Training Your Pet The most important command in your dog’s life is “come”. It is the command that can literally save your dog’s life!

Recall Command; Come and I Mean It! By: Carolina Air Canine LLC

T

he “come” or recall command is the most important command in your dog’s life. It is the command that can literally save your dog’s life. It is vital that your dog come to his name in all types of situations and environments. When starting young pups on recall I always praise recall right away by using verbal praise, petting and treat rewards. This will start the conditioning process that sends your dog the message that coming when called, is required and the most rewarding thing a dog can do to please their owner. Never use your dog’s name negatively. This will be counter-productive when training for recall. Only use your dog’s name in a positive manner. This will make your dog understand to focus on you when you call his name. Here’s an example, your dog sticks his nose in the trash or toilet, and you yell, “Fido, no!” Your dog thinks, “rut roh” I’m a bad dog. Then here comes a car and your dog is about to go into the street, and you yell “Fido, no”! Does he stop in his tracks or continue on? See my point, so no shouting your dog’s name in a negative tone. The formal come command is taught using a standard six foot leash. Stand facing your dog working the stay command; hold the leash loose in one hand as you command, “Fido Come”, while using a hand signal with your other hand (waving hand toward your chest like cop waving you through an intersection). Have your dog sit positioned facing you (front) or circle around and sit at your side (finish). Then give lots of positive praise, with a tasty morsel and petting. Be sure to go over the top with verbal praise when getting started.

Once you master the six foot recall, then the leash gets longer and longer. Repetition is the key to getting your dog to come from 10 feet, 20 feet and as far as 50 feet. One way I teach the long recall is giving the dog plenty of freedom, while on a 50 foot lead, to wander and smell the flowers. Wait until he’s distracted, and then give the recall command. Remember to always use a loose leash. If the command is ignored, then give a corrective tug to get dog’s attention, giving super praise while he’s approaching you. Be creative when teaching the come command, I often will back away as the dog is approaching during the recall (reverse chaining). This helps to tap into his pack instinct to follow a leader, letting the dog know you desire its company. What more could a dog owner want, a command that can save your dog’s life. What better reason to train your dog to come when called! Carolina Air Canine now features a full service dog sports park offering agility, flyball and disc dog training, grooming, boarding, and daycare in a state of the art off leash dog park facility. Dr. Crozier has participated in multiple mission trips with Christian Veterinary Mission to the Cherokee and Navajo reservations and the Yup’ik tribes in Alaska. Along with seeing dogs and cats, Dr. Crozier enjoys working with backyard poultry (chickens, ducks, etc). In her Colleen Crozier, DVM spare time, she loves spending time with her energetic standard poodle (Ollivander), reading, baking, and spending time outdoors.

Degenerative Joint Disease and Physical Therapy

with medications, physical therapy and rehabilitation are a great way to improve our pets’ quality of life. Physical therapy and rehabilitation help to increase strength and flexibility that will lead to increased use of the affected leg from pain relief. Your veterinarian will measure your pet’s muscle mass and flexibility prior to starting physical therapy to help gauge improvement. Physical therapy is especially important in our pets that are recovering from orthopedic surgery and injuries to their legs. The great news about physical therapy is that once a veterinarian shows you what your pet needs, you can do a lot of it at home! Examples of physical therapy include laser therapy, acupuncture, passive range of motion exercises, cavaletti poles, underwater treadmill/swimming, controlled leash walking, slow and controlled climbing stairs/hills/curbs, massage, and hot/cold compresses. Every pet has different physical capabilities that will determine the correct combination of physical therapy. Once an appropriate rehabilitation program is established, you will see your pet feeling more energetic again.

“Rex seems to be slowing down. He doesn’t

want to go on long walks anymore.” “Fiona doesn’t jump up on the couch anymore.” “Max has a hard time getting up after he’s been laying down.”

T

hese are a few examples of common conversations that veterinarians have with their clients. As our pets get older they (just like humans) can develop arthritis in their joints. In veterinary terms we call this osteoarthritis (OA) and/or degenerative joint disease (DJD). While we typically see OA/DJD in older animals, younger animals can certainly develop these diseases as well, either due to confirmation abnormalities (ex. hip dysplasia), injuries (ex. cruciate tears), and/ or trauma (ex. excessive wear on joints due to high impact sports). Common signs of OA/DJD include lameness, difficulty going up/ down stairs, decreased activity, unwilling to play/jump, stiffness, scraping toes while walking and sometimes vocalizations. All of these signs are caused by pain due to the disease which further results in stiffening of joints, muscle spasms, and decreased muscle mass in the affected limbs. So what’s the good news? The good news is that there are lots of options for treating and managing the pain caused by OA/DJD. There are lots of medication options these days for treatment of OA/DJD that are safe and effective including anti-inflammatories, pain medications, joint supplements, and prescription diets. BETTER TOMORROW

By Sarah Williamson, Executive Director, Forsyth Humane Society

orsyth Humane Society (FHS) opened its doors at its new Morykwas Adoption and Resource Center on August 23, 2016. That opening was the culmination of a strategic plan launched in 2010 to build an expanded, state-of-the-art shelter. Our goal was not just to have more space for animals and people, but also to have a bigger and more positive impact in our community. As we welcomed our community into our spacious and lightfilled new shelter (shown below), FHS leadership began planning our next strategic vision. In Forsyth County, the euthanasia rate for shelter animals is currently over 60%. Our Board of Directors and leadership have

12

September 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

embraced a new strategic goal to reduce that euthanasia rate to 10% by 2023. Why 10%? That is a generally accepted level in animal welfare. It acknowledges that some animals will need to be euthanized because they are a public safety risk. For some shelter animals, we will make the same decision we make for the animals in our home: humane euthanasia to stop pain and suffering. It’s a big goal, and it is achievable. Communities as diverse as Asheville and Los Angeles have done it. Organizations like Best Friends Society offer a variety of tools and solutions that lead to success. We believe there are several key programs that will make a difference here in Forsyth County. They include: making spay and neuter surgeries more affordable and accessible; increasing awareness and support for community cats and trap-neuter-release; supporting a thriving and extensive foster community for special needs animals; actively transferring animals to breed-specific and other rescues; transporting animals out of state to areas with empty shelters; and increasing support to people who want to keep their beloved animals in their homes, but need help with food, vet bills, pet supplies, or training and behavioral resources. Forsyth Humane Society cannot achieve this goal alone. It will require private-public partnerships, collaboration among 501(c)3 rescues, and cooperation among the many agencies who all have a vested interest in saving more animals. FHS is pleased to be in dialogue with a consortium of Forsyth County agencies who are interested in pulling together to bring down our euthanasia rate.

Canine Influenza -

The Doggy Flu: t he old, the new, and maybe kitties too!

Prevention

C

anine Influenza Virus (CIV) has actually been around since 2004, but this past May, outbreaks originating at dog shows in Perry, GA and DeLand, FL spread the latest strain of canine flu through the Southeast into North Carolina. Social media sites were ablaze and panicked calls from conscientious owners poured into veterinary offices across our state.

What is it? CIV is caused by two strains of Type A influenza viruses known as H3N8 and H3N2. We distinguish different strains of Influenza A viruses based on two features found on the outer surface of the virus. This is kind of like telling one car from another based on their headlights or door styles. One of these features is a protein called a hemagglutinin, the H. This protein is very important because it determines how the virus attaches to the cells in a dog’s respiratory tract to start the infection. Antibodies made by the dog’s immune system can bind to this site and help stop the virus from getting into the dog’s cells. The other feature is a neuraminidase, the N, which is an enzyme that the virus uses to get out of the dog’s respiratory cell so it can spread.

Where did it come from? The older H3N8 virus was first detected in Florida’s racing greyhounds in 2004. Mutations in an influenza virus found in horses allowed it to be transmitted to dogs, and most importantly, from dog to dog. It has now spread to almost every state in the country. The newer H3N2 strain of canine influenza originated in birds before mutating to be able to infect dogs. In March of 2015, it made its U.S. debut in a dramatic outbreak of canine respiratory disease in the Chicago area. It took only five months for the H3N2 virus to spread to 23 states. This is the strain responsible for the Spring 2017 outbreak, and was also identified as the cause of respiratory disease in a group of Indiana shelter cats in 2016.

14

In both strains, the most common symptom is a cough that lasts 10-21 days even with antibiotics and cough suppressants. Other signs may include a runny, snotty nose, runny eyes, sneezing, fever, lethargy, and a lack of appetite. CIV is transmitted during coughing, sneezing, or barking that disperse droplets into the environment. This disease is extremely contagious, with almost all exposed dogs becoming infected. About 80% of infected dogs will show signs of the disease. The other 20%, that do not appear ill, still shed the virus and can infect other dogs unbeknownst to their owners. The incubation period can vary from one to eight days after infection depending on the strain. Unfortunately, dogs are most contagious during this time. As with human influenza, most dogs recover within two-three weeks with only supportive care and TLC. However, in weak or otherwise compromised dogs, the damage done by the influenza virus can allow a secondary bacterial infection to take hold, resulting in a life threatening pneumonia.

September 2017 www.facebook.com/triadhappytails

Since this disease is so contagious, suspected patients may be asked to wait in their cars to be evaluated so as not to expose the entire hospital. Any dog suspected of being infected should be isolated for four weeks. The virus can typically live in the environment for two days, but it can easily be killed with most common disinfectants which should be used regularly to clean any facility where dogs are kept. Both strains of CIV presently circulating are in the H3 hemagglutinin family. While they are actually 85% similar, key differences mean that older vaccines targeting only the H3N8 strain are not effective enough to offer good protection against the newer H3N2 strain. Luckily, there is a bivalent vaccine that gives protection against both strains. It is important for owners to be aware that vaccination will decrease, but not eliminate, the risk that their dog will contract the virus if exposed. While vaccination can not completely eliminate the chance of infection, it can lessen the severity and length of the illness. Dogs considered at risk for CIV are social dogs who frequently mingle with others and would benefit from the vaccine. Pets who stay in their own well fenced yards and never contact other dogs, are considered low risk.

Speak with your veterinarian to access your dog’s risk and make a prevention plan that best suits your dog’s lifestyle.

ANIMAL ADOPTION & RESCUE FOUNDATION 336.768.7387 / www.aarfanimals.org

Ginger Joe is one of

Ester

is a sweet little girl. She is one of AARF’s special needs cats. She has been diagnosed with a mild neurological disorder, but it doesn’t slow her down a bit! She was born in June of 2014. Ester has been spayed, is current on vaccinations, and is negative for FIV/FeLV. Contact us for more information. Meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Go to www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Garnet

is one of many kittens available for adoption from AARF. He has a one-sided ‘stache’ that makes him stand out in any crowd, even among his 7 cute litter mates! Garnet is the biggest of the litter and is a Mama Pearl favorite. He would really LOVE to stay with his Mom and she would really enjoy watching her son grow into a man cat! This guy is not only unique but a total love ‘stache’! He will curl up on your lap to sleep, but is also the first to wake from a nap so he doesn’t miss any playtime! DOB July 3, 2017. Meet and visit with many of our cats at the AARF House (311 Harvey St, Winston Salem) during our adoption fair hours. Visit us online at www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption fair hours and adoption process. n

Raine

AARF’s special needs cats. He is FIV+ and will need to go into a home either as an “only cat” or with other FIV+ cats. We estimate that Joe was born in early 2011. He was rescued from Animal Control because he’s such a sweet boy. Contact us for more information about Ginger Joe. Visit online at www.aarfanimals.org for information about our adoption process. n

Fiona

was living with her family when job loss caused them to lose their home, so AARF agreed to take her in. The owners say she is housetrained and was good with children. She is quite active and needs training, so would be better with older children. She gets along with other dogs, is friendly and knows “sit” and “down” already. Fiona is in need of a foster home, if you would be interested in fostering for AARF, let us know! Meet Fiona at AARF’s Saturday adoption fairs at 311 Harvey St from noon to 3pm. Due to a home visit being part of the adoption process, applicants must live within 45 minutes of Winston-Salem. Visit www.aarfanimals.org for more information. Photo courtesy of Carol Maurin Photography. n

Will

came to AARF very pregnant and delivered her babies under our care but is now spayed. Raine has several AARF dogs that she loves, but is sometimes reactive when her kennel is approached by a strange dog or unknown person. We aren’t sure what happened to her in her “previous” life, so she wouldn’t be good with small children. She loves to ride in the car, knows basic commands, is learning to walk on a leash and loves belly rubs. Raine has won over all of the dog team with her wiggly self and is a candidate for foster-to-adopt to the right person.

is a very sweet boy once he meets and trusts people. Our trainer has been working with him to help him with meeting new people and learning to trust. He responds well as long as whomever adopts him will be patient and continue to work with him. He is housebroken, loves other dogs and playing fetch. Will will be a wonderful fit in an apartment, and would make a great running dog.

Meet Raine at AARF’s Saturday adoption fairs at 311 Harvey St. from noon to 3pm. For the right home, we will accommodate a longer distance from Winston-Salem than our usual adoptions. Photo courtesy of Carol Maurin Photography. n

You can meet him on Saturday between noon and 3pm at 311 Harvey St. in Winston Salem. Due to a home visit he cannot be adopted more than an hour from Winston Salem. Visit www.aarfanimals.org for more information. Photo courtesy of Carol Maurin Photography. n

She then enjoys a day of learning why dad’s chair is so comfortable, she keeps it warm and just right for dad’s return. Once mom is home, she will curl up for some love and a little evening news.

cat. He could probably be happy in a home with other pets or by himself. He is both playful and cuddly, depending on his mood. He likes dog toys better than most cat toys. He is very affectionate and has been friendly to guests. Anchovy alternates between lying in laps and running around. He hasn’t been very destructive, but he climbs on top of everything and loves to scratch. He took to the cardboard scratch box right away, and hasn’t scratched up the furniture. He will steal any food he can get to, including the dog’s food. He’s good about using his litter box and is perfect for someone who wants an active but affectionate cat with a big personality!

Sonny,

Sissy.

#2505, loves to jump into laps and window sills. He loves to play and has toys all over his room, one of which is a fuzzy ball which he has pulled the stuffing out of and destroyed. It is still his favorite toy and he carries it around in his mouth. He is a fast little guy and is hard to catch on camera. He is great with kids and doesn’t mind being loved on once he is all played out. He allows us to cradle him and stroke his belly and paws. He is a creature of comfort and likes to sleep in his bed or on whatever fluffy blanket has been laid out for him. He truly is a wonderful kitten!

#1646. I am Sissy the Sweet, a laid-back girl with a gentle meow and beautiful glossy fur. I love to be petted and have my head and white chin scratched. My fur is velvety and I have the most striking coloring on my face. While I don’t really like to be picked up, I do enjoy sitting next to you to keep you company. I am the most active in the morning and early evening and little stuffed mice are my absolute favorite toys to play with. I love to lounge upon my foster mom’s piano while I listen to her play and accompany her with my purrs...What do you say? Shall we make beautiful music together?

Jax,

Bruce,

#2389, is a happy two year old Boxer mix who is eager to please, especially when treats are involved! One look at his face and you’ll simply want to shower him with kisses. He is a cuddle bug, opting to settle on the couch in a human’s lap instead of on his bed. Jax loves other dogs and would love to have a fur sibling in the home. He is housebroken, crate-trained and is getting better on leash. Jax needs an active family willing to take him hiking and exploring. The use of positive reinforcement when training goes a long way with this sweetheart as he is highly intelligent and learns best that way. Contact us if you can provide this boy with the home he deserves.

#2548. Hello, World! My name is Handsome Bruce and I am an amazing boy who loves to socialize and get everyone energized! I am super duper smart, athletic and learn things very quickly, especially when treats are involved. I love to run and jump! I’m learning to walk nicely on leash and get along well with other dogs. I would probably do well with cats, since I seem to be curious but accepting of them. Kids absolutely love spending time with me and watching me show off my tricks! I’d love to find a forever home soon, with a nice fenced in yard for me to run and play in and a family that will spoil me rotten and love me unconditionally.

Coral,

Miss Daisy,

#2547. My name is Coral and I am a sweet, high energy bundle of fun. I so love belly rubs and love to play in water! I am a very smart girl who will sit for meals and treats. I am still learning to walk nicely on leash and walk with the other dogs in the household and my foster mom says I’m getting better every day! I get along with other dogs after proper introductions are made and kids love to spend time with me. Where, oh, where is my forever family? Don’t they realize that I’ve been waiting for them to scoop me up and take me home?

#2336, is a sweet girl full of life and adventure! She has a spirit about her that is like no other and will be a wonderful asset to your home. She will greet you in the morning and is ready to play! She loves to play outside with her toys, chew on bones and take car rides. She loves to chase/track squirrels, rabbits, etc. and once she gets her mind set on the task, she is off on the hunt and will sometimes proudly bring you back a “gift”. She is very loving and likes to stay close to her people, especially children whom she has grown up around. Daisy loves other dogs and would greatly appreciate having a four-legged companion in her forever home.

Olive is a young, energetic beauty that just loves to play fetch. She is extremely loyal and eager to learn new things. We believe she is approximately 2 years old and fully grown at 50 lbs. We do not know her exact breed. She appears to have some Bulldog or Pit in her, but her ears are big like a shepherd and her face is more slender. Molly is a sweet little girl with the prettiest markings. She is white with classic tabby. She came to Triad Cat after someone witnessed her being thrown out of a car window. Thankfully she wasn’t hurt. Molly started out a bit shy, but now she is very outgoing and wants to be loved. She gets along great with the other foster cats in the home and even the dogs. At Triad Independent Cat Rescue adoption fairs, she reaches out for anyone that gets close enough to her crate, wanting to be petted. Molly is tested for Felv/FIV/Heartworm and will be spayed prior to adoption.

Carrie

Buns

is a 4 year old spayed female who has been waiting ever so patiently for a forever family since February of this year. Smokey

is a 4 month old Pit Mix puppy that was found abandoned and tied up at a local park. Smokey is all puppy but is very sweet. Like most puppies, he will need a forever home willing to teach him proper behavior and obedience. He is very smart and we think he’ll learn right away once he gets into a normal routine. He loves other dogs and cats and thinks everyone just wants to play. If you are interested in giving this little fella a loving home and family please visit www.reddogfarm.com. n

Bean

Kiesel

needs a friend. Not only is he looking for his forever home but he needs a doggie companion to look up to and pal around with. This boy does great with a routine and a friend to chill with during the day. Kiesel doesn’t particularly care for children so a home without kids is a must. The occasional child passing by is fine but please don’t pet him. Kiesel knows his basic commands and would be a great dog for just about any person or couple. Finally, Kiesel has quite the nose that may or may not get him in trouble in your backyard. He might just train all the squirrels to stay on the other side of the fence. If interested, please complete an adoption application online at www.reddogfarm.com. n

Casey

Birch

is a very sweet 6 year old pot belly pig. She came from a loving home that took excellent care of her for her first 6 years. Unfortunately, Casey had to be surrendered to us after her family had to move out of state. Casey is at an ideal weight for a pot belly pig and is healthy. She had been an only pig until she arrived at her foster home and was introduced to two other pigs. Casey now happily shares a giant nest of straw with her new piggy friends. Casey loves a good scratching on her piggy ears and of course on her belly. Casey is doing amazing in her foster home. She is a very polite lady with kids, adults and other farm animals. Her foster mom noticed her snuggling in the same house with her new piggy brother which demonstrates Casey’s easygoing personality.

comes from a litter of 5, the “tree litter”! He and his kitten siblings are about 9 weeks old and were found living in a field in the cold and pouring rain. They are new to Red Dog Farm and are learning the ropes of being indoor kitties. He and his sibling are very friendly and socialized, they do well with other cats, dogs, and kids! All the kittens in this litter will be spayed and neutered in the next couple of weeks and will then be available for adoption.

Willie came to us from a home where he had been a house dog until a couple of years ago when one of his humans had a health problem. Since then he has spent his days tied out in the yard and his nights in the basement. He came to us with an ear infection, intestinal worms, arthritis, and he is hypothyroid. The ear infection and intestinal Doberman Rescue of the Triad worms have cleared up, and he’s showing improvement as a result of the thyroid and arthritis meds. Aside from the manageable medical needs, this is a great-hearted fellow of the best Doberman sort. Despite his large size and considerable strength, he’s very gentle. Max has one question for

Cielo.

County Animal Shelter.

Do you know what my name means? Cielo means heaven! That’s right! I came straight down from heaven to make sure that everyone I meet has a smile on their face. I would love to have a home with a fenced in yard where I can run and play. Having a doggie brother or sister would be great too! I also like kids... they always drop the best tasting treats. My adoption fee is only $45 at the Davidson County Animal Shelter. I’m already spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped.

Old North Canine Rescue Transporting - Another Way to Save Lives

A

fter Hurricane Katrina left more than 250,000 pets stranded, a new model of dog rescue began. Hundreds of thousands of unwanted dogs in the South found loving homes in the Northern states. High poverty combined with limited access to veterinary care leads to a disproportionately high number of animals entering shelters in the southern states. The South is full of shelters that kill 50-90% of animals each year simply due to overcrowding. Fortunately, this problem is has a proven solution. After attending the HSUS Animal Care Expo in Fort Lauderdale this year, the founder of Old North Canine Rescue, Angela Wacker, met with rescuers from all over the globe. Brainstorming sessions with national organizations such as HSUS, ASPCA and Maddie’s Fund, Wacker and other Old North volunteers discussed ways in which the Burlington rescue could have a much larger impact. “While we saved a fair number of dogs since we began, we were continually frustrated by the ones we couldn’t save. We found ourselves burnt out and depressed because we didn’t feel like we were making a real difference,” Wacker said. The group knew the time had come to do more than rescue a few dogs a month. Old North Canine Rescue was founded in September 2015. Since that time, we have saved over 120 dogs with our foster and adoption program. While this was a great start, we knew that we could save many more lives by transferring dogs to states where the South’s unwanted dogs are in demand. “Due to ongoing spay and neuter programs, shelters and rescues in many states in the North are empty. Dogs that are scheduled to die here in shelters here can find their happily ever-after” Wacker said. After working with many underfunded, understaffed shelters in North Carolina, we realized there simply wasn’t the staffing necessary to create transportation programs at the shelter level. After establishing partnerships with two rescue groups in the DC area, we are now ready to begin pulling a much larger number of dogs from area shelters. We are hoping that this model will enable many other people to foster who otherwise wouldn’t able to commit to long term fostering.

Just a few days with you will save countless lives! Temporary fosters wanted Alamance, Guilford, Orange & Cabarrus Counties

info@oldnorthcanine.com www.oldnorthcanine.com We hope to save 300 dogs in the first year of operation of this new program. To do this, temporary fosters are needed in various locations around Alamance, Guilford, Cabarrus and Orange Counties. “The plan is to save up to 20 dogs per month from local shelters,” Wacker said. “These dogs will go into temporary foster homes where they stay for a few days or weeks until transport is ready to relocate them.

Foster homes may provide a safe place for just a few days, but this work is vital to the saving of lives. The problem of homeless dogs in the Triad is immense and is a community issue. It will take a community to begin making progress and saving lives. While this work is not easy, it is more than rewarding. “Rescue is hard, stressful work and often eats at the middle of your heart. When an adoption fails or a dog is sick or injured, you can feel helpless. It takes dedication and an unselfish sharing of time and effort,” said Jackie Bull, Director of Old North. “In the end, it is all so worthwhile when a child smiles after meeting their new pet, or an adoptable dog lays his head in your lap and stares deep into your soul, letting you know that he knows he is safe.”

We’ve seen many pups grow from puppyhood to adulthood and we’ve come to love them as our own. We are grateful for your support over the last 12 years and hope to continue for many more!

We also want to thank our clients and others throughout the Triad for helping us find permanent, loving homes for more than 250 dogs over the last 12 years. With your help, we hope to find homes for many more dogs!

t Adop Chef

Meet Chef, Jed and Lou, our current foster dogs Chef, on the left, is a Lab mix puppy around 6 months old. He’s sweet and playful...everything a puppy should be, of course. Chef will come with a 20 day daycare pass to Dog Days. The hound brothers below, Jed and Lou (Jed is on the left and has the broader white stripe across the nose), are one year old male American Foxhounds that were ownersurrendered to the SPCA of the Triad. They are a bonded pair and would probably be OK if they were separated, but would probably do best if adopted together. They are great with other dogs and kids. It is unknown how they are with cats. Both are heartworm negative, up-to-date on vaccines and neutered. Jed and Lou will come with a 20 day daycare pass also. If they are adopted together, each dog will have their own 20 day daycare pass!
