military life doesn’t sound like a good fit for her, UNLESS some nice service member is looking for a great dog!

Sam is super sweet, house-trained, crate-trained, rides well in the car, does well on leash, with other dogs, knows basic commands, and loves hanging out with people and keeping things chill. HUMANE SOCIETY OF ALAMANCE COUNTY 336.438.2023 / www.hsaconline.org
Juniper,
Sheldon,
(Junie) #2470 is an active girl who loves to run, play and socialize. She is incredibly smart and very sweet. She loves to play with other dogs and is wonderful with children of all ages, including newborns! She loves people and wants to be near her person as much as possible. She will follow you around and then sit and watch you with those beautiful brown eyes. She is bold and is definitely unafraid to explore new things. She’d love to find a forever home who can give her the time and attention she so deserves and will love her unconditionally. Junie is housebroken, crate-trained and always ready to shower anyone with kisses!
#2549, is an amazing boy with soulful eyes and the most wonderful “mask”! This sweetheart is one smart cookie! He listens well and learns things quickly, especially when treats are in the picture. He loves to play with his siblings although he does get irritated now and then when his older sister, Pearl, wants to run the playgroup her way. For Sheldon, bossy sisters are just so annoying! He’d much rather wrestle with his brothers or cuddle on the couch with a human or two. Sheldon is truly a great dog who has been patiently waiting for his family to come along!

Marissa.
I am Marissa, #2539!! I’m 12 years young, but don’t let my age fool you--I still have lots of energy and love to give! I enjoy jogging around the neighborhood with my foster mom so I would do great with an active family, and a fenced yard would be FABULOUS! I do great with my foster brother and sister, Chihuahua mixes. I haven’t had much interaction with cats but I’m really easygoing and smart so I could probably learn to love them. My absolute FAVORITE things are evening cuddle time and belly rubs with my foster parents. I’m crate-trained, leash-trained and house-trained. They tell me I’m a Boston Terrier mix...and I am true to that breed so a forever person experienced with my personality would be great. Call 336-438-2023, visit www.hsaconline.org or send us an email at hsacinfo@gmail.com for more information. n
Girl
Trulie,
#2554, is three months old and she is full of energy and playfulness. She can be a little timid at first but will warm up to you as you get to know her. She loves to cuddle and will purr away in your arms. She enjoys playing with toys and taking naps in small spaces. Trulie is litter box trained. She loves playing and wrestling with other cats and would be happy to have one in her forever home! Call 336-438-2023, visit www.hsaconline.org or send us an email at hsacinfo@gmail.com for more information. n
Katrina,
, #2504, is a bit shy but is working on being more social every day. She likes to be scratched around her shoulders and neck and when you find the right spot, she will drop to the ground and purr with happiness. She does well with kids, but loud sounds and fast movements tend to make her pull back to re-evaluate the situation. While Girl is loving, she is not a lap cat. She does not look forward to being picked up but will tolerate being held and having her belly and paws touched. Girl is a talker. She has a soft meow and enjoys greeting you when you enter the room. She likes to be near you and have your attention.
#2562, has the disposition of a cat and the spirit of a dog. When a man found her walking around his neighborhood, Katrina joined him on his walk and followed him home. There, she took daily walks around the neighborhood with her new friend. The man grew fond of her, but had a dog that was too fond of being an only child, so Katrina moved to a foster home. From day one she snuggled with her foster parents. Katrina and the resident cat warmed to one another quickly and now sleep in the same bed with their foster owners. Katrina will sit on your lap and allow you to hold her. She has met several children and came right up to them and “asked” for petting. Katrina enjoys playing with toys and is an ideal mix of play and love.
